There has been plenty of drama in qualifying for the Austrian Grand

Prix today, and with news of all of that we can jointly McKenzie for

inside F1. Hello and welcome to Inside F1 from

Austria. It is a gorgeous circuit that has thrown up many surprises

over the years and it has done it again today. I am joined by David

Coulthard. In 2001, Michael Schumacher was on pole position but

memories of this track? It is a very fine on track to drive. Difficult to

position the car because the apex is some way round the corner. Have to

be very committed. Easy to make a mistake. Expect to see lots of

people running off`line. There are two DRS zones. The corners make it

difficult, and it was a big emphasis on qualifying. Considering this is

the Red Bull ring, it is not a circuit that is really suiting them?

No, you need a lot of power coming off the turns. It is not a very

abrasive surface here. We have seen cars over the weekend getting all

four wheels off the circuit. Difficult to manage. They know that

if they take the gamble at the second last corner, if they get it

right it is worth taking the risk. There was little sign of the drama

to come on Q 1 in the Red Bull Ring as both cater hams and Sauber's

missed the cut. Sutil's run`off was a sign of things to come. Q 2 sauce

close times. But the biggest scalp was that of Vettel. The four times

world champion was not fast enough. Daniel Ricardo graduated into Q 3

without a problem. Jenson Button was thwarted not helped by car problems

sailed through. Valry bottom ta sailed through. Valry bottom ta

Bottas had his lap time cancelled. On his final attempt, he locked his

rear tyres and finds himself ninth on the grid. Rosberg lost his chance

because of Hamill ton's spin. The Williams cars will start first and

#1eked here in Austria after a day that wars the glory days of Jones,

Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill. Really emotional day for us, for me,

for Williams. I think it was really a great job we did today. I did a

perfect lap at the end. Not just perfect. I lost a bit of time in the

first sector. But it was enough to be in front. Enough to be pole. The

first run of Q 3 was much better for me. Even the second run for I went

wide I was quite a bit down on the lap time. That was not going to be

the happen anyway before the mistake. A little unfortunate. I

would have preferred to be B 1. But as a team, it is maximum result we

could have got today. So very good. The chance was there for sure. I had

to back out of it. I have to lift at least two tenths. To be safe I need

to make`up three tenths. So I backed out of it and that was it. Deputy

team principal of Williams, Clare will yams is here. What a fabulous

day. Describe the emotions there today? It's packed. It is so nice to

have everybody here celebrating with us. As Frank says, it is qualifying.

We haven't won anything yet. We have to focus on tomorrow and make sure

we turn what is a great grid position for us into some points. It

was the first time since 2003 we've had front lock`out. I remember those

days, David will as well. It is such an amazing feeling. So much work's

gone on behind the scenes for a little over a year now. It is great

to be in this position. I just hope we can maintain it moving forward

into the rest of the season. You must remember those days as a little

girl watching it on BBC on the television. Here you are, deputy

team principle and you have a front row lock`out. I don't think it's

sunk in yet. I hope it will. I hope it does before tomorrow in case we

lose out in the race. I remember those times. The past few years are

weird. I've grown up around the team being so successful. To be working

for the team when we haven't been, it is difficult when you come to

races and are not scoring points. It is hard whenever works so hard. I'm

so pleased for everybody at Williams who's worked so hard and stuck with

it. And our partners who've always continued to believe in us and

support us. There's been a real feeling this season, through winter

testing and early racing, as if there were missed opportunities. Is

there a belief this is much more than a Saturday glory. As you've

stressed, it is nothing won today. Can you really make this stick for

tomorrow? Is this the first steps towards a full come back for

Williams challenging for the front and wins? From testing, we looked

like we had a competitive car. When we went racing we proved that. Today

isn't a flash in the pan. We got a front row lock`out on merit. Our car

was the quickest out there. We need to be grateful for that and pat

ourselves on the back a little bit. I hope it is a sign of things to

come for the team. We have turned that corner and we can maintain this

level of consistency. I don't think anyone expected it to happen so

quickly. When you awe'd some missed opportunities early in the in the

season, Pa bit of that was bad luck. Some of that was us still growing as

a team, work going on mind the scenes to have strategies in place

to captain capitalise on the car. We can see Felipe Massa. He's an

established driver. A veteran driver with all his expertise. Stolzingy is

growing up with you. Is the atmosphere in the team good? The

atmosphere hasn't been as good for as long as I can remember. We are so

lucky. We have the experience of Felipe complimented by Bottas. He's

a super star in the making. Really pleased for Felipe. He's had a

difficult few races, some bad luck. We haven't necessarily put him in

the best position to score points. For him, this is great. Ahead of the

race, will you be sitting with your father and the drivers and having

that reminder conversation about race hard but don't touch your

team`mate? I think they know that. Felipe is so experienced. Bottas

knows what he has to do. Our drivers know how important it is for the

team they are team players and they work together to get as many points

for us in the constructer's championship as possible. At the end

of the day that is the most important thing for an independent

team like Williams. To maximise their points. I'm sure the engineers

will have that conversation but they both know that. I can see a trophy

in there already. You've had a driver win the GP 2 day. We've had a

good day today. Front row lock`out and your test driver winning the GP

2. Felipe was hospitalised with food poisoning for a few days. To drive

on a track he hasn't drink on before is great. There will be some

Martinis drunk at Williams this afternoon. After the high and low in

Canada, you need and want to have a good result for all the work

everyone put in back at the factory? We are P 6 in the championship at

the moment. I don't think we should be. We have to get those points

tomorrow. We'll see. We can show you highlights of the Austrian Grand

their hands for success tomorrow but no`one will deny them their
