Episode 9 Late Kick Off Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

Mixing sports is like mixing drinks. Maybe you should not do it. But we

Mind as a pint. But not if you can see the pitch. And we meet Ian

Botham. Apparently he also played cricket. And all the weekend's

goals. With me tonight Arc two men who really the worse for wear and

always get the rounds in. John Hendrie and Brian Deane. A high and

a pint is pretty much standard for many of us before the game. But

supporters cannot drink in their seats whilst watching the game, on

like in rugby or cricket. Now there is a law which might change that.

But could it encourage trouble in the stands? For many supporters are

having a few drinks before the game is as much a part of the match the

experience as berating the referee. But since the Taylor Report

supporters are restricted as to where and when they can enjoy their

drinks on a Saturday afternoon. This is the editor of a football

magazine, F C business. He is launching a campaign to change the

legislation so that stadiums become more fan friendly. We have seen an

inability to sell alcohol in a specific way in regards to fans

actually been able to take it into the viewing area. That is a massive

pro capita to football club's revenue. -- a massive obstacle. It

is our cake and preventing the business from moving forward. --

archaic. As things stand to go have a drink in the concourse but you

are not allowed to take it into the stand. Many supporters think it is

about time to change these laws. would like to see the law removed

and then left to clubs to work out the best arrangement individually.

Do you sell argol? Do you do it in all the stands? If not do you allow

people on to the seats? -- do you sell alcohol? For one of the top

all these men in the region a relaxation of the law would be a

step too far. -- one of the top policemen in Yorkshire. On balance,

having the gap where people cannot drink whilst attending a football

match, on balance, is better than allowing them to drink during the

whole event. Rugby and cricket spectators are not stopped by the

laws, so is it not time to give football supporters are more

freedom? The comparison is not valid. Rugby and cricket do not and

have not had the same sort of problems that have blighted

football. That is the reason why the comparison is not valid. I find

it personally offensive that legislation basic we suggest that

because I am a football supporter I am likely to behave in a less

admirable way to my counterparts who support rugby or cricket clubs.

Ridiculous in the 21st century. years after the publication of the

Taylor Report opinion remained divided. Will the days of a turn

supporters can enjoy a pint on the terraces? This legislation is a

restraint of trade that can no longer be justified. I am not

saying we should never moved on from the Taylor Report. Things do

change but many of the principles that were laid out in the report

have stood the test of time and are still relevant today. Food for

thought. Drinks for thought. What do you stand and this? I have

reservations to be honest. I played in the bad old days when

hooliganism was everywhere. You would have coins thrown at you.

What of the time that was family related. -- alcohol related. It is

now more of a family game and if you add alcohol I think it can

cause havoc. People have had a drink before the game, why can they

not sit and have won whilst enjoying it? Because it is a

passionate game. After a decision goes against you whilst you have a

pint in your hands, that could go anywhere. The game has came to

pharmacy family spectacle. cricket and rugby you can, why is

that all different? The passionate aspect of football is not a good

mix with alcohol, especially on the terraces. You have families,

husbands, wives, young kids. You are talking about somebody sitting

with a pint right next to them. I do not think it has a place. Is it

a good sign for football that we can have the debate? Of course. It

shows you how far clubs have brought things forward. CCTV and

everything else. For example, Bolton on Saturday. We saw that bad

decision there. If somebody has a pint in their hands, I think it

would more -- cause more trouble than help. We shall see, but I do

not think it will come any time soon. Action now, and as Hull

City's promotion push stuttering? If they fail to make the play-offs

the main reason will be that they have drawn too many games they

should have won. This draw with Ipswich was particularly painful.

They were two - 0 ahead. But then a 67th minute penalty handed the

visitors a lifeline. Three minutes later this unstoppable shot gave

Doncaster Rovers nearly pulled off the shock of the afternoon at high

home games. That will be the telling factor. They're doing well

on their travels but must on the home form in two victories. Both

is the right man for the job. But he has lots of respect and is just

wondering just what might have been. Scunthorpe went to Preston, hoping

game ended in a scoreless draw. Our three teams are hot on the trail of

Charlton. Could they don't seem to want it. In the bottom half,

Scunthorpe are getting further away from danger. Chesterfield are still

on the thick of it. They missed a Back on for all three of our sides.

If Huddersfield could hold on to a need. Jordan roads named League One

afternoon at the Old Showground carried very different pressures.

Did Ian Botham had a preference? enjoy both. If you're that kind of

animal, you want to be in hot as part of the kitchen. To mark Billy

ready to go at any stage of the six hours. Soccer was only 90 minutes.

He may only have made 11 appearances, at but Botham still

has a soft spot for the club. He travels the world with England, but

skilled -- still keeps a close eye at Scunthorpe. I could tell you

every game. I followed everywhere in the world. It is very strange

watching football on a print-out! It is a different game them.

Everything comes about four minutes later and it is all written down. I

always find a way. It is a lot easier now. Everybody stays in

touch. I will come down to a couple of games when I get back before the

end of the season. They will have a bit of a boys' reunion. His family

tree is a rich tapestry of talent. His father was a skilled footballer

and cricketer, whilst his son are represented Hampshire as well as

both types of rugby, before he was forced into retirement with a neck

injury. Now, Ian Botham is keeping a close eye on the next generation.

I have two grandson's. My two-year- old has not yet been obsessed for -

- says, but the two older boys have a lot of talent. My granddaughter

is it a lot of sports lady as well. That is in the genes. When you have

another Botham playing in a Scunthorpe United should? Kok when

they're in the Premiership. Why not?

really my child to a hero when I was growing up. John, you will be

played against him. Yes. I played for Bradford City against him. What

a character. Enthusiastic, wholehearted and massive. How

deeply his centre-back and centre- forward. A proper all-rounder!

cannot get people playing two sportster that high-level anymore.

Are you professional with anything else? Tiddlywinks. Table tennis. I

have played a few sports at school. Not to that level, though. It is a

special sportsmen who can do what he did. John, you were very nearly

an Olympic athlete. And not shot but! I was a sprinter. I was

seventh in the Scottish schools from a year and 100 metres. Not bad

for a little guy. Not bad at all! We one of the quickest players in

your team? Yes. Every Friday morning and was out doing sprints

after training. It was a big part of my game. That is the secret of

football. Run past and score a goal. I was going to put the same

question to brine. I was quite quick. I know! In your own way!

From Beefy to Bantams. Here's Jade Lauriston with the best of the

feeling that next season, there might be a pitch. Yes. The manager

will be trying to finish the season strongly you which will give them

positive vibes for the next season. But I'm optimistic for next season

with him in charge. It will be interesting.

A quick look at tomorrow's game. Hull are at Cardiff for a big one

at the top end of the Championship, whilst in-form Reading are coming

to Doncaster. In League One, Sheffield United are

at Colchester, and Scunthorpe are playing a rearranged fixture at

Yeovil. Finally in League Two, it's Bradford versus Wimbledon and

Rotherham versus the Gulls of Torquay.
