Episode 8 Late Kick Off Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

One down, two up and a whole lot more to be decided. We are all set

for a grandstand finish, with Late Kick Off. Leaving League Two `

Scunthorpe and Chesterfield get the job done. I am so delighted for all

the players. They have worked so hard all season. So delighted for

the travelling fans today and everyone associated with the

football club. And let us make that a treble. York City's nonstop rise

takes them into the play`offs. But for Barnsley, the Championship days

are gone. Going, going, gone down. Good evening. We're nearly at the

season's end, but amid the excitement, I always try to stay

regular, so John Hendry and Brian Laws are here to add some healthy

fibre to our football feast. As ever, we want your input, too, over

the final week. You can tweet us at... We start tonight with our

promoted pair, Chesterfield and Scunthorpe, who do not do uneventful

football seasons. Take Scunthorpe first. In nine seasons, they have

gone from League to the Championship and all the way back down again. And

now, they are climbing again. For the fans who have travelled the

length and breadth of England on the up`and`down journey, it was

appropriate that this promotion should be assured far away from home

and with the rare defeat, too. Paul found heaven in Devon with them.

A 7.00am departure for St James's Park. Not the North East. 277 miles

south`west. A quick stop en route to stretch the legs ` and the

imagination. A mere six hours after setting off, the Scunthorpe faithful

land, looking for a party, despite the promise of inclement weather.

But their manager, officially the hottest since records began, had

never tasted defeat before today. This was to be the most topsy`turvy

of afternoons for Russ Wilcox. He had guided his men to the summit of

League Two, with 28 games unbeaten since taking charge, but Exeter,

fighting for survival, had a different script to the fans whose

will was severely tested under grey clouds in the nearest thing to a

roof. Craig Woodman lashed in for the home

side just before half`time. As the downpour intensified after

the interval, the United keeper Sam Slocombe was embarrassed by Jimmy

Keohane. Scunthorpe did get the ball in an

three minutes from time, but David Sywers was offside.

The final whistle signalled the end of the record`breaking run, but

promotion was still on the cards, if Phil Brown's Southend could prevent

fourth`placed Fleetwood from winning. ANNOUNCER: Fleetwood one,

Southend one. Is that full`time? Is that the

result. Is it full`time yet? We were dreadful today. That was

probably our worst performance in the 29. But all credit must go to

Exeter today, for their performance. They are fighting for their Football

League lives and it showed. The bigger picture is promotion. We have

to look at that. The 28 games have obviously helped us achieve that.

Thank you very much to Phil Brown and his boys. They have done us a

favour today. But the bigger picture as we are promoted. I am so

delighted for the travelling fans today and everybody associated with

the football club. So, although the unbeaten run was

not extended, League Two exile had ended. Time for Scunthorpe to put

the exit in Exeter. Lost two`nil. Who cares? We are through. We are

there. If Scunthorpe were happy on

Saturday, how do you think Chesterfield felt at Burton

yesterday? With the Fleetwood drawing, Paul

Cook knew his Spireites only needed a draw to all but confirm promotion,

while a win would put them up and make them favourites for the title.

In goes the cross. Holness is there to head away. Under pressure,

Humphreys. Chance for O'Shea. Who scores! And he goes to celebrate

with the Chesterfield supporters behind the goal. Is that the goal

from O'Shea which seals automatic promotion for Chesterfield? Doyle at

the byline. Plenty queueing up. Into the box it goes. A cushioned header.

And Jay O'Shea gets Chesterfield's second goal! That is it. Automatic

promotion is sealed. Three points next week. We are going to go up as

champions again. Cheers, lads! Up the Blue Army! Yes, we all stuck

together and we did it. Hopefully, Fleetwood next week and we are

champions. Brilliant. Fantastic. Ecstatic, aren't we?

Yes. I am so delighted for all the players. They have worked so hard

all season. Today, they got the reward. And you have got to go away

and work harder again, because to be successful in football is difficult

nowadays. But we have had a great day today and I am just delighted

for everyone connected with our football club. John, you are the

perfect person to tell Paul Cook that champagne is good for a sore

throat. They had a bit of a wobble round about the Wembley visit, but

they have got there, that is all that matters. Yes, there was a lot

of pressure on Paul Cook, as well, with the resources that he had to

hand there. But he stuck with it. He has brought in a higher calibre of

player, who have played at a higher level. There was pressure on him

there, but they have done ever so well. They had the Wembley

appearance and that was the icing on the cake, getting automatic

promotion. Because, going down to play Burton, they are in the

play`off positions themselves. It is not an easy place to go. And for

O'Shea to get the two goals, it was stand up and be counted. It is all

about having the nerve, having the bottle at this stage of the season.

Certainly, he had that. He showed great composure. He is on two main

goals from midfield this season, which is a decent return. You

touched on the pressure. Everybody knew that Chesterfield had the

budget this season. They were the kind of expected to do it. Will that

have made it difficult for Paul Cook or would he just have taken that in

his stride? Of course, no matter who you are, expectation levels, I had

the same expectation levels at Barnsley. Expectation levels put

pressure on you. But he is just gone about his job in a quiet and

professional manner. As I said, they had the Wembley appearance as well.

They did have a wee bit of a wobble on the back of that. But it would be

great to get the icing on the cake can be Fleetwood on Saturday. I

suppose they have got the resources to make a fist of League One, as

well? Onto Scunthorpe, Brian, you were there at the start of the

season. Does that make it sweeter? I am delighted for the players. They

deserve that. Right from day one, they were very focused on what they

wanted to do. And credit to them, they have carried out on all the way

through. I would like to have been part of that. But that is football.

It is very important to have a fantastic dressing room, and I

thought that is what we had. I wish them all the best for next season.

To go on the run that they have, it says a lot for both the manager and

supporters and players. It is know about building for the future. They

have been up and down many a time, but there is talk of the new stadium

going forward. I hope they will build the momentum and may be in for

the championship again. The aim is a different kettle of fish for him

now. It is added pressure. But he has coped well with that.

Recruitment will be important for next season. It is not only about

just consolidating in that division, but also doing well in it.

Your may actually complete a hat`trick of promotions for our

region 's teams. They have gone 16 games without defeat to make the

play`offs. I could not get to the game on Saturday. Who would've

thought last December we will be witnessing these of jubilation. York

City Started the season on the fringes of relegation, having failed

to win in seven `` 11 games. But they suddenly got some momentum and

rocketed up the league with 16 games unbeaten. But getting to really are

today has not been about just what has happened on pitch. We work with

than half an hour of going out of existence. They were saved and ten

years later, we are more about building a football club. Building

the late squad is something that Nigel Worthington seems to have

mastered in the 14 months he has been in charge, but he is also be of

the financial limitations. We know there is not going to be millions of

pounds to spend. That is where the football club is out. We will worked

to that accordingly. It is straightforward. You work to

whatever your budget takes you, it is as simple as that. The board have

implemented the strategy to take the football club for word, but not in

any bust and gloom scenario. We are trying to chip away bit by bit. We

are getting rewarded a little bit for our efforts. The are also

looking forward to a new stadium and 2016. There is a lot of work on a

day`to`day basis going into this, but that is on the training ground.

We are investing in more modern buildings. We have got plans to

pretend a top artificial pitch there, so that there's a lot going

on. So what is the secret to success? I think a intensity. You

have got to keep your sheep all the time and always be looking to grab a

goal at the other end. The sped within the group is first class.

Everyone is buying into everything I am trying to do. Hopefully, with the

results and performances, we can see that it has worked. It is a case of

trying to keep it going. The final home game of the season was vital to

get the points required for the play`offs. Newport came closest to

opening the scoring. York City but created the most

chances, with only a fantastic change and the sea from the

goalkeeper preventing the visitors taking the lead. But the three

points needed came from the strike from Coulson. This shift the have

put on has been great and we have got the just rewards for that.

Fantastic result, comes everywhere at the start of the season.

I am so pleased. I think we will get there. I have been watching this

team since 1970. Doing it again is absolutely fantastic.

John, have you ever known a turnaround like York City have

experienced? I was going to say "have you ever known anything like

that?" But I thought you might think I meant the chairman's jacket!

How happy are you, by the way? I'm very happy.

You're absolutely delighted! A little kid, you are, Guy. No, but if

you look at the turn of the year there...

Unbelievable. 22 points. Torquay have gone down as

well. Absolutely phenomenal. Even more so when you think where they

came from last year. They were nearly relegated. Nigel has been an

international defender and manager with Northern Ireland. It's all

based on defence. They're so resilient. And he brought in Lowe

and McCombe and they've done a fantastic job. I still think they

are underdogs going into it. But there is no pressure on them.

They'll go in and enjoy it. Hopefully he'll have his game plan

and keep it tight and nick a goal. Well if they keep on winning 1`0, as

they did at the weekend. Brian, fine margins, but three goals conceded in

three games? It's incredible for them to do that

in the division they are in. The turnaround, as we were saying, the

defence has been the kingpin of it all. Conceding goals last season and

at the start of this season. Similar discomfort. We conceded 70`odd

goals. And the defence was the first thing we worked on. It's a great

formula to build on. And look at Scunthorpe, the amount of clean

sheets they have had. It's no coincidence they got promoted. And

for York, the change`around from that period is phenomenal. Probably

the most consistent team in the division by a mile. Going into the

play`offs, that's not a bad thing. They could get anybody in the

play`offs. John, I know you were saying to me you'd want to avoid

Southend. Yeah, Phil Brown's team are going

ever so well. Fleetwood as well. They will go in as underdogs. But

there's a lot happening, plans for the new stadium. They've brought

Richard Cresswell back in behind the scenes. A lot of things happening

off the field, trying to get the Academy sorted as well. Starting

from bottom to top. I've got to say as well, well done

to Jason McGill and the family because they have done a remarkable

job running the club and bringing it up to where it is now. Well done.

Coming up: Barnsley's time in the Championship comes to an end for

now. And two battling Bantams do the 'Man

On' honours. I just told him!

Aagh! So, to the Championship action. For

the teams we follow it's a sorry story of one win and four defeats

this week. But the big tales concern Doncaster, for whom a nervy end

awaits, and Barnsley, whose fate is sadly sealed.

Danny Wilson took his Barnsley side to Boro on Saturday knowing that a

win was his only realistic hope if the Reds were to avoid relegation.

Yet for the first 45 minutes, his side in powder blue looked as though

they had no fight left. Just as it seemed that Barnsley's season would

end with a whisper, Mvoto scored a crucial goal, sending the travelling

supporters from South Yorkshire wild. But the joy lasted less than

two minutes. Mvoto went from hero to villain, his mistake handing Lee

Tomlin this gift. Barnsley pushed for a vital winner but left gaps at

the back. In the 90th minute, Boro broke forward to break Barnsley

hearts. Danny Graham with the goal. Reds fans knowing the game was up.

Deep into injury time, Lee Tomlin added the final insult. Barnsley

will play League One football next year.

Being relegated is not just today. It's about the whole season.

Unfortunately we have not scored enough goals. That's been a problem

as we have gone along. Doncaster desperately needed to pick

up points against Reading. Rovers have been pulled it into the

relegation battle in recent weeks. Things looked good when Billy Sharp

set up James Coppinger to put Donny in front in the 25th minute. But the

second half was a disaster for Rovers. After the hour mark, Reading

were awarded a penalty for a foul by Paul Clinton on former Rotherham

striker Adam Le Fondre. He picked himself up and scored from the spot.

With just three minutes remaining, Reading scored the killer goal.

Pavel Pogrebnyak left completely unmarked and he headed to Johnstone.

Deep into injury time, Pogrebnyak sealed Reading's win. It's truly

squeaky bum time for Rovers. ?NEWLINE At 1`1, we are pushing

forward trying to get the winner. Sometimes you've got to use your

head, sit back and keep it 1`1 and see if you get a chance.

Leeds United did Doncaster a potentially huge favour at

Birmingham City. The first half was a quiet affair but two quick goals

from Matt Smith and Danny Pugh in the second half transformed the

game. Then more proof that Leeds' luck is changing. Paul Caddis

scoring an own goal. Birmingham's Federico Macheda grabbed a late

consolation. But ultimately this defeat for the Blues could be what

saves Doncaster from relegation. Donny must travel to Leicester next

week and it will not be easy, as Leicester showed by sweeping aside

Huddersfield on Saturday. Gary Taylor`Fletcher put the visitors one

up in the 31st minute. And this year's champions confirmed the win

just after the hour mark, Mahrez scrambling the ball home. Mark

Robins has some thinking to do this summer.

There is a real end of season feeling about Sheffield Wednesday at

the moment. Securing wins has been difficult. On Saturday at Bolton,

the Owls' defence was woeful. Neil Danns was gifted one first, then Lee

Chung`yong took advantage of a comedy of errors to score Bolton's

second. But if the first two goals were defensive errors, there was no

complaint about the third. Trotter with a fabulous strike. Wednesday

did stop the rout with their own great goal, Joe Mattock with a

blistering volley which left Bolton's keeper with no chance,

ending the game 3`1. Barnsley are down to end an

eight`year stay in the Football League's top division. For

Doncaster, as with last year's promotion, their fate comes down to

a dramatic final day. It is one from four or maybe five to fill the final

relegation spot. With Rovers likely to have to get something, maybe even

a win, at champions Leicester. Leeds leapfrog Wednesday, but you get

nothing for just being our highest placed side this season.

Well, Barnsley, it's over, John. An unhappy anniversary as it turned

out. Yeah, 17 years to the day when we

got promoted to the Premier League, as such. Ironically with Danny

Wilson. But the thing about getting relegated, you cannot feel sorry for

yourself. You have to come back for the preseason, sleeves rolled up,

and say get on with the job. But Danny has a job in the summer.

He'll stay, won't he? I would think so. I'd like to think

so. I'm sure he will. At both ends of the pitch. There is only 13 goals

for the top scorer this year, Chris O'Grady. After that, the second top

scorer is four goals. And you've got things like this with

Mvoto. Exactly. If you have scored to go

1`0 up and you're fighting for your life, then you have to keep it tight

for the next few minutes or so. Then you make a silly mistake like that.

And they paid for it. But they have conceded the most goals in the week,

as well with Millwall. So it's a tough job for Danny in the summer to

recruit players who can get goals. As we said at the start of the

season, where are the goals coming from? The thing is, next year there

are a lot of derbies. Potentially eight clubs from our area in League

One next year, if we include Doncaster, York, and Rotherham.

Let's not include Doncaster for the moment because they have a heck of a

final day, Brian. They go to the champions, Leicester City, and

they've got to hope that they have been on the pop all week, quite

frankly. Well, let's hope they've got their

flip`flops on and ready to go. With Doncaster, we were just talking a

few months ago, asking if they looked like they would be OK. And

they've just had a huge dip at the wrong time. And they have found

themselves dragged into it right now. They'll have to rely on some

good results as well. It looks like they'll have to get

something. One win in 18 away games for Doncaster.

Yeah. After winning at Elland Road, you thought they were going to be

safe. But since then it has been shocking form. They're at champions

Leicester on Saturday. It couldn't be any harder. But they need Bolton

and Wigan to do them favours and get results. So they are relying on

other people. Yeah. It's going to be tough for

Doncaster. But what a thrilling season coming to a finale once

again. Like last year, but in reverse. We've got League One on the

way, including Bradford's win against Crawley, which two of their

finest warmed up for in style. Take a bow, Andrew Davies and Stephen

Darby. Our finest 'Men On' ever. Hi, I'm Andrew Davies, centre half

Ah, dear me. Banter, buffoonery. Brilliant. Well done, Bradford boys.

And then they went and won at the weekend. Bradford, two, Crawley,

one. Port Vale one, Sheffield United, two. But first a Rotherham

recovery against MK Dons. Rotherham United's form has dipped

slightly in recent weeks, since their hopes of an automatic

promotion spot faded. And on Saturday they fell behind to MK

Dons, Matt Kennedy with the ninth minute opener. The Millers were

offered a chance to get back into the game when Brendon Galloway was

sent off for a second yellow card three minutes into the second half.

But while Rotherham piled on the pressure, it was the Dons who scored

next. Izale McLeod With a goal that was totally against the run of play.

Rotherham, though, under Steve Evans, are battlers. They got their

reward with ten minutes to go. Michael O'Connor with the finish.

Revell's equalizer in injury time sent the New York Stadium wild.

We'll find out next week who they will get in the play`offs.

Bradford and Crawley are two sides with little to play for. The first

half at Valley Parade reflected that. Aaron McLean finishing in

great style to put the Bantams one up. Jamie Proctor lofting the ball

over an out`rushing John McLaughlin. To celebrate their final home game

of the season, Gary Thompson with the winner that sent Bradford fans

home happy. The Bantams have consolidated this season. And Phil

Parkinson will want them to push on next term.

Sheffield United played Friday night away at Port Vale, who are managed

by former Blades boss, Micky Adams. Louis Dodds put the home side ahead

in the 51st minute. But United's Jamie Murphy levelled the match,

with ten minutes to go. N the dying minutes, Chris Porter pounced on a

mistake by Vale's Sam Johnson to give the Blades all three points.

United have finished this season magnificently. It was the opening

half of their campaign that did for them.

Rotherham find out next week who their play`off opponents will be.

They can finish anything from third to fifth. And could face any of

Peterborough, Leyton Orient, or Preston. For the Blades and the

Bantams,nearly done, but not quite on the beach yet.

They have both had all right seasons. Bradford consolidating,

Sheffield United red hot favourites, I think you'd say.

It will be a cracking League next year. I'll look forward to it.

And Rotherham, will they still be in it? That's the question. We know

they have done superbly well. Who do they want to avoid in those

play`offs? Or who didn't want to get? Let's be positive!

If it was me, I would prefer Leyton Orient. Because Peterborough were in

the Championship last year. I mean, OK, they are cavalier with goals and

what have you. Preston are probably the best side in there. So I'd go

for Leyton Orient. I'd agree with that. I think Preston

are the team to avoid. They are one of the most solid teams I have seen

in the division. They will be a hard nut to crack. But I think that

Leyton Orient, as John said, would be the one they'd want to try and

get hold of. But whatever happens, they have had a great season.

And over the two legs, they are going to need the sort of resilience

they showed at the weekend, Brian. Yeah, they have got that resilience.

And when you're up there, you need it. Because when you go a goal down,

you don't want them to think that it all over. They need a resilience

about them that they will go all the way through to the end. That's what

you need in the play`offs and they've certainly got it.

A quick word on your old team, Bradford, John.

Phil will be happy with that. I was down there on Saturday and spoke to

him. If you had given that to him at the start of the season, he would

have accepted that. He said that. So he's got a wee job to do in the

summer to bring in new recruits, which he's got his eye on.

Gone up. Stayed up. Steady away. That us done for tonight. If you
