Day 4 - Highlights Golf: The Open

a place reserved unquiet that is open now and again to the world, and

there is a club most exclusive and proud, were to enter, you have to be

one of the greats. The club is small but the names are legends. They are

those who have won the championship at Muirfield. So who now can win?

Who will come through the challenge played on by one of the world's

finest courses in the greatest championship of them all? Who,

like they have all got together and said, he has been coming here for a

few years, he's getting on a bit now, let's help him. Hopefully just

three. Three dropped shots in a row. And Adam Scott is near enough done

last couple of holes, but they need to happen now. Nicely done. Three

victory, but victory it surely is. Westwood is giving it everything he

has got to try and reach the 17th green with the driver, a nice little

up slope. Oh, no. It looks good. Now, that is a grandstand finish.

72. Well, well, well. Can you follow Scott? Could be. Though, it just

turn. That was a good effort, Tiger. -- just turned. Three birdies. Six

That is a very nice touch, Tiger and us fantastic entertainment, and

finished joint third, with Ian Poulter and Adam Scott. It is surely

going to be his turn some time in a major. You could say that, but as

the years tiptoe by, but he would be a worthy winner. Commiserations,

Lee. The result was in doubt until the last 45 minutes. You made such a

positive start to the final round. did not lay that badly. It came

unstuck around seven, eight and nine. I went for a flyer at eight

and a pub into a trap, then I got lucky with a live on my second shot

and that plugged into a lie, so that is one of the defences of this golf

course. Phil Mickelson played really well. I did not see any of it, but

5-under par was as good a round of golf as I can remember. We spoke

about the efforts he has made to learn how to cope with links golf.

He has done it very well. He is such a marvellous pupil, and he has

finally discovered how to putt on a links course consistently well.

he drove so well, he has learned that the ball has run for miles and

miles, and he just scored lower than anyone else, and that is all that

you have to do to be a champion. those critical putts on the closing

remember for my entire life stock of the best rounds of golf that I have

played. And to be here with Amy and my children, to be able to share it

with my main man, Bones, Steve Lloyd, it makes this moment even

more special and I could not you more proud to be your champion. This

is a victory that I never knew that I would have the shots for, the

opportunity to win this tournament, here, and to do it, to play some of

the best golf, probably the best round of my career, and breakthrough

and capture this claret jug is some of the most fulfilling, probably the

most fulfilling moment of my career, because it is something I was not

sure that I would be able to do, and I want to thank everyone for the

opportunity and for the support, and for supporting this great

tournament, and I am very proud to be your touch -- champion. Thank

you. One man finished under par, and that was Phil Mickelson. And that

was a charge and a half coming from golf. He just surged through the

field. And the par at sifting, the birdie at 17, that second shot was

beautiful, and then the last, it really was a fantastic round and he

deserves to win. 20 years trying to win this, he has got three of the

four Majors, but it was a good championship from a British

perspective, Lee Westwood Kim home with 4-over par today. Where did it

start to unravel for him? At the third, he played a very bad tee

shot. He was lucky to get away with five. From there on, it was four the

shots and not too much going in and he just did not play a very good

round of golf. He will know why, he will try to work out what happened,

and there was no doubt he will be very disappointed, but he will want

to know why he was hitting bad shots, why he did not feel right,

why he did not hole certain parts. -- putts. Certainly, he will be

looking at that but it was just not his day. Henrik Stenson in second

place, and in the tie for third place, Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter,

with another electrifying run where he had an eagle and three

consecutive birdies. He was totally in the zone. All you could see was

the fairway and the cup. He played some lovely shots, he was unlucky.

He played with the driver on the fifth team, and it just caught the

left edge, and he would have had an 30 yard shot down wind that would

have did him a birdie chance. It was so close. He will have had a great

day, a brilliant round. He was just a couple of shots too far back,

starting the day. It was one of the great open Championships. And it was
