Day 2 Golf: Ryder Cup

He has done it again! No! What a shot!

STUDIO: This is the closing hole, beautiful views of the Perthshire

countryside, the opening day of the 40th Ryder Cup, the foreground of

this majestic scene, very much the focus of anxious attention from both

the European and American teams. Because fully for eight matches

yesterday went the distance to this point. -- four of the eight. There

was one in particular which seemed like it's changed the momentum in

the home side's favour, it was a 5.54 Graeme McDowell and Rory

McIlroy which really felt like a victory. They took a record three

and a half points, turning around the deficit from the morning for

balls, Europe, 5-3 ahead, when the satisfied captain Paul McGinley

headed back to the team room last night. As we have seen how important

momentum has been in Ryder cups over the years, America definitely got a

big momentum switch, and for these guys to come out so early, in the

afternoon, and reacts to that, in all four matches, that show strength

of character. This morning it was deja vu for Rose and Henrik Stenson,

beating on the opening for balls, this time against Bubba Watson and

new partner Matt Kuchar. -- on the opening for balls. Jamie Donaldson

and Lee Westwood have good memories of playing Jim Furyk yesterday, the

nine time Ryder Cup veteran now teaming up with the feisty Hunter

Mahan. Danish German partnership of Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer,

facing the red-hot rookies, Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, who dumped

Jordan and Gallagher. And it is Ian Poulter and not Garcia who rekindles

his partnership with Rory McIlroy. They faced the unbeaten and unbeaten

pairing of Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler. A ten footer for an opening

birdie, that put himself and Bubba head against Rose and Henrik

Stenson, the first time they have been behind in four matches.

Since the famous denim denoument at Celtic Manor he has waited a long

time. Double major winner Martin Kaymer

was all over the flag comedy again alongside Thomas Bjorn, to put some

blue on the board around Gleneagles for the first time this morning.

Meanwhile a word in your ear, captain Paul McGinley getting up

close and personal on the tee with world number one Rory McIlroy,

last-minute instruction on facing Rickie Fowler and Walker. And his

partner, Ian Poulter, the so-called postman, really itching to start

delivering some points. This was his approach to the first. It was an

opening lead. A beautiful strike. At the 3rd, Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan

flying as well, this part added up to a third birdie in a row, and took

that US into a 2 up advantage. -- and took the US. Plenty of birdies,

two and a row for Thomas Bjorn at the 3rd, two up against Jordan

Spieth and Patrick Reed, noise levels around the course

significantly increasing. Back to the top match, World Matchplay

champion, Matt Kuchar, weaving magic. -- former World Matchplay

champion Matt Kuchar weaving his magic with that budding grip,

Stenson, 2-0. As we pick it up, Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth Apple

backed a hole on Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer, one to the good for

Europe, the overall picture is tight.

COMMENTATOR: Henrik Stenson's second to the seventh. Playing with Rose, a

couple down. Nicely done. Jordan Spieth, his partner has

played, just missed the water hazard.

comes. He has taken some lovely ones yesterday. Big cheers around the

Jordan Spieth has duffed his second. But Patrick has played a little

beauty. Europeans just off the bat. Must be warming up, now bearing his

Rory McIlroy parting first, this is for a two. He has got it commonly

has got it, he has got it all of the way. Beautiful, it is a 2 for Rory

McIlroy. Rose, second to the par-5, must have a decent life, coming out

with a wood. Can't be... What a shock, what a

shot that is! Ripped it past the bunker. One of those ones that comes

out straight and fast, well done! After that fine two, this part to

half the whole, keep the match all square. What a boy!

CHEERING Had a reputation years ago of being

better putters, they are certainly showing wonderful parting form

today. Tasty touch... Matt Kuchar... Little ledge... That is what you

call mighty fine touch! Beautifully judged.

Best part 100 feet laid its stone dead, the US have a birdie and so

have Europe. Jamie Donaldson, at the 8th, this is too half the whole, and

yes... Well done. -- hole. After that wonderful second shot

from the wrath... Justin Rose. This is for an eagle, to win the hole...

Well, great effort. The match remains all square.

Martin Kaymer, for par, at the 8th. Looking ragged. Huge, huge, huge

putt! Just enough. Rose, on the 10th, first of the par threes on the

homeward nine, 192 yards. Jordan Spieth to half the hole.

Vital one. Up the hill. Extremely confident.

Next on the tee, Bubba Watson. Partnership, out in 31 for the front

nine, part of 35, super golf will four balls. The Americans, the

Europeans, number ten. Bitter breeze helping. Directly as

they come in, four, four yards in which to land it. Going high,

spinning. Pretty good. It's straight uphill

from there. 10th green, Justin Rose... First

player to have a chance of a too, just off the front of the green.

Taking four birdies today. Could be number five who has cut it.

Really nipped that one away, landing on the downslope, spinning back a

little. Bubba Watson, too half the hole, after that... He has done it!

Great stuff, this is wonderful play. The match remains all square.

Lee Westwood's third to the ninth, running shot, set up for a running

well that was played. Little rich, had to carry that and get the ball

to release, stone dead birdie at the 9th.

hit it. Europe go one up. Birdies everywhere you look! Could

Europe up in one, the final match all square. A real duel, wonderful

nine and ten. You have got to get your breath

the ninth. Down the hill, par-3 10th, pin front

left. Finding his rhythm... Pressure slightly off. He's going to

like this one if the distance is right, honing in on the flag. Great

opportunities at number ten, for the Europeans. Turning on the heat.

American pair of foul and Walker. Far left, had to be aggressive, paid

been holding them for fun, this morning, but this is a tricky one.

He has done it again, you know! Six birdies in a row for Justin Rose.

The crowds up here at Gleneagles have been so respectful... Quiet,

when they need to be quiet, and cheering when there is cheering to

be done. That was a big turnaround. Wonderful

sand shot from Rickie Fowler, now there is only one in it.

Counting up the birdies... One, two, three, four, five, six, seven,

eight, nine birdies so far. They are in a commanding position as holes

begin to run out. Brilliant bunker shot has kept them right in the game

in the bottom match. Evenly poised. Rickie Fowler... Fizzing one and

Could not have placed his tee shot in a better place, this is the ideal

the hole, beautiful tee shot, and a did not bounce up, this for eagle.

-- are lucky it didn't bounce up. It was a good strike, perfect distance.

Europe, that will be conceded I rather fancy. And the Europeans will

have putts for a half. Come on Ian, this is to halve the 11th, where is

that old magic, Edina macro magic... ? GASPING

Just not happening for him on the greens. -- Medinah magic. All

square. Stenson, Rose partnership have made

birdie on the eighth, 13. This is too half the hole. Incredible run.

Never anywhere else. CHEERING It is read everywhere you look on

the scoreboard, they remain two up. -- it is red. The leaderboard does

not tell you the whole story. Rose and Stenson two up. In the final

match, it is nip and tuck, all square. Henrik Stenson, second shot.

He and Justin Rose, they are two up. Punch down the hill with a 7 iron.

happening. This is the most magnificent of golf I have seen

certainly in Ryder Cup, it goes on, and on, and on. Stunning. 14 of the

15 holes, have been birdied. AWAY FANS: USA! USA! Patrick Reed,

seemingly impervious to these temperatures. A good contact swing.

Down! It was a fine shot. APPLAUSE The only ball on this green. They

are supposed to be somebody, but I'm not sure who. Couldn't be the

Sherlock Holmes appreciation society... ? CHUCKLES

. It's an awkward one for Thomas Bjorn. Not too bad. GASPING

long ones, chips, bunkers, a wonderful array of golfing shots.

After that beautiful tee shot on the 14th, this is for eagle, for Monday

and -- Hunter Mahan, currently three up, brilliant. Boy, we've seen some

scoring today but that's the first eagle we've seen! They will be four

up. CHEERING Reed has this to win, the par-4

13th, currently two up. And... Wonderful putt, three up! Well, Reed

and Speith are absolutely flying again. They'll definitely be playing

this afternoon. Rickie Fowler, 13th hole, match square. Poulter has

already played, he's in the greenside bunker. Pin, front, right

and that's a nap salute corker from Fowler. -- absolute corker.

Both Europeans played rather risky shots. This has ended up all right,

Justin Rose has a lie, he should get closer than his opponents and he

has. I should say he has! CHEERING CHUCKLES

Looks like another birdie, and all will be forgiven for the hot-headed

second. McIlroy, for his birdie on 13, the opposition are close. This

would be a great putt, to put on the pressure, it is not going to come

in, no. APPLAUSE Wonderful applause for Rose,

pitching out of the trouble on the right. Nine birdies on the trot he

has had. Eight of them abetted by Stenson.

Here's Bubba Watson. Now, one of these two shots has got to go into

half the hole. CHUCKLES APPLAUSE

He shaved it. Here's Jimmy Walker, his palm is

close but he has this for a birdie and it is tracking right in,

beautiful from Walker. -- his partner. The Americans go one up in

the last match, the first time they have nosed ahead and if things stay

like this, everything will be even going into the afternoon foursomes.

Back to Kuchar, got to go in. Running too hard. What a windfall

Rose and Stenson. -- what a win for them. What a win indeed, fantastic,

three and two. Well worth the effort and a sore throat. Know and the two

that, 12-under after 16 holes -- there is no answer to that.

Fabulous. Still holes to play, in fact all of them, I think the second

match, Donaldson and Westwood, Furyk, Mahan, has gone, and the next

one doesn't look good for the Europeans but the last match is very

important if you happen to be a European supporter or an American

supporter. Let's here from the winners, Rose and Stenson. One of

the greatest Ryder Cup matches in history, what did you feel and how

did you get in the zone today? Poulter always says, you wish you

could bottle it and take it with you, the Ryder Cup, you are forced

to focus, otherwise you will struggle if you look at the

distractions. We got onto a great rhythm today, I felt like I was

reading the greens so well. We macro you both played brilliantly. -- you

played really well together. How did you turn it around? It was tough in

the beginning. We played really well. From seven onwards, we made

wordy on every hole. We tried to square the match by the 16th,

because we knew that, we need a 6 or seven birdies, the way they were

playing. It took two holes, we made birdie and that was the start of it.

Will you be sticking together, how about your ailing back? It is OK. I

think his back could be sore. I am taking the afternoon off and getting

ready for the singles tomorrow and I will be out supporting them in the

afternoon. Wonderful tee shot. 35 feet for his eagle. To win the hole.

Don't think he has hit hit, has he come he has, it's a good putt,

certain birdie. Keeping the pressure form on -- firmly on Bjorn and

Kaymer. Hunter Mahan, downhill on the 15th, second shot, he and Furyk

are four up. Westwood is in relatively close. In the hole, just

missed! Kaymer with his attempt. Birdied the first three, they've

only had one since. This has got to go in and it doesn't. Four down,

with four to play. Jimmy Walker, this measures 285 yards. For this

morning 's play. Just short, it's OK, nice shots, when you are in

command of the match. Not doing anything silly.

I think he might have too much club, if he has a driver, if he catches

it. I think he will have the aim down the left, cut it in, certainly

plenty of club for him. APPLAUSE

It's OK. It will be very awkward if it had tipped into that little

hollow. Lee Westwood with this to win the

hole. And for the European point of view, definitely needed. GASPING

No. APPLAUSE Hunter Mahan to win the match. Four

and three, if this goes in. And it does. It is a win for the United

States. The match at the moment, 6-4, in Europe's favour but this has

been another good match. That we have seen on this second morning.

McIlroy just off the green. The short par-4. Long putt. Leaving the

flag is a bit of a cushion, he will be delighted if it goes stone dead,

drifting away a bit. Getting closer and closer, how close is that? I

don't think it's stone dead. APPLAUSE

Looking down on the narrow 15th green, Jordan Speith, second shot.

Nice hop forward. Didn't quite clamber onto the back level but a

lovely shot nonetheless, they are in command of this match.

Everyone looking a little nervous around the 14th green. Rory has got

this for a birdie three, Henrik Stenson is inside him, they are one

down, he makes it, confidently. Well done, Rory. APPLAUSE

Jimmy Walker for a birdie, to half the hole, to stay one up, just left

of centre. He is fearless, this fellow, very good. APPLAUSE

Martin Kaymer with the flag out, he really needs to whole -- he needs to

hole this, a good effort, but shaking of hands. Patrick Reed and

Jordan Speith, five and three victors over Thomas Bjorn and Martin

Kaymer, they were just too good this morning, a couple of early mistakes

from the Europeans and never clambered their way back. There it

is, five and three victory. The match score, 6-5. Now Walker, a

newcomer to Ryder Cup golf. For the United States. How well he has

played. Hasn't shown any nerves at all, has been absolutely tremendous.

It's all right no danger there. Martin, you made a great start, two

up after the first three, what went wrong? Well, we didn't play

consistently enough, there was always one man who missed the green

and the other one could not be aggressive with the birdie putt. The

first five holes we played fine, but then, we found it tough to get out

again. They didn't make many mistakes so it was tough to get

anything going. Especially around the turn, you know, we should have

made a couple of birdies coming in, but we couldn't. It is tough to win

holes, without birdies. Europe need something to happen, it looks like

they could go three up on the 10th, they are one down. Poulter driving,

no magic so far from him in a day and half. So, so. Patrick, another

success with another red-hot rookie. You two have certainly formed quite

a partnership, how did you turn it around today? I came out on a slow

start, he was carrying me through the six holes, I started hitting

some quality shots and my confidence got up. Jordan made it pretty easy

on me, by keeping his ball in play, doing that I was able to get going.

Once we smelt the blood we were able to take it. Jimmy Walker. The middle

of the green, Rickie Fowler, next to play. Really sick lie. Gouged it

out? He has. It is a dandy, it really is one of the best. Coming

out of the thick stuff. Hitting the downslope. APPLAUSE

Appreciative clapping. The lonely Viking. Poulter with his third shot

on the 15th. He and McIlroy are one down. The opposition are in close.

They are back, the Poulter fans. If you cannot hole on the green, why

not offer them -- why not from off them? The real Poulter has suddenly

arrived, look at that, beautiful shot, it looks good here, look at

it, look at it, boom. What a noise ringing across the golf course.

this week. If they were to win this it would be 6-6, and if they were to

lose it, it would be 7-5 and there's an enormous difference in the

matches. This is to half the 15th and to retain their ten bleed and

have done it. -- retained their lead. What a vital point this is

Here we come, Jamie Donaldson will be playing with Lee, that's a

surprise. Zach Johnson, and Jim Furyk. Matt Kuchar. McIlroy, with a

long iron, what do you fancy, Ken? What club? A 4 iron, 3-iron into the

breeze, it has to be Sunday best, don't miss to the right. That was a

good connection, it sounded sweet. It is all right. He thought it was

enough but it weren't by at least one club. Tasty. Very, very tasty.

Fowler now pitching up, third shot with a tight lie and he has fluffed

golf is a fuddy-duddy game played by old men and ageing ladies. You

wouldn't think so if you were here today.

Putting, for safety 's sake, or is he, he's not, he's chipping up,

played it well. But that's four. His partner is in the bunker for three.

Jimmy, this is from a birdie. Nice lie, flipping underneath it hard. He

has flipped well. The United States look like they have a stone cold

five but the Europeans will have two putts, to win the hole.

A great moment for Ian Poulter to do it again. He might swallow

himself... CHEERING And he has, would you believe it's

humanly possible? ! He's been playing to a steady five handicap

for a day and a half and suddenly, wham, bang, thank you and I am on my

way. Match all square. CHUCKLES He's back, he's back, by popular

demand. Now from European point of view, they want to macro balls on

the green, the long par-3. On the green...

-- looking for two balls on the green. Not bad I suppose, but not

great. Match all square, it will be one of Rory's hi cutters. He can

never resist a flag, it is the 5-iron. APPLAUSE

Pretty good. Walker, newcomer to Ryder Cup golf, he's been

magnificent so far. His partner is in trouble, half plugged in the

sand. Match all square. What happened there? That sounded like a

missed cue altogether. Would you believe it? What nerves do. That's

the situation:... Fowler, out of the sand, half

plugged. Might help him, in a way, he might get some run on the ball.

Not bad, but not close. APPLAUSE He's had a couple of miracles on the

last two holes, this is for a two, and he has fluffed it. That was an

anti-climax if ever I saw one. Anxious looking Tom Watson. Rory now

within putt to win the hole. Two, might win it. It's good speed. Very

good speed, nice and tidy. Very slippery putt, but that's a 3.

Fowler has made some to reflect putts in this match so far. -- made

some terrific putts. And he does it, brilliant! He's without nerves,

marvellous player, all to play for, with one hole left.

You have just got to make sure, that your feet don't slip, lucky with

this lie, just looking to lay up to leave 100 yards for his third.

That's OK. A little hollow there, you can see where the flag is. Not a

bad spot. He has hurt his hand digging it out. Rickie Fowler, not a

bad lie, risking the fairway wood, he can chase it up. If he really

catches it... Sounded a little heavy and maybe to

the right... ? Oh, brilliant. Brilliant result. What a fabulous

stroke. Just tiptoed over the bunker. Majestic! Now, Rory.

Opposition has played a beauty. Open green, 31 yards from the front, but

the left-hand side. Watch how he is looking, he's worried it is going to

the right. He does not like it. He is not going to escape. No, he's

not. Poulter, just watch what happens to the club when he hits

it, it gets tangled up. Snagging it, and that can be painful. Poulter

about 100 yards from the flag, third shot.

How about that! This is a magic day. It is a magic day.

Anxious team-mates looking on, Rickie Fowler with a putt for an

eagle three on this final hole, to win the match. It would be poetic

justice if it finishes all square. What a fabulous day, both sides

could say, we could have, we might have... In the end, it is 8.5,

could say, we could have, we might it is a very honourable .5 indeed!

-- it is a .5. Europe just one point ahead, and a fantastic morning to

play. STUDIO: Coming to the 16th, Mr Ryder Cup turns up! Felt like a

victory. We were lucky on 15, Ricky has hit a fantastic shot. Looking

like going to down, that would have been tough to come back from. --

Rickie. Cheeky little chip, keeps the door open, nice birdie at 16. We

played great, Rory played very solid, I had a sleep through the

middle of the match. Rory said, the mail was late! Better late than

never! Rory, Beardsley, another situation. This has been the story

of your Ryder Cup so far. How important in the overall scheme of

things could this half the? They be not as important as the half that

Sergio and I got last night, but it is important. America could have

drawn that but they did not. We are still a point ahead going into the

foursomes and we are in a good position. It was important. But we

still have four points to try to get this afternoon. All of the boys will

go out and play strongly. COMMENTATOR: Confirmation of the

have not had any return from three matches so far. Dustin Rose destined

to play in every session, but with Henrik Stenson resting his back,

Martin Kaymer comes in, the last two U.S. Open champion the freewheeling

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, whose confidence is surging. Sergio

Garcia returns from his morning off to accompany Rory McIlroy, he's into

the long haul with five matches. Both Jim Furyk and Hunter were

brilliant this morning. Europe have the rock-solid Victor Dubuisson and

Graeme McDowell in the anchor roles, facing the unbeaten Jimmy Walker and

Rickie Fowler, both of whom have produced some fantastic stuff. Zach

Johnson renown for his deadly short game, apparent to all, when this

went in at the 1st. No need for Matt Kuchar to get the party out.

Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth birdied the third. -- bogeyed the

third. The Texan Reid, with birdied the third. -- bogeyed the

surefire birdie chance, taken, to go back to all square. -- the Texan

Patrick Reed. Westward and Donaldson chasing their game from the start

after losing the first but Donaldson's second shot to the fifth

would pick them back on level terms, with 38-year-old rookie so

self-assured at Gleneagles. Hunter Mahan and Jim Furyk lost

their opening hole, here at the 2nd lost even further ground, two down

after two, against Garcia and Rory McIlroy. In the final match, the man

from Cannes. Youngest member of the European side, Victor Dubuisson,

second to the 3rd hole, such magic yesterday and does it again.

Forced to have a shout at this very tight front pin. Anything coming out

short is going to spin back. Pretty well judged.

This is for two, to win the hole for Graeme McDowell and Victor

Dubuisson, and go for up. The latter has hit some fantastic shots today,

he has only played six holes, and he is there! Four up. These two are on

fire. Americans to down, this is for

birdie, the Europeans inside them, you can see the marker. This is a

crucial part for Zach Johnson, he is good under pressure. Absolutely

Brilliant performance. Many, many Ryder cups for Lee Westwood, and

still giving everything and performing for Europe. And the

Rocky, Donaldson, he will be around for a few years, absolutely

comfortable in this arena. -- rookie. There it is, that's the

point, Donaldson and Westwood win. Let's hear from them. Gentle men,

two out of three ain't bad together. Why has this partnership done so

well, what's been good about this? The foursomes golf, we gelled really

well. We brought the best out of each other in the foursomes, that is

the hardest format. We did not gelled so well in the 4-ball which

was bizarre, because that is the easier format. Foursomes, one bad

shot and it is difficult to make par. But we played really well

together. Hitting a lot of fairways and greens and we made some putts,

overall, really solid. Five under-par through 17, and your 23rd

point, inching closer to the all-time record of 25, you must take

some pride in that? I am pleased to have put European points on the

board, but I am proud to have been on six winning Ryder Cup sides.

Somebody has just told me I have gone past the total of Seve which

means a lot. I am sure. Why have Europe had the better of it in the

last few days in this format? I think the team getting on together,

we work harder for each other, I don't know, everybody seems to play

well in foursomes. The board is showing it at the moment. Thank you

very much. Patrick Reed, par putt. No, no, no, no no! McIlroy, trying

to hit the 14th, the part for comedy has the length, 3-wood, it will go

up in the air. He is leaning as though it is towards the right. It

came back into the bunker, that was a good break, it will be a very

simple bunker shot. It is a tight game, this little tiddler, but he

has missed a few, but I don't think he will miss this one. CHEERING

Well, that alters the situation a little bit, Game one, won by the

Europeans, second, all square. Mahan with a wild tee shot, Furyk

could only get to hear, this is the third shot on the short par-5. He's

played a good one, Europe are in the bunker. That's three, the best they

good contact. But, catching the sand. United States team have played

three shots already, about six or seven feet away, second shot of

Well he's been playing so well but that was a nervous one. Five up with

five to play. Europe are giving the United States the Blues at the

moment, I tell you what, some crunch moments, the United States needs to

wriggle something out of this otherwise they could get onto the

singles are long way behind. Kaymer, this is not an easy one, this bank

coming out in front of him. He needs to play just to the left of that.

No, he's not been at his best. It was a tricky shot. But that is poor.

wanted? Absolutely, you do not expect to get away to start like

that at this level, the boys were playing there for the match of the

weekend, we were aware. We were fresh. We wanted to show them how

energetic and ready we were, it was a good start and we did our job

hitting the fairways and greens and they made mistakes and we were away.

It's been a lot of fun playing alongside this guy, very talented.

Ridiculously talented. I hit some fairways, he knocked the flags out

with his irons and we made some putts. It was a lot of fun and a

pleasure to play with him. A superb debut, on the outside you look calm

and cool, what are the emotions like on the inside? The emotions are

strong but I manage, yeah, just to stay calm. You know, today we both

played really well. And I think the key of the win, is that we didn't

make any mistakes. COMMENTATOR: After Furyk knocked his bike, Hunter

will have to make this too half the hole. -- he knocked his by. On they

It was fantastic. -- yes, it was fantastic. Especially today

alongside Sergio, we turned things around. Tomorrow we need to go out

and win the session, it was very important not to think, you know,

with four points, four and a half points, it's enough. We need to try

to win our matches, everybody. You know, when as many as possible. You

know, that's the main focus tomorrow. That's what will try to

do. What did you decide to change, after the final hole? Just my

mindset, it has been fairly negative, I had plenty of chances

and I could not make the putts. In Match Play you have do forget about

it, I said, it feels like nobody wants to win this match, let's try

to eagle, on 18 and see what happens. Brilliant putt. Three and a

half points for you personally, but put in context how valuable that

half point is in the overall status of the match. They can come down to

half a point, a point, the last bunch of years, that is why you

fight so hard for these half points. Anything which gets us towards 14

and a half is massive. Ten six has a good sound to it for me. Europe

leading 10-6, leading by four, going into tomorrow's singles. How do you

feel about sitting on a 10-6 lead on Saturday evening? I feel good, good,

but plenty of work to be done, the players feel great, but plenty to be

done. Twice it has been overturned, a 4-point lead going into the

singles, I don't want to be the captain that loses that initiative.

We have spoken about this, what happened at Medina, a couple of

years ago, you have uploaded it with the jitters. I have, we have got big

hitters, we know we have the advantage. -- you have uploaded --

top loaded it with the big hitters. The Americans have shown terrific

spirit, they have won two sessions, we have 12-macro sessions, -- we

have 12-macro sessions, we are getting ready for tomorrow.

10-6, this is a scoreline we know, Mark James is a 7 time player and

captain at Brookline, the last time America managed to overturn a

scoreline of that, it can be done but how likely is it at Gleneagles?

I think it's unlikely, the European team is too strong, they are pretty

much unbeatable. I see them carrying on the way they have been doing and

moving further away. Let's talk about the action from this morning,

the 4-ball is, in a merry -- in many respects, it was America's morning.

It was Justin Rose who stole the show. Ken Brown said it was the best

he had seen him play. You would concur? Rose was brilliant, Stenson

was almost just as good, 12-under after 16, unbelievable. Ian Poulter,

Mr Ryder Cup, chest beating, he reappeared for that fighting half.

How much personally did he need that performance? It will help him

tomorrow, I would imagine he would be let down by the first day, it

would have got him back into the groove, yet him feeling before the

singles. More confident with his more goal.

He's a veteran for the Ryder Cup, but Jamie Donaldson, at the age of

38, his debut, and Victor Dubuisson, charismatic and enigmatic, what have

you made of his performances? He looks like he's born to play golf at

the highest level, unperturbed bubble and talented, some of his

iron shots were fantastic. -- he cannot be perturbed. Amazing talents

to find for a Ryder Cup team. I said the Lee Westwood and Jamie

Donaldson, that two out of three ain't bad. But looking at the four

sons, of the European team, adding up both sessions, 7-1, they have

dominated, what is your theory on why it was so dominant? You can get

better results in four balls, it is easier for players to feel more

comfortable if you are not playing so well but in four balls -- in

foursomes it is more difficult, historically Europe has done better

in four balls because historically, in the distant past we didn't have a

better team. This week we have the better team, that is why they

thrived in the foursomes and you would expect it to continue

tomorrow. We will see where it will finish tomorrow. What is your theory

on the way the captains have stacked the order for tomorrow, how would

you assess these pairings? It was a no-brainer, Watson has got to get

points, stacking on the front, looking to get people to win matches

to get some momentum shift to them. Like Europe did at Medinah.

Obviously, poor little where America have to do that. There's no other

option -- Paul is aware. He will stack the front to block that

tactic. There is only two results, we win easily or it is close. Maybe

hold a couple back until the end. Absolutely ruthless under pressure.

The draw looks relatively neutral. I don't think one side will say it's a

fantastic draw tomorrow. I expected to be relatively even with Europe

may be just winning a point or two, further ahead. What about the

performance of both captains, Tom Watson said, I have a trust in my

players they can get it done and no regrets about not playing Phil

Mickelson today. He has gone onto divulges that Phil Mickelson

clobbered him hard to play today. But he had to be told, no, you will

sit out, it was a big call. Tom is there to take the big decision, and

Phil is there to do what he's told generally. He might not have liked

it. Tom knows what's going on, he has been there before. He's in the

Dutch. -- he's in touch. I looked at the afternoon foursomes line-up he

put out and it was pretty good, our team played better, it was not the

wrong thing to do. Phil should perhaps realised Tom does know best.
