Highlights - Brazil Formula 1

Brazil is my home and it's where I have my soul. One thing I have

clear, motor racing is exciting. Motor racing is a sport that brings

people to the limit, men and machine. A desire to go faster and

faster all the time. I was part of it. Fear is very important,

fundamental feeling of self preservation. It determines your

limits. We expose ourselves to danger. We are used to being on the

edge. If you are ahead most of the time,

if you are on pole position, if you lead races more than anybody by far,

you are always focused. We have to do what we believe is

right, not what other people would like you to do, because they are

competition, they are not on your side.

You have to aim for what your heart tells you. If you believe in

something you go to it right to the end. The reason for it is to

succeed, so win. -- to win. The philosophy of a Brazilian legend,

but it took him eight attempts to win this Brazilian Grand Prix and

today Lewis Hamilton will try to emulate his hero and win here in

Interlagos Brazil on his ninth attempt. He may have won the World

Championship but he has built. This box to take. Mercedes have owned

2015 and Nico still has to bring home the second place. He increased

his chances with a win last time in home the second place. He increased

Mexico. Now 21 points the gap to Sebastian Vettel. Then the finished

battle between Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen rages at third place.

-- the Finnish battle for fourth place. Williams are ready to

celebrate their victory over Red Bull to third place. Obviously the

Formula 1 paddock is deeply saddened by the tragic events in Paris two

days ago. You will see all of the drivers and officials wearing black

armbands in tribute to those who lost their lives, and many of the

teams are displaying messages as a mark of respect. We will have all of

the race action for you in just a moment, but first of all here is the

story of qualifying, with Lee McKenzie.

Fernando Alonso had a second engine failure of the weekend, which gave

him some time to work on his tan if not his grid position. Jenson Button

also hashed out in Q1 but before they went back to a despondent

garage, data at the time to savour the podium, something the two former

champions have not done for a while. The two Felipe Massa riddle art

friends but that was almost tested when they came together on the

track. Felipe Nasr was given a 3 place grid penalty and now starts

from 13. Nico Rosberg had looked more comfortable than Lewis Hamilton

throughout the three sessions and he put in a great early lap to take

provisional pole, which he then battered again. Hamilton is flying

but then missed out on pole position by eight hundredths of a second. The

lab was really good and to try and better that afterwards, it's such a

fine line, difficult to pull something out. I was down a tent and

a half or something like that. It makes for an exciting race tomorrow.

It was the speed on one lap and beating me in qualifying all the

time, that is what made the difference. Nico Rosberg made his

with consecutive pole position and Mercedes set a new single-season

record for the most front row starts, with 31. The Ferraris line

up behind. Hulkenberg is fifth, matching his best position of the

year. Daniil Kvyat is alongside. After a grid penalty, Valtteri

Bottas emerges in seven. Felipe Nasr is the highest placed Brazilian and

behind them are the two Toro Rossos. The Saubers are 13th. Pastor

Maldonado gets his highest starting position at Interlagos. Daniel

Ricciardo used the new upgraded Renault engine but not only was it

slower than the older one, he had to take a templated for the change.

Fernando Alonso is alongside. COMMENTATOR: Getting ready for the

start, Lewis Hamilton chasing his 44th career win and Mercedes win, at

a track he is yet to conquer. Rosberg against Hamilton up towards

Turn 1, Vettel gets away Rosberg against Hamilton up towards

Hamilton is in front, was Berg going wheel-to-wheel but decides against

it and now Rosberg has the advantage, Vettel in third and

Raikkonen in fourth place. Lotus running wide. Daniil Kvyat is going

to be overtaken. That is Hulkenberg who lost some places who is coming

back. Rosberg makes a great start and offline goes one of the

McLarens. It was Alonzo, I think. Rosberg, Hamilton, Vettel. Max

Verstappen has had a good getaway in ninth. Sergio Perez is 10th. Felipe

Massa in the blue and yellow Sauber -- Felipe Nasr. Alonzo is still

running and hopefully he will not have lost too much ground. Problems

for Carlos Sainz. The rear axle is completely locked. You can see the

black lines on the track. Whatever the

It's all gone horribly wrong for Carlos Sainz in the opening stages,

but Nico Rosberg leads at the end of the first lap. If the rear axle is

locked, they may well have to go for the safety car. Sergio Perez

battling with Verstappen and he is in front of the Dutchman. Trying to

see if Romain Grosjean has made progress, he has. A reasonably good

start from Romain Grosjean. Maldonado in 15. Yellows in the

second sector of the lap, so no overtaking there. Rosberg leads from

Hamilton, they are all passing the stricken car of the Carlos Sainz

over on the right hand side. One Toro Rosso out of this Grand Prix

already and that doesn't help them close the gap towards Lotus, but the

other Toro Rosso currently holding on to 10th place. So in the points,

with Grosjean battling not far behind him. That could be very

interesting to keep an eye on. Sergio Perez holding onto ninth

position. The two Ferraris pulling away from the next group, which is

headed up by Bottas. It wasn't a bad start from Hamilton. You will see

Hamilton comes in behind Rosberg, picks up the slipstream and then

goes to the outside. A fast start from Bottas around the outside as

well. Hamilton tries to go around the outside but decides to her on

the side of caution. The Renaults going two abreast at Turn 3. That's

not something you normally see. Vettel's getaway, he was just out

powered by the Mercedes Grand Prix car. A small lock-up as he defends

the inside line. Defending fresh air because if Raikkonen was beside him,

he would be under strict instructions... Hulkenberg didn't

capitalise on his strong qualifying position. This battle between the

Finns, not much to separate them. Ricciardo... Into the pits. He was

about 13th position before the pit stop. That is very early to be going

in. Getting a cheer from the crowd, I'm not sure what that is but I

presume it is a Brazilian overtaking someone. Hamilton ahead of Rosberg

and he has DRS, so he's going for it. No question of him having to

extend the life of the tyres. Rosberg is the prime call on who

gets to stop first. It is still was Berg by a narrow margin over his

team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Vettel sitting a second and a Harper hide

in third. Raikkonen is in fourth. The first of the Red Bulls is in

sixth. The other one is at the back. Daniel Ricciardo, Daniil

Kvyat, Hulkenberg, Felipe Massa, Sergio Perez and Verstappen. A

little gap behind them to Felipe Nasr and Romain Grosjean. It may

well be a strategy called to get him clean air. We know that that engine

has not performed as well as the other engine. It looks like we're

about to see one of the first DRS passes of the afternoon. Here comes

Romain Grosjean, he's going to go flying past Felipe Nasr's Sauber.

That was just enough for Romain Grosjean to take full advantage and

use the DRS and the Mercedes horsepower up the hill. That puts

Grosjean on the verge of points, although he still needs to move up

one more. He will go chasing after Max Verstappen in that tussle

between Toro Rosso and Lotus. Let's watch how this evolved from Felipe

Nasr's points of view. He position watch how this evolved from Felipe

him in -- himself in his slipstream and was unable to capitalise.

RADIO: Well done, keep pushing. Felipe Nasr had been asking how to

get more straight-line speed on the radio. The little mistake that he

made I don't think helped matters. Daniel Ricciardo being urged to get

through and passed the Manor Marussia F1 cars as soon as

possible. Not to lose any time behind them, and he is behind Will

Stevens. He nearly rammed into behind them, and he is behind Will

back of him, I don't think he was prepared for just how slow the Manor

Marussia is. It shouldn't be a big surprise. His team-mate locking

massively as he rolls the kind to Turn 10. This is really bad news for

Daniel Ricciardo, that he has spent the best part of a quarter of a lap

behind him. Nico Hulkenberg has come into the pits, quite an early start

for the Force India on Lap 10. Should still be able to make it a

two-stop race from there but he is one of the earlier stops. He will be

aiming to come out in front of Daniel Ricciardo, as Daniel goes for

the pass. Even without DRS, I think the straight-line speed is blatantly

obvious. He will hope to come out in front of Hulkenberg. He is well out

in front. That was probably a strategic move for them. So,

Hulkenberg trying to get himself a bit of clean air now as well. A

Hulkenberg trying to get himself a number of teams reporting that tyres

are OK, and Hulkenberg them.

RADIO: Box this lap, box this lab. Felipe Massa being brought in next

as well. Hulkenberg dated in Lap 10 and the predicted life of this tyre,

that gives him 30 laps for the rest of the race. Bang on predictions so

far. Everyone is going with two stop options. Plenty in, Kvyat is in and

Felipe Massa as well, and there is -- and Sergio Perez. Felipe Massa,

the Williams crew going to work. It looks like a clean start. Romain

Grosjean peeling off now and Daniil Kvyat is already on his way back out

once again. J Parrott is still going to be in front of Grosjean, but

where will they both be relative to Verstappen, who has stayed out?

That's going to be an interesting one in the lower reaches of the top

ten, but definitely trying to undercut the Toro Rosso of

Verstappen. It'll be all about the breaks into

four. He manages to fend off Kvyat, they were both on the limit on the

brakes into Turn 4. Nico Hulkenberg, a very useful manoeuvre. Keeps him

ahead of Daniil Kvyat. Bottas is now being in the other Williams, let's

see if he has an equally trouble-free stop. That looked like

a superb stop by the Williams team. Not the best of the season but

nonetheless effective. This Not the best of the season but

interesting, Verstappen, to see where Verstappen comes back out. All

having to react because they know the fresh tyre gives them the

opportunity to push hard. You can find yourself getting jumped. He is

reacted to that. Let's keep an eye. He's going to be close with

Grosjean, making his way to the exit Turn 3. Meanwhile, Rosberg

continuing... Verstappen just popped out in front of Grosjean. We're not

seeing it, but I think Verstappen has held onto that position, thought

it would work, fought Lotus to go for the earliest. You can see the

disappointment on the faces of Toro Rosso because it hasn't... In fact,

they'll be happy, because they stay in front of Lotus. That has worked

well. Ferrari coming in by the looks of things, will Mercedes react?

Raikkonen into the pit. Hamilton has just edged the gap at 1.5 seconds,

interesting. It would suggest to me that he has the speed but again he

has been neutralised like we saw in Mexico. It continues to highlight

the importance of qualifying, getting out of the first corner

first. Keeping an eye from the commentary box position, expect the

Mercedes team to move fairly soon, we expected to be Rosberg. He'll

have the advantage of fresh tyres. If he were to pit now, he'd come out

just behind Raikkonen. TEAM RADIO: books, books, box, remember

left-hand. Raikkonen just rejoined, plenty still to play with alongside

Valtteri Bottas. We could have another dice between the two, only

three points separating Bottas and Raikkonen in the World

Championships, there could be a race between them. At the moment

Bottas's troubles are to get past Maldonado, who hasn't been in yet. A

genuine race for position. started on the medium compound tyre.

In comes the race leader, Nico Rosberg. We need to see an

absolutely clean stop from Rosberg's point of view. This is

where Hamilton has an opportunity if he can get a quick lap in. It'll be

difficult, he'll need to go faster. It was a slow start. He can pull off

a 2 second pit stop, so Hamilton's fate could lie in the power of the

stop. Vettel was coming in, so they couldn't get him out, that could

cost him crucial time. Vettel has been running about two four tenths

of a second quicker than Mercedes. The Ferrari starting to show more

pace than maybe the practice times would have suggested. Bottas has got

past Maldonado, an important manoeuvre. Get that done quickly.

Not be held up behind the Lotus that did start on those medium tyres.

You'll go deeper into this race before making his pit stop. Hamilton

leads this race, will he be in on the next lap? He be in on the next

lap? He's coming in the Mercedes team can deliver him a 2 second pit

stop, he has a real chance. He was one and a half seconds behind before

the stops. Looking at how Bottas cup as Maldonado, relatively

straightforward into Turn 1. Hamilton into the pits as Rob Bird

sets the fastest time around the circuit. -- as Rosberg set the

fastest time. 3.6. He gained a little bit but I'm not sure it'll be

enough. Rosberg passing the commentary box now. Side-by-side in

Turn 1, unfortunately Lewis as to make his way around the inner pit

lane area much slower. The gap is going to be the same, if not

slightly more, because Rosberg has aced the middle sector. Rosberg

retains his lead, but Hamilton is still close behind him, plenty of

time to go in this Grand Prix. Only on Lap 15 of 71 and Hamilton will

have to come up with a plan not to be beaten. At backed races by his

team-mate Nico Rosberg. Couldn't find a way past in Mexico, what can

he do here? Was that stop a problem or was it simply waiting for Vettel

to come in that delayed him? Watch the lights, looks like he's waiting

for the lights. It was Vettel who got in the way. Hulkenberg catchy

Maldonado. Should be very straightforward and it is, Maldonado

doesn't fight the position. On tyres that have done more work. Hulkenberg

sixth, ahead of him Valtteri Bottas. The first in from Williams

was great from Bottas, they had that three pace penalty on the grid and

it put him seventh, but there is Bottas running round in fifth

place. Getting ahead of Force India. Chasing Raikkonen. We plan to extend

this stint slightly, it will be longer than planned on this stint.

Rosberg will be looking after his tyres, usually effective at doing

that. Not much that could be done. Small attempt at defending, but

really you just pick up dirt on your tyres. Verstappen has been told to

control the gap to Grosjean behind him because we're into a long stint.

Hamilton has suddenly caught Rosberg, the gap down to half a

second as they crossed the line. There it is. Whether there was a

mistake on that last lap by Nico Rosberg I don't know, but it's got

closer. Then it opens likely because of that long Turn 3 and Hamilton

hasn't been fed the same clean air as Rosberg in front, Rosberg knows

that, that's the benefit of leading the Grand Prix. He'll be working his

tyres harder. TEAM RADIO: Lewis is trying quite hard. Which means he

may well be playing with engine settings and will have a certain

amount of prime engine settings they can use during the Grand Prix. At

this stage Lewis may be using all of them. I don't know the exact amounts

Mercedes will have, they might have ten available, which runs the engine

closer to its maximum qualifying potential. The downside is you use

more fuel. Therefore you don't have that available for later in the

Grand Prix. Really putting a charge on here, Lewis Hamilton, in his

attempts to close the gap up. This was the previous lap. Hamilton got

pretty close, didn't he? Yeah, the downside of carrying speed is it

compromises your line through, too. Let him see my car, you can pick up

things in your peripheral vision. Matter is chasing Maldonado because

Kvyat is already gone past. -- Felipe Massa. Kvyat is in seventh

place, Massa eighth. Lewis's tire surface temperatures will be going

through the roof as he follows his team-mate. One of the things about

this racetrack is most of the corners, 4-12, are in a 2 kilometre

stretch, so the tire surface temperature goes up and you tend to

slide. -- tyre surface temperature. You can't get the tyre to recover,

there is no straight to cool things down, that is why it's exacerbating

the problem. We can see Nasr going down the side of the McLaren, big

lock-up. Jenson Button is fair, leaves the door open. -- leaves.

TEAM RADIO: impossible to follow this track. Hamilton says it's

impossible to follow at this track. It's the nature in Formula 1 and

that it's terribly difficult with a loss of downforce, just like Mexico

last time when Rosberg has lead position, proving very difficult for

Hamilton. Grosjean moving out of the slipstream of Verstappen, not a

proper attempt to overtake. Like we saw Hamilton moving around behind

Rosberg, doing the same thing, poking the nose into the mirrors of

Max Verstappen. Verstappen has been showing a very good turn of pace.

Ricciardo in the pits. He went on to a set of mediums, now a second set.

I wonder if he can get to the end, might just be able to do it.

Raikkonen tip 35 laps on a set of mediums last year. He would have to

do 40 laps this year. Perhaps achievable for Raikkonen to do so.

This was Marcus Ericsson making a move on the McLaren of Fernando

Alonso. Very little Alonsoa could do about it. Back on board with

Verstappen. The Toro Rosso deems a part of what Verstappen has been so

impressive with is his consistency during the raids and his ability to

look after the tyres despite it being his first year. You saw Perez

ahead, oversteer through Turn 12, didn't get great early drive, which

is allowing Verstappen to really get into slipstream. An opportunity and

Perez knows it. Here comes Verstappen round the outside into

Turn 1, almost wheel-to-wheel. He is true, he's done it again! Another

mighty pass. -- he is through. It has allowed the other car of

Grosjean to come through because Perez lost so much momentum.

Grosjean going to have another go. Too far back but that pass is the

mark of a champion. Only his first season in Formula 1, but nobody does

that, doesn't give the position. It would be easy to think this would be

marginal but he is prepared to take the risk. And stay on the road which

is the great thing. That'll come into bit, we've seen Jenson Button

stop and go back out. He's had a pit stop. Vettel looking... He's going

onto the soft tyre, different strategy from Ferrari. Slightly

different look at this. strategy from Ferrari. Slightly

soft tyre longer than most other teams. Made me wonder if they might

do something different. He will come out in front of Bottas, his only

real challenger this afternoon. Raikkonen, I suspect, will be

neutralised by the team. Vettel is clearly faster, you will see Bottas

arriving in the background. Still a healthy margin, fantastic pass.

Round the outside, can't describe how difficult it is, gets himself

into position. He's not ahead, he's been squeezed. How does he do that

without losing his front wing? That was amazing, Perez must have

thought, I've got this corner, know I haven't. He got squeezed out as a

result. Brilliant, first-class driving, can you imagine seeing him

in a car running front? The race leader comes in for a second pit

stop on Lap 33, relatively early, you'd have thought, but on his way

once again and they've done it quickly from Rosberg. Hamilton comes

in straightaway we can assume he ran the tyres out, if he stays out he

may rue the fact he allowed the gap to grow to almost three seconds.

Basically on the Rosberg side of the garage they know they've got a

bigger safety margin at that top than the first, the gap was one and

a half seconds. TEAM RADIO: OK, Lewis, it's Hammer time. Because

Rosberg has made his stop. That's very interesting, he'll have to do a

long stint here, but it is achievable, Rosberg did a similar

stint last year around this track. Stevens and Rossi ahead of Hamilton.

He'll be in a situation where if he runs another lap you'll get into a

situation of losing lap time even if he's got what would normally be

clean-air ahead of him. Hamilton leading, Rosberg second. TEAM RADIO:

box, box, box, box. Going to respond straightaway. With the traffic, no

choice, perfect strategy for Rosberg because Hamilton didn't have any

opportunity. Here comes Lewis Hamilton from what was briefly the

lead, but it'll be back into second place and want again he'll be

chasing after his team-mate. Is he to be frustrated once again here in

Brazil? He has the pace, can't get quite close enough to put the attack

on Rosberg. Let's see where Rosberg did as he comes through the first

corner, very similar to how it was at the first pit stop. Look out for

the Ferrari that's going to come out. Hamilton will be behind

Raikkonen, not what he wanted to see. And the traffic of... Fernando

Alonso. In the McLaren. Not able to use the tyres. It never rains but it

pours. Further chink in the armour for Hamilton to try and get on the

back of Rosberg. Alonso gets out of the way, still comprises Hamilton in

his approach to Turn 6. Alonso has been lapped, so he has to get out of

the way, Raikkonen doesn't at all because he stayed out there on this

set of tyres, he's fighting for position. Raikkonen currently third,

Vettel fastest on track. Looking at Maldonado. On the Sauber Erickson.

There was contact. That's how it can go wrong. Between Verstappen and

Perez. That's what's so impressive about Verstappen, other than the

coming together with Grosjean in Monaco, clearly an error of

coming together with Grosjean in deliberate judgment on his part...

Hamilton going past Raikkonen. Fairly straightforward for

Hamilton going past Raikkonen. who moves to the inside as they come

across the start finish line. who moves to the inside as they come

him back past the Ferrari. The Turn 1 incident under review between

Ericsson and Maldonado. We haven't really seen whose fault it was.

Maldonado looks like he ran into the side of Erickson, who was slightly

ahead. I can't stress enough what a nice guy Pastor Maldonado is in the

paddock, one of the driver favourites.

RADIO: Nico Kranjcar going plan B. Plan B.

Maybe it means a third had stopped coming up because if they were not

maintaining that kind of pace, it would imply they would have to make

a third pit stop. I think you're right. That was Grosjean making a

move, I think, on Perez. That is an important position, that is for 12

place. He had lost that position to Grosjean, acrid temp too, so I do

know if he had a go at getting it back. A pit stop, that is why they

were so close together again. Maldonado had a little look at

Felipe Nasr again. Just to finish on the fuel thing, since the hybrid

element was brought into Formula 1, they use around 40% less fuel per

Grand Prix than we used to, so it's a definite step towards saving the

environment. After the pit stop, grows and had to do it again. That

is how he did it come a simple and straightforward pass on Sergio

Perez. There is Felipe Nasr, in ninth position. Maldonado right with

him. There will be an opportunity here with the DRS in operation.

Contact between him and the other Sauber, but this time it should be

mission accomplished well before he turns in, and that brings Maldonado

into ninth position, chasing after Hulkenberg. Sebastian Vettel onto

the back of Raikkonen as well. Others overtook him here. This is in

to Turn 6 and Raikkonen allows Vettel to go through. Keep an eye on

when Raikkonen will do his second stop. You see Daniel Ricciardo being

overtaken by Nico Rosberg. Pastor Maldonado, standard operating

procedure for the stewards, they probably don't change the name when

they type it into the computer to apply the penalties, they are so

used to him getting involved in something. A fairly straightforward

two-stop strategy, even if Mercedes are looking at three stops today.

Daniil Kvyat will be on his way and he will open more of a points gap on

his team-mate. If things stay that way. Grosjean side-by-side with

Verstappen. Romain Grosjean has got the Lotus passed the Toro Rosso.

They have been fighting for a long period and finally the Frenchman has

got past the Flying Dutchman. That is crucial for the final point.

Rosberg getting past Perez, lapping him of course, and Felipe Massa has

just pitted as well. There is Hamilton and the gap is that much

bigger, 2.8 seconds between the two leaders. It's the yo-yoing around,

going between the traffic. Verstappen goes defensive and

Grosjean manages to get the car stopped. Good comeback from

Grosjean. Into the pits comes Valtteri Bottas, from fit position.

He stays with the harder tyre, the medium compound tyre. Joining us

from the pit wall, team principal for Red Bull, Christian Horner. Talk

us through the various strategies a bit, Christian. Daniel Ricciardo has

been in, looks like a conventional to stop but Mercedes look like going

three stops? Yes, you've read it correctly. Daniil Kvyat is running a

standard two. He has got warmer tyres and Hulkenberg and that should

benefit him by the end of the race. Ricciardo is going for all three.

Are you seeing any surprises in the tyre performance today compared to

what you saw in practice? Not too much. A little bit higher but not

dramatically so. It's not too different.

you been surprised by the pace of Vettel in the Ferrari relative to

you been surprised by the pace of the Mercedes? Yes, he's been

impressive so far. Interesting strategy to go into that softer tyre

at this stage as well. It will be interesting if a pace car came out

now, that would really bring it alive. That would be quite fun. What

do you reckon of Daniel Ricciardo's opportunity to score points here,

Christian? There is always a chance. He's fighting with Perez. It is

still in the offing. Incomes Kimi Raikkonen right now. We are just

watching Daniel Ricciardo but I can tell you in the other Ferrari he is

coming into the pit lane and Ferrari looking at getting third and fourth

here which would be a solid result for them. Vettel's pace, he is

starting to drop away from Mercedes's leading pace, it has to

be said. He is on the option tyre, the soft tyre. We know Raikkonen,

that was a fairly healthy stint from Raikkonen on those prime tyres.

Raikkonen taking a gamble trying to mix it up with the soft tyre. He is

now starting to lose time to Hamilton, but Weekes begged them to

all do another stop. Ricciardo still trying to find a way past Perez at

the moment. The DRS is helping him up the hill but it is not getting

him it close enough to the back of the Mercedes powered Force India.

Let's listen to Vettel We are expecting that Mercedes will

do that as well and in comes Sebastian Vettel right now.

I don't know what caused the delay, but a quick Stopforth Sebastian

Vettel. Looks to be on target for a safe third position. What he wanted

was to outscore Nico Rosberg in order to be able to get himself into

second place in the championship, but right now Rosberg is doing

enough to secure second place in the championship. If he were to win with

Hamilton second and Vettel third, Rosberg will definitely finished

runner-up in the 2015 World Championship and Vettel's

opportunity to split the two miss Adey 's drivers will be over going

into that race. RADIO: So, box, box, box. We have

seen Vettel do it and we're going to see both of the Mercedes cars coming

in. There will be some anxiety. Let's listen up to this whole pit

stop process. Absolutely perfect. And no mistake

there. 2.6 seconds stop and here is a lunch from Ricciardo down the

inside of Perez, into Turn 1. If he's got the exit, he should be good

stop being before his. In comes Lewis Hamilton. We saw a great stop

for Nico Rosberg. Rosberg once again going past our commentary box

position. Pretty much where it was last time. Hamilton will be slower

as he exits the pit lane. It's d?j? vu, we've seen that twice before

where they are absolutely parallel to each other, one coming out of the

pits and the other on the circuit. Three drivers at the top of their

form driving a fantastic car, and Vettel has just had the fastest lap

of the Grand Prix, looking to try and put a bit of pressure onto the

back of Hamilton. Vettel has got some traffic to Maldonado. A lot of

traffic to get through, we want to keep that gap to Lewis.

He's going to bring him out back behind Sergio Perez once again.

Meanwhile Maldonado lining up Felipe Nasr. Grosjean... Hamilton will be

frustrated by this. Hamilton, sorry to talk about something that our

viewers can't see, but unfortunately the really important battle is at

the front and we are watching something down at the back. A big

lock-up with Hamilton. Really badly treated by Grosjean, holding him up.

That has allowed a gap of half a second to Rosberg in that middle

sector. Meanwhile a fascinating battle for somewhere in the middle

of the pack, treating the audiences around the world! This was Romain

Grosjean not making it particularly easy for Hamilton. He locks up and

you can see the damage being done to his tyre. Last time around it was

15-1 apiece between Rosberg and Hamilton.

It looked to me like he was trying to get and overspeed at the top of

the hill. I think Felipe Nasr was wise to that. Big lock-up ahead of

contact. I think he might have clipped the rear tyre of Felipe

Nasr. We know how susceptible these Pirellis are the punctures. Amazing

that he got away with it. Felipe Nasr overtook into the final chicane

at Spa and they didn't give enough room to each other, but that

line into Turn 4, Perez forced out wide. Not the traction he needs and

Ricciardo has made the move. Here comes Verstappen trying to find a

way past the Lotus. Well positioned by Maldonado, making it difficult.

We've seen people locked up and run into the car. I wondered whether we

would see it again. Maldonado in trouble with the tyres. Getting

those options to work for him. They have a shorter life, he's all over

the back of Maldonado. Look how slow he is to 11. Looking to be tidy on

his drive through 12. They've had a big race together in Austria earlier

this year. Maldonado had one of the saves of the year when he caught him

at one stage towards the first corner. Now it is Verstappen's turn

to return the favour. He has a slipstream here, here comes Max

Verstappen, he's going to go for it on the inside into Turn 1. Maldonado

will try to fight it, but he's not got the grip and Verstappen moves

into 10th place to claim a point for Toro Rosso and take a point away

from Lotus. Which is crucial. Six points is the difference between

Lotus and Toro Rosso. Grosjean will score two at the moment if it stays

where it is, which would even it out. Meanwhile upfront, as we see a

replay of this pass, Maldonado defends not -- decides not to

defend. Hamilton looks like he has thrown in the towel. The gap is 5.3

seconds to Rosberg. It has been qualifying that determined this

race, qualifying at the start because Rosberg nails the start from

pole position. There he is on his final lap, the gap 6.7 seconds

between himself and Lewis Hamilton. He is heading towards victory. The

him, he couldn't quite get through. As the stewards still deliberate the

another strong weekend for you. For sure, happy, happy to get pole

position and win the race in such a manner. The quicker Saturday and

Sunday, finishing the race seven seconds in front was awesome. It's

going well at the moment a bit late unfortunately, very late, but better

late than never I guess. Anyway, the side-effect is that finishing second

is good in the championship, better than third, even though my target is

not second. It's important to finish the season on a high looking at next

year. How easy is it for you to pinpoint what the changes have been?

Do you understand what the difference is at this stage of the

season from earlier? I worked very hard at it because it annoyed me,

like anything, to finish second to Lewis. I'm driving faster now as a

result, the hard work seems to have paid off. What is the hard work you

do? Working at it, trying to understand because last year I was

quicker in qualifying, then this year I'm slow in qualifying, there

has to be a reason. It's digging into it, trying to improve all the

bits and pieces possible and putting it all together. It's not just about

racing, strategy comes into it. It stops everything. Nico drove a

fantastic race at the end of the day, no doubt about it, he did a

fantastic job. He's been doing a fantastic job in qualifying. Of

course, I have to make sure I think in my mind about the progress of the

season, how things have changed. As I said in the press conference,

Singapore, there have been changes to the car. Which seems to have

shifted the direction. I need to find out why that is. And how I can

get back on it. Otherwise I felt really good today, I was racing,

pushing like crazy, I had nothing left. Unfortunately these tyres

don't allow you to erase all the way to the end. People watching the

racing, you can't see the air around us, if only you could you would see

the dirty air I'm getting, the closer I get to Nico. He would have

clear air. I lose downforce and damage my tyres more. I was looking

for any kind of options, if it was three stop, four stop, I would have

taken a risk of some sort, but the priority of the team is to get 1-2

and do the same thing. For us we were trying to put them under

pressure, trying something different with strategy, I don't think it was

a bad call, I think it was the right thing to do, we had nothing to lose

and in the end the placement was strong, lots of laps we were the

same pace, even quicker. Unfortunately the level too many

laps where we were slower, which is why they were able to pull away. The

gap was still there but it was a lot smaller than previous races. In

terms of what you thought heading into the Grand Prix, what the

progress as strong as you thought? You always say you are stronger on

Sunday. I think we were, six tenths, around half a second yesterday. It

wasn't half as I can do in the race, easy to do the maths. You end up 30

seconds behind, we were only 12 behind, so it's more like one or two

tenths per lap. Overall, the pace of the race was strong and I think the

main comparison you should make is where we were at the beginning of

the year on average and where we are now. Already in Mexico things are

looking good. We didn't manage to see the chequered flag. The place we

probably should have. The pace was there, so here we are able to

confirm and it's a good feeling to be a lot closer. Still, if you are

behind, it's never the place you want to be. First of all, top marks

to Nico Rosberg today, a confident and consider drive under what must

have been a lot of pressure from Lewis. He's been building himself

stuck to this. We were in amazement, what was happening to him as the

beginning of the season and for the last couple of races, certainly in

qualifying recently, he's been sensational. Interesting he can't

he's very hopeful and optimistic. It's very exciting and thrilling

when you see overtakes like Max Verstappen today. He belies logic.

No one in their right mind would take on those moves, but he has such

an air of confidence. What I love about him, it's not frantic, he has

it planned in his head, maybe three laps before because he's been

watching the car before him, when he said it moved away from him, he

planned his move absolutely. Magic. It really was, magic for Force

India, Williams, they are happy, consolidating their third and fifth

in the constructors. It's a very important and macro expensive sport,

if you don't have the right resources, income, technical

brilliance inside the team, associated people, you are lost.

This helps them plan the future. We heard what Claire said, money comes

into a pot, nothing gets spent unless it makes the car go quicker.

Then the other things are taken into consideration. The future looks

bright if the money is spent in the right direction. One more race to
