ROCK MUSIC whether he wants to be or not, he's here for the weekend.

:00:48.:01:20.

it's brilliant. I say, we are warming up for a super weekend here.

:01:21.:01:29.

The third day of the Open Championship is already a dramatic

:01:30.:01:36.

one. What a contrast to the first half of the championship, the rain

:01:37.:01:39.

is pounding down and thunderstorms might not be too far away. We are

:01:40.:01:45.

told it will continue to be continuously heavy rain with periods

:01:46.:01:50.

of horrendously heavy downpours. That's it in a nutshell. It will be

:01:51.:01:56.

a slow and challenging day for the players at Hoylake today. Perhaps

:01:57.:02:01.

moving day should be renamed up evil day because for the first time in

:02:02.:02:06.

the 154 year history of the championship the R and A have

:02:07.:02:11.

decided to employ a two T start. The players will be starting at the

:02:12.:02:20.

first and 10th tees this morning. Unusual times call for an usual

:02:21.:02:27.

measures. How will all of this affects the concentration of runaway

:02:28.:02:30.

leader, Rory McIlroy? He won't want anything to disturb his momentum.

:02:31.:02:36.

Two-time major winner and already four shots in front. He's not tell

:02:37.:02:41.

the half-time lead at a major event since the US open in 2011 when he

:02:42.:02:46.

beat the field by eight shots. A formidable posse chasing him down.

:02:47.:03:13.

Rory getting ready for his tee time just after 11 o'clock. Yesterday it

:03:14.:03:22.

was a decisive move four aright the top to banish memories of

:03:23.:03:28.

forgettable Fridays in the past. The eyes of the golfing world watching,

:03:29.:03:32.

he's had some bad scores in the second round. And they keep

:03:33.:03:36.

reminding him. There's something about Friday. Making hard, hard work

:03:37.:03:48.

of it. Rory in trouble. He's settled down, I think. Well done, Rory.

:03:49.:03:58.

Lovely. That was incredibly good. He gets that putter rolling, when he

:03:59.:04:01.

hits the ball, watch out everybody else. He looks completely in

:04:02.:04:08.

control, relaxed, and we hope we see good numbers. Brilliant shot. Top

:04:09.:04:18.

quality. Can he do it? Of course he can do it. Beautiful. Absolutely

:04:19.:04:28.

fantastic. The Friday Demons are being laid to rest today. Genius.

:04:29.:04:36.

Going out there, I wanted to focus on myself and stick to my game plan

:04:37.:04:42.

and I did that quite well after a shaky start with a bogey at the 1st.

:04:43.:04:46.

After that I settled into the round nicely and played really well. You

:04:47.:04:50.

dealt with Friday, tricky wind, it looks like rain will be the

:04:51.:04:55.

challenge on Saturday but you are up for it? Definitely. Depending on

:04:56.:05:02.

what whether we get, yeah, I'm looking forward to it. I've been in

:05:03.:05:06.

this position before. I've enjoyed it. I will try to enjoy this weekend

:05:07.:05:12.

as well. He would certainly love to get his hands on this claret jug by

:05:13.:05:15.

tomorrow night. Nick Faldo knew there was whether coming. This is

:05:16.:05:24.

unusual, good decision? Unbelievable. We were saying, what

:05:25.:05:33.

happened to the days when it was coming in sideways. There was the

:05:34.:05:37.

famous day in 2002 when the temperatures dropped. This is pretty

:05:38.:05:48.

unprecedented. Really serious stuff. We don't want to mess with lightning

:05:49.:05:54.

or anything so if you can get the round in, and it messes with

:05:55.:05:58.

television, of course, especially American television, but the most

:05:59.:06:00.

important thing is to get the players round and get the third

:06:01.:06:04.

round in the box. Does it matter to the players which tee you go from?

:06:05.:06:10.

It can change your rhythm. Going up to the 10th hole, it's an extra ten

:06:11.:06:15.

or 15 minutes negotiating your way through the crowd. You cite yourself

:06:16.:06:20.

up. The 1st hole here is one of the hardest open holes on the rotor. But

:06:21.:06:29.

these guys have done it before. Every one of the three Majors have

:06:30.:06:34.

done this two tee start at some stage but this is the first time for

:06:35.:06:38.

the Open Championship. Golf began from 9am from both of those tees. We

:06:39.:06:46.

will be going live in about 15 minutes time. Paul Casey with an

:06:47.:06:50.

eagle at ten. There are birdies and eagles to be had out there today.

:06:51.:06:54.

Good weather for ducks and Paul Casey so far. From Rory's

:06:55.:07:00.

perspective, it equalises the field and they will all have to tackle the

:07:01.:07:07.

same weather. It helps that he's teeing off at 11am. Part of the

:07:08.:07:11.

tradition is the reader going out at 3pm. That is part of the mind game

:07:12.:07:15.

of the Open Championship. -- the leader going out. In that way it

:07:16.:07:24.

helps to get up and get on with it. I think the weather is more of a

:07:25.:07:28.

nuisance than a real difficulty factor. It will change things quite

:07:29.:07:33.

considerably, it dampens the fairway meaning everybody is laying up short

:07:34.:07:37.

of the bunkers. You have to do recalculate. You need more club for

:07:38.:07:41.

that. You have the chance to get closer and stop easier. I think the

:07:42.:07:46.

greens were easier to read this week. I think the guys, if they stay

:07:47.:07:54.

aggressive, they will be fine. I would still predict the score to be

:07:55.:07:58.

pretty good. It will not help the rest of the field. Remember when it

:07:59.:08:03.

rained at Wentworth, Rory took off. We talk about him struggling in firm

:08:04.:08:07.

and fast conditions sometimes but we don't have that today. And the

:08:08.:08:11.

course will soften up with more rain. The problem about being and on

:08:12.:08:18.

course expert is that you have to be an on course expert in good and bad

:08:19.:08:22.

weather and Ken Brown has found that out today. Third day of the Open

:08:23.:08:26.

Championship and the weather is awful. A big day for the players and

:08:27.:08:31.

caddies who have to keep the clubs dry. They will have their dry

:08:32.:08:36.

gloves, the hugs and a towel or two. The caddies will be vital today. You

:08:37.:08:45.

have to keep your hands dry, particularly the grits. If the grips

:08:46.:08:48.

get wet the clubs will twist and then you're in trouble. Sun drying

:08:49.:08:58.

towels in the bag. One hung under the umbrella. Somehow or other you

:08:59.:09:03.

have to keep those hands and grips dry. A glove, these are vital. If

:09:04.:09:11.

have to keep those hands and grips you can keep this glove dry, and

:09:12.:09:16.

Phil Mickelson has special gloves, some players might have gloves on

:09:17.:09:21.

both hands. The grits must be dry, the gloves, and the umbrellas. --

:09:22.:09:26.

the grip 's. The caddy will be just as important as the players today.

:09:27.:09:33.

Our trusty floor manager will be accompanying him all day with that

:09:34.:09:37.

umbrella. Play got underway at 9am. Half of the field will in effect be

:09:38.:09:46.

playing the course back to front. We have groups of three as well.

:09:47.:10:01.

Marc Warren has enjoyed a cracking couple of weeks of links golf so

:10:02.:10:12.

far. George Coetzee defied the elements on the so-called wrong side

:10:13.:10:16.

of the draw yesterday to climb the leaderboard on his birthday. Rickie

:10:17.:10:24.

Fowler memorably played well in wind and rain three years ago.

:10:25.:10:43.

It's not over by any means. A cracking statistic, only 17 times in

:10:44.:10:51.

the last 43 years as the halfway leader of the Open gone on to win

:10:52.:11:01.

it. We make a big deal about who is winning but it is a long way to go.

:11:02.:11:07.

If Rory plays really nicely, makes life difficult for everybody... But

:11:08.:11:11.

if he comes back a couple, slows down, a few guys can get a run in

:11:12.:11:17.

and it can tighten up. It is a very important day for Rory today. He got

:11:18.:11:21.

through a horrendous Friday pretty well. It was too important, when you

:11:22.:11:29.

are reading the Open, it is too important and it was all about

:11:30.:11:34.

concentration. He kept piling them on. If he comes out in the same

:11:35.:11:42.

vein... But a lot is going on. The caddies will be important. It is

:11:43.:11:47.

quite an art holding up the umbrella with the canopy. Your dripping,

:11:48.:12:00.

trying to keep your player dry. The players do not want to carry those

:12:01.:12:06.

things and it is difficult holding them in that position. It will be a

:12:07.:12:11.

new test. He came through a great test yesterday, Frank, and looking

:12:12.:12:15.

at some of the shots he played, obviously very relieved. He's been

:12:16.:12:19.

on the situation a couple of times where he's had an emphatic lead and

:12:20.:12:22.

when do you think the memories of those triumphs starts to kick in? An

:12:23.:12:30.

excellent question, Hazel. 36 hole leads have been often tight, but a

:12:31.:12:37.

four shot lead, those aren't often lost from. We are seeing a sense of

:12:38.:12:42.

freedom we have not seen in a while. He started to tighten up on Friday.

:12:43.:12:48.

This is the 12th time that he has had the lead at a stage in a major

:12:49.:12:53.

Championship. Only Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods have had more in the

:12:54.:13:05.

last few years. The closest situation you could relate to was

:13:06.:13:13.

when you were leading at Muirfield. Full everything looks good. Nick was

:13:14.:13:19.

in that situation at Muirfield and then it got extremely tiring. Having

:13:20.:13:26.

been in that situation before, having seen how he has handled his

:13:27.:13:32.

victory at the U.S. Open... The shot here was wonderful, a three quarters

:13:33.:13:39.

8-iron at 15, he doesn't always play that kind of shot with that freedom.

:13:40.:13:44.

When he plays well it's beautiful. You don't have to be... This is

:13:45.:13:57.

extraordinary, the driver and 17. That is not necessary, because if

:13:58.:14:05.

you go in the left rough, you are dead. You have no shot. You don't

:14:06.:14:10.

have to play super aggressive. Just be smart with the ball. Use your

:14:11.:14:14.

layups and plot your way round the course. It is a fair golf course. It

:14:15.:14:20.

will not get crazy, especially now the fire has been taken out of the

:14:21.:14:27.

bounce. This pitch was beautiful. That is feel and concentration and

:14:28.:14:30.

that is commitment. That is more important than almost the ability to

:14:31.:14:37.

play the shots. Now you have to keep that on situation all the time and

:14:38.:14:40.

believe you can scramble and get out of any situation. What is your

:14:41.:14:45.

assessment of how he will do today? I have got a scary thought this

:14:46.:14:50.

might be what we have seen before. If he can get off to a good start,

:14:51.:14:54.

he will be concerned most with Dustin Johnson, at Dustin is pretty

:14:55.:15:02.

good in West conditions -- wet conditions. I want to see Rory how

:15:03.:15:07.

he played before and go for it. Very few people can play that way and for

:15:08.:15:10.

us it is a pleasure to watch golf when it's played like that. He will

:15:11.:15:16.

not be outmuscled out there. He has Dustin Johnson beside him. How

:15:17.:15:23.

better equipped is he for a challenge in the last couple of days

:15:24.:15:31.

in a major now? He still has a couple of personality... Little

:15:32.:15:33.

moves with his wedges when he left the club up and dancers around, I'm

:15:34.:15:45.

not a fan of that. Whether you are playing, chasing, if Rory is in

:15:46.:15:49.

front, it might help. It will keep him in the running stop he won't

:15:50.:15:56.

think he is leading so it might help Dustin for a while. Technically,

:15:57.:16:00.

some of those wedge shots, I'm not a big fan. If it was more firm and

:16:01.:16:09.

dry, Georgia is where he got close. He can hit the ball low and is so

:16:10.:16:12.

powerful. It could also start to swing back more. Those 6-unders on a

:16:13.:16:21.

day like this, somebody could move up. We had news of the passing of

:16:22.:16:29.

Bob Torrance yesterday, is sad news. We will always remember him. One of

:16:30.:16:34.

the greatest coaches that Britain ever produced. The coached his son,

:16:35.:16:40.

Sam Times, Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley. -- Sam

:16:41.:16:46.

Torrence. Our great condolences go to his family. We will fondly

:16:47.:16:50.

remember this wonderful man. Let's get some reaction because

:16:51.:17:00.

there is a real sadness around the course today. His voice will live

:17:01.:17:09.

on. That is the great thing. I always passed Peter Jacobsen,

:17:10.:17:13.

whether it is yards today, we tried to do our best impression... "You're

:17:14.:17:19.

looking great, lad, your follow-through is looking great". I

:17:20.:17:26.

think his voice will live on. We will always remember that. You Scots

:17:27.:17:32.

get away with murder, you can yell at people and it still sounds great.

:17:33.:17:38.

I was lucky enough to work with Sam last week, and he was sewing me

:17:39.:17:41.

pictures of his father in the wheelchair. I spoke to him last

:17:42.:17:49.

night after I heard the news and his dad had done so much for him. He

:17:50.:17:55.

helped Paul McGinley, Harrington, Darren Clarke, and he helped to turn

:17:56.:18:00.

them into men as well. He picked the right week because this is the one

:18:01.:18:05.

Championship that he loved. I saw him last week on the range and it

:18:06.:18:10.

was the same. He would always tell me I did a great job! The game has

:18:11.:18:18.

suffered a loss. We can now go to live golf on the third day of this

:18:19.:18:21.

Open Championship and we look forward to what is to come

:18:22.:18:25.

regardless of the weather. World number one Adam Scott is about to

:18:26.:18:28.

make his assault from nine shots back today. Who knows what's in

:18:29.:18:35.

store today and we look forward to finding out in the company of Mark

:18:36.:18:41.

James and Peter Alliss. COMMENTATOR: We are looking forward to it. A lot

:18:42.:18:47.

has been made that of this moment because it is very soft but I think

:18:48.:18:51.

if you scratch the surface it will be dry as a bone a whisker down. Not

:18:52.:18:55.

much has been taken out of it so far but it is the psychological effect.

:18:56.:19:00.

And thunder and lightning might come in. I think if it stays like this,

:19:01.:19:06.

good scoring is on the cards. Do you agree, Mark? I do, as long as the

:19:07.:19:13.

really heavy rain stays away, Peter. It could get really heavy and

:19:14.:19:16.

difficult. But conditions are good right now. I love the tracking thing

:19:17.:19:22.

they have on the driving. It adds a new aspect to

:19:23.:19:25.

they have on the driving. It adds a television. It gives you an idea

:19:26.:19:33.

which direction they are going. Victor Dubuisson, the young

:19:34.:19:37.

Frenchman who played some sparkling golf in the last year

:19:38.:19:39.

Frenchman who played some sparkling in the Ryder Cup points, a virtual

:19:40.:19:44.

certainty for Gleneagles in September. I think he's almost a

:19:45.:19:57.

mystery man. He's very quiet. I don't mix in his company, but he

:19:58.:20:01.

seems to keep himself out of the way, plays his own game. As a bit of

:20:02.:20:12.

a haunted look about him. Not a big man but he hits it a long way. And a

:20:13.:20:14.

good short game. On the tee, from the USA, Jimmy Walker. APPLAUSE

:20:15.:20:24.

Jimmy Walker is a surprise as well. 458 yards. Not a breath of wind,

:20:25.:20:33.

iron off the tee. That's a good one. I find it

:20:34.:20:49.

fascinating That's a good one. I find it

:20:50.:20:55.

this being one of the most difficult opening drives in Championship golf

:20:56.:20:59.

but it's only been played twice from this in the history

:21:00.:21:02.

but it's only been played twice from Championship. How it's worked its

:21:03.:21:05.

way into being the most difficult hole, I would put it up against the

:21:06.:21:09.

first at Muirfield with someone and across or the first at Carnoustie. I

:21:10.:21:16.

don't think it's frighteningly difficult, particularly now they've

:21:17.:21:21.

moved the Green 30 or 40 yards back. Plenty of people here, that's the

:21:22.:21:28.

tented village. The patron's section is on the left, the sponsors have

:21:29.:21:34.

their marquees and where they serve lunch, watching players, the 18th.

:21:35.:21:41.

We have burger vans, a media tent. That's across the third fairway. It

:21:42.:21:49.

is a colossal operation. Setting all these things up, taking them all

:21:50.:22:04.

down. Molinari, the back view of one of the Molinaris. It is a little bit

:22:05.:22:09.

humid. But not unpleasant at the moment. Maybe we will be lucky and

:22:10.:22:16.

miss all the weather. Jason Dufner, no mistaking that figure... At least

:22:17.:22:19.

I hope it is now I've said that. This par-3 was pretty tough

:22:20.:22:38.

yesterday with crosswind but today there is virtually no wind. Just a

:22:39.:22:43.

good solid strike, land it somewhere on the surface. Or close to the

:22:44.:22:52.

surface. Did pretty well. Another two yards and it would have bounded.

:22:53.:22:57.

Short and it would have been in the bunker. Back to the first and Jimmy

:22:58.:23:02.

Walker. The jacket is for ready. I don't know where he's been hiding

:23:03.:23:06.

for about ten years. I know where he's hiding now, deep in that

:23:07.:23:12.

bunker. Jimmy has suddenly appeared, he won three tournaments

:23:13.:23:16.

early in the year in wonderful style, and you think, where have you

:23:17.:23:20.

been? Have you been the pro at a local driving range or something?

:23:21.:23:36.

Mickelson, well gloved up. The first match of the 10th tee, Bradley,

:23:37.:23:48.

Dufner and Mickelson. You can see how much rain there has been when we

:23:49.:23:52.

see a bunker shot because it takes quite a lot of penetrating, the

:23:53.:24:00.

sand, by rain. Both of this man's parents won table tennis medals at

:24:01.:24:08.

the Olympics in 1988 in South Korea. A nice snippet of information there.

:24:09.:24:27.

Love those bunkers. Doesn't give much away facially, does he? No. He

:24:28.:24:46.

has a delicate charm about him, I don't know what it is. Van Dyck

:24:47.:24:54.

like. He should have lived 250 years ago. Adam Scott now.

:24:55.:25:05.

Poor old caddy carries so much stuff today, umbrellas, gloves,

:25:06.:25:30.

sandwiches, drinks, water. We still have some umbrellas up and some

:25:31.:25:37.

down. That bag gets heavy with all the equipment in it. I had a caddy

:25:38.:25:42.

who used to fill bubble wrap with helium and put it in the bag and he

:25:43.:25:47.

reckoned it took five lbs off the weight. Where is he off to, keeping

:25:48.:25:56.

his feet dry? Nothing like cold and wet water on your legs. Nobody ever

:25:57.:26:02.

mentions the poor old caddy 's, hot days, uphill and downhill, carrying

:26:03.:26:09.

BB bags. Father and son here, the Cabreras. Yes, did very well after

:26:10.:26:18.

his opening round. He struggled at the 1st but came good yesterday.

:26:19.:26:28.

Matt Kuchar, he's changed his putting method from anchoring in the

:26:29.:26:38.

stomach to anchoring of the left for -- up the left forearm. I was

:26:39.:26:44.

working in America when I first saw him in amateur golf. He turned pro

:26:45.:26:48.

but did not have much success early. But he's really developed into a

:26:49.:26:51.

tiptop player over the last few years. Those flags will be wet, they

:26:52.:26:59.

don't flutter much when they're soaking wet, but that gives you some

:27:00.:27:03.

idea. It is very pleasant at the moment. Kristoffer Broberg. A good

:27:04.:27:12.

week last week in the Scottish. Continuing his good form.

:27:13.:27:31.

Somebody has played out of the trap but Victor Dubuisson is heading back

:27:32.:27:41.

towards it. Every match as a member of the British green keepers

:27:42.:27:44.

Association giving up their time in the holidays to come to the

:27:45.:27:50.

Championship, and every match has a bunker regulator, so if you see

:27:51.:27:53.

somebody walking out seemingly not caring about their footprints, don't

:27:54.:28:01.

be alarmed. Victor Dubuisson, he has had the footprints of his playing

:28:02.:28:07.

partner raked. He's allowed to do that. Sweet shot.

:28:08.:28:27.

Back on the first tee comedy trio of Robert Karlsson, Marc Warren and

:28:28.:28:32.

wily Without a care in the world. On the

:28:33.:28:57.

tee, from Scotland, Marc Warren. APPLAUSE

:28:58.:29:05.

Another player who did well last week and continued to play well.

:29:06.:29:29.

Good-looking player, Warren. But not that... Look out. They look lively.

:29:30.:29:39.

From the USA, Jim Furyk. APPLAUSE I've not heard too many "in the

:29:40.:29:59.

holes", that's been a relief. They are more civilised in this neck of

:30:00.:30:01.

the woods. I remember taking to the great

:30:02.:30:30.

mighty Sam Sne, d many moons ago. I said if he started again, what would

:30:31.:30:36.

he practise, he said driving and shots from 110 yards on the green.

:30:37.:30:40.

I think there is a lot of sense in that. The more I watch golf, the

:30:41.:30:47.

more I realise the importance of someone who can drive the ball on

:30:48.:30:51.

the fairway. I agree, Tiger Woods belies that at

:30:52.:30:55.

times. He has played some miracle shots.

:30:56.:30:59.

There are people that can blast them out of trouble. Here is Adam Scott

:31:00.:31:02.

at the first. Not a million out of trouble. Here is Adam Scott

:31:03.:31:16.

away. People like Lee Trevino were not always on form but he could

:31:17.:31:25.

certainly drive them forward. Fill Mickelson on the 6th. We saw

:31:26.:31:31.

him in the bunker. He has a tired look about him today,

:31:32.:31:35.

Phil. I don't think he has been operating on full power.

:31:36.:31:50.

That little wiggle wiggle, see that? He just got it in.

:31:51.:31:57.

2-under for the day. Well, it is raining but not hard.

:31:58.:32:02.

There are a lot of birdies being made in the first few holes.

:32:03.:32:07.

I hope that shot is out of focus and it is not my eyes! Jimmy Walker, in

:32:08.:32:15.

the front right trap. This for a par. Oh, well, yes.

:32:16.:32:20.

done. A nice drive.

:32:21.:32:28.

Second in the bunker. A good putt, par-4.

:32:29.:32:40.

Tucked away. Almost out of sight, young Rory. A bucket full of balls.

:32:41.:32:47.

Away from prying eyes. I always look at his follow-through

:32:48.:33:01.

mark. I have never seen him off balance.

:33:02.:33:05.

He is very balanced. You are right. He hits it hard.

:33:06.:33:13.

He is not a 6ft 4 man. But watch the power he generates. A big turn. A

:33:14.:33:18.

turn of the shoulders. The right hip opens up going back. He clatters

:33:19.:33:24.

through. Look at that - bang! Every time, you could take a perfect

:33:25.:33:33.

photograph of his follow-through. Victor Dubuisson for a par at the

:33:34.:33:37.

first. Well done.

:33:38.:33:42.

He hole as few putts, too. As you say, I am sure he is almost

:33:43.:33:49.

certain to be in the European team at Gleneagles Hotel in September.

:33:50.:33:59.

Keegan Bradley... I think you would have looked good in your day in a

:34:00.:34:05.

pair of those shoes, Peter. I must say, they have changed since

:34:06.:34:10.

1937. I thought I saw Prince Charles with a pair of those on the other

:34:11.:34:20.

day, or was it the Duke of Edinburgh? Duke of Edinburgh they

:34:21.:34:23.

have given him good service. He is on the second.

:34:24.:34:46.

The members '18th hole. It might be the only 18th hole. We

:34:47.:34:50.

had an e-mail about this yesterday. The 18th hole where you can't see

:34:51.:34:56.

the clubhouse. There are not many golf clubs like that.

:34:57.:35:02.

Is that because of the stands? It is alongside there. 100 yards down

:35:03.:35:08.

level with the club. Unless you have a long telescopic neck, you can't

:35:09.:35:22.

see it. It has suddenly happened that he has

:35:23.:35:26.

become a very good player this fellow.

:35:27.:35:31.

I am not sure about this year. I have not looked at the records but

:35:32.:35:36.

suddenly, not only has he become a good player, he as become a

:35:37.:35:39.

Goodwiner. Robert Karlsson to the first.

:35:40.:36:17.

Furyk's ball looks like it could be in the clumpy bit.

:36:18.:36:29.

Doing rather well, right to the front. A good escape.

:36:30.:36:37.

Yes, you can't teach that sort of ball. The ball above his feet. Down

:36:38.:36:43.

the shaft. Feel it up the fairway, chase it down to the front. It is

:36:44.:36:47.

the thing you either have or don't have.

:36:48.:36:52.

It is an art that has died out. Everything is played up in the air.

:36:53.:36:57.

Molinari from the sand. Not so bad. Look at this... The Italians are

:36:58.:37:04.

known for it, masters of the bunker shot.

:37:05.:37:10.

He holed a good putt on the previous hole for a birdie. Justin Rose is

:37:11.:37:23.

out there. He's on the third, playing with Bill

:37:24.:37:34.

Haas and David Howell. Quite a slow impact club-head speed.

:37:35.:37:40.

What a shot. But unlucky. One little hop forward instead of back and that

:37:41.:37:43.

was almost in the hole. A lovely shot.

:37:44.:38:04.

Well, half of the players on the 10th today.

:38:05.:38:13.

Stephen Gallagher. He could well be in the Ryder Cup team also.

:38:14.:38:20.

Nicely. The flag is tucked behind the two bunkers. Hidden away.

:38:21.:38:26.

He could be a good wildcard if he does not qualify. He has played

:38:27.:38:30.

very, very well at Gleneagles in the last few years.

:38:31.:38:32.

Adam Scott, with a perfect tee shot. Pin front right. Going for a high

:38:33.:38:44.

cut, probably. OK.

:38:45.:38:58.

Justin Rose after that splendid shot into the green. He really has become

:38:59.:39:12.

Justin Rose after that splendid shot a class act over the

:39:13.:39:16.

Justin Rose after that splendid shot five years. Everything looks solid

:39:17.:39:20.

and comfortable. Look at that. A beautiful stroke.

:39:21.:39:32.

He makes it look simple. George Coetzee on the first tee. This will

:39:33.:39:45.

feel like a practise round in Johannesburg.

:39:46.:39:55.

Oh, those bunkers. This fella is a good-looking player,

:39:56.:40:02.

isn't he? I know he has had a lot of injuries, spinal problems but in

:40:03.:40:09.

full flow he is a joy to watch. And Charl Schwartzel. In fact all three

:40:10.:40:14.

have good swings. They have, and all very long

:40:15.:40:17.

hitters. Watch this.

:40:18.:40:22.

Right through the ball. Going towards the bunkers, I fancy. Oh,

:40:23.:40:39.

hello! That's a wild drive. Another very elegant swing.

:40:40.:40:45.

hello! That's a wild drive. taller, slimmer person. That

:40:46.:40:49.

remarkable finish he had when he won the Masters at Augustus. Four or

:40:50.:40:52.

five birdies in a row. He the Masters at Augustus. Four or

:40:53.:40:55.

them off one after the other. looked as if he meant it, too.

:40:56.:41:02.

That was incredible, the finish. Jason Day was in there too.

:41:03.:41:07.

Yes, almost giving him the prize. But this is the epitomy of

:41:08.:41:13.

simplicity and elegance. They don't come much better than

:41:14.:41:33.

that. The ball was travelling well. He

:41:34.:41:37.

pitched that level with the back of the trap. That was 285. A pretty low

:41:38.:41:43.

ball flight. So the ball is still going a long way.

:41:44.:41:50.

My friendly pheasant. Somebody wrote to say that was a grouse. I was

:41:51.:41:56.

thinking of something to sample but they are very handsome. The male of

:41:57.:42:01.

the species, very beautiful. they are very handsome. The male of

:42:02.:42:12.

Oh, that is a magnificent shot! What a play that

:42:13.:42:17.

Oh, that is a magnificent shot! What at the first, he looks like making

:42:18.:42:32.

birdie at the second. This is Molinari.

:42:33.:42:34.

One of the brothers. Only one player on that board has

:42:35.:42:59.

gone out. Eduardo Molinari has played a couple of holes.

:43:00.:43:15.

Tiger Woods is with Jordan Spieth and Gibson off the 10th tee.

:43:16.:43:27.

We are going to join Rishi on the range with Rickie Fowler.

:43:28.:43:33.

Rickie, comparing to the conditions on Thursday, windy yesterday, wet

:43:34.:43:37.

today, how do you deal with the challenge? Well, playing in the rain

:43:38.:43:42.

is never fun. We like to play in dry conditions. But not so bad right

:43:43.:43:46.

now. There is a chance of it picking up and clearing up this afternoon.

:43:47.:43:50.

So we have to go out and see if we can make fun of it and have a good

:43:51.:43:55.

run. Have the two-tee starts had impact

:43:56.:44:00.

in your preparation? Not necessarily it moved the tee time up. But still

:44:01.:44:05.

going off in number one. With the leaders' group. Looking forward to a

:44:06.:44:12.

good warm-up and getting out there. 6-under, two days to go, how strong

:44:13.:44:17.

do you feel about your challenge? I feel comfortable here. I definitely

:44:18.:44:23.

felt good this year in the Majors. And this week in the golf course.

:44:24.:44:28.

Excited about the round today. Rickie Fowler, I called him Robbie

:44:29.:44:37.

yesterday, somebody spotlighted it! -- somebody spotted it! Manassero.

:44:38.:44:45.

There were all gaggle of footballers here yesterday. Fellas with nothing

:44:46.:44:52.

to do for a few weeks. Robbie Fowler was here and Mr Moyes.

:44:53.:44:59.

They should be off on a preseason tour soon.

:45:00.:45:04.

There is Mr Tiger. What is he wearing today? Oh, I say! He gave it

:45:05.:45:15.

a go. Well, I know it is early days yet

:45:16.:45:23.

but we are almost up to 10.45am. The weather is not bad. Are we going to

:45:24.:45:28.

get lucky on this little Wirral peninsula?

:45:29.:45:41.

This, for Jimmy Walker's birdie. Yep, safely in. A good start.

:45:42.:46:04.

He sort of lopes along. His feet looks to be about size 14

:46:05.:46:12.

shoes, slightly drainpipe trousers. He just wanders along. He doesn't

:46:13.:46:16.

look as if he knows where he is or whether or not he should be here. I

:46:17.:46:20.

find it refreshing. He looks like a club golfer.

:46:21.:46:30.

Yes "how did I find my way here?" Like the shirts bought in a golf pro

:46:31.:46:40.

shop... Yes, or a special sale! When you look, this looks a wide target.

:46:41.:46:47.

Not a breath of wind, all you have to do is hit it straight. And he

:46:48.:46:54.

has. He hit it nicely! That was some form of wedge with the club.

:46:55.:46:58.

I thought his shirt was soaking wet but I notice it is nicely patterned.

:46:59.:47:11.

Here is George. There is George. George has a

:47:12.:47:17.

comfort build, Perrault for comfort not speed. The patron saint of

:47:18.:47:29.

Tetleys! He is a bit of a slow developer but a good-looking player.

:47:30.:47:35.

You watch this swing. Simple, back and through. Not much to go wrong

:47:36.:47:50.

there. That was his third. He hit it in the

:47:51.:47:57.

bunkers on the right. A slightly suspect start for him.

:47:58.:48:21.

He has some risk heading for that target.

:48:22.:48:25.

Now, this is the brother that had an operation. Was it on the wrist or

:48:26.:48:29.

the hand? He had a reputation of being a super putter.

:48:30.:48:42.

Now to Justin Rose. The second shot. Nicely done.

:48:43.:48:45.

A joy to watch. We saw his drives carry the rough on

:48:46.:49:03.

to the next tees. . He must have slashed it out here.

:49:04.:49:08.

to the next tees. . He must have slashed it out It

:49:09.:49:09.

looked a muscly effort from that rough.

:49:10.:49:39.

Now back to rough.

:49:40.:49:48.

? COMMENTATOR: On the tee from Spain, Sergio

:49:49.:49:54.

Garcia. 68 and 70, Sergio.

:49:55.:50:15.

For years he has had a reputation of being a beautiful driver of the

:50:16.:50:34.

ball. This is not a huge target. It must

:50:35.:50:39.

be fairly straight. That is to the left.

:50:40.:50:42.

Trouble. That is where he was yesterday. In the rough on the left.

:50:43.:50:48.

Oh, you never know. Lap of the Gods. ? COMMENTATOR:

:50:49.:50:50.

On the tee from USA, Rickie Fowler. He's been around for three or four

:50:51.:51:10.

years, although he is still only in his early 20s. A quick rhythm.

:51:11.:51:15.

Aggressive young player. Exciting to watch.

:51:16.:51:28.

Still only 25, Peter. He has been around for years but still only very

:51:29.:51:31.

young. That looks good.

:51:32.:51:43.

A massive hit. COMMENTOR: On the tee from USA, Ryan Moore.

:51:44.:51:51.

Now, this is almost as if he is playing golf by numbers. Very much

:51:52.:51:56.

his own swing. It is a bit Matsuyama-like, isn't

:51:57.:52:06.

it? Yes, if you have a vivid imagination. Watch the way he takes

:52:07.:52:11.

the club back at an odd angle and gets it back in line and gives it a

:52:12.:52:13.

pump. gets it back in line and gives it a

:52:14.:52:31.

It looks OK. Only one more

:52:32.:52:33.

It looks OK. first, now.

:52:34.:52:36.

Francesco Molinari, dust dust -- Dustin Johnson.

:52:37.:52:58.

That is perfect. Dustin Johnson.

:52:59.:53:04.

When did the 5pm shadow become designer stubble? Was that 10 or 15

:53:05.:53:13.

years ago? The idea you shaved when you went to work. I blame Goosen.

:53:14.:53:24.

That set the trend. Were you horrified? Horrified.

:53:25.:53:29.

I don't know why people with grey beards bother. It makes them look

:53:30.:53:38.

100. The greens still look absolutely

:53:39.:53:44.

beautiful. Jimmy Walker at 5-under.

:53:45.:53:56.

That could be superb. This man can really play! He did 196 tournaments

:53:57.:54:02.

without doing anything much and suddenly he woke up one morning and

:54:03.:54:08.

thought "I can do this if I can do that", he has never looked back.

:54:09.:54:15.

He has won three events recently, probably get to the Ryder Cup team.

:54:16.:54:23.

He still has an air of "where am I?" It is all incense. Everything that

:54:24.:54:32.

Tiger Woods does is of interest. The black ribbons of course are in

:54:33.:54:37.

memory of Bob Torrance who passed away yesterday.

:54:38.:54:41.

Yes, a lovely character, Bob. I spent many a time having a chat with

:54:42.:54:46.

him and his wife, June. He loved an argument over the

:54:47.:54:52.

technical aspects of the golf swing. Don't argue with Bob. You didn't

:54:53.:54:57.

argue with Bob. He could not do with people that got too technical. He

:54:58.:55:03.

got as many things right before you started, and then you hit the ball.

:55:04.:55:08.

Here comes Rory on his way from the clubhouse. Over the bridge to the

:55:09.:55:13.

first tee. Just in time to welcome in Andrew

:55:14.:55:22.

Cotter, preparing himself frantically. He has been desperate

:55:23.:55:26.

to give me all sorts of wonderful information.

:55:27.:55:37.

He has that look about him, Rory. He looks nervous. But I think that

:55:38.:55:41.

is a good thing. You should be nervous at this point.

:55:42.:55:46.

How do you know he looks nervous? What tells you? The eyes, the face.

:55:47.:55:51.

He is thinking hard. Apart from that? It doesn't look as

:55:52.:55:57.

though he is wandering where to get an ice-cream.

:55:58.:56:00.

I don't know. It is all so difficult now.

:56:01.:56:07.

I wonder what Bobby Lock would make of it all now, bless him. Peter

:56:08.:56:15.

Thompson. He won his third consecutive Open in

:56:16.:56:24.

the 50s? I think so. Here he come, welcome, Rory! Iver

:56:25.:56:41.

gives him a scorecard. Check to see he has a pencil. All of that sort of

:56:42.:56:47.

thing. I am told by Alistair Scott, that there is a big box of pencils

:56:48.:56:54.

and every day the same people take a handful of pencils and a handful of

:56:55.:56:59.

tees and where they put them, you don't know. They just disappear.

:57:00.:57:06.

Wimbledon towells are the same. They through it to the crowd.

:57:07.:57:14.

Well, there we are. You look after that... Here is Molinari.

:57:15.:57:26.

The second to the fourth. Short in the back swing. That will

:57:27.:57:29.

do. Andrew, your thoughts so far, it is

:57:30.:57:55.

not a bad morning, is it? Very, very good scoring conditions for the

:57:56.:58:00.

players. For Rory McIlroy it has dampened down the course a little

:58:01.:58:03.

bit. It is never target golf on a Links

:58:04.:58:08.

course. But the conditions are ideal when the rain holds off.

:58:09.:58:18.

First off here at Royal Liverpool. 458 yards. A pressure cooker of the

:58:19.:58:25.

U-shaped stand there. The bunkerses on the right at 260 and 275. 280 to

:58:26.:58:32.

the left-hand ones. A well trapped green.

:58:33.:58:36.

Pinned today, right where the representation shows. Backish to the

:58:37.:58:39.

left with the deep bunker guarding it. It is not a tiny target unless

:58:40.:58:46.

you lay out well back. If you go in with a 5-iron it hits moor. It is a

:58:47.:58:53.

big target for a wedge. Looking at the conditions, Mark,

:58:54.:58:58.

with hardly a breath of wind. That is good for Rory McIlroy. There are

:58:59.:59:02.

a few questions over his ability in the high winds, even though he

:59:03.:59:07.

scored well in the first round at Royal Aberdeen.

:59:08.:59:11.

It make it is more predictable, no question. He would be happy with the

:59:12.:59:15.

conditions. In these conditions, a good player

:59:16.:59:18.

who is playing well will have much less chance of a poor score.

:59:19.:59:23.

It seems strange for the leaders to head off at 11.00am on the morning

:59:24.:59:32.

of an Open Championship. So, it is. The first time, a two-tee start in

:59:33.:59:38.

150-plus years of the Open Championship.

:59:39.:59:41.

Tiger is on the 10th tee. I don't know if the cloning

:59:42.:59:46.

programme has succeeded but otherwise a different starter out on

:59:47.:59:48.

the tenth. . It is a long way away.

:59:49.:59:56.

He is on the par-5. They are driven out and buggied up.

:59:57.:00:02.

An easier opening hole on the first. The conditions playing relatively

:00:03.:00:04.

benign. He is to open with a driver. We will head back to the first green

:00:05.:00:27.

and Sergio Garcia. Frank Nobilo is here. Thank you, Andrew. A little

:00:28.:00:46.

too firm. Ladies and gentlemen, the final game today, on the tee from

:00:47.:00:50.

Italy, Francesco Molinari. APPLAUSE Rounds of 68 and 70 from Francesco

:00:51.:01:10.

Molinari. 6-under par, six behind his playing partner.

:01:11.:01:29.

Not a lot of rapturous applause. And that's why. We can see half the

:01:30.:01:37.

ball. On the tee, from Dustin Johnson. APPLAUSE

:01:38.:01:50.

A nice welcome for Dustin Johnson, the big hitting American. He is

:01:51.:01:53.

attempting to take the bunkers out of play by hitting a driver. And

:01:54.:01:59.

there is a little bit of breeze coming up in the last few seconds

:02:00.:02:01.

that is helping the players. Played superbly yesterday, the

:02:02.:02:14.

lowest round of the Championship so far, 65. Dustin Johnson starts four

:02:15.:02:23.

behind. On the tee from Northern Ireland, Rory McIlroy. APPLAUSE

:02:24.:02:35.

The first two Majors of the year, Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer, they

:02:36.:02:41.

both had the 36 hole lead. And he catches a sliver of the right

:02:42.:03:04.

side. What a coincidence. The rain stopped, as it should. Sprinkled

:03:05.:03:18.

cries of support from the crowd, that will urge him on. He will try

:03:19.:03:25.

to deal with the expectation. People think he will run away with this

:03:26.:03:32.

now. So much can happen over 36 holes here at Royal Liverpool.

:03:33.:03:42.

Garcia somehow trying to get away with five. Brilliant. Limit the

:03:43.:03:48.

damage. Powerful trio moving forward,

:03:49.:04:02.

Molinari is a beautiful swinger of the club. We know Dustin Johnson

:04:03.:04:09.

certainly has the power if the wind gets up. And the unbridled talent of

:04:10.:04:11.

McIlroy. Molinari and Dustin will be lacking

:04:12.:04:35.

for a bit of support out there. They played on the opposing teams in the

:04:36.:04:40.

Moore to save par on the green. It has been a series of struggles.

:04:53.:04:56.

George Coetzee bogeyed at the 1st, so did Oosthuizen. Garcia looks like

:04:57.:05:08.

he will bogey the first. Ahead at three, maybe we will see a red one.

:05:09.:05:18.

There are birdies out there. The green is a little after. -- little

:05:19.:05:32.

softer. The first, for an opening three. Lovely start by Rickie

:05:33.:05:37.

Fowler. The chase is on. Garcia, his blade was slightly open

:05:38.:05:57.

there, closed at impact. That is a five.

:05:58.:06:11.

Looking down there on the leaders. Maureen Madill is down there

:06:12.:06:25.

watching this group. It will be an interesting day today. Rory's father

:06:26.:06:30.

but they bet on ten years ago that by the age of 25 Rory would win the

:06:31.:06:35.

open. He wanted to put on ?400 but the bookmakers would not allow, so

:06:36.:06:41.

he put ?100 down and got three friends to do the same and he got

:06:42.:06:47.

odds of 500-1. What does by the age of 25 mean? Is the bet is still

:06:48.:06:56.

good? Rory is 25 just now. He is 25, what does by the age of 25, mean? I

:06:57.:07:04.

imagine it still counts, the whole year of being 25. Molinari has

:07:05.:07:07.

leaked his tee shot to the right hand side. It is a very skinny green

:07:08.:07:14.

so he sat a real disadvantage compare to the other two who only

:07:15.:07:20.

have a wedge in their hands. It is a medium sort of lie, but he has to go

:07:21.:07:24.

in with something like a 6-iron minimum. You can see the two in

:07:25.:07:33.

front of the green. Even the bunker short will be a problem. A nice

:07:34.:07:37.

little collection. Even if you get a good one in the middle of the green,

:07:38.:07:41.

it should feed down towards the flag. You know that Francesco

:07:42.:07:50.

Molinari is not going to be drawn into, or could even start to compete

:07:51.:07:56.

in a driving contest with Johnson and McIlroy. He plays a different

:07:57.:08:01.

type of game. This whole has not been kind to him, he bogeyed it on

:08:02.:08:04.

the first two days. -- this hole. Chokes down on it a little bit.

:08:05.:08:24.

Looks to be heading a little bit left. More than a little bit. You

:08:25.:08:33.

can see the problems he will have for his third shot. The other two

:08:34.:08:40.

shots, 60 yards further ahead of him. We waxed lyrical about

:08:41.:08:45.

McIlroy's drive on the 17th yesterday, but Dustin Johnson

:08:46.:08:50.

certainly have the same distance, possibly passed it. It is a perfect

:08:51.:08:59.

angle here four McIlroy into the first green. This is the only hole

:09:00.:09:04.

he bogeyed in the his 36 holes so far, and that was yesterday. 145

:09:05.:09:10.

yards, a nice, quiet wedge. Well, like yesterday, the perfect

:09:11.:09:39.

drive and all of a sudden, a little opportunity for Dustin Johnson. To

:09:40.:09:44.

perhaps cut into that lead straight away. A different tournament a long

:09:45.:09:50.

time ago and a lot of experience has been gained by them, but in the

:09:51.:09:53.

Masters when he led going into the final round... We certainly can't

:09:54.:10:00.

give this to McIlroy just yet. Johnson will be a formidable

:10:01.:10:06.

opponent today. This part of the course can get congested and Johnson

:10:07.:10:09.

is just waiting for one of the tee shots from the second but he's now

:10:10.:10:22.

going in with a sand macro iron. It kicks forward. A beautiful shot from

:10:23.:10:23.

Johnson. There could quickly be a two shot

:10:24.:10:34.

swing on the opening hole. Shane Lowry with a birdie putt. He

:10:35.:11:05.

coped with some pretty grim conditions well in the Irish Open a

:11:06.:11:08.

few years ago, where he beat Robert Rock in a play-off. The par-3 6th.

:11:09.:11:23.

An Byeong-Hun will stop what an amazing start. Rickie Fowler at the

:11:24.:11:34.

2nd. Things do now row considerably up

:11:35.:11:54.

here, hardly any wind, but what there is into their faces just makes

:11:55.:11:56.

this drive there is into their faces just makes

:11:57.:12:04.

things do narrow. This hole has been kind to Sergio. He made a two here

:12:05.:12:11.

on the third round in 2006, holed his second shot yesterday. Smack

:12:12.:12:12.

bang in the fairway today. An awkward first pitch before

:12:13.:12:29.

Molinari here. Lots of lumps and bumps between him and the hole. His

:12:30.:12:33.

best bet is to try to carry them and land on the green but the ball will

:12:34.:12:40.

probably release past the hole. Very nicely done from there. Has a chance

:12:41.:12:44.

of saving par. It'll be about ten feet. You can see

:12:45.:13:02.

the side wall of the bunker that Rory will be in.

the side wall of the bunker that bunker player. Very delicate shot

17th encapsulated his problems with the driver, but

:14:23.:14:26.

17th encapsulated his problems with got up and down to make the cut and

:14:27.:14:33.

a great putt, but he got over it. Almost as if he wasn't happy to be

:14:34.:14:37.

here. I'm sure he is, but it was curiouser watching him yesterday.

:14:38.:14:42.

Peter Alliss said it right yesterday when he asked whether he really

:14:43.:14:51.

wanted to be here. But the triple at 17 really changed his demeanour.

:14:52.:15:02.

Just one bogey all week for Rory. It came here yesterday. The little bit

:15:03.:15:09.

of moisture on the greens will take a fraction of the borrower out of

:15:10.:15:13.

these putts compare to the last couple of days. Quite a fast putt

:15:14.:15:16.

for Rory. Left edge. Imagine the possibility of a two

:15:17.:15:35.

shot swing. It's certainly not dead. Furyk, ahead at three. That will

:15:36.:15:47.

pour in. The open Championships in the last few years have been kind to

:15:48.:15:54.

those over 40. Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson. Maybe we could

:15:55.:15:59.

add Jim Furyk to the end of that. Can Molinari somehow escaped with

:16:00.:16:07.

four here at the opening hole? It would be a good escape because he

:16:08.:16:11.

was a long way back off the tee. Not much in this one.

:16:12.:16:36.

Rickie Fowler at the 2nd. A good look at the pin, on the right-hand

:16:37.:16:41.

side. Good for distance. Well, this could

:16:42.:16:59.

be a dream start for Johnson, potentially a two shot swing at

:17:00.:17:03.

least, if he can hole this one. APPLAUSE

:17:04.:17:16.

The second shot certainly deserved that. Thumped the drive down there.

:17:17.:17:25.

Reduced 450 yards to just a drive and a mere sand iron. Instantly cuts

:17:26.:17:29.

into the lead. Four becomes two as quickly as that.

:17:30.:17:40.

I tell you what, Frank, Four becomes two as quickly as that.

:17:41.:17:51.

only just made it. Take the bogey and move on. He responded well to

:17:52.:17:54.

the bogey yesterday with three birdies on the front nine. Look at

:17:55.:18:05.

that, a two shot lead. It's actually rather nice right now. A little

:18:06.:18:10.

overcast, no rain, good conditions to play in. Perfect drive by Garcia.

:18:11.:18:22.

It has got to carry the bunker. Kicked forward... That's the

:18:23.:18:29.

difference, balls are not kicking forward, they are spinning back

:18:30.:18:33.

today. You have to change a game plan as quick as you can. This for a

:18:34.:18:39.

second birdie for Justin Rose in his opening few holes. It's there

:18:40.:18:47.

somewhere... Right there. Justin Rose moves to four under.

:18:48.:18:56.

Young Manassero, wicked start with bogeys at one and two. This is for

:18:57.:19:04.

four in a row now because he lit it up after, birdies at three, Kocher,

:19:05.:19:10.

five and you might as well make it six! -- three, four, five. All of

:19:11.:19:27.

the nice colours. For five and six -- four, five and six have been

:19:28.:19:32.

giving them away. Rickie Fowler at the 2nd. This should swing from the

:19:33.:19:38.

front of the green towards the back. Birdie, birdie start for Fowler. He

:19:39.:19:48.

was in the hunt, even though he was a long way behind Kaymer, at the

:19:49.:19:56.

previous major. Johnson and Fowler chasing a Northern Ireland. 20 of

:19:57.:20:06.

distance with the 3-wood, Dustin Johnson. -- plenty of distance.

:20:07.:20:15.

There is a clutch of bunkers about 300 yards out, two down the right,

:20:16.:20:20.

18 bit further out down the left. Molinari can hit driver here and he

:20:21.:20:26.

won't reach them. -- one a bit further. I'm looking forward to

:20:27.:20:31.

seeing this because he can be a magnificent ball striker.

:20:32.:20:46.

He missed the fairway on the right for the second straight time.

:20:47.:20:55.

Unusual. He's been a bit topsy-turvy this week, he's been putting well,

:20:56.:20:58.

right near the top of the stats, but not quite so accurate. I'm sure he

:20:59.:21:09.

will have to go to a fairway wood. 3-wood for McIlroy, same clothing as

:21:10.:21:13.

Johnson. I think they might be similar all the way round. -- same

:21:14.:21:17.

clothing clubbing. That's that that only 17 half-time

:21:18.:21:41.

leaders in the last 43 years -- that stat. Have gone on to win a major.

:21:42.:21:51.

Garcia at six, trying to get that shot back that he let slip at the

:21:52.:21:57.

1st. Beautifully done. This hole and Sergio Garcia get on very well

:21:58.:22:02.

indeed. Bosom buddies. Eagle yesterday, and Eagle in 2006, birdie

:22:03.:22:14.

today. Back where he started. The Irishman, Shane Lowry, to get to

:22:15.:22:22.

5-under. The leaders are all moving forward. Once you get past the first

:22:23.:22:33.

couple of holes, there are a lot of Berdych answers. A lot of birdies

:22:34.:22:39.

have been scattered round, three, four, five and six. -- a lot of

:22:40.:22:46.

birdie chances. A lot of the conditions now are better than they

:22:47.:22:50.

were on Thursday. The breeze never got up that high on Thursday.

:22:51.:22:59.

Sergio Garcia with his tee shot on the third. Phil -- Philip Parkin is

:23:00.:23:12.

watching this group today. Rickie Fowler has got off to a good start

:23:13.:23:18.

today, he's on birdie, birdie. Hit to the corner of the dogleg, 52

:23:19.:23:30.

yards to the corner. Out of bounds all the way down the right-hand side

:23:31.:23:36.

of the hole. Not far away, and when the wind blows, it's not too far

:23:37.:23:41.

from your thoughts. You can see on the way down, he just increases the

:23:42.:23:48.

angle. Plays the ball back in his stance. UCB jarring in the left

:23:49.:23:53.

wrist. We see so many injuries nowadays, pounding down onto the

:23:54.:23:55.

turf. -- UC the. Robert Karlsson is another man

:23:56.:24:13.

moving in the right their action. 1-under in his first three holes.

:24:14.:24:18.

Into that group at 5-under, tied for eighth at the moment. Tiger Woods

:24:19.:24:27.

birdied his 1st hole, this is 11 now. Just a short wedge in here. A

:24:28.:24:33.

nice touch as well. If you looked at his cap there, a black ribbon.

:24:34.:24:40.

Condolences to the Torrance family. his cap there, a black ribbon.

:24:41.:24:54.

I think Tiger considered his cap there, a black ribbon.

:24:55.:24:55.

Torrance as a coach at one stage. lot of Afrikaans will be spoken,

:24:56.:25:04.

Charl Schwartzel and Oosthuizen both there. I suspect Molinari will only

:25:05.:25:11.

try to lay this up to the front edge of the green from a nasty lie. Well,

:25:12.:25:15.

a struggle. of the green from a nasty lie. Well,

:25:16.:25:24.

to the left. Once again he will have a tough time getting that one up and

:25:25.:25:31.

down. -- missed the first green. Always different types of nerves.

:25:32.:25:39.

Sometimes anticipation. Nice controlled swing for Dustin Johnson.

:25:40.:25:47.

It's the right distance. To carry that bunker on the left. An uphill

:25:48.:25:49.

putt from the centre of the green. This is just a 9-iron left for

:25:50.:26:06.

McIlroy. And a high-flying, soft landing ball flight is perfect for

:26:07.:26:11.

this pin that is tucked in behind the right-hand bunker. He certainly

:26:12.:26:15.

has that shot in his armoury. Can he pull it off?

:26:16.:26:22.

APPLAUSE OK. If in doubt, head to the middle

:26:23.:26:39.

of the green. You can always putt to the corners.

:26:40.:26:48.

JP Fitzgerald on the bag has been with McIlroy for a while now. A

:26:49.:26:54.

soothing presence. Marc Warren at four. 1-over for his round today.

:26:55.:27:04.

Dropped a shot at the 2nd but right at the flag. Surely he'll get it

:27:05.:27:05.

back there. He's playing with one of the elder

:27:06.:27:20.

statesmen of the game. Swing has never changed. And it doesn't have

:27:21.:27:33.

to do. Another good one. A well rested and fresh Jim Furyk. He took

:27:34.:27:37.

some family time after the U.S. Open. Now Tiger is out on the darker

:27:38.:27:43.

reaches of the course. This is for back-to-back birdies to start.

:27:44.:27:50.

Oh! Tiger Woods was talking yesterday about still trying to get

:27:51.:28:00.

himself into position moving to the final nine holes on Sunday. Two

:28:01.:28:05.

birdies and a long par, it's a long shot but if there is a man who can

:28:06.:28:10.

dig into his experience and pull out some magic, you never know.

:28:11.:28:17.

Yesterday was a chastening day for him. Again we wanted to see him

:28:18.:28:22.

tested with the driver. He wanted to be more aggressive, but he failed

:28:23.:28:27.

the test. I think he was forced to give the conditions. Justin Rose

:28:28.:28:40.

bears down. Conditions like this, more bogeys than normal.

:28:41.:28:54.

Well-positioned for Sergio Garcia. Still 196 yards left. We have a

:28:55.:29:03.

gentle breeze guarding the shot, slightly off the left. -- helping

:29:04.:29:09.

the shot. Just a 7-iron. Still getting some firm bounces but he has

:29:10.:29:14.

hit that incredibly high. Surely it will come down softly. And so it

:29:15.:29:20.

does. A feathery touch on the greens and a birdie opportunity for Garcia.

:29:21.:29:34.

What they start for Rickie Fowler. There's only two players who shot in

:29:35.:29:43.

the 60s on both rounds. McIlroy on 66, Fowler on 69 and 69. The way

:29:44.:29:50.

he's started, he will be in the 60s again today. 184 yards left.

:29:51.:30:01.

That's just an 8-iron. Another good shot.

:30:02.:30:12.

. I would like to think that Rickie would have learned. He has a

:30:13.:30:22.

tendency to be a little quick. Some polite applause. It should

:30:23.:30:42.

should be a bogey/bogey start, though.

:30:43.:31:05.

There is a hollow in the middle of this green. Rory's ball has gathered

:31:06.:31:09.

into the that. The first part is uphill. He needs to give this a good

:31:10.:31:17.

bash. A miscalculation. A big misjudgment

:31:18.:31:24.

from Rory McIlroy! Wow! Not even close.

:31:25.:31:33.

Is it still Friday in Hawaii? I thought it was Groundhog Day

:31:34.:31:42.

yesterday! Do you think that the unthinkable could be gone? Now back

:31:43.:31:51.

to Furyk. 7-under. If he looks up at the

:31:52.:31:58.

leaderboard in another five minutes, he just may find himself in touching

:31:59.:32:03.

distance. That putt of Rory Rory Rory's will

:32:04.:32:08.

have interested Dustin Johnson. He raced on down there. This is coming

:32:09.:32:12.

from a different angle. But let's see what the American does with

:32:13.:32:24.

this. He has a lovely touch this morning.

:32:25.:32:28.

Well done. That will be in for a four.

:32:29.:32:32.

He knew it was right on line, too. Two more rolls, it would have made

:32:33.:32:38.

it to the hole. Rory's is nearly ten feet past.

:32:39.:33:16.

It goes to 5-under. If there is ever any part of his

:33:17.:33:23.

game that tends to let Rory down it is the putting. He can be a

:33:24.:33:29.

streaking putter. This could set the tone for the rest of the day.

:33:30.:33:43.

Yes! He gets it. Rory McIlroy, steadis things. That

:33:44.:33:53.

was a big, big putt. E He still leads by two.

:33:54.:34:02.

Francesco Molinari, a bogey at the first and a bogey at the second.

:34:03.:34:08.

Back to 4-under. So, time to unclutter the mind for

:34:09.:34:19.

Molinari. When you were playing would you have liked to chat and

:34:20.:34:29.

have a laugh with the guys you are competing against? I am thinking of

:34:30.:34:31.

Faldo against Norman. Great rivries but they would not have exchanged a

:34:32.:34:34.

word? It depends. You basically do anything that helps you and may

:34:35.:34:45.

affect somebody else. You go back to Trevino throwing the snake at his

:34:46.:34:51.

opponent. Something that you would not expect. Norman Faldo was another

:34:52.:35:01.

one, he would prefer to chat, Nick would not.

:35:02.:35:08.

Now a chance for Rickie Fowler to get to 9-under. Close.

:35:09.:35:13.

You will find that they will talk a little more on Thursday than they

:35:14.:35:14.

will on Saturday and even less tomorrow.

:35:15.:35:26.

will on Saturday and even less Robert Karlsson, Marc Warren and Jim

:35:27.:35:43.

Furyk. So, Garcia would have learned from that previous putt.

:35:44.:35:55.

He stays in the tie for fifth. An ideal shot. About 230 down the

:35:56.:36:07.

left half. Just to theble of the dog leg.

:36:08.:36:34.

Elbow of the dog leg. The going is much softer. Some 20

:36:35.:36:48.

feet away. If you do a split screen, the

:36:49.:36:53.

contrast is bleached white. An extraordinary difference. A fairway

:36:54.:36:58.

first for Rickie. Keeping it short of the two bunkers.

:36:59.:37:05.

His rhythm, it is much better than what it was at the last Major.

:37:06.:37:13.

A little smoother. It looks like it could have settled down a divet. You

:37:14.:37:20.

can see the transition. If it is too quick, obviously the body is too far

:37:21.:37:32.

ahead of your hands.le. Playing alongside Ryan Moore.

:37:33.:37:54.

Hardly any breeze. That's nestled down a bit. That is his own swing,

:37:55.:38:11.

Ryan Moore. It works very nicely. Jimmy Walker. Well done.

:38:12.:38:27.

Jimmy pushes forward. 7-under. 7-under, what a start for

:38:28.:38:34.

him. A nice bit of congestion. It is all stacking up. Rory McIlroy

:38:35.:38:40.

is still clear and Johnson. But behind all these players, they are

:38:41.:38:46.

ganging up. Sergio Garcia going the same place as Ryan Moore.

:38:47.:39:04.

Untidy with the irons off the 4th. Galloway, the Scotsman.

:39:05.:39:15.

-- Stephen Gallagher, the Scotsman. He has every chance of being in the

:39:16.:39:29.

Ryder Cup. Rory McIlroy just off the edge of

:39:30.:39:33.

the fairway on the third. It is a fine lie for Rory McIlroy.

:39:34.:39:38.

Johnson is another ten or 15 yards up. Also a good lie. Molinari is in

:39:39.:39:45.

the middle of the green. 202 yards. This is a 6-iron for Rory. This club

:39:46.:39:51.

has served him well. He has knocked it stone dead a couple of times.

:39:52.:40:17.

Very nicely done. Would you twirl your club after a perfect shot? You

:40:18.:40:24.

are allowed to admire your work now and then. As you slow this down, you

:40:25.:40:32.

can see every sinew. He has changed shape. He really has worked hard on

:40:33.:40:44.

his fitness. He could have done without the extra

:40:45.:40:48.

kick off the shoulder. He is yet to hit a green in regulation. It is

:40:49.:40:54.

normally his forte. Dustin Johnson... Trying to ease it

:40:55.:41:06.

back with some body language. That will be a test for the short

:41:07.:41:08.

game. Tiger with a birdie attempt.

:41:09.:42:03.

He's wondering why that didn't move. Victor Dubuisson, a few sixes. A few

:42:04.:42:11.

birdies today, he will get a little more attention.

:42:12.:42:15.

Charl Schwartzel for a birdie on the fourth. Another one to collect

:42:16.:42:22.

there. That hole is playing gently. Charl Schwartzel moves to 7-under

:42:23.:42:29.

par. Plenty of changes on the third day.

:42:30.:42:35.

Happily, the rather apocalyptic warnings of terrible weather have

:42:36.:42:39.

not materialised. We have come off the red lightening warning, we are

:42:40.:42:45.

now on amber. 2.00pm is the next danger time for possible thunder

:42:46.:42:50.

storms. Not affecting the likes of Dustin Johnson. He made up on Rory

:42:51.:42:55.

McIlroy. There are birdies aplenty. Jimmy Walker going well. And Paul

:42:56.:43:05.

Lawrie 4-under for his round. Byeong-Hun An lives in Florida, he

:43:06.:43:10.

was a 22-year-old qualifier. So a lot of movement out there. And the

:43:11.:43:21.

Scots, Warren and Stephen Gallagher also making round.

:43:22.:43:25.

David Howell who got the championship under way this morning

:43:26.:43:30.

at 6. 25am, he hit the tee shot first, he has put together a strong

:43:31.:43:34.

challenge. Darren Clarke, he started his round

:43:35.:43:38.

at the 10th today as half of the field have. It is the first two-tee

:43:39.:43:43.

start in Open Championship history. Back with you at the third.

:43:44.:43:52.

Adam Scott is treading water on 3-under par. In this group,

:43:53.:44:00.

Francesco Molinari is going backwards. But Dustin Johnson is

:44:01.:44:03.

pushing Rory McIlroy hard. Sergio Garcia is on the fourth.

:44:04.:44:08.

A decent lie. Just a wedge. He should have a good idea of how he

:44:09.:44:18.

will come out of there. He scared his golf ball into putting

:44:19.:44:22.

the breaks on. A lovely shot. An iron off the tee

:44:23.:44:29.

wedge and Garcia, betters his chance.

:44:30.:44:54.

It's a tricky one from distance. Second shot on the fourth for Rickie

:44:55.:45:04.

Fowler. A very aggressive player. A great shot from Rickie Fowler,

:45:05.:45:09.

getting better. And Rickie Fowler is making a decent move. That for three

:45:10.:45:16.

birdies in four holes to get within two of McIrrational Roy.

:45:17.:45:25.

-- Rory Tiger Woods has reached the 13th.

:45:26.:45:52.

Only his fourth hole of the day. He is

:45:53.:46:25.

202 yards, this is playing today. Well good for distance. You can see

:46:26.:46:38.

the pin all the way up the back. A very decent shot from Tiger Woods.

:46:39.:46:44.

Ken Brown is back in the box. Thank you, Andrew. Rory McIlroy

:46:45.:46:55.

putting up the green for a birdie. So a steady start for Rory. Dropping

:46:56.:47:06.

a stroke at the first, a par at the second, there should be a par at the

:47:07.:47:19.

third. He's at 11-under par. He started the

:47:20.:47:26.

day at 12-under. In the next hour the rain rooks to

:47:27.:47:44.

be a bit lighter. Looks to be

:47:45.:47:48.

Let's see if Molinari knocks this in.

:47:49.:47:54.

On a morning where the course is at its most vulnerable, a little more

:47:55.:48:00.

yielding in the greens. Perfect putting surfaces, and the lightest

:48:01.:48:19.

of light breezes. Molinari hails from Turin but lives

:48:20.:48:26.

in London now. Johnson should tidy this one nicely

:48:27.:48:29.

away. Playing very much with himself at

:48:30.:48:31.

the moment. Birdie at the first, two pars,

:48:32.:49:03.

9-under par for Justin. Looking down the fourth hole. Good

:49:04.:49:07.

morning, Mark. I know you have been on before. But it is still good

:49:08.:49:11.

morning. Morning, Ken. It is all very

:49:12.:49:15.

interesting. 10th hole of Darren Clarke's round,

:49:16.:49:20.

the first. And that is beautifully done. His third birdie in a row. It

:49:21.:49:27.

takes him to minus-3. That is currently in 14th position.

:49:28.:49:42.

They are creeping up on Rory. I think Rory has to be a little

:49:43.:49:47.

cautious at attacking the tricky pins. Making the most of the easy

:49:48.:49:53.

ones, the par fives. There are one or two deadly pins.

:49:54.:49:59.

You must play those with a bit of caution.

:50:00.:50:08.

Presumably they have put the pins on slightly higher edges.

:50:09.:50:15.

It does not make it any easier. A few putts sliding past the edge

:50:16.:50:18.

for Sergio Garcia when he wants a fast start.

:50:19.:50:36.

Johnson off the fourth tee. That sort of opens up the pin that

:50:37.:50:40.

is front right. But it looked to have nestled a fraction. It may be

:50:41.:50:44.

difficult to control the spin. Rory also with an iron. There is a

:50:45.:50:48.

picture of the hole. The bunker is to the right. Two on the left. The

:50:49.:50:52.

players are laying up short of all of those. That will leave a 9-iron

:50:53.:50:59.

to the green. I'm not sure it will be going that

:51:00.:51:05.

far up. The key here is to find the fairway. That's the bogey.

:51:06.:51:14.

He can spin it from there to the front right pin. Nice.

:51:15.:51:26.

Rickie Fowler, oh... Uphill right to left. An inviting putt for a

:51:27.:51:42.

right-hander. A dandy of a start, still. Birdies in the first and the

:51:43.:51:47.

second. Victor Dubuisson. Sixth green. This

:51:48.:51:55.

is for birdie. 1-under already, this is to go 2-under for the day and six

:51:56.:52:09.

in total. Jim Furyk.

:52:10.:52:27.

A cross-handed putter. He has had an amazing career.

:52:28.:52:51.

Where the balls of Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson? There are so many

:52:52.:53:01.

people here. I don't know how they keep their concentration, the

:53:02.:53:07.

golfers. There were four TV cameramen behind them. You really

:53:08.:53:11.

have to concentrate. In the end, I think it could rattle me.

:53:12.:53:16.

Yes, it is not easy at times. A huge number of people. And so many people

:53:17.:53:23.

seem to be essential. Microphone holders, cameras, scoreboard. It is

:53:24.:53:26.

difficult to cut the numbers down. But it is difficult.

:53:27.:53:31.

These players are used to it. They play all over the world in front of

:53:32.:53:36.

very big crowds. In a lot of places it is far more

:53:37.:53:48.

chaotic than here. Well more birdie chances here at the

:53:49.:53:53.

fifth, par-5 for Rickie Fowler. What a start.

:53:54.:54:09.

Presumably, Phil, that was his longest iron. He will have the same

:54:10.:54:16.

to the green? Yes, or maybe even a wood of some kind.

:54:17.:54:24.

Huge shoulder turn. And Ron hits from Rickie Fowler. He is only 5ft

:54:25.:54:32.

9. He is basically self-taught. He has been having some help from Butch

:54:33.:54:39.

Harman in the last 18 months. And Garcia has an iron as well.

:54:40.:54:43.

Bunkers at 265 up the right. And Garcia has an iron as well.

:54:44.:55:12.

If you get to move backwards.

:55:13.:55:58.

47 yards. Probably a pitching wedge. He has certainly nipped it.

:55:59.:56:05.

That is what Ken was saying. Aim slightly safer than he did on the

:56:06.:56:09.

first. Make sure you hit the greens. Wait for the par-5s. If you are

:56:10.:56:15.

playing well you will make a scattering of other birdies as well.

:56:16.:56:20.

He is certainly playing well. Looking a little nervous? No. Just

:56:21.:56:25.

coming out of the rough. Not quite the same control. The ball releasing

:56:26.:56:30.

had to be a little more conservative.

:56:31.:56:37.

Yes, the seaside rough is tougher. conservative.

:56:38.:56:45.

Get a couple of stalks and the ball will not cut through. The ball has

:56:46.:56:48.

much less back spin on it. will not cut through. The ball has

:56:49.:57:11.

We talk about the people inside the ropes, the ones

:57:12.:57:14.

We talk about the people inside the there is also a referee and maybe as

:57:15.:57:24.

much as two observers. Well golf continues on the red

:57:25.:57:29.

button for the next ten minutes. We have to tear ourselves away. There

:57:30.:57:33.

is a news update coming here on BBC One. That is the news from the golf.

:57:34.:57:39.

The four-shot cushion has become a two-shot cushion for Rory McIlroy.

:57:40.:57:43.

We will return in about ten minutes. But there has been much happening

:57:44.:57:48.

this morning at Royal Liverpool on the third day of the 143ished Royal

:57:49.:57:54.

Military Police championship. If you are joining us, you will see that

:57:55.:57:59.

the leaders are out more early than they may have been as they are

:58:00.:58:04.

playing a two-tee start. And using the 10th hole for the first time in

:58:05.:58:08.

history on this great championship. So an unusual day here. We are back

:58:09.:58:15.

to share coverage in about ten minutes' time. Unless, of course the

:58:16.:58:19.

weather intervenes. But so far, so good.

:58:20.:58:21.

We catch you shortly. Goodbye for now.
