Day 3 Golf: Women's British Open

Good afternoon. We are coming to the tail end of the third round in

this ree Coe women's British Open championship from Carnoustie. It's

the fourth and final Major of the women's game of the year. It's a

beautiful evening here on the East beautiful evening here on the East

Coast of Scotland. Sparkling performance too from Caroline

Masson from Germany. She is a 22- year-old who has never led at this

point in a championship before, at any championship, never mind a

Major. After a wobbley start in which she pushed her tee shot and

made bod bogey on the first she has begun to reestablish control.

Composed with a mature performance. A three shot lead over Yani Tseng

with Catriona Matthew from Scotland in hot pursuit. Straight back out

on to the course. Thank you, it's coming to a close. Here is Tseng at

the 17th, welcome back Maureen. Another rescue club. It's been an

absolutely terrific performance of shot making by Yani Tseng. This one

just moving down on to the putting surface. Magnificent eagle on 14. A

delight to watch. She certainly played super shots today. There

were moments, in the first nine, when she was shakey. She kept

getting pars, they were shaking player ks use the contours of the

green and bring it in round from the left. The right hand is off the

club straightaway. Nearly got away with it. Yes. If it had missed the

bunker that would have gone racing through the back of the green. She

has an awkward shot left. On the 17th, another putt from long range,

players hitting driver. Loads of them hitting three-woods. That was

a birdie for Choi, not many of those there. Inbee Park not had the

happiest days in this final group. 8 over for the championship. Seven

adrift of Caroline Masson, playing pack. Safely on the 17th, par-5 in

many good shots and general shots into the green. Birdie opportunity

at 15. Maybe move a fraction from the left. If this one goes in she

has a four shot lead, yet again. that one fooled her, it fooled me

as well, it really went away. A good 18 inches at the end. I think

Doug Sander woos have approved of all the shoes we see now. All the

colours, orange shoes, all sorts. Well, he was one of the people who

first started that colourful attire. in Max Faulkner, of course, won the

Open Championship in 1951. Look at shouldn't have had that second bot

golf, they just slide past. She's been heavy-handed around the greens.

She has been unlucky on a couple of occasions. Not able to get the pace,

the chip or the putts. Got to carry it all on to the green. She's done

exceptionally well. Super shot. Found the up slope, landed it in

on. Comes from just outside Dusseldorf. Fine golf courses on

the continent, which not many people from this country go and

visit and play, I don't know why, they all rush off to southern Spain,

I suppose, hoping for the sunshine. Holland, Denmark, Germany, France,

they have delightful courses, particularly in France. There is

hardly anybody there. That's how they stand as we come to the close

have been in the 0s, less than a handful. Yani Tseng has hit the

ball, tucked behind the bunker. As good a spot as any she can get from

the fairway. She can't, can she, not another eagle? She might do.

I've seen longer ones than this hole. Shorter ones missed. Tell you

what, she got the line. May have tailed away at the end. It

certainly wasn't too bad. If she knock that is in, it will be

another birdie, a fore. Caroline Hedwall has gone backwards. She

shot. I think the run-off is down from these slightly elevated greens

into the hallows ads --ads to the difficulty of this course. Just by

tiptoeing off the green leaves you a difficult shot from tight grass,

do I putt it, chip it or do I run her this. Solid putt. Solid putt,

indeed. That's another birdie on the cards. She moves to 7-under.

Grinding out a good round. She must feel she's playing a completely

different course from Yani Tseng. Interesting to see how they each

craft their way around this great Links. Always trying to pick the

shots that suit the strengths of down to two. Yani Tseng moves to

13--under-par. She's four ahead of third place, Catriona Matthew at

the moment. These two beginning to put daylight between themselves and

18th, a short walk across. On the green, Hedwall, who putted from off

the back of this green. This for a par-4. Oh... No. Thought it was

there. A little bit steamy. A little bit firm. She's had an

untidy back nine, four boggies. She will have five bogeys in the back

16th, incredibly difficult par-3, such a narrow target. Anywhere on

this green with suffice. If you get the front of the green you leave

yourself a 35 yard putt, that is beautifully. That's a very, very

fine shot. Hole playing 237 yards today. The hardest ranked hole on

the golf course this week. I think she's been very impressive today.

Young player, never been in this position before. Way ward drive on

the first,. She has fought back well. Hedwall, on the other hand,

has dropped back. She hit the first shot on Thursday morning. Winner

four times on the Tour this year. She is a cracking girl from Sweden.

Unhappy inward nine holes for her today, 76. Inbee Park who has been,

generally, outdriving Masson, deciding she needs a three-wood to

get there. It's a powerful club. Her swing rather reminds me of Tom

Lay Mann, draw it is back slowly and whack it is with his arms.

Beautiful shot. Very good shot. Stay up. Choi on 17. Perfectly

there. As Andrew rejoins us, I bet he will tell us it's always like

that in Scotland? No, it's not, it usually rains. It makes us the

people we are. It's lovely to have you back again, Andrew. It's quite

dry over here most of the time, Carnoustie, the East Coast. Not

always like this. Very rare to have no wind. That's the thing. We are

promised some, a bit more of a breeze Thompson, which will make

things very interesting. I'm sure people who visit for the first time

from far away can hardly believe how the weather can change from

right, she boomed it up here her opening two-days. The bunker on the

right has been popular. Boy, she didn't hold back on that one.

Touch-and-go. She's passed it. as yesterday. Exactly the same spot.

right hand bunker. She will have to hit her Sunday best to do that. Oh,

oh. It clawed its way forward. That may not be too bad. It may even be

in a position to have a cut at the green from there, otherwise it's

just pitch out. As we come back, you watch where he is now and see

how far it is, 10, 12, 14 foot little stream that winds in front

of this green. Here's one at 17 for Choi. Pretty close to the face.

Looks to be on an up slope, it helps. Really needs to get this up

struggling, but not show it -- not that was a very good shot but the

number 1 today. A bit of a struggle at some of the other holes, but the

second nine was fantastic. Lovely German has played to have doubled

her lead from the start so far. She will have a two shot lead tomorrow

if she carries on and finish is no the way up. A little uphill,

friends. You would not have wanted to give some of the caddies that I

had as a young boy a cuddle! It is this eagle. This could bring her

birdies now on the back nine. Tying round one, but not enjoying such

good fortune today. Eight on 14, sideways. The difficulty when you

do this is that you can't have fancied forward. If you turn it too

hard it might scoop through on the other side. It is all right now. It

looked like it was going to grab on get close to today, but that is its

only defence as a par five. Just three games left on the course.

The flag is just tucked behind the bunkers on the right-hand side. The

better. Ideal. From this angle, if she can have the ball tailing with

a little frayed, it could feed down. It is possible to get there, but it

needs an amazing shot. What sort of iron is this? I don't believe this

is only a five-iron, I presume she is planning on landing it short.

few times today. Caroline has had a terrific run of

form this year. This is a great performance but not entirely

unexpected. She has had six top 11s so far this season. Only the one

tee shot, like that, with two such quality shots? It it shows you what

can happen. It doesn't always happen, but it's possible. At least

you give yourself a chance. If you are too bold and choose the wrong

line of attack or wrong shot you could run up a six or a seven, or

Netherlands who, I am sure, is enjoying her visit here. Ricoh, the

hotel, of course, just behind the green. Some other lovely courses

within, five, six, seven, eight miles. A good spot to come for your

golf. A bit of a beach there. No- one has actually swam in that sea

since about 1963, but it's there to play with the kids on the beach. I

tell a fib. They were dragging people in with sun burn yesterday

with a four, Andrew? What do you think? That would be a warm

aploughs for that? Certainly would. The third shot alone, the second

shot wasn't too back hacking out of this. Schreefel nice to see her

finish with a three. She does a lot of work with Team Holland. A very

good support system in the trousers full of leg. I think it

sums up. There's not much spare material in there. Good strong legs.

You need strong legs for this. say that the secret of good golf is

good underpinning. My dad said that, good legs are the foundation.

suddenly realised why I'm so bad. Now then, Caroline Masson a putt

loves it. Somebody on the phone. Have you noticed, always somebody

on the phone now. Where ever you go, they are either talking to somebody

or twittering somebody. The more you twitter, the more you can get

into trouble. That is something you learn when you get older. Why

anybody would want to constituent certificate beyond my

comprehension., "I'm going to Tesco's when I've eaten my

breakfast. I am Rae walking down the street. There is a doggy". Two

putts will be pretty great. Look out! A little left. Doesn't she

look unroughleed? I think she looks wonderful. Martin Kymer, I have

watched him for all his career. He has a calmness about him, great

skill. This girl is in the same mould. They have the same@lethic

look about them, a calmness about them. That's good. You see, it

could be dissipated on this final hole, if she's not careful. Let's

see if Schreefel can finish with a 1, signs and signs. Good crowds

will give her as much pleasure as any birdie. And, that is course

today. She's treading water. 8- under-par. What an escape at the

is pitching out. It's Meena Lee. Yes, it's a tough tee shot here on

1. It's a narrow neck of fairway to get through. If you go adrift, you

really can't get on in two. A touch hand corner. A bit of relief there.

It's a 74. Unhappy start, but she hung in there well. First time in

her young professional career in this atmosphere of going out so

late in a Major championship. Netherlands have a great history of

golf. They have been playing there since, it's nip and tuck who

started first whether it was the next three-and-a-half weeks before

the side is announced. An important tee shot here for our young leader.

Just waiting for Se Ri Pak to move up the player. It happens a lot in

I've seen a lot of people down Masson, she started off today a

little nervey with that opening tee shot and miss from three feet at

the first hole. Cincinnati then, she really has hardly missed a shot.

It's been wonderful to watch. She's been calm. Talking to her caddy, a

smile on her face. Almost as though she's done it her whole life. One

more tee shot left. Down the middle. Trouble right, trouble left. She

has to nail this one. Nothing else right up there on the leaderboard,

now tumbled back down as 2 understood. Inbee Park, slow

delivery. The tee has picked up fairly smartly. The ball is going

down the middle. Two fine tee shots The final pair coming down the last

hole. Let's hear from Yani Tseng. What a back nine, six under for the

last nine holes, home in 30 blows. How did you turn that around?

feels really good. I had a great second shot and made the putt. Very

exciting. The Eagle at 14, how long was that putt? It was 23 yards. I

was, like I haven't putted like this for a long time. On this

course that is a great putt. I'm very excited. I see the ball. I

ride that straight in the hole. There were two or three putt that

is got away. It could have been better today? It's OK. I try my

best at every putt and every shot too. I still feel this is a great

tomorrow. Some defence of your title. Last time around you were

four shots ahead going into the final day. You find yourself in

pursuit. How different is the feeling this time around? I feel I

have no pressure. I'm going to be aggressive and enjoy tomorrow.

Maybe two or three shots back. On this golf course and this weather

you never know. What do you know about Caroline Masson? Have you

heard about her before or seen her play before? No. I know she's on

the European Tour. I'm looking forward. You will be in your

crowds here. They have started off looking like an expedition to the

Antarctic but they have stripped down. Now they have clothed up

again. It's a shame we didn't have more British interest, but there we

are. Final putt we hope for Meena Lee, as the shadows lengthen. And,

well done. Well done, it's a sad 80, out in 40, home in 40. One to learn

36 holes that she, well, she got off to a shakey start and just kept

Ri Pak finishes out. The winds are a little bit across on this hole.

It's not really helping. It's straight across from the right hand

side. Se Ri Pak missed the green, came up to here. She really did set

the world on fire. As you were saying earlier, Maureen, there was

a player from Korea that had won a tournament well before her. She was

overshadowed by the Olympic games. When this girl started to win the

Majors, the whole of Korea went barmy? She opened the floodgates

and is a Hall of Fameer. Look at that. Great to sepak Pak back

playing well, enjoying her golf as much as she is. Shakey first nine

holes. A nice controlled second. A long way back. The breeze

freshening in the -- from the right. She has gone with a four-iron. She

needs to catch every single bit of of the bunker. Not too difficult

from there, under normal circumstances. But with the flag

middle of the green and out-of- bounds 15 yards or so beyond, it

can affect the way you play your it makes if you can get the drive

away and get a good, long straight 14 stop so much easier to come into

this green with a 7, 8 or 9-iron as opposed to a four.

If you are just coming in, let remind you of Caroline Masson's day.

She dropped a shot at the first and looked very nervous but immediately

recovered her composure to regain her place at 11-under par. She has

been working with her coach, who also coaches the Martin Kaymer. She

was certainly in great ball- striking form. She went well fund

at Fifth. Eagle putt chance at the 6th, it just slipped by. All the

while, the gap between her and the rest was getting yard -- getting

larger. Ya-Ni Tseng was on her toes as she popped back into go 14-under.

A lovely par save was here. She is so solid and has worked on her

composure and dump it in bad shots behind her. This was the par saved

on 14th, a very big moment. The eagle chance at the 17th. You have

to take advantage here. She missed, but a tap-in birdie, 16-under par

and a three-shot lead for the 22 year-old from Dusseldorf, who has

never led an event. That has changed - and how?!

I think she has done quite well hear. She has gone completely into

the bunker, she has a decent stance. It could have been so much worse,

more tucked under the lip, but she has a decent opportunity of saving

par. I have the feeling she might go a

bit deeper on this one and leave it well short. Because the great fear

is getting the club to near the ball, getting its a bit clean. It

would be very easy to skim this one out of play. I would not be

surprised if this is at least 15 feet short. She has played quite

beautifully today. Two would be lovely, but five would not be the

sand and hit that very hard. She has only five or six paces. Very

easy to take three more from their. moment. Caroline Masson is still at

the top. Quite an achievement. She has been held up by the rest of the

field by the entire day. She had a lot of runs from various players

but she has repelled them all. As Peter was saying, she has coped

admirably with everything. Her composure has been wonderful.

I think I was just as surprised with that bunker shot as anyone

else. Out of bounds, just behind the green, being as aggressive as

she was. It gives a good indication of how positive she has been all

get there with a four-iron and hit it as hard as she could. She came

out of it, that is what really putts today, it is not out of the

question that this could going. She would love it if it did, it would

round off a very nice day. Yesterday she was in the

penultimate match, she finished at 8:30pm with 65. In many ways she

had a luxury are finishing without too many people around, no cameras,

crowds, galleries, intake of breath. This is a completely different

second. Only an 8-iron for her. the tee she has been magnificent,

but certainly earlier on she wasted probably four shots around the

green from doing strange trick shots, putting from one side of the

green to the above. This would be a nice way to finish, with a birdie.

-- from one side of the green to the other. In that she does! That

is a closing birdie, birdie finish for Inbee Park on 73. Caroline

Masson opened with a bogey, and she would be quite satisfied to close

stop -- on this one. If she was to miss this, she would feel that she

had undone much of the work she has done over the last three-and-a-half

hours or so. She would still be ahead. This is for five. Very well

done. Very good playing indeed from the young German. She will be in
