Day Three Golf: The Masters

Mum -- it is a fairy-tale that comes to life every year at the

perfect time. This is the place I want to play golf. The dark green

of the golf course, the yellow of the flag. It is like going into the

Garden of Eden. If I had to play one golf course for the rest of my

life, it would be the Augusta National. It is like a huge family

gathering together in one place every year. It is coming out of

winter and looking at nature. Everybody likes spring time. It is

the feeling and the thoughts that the players have come to Augusta

have about fairways, the greens, the club house, that is what makes

Augusta what it is. This is the Masters. Good evening to you. It is

a special place all right. Welcome to the annual rite of spring that

is the Masters Tournament. So much about this place never changes you

upon year and yet it never upon year and yet it never

disappoints as. The overnight leaderboard was not disappointing

either. 25-year-old Australian Jason day was out in front. It was

his day yesterday, but will it be his weekend? Or could Fred Couples

steal the limelight 30 years after his first appearance? Tiger Woods

at 3-under, but 3-under is not where Tiger will start today

because the peace and tranquillity this morning was punctured with a

breaking story about the world number one golfer. It stemmed from

this incident. This was his third shot. It was a stunning effort. It

spun back and into the pond. Tiger Woods's Guede up his options before

the next shot. He didn't fancy his dropped shot. He dropped another

ball two yards behind the original divot. This is the drop. This is

where the controversy start. It is the positioning of the drop that is

the area of contention. Typical Tiger Woods. With everything

spinning around him, what a superb recovery shot he played. This was

truly remarkable. Directly on line. He would make that part -- putt to

drop only one shot. After words he explained. I looked over the drop

area. It was a tough shot. I went several yards further back. Am rule

26 states, in effect, you must play you're drop ball from as close to

the position as the original ball as you possibly can. Apparently

this incident was reviewed before he signed his score card. He was

not present at that reviewed and it was deemed he had not done anything

wrong. This morning, everything was spinning. There were huge rumours

going around that he would be disqualified. Instead, at 9:45am,

he was given a two-shot penalty for transgressing the rules. This is

why. Another rule had been used. This relates to violations which

only come to light because of television evidence. They give

officials the right to dock strokes retrospectively rather than kick

players out of an event altogether. We have been down go to look at

where this happened and how it transpired. We have find the spot.

This is were the first ball was. He kept the lovely wedge shot Bridge

ended up into the water. He had the option of going to the drop zone

over there. It is a horrible spot. His other option is to take the

point where it last crossed the margin and take it back however far

he likes. Here is the other divot. He decided to go back a couple of

yards and drop his ball. Then he played the most delightful little

bit shot. He laid it absolutely stone dead. This morning, Tiger

Woods was summoned to the club house. The chairman of the

competition committee tried to explain the situation and clarify

their decision. Based on his honest answers, I told Tiger Woods that in

light of that information, we felt he had violated Rule 26 and would

have to be penalised. I also told them, because we had initially made

that determination -- made the determination the previous day

after reviewing the at CBS video -- the ESPN and video that he had not

violated the role and we had elected to make that decision, had

not spoken to him, that other rule 33-seven, if there was ample will

not to impose the penalty of disqualification but impose a two-

shot penalty. This qualification -- this competition is about integrity.

John Smith from wherever would have got the same role. It is the right

ruling under these circumstances. Tiger Woods released a statement on

Twitter. He said he was unaware that he had violated any roles. He

was assessed at two-shot penalty. He says he understands and accepts

the penalty and respects the decision of the committee. It has

been a pretty tasty start to the day. I have two gentleman with me

who have been around for a long time in golf and had thought they

time in golf and had thought they had seen and heard it all. What was,

in your mind, Tiger's misdemeanour? What was wrong and what should he

have done? I think he got a couple of rolls muddled up. If you're

going to drop it where he did, you have to drop it as close as you can.

because the ball had crossed the margin of the hazard, he should

have dropped it on that line there. He got some roles muddled up. Which

is possible. He was definitely in the wrong, but what do we make of

the decision not to disqualify him but give him a two-shot penalty?

is a great talking point. It is rather like human rights and health

and safety. Some is OK and some other roles are rubbish. It will be

a talking point for a long time. He didn't gain any advantage out of it.

A lot of people are scratching their heads and and not just us.

it Faldo was asked -- Nick Faldo was asked if he should have

withdrawn from the event. If he really want for the integrity up of

this game to do something that we would all shake his hand, you were

shaken by the hands, there is nothing worse than when guys mutter

as they walk past you. People will say that a ticket on the chin. --

people will say that he took it on the 10th. You could take a body

blow instead. It -- in the big picture of our game, it would be

more or monumental if he took it on board and carried on and had a good

week. This matter has split opinion. Nick Faldo says he should have

withdrawn. He is a professional golfer. This is a fairly new rule.

It was for something you couldn't really see on television. -- it was

for something you could only really see on television. How damaging is

this for the sport? This is a very relevant and pertinent point to be

talking about. He is the world number one and is still in this

tournament. The rules are very complicated. Most of the people who

play golf have no idea of an interpretation of all the rules. It

just goes to sustain became and make people who don't care for the

game think it is even more fuddy- duddy. People get away with lots of

misdemeanours in snicker, for example. You're not supposed to get

away with any misdemeanours. It is almost trying to be too perfect.

Life is not like that. It is integrity we're talking about.

Let's see how this has fuelled Tiger Woods. This whole scenario

did not seem to derail his focus in the slightest. This is in the first

and this was his approach. An extra shot of adrenalin as a consequence

of this controversy. So he has picked up one of the shot that he

has been docked all ready. Full live coverage from our host

the developing stories and the tee shots until then. Andrew Cotter is

across everything for you. First to Bubba Watson. He raced are round.

This was the third. The 14-year-old from China, Tianlang Guan. Today,

he finished with a 77 for 9-over. He is guaranteed the prize for low

amateur. Tim Clark of South Africa has missed the cut in the last

three years. This was one of his birdies. He had his first bogey on

14, but another birdie on 16. Matthew Croucher -- Matt Kuchar got

it his bogey on the third. -- got his birdie on the third. Rory

McIlroy is one shot further back. McElroy is 3-under par. Another

move in the right direction has been made by Justin Rose. He has

birdied the third. He is 4-under par. So there is a green jacket to

be won and this is the current state of play as we get into the

thick of the third round today. Tim Clark is certainly making an impact

out there. He has catapulted himself up into contention. Matt

Kuchar also moving smoothly. Great to see Justin Rose up there. He was

well fancied to do good things here this weekend. Lee west ridge is

steady. Adam Scott is very much an underdog from the last few years.

Rickie Fowler had that terrible finish to his round yesterday.

Sergio Garcia will remain 1-under par. Tiger Woods has dropped a shot.

Very tricky hole, the 4th. He is back to bury he started today at 1-

under for the tournament. So let's Schwartzel would not be here today

-- Tiger Woods would not be here today and he has now levelled for

his round. He is off with the Spaniard. Justin Roses In the

Company of KJ Choi. He has had some very good finishes and the ears

challenging well. David Lynn is making a great debut. It has taken

him a lifetime to get here and he is out with Lee Westwood. Jason Day

is the overnight leader and he is out with Fred Couples. Fred is

double the age of Jason a -- Jason Day. He is 53 and is contending 30

years after his debut in the Masters. What today we have. That

is beautiful and the conditions are cool and calm, sort of, at least on

the course. What are you making of the way the course is set up for

today? I think it is in pretty good shape. The Augusta National will be

delighted. The greens are yielding and they are wonderful putting

surface. The wind has been Swan Inn all week but the temperature is

near perfect. -- swirling. Here is Tiger at the 5th. The pin is back

right today, it is always awkward to get out. It does make such as

huge difference when you come to the same venue every year. Some of

the places they put the flags are bordering on being rather silly and

it could tip but it is going to stop there. The flight, for poll,

when you stand on the tee you were wondering if it is actually on the

green. Tiger will be trailing a huge

gallery with him today. The great tunes will be following them.

don't think he cares won the toss about what people think. I think he

as a bullet proof skin. What goes on in his head nobody knows but him

but the way he stepped out and he got a three at the first hole and

he missed a little part there and I think he has almost impervious to

rulings. Tiger was the victim of one yesterday and this young man

Tianlang Guan has made history as the youngest-ever player to play

and he made the cut and only just squeezed into the field after

making another piece of history, the only player ever to be given a

one-shot penalty for snow -- slow play. This is what Graeme McDowell

tweeted. It is a. I have heard very many times. Absolutely right. I

don't think the boy should have been penalised. It is all the

others. They have this strange rule that if you keep your position

everything in the garden is a cake. They are one hour and 20 minutes

longer than they should be so it is like going round the and 25, if

somebody wants to change at the speed, then why are they doing it

so slowly and nobody ever goes out and times the first half dozen

Couples in the field and that is where the slowness starts and that

looking at Ernie Els here and he has missed out on a green jacket on

Westwood. This is his putt at the third. He is looking to be putting

very soundly at the moment. That is his keep. He drives the ball well

and he is a wonderful player. If he putts he will be right there in it.

This is not what by brilliance, it is won by a steady and relentlessly

good play. This is his 60th Major. He turns 40 sooner. He has moved to

Florida in order to try and facilitate a move into Major

championships -- Major championships stardom, how do you

rate his progress so far? Good players, they have got to play well

and holed putts. So far he has hardly held any putts. He has not

put a few of the long ones in. We are waiting for that to happen. He

is a majestic ball striker but there have been many over the years

who have never won a Major or have only won one. But I like watching

him play and we have a number of good players this year.

This is Jason Day, Our Leader. He is a good Aussie man. It is a big

day for him. He tied for second two years ago with Adam Scott and he

was really excited about that and I spoke to him then about being up

here at the top of Augusta and I asked him if he was disappointed

and he said, no, I will be here plenty more times and I will have

more chances, which he has got this week. This is an interesting

pairing, Jason Day is an exciting young powerful player and Fred

Couples have this languid rhythm. He knows his way round here like

the way others. It is marvellous to see. He and Bernhard Langer are

going to be in a very big tussle for the over 50 prize. Bernhard

Langer is up to 3-under par at the moment. Despite all his problems

with his lower back his wing has not changed. He makes it look so

very, very easy. Just four days' walking around this hilly Augusta

National might take its toll on Fred Couples but so far, so good.

Lee Westwood, tee-shot at the 4th. They have just found the green with

the pin position over there on the right. The greens have farmed up

today. They camp not have put anything on them overnight.

other at the moment. It was a little challenging yesterday. That

is long of the second green. Jim Furyk, a shot of about 50 yards. It

is really an amazingly designed green, this a second. If you decide

it like that today they would just laugh at you, I think. It has got a

lot of character. Here, at the 5th, Tiger Woods. You can see the brown

patches that will dry out. The forecast for tomorrow has much of

the same. A bid for weekend and no wonder if this man will rampaged

through the field with a sense of here. Right on line. Apart from

that shop hit in the flag and setting him back at the 13th which

caused all the problems he had looked to be totally in control of

his game. When that happened at 15 it looked as though it might kick

on to 6-under par or 7-under par. think he needs to subscribe to the

US G8 and get a rule book. It is the second but dropping as taken

this year. He did one in Abu Dhabi where he was penalised. There is

leader. He had some injury problems in his young career, Jason Day. He

shot 64 in his second round two years ago and got second. He had to

pull out last year after the first round with an injured ankle. Run up

in the US Open in 2011 as well. A opening hole. It is uphill. It

flattens out in the last eight feet. A pretty good touch. It is always

important to get a good feel on the first and second green so it set a

good turn for the rest of the day finished 6th, 15th and 12th in the

Masters, an astonishing record. You get a better idea there of the

slope from the overhead camera. It with Lady -- I played with Freddie

in 1990 and it was unbelievable. The crowd was so forth ready it was

as though we did not exist. Jason will find a bit of that out there

today it will be a very proof-read the crowd. Who had the last laugh

of this third round! And let us go to the 18th. Tim Clarke is making a

can't quite do it. That is a marker against showing what can be done.

tricky one on the 4th. You see the pin tucked away in a nook and

So much expected from Keegan Bradley, but 11-over after 16 holes.

Some pretty high numbers from quite respected players? This is a

fantastic golf course. If you play well, you will reap the benefits.

But you have to be very guarded when you go after the flags. This

is not a golf course you can chase. You have to get the correct angles.

Tiger Woods is surveying the scene before his putt on the 4th. Let's

than that, I was playing well. I had to play good today. I have to

come out tomorrow and play a solid round. What sort of scores are out

there today four players at the top of the leaderboard Cammack in if

you're hitting the ball well and striking it well and making a few

putts, it is scorer ball. -- it is doable. Anything in the High 60s is

possible. What was it like going around the course without a playing

partner in competition? My marker is from the same university as me.

I have known him for 12 years. It was fun to spend time with him.

230 yards to a very narrow putting surface. You have to decide if

there is a lay up. The player is thinking, my heart says I should go

for it. Perhaps the caddy is thinking otherwise. You it goes.

What do you think? Not too sure. This might be an interesting

decision to make with the breeze. We are 2-under par and perhaps you

should play safe. I think I can get there with a 5-wood. It could be a

silly mistake because if you knock it down the left side you get a

good angle for the flag. It is tricky. What are you going to try

and do? Call for it or lay up? Perhaps you should take the prudent

putt to come on the 11th. Birdie attempt now for McElroy on the

last year with a triple in the settles. He has been struggling

with his rhythm this year. This Cup and all of that cash last

season. This is for poll on nine. - - par. After a fantastic tee shot,

only a wedge second. This is why, it is one reason why the game takes

Ken Brown has been out to check out this green himself. The question

that is always asked of me is how fast are the greens at the Augusta

National? It is like asking if Norfolk his flat. You have to

practice so hard on getting your touch on these greens. Let's try to

get five moving at once. The green is as smooth as a billiard table.

Down at the golf. That was too soft. They are all running quite nicely

like little soldiers down the green. Lovely pace. They are colliding one.

I only hit those as will that was eight for it. Slight misjudgment

and there is a big difference. You have to have a perfect touched on

greens like this. Here is Fred Couples. 5-under. You can just see

the flag over on the corner. It is a flat spot and it has skidded over.

You need a touch of good fortune on this course. That is how you drop a

shot. Always activity a round the club house year. People trying to

Not too bad. If he had missed the bunker, it would have ended up in

full swing. Just that it. -- just zipped it. This is the hardest hole

on the course. An absolute brute. The caddy has been told to keep the

flag away from the hole. Speed is so important. Actually, that is not

too bad. I don't envy Ernie Els or Fred Couples with their shots from

over the bunker by inches. Marc Leishman plays that quite well out

of the sand. Watch Fred Couples. Miles left, a slider to the right.

Other people have taken three or more to get out of this position.

That is pretty good. Couples in his the green in three. Am he has done

very well. Very well. I thought he had got that. Angel Cabrera. That

was for a birdie. Never going to going. Jason Day for par. Fearless.

Nice start. Four pars. Tiger with the chance for birdie. 0! That is

the most amazing what the look I have ever seen. -- no! The gods of

golfing are displeased with him. I would like to see that again. I

have never seen one look Philip so slowly. Expensive mess. -- miss.

This is from the right. Speed is so centre. Another hole safely

5th. Coaxing it down. Things just slipping away from him. It is that

sort of course. You don't have to do much wrong. Lee Westwood. A

delicate little shot. He has to flirt with the top of the green.

And will it stay to the right? Not enough pace. Going backwards now.

room to land. It has gone the other way. This hole is a devilish

difficult. You think you have played a nice shot and then it gets

further and further away. Westwood dropped a stroke at the 7th

yesterday. Matt Kuchar has a difficult shot. Very tricky. He has

shaped that well. If that rolled another yard, at it could end up in

shot. It is possible to get the way. Not too much spin. Uphill putt

from there is possible. That would take him back to level par for the

moon. Condoleezza Rice could have sorted it out in 10 minutes, I

could be the most difficult shot. This is going to be very

not sure about that one. I think he meant to carry it another yard or
