Day 4 Golf: Women's British Open

golf, during -- playing an adjournment or not playing in

tournaments, it is exciting. It was gives me a tingle. He has got it.

And that settles it. Then he is, the greatest golfer of the game has ever

known. To walk the fairways that some of the greatest players in golf

have been on, is amazing. This 483. -- for a three. Did you enjoy that?

For any golfer who knows anything about golf and the history, this is

the place you want to come and play. The champion golfer for the year and

the women -- winner of the gold medal with a score of 282, John

Daly. Yes. There it is. That is a 74 Tiger Woods. He is a champion, and

well-deserved. How fitting that it should be the women's world number

one going down in history as the first winner of a women's

professional event on this course. If a win this week, it will be so

special, especially at St Andrews, this historic golf course. There

really is nowhere else like it in golf. St Andrews, the home of the

sport, where many of the greats the game and made their mark. The Open

Championship has been staged here 28 times, a record 28 times and this is

only the second time in history that the best women golfers in the world

have tackled this famous course. Indeed, this is the trophy that they

are playing for. The elegant lines of the silver trophy which bears

more than a passing nod to the old Claret Jug itself. I say testing

themselves on The Old Course and that is what has been happening.

They were probably with us yesterday because the third round was

abandoned at 12:30pm with quite a few players still out on the

course. Indeed, our leaders were still to go out. For the second year

in a row, this great Championship is heading for a marathon final day

with 86 holes to be completed by many of the leading players. We

started the week with more than a passing nod to the great Inbee Park

of Korea. Could she be the woman to become the first fresh and golfer,

male or female, to win four Major titles in the same year? -- first

female golfer. Andrew Cotter reflects on the first few days.

It all began with all the attention on Inbee Park. To boldly go where no

player has gone before and win four professional Majors in the same

year. It seemed possible after the opening round, even with two shots

going in the 16th a 69 was a good start. It is a fine opening round by

Inbee Park. Choosing a fourth consecutive Major. But the American

challenge was strong. Who better to do so than the world number two,

Stacey Lewis, working her way around in 67. That is the way to do it. And

Morgan Pressel went one better, sharing lead with the late finisher

from Sweden. And it was a strong close from Catriona Matthew, the

2009 champion, with birdies on the 17th and 18th. Well cold.-- cold.

Round two, and once more things were benign. A sexy sex was waiting. Two

Eagles came in the front nine. -- 66. The slight figure of 19 -- MA

Yeon Choi sailed into a one-shot lead with an impressive 5-under par.

Go on. And it did. Wind assisted. That score was found by Jee Young

Lee and Suzann Pettersson. But Inbee Park fell foul of the draw. And the

dream of four Majors was lifting away. Then the wind blew so hard

that it led to the day out of the week. Saturday disappeared and it

was all to be done on Sunday instead. A long day, an early start

beginning with a sandstorm. Meanwhile, there was a charge from

Catriona Matthew. How to better her birdie birdie finish of the first

day? She found a way on the 18th. And suddenly there was a thought

that the winner would come not from the East or west, from closer to

home. But it was the Americans who would lead going into the final

round. Stacy Lewis old lead two of the last three are still sneaked

under 70. -- bogeyed. And Morgan Pressel, the youngest ever to win a

Major six years ago. Now at The Old Course imposition to win again.

Then four at 7-under, including MA Yeon Choi and Suzann Pettersson. But

the most startling move was made by Catriona Matthew, the last non-Asian

winner of this title, beginning the third round eight shots off the pace

and finding herself only three behind after that superb round of

68. As for Inbee Park, a 74 this morning put level for the

Championship and nine shots behind Morgan Pressel. Grand Slam ambitions

are hanging by a fins -- thin thread. It could be quite an

afternoon but here is how our afternoon but here is how our

was a nightmare. Every bunker was not a good life. -- good life. It

was not easy and there but I'd have to go one more around, so why will

and they feel good about the round. 69, write in touch. A couple of

slips, but how do you view your position? Overall, eyeshot even par

on the back nine. 17 is basically par-5 today. Do not feel like those

bookies will hurt me. -- I do not feel like those bogeys will hurt me.

I've got a couple of hours to rest up. You have to think so much over

every shot so by the end of the day, I do not know I will be thinking.

Have a team or bowls of some intense focus and they should be OK. Ash I

have 18 or more holes. I wonder if the vibes are returning? is -- gave

myself a really good chance and it felt good to be back in contention.

Especially at such a special place, Saint Andrews. I am playing well. As

for conditions, it is going to be very breezy again. Nothing like the

wind speed that we experienced yesterday. Gusts of up to 25 mph by

mid-afternoon. This is once again going to be a real test of patience

and nerve. There has been time to cut new pin positions for the final

round. You might remember that Ken was almost blown into the yesterday

at the far end of the course full stop they will be out on the course

again this afternoon but right now he is surveying the scene from on

high will stop --. This must be the best view of the house -- in the

house. It looks magnificent from here.

There is the beach where the kids are playing with their dogs and the

beachball. And the RNA clubhouse with a make up the rules of the

will be delighted. Of course, trying to win on the old course is nothing

like it. Just have a look at that. I cannot wait to get out there. And

neither can we. It has been a long day for

everybody, as you heard. The players and officials have been up since

before dawn. With this 36 hole finish, there has been no time to

redraw the field so the pairings will be exactly as they were at the

start of the third round. And that means that the winner might emerge

from way down the field. We will have to keep a close watch on how

things are developing. It promises to be pretty exciting. But it

whose company they will be playing. The world number two, Stacy Lewis,

the last non-Asian winner of a Major two and a half years ago. She was 15

minutes after the lights -- after the likes of Catriona Matthew. In

high noon and things looked OK for Katrina Matthew. She started three

shots off the pace. Unfortunately, there was a bogey on the third and a

triple at the fifth. That knocked off centre. There was a birdie four

her, on the ninth. 3-under at that point. Five shots off the pace.

Let's confirm the situation as it stands. The is a bit of movement,

not much of it forward, it has to be said. Morgan Pressel has dropped a

shot at the second. She finds herself 1-over after two calls. She

still leads by one. Hee Young Park has made a move, steady through two

calls. Stacy Lewis, also, 2-over for her round. Further down, Catriona

Matthew, still in touch. She has an awful what to do on the last nine

holes. So where will the winner come from? We suspect it is probably not

going to be any of these players. Cristie Kerr has had the best round

of the day, the double Major winner from America. Home with 3-under par.

Good playing from her. Also, always a fearsome contender. Part of the

Solheim cup team for America. Those teams will be announced at the close

of play. Let's get out there, shall we? There is a lot to be decided.

Here is our leader, Morgan Pressel. With a birdie putt. 8-under, just

one ahead. By fancy that will be plenty of drama this afternoon. The

be a real challenge. To win a Major is brilliant but to win a Major on

The Old Course, you are a legend. Many things to be looked at today

but someone will be the champ. It could be Suzann Pettersson. This

close, as close as possible as you can it sounds daft to say that, but

leaderboards and be able to interpret her position and be

aggressive. So she owes a lot to Nancy Lopez. And here she is.

1930s, the wind was so strong and the grass so sparse that Denny

a very strategic position! Unsighted to the pin. She has got 86 to the

front but 163 to the pin, it is on 77. The wind is whistling from the

left. Very difficult to get the ball back there. Any balls you see

wandering onto the green have come from the 13th, and that is why it is

feet. Very top.If it were a flaccid is, you would not think anything of

it, it is a reasonable little pitch. -- if it were a flat surface.

feisty competitor. Those last six years she has finished inside the

top ten on the money list this. -- list. Along with Catriona Matthew,

she will be one of the senior members of the European cup team.

And there is the woman of the week. She has the most pressure on her

shoulders. She is not going to manage to pull off four in a

calendar year. But as you were saying earlier in the week, what an

experienced it has been simply to come here and have the opportunity

to make history, to take that step that nobody has taken before. Nobody

had ever been in this position in the game, male or female. A long
