Hello and welcome to the ESPN Wide World of Sport in Orlando | :00:42. | :00:45.
It's day three of the Invictus Games and with the temperature reaching | :00:46. | :00:52.
30 degrees round the park, the pool made for a good | :00:53. | :00:55.
But the swimmers lining up on the side weren't there for just | :00:56. | :01:01.
a dip and we'll bring you all the action in a moment. | :01:02. | :01:03.
The UK team are certainly not sitting around, even | :01:04. | :01:06.
in the sitting volleyball, and we'll have the highlights | :01:07. | :01:08.
Plus, well be revealing who'll be joining Prince Harry | :01:09. | :01:16.
We will meet one of the stars of the rugby exhibition match. | :01:17. | :01:21.
It was a busy day in the athletics yesterday and the UK team continued | :01:22. | :01:24.
to find success on both the track and in the field. | :01:25. | :01:27.
Tanni Grey Thompson and Mike Costello watched events unfold. | :01:28. | :01:29.
Men's 400 metres for above the knee amputees. | :01:30. | :01:44.
A group of five runners. Pre-race favourite drawn towards the outside | :01:45. | :01:48.
on the left of the screen there. William Reynolds of the United | :01:49. | :01:53.
States. He is bounding clear as they reach the back straight now. They | :01:54. | :02:03.
head to the halfway stage. Sinnet who lost both legs above the knee in | :02:04. | :02:10.
an IED blast in Afghanistan was in hospital during the 2014 games and | :02:11. | :02:15.
looking to press here. He comes to the home straight. He is closing on | :02:16. | :02:29.
Reynolds. Into the home straight. What a boost this will be. They head | :02:30. | :02:33.
down the home straight. Reynolds appears to be weakening now. Sinnott | :02:34. | :02:38.
starts to draw clear. This is going to be gold for Britain. And for Luke | :02:39. | :02:43.
Sinnott. He takes the title. Another title for Britain. Brilliant run. A | :02:44. | :02:50.
horrible distance. That's not what I wanted to do. So happy. | :02:51. | :02:55.
Unbelievable. Can't believe I got it. | :02:56. | :02:57.
Clear from Warren in second place. It could be that Pierce comes | :02:58. | :03:03.
through to take the bronze medal for Britain. To the line. Whoops and | :03:04. | :03:08.
cheers again. Another title for the United States. | :03:09. | :03:12.
Britain in silver and bronze medal positions. | :03:13. | :03:19.
Credible performances from both Jennifer Warren and Pearce there. | :03:20. | :03:26.
Nerys Pierce taking bronze behind Kelly Elmlinger. It's one of the | :03:27. | :03:31.
best championships I have been to. To see the athletes, despite what | :03:32. | :03:33.
they've been through, to come through and compete and they smile. | :03:34. | :03:40.
They enjoy themselves. The atmosphere is just great. | :03:41. | :03:48.
Fergus Hurst follows up with another silver here in Orlando. He won also | :03:49. | :04:00.
in the shot putt. There were more medals in the discus with 16. 7 | :04:01. | :04:05.
metres to win a silver medal for Kelly. Finally, it was two golds for | :04:06. | :04:11.
Vicky Parrott in the field events. Her first game in the shot | :04:12. | :04:14.
competition and followed it up with gold in the discus in the same | :04:15. | :04:18.
classification. I have two gold medals. I couldn't be happier right | :04:19. | :04:22.
now. If you told me I was going to be out here this time last year I | :04:23. | :04:26.
would have said no chance. But here I am! If you are wondering why | :04:27. | :04:30.
Linford Christie is out here, Olympic gold medallist, a lot of | :04:31. | :04:33.
athletes use this part of the world for their warm weather training. | :04:34. | :04:34.
They do. It's a perfect climate and the | :04:35. | :04:41.
facilities are outstanding. He is similarly impressed. He weren't | :04:42. | :04:44.
wearing the string vest like he normally does! If you are wondering | :04:45. | :04:49.
why they're called the Invictus Games, for the Latin sholers you | :04:50. | :04:51.
will know it means uncon-Chered. Which is a word that sums up | :04:52. | :04:56.
all those competing. It's also the title given | :04:57. | :04:58.
to the famous poem written by William Ernest Henley and quoted | :04:59. | :05:01.
by Sir Winston Churchill, Martin Sir John Hurt kindly | :05:02. | :05:03.
agreed to lend his voice Out of the night that covers me, | :05:04. | :05:07.
Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be | :05:08. | :05:22.
For my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance | :05:23. | :05:29.
I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance, | :05:30. | :05:39.
My head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears | :05:40. | :05:56.
Looms but the Horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years | :05:57. | :06:03.
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait | :06:04. | :06:11.
the gate, How charged with | :06:12. | :06:16.
punishments the scroll. Thank you again to Sir John Hurt. | :06:17. | :06:36.
Powerful and emotional that. Even for me as a former athlete I can see | :06:37. | :06:41.
and feel how much more than sport she is Games are, it's incredible. | :06:42. | :06:46.
It's absolutely boiling! Today, in particular, temperatures seem to | :06:47. | :06:49.
have risen. You would think it would be cooler in the pool. | :06:50. | :06:56.
Mike Goody is a veteran of the 2014 Games where he won five gold medals. | :06:57. | :07:03.
Once again, this time in Florida, he's looking | :07:04. | :07:05.
The last games were amazing. Can he win it? I can't expect it to be as | :07:06. | :07:16.
absolutely huge as it turned out to be. It certainly superseded anything | :07:17. | :07:21.
I ever dreamed or expected or believed it could be. He is timing | :07:22. | :07:25.
it well. Goodness it's going to be close. Goody wins the gold. I didn't | :07:26. | :07:33.
think ultimately I would walk away with five medals. The feeling | :07:34. | :07:38.
buzzing through you of wow, this is something really special. I think | :07:39. | :07:42.
for me it was not only at the Games, but the follow-on from that, I am | :07:43. | :07:45.
still in contact now with multiple guys from all over the world that I | :07:46. | :07:52.
swam and watched play. Wheelchair rugby, basketball, all different | :07:53. | :07:55.
sports. Since the last Games I thought I really want to pursue this | :07:56. | :08:01.
actually, I have a good shot. My swimming is vastly improving, let's | :08:02. | :08:05.
give this a real shot. I took time off from working and now I train | :08:06. | :08:10.
full-time. You only live once. Just do it. When I am in the water I feel | :08:11. | :08:19.
free. You know, I am free with my thoughts, as well, which helped my | :08:20. | :08:23.
PTSD. I am alone, the water rushing over my ears, it's a unique sound. | :08:24. | :08:29.
For me it's just heaven. I train six days a week. My training schedule | :08:30. | :08:34.
could be quite intense at times. I do running, I do three lots of two | :08:35. | :08:39.
hours gym sessions, so my training isn't all just in the pool up and | :08:40. | :08:43.
down, up and down, it's tailored with my swimming coach and strength | :08:44. | :08:47.
and conditioning coach to hopefully give me the best outcome. On this | :08:48. | :08:51.
drill get nice high elbow position. So the thumb comes up to the | :08:52. | :08:55.
shoulder, OK? I suppose my ultimate goal would be to represent my | :08:56. | :08:59.
country like I used to in the military. Be part of something | :09:00. | :09:05.
great. Whether it be at the Commonwealth Games or the | :09:06. | :09:07.
Paralympics, that's what I am determined to do. The next Games in | :09:08. | :09:11.
Florida are going to be amazing. I am really looking forward to it. The | :09:12. | :09:16.
Americans have seen what we did in London and they're going to try to | :09:17. | :09:19.
make it better, I emphasise the word try. The next Games are going to be | :09:20. | :09:27.
a little bit more competitive in the sense of the races, especially for | :09:28. | :09:30.
swimming, are going to be close. There is strong competition from | :09:31. | :09:33.
guys who have been training since the last Games. So, yeah, I am | :09:34. | :09:37.
feeling the pressure a little bit. The idea of the Invictus Games is to | :09:38. | :09:42.
get people motivated, whether it be us or other people or other injured | :09:43. | :09:45.
soldiers that haven't come through yet and to be frank, if that message | :09:46. | :09:51.
is going across, it doesn't matter if I am podium or not, to be honest. | :09:52. | :09:56.
So, how did Mike and the rest of the team get on this morning? Before we | :09:57. | :09:59.
find out, here are the classifications. | :10:00. | :10:38.
Well, let's go pool side where Mike Sewell and Rachael Latham, | :10:39. | :10:41.
our former Paralympic swimmer, were on hand to see if the team | :10:42. | :10:44.
This is a real opportunity for the UK to get a gold here. Katherine | :10:45. | :10:56.
Nightingale, formerly known as Katherine Thompson won four gold | :10:57. | :11:00.
medals at London in 2014. She's up for three in these finals in | :11:01. | :11:07.
Orlando. She has a real task here. She has. Katherine is going to have | :11:08. | :11:12.
to push it in final to take the gold medal again. | :11:13. | :11:13.
A slow start. Stuart was very slow. In lane two a | :11:14. | :11:22.
good start. Through comes Stuart now. It's pretty close in the | :11:23. | :11:28.
central area. Nightingale, Stuart and Williams. | :11:29. | :11:31.
The freestyle is all about the start and finish. This race looks like it | :11:32. | :11:34.
will go down to the finish. You can hardly pull away between the three | :11:35. | :11:38.
lanes in the middle. We are going to be seeing who gets the touch first. | :11:39. | :11:43.
It looks like it's going to be lane four for Stuart. Maybe it's | :11:44. | :11:47.
Williams? Williams comes through and wins the first gold for the UK! | :11:48. | :11:53.
Silver to Stuart. Bronze to Nightingale. | :11:54. | :11:57.
The UK has retained the gold. It's Zoe Williams. I said it was all | :11:58. | :12:01.
about the finish and Williams got a fantastic finish in the last five | :12:02. | :12:06.
metres of the race. You are at home in the water, how | :12:07. | :12:10.
was it? Incredible. The atmosphere is electric. Got my eye on the | :12:11. | :12:13.
competition, head down and powered through to the end. Is that the | :12:14. | :12:17.
first gold with more to come? Hope so. Really hope so. But three more | :12:18. | :12:21.
races to go. Yeah, it's going to be tough. It's going to be who has it | :12:22. | :12:25.
left in them to power to the end? Really hope there is three more | :12:26. | :12:29.
golds in there. This is the big race for the UK. Lanes three, four and | :12:30. | :12:33.
five are the lanes to look out for. All picked up medals in 2014 in this | :12:34. | :12:45.
particular race. Hurst took gold, Goody the silver and Reeson the | :12:46. | :12:50.
bronze. They were performing earlier this year at championships, they've | :12:51. | :12:53.
already had competition. They know what it's like to get in a pool and | :12:54. | :13:00.
race hard. Look out for lane six. Really quick off the blocks was Luke | :13:01. | :13:05.
Reeson. Out in front closely followed by the other two Brits. At | :13:06. | :13:12.
the moment it's Reeson from Goody and then Hurst. Reeson looks he is | :13:13. | :13:21.
just pulling out. Goody is clawing back into the last five metres. It's | :13:22. | :13:24.
going to be on the wall. Who is going to touch first? It's | :13:25. | :13:29.
incredibly tight T could have been Goody or Reeson. Goody takes it by | :13:30. | :13:35.
less than one 10th of a second. Mike Goody gets the gold. Luke Reeson the | :13:36. | :13:42.
silver. Almost a rotation of the medals from London 2014. Goody has | :13:43. | :13:48.
jumped from silver to gold. He is the champion. A lot of focus will be | :13:49. | :13:53.
on the man in lane four, David Wiseman, the captain of the UK | :13:54. | :13:57.
Invictus team and a captain in the Yorkshire Regiment. He missed out in | :13:58. | :14:01.
medals in the rowing this week. He is going to be wanting to get one of | :14:02. | :14:09.
these medals around his neck. Decent start by Wiseman. Doesn't come up | :14:10. | :14:12.
first, though. But he is in a good position in the middle in lane four. | :14:13. | :14:21.
Two competitors either side of him. It looks like at the moment that | :14:22. | :14:25.
David Wiseman is going to come through here. He is about half a | :14:26. | :14:29.
body length ahead into this final five metres. David Wiseman comes | :14:30. | :14:35.
through to win gold for the United Kingdom. Estonia takes silver. | :14:36. | :14:40.
Third, Galloway of the United States. What a celebration by David | :14:41. | :14:46.
Wieszman. Touched the wall, realised he got that gold medal and he was | :14:47. | :14:48.
fist pumping the air. I'm just so happy to be here, | :14:49. | :14:58.
competing, and really proud to be the team captain. The UK team on | :14:59. | :15:03.
mailing out there today. The gold medals continued for the UK. There | :15:04. | :15:09.
was gold in the 50 metre freestyle. Also in the 50 meter backstroke and | :15:10. | :15:15.
Katherine Nightingale, who was Catherine Thompson in London, won | :15:16. | :15:19.
four gold medals and got one here in the backstroke. Paul Vise in the 50 | :15:20. | :15:26.
metre backstroke also took gold, as did Ryan in the 50 metre back ISP | :15:27. | :15:34.
category. Expect all the action to be in that central area, lanes | :15:35. | :15:43.
three, four, five and six. Mike Goody the fastest in the heats in | :15:44. | :15:53.
Lane four. Comes out much, much later. Nathan Jones in lane three, | :15:54. | :15:57.
slightly behind him as well. Jones just in front of Goody, making up | :15:58. | :16:04.
the ground. Great for Goody to get that underwater start, saving his | :16:05. | :16:08.
energy for when you need is to swim and he is swimming now. Swimming is | :16:09. | :16:13.
strong in a gold medal position. The UK are on for a one, two, three. | :16:14. | :16:19.
Mike Goody, his second of the Invictus Games. The silver has gone | :16:20. | :16:23.
to Luke Reeson. Nathan Jones taking the bronze. A full complement of | :16:24. | :16:30.
medals for the United Kingdom. Mike Goody has done it again. Yes, a one, | :16:31. | :16:36.
two, three for the UK. Double gold, how does it feel? Brilliant, | :16:37. | :16:42.
absolutely brilliant. I came here to defend the title, not doing too bad | :16:43. | :16:45.
so far. Still got the 100 meter freestyle to go and the open relay. | :16:46. | :16:53.
We lingered. The UK added to its collection of gold medals as the | :16:54. | :16:56.
morning continued. Zoe Williams picked up her second in the 50 metre | :16:57. | :17:01.
breaststroke. Paul Vise did likewise in the breaststroke and in the eye | :17:02. | :17:09.
SBC of breaststroke Luke Reeson and in Taylor picked up their first gold | :17:10. | :17:14.
medals of the Invictus Games in the polls. Williams got her third gold | :17:15. | :17:20.
in the 100 meter freestyle. In men's 100 meter freestyle ISC. Goody out | :17:21. | :17:29.
in front, head of Reeson. Jones is being court. Mike Goody leads from | :17:30. | :17:39.
Luke Reeson, Reeson might be catching him here. Reason is pushing | :17:40. | :17:43.
really hard for the gold medal. Can Goody told him off? You might not be | :17:44. | :17:50.
able to. Goody takes gold, just ahead of his compatriots, Luke | :17:51. | :17:56.
Reeson. Bronze also goes to the United Kingdom, Nathan Jones. But | :17:57. | :18:01.
what a finish and a push by Goody, who is exhausted. Reason dubbed deep | :18:02. | :18:05.
in that final five metres and tried to claw his way back to win the | :18:06. | :18:09.
gold, but Goody got the touch and the gold. 50 metres to go now. It is | :18:10. | :18:20.
David Wiseman who heads out in front at the moment. The closers man to | :18:21. | :18:26.
him is in lane five, of Estonia. David Wiseman, with 25 metres to go, | :18:27. | :18:32.
has a chance of another gold medal. Ian Taylor as well, back in fifth | :18:33. | :18:36.
place. At the moment it looks like UK going to get gold and Estonia are | :18:37. | :18:41.
silver. Galloway of the United States in third. David Wiseman has | :18:42. | :18:46.
done enough and takes gold. Silver goes to Estonia and Ronin Galloway | :18:47. | :18:52.
of the United States takes the bronze. It is a big win for David | :18:53. | :18:58.
Wiseman. David Wiseman made that look easy as he glided into the | :18:59. | :19:03.
finish to take his gold medal. The final event of the swimming at the | :19:04. | :19:10.
Invictus Games 2016, the Mick asked freestyle. UK are the favourites, | :19:11. | :19:12.
and the defending champions. -- Nick terrific start by Michael Goody, out | :19:13. | :19:26.
in front. The United States are in second. In third place, Canada. Mike | :19:27. | :19:32.
hoodie is powering down this first 50. He will be overtaken by Luke | :19:33. | :19:36.
Reeson. We wait for him to touch the wall. He cannot dive in until the UK | :19:37. | :19:45.
team have touched, there we go. Reeson has dived in in gold medal | :19:46. | :19:50.
position. A clean handover. Luke Reeson in the yellow cap in lane | :19:51. | :19:54.
five, couple of lengths clear of the United States, in lane two. Sean | :19:55. | :20:02.
Walsh doing the second leg for them. Canada are in third place, in lane | :20:03. | :20:06.
one and they are stretching away here. We said they were the | :20:07. | :20:11.
favourites. 100 metres to go, into the water goes Fergus Hurst. Another | :20:12. | :20:17.
clean take over 13 UK. It is important to note every swimmer | :20:18. | :20:21.
swimming for the UK has won medal already in the finals this morning. | :20:22. | :20:27.
An incredibly strong team in this relay. They won it in a time of | :20:28. | :20:35.
1.53.41 in 2014. Are they under break that record? The final length | :20:36. | :20:39.
starts with the captain of the UK team. Not just the UK team but the | :20:40. | :20:48.
overall team. 25 metres to go. David Wiseman is powering through the last | :20:49. | :20:52.
25 metres of this freestyle relay. It is clear team UK are going to | :20:53. | :20:59.
take gold. And who else to take the gold on the last race of the morning | :21:00. | :21:06.
van the captain of the UK? David Wiseman has another gold, he has led | :21:07. | :21:11.
to the UK home. That was an exciting race, everybody loves a relay. Just | :21:12. | :21:19.
to confirm, the UK take gold with a tame of Goody, Fergus Hurst and | :21:20. | :21:29.
David Wiseman. The bosses happy, a phenomenal morning at the ball. -- | :21:30. | :21:33.
at least Lin. Joining Mike we have UK | :21:34. | :21:37.
Team Captain David Wiseman Welcome. A huge congratulations. | :21:38. | :21:48.
They have been analysing their races. | :21:49. | :21:52.
Rachel you've swam at the Paralympics, no mean | :21:53. | :21:54.
Can you talk about is winning in an outdoor pool? It hasn't stopped | :21:55. | :22:04.
these guys. Especially in the backstroke, if you think about it | :22:05. | :22:07.
normally and an indoor pool you have something to guide you down the | :22:08. | :22:13.
pool. In Orlando in an outdoor pool you are staring at the blue sky. And | :22:14. | :22:18.
the sun. Yes. We saw a number of these swimmers clashing their arms | :22:19. | :22:24.
down the lane rope. Some of them swam up to 70 metres by the time | :22:25. | :22:29.
they had wind it down the pool. Pretty precarious. I suppose you | :22:30. | :22:35.
probably don't have that chance to prepare in the UK in an outdoor | :22:36. | :22:41.
pool? The only one ice climbing was a lido. What was it like? After you. | :22:42. | :22:47.
To have the sunshine and all of that, it adds value to this whole | :22:48. | :22:52.
experience of being here in Florida. As Rachel said, it is very different | :22:53. | :22:56.
and had to guide yourself across the 50 metres. We all know these games | :22:57. | :23:01.
are about more than just the sport, more than the medals. You spoke | :23:02. | :23:07.
about that, Mike. What has swimming meant for you? Swimming with my tool | :23:08. | :23:11.
to recovery, not just physical but psychological. It got me out of what | :23:12. | :23:16.
I call my dark days, clinical alcoholism, horrible thoughts going | :23:17. | :23:19.
through my head. It was a real turning point. That was back in | :23:20. | :23:25.
2009-10. A couple of years after Rovers injured. It was my tool. For | :23:26. | :23:30.
Prince Harry to create the Invictus Games, and it became a platform to | :23:31. | :23:37.
greater things. They gave me an opportunity to excel and pursue my | :23:38. | :23:41.
rehabilitation further, as well as these guys from around the world, | :23:42. | :23:45.
which is superb. Can you tell us a little about what you have had to | :23:46. | :23:50.
deal with, David? We know from this speech Prince Harry wants to shine a | :23:51. | :23:53.
light and get the conversation on hidden injuries. Tell us what it's | :23:54. | :23:59.
like. Terrible times in Afghanistan. My small team treated 26 casualties | :24:00. | :24:06.
in a very busy two-week period, including five dead. | :24:07. | :24:10.
Those kind of experiences leave scars. We have to understand | :24:11. | :24:15.
psychological injury is a completely normal reaction to abnormal | :24:16. | :24:18.
situations. I was really fortunate in that I was diagnosed with | :24:19. | :24:24.
psychological injury early on in my recovery process and I had the right | :24:25. | :24:27.
treatment at the right time, from the right professionals. Actually | :24:28. | :24:33.
that has led to me having a condition which is completely and | :24:34. | :24:36.
utterly manageable now. The last thing I would like to say that is, | :24:37. | :24:41.
wouldn't it be fantastic if in the future, as we are doing now, | :24:42. | :24:45.
conversing normally about psychological injury and wider | :24:46. | :24:51.
mental health issues in the same way we do physical issues? That is a | :24:52. | :24:56.
utopia we can reach. What you are a fantastic example of that. Anybody | :24:57. | :25:02.
at home watching this now... You guys are the most brilliant | :25:03. | :25:05.
ambassadors for that. So thank you. You only have to listen to David and | :25:06. | :25:13.
Mike to see, to realise how important these Games are to those | :25:14. | :25:18.
competing. If you are interested in learning any more about hidden | :25:19. | :25:23.
injuries or want some help, all the information is there on the website. | :25:24. | :25:30.
We have tonnes of highlights, have a look at these. Hello, Orlando. | :25:31. | :25:44.
I wish you all all the best of luck and I hope you have a lot of fun | :25:45. | :25:48.
along the way. Have fun. # Gravity will hold us down | :25:49. | :26:13.
# Gravity will hold us # Gravity will hold us down | :26:14. | :26:30.
# I'm the only one to get you # The only one to figure you out | :26:31. | :26:40.
# You're the person I can go to # The person I can't live without | :26:41. | :26:50.
# More than any body else alive # Gravity can hold us down | :26:51. | :26:58.
# Can understand the logic of how we came to be | :26:59. | :27:03.
# What we're gaining from it # And who should dare to dream | :27:04. | :27:11.
# Because I'm the only one to get you | :27:12. | :27:14.
# The only one to figure you out # And there's nothing left to go | :27:15. | :27:18.
through # Just look at where we are right | :27:19. | :27:20.
now # It don't matter what they told | :27:21. | :27:34.
us a # gravity will hold us down # Gravity can hold us | :27:35. | :27:48.
# Even gravity can't hold us down #. Good stuff so far. We have with us | :27:49. | :27:54.
two of the key people behind these games, Vicky Gosling and Ken Fisher. | :27:55. | :27:59.
Welcome both of you. Just getting a few minutes of your time at the | :28:00. | :28:03.
moment is very fallible. Vicki, give us your impression of how things are | :28:04. | :28:08.
going and how delighted you are. It is fantastic, the atmosphere is | :28:09. | :28:11.
buzzing. People are making it and the competitors are in their | :28:12. | :28:16.
element. You came to the Invictus Games in 2014. What was it about | :28:17. | :28:20.
those games that made you decide, I'm going to bring them here to | :28:21. | :28:25.
Florida? I think they just needed a bigger platform. This is so | :28:26. | :28:30.
compelling. They needed to be seen. Bigger than London? And our Olympic | :28:31. | :28:37.
Park? Just a little. Only because we have more competitors than London. | :28:38. | :28:43.
And a little less rain. And an outdoor pool. It has been perhaps | :28:44. | :28:48.
one of the trickier elements for you, in terms of getting it set up | :28:49. | :28:51.
question not the biggest hurdle was not having a pool. Not having a | :28:52. | :28:56.
pool, so where do we go from there? We decided we would build a pool. I | :28:57. | :29:02.
think getting the pool in place to start with was an interesting one. | :29:03. | :29:12.
We are looking at it now. It took no time at all! It is a pool that | :29:13. | :29:17.
travels around the world? It came to us from Italy. It is going to | :29:18. | :29:23.
Nebraska now, to be used in the Olympic trials that the US swim | :29:24. | :29:29.
team. So it can be reused. Environmentally friendly. What was | :29:30. | :29:33.
it like, the opening ceremony, when you came out and made that speech? | :29:34. | :29:39.
It was surreal, what am I doing here? It all of a sudden hit me F | :29:40. | :29:45.
you look you will see me take a giant breath and I said, well, it's | :29:46. | :29:49.
time to go. It's show time. And it was a great show. And it has been | :29:50. | :29:53.
and continues to be a great show, as well. You must just meet so many | :29:54. | :29:57.
people here who constantly remind you if you dare think I am a bit | :29:58. | :30:01.
tired today or this is actually an exhausting job that actually this is | :30:02. | :30:05.
so worth it and incredibly motivating. It is worth it. Somebody | :30:06. | :30:08.
that came yesterday that actually has come all the way from the UK | :30:09. | :30:13.
that is not taking part but saw some of the competitors competing and | :30:14. | :30:17.
decided that she needed to get here. She's clearly injured and she was | :30:18. | :30:21.
military. The fact that she's here says that we are doing what we are | :30:22. | :30:24.
supposed to be doing with Invictus and you see the men and women | :30:25. | :30:32.
training. Yesterday with Dave hen son was mind-blowing and today in | :30:33. | :30:39.
the pool, yes, the Brits are doing well! There isn't an official table | :30:40. | :30:44.
of medals, obviously. We might have one later. I can guarantee Vicky has | :30:45. | :30:51.
a table of medals. And not written down all up here. I keep gloating. | :30:52. | :30:55.
It's about friendship first and foremost but we will keep a tally, | :30:56. | :30:59.
don't worry about that, Ken. Thank you so much. | :31:00. | :31:01.
We're being hosted fantastically well by the Americans | :31:02. | :31:02.
here in Orlando, but what's life like for military veterans | :31:03. | :31:05.
JJ and former US marine Ronnie Jimenez shared | :31:06. | :31:08.
How you doing? Nice to meet you. Nice to meet you. What sports are | :31:09. | :31:28.
you taking part in? Competing in cycling. Normally I compete in | :31:29. | :31:34.
swimming, the cycling, of course and use whatever else they throw me | :31:35. | :31:40.
into. What actually happened? Well, in Iraq in 2003 we got shot at by a | :31:41. | :31:49.
rocket-propelled grenade and in 2010-11 during deployment to | :31:50. | :31:52.
Afghanistan we were on night patrol and my engineer stepped on an IED | :31:53. | :31:59.
killing him and I broke my back. Now I am still working on my recovery. | :32:00. | :32:03.
But things are going good. When you do a job as a marine you spend time | :32:04. | :32:08.
cold, wet, miserable carrying heavy stuff, but you are like I miss it. I | :32:09. | :32:12.
miss it every day. Sglp Thank you. Do you guys have a | :32:13. | :32:19.
military discount? We do. Awesome. Thank you. That military discount is | :32:20. | :32:24.
that normal? Yeah, for the most part. I could count on one hand the | :32:25. | :32:27.
amount that don't do it. Do you have that in the UK? Not really. I could | :32:28. | :32:33.
probably count on these hands that amount that do it. Wow. You get them | :32:34. | :32:38.
pretty much in restaurants and movies, whoever decides to offer | :32:39. | :32:42.
them. It's a good selection. If somebody sees you are in the | :32:43. | :32:44.
military will they thank you for your service? Yeah, they always do. | :32:45. | :32:49.
They let you know that you are not forgotten. Do they do that in the | :32:50. | :32:53.
UK? I know they care and people appreciate what we have done. | :32:54. | :32:57.
They're not - they won't usually come up and shake your hand about | :32:58. | :33:00.
it. But it's one of the nice things about coming here, I guess. Taking | :33:01. | :33:04.
part in Invictus in 2014 was the closest I ever felt to what it was | :33:05. | :33:07.
like, why I joined the marines, to get to represent my country, to be | :33:08. | :33:13.
surrounded by a team. And to sort of push myself towards something. I | :33:14. | :33:16.
guess to put a British uniform on again. | :33:17. | :33:19.
You must be excited about getting to do that? Oh, yeah. Just putting on | :33:20. | :33:26.
the shirt and having - it gives you a sense of purpose again, that sense | :33:27. | :33:30.
of belonging. Gives you a lot of pride. It's going to be tough when a | :33:31. | :33:34.
guy with a British uniform on beats you on the court, though? No, that's | :33:35. | :33:39.
not going to happen. Good dark humour. It's incredible the attitude | :33:40. | :33:45.
to veterans in America. This is flor da, the third largest population of | :33:46. | :33:49.
vets. There are discounts, people go up and shake vets' hands and make | :33:50. | :33:53.
them feel appreciated. 1. 6 million vets here. That's the way it should | :33:54. | :33:57.
be. These guys risked their lives for the country. 40% discount on | :33:58. | :34:01.
milk shakes. JJ, drinks are on you!. In a moment we'll relive | :34:02. | :34:11.
what was a thrilling night But first, player coach | :34:12. | :34:12.
Charlie Walker gives us an insight into a sport that's anything | :34:13. | :34:15.
but sedate... Sitting volleyball, it's fast, and | :34:16. | :34:29.
very aggressive. Standing up looks like it's in slow | :34:30. | :34:33.
motion. A lot of people think you are sitting down nothing but it's a | :34:34. | :34:36.
fast pace. The net is lower, the court is smaller. Six guys and girls | :34:37. | :34:44.
really going at it. You have to be stronger, you have to be faster. | :34:45. | :34:48.
It's that fast that the serve can come straight back to the position | :34:49. | :34:52.
you are supposed to be in and if you have not gone into that you are | :34:53. | :34:55.
letting the rest of the team down. You can block a serving sitting | :34:56. | :34:58.
volleyball and some part of the backside must be in contact with the | :34:59. | :35:06.
floor when you play the ball. Three classifications in the Games, minor | :35:07. | :35:08.
injury, two-point player, a problem in at least one limb and then a | :35:09. | :35:13.
one-point problem with problems in two or more limbs. We are allowed 12 | :35:14. | :35:18.
points at any one time. Having both legs missing is an advantage at the | :35:19. | :35:21.
net, it's easier to go lat ram. In the back court having one leg or two | :35:22. | :35:26.
legs is easier because you can dig your heels in using that to propell | :35:27. | :35:30.
you backwards. There is a lot of control and aggression involved. | :35:31. | :35:33.
Face-to-face with your opponent through the net, you can give them | :35:34. | :35:36.
the eye. Get inside their heads. Ball is coming over, with a bit of | :35:37. | :35:40.
power, it gives you a chance to unleash fury on the other team. | :35:41. | :35:50.
We have a good mix this time. We have quiet calmer ones and I am | :35:51. | :35:54.
probably in that bracket. And a couple of outgoing loud energetic | :35:55. | :35:58.
ones. Charlie Walker is absolutely ruthless as a coach. I must have | :35:59. | :36:04.
done 100 press-ups today already. He wants the best. I think that's quite | :36:05. | :36:07.
diplomatic way to say he just wants the best for us. | :36:08. | :36:13.
Well could Charlie Walker and his players make their way | :36:14. | :36:15.
to the finals in the first of the team sports? | :36:16. | :36:18.
Sitting volleyball star Martine Wright and Chris Mitchell | :36:19. | :36:20.
found themselves on the edge of their seats. | :36:21. | :36:24.
In the first semifinal the UK team eased into a comfortable lead | :36:25. | :36:30.
against Georgia taking the first set 25-15. | :36:31. | :36:36.
Things turned sour in the second set. | :36:37. | :36:40.
The Georgians led by a British coach stormed back to level the match. | :36:41. | :36:46.
My goodness me! We have a turn-up here. It was nip and tuck all the | :36:47. | :36:51.
way through the deciding set. But this UK team finally prevailed and | :36:52. | :36:56.
were given a Royal seal of approval. This set up a repeat of the 2014 | :36:57. | :37:00.
final against the USA who despatched the Dutch in their semifinal. | :37:01. | :37:07.
The Americans took the first set with some dogged defensive play. | :37:08. | :37:13.
Oh, no! An unforced error. It gifts the | :37:14. | :37:23.
first set to the United States. We join the second set with the USA | :37:24. | :37:28.
leading 21-20. The commentators are Martine Wright and Chris Mitchell. | :37:29. | :37:36.
Great spike from the Americans. Wow! That was powerful. It's been like | :37:37. | :37:42.
that all day in here from the Americans. Smiling away. | :37:43. | :37:46.
When they get that structured play right it's brilliant. It's | :37:47. | :37:50.
unstoppable. Three points away from a gold medal, | :37:51. | :37:58.
the Americans. Can the UK stop them? That was a brilliant block. | :37:59. | :38:04.
I thought for a moment the USA had it. There is Prince Harry. He is | :38:05. | :38:09.
smiling. 22-21. Does he know something we do not? | :38:10. | :38:14.
Do the team know he is watching? Perhaps we should tell them. | :38:15. | :38:21.
That was a great find. Well done! | :38:22. | :38:31.
You see, it's finding that space. Number two, the former Gurkha | :38:32. | :38:40.
rifleman. Fantastic shot. A great, great riposte from the Americans. . | :38:41. | :38:46.
23-22. The UK are on the brink of losing | :38:47. | :38:49.
this gold medal match. It's a time-out. The UK call it. | :38:50. | :38:58.
Last chance saloon here in America. I am nervous. He looks nervous! You | :38:59. | :39:04.
are very calm, Martine. I am not really. Not inside. Two points away | :39:05. | :39:09.
from the gold. The United States serve. | :39:10. | :39:17.
Look at that. What play! Brilliant. Decisiveness. Gets get on and play | :39:18. | :39:20.
the game. He was right on the mark there. | :39:21. | :39:29.
A great shot from the Americans. They are one point away from the | :39:30. | :39:37.
gold medal here in the sitting volleyball final. | :39:38. | :39:44.
The coach, think about it, he says! Think about it. | :39:45. | :39:49.
This is the big chance. Serve comes in. Charlie Walker. | :39:50. | :39:58.
It's out! I saw Charlie Walker shout it's out. And now... | :39:59. | :40:03.
It's 24 each. You have to win by two points. | :40:04. | :40:08.
What a game. I can't even talk now. The tension! | :40:09. | :40:14.
Great block from the UK! Brilliant. Wow! Absolutely | :40:15. | :40:24.
brilliant. Fantastic. That's a shot whereas in the last | :40:25. | :40:28.
set they wouldn't have got, now they've learned from lessons and | :40:29. | :40:29.
have the block up. Wow, look at that. That's wonderful. | :40:30. | :40:50.
They can't bear to watch either. We need two clear points. | :40:51. | :40:56.
25 each. Great shot! That was effortless, wasn't it? He | :40:57. | :41:04.
saw the gap. Would you believe it? | :41:05. | :41:22.
They take the second set from nowhere. | :41:23. | :41:28.
Prince Harry is smiling. The fans are smiling. | :41:29. | :41:31.
But they haven't won it yet. It's one set all. Calm down boys! | :41:32. | :41:40.
STUDIO: The deciding set would be the first to 15 and the Americans | :41:41. | :41:42.
raced to an early lead. Feels like the writing is partly on | :41:43. | :41:53.
the wall here. 11-6 the US lead in this decisive third set in the gold | :41:54. | :42:01.
medal match. Charlie Walker is blocked. | :42:02. | :42:10.
A fumble from the US. The point... Even I saw that one. Yeah. But | :42:11. | :42:16.
sometimes if it's the first touch at the back you sometimes get away with | :42:17. | :42:20.
it because it seems defensive. Beautiful defensive play. | :42:21. | :42:32.
And again. A battle at the net. Who wins it? | :42:33. | :42:38.
The UK win it! What an important point. What a great rally. 11-8. A | :42:39. | :42:44.
three-point game. The UK have themselves back into this third set. | :42:45. | :42:49.
Yeah, that's the drive. That's the drive that you need. The third set, | :42:50. | :42:53.
a final set in a medal match. That's the drive. That's the hunger that | :42:54. | :42:57.
you need. Charlie Walker. | :42:58. | :43:07.
Goes long with the serve. Oh my goodness me. It was close. Let's | :43:08. | :43:13.
have a look. Oh my goodness! An inch. Didn't get | :43:14. | :43:15.
the ace. Good defensive play. A brilliant | :43:16. | :43:29.
player for the UK. Wearing the red jersey there. Defensive specialist. | :43:30. | :43:35.
We have some debate going on. 13-8 the United States lead. There is the | :43:36. | :43:43.
captain with the officials. What's going on he is saying? | :43:44. | :43:49.
They need to concentrate on the game. Oh my goodness me! Again that | :43:50. | :44:00.
was him saying what do you mean? They're looking at the officials. | :44:01. | :44:03.
You are right they've to get on with the game. They're one point away and | :44:04. | :44:09.
they're distracted. This is the gold medal point for the US. | :44:10. | :44:16.
They're set. Good block. Charlie Walker. | :44:17. | :44:21.
Charlie Walker keeps it in. It's desperate stuff from the UK. | :44:22. | :44:28.
Nail-biting stuff! UK clinging on here. | :44:29. | :44:34.
Oh, my goodness! A great keep. The ball goes out! And the United States | :44:35. | :44:36.
have their revenge. it like, the opening ceremony, when | :44:37. | :44:43.
you came out and made that speech? We just let the level drop in that | :44:44. | :44:57.
third. Just a little off the pace. The home team are going to want it | :44:58. | :45:03.
more, we will get it next time. The whole sitting volleyball final was | :45:04. | :45:04.
so dramatic and is an BBC I player. Congratulations on the silver, | :45:05. | :45:15.
although you can see what competitors you are. You are not | :45:16. | :45:19.
prepared to break a smile. Martine, how well did they do and what was | :45:20. | :45:24.
the difference in the end? I think the UK guys did dwell. Improvements. | :45:25. | :45:29.
I think you did fantastically on the defence side. -- did well. But I | :45:30. | :45:36.
think the improvements were greater on the US side. They have lots of | :45:37. | :45:41.
new players, big players, tall players, which is important in | :45:42. | :45:45.
sitting volleyball. Their set pieces and attacks, a lot of it was | :45:46. | :45:52.
brilliant. I think maybe the guys, I felt like they struggled technically | :45:53. | :45:55.
but also psychologically, as well. What was it like to play in that | :45:56. | :46:02.
intense atmosphere, especially the final set? What was going through | :46:03. | :46:06.
your minds? We decided we were going to play our game, no matter what. | :46:07. | :46:11.
When we got on the court, our heads got down and we started playing... | :46:12. | :46:17.
The atmosphere got you a little? We thought, we've got it. And later, | :46:18. | :46:26.
some mind games and that is why they got it. They are a good team. A | :46:27. | :46:33.
great comeback in the second set. And Georgia, improvement with a | :46:34. | :46:37.
British coach? Phenomenal. That was a surprise of the tournament. Taking | :46:38. | :46:42.
the UK guys to the third set. Richard Osborne is the coach for | :46:43. | :46:47.
Portsmouth in the UK. He has been I suppose what you would call cyber | :46:48. | :46:54.
coaching. Sounds a bit dodgy! Through social media and things like | :46:55. | :46:58.
that. He's been sending drills across he does with Portsmouth. | :46:59. | :47:03.
George have been sending footage of the match is back. It has obviously | :47:04. | :47:09.
had a huge effect. Charlie Walker, he has the rugby tomorrow. | :47:10. | :47:14.
Today. How will he pick himself up for | :47:15. | :47:20.
that? I think the boys will agree... No problem. You are not worried | :47:21. | :47:26.
about him? I spoke to him after the game yesterday and I said, how are | :47:27. | :47:30.
you going to get through the rugby? He said, don't worry about it, I'm | :47:31. | :47:34.
going to my room, sort out myself and tomorrow I will get it. I'd be | :47:35. | :47:39.
very worried, when he's talking like that! He wants revenge. Are you | :47:40. | :47:45.
going to support them? Yes. Well done. Thank you so much. | :47:46. | :47:49.
As you can tell from the sitting volleyball, the Games, | :47:50. | :47:51.
and these guys, are drawing great crowds, so we've been out | :47:52. | :47:54.
Denmark. I want the boys to win and I wish them the best of luck. They | :47:55. | :48:16.
are doing fantastic. It is big. LAUGHTER | :48:17. | :48:25.
Go big or go home! USA, USA, USA! We don't like to lose any more than the | :48:26. | :48:29.
UK does. There is some passion involved. CHEERING | :48:30. | :48:37.
: UK! Fairly lively out there. I am | :48:38. | :48:43.
delighted to say we are joined by team captains David Wiseman, | :48:44. | :48:55.
Will Reynolds Now as you know there's no official | :48:56. | :48:59.
medal table in Invictus but if there was one it would look | :49:00. | :49:06.
a bit like this... This is before the swimming today. | :49:07. | :49:14.
The United States out in front. A lot of swimming medals for us. Then | :49:15. | :49:23.
if we move on to... UK second, France third. Afghanistan still the | :49:24. | :49:31.
only team to yet pick up a medal. There isn't a table, but we like to | :49:32. | :49:36.
keep track. There is no medal table, but that may be why we can expect | :49:37. | :49:41.
what you guys in the US call trash talking. What has it been like, what | :49:42. | :49:48.
has the atmosphere been? We were just saying before we came on just | :49:49. | :49:53.
now, I was looking at the microphone my American friend has a buy with a | :49:54. | :49:57.
little worried he was going to drop it! LAUGHTER | :49:58. | :50:02.
Like the videos before the Invictus Games. Have you been keeping a tally | :50:03. | :50:09.
of the US medals? We are all very competitive. When I sit on the Court | :50:10. | :50:13.
across from my opponent, we all want to win. We all want to do our best. | :50:14. | :50:19.
At the end of the day, when the game is over, we get up, shake hands, go | :50:20. | :50:24.
get something to drink or eat and hang out. Your glass I is rather | :50:25. | :50:32.
spectacular. Thank you. They hand made it in Holland. Pretty | :50:33. | :50:40.
incredible. Can you tell me, what kind of impact you think the | :50:41. | :50:44.
Invictus Games is having at home in the Netherlands? Amazing, even | :50:45. | :50:48.
bigger than it was in London. Also the media is taking more... They use | :50:49. | :50:58.
it more and it's bigger. They know more about it. The people in Holland | :50:59. | :51:06.
love it. They follow it more. We know there is rivalry and team | :51:07. | :51:10.
sports will bring that out. Tell us what it is like when you are in that | :51:11. | :51:13.
hotel together and you are talking about other things, not just about | :51:14. | :51:18.
the sport, your shared experiences? Absolutely. People have been keeping | :51:19. | :51:25.
themselves to themselves, especially when the sport is going on, but I'm | :51:26. | :51:29.
looking forward to the end of the Invictus Games when we can all get | :51:30. | :51:32.
together, let our hair down and have a party at the end. I am really | :51:33. | :51:37.
looking forward to that. I remember after the 2014 games, we made some | :51:38. | :51:41.
really great and lasting friendships between the different nations. They | :51:42. | :51:47.
have been kept up over social media and we have been messaging each | :51:48. | :51:50.
other and saying how we were looking forward to these games. A unique set | :51:51. | :51:55.
of circumstances. Only you guys know what you have been through and can | :51:56. | :52:00.
share those experiences? And that is the thing. We come from different | :52:01. | :52:05.
countries, but we all share the experience of serving in the | :52:06. | :52:07.
military, from whatever nation we come from, for the most part we have | :52:08. | :52:13.
usually all been through the same kind of experience, not the exact | :52:14. | :52:17.
same experience or place, but we can relate to each other. I would agree. | :52:18. | :52:22.
On both of my tours to Iraq and Afghanistan I have been heavily | :52:23. | :52:26.
involved with other nations, especially our American friends. It | :52:27. | :52:29.
is fantastic we are here in the United States being able to | :52:30. | :52:33.
celebrate the Invictus Games. I want to thank you for being incredible | :52:34. | :52:37.
hosts. Thank you guys for coming in. Enjoy the rest of the week. Don't | :52:38. | :52:40.
party to hard! Just as the dust is settling | :52:41. | :52:44.
on a sizzling sitting volleyball Some people say I am not bad at | :52:45. | :52:47.
this. Smash it! But they are the real | :52:48. | :53:28.
deal. I am in Orlando and I cannot wait to see team UK try and defend | :53:29. | :53:32.
their title tomorrow in the semifinals against Denmark. It's | :53:33. | :53:35.
going to be awesome. It is going to be hotly contested, | :53:36. | :53:37.
incredible passion. Joining us now we have someone | :53:38. | :53:38.
you might not expect to be a wheelchair rugby player - | :53:39. | :53:41.
soprano and star of the opening In your kit, training hard. You do | :53:42. | :53:52.
have a heritage in rugby people might not know about? I play rugby | :53:53. | :53:59.
back home in London. Very excited to be taking part in the exhibition | :54:00. | :54:02.
match later today. What sort of rugby player are you? The pacey | :54:03. | :54:08.
winger or garage in their eyes out? LAUGHTER | :54:09. | :54:15.
IME play on the wing or full-back. You run marathons and you are an | :54:16. | :54:18.
athlete as Lovell stops singing is what you do for a living, but still | :54:19. | :54:23.
very passionate lover of sport? Absolutely. Some of the stories I | :54:24. | :54:27.
have heard here at the Invictus Games, it has been a very emotional | :54:28. | :54:31.
experience and something I'm very proud to be involved in. What will | :54:32. | :54:36.
or tactics be in wheelchair rugby? I'm quite quick in the chair, I'm | :54:37. | :54:43.
going to basically ram people. You know what you are saying about | :54:44. | :54:46.
avoiding people? That's what I would do. I am in the chair, I have | :54:47. | :54:52.
protection, I will go for it. I am surprised your insurance allows you | :54:53. | :54:56.
to do it. There were some serious injuries in the exhibition match. I | :54:57. | :55:00.
have a couple of bruises already. Competitive. What was it like, when | :55:01. | :55:06.
you went out there for the opening ceremony question out there is an | :55:07. | :55:11.
element of nerves when you perform anyway, and you saw the audience, a | :55:12. | :55:15.
different audience to what you are used to? Yes, in the rehearsals this | :55:16. | :55:20.
stadium was empty and I found that really nerve wracking. When it came | :55:21. | :55:23.
to my actual performance I walked out and saw all of these Invictus | :55:24. | :55:28.
Games competitors but the friends and families of those. For me, my | :55:29. | :55:33.
nerves just disappeared. I thought, this is not about me performing, | :55:34. | :55:38.
this is for you. It felt like a really intimate performance. If you | :55:39. | :55:42.
missed Laura's performance at the opening ceremony, take a look at | :55:43. | :55:47.
this. # To dream a dream of victory | :55:48. | :55:56.
# To feel the fight that drives us on | :55:57. | :56:11.
# Take our place in history #. You can catch the extended version | :56:12. | :56:18.
of the opening ceremony online. Time to well, latest medal winners, | :56:19. | :56:25.
Nathan Jones, Zoe Williams and Nerys Pearce. Come on in. APPLAUSE | :56:26. | :56:36.
Come on in, Nerys. Guys, great to have you here. We always like to | :56:37. | :56:40.
finish with a bit of heavy metal at the end of the show! Unfortunately, | :56:41. | :56:45.
look at that finger strapped up, it has put paid to your slimming | :56:46. | :56:50.
ambitions? It did. Today I had to strategically withdraw from the | :56:51. | :56:54.
swimming. Basketball finals really important. Still playing question at | :56:55. | :56:58.
absolutely, the Americans to get rid of me that easily. Slimming for you | :56:59. | :57:05.
Nathan, two bronze medals? Quite a successful day after my unsuccessful | :57:06. | :57:08.
day the other day. Tell us about your cuts and bruises? Lap a couple | :57:09. | :57:13.
of war wounds from having an altercation with a barrier. All | :57:14. | :57:18.
you've been through and the barrier gets you. The bike came off worse. | :57:19. | :57:27.
What was it like in the outdoor pool? Absolutely incredible. The | :57:28. | :57:31.
atmosphere has been a electric, so much fun. Add more to come. How | :57:32. | :57:36.
excited are you about the team sports? Looking forward to tonight | :57:37. | :57:41.
and the rub B. Thank you so much. Always good to end on a high. Laura, | :57:42. | :57:45.
we won't ask you to sing us out this time to stop tomorrow we are back at | :57:46. | :57:50.
eight o'clock with highlights of the wheelchair rugby, wheelchair tennis | :57:51. | :57:58.
and Addy is warming up for the wheelchair basketball. See you then, | :57:59. | :57:58.
goodbye. | :57:59. | :58:01. |
