Day Four Golf: The Masters

It has always been the best players in the world that have done best.

It is the dream of any kid who has ever played the sport to put on

that Green jacket. There it is. A win for the 80s. -- for the ages.

Have you ever seen anything like that. You have to be a complete

player to win at the Masters. is the way that champions do it.

What a man. Fantastic stuff. It is beyond anything you could ever

imagine or respect. What a shot! Look at that. I have never had a

dream goal this well. It feels awesome. Very fine. He collects the

green jacket. There is something about putting the green jacket on.

This is the Masters. Hello. The final day of the Masters

tournament. We look forward to this every year. Playing for the right

to ever be associated with this place, the Augusta National. One of

the most iconic venues in sport. To do that, jacket is required. As we

saw yesterday, this place is also a terrible beauty. You must tread

terrible beauty. You must tread very carefully around here. Tiger

Woods preparation had been more administration. Playing off a plus

two handicap and trying to claw back ground, he did. To the world

number one is at hand. The world number two was cut adrift. Once

more, are Augusta had a savage round waiting for Rory McIlroy. The

movement on that leaderboard. Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano of Spain

has picked up one shot. You may remember Brandt Snedeker came close

to winning the Open at Lytham last year. Good Jason Day are Marc

Leishman finally break their nation's duck at Augusta? Or Adam

Scott? The British challenge largely failed to fire yesterday.

Lee Westwood is five shots adrift. So is Bernhard Langer. Seven shots

separated the top 22 players as we got going this morning. The winner

of the green jacket has come from as far back as eight shots on the

final day in the past. It is a big ask, but it has been done. Rory

McIlroy is on plus four. Keegan Bradley was first out this morning.

much cooler today. A slight breeze and some rain coming through. We

think it is unlikely to affect play. Everyone is warming up on the range.

The final pairing will not be around for another hour and one

quarter. Tiger Woods is warming up for his tee time in half an hour.

Someone asked what I thought he would score. I thought 83 would be

good. Cry wouldn't be surprised with 90. This golf course is a

master. The strangest things happen on this golf course. Tiger Woods

was telling me that he is hitting woods to all these holes and he

played them 2-under. It is remarkable. 14 years of age. I

think it is the greatest things I have ever seen in golf is Tiger

Woods winning the Grand Slam at 24. This comes close. He is the

youngest player ever to make the cut. Wonderful scenes. We have had

a lot of reaction about the penalty that was meted out to him for slow

play. Firstly, he was playing slowly. We have to be consistent.

This is what upsets me. If you watch golf throughout the year,

hundreds or thousands have been away over there allotted time. Why

would a young man like this be penalised? All is well that ends

well. It just shows you the difference between Asia and the

West. This young man handled it like a mature man of 40. When I was

14, I would have cried like a baby. I take my hat off to him. I think

we all do. That is the amateur title all sorted out. It is the

green jacket we have to talk about. Peter, it is a very intriguing

leaderboard today. What are your thoughts on the prospects of who

might win and what we might see on such a cool and over cast day?

There are some good runners out there. Tiger Woods is on the

handful of shots behind. It all depends on who has that good

fortune and plays that magical shot. Perhaps someone else has some bad

luck at the wrong moment. It has all happened year before. -- here.

I think Adam Scott might do well and ease the pain of his terrible

mistake at Lytham St Anne's. Firstly we will talk about the

Argentine who has in -- who is in contention to be one of a small

number of men who have won the Masters more than once. He won it

the main tour's since his Masters title in 2009. He won the Argentine

Open in December, however. Is his lack of experience of being in

contention over the last few years going to hinder him? A I don't

think so. He has won here and in Argentina. He is playing well. I

don't think it will hinder him, it could help him. He is a beautiful

ball striker. Would you make of the way his swing has hardly changed

over the years? -- what do you make. He is a wonderful man. Golf Hammers

you if you make predictions. I think if he is really in contention,

having not played for so long, his nerve will be the downfall of his

game. His swing will be perfect, but his nerve is not great. It will

day. Some people I have spoken to this morning and yesterday are

saying that the think this fell is the best player in the world,

despite his injury. People talk about his magical putting. It is

very short and quick. That is fine when it works. In my opinion, you

only have to get slightly nervous and then there is a problem. It is

all about timing. He is capable of doing it, that is obvious. At times,

I think these greens are unfair. You play a decent shot to a green

and it ends up down there for no reason at all. There is almost no

grain on them. The ball wanders on its own at volition here, there and

everywhere. To me, that is not quite golf. But that is the way it

has progressed over the last 15 years. The only protection they

have here is the speed of the pens and where they put the flag. It

makes some players look silly. know Justin Rose was unhappy at the

way he was putting yesterday. He has a nagging back injury. He came

home with a 75 yesterday. Let's hope that the world number three

can manage something of a charge here. A lot was expected of Rory

McIlroy. This is him at the 16th. That caused all sorts of

difficulties yesterday. Very difficult to get to the pin

position on at the third day. That is better from Rory McIlroy. Am it

is beginning to warm up out there on the course. You would imagine

there could be a chance for a hole in one today. What about the

Australians? Can the at last break their duck? They have come so close

in the past. Most notably with Greg Norman three times. Especially in

and 1996. I want to win the Masters. Nick Faldo has done it. I know why

screwed-up today. It is not the end and the works -- the end of the

world for me today. There was emotion out there. I am

disappointed. I'm sad about it. I will regret it and you will be a

day that I know I let it slip away. I would not like to see a player do

last year, he is a sentimental favourite. Personally, I like them

all, they are all fantastic people, so I don't care who wins. Adam Scott

said he had something of a check on his guts after throwing The Open

away, I'm sure Australia will be watching. A green jacket, that is

like green and gold. I was out on the practice ground

watching Adam Scott, he looked absolutely stunning, he was holding

them from all different distances, he uses his long putter comedy rocks

back and forwards, he looks very comfortable. -- he rocks backs and

forwards. It has a lovely role of the putter face. He looks to me as

if he is the man to beat, it depends how the magic one and works for him.

Whilst it is never an advantage not to be leading a championship like

this, do you feel it might be an advantage that he will have to come

from behind, and do a better, rather than dwelling in his mind like he

had to do at Lytham? I think if you believe in karma, Adam deserves to

win a major, he has a magnificent swing. I don't know the other

Aussie's game at all. This tournament is so wide open, anyone

within seven shots has a great chance. Let's not forget Bernhard

Langer, at his age, to do what he has done, that is remarkable, he has

been unbelievable. I heard him talking, he said he wasn't trying to

make the cut, he was going to try and win it, that was his positive

attitude. This is Tiger Woods, never in all of his 14 Major titles, has

he come from behind to overtake a leader and win it. That is a curious

that, but we have talked about it for a long time. Do you feel like he

is in position to do it this time? It is wonderful, to hear all of the

stats, God knows where they find them. Who gives a damn, he has never

won from behind, because he is always upfront! He has never been in

that position. Save your breath. I will save it. I need to ask Gary,

what do you feel about the way he is playing, and that controversy over

the two shot penalty? Would it be tainted if he won it? Not in my eyes

would be tainted whatsoever. We are so anti-authority, Nether excepting

matters as they are, you have a committee, it is irrelevant what we

think, you have a committee, they make their decision, and you abide

by it. We play cricket in our countries, when the umpire says

you're out, you out. I think he has a great chance of winning. I agree

with Peter, doesn't mean anything about having not from behind. He is

ready to win. He is so keyed up, so focused, more so than any golfer I

have ever seen and he knows this course, course management is so

vital on this one. Nevin was shot to play at the right time, to take a

bogey if you need it. controversy and the confusion

yesterday morning, that Wayne, in terms of the way he is driving the

ball, the way he has performed, his recent requests with the putter, he

seems to be back. He doesn't have the shots that are used to have in

the last decade, he could hit any shot, now he has a technique where

he is trying to block out the left-hand side of the golf course,

and hit a controlled slider. The thing he has been doing better this

year is his putting, he's making more than in the last few years. He

is going to be harder to task. talk about the British challenge,

there was so much anticipation, and excitement. We had number two,

three, and four in the world. Lee Westwood is the leading Briton at

this point, he is just starting, five shots behind. A very good

chance of winning. He is the modern-day Greg Norman. What does

his attitude have to be like today? There is nothing wrong with

attitude, it is his chipping and bunker shots. No one has played

better than him in the last five years from green to T, or tee to

green. It is his chipping and bunker shots which have let him down.

player to do that, what was your attitude, was it almost liberating

to be able to go out and have a go at the course? I won at least 20

tournaments in my life from six shots behind, so I always believed,

you have to believe in yourself, no one else is going to do it, I went

into a trance, it is a difficult thing, and I worked on my mind for

so many years, because you come down the last nine holes, it is the mind

which takes over, you haven't even scratched the potential of a human

being's mind. What was the balance in 1990 that you had to strike

between aggression and caution, particularly on a course like this?

This is a very precise course, as far as me, and what I used to do, I

wasn't that good, I was lucky a couple of times, I could play all

right, but these guys out there, they have to be exact and precise. I

know Peter hates this thing, but they have to do it one shot at a

time, not get ahead of themselves. It is a difficult thing to do.

Something positions are the traditional ones, it is always nice

to get out there and see what it is like out there. Ken Brown is darting

around, showing you all parts of the course as normal.

There is nothing like being down at 15 and 16 on the weekend. If you are

in the lead, the crowd is cheering, you can see the leaderboard. The

world of television is watching you, what an atmosphere. The patrons will

be looking out over you, in your heart you think, is it my turn to

win the title? You have made it down here in two shots, this is the most

atmospheric place in the world. Look at this site, there is nothing like

it. The array of people, all the different colours, a magical spot.

You are nervous, the heart is pounding, are you going to button up

the green jacket? I'll tell you who is -- whose heart is pounding, Luke

Donald. He has had some wonderful years, look at that, coming back,

that shows you the speed of it. Could it? Oh, my goodness! That is

what we love about Augusta. He gives a wry smile. Justin Rose, Heery is

at the fourth, this has been playing extremely difficult all week.

about how long this hole is? It has been designed that way now. Justin

Rose, promised so much, and there was a latter day that is heaped on

his shoulders, he has got so close to majors, it doesn't look like it

a good start here it is really important. If you miss that green,

thoughts on the tournament? I was pleased with the first two rounds.

Not so pleasing with the third round. What is it like on the 4th

day? The wind is not as severe today. There is very little wind

today. It is quite damp in the morning. Balls are reacting quite

well to chip shots and things. -- chip shots. What sort of score is

out there for the top players? 16th, it is possible to get a

birdie. On the 15th, the big boys can get and 9-iron out. I think

there will be a flurry of birdies in the last six holes. That is

where it all happens. Bernhard Langer. He has had a good old tough

old -- competition with Fred Couples. 3-under par. Tied for 7th

at the moment. He couldn't, could she? -- he? Jose Maria is not very

biggest of long hitters. That was so close to the water. Brandt

Snedeker will still some golf balls. He is off to the short game area to

don't feel like I played that differently from yesterday, but the

score is ten shots lower. That is this golf course, if you get on the

wrong side of it, it can hurt you. I am pleased with the way I played

today. Even though it wasn't my best tournament, it was a nice round to

finish with, something I can go one with for the rest of this season.

There was a lot of chat about you needing to play a lot, is that still

the case? I feel like I have played enough, I am getting back my best.

Yesterday was very disappointing, and it me out of the tournament, if

I had kept that under control I may have had a chance going into today.

dry, it would have grabbed a little quicker. Today, this is awkward.

Pretty well judged. I thought yesterday when he finished his

round, with those last two bogeys, he might have been a bit nervous,

but nothing so far. That does not work for Scott. That will go past.

Woods, carving one up the seventh, trying to get it to land softly, as

only he can. That was so nearly perfect. He liked that one. Bernhard

Langer, he had some very good putts early on. The players struggling to

adjust themselves to the wet greens. they are not going. He could easily

be, had his putter been working, three shots better. The course

starts to play a bit longer in the rain, the ball does not go as far,

nine on Sunday, all sorts of things can happen. Let's see if Jose Maria

some opportunities on the back nine. As we have seen on Sunday at
