Episode 9 Late Kick Off Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

And just as we were getting going, welcome to the last of this season's

Late Kick Off. A grand title tussle to end a superb

season in League Two for our clubs. But it is Doncaster despair, as

Rovers return to League One. And we have a lyrical Late Kick Off

lament to Barnsley. It was like watching Brazil.

Good evening. Here we are at the end of another football season.

Seems like no time since we started and two men who can vouch for time

moving more quickly as you get older, Dean Windass and John

Hendrie, are here to give us their end of term reports.

We also want to hear from you. Here is how you you can contact us

on social media... I am sure editor Neil will continue

his excellent goals flash service during the play`offs.

Whatever the result between Chesterfield and Fleetwood, a party

atmosphere was guaranteed at the Proact Stadium.

Chesterfield had the task of clinching the League Two title.

Slip up and Scunthorpe and Rochdale could claim the prize for

themselves. In a spirit of pure spitefulness, we

sent our own in`house Rochdale supporter, Nathan Lord.

The League Two title was in Chesterfield's hands on Saturday,

going into the final game of the season against Fleetwood.

But it was Fleetwood who got the opening goal goal.

Matty Blair somehow managing to dance his way past the Chesterfield

defence. Over at Glanford Park, Scunthorpe

were doing their bit against York to try and grab the title.

But Rochdale went one up against Newport, which meant that they went

to the top of the table. The Iron got another ten minutes

later, through Hawkridge's low strike.

But that would not matter so long as Rochdale were in front.

There was another goal at Rodney Parade and this time it was Newport

that got an equaliser, which sent Scunthorpe back to the top of the

league, going into half`time. But just before the break, the

Minster Men grabbed the one back, with this great strike from Ryan

Brobbel. Back at the Proact, the Spireites

came out on fire for the second half. Sam Hurd made it 1`1, but a

draw was still not going to be good enough for them, with Scunthorpe

beating York. However, it was not long before

Chesterfield got another, with this cracker from Gary Roberts, sending

the home side back to the top of the division.

Over Glanford Park, York were not going to let Scunthorpe ruin their

superb unbeaten run. Will Hayhuryt finding the bottom corner, to make

it 17 games without defeat for the Mintyer Men.

Back over at Rodney Parade, there was even more drama, with Newport

grabbing a late winner, which meant Scunthorpe were back to into second

place in the table to end a record`breaking season under Russ

Wilcox. It is brilliant. I have been

watching them all season. This is what we have been striving for.

It has been ups and downs all day. We were top one minute, second the

next and then back to third. And it is my birthday.

Was it always going to be a party today?

Oh, no doubt about it. No matter what, there was always going to be a

party. Chesterfield's 2`1 victory sealed

the League Two title. It was the icing on the cake for Paul Cook's

team and celebrations started in style.

Lt always feels fandabidozee when you are watching Chesterfield!

# Championis, championis. Last week was good, but this was

brilliant. It has had us biting nails till the end. It has been

unbelievable. To win it again and have my kids here, it has been

unbelievable. We were the best team all year and

we deserved it. It is magic. And my granddaughter is

here and my son. And I found out today, that I am going to have a

little grandson. Congratulations.

So, fantastic day. It is the cherry on top. Champions,

we are champions now. For all the players involved, they have done a

great job. For the players, great for everyone involved. For the fans,

everything, it is just the top. The whole day was set up for us to

do something good. And at half`time, obviously, you are not happy. But I

thought in the second half, we did really well. We started really well.

And players like Gary Roberts. Football is all about players.

What a day. We did not do things easily here. We fell behind in the

first half. We started a bit flat, but you could not have picked a

better way to finish this season. Yes, great day for Chesterfield,

they are the champions. It is a 1`2 table, with Chesterfield the

champions, Scunthorpe in second and York city in seventh, from being

22nd at the start of the year. Fleetwood in the play`offs, more of

that in a moment. First of all, Chesterfield. Champions, John? The

best team? Without a shadow of a doubt. It is

not just about them being champions, it is the way they have done it.

They have been entertaining all season, playing attacking football.

Gary Roberts, of all people, getting the winning goal. He is a superb

player who can play any higher league, no doubt about it. New line

I know we have been talking about it, Dean, but the football they

play, as well, it is not just the pump it and lump it variety, is it?

It is proper football, as they say. I love Cooky, I played against him a

few years ago. He was a good player, as well. He has managed to install

that in to his team that they have to pass the ball around. Like John

said, some lower league clubs, want to go route one, but they pass it

about. Like you said there, Gary Roberts. If you have one

exceptionally good football in your team, it can define your season. I

cannot believe Huddersfield let him go, to be honest.

They have got quite a good few players Deano, not just the one. And

what were you doing down there as their mascot?!

What gave it away, was it the ears?! As for Scunthorpe, no real

disappointment. They finished as runners`up, they have not got the

title. But they cannot be too disappointed, they have had a

terrific season. A brilliant job that Russ Wilcox has

done there. I think that is his third promotion with the football

club, as player, coach and manager. So, he served his apprenticeship

under Brian Laws, as such. Well done to both of the clubs. Yet,

they had that massively long unbeaten run, did Scunthorpe, which

recently came to an end, but they will be well served. They may be

will do well in the division higher. And they may yet be joined by yet

another of our clubs, York city. Terrific gesture from the club this

week, they are going to pay for any of the 1,006 travelling supporters

who want to go to the second leg at Fleetwood, they are going to shell

out on the coach travel for them. What are their chances?

What a fantastic job Nigel has done. As you just said they are, Gary, you

are a York city fan, and they were 22nd when he took over. And what a

fantastic job. Listen, momentum takes you through. They have been on

a great run. You are saying there, will they get over the line? Who

knows? I still think they are very much the

underdogs. Fleetwood have got a far, far, bigger budget and bigger squad.

It is a tough task, but it is good going in as the underdog. There is

no pressure on you, just go and enjoy it. Give it your best shot.

Bring on Saturday. And that first leg. So, all our League Two drama

took place at the top, whilst in the Championship, we were focused on the

bottom and Doncaster's bid to beat the drop. On Saturday, it came down

to Paul Dickov's team having to match or better Birmingham's result

at Bolton and they had to do it away to the champions, Leicester city.

Paul Burland was there to take it all in.

# Championi, championi! #. What a difference a year makes. The

celebrations following what was arguably Doncaster Rovers' most

memorable moment ` a dramatic season finale at Brentford. Staring defeat

in the face one second? He has hit the crossbar amd missed it!

.. And celebrating a promotion clinching goal, the next.

He puts it into the empty net and Doncaster have won promotion to the

Championship! Fast forward 12 months and utter

dejection. Doncaster arrived at Leicester

knowing that the hosts would be celebrating, come what may. But they

knew that they would stay up of Birmingham, playing at Bolton,

failed to better Rovers' result. # Staying up, staying up, Donny

Rovers! # Staying up, staying up, I say! # Staying up, staying up, Donny

Rovers! # Playing football in the Didcot way!

The one thing I have got is a group of players who, every week, have

given everything they have got. We have kept positive. I have just said

to the lads, go out and work as hard as you can and do the best you can.

And you know what, sometimes it goes for you. I will be getting told what

is going on elsewhere. I think it would be stupid not to. I would be

lying if I told you I was not bothered about other results. All we

have to do is hope that we can get the result which means that we do

not have to be looking elsewhere. The Rovers fans had dressed for a

party. Others were dividing their attention between events at

Leicester and those at Bolton, where, 56 minutes in, Lee Chung`yong

put thel home side ahead, making Birmingham's relegation the more

likely. Use quickly filtered through to the Rovers travelling army. But

that was tempered when Leicester won a penalty at the expense of James

Husband. David Nugent put the champions ahead. Doncaster were

still above Birmingham by a single point, then, came another goal

stewards, so medical help could be given. Sadly, he later died in

hospital and has been named as Ray second.

The shot! Zigic! Off the line! And in! Paul Caddis! Have Birmingham

city done it? It meant Rovers slipped into the

relegation zone on goal difference in the very final moments of the

season. You know and I know, it was not the

last minute today, it is over the course of 46 games.

We have hung in there to the last minute of the last day, which may

sound a little bit stupid, but it is of credit to the players. Everybody

was expecting us to be down by now. The disappointing thing is that we

have just come up a little bit short. I feel for everybody at the

club and the fans. The fans were absolutely magnificent. We have been

relegated in the last minute today and the standing ovation they gave

the players was outstanding. There's not many clubs who would do that.

I am disappointed. But we came to fight and we will fight another day.

Absolutely gutted, but that is football. It was the same last year

the other way, and it has happened to us today. Brentford missed a

penalty in the last minute and we scored right afterwards. Birmingham

scored an equaliser today and we are down.

To lose like that. Straight to bed I think. You can forget about as going

out on the town tonight. Disappointed. We had some good times

in these 90 minutes. We heard that Birmingham were losing. But that is

football, isn't it? We will be back, though. Super Donny

Rovers, we will be back. Commiserations to all who have

worked so hard at Doncaster Rovers the season. I know we cannot change

anything, but there was one big incident at Leicester which settled

the game. Should this have been a penalty?

I think so. I think, as a defender, as soon as you dangle your leg, he

has not got the ball. He has left his leg there.

Is there contact? I think there is contact. John is

not so sure. I actually think it is a penalty. We get three or four

views of it. In live play, I think he has left his leg dangling. It is

one of these things, when you are down at the bottom of the league,

these things go against you. But the manager said that, it was not simply

just about that penalty decision. But I remember, when they were

leading 3`1, when the game get called off and then they lost their

rescheduled one. Everything has gone against them. Even the last month or

so. I know we sometimes see that players do not care, do the scenes

at the Intel is differently? Does it hurt? Absolutely, for those guys, it

is the loving, it is their job. It is a massive blow for everyone.

Football has a habit of kicking you in the teeth. Swings and

roundabouts. All the best to Doncaster in league one. Coming up `

two goals but I have a twitter or cruise? Sheffield Wednesday tackle

man on. And we have a brain. As Shakespeare would say, alas,

forsooth. Before those poetic delights and League One, our other

four sides from the Championship, no drama for them, nothing complicated.

But Neil Morrow starts his round`up with a club for whom the word

complicated was invented. Leeds United.

As ever, Leeds fans turned up in numbers at Elland Road, but weren't

they are there to make sure that their horror season was really and

truly over? United 's players seemed as keen as the fans to get to the

beach, awful defending let Simon Dawkins sneak Derby into the lead in

the sixth minute. But County weren't overenthusiastic either, and five

minutes into the second half Ross McCormack found Matt Smith and he

checked Lee Grant to make it one each. Leeds fans can now relax for a

while. All they have to wait for is news on Brian McDermot's future and

a certain court judgement in Sardinia. Sheffield Wednesday seemed

to put their cue in the rack sometime ago, survival after a

wobbly start was secured after March but Stuart Gray will be disappointed

that his players could not keep their run of good form going. The

Earls went behind at Ipswich in the 37th minute, Tommy Smith scoring

eventually after Wednesday failed to clear the danger. But the Owls go

back into it ten minutes into the second half when Kieran Lee scored

his first goal for the club. And the Sheffield side made enough chances

to have got something out of the game. Halfway through the second

half Paul Green headed home what proved to be the winner for the

tractor men. Milan Mandaric wants to sell, Wednesday are definitely in

need of some new investment. Huddersfield have consolidated their

championship status this season, but recent results have left much to be

desired. At Watford on Saturday particularly in the second half Town

decided to have a party. In the 46th minute Joe Lolly put Huddersfield in

front and soon after Lolly turned provider, kind of. Danny Ward

probably did not expect to see this shot squirm in. And Ward's second

also had a touch of fortune, but do not take anything away from this

finish. Ward then completed his hat`trick with three minutes to go.

But the good stay for the Watford goalkeeper. A great day for the

Terriers. Troy Deeny scored in injury time for Watford but no

matter, this was a lovely way for Town to go on their hols. The sun

came out for Barnsley's final game in the championship against QPR, but

two goals in two minutes near the end of the first half made for a

gloomy affair despite the weather. Charlie Austin scored the first for

the Londoners, and although Austin wanted to claim the second, that

goal has to be chalked up to Barnsley 's Jean`Yves M'voto. Chris

O'Grady who was Barnsley 's player of the year gave the Reds some hope

in the 54th minute. But the revival was soon ended when QPR got their

third. A brilliant individual goal by the South Korean, Yun Suk`young.

O'Grady scored his second of the game late on to give Barnsley fans

something to cheer. Just like their season, it was too little too late.

It is a sorry bottom half of the table story all told, Leeds top of

the cluster of our best placed teams in the football league and then

below the dreaded dotted line, Doncaster go straight back down to

League One and Barnsley are going there with them.

So looking at the action from Saturday, Huddersfield town. They

finished with a flourish, Danny Ward with the first hat`trick of his

career as a substitute. And I guess all Huddersfield supporters are

thinking, second win in 13 games. Where has this been? You go to

Vicarage Road and it is a tough place to go, obviously both teams

are not playing for anything but Mike Robinson might be thinking

about, well, consistency, every week, you don't know. You wouldn't

put them on your football coupon, would you? It is what every coach

wants, consistency, and it seems to be the hardest thing to find. Yes,

particularly in that division. All our teams are the same. Looking at

all five teams, not one of them have been consistent. And talking about

inconsistency, Sheffield Wednesday? What would be your end of season

assessment? But what a fantastic job he has done. Do you think he has? He

has done a fantastic job. I know him. He's a Withenshaw lad, he has

taken over from Dave Jones and he has done a fantastic job. When he

changes his style of play he has them down playing a bit more

football as such. The priority of him taking the position there,

Stewart, we all thought they must be involved in a relegation battle. He

settled the ship enough for them to be comfortable so I think leave it

with him and carry on next year. Don't mend what is not broken. With

the last programme of the series, we have to, where we started, Leeds

United. What happens there? This wasn't a bad result at the weekend

against Derby, who have been flying. I guess it is impossible to assess

them in the field and impossible to predict what happens next. You are

talking 30,000 supporters, just short of that on Saturday, so

obviously the fans are still behind them. A great performance against

Derby County. End`to`end stuff. That could have been three all as such.

So much can happen in the summer. Only Massimo Chelimo knows what is

going to happen. One word answers from both of you. When we get back

here in August, will Brian McDermott be the manager of Leeds United? I

don't think so, I think it is a soap opera. Yes or no? I don't think so.

Yes. We will take that. ?? new line It wouldn't be Late Kick Off without

a final outing of Man On. This week it's Wednesday's Paul Corry and

Caolan Lavery, twoof the younger Owls in the squad, but their age is

no excuse for the response to question one.

Owls. What will Roy Hodgeson do on May the 12th? Announce his World Cup

O'Dell. They are not that old. Derek Dooley. Which city was buried after

Mount Vesuvius erupted in 709A.D? It begins with a P, doesn't it? I have

no idea. Bit like Portsmouth's nickname. Pompeii.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm going to miss Man On! A whole

lot more than Rotherham will miss League One if they can win through

the play`offs. Here are the Millers, the Blades and the Bantams, in

action.and here's Neil Morrow again. Play`offs were alread assured for

Rotherham, but they could confirm a home town second leg if they can win

and other results went for them. And they started like a house on fire,

Wes Thomas putting them one up inside 52 seconds. And halfway

through the first half, Thomas found his and the Millers' second goal as

Rotherham found the living was easy at the County ground. But somewhat

against the run of play, Swindon pulled one back on the hour mark,

Kari Arnason fouled Massimo Luongo and Michael Smith scored from the

penalty spot. But an equaliser would have been a travesty and the Millers

can now prepare for Preston in the playoffs. Sheffield United and

Conventry was played in front of a big, holiday weekend crowd, enjoying

the Bramwell Lane sunshine. The first half was a quiet affair, until

Coventry took the lead in the 39th minute, through Nathan Delfouneso,

but the Blade's resurgence through 2014 continued, Ryan Flynn levelling

things in the 62nd minute. And Connor Coady was again involved for

United's winner. Ben Davies with the clinical finish, the Blades miss

promotion by one place, but it's been a great year so far for

Sheffield United. Braford's visit to relegation threatened Tranmere was

always likely to prove tricky against a side battling for their

League One lives. And the Bantams fell behind when John McLoughlin

allowed Matthew Pennington's effort to get past him in the seventh

minute. But the tension of the relegation fight clearly got to

Tranmere's Junior Brown, who was given a straight red card for this

nasty tackle on Nathan Doyle after half an hour. Yet despite Bradford

having a one man advantage, it took until nine minutes to go before they

broke down 10`man Tranmere. Jon Stead's deflected shot beating the

keeper. Tranmere still nearly won it, Jean`Louis Akpa Akpro missing a

sitter. And with that, Rovers lost heart. Aaron McLean with a top

drawer finish ending a highly satisfactory first season back in

League One. So Rotherham up a notch to finish, which means that they

will be at home in the second leg of their playoff semifinal, which will

be against Simon Grayson's Preston North End. Sheffield United big

favourites I would think for next season, whilst Bradford in the end

can reflect on a top half finish and a good job done after getting

promoted with Rotherham last season. Would you agree with that? Would you

agree that we have done OK this season? I think so. I think the key

will be getting Aaron McLean set. He has missed a lot of football. He is

big shoes to fit. He has picked up after a slow start. He was chasing

his fitness a little bit. He played a lot for all city, when you play a

lot there it is on the park. He has a great pro. He is a fit lad. Once

you start playing games, he is a goal`scorer. Art the well set to

take it further? It depends how much he has to spend. I do not know what

Phil has but I think he will look to bring in some loan players for the

season. We know Sheffield United are well set, we have made them

favourites for next season. We'll Rotherham still be in league one?

What are their chances against Preston? It will be difficult. Simon

Preston has them going very well. They are the strongest team in the

play`offs. If they beat Preston... Great result at the weekend. If they

beat Preston they will get promoted. Evans gets results. Like John said,

they are favourites, Preston. The squad we have. Grayson is a

fantastic man. If they get past Preston they will do it? At the

overcome that they have a chance. As John said, there is pressure. The

good thing is they are going into the play`offs on form. That counts

for a lot. They are getting results. If you are going in on form you have

a chance. Fingers crossed for Rotherham United. These are the

upcoming fixtures, the play`offs for Rotherham at York with them going to

Deepdale on Saturday. The return leg is one week on Thursday. Your car at

home on Saturday night and on the second leg they go to the set `` to

the West Coast. If you can't make is to see them, BBC radio Sheffield and

radio York will have all the news and every cake covered.

That's almost it from us for another season.my thanks to John and Dean

with some wise words of contemplation from Ian McMillan, the

Bard of Barnsley. The Tykes are down, but like all our sides `

they'll be back. Good night. This season has been a long goodbye

and now beneath an unforgiving Barnsley sky we had met at the table

does not live. Instead defeat in the face has helped our eyes. It was not

much like watching Brazil, 17 years since we won promotion in the town

was filled with such promotion, her tears of joy made a Barnsley Ocean,

our games where Barnsley poet in motion. It was like watching Brazil.

Now for the older fellow and the callow youth your uncle Trevor and

anti`roads as Shakespeare would say alas forces the table tells the

blinding truth. It is not like watching Brazil. It is a terrible

word is relegation, championship train has left the station. And

began the season with such anticipation I am left with a

feeling of pure deflation. It was hardly like watching Brazil. Some

seasons are epic. This one has been a farce. As southerners would say we

have been outclassed. We could not string together a single pass so I

will spend the summer sitting on my... City. And watch the World Cup

from Brazil. But before we know it will start again and rental flow

from your gaming and in the 11 men will play 11 men and they will score

Main and we will score ten and it might be like watching Brazil. It

made! Be like watching Brazil. and the grand final with me,

Graham Norton. My fellow friends, it's time

to get your glad rags on, invite your friends over,

and bring out the hors d'oeuvres, because this is one party

you don't want to miss. Eurovision!
