Day 3 Golf: Women's British Open

# Staying out for the summer. Hello. The way this golfing summer

has gone, we were expecting to be blown all washed away on the east

coast of Scotland. The men have affronted here at Carnoustie on

seven previous occasions to tackle what is normally one of the wildest,

roughest and most rugged rides on the Open Championship rota. But

this is the debut for the Ricoh Women's British Open, and the

conditions and the courts have been on best behaviour. The players have

responded in wonderfully a unladylike fashion, by tearing the

place apart. Des two, a day which finished with

Caroline Masson of Germany out in front.

On the east coast of Scotland, the Far East challenge has been rising.

Already a Major champion, Park devoured the birdies.

First-round leader Meena Lee crept along at the tail off the field.

She made few mistakes. The godmother of Korean Golf Se Ri Pak

also devoured the course. She won a decade ago.

Younger ones inspired by her followed her lead, Na Li and Choi,

one of six Koreans inside the top 20 at the halfway stage. Everyone

heard the loud footsteps of world number 1 Ya-Ni Tseng. Mika Miyazato

of Japan got off to a flyer. She would lie just five off the pace.

Five birdies and an eagle for Sri It was a day when some had to wait

but did not mind too much. Brittany Lincicome led to the American

attack. What a day of surprises yesterday,

or more especially an evening of surprises. At about 8pm, 22 year-

old Caroline Masson from Germany had leapfrogged the entire field as

she carded a seven-under-par round she carded a seven-under-par round

with us. The field at the start of the day was separated by 12 shots.

than 100 in the world, she has than 100 in the world, she has

never won a table or held a halfway lead. If this was nervous, it

Kaymer. -- the former men's number one. By the 5th, she was enjoying

it. This was an eagle attempt. It just rolled by. But she picked up

breeze to factor in, perhaps, about 10 or 15 mph. They have tightened

the pin positions, which has been reflected in the scoring, a little

bit more conservative than in the last couple of days. Our commentary

In-Bee Park playing a second to the 7th, things have not gone her way

today. Caroline Masson is on the greens in. After a shaky first hole

she has really gone to town. has really impressed me with her

iron play, great iron into second and into five. She had an eagle

attempt on a nice iron shot at seven, so look out for some good

iron shops from her. -- iron shots. Catriona Matthew is making steady

progress at the 13th. She is rolling the ball beautifully on the

greens. Such true surfaces. It will not take any nervous energy away

from her. playing very long and the wind has

not come up, there are enough obstacles to get your attention.

This is the young Dutch player Dewi Claire Schreefel. She has not had a

very good start today, four bogeys, she has picked one up at the 6th,

the young Dutch woman. Well, there is Ya-Ni Tseng, playing

alongside Mika Miyazato for the third consecutive day. Ken Brown is

in their company. It is nice here, it has freshened

since first thing, I would say temperatures are in the mid-60s

with a light breeze. Ya-Ni Tseng takes the course out of the driver

with some beautiful tea shops. -- right at the target. A beautiful

shot. It has been a busy period for golf.

We have had the English Amateur being played on the world own

course. -- Woburn course. There has been a real feast of course this

weekend, and now here we are at she wanted. A little bit further

away than I thought. We have got Birthdays today. Graeme

McDowell is 32, Justin Rose is 31. Hands up those who remember Justin

Rose, almost winning the Championship when he was 12 or 13!

strange little chip shots around birdie at seven. Dribbled away.

Almost perfect conditions for golf. Good light, it makes quite a

difference. Helps you to judge the distance.

Sophie Gustafson is on 13th. A store water of the cup teams. -- a

An interesting situation the last time Caroline had a putt of this

nicely holed. She looks very cool and calm, considering she does not

have a lot of experience, Maureen? She has only been professional for

19 months. Meena Lee has left herself one of a similar length.

This is for par at eight. She dropped back a little bit after

leading on the first day. She has had a couple of wins and Top tens

she'll be eight-under-par. Good strike, no, drifting. It slowed up.

It hasn't quite got the pace on these greens. Don't ask me why. I

don't know why don't putt better. I don't know why they don't play

snooker or darts better. Seemingly there is no great power needed.

They strike the ball well, but they don't putt very well, not

consistently well. I can't think why. Putting is all about touch and

feel. It should be no different for men than for ladies. Maybe strength

is in there somewhere. I'm not sure where it is. This is for a par. She

was out in 36, one birdie and one bogey. Playing neat and tidy golf.

Different from her partner, who A good putt. We haven't seen many

putts holed. Level par for today. Off they stride. They seem to walk

at a great pace these women, yet they still take as long as the men

to go round. It's turned into a gorgeous day, pretty much as good

as yesterday was. I couldn't imagine getting any better on a

links course in Scotland. Caroline careful. This graen green is like

an up turned saucer. We saw that happen to Yani Tseng half an hour

ago. She had a second guess, which is a thoroughly professional thing

to do. It's easy to hit when your mind isn't on it, you haven't quite

choosen the line, invair pliibly you miss it. It's up the hill. If

you hit it with any power at all, left edge. She has had two perfect

shots here. She deserves a birdie. Golf is not like that. She looks

like the player to beat, doesn't she? Especially if Masson has a

wobble, not being used to the situation. Very impressive. I think

Masson is very impressive. Everyone has to start winning some time. You

know, no reason why she can't go on an eight-iron for her tee shot on

the pathway. Lazy swing. Oh, steady! It looks like concrete this

green, the way it goes. Not a million miles away from the out of

bound fence. See the post. If you are between those bunkers, miss the

green there, swept away and out-of- Incidentally, many of you will

remember Beverley Lewis, who was with the BBC, she used to be a

Fairway correspondent for many years, she is here working. She

said it was a great day at Thornton Park, the lady's captain there is

Jill Mass. A few months ago she was captain of the Professional Golfers

rascal. Her husband built a boat. Your old man built a bode boat, in

his garage. He took it out on the water. And it floated. Matthew

golf course, the 14th and 4th share the first shot in this championship,

back on Thursday. She's had a bit of an up-and-down day, a few

won the Tour School last September and has won four times since. There

is her twin sister on the bag. Inbee Park choosing to putt like

most players do. Come over the huge bank and leveling out. Struggling

around the greens today in a big way. We have to say, with the

kindest tongue in the world, that was a bit clumsy, really, really,

that was no touch at all. Very third shot. She's playing alongside

surface. History not repeating itself. A good, fine third shot. A

great chance of birdie. Masson, up- and-over the hill on. That is a

better pace. Caroline Masson played in the 2007 Junior Solvine Cup.

Head well was one of her players then. She jumped up aund and down,

damaged her ankle. Couldn't play and the head well twin was called

in to play. She holed the winning putt. That is almost fairytale

stuff. Amazing. We do have a bit of excitement on occasion. Choi at the

from the front of the green, what a tee shot, par 4. They are making a

mockery of the course. The way it's set up, the old ladies teeth have

been taken away, they are in the glass by the bedside. They are not

showing up on the course over the past three days. Can she get this

back on the green? She can. It wasn't a bad looking tee shot. When

she struck it she must have thought, that's all right. We could be

looking at a five here. Sophie Gustafson. Failing to save par. The

par 3s are treacherous at Carnoustie. They can certainly bump

the score card up. Gustafson goes to six under. To the 14th. Catriona

Looks to be a good pace. Pretty good. She putted that from out of

is one where you feel it's gone off like a gun in your hand. That's a

very dissatisfying double. Drops her back down to six under, seven

this week. That's tied for second. Catriona Matthew is one of the

players who goes about herpes. You look over your shoulder and, wow,

bang, there she is. Up into second. Still that five shot gap there. The

young German coping well with the pressure of being the leader in

this third round of this Women's dropped one stroke on the opening

hole. We had four birdies. Good playing. Na Yeon Choi, leading

money within winner in the LPGA last year. I think that had a lot

days. He has had a pacemaker fitted. He said, do you think I am mad? He

answered his own question and said, I am, but I will do my best for the

kids. Good luck to him. Raising money for the only a hospice in

Dorset for children who, sadly, will not be with us for much longer.

nine-iron as well. Masson looks entirely untroubled by her

right hand side. The 17th has shot sim -- similar to Caroline

Masson. It's not easy. Also a nine- iron. Also, very good. Very good

of the golf course. This is as far out as you can get from the Club

lost all feel around the greens. It set her back in a big way. A nice

birdie on nine. She'd love to roll this one in with another birdie on

is holding her head up so far. Just fascinating how everybody has to

play to their own strength, and she can't overpower this hole like her

playing companion. Ya-Ni Tseng hit position off the tee. She looks

bunker with some landing area. That was too risky. A safety first shot.

She looked fairly unhappy with that, but you see the difference. Two

Catriona Matthew leads the home challenge. Brittany Lang leads the

have been better? Yes, I've played phenomenally today. I played really

well. 3-under at a British Open, pretty happy. It has been a while

since you have contended at the sharp end, what is the difference?

My mind has been really sharp, I have been hitting the ball great, I

have worked on my technique which has allowed me to be there with my

mind. It appears a beautiful day, the wind has freshened, but is it

more difficult than the last couple of days? The scores are more

conservative? Really? I would say it is playing easier because it is

warm, the ball was travelling, it is pretty warm, pretty benign.

There is not a lot of breeze. Here is the American Cup captain,

the way you would hope the players would play, it is playing very

tough today, the scores are not as good as the last couple of days,

Gicquel Bataan -- Gicquel-Bettan is down there with an eagle putt. But

seven professional wins have come in different countries, a real

seven on the list, they have been having a hard time getting their

points. I am having to measure their success in different ways. A

couple of them are playing well this week. We have had a little bit

of action from the bottom players, but you can only just see the

conductor! She is a long, long way from the cup. An extra-long pin at

14 so the players can see it from the fairway. It is about 35 yards.

A little ridge to come up and over, then it turns. If this goes in it

chasing you down, Ya-Ni Tseng will be a tough competitor tomorrow.

Caroline has her work cut out even with the lead that she has. This is

very good. Oh, marvellous! Ya-Ni will hear the roar.

That has something else. The crowd loved it, she loved it. -- that was

something else. 30 paces, around 90 feet. Right across the green, not a

huge amount of break, but for the distance it was inch perfect. Rosie,

when you hear the roar, Masson will hear that, she will know that

something has happened and she will see the score. That will be

unsettling. That is not the sound you want to hear when you have the

it ended up being. One of the great things that was said early on when

I was chosen to be captain, we just steered the ship and let the

players battle it out. They are doing that as they tried to make

their qualification. -- as they try to make their qualification.

Paula has been having a great year, looking for a big win but she has

Sophie Giquel-Bettan tee shot. She's in bounds, Giquel-Bettan.

Catriona Matthew is sailing along nicely. Champion two years ago, who

do. I love to come over here. I have brought a couple of groups of

Americans to come over to play, amateur players. We played

Carnoustie a couple of years ago. We enjoy playing out here on the

links golf course. It was a lot of fun. 28 Top 10s and Majors. I have

counted them? I've never counted them, it sounds pretty good. Thank

I'm very impressed with the amount of distance they can generate from

a very slim frame, wide arc. Here's Creamer, at the 17th. Beautiful

line is quite easy to see, but it is a little uphill. Very easy to

miss this on the left. It is not the lion that is hard to ascertain,
