Cliftonville v Glentoran Irish Cup Final

multi-million pound facelift for the last time inside Windsor Park as we

final? Very much. It is a big occasion. Cliftonville have the

chance to do the treble so it is a big moment in history for their

players. To get away cup final is a great achievement for Glentoran. It

takes away a lot of the disappointment they have had this

season. A lot of hype about this final. Could this be a classic?

think so. You have got to teams who want to pass the ball. On the pack,

Glentoran have passed it well. Andrew Waterworth has got electric

pace and can score a match-winning goal. But this Cliftonville team are

the best team I have seen in the Irish league for 15 years. I am

really looking forward to see if they can cope with them. Glentoran

arrived this afternoon. It has been a troubled season for the club off

the pitch. They struggle to pay wages to players and staff because

of serious cash flow problems but they are determined to put all that

behind them today despite being the underdogs. Cliftonville are league

champions, League Cup winners and they are gunning for a famous treble

today. The Reds are red hot favourite for success this

afternoon. Let's speak to some very interested spectators.

I am joined by Chris Walker, Tim McCann but we have got to start with

this man, James Knowles. Right up until the last minute you were

hoping for some form of reprieve because your contract at

Cliftonville has expired but it was not to be. I heard recently that my

contract had expired and when I first found out I was a bit gutted.

It is a big occasion for the fans and the players. It did not sink in

at the time but when I came here today, it is a bit gutting.

Looking through the Glentoran team, any surprises for you? It looks

pretty compact and it looks as though they are going to try to stop

the supply food to the two front men. It is a very tight midfield. I

think Glentoran will try to hit them on the break. We were arguing about

whether there is a Cliftonville or a Glentoran fun. We know you have just

come from work but a big day for Glentoran, given the year you have

had. It has been well documented how bad a season that lens have had. But

I think today, the lads can show their mettle and come away with a

result. What a day for Colin Nixon. We know he does not start but you

would expect him to feature at some point. I definitely expect him to

feature. He came into the first-team the same time as I did and I have

known him long time. He is a big hero at Glentoran and I will be get

a chance to show today how much support he has for the club as well.

There is a stiff breeze and will that have an impact on the game?

teams play the way they are capable of playing, I don't think it will be

a factor at all. Any concerns over Joe Gormley? No, I think his fitness

will bring him through today. McCann, is he a red lensman.

Today will be an emotional day for Glentoran's longest serving player,

Colin Nixon. The 34-year-old made his stepping in 1995 and has made a

record 793 appearances, scoring 87 start of the match is something that

will live with me. I like to think I have given the club might all over

the years. I am very thankful for the time I have had here and the

career I have had here. It has been a constant in my life for 20 years

and it will always hold a special place in my heart. The problems it

has had over the last few years have been well documented. I hope it will

push is forward. If you had at this around December, would we be in the

Irish Cup final, I don't think any of us would have believed it. But we

deserve this cup final and the success and I hope we reach out and

grab it. We deserve the chance of silverware for what we have been

through and the way we have handled ourselves. This group of players has

time I have had, I am very grateful for it. Every match is special. I

could be greedy and want another medal on Saturday. We can only put

our own house in order and Glentoran needs to win this trophy. It needs

to be back on top and it needs Irish Cup success. I will be doing my all

to make sure the Irish Cup comes back to Glentoran and it would be a

nice and fitting way to end my Lent torrent career. -- Glentoran.

Colin Nixon is on the bench this afternoon. Plenty of experience in

the line-up today. I think so. Jason Hill, Sean Ward. They have got lots

of experience. They have got lots of quality as well. They will be trying

to pull the strings today. You would imagine this afternoon that

Glentoran are going to do a lot of defending with the gift and they'll

attack being so much to the fore this season. Liam Boyce and Joe

Gormley have been a handful this season. The centre back pairing

dealing with them will be a huge issue in the game. I think Glentoran

come into the game with not an awful lot to lose. They are coming in off

the back of not a great season for them. They need to come with that

mindset and the day might just suit them little bit better. Cliftonville

have the opportunity to make history. It has been a frustrating

season for the Cliftonville captain. He has managed just 45 minutes of

football. But he is still very much It is about getting myself to be

supportive to the rest of the squad. Chatting to people and keeping my

face around. That has benefited me and I hope it benefited the squad.

On Saturday, I said that the players deserve to win the trophy.

Rabbi will be happy to be there to let them a lift it. I was grateful

to George, the club and the Peel -- people ask what it would be

like to have played. I do not think I would have played too many games!

They have scored consistently. I would have been hard pushed to get

a game! It is beyond the wildest dreams of the club. The supporters

would have been there hand-off to have two major trophies. Breaking

down the barriers we have tried to push towards a major trophy. The

players who won that, they were considered legends. People around

the club. They still talk about it. The history of the competition, it

is difficult. You get a couple of chances in your career if you are

lucky. I'm sure the squad will up this afternoon. Defensively,

this season, the best in the lead. Conceding 38 goals. Conor Devlin,

Conceding 38 goals. Conor Devlin, you know plenty about him. They

young player who started his career at Manchester United and had to

at Manchester United and had to rebuild his career. He has been

exceptional. He really has done exceptionally well this season. He

is focused on his football and this is a big shop window. Clubs have

been superb -- scores all the goals. Cliftonville's other players in a

central midfield, Ryan Catney and Johnson, they are sensational. They

dictate the tempo of the game. -- Johnston. They have been class this

year and they deserve everything they have been given. However, this

is a one-off cup final and Glentoran will have something to

say. Liam Boyce, he went to Germany and it did not work out and he came

back to rebuild his career. He has great touch and close control. Joe

Gormley has a hunger about him. They complement each other well. In

the earlier Cup final they were excellent. I have seen them a

couple of times this season. Would you like to see Liam Boyce get a

full-time move? I would like to see them. Joe Gormley is under the

radar because he has not played at international level. But they have

the raw materials to step up another level. We will see how they

get on. First, we can hear from a couple of interested fans.

We have a couple of celebrities. I will defer to. You have just been

Should anyone doubt your Cliftonville credentials, your

make of the match-up of the managers? Eddie Paterson, a former

Cliftonville manager, against Tommy Breslin. They seem to be great

exponents of attacking football. They had exceptional talent when

they played the game. Cliftonville together, manager and assistant

manager. Things move on. Eddie Paterson has gone to one of the big

two. He had a hard job. I have to take my hat off to him. He has

coped well and kept the team motivated in difficult

circumstances. When been -- when we played against them, the quality

was exceptional. They pass well. I am sure Eddie Paterson will be

thinking out there. Tommy Breslin has impressed me with his manners

of the pitch and how he handled everything and coped with the

players. Everything that has been thrown at him, he has been superb.

I have a great relationship with him and he is a top man. How much

would a win for Glentoran seal the season after a tremendously

difficult time? It would catch it off. What goes on behind the scenes,

I am not sure, that is a longer term problem. The solution lies

outside their hands of the management team and players. For

the work that has been put in, they have played despite the problems.

They have been motivated and competitive. They probably deserve

something from the season. The players, the wages, working in

difficult circumstances, this is the chance to take it today. Tommy

Breslin has done an exceptional job. It would be great this afternoon,

live on television, to see a good advertisement for the local game.

I hope so. I hope we get a goal in the first few minutes. To settle

the Cup final down. Cliftonville have been there all year. There

will be no surprise to them what is going on. They have played in a

final. They have handled the League and the big semi-final. Nothing

will worry them too much. It will be entertaining. How much will it

be on the mind of Cliftonville that they are being talked about as the

most successful team in their history? It is a factor. I played

in a team have a chance to win the four trophies. We came here and we

were beaten. We did not turn up on the day. We chased the game in the

they want to get the game started. The morning of a cup final, it is a

long time before the kick-off comes. You want to get the game started

and get the first touch of the ball and get started and put the nerves

behind Jude. I think they want to get it started. I am looking at the

day for the first time. May be they will freeze, maybe they will thrive.

You do not know how you will react. They do not play in front of these

crowds every week. You go down the tunnel and it is full. Of those

around. It could be a feisty contest as well. If you look at the two

been a super manager this year. is only two years in the job. I am

worked well for them. Glentoran take the applause of some 5000

What a season he has had. A standout player. He is a great player to

watch. He is such a talented footballer. Who knows whether this

is his last game. It would be a nice way for him to end his second time

because Joe Gormley is usually so deadly when he gets an opportunity.

If he had scored, it would have been his 30th goal of the season, making

him just the third Cliftonville player in the history of the club to

reach that mark in a season. Here is the chance. Look away now, Joe

Gormley. He is not going to get an easier chance to get to 30 goals. He

just takes his eye off the ball. think he saw the headlines. I think

Liam Boyce will go for it. He does. And he has taken it, near enough,

out of the ground. Not his usual type of finish. He has had a joy

young Joe Gormley. It will lift Cliftonville. It is a reminder to

Glentoran how dangerous the men in red can be. I think Jay Magee got a

little bit too tight to him. He was unfortunate not to play Stephen

a good season, Stephen Garrett. will be an interesting battle

between Stephen Garrett and Sean Ward because loads of pace between

both of them. They like to go forward. Liam Boyce always keeps his

cool. He always stays composed. That was too close to Elliot Morris. Liam

Boyce will play a big part before it is over today. They did not want to

diving because of the fear of giving a penalty away. I thought he looked

pensive. I don't think Tommy Breslin ever gets pensive. He said to me, if

we lose, I will do the interview. I think his philosophy transfers to

the players. I worked with four of the guys who played for

Cliftonville. They enjoy being part of the dressing room. He manages

players really well and he is getting the rewards. There is a

tremendous spirit in the dressing Paterson, 14 months in charge and

on. Carson can cause havoc. Very good at dead-ball situations. And

as I say it, he makes a mess of it. The commentator's curse. He will be

not like Stephen Carson. Jimmy Callacher, Jay Magee, they were

both up. Mark Clark is also a threat of from those opportunities.

want to see him play it in a wide area and get into the box. I do not

periods in big games that happen. Players start to give the ball away

cheaply. It creates a pattern. saw a shot of Tommy Breslin. He was

almost animated. Maybe he would not want to be 1-on-1, Piccadilly in

a defensive position. That is the way Eddie Patterson set his team. It

is a team on containment. He has not been adventurous. And you can

understand that because this is the team that got them through the

semi-final. Andrew Waterworth is the goalscorer. Stephen Carson is more

of a creative player. Better from Glentoran. That falls for Sean

Ward. He can hit one but it goes well wide. He has got two goals this

disappointed. He just strikes across it a little bit too much. He tried

I am with the assistant boss Peter Murray. Back to the first chance,

should it have been two goals? think so, the first was probably an

easier chance. Delighted to come in one up. Timber can, Conor Devlin

spread himself like Peter Schmeichel. He has been doing that

all season. He is an important member of the squad. We are going

in happy. Your old club Glentoran cannot seem

to get a foothold. They struggled. In the last five minutes they did a

bit better. The first half was difficult. Territory wise,

Cliftonville have dominated. Glentoran have not been able to get

Joe Gormley, 44 goals in 90 games. What a signing he has been. I had a

conversation with him before he signed. He came from Crumlin Star,

when he had scored up to 80 goals in one season. When he gets in

those positions he does not miss. It was sensational. The ball coming

out of the sky over the top of your shoulder is probably the hardest

you have to work with as a centre- forward and he dealt with it with

simplicity. The goalkeeper, he hit the first one off the goalkeeper.

He had to react. He focused on the ball and made good contact. He has

that great technique. His background is interesting. He has

that freshness about him with someone who has come from an

amateur league background. A lot of raw talent can be developed.

Cliftonville had more chances. We can see examples of that. This was

a lovely move. He goes past two or three players. He will probably be.

You can watch is clever feet. This is the cleverness of Liam Boyce. He

has done this all season. He will be disappointed he did not score.

He should score and by his standard he should score. He has the ability,

when he drops off, he does not have good pace, but he has great turning

ability. Most of the attacking player of -- of Cliftonville will

come through Liam Boyce. He has top-level technique. We saw the

Waterworth chance earlier. Apart from that, they have not really

created that much. They have been forced to shoot from a long way

away. We have been disappointed. This was the story of their first-

half performance. You put so many players into position and get

nothing. Snapping at a ball from 35 yards, nothing else on, they are

not offering penetration to shoot from that distance. This is another

one. Miles off-target. That was indicative of their play in the

first 30 minutes. They have to regroup. Eddie will say settle down,

when you get into a good position, take your time and try to hit the

target. How can Glentoran get back into the game? They did manage to

regroup just before half-time. They will have to push someone closer to

Waterworth. May be dropping Carson in behind. Using him as the third

midfield player and bring in somebody on the left-hand side.

They do not have Carson in the game. If they could have him picking up

the ball, and the pace of the ball, and the pace of

Waterworth, they might get something out of that. We can get

the view of a former player. You are in agreement. You said that

Glentoran need to regroup. Reconfigure. They started off

showing Cliftonville too much respect. They played for 213. It is

not working. -- four. Waterworth is doing too much work on the right

wing. When he was through the middle, he almost scored. You also

made the observation, it is blustery. It is your feeling that

Cliftonville have worked out the wind better than Glentoran.

Everyone knows how could a team they are. Glentoran are playing

high balls. Cliftonville play the ball at their feet. They are

knocking the ball about. They are not playing the high ball. They

need to make a change quickly. I fear that if Cliftonville get

another goal, that will be it. But Martin Murray on the bench and he is

very lively. What a player he is. I expect him to come off the bench.

They need another player alongside Andy Waterworth. If they leave holes

at the back, these two boys will exploit them all day. Whenever you

give Cliftonville space to play, they will work the opportunities. It

your point of view, you would like to see some of these players playing

full-time across the water. Yes, it would be nice to see some players

from the Irish league playing full-time. Gareth McAuley is the

only one who was gone on to play at the highest level and it would be

nice to see more of that. We need to find international players. We

either send them across at 16 or we develop them here. Hopefully more

players can use the Irish league as a platform to develop. Can you get

these guys and push them into the shop window? I speak to managers all

the time and any managers who speak to me about players like Liam Boyce

and Joe Gormley, I always say they are worth a look. Cliftonville have

done a fantastic job with them but there are always players here who

are worth a look at. It would be nice to see more lads get the

chance. Some great young talent on show across the league. Absolutely.

Liam Boyce and Joe Gormley can play at the highest level but so can a

number of others. In England, they are cutting budgets and a lot of

guys are being made redundant. So many players are out of contract

over there so they are not really looking to Northern Ireland. I think

the product here has got better over the last year or two. The players

are passing the ball better. You get one or two good young players coming

through. I think it augurs well for the future. Let's hope for an

exciting second half this afternoon. Do you fear it Cliftonville score

again, that is it for Glentoran? think so. If we are going to have a

real game, I think Glentoran need to score next. Cliftonville have the

players will score on the counter-attack which will make for a

good half. But Glentoran need to come out in the second half and lift

the intensity. The first ten minutes will be key for Glentoran. I think

they need to score in the first 20 minutes to make a cup final of this.

If they don't score and the pressure starts coming on top of them,

Clifton's bill could score two or three. -- Cliftonville. They have

got the open top bus booked for tomorrow in north Belfast but they

will know this job is not quite done yet. They felt quite fortunate to

going ahead and they will be re-emphasising that the players so

they are fully focused for the second half. Do you still fancy

Cliftonville very much? I have for a while leading up to this. I thought

Cliftonville would be too strong for Glentoran. It Cliftonville start

playing the way they can, they have got the ability to put Glentoran

not the defender they need to bring on in a second half. Although he has

scored. He is a big threat at set pieces as well so we is a player

that. When you look at their bench, the only recognised striker is

Richard Gibson. You could push Jim O'Hanlon into a wide area. I am not

better on the ball. I think we are all agreed that the next goal, as

the boys were talking about in the studio, vital. If it goes to

threat in the first half and he is such a willing runner, the workrate

he has put in for his team, they are struggling to deal with him. He will

be a big threat in this extra time. Bodies will be getting tired and he

looks like he is fresh and he can run all day. Let's hear the thoughts

of Tim McCann. You think that Cliftonville would

take penalties right now. They look dead on their feet. Maybe it is one

step too far for them. There has been a googly different attitude

from the Glentoran players. They are first to the ball, they are winning

headers, and the longer this game goes on, advantage Glentoran.

Patterson has only played one card in of subs. Jim O'Hanlon has been

magnificent. He has all the skill in the world. In extra time, when the

players are tired, if they get the ball to Jim O'Hanlon, he can turn

another thrilling half an hour of extra time in this Irish Cup final.

his second Irish Cup goal and that one could win the trophy. A great

is the sort of delivery we expect from Stephen Carson. A good

connection into the top corner. Would you believe it is nearly 99

O'Hanlon. Sean Ward will not catch that. But what a turnaround it has

been since half-time in this game. Glentoran have worked their way back

into it and they have made it pay off big time. Look at the space

know what has hit them either. look like a beacon side almost.

After this season they have endured. Players not being paid and that

sort of thing going on. That was too easy from McMullan. You can see

the disappointment in the faces of the Cliftonville players. 1-1 after

90 minutes. Jimmy Callacher and Waterworth again, they have made it

3-1-Glentoran. He is saying, keep your head. It is falling apart.

Only sadness and dejection in the faces of the Cliftonville

supporters. We have more work being done on Liam Boyce. It looks

painful. They have no more substitutions to make. That is the

reality. The referee will turn them like Glentoran have not won the

Irish Cup since 2004. They will not worry about the history. They will

worry about today. They came as underdogs, with hope in their heart.

They could not do much more than commitment of Cliftonville this

year but they looked tired outfit at the moment. They looked beaten.

It is difficult to get back into a match at this stage. Everything is

going the Glentoran. They have confidence. Cliftonville cannot dig

themselves out of this hole. Probably a long, hard season and

players are tired. It is getting away from them. And perhaps it was

written in the stars the Glentoran. They have endured so much this year.

This great club were close to going out of business. Financial problems

that have been chronicled. Players not being played on time, that sort

of thing will stop I -- think. I said to the chairman, you enjoy

your day. He said I am trying to, but I am so nervous. I know what he

meant. This will mean so much if they lift the trophy. Nothing like

you to be given their. -- likely to involved. He is obviously in pain

with that shoulder. That is all Cliftonville need at this stage,

when they are up against it. All the dreams and plan celebrations

olds. The last game for the 34- year-old. His contract is not being

renewed. His 65th Irish Cup tie, counting finals. This will be his

eighth final. He won five, he lost two. He won two as a skipper. Over

16 years a tremendous servant to Glentoran. And a tremendous

ambassador and role model for young people. Followers of local football.

He deserves every plaudit going, Colin Nixon. I am so pleased that

Eddie Patterson is giving him this last chance to acknowledge the

crowds and their applause. He has had a lot of that over the years.
