Day 2 Highlights Golf: The Masters

Good afternoon. We are live from Augusta. Coming up soon highlights

of the second day's play but as you have probably been hearing

overnight, there's a big story brewing here involving the world

number one, Tiger Woods. And suggestions that he might be

disqualified from this, the 77th playing of the Masters Tournament.

It stems from an incident in yesterday's second round. This was

Tiger at the long par 5 15th. It's the third shot. A magnificent shot

Amazing, but fantastically unlucky to have hit the flag stick and

what will he do? He will have to take a drop. Will he go to the

dropping zone? He has a good look up by the

water's edge here. He assesses his options. He doesn't

like them and walks back. Walks back to where he played the

original ball, you will see the divot mark on the turf. He looks

around, and as he says himself, he drops a couple of yards away. But

it's the positioning of that drop that is in question. That is the

area of contention. He gathers himself. And under the

circumstances, performs something of a miracle shot here. It's worth

stunning recovery from Woods. He would make that putt for a one over

par score of six. It looks like that's a miracle recovery from

Woods and this is how he explained his decision-making process about

wasn't very good in the grain, tough shot. I went back to where I

was and took two yards further back and tried to hit the shot another

two yards off of what I felt like I hit it.

However, the United States Golf causing all of the confusion and in

Woods' case I am sure anxiety over this. If it is illegal he has

therefore signed for an incorrect score on his card. He is still in

the field, as we go towards round three. Wayne and Peter are with me

this morning. This is going to be confusion for a lot of golfers who

have always been thought you can go as far back as you like as you

cross a water hazard. Explain what's going on here, Wayne. He had

three options. Play from where he played originally, go to the drop

zone or where the ball last crossed the hazard and it wasn't in the air,

it was when it hit the flag and went back to the water which meant

if he used that point between himself and the flag to go back as

far as he wants he would be about 60, 70 yards further to the left.

He choose to go back where he has a drop as near as possible to where

he played the previous shot. your mind, has he transgressed

rules, Peter? Jack Nicklaus said that the rules were there for

honest men but there to be used, in the right way. I feel that Tiger,

with his sense of the game and understanding of the rules tried to

use the rules to his advantage. He thought this drop area, and it's

all muddy, I will go back there. But he didn't drop the ball as near

as possible. There seems to be some confusion as to what nearest

possible is. It's not in my mind. You drop it as near as possible.

You don't go two yards away. The rules of golf are very, very

complicated. Well, I hope he doesn't disqualify, makes the game

foolish. We have the most famous golfer in the world in bother, the

most famous youngest golfer in a spot of bother. Neither really did

anything totally wrong. Yet it may cause a hell of a furore in the

world of golf at that majestic place where everything is perfect

most of the time. You talk about the youngest, that's Guan Tianlang

and he was you given a one-shot penalty for slow play. It's all

going on and the repercussions. Let me show you two freeze frames of

the original position of the ball. There we are.

This is where Tiger played the next shot from. You can see the divot in

front of him. It's approximately two yards back as he says. It's a

contentious topic. Wayne, has he done something wrong and should he

be disqualified? Well, it's not rules dejour. You are supposed to

drop as near as possible. He made the comment I went back two yards

so he wouldn't hit the flag again. So he knew what he was doing. There

is a question of, if he hadn't said that would it have been picked up?

I have spoken to other commentators from other networks that said they

picked it up yesterday straightaway and made the question. They were

getting calls and texts straightaway about that situation.

Yeah, it's not pick and choose rules. They can't penalise the

young Chinese boy for slow play and then choose not to penalise Tiger.

What amuses me in this is the fact that the young lad, the 14-year-old

got penalised, they were taking six hours to go around and he is the -

because they're keeping their place. If you go around the M25 at 20mph

everyone's slow. Everyone's in their place. We will see what you

are talking about and we watch highlights shortly. Obviously, from

the minute Tiger Woods is still in the field. The third round is about

to get under way. Let me show you exactly what happened in the

context of the entire highlights of yesterday's play.

Let's review the situation before we hand to commentary for

highlights of the second day from the Masters here at Augusta. This

is the situation. You will see a few changes early on.

Conditions have been a little the 4th and we will join Wayne

Grady And Andrew Cotter and Peter Good effort. Going along not too

Oh my goodness! Five at the first. Didn't birdie

crowd favourite. The 11th

and just hangs on the edge. He is playing very nicely.

Extraordinary golfer. He is not a million miles behind the leaders, I

can tell you. Shaky putter sometimes. McIlroy,

this is for par. That's two over, early in the round. Did well

yesterday to get himself back in red figures.

The rain is coming down, although we didn't get the thunderstorms

they predicted last night, thank goodness. Couples having a little

tap-in. This is at the 6th. Goes to 4-under.

youthful Sandy Lyle held a put on the last hole to win this and he's

done it again! If only we'd seen it. Keep it going for the weekend. Well

a bounce. Look at that! There's no luck here, you know! Two

over par. Thomas Bjorn is smiling. Get a picture of that, quick.

Sixth hole, McIlroy. Oh, no. It's Couples at the eighth. Brighter

prospects here at the eighth. One back to three under. Up and down.

Minor disruption and moving some furniture, second shot of McIlroy.

Good lie for this pitch. Well done. African who is here with us in the

United States. Big whack from the top of the hill. Trying to get it

between the two bunkers. Good line. Well done, Sir. Couldn't go in,

could it?! Oh, well, nearly as good as a good UN that one, a tremendous

shot. The par putt for McIlroy now.

That's in for an unlikely three. The shot that matters is the last

one to play. Two over. Here is Paul Lawrie. A difficult day yesterday,

but going nicely. Here he is at the 15th. Got it back to two over for

the tournament. This is his third shot. Another one of those that

spins stone dead. Nearly into the hole for a three. Well done, Paul.

Opening tee shot for Mark Leishman, joint overnight leader, 29-year-old

Australian. Nerves will be tingling. Not a lot

of reaction yet. But he'll be happy with that. Good opening tee shot.

Pushed his shot into the bunker from the fairway. Third shot, a

difficult one, down the length of the green. Dribbled away. Pretty

good. Par five, remember. He's three under. Peterson, second shot

of the third and a few yards to land this in. Oh, how about that!

Now lives in America, Pettersson. Here is Fernandez with his funny

little grip and delicate stance. He holds a lot of putts, misses a lot

mind you, but he does hold a few. Ninth hole, Dustin Johnson couldn't

have put it any better. Straight up the hill. Five under. I would just

like to play a game like he does once.

Leishman on his way. Johnson the closest pursue ir, then four

round. The chance for a birdie at the eighth up the hill. And in it

goes. Steady start for Phil Mickelson.

I like the purple. Lovely outfit. Four pars to start this round now.

Where's this one off to? It settles strokes on the two opening holes,

72 yesterday. You just have to listen over the

good break. He's got four-and-a- half feet for a birdie now, no, an

eagle. Mike Weir, very, very short green

to take the lead. And it's in. He's taking care of the tough conditions

out there today, Dustin Johnson, leader at six under.

Well, this is a huge one. Could be a timely eagle for McIlroy. In it

goes. Eagle three for McIlroy. Suddenly, it's turned for him. Even

putt is good. Lynn stays four under. tricky this, a bit deeper than it

looks. Here is Justin Rose. The putting has been better this year.

Par Three. Playing all the way up the back left today. Strange choice.

No-one does pitches and runs any more. A long way down. That looks

to be on a decent line. That gap between the bunker is no more than

Oosthuizen made it two here last year. In a rather weak pitch up to

here on the Par Three, the putter cannot save him here. Very, very

from the Masters. There has been a review of the incident which you

He has though received a two-shot penalty and will start day three at

Let's show you what's been happening to this youngster, Guan

Tianlang. This is the European Tour chief rules official. He is warning

Guan Tianlang at least two or three times in the round that slow play

may cost him a penalty stroke. Ultimately at the 17th that is the

action, the course of action that he took with the youngster, the 14-

year-old. He was indeed given a penalty stroke at the 17th. And

finishing the day with a round of 75. Putting him on 4 over par.

Let's get his thoughts over the controversy and his performance so

Do you think the decision was fair or unfair? Little bit on 17th green,

No, I think I had a wonderful week so far. Really enjoy it and there

what did you make of today? It was much better, didn't get a great

11th. John Senden for a birdie. Oh, just slow enough to creep in at the

side door. Four under. Birdies This is not any easier than the

previous one. Furyk currently only one shot back.

David Lynn, shot 68 yesterday. First round at Augusta for a birdie

for a round of 73. Yes, just nicks it in. Not a bad

day. Much tougher day today. Three under par and three behind.

Furk going with the putter. -- Furyk. One lapse of concentration,

perhaps a bit nervey and suddenly, Leishman. Up the bank it goes. It

was always going to be tough. Terrific round. 71 for Couples and

Woods is looking ominous, currently at five under.

Leishman to retain the lead. This for par at 14.

This is where it all started to unravel for Dustin Johnson earlier

in the day. He was seven under in the leader coming to the 14th.

Pretty good effort though from Leishman. He's handled himself

extremely well. So we have a tie for the lead. Five under par. Tiger

Woods, Fred Couples and Marc Leishman.

Choi. A little tap in and he should recently with his rib injury. Three

under par in the Masters. He loves this place!

Jason Day for a birdie at the tenth. Yes. Top of the leaderboard. KJ

Choi 14th. This for his par. He looked a little bit low.

going. Absolutely delightful. but is it handsome? Oh! Nearly

straight in, not quite far enough up the bank. Hugging the pin.

Leishman at the 16th. This for a par just a little bit of movement

required. Oh, it stayed. You lucky boy. I don't know how that happened.

That was quite extraordinary. very good shots. He rolled her in.

Not too many starts like that in the history of this event.

Donald just four strokes behind the lead now. Oh...

His short game hasn't been quite as sharp as they have been. Take your

time. The stroke going for Donald at the 12th. The 18, Lee Westwood

early on. The fifth. A couple of birdies. Nice, solid round without

anything spectacular happening. Jim Furyk. Can he follow? Yes, he does.

Nice round from Jim, apart from the one hole of the 15th. Four way tie

for the leads in the Masters. Two of these gentlemen hail from

Australia. Leishman and Day making their presence felt. Westwood with

that wonderful birdie at the last has made his presence felt too in

the large group at three under. Schwartzle, a former champion for

South Africa. Dustin Johnson, a horrible finish for him when he had

required. This could come far enough up. Just

needs to stop there. Now it will go. This will go. This could be very

close. Urging it down, the crowd. That'll do very nicely. Near enough

a kick-in for a birdie. No wonder flag there. To his left it might be

moving. Oh, it's short. And gone. Oh, no sooner had he moved into a

share of the lead then he flew too wants to point it left. That's a

140. 134 holes. Absolutely lovely J Justin Rose. What a shot that was,

using the contours of the 18th green. In she goes. Westwood did

finishing with the birdie, finishing on three under par and

just two off the lead as it stands. Well placed to go into the weekend.

Day on the 12th. Not gone back to the troping zone. He's dropped it

close to the water as he's allowed to do there -- dropping zone.

Schwartzel has been in trouble. This could be good. Feed down and

He nearly birdied it. He should they've taken to get here.

7-iron for Jason Day. It's the right club. Beautiful shot

from Jason Day. Another good birdie opportunity. Another chance to take

water. Fowler in the drink. Costly, to go way to the left and just

right to the edge of the slope and Jason Day, once more a putt to take

the lead on his own. He has it! Judged it beautifully. Jason Day,

out in front. One more birdie and he will - he leads the Masters on

of affairs to an end. That's a treuble-bogey -- triple-bogey. A

long way back at the weekend for keep him at 4-under par.

The putter fails him at the last. He will be a very cross Tiger.

Hitting the pin, going into the water. A slip at the last. He is

three shots back at the end of his I played well today. 15 and I

flagged it on 18 and I hit the first putt too hard. But my score

doesn't quite indicate how well I played today. HAZEL IRVINE: Jason

the halfway point in the Masters with a birdie. How pleasing was

that? It was nice. Obviously, I had six birdies today and going with

yesterday's round had six, as well. If I can get out there and just

play some smart golf and try and stay patient and really just focus

on myself, hopefully we can play well tomorrow.

HAZEL IRVINE: Round two was definitely Jason Day's day. He is

one shot ahead as we come to round three.

The likes of the British challengers, Rose and Westwood and

Lynne all within a few shots. Tiger Woods has been docked a couple of

shots. To give you an idea of who is with

us for the weekend, Ernie Els and so too Sandy Lyle, 25 years after

winning here at the Masters. Great to see him here. Phil Mickelson

said he was really going to attack the course yesterday. It did not

come off, that strategy. Guan Tianlang makes the cut. The young

amateur, the 14-year-old, despite receiving that penalty for slow

play. Bubba Watson, he is the first man out on the course this morning.

I mentioned Tiger Woods and if you have been watching from the start

of this programme you will realise that at one point it looked as

though he might be disqualified. He's not been disqualified. He has

been given a two-shot penalty. It's for this incident at the 15th

yesterday in the second round. This was the tpheurl approach -- initial

approach. It hits the pin and spins back. Very unfortunate. He assessed

his options and did not elect to play from the drop zone. Afterwards

he told us that he had instead decided to miss out playing from

there and play from a couple of yards back from his original divot.

This was a remarkable recovery, I am sure having just watched the

footage there. At that point it looked like all was well. This was

the original divot on the right. He moved it back. Consequently, he is

deemed retrospectively to have made a mistake. This is the ruling. This

is it: It transpired afterwards they have

given him a two-shot penalty. This is because in the last two years

the United States Golf Association has deemed that with the advent of

television evidence they have the right to retrospective inflict a

at 1-under par. It's all been happening this morning! Peter and

Wayne are with me. We discussed was he in the right or wrong? It's now

universally accepted he was in the wrong, what do you make of the

penalty that's been imposed? Rubbish. It's not a trial by video

situation. He came in to a press conference after and said, I

intentionally dropped the ball two yards further back. Then it was

only confirmed by video later on. He had actually admitted to doing

that in his post-round press conference. The ruling is rubbish,

I think. You think he should have been disqualified? Absolutely.

Tiger was trying to use the rules and the rules are there to be used

in the nicest possible way. They're there for honest and sensible

people. He tried to sort of of tweak it to get an advantage. I

think he is extremely lucky to still be here, I agree with what

Wayne says, but big people in sport get away with - I am old enough to

remember - playing tennis behaving badly and they got away because

they were big names and put bums on seats. He is going to have

everybody watching today. Our live coverage starts at 7.30pm. The

other talking point from yesterday was the young amateur, Guan

Tianlang. 14 years old and a marvellous achievement having

become the youngest ever to qualify for the weekend here. But this was

him being told he was going to be given the first ever penalty shot

for slow play ever inflicted at the Masters. Graeme McDowell says what

sort of message are we trying to send out, given a 14-year-old shot

penalty? It was a six-hour round for everybody, why single him out?

Reaction to that, because he was warned several times before. Yeah,

this is a crazy situation, as Peter and I were talking about before.

How can you single anyone out? That's why the whole slow play rule

situation needs to be modified. I have never been a fan of timing.

The officials have to make the players get around quicker. And

really enforce things. He is here for the weekend, Peter. That's a

good thing. The problem with the ruling is you have to keep in

position. If they're going slow and you are going slow, you are not out

of position. They don't want to be putting time on the young fella.

Everybody is slow. So everybody should be penalised. When Tiger

Woods was asked, he said rules are rules. Now he is on the receiving

end of it. All right, now Bubba Watson was first out this morning.

He is out with a marker this morning. Birdie one, two, and now

three. He is on the charge and moves to one over. Don't forget,
