and warm and the breezes sweeping in from the Irish Sea were nice. But

:00:00.:00:41.

this was a tough task. Only nine players broke par and the narrow

:00:42.:00:47.

fairways and thick rope broke a few hearts along the way amongst those

:00:48.:00:51.

harbouring hopes of lifting this, the beautiful 21st-century styled

:00:52.:00:59.

women's claret jug. A fascinating day at Royal Birkdale for the first

:01:00.:01:05.

day and the top names of ladies golf were blessed with a glorious

:01:06.:01:20.

Thursday. Leading was Japan's a Yacob O'Hara. Mo Martin finished

:01:21.:01:29.

three under and in second place. What a superb shot that was. Then

:01:30.:01:33.

three names all on two under par and type of bird. This is a good links

:01:34.:01:52.

shot for you. The sun it's hat on all day, even if the officials

:01:53.:01:55.

couldn't. Some players went to extreme lengths to keep fares on.

:01:56.:02:02.

Leading the British charge was Holly Clyburn, shooting one under par.

:02:03.:02:07.

Matching that of last year's champion, world number one, Stacy

:02:08.:02:17.

Lewis. Look at this! Teenager Charlie Harle is still in contention

:02:18.:02:21.

at one over. Absolutely glorious shots. Laura Davies found it hard

:02:22.:02:30.

going. She finished three over alongside the world number 12. At

:02:31.:02:39.

the end of 12.5 hours of golf, this is how the leaderboard looked.

:02:40.:02:49.

Mo Martin, statistically the most accurate off the tee. Amongst the

:02:50.:03:01.

other seven women who broke part was Morgan pretzel. Stacy Lewis and the

:03:02.:03:24.

top Briton, Holly Clyburn. There is a leading scrap for the leading

:03:25.:03:29.

amateur. Some big named professionals have work to do to

:03:30.:03:33.

make sure they are the right side of the cot when it falls this evening.

:03:34.:03:39.

Dame Laura Davies shot an opening 75. She is in the company of Jessica

:03:40.:03:53.

Corder. I Myers at Ogata underway this morning. We will be keeping an

:03:54.:03:57.

eye on the two-time champion in this event, Sinn.

:03:58.:04:09.

Once again it was an early start. 6:30am and conditions are very

:04:10.:04:17.

friendly. Light winds, sunshine, who will make hay today? This is where

:04:18.:04:24.

we will pick up late today. Not a great deal of movement.

:04:25.:04:37.

Let's get out onto the Royal Birkdale will

:04:38.:04:43.

it is a very placid looking links when you view it from here but it

:04:44.:04:55.

was at via -- fierce test yesterday. Frisky breeze today. But looking at

:04:56.:05:01.

the pin positions, the flags are in a more friendly position. We will

:05:02.:05:10.

maybe get more than nine players breaking par. This is our first look

:05:11.:05:18.

today at Dame Jessica Davies -- Dame Laura Davies. Successful member last

:05:19.:05:34.

August. Just spoiling the card a little bit after a good comeback

:05:35.:05:38.

with a couple of birdies on 13 and 15. Pretty much ideal scoring

:05:39.:05:46.

conditions out here today. The players in the morning part of the

:05:47.:05:49.

draw need to go out and take advantage like Dame Laura. This for

:05:50.:05:55.

a birdie trying to get to three over par. Should be easily inside the cut

:05:56.:06:09.

line at the end of the day. Laura looks like she is walking better

:06:10.:06:13.

than she was yesterday. She has a very painful heel. It is a condition

:06:14.:06:22.

she cannot pronounce the name of, she just knows it is very, very

:06:23.:06:29.

painful. This is her 30th consecutive British Open

:06:30.:06:34.

championship. Not counting the four she played as an amateur. Well done.

:06:35.:06:43.

Laura has had a tendency over the last few years to shoot herself out

:06:44.:06:46.

of contention with some big numbers at this championship. But things

:06:47.:06:56.

looking good for the weekend. Paula creamer for a par at the 14th. Ken

:06:57.:07:06.

Brown is out following this group. I am sure you are enjoying being out

:07:07.:07:13.

there? Absolute delight. Flags are almost limp at the moment so ideal

:07:14.:07:17.

conditions. Greens are a little fast. ' last night. They are pretty

:07:18.:07:32.

slippery. Three bogeys and two birdies. She is currently at five

:07:33.:07:44.

over. Jessica, ahead on 16. An opportunity spurned. Lydia also

:07:45.:08:04.

caught out by the pace. Has this to save a par. 14th, par three.

:08:05.:08:13.

Good-looking card, but managed to have a triple bogey at number eight.

:08:14.:08:24.

Now she has steadied the ship. Well done.

:08:25.:08:33.

Tremendous calmness about Lydia in everything she does. Sometimes we

:08:34.:08:45.

take it for granted she is 17. But when you look at what she has

:08:46.:08:49.

achieved in the game, it is remarkable. Michelle way out on the

:08:50.:08:54.

pack your screen. Her training aid which is the yellow stick she has in

:08:55.:09:02.

her hand. She has this an orthodox putting style. She calls it the

:09:03.:09:16.

table top. Back to the 14th. Nice par. Strides off to the 15th. Steady

:09:17.:09:29.

day, single bogey on the card. She is trying to get more confidence.

:09:30.:09:34.

Has been struggling this year, but loves this championship. It is her

:09:35.:09:39.

favourite major and if she can have a good week here, it will spur her

:09:40.:09:58.

arm for the rest of the season. Jessica, on the elevated tee on 17.

:09:59.:10:05.

Exhilarating shot this for the players between two towering sand

:10:06.:10:07.

dunes. That looks pretty perfect, bounding down the fairway. Just have

:10:08.:10:15.

a look at this. No tee peg for Laura. There will be a heave to the

:10:16.:10:26.

right. Bango! She just has the thrill of enjoyment of hitting golf

:10:27.:10:28.

balls. Why did she not use a tea? There was one stage in her stage

:10:29.:10:31.

when she wasn't very good with the driver. She found she could hit it

:10:32.:10:34.

off the deck. She has employed that ever since.

:10:35.:10:46.

Flag today cut at the back of the green. Several paces back from the

:10:47.:10:55.

edge. The breeze is supposed to pick up this afternoon but it might get

:10:56.:10:59.

really windy at the weekend, especially on Sunday. A Yacob Louis

:11:00.:11:06.

Hara. Talented group of players. Level

:11:07.:11:26.

par. Especially Carrie Webb and Lexie Thompson. Charley Hull looking

:11:27.:11:38.

for a good Friday afternoon. Georgia Hall, the English amateur. Very tidy

:11:39.:11:54.

start. Carlota Ciganda who was involved in the Solheim Cup Europe.

:11:55.:12:16.

Three over for the day. Par five. 499 yards and just off to the right.

:12:17.:12:20.

Creamer setting off for a draw. That has scampered down, missing the

:12:21.:12:38.

bunkers. The. In the middle of the fairway is a yardage and marker for

:12:39.:12:45.

the players. That says she has hit it out 250 yards. This is for an

:12:46.:12:53.

eagle. They don't help your scorecard. Yes! Dead centre for the

:12:54.:13:00.

young Spaniard. That was a sick of a good move back hurts her back to one

:13:01.:13:12.

over for the championship. She birdied on 15, eagled at 17 and now

:13:13.:13:16.

has another par five to get her teeth into. Suzann Pettersen. Laying

:13:17.:13:32.

alongside Katrina Matthew who is not going along very well at all. Suzann

:13:33.:13:35.

Pettersen at one over. Three bogeys today, a couple of

:13:36.:13:54.

birdies. Another birdie chance coming up. She is one of David led

:13:55.:14:02.

that's stable of players he coaches and he rates her swing as the best

:14:03.:14:13.

of the lot. That is some praise indeed. Nice to see plenty of

:14:14.:14:19.

youngsters out watching the golf. Good crowds here and a great two

:14:20.:14:25.

weeks of golf in this area, the open championship being played at Hoylake

:14:26.:14:29.

next week. They do know their golf in this neck of the woods. Very

:14:30.:14:37.

educated spectators. This is the young American amateur, Emma Talley

:14:38.:14:48.

and out watching hair is Mark James. Yes, she looks very talented

:14:49.:14:59.

indeed. 150 yards to this pin today. A friendlier position than

:15:00.:15:02.

yesterday. I think she just dragged it a touch left. It's easy to set

:15:03.:15:14.

pin positions that tees the players into chasing them and that's where

:15:15.:15:16.

all sorts of trouble can accrue. Now she's made bogey at the last, as

:15:17.:15:31.

soon as I joined the group she did well to make a bogey.

:15:32.:15:55.

shot that because she can't have been hitting much more than a

:15:56.:16:01.

7-iron. Just seems to have lost her appetite for the game slightly. Won

:16:02.:16:08.

this title two times in the past but is now concentrating on playing

:16:09.:16:12.

mostly in Japan. Appeared in the States on two occasions this year.

:16:13.:16:19.

Well done. At ch championship last year she was trying to main four

:16:20.:16:39.

Majors in a row. This year coming in somewhat under the radar. Dame Laura

:16:40.:16:41.

with her second. Well, when the camera pulls out we

:16:42.:16:54.

will see where the flag is. We knew from yesterday's flag position that

:16:55.:16:59.

would have been - she's more room to work with today.

:17:00.:17:03.

You can't be more dead centre than that.

:17:04.:17:12.

Cries of anguish there. Well, the quality of the tee shot

:17:13.:17:20.

hasn't been matched by the quality of the second so far.

:17:21.:17:27.

That flag all the way at the back of the green. Yes, they could have

:17:28.:17:33.

afforded to carry it to the heart of the green today. Yesterday it was

:17:34.:17:38.

trying to bump it in that was the task.

:17:39.:17:44.

I played in the championship here when Laura won and it's amazing to

:17:45.:17:49.

me to see her still out there, loving it anteing it up. She's so

:17:50.:17:53.

hungry for the game. Just trying to get back to level

:17:54.:17:58.

par. Certainly gave that one a go.

:17:59.:18:13.

Suzanne looking for a first victory in 2014. She did have some injury

:18:14.:18:16.

problems earlier in the year, struggled with a back issue.

:18:17.:18:22.

Back to 12 and problems for Jiyai Shin. Yeah, a problem here, and

:18:23.:18:30.

although she's got a back swing it's not going to be easy, the ball will

:18:31.:18:35.

come out low and running. A bank S on the right which she wants to get

:18:36.:18:41.

close to. Anything within ten feet will be a good shot here.

:18:42.:18:49.

I think she can get it out all right, I think control is the key.

:18:50.:18:52.

It's going to come out low and skidding. And just really hard to

:18:53.:18:54.

get it close. Well, I know it's a disappointing

:18:55.:19:19.

that it hasn't come out, but she probably semibudgeted for that. It's

:19:20.:19:22.

not an easy shot, but it's easier. Left herself a birdie chance but may

:19:23.:19:44.

have wanted to get a bit closer. Now back to the 12th.

:19:45.:19:54.

So take two. It really wasn't that difficult a shot, I didn't think,

:19:55.:19:59.

but I don't know if she's trying to get too cute with it. This will be

:20:00.:20:01.

easier from the flat of the bunker. Now it's getting really bad for her,

:20:02.:20:17.

Mark. I am not sure what she's doing to be honest. It's not that bad a

:20:18.:20:22.

bunker. She's taking quite a lazy swing at it. You want

:20:23.:20:25.

bunker. She's taking quite a lazy face wide open and give it some

:20:26.:20:35.

wellie. It's out. A chance to save a double

:20:36.:20:53.

bogey. But what a costly couple of holes, she was going along pretty

:20:54.:20:58.

well, fallen at the 11th and 12th. Ahead at 17, Korda, a long bunker

:20:59.:21:13.

shot. And that was brave. She flew it all the way to the top level. And

:21:14.:21:17.

not bad. Birdie putt for Laura. Uphill,

:21:18.:21:47.

slightly off the right-hand side. Look at the high hand position. Come

:21:48.:21:51.

on! She's looking more comfortable with

:21:52.:22:02.

the putter in her hands this week than I have seen her for a while.

:22:03.:22:23.

At the 18th hole, Munoz. May just be laying up here, Maureen. It's

:22:24.:22:31.

difficult to see exactly how it's lying. But that seemed to have quite

:22:32.:22:39.

a bit of loft on it. Got to avoid those bunkers, which she has done.

:22:40.:22:43.

The lay-ups here at Royal Birkdale require some consideration because

:22:44.:22:47.

you just have to plot your way around through the bunkers. You

:22:48.:22:52.

can't just have a quick lash at it and hope to carry them. It's just a

:22:53.:22:56.

thinker's course and that's what I love about it.

:22:57.:23:17.

A distinctive upright back swing, with another one lasor-like at the

:23:18.:23:30.

flag. It's unique. It's not a position you would teach but that's

:23:31.:23:33.

the great thing about this game there's many weird and wonderful

:23:34.:23:39.

ways of playing it. Jessica Korda Father a birdie at the 17th -- for a

:23:40.:23:44.

birdie at the 17th. This is to get into red numbers. You have to look

:23:45.:23:47.

back at the second shot, do you not, Maureen? Yes, heart of the fairway,

:23:48.:23:55.

off the tee. Mid-iron. Well this is for a double bogey at 12.

:23:56.:23:59.

At least she got that in, that's something. A bad run of form for

:24:00.:24:09.

Shin. It's been 24 weeks at the top of the world rankings from May 2010

:24:10.:24:15.

to February 2011. On and off, being world number one in that period. And

:24:16.:24:22.

struggled withier in 2012, she had -- with injury in 2012.

:24:23.:24:36.

An uphill from here. The greens are quick. This is on an awkward slope.

:24:37.:24:45.

Will it be her first red number? She just hit that straight through

:24:46.:24:56.

the break. Never really looked as if it was tracking at the hole at all.

:24:57.:25:06.

Anything short will get dragged to the left. An awkward spot, difficult

:25:07.:25:19.

to get at and difficult to putt to. I was watching her after a round

:25:20.:25:23.

yesterday, must have been about 20 journalists gathered around her and

:25:24.:25:28.

she started moving backwards towards the advertising board that there is

:25:29.:25:31.

there and moved about 20 feet over the course of ten minutes as they

:25:32.:25:36.

all got closer and closer, trying to get her comments after the round.

:25:37.:25:42.

It's so intense, the intense media scrutiny that the Japanese players

:25:43.:25:45.

endure at these tournaments. Creamer had a chance to reach the

:25:46.:25:59.

green. This is her second putt. This will give you an idea of what slope

:26:00.:26:05.

this is cut on. It's got a break from the right, despite it being a

:26:06.:26:07.

short one. A nice roll. Beautiful putting

:26:08.:26:22.

surfaces. A bit of bling there on the ankle,

:26:23.:26:40.

Maureen. Yes, and name on the shoes. A lovely four. You have been

:26:41.:27:04.

impressed by her, haven't you, Ken? I have been stunningly impressed,

:27:05.:27:07.

actually. She's not short, but not long, but very accurate, great

:27:08.:27:11.

attitude. But such a delightful touch around the greens. Lovely

:27:12.:27:13.

putter. Another one boomed away by Korda.

:27:14.:27:51.

She's a very long hitter. And has the distance, good chance for an

:27:52.:27:54.

eagle at the closing hole for Jessica. Korda -- Jessica Korda.

:27:55.:28:00.

Let's see what Laura can do here. You mentionled struggling with the

:28:01.:28:23.

driver and went to the tee. You have a certain amount of talent to hit it

:28:24.:28:28.

off the deck. But if you ever see Laura using tee pegs look out,

:28:29.:28:34.

because she must be really, really confident.

:28:35.:28:39.

A good chance to finish with a birdie. Could be an eagle birdie

:28:40.:28:48.

finish for the Spaniard trying to boost level par for two days here at

:28:49.:28:56.

the Ricoh British Women's Open. The players at the top of the board out

:28:57.:29:00.

later. All those good scores yesterday came from the very early

:29:01.:29:04.

starters who were - there were only a couple of late scores that

:29:05.:29:06.

threatened par. Left to right-er, watch this putting

:29:07.:29:27.

stroke. Last year she was the best in the world, man or woman. Didn't

:29:28.:29:34.

quite have the read there. But that's going to be a very, very

:29:35.:29:37.

secure birdie. So it's a birdie, birdie finish for

:29:38.:29:53.

Park and a 72. To the 16th hole and Lydia Ko. Looking a little bit

:29:54.:29:58.

anxious, that went down the right side.

:29:59.:30:14.

The caddie, a new relationship for Lydia. She's been trying to find

:30:15.:30:38.

someone that she jels with. How she rescued that round. Home in 36 48

:30:39.:30:42.

per of 72. Very good work indeed. This 16th. Nice time to welcome in

:30:43.:31:16.

Peter Alice. It has been a bright and breezy morning so far. Golf is

:31:17.:31:23.

pretty lively, lots of birdies, but also lots of bogeys, I am afraid.

:31:24.:31:44.

Paula creamer. Finding it hard work. Steady. It is OK.

:31:45.:31:57.

Good crowd out watching the big groupings early on Friday. Suzann

:31:58.:32:10.

Pettersen now. This is her third to the 17th.

:32:11.:32:30.

Trying to get that want to trundle up but I'm not sure it is going to

:32:31.:32:47.

get all the way to the back of the green. She will not be happy with

:32:48.:32:49.

that one. Korda's second. She does not appear to like it very much. In

:32:50.:32:52.

the sand? Yes! Could be worse places to be dandy greenside bunker. Dame

:32:53.:33:06.

Laura. Second shot. 18th hole. 472 yards, an eagle chance coming up for

:33:07.:33:14.

Dame Laura Davies. That will delight the crowd. Be nice to see her finish

:33:15.:33:21.

with an eagle. She won't have seen the little hop over the corner of

:33:22.:33:30.

the bunker either. Quite a few remarkable rounds going on. Several

:33:31.:33:32.

Eagles this morning. The amateur remarkable rounds going on. Several

:33:33.:33:40.

from Australia dropped three strokes in the first three holes will stop

:33:41.:33:58.

then went par, eagle, birdie. 72 or anything under will be a very good

:33:59.:34:01.

score today, as it was yesterday. 14th tee, this is Beatriz Recari

:34:02.:34:06.

from Spain. Had a very good year in 2013. Hasn't had as good a season

:34:07.:34:14.

this year. Two under for the day will stop --.

:34:15.:34:33.

She is from Spain where they do the running of the bulls. Good swing.

:34:34.:34:42.

Just find it interesting watching the different tempos and rhythms,

:34:43.:34:47.

length of swings, particularly amongst the women. Those from the

:34:48.:34:53.

far east, long, will we. Not very pretty swings but very effect give.

:34:54.:34:58.

The others are more tight, compact and punchy. This is Suzann

:34:59.:35:02.

Pettersen, she has a good swing. Coming up at the 17th. It was never

:35:03.:35:26.

going to reach. It was half way, it was tired. Just having a rummage

:35:27.:35:36.

football. Where Arnold Palmer hit his marvellous shot on his way to

:35:37.:35:41.

winning the open championship on July the 16th, 1961. He did not do

:35:42.:35:49.

it out of bushes that tight. He was a legend, but not that much of a

:35:50.:35:58.

legend. Korda now at the bunker shot at the 18th. Nicely played. Bit of a

:35:59.:36:04.

runner. She has had a bit of success on the

:36:05.:36:40.

ladies tour but has never won in the knighted States. Travels with her

:36:41.:36:45.

husband, who is her caddie and their daughter, Lola. It is quite an

:36:46.:36:50.

effort going through the airports, with all of the luggage you need to

:36:51.:36:56.

travel with a small baby. I don't envy them. Her name was Lola!

:36:57.:37:05.

Lookout. There you are. She was a showgirl. But that was many years

:37:06.:37:17.

ago. It is a hard life travelling with young. I have listened to Gary

:37:18.:37:22.

Player travelling with his entourage. 84 bits of luggage, 14

:37:23.:37:29.

children, or what ever it was. He did not have them all at once, mind

:37:30.:37:33.

you. Dame Laura Davies for an eagle. That should be a birdie.

:37:34.:37:46.

Laura will be here for the weekend. Has not made the cut in this

:37:47.:37:56.

championship since 2010. 75 on day one but felt like she had played

:37:57.:38:01.

better. It is a better day on Friday for Dame Laura, 72. Two birdies, two

:38:02.:38:06.

bogeys. Suzann Pettersen now with a little

:38:07.:38:26.

bit of work left for her par at the 17th. That is an interesting

:38:27.:38:32.

routine, the dropping of the left arm and then placing it in the right

:38:33.:38:44.

position. That is an expensive whole! She is such a good player.

:38:45.:38:55.

But this is not a happy hole. She had to drop out of the bush. Now it

:38:56.:39:02.

has gone to the left. Nasty. She has short sighted herself at the 16th.

:39:03.:39:17.

Korda at the 18th, birdie putt. Shots can slip away. It is

:39:18.:39:21.

extraordinary looking at the scoring sheets. The amount of bogeys, double

:39:22.:39:27.

bogeys and also birdies. It is a real mixed bag. Paula Creamer hit it

:39:28.:39:34.

in the lies in the left rough. I think play prudently. Chipped it

:39:35.:39:44.

back into play. Slightly elevated green but plenty of landing area

:39:45.:39:50.

towards the back left of the green. Currently where I am standing,

:39:51.:39:56.

putting surface doesn't have a breath of wind. Unbelievable. This

:39:57.:39:59.

is her third. Don't see too many days like this,

:40:00.:40:33.

Peter in this championship? This coastline, Ireland gets in the wake

:40:34.:40:37.

of it, but nothing else to stop it coming over from the Atlantic. 72.

:40:38.:40:52.

She did not get a good finish. Only a drive and an iron for her today.

:40:53.:41:02.

Not to birdie, is not exactly sinful. Good old timer, bring your

:41:03.:41:13.

binoculars. Dust having a little kip. Steady breathing... Up and

:41:14.:41:21.

down... Back to Beatriz Recari at the 14th

:41:22.:41:41.

for a birdie. It really has been a tough season. She has struggled with

:41:42.:41:45.

illness on a couple of occasions but her best finish, tied for 28th and

:41:46.:41:55.

that was in Australia. She has missed seven cuts in 2014, which is

:41:56.:41:58.

surprising considering the year she had in 2013. Been better today. It

:41:59.:42:09.

can happen so easily in a part one especially if it enters from the

:42:10.:42:14.

Greenside, you land on the down slope. Elevated green and the Green

:42:15.:42:20.

running away from her. If she gets on the putting surface, she has

:42:21.:42:22.

played a belter. Might be a bit ambitious. Open the face and chip

:42:23.:42:34.

underneath it. Nearly brilliant. Awkward shot, we saw one at the

:42:35.:42:38.

12th. It took a couple to get out. Nowhere to swing. It is one of the

:42:39.:42:44.

features of so many links courses. Some people think they are unfair.

:42:45.:42:52.

But they are called hazards. So try to avoid them! Early days, but the

:42:53.:43:09.

scores going out at the bottom. You said there was no wind, can it be no

:43:10.:43:23.

wind, Kenn? I have seen no movement. The 16th is covered by the sand

:43:24.:43:27.

Junes. Have you seen any interesting wildlife? I have. I have seen some

:43:28.:43:32.

wonderful butterflies. A hummingbird. This is your

:43:33.:43:47.

favourite. I was watching Lord Bath this morning, he was in the

:43:48.:43:53.

butterfly area. They are wonderful creatures all settling on the old

:43:54.:44:02.

boy's knows. I think this has got to be one of the best courses for

:44:03.:44:07.

butterflies. Why would that be? There is a great expanse of land

:44:08.:44:13.

that helps them. At St Andrews, it has all been trampled away, but they

:44:14.:44:30.

like being out, glittering around. Beatriz Recari has got through most

:44:31.:44:33.

of the round incredibly well this morning. She is smacking one away on

:44:34.:44:43.

15. It has skipped the bunker but the bubbly won't be able to get

:44:44.:44:47.

there in two. clubhouse, they're fluttering a wee

:44:48.:45:10.

bit. Very tranquil looking out across the bay. Wonder who they're

:45:11.:45:13.

supporting? ! That was for a bogey, so costly.

:45:14.:45:23.

It's going to be a double. All started with a slightlierant

:45:24.:45:41.

drive into the bushes and you walk away with a double bogey. -- lightly

:45:42.:45:47.

errant drive. You can learn a lot from Paula

:45:48.:45:58.

Creamer's play here. It was in the rough, decided not to take a chance,

:45:59.:46:02.

pitched out sideways and eliminated taking more than a five and given

:46:03.:46:04.

herself a chance of a four. It's there. Perfect speed. Well

:46:05.:46:19.

done. Have you given any thoughts to what

:46:20.:46:37.

the qualifying score might be, Ken, for the final 36 holes? Well, after

:46:38.:46:42.

one round it was plus four, scoring may be easier today, so it's

:46:43.:46:49.

suggesting plus six, seven. Five, six, seven, that sort of thing? It's

:46:50.:46:53.

hard to tell, if the wind picks up this afternoon it might be eight or

:46:54.:46:56.

nine. Well done. I did see I think a sand

:46:57.:47:15.

lizard, this is one of the few places you can see sand lizards, I

:47:16.:47:20.

wasn't sure if it was sand or common. I am not sure they have a

:47:21.:47:33.

great collection, but as you say, they're being squeezed out.

:47:34.:47:39.

This is going to be her final hole of the championship. It's not been a

:47:40.:47:56.

day to remember for Katrina. 13 over par for the round. Five bogeys in

:47:57.:48:01.

the first nine, a six and eight and a seven coming home. Pettersen has

:48:02.:48:06.

been struggling, as well. You never know, you wake up feeling

:48:07.:48:14.

great and first shot goes into trouble and it's a struggle. Another

:48:15.:48:18.

day, you go out, you don't feel all that great and you break the course

:48:19.:48:23.

record. People try to explain it, but you can't.

:48:24.:48:28.

No scores on the right mean they haven't started yet. Players near

:48:29.:48:37.

the top of the leaderboard going out after lunch.

:48:38.:48:41.

Matthew tapping in for an eagle. Very un-Matthew-like that round.

:48:42.:48:54.

She's such a steady performer. A tricky chip, very fast from the

:48:55.:49:05.

front. You have to get the ball landing softly and slowly, if you

:49:06.:49:12.

can. You don't want too much fizz. Some of you may remember Ken

:49:13.:49:20.

attached to the club for years, he had a wonderful touch around, slow

:49:21.:49:25.

swing, difficult to play shots like that.

:49:26.:49:29.

She nipped it, if you nip it and it doesn't stop that's pretty good, but

:49:30.:49:36.

could do better. But it needs a different technique. Old-fashioned,

:49:37.:49:40.

I am afraid, but true. Three eagles at the 18th hole today,

:49:41.:49:55.

so that could make for an interesting day. Two par-5s to

:49:56.:49:59.

finish and a good chance to better the score card. 17th tee and Paula

:50:00.:50:02.

Creamer. The second rounds this year have not

:50:03.:50:15.

been kind to Paula. She hasn't broken 70 in the second round since

:50:16.:50:26.

February. Talley back on the 14th. A good tee shot, affording her a great

:50:27.:50:32.

opportunity there which she has grabbed gladly.

:50:33.:50:38.

Back to the 18th and Suzanne. Only had a couple of birdies. Four

:50:39.:50:56.

dropped shots. This isn't a pushover either. It's 13, 14 feet, I suppose.

:50:57.:51:05.

I am fascinated by her putting technique, Maureen, how she

:51:06.:51:08.

addresses it and it looks as if she's going to putt cross-handed.

:51:09.:51:16.

Extends her left arm down. Some little trick she's working on, in a

:51:17.:51:19.

minute the left hand will appear down there. Oh, holding it away down

:51:20.:51:24.

there. I don't know what that's all about. If it goes in, it works.

:51:25.:51:31.

There you are, don't know why everybody doesn't do it!

:51:32.:51:50.

Calm waters out there, Maureen. They can never be too calm for me, Peter.

:51:51.:51:59.

I am in the same boat. I am not a water baby. I am not too happy on

:52:00.:52:08.

the water. There is a great bit of golfing country and lizard country

:52:09.:52:14.

and slow worm country. Ko has been having a few woes. A six

:52:15.:52:26.

and seven, a couple of birdies would do a power of good.

:52:27.:52:44.

67 yards for Recari. There is a bank short and left of the pin. She needs

:52:45.:52:51.

to keep this just right of the pin. Just releasing a bit there. She's

:52:52.:53:12.

not a long hitter but usually deadly accurate. A couple of seasons ago

:53:13.:53:17.

was known as the iron woman of the LPGA tour, played 62 consecutive

:53:18.:53:22.

tournaments on the LPGA and that takes some doing.

:53:23.:53:30.

241 yards to the flag. Has to tip-toe over that and let it run on

:53:31.:53:40.

to the green. Narrow target. 14 paces or so wide.

:53:41.:53:50.

The club looks miles too big for her. Oh, over the top! Oh, you lucky

:53:51.:54:00.

girl. She won't know where that is, she will have a big smile on her

:54:01.:54:04.

face when she sees that. Oyama on 18 trying to tidy up with a

:54:05.:54:24.

birdie. And a 72. Well-played, a much better day for the Japanese

:54:25.:54:31.

player. The first seven players in of this second round all scored 72

:54:32.:54:35.

which makes strange looking reading when you look at the scoring board.

:54:36.:54:38.

Then we hit an 83 with Matthew. Sort of hit that bank. Hasn't got a

:54:39.:54:56.

terrible lie. Not a bad angle of the flag. Could she have had a cut

:54:57.:55:00.

terrible lie. Not a bad angle of the the green, Ken? Just too far back.

:55:01.:55:06.

Both of them played... They were playing as a three-shot. She needs

:55:07.:55:17.

to land this short of the tier on the green, let it dribble up. Over

:55:18.:55:21.

is not good. Yeah, that's getting better all the

:55:22.:55:29.

time. This was one of the strong

:55:30.:55:56.

departments of Recari's game in last year's Solheim Cup.

:55:57.:56:05.

So far there's been a masterclass in chipping from Ko. Spinning it, it

:56:06.:56:12.

better sit. That was a bit risky. She will have

:56:13.:56:32.

another challenge facing her when she gets up there.

:56:33.:56:41.

Got to release it up. No birdies yet today.

:56:42.:57:02.

Well, it was a very strange one that, wasn't it, Ken? It seemed to

:57:03.:57:10.

be the wrong type of shot. The ball is sitting on the top of the grass,

:57:11.:57:20.

and opened it. A switch back of a green this, lots of bumps and

:57:21.:57:26.

hollows. Perfect golfing weather, perfect watching weather.

:57:27.:57:40.

Laura is into the grub. 72 under the belt. Just sit here Father a little

:57:41.:57:50.

while now and watch the world go by! -- for a little while now.

:57:51.:58:04.

A beautiful free swing. Solid, sensible. Compact swing.

:58:05.:58:21.

Workmanlike. Not many things to go wrong.

:58:22.:58:31.

A long putt up the 17th, after that strange chip shot she played.

:58:32.:58:44.

That was a beautiful pace putt. No nerves, stress required for the next

:58:45.:58:56.

one. She's going to remain at one over par. Shot 72 yesterday. One

:58:57.:59:04.

over so far today. 16 pars, one bogey on 13. A nice red number would

:59:05.:59:09.

redress that. She's five over, she could do -

:59:10.:59:32.

doesn't want to take any more than par on the last two holes. They're

:59:33.:59:41.

two 5s. Particularly today because it's wide open birdie chances. Quite

:59:42.:59:47.

quick from this side. Might move towards the tee for a - to the right

:59:48.:59:56.

a little. Not much. Nice putt. Oh, didn't go. Just stayed out. I think

:59:57.:00:03.

she thought it was in. So only a par-5.

:00:04.:01:01.

hard, I am afraid. It was too hard. Just catch the edge of the wrong

:01:02.:01:05.

speed and they spin away. That was a costly, untidy. Just a whisker too

:01:06.:01:25.

much left and would not go in. Couple of sixes. Two sixes and

:01:26.:01:32.

seven. You can see those are the early

:01:33.:01:39.

starters beginning to show on the board. Azahara Munoz, two rounds

:01:40.:01:49.

completed. A number of good scores coming in and a lot of nationalities

:01:50.:01:56.

represented yet again. Acute strong players yet to go. Lexi Thomson and

:01:57.:02:07.

carry web still to go. As we looked down, Georgia Hall becoming the

:02:08.:02:09.

leading amateur yet again. Missed the bunker. But it saddled.

:02:10.:02:35.

Just a thump down the fairway. 230 yards to clear the bunker. It is

:02:36.:02:41.

basically the line the players want to take. Creamer should clear it.

:02:42.:02:49.

She will fly it slightly longer than Ai Miyazato. But if in doubt you

:02:50.:02:56.

need to go a little bit slightly left. That is a drill David Whelan

:02:57.:03:19.

coaches, to keep the head level. Here she goes. Anxious. No longer

:03:20.:03:38.

anxious. Yesterday there was a little bit more breeze, so the

:03:39.:03:43.

medium length hitters were sailing over that. But once the wind drops

:03:44.:03:49.

or switches into you, it is very much in play. Interesting, the

:03:50.:03:58.

fairway to the right of it, fairway to the left of it. There is almost a

:03:59.:04:04.

danger if you do clear it, of running into the next one. It is

:04:05.:04:16.

like landing an aircraft carrier on a deck. It is so calm and

:04:17.:04:20.

controlled. She is only 17. The wind is slightly helping but

:04:21.:04:38.

almost directly across the angle of the tee shot. She has dropped eight

:04:39.:04:47.

shots so far. She has got away with it. Will it stop? Yes.

:04:48.:05:03.

That is why, if you are in a heavy rough, pitching out isn't the

:05:04.:05:11.

easiest. All of those bunkers, two on the left, two on the right, can

:05:12.:05:13.

catch you out. Beatriz Recari. Perfect for

:05:14.:05:33.

difference. The Spaniard lives in Orlando now, she actually lives in

:05:34.:05:49.

Sergio's old house. Going well. Could be. Pace again. With a little

:05:50.:05:59.

bit more speed, it would not have gone. Just got it right, well done.

:06:00.:06:06.

Last year's US amateur champion. That was the qualification that got

:06:07.:06:08.

her into this championship. Meet Key said he has had good

:06:09.:06:38.

showings in the past. There have been a couple of withdrawals. Bad

:06:39.:06:52.

back for Christie Kerr. Not sure about Siri Pack, to be honest. The

:06:53.:06:59.

young and -- amateur has had an amazing round. You can always tell

:07:00.:07:15.

the one with dentures. They take it serene Lee. It is the ones with a

:07:16.:07:23.

few fillings, ouch. Keep your mouth closed when you are eating!

:07:24.:07:38.

If you go in that bunker up against the face you will not be able to

:07:39.:07:48.

reach the green in three. The pin is in a much more accessible spot than

:07:49.:07:52.

yesterday. Towards the back right today. If ever you are in this

:07:53.:08:01.

situation and you cannot reach with this shot in hand, get the ball on

:08:02.:08:07.

the fairway and then make sure you reach with the next. Six on the

:08:08.:08:19.

card. It looked a heavy light, Kenn? It was, on the upslope. -- a heavy

:08:20.:08:25.

lie. Beatriz Recari just sizing this up.

:08:26.:08:43.

Good, solid seven iron. Right to left, not a difficult putt, but it

:08:44.:08:53.

will be a bit slippery. She has been stalking this for a minute or two.

:08:54.:09:24.

What a beauty! What a beautiful putt. I remember her holding all of

:09:25.:09:34.

those putt, magic. Timed it to perfection. When she gets the

:09:35.:09:39.

putting boots on, there is no one better. 239. She wants it to be

:09:40.:09:59.

straight to run between the bunkers. She has not done it. That would have

:10:00.:10:09.

been through the back of the green, I fancy, if it had got through the

:10:10.:10:22.

gap. Not a bad spot to be. Good angles. Nice lie for Lydia. It looks

:10:23.:10:36.

to have possibilities. Very well done. An opportunity to pick one or

:10:37.:10:54.

maybe two up here on the last hole. May he said key, this for a birdie.

:10:55.:11:00.

They are all finding their range now. I was in the second -- it was

:11:01.:11:09.

in the second round of this championship last year that she had

:11:10.:11:12.

a couple of Eagles at St Andrews. Finished tied seventh. That counts

:11:13.:11:35.

as much as a 300 yard drive! Out in 33 with three drop shots. It is

:11:36.:11:42.

pretty good. Two bogeys coming home. One under for the championship so

:11:43.:11:53.

far. Famous old clock in the clubhouse. It is very comfortable in

:11:54.:12:05.

there. It looks 1930s doesn't it? That was the style of it years ago.

:12:06.:12:18.

Come on, let's see a good swing here. From 142. That will do.

:12:19.:12:35.

Extraordinary rhythm, that swing? Amazing. She is only about five foot

:12:36.:12:40.

two inches. She is not a very big person. An elongated swing. What are

:12:41.:12:52.

they looking at? Tiny little tart. Ungainly looking -- tiny little tot.

:12:53.:13:16.

As a footballer's warp. In 2010, she had five winds around the world. She

:13:17.:13:24.

was consistently near the top of all of the scoring stats. Today she

:13:25.:13:41.

still hasn't won a major. Great view of the hospitality unit here.

:13:42.:14:04.

Good view of this swing. Quicker read them all together. Pushed it a

:14:05.:14:09.

bit. -- rhythm. Beatriz Recari has had four birdies

:14:10.:14:52.

today. This is more of a return to the form she enjoyed this year --

:14:53.:15:02.

last year. 17th tee. Reachable par five. That came off the putter so

:15:03.:15:23.

softly. Pretty long, too. Yes, three wins in America for Recari, very,

:15:24.:15:29.

very competent player. A deft touch required from Ko. Oh!

:15:30.:16:20.

You can't really be more deft than that. Delightfully played. Two in a

:16:21.:16:25.

row. Ken's been singing her praises about the chipping and putting and

:16:26.:16:30.

he knows a thing or two about that, but that was really lovely.

:16:31.:16:38.

It's a closing birdie, but it's home in 39 for Ko. Two sixes and a seven,

:16:39.:16:47.

that's not a bad score. Tacking that on to yesterday's 72, leaves her at

:16:48.:16:52.

plus four total. Miyazato, a long birdie putt.

:16:53.:16:58.

Travelling - moving right. She's had one dropped stroke and

:16:59.:17:17.

that was at the 13th hole. Not a birdie. Very competent play. 73.

:17:18.:17:38.

Should be an easy card to mark and sign.

:17:39.:17:49.

This group have been a little behind all day. I hope there's no news at

:17:50.:17:57.

the end of their rounds but I think they're OK. After a splendid bunker

:17:58.:18:06.

shot, for a birdie. We have watched this a few times and you have to be

:18:07.:18:11.

careful, if you are a bit weak and right-half it can dribble right

:18:12.:18:15.

here. This needs to be struck nice and firm, dead middle. Like that.

:18:16.:18:17.

Well done. That's a 73 for Creamer, that should

:18:18.:18:31.

be good enough for the weekend. Top 65 players plus ties play at the

:18:32.:18:34.

weekend. This is the emerging story on

:18:35.:18:42.

another beautiful day in Southport. We have had terrible weather for

:18:43.:18:45.

this event the last couple of years so this makes a glorious change.

:18:46.:19:01.

Recari's momentum continued, at the 17th she had this putt, about 18

:19:02.:19:11.

feet or so. Would it be back-to-back birdies? No danger. Down to 2-under

:19:12.:19:17.

for the championship and well into red figures and surging up the

:19:18.:19:23.

leaderboard. Here from a greenside bunker. That gives her a chance of

:19:24.:19:29.

three birdies in a row. Very elegantly done.

:19:30.:19:43.

And so was that. A superb round. Upstaging that of Ayako Uehara

:19:44.:19:47.

yesterday. I got her reaction to that round afterwards.

:19:48.:19:52.

A 67, the best round in this championship so far. A wonderful

:19:53.:19:56.

finish, birdie, birdie, birdie, tell us about it. Yes, it was a great

:19:57.:20:00.

day. I drove it really well all day long so that gave me a lot of

:20:01.:20:03.

confidence. The putter behaved today. I made some really good putts

:20:04.:20:10.

especially in the end so just really thrilled that I could put this round

:20:11.:20:15.

together and that I managed to stay patient and do a good job out there.

:20:16.:20:20.

You are probably pinching yourself, this is the second time in six

:20:21.:20:23.

previous appearances you have made the cut here. Why have you suddenly

:20:24.:20:29.

got to grips with lynks golf at this point? I learn from experience,

:20:30.:20:33.

definitely many mistakes in previous years so I managed to learn a few

:20:34.:20:41.

things here and there and I think in all lynks course it's vital to put

:20:42.:20:45.

it on the fairway and I did that yesterday and today, that was the

:20:46.:20:48.

key. You had a wonderful 2013, two wins and a debut on the Solheim Cup

:20:49.:20:52.

and a real star in that victory over America. How difficult is it to try

:20:53.:20:56.

to follow up a year like this and is this a real flash of that previous

:20:57.:21:03.

form last year? Yes, it's been an eventful 2014, especially the

:21:04.:21:08.

beginning with injuries and definitely expectations like you

:21:09.:21:11.

say, definitely expectations are high after I consider my best year

:21:12.:21:19.

on the LPGA and so it was tough but I learn from everything and all the

:21:20.:21:24.

challenges just make you grow and I learned many things about myself and

:21:25.:21:28.

about my game and I just worked on basics and worked on just getting

:21:29.:21:34.

back on track and get confidence back and I feel really good and

:21:35.:21:38.

could feel that way on the course yesterday and today and the score

:21:39.:21:41.

reflects that. You have shown the way, keep it going. Thank you. Thank

:21:42.:21:47.

you. So now a co-leader with Ayako Uehara. The Japanese player dropped

:21:48.:21:56.

a shot early in her round. A three-way tie at the top.

:21:57.:22:02.

Some of the great names as you look down the leaderboard. Par has been

:22:03.:22:09.

one of the great scores the last couple of days, it's been tough for

:22:10.:22:11.

all these players. There really is nothing like a Dame

:22:12.:22:32.

and here she is, Dame Laura. Relieved to be with us for the

:22:33.:22:36.

weekend because it's been a good few years have you been with us for this

:22:37.:22:42.

weekend. That's right. Missed it, missed a few cuts already this year.

:22:43.:22:46.

Any time you are on for the weekend, if the weather turns nasty anything

:22:47.:22:49.

can happen. You want to be in with a chance. In your 30th year of playing

:22:50.:22:54.

this great championship, and now as the latest member of Royal Birkdale,

:22:55.:22:57.

you have something to live up to here. I know, yeah, local member

:22:58.:23:02.

now. It's a place obviously I - I won it in 86 which is almost a

:23:03.:23:08.

lifetime ago, it's good to be back. I remember finishing eagle-eagle

:23:09.:23:12.

last time I think on the Saturday night, hoping to do that again

:23:13.:23:14.

tomorrow and maybe have a chance on Sunday. You don't know. If things go

:23:15.:23:20.

against you on - I saw electiony started with a ten -- Lexie started

:23:21.:23:25.

with a ten today, anything can happen. You won it by a street, five

:23:26.:23:30.

shots something like that, and the prize 28 years ago was rather

:23:31.:23:34.

different to the elegant slender Cup that it is today. As you will see

:23:35.:23:39.

Laura finishing here in the famous pink cardie, this was the prize. A

:23:40.:23:45.

pair of candlesticks, very charming. Very nice. Different to the one they

:23:46.:23:49.

give now. I am surprised I didn't drop that. They were a bit up

:23:50.:23:55.

stable. We were looking through your 3046 year -- 30-year career here. I

:23:56.:24:05.

remember the days, and here you are and it's amazing to think that you

:24:06.:24:09.

have something like 84 worldwide victories and here you are

:24:10.:24:12.

yesterday, this one going in the other day. Laura, it's an amazing

:24:13.:24:19.

career to reflect upon. If I were to ask you which is the best victory of

:24:20.:24:22.

your career and why what would you say? It has to be be the 87 US Open.

:24:23.:24:35.

It opened doors for me. Turned up as a no-hoper and one of the greatest

:24:36.:24:38.

prizes in women's golf and they allowed me to join the tour and

:24:39.:24:41.

didn't have to go to tour school which was the best part, that was

:24:42.:24:46.

it. 88 was my rookie year in America and it's gone well since. You

:24:47.:24:57.

changed so many things, the he eligiblibility for the tour. Your

:24:58.:25:00.

attitude, that's what people have really enjoyed. How much fun has it

:25:01.:25:06.

been genuinely or is there some tigress inside you bursting to win,

:25:07.:25:09.

is that what drives you? It's all about the winning. When you are

:25:10.:25:14.

winning, if you are winning and not having fun there's something wrong.

:25:15.:25:17.

I have been fortunate to win. When you are not doing so well it's hard

:25:18.:25:21.

to smile. I am not very good at hiding my feelings. You can tell

:25:22.:25:25.

when I am not doing well. Certainly over the years the victories are

:25:26.:25:28.

what makes the game fun. Everyone wants to see people enjoying the

:25:29.:25:32.

game and the best way is rolling in that 30-footer to win a championship

:25:33.:25:36.

somewhere. Obviously the oldest player on the field at 5... Thank

:25:37.:25:42.

you for that. You have kids here who are 30 years your junior and below.

:25:43.:25:46.

What keeps you fresh, what makes you want to still compete against these

:25:47.:25:50.

youngsters? I think the basic fact is I still think I am good enough.

:25:51.:25:55.

That's the thing. My results recently in the last few years

:25:56.:25:59.

haven't shown that but I know how I am hitting on the range, if I can

:26:00.:26:03.

make more putts I can be in contention again. Not many people

:26:04.:26:05.

probably think that because it's been a long time since I won on the

:26:06.:26:11.

LPGA, two or three years since I won a tournament anywhere. I won a

:26:12.:26:14.

seniors event two years ago. If you think in your own mind you can still

:26:15.:26:18.

do it you definitely can. If I were to say, are you resetting your goals

:26:19.:26:22.

as a Dame, clearly there are responsibilities one has to live up,

:26:23.:26:27.

but in golfing terps what would fascinate -- terms what would be

:26:28.:26:34.

Laura Davies Solheim Cup captain, is that a realistic ambition? It's not

:26:35.:26:37.

something I particularly want to do, I am still going to try to qualify

:26:38.:26:42.

for the Solheim Cup in Germany and just coming up to a year's time, so

:26:43.:26:46.

that's the biggest thing, the thought of being a captain at any

:26:47.:26:50.

stage hasn't entered my mind because I still consider myself a player and

:26:51.:26:53.

want to keep playing. If there is one player on the circuit now that

:26:54.:26:58.

reminds you of yourself in your pomp, who is it? Charley Hull

:26:59.:27:05.

springs to mind immediately, has the same attitude, sees the pin and goes

:27:06.:27:08.

for it. She will have a go. That's the way I always played my golf and

:27:09.:27:12.

she impressed me very much two years ago when I played with her in

:27:13.:27:16.

Morocco, one shot and I said this girl's good. Obviously at that stage

:27:17.:27:20.

it was her first pro event and she's gone on well since then. How many

:27:21.:27:24.

tournaments have you thrown away where little cautious might have won

:27:25.:27:29.

you even more? You can't say that because the amount of shots I have

:27:30.:27:31.

hit to win tournaments, you never got to be scared to fail. That's the

:27:32.:27:35.

best thing. In Japan one year I had a shot to a par-5, I was eagle got

:27:36.:27:40.

me probably second, maybe in a play-off, I made a ten. Went for it,

:27:41.:27:45.

I went for it again and I walked off miserable that day. But another year

:27:46.:27:48.

I knock it in the middle of the green and maybe win the play-off.

:27:49.:27:51.

That's always been my attitude. I don't really want to change it. It's

:27:52.:27:56.

great to see you here for the weekend and everyone will look

:27:57.:27:58.

forward to seeing you over the next couple of days. Thank you for

:27:59.:28:02.

joining us. We look forward to seeing Laura Saturday and Sunday.

:28:03.:28:07.

Next week we will be looking forward to the turn of the men just down the

:28:08.:28:10.

coast on the Wirral peninsula. Where we see a magnificent landscape

:28:11.:28:37.

they see a hostile terrain, the magic of the Open starts 17th July

:28:38.:28:42.

across the BBC. And magical it should be, the 143rd

:28:43.:28:47.

Open championship. We will have highlights this weekend of events at

:28:48.:28:55.

the Royal Aberdeen Club. Rory McIlroy is tuning up nicely. We

:28:56.:29:00.

saw 64, course record from him yesterday.

:29:01.:29:10.

In fact, Scotland will be under the sporting microscope shortly again, a

:29:11.:29:17.

week on Wednesday at the start of the 20th Commonwealth Games.

:29:18.:30:30.

Wednesday. I have another visitor in the studio. The most beautiful

:30:31.:30:36.

crystal trophy. This is the Solheim Cup. Played for by the European

:30:37.:30:43.

women against the top American professionals. It has been going

:30:44.:30:53.

since the 1990s. This is your big event. It is heading to central

:30:54.:30:56.

Europe in Germany and that is a bit of a coup in central Europe, how

:30:57.:31:03.

much German who you speak? Not enough. I have a year to learn will

:31:04.:31:10.

stop I took French and Spanish in school but I will work on my German.

:31:11.:31:14.

It will get a great welcome over there because there are some great

:31:15.:31:18.

German players hoping to get into this team. What impact is this

:31:19.:31:25.

competition having on women's golf after Europe won for the first time

:31:26.:31:29.

on American soil last year in Colorado. How do you sense this

:31:30.:31:34.

competition is evolving? You can feel the interest growing. A lot of

:31:35.:31:41.

people watched the Colorado matches. People who like golf, people not in

:31:42.:31:47.

golf, it is raising women's golf a lot. Coming to Germany now, we are

:31:48.:31:57.

so excited. They are ready to have the best Solheim Cup ever, they say.

:31:58.:32:03.

I believed them. Europe going for three in a row, which would be

:32:04.:32:10.

unprecedented. It has had an impact that thumping defeat, 18-10, for the

:32:11.:32:16.

Americans. It has had an impact on the American players. American

:32:17.:32:22.

players seem to have reclaimed their own tour with nine US victories so

:32:23.:32:27.

far. I bet they wish this was this year and not next? I am happy we are

:32:28.:32:35.

not playing them this year. But you never know, we still have a good

:32:36.:32:39.

game. It is nice to see so many American girls play well on their

:32:40.:32:44.

own tour. But it is nice for others in Europe to see the American girls

:32:45.:32:51.

performing. The win in Colorado was amazing, to beat them on their own

:32:52.:32:55.

ground for the first time and with those numbers, it was very

:32:56.:33:00.

exciting. Does it show the strength of the European tour as well?

:33:01.:33:09.

Obviously, quite a lot of players were Rockies at the time and began

:33:10.:33:12.

to show exactly what they were capable of? Definitely, the quality

:33:13.:33:20.

of golf on the tour is growing. I am out playing a few events every year

:33:21.:33:24.

myself and there are so many young girls, so much talent. Charley Hull

:33:25.:33:30.

came out last year and played so great. She played a very good

:33:31.:33:37.

Solheim Cup, being that young. She is not the only one. So many young

:33:38.:33:41.

girls coming out, it is so much fun to see. You were assistant captain,

:33:42.:33:49.

what kind of captain do you hope to be this year? I will try to be

:33:50.:33:56.

pretty relaxed. The last captain was calm and collected and I will try to

:33:57.:34:01.

copy that a little bit. What we did so well in Colorado, we had the best

:34:02.:34:07.

team spirit and so much fun together. So many good laughs. I

:34:08.:34:11.

will build on that and have a fun week together. We had a get-together

:34:12.:34:16.

here on Wednesday at the open. It was fun to see a lot of the girls.

:34:17.:34:21.

We have had some good laughs already. That is a big part of it,

:34:22.:34:27.

have a good time together. The European team seemed to do that

:34:28.:34:30.

easily. We don't have a hard time getting together as a team. I will

:34:31.:34:42.

try to be a fun captain, I guess. What will you learn from this

:34:43.:34:52.

year's Ryder Cup at the needles? Can you watch the male professionals

:34:53.:34:57.

going about their business? I have never been to the Ryder Cup and I

:34:58.:35:05.

will be able to go this year. I am excited to be able to go and pick up

:35:06.:35:19.

anything I can from them. It is a great excuse to get a ticket. That

:35:20.:35:21.

is what I thought. A quick word about this championship, how it has

:35:22.:35:23.

evolved and these fantastic conditions we are playing in. It is

:35:24.:35:25.

amazing, it is always like this in England. It is absolutely beautiful

:35:26.:35:26.

out there and the condition of the course is as good as it can be. It

:35:27.:35:31.

is good to see some of the European girls playing well. It goes without

:35:32.:35:33.

saying, we wish you all the best. Look after this little beauty. I

:35:34.:35:40.

will, for sure. We will see some of her European potential, team members

:35:41.:35:48.

over the coming hours. These are some of the top names we will be

:35:49.:36:04.

watching today. The leader over night was Ayako Uehara. Charley Hull

:36:05.:36:10.

made such an impact last year. After a positive start for Morgan

:36:11.:36:16.

Pressel, she presses her case for a win at St Andrews. She is out with

:36:17.:36:26.

Anna Nordqvist of Sweden. A few shots to update you with at the

:36:27.:36:41.

moment. That was a fine round of 70 or the former US open champion. Her

:36:42.:36:50.

overnight leader, a birdie putt at nine to go back into the outright

:36:51.:36:54.

lead. It has been an up-and-down round for the young Japanese. Three

:36:55.:37:01.

bogeys and three birdies. This is at the very next hole and she will be

:37:02.:37:06.

out of the lead. That was for her par. Her fourth bogey of the day. A

:37:07.:37:12.

roller-coaster round for our overnight leader. This is how it

:37:13.:37:13.

looks: Sun Ju Ahn, nicknamed big mamma

:37:14.:37:46.

making her way up the leaderboard. We go back to our commentary team.

:37:47.:37:58.

Out on the 11th green, Morgan Pressel. Sorry, that was Stacy

:37:59.:38:08.

Lewis. Let's go down to Mark James. Pressel. Sorry, that was Stacy

:38:09.:38:15.

Lewis. Let's It was indeed Stacy Lewis. Two fine shots. Left her with

:38:16.:38:29.

a tricky birdie putt. Lewis has stayed the same. Is the breeze

:38:30.:38:36.

getting up at all? There is a little bit of winds, it is no more. Not

:38:37.:38:44.

much of a problem will stop quite a benign day for the links. Charley

:38:45.:38:48.

Hull with an absolutely lovely second shot. She has been rewarded

:38:49.:38:56.

with probably the easiest putt you can get in this position. Downhill a

:38:57.:39:11.

touch, but not desperately quick. It finished right on top of her

:39:12.:39:25.

partner's marker. In fact, I suspect Lewis' cloying stopped it rolling a

:39:26.:39:31.

bit further. They will be fiddling around a bit trying to move various

:39:32.:39:32.

markers. Good around a bit trying to move various

:39:33.:39:41.

for Charley Hull. She has had two bogeys, one birdie. A couple of

:39:42.:39:52.

pars. But they have been comfortable pars.

:39:53.:40:18.

Amy Yang with a chance for an eagle at the 18th. This for a round of 71.

:40:19.:40:30.

Going to be back-to-back days to finish the day for Amy Yang. She is

:40:31.:40:37.

in the hunt to win her first major championship, heading into the

:40:38.:40:38.

weekend. 71, 72. Quality player. Won her

:40:39.:41:00.

first tournament at 16. Quickly to Charley Hull. Smacked it into the

:41:01.:41:01.

middle with no-nonsense. Identical putt now. Well done. But

:41:02.:41:23.

another one goes adrift. The overnight leader is slipping down

:41:24.:41:37.

the board. Two under, now. Problems at the 13th for Holly Clyburn. She

:41:38.:41:45.

went into the long graphs. This is her third. When you hit one shot in

:41:46.:41:52.

trouble, you have got to play safe. If in trouble, get it out and start

:41:53.:41:54.

A reminder of the situation here. again. Don't compound and error.

:41:55.:42:07.

A reminder of the situation here. Beatriz Recari has lit up this royal

:42:08.:42:14.

but they'll course with 67. She is having her lunch and looking forward

:42:15.:42:18.

to the challenge over the next couple of days. Sun Ju Ahn, is also

:42:19.:42:34.

a winner already twice. Back to the 10th green we go. Morgan Pressel,

:42:35.:42:39.

chance for a birdie. Good try. Ninth appearance in the

:42:40.:42:56.

British open. She is almost a veterinarian her mid-20s. Yes,

:42:57.:43:05.

started young. Seems to enjoy these links greens. Has promised a couple

:43:06.:43:15.

of decent putt. Lovely condition is out here. Sunshine and a light

:43:16.:43:26.

breeze. Almost perfectly blue sky. Onto this beautiful par 3/12 hole,

:43:27.:43:39.

Stacy Lewis. -- par three, 12th hole. Couple of bunkers. That looks

:43:40.:43:54.

lovely. Beautiful bit of draw in. The flag is virtually still. More

:43:55.:44:01.

often than not this whole plays in a hefty crosswind from right to left.

:44:02.:44:14.

152 yards. This 12th is playing today. Charley Hull will be trying

:44:15.:44:20.

to keep this up to the right. Not too far. It looks pretty safe.

:44:21.:45:12.

Well, all three safely aboard the 12th.

:45:13.:45:22.

It's a lovely corner of the golf course.

:45:23.:45:40.

The 13th, Holly Clyburn. And that was not what she needed. 13th hole

:45:41.:45:54.

looking to be quite costly for Holly Clyburn. From the elevated 11th tee.

:45:55.:46:02.

352 yards. That's a brave one. She was the first player to record a

:46:03.:46:22.

hole in one in the Solheim Cup matches which she did in Denver,

:46:23.:46:29.

Colorado, rather timely at the 17th. It ended the match. Yeah, I think

:46:30.:46:35.

the opponents had... They had a shot to tie. That's not very appetising.

:46:36.:46:49.

She was playing with Caroline, the two Swedes. A tremendous week for

:46:50.:46:52.

the Europeans in Denver. A nice little shot. I am surprised

:46:53.:47:10.

to see her at seven over par. She looked in complete control of her

:47:11.:47:14.

game in the run-up top the championship. She did, I felt she

:47:15.:47:18.

went out yesterday on a relatively calm day and tried to play a lot of

:47:19.:47:23.

wind shots which to me the conditions didn't exactly require.

:47:24.:47:26.

She could have played a more normal game.

:47:27.:47:31.

There's really nothing you can do except get it back out on the

:47:32.:47:44.

fairway from here. You have no options. It's chop it out and get

:47:45.:47:46.

going again. Lucky bounce. That will work out

:47:47.:48:06.

pretty well indeed. You can make up the score on the back nine. She

:48:07.:48:12.

needs to play it in probably three or four under. Introduced to the

:48:13.:48:24.

game by Tiger's father. He was her first coach, she had a close

:48:25.:48:25.

relationship with her grandfather. 35 feet uphill for Uehara. Good safe

:48:26.:48:45.

tee shot. She can give this a fair whack up

:48:46.:49:05.

Par-3 steadies the ship a little bit. There is today's work so far.

:49:06.:49:27.

Just a bit more! That's going to be a double bogey, I am afraid. It's

:49:28.:49:48.

been a good year, though, for Holy. -- Holly. Hopefully Charley Hull

:49:49.:49:55.

will have seen her opponents putt. Well, she had seen it and hit it

:49:56.:50:00.

further right. Never had the confidence to hit it hard enough,

:50:01.:50:04.

simple as that. You can see on her right leg some of that, I can't even

:50:05.:50:10.

say it, the tape they have. She told me yesterday she was off to the

:50:11.:50:13.

physio to get treatment on the back of her leg, it was a bit tight.

:50:14.:50:20.

Everybody is using that tape, Maureen. If you have any money you

:50:21.:50:28.

might want to invest in it. Yeah, I wish I had invented it! Michelle Wie

:50:29.:50:39.

had it on her leg at the US women's Open. A par for Michelle. Michelle's

with a birdie. players suffer from injuries. As you

:50:59.:51:17.

mentioned there, Wie has had a lot of injuries, Pressel has suffered,

:51:18.:51:21.

as well. You wonder are they putting their bodies through too much at a

:51:22.:51:26.

young age? Charley just leaked that one, that was a careless dropped

:51:27.:51:31.

shot there. Very, very unlike her. It was unlike her to leave the first

:51:32.:51:37.

putt short. Might be her biggest strength but also her weakness,

:51:38.:51:41.

she's a little careless. Seems to go about her business and not worry

:51:42.:51:46.

about it too much but then on those short putts sometimes she let's them

:51:47.:51:50.

slip by. She's usually good at putting that behind her. At the

:51:51.:51:52.

11th. Second shot for Pressel. Played well in this championship

:51:53.:52:08.

last year. Led after the first round. Led going into the final

:52:09.:52:14.

round but shot 76 to finish tied for fourth.

:52:15.:52:22.

She was in the deep stuff off the tee remember. Putting across her

:52:23.:52:29.

shadow. It's got to move... Not enough.

:52:30.:52:44.

Good start there with three birdies in the first six holes. That has not

:52:45.:52:52.

proved to be the easiest scoring part of the course so far.

:52:53.:53:04.

This is for a birdie. She needs some birdies on the back nine.

:53:05.:53:23.

There we go. Lives in Phoenix, Arizona. Her uncle, Tiger, bases

:53:24.:53:33.

himself in Florida, which is probably about a four-hour flight

:53:34.:53:35.

from Phoenix. Lewis, has a club in her hand that

:53:36.:53:54.

cannot reach there. There we have a look from the tee.

:53:55.:54:19.

You see the rank of three bunkers down the right side. In 2010 that

:54:20.:54:24.

right-hand rough was very sparse and the players bombed it down there.

:54:25.:54:28.

That bunker on the left is the one they need to miss off the tee. Then

:54:29.:54:33.

it's a very flat approach to this big circular green. Bunker trouble

:54:34.:54:39.

is at the front and a few humps and hollows off the back, but it's all

:54:40.:54:41.

about the tee shot. Just a sea of bunkers up there. 350

:54:42.:55:00.

to the first bunker on the left. 274 to the far one. It looks like Stacy

:55:01.:55:09.

Lewis may have stopped short. This is hit up the right.

:55:10.:55:22.

She's having a busy time that marshal down the right. Let's see if

:55:23.:55:34.

Charley can regroup after that rather careless, unnecessary putt at

:55:35.:55:39.

the last. Well, it was heading towards the

:55:40.:55:53.

right bunkers, we will have to wait and see where that one finished.

:55:54.:56:05.

You were saying earlier how well she performed at St Andrews last year.

:56:06.:56:25.

That fourth place finish got her into an automatic spot for the

:56:26.:56:29.

Solheim Cup, her fourth Solheim Cup. It was an important week for her

:56:30.:56:34.

because up to that point she was not in the team.

:56:35.:56:58.

Good shot from Michelle. She worked on the range late in the day with

:56:59.:57:12.

David Leadbetter. This is Webb on 14.

:57:13.:57:25.

That's pretty handy. She needs to pop that one in and then go for a

:57:26.:57:33.

Recari-type finish over the last four holes.

:57:34.:57:41.

Recari-type finish over the last Yesterday the cut, remember it's 65

:57:42.:57:44.

players plus ties, was sitting on plus four and frequently what you do

:57:45.:57:48.

is you double it and take one off. So the players will be looking at

:57:49.:57:52.

plus seven. But conditions are benign, so you are thinking plus

:57:53.:57:55.

six, plus seven. 302 yards to the front of the green.

:57:56.:58:16.

-- 203 yards to the front of the green. I don't think she's really

:58:17.:58:20.

going anywhere, it's a question of playing a sensible recovery, just a

:58:21.:58:24.

wedge probably towards the bunker. 120 yards ahead of her up the right.

:58:25.:58:33.

That would be the safe play. A good time to - that looks like Mark James

:58:34.:58:41.

It can't be the old boy having a kip! He is his double. You can't

:58:42.:58:58.

trust anyone. Holly Clyburn. A little bit off her right.

:58:59.:59:05.

Here is Michelle, who's going to have to battle to qualify.

:59:06.:59:51.

APPLAUSE Nothing really happening for her.

:59:52.:00:03.

Michelle famously had many years combining her golf and her studies.

:00:04.:00:13.

Was whenless in that time, but let's go to in order in order. Golf and

:00:14.:00:18.

her studies. Was whenless in that time, but let's go to in order in

:00:19.:00:22.

order -- go to Nordqvist. A fine approach giving this fine putter

:00:23.:00:27.

another birdie opportunity which she snaps up with gusto.

:00:28.:00:41.

This for a par. My goodness, a little too steamy.

:00:42.:00:56.

She's hoicked it left towards the spectators. That could be right on

:00:57.:01:06.

the edge of the thick stuff. That could leave her another difficult

:01:07.:01:16.

shot. It's a delightful day with, for this part of the world, a modest

:01:17.:01:22.

wind. With the thick rough, speedy greens, it is a monster test. But as

:01:23.:01:28.

I was told by a lady in high places, this is a Championship and we want

:01:29.:01:34.

to go to great places. It is certainly hard work. Charley Hull is

:01:35.:01:44.

in the right-hand trip. Hit it out sideways. A bit risky to go forward.

:01:45.:01:49.

She's got 201 yards to the pin. Something like a four or five iron

:01:50.:01:55.

pitching round the front edge I would guess.

:01:56.:02:09.

Stacey Lewis. Thinking about the qualifying score, if it's the six

:02:10.:02:51.

over there'll be a lot of players will be four over and six over. 1 6

:02:52.:03:08.

pin for Stacey Lewis. Yers will be four over and six over. 1 6 pin for

:03:09.:03:12.

Stacey Lewis -- 166 pin for Stacey Lewis. She's got an eight iron.

:03:13.:03:32.

A very impressive strike. Exactly as Mark James suggested. That's

:03:33.:03:44.

excellent. Two excellent shots. Lewis has the honour of wearing a

:03:45.:03:50.

green bib with the Rolex rankings on it. Number one in the world. It is a

:03:51.:03:55.

little bit like the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France. The other

:03:56.:03:59.

caddies have to make do with white and red ones. Does he get some

:04:00.:04:03.

special honour, do you know? Uehara on the right. Could be in an

:04:04.:04:24.

awkward spot. Just a word for you. If you happen to be interested in

:04:25.:04:29.

golf and you've got someone with a computer, or better still can work a

:04:30.:04:32.

computer, work out getintogolf.org. It is all going a bit Pete Tong, to

:04:33.:05:07.

be honest. 108 yards from the left rough. Although it is not a

:05:08.:05:16.

desperately difficult one, she's got to be careful here to take her

:05:17.:05:21.

medicine. Can she reach the green from her lie, Mark? I think so. But

:05:22.:05:27.

it is long rough and she seemed comfortable with her second shot. It

:05:28.:05:31.

seemed that a wedge she went with. Went with way more than that. Who

:05:32.:05:39.

knows what she's got in mind? If she gets tangled up she could end up by

:05:40.:05:46.

that white sign or towards it. You've got to be very careful here.

:05:47.:05:57.

Aiming to the green marker. Right of that by the camera tower. She's got

:05:58.:06:03.

to take the club back through the long grass and get it down, back to

:06:04.:06:05.

the ball through the long grass. Trouble again. Missed the sign,

:06:06.:06:18.

Peter, but - A dangerous shot, particularly

:06:19.:06:32.

when you were not massively powerful.

:06:33.:06:49.

The course is taking no prisoners and it is very much accuracy off the

:06:50.:06:54.

tee that's of vital importance. A long narrow target of two evil

:06:55.:07:13.

bunkers at the front of the green but you can come in bit. That might.

:07:14.:07:22.

We saw when well up the hill, came down five or six feet away, so you

:07:23.:07:25.

can be lucky. Not a big face on this bunker. The

:07:26.:07:45.

one thing you need clear is club head speed.

:07:46.:08:22.

Michelle Wie. Playing for position down the left side. That's good.

:08:23.:08:39.

Some of you will remember, if you are coming to Hoylake next week for

:08:40.:08:46.

the Open Championship, how Tiger Woods plotted his way around. I

:08:47.:08:50.

don't think he used a driver more than two or three times.

:08:51.:08:55.

Here's Pressel. Found trouble. An interesting swing

:08:56.:09:10.

there. She's so quick at changed direction at the top. So fast with

:09:11.:09:15.

her body action, it throws the club slightly outside the line. Lincicome

:09:16.:09:24.

for a par and it ain't going to do it. She's been on a good roll.

:09:25.:09:33.

Things can come to an end so quickly around here. Back to par. 4 over for

:09:34.:09:39.

the Championship. A long bogey putt now for Uehara. A

:09:40.:09:55.

strange bunker shot. Catching the sand just before the ball, a

:09:56.:09:58.

dangerous way to play this shot. Right to left, not a hard putt but

:09:59.:10:08.

lengthy. It must seem like a bit of a never ending hole for the Japanese

:10:09.:10:13.

player. It's been a truggle from the tee and it's going to take six of

:10:14.:10:22.

her not so very best shots. -- struggle.

:10:23.:10:46.

CLEAR She's got a few bogeys sprinkled in. I don't know whether

:10:47.:10:56.

the weather's deteriorated or the wind is getting more difficult or

:10:57.:11:00.

pressure is beginning to tell, but dozens of sixes and sevens of the

:11:01.:11:08.

score card. Still a lot of birdies. This is a strange mixture, looking

:11:09.:11:10.

at the score card. Stacey Lewis popping one in... Oh,

:11:11.:11:28.

Stacey, Stacey. Stays one-under par. Deserved a birdie there. Three

:11:29.:11:40.

beautiful shots. But only a four. Just not the greatest of lies.

:11:41.:11:45.

Settled down fractionally on the down slope. This is where the

:11:46.:11:51.

ability to accelerate the club quickly to get the ball up. A tricky

:11:52.:12:01.

shot. That was wonderfully played. APPLAUSE

:12:02.:12:04.

The club entered the sand just at the right angle. Everything worked

:12:05.:12:11.

out perfectly. The best front nine of the day has been posted by the

:12:12.:12:18.

amateur Georgia Hole, birdies at four, seven and nine. She's moved up

:12:19.:12:29.

to 2 under for the Championship. Charley Hull slips past the edge.

:12:30.:12:54.

Still a couple of lone scores under 70. Very few players-under par. It

:12:55.:13:06.

is a tremendous battle for 80% to qualify for 30%. Big reward for

:13:07.:13:11.

those that can do it. The main thing is footing the final 36 holes. Hose

:13:12.:13:17.

Devon, the youngster. Wanted to turn professional in April this year but

:13:31.:13:35.

says it is a struggle to find the fund to enable her to do so. Surely

:13:36.:13:39.

she will get financial support, because this is a wonderful

:13:40.:13:42.

performance from this young lady. Two under for the Championship so

:13:43.:13:47.

far. She was the coleader in the amateur stakes in this Championship

:13:48.:13:51.

last year with Lydia Ko. The youngster, who is the daughter of a

:13:52.:13:56.

plasterer from Devon, she's really loved this game ever since she was a

:13:57.:14:01.

child. She was only nine years of age. She's a real talent and going

:14:02.:14:07.

very well right at the top of the leaderboard in this great

:14:08.:14:09.

Championship. Great to see her playing so well here at Royal

:14:10.:14:14.

Birkdale. Back to another major winner, Anna Nordqvist. Just in time

:14:15.:14:20.

to join Anna and her birdie celebration. How right Hazel was.

:14:21.:14:28.

Hannah's first win was in 2009, her only major Championship win to date.

:14:29.:14:31.

She's had a couple of Wednesday this year. R only major Championship win

:14:32.:14:37.

to date. She's had a couple of Wednesday this year -- wins this

:14:38.:14:38.

year. A couple of them. Pressel's got this a yard to save

:14:39.:15:02.

her par. Yesterday she had 22 putts. These are tricky fast greens.

:15:03.:15:51.

Michelle Wie. Nicely done. That's OK. Coming up nicely.

:15:52.:16:10.

Right at the flag. Beautifully tracked. Lovely shot from Charley

:16:11.:16:15.

Hull. She was doing all right until we

:16:16.:16:37.

arrived. 164 yards. The others hit 7-irons.

:16:38.:16:58.

Uehara has a five. It will be hard for her to hit at the pin and stop

:16:59.:17:03.

it. She gave it a fair bit of height, straight for the middle of

:17:04.:17:10.

the green. Hanging on nicely. Deceptive when they use the clubs

:17:11.:17:14.

which are shaped like the old-fashioned woods. You think it

:17:15.:17:18.

must be a four or five and you suddenly find it has a six or 7-iron

:17:19.:17:24.

loft on it. Swing those arms. You don't see many people swinging like

:17:25.:17:25.

that. Get those arms moving. What do you really think of it,

:17:26.:17:43.

Maureen? It is hard work. One has to be sensible but it is painful to

:17:44.:17:49.

watch. It is so hard, I am sorry. Well, I think one of the major

:17:50.:17:53.

differences between the men's and women's golf is obviously the

:17:54.:17:58.

strength in the forearms. Rough like this is so penalising for the women.

:17:59.:18:08.

Great river. We have seen Brittany Lincicome in the rough, and she is

:18:09.:18:12.

one of the strong players. She was really struggling to advance the

:18:13.:18:16.

ball at all. As for getting control out of the rough, it is difficult. I

:18:17.:18:20.

think the Greens are drying out as well. Royal Birkdale always sets a

:18:21.:18:28.

very stiff challenge. All of the Championship courses. They are great

:18:29.:18:33.

courses, wherever they go to play. I like to climb, but I prefer the

:18:34.:18:37.

Pennines to Everest. There is no disgrace walking either way. That

:18:38.:18:44.

tee shot flying out the right has gone way to the right. You have to

:18:45.:18:55.

be... It is so penal. 3D pen pops down the right and further down the

:18:56.:18:59.

fairway couple more. A little bit of fade is ideal.

:19:00.:19:13.

This one doesn't give many birdies away. A good swing.

:19:14.:19:29.

Georgia Hall, patting out after a weak first putt. -- putting out.

:19:30.:19:44.

Well done. She played on the Curtis cup team in the States. Stacy Lewis

:19:45.:19:49.

was the very first Curtis cup player to record five wins out of five, at

:19:50.:19:53.

Saint Andrew 's, the first year that it moved to five series of matches.

:19:54.:20:00.

This sort of chip is very easy in your 20s. In your 40s, you are not

:20:01.:20:07.

sure whether to putt. She played it nicely but it did not trickle out.

:20:08.:20:16.

If you look at the yardage book in the back of her pocket, it has

:20:17.:20:20.

Razorbacks written on it. I think that is her football team. College

:20:21.:20:28.

football team, is it, Tom is giving me thumbs up. Michelle Wie.

:20:29.:20:38.

6-over. She needs this one. Come on. You have to earn your keep now,

:20:39.:20:43.

Michelle. Those secret little runs. Birdie

:20:44.:21:14.

missed. Hopefully the next one goes in.

:21:15.:21:46.

Should have been a birdie. I wonder how many people will be trying that

:21:47.:21:54.

patting style over the weekend. Not many, Peter, I don't believe. It is

:21:55.:21:59.

one thing getting into that position, another getting out of it.

:22:00.:22:35.

It is just over 18 months since Charley Hull turned professional. It

:22:36.:23:00.

is amazing, really, because already she seems to have been around for

:23:01.:23:05.

quite a long time. A golden opportunity here, after a wonderful

:23:06.:23:12.

tee shot over the flag. All the way for Charley. Excellent. A very well

:23:13.:23:22.

come birdie. She had a birdie two on the fourth as well. Back to plus

:23:23.:23:28.

three. Have you noticed how she salutes the crowd, with the hand

:23:29.:23:36.

going up? It is interesting. I think she has copied a few of Paula's

:23:37.:23:43.

moves. Interestingly enough, she said that Morgan Pressel taught her

:23:44.:23:45.

how to wave to the crowd when she was nine and she played with Pressel

:23:46.:23:55.

in this programme at live. -- at Royall the thumb.

:23:56.:24:04.

Lovely tee shot from Morgan Pressel, decent distance and down

:24:05.:24:25.

the left, giving a better angle at Pressel, decent distance and down

:24:26.:24:31.

the flag. 176 left, down breeze, so the ball will release a little bit.

:24:32.:24:40.

Always looks like she is setting up slightly for a draw. They are just

:24:41.:24:46.

trying to judge the bounce. There is a ridge which would kill it. Getting

:24:47.:24:50.

the flight just right. right. Her trademark twirl at the

:24:51.:25:25.

top of the backswing. This is a dangerous hole. Another one goes

:25:26.:25:34.

ripping by. You can become frustrated and angry.

:25:35.:25:53.

That is no good. Four birdies, and still a bit of a

:25:54.:26:11.

struggle. Michelle Wie was a major winner

:26:12.:27:06.

couple of weeks ago at the US open. That has just drifted off. If you

:27:07.:27:10.

are wondering about news of the other major winner, Thomson, who

:27:11.:27:14.

shot 72 yesterday, but opened with ten today at the 1st hole and is

:27:15.:27:18.

currently plus five for the Championship.

:27:19.:27:42.

Suzann Pettersen, unbelievable to think she has only taken two Majors

:27:43.:27:50.

so far. Play goes on here until eight p.m..

:27:51.:28:00.

Laura Davies is around for the weekend, we are delighted to say.

:28:01.:28:38.

A little uphill from Morgan Pressel. The ball seemed to hop a little.

:28:39.:28:46.

Four is always a good result on 13. It has produced a number of bogeys.

:28:47.:28:56.

Who is that? Wonderful collection of head covers and accessories. That is

:28:57.:29:01.

why golf is such a wonderful game. A good shot, you can sell the punters

is, it is wonderful. Welcome back, Tom. Thank you, Peter. Georgia Hall,

second shot to the 11th. I spoke to her before she teed off today. She

:29:24.:29:30.

was very excited, having shot 73 on day one. She turns professional

:29:31.:29:37.

after the Championship. I hope she gets some invites, Peter, because

:29:38.:29:41.

she has played tremendously. Yes, it is nice when they getting carriage

A disappointing bogey. Not too bad a tee shot or

:32:18.:32:21.

A disappointing bogey. Not too bad a be keen to get that back. That's

:32:22.:32:31.

going awfully close to the bunkers. He's going to be... That that's got

:32:32.:32:35.

to be difficult. She's got to get that up over the bunker lip. She'll

:32:36.:32:45.

be very conscious of it, Mark. It is easy to drive into it that face or

:32:46.:32:51.

into the hill. Anna Nordqvist for three birdies in a row.

:32:52.:33:02.

Not to be. Won a major Championship in 2009 and didn't have full status

:33:03.:33:09.

on the tour. Won again later that year. It took her a little while to

:33:10.:33:18.

win her third event. In fact 95 starts on the LPGA Tour. Morgan

:33:19.:33:25.

Pressel for a par. It is looking beautiful here at

:33:26.:33:47.

Royal Birkdale. Uehara has dropped down. Coming home she's had two

:33:48.:33:54.

bogeys and a double and is now in a tie for seventh place.

:33:55.:34:20.

Can Michelle Wie make the cut now? That's the big question. She's one

:34:21.:34:27.

of a few of very big names the the women's game struggling he. That's

:34:28.:34:33.

hard to believe with the way she's played over the last few weeks.

:34:34.:34:39.

Played in the final group of the final day. Lost to Lexi Thompson,

:34:40.:34:47.

who won the Women's Open at Pinehurst.

:34:48.:34:54.

Didn't work on that occasion, the new putting style. She's a member of

:34:55.:35:02.

the Bears Club, Jack Nicklaus's club in Florida. She said there are old

:35:03.:35:08.

pictures of Jack and he was quite bent over when he was in his prime.

:35:09.:35:17.

Have you ever been to the Bears Club? I have. Very smart too. Very

:35:18.:35:25.

nice indeed. It is a very fashionable place to be for golfers

:35:26.:35:28.

now in that part of the world. This is the first time I've had a

:35:29.:35:46.

good look at her swing. What part of the world is this girl from? From?

:35:47.:35:54.

She's new on the scene. Devon. An old Devonian girl. Plays at park

:35:55.:35:59.

stone. Really? They've kept it quiet from me then. There's one of those

:36:00.:36:05.

little... It didn't quite kick back on to the green, but not bad. I wish

:36:06.:36:19.

her all the very best. Looks good. Ayako Uehara is staring up the

:36:20.:36:23.

fairway. She's continuing her policy of aggression out of the rough.

:36:24.:36:30.

That's fine. Wasn't much she could do. Any chance of reaching in three?

:36:31.:36:42.

Should be able to reach. She'll have about 200 to the front but it will

:36:43.:36:45.

be a fair hit for her. The wind's not helping a lot. The other two

:36:46.:36:53.

girls could reach two. Uehara can just about get there. That looks a

:36:54.:36:57.

long way to me. Morita makes the birdie.

:36:58.:37:14.

APPLAUSE Battling to make the cut. And it is

:37:15.:37:22.

a battle, Tom. It is very hard work when they deserve everything. And

:37:23.:37:28.

it's a beautiful day. It is hard work. Mark James send they can knock

:37:29.:37:40.

this on. If anyone can do it, he can.

:37:41.:37:51.

The ball will tend to draw in across the front of the green. Oh, Mark.

:37:52.:38:06.

She knobbed it. I don't know whether that ran into a bunker or up the

:38:07.:38:13.

fairway. A tight lie. Let's see if we can spot it here. She really

:38:14.:38:21.

launched herself at it. I see. Hit that little bank in front. With the

:38:22.:38:27.

other ball, it has to climb over the bunkers. That's more difficult.

:38:28.:38:34.

Dangerous. I'm told that Charley Hall's ball is in a bunker. But

:38:35.:38:42.

information from Marshall is notoriously inconsistent. Stacey

:38:43.:38:46.

lieu sis going with an iron. She didn't clear it by much. That's not

:38:47.:38:58.

good. . The fairway is the right-hand side. A misjudgment,

:38:59.:39:02.

wrong alignment, I don't know what it is, but luckily there's someone

:39:03.:39:07.

there or it might have been a lost ball.

:39:08.:39:16.

Interesting that, Peter, the lip of the bunker got into her head,

:39:17.:39:21.

because it shoot have been a simple shot. Once you are conscious of it

:39:22.:39:29.

and you play e been a simple shot. Once you are conscious of it and you

:39:30.:39:32.

play that short -- it should have. The little one is playing her third.

:39:33.:39:35.

Let's see if she can miss trouble. Uehara, the biggest club in the bag

:39:36.:39:42.

that's not a driver. My goodness me, that was some form of mass panic.

:39:43.:39:51.

Missed that fellow in the blue shirt, but it is waist deep. I don't

:39:52.:39:58.

think you're going to enjoy it when you find it.

:39:59.:40:07.

Oh, dear. Feng on the tee at the 12th.

:40:08.:40:25.

That looked a nice shot. That's a beauty.

:40:26.:40:44.

I haven't seen anyone near the flag for a couple of which hours.

:40:45.:40:52.

Georgia Hall had an invite to play in April but couldn't afford to go,

:40:53.:41:22.

which I find quite sad really. If she's playing golf at park stone I'm

:41:23.:41:27.

sure some of the lads there I left 40 years ago, or their sons, will

:41:28.:41:29.

chip in and give her a helping hand. It is all happening here. She's

:41:30.:41:43.

topped it up the fairway but it's OK. She's hit it over the bunker, I

:41:44.:41:49.

should say. I'm getting a little tizzy here. The other two players

:41:50.:41:54.

aren't in good shape. Is your pulse racing? Does it bring back horrible

:41:55.:42:02.

memories? It does died, Peter. Not distant enough ones. Charley's

:42:03.:42:13.

third. Just when you want to bounce, it stops and when you don't want it

:42:14.:42:17.

to run, it charges through the back. It is very annoying, but that's

:42:18.:42:22.

modern links golf. It is amazing how the game has

:42:23.:42:56.

spread through the Far East. It appeared in Japan, Thailand and

:42:57.:43:03.

Korea. Over the last ten years China has blossomed. They used to creep

:43:04.:43:06.

over from Hong Kong and build a few courses. It is really taking over.

:43:07.:43:11.

Any news, Mark? What's on? There's a lot of staring happening. She's

:43:12.:43:16.

calling for an official but I'm not sure why. It is a bad line. It is

:43:17.:43:25.

not that easy to get it out from this life. The ball will be way

:43:26.:43:31.

below her feet. Oh, dear. This is very hard work. When you see the

:43:32.:43:36.

best players struggling like this, I suppose it pleases some people who

:43:37.:43:41.

think, serves them right, let them suffer.

:43:42.:43:49.

Come on Christie, roll him. In yes! A character.

:43:50.:44:12.

Pressel's left herself easy as possible putt from 12 and a bit

:44:13.:44:19.

feet. Very slight movement from the left up the hill. This is cut on an

:44:20.:44:27.

awkward spot. Very few birdies here today. Not too much to report.

:44:28.:44:34.

Uehara is sizing the shot up. Lewis appears to be waiting but it's not

:44:35.:44:39.

that easy for Uehara to get it out. It looks a horrible place. The one

:44:40.:44:44.

good thing is it is an uphill lie, which makes it easier to make

:44:45.:44:46.

contact. Fourth shot. how far it went. Georgia Hall,

:44:47.:45:19.

making par. Her instructor, Dan Frost, is her caddy this week. Is

:45:20.:45:29.

this the cavalry arriving? Oh, my goodness me. We didn't really

:45:30.:45:42.

understand. What it is is that they go every place and if you start to

:45:43.:45:47.

move one, things are moving. There is no relief from them. They are

:45:48.:45:54.

warning you to be careful not to... OK, we are going to do an

:45:55.:45:59.

unplayable. It is obviously the middle of something. What is she in

:46:00.:46:04.

the middle of, Mark? I cannot tell you. She said if you move one, you

:46:05.:46:13.

move another and it could make... I don't know what she could be in the

:46:14.:46:24.

middle of there. Yes, the referee pretty much dismissed any claim for

:46:25.:46:28.

a free drop. She has measured two club lengths and she will be playing

:46:29.:46:34.

her fourth shot. Howell is on for four. Uehara has played four. It is

:46:35.:46:38.

carnage at this hole. On some courses, the ball seems to

:46:39.:47:06.

gather into the hole. On these, it just whizzes past the edge. Time and

:47:07.:47:11.

time again, well struck putts are not going in.

:47:12.:47:18.

Lewis, had her drop. She has indeed. 100 odd yards to go. Difficult

:47:19.:47:37.

control. -- difficult to control. Very hard to get this within ten

:47:38.:47:44.

feet. The players had an note, apparently, about being careful when

:47:45.:47:49.

they are around the bramble bushes. They may move the branch ten feet

:47:50.:47:52.

from the ball but it is connected and the ball moves and they are

:47:53.:47:58.

penalised. The official from the United States golf Association was

:47:59.:48:01.

warning her that she has to be careful because she could move the

:48:02.:48:13.

golf ball and be penalised. She did not get it far, did she?

:48:14.:48:22.

You just have to log it up and let it chase up. That is going left. My

:48:23.:48:32.

goodness me! It has gone right into the edge. My goodness. When you come

:48:33.:48:38.

to the end of a perfect day. I was reading an article yesterday

:48:39.:49:10.

about royal clubs. There are 66 around the world, including Royal

:49:11.:49:15.

Birkdale. The most recent was one in Hamburg, which gained royal status

:49:16.:49:22.

in April last year. There was one in Czechoslovakia not so long ago. It

:49:23.:49:27.

used to be if one of the royal family came and had a game. The old

:49:28.:49:33.

story went long ago, couple of people thought they were royal clubs

:49:34.:49:39.

but they in fact were not. One or two stories over the years about

:49:40.:49:44.

some clubs which didn't let the right people in, or refused entry to

:49:45.:49:49.

the juke of Windsor or something. There are a few old stories rustling

:49:50.:49:55.

around. King Edward, the one who was in the early 19 hundredths, he

:49:56.:50:02.

played golf. And the Duke of Windsor, who abdicated in 1936, he

:50:03.:50:05.

would go and play and then the club would write and say, can we say we

:50:06.:50:10.

are a royal club because you visited? Buckingham Palace would

:50:11.:50:14.

say, yes, you can. The Duke of York has promoted a couple of clubs since

:50:15.:50:18.

taking up the game. It is a nice thing to have. The latest in a

:50:19.:50:28.

succession of miserable lives for Uehara. She has to hit this quite

:50:29.:50:33.

hard -- miserable lives. That is a great result. A little

:50:34.:50:43.

unlucky that it just pulled up. She just could not make it stop. She

:50:44.:51:22.

has fallen outside of the top 50 in the world, struggling over the last

:51:23.:51:24.

year or so. Stacy Lewis, fifth shot. I think Mark James was right, there

:51:25.:51:40.

is a bit of a melt down here. I think the golfing brains are

:51:41.:51:46.

becoming a little bit scrambled. Open Championship next week. Tickets

:51:47.:51:51.

are available on the gate. The great thing about the Championship, they

:51:52.:51:56.

don't put a limit on how many people come along. If you are under 16,

:51:57.:52:02.

accompanied by a grown-up, you can come for nothing. If they are

:52:03.:52:09.

paying! Play will start at about half past six and there is something

:52:10.:52:12.

for everybody. If the weather is nice, which we all pray for. Well, I

:52:13.:52:25.

wouldn't know... I was going to say I wouldn't know whether that was

:52:26.:52:27.

granny or grandchild from That was quite a haircut, wasn't it?

:52:28.:52:52.

They are all traipsing about. They are going to break camp in a minute.

:52:53.:53:02.

Stop it! Shanshan Feng. First player from mainland China to qualify for

:53:03.:53:08.

the LG PA Tour and went on to win a major a few years ago, as Hazel

:53:09.:53:10.

mentioned. She was a winner at the end of last

:53:11.:53:27.

year. That was done in Naples, Florida, where they play the shark

:53:28.:53:31.

shoot out. Great place to be in November. Bogey putt for Lewis, and

:53:32.:53:42.

another one slips by. You will remember this 15th hole.

:53:43.:53:49.

What do you think, one player starts to struggle and it brings the whole

:53:50.:53:56.

group down? It can do. I have been laughed at many times, but I have

:53:57.:54:00.

always said I think sport is wonderful when it goes well, and

:54:01.:54:05.

when it does not it is cruel. It is the hardest profession. I watched

:54:06.:54:08.

the Cricketers and golfers, and you lose form and dozens of people tell

:54:09.:54:13.

you what you are doing wrong. It is not easy. Wonderful when it is

:54:14.:54:26.

wonderful. Coming round. It has stopped on the bank.

:54:27.:54:38.

It is going to be a triple bogey for Uehara. What a difference a day

:54:39.:54:50.

makes. Eight. We just said when she was on the tee, one of the

:54:51.:54:53.

straight, good drivers. You said if you are short you want to be

:54:54.:54:58.

straight. Look at that, six, three, eight. It brings you down. What a

:54:59.:55:10.

struggle. You have to collect your thoughts before reaching the 16th,

:55:11.:55:12.

and don't blow some more shots. 21, full house. Now they really have

:55:13.:55:52.

to regroup, because they could have thrown away the chance of being here

:55:53.:55:57.

for the weekend if this continues. She is very determined, so it

:55:58.:56:02.

wouldn't surprise me if she went birdie, eagle, birdie to finish, if

:56:03.:56:05.

something kicks into gear. Not often we see the umbrella for

:56:06.:56:22.

the sunshine. It has been grand, a fascinating day. Maureen is

:56:23.:56:31.

adjusting her dress and is going to sit down and give us the benefit of

:56:32.:56:34.

her great wisdom. She will tell me to shut up, but I love her dearly. I

:56:35.:56:39.

leave you in charge for a few minutes and look what you do! That

:56:40.:56:44.

may bring you up-to-date with Alexey Thompson. She shot 72 yesterday and

:56:45.:56:50.

opened ten, five this morning, going 7-over par. She has had all par,

:56:51.:56:55.

birdied the seventh, ninth and 15th, back to plus four for the

:56:56.:57:02.

Championship. Georgia Hall, a neat little chip but it has run on too

:57:03.:57:09.

much. Last year's British amateur champion. Enjoyed her time in

:57:10.:57:14.

America in the Curtis cup this year. That has trundled up nicely.

:57:15.:57:36.

Michelle's best finish in this Championship came here at Royal

:57:37.:57:39.

Birkdale the first time she played as an amateur in 2005, when she

:57:40.:57:42.

finished tied for third that week. I would imagine there are a few deep

:57:43.:58:01.

breaths being taken on the 16th tee. Ever aggressive, she is out

:58:02.:58:04.

breaths being taken on the 16th tee. driver. She has hit it a long way up

:58:05.:58:08.

in the air and it looks pretty good to me. Perfect. Have you recovered

:58:09.:58:14.

from the 15th? It was entertaining. Everything happened. Someone even

:58:15.:58:20.

got a ruling because of a plant. Most peculiar. There was a stunned

:58:21.:58:26.

disbelief of silence from the spectators. They are now laughing at

:58:27.:58:37.

me. I think Tom is right. Stacy Lewis is not world number one for

:58:38.:58:40.

nothing and the measure of a great player is how they bounce back from

:58:41.:58:41.

adversity. So let's just watch her go over

:58:42.:58:51.

these last three holes. regroup. That looks more like it.

:58:52.:59:42.

Straight up the middle. Christina Kim from the back of 13.

:59:43.:00:02.

The shoulder on the left-hand side will throw the ball to the right. In

:00:03.:00:10.

fact she missed that shoulder. That was coming back t'other way. A

:00:11.:00:16.

wonderful character. Effervescent but did admit last year to suffering

:00:17.:00:22.

quite badly from depression and decided she would

:00:23.:00:25.

quite badly from depression and about it to give those in the same

:00:26.:00:29.

situation a bit of hope. She's a wonderful character.

:00:30.:00:39.

Georgia Hall, the third shot to the back of the green. This for a bogey.

:00:40.:00:57.

A little fist pump. You can tell how much it means for her. This is a

:00:58.:01:06.

huge stage for Georgia Hall and she is right up there at the moment.

:01:07.:01:12.

Just got to keep the doubles off the card. A good chance to finish with a

:01:13.:01:25.

few birdies. A wee scuttler for Michelle. Nicely done. A linksy-type

:01:26.:01:34.

shot, that one. I first saw Michelle playing in the Curtis cup in 2004 at

:01:35.:01:41.

form by. She could play those little links-type shots even when she was

:01:42.:01:43.

just a 14-year-old. Let's see if we can see who is going

:01:44.:02:11.

to be with us at the weekend. Only the top 65 players and those who are

:02:12.:02:19.

tied. Laura Davies safely under that cut line. At the moment it looks

:02:20.:02:24.

like it is going be plus five or plus six. There's a lot of golf to

:02:25.:02:32.

be played here at Royal Birkdale. Last night there was 12-and-a-half

:02:33.:02:36.

hours of golf. It looks like we are going that way today. The

:02:37.:02:59.

It's been a real battle in the sunshine here in Southport today,

:03:00.:03:10.

particularly for Ayako Uehara. Approached the 16, trying to bounce

:03:11.:03:17.

back, but that needs too hang on. That's going to be on the grass. It

:03:18.:03:24.

is amazing what this game can do to you, Maureen. Yes, when it is not

:03:25.:03:28.

going your way it doesn't seem to go your way. But the three of them

:03:29.:03:33.

suddenly turned into other players on the 15th. It was suddenly as if

:03:34.:03:39.

they had somebody else's arms on. Let's hope normal service is resumed

:03:40.:03:43.

here. She's measuring the ball against the flag. That's why she

:03:44.:03:50.

really does strike a glorious number of sound, crisp iron shots.

:03:51.:04:10.

Stacey Lewis. From what I've seep, pretty much the best swing in cey

:04:11.:04:18.

Lewis. From what I've seep, pretty much the best swing in the field --

:04:19.:04:21.

from what I've seen. Good turn, late hit, balanced, powerful, she's got

:04:22.:04:27.

110 to the pin. Probably playing 120 with this breeze.

:04:28.:04:48.

Stacey has an incredible story. She suffered from scoliosis and wore a

:04:49.:04:56.

back brace from 11 to 18. She underwent surgery to insert a rod in

:04:57.:05:03.

her back,s which still there. She didn't know if she was going to be

:05:04.:05:09.

able to walk again, let alone play the game. She said, I have to take

:05:10.:05:12.

advantage of which all the opportunities I have because I don't

:05:13.:05:17.

know how long I'm going to be able to play golf, and she's the world

:05:18.:05:25.

number one. She had a metal rod and five screws into her back. I think

:05:26.:05:32.

she sets off a few alarms at airports

:05:33.:05:34.

-- at airports now. Needed another hop. The bunkers here

:05:35.:05:45.

are very gathering. Shenshe, in on tour is known to her

:05:46.:06:05.

friends as Jenny. The only Chinese player ever of the won a major on

:06:06.:06:08.

any tour. That will do. She's a really fun

:06:09.:06:28.

character. She speaks tremendous English. A very bubbly character.

:06:29.:06:35.

Does she get as much adulation in China as the Japanese players get

:06:36.:06:39.

this their home country? From talking to her, I think golf is

:06:40.:06:45.

growing in China. The young chap to played in the Masters, and we have

:06:46.:06:52.

another Chinese player on the LPGA Tour, who's been inspired by

:06:53.:06:59.

Shenshen, in the run-up to the Olympics, that's going to inspire a

:07:00.:07:04.

lot of players around the world. And it allows a lot of funding in

:07:05.:07:09.

countries that only fund Olympic sports. Prior to golf brought into

:07:10.:07:14.

the Olympics it wasn't funded in certain countries, but now it is in

:07:15.:07:18.

the Olympics, you get Government funding. That is key. Third shot of

:07:19.:07:30.

Uehara. You always need trailblazers to take the golf into new countries.

:07:31.:07:39.

Feng is a great ambassador for China.

:07:40.:07:50.

Wie trying to knock this one in on the 15th. This might be to get her

:07:51.:08:00.

inside the cut line. You never quite know.

:08:01.:08:14.

She flattened her putter by 4.5 degrees prior to the US Open. David

:08:15.:08:23.

Leadbetter had been telling her to do that for about a month, but she

:08:24.:08:27.

said, it takes me a month before I listen to David. He was dead right.

:08:28.:08:33.

He must have the patience of a saint. He's been telling her things

:08:34.:08:38.

all his golfing life. A wonderful coach.

:08:39.:08:44.

Not bouncing back quite with a birdie. 14th hole. Georgia, a good

:08:45.:09:04.

chance to save par. She hasn't played in this rarified atmosphere

:09:05.:09:11.

too often, but she with Lydia Ko shared the salver last year and

:09:12.:09:16.

seems to blossom in this environment. That was never going

:09:17.:09:24.

anywhere else. She's fired up by that dropped shot at the last.

:09:25.:09:33.

I'm not sure how long we've been on this hole but it can't be far off 25

:09:34.:09:42.

minutes. 255 to the flag at 15. Wind is straight off the right. If she

:09:43.:09:49.

hits it Sunday best she might scuttle it near the front edge. A

:09:50.:10:04.

sweet hit. A beautiful shot. That must have been pretty near her

:10:05.:10:09.

Sunday best, Ken. A lovely flight. Just enough cut on it to hold it

:10:10.:10:20.

into the breeze. T caddy, his any more name is Rock. A big fella. He

:10:21.:10:24.

used to caddy for Donald Trump. You minced her battle with

:10:25.:10:50.

depression. It is pretty serious. She made an attempt to take her own

:10:51.:10:55.

life. It was a serious problem she had, so it is great to see Christina

:10:56.:11:01.

bouncing back to her usual safe. Uehara, a good save for par off that

:11:02.:11:13.

15th hole. 68 on day one. She's fallen right back to a tie for 29th

:11:14.:11:16.

at 3 over for the Championship. Apparently next week we are going to

:11:17.:11:43.

find out how the Olympic teams will be put together, the qualifying will

:11:44.:11:48.

be announced. It is quite a complicated procedure isn't it? Yes,

:11:49.:11:53.

a lot of talk how they are going to do it, two players from each country

:11:54.:11:57.

and they are going to use the world rankings. And then you will get

:11:58.:12:06.

players like Stephanie Meadow in the same situation as Rory McIlroy.

:12:07.:12:13.

Georgia. That was a shame after a very good bunker shot.

:12:14.:12:22.

Level par for the Championship. Four holes left. A good test now to see

:12:23.:12:31.

how she responds to back to back bogeys. The end of the course is

:12:32.:12:36.

where you can make your score. Lift be interesting to see how she can

:12:37.:12:41.

bounce back. Good news for her if she shines on the bigger stages.

:12:42.:12:51.

Catriona Matthew partnered with Christina Kim in the final round in

:12:52.:12:59.

2009 at Royal Lytham. Leading the applause for Matthew as she came up

:13:00.:13:03.

the final hole. A very sporting player.

:13:04.:13:34.

In the last few moments there's been a significant move in this

:13:35.:13:41.

Championship. Just out of range of our cameras. Mo Martin has had an

:13:42.:13:45.

eagle at the par fiver sixth and followed that with a birdie at the

:13:46.:13:51.

7th. Suddenly out of nowhere it is a three-shot lead for the 31-year-old

:13:52.:13:55.

from California. This is the player that uses the long putter. Always

:13:56.:14:06.

has, and is renowned for her accuracy. This is only the third

:14:07.:14:10.

time she's taken part in this great Championship. She's made a decisive

:14:11.:14:12.

move. Back to our world number one, Stacey

:14:13.:14:21.

Lewis. signalling is straight. Oh, dear.

:14:22.:14:47.

That popped up and just settled at its own plug mark. She won't be

:14:48.:14:52.

going far from there, that's for certain.

:14:53.:15:09.

finish for state C Lewis. Unusual to see her compounding errors. --

:15:10.:15:12.

Stacey Lewis. That will count as a fairway hit.

:15:13.:15:47.

The stats of all Department of the game are kept by the Tours and the

:15:48.:15:49.

players. -- departments of the game. She has some green to work with. I

:15:50.:16:26.

think she is far enough back. The turf is not too bad over there.

:16:27.:16:34.

Morgan Pressel has this for an eagle at the 15th.

:16:35.:16:45.

We have not had an eagle yet at the 15th hole.

:16:46.:16:55.

She got married in January to a tournament director. Where do you

:16:56.:17:07.

get those chairs? He looks like he is out in the middle of nowhere.

:17:08.:17:19.

Looks like he has a tournament sweater on. I hope he wasn't

:17:20.:17:25.

supposed to be working. We may have just got him in trouble.

:17:26.:17:38.

Anna Nordqvist, putting from off the green. Picking the ball out of the

:17:39.:17:41.

hole. Saving a bogey, but at 6-over par,

:17:42.:17:56.

that could be useful come the end of the round. She is right on the cut

:17:57.:18:00.

line, one of the players battling with the golf course, trying to be

:18:01.:18:08.

here for the weekend. I think that was actually Nordqvist birdieing 15.

:18:09.:18:13.

They were on the par-5 with Morgan Pressel. Michelle Wie, we have

:18:14.:18:20.

heard, has just had to take an unplayable lie. She is suspiciously

:18:21.:18:27.

near Arnold Palmer's plaque. She has dropped under penalty. This will be

:18:28.:18:32.

her third shot. Uphill to the table top green. The flag is 22 yards on,

:18:33.:18:41.

hugging the left-hand side. You want to hit it centre of the green, not

:18:42.:18:43.

left of centre. Well... Everything is a bit of a

:18:44.:19:06.

struggle at the moment. Pressel, showing us how the 15th

:19:07.:19:29.

should be played. Two glorious shots to the front edge of the green and

:19:30.:19:32.

two putts. First birdie of the day. That will do very well. Didn't

:19:33.:20:08.

expect to get up in two. Was laying up, in fact, to her favourite

:20:09.:20:12.

pitching distance. The group ahead still on the 17th green.

:20:13.:20:20.

Uehara has played her second shot and hit a utility club well short of

:20:21.:20:28.

the green. 290 to the green, could not reach. The others are sizing up

:20:29.:20:34.

their shots. 226 front for Stacey Lewis, 219 front for Charley Hull.

:20:35.:20:40.

They are waiting for the group in front, who have had problems on this

:20:41.:20:43.

hole, apparently. So it will be a couple of minutes. That is the

:20:44.:20:49.

Alexey Thompson group ahead. Interesting to see how she finishes.

:20:50.:21:03.

The right to line, but not running out enough. She will be very well

:21:04.:21:12.

aware of the significant of this upcoming putt. -- the significance.

:21:13.:22:11.

Would you take a level par at the end of the week, Maureen? Yes, I

:22:12.:22:20.

would be very tempted to take that. I hear rumours that Sunday's weather

:22:21.:22:22.

might be challenging. That was a conservative play, but it

:22:23.:22:42.

was within her compass to have got there. It is not to like Charley to

:22:43.:22:46.

not be aggressive. I am wondering if they are a bit wary of the golf

:22:47.:22:50.

course now. Discretion is the better part of valour. Karrie Webb for a

:22:51.:23:03.

birdie at the 18th. This might be to play on the weekend.

:23:04.:23:14.

She is going to hope that it does go to 7-over. Among the players outside

:23:15.:23:27.

the cut line, Stephanie Meadow, Cheyenne Woods. Catriona Matthew

:23:28.:23:38.

really struggled today and will not be here at the weekend.

:23:39.:23:49.

That was pretty much as well as she could do from there. The flag and

:23:50.:24:14.

the green surface sitting many feet above her. A double bogey, a finish

:24:15.:24:26.

for the Englishwoman. Englishwoman. 82. Ouch! Plus nine for the

:24:27.:24:33.

Championship. 71 yesterday, but unfortunately packing her bags.

:24:34.:25:01.

The flag today is at the back of the green, and that is a good shot.

:25:02.:25:09.

Might finish with a couple of word is. -- birdies.

:25:10.:25:24.

Very sad to see the departure of all three players from this group.

:25:25.:25:51.

Lewis decided to lay up on this 17th.

:25:52.:26:04.

Has she got the pace? Well, on the 17th, there has been a bit of a move

:26:05.:26:18.

by the French player, who was in the group ahead of Stacey Lewis. Just

:26:19.:26:24.

eagled 17, and has reached level par. 1-under for the day.

:26:25.:26:39.

That could be good. Well done. Three birdie chances coming up.

:26:40.:26:58.

First look at Mo Martin today. This is the eighth.

:26:59.:27:22.

That putter must be working pretty well for her. We talk to her after

:27:23.:27:28.

the round on first day and she was raving about the golf course, really

:27:29.:27:34.

enjoys the layout of Royal Birkdale. First time she has visited here, and

:27:35.:27:38.

she says every hole is a test. Maybe that is the attitude you need.

:27:39.:27:47.

Very interesting, Maureen, that she is a very short hitter but she is at

:27:48.:27:55.

the top of the leaderboard. Yes, the long hitters, if they decide to

:27:56.:27:58.

carry a lot of cross bunkers, staggered bunkers at the side of the

:27:59.:28:03.

fairways, they are landing in very narrow areas. Some of them will

:28:04.:28:06.

choose to go to rescue clubs and take different clubs, where the

:28:07.:28:13.

shorter hitters will hit anyway. I love the way you can make your

:28:14.:28:16.

decisions and plot your way round the golf course. You can have any

:28:17.:28:20.

kind of game here and produce a good score. Mo Martin went birdie, birdie

:28:21.:28:27.

at six and seven. There was a mistake in the scoring, so she is

:28:28.:28:31.

5-under par. Not the eagle at the 6th. A good time to welcome back

:28:32.:28:42.

Peter. Thank you. The drama continues and there are still four

:28:43.:28:48.

hours to come. So it is a long day. The struggle will continue.

:28:49.:28:57.

Let's hear from Mark. Three lovely shots from this group, beautifully

:28:58.:29:08.

controlled. Charley Hull hit a low fade with a wedge, a very

:29:09.:29:14.

accomplished shot. Stacey Lewis as a birdie attempt from 12 feet, which

:29:15.:29:18.

should move a little from right to left.

:29:19.:29:36.

That was a good save after driving into the bunker.

:29:37.:29:51.

Should have had a bit of a read from that, coming from the same side of

:29:52.:30:02.

the hole. That was a par from Lewis. I lost track of things. Seems to be

:30:03.:30:11.

moving slowly all of a. Is Uehara I'm pretty certain does have there

:30:12.:30:16.

for a boy. This is pretty much on Stacey Lewis's line, so it should

:30:17.:30:19.

edge right to left. Uehara I'm pretty certain does have

:30:20.:30:44.

a birdie. Only a five. Five. Disappointing that. One more chance

:30:45.:30:46.

of a birdie. This section of the green plays

:30:47.:31:16.

right to left. The camera angle showed us exactly that, Mark. Very

:31:17.:31:25.

frustrating. You could argue it was a bit short of pace and it Wombled

:31:26.:31:32.

away. A few footprints around the hole but I don't think that was the

:31:33.:31:37.

cause of it. To the 16th. Morgan Pressel's second

:31:38.:31:41.

shot. Excellent. She really does with whip

:31:42.:31:57.

into them. Turns and gives it a lively spring. She's aggressive

:31:58.:32:04.

through the ball. She's a bubbly character. A correction of Mo

:32:05.:32:08.

Martin's score. She's completed 8 holes, so she has enough

:32:09.:32:13.

two-and-a-half hours before she shuts up shop for the night. You can

:32:14.:32:21.

see how players run par. Four only, so it's been a hard day. We thought

:32:22.:32:27.

it was going to be an easier day. In fact the play on the second nine

:32:28.:32:37.

ought it was going to be an easier day. In fact the play on the second

:32:38.:32:40.

nine holes - Georgia Hall's been going well, the young alture.

:32:41.:32:47.

There's been a huge pile-up since that mess-up on the 15th.

:32:48.:33:12.

That's fine, scam perking down the middle. .

:33:13.:33:18.

Always comes up and over with the right should interher

:33:19.:33:41.

follow-through. Down the -- Her her follow-through. Too good

:33:42.:33:52.

a drive. She probably thinks that's a corker. So disappointing. Do you

:33:53.:33:58.

like this action, Peter? I do. I think it shows great promise. Can't

:33:59.:34:10.

come much better than that. Once you learn to hit it you learn how to

:34:11.:34:16.

play. That's the old saying. How very true.

:34:17.:34:26.

I'm amazed, the wind fluctuates a little bit, but the three par-fives

:34:27.:34:34.

in the last four holes, there's a chance of getting fours and things,

:34:35.:34:39.

but on the other hand there's umpteen players who've taken sixes,

:34:40.:34:46.

sevens and eights. Littered with sevens. That really knocks the

:34:47.:35:01.

stuffing out of you. This is a look at Gwladys Nocera. Eagled the last.

:35:02.:35:08.

She's played very well today. Only had two dropped shots, one birdie

:35:09.:35:13.

and an eagle. A good one here, coming in through the middle. That's

:35:14.:35:15.

a beauty! Well done, Gwladys Nocera. Not a very French-sounding name,

:35:16.:35:37.

Gladys. It is a French spelling. Come on, Pressel. Putting on the

:35:38.:35:42.

same line as her playing partner, so she should have an idea of the

:35:43.:35:51.

breakment come on, Morgan. -- come on, Morgan. Two par fivers to come.

:35:52.:35:54.

Lovely. Michelle Wie is in desperate

:35:55.:36:21.

trouble. She's 8 over. I think it will be looking for a flight home.

:36:22.:36:23.

Maybe tonight. ooking for three. Three -- there for

:36:24.:36:33.

three. It can be a lonely place, a golf

:36:34.:37:23.

course. A wonderful drive, right up the face. Had to come out sideways.

:37:24.:37:51.

Charley hit her tee shot out of bounds yesterday. We are told this

:37:52.:37:59.

is a provisional that she's played. Surely she's not going for another

:38:00.:38:17.

reload. Word that they must get one of those two tee shots.

:38:18.:38:40.

Here's Nocera from France. Two lovely shots. Is she going to get

:38:41.:38:48.

it? What about that! That would have been a 3-3 finish. Eagle birdie.

:38:49.:39:04.

Fantastic! APPLAUSE.

:39:05.:39:14.

A wonderful finish. Home in 35, finishing 3 for 70. They don't get

:39:15.:39:19.

much closer. It looks to be missing left. Seems to go left and suddenly

:39:20.:39:25.

it slows down and you think, it must go. And by such margins

:39:26.:39:37.

Championships are won and lost. Par, par eagle birdie, well done. You are

:39:38.:39:45.

not a Gwladys Nocera after all. Michelle back on 17. This is her

:39:46.:39:53.

fourth shot. She needs to get up and down here and have a bit of eagle

:39:54.:39:58.

mammic at the last to be around for the weekend.

:39:59.:40:20.

It's all been a bit of a struggle. Not too many players have converted

:40:21.:40:30.

the last four holes into a barnstorming finish, with Beatriz

:40:31.:40:36.

Recari birdying three of those and Gwladys Nocera finishing eagle

:40:37.:40:41.

birdie. But there's been more of a sprinkling of sixes and sevens. This

:40:42.:40:46.

is Stephanie Meadow on the home green playing alongside Gwladys

:40:47.:40:49.

Nocera and Lexi Thomson. She was third in the US Open, third

:40:50.:41:12.

at the Buckinghamshire last week. Made a great start. A delightful

:41:13.:41:18.

player, a delightful family. They are so excited for her to be out

:41:19.:41:23.

here and taking her first steps in her professional career. This is for

:41:24.:41:33.

par for Meadow. I don't think we'll see her at the weekend. No, but it

:41:34.:41:43.

will be back to Northern Ireland for her feet up for a week or ten days

:41:44.:41:49.

before going back across the Pond. Where does he play her golf over

:41:50.:41:54.

there? She's from royal Portrush but moved to the United States at the

:41:55.:41:58.

age of 14, eight years ago her parents moved everything out. Gave

:41:59.:42:04.

it all up, poured their all into her career and it is great to see it

:42:05.:42:09.

coming off. Charley, what are you doing? Into her first ball has gone

:42:10.:42:18.

out of bounds. I'm assuming she's asking if she can get a drop from

:42:19.:42:24.

the fence. I'm guessing it is an out of bounds fence. She will probably

:42:25.:42:29.

have to take it as unplayable and then she'll be playing six. Is this

:42:30.:42:45.

her first four, or it is her second? This'll be her second. Uehara is

:42:46.:42:55.

just about to hit it. Well Charley, my girl, three stinking drives

:42:56.:42:59.

you've hit off the last hole, so a bit of work to do in that

:43:00.:43:03.

department. She can't have a free drop here. This must be a penalty

:43:04.:43:06.

drop. Back to the relative tranquillity of

:43:07.:43:14.

15. I like that swing. She's hoicked it

:43:15.:43:33.

away. It may be alright. That's OK. No harm done.

:43:34.:43:43.

We've been documenting Thomson's troubles since she opened with a

:43:44.:43:55.

ten. That one dribbles away. That's a closing par. 77. I must say,

:43:56.:44:00.

ten. That one dribbles away. That's that's not bad. Five over for

:44:01.:44:04.

today's round and she was seven over after two holes. She's done very

:44:05.:44:12.

well to qualify for the final 36 after that miserable start. Feng has

:44:13.:44:22.

just launched her second. Straight over the gorse bushes. The Marshall

:44:23.:44:32.

is signalling that it has gone underground I believe.

:44:33.:44:41.

Our Championship leader. . Is that the elevated green? Very nice.

:44:42.:45:08.

drop. No relief from out of bounds fences or anything of that ilk, so

:45:09.:45:12.

she's playing her fifth. Meanwhile, Stacey Lewis had 213 to the pin and

:45:13.:45:19.

hit the most glorious four I am straight at it. Looks to be within

:45:20.:45:26.

15 feet for eagle. -- for IM. Inexplicable. Stacey Lewis was just

:45:27.:45:31.

middle of the fairway, and Charley Hull was almost 60 yards right of

:45:32.:45:41.

that. Michelle Wie cannot buy a putt at the moment. I think time is

:45:42.:45:55.

running out for her. Six on 16. She has that for six on 17. Expensive

:45:56.:46:00.

mistakes late in the round, no time to recover.

:46:01.:46:08.

Quite a tilt on the ninth green for Mo Martin, Peter. Yes, the Greens

:46:09.:46:16.

are strangely deceptive. They look relatively flat but there is

:46:17.:46:17.

movement everywhere. Swinging across just at the end.

:46:18.:46:35.

When they lose pace they wander away. But that is a nice four. We

:46:36.:46:41.

have had about four eights at the 9th hole today. She is going along

:46:42.:46:45.

nicely. Now she has another nine holes to play.

:46:46.:46:55.

It could be the best part of the day, if the wind drops. The back

:46:56.:47:03.

nine has certainly taken its toll today. We thought it would be a bit

:47:04.:47:07.

easier but, my word, it has not been the case.

:47:08.:47:15.

Charley Hull is coming up the fairway having hit a pretty good

:47:16.:47:36.

fifth shot. She now has 98 yards to the pin. Lee Hara is about ten yards

:47:37.:47:44.

short and Stacey Lewis has an equal opportunity. -- Uehara is ten yards

:47:45.:47:45.

short. That just died on her. It was a good

:47:46.:47:57.

idea, not quite hard enough. The spectators are still hanging on.

:47:58.:48:24.

They have enjoyed sunshine and good hospitality today. I must say, some

:48:25.:48:32.

of them must be almost shocked by the number of sevens, eights and

:48:33.:48:34.

nines, and even a ten. One final pitch for Charley Hull.

:48:35.:48:57.

She hit a beauty at the last. This is a similar shot.

:48:58.:49:04.

Does not want a silly shot here. She could drop three or four and maybe

:49:05.:49:12.

missed the cut. That will do. That is there for six. So she might well

:49:13.:49:18.

recover and be here for the weekend. Let's hope so. It is beautiful but

:49:19.:49:25.

deceptively tough. Gwladys Nocera is with me. It might

:49:26.:49:39.

have been eagle, eagle but for a whisker away. Reflect on the round.

:49:40.:49:44.

I played pretty solid, did not miss too many greens. I was pretty good

:49:45.:49:48.

with my driver. One mistake on 11, but the rest was solid. My putting

:49:49.:49:54.

is here, so it is good. I love this place. I try to make the most of it

:49:55.:50:01.

and go on. It is so beautiful here. It is the best. Your putting was

:50:02.:50:08.

certainly on on the last couple of holes. Let's see this eagle attempt.

:50:09.:50:14.

I thought about the speed. When I saw it was going in the right

:50:15.:50:19.

direction, I had some hope. I don't understand that, but... I guess that

:50:20.:50:26.

is golf. You said how much you love the course, and it was here that you

:50:27.:50:30.

achieved your best result in this Championship. Why do you love it and

:50:31.:50:34.

could it be something to do with the opportunities for scoring on the

:50:35.:50:38.

last few holes? I think it is very fair. It is the fairest links course

:50:39.:50:45.

I know. I have not played all of them, obviously. To me, it is very

:50:46.:50:50.

fair. If you hit good shots, you get good rewards and I like that. We had

:50:51.:50:55.

good weather so far, so you just take it and go. Many people will be

:50:56.:51:01.

scratching their heads and saying, beautiful conditions and yet only

:51:02.:51:06.

seven of you under-par. What is your reason for it? You have to play

:51:07.:51:11.

pretty smart. You cannot be too aggressive. The rough is really

:51:12.:51:17.

high, and tough. The bunkers, you can get against the lip and have no

:51:18.:51:23.

shot. It seems easy but I have to say it is a tough one. They set it

:51:24.:51:30.

up really hard this year. I don't know. I just play golf and tried to

:51:31.:51:34.

hit every shot as good as I can, but it is calf -- it is tough. Thank

:51:35.:51:37.

you. It is a frustrating game, it really

:51:38.:51:47.

is. You get a good view of the bunkers.

:51:48.:52:06.

When we say how difficult it is when you are in the rough to get into

:52:07.:52:10.

that narrow gap. Two bunkers on the left, one on the right and a couple

:52:11.:52:18.

up by the green. Not an easy hole. When the wind is against,

:52:19.:52:19.

particularly. Not quite, but it is a closing

:52:20.:52:39.

birdie for Lewis. So after seven on the 15th, she manages to finish with

:52:40.:52:46.

one more birdie. I think we will give her that shortly. That will be

:52:47.:52:56.

for a closing 74. Four bogeys and a seven. That is not too bad.

:52:57.:53:17.

We have seen a lot of players leave that short. That just ran out of

:53:18.:53:26.

speed. But she read it well. She did.

:53:27.:53:35.

7-over so far with this to get one back.

:53:36.:54:17.

That should give Charley Hull some help, because she was coming from

:54:18.:54:28.

the opposite side of the hole. This is for a seven, if I am correct. If

:54:29.:54:34.

she gets this, she will have every number on her card, from two to

:54:35.:54:35.

seven. It looks as if it might be just left

:54:36.:54:41.

of centre. Well done. 76 for Charley Hull.

:54:42.:55:03.

5-over for the Championship. All a bit of a struggle.

:55:04.:55:12.

Mother said there'd be days like these.

:55:13.:55:34.

79 for the overnight leader. Such a disappointing day. Level par out,

:55:35.:55:45.

but a Krul back nine. 44. 1-under fives.

:55:46.:55:58.

Stacey Lewis, she had seven at the 15th and could not birdie either of

:55:59.:56:08.

the last two. But she will be here for the weekend.

:56:09.:56:15.

As they say farewell on the 18th, we have to say farewell shortly at the

:56:16.:56:21.

end of our second day of transmission from Royal Birkdale,

:56:22.:56:25.

with the news that Mo Martin has reached the turn and has done so at

:56:26.:56:29.

two under and is a two shot lead up.

:56:30.:56:41.

We have seen great things from Georgia Hall, who is hoping to turn

:56:42.:56:49.

pro very soon. She really is giving them a run for their money.

:56:50.:57:19.

Those on plus six will be in for the moment but there are many big

:57:20.:57:25.

names, including Michelle Wie, who looked to be heading home, which

:57:26.:57:28.

will be a shame for the US women's open champion. The Royal Liverpool

:57:29.:57:33.

Golf Club, just under 30 miles down the coast, on Sunday night after the

:57:34.:57:39.

conclusion of this Championship. There was a huge turnout last time.

:57:40.:57:44.

Tickets still available on the gate and kids go free if they are 16 and

:57:45.:57:47.

under and accompanied by an adult. That is it for the second day of

:57:48.:58:38.

this great Championship at a glorious Royal Birkdale. We will be

:58:39.:58:42.

back at one o'clock on BBC One tomorrow. I hope you will share

:58:43.:58:46.

moving day with us. In the meantime, bye-bye.
