This is a Late Kick Off with a difference. We've got the bdst of | :00:00. | :00:07.
the action as always from across the leagues. Joining us is the | :00:08. | :00:09.
Portsmouth chairman Iain McHnnes, celebrating a vital win unddr a | :00:10. | :00:19.
third and a jet of the season. `` a third manager. Bristol City and | :00:20. | :00:24.
Bournemouth star Wade Elliott is here too, but we're also cldaring | :00:25. | :00:26.
the decks because we're talking tonight about the future of | :00:27. | :00:28.
grassroots football. Nation`l funding is been cut, becausd numbers | :00:29. | :00:31.
playing the game are down. We've covered our region from Cornwall | :00:32. | :00:34.
across Sussex and most placds in between, getting your concerns, and | :00:35. | :00:39.
that is this one of them? `` is this one of them? It's a yellow card | :00:40. | :00:45.
Card him! He's an animal, ghve him a yellow card. | :00:46. | :00:57.
New man at the helm with very long credentials at Portsmouth, `nd we | :00:58. | :01:10.
reveal his mantra ` smile, win. Oxford can't smile, but we can | :01:11. | :01:14.
commiserate. Have you ever seen an own goal like this one? We'll have | :01:15. | :01:17.
the best of the weekend acthon. And grassroots under the microscope | :01:18. | :01:19.
What's the future? Grassroots football is in massive dangdr of | :01:20. | :01:23.
folding within the next fivd to ten years. | :01:24. | :01:28.
Welcome to the programme. So much to pack in, welcome to Ady, to the | :01:29. | :01:34.
Portsmouth chairman Iain McHnnes. And to Wade Elliott, who is probably | :01:35. | :01:37.
wondering when we're going to show his goal from the weekend. Just give | :01:38. | :01:40.
it some time. We'll start whth Portsmouth. Under new managdment, | :01:41. | :01:45.
and trying to put the brakes on an epic fall through the leaguds, from | :01:46. | :01:48.
Premier League to the bottol end of League Two in just four years. Last | :01:49. | :01:51.
Thursday this man sacked Richie Barker, and handed the job to Andy | :01:52. | :01:54.
Awford, with just seven gamds left to keep hold of the club's league | :01:55. | :01:57.
status. His task began at Ndwport County, and we went with thd team | :01:58. | :01:59.
and more than 1,000 travellhng fans. Four years ago the Portsmouth bus | :02:00. | :02:13.
was arriving at White Hart Lane Right now, it's Rodney Parade, home | :02:14. | :02:18.
of Newport County. I've been with the club since I was a boy, eight | :02:19. | :02:22.
years old. It makes you feel bad, but no one's got a divine rhght | :02:23. | :02:26.
anywhere. We've got to get out of this, and I'm sure the people we've | :02:27. | :02:30.
got in there will do it for us. Seven cup finals. 21 points to play | :02:31. | :02:33.
for. With Pompey so close to the football league trapdoor, it's now | :02:34. | :02:36.
in Andy Awford's hands to kdep them alive. It's the biggest challenge | :02:37. | :02:42.
I'll ever face, but I wouldn't have said yes to the phone call hf I | :02:43. | :02:46.
didn't think that I could do it We need everybody together ` players, | :02:47. | :02:50.
staff, fans, the city. Everxbody. Can I see your board, because it's | :02:51. | :02:54.
the key thing it says there. If the cameraman can see that over there, | :02:55. | :02:57.
it says enjoy and smile. Yes, we have to have a smile on our faces | :02:58. | :03:00.
when we play football. People forget that, don't they? Yes, we h`ve to | :03:01. | :03:03.
work hard and obviously the enjoyment comes with working hard, | :03:04. | :03:07.
you have to enjoy working h`rd. The smile comes with the three points at | :03:08. | :03:11.
the end. Because I'm sure wd all be smiling if we get that. There were | :03:12. | :03:14.
1,200 tickets available for Pompey fans, one of the very last going to | :03:15. | :03:18.
Gary Brown. Lives in France, but on a plane the moment he got the news | :03:19. | :03:23.
that Andy Awford was taking charge. He epitomises everything about | :03:24. | :03:25.
Pompey, and everything about all the people who are going to be here this | :03:26. | :03:28.
afternoon, everybody who coles to Fratton Park every week, it's in | :03:29. | :03:31.
their blood, it's in my blood, still. Right now, a few minttes | :03:32. | :03:36.
before kick`off, are you happy with your decision to be here? Absolutely | :03:37. | :03:43.
delighted, yeah. I've got the heart of the Pompey family. When H got to | :03:44. | :03:46.
Bordeaux Airport I had no transport here. I tweeted, within two minutes | :03:47. | :03:49.
I'd been tweeted back saying yes, we'll give you a lift. What do you | :03:50. | :03:52.
think about Awford taking charge now? I'm very pleased as a Pompey | :03:53. | :03:56.
man, it's got to be an improvement. He will give his heart and soul to | :03:57. | :04:03.
Pompey. Two goals and a red card before half`time set Pompey on their | :04:04. | :04:11.
way. Goal kick... A penalty given to Portsmouth! Taylor steps up, and | :04:12. | :04:18.
slots it into the bottom corner Chapman dives into a challenge with | :04:19. | :04:21.
Danny Hollands. And Chapman has been sent off. It is a red card. Newport | :04:22. | :04:24.
are down to ten men. Header from Wallace! What a | :04:25. | :04:38.
brilliant Portsmouth goal! Ht's Newport zero, Portsmouth two, and | :04:39. | :04:41.
Andy Awford does a jig of ddlight on the touchline. Half`time ` Gary s | :04:42. | :04:44.
European dash looking a verx good bet. So far, so good. Excellent | :04:45. | :04:48.
value for money. Really good first half. Andy Awford asked and got | :04:49. | :05:00.
these fans to conjure up thd spirit generated by the late, great Alan | :05:01. | :05:02.
Ball, who engineered his own relegation escape for the club in | :05:03. | :05:05.
1998. Newport pulled one back. Pompey nervous, but it wouldn't | :05:06. | :05:10.
spoil the party. Portsmouth have beaten Newport County by two goals | :05:11. | :05:13.
to one. They'll go five points clear of the relegation zone. | :05:14. | :05:18.
I was at Bradford 16 years `go, this is a small ground, less Pompey fans | :05:19. | :05:22.
in it, but the energy and the passion rolling off those tdrraces, | :05:23. | :05:29.
just the same. Fantastic. Worth every penny, worth every hotr. I | :05:30. | :05:32.
actually didn't sleep till two o'clock this morning, I was so | :05:33. | :05:38.
excited about today. Terrifhc, Andy, really pleased. Really great result. | :05:39. | :05:47.
One word to describe Andy Awford? Pompey. He bleeds blue. That's what | :05:48. | :05:50.
Andy Awford does. He certainly does. Iain McInnes | :05:51. | :06:00.
lovely to have you in the studio with us. A relieved man, I guess, | :06:01. | :06:04.
tonight? Yeah, relieved. And reflecting really what thosd fans | :06:05. | :06:07.
felt. Because that's what I am, isn't it, really? I mean, it was a | :06:08. | :06:11.
real long time coming, it w`s vital for us. It's only the start, we ve | :06:12. | :06:14.
got a lot of the season still to play, but yeah, you could sde what | :06:15. | :06:18.
it meant to everybody, and that feeling went right the way through | :06:19. | :06:21.
the club and it's carried on through the club today. You had a bhg call | :06:22. | :06:25.
to make last week, though, did you? Richie Barker leaving. Yeah. And in | :06:26. | :06:28.
fairness, and nobody ever bdlieves it when you say it, but it really | :06:29. | :06:32.
was by mutual consent. We h`d a long conversation about a number of | :06:33. | :06:34.
things, and we did actually both agree and it wasn't just my call | :06:35. | :06:37.
obviously, that it was prob`bly better if we both made a parting of | :06:38. | :06:43.
the ways. Tough decision for you? Because that's a big appointment for | :06:44. | :06:46.
you. Yeah, we're a communitx club, and if it stands for anything, | :06:47. | :06:51.
we're... I don't like the idea that the only way you can change things | :06:52. | :06:55.
in football is by sacking pdople. I've been in business a long time, | :06:56. | :06:59.
sacked two people maybe in 30 years, and this is the second time in six | :07:00. | :07:03.
months. It's not a pleasant thing to do. So you go to Andy Awford, but | :07:04. | :07:06.
you talk to Neil Warnock as well. What were you thinking about doing | :07:07. | :07:09.
there? No, didn't talk to Ndil Warnock about the job. Neil Warnock | :07:10. | :07:13.
and I had a chat about the vacancy the first time, before we t`lked to | :07:14. | :07:16.
Richie. And so that Richie... He said he had a phone call last week. | :07:17. | :07:33.
Well, OK, let me qualify th`t. So Neil Warnock and I talked the last | :07:34. | :07:36.
time that we were looking for a manager when we appointed Rhchie, | :07:37. | :07:39.
and then I had a conversation with Neil Warnock on the phone, `bout | :07:40. | :07:43.
coming in as an overlord. Not as the manager. OK. You've appointdd Andy. | :07:44. | :07:46.
This has been an amazing kind of first year for you. We are coming up | :07:47. | :07:49.
towards an anniversary almost. What's the biggest thing yot've | :07:50. | :07:51.
learned in this time? Biggest thing I've learned? Where do I st`rt? I | :07:52. | :07:55.
mean, I think you learn how tough it is. You learn how difficult it is to | :07:56. | :07:59.
be in business, the business that is football. You come in thinkhng you | :08:00. | :08:02.
can try and change it, the `ttitude, you learn that you've reallx got to | :08:03. | :08:06.
have a lot of people around you with experience, and you realise that, | :08:07. | :08:09.
you know, to build a club from ground up both on and off the pitch | :08:10. | :08:13.
is an incredible task. You've had to part with two managers. Havd you | :08:14. | :08:16.
bust the budget as a result? No we haven't. Financially off thd pitch, | :08:17. | :08:19.
and generally off the pitch, we ve overperformed. On the pitch we've | :08:20. | :08:22.
underperformed. One last line, a lot of Pompey fans talking about this | :08:23. | :08:25.
million quid if Liverpool whn the league through Ken Johnson. `` | :08:26. | :08:32.
What's the line on that then? Glen Johnson. We have a Liverpudlian and | :08:33. | :08:38.
an ever Tony and on the board, and I am waiting for that day to come | :08:39. | :08:39.
through. Don't forget to keep in touch | :08:40. | :08:58.
through social media. That's a yellow card, ref! Card him! Yellow | :08:59. | :09:01.
card him! Behaviour like thhs, is grassroots football at a crossroads? | :09:02. | :09:04.
The stats say it could be. @ proper debate coming up later. | :09:05. | :09:07.
It is not just Portsmouth in a relegation scrap, let's see how the | :09:08. | :09:10.
other teams around Iain 's club fared. Don't be too cruel about that | :09:11. | :09:17.
Oxford own goal we're going to see. Immediate success for new Rovers | :09:18. | :09:20.
boss Darrell Clarke after t`king over from John Ward. The winner in | :09:21. | :09:25.
stoppage time, a huge three points for Rovers. Cheltenham haltdd a poor | :09:26. | :09:31.
run with victory at Hartlepool. Jermaine McGlashan the scordr, three | :09:32. | :09:34.
points deserved according to Mark Yates. Terrific draw for Wycombe at | :09:35. | :09:38.
title chasing Scunthorpe. This could be a huge point come the end of the | :09:39. | :09:41.
season. Sadly, Torquay look doomed, not helped by defending likd this. | :09:42. | :09:48.
Seven defenders in the area and still they fail to clear. Three | :09:49. | :09:51.
successive defeats, rock bottom of League Two. Only one win in nine for | :09:52. | :09:58.
Oxford. An unfortunate own goal look at this. Dear me. I am telling | :09:59. | :10:05.
you, that will never happen in his career again. Exeter's defenders may | :10:06. | :10:09.
face a few questions after this goal saw them lose at home to Accrington. | :10:10. | :10:13.
How many red and white shirts do you need to deal with the ball? One | :10:14. | :10:16.
two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight outfield players plus the | :10:17. | :10:22.
goalkeeper. Woeful defending. League Two not a happy place for otr teams | :10:23. | :10:27.
right now. Plymouth did not have a gamd this | :10:28. | :10:31.
weekend so Cheltenham were the top half successes, their 11th. From the | :10:32. | :10:34.
bottom up no relief for Torpuay Wycombe down to the last safe | :10:35. | :10:36.
position, it looks better rdading for the Portsmouth chairman, Iain | :10:37. | :10:39.
McInnes, your club is five points off the relegation zone now. Just | :10:40. | :10:44.
another two points to two more of our sides, Bristol Rovers and | :10:45. | :10:50.
Exeter. Guys, the own goal `t Oxford, did you ever see anxthing | :10:51. | :10:54.
like this? Extraordinary. No, bit of a sickener for the lad, not much he | :10:55. | :11:01.
can do about it, but... It goes in. Gary Waddock said that he dhdn't | :11:02. | :11:04.
want to change too much, but they've lost two matches now. Does he change | :11:05. | :11:08.
things? For me, I know he s`id he wanted to keep it as it was, but for | :11:09. | :11:12.
me, you've got to go in and be your own man. It's unusual to take over a | :11:13. | :11:16.
club that's flying as they were but I still think you've got to go in | :11:17. | :11:20.
and put your principles across. OK, super stuff, and well done, Darrell | :11:21. | :11:22.
Clarke, Bristol Rovers winnhng their first game with him in charge after | :11:23. | :11:26.
John Ward went upstairs last week. In League One, Bristol City's season | :11:27. | :11:29.
kick`started as we came on `ir, really. They were unbeaten hn six | :11:30. | :11:31.
before this weekend's defeat at Rotherham. As we have Wade with us, | :11:32. | :11:35.
we can look back on this ond. How much has the mood changed in the | :11:36. | :11:39.
last few weeks? You were be`ten here at the weekend, some cracking goals | :11:40. | :11:42.
as well. Things getting better, though? It's been great ever since I | :11:43. | :11:46.
went in. And since that went in Yeah, I'm glad you're showing | :11:47. | :11:49.
that(!) No, since I turned tp at the club everything's been first class. | :11:50. | :11:56.
It's a good bunch of lads, the facilities are great, the m`nager's | :11:57. | :11:58.
good, so for whatever reason they were struggling a little bit but | :11:59. | :12:01.
thankfully we seem to have turned that around in the last six or seven | :12:02. | :12:03.
weeks. were struggling a little bit but | :12:04. | :12:06.
thankfully we Absolutely. The goals were very good in that game. And as | :12:07. | :12:11.
we have got you in, we will have one more look because I want to you to | :12:12. | :12:15.
talk us through for us, those of us who can do this, what are you | :12:16. | :12:16.
thinking? we have got you in, we will have one | :12:17. | :12:17.
more look because I All the time shoot? No, I'm thinking I'm getting | :12:18. | :12:21.
tired, I am a good age now, so when I am getting to the end of the box I | :12:22. | :12:26.
am thinking get rid of the ball I'm thinking it's a better own goal than | :12:27. | :12:29.
the first one we saw. Yeah, it's not bad, is it? To be fair, he's scored | :12:30. | :12:33.
a few of those during his c`reer. He's been very humble about it. | :12:34. | :12:36.
Fantastic strike with a bit of swazz on it as well. Seen a few of them. | :12:37. | :12:40.
Steve Cotterill as well, yot have been managed by him a coupld of | :12:41. | :12:42.
times now. bad, is it? To be fair, he's scored | :12:43. | :12:43.
a few of those during his What does he bring to the table? I thhnk | :12:44. | :12:46.
anybody who has come across the gaffer, he is very thorough, he is | :12:47. | :12:49.
disciplined, he is a good m`n manager. Shy, retiring(!) Hd is not | :12:50. | :12:53.
shy and retiring, he had me in the hotel last week... You were staying | :12:54. | :12:56.
in the same hotel, weren't xou? We've staying in the same hotel he | :12:57. | :12:59.
had me in the lobby for 15 linutes walking me through corners. He is | :13:00. | :13:02.
certainly not shy and retirhng. But to be fair to him in the last, he is | :13:03. | :13:06.
slowly getting his principlds across and his feeling through, and | :13:07. | :13:09.
hopefully that is showing in performances and results. Hd has | :13:10. | :13:11.
proved the right man so far, certainly. There is no biggdr prize | :13:12. | :13:14.
in football than promotion from the Championship, so Reading and | :13:15. | :13:17.
Brighton, what on earth is going on? More points dropped this wedkend, | :13:18. | :13:20.
and suddenly there is a teal really steaming through the pack. | :13:21. | :13:24.
Bournemouth recorded their sixth win in March with this victory `t | :13:25. | :13:28.
Birmingham. Matt Ritchie's body shape is vital. He steadied himself, | :13:29. | :13:31.
and passes it into the net. A fantastic month for the Cherries, | :13:32. | :13:34.
and a brilliant season for Lewis Grabban, this his 18th of the | :13:35. | :13:39.
campaign. Number 19 soon cale along from the penalty spot. Pace and | :13:40. | :13:44.
power again from Grabban. C`n Bournemouth keep hold of hil in the | :13:45. | :13:49.
summer? You can never have too many goal`scorers at your football club. | :13:50. | :13:53.
Everyone knows in football `bout Ian Harte's left foot. He got hhs first | :13:54. | :13:58.
goal for the Cherries with their fourth at St Andrews. I know Hartey, | :13:59. | :14:02.
he's basically saying "My ldft foot is on fire!" Reading remain in the | :14:03. | :14:05.
play`off places, but it is now six home games without a win. Morrison | :14:06. | :14:11.
gets his timing all wrong. Larky Wells, he runs away from Pe`rce | :14:12. | :14:13.
decent finish, Lifeline just moments after, though. Soft penalty to | :14:14. | :14:18.
concede. The big Russian, P`vel Pogrebnyak, with his 11th of the | :14:19. | :14:23.
season, slots it home nicelx. Next up, an away fixture thankfully. Four | :14:24. | :14:27.
wins in their last five on their travels. Three consecutive defeats | :14:28. | :14:31.
for Brighton who were booed off at the end. We highlighted last week | :14:32. | :14:35.
Brighton's poor defending. H'm afraid much of the same this week, | :14:36. | :14:39.
Tony. Brighton spurned the chance to equalise. Leo Ulloa has onlx one | :14:40. | :14:43.
goal in five, but boy did hd blow his chance from the spot! Absolute | :14:44. | :14:49.
shocker, howler, woeful. Wh`tever you want to college, you have got to | :14:50. | :14:52.
hit the target. Make the go`lkeeper make a save. Again questions over | :14:53. | :15:03.
the defending. Definitely onside here. Three games now withott | :15:04. | :15:05.
scoring as well for Brighton. Huge improvement if they are to lake the | :15:06. | :15:09.
top six. Defeat was a massive blow for Yeovil's chances of staxing in | :15:10. | :15:12.
the Championship. Not helped by some awful defending for two of | :15:13. | :15:15.
Barnsley's four goals. A soft opener to give away in a massive g`me. | :15:16. | :15:18.
Barnsley down there in the dogfight with them. Yeovil did give | :15:19. | :15:20.
themselves hope, Luke Ayling making it 2`1. I think the assistant | :15:21. | :15:24.
referee just about got this one spot on, with the defender charghng up, | :15:25. | :15:26.
appealing for offside, terrhble decision, and again another soft | :15:27. | :15:35.
goal to give away. I really do fear for Yeovil survival. | :15:36. | :15:38.
Reading still sixth despite that desperate home run. Brighton's | :15:39. | :15:41.
losing run sends them furthdr down the pack, so it is "look out for | :15:42. | :15:44.
Bournemouth" now five points off the top six. At the bottom, Garx Johnson | :15:45. | :15:48.
looking downcast after a big loss against fellow strugglers B`rnsley. | :15:49. | :15:53.
Wade, Eddie Howe and Bournelouth Bournemouth. It just works. Why I | :15:54. | :15:57.
think, firstly, because Eddhe knows the club inside out. I think he has | :15:58. | :16:02.
got ground with the support there, I think the fans love him, I think | :16:03. | :16:06.
everybody at the club loves him and it does seem to work. Since he has | :16:07. | :16:12.
gone back, he has had a rem`rkable upturn in their performances. Can | :16:13. | :16:18.
they get top six? I don't think they will make the top six, but hf they | :16:19. | :16:22.
did, I wouldn't like to be the team that plays them, because if they do, | :16:23. | :16:26.
they will be going into it with some form. Absolutely, there is `lways | :16:27. | :16:30.
one that comes from the pack. Reading, could have lost ag`in. You | :16:31. | :16:33.
were there. The goalkeeper had a blinder. He did indeed. Four decent | :16:34. | :16:37.
saves, that was world`class. He needed all of his six foot four inch | :16:38. | :16:41.
frame to tip that over the bar. For me, McCarthy is the real de`l. He is | :16:42. | :16:44.
the real McCoy. Outside chance of maybe being on the plane with Roy | :16:45. | :16:47.
Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup in the summer. He is doing | :16:48. | :16:51.
well. Reading, still a lot of confusion, somebody said to me at | :16:52. | :16:55.
the weekend it is a mess behind the scenes. A difficult time for them. | :16:56. | :16:59.
We hope they can get it sorted out. City hopefully still on the up as | :17:00. | :17:02.
well, Bristol City, Bournemouth soaring up their league, and here is | :17:03. | :17:05.
another one to talk about tonight, Swindon Town. | :17:06. | :17:10.
Everyone that dismissed Swindon s play`off hopes, they are back on. | :17:11. | :17:15.
Miles Storey with the opener for my old club. Cancelled out herd. Four | :17:16. | :17:19.
Swindon defenders drawn tow`rds the ball. The Robins took maximtm points | :17:20. | :17:23.
with a late winner. Louis Thompson with the shot, and all your thinking | :17:24. | :17:29.
is please, go on, get over the line. Massive relief, and what a reaction | :17:30. | :17:32.
to a third successive win. Big moment for him. Three straight | :17:33. | :17:36.
defeats for Crawley has seen them slip down the table, although they | :17:37. | :17:40.
do have games in hand on those around them. They should be safe. | :17:41. | :17:46.
Swindon have burst back into the play`off race, and although | :17:47. | :17:48.
Peterborough have games in hand Mark Cooper's men are in thd race | :17:49. | :17:50.
now. Swindon have burst back into the | :17:51. | :17:51.
play`off race, At the bottol, Crawley have a six`point le`d over | :17:52. | :17:56.
the bottom four. Swindon, hd played a couple of weeks ago, can they | :17:57. | :18:02.
creeping? I think Peterborotgh will get in there, I think they will be | :18:03. | :18:05.
the sixth team. Ironically, ever since their manager told us they | :18:06. | :18:08.
have got no chance, they have been flying. So if he keeps pullhng | :18:09. | :18:11.
tricks like that out, they light have half a chance. It is the no | :18:12. | :18:15.
pressure feel, isn't it? Thd Jose Mourinho factor. They are going out | :18:16. | :18:18.
and enjoying themselves, it is working for them. Write thel off and | :18:19. | :18:22.
they might prove you wrong. Time now to clear the decks. Grassroots | :18:23. | :18:25.
football is the social side of the game, from the youngest of the | :18:26. | :18:29.
veterans. That is what we are talking about, because Sport England | :18:30. | :18:32.
have cut their FA funding bx ?1 6 million. Why? Because participation | :18:33. | :18:38.
figures are down 100,000 in a year. We will hear your concerns from | :18:39. | :18:40.
Cornwall to Sussex, Bristol to Berkshire, where we have a dad | :18:41. | :18:43.
joining us, one of so many volunteers who make grassroots | :18:44. | :18:48.
football work every weekend. And our panel in the studio are going to | :18:49. | :18:51.
have their say as well. First up, here are the causes for concern | :18:52. | :18:59.
Despite this colourful weekdnd scene played out across the region, | :19:00. | :19:01.
football is no longer the top participation sport in this country. | :19:02. | :19:06.
More people prefer to run, swim or cycle. Leading a national c`mpaign | :19:07. | :19:11.
to fire up a soccer SOS is Kenny Saunders. Football is in massive | :19:12. | :19:16.
danger of folding within thd next five or ten years. There is a | :19:17. | :19:21.
massive big problem out there. Right from funding to grassroots coaching | :19:22. | :19:23.
to parents, respect campaigns, there are many issues out there at the | :19:24. | :19:30.
moment. We have got to get the Premier League, the Football League, | :19:31. | :19:32.
the government, councils, everybody who is responsible for grassroots | :19:33. | :19:35.
football and can improve gr`ssroots football, we need them around the | :19:36. | :19:41.
table, and we need them now. Money is at the root. And the further from | :19:42. | :19:45.
the heart of football, the harder it is and the more help you nedd. Take | :19:46. | :19:50.
Cornwall. Grassroots football needs to be pushed even more. | :19:51. | :19:53.
Unfortunately I know the FA got cut this week, but grassroots football | :19:54. | :19:58.
is where it lies. And espechally in Cornwall, we are too far aw`y from | :19:59. | :20:01.
anywhere to be able to naturally go to Plymouth Argyle or Exeter City. | :20:02. | :20:07.
The FA say their strategy is in place now, the funding is coming. | :20:08. | :20:11.
The Football Association since 008 until the end of our nation`l game | :20:12. | :20:15.
strategy in 2015 will have hnvested some ?400 million into grassroots | :20:16. | :20:17.
football, plus money into the foundation, and working with our | :20:18. | :20:20.
partners at the Premier League, the Football League, and the Football | :20:21. | :20:22.
Foundation, and indeed Sport England and DCMS, we are committed to | :20:23. | :20:25.
investing funding into grassroots football. More than anything we are | :20:26. | :20:33.
committed to working with local authorities at times when there are | :20:34. | :20:36.
now incredibly intensive cuts to local authority budgets. And I think | :20:37. | :20:42.
the model going forward of how local authorities and pitches are utilised | :20:43. | :20:45.
will be very different going forward, and we are committdd to | :20:46. | :20:48.
working with them to find that new model. | :20:49. | :20:51.
So people are trying to say the right things about trying to sort | :20:52. | :20:54.
this out. You are a professhonal football league club chairm`n, there | :20:55. | :20:58.
is loads of money, isn't thdre? Have you not got to do more? I don't | :20:59. | :21:02.
recognise the problem in our area, quite frankly. Portsmouth, we have | :21:03. | :21:05.
got a community operation, we will deal with in excess of a qu`rter of | :21:06. | :21:09.
a million kids who want to play football. I have personally got | :21:10. | :21:16.
contacts at a couple of loc`l football clubs, 56 teams on a Sunday | :21:17. | :21:19.
league side, and all of thel have got good coaching and facilhties. We | :21:20. | :21:27.
have to look at the problem, perhaps, from a slightly different | :21:28. | :21:30.
angle, one wonders whether people would rather play football on | :21:31. | :21:32.
computers rather than on thd pictures? That is my perspective. | :21:33. | :21:40.
Maybe. On to our next subject, grassroots. The facilities `nd the | :21:41. | :21:43.
pictures are big issue, of course, as we talk about this. Take a look | :21:44. | :21:48.
at this. This has been a freak a few months, | :21:49. | :21:52.
so when the floods came, football really did get its winter break | :21:53. | :21:54.
Lock`up garages and containdrs have to do in some places. Nationally, | :21:55. | :21:59.
say the FA, there are 30,000 grass pitches. 80% local council run. | :22:00. | :22:04.
Recreational football relies heavily on these. Budgets are tight. They | :22:05. | :22:10.
are becoming harder to maintain so this is an important altern`tive. | :22:11. | :22:17.
3G. The heritage of our gamd is 11 aside football, we will protect that | :22:18. | :22:20.
to our dying day, but also to listen to the understanding of what other | :22:21. | :22:24.
types of football we need to play, whether it be seven aside, five | :22:25. | :22:27.
aside, and give them that offer of football which is right, will fit | :22:28. | :22:30.
into their very busy social lives. And can you get the grants? This | :22:31. | :22:34.
team play at Sussex. They nded floodlights and a small stand to be | :22:35. | :22:38.
allowed into the leagues above. But... We have got to find `nother | :22:39. | :22:44.
100,000, so we can progress into the next league. But we cannot do that | :22:45. | :22:49.
because we can't get the funding until we are actually in th`t | :22:50. | :22:54.
division. But you have got to have these things in place beford you can | :22:55. | :22:57.
get in that division. 3G and grass, the mixed economy the | :22:58. | :23:04.
FA talks about. I know what I would sooner play on. Let's ask W`de, who | :23:05. | :23:07.
is still a professional football, a poor grass pitch or a decent 3G | :23:08. | :23:11.
surface? Grass, always grass. I can see the logic of 3G, but I would | :23:12. | :23:19.
always prefer a grass pitch. But as a nation, we all grew up kicking | :23:20. | :23:22.
balls on muddy pitches, and that might be the root of why we are | :23:23. | :23:26.
wrong ball nation. Maybe thhs will educate everyone? Maybe, I `gree | :23:27. | :23:39.
with Wade. Sport England figures, 16 plus 11 aside players who wdre | :23:40. | :23:44.
playing four times a month. There are lots of people playing five | :23:45. | :23:46.
aside football. The next topic is coaching. | :23:47. | :23:50.
There are five levels of co`ching, from beginning up to the licence | :23:51. | :23:54.
required to go to the Premidr League. There are just over 100 in | :23:55. | :23:59.
this country. In Spain, there are 12,000. Outside of professional | :24:00. | :24:06.
clubs, a licensed coaches are scarce. Among a handful in Hampshire | :24:07. | :24:12.
is this man. You have got to coach to each individual child yot work. | :24:13. | :24:18.
You have got to work as indhviduals, it is not just a team. This aids | :24:19. | :24:25.
children in their development. These guys started just like thesd lads, | :24:26. | :24:30.
when they were seven years old. The coach and club founder says coaches | :24:31. | :24:33.
are fundamental to keeping this enthusiasm. But it costs. If they | :24:34. | :24:42.
want a Level to it will cost them an awful lot. Very difficult. H firmly | :24:43. | :24:49.
believe that this is what is stopping a lot of the good coaching | :24:50. | :24:53.
in England. Let's bring in Robin Gibson, he is | :24:54. | :24:58.
taking his level to final example is weekend. Thank you for joinhng us. | :24:59. | :25:03.
Why did you want to do it? Because I have been coaching my lad shnce he | :25:04. | :25:08.
was under five, and his matds, and we know that better coaches produce | :25:09. | :25:11.
better footballers. I want to be a better coach. The issues it raises, | :25:12. | :25:20.
how much is it cost you? It costs over ?300, luckily I managed to get | :25:21. | :25:23.
funding for that. You have to buy coaching manuals, whiteboards, bibs, | :25:24. | :25:30.
cones, balls etc. It is an dye opening experience. It is about 100 | :25:31. | :25:35.
plus hours to do. You have to take six days off work, and then there | :25:36. | :25:40.
are a few more weekend days, then you have to go back to your own club | :25:41. | :25:44.
and coach those guys as well, to make the time up. What would you | :25:45. | :25:50.
change about it? There is a big gap between level one and level two Mac. | :25:51. | :25:56.
They need to close that gap. Thank you very much for joining us. The FA | :25:57. | :26:00.
told us, if we are to improve standards of coaching in England, it | :26:01. | :26:03.
is important people recognise what the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson has | :26:04. | :26:06.
said, and that there are no short cuts to quality coaching. L`st but | :26:07. | :26:11.
not least, behaviour. The F@ are tackling this with a code of | :26:12. | :26:14.
conduct, and a very direct video campaign. Yellow cards, ref. He is | :26:15. | :26:25.
an animal. The threat of eager parents and threatening beh`viour is | :26:26. | :26:28.
known to be making referee recruitment a tough sell. What goes | :26:29. | :26:31.
on in a grassroots game, especially among adults, can be challenging. | :26:32. | :26:42.
Some of the teams we play against, use football as a release from work. | :26:43. | :26:49.
Ref, did you see that? Why would I see that? How did you do th`t? | :26:50. | :26:58.
Behaviour. I have an anecdote. I was playing Sunday morning football a | :26:59. | :27:01.
few years ago, we had a lot of bad tackles, it finished eight `gainst | :27:02. | :27:04.
eight, in the dressing room afterwards, they were banging on the | :27:05. | :27:09.
dressing room window. I don't play Sunday morning football any more. We | :27:10. | :27:12.
have got to culturally train change that, haven't we? Absolutelx, but | :27:13. | :27:18.
you problems started at. We have got to change it. We have got to play | :27:19. | :27:21.
with a smile, enjoy playing football. The responsibilitx of you | :27:22. | :27:26.
guys as well, as profession`l players? There is an element of | :27:27. | :27:32.
that. We get blamed for most stuff. We will take a bit of | :27:33. | :27:37.
responsibility. Ray Winston looked a bit like me and the directors box. | :27:38. | :27:41.
Without the guys that go out and officiate on a Sunday morning, we do | :27:42. | :27:45.
not have a football game. There is a little bit of playacting th`t goes | :27:46. | :27:51.
on with parents. OK, trying to change it. Thank you very mtch guys. | :27:52. | :27:57.
Thank you to our guests, and a lot of debate about our national game. | :27:58. | :28:01.
You can continue it on soci`l media. But it is not all Doom And Gloom. We | :28:02. | :28:05.
leave you with the brighter images we have been filming across the | :28:06. | :28:08.
region over the last few wedks. We will see you next Monday, s`me time, | :28:09. | :28:15.
same place. Have a good week. I like football because you can do | :28:16. | :28:20.
headers and penalties. What you think about football, one word to | :28:21. | :28:28.
describe it? Cool. Epic. Awdsome. Fun. Very often, and it is puite | :28:29. | :28:36.
good because we always get to do lots of fun things at the end. It is | :28:37. | :28:40.
awesome. | :28:41. | :28:45. |
