Can the Millers new manager won over his doubters? Of Leeds fans at

the Pigeon Detectives take on head- to-head.

With me tonight. The current Huddersfield and former Leeds

United manager, Simon Grayson. And a man we know well from Bradford

and Sheffield United, now the Motherwell manager, Stuart McCall.

It's been coming, and on Saturday Doncaster's relegation from the

Championship was confirmed. For most of the season, the club have

tried a radical strategy of bringing in foreign loan players,

such as El-Hadji Diouf and Freddie Piquionne. So does going down mean

the Willie McKay experiment has failed? Paul Barnes reports.

They refereed's final whistle on Saturday signal the end of

Doncaster Rovers's four-year stay in the championship and all but

included one of the more turbulent campaigns in the club's recent

history. Chairman John Ryan sacked Shaun Briscoe as manager and

replace them with Dean Saunders. Not long after the embarked on a

unique transfer experiment with the agent Willie McKay bringing a host

of foreign players into the club on short-term contracts. Much

anticipation at the time but the move has failed with Doncaster

destined for Rock -- League 1. Now that their season is effectively

over, how do supporters look back at the neat as first tragedy?

have to give them credit for trying something a bit different. It has

not been working for a while. I was a cynic from the start but a better

shot. El-Hadji Diouf and others - they just came for a ride. I am

just disappointed it has not worked. It was worth a try. I know Willie

McKay has a bad name but so what? He worked hard for the club. At the

end of the day, they have tried it. It may not have worked but they

have to try it. El-Hadji Diouf especially, what a star. I was not

personally happy with the idea but that is how the club has had to try

to cope. I think it has been hard to

integrate a lot of the foreign players into the set up. They have

been so used to a certain regime and a certain way of working. To

change that dynamic, it has taken a lot of adjustment and the results

speak for themselves. With opinion divided amongst the

support, I pitied too early Mackay that the experiment has not had the

desired effect. The club have been relegated from the League, so in

many respects that will be seen as Ophelia. Where do you think it has

gone wrong for the club this season? For something to go wrong,

it had to be righted some time. When I arrived, there was not a lot

right with the clock. John thought something had to be done and called

me and asked me to help. Nobody has tried harder than myself. I love

going to the way games and his supporters were brilliant. The

overall be up -- over opinion was thanks to try to help with

different things but we have been relegated and nobody is more upset

than myself. Most people think I parachuted in from somewhere else

and there is a lot of negative publicity for football agents and I

do not -- cannot do anything about that. Eilis 50 minutes away from

the stadium and my children are in the academy. I have loved being a

part of Doncaster Rovers and nobody is more sorry than myself.

chairman has admitted it was a last throw of the dice but a risk worth

taking. Dean Saunders had a rotten hand but when we felt he could not

bring the players in, and he brought some great players in -

players for free and for no money. Players like El-Hadji Diouf who

scored six to seven goals. At least we give it a go. We tried a quick

fix because we were in trouble. We got one point from seven games and

one from 20 games. We tried to inject some life into the team and

only three weeks ago what was going great. Ultimately, at the ball

transferred experiment did not quite make the cut and defeat at

home to Portsmouth consigns them to League 1 football next season. You

cannot blame them for a lack of imagination. As for which players

will be playing here next season, that is anyone's guess.

That's the first problem of the close season. There are almost

starting from scratch now. There will be a lot of players leaving?

That can be of benefit that you want a fresh start. The sun does

what his own players and pulls up if the experiment worked, people

think it was a great way to run a business. It was difficult for don

caster because they had to stay in the championship. Everyone is

disappointed it has not work but they will have their own ideas now.

The chairman has come out and say it they will not be trying it again

another division down. What are your feelings on it? I am surprised

so many supporters were happy with it. They got to the stage where

they had to try something, they did not won 20 games and a role. If

you're at Doncaster player and you have been there for years, and you

get a lot of foreign players coming in and you know they will only be

there for a short period, do they have the same team spirit? Probably

not. You are familiar with own signings from Leeds. Managing them

brings its own problems? Ideally, everyone wants a permanent signing

from day one but it is not always feasible. As Stuart McCall

mentioned, these players come in and unsettle the changing rooms.

They may have different attitudes or whatever. It is not easy to do

that. It was something I have tried to do but is unfortunately not

season in the championship beckons. Also won the championship next term

will be Leeds United. On Saturday, they fell behind to Peterborough.

The second half was much more comfortable. Another goalkeeping

blunder let in a school full stop at the Scotsman's second put Leeds

they're getting it wrong at the moment. I do feel for them but

there are more and more mistakes. Leeds United, first home win under

Neil Warnock. You New Delhi Peyton would get goals eventually. He is a

great lad and they brought him to the club to get goals because he

got them first London. He had a few injuries early on and has forced

his way and again full stop he has been given the opportunity at the

weekend. He is a good goalscorer and it may just have been the UN

and the confidence he needs to get a few more goals before the end of

the season. We will speaks in about that but as to Leeds United, where

two and a half months and she left the club. What are your thoughts?

It is part and parcel of football that you get sacked and move on. I

was disappointed at the time because we do three points of the

play-offs. A few things if I have come out since I have left the club

I was not too pleased about because I have kept my silence and dignity.

It is a fantastic football club and they will never regret taking that

decision. We have left the club and a far better state than when we

walked in. There has been a bit of flak in your direction. Looking

back, would you have done some things differently? Every manager

would do things differently if given things -- given the

opportunity. We finished 7th the previous year and just missed out

on the play-offs. That summer came along and he wanted to invest in

players to take us to the next level but we did not manage to do

that. Results dictate what happened and that is part and parcel of

football, you move on. I know you have to be careful with what you

say, but would you have liked to have a bit more money? Every

manager would. When you get a certain position, you would like to

think you can help move the club to the next level. Southampton and

Reading will probably go up and be spared money over the summer. These

were players we looked to sign over the summer but they went elsewhere.

There is a big expectancy at Leeds and sometimes the expectancy levels

are not matched elsewhere. Money, I tell you, that of all evil.

The rivalry cutting a city in two. Two detectives go head-to-head.

Right, straight back to the action. Huddersfield may be out of the race

for second place, but the cut throat rivalry in the Steel City

continues. Here's Neil Morrow with what appears to be a decisive twist.

The Isles wet behind early on. Wednesday levelled the game after

the break. They pressed for an equaliser but it never came. Dave

Jones is still unbeaten and it is looking like play-off for the Owls.

Huddersfield's hopes of a top to finish ended over the Easter period.

The game's only goal from Chris Robertson at the difference between

the sides. Chesterfield almost certainly be

relegated but the second one on the bounce means the fat lady has yet

to sing. Hartlepool went ahead in the first half but Danny Whitaker

levelled the game. Recovery was complete with this header to keep

Chesterfield's than survival hopes alive for another week.

Scunthorpe moved clear of them drop zone but they were well beaten by

MK Dons. Goals up in the first half their. Two more wins will do it.

Down ended depths, Scunthorpe could finish in the top half and

Chesterfield will not go down without a fight. But even a win

against Rochdale next Saturday may Stuart, Sheffield United are flying.

And I am delighted for them. It is a tremendous club. They have a

couple of tricky games to go. But they have won six games on the

bounce and have been absolutely magic. If they could just get to

the finishing line, which I am sure they will.

We will finish off Sheffield United's goals but Chesterfield

have won two in a row. However even if they win the next three it is

still unlikely they will stay up. It is too little, too late. They

have performed OK but just not got the results. When you down at the

bottom that is the way things tend to go against you. If they go down

they will hope to bounce back up. Huddersfield are not flying but,

primed for a real push? We are trying to create a false

sense of security for everybody else! The bet is working!

We're just making bad mistakes. In the first half we played very well

and should have been out of sight but they got the goal then we went

to sleep a little bit. We just want to make sure the get to the play-

offs this weekend and then after that we hope everybody can get

focused on what they need to do. Anything can happen. Doesn't matter

where you finish, after, 4th, 5th, six, will be one team goes up. --

Simon, you are a fan? Yes, they are big Leeds fans and I

have got to know them well over the last few years.

He admits he is not the special one but he is certainly a controversial

one. Stephen Evans took over at Rotherham United last week. He

knows that his reputation goes before him. Does his appointment

mean that the club has an you mean He admitted conspiracy to defraud

the Inland Revenue of more than �320,000. But who is the real Steve

Evans? Most importantly he is the new Rotherham United manager after

the chairman has signed a sizable check to prise the Scotsman from

League Two rivals, Crawley Town. His record cannot be questioned but

his appointment was far from an easy option. If that is because he

comes with a chequered history of touchline bans and bus stops and a

conviction for tax fraud. But the man the chair man describes as the

man of the moment is tipped to win over the more sceptical members of

the support. I have taken on board the

accusations made against him in the past but it is many years ago and

by unsatisfied now. He has been with Crawley Town for four hears.

He is a guide that can give us what we haven't had in the past. I feel

very confident about that. In September time when we're up there

at the top of the lead I am sure some of the supporters will change

their mind and think, this guy knows what we are all about.

The chairman told me that he knew I had made a mistake around a decade

ago and paid the price. And it is only right that the supporters have

a? Against it. But that number of correspondences to Crawley Town

when I left was a testament to the 25 months of incredible success.

He has been handed a larger budget than at his previous club.

The ambition of the chair man, the new stadium, the fan base, the

potential fan-base, and as I said to the press, the club is going

places. There are fantastic facilities that would grace any

division in the country and it will be full of Rotherham United fans.

All of that, and it is a tremendous opportunity we have been given. It

is even better when you don't apply! It is nice when the chair

man phones your club and is willing to pay a sum of money for you as a

manager. Not too many managers move for money these days.

Their next game is against promotion chasing Shrewsbury. He

has made a typically honest assessment of the clock's season to

date. As the squad under-achieve Yes, I think they have under-

achieved. Not all of them, there have been some big performances

from a number of the players but our job in the next month is to

assess whether the under-achievers can achieve. If they can, we will

take in four with us during what Rotherham got off to a perfect

start after just three minutes when they were headed in front. It was a

lead that looked to have lasted until the break. But on the stroke

of half-time the leveller was scored. And just three minutes

after the restart the hosts went in front. Rotherham pressed for an

equaliser. But Shrewsbury confirmed their rise with this second goal

for Cornell. Lingering hopes of the play-offs are probably over.

We showed character and we did not buckle. We missed a number of

chances, whereas they didn't. But there is a lot to build on. Lots to

get excited about. But we can talk about that come the end of the

season. He has a large job on his hands at

Rotherham but you get the feeling he is going to enjoy it and the

rest of the leak might not. He is certainly a character. But

this appointment caught me on the hop. Where you surprise?

I was. He had done such a good job at Crawley Town. They were facing

promotion. Something obviously enticed him to go to Rotherham. A

new stadium, the chairman giving him money. So watch out for them

next year, he would not have taken the job if he did not think he

could take them up. Interesting to say that he did not

apply. That does not happen often in football. He has never really

been given much credit throughout the game.

But obviously the chair man saw something in him. I only faced him

once with Sheffield United. The passion from both he and Neil warm-

up was incredible. When you look at some of the big names that applied,

for him to get it without applying is incredible. Obviously the

chairman sees something in him. As Simon said, look out for them next

season. They are a double act on the

touchline. What happens to you guys? Use are all very nice but

when you get on the touchline U- turn into raving lunatics.

You can really do much about it. It is because you're passionate and

due care about it. If it is me against Stuart I want to beat him,

and vice versa, isn't it? Brad ford also had a win at

Northampton. That should do it for them, shouldn't it?

Yes, but with the standard of player they have had this season

they have under-achieved, no doubt about it. But with the James Hanson

up front, if he stays, then they can go on to do good things. But it

has been a disappointing campaign. No doubt. Thankfully now they have

enough points to began focusing on the next season and hopefully

improve on what has been a performance they would not like,

performance they would not like, that is for sure.

A quick look at the table. I would not rule Rotherham out just yet.

But look at what a win against Shrewsbury would have done for them.

No, I am pleased with who I already have. They have done exceedingly

well. While looking forward to seeing them at Bradford next season

and good luck to them. A quick worked on Motherwell, what

are your thoughts on the season? Clinching third would be a great

achievement and with Rangers' problems would give us a Champions

League place. But still lots of work to be done.

Fingers crossed that Motherwell do the job for Stuart. A little bit of
