Day 3 Golf: Women's British Open

We are right in the middle of golf's competition. Through the

Wallasey tunnel, Royal Birkdale Golf Club is where it is at this weekend.

The 39th event of the British women's open. We have been enjoying

some gorgeous weather is gorgeous venue. Ice cream weather, sunny and

warm, the sea breezes of the Irish Sea have been cooling. Ideal

committee would think for low scoring. Yet, even without its

strongest defence, the wind, the narrow fairways and thick tangling

brass have asked some searching questions of the top professionals,

and quite a few haven't found the right answers. -- ideal, you would

think for low scoring. APPLAUSE -- tangling grass. It is getting

really bad now. It has all been a bit of a struggle. There is to be no

US Open or British open double former shall we. Karrie Webb,

Katrina Matthew, and Katrina Matthew will not be there either. So who is

going to get this claret jug? Perhaps 1 of these names. --

Catriona Matthew. What a beauty, what an absolutely beautiful putt. A

birdie at the 18th, and a great day for her. Birdie birdie finish, and a

72. At the halfway stage, 31 year old Martin is in pole position with

a healthy 3 shot advantage. Could America be on track to claim the 1st

3 majors in women's golf of the 1st time since 1999? Beatriz Recari got

a birdie on the last 3 yesterday. Alongside her, the former US Open

champion, Ryu. Only 9 players under par so far, and amongst them in the

group that 5 shot of the league is the defending champion and world

number 1 Stacy Lewis of America. And there is a gang of major winners,

all sitting at level par. 2 of the 5 amateurs remain to fight it out this

weekend. Dame Laura Davies is also with us

this weekend, 9 shots off the pace at the start of the day at 3 over

par. Some of the star names have fled the scene already. Major

winners, as you have heard, Catriona Matthew, Christie Kerr, and British

hopefuls Holly Clyburn and Stefanie Meadow. The 2004 champion of this

event, Karen Stupples, is hanging up her spikes. Karen is here to reflect

on that. I saw you yesterday on the 18th, you were a bit upset. You

might start me off again. CHUCKLES How do you reflect on events

yesterday and the way you went out? I look back... I got to the 10th

green, and it really got me thinking about this is the last 9 holes of

golf I was going to play. To be honest, I started thinking about

everything that has happened in my golfing career, all of the fantastic

memories, all of the fantastic people I have met. What a proud

moment. I was really proud to have done what I have Dunkin' doughnuts

many people along the way, that so many friends.

-- done what I have done, met so many people along the way. 10 years

ago we were watching you at Sunningdale. You cannot take that

away from you, you were a great winner, and you did it in style. You

started with an eagle, a perfect start. I knew I wanted to get off to

wait quick 1, but this, 2nd hole, par 5. This was your 2nd shot. I was

completely blind, I did not know where it was going. The cheers got

bigger and bigger. That is when you saw me gave it the jump, when I was

told it went in. Extraordinary, eagle, albatross, never been done

before, and you were a runaway winner by 5. I wonder how often

people remind you of the start of that round, and where they were when

they watched it. It is funny, I get it a lot. Particularly if somebody

has had an albatross, people say, the last 1 I saw was yours at the

2nd hole at Sunningdale. I hear it a lot. It is special at the time. I

did not realise it was happening. It was surreal. You are in the moment.

Looking back on it, I still pinch myself to make sure it was realised

that it happened, and of course it did because I have the trophy at

home. You are part of a select group of winners. Catriona Matthew joint

you later on. It is a select group. -- joined. Which is the proudest

instant moment in your career? It was this, winning the British Open

is huge. In front of my home crowd, and my family, there is no better

achievement. Any emotions that were involved... Because I had a 5 shot

lead going up to the 18th. To be able to enjoy the walk, look at

everybody cheering, it was so, so special. I honestly didn't think it

was something I would ever do. It is something I dream doll. It is the 1

event I watched as a child growing up. -- dream and old. It was the

only 1 I watched on television. -- dream dreamt of. That is when it hit

home. I thought I could really win this, I could really do it. But then

I got nervous. It didn't show. And all of a sudden you have a new

career, broadcasting opens up for you in the US, which is fantastic.

You are going to walk the walk and talk the talk. And I am going to

make you do that. I am ready. You have played this competitively twice

before. How much bigger is the competition compared with all of

those years ago? It is a hard course. The rough is brutal. It was

up to your waist almost. It is brutal. Once you get into it,

finding the ball is 1 issue, then moving it back out into play, you

have the rough to content with, then you have bunkers which also

strategically placed, and fairways running out quickly. You can run

into those bunkers fast. You have to be strategic with the tee shots.

Even if you hit a 4 iron, all you rescue it from the tee, you can

still be fearful of it catching too much, catching the wrong downslope

and running into the bunkers. That is tough. -- or you rescue. You

don't want to end up in it. You figure you can make par from around

the green. It is out of a lot of players comfort zones. The longer

players particularly. They are used to going in with 8 irons. Here, you

are going in with 5 irons, you're standing there, knowing it is going

to go 220 yards, it is a difficult thing to get your head around. It is

a tough course. Even though the conditions have been easy, imagine

if it had been windy, it would have been carnage. The last few years at

this event it has been windy. Martin has really got control of this. Tell

us more about her, she is 31, from California, 125 in the world

rankings, but what would you say are the hallmarks of her game? She is

known for driving. She is the straightest player on the course. I

think that is what is standing her in good stead. She is used to having

the longer shot into the green, so that is something she is comfortable

with. She's not comfortable with being in the lead of a major

championship. She's never been in this position. She's won 3 times on

the tour. She said in her press conference yesterday that she was

going to try and draw from those experiences. She said a win is a

win. I am going to potentially disagree with that, because this is

a major, and she does not know she has what it takes to win. She will

be hoping she does. Somehow, if she can draw on those experiences to

find that in a strength, just to believe she can do it, she might

have a chance. 3 back, the likes of Beatriz Recari of Spain, she had a

break-out year last year, and this 67 from her in which she got birdies

for the last 3, which was at the time the best performance by anybody

in this championship. She is very small, quite the communities player,

but she seems to have a really big game. -- diminutive player. She has

not got she had in previous years. I don't what we can attribute that to.

She has a new coach, perhaps that has given her confidence. She does

not hit it particularly far, so it is playing into her ballpark of

running the ball onto the Greens, it probably helps her to know she does

not have to hit such long shots into the greens. She likes to draw the

ball, which is an advantage around this golf course. It seems to me

that a lot of the drives seem to be crucial draw is, so it is setting up

for her. -- draws. She really seems to be warming up, she has had top 5

result in the last two events coming in from Arkansas. She is already a

major winner. To some extent she's been overshadowed by the likes of

Inbee Park, but she is very driven. She is gone and she is loving it.

She goes under the radar because there are no fireworks, she goes

about her business in a quiet, pleasant manner. She gets

overlooked, but she is a US Open champion. And to win those you have

to be pretty good. She is there, ready to pounce, and her game is in

good order. There really is no weakness to her game. That is not

Sarah, she had a great score coming home yesterday, nearly got an eagle

on the 18th. -- Gwladys Nocera. It was a great round from her. A money

winner on the European tour 2008, she won 5 times. She went to the US,

tried her luck on the tour over there, but it didn't work, and she

hasn't really made the breakthrough. But she's come back, how much is

that benefited her game? She obviously feels comfortable in

Europe. Unless you go to and American university, it is quite an

adjustment. You are in an environment where you don't have

many friends about you, you are on your own, it is a dog eat dog world,

you either get on with it and do it, or you hanker for the comforts of

home. I think that is where she falls in, she likes the home life,

she likes being over here in Europe, it's comfortable to her. I imagine

being on the Solheim cup team is very good for her. I have no doubt

she wants to be on it again. There is a lot of the chasing pack, we can

talk about a lot of them, Stacy Lewis, a great challenge. But Inbee

Park, there was so much about her last year, and it is the 26th

birthday today. Just a youngster. -- her 26th birthday. She had the

ranking, her home pressure had to be immense for her to continue to be

the world number 1. When Stacy Lewis crept up on her, the pressure must

have been building. Once she lost it, once she got rid of the number 1

world ranking and the target on her back was gone, she was able to come

back. She was on fire. She has a new putter, she feels it is the key to

her game. She thinks this will drive her forward. Obviously it is paying

off. She is in contention here. She'd been there before, major

champion, I would not be surprised to see her play well at all. We know

what she is capable of, certainly. 1 woman has shown the way this

morning, 18 -year-old Charley Hull has showed our sport is capable out

on the golf course. Albeit she started with back-to-back bogeys,

she went on a complete charge, picking up shots at the 3rd, 4th,

6th, 7th, and 12, then 3 in a row from the 14th. That 1 was in the

15th. The hot streak continued with her putter at the next 1, the 16th,

which took her to 6 under par. She would give 1 back again at the 17th

with a 3 putt, but she is at the back of the 18th green here,

remember, par 5, and she gave a chance to herself or another 1. She

would take it. -- for another 1. Charley Hull, who started 11 shots

off the lead, now within just 5 of the leaders. When she came off

around 40 minutes ago, this is the woman who leads the way on the

European tour standings, the leading lady, and I caught up with her

afterwards. What a round, 9 birdies, 3 bogeys, and a round of 66. What

did you find today? I started with 2 bogeys. I parted quite well. I hit

it quite close, as well. -- putted. I was working with rhythm. I got

onto the green earlier this morning, working on that, so I was quite

happy. After two bogeys to start with, I still thought if I got

through the 1st two I'm quite happy, because it is only 3 over par. Quite

good, but especially with my 18th yesterday, I was glad to hit the

fairway today. You had your travels at the start and finish of the last

couple of rounds, once you get those two sorted you would be a force to

reckon with. -- troubles. Yes, even when I got my 1st bogey I never

thought I was out of the championship. It is still great to

be in there. If somebody picks up tomorrow, just keep steady. I

actually find these golf courses little bit easier with the wind

because you can ride it, but there is not much wind out there at all

today. I found it easy. You have 1 that your 1st event, in March in

Morocco, I just wonder what confident it has given you. How does

it change you when you approach these big events? I feel I belong on

the tour now. There was all of that talk about me finishing 2nd, being

in the Solheim cup. I wanted to get a victory under my belt. Then it

gave me confidence going into the next major. I finished 7th. Then

going into the final round, I battled, but I let it slip. I got a

lot of confidence from that. I've had some good finishes so far this

year. It is all a bit of a learning experience for me. I will go out

there tomorrow and hopefully do the same. It must be good to show people

hear what you can do. Definitely, especially after yesterday's round,

somebody said this golf course was too hard, but it isn't today. Well

played, thank you berry much. How special a round is that? -- very

much. It has got back into contention, and that is what you

have to do. If you are scraping, you have to come out all guns blazing on

the Saturday because you have nothing to lose. Charley Hull has

nothing to lose. She wants to compete and content, and to do that

she had the number on the board. She is content in her abilities. Quite

rightly too, she is very good. She really took on the golf course

today. She certainly did. The scoring is very good so far. Let me

show you what has been going on. Inbee Park, we mentioned her

earlier, a winner of 3 majors, this is with her 4th birdie of the day, 4

under par for the day, 4 under par for the championship, and into a

tighter the lead. Martin has dropped two in the 1st opening holes. -- and

in a tie for the lead. They really are moving out there, in very, very

special conditions. Once again, the gentlest of breezes early on,

perhaps the most benign conditions so far. It is warm, humid, and

slightly overcast. And this is the situation, 3 tied at the top. Martin

has had a very nervy start. Julieta Granada just 1 behind her. Now it is

time to get onto the links at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Good afternoon.

COMMENTATOR: The play today is reflection be good. I don't know why

that is, I think the wind has gone down, the flags are in more generous

conditions. The players know a bit more about the course. Good morning.

Ryu Here, left-hand side of the fairway. 154 to the pin. It will

probably come out soft. The trouble will be getting it back to the pin.

Steady. It should come back... It might come back... No, it has

changed its mind. Lots of birdies, Eagles, all sorts of good stuff

going on this morning. Which is nice to see after the trials and

tribulations of the 1st two days. Final group, and following them is

Ken Brown. It has been a very slow opening couple of holes. Martin, the

overnight leader, she has taken relief from the sprinkler head.

Going with the putter. Martin is not the longest hitter in the world. You

would think this would suit her, but she is pretty dammed accurate, she

gets a low running flight of the -- off the tee. You said she got relief

from the sprinkler head. Yes, there is 1 just close to the green. You

can get relief, and it allowed her to putt it. Well, there you are, she

is struggling. A matter of regrouping, attacking, defending,

not throwing away shots. Up to 5. Good balance. That is a great shot.

Ranked 21st in the world. Plays all of her golf on the Japanese and

Korean tours. She has won 3 times already in Japan this year. Quite an

inviting little birdie chance. The little bit uphill from the right.

The Greens running at a mighty fast pace for a links course. They

probably knew there wasn't going to be much breeze. Very quick. Just

wide. She is a nice looking player, nice, firms swing. Good movement

through the ball. Yes, she has had a bit of injury, so gone off the pitch

this season. But she has been very sound. She has a good looking

action. Inbee Park For par. That is so

unlike her. APPLAUSE Very uncharacteristic.

Taking long time over these shots. They are almost trying too hard. I

know the feeling, I do it myself at times.

Tricky little shot for Ryu. Downhill all the way to the whole. She is

chipping it. -- hole. I would putt it. I guess she has nerves of

steel. A bit wayward, I must say. Coming off the shoulders, not the

easiest of shots. It has left a nasty 1 for par after a nice 2nd

shot. And now, she played it pretty safe

with the 2nd shot, she wasn't having any of this imposition. And her

reward is a very, very straight uphill putt. This is definitely

possible. Good line. Spectacular looking hole, this,

downhill, the green surrounded by bunkers. The green tends to tip the

ball the way of the pin. APPLAUSE

Another sweet shops. Very nicely struck. -- sweet shot. Some hawthorn

bushes behind this. But just over there is the nicest little

clubhouse. A chocolate box white building, quite lovely. There it is,

tucked away in the corner. They are a dying breed in many places, but I

am delighted that some clubs keep them. The best clubhouse in the

country. Mo Martin. Just working it slightly from left

to right. APPLAUSE And it is a good 1. Jess, a good

result, Ken. -- yes. Up on the 5th, tricky right-to-left

slider for Ryu. Very well done indeed. It was a good up and down

from the back slope. This player won the 2011 US Open before she was a

member of the LPGA. At the 18th. This is for birdie for Alex. Another

American player. Now on 68. Good score. APPLAUSE

That is the 6th at this hole. Charley Hull, 66, leading the way

for today's scoring. And trying to finish off and 5. That looked very

tiny. Gee-whiz. That can only be lack of concentration to miss a putt

that short. -- Ahn trying. I don't really believe there was an obstacle

in her way. Up to 6. This is a big par 5, dogleg left-to-right,

elevated green. We have seen two Eagles here today, always a chance

for another 1. Very flat looking green, but they

are all slightly undulating. Quite large. Nice stroke, just stays on

the left. Nice birdie, and time to welcome Tom Abbott, welcome, Tom.

Thank you, Peter. She has been patting very well all week, but not

able to get the pace on that 1. -- putting. Two drop shots. Level par,

1 under, only 3 behind. The player who broke through and 1 for the 1st

time on the LPGA tour at the end of last year. She was a 16 -year-old on

the ladies tour in the past. This is a part. She had a bit of a tangle

with the bunkers. -- par. Granada's mother, as usual, on the bag. She

always carries the big staff bag, Maureen. She is not a very big

lady! Extraordinary. She must be very fit indeed. That is a

disappointment for Granada. Down the slope. It took her a long time to

pick the line. As Peter was saying, they are very tricky greens. Very

hard to read. That is better. It is a dropped shot, however. Sixes are

always ugly. They are not what a professional golfer wants to be

marking down on the card. Beatriz Recari... A little nervy,

these two? I think so. They were trying to be precise with everything

early on. Those opening two holes have been brutal all week. These are

two players who have not played very well this season and now they are on

a huge stage. That is tricky when you have not had the confidence of

playing on this stage before. She read screens magnificently and

rolls the ball so well. -- greens. Mo Martin is an interesting player.

She lost her greatest men to, her grandfather, earlier this year. --

mentor. We will come back to that as we look at Amelia Lewis. She made an

eagle at six after birdieing five. Open the day with a couple of

dropped shots. She is going along nicely. -- she opened the day. She

is from Jacksonville, Florida. Mo Martin last greatest mentor, her

grandfather, earlier this year. He was 101 years old and was still

coming to the golf course with her when he was 100 years old. She has

relied on him so much. She was so close to him. That is a great old

story. He really inspired her. He would have loved to have been around

to see her here today. 230 yards to the pin here. Hopefully she will be

able to chase it up here. It is heading straight for the bunker.

That will leave her quite a lengthy bunker shot. Never the easiest.

Both of these players gave it a healthy back up here. -- healthy

whack. She may have to chase this in.

If you flying bugs, Mark? I think so, yes. -- there are a few flying

bugs? It is better to stop and start again than be unhappy over the ball.

A good connection. As she posted a fraction? What a great shot. Carried

that along way. A couple of bunkers on the right. She cleared those with

ease. Park for a birdie on the ninth. A very strong front nine from

the world number three. Moving day today and a number of players making

a move through the field. Charley Hull got 66 area today. She made a

two on every one of the par threes. -- earlier today.

A little fairway wood. That should be all right.

Just look at the flight of this and watch how it scurries up the

fairway. It is still visible. Seventh hole, Amy Yang. That will be

a par. She will remain at one under. A long hitter of the golf ball, Amy

Yang. Could be very dangerous over the rest of today and tomorrow.

Somewhat of an underachiever. Wonderful golf swing but maybe has

not put the results together that we would have expected. Still amazing

that she is as young as she is. She started playing when she was 16. A

long bunker shot. The key to these shots is clubhead speed. She

generates a fair amount of speed. But he has to get over a pretty

steep lip. That was not a bad effort at all.

She can have a little bit of a run at the birdie chance.

I thought that was in. So did she. Originally from Paraguay. Now lives

in Orlando in Florida. Many of the players do. Another one of those

players who burst onto the scene as a teenager. Her only win came early

in her career. It was a big one, a first prize cheque. I seem to

remember the million dollars were stacked up in cases on the first

tee. An eagle chance on the sixth. Yes,

glorious second finding the putting surface. Is there much in this one,

Mark? It is uphill a little. She does have the most beautiful rhythm

to her stroke, this girl. It seemed to wander off on her a little bit

from left to right. That is a glorious shot. That will

settle any nerves. 15 feet. Not much on this. Straight

uphill. That feels a bit like a shot

dropped. A lot of players making birdie at the sixth. A few eagles as

well. A fairly decent life for Beatriz Recari. Going with a nine

iron. Good shot. A shiny amateur career, she has had. She has backed

that up with three wins so far in the LPGA.

This is one of those putts that looks awkward. So Yeon Ryu has a

1-shot lead. A very consistent performer. She finished 10th in

Canada. Fifth at the US open. She followed that with another fifth

placed finish a couple of weeks ago. She is a really good form and she is

showing it here. Mo Martin not off to a good start. She had a three

shot lead coming into today. Back to the final peering of Beatriz

Recari and Mo Martin. -- pairing. We have seen the greens dry out during

the week. 11 and 14 tried a bit quicker. Looking more shiny and

burnished as the week has gone by. Is there much in this one, Ken? It

is a little of the hill. It turns a little bit to her right. She is

getting a bit of help from the Cadee. -- from the Cadee.

Struggling to get herself settle. -- settled. Again she is not known as

the quickest player on tour. She is taking her time. As somebody once

said to me, the slowest thing since soil erosion! That is the last three

pots she has stroke that have been absolutely dead on line but just

short. -- putt. Our championship leader. Great part

three this. -- par. The players flying the ball a row of bunkers

they cannot see from the tee. It is so difficult to get the ball to hold

on the screen. That pitching right beside the flag. The green is

pitched away from the tee. Effectively they are landing on a

downslope. She has got an eight iron. That

maybe half a club too big for her. She may have too feathery little one

in there and give it plenty of height. That one has done OK. An

anxious wait until it dropped. That is a very good result.

Mo Martin for a birdie at the fifth. Well done. The first birdie of the

day gets back to one quarter of the round. Tied for the lead.

Birdie putt Ferranti Park -- for Inbee Park. Using a new putter this

week. The putter she used last year in winning her three majors, she had

to change because she wore out the insert. She did not do that on the

course. It must have been her practice. She had so few ports last

year. -- cuts. This hole has given away plenty of

birdies this week. A very fast running fairway. Mo Martin does get

this amazing flight. The boulders and carry very far but it runs. --

the ball does not carry very far. Would you say her golf is suited to

links play? It does. She is pretty Fat of the tee. -- fast. Mo Martin

struggled to establish itself on the LPGA. She did win three tournaments

on the futures tour. She is making steady progress. But with a low ball

flight it is difficult to play well in America. 270 yards to reach the

far bunker on the left. Quite a testing drive.

The joint leader, second at the par three. She will have that to remain

at two under for the day, five under for the championship. She has got a

lot of logos on that shirt. She has got logos on logos! Very well

supported, the championship this year, Maureen. People are enjoying

the weather, enjoying the golf. Great crowds. Staying on late in the

past couple of evenings as well. They know their golf around this

neck of the woods and they really appreciate golf. After that

beautiful tee shot, this six footer for birdie. The wind has picked up a

little bit and it is to her left. It did not looked -- she did not look

too convincing over the ball. Disappointing that she did not take

advantage of that beautiful tee shot. She remains in a tie for

fourth macro. -- fourth. Four the store company on that number. --

others. 17 years of age from New Zealand. A

youngster with a huge amount of potential. She has played so well in

the early stages of her professional career. A little tester. Oh, two

pacey. It has got to be right in the centre of the whole. -- hole. I have

to say, the players nowadays our very good at looking on concerned

when they make mistakes like that. I used to be fuming. Maybe that is

where I went wrong! Amy Yang for a bogey at the eighth. Just the one

shot dropped for Amy Yang. It was her third bogey of the day. The

players have struggled on the opening couple of holes. A number of

players playing well on the front nine. The wind is just freshening a

little bit. Quite a day for Charley Hull earlier, wasn't it? Yes, it was

great stuff. She has the firepower. Neither of these to players have got

the beef in their shots. I talked to Charley Hull afterwards and she said

she would rather play tree-lined golf, that she struggles with links

golf. Another one racing out, this time for Granada. The greens

just... Charley Hull likes to visualise the shots. Bunkers on the

left. Bunkers up the right. Just playing for position. Downwind. That

is absolutely perfect. She has taken the shortest route.

228 to the pin. The flag is on 23. You like this play, Ken? I do. She

is right on the limit. Drifting right. The first bounce in the rough

slowed it down a fraction. She should be above ground. Not leaking

into the right-hand bunker. She seems to be settling down. To VA. --

to the eighth. That was a very fortunate break. She

could have been in also to have trouble. It may have been

non-playable, you never know. Well played by Laura Cremer. She has been

We go back to that final pairing. Beatrice record laying up. --

Beatrice record. This is where the championship is won or lost for the

top players in the world. Yes, this is very much Beatrice Reka's game.

When she guessed -- gets a wedge in her hand, she is normally dynamite.

She has not played so well this year with a mixture of injuries, which

forced her to the better swing, wish you now want to.

An extra hop that she could have done without.

Park with her second. I was out on the practice ground this morning

watching a lot of the players warming up. Inbee Park had an

inflatable teddy bear that she held between her elbows as she hid her

pitched shot. Yes, she is endorsing the product. I was talking about it

yesterday with her. The eighth fairway. 144 yards to the front. 172

the pain. -- pin. I think she has got a six iron.

Another good strike. The camera angle belying just how much uphill

that is. A beautiful shot. Mo Martin with her third at the sixth.

She is ten yards nearer. Hitting a long club. These two a really good

strikers. Very impressed so far. -- are really good strikers. Nice time

to welcome by the Peter Aliss. Thank you, Tom. It is exciting. We are

worried about a little rain that make come in later in the day. Here

is Lewis looking very colourful. A birdie attempt at the 12th. She's

two under. Drifted right. The greens every slate. Even the shortest of

putts, you have to be aware that such strength, direction. -- of its

strength. You do not just go and whack them in.

I was talking to Inbee Park yesterday and she felt she had done

enough. She felt level par was a good position to be in. She said she

would attack today and try to win this championship. She has put

together a good day so far. Mo Martin to go six under par. She

it is really a not overpowering the course, or

down into a little valley. Is about an hour and a half and they are just

tapping in on the sixth. It is not exactly Speedy Gonzales.

It is going to be a par at the eighth. As Maureen mentioned, she

won the US women's open in 2011. It was a weak blighted by the weather.

actually going to work out quite well. Granada. Looks good if it

runs. It just ran out of speed. Annoying, very annoying. APPLAUSE

6-over par, made the cut, only 70 runners. I thought the field would

be considerably more than that, the scoring was so close. But was

yesterday afternoon, at the back of the field. -- that was.

It is picture perfect here at Royal Birkdale Golf Club. Mo Martin, from

California, she has found out where the widest part of the fairway word.

That would be the best approaches into the greens. They spent a lot of

time casing the joint, pardon the expression. She does not hit

particularly long, so capitalising on her accuracy. That has been a

game plan all week, which is worked out well for them. Dropped some

shots at the 1st and 2nd. Still with a 1-shot advantage. This is the 1st

time, of course, she has ever led a Major championship in her career.

She has a pack of former winners hot on her heels. Suzann Pettersen is

very much in the hunt in that group of four at 2-under par. Charley Hull

has shown the way today, wonderful round of 66 for the 18 -year-old

from Kettering. There was a run of 3 birdies for her, and she really has

shown us a glimpse of what she is capable of. As we look further down,

our overnight leader, Uehara, and she followed it up well into the 70s

the next day. She had terrible trouble is after. Effectively sunk

without trace. That is what Royal Birkdale Golf Club can do to you if

you get it wrong. The fairway is very narrow. -- the fairways very

narrow. With these conditions the greens are really drying out

quickly. Getting very quick. Beatriz Recari, just over the back of the

green. Is that a bad place to miss it? She might be all right. You

really don't see it with these cameras, but there is enough room to

let it run up to the hole. But you have to play it at the right place,

you have to get it moving gently. Lofted it in the air, moving quite

nicely, and she has got an excellent result there. Excellent shot. So

easy to leave at 5 feet away, and miss it. She dropped a shot on the

short par 3. You can get very cross when that happens. Suzann Pettersen,

trying to save par at the 13th. 1st shot gone today. She has made a good

move. Started the day at 1-over. 7 shots behind. Now, she drops back.

APPLAUSE 1-under the championship, and she is

four back. Had some injury problems early in the year, some issues with

her back. She was laid out the 3 weeks with severe back problems.

Thankfully, she has come through those. Inbee Park at the 12th.

Rattled in off the left-hand bank. And that isn't too shabby. She is at

it again. That will bring a smile to your chops excavation -- to your

chops! That was very good. Just this 1st 5 feet or so uphill. Going into

the valley. It is easy to get a good lie on the pace. Not bad. In Charley

Hull's round, she had four 2 is -- twos. Doesn't happen very often. It

doesn't, I only remember it happening 1 other time. APPLAUSE

APPLAUSE Plays on the LPGA Tour, and the

ladies European Tour. She is playing her trade all around the world. 118

to the pin for Ryu. Big shot. Aggressive play. Should give her a

birdie chance, it looks good. Stop, though, it has just got the extra

spin, skipped over the back, and stopped halfway down the hill. But,

very hard hole when there is any wind about. A lot of rough on the

right-hand side. You can see the elevated green. When the wind is up

it sweeps across the 4. Always very pleased to get off here with a four.

-- it sweeps across the hole. To the 18th. The very precocious

talent from New Zealand, Ko. Again, a number of parts just short, it is

a problem. -- putts. 69, good score. APPLAUSE

Paula Creamer, she will tap this 1 in. Very elegant lady. 71. APPLAUSE

. 1 of the Tees near to the beach. You

can smell it in the air. 3 down the right, 1 on the left. You have 2

keep it close to the left if you want to get a decent tee shot. --

you have to. She reminds me of the sweeps of Harry Weicker. He used to

get a couple of cracking ones. He used to run through in conditions

like this. She tends to get this sort of flight. She does get a low 1

on occasion, which is very effective and links golf. Just failed to

control that 1 out of the semi- rough. Just went on a date. But this

putt is not overly taxing. -- just went on a bit. Looks good. APPLAUSE

He loves his golf, but he likes playing the other game with that

funny shaped ball. You all know who he is, Sir Clive Woodward. A good

player, I believe. Should be 9. APPLAUSE

I remember, he did some work with Melissa Reid. Did he? Working on

preparation, and I think mental approach to the game. He is a great

motivator, Clive. Yang. 3rd shot, and not a bad 1. Who said

not bad? Darned good. APPLAUSE 25 the 4 birdie. Touch left to

right. But a definite opportunity here, she has come close in the last

few greens. You cannot get much closer without

going in. A couple of short putts missed, and no luck on the long

ones. She is hanging on. APPLAUSE -- 25 feet birdie.

A quick reminder of the significant moments that have seen the lead in

the championship chop and change in the last few moments. Mo Martin, 2nd

to the 5th, setting up the birdie chance to go 5-under par. The world

ranked 125th in the world, best in a Major, just 1 top 30, and that was

earlier this year. An unexpected name at the top. Ryu, going for her

5th win since becoming a professional in 2001. She dropped on

the next 1 to go to 4-under par. Inbee Park this is the 12, birdie,

deadly with the putter. She dropped off the pace a little bit earlier

this year and the putter, but she is back and how. She won 6 events last

year. 3 of the Majors, and the 1st Korean to win the LPGA Tour Player

of the Year award. Some very, very good company for Mo Martin at the

top. She is holding her own so far at the women's British Open.

A little problem here. A little bit of an upslope. Nice lie. Plenty on

this green to run the ball on. Got to be a bit of a rocket launcher. 1

of the hybrid clubs. Bunkers left and right. This is an occasion where

you don't want to hit it too far. If you can swing smoothly and get the

ball shooting low, it will run. More of a chance of chasing it than

lofting it all the way. Spot on, she also has to go a little bit down the

shaft. She does not want the club tangled up. It is easy to take it

left. I think if she can get less loft on it she would take it, but

she has just got to take it out of here. It is bound to go a little bit

higher than she would like. She has got a chance. She certainly got it

away. It flew up. Not a real chaser, but it looks a beauty. And it is.

That is a great strike. Good balance. Do not go too far. No, it

is all right. Excellent. Norway's Suzann Pettersen. 2nd at

the 14th. And with the putter from off the green. Looks like a good

decision. APPLAUSE Almost going in. It is a golf which

is pretty alien to players from the US. They quickly get used to it. Mo

Martin putting from about 30 yards off the 18th green early in the

week. Inbee Park at the 13th. Slowly back, and smack it. That will be

good if it comes a little bit more, a little bit more. Excellent shot. I

say. 50,000 miles of beach and you come to the golf course to

sunbathe. I suppose that is the new trend. Perfect tee shot. 7-iron. The

flag. You have to use the contours to bring the ball into the flag. --

166 to the flag. Very pedestrian. Very kind. She is the walking

official with this final pairing. CHUCKLES

I bet he jumps into a puddle with a pair of new shoes and, as well --

new shoes on, as well. This is for birdie. 17th hole. Well done. Bit of

a struggle. She still gave it a good old hit. Amelia Lewis at the 12th.

This is for birdie. APPLAUSE I have seen quite a few defensive

putts. Very many, nearly everyone has been short. I can understand

that when the greens are travelling at this speed. Just an extra 3 feet

of speed on these putts. No more than that. Otherwise we would see a

lot more go in. Birdie and an eagle. That brighten things up after

dropping two strokes on the 1st two holes. -- brightened. A bit of

trouble here. Trying to scramble. That was a 4th shot. Under the

weather little bit today, Jessica. And a little bit under the weather

and this hole. There have been some problems with those grass banks.

From the US, the daughter of Peter Gordon, a tennis great. Couple of

wins on the LPGA Tour. She won Australia couple of years ago, she

won the season-opening event in the Bahamas, which is a lovely place to

kick things off. -- Peter Korda. I wonder if her father tried to

encourage her to play tennis, or even discouraged her. I'm sure she

has had a lovely life travelling with him. Ahn has a 7-iron. Uphill,

into about 7 or 8 yards of breeze. It has got to be a mighty hit with a

7-iron. Just on the very edge. Almost level

with the flag. Uphill all the way from Martin. Runaway. APPLAUSE

Another 1 of those defensive putts. Well, she was a long way away, so

you can't say that. In fact, it was well judged. APPLAUSE

Back to leading by 1. 113 to the pin. Ryu hit it a long

way up here. I think she is not too sure what the wind is doing, not too

sure if she will get a flyer. I think she had a 9-iron.

Much easier looking shot, if you can see into the heart of the green. But

that was not a very good 1. Her caddy's name is Tom Watson. Tom

Watson? That is not a bad name. If the player, Tom Watson. Beatriz

Recari for a very long birdie putt. -- good player, Tom Watson. You

choose the wrong hole to do that and you end up with 1 of these coming

back. 13th hole, Inbee Park, a birdie to get to 5-under par. Inbee

Park, close to tying the lead. She does not show much emotion on the

golf course. But she has told me in the past that she gets nervous, gets

excited, she is feeling it, but she just does not show it. The work

ethic, I don't know if it is the same for the Asian women who play

golf, but I have read almost horrendous stories about the time

they spend chipping, and parting from an early age. -- putting. Is

that to your knowledge, as well? We have seen the American players

coming back into the frame. They were spurred on by the Solheim cup

performance, from the Europeans at the end of last year when they got

beaten for the 1st time on home soil. The Europeans came over and

beat them at Colorado golf club. I think for a long time players from

Europe and the US were bored of people saying, why are you not

beating the Asian players? And it's spurred them on. It became a talking

point. -- it spurred them on. Beatriz Recari for par. Well done.

APPLAUSE Suzann Pettersen at the 15th. Hard

hole. Took its toll yesterday. Waiting for 15 minutes on this hole.

There was talk of slow play. Could not do anything about it. It is 1 of

the wonders of the golfing world for me. Nothing will happen until the

players choose to speed it up. It does not matter how much fiddling

about happens. The players themselves have to have a meeting

and decided they are not happy about it. Happens in all sports, in

cricket, they bowl lots of overs, in tennis they play lots of six, it is

just becoming very tedious. The supporters pay a lot of money to

watch it. You are looking aghast. I am not, I agree and I hang on to

your every word. Tell that to Charlie! CHUCKLES

The Texas wedge again for Ryu. Always difficult to judge the pace

when you come across different lengths of grass. Could have done

with a touch more. She has suddenly been struggling. And our ago she was

going along quite joyously, then misjudgements around the green...

They have not put her out of it yet, but it has put her under unnecessary

strain, I feel. Just pulling up short. Cast-iron four.

No wonder they take all day to play. Not only be women. The men are

even worse. The cavalry is arriving. She has driven into a ditch. Or he

has. There is life everywhere. The great tapestry of life. You get out

and push it and I'll put my foot under it.

Beautifully done. The third time in four holes she has been over the

green but got away with it. Just one behind. She seems to have had a few

opportunities. She is cheery though. Come on, you can do it. Oh, she is

waiting for him. Not quite finished yet. Run out of gas, maybe. Those

Yes, but Peter, he probably put in the problem in the first place. I

don't know where they are going now. I wouldn't go in there. You might

Lewis. This 13th as moved itself into the number one position for a

whole is ranked in difficulty. This is like one of those Scottish

rallies. I don't know where I know she is going. Perhaps she is on

Safari. I wouldn't go in there if I were you. There are crocodiles in

another hundred yards. Where on earth is he going? I don't think he

has been on a golf course before. All you need now is to clip a couple

of old age pensioners and you have got the jackpot. Granada out on the

peaceful calm of the 12th tee. That one will skip off the back. It

is pretty much pin hi. -- hi. Suzann Pettersen at the 15th. You have got

to be careful here. You do not want to lay it far. This looks as if she

is going to I could only about 80 or 90 yards. -- going to whack it.

173. Perfect. Two loops of nine here at Royal Birkdale. The first and

ninth near the clubhouse. She has taken an eternity to decide what to

do here. I have a feeling, going on the form of the last couple of

holes, she is going to be aggressive. She will probably be

trying to smack it over the bunker. She is leaning like she has hit it

right. Way up there. Absolute beauty.

Mo Martin finding the heart of yet another green. After a slightly

nervy bogey, bogey start, she has done well. Not really accustomed to

this rarefied atmosphere of being in the lead at a championship. So far

she is holding her own very well indeed. Doesn't the course log

Bonnie? It is presented well. -- doesn't the course look Bonnie? The

18th, Damon Laura Davies. -- Damon Laura Davies.

A little bit of good fortune. Caught the angle.

Crisply struck by Suzann Pettersen. Slightly wayward. Nice reception

there for this group coming onto the green. That kestrel is looking for

cannot see it! Well, we can see it. Good putt from Lewis. She plays both

tours. She is a travelling American. Back to the ninth green. The final

pair. They started at 12:35pm. They have been about two hours. In modern

parlance that is not too bad. But in days gone by it would be considered

rather slow. This is one of the more exposed

putting macro services. -- putting surfaces. It has only been cut once.

Sometimes the ball seems to hobble off the face and bobbles a little

bit. Another one short. That is where the old expression, never up,

never in comes from. Beatrice Reka Eisai 's she is

enjoying her golf again this year. -- Beatriz Recari. She has changed

coaches. She is enjoying herself on the golf course again and that

counts for a lot. The greens are drying out. There is

a little noise when it bounces -- when the ball bounces. A little bit

of a bite. Mo Martin for a birdie at the ninth. Time and time again we

have seen them online. Nine holes completed. After a shaky start, not

bad at all. She leads by one. Interesting. Mary Poppins. Laura

from the back of the 18th. Laura Davies in her 30th appearance

in the championship. Emma Talley, the reigning US amateur champion, is

three over today. Four over for the championship. Georgia Hall, six over

today. She is three shots behind Emma Talley of the United States.

That is in the race for the Smiths solver.

Oh, Suzanne. That was not very long at all. Perhaps that is why she has

only won two majors, Maureen. This fairy tales a left to right. The

wind is also going from left to right.

This is a diabolically fiendish pin position. Dreamt up by a

particularly troubled mind, I think. She has taken a minute and a half to

have a look at it. A little softer and that was good. But now she has

left herself a tweaker. Our little butterfly. This looks

about the same length as the one that Suzanne has just missed.

Straight back up the hill. Right-to-left. Array! That is more

like it. Just made it. It looks like anything that finish left of that

hole was seriously difficult? Absolutely right, Maureen. It was

not easy to tell from the fairway that it was white -- right in the

rich. -- reach. Not a very attacking putt from

Lewis. She opened with a couple of bogeys. Birdied five, got an eagle

at six. And she has had a string of Pars since. Very confident

performance from the American. Currently joint fourth place, three

behind the leader. Just pacey. Look where that has gone too. -- to. A

reasonable second and you have now got a hefty putt for a five. Mo

Martin going to find that her lead is going to extend. She is going to

drop at least one shot here. She is joint second with Inbee Park, two

behind Mo Martin. The wind is slightly freshening. It

is getting a little cooler. Darkening clouds above us.

She is beautifully immersed in simply playing her own game. If you

have got your own game, and hers is very individual, you have got to do

that. Laura at the 18th. This is for a birdie. 72. It is in! Well done.

Two birdies in the last four holds for Laura Davies. -- the last four

halls. Delightful. Looks very sound indeed.

She is swinging well now. Stacy Lewis with her second shot

into 17. Birdied the last. Level par for the championship. That is going

to be gobbled up by the greedy bunker. That is her day 's work.

159 to this pin. She gives it a mighty clubber. It has just rolled

off the back left. Not too bad. If you were playing there, Mark,

what would you hit of this tee? I would hit probably an eight iron.

played with Christy O'Connor junior and he had a pretty impressive first

nine. -- in 1986, I played with. We have seen many lost opportunities so

far today. Well, it is very much a case of as

you were, with Mo Martin re-establishing her three shot lead.

from left to right. Well done. Looking at this 11th pin, it looks

as if it is leaning out of the green. It is a very fruity position.

I have never seen one leaning over on the putting surface.

25 feet uphill. A touch of fade on this. The course owes her. Just miss

read it. -- she did not read that properly.

This is an awkward one. It may not be too bad. She is very close to the

front. A little too sharp. If it was left of the pin it might have rolled

back to the hole. They should not be much in this one after that

beautiful tee shot. Absolutely correct. Basically straight uphill.

It was a marvellous tee shot. Second place on her own. The two behind

Martin. The Americans would call that a great ability to bounce back.

It is setting up nicely for tomorrow, Maureen. There will be a

good clutch of players within four shots, maybe five. Yes, the biggest

mover of the day, Charley Hull, has moved herself from five over to one

under. She is currently enjoying seven. Nine players under par as we

speak. There are the score is going through at the bottom. You can pick

out your favourite players. Our leader. Mo Martin 11th tee.

Little drainage ditches, dry ditches, left and right. I am sure

they have not filled them in over the years. Place-macro. -- Beatriz

She wants to erase the nasty memory of the six on the last. She started

the ball to straight at that pace. She remains at level par. We were

just watch this third shot from Park at the 17th. Slow pitch. Hope she

leader, Mo Martin. Proven winners, proven major winners, and

experienced a discount when you get down to the Sunday in a major. Here

is one of those major winners. Just tiptoeing into the heavy stuff. A

little bit in the lap of the gods. Now she has got what looks like a

three wood. Bonkers on the right. If you go in there you are going

nowhere. -- bonkers. Difficult tee shot. Once you have done that, it is

a pretty long second shot as well. 430 yards, this whole. -- hole.

That should be pretty much perfect. Not the worst live. But the grass is

quite prettily, so could grab the club -- prickly. It is a demon, DOS

to -- not the worst lie. -- it is a

demon pin. Looked nasty, looks like it could be stuck in the long grass

up there. It was always a danger. We thought it might snag. Angela

Stanford. This is for birdie at 18. Lovely. Birdie at 17, as well, so a

great finish to her round. APPLAUSE Solid 70.

Back to the 11th. Mo Martin. Championship leader. Two shots

ahead. These two players will both have

their work cut out for them to make four. They have quite a job for them

selves making 5, in some ways. Quite surprised with what she was trying

to do there. Yes, she just did not seem to get it quite well. Whether

the club snag a little bit. Or maybe she was just a little bit

adventurous with it. We have seen Suzann Pettersen's pre- shot

routine. She rehearses the opposite. APPLAUSE

Then, hopefully on the swing, she gets the ideal in between. And

that's perfect. That was brave. Finishing on the left-hand side of

this the way, she has to come right over. You can see them standing on

the top. 1st player from mainland China to

qualify for the LPGA Tour. Then she went on to win a Major. A couple of

years ago, that was. This is Emma Talley, 1 of the two amateurs who

have made the cut. The other 1 being George Hall. These two in a tussle

for the prize for the best amateur. Steady, steady. 50 yards short and

left. If she goes there, she would have hit it into the rough. Maybe in

the hazard. Yes, there is a ditch behind those sponsors boards. She

has gone from 1 horrible lie to somewhere really thick and tangling.

Where the flag is cut a yard short, she could go down the face of it.

She is almost looking to get this 10 feet wide of the pin if she can. She

needs the help of Tom Watson to get this 1 out. You have to accelerate

the club through. Anything inside 12 feet is good. My word. Actually went

backwards. I knew it was going to be tricky. It was such a terrible,

terrible life. She did well not to double hit, because the ball came

right back towards the club. She had to withdraw very sharply. Just

having another look at it now. She takes a decent backswing. She does

her best to accelerate. The ball has actually come back. With a great

view here of the difficulty, she hasn't even tackled that part of the

equation yet. She is just coping with the lie at the moment. The

slope, really, is at a 45? angle. Even if this was a perfect life, it

would be difficult to control. -- 45 degrees angle. She has left herself

a slaughter of a putt. You would have thought it was almost

impossible to leave that 1 short on the high side of the flag. That is

four played. The putt will need a strong nerve.

2nd shot. That 1 is trundling up the nicely. How about this? -- up there.

A short birdie putt coming up. She's 21st in the world. Very good

player. She does not play many events in the US or Europe. Back to

17. Talley. Oh no. She goes to the University of Alabama. That is where

Stefanie Meadow was educated. Stephanie, from Northern Ireland,

just turned professional. She did not make the cut here. -- Stefanie

Meadow, from Northern Ireland. A quick look at that arrival. 3

behind Talley at this stage. An eagle could do her some great good.

And that is a beautiful putt. APPLAUSE

A very fine closing birdie. We just watch her tap in. Well done, well

to play for tomorrow. This would be an all-American two putt. Putting

right over the top. She has got the wrong side. Either side was going to

be tricky, but that leaves her with a very tricky 2nd putt. You hit it

into the ditch on the left, too aggressive for the lie. Last

difficult hole on the course. A couple of par-5 holes to go. She has

about 75 yards. There is a bunker right between her and the pin. I am

guessing the championship must have somebody painting faces for the

youngsters today. I think it is so expertly done, so I don't think that

could have been the parents doing that. With the greatest respect. It

looks beautiful. I could never have done that. Could be seeing some big

changes at the top of the leaderboard. So Yeon Ryu is

struggling. Mo Martin has a bit of work to do for her par. And Inbee

Park has not taken advantage of that. She is sneaking down the

leaderboard. Earlier this week Inbee Park said she really wanted to win

this title to complete her career grand slam. She might have a bit

more work to do. This is very tough. Uphill and downhill the other side.

It is so fast on the other side. It is either in or 3 feet by. APPLAUSE

After having all of those problems in the rough she scrambles a bogey.

But not too much reaction. Yes, she says. She is creeping inexorably

towards actually playing this shot. She could choose where to drop it

within two club lengths. Going over a cup of the advertising hoardings,

she cannot drop to the side of them. -- a couple of. She must not

compound the error is she has already made. She needs to get on

and make double-bogey. Sensible play wasn't having anything to do with

that bunker that was between her and the flag. Mo Martin, that is a

dropped shot. It all came from the approach. She left herself too much

work. Yes, and she still has a little bit of work to do there.

Superb tee shot from Suzann Pettersen. This is easily within

reach for her. Flag today fairly central.

feed into the middle. Fine shot. That is where we just saw Emma

Talley a few moments ago. Oh. Just a four putt. Ridiculous pin position.

Mo Martin with a double-bogey, and now she is tied for the lead with So

Yeon Ryu. But So Yeon Ryu is in some trouble. She has dropped a couple of

shots. Some big changes at the top of the leaderboard in the last few

minutes. So, this is going to be a tap in 5 4 Amelia Lewis. -- for

It is going to be a double for So Yeon Ryu. She falls back to 2-under

par. A group of players at 2-under par. After a rather weak approach,

this is for birdie. Beautiful roll up to there. Inbee Park is going to

remain at 3-under. She is in 2nd place on her own, 1 behind Mo

Martin. This is to get to 3-under par.

She is tied for 2nd, just 1 shot behind Mo Martin. APPLAUSE

Quietly going about her business. She seems pretty happy though,

doesn't she, Ahn. She plays on the Japanese ladies Tour. Suzann

Pettersen, this would be a significant move. Igor putt. Emma

Talley took 3 putts from this side of the hole just a moment ago. It is

running well. -- eagle putt. Two of the lead. After bogeys at 13 and 15

that is just the injection she needed. To the par-3/12 hole.

Beatriz Recari. Dash to the par-3, There is the current situation. Four

Major champion in the top 10 in the shape of Inbee Park, Suzann

Pettersen, So Yeon Ryu, and Shanshan Feng. And Charley Hull there. Had

her feet up in the clubhouse for most of the day, and here is

Shanshan Feng. So exciting, worthies last couple of

holes. -- were these. It is a good attempt to 17 by the Chinese player.

Just settle down. I think tomorrow, with the way the leaderboard is

looking, it is not over. It is a real chance to make up some ground

in the last few holes. 169. Ahn just put off by the crowd moving around

the corner. They were not making a lot of noise, but they just caught

her eye. She has stuck to her game plan beautifully today. She is a

really jolly personality. Smooth, beautiful swings, these two.

Different personalities and shapes. Seems to be the 20th 7-iron of the

day for her, and this is another terrific shot. The wind has just

turned a fraction. Have you been impressed by her? I must admit, I

have not really seen her play before, because she plays most of

her golf in Japan. Yes, very impressed by both of these girls. I

don't know how well I you are a -- Ayaka Uehara plays, but she has been

doing quite well here. Not a good tee shot for Mo Martin. Both Beatriz

Recari and Mo Martin missing the green at the par-3, 12th hole. So

Yeon Ryu, again, taking most of the time. She already had a minute when

they were lining up. She needs another minute to get settled. She

is also hitting a 7-iron. 169 is a long way, unless the wind is

helping, but I don't believe it is helping right now.

APPLAUSE Even when the players do hit it flat

out, it still looks very elegant. Everything is in balance. You can

get some typical lies in these particular bunkers. That was

exceptionally well done. You really have to get it out of there.

APPLAUSE Stacy Lewis. Rolling that 1 in on

the home green. APPLAUSE That is her days work, solid 70. --

day's work. On the same mark as Charley Hull. That could be a

possible pairing for tomorrow. Up to the 18th, Suzann Pettersen, coming

off the eagle on the 17th. Is it going to stay short of that bunker?

Just short of the rough. That is fine, that is absolutely fine from

Suzann Pettersen. May have another chance at an eagle. This is a real

roller-coaster switchback effort of a putt. Come on. Well, she never

gave it enough to really travel significantly over the 1st bump. It

has leapt to the right-hand side. Back to the 12th, Mo Martin has her

2nd. You can see the ball of Beatriz Recari on the green. APPLAUSE

Beatriz Recari will have a putt for a par. We saw her coming out of the

bunker. Mo Martin will also try and make her 3. Plenty of changes on

this leaderboard over the last 20 minutes also. Now we have Mo Martin

in front by 1. Inbee Park, 3-under the bidet, just 1 behind, Suzann

Pettersen. And she is in a good position on the 18th. -- Inbee Park,

3-under for the day. Great recovery by Shanshan Feng after a fairly

ropey 1st putt. She moves to 2-under par. On the same mark now is Suzann

Pettersen, Amelia Lewis, So Yeon Ryu, and Beatriz Recari. -- is --

as. Just a tiny sliver of left-to-right. Keep still. The boat

is rocking a little bit at the back, Ken. APPLAUSE

So Yeon Ryu for a birdie at 14. Trying to bounce back after that

double-bogey. APPLAUSE Should be a par for So Yeon Ryu.

Amelia Lewis at 16. Come on. Flag a long way back on 16. We have not

seen many players reach it. Important putt, this, for Mo Martin.

It does move to the right. You have to launch it. Oh dear, pushed it.

Just inside. And Mo Martin falls back to 3-under par. She is now in a

tiny for the lead. -- tie for the lead. This is for an outright lead

for Ahn. I am not sure she is aware of it. It has got a bit of pace on

it. At the 18th, this is Emma Talley for a birdie. Good roll on that 1,

but not able to get it to drop. APPLAUSE

Still, good performance from the amateur, who is just in her 2nd year

of university. Just finishing up her 2nd year of university. APPLAUSE

76 today, she will look for a nice finish tomorrow, trying to win the

amateur prize. Battling with Georgia Hall from England. Bit of

3-under par. Suzann Pettersen at the 18th. Par 5. Looking a little

concerned. But she shouldn't be. That is very good indeed. She has

put on the brakes. She is going to finish up exactly where Charley Hull

did. Suzann Pettersen looking to do the same. Spoke to her coach earlier

this week, and he was saying that Suzann Pettersen was getting into

some really good form. Playing 1 at the beginning of the year. She had

the injury problems, now back to some top form, and it is showing.

Bunkers down the right. A good time for me to welcome back Peter Alliss.

You are leaving us at a very crucial time of the afternoon. At this stage

you have to gather yourself together. Make some pars, get some

birdie opportunities. A par here. She has been very steady. The great

thing -- the main thing is not to drop any. Just 1 or 2 birdies and

you are right there. Looks like a cleaner, better hit to me.

You can see how they have shaped that the way for some definition. It

makes the golf course look a bit more pleasing to the high. Dash to

the high -- to the eye. So Yeon Ryu has the power to get it into macro.

Has she got the accuracy? -- to get it in two. She has stopped a few

times today. Either she has been put off by something, all she has had a

thought -- all she has -- or. Inbee Park. This is for the outright

Inbee Park, the queen of Serena and 3-time Major winner last season

moves to the head of proceedings for the 1st time. -- serene. 1 of the

few birdie putts today. She missed a few, but she is coming back. Suzann

Pettersen at the last. She is one of five major winners queueing up here

in the third round of this major championship. Frustration on the

back nine after two bogeys. An eagle on the 17th makes her feel much

better. Choosing the putter over one of her more lofted clubs. It is not

a bad effort. She does hit the ball quite beautifully, Maureen. I enjoy

watching her. Don't be greedy here. It needs to come out sideways. Don't

be greedy. Just find the fairway. Up to 18.

Good free swing of the putter. That is tracking beautifully. Very fine

closing birdie. That will be for 71. And a total of one under. Tied for

ninth at the moment. Now, is Beatriz Recari heeding

Ken's advice? Of it too safe with that one. -- she was a bit too safe

elevated Suzann Pettersen into joint second place. Inbee Park on the 18th

The sand. After a good tee shot on the 18th. That will be OK, will it?

Oh, it's just found the sand. Just toppled in. Sun-Ju Ahn trying to

fire it towards the TV tower. I think she likes it. Very good

hitting indeed. 499 yards, this hole. Just a wee draft.

Nice little kick off the corner of the bunker. That is three. Things

just unravelling a little bit for this last group. Mo Martin has gone

clubhouse and a real turnaround in this championship so far. Very much

in the thick of things? Yes, it is nice. I have been playing well for

three days. It is hard to get going. It is easy to make one sloppy

mistake and it takes you right back. I am really enjoying this course. It

is the first time I fill it with a good heart. I am just trying to

build the brand as I go. Who knows what the weather is going to do

tomorrow? From what I have seen it will be nice towards the afternoon.

We are gearing up for quite a day tomorrow. Three birdies going out.

Frustration with a couple of dropped shots. You got them both back on the

17th? There are some tough holes out there. Par is a great score. 13 is

one of them. Unfortunately I had three putts to bogey. I felt really

in good shape, hitting the ball great. Hopefully I can take all that

with me into tomorrow. It has been a difficult year for you. You have had

back problems. You missed the first major of the year and missed the cut

at the U.S. Open. Is there a determination to make up for lost

time? I am sure that is how you feel. It is dreadful when you don't

get to play golf and missed the big tournaments that you live and die

for. I have been really good now since. I am in good shape. This is

the major that you have fed least well in. I am sensing that you have

a major victories in America and France, almost the Phil Mickelson

thing, that he wants to become a complete golfer by winning on links.

Is there a bit like that -- a bit of that in new? There is a bit of

wanting to win all five majors until -- before my career is over. You

just have to adjust and play smart. Adjust accordingly. Yes, I am right

where I want to be for tomorrow. Who knows? I would give it my all

tomorrow. At the same time, play smart. We look forward to it. Thank

A big round for her today. This is for the outright lead for Sun-Ju

Ahn. A couple of absolutely fantastic shots. She got up this par

five in two into the wind. A beautiful role on that. It

deserved to drop. It is going to be a bogey at best, however.

Lewis with a long putt for an eagle. Two cracking shots at the back of

the green. That's six, seven footer for a birdie.

Beautiful stroke. That was firm. Very good indeed.

Mole Martin. -- Mo Martin. She is only one shot behind. Another one

short. Well, there have been at least four, five, six players who

will think tonight, I should have done this, I should have done that.

A number of them have missed a lot of opportunities. It would be a bit

of a cavalry charge tomorrow. -- it will be. And an exciting one. Let's

hope it is not spoiled by the weather. A tester for Sun-Ju Ahn to

join the lead. Inbee Park is on -4 at the moment. Well done. I thought

she had posted. Two Koreans topping the leaderboard at the moment.

been pretty much copybook will stop --. It looks as if she is enjoying

herself. No Franz or stresses apparent. -- no frowning.

inside the bunker. She is a danger, Maureen. There are a few of them. I

thought the ball was going to finish pin hi.

She missed a few chances earlier on. Julieta Granada on 16. I thought she

had got it. That was unlucky. That will drop her back to one under.

Write to the edge of the fairway. -- that was right to the edge of the

fairway. A pretty good array of bunkers on this whole. -- hole. Now

this group has lost a couple of holes. Six iron, 166.

The wind just slightly changing angle.

I say! I thought that was Sir Bruce Forsyth on the left for a minute.

Perhaps it is a relation. Lets worthy puce today, darling! -- let

us where the puce today! Five birdies means a lot of dropped

shots. Five birdies, six dropped shots.

Inbee Park does not often bring her caddie in to help line up the putts.

This is to give her the lead on her own in this championship. She

started the day at level par. Ideal conditions today. Rain was forecast.

Even a little bit of thunder sweeping in from Ireland. Where

else? It hasn't arrived, or El Cid has missed us. She has to be careful

with this. It is not outside the hole. She has to be firm.

That is a couple of those we have seen missed by her. That would keep

it tight at the top. It is so easily done.

It is still, thank goodness for her, a par. It is not a dropped shot. But

it is still going to be in her mind a dropped shot.

The same expression on her face. She will be thinking some thoughts. Up

to the 16th green. Sun-Ju Ahn. I think she has got a lot of make-up

on both sides of that sweater. She gets a fair bit of head movement.

That is very perceptive of you, Peter. I have been caught with

make-up on me! 50 years ago! She doesn't like it. And that is

why. That is worse than being in the bunker, possibly.

Mo Martin at the 14th. The ball rolled back of the green. She's

struggling. The is struggling, struggling, struggling. The club

selection was one short. She is in danger of dropping a shot here.

I've got a funny feeling the ball may have moved. I am not sure. She

repaired a pitch mark under her ball. I think it may just have

toppled... I always think things like that are very unfortunate.

She pitched it short and that could be awkward. She was hoping for a

round of applause which did not materialise. Still debating as to

whether it moved or not. She certainly thought it did. The

chances are it did. Has it moved about four feed? No, it has moved

about 2.5 millimetres. Was she addressing it or did it move of its

own volition? I am sorry, I wasn't paying attention. All, Ken! You will

never take over from Clouseau! Or perhaps you will take over from

Clouseau! Not the easiest of chips. I would

not fancy it. These girls have steely nerves. Not steely enough. It

was so much more difficult than if it had found the sand. Letting your

mind drift slightly to the fact that you could do that is almost enough

to make it happen. Precision strike needed and not forthcoming.

quite. He does not want to get involved in a legal argument. --

A couple of plays on four under. Inbee Park is completed her round.

If you have been with us for the last couple of hours, or indeed when

we started out, a number of players missed anything from two fought to

six foot putts earlier run. Come on, no. Not this one in. Bit tentative.

These greens are fast. They are not easy at all. And other dropped shot.

We have seen umpteen putts come macro short. -- come up short. They

look extremely fast. They are not easy to judge. They are pretty even.

This is a struggle, to get this one close. Yes, downhill, down

crosswind. It is not nice, this. Head probably spinning a bit from

that jet. -- chip. Steady on. I don't know what happened to the

second shot. The decision was the ball had moved

but she had not grounded her club. She moves on. Good putt. Well done.

Nice three. There is a sandy grave awaking that

one. -- awaiting. This would take into the lead should she managed to

hole it. It is a tricky one. Who said it was tricky? Who said it was

tricky? Straight as an arrow. Seat is just getting warmed up. Three

birdies in the last four holes. I like the look of that cartoon on her

shirt. I don't know what it does but it looks amusing. Hello, the cockers

are out. Serve borders, peddling, doing something odd. -- surfers.

This is her fourth shot. Left it in the bunker, we are told.

They are devilish bunkers, these links bunkers. They cut very steep.

If you get in the corner, no hope. A bunker for every occasion done this

hole. You need an accurate tee shot. That was a beauty.

A big pot -- putt for a So Yeon Ryu. That has just put a halt to any

momentum she was building. Two sixes on this back nine. Both of the par

Fords have really hurt. -- par four holes. It has been a day of great

change on the third day. Sun-Ju Ahn from Korea, plays on the regular

Japanese tour, or she has won three times this year, what an impact she

is making here. Run has put her at the top of the leaderboard ahead of

Inbee Park, the one we thought may just feature. Amelia Lewis. She has

missed five cuts in succession before coming to Britain. She tied

for sixth at the Buckinghamshire club last week. She clearly likes

the air in Great Britain. That would indeed have been a

fighting five. Dropped shots on her opening two holes. No dropped shots

since until the last. Sun-Ju Ahn at the 17th. Two fives coming up. The

wind had not totally helping but not too much of a hindrance.

So Yeon Ryu about to drive. 290 yards. Just in the semi wrath. It

looks OK from here. She is taking her time. They have almost caught up

with the group in front, which is something. You could actually say

they have paced themselves perfectly. She has stopped a few

times. Julieta Granada... I thought there

was a little bit of a back stop there. The ball did not have quite

enough energy to feed back down to the hole. Martin with her second

shot at the 15th. Still the way to go. What she would not give for a

good finish. -- is still a way. A lot of excitement has happened

over the last hour or so in the championship. If you players

sneaking up to the top. Beatriz Recari, bit of work still to do.

Lewis finishing. APPLAUSE A lot of them could have been a lot

better. Quite a few mistakes made earlier on. That has kept them

together, of course. It all sets up nicely for tomorrow. Come on,

Granada. Granada, I am falling under your spell. In you go. She struggled

for a number of seasons following her break-out year in 2006 when she

won the million dollar prize. Some good top 10 finishes so far this

year. She has hit it in the middle of the right-hand traps, your -- So

Yeon Ryu. Knock it out at about 90 yards, that will do. But there is

the danger of leaving it in there. 85 yards, pitched to the right of

the pin, short and left gives you the easiest putt. APPLAUSE

She seemed to dig it out. Looked pretty ominous when the divot flew

up. But something majestic. Plenty of deliberations with her caddy. I

am not too sure what the discussion is about. Just got to hit it out

with not much risk. Exactly like that. Still should be able to get

home reasonably from there, I should think, Mark. Good angle. 60 yards,

high floater, and not bad. Got it to stop pretty quickly. Yes, not that

bad, out of the rough, into the breeze. I think they have been asked

to get a riddle and, they are starting to move. -- riddle on. 204

yards to the front for Ahn. But it isn't sitting too well. She has got

to carry the bunker left up by the green, which is probably a 190 carry

out of this lie. This is going to have to be a pure strike. Sounded

good. By golly, it is... Oh, stay away, stay away... The bunkers

gather and the hole doesn't. Back to the final pairing on the

15th. Beatriz Recari will be the 1st 1 to play. This is a really

touchy-feely putt downhill. Left to right. Pretty quick. Maximum break.

It could go 3 or 4 feet by a few don't get it right around the break

-- if you don't get it right around the break. She has a unique way of

looking down the line when she is over the putt. She just seems to

move her head slightly. If she moved the ball and inch back she would be

in a better stance. She seems to do this, particularly on the long ones.

-- and inch -- 1 inch. You said it was a slippery 1, and it just slips

by. Suddenly, labs, there is a bit of cloud, and a bit of rain looking

like it is coming this way. -- lads. A bit of rain is forecast. I

was told that it isn't going to rain until players finished. We will see

if it is right. -- we will see if he is right. Very bold. APPLAUSE

3-over, level par for the championship. 17th. So Yeon Ryu's

3rd. It trundles up onto the green. I say, I say, I say! APPLAUSE

The golfing gods helping her out much like they did at the last hole.

Almost a joke. I played for that. I knew it would come in from the

right. Martin trying to stop the rot. This for birdie. Oh! Not high

enough. Well, it is going to be a par, which ends the run of bad holes

coming into this. We have seen so many putt -- putts like that. They

could be a few more players within 3 or 4 shots -- there could be. This

looks a horrid shot. After an incredible slice of luck for So Yeon

Ryu, it is Ahn's chance. It stopped on the edge of the green. It has

trickled into this bunker. She has got to stand outside it. This is

really difficult, often dangerous shot. She has got to bend her needs

an awful lot. And keep them bent. That is a lot better than it might

have been. She has got to stay there and keep her legs bent on this. Just

hands and arms. Not a long shot. Keep the swing back and through.

Don't stop on it. It will come out. APPLAUSE

Too well. Leading the way. A putt for birdie,

but it is going to be a difficult 1 on the 17th. At the 18th. Gladys

Macara -- Gladys and -- Gwladys Nocera. She is from

Switzerland. She lives near Lake Geneva. Not a bad spot. She has been

around for a few years. A good finish. Find the fairway. Four four

four finish. This has been the strongest wind we have had all day.

Straight into the players' face. -- players' faces.

Lightning fast birdie putt for Ahn. It is going to go to the left, then

it is going to move violently back to the right.

2nd down to the last hole. You have got to avoid the bunkers if you can.

And she has. What the result. APPLAUSE

-- what a result. What a result that is. She was quite fortunate of the

tee -- off. Granada Full. -- Granada. Oh, found the bunker.

Back to 17. So Yeon Ryu. This would be some birdie. She walks away with

a par. After coming out of a bunker. APPLAUSE

An eventful back 9 for So Yeon Ryu, may be room for 1 birdie left. Lives

in Irvine, California. She is from Korea, of course.

APPLAUSE Par for Ahn. They all look pretty

happy. Very nice day. It has been beautifully organised. Lots of

things for the spectators and youngsters to do. A lot of

youngsters out here. I am reminded of get into golf .com. Have a look,

all 1 word, there might be in offer you simply cannot resist. Or, go on

to the BBC website. Get inspired. We should all get inspired. I might be

a bit old, but I am always up for a good sit down. There is a lot of

thought going into this. It has nestled down a little bit. The wind

is blowing directly into the players' faces. 6-iron. A little

bluff at the front of the screen. If it comes short it will trickle down

to the bottom Augusta style. You can just see the parting -- putting

surfaces. Coming out of the rough it will probably release out.

It is not on the putting surface for Beatriz Recari, so a bit of work

left. Up to 18. Looks pretty happy, the leader. Yes,

look at that. The fairways drying out a little bit. They were softer

early in the week. They were, but it is still moving. Get a nice four to

finish, and a pleasant afternoon. -- So Yeon Ryu, should have been

about a 270 carry. A little bit less. It is heading towards the left

trap. It needs to stop. Lost sight of it. It is in the trap, I think.

Oh, it is indeed. And quite near the face. Long 3rd shot.

She has quite a dilemma when it comes to her turn. Where to play the

next 1? Granada Plays her 3rd. Aggressive play, and almost in.

APPLAUSE We have seen a few of the short

players doing well, putting the way around here. Granada's 1 of those

players. 27 years of age, been out on the Tour for 9 years.

Yang finishing off. Eagle 3? No. She will tap that in to go to 1-under

par. A round of 72, which is level par. APPLAUSE

Looks as if it is clouding up a little bit out there, Tom, from the

north and from the sea towards Northern Ireland. That's an

interesting shot, look at that, the old clubhouse reflected in

somebody's glasses. Granada, Sandy birdie. 2-under par. APPLAUSE

72 today, two birdies on the last four. I would not like to pick a

winner at the moment. Absolutely right, because it has been toing and

froing all day. All big names out there. Dashed up there, all with a

lot of experience. It might come down to 1 particular shot, or a bit

of bad luck, and that is just the way it goes. -- all big names up

there, all with a lot of experience. Charley Hull was way down, but she

got back into it. So you never know. Beatriz Recari has chipped up nicely

to about two feet. Almost identical to the 1 before.

APPLAUSE She could have done with that 1

going in. Bunker left for so run -- for So

Yeon Ryu. All you can do here is splash it out again. She has done

very neatly. APPLAUSE Have you seen this course change

much over the years? Yes, just a little bit, the 17th used to be a

par 3. They got rid of that, and put in the 12. They put in some new

tees. The greens were in bad shape a few years ago, they took them all

out and relayed them. They have this thing whereby a stretch of water

runs beneath some greens. Some of them can go a bit brown. But it is a

classic. For par. It is quite tricky to see the lines. Almost dead

straight. APPLAUSE That was a very important putt, I

feel. 173 to the pin, but 151 to the front. And that is important.

8-iron. And she has just dragged it a hair. Did you say in 8-iron? Yes.

Really, good God. She gives it a fair hit. I thought it was a

different hole. 8-iron... The head still. -- keep the head still.

APPLAUSE Good up and down for Beatriz Recari.

She remains at level par. If they could both finish with a couple of

falls that would smarten them up enormously. It would put them in

good shape tomorrow. -- fours. 17 players so far have broken par.

Which is a great improvement on the previous two days. Everybody has

been behaving, they have been unemployed, and had a nice day out.

They have proper shoes on. Don't slip!

137 left the So Yeon Ryu. She has a wedge. She will be trying to pitch

it. 10, maybe 12 short. Bound to take 1 high bounce. She has been a

little bit aggressive with her shots. She might feel hard done by

by the end of the day, but that is links golf. Cracking shot. Pity she

did not get a bit of a stop on it. It might have ended up about 7 or 8

feet away. APPLAUSE It is a par 5, she has had a cute

tales of woe -- view tales of woe today. -- a few.

Playing partner in a perfect spot. Good distance. Just go to threaded

through the mounds. I say just, if you can get plenty of run. That was

almost out before she struck it, the tee. That is cantering down the

fairway. That is a splendid drive. Maybe 1 day away from a championship

victory. She seemed a bit disturbed by that last 1. She almost turned

away in disgust. I could not believe she hit an 8-iron. 20 yards short of

the green, but kicked into... Well, it isn't too bad. You have got to

hit this hard enough to get it out and forward. If you don't, you could

just knock it into the bank in front of you. Yes, it's not terrible. She
