Episode 8 Late Kick Off Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

12 games left of the season for Dave Jones to keep his job. That is

the way it has been on late kick- off. Out with the old and in with

the new but does changing the boss really work? Are if you do not like

something, you get rid of it. Goalkeeper's union, a session with

Barnsley's guardian of the goal. We will have the best of the action

from the weekend. Good evening. Appropriately, in a week when we're

talking - again - about managers getting the sack, I've two guests

who've been down that road themselves, Phil Brown and Brian

Laws. And there is much to talk about.

Can you think of a more insecure job than being the manager of a

high profile football club? This week, it was Sheffield Wednesday's

Gary Megson's turn to get the tin tack, becoming the third manager of

one of our clubs considered to be doing pretty well, to be sacked

inside the last month. So what is behind it all? Paul Barnes has been

investigating. What a difference a week can making

the bizarre world of football? Just eight days ago Sheffield Wednesday

recorded the sweetest of all victories over bend nearest of

rivals in the steel city Rive -- Derby and it seems to signal a stay

of execution for Gary Megson. Then on Wednesday evening, this happened.

Breaking news from Hillsborough, Gary Megson is gone from Sheffield

Wednesday. My word, can you believe that? Two most Wednesday fans, the

timing of the announcement was the biggest surprise with the Derby Day

victory just a few days before. am a bit shocked. I did not

expected. We thought it was a joke. Then it was on the radio and

everything. He must be the only manager in history to be sacked

after winning over the local rivals. I just do not see why they have

done it. I think everybody is aghast with the timing of the

sacking but I think a lot of people were a bit uneasy with the style of

football that he played. It is the wrong time of year to do it. We are

third, what more do you have to do? There are a lot of Wednesday fans

and only two games a-year against the United and we have won one and

drew the other. There are only 13 the games left, there is not enough

time. Dave Jones was swiftly appointed as Megson's replacement.

News of another sacking should not come as a surprise. Incredibly nine

managers of our football League clubs in our region have been

sacked in the past 12 months. John Sheridan in Chesterfield is the

only one to survive from this time last year. Dave Jones began his run

up with at Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon. Recent history

demonstrates that if success does not come quickly, they could be

another man in the Hillsborough died out long before 2015. Why are

managers these days given so little time to turn the team around?

you do not like something you get rid of it. You get rid of it

quickly, were that it it is a wife or a football manager or whatever.

It is pathetic. You need to stick with a manager as long as the

players are playing and motivated to be with him. As long as there is

a good relationship with the board and the fans, why would you do it?

With the staggeringly high rate of turnover in football management is

the game just reflecting the way modern society demands instant

results. There is no industry where results are so immediate. You get a

point as a c e l of a company and you will get a -- you will take

years before you know you are successful with that company. In

football it is weeks and in months you are out if you do not deliver.

That mentality is very harmful. Gary Megson's dismissal and the

recent sacking of Lee Clark shocked many. Both clubs are well on track

to give themselves a chance of promotion. What is happening now is

very weird indeed. We have clubs that are in the top three all four

are dumping the manager. What I think it is is unrealistic

expectations by boards that, OK, we are close but not quite there. We

want to get an automatic promotion place so let us make a change now.

Despite concern among some fans, Milan Mandaric said that it was the

best interest in the club. I need to do this in order to move forward.

For that I need people to trust me. Saturday's game us all Wednesday

time will tell if it is a wise decision.

Brian you have been there and done that. What did you make of the

decision to replace Gary Megson? am not sure it was a wise decision.

Everybody in football was shocked. I do not think they were surprised

in a way because the relationship was getting strained and they were

talking about him losing his job before the Sheffield derby which

would have been a silly thing to do anyway. I was at the game and I

could fill a tension because the players I think knew there was so

much talk going around. He has done a terrific job but to get the sack

after the derby game is a ridiculous situation to be in.

Everybody thinks that he was looking at this. We are not privy

to what really went on but he must have fallen out with someone.

said the word relationship and that is key. Phil, the relationship

between manager and chairman, or owner, is very different from how

we used to be. They have been a lot of changes over the years. If I go

back to my time at Hull City, I had two chairman and people used to

question my relationship with Paul Duffin because it was too close. I

was always brought up with the old school and the new school to know

that that has to be the strongest relationship in any football club

but in today and's society, there are so many people involved in

football and there are so many sub- plots and with cheap -- with chief

executives and directors of finance and directors of football and they

are all in the way of that relationship. If that is not strong

them the results will fall and the result is that Gary Megson got the

sack. We heard a from a man who is a big football fan and he says that

football is just a reflection of the way that we are as people

nowadays. Do you see it like that? I think Milan Mandaric has a lot of

money and he has already said that he does not have the patience for

failures. What constitutes a failure? You a third in the League

and the season has not come to a climax yet it, it has not finished.

They have a great winning ratio and the chances are they will get a

promotion whether it is automatic call in the play-offs and he has

not had the opportunity to finish the job so what is failure? We do

not know. John Sheridan is the only man still in place a one of our

clubs now so is this the pattern now? Will be go back to how it was

all his business that -- is this it now? When it comes to the end or

asked nearing the end, when you are out of work you start to analyse

what had actually gone on. Coming up to my last game which was

against Chesterfield in the Johnston's Paint Trophy. We were

beaten by points and they went on to Wembley and we did not. The

following day I got a phone call from my chairman and I read between

Preston to Wembley and I would have bought myself some time. John has

bought himself some time by being at Wembley. Now you look at that

and he has been bottom of the table and he is just starting to get a

bit of form with players playing for a place at Wembley and they

have climbed off the bottom of the table and if they stick with him

then longevity will pay. Longevity is just not happening in football

at the moment and is unlikely to happen in

Well, Dave Jones wasn't officially in charge of Wednesday at Rochdale

on Saturday, but he was in the stands to watch what is now his

team. And that's where Neil Morrow starts his League One round-up,

with some remarkable, and some ridiculous results.

Dave Jones left team matters to Chris Evans as he watched his new

charges with his chairman. They saw Wednesday struggle against Rochdale

with five minutes to go it looked like all three points would be lost.

The referee awarded a dubious penalty. Gary Jones hit the post so

they came away with at least one point. Obviously it has been a

different week. We needed to quickly regrouped and all credit to

the players, they have been absolutely outstanding to a man.

They gave everything. Sheffield United fans were left scratching

their heads of the throwing away a two goal or advantage against

Oldham. They had gone one up from Harry Maguire and Ched Evans made

the result seemed beyond doubt. The game suddenly changed complexion.

Richard Cresswell's horrible own goal reduce the advantage and

things got worse when Matthew Lowton saw red with this tackle.

Within seconds things were level. Harry Maguire was sent off before

dragging back Reuben Reid and the formal Wednesday striker Shefki

Kuqi completed the comeback. were two milk up and we were

cruising and we could have put the game to bed in the first half but

we did not. Had his fill's collapse was even more surprising. The

terriers has stormed into a three - - 3-0 lead. It became three from

roads. When a Bury captain at Steve Schumacher pulled one back before

the break there seemed little danger. Bury dominated the second

period and Lenell John Lewis's had a goal which gave them 20 minutes

to find the equaliser. Ashley Eastham sent home fans into

raptures. It was a very good first half. You saw the good side of us

and the bad side of us. That is something the team have done quite

often this year. We are extremely pleased with the way things went.

There were some good chances in the first half and we limited them to a

few opportunities. When you get to that position you want to see the

game through and we managed to do that. There was a lot of excitement

in the other end of the table. Scunthorpe have been unlucky to

take nothing from Bramall Lane on Tuesday but they made amends with a

thrilling performance against Wycombe. A 2-0 up at half-time.

They shudder of the sending off of Michael O'Connor in the second half.

Then it was a 4-0. Chesterfield are hampered middle week in by Charlton.

But they have real reason for hope that they can escape the drop. The

goal ensured they took all three points and it came within a quarter

four or five points security, if you want to call it that, I know!

I'm not there is in that division. It's a dodgy word. Three out of the

and five points from Huddersfield with a game in hand. Better week

for Scunthorpe and Chesterfield. Great win for Scunthorpe. Three

winning the game and getting to the final has probably used that with

the players to embrace not only to get to the final, but have you to

win games now to secure your place. It's worked a treat for them.

They're creeping up in the league. They've had a tough period as well.

There's no easy games. Terrific games that I've seen them play and

they've deserved the win. Let's hope it's on the up. And Scunthorpe

footballers face. The one that has them worried is head to head. This

First, three draws and a defeat for our Championship challengers this

weekend, with BBC Radio Leeds Derm Tanner. Southampton's goalkeeper

Davis was the difference between victory and defeat for Leeds.

Saints took the lead somewhat against the run of play. But in the

second half, Leeds found in Davis second half, Leeds found in Davis

Our third 1-1 draw came on Friday night. Most of the evening it looks

Rotherham's game was one apiece. Barnet took an early lead. They

were booked -- pegged back. A game that wasn't one each. For

Bradley it ended in defeat for the ban tums. Matthew saunders free

kick lifts them out of the relegation zone and keeps Bradford

Elland Road, Saturday evening, could have been very different.

Fourth minute that penalty appeal for handball. I think I was

watching the game, I thought, let's just say one thing. Leeds were

excellent. Just what John Warner wanted for his home debut -- Neil

Warnock wanted for his home debut. This one, the referee wouldn't give

it if the distances were closer, but that ball has travelled ten

yards or a good save as many would say. We say about intent.

referees would say if your hands are by the side, they wouldn't give

it. When you lift your hands you are taking a chance. Warnock was

less than happy about that. Will he be happy with what he's seen from

the two games? I think he'll be delighted, particularly with the

commitment of the players. Right from the first minute of the game

they went straight at the league leaders. You couldn't tell the

difference. Wow have said Leeds were the leaders at the time. He'll

be delighted with that. He wants to see probably a bit more quality in

the finishing. Other than that, he's got something to build on.

That brings me nicely to Hull City, quality in finishing, seems to be

all that's lacking. They've got plenty to do as well. They've got

plenty to do to get in the play- offs. You're talking about the way,

we're talking about Warnock, Nicky Barmby, his tenacity is coming out

in his team. There's always one goal in. It normally they're

winning. On Friday night they were one up against it and then they

battled back and got a deserved draw in the end. I thought

Blackpool had the run of play. Tomorrow night Hull versus Leeds.

Now goal keepers. Different breed to the rest. Some so unhinged they

rattle when they walk. We sent our resident nutcase for training time

with the men between the sticks at Barnsley.

Good lad. Excellent. professional goalkeeper, it's

arguably football's most intriguing position. Your mistakes are

highlighted more than anyone's. But your heroics never grab as many

headlines as a front man. David Preeson and Luke Steel are the

keepers. Steel has been between the sticks all his life. How did it all

start? I was thrown into it because I had two older brothers, who had

the attitude of if you don't go in goal you won't play with us in the

garden. I picked it up from there, at the age four, five. The garden

was in a state as a youngster. It was just a case of me coming in

drenched with mud and rain and stuff. I enjoyed that part of it as

well. I just carried on from the age of five, six, seven and then

got into a team at nine. Not too far over. The man would works with

the keepers on a daily basis is Ian Wilcock. Tactics and technique are

important but so much of it is in the mind. Goal keepers are going to

make mistakes, but for me it's how they react after that mistake.

That's the biggest thing. Are they positive with what's just happened.

Do they forget it or does it stay with them. Top-class keepers they

move on. They have the ability to forget about it, get on with what

they have to do and revisit it later. The relationship between

keepers should be a delicate one. There's only one spot and the

number two is almost always restricted to a watching brief. But

this rare breed stick together and these two have always been close.

He lived with me for a little bit. I let him live with me rent free,

might I add. When he first come to the club, he lived with he for a

few months. That's how we got to know each other. We're sort of best

mates at the club. We do different things together, but he seemed to

move in for a week and ended up being about three months. Friends

they may be, but former Sunderland stopper Prees has made just one

first team appearance this term. He's had to be patient, something

he admits comes with age. It is frustrating. There's days when you

have your down days and it gets to you a little bit. But I think it

probably affected me more when I was younger. Now I'm a bit more

laid back. Football isn't the all encompassing thing that used to be

in my life. Once you have kids, you get perspective. It becomes easier

to deal with. I've been watching them in action all morning. I've

decided there's nothing to this goal keeping lark. I'm going to put

on something more practical and get stuck in. The transformation is

complete. A very poor man's Joe Hart.

Ian has worked with the likes of Frankie Fielding and Tom Heaton so

this was a far greater test for him. We started with the basics of the

correct stance before moving to more acrobatic drills. We go there,

shoulder over the knee. Then you drop your hands, right hand behind

the ball, top hand on top of it. Ian's advice was clearly working as

I pulled off a host of top-class saves. Brilliant. Excellent. The

other side. Superb. Now can you put it into practice? Probably not.

This hot streak didn't last long and soon the ball was flying past

me at will. He's not even seen it! After a punishing session, the best

bit of the day, a massage from head physio Craig. It meant the aching

had just about ceased by Saturday afternoon.

Steele in search of his fifth clean sheet of the season. But a

deflection meant he was beaten by this effort. But he came to the

rescue with an outstanding late stop that denied Cunningham a

winner. We had different half chances and they managed to get

through just after 90 minutes. I was pleased to keep it out. The

defenders done well after that to clear it out of the box. It would

have been a bit unfair if they'd scored because we did deserve it.

We deserved at least a point. a fantastic week. I've learned how

to think like a goalkeeper and train like one and today seen how

they put it into practice on a Saturday afternoon. A fantastic

We've been chatting with the gaffer this week and we've found a role

for you. That's brilliant. Third choice... Start by filling those

mate, cheers. Ian, come on. I don't even know where the taps are.

He's a better goalkeeper than actor. But this is what he didn't want us

to see. Barnsley weren't kind to him all the time. Look at this one.

He stopped it, that's the main thing. That's what the coach said.

He kept it out. The dynamic got me between the two keepers. They

seemed to get on one and two. Have you ever had a pair who didn't.

who didn't. But when we got promoted. We brought in Tony Warner

as a third and it changed the dynamics between one and two. I

think it's important that the goal keeping coach knows how to motivate

and get on with the individuals involved. And goal keeping coach

there's a phrase when you were flaiing that didn't exist. Didn't

exist when I was a player. And when I went into management, didn't

exist. I was coaching the goal keepers and let me tell you, I was

rubbish at it. How can an outfield player tell a specialist goalkeeper

you got it wrong. He would be offended by it. I was uncomfortable

doing that. I was pleased to see the goal keeping coaches coming in.

It's a specialist thing. They will respect that decision better.
