Hello and welcome to Match of the Day 2. Four teams in action today -

three of them chasing qualification for next year's Champions League,

and one of them just hoping to remain in the top flight. We've got

Mark Lawrenson, Martin Keown and Robbie Savage and January's Goal of

the Month as well. But our first stop this evening is Old Trafford.

Execution has too much expect patient, and by Manchester United's

standards, this season has not been a success so far. But Fulham fans

would probably bite your hand off for United's predicament. Rene

Meulensteen has taken over from Martin Jol, and he has now been in

charge for 11 league matches, only winning three of them. In those 11

games, they have conceded 29 goals. Guy Mowbray was watching this one.

Rock bottom was the assessment of Rene Meulensteen after the defeat to

Sheffield united. At the upbeat demeanour showed by the squad today

tells of a team which believes the only way is up. Manchester United

have made three changes today. Income Darren Fletcher, Nemanja

Vidic and Rafael. Full's new record by is not deemed ready for his debut

yet, but two other signings are, Johnny Heitinga and Ryan

Tunnicliffe. There is a first league start for 18-year-old Muamer

Tankovic. And there is a return from injury for John Arne Riise. Three

days on from the anniversary of the Munich air disaster, Old Trafford

remembers. Darren Fletcher. Patrice Evra.

Young. Fletcher. Lovely ball, well-controlled by van Persie. But

is a good tackle, and another good one, from Heitinga.

It has been quite a loop key -- a low-key opening 14 minutes, but

then, for any of us who worked at Anfield yesterday, anything would be

low-key. Fulham edging themselves into the

game. Good ball, good run, and a fine finish! And Fulham have the

lead! Well, that is a turn that few saw coming. It has been all

Manchester United, they have been stroking it around without really

threatening the Fulham goal. Fulham started to move forward, and with

their first chance of the match, they have scored. There goes Steve

Sidwell, nobody with him. And he does the rest, for his seventh Goal

of the Season. Really well taken. No chance, de Gea, Manchester United

are behind. No reaction from Rene Meulensteen to his team taking the

lead. Plenty of chuntering going on in those seats, though. Tunnicliffe

makes a run. Patrice Evra. Manchester United trying to hit

back, with extra urgency now, moving a little more quickly. Van Persie

just Mata leaves it to Rafael. Rafael! And van Persie has ballooned

it. It is a Miss, actually. It was tough, on the volley, but you would

expect him to do better than that. In goes Burn, then Richardson.

Carrick drove it straight at Sidwell. Stekelenburg does not come

for it, has to save it. Wayne Rooney into the mix. Cleared by Heitinga.

18 minutes of the first half to go, then another 45. Fulham cannot carry

on like this for ever. Corner to Manchester United. Rene

Meulensteen revealed this week that Sir Alex Ferguson was the first man

to reassure him, with his team struggling at the moment, sane,

stick to your beliefs. Tankovic on the ball... Look at Kieran

Richardson. Tankovic has found him! Richardson has sky it! What a chance

on the counterattack for Fulham to make it two. It started from a

Manchester United corner. Look at Richardson, covering the ground.

Tankovic had options, he did nothing wrong. Richardson could have played

it across goal. He saw the bright lights.

Here is Rafael. Sidwell heads away. Carrick. Back in by Young. Dan Burn

clears. In goes Carrick! Van Persie! And it is deflected behind. Carrick

and van Persie, well, neither could find a path to goal. Out to Young.

Loads of room for him. Goodness me, what a risk John Arne Riise took

there. I think he was trying to chest it down to Stekelenburg, but

it has bounced off his chest and gone over the crossbar.

Another counter before half-time. Richardson, threatening to leave

Vidic behind. But Rooney was tracking back this time. Never mind

Manchester United's mission to finish fourth, what will this do to

Fulham's efforts to avoid the drop to the Championship? Away by

Stekelenburg. Rooney! Great save, what a save from the Dutch 'keeper.

Rooney felt sure he had scored the equaliser.

Back come Manchester United. Van Persie. He claims handball. Kevin

Friend did not see anything. Dan Burn is going in, was it handball?

Hard to tell from that. Evra has got it in, Januzaj missed

it! Turned in by Mata! Van Persie! Manchester United are level. The

siege has been rewarded. No great celebrations, and now, they are just

hell-bent on winning the contest. Fulham's defiance, finally broken.

Not before John Arne Riise had flung himself in the path of the ball

again. Shot after shot after shot, and eventually, it has got to go in.

Three in 34 van Persie since his comeback from injury. What relief

for the Manchester United manager. 11 minutes to go. Up goes van

Persie. Januzaj. Stekelenburg runs across

the face. It comes back to Michael Carrick. And it is in! Almost in the

blink of an eye, Manchester United have turned it around! If anything,

once level, they only ramped up the intensity. Carrick had time to set

himself. There is a big deflection on it, as Fulham bodies pile in

again in a desperate bid to stop the shot. Away from Stekelenburg, into

the corner. And from 1-0 down, in less than two minutes, Manchester

United have scored twice. You could hear him roar above the thousands.

Less than 90 seconds in between the two Manchester United goals. Holtby,

deflected. It's nearly came to Sidwell. Vidic headed it away.

Valencia. He has van Persie and Hernandez ahead of him. Valencia

tries to do it by himself for a moment. Mata with the effort!

Stekelenburg was beaten but it went wide. Manchester United almost

giving Fulham a taste of their own medicine, with a counterattack. He

is still managing to smile, Ray Wilkins as well. What else can you

do? They brought 13 herewith a plan, and it was just about working.

Vidic. Sidwell wins the ball. Richardson! Bent! It is in. Fulham

have levelled. An incredible ending! David de Gea could not hold the shot

by Richardson, and Aaron Bent has popped up to score. This could be a

massive point for Fulham, and a huge two more dropped at home for

Manchester United. Carrick wanted a free kick. In came Sidwell. It was

too hot for de Gea to handle, and there was Darren Bent. He sensed the

chance and it came to him. There is something for Fulham to celebrate,

big-time. The feeling at Old Trafford is that

of a home defeat, although it has ended all square, in the most

extraordinary circumstances. It is one point, but it looked like

three. I did not see it as struggling at over the line, but we

kept defending well. The Manchester United game plan was

straightforward, get it wide, get it in, a lot of early crosses, and I

thought we defended well. Today was as bad as it gets. Today we

dominated the game completely. Being 1-0 down was bad enough, although it

could have been two at one point. But the amount of chances, the play

we had, how we didn't win comfortably, I've no idea. We said

before we came out that we have to believe. You have to believe coming

at the dressing room that you come away with a minimum of one point,

and hopefully that can be a platform to build on the rest of games. Has

he surprised you how good he is going forward? That's one of his

strengths, his timing is so good. That is something we want to utilise

more but it requires a certain style of play. Being very adventurous in

the beginning of time I took over has proved with some good

performances but no results, so we need a balance. It is tough to take,

but we are here at this great club, and we expect high things, and we

think it will come round again. Do you think you are just on one at the

moment? We feel like we have been on one of the six months at the

moment. I think the way to prove this is to look at the average touch

map. Over the course of the 90 minutes there isn't wonderful player

in the attacking half. But that should highlight how good they were

defensively -- macro-group temp one player. They lost -- Fulham player.

They lost in the FA Cup, and if you go to Old Trafford, you don't think

you will go for it, they sit there and counterattack they did it

brilliantly. Two goals, two other chances on the counterattack. That

highlight United's defensive frailties? I think it did. It was a

catalogue of errors from the United defence, especially through the

spine of the team. I will show you from the defensive midfielder 's

point of view. Sidwell, good position, Rooney is

decent, but Fletcher sees Sidwell running on and he thinks Rooney has

got him. But he passes it to Fletcher there. Juan Mata steps out

of the hole, and I don't know why he does it. It's a wide-open space for

Sidwell to score. Tankovic makes a good run and I think he gets a bit

obsessed. He's looking only at them. At this point, if you put an

imaginary line down the pitch, you would not want to leave the space

behind you. Evra should be across, and he is not. You just switches

off. He can save the day for his team but he allows the ball in, and

Holtby edges it in. Sidwell does the rest. It's just not good enough.

This should have been 2-0. It should be Fletcher on the edge of the box.

They break, and Rooney, he knows he will be in the full race with

Richardson. Look at Vidic and Juan Mata trying to get back. Not dynamic

and. Great pass from Tankovic and it should be 2-0. Another free kick,

and desperate times. Vidic has to make contact. He has to make some

sort of challenge. Richardson's place was phenomenal. A willing

runner, and in the end Rooney gets back. This is the equaliser, Carrick

should put it on. Valencia is appealing for the foul. The right

weight of pass from Sidwell, who was magnificent. Four against four after

90 minutes at Old Trafford. Good David De Gea do better, I'm not

sure. -- could David De Gea do better? He could headed down,

Vidic, but it is a 50/50. David De Gea I think could do better. Bent

punishes them again in the last minute. What you are both saying is,

it's not one big mistake for a goal or for a chance, there are several

individual mistakes. You defend as a team, it is a unit, its

communication between the compartments. When they went one

goal down, they were chasing and they did not set up properly. You

need a balance. Rene Meulensteen said he knew how United would play,

get it wide, and get it in early. David Moyes denied that was the only

way United play. I don't think it was ever one way.

If you look at the stats, the crosses, the passes, I don't think

we just went and crossed the ball. A lot of people would say that one of

the big things that Manchester United do is that they play with wit

and crossed the ball. It is in the genes. -- with wit. They had 81

crosses today. The problem was half of them weren't good enough. The

majority of times, they did not get past the first man. The other thing

was, and we did the pitch map, so you know that for -- Fulham will

have loads of bodies in the box. It's nearly always six against three

from Manchester United. Unless the ball is absolutely accurate, Fulham

will have the chance to win it and it's what they did. Even when

Manchester United got it in there, Fulham were at them. All of a sudden

Manchester United have made substitutions and they start to get

bodies in there. They made it more difficult for Fulham. Lo and behold,

they get the goals. Every time you went to Manchester united they had

everybody in the box all the time. It was a real serious examination. I

thought Manchester United made it a little bit too easy for Fulham. But

they won't go into every game with Hernandez, Van Persie, Rooney, Juan

Mata, Janet jazz jazz jam is as, so have they lost the ability to attack

through the mill -- Zanuzaj 's. It is predictable, if you compare them

to Chelsea, is -- you see them go through the middle, or out wide,

they can be forced wide, and they kept crossing the ball. It was too

predictable. You pointed out in the office, two or three times, Juan

Mata dropped the ball. He's only played three games and it's

difficult to get him in, but as Martin says, they haven't got those

players between the lines. Rooney was right up front. Normally he

drops off and you can play off him, but it didn't happen. Fulham have

Liverpool at Craven Cottage at the weekend. Can they defend like that?

Can the strategy work against all teams? Rene Meulensteen said in his

press conference that they've attacked teams and got punished. I

think at home, the onus is on you to go and attack. Do that against

Liverpool, with soirees and storage... -- Luis Suarez and Daniel

Sturridge. If you'd said you could go and get a point against

Manchester United and Liverpool, you would snap their hand. Spurs against

Everton, after you get the chance to decide January's goal of the month.

Kolarov takes it away from Routledge. Toure ahead. Jacko on the

other side. -- Dzeko on the other side. He might not need any of

them. He doesn't. Toure making the little run, Dzeko to his right, but

Kolarov deciding to go for glory himself. And glory is what he found.

Hazard, shooting chance for him, and another, and he has scored. Thought

he was going to shoot first time and Alex Bruce bought it, and that set

Hazard up with a better position to shoot.

Barry in support. He might fancy ago. He does! What a hit from Gareth

Barry. There was no stopping that one.

Last minute of the first half. Charlie Adam!

What a strike. Well, there was no stopping this one. Through the legs

of Skrtel. No chance for mini lay. -- Mignolet.

Johnson. This is positive. Adam Johnson! From two goals down to 2-2.

And he drove that past Boruc. Santi Cazorla. Giroud. Cazorla! 1-0.

Finally Arsenal breakthrough. An intricate one touch triangle

football finally prises open the Fulham defence. Toure onside.

Well, Luis Suarez has scored some extraordinary goals this season. And

that is up there from Daniel Sturridge.

Young against Macnaughton. Still Ashley Young. Will he have a go? He

is! Tremendous strike from Ashley Young. A little drop of the

shoulder, saw the opportunity, and a really clean strike. Brunt with the

strop -- strike. It's an absolutely brilliant strike from Chris Brunt.

Perfectly placed into the far corner by Chris Brunt.

Westwood picking up Benteke. Away from Steven Reid. An absolute

screamer. What a piledriver from Fabien Delph! He just turns away

from Steven Reid and then unleashes an absolute howitzer.

Right, next to White Hart Lane where Steve Wilson watched Spurs take on

Everton. If anything Liverpool's win over

Arsenal has only helped up the anti-for Spurs and Everton today.

Defeat would leave either as real outsiders in the race for fourth

place and a draw might not suit much either. Victory has to be the

objective. Tim Sherwood leaves 4-4-2 for another day replacing salt Sardo

with Dembele, who is fit after an ankle injury -- Soldado. Everton

make three changes. They welcome back the dynamic Seamus Coleman from

a hamstring injury. Steven Naismith returns, as does Steven Pienaar who

never quite showed Spurs what he was capable of in his brief spell there.

Traore, he's on the Everton bench. Interesting to see Steven Naismith

at the top of the formation. Kevin Mirallas is capable of playing

there, but that is where Naismith has started. He scored for Roberto

Martinez in the comeback victory over Aston Villa and got a couple of

goals in the FA Cup win at Stevenage. Coleman. Osmond turning

away from Bentaleb. Looks for Coleman, doesn't quite get enough of

it. Osman dragged it on his left foot, away from Bentaleb. There was

a little window of opportunity there but it did not go over him. Lovely

piece of plates from Lyon Osman. -- piece of play. Everton have taken as

many points away as Spurs have taken a home. Kevin Mirallas with room to

come into. Pienaar and Naismith forward. Osman arriving. Roses

across as well. Corner. -- Rose 's cross. Pressure on Hugo Lloris.

Headed away by Bentaleb but only to McCarthy. Good play.

Osman, and a good save by Hugo Lloris. Really terrific save from

the Frenchman because Osman headed beautifully. Good awareness from

Pakistan -- just in Distin. -- mirabilis with a corner kick. The

goalkick has been given. -- Kevin Moranis with a corner kick. Just in

front of Adebayor. What about this for a save -- Kevin Mirallas. Great

stop. We've played seven and a half minute and Leon Osman has had three

chances to score. The curler, the shot saved, and a

header from the resulting corner. Naismith beat Vertonghen. Osman

cannot believe it. We have not played eight minutes yet and it's

the fourth time he might have scored Everton. Terrific play by Naismith

again. But it is too central from Osman and comfortable for Hugo

Lloris. No wonder Tim Sherwood got out of his seat.

Free kick is given for the foul on Paulinho. Kyle Walker was in all

kinds of space. The foul might allow Christian Eriksen a chance to have a

go for goal. And that was a decent effort. It had Tim Howard

scrambling, and one or two behind his goal, wondering whether it was

not going to drop in. Roy Hodgson here today. He has used 31 different

players this season. He used 41 last season, and Gareth Barry has not

been one of them. At the bio -- Adebayor in the middle. The

forgotten man under AVB was nearly the main man once again under Tim

Sherwood. Lovely ball in by Danny Rose. Had Adebayor scored here,

Everton might have wondered whether he might have been offside. But he

did not make contact. Tim Howard has not had to make a save in the first

half. Tim Sherwood will be looking for an improvement in that regard in

the second half. Paulinho pings it to Walker. Danger here. Eriksen in

the middle! Corner kick. Lovely ball from Paulinho. And suddenly there

was acres of space. Leighton Baines did well. Eriksen takes it. Free

header, Dawson! What happened there? I am not sure what happened to the

marking. It was a bit of a let off for Everton. McCarthy. McCarthy in

quickly. Mirallas has got their ahead of Vertonghen. Naismith in

support! Still going, over the top of the crossbar. Naismith turns and

screams at Kevin Mirallas, who had two or three opportunities to play

the Scotsman in. But three times he was ignored. These two finished

fifth and sixth last season, and they are fifth and sixth again at

the moment. Jagielka with the header, corner to Tottenham. Eriksen

corner delivery. Adebayor's header! That was a real chance. He climbed

well. Just perhaps did not get over it quite enough.

Osman. Dembele. Naismith was too strong. Free kick. Taken to

Adebayor. Adebayor! First shot on target in the entire game for

Tottenham Hotspur, and they take the lead! Emmanuel Adebayor takes the

salute. It was a quickly taken free kick, Everton were napping. I think

he was just onside, played on by Distin. Tim Howard, beaten by the

power of the shot. A bit of quick thinking from Walker with the free

kick, and it was a really good finish. Tottenham lead with 25

minutes to go. The man who Tim Sherwood restored from the murky

shadows of White Hart Lane has rewarded him with his seventh Goal

of the Season. Dembele. Adebayor. Tim Howard seemed confident enough

that it was heading wide and over, and it did in the end. It could be a

big, big victory, but a hard defeat for one of them to take. Tottenham

have not won this yet. We are into a minimum of three added minutes.

Coleman. Six in the middle just he goes down. Nothing doing. Ross

Barkley. Still Barkley. And still going. Rose comes across, strong

challenge, throw to Everton. But they thought they might have had a

penalty here. He skipped away from Rose, Capoue came in to make the

challenge, and Mark Clattenburg had a great view of it and decided not.

Time is almost up. Still probing, still hoping, still passing. Ross

Barkley has lost it to away. Here is Adebayor. Now, Jermaine Defoe. Tim

Howard makes the save. But it is a corner to Tottenham. And that might

be enough to see them over the line. Jermaine Defoe would have sealed it

if he had scored. But it should be over by now anyway. Time is almost

up. There is the whistle, and it is a victory Tottenham needed. Emmanuel

Adebayor, with his seventh goal since Tim Sherwood decided to bring

him in from the cold, and the big man rewards him again. Everton might

feel that defeat is a little harsh on them, but it is a big win for

Spurs. They go above Everton in the table. Hugo Lloris as in the game

early on. We are very slow starters. But we got some

information into them at half-time, and we turned it around. They never

had a shot in the second half. What is your style for getting

information into them?! Relaxed. For some reason, we were standing off

them, and if you do that, they are going to open you up, and that is

what they did. In the first half, we were by a mile we did not look like

the away team. Had a real threat going forward. First goal was

obviously important. But also, we defended really, really well. To

switch off in one action from a dead ball situations, that is a harsh way

to lose a football game. Do you see it now that it might go into the

last couple of games, four teams still in with a shout of fourth

place? Absolutely, it is going down to the wire. We have leapfrogged

Everton today and we are chasing Liverpool. We are competing for the

same aim, very close in the league, and judging by the performance, you

feel that we are stronger going into the final 13 games. So, we need to

make sure that we take this into our development and into our process, to

make sure that we will get the points that we deserve from now

until the end of the season. Both managers agreed that Spurs were slow

out of the blocks in the first half, and Everton spurned several

chances, and that it will be. The problem for them was that all of the

chances came in that very early spell. With Lukaku not available,

Naismith played as the front man, with Osman behind him. Osman was

terrific in that early spell, he had so many opportunities. Great

strike, a bit like the one swallows scored against Norwich. -- Luis

Suarez. He looked like, as Roberto Martinez said, if Everton had scored

in that period, they would have won easily. The great thing for

Tottenham was that they did not play particularly well, and they managed

to get three points. Again, Osman was central to everything. They had

shot after shot in the first half, Spurs got their first shot on target

in the second half, and that was the deciding moment. Martinez is right,

too many experienced players switched off. You go back to Man

United, a catalogue of errors, and it was the same here. I think this

was a foul on Osman. They were lucky that was not given. Watch Gareth

Barry, he tries to roll the ball back. Now, Naismith, he has put his

arms in the air. Osman, he holds his head. They all turn their back.

Adebayor points where he wants it to go. Jagielka has got his back

turned, he is playing him onside. So many errors. That goal could be so

easily stopped. It was poor play. They all switched off. Credit to

Walker, he has seen it and played it. We credit Adebayor as well, for

the power under strength to bring it down? Adebayor has been a sensation

since Tim Sherwood has put him in the side. That is his sixth goal

from ten appearances, he looks awesome at times. He does not need

to be in good form, he gets a chance, and he has buried it. Gareth

Barry had to stand in front of the ball, or kick the ball away. Or

cheating? No, gamesmanship. Lets some may say naive, never mind

honestly. OK, you are the three experienced professionals. Some

would say old! Anyway, take us through what you think might have

been a penalty. I thought Everton were very, very unlucky I think that

is a stonewall penalty. Look at this angle. His shin catches him, it is a

penalty! He has gone over his leg! I do not believe it is. I have watched

Robbie watching 30 replays of that. So, why does he not book him? I

think he was on his way to slipping, which is why the referee did not

give a penalty. How much of an influence does this have on the race

for fourth, or are Liverpool so impressive that they will get

fourth? We say they are even in the title race. Yes, they are so

impressive, Liverpool. Suarez and Sturridge and could are the best

front three of all of those teams who are fighting for fourth. I think

if Liverpool keep them fit, they will finish fourth. With Lukaku not

available, Jelavic being allowed to leave to balance the books, in that

final third, they are just lacking. For me, the way they lost to

Liverpool recently as well, that was a hammer blow to their prospects to

finishing in the top four. We will see Liverpool's win over Arsenal

shortly, but if we are saying they are in the race for the title, then

you would assume those top four will stay the same united can rule

themselves out. Liverpool, in their current form, I think they will

finish fourth. Of the four teams we have seen today, only Everton have

probably had a regular centre back pairing this season. As that shown

for you? Of all four, it is ironic that they are in a losing team

today, but they are probably the best two. Sylvain Distin,

particularly. He has made a living out of this. He is strong,

uncompromising, does not take any risks. He is really difficult to get

past. He just finds touch. But this fella, Jagielka, very clever, the

way he stands up against a quicker man, Lennon. He waits for his

opportunity and takes it off him. It is the way that he marshals that

defence. It is first class. Comes away from Adebayor, mix the tackle,

first class. The this, he is in line, he can see the danger on the

edge of the box he decides to come out, and quickly gets back to that

line, making sure there are. It is the way that he reads the game as

well. Look at this one. Interception, no problem just but he

switches off, this is criminal. You cannot turn your back on the ball.

You have got to credit Kyle Walker. When he sees his number, he just

wants to play a little pitching wedge into that area. The execution

of this, by the way, great run from Adebayor. He has got a lot to do. He

is ruthless. And that is what it is when you play at the top level, you

cannot switch off. When you have a regular partnership, you know what

your partner is going to do. And the two of them are pessimists, which

you need to be, if you are a defender, you have got to expect

your partner is going to miss the ball. The results of Goal of the

Month coming up later. But we begin yesterday's action, starting with

that amazing game at Anfield. 30 seconds into the match, Michael

Oliver gives Steven Gerrard the chance to put the ball in, and he

normally does well, and it into the net. Liverpool have scored. The

goalkeeper who has kept the most clean sheets in the Premier league

this season is briefed on already. -- beaten already. Skrtel again!

Skrtel scores again. Liverpool two, Arsenal zero and we have not played

ten minutes. Arsenal undone by set pieces. Henderson away with it. Look

at Raheem Sterling. Henderson didn't, but it will come to him

anyway. He makes it free! Arsenal's players look shocked -- makes it

free. -- three. Ozil. Through for Daniel Sturridge. He is

onto it. Four! An embarrassing first 20 minutes of Arsenal, dream for

Brendan Rodgers and co-. . Storage -- storage -- Sterling has two, and

any thoughts of the comeback is over. Oxlade-Chamberlain comes in,

doesn't get there. A chance to at least get Arsenal on the board. And

Arteta does. The goal is celebrated by those fans still in the ground as

though it is one that has just won them the points.

Negredo, off the bar. Manchester City very nearly open the scoring.

Redmond draws him in. Is this a famous moment? Goodness me. Behind.

And behind Pilkington. Norwich should have won it in the end.

Lampard. Hazard. Beats Santon. Ivanovic. Eden Hazard, 1-0.

Brilliant from Eden Hazard. He finished it brilliantly.

Hazard. Brilliant. What a goal! What a goal by Eden Hazard. That is

sensational. The referee has given a penalty.

Samuel at went over in the penalty area -- Samuel Eto'o. 3-0. Eden

Hazard with a hat-trick. A week ago this was Manchester

City's title to lose, but now we are saying it is a four horse race, and

I promised I wouldn't say horse, for club race. I still think it is

Manchester City's to lose. Chelsea were great on Monday and City

weren't good yesterday, but that's just two games. You think it is

Chelsea's Toulouse. They have nine of the bottom 11 teams to play, and

that performance in midweek against Manchester City was outstanding. I
