Welcome to Match Of The Day 2. Yesterday concentrated attention on

the bottom half of the table but this evening would towards the top.

Manchester City and Newcastle to come after Liverpool tried to solve

the riddle of the Britannia. 17 point separator these two, and

when Liverpool player has scored more goals this season than the

entire Stoke team. -- one Liverpool player. An away win would seem

elementary. But this conclusion discount crucial evidence. Liverpool

have never won a Premier League match at the Britannia Stadium. The

last three meetings all ended in clear victory for the hosts. With no

league win at Stoke since Martin 84, -- 1984, this is perhaps the away

fixture Liverpool fear the most. Liverpool have been stalking the top

for all season. A win today takes them back there. They visit a scene

where Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton have all tried and failed to

take three points this season. Stoke are without Assaidi, on loan from

Liverpool, used in legible -- he is ineligible. There is a debut for

Butland in gold. Crouch and Adam face their former club. Only the

seventh player to reach 350 appearances for Liverpool, Steven

Gerrard. A recall for Kolo Toure, and Daniel Sturridge is back among

the substitutes. Another Liverpool milestone for

Steven Gerrard today. Cissokho! It is cruel on Stoke. A

wicked deflection. Jack Butland got no chance. Initially it looked as if

Raheem Sterling had the opportunity to shoot there. It came back out to

Cissokho, it struck the captain, Ryan Shawcross, totally deceived

Butland and Liverpool lead. It was heading way off target. Shawcross

with the own goal. A tough one for him and his team to

take. Suarez! Butland came flying out, he

looked nervously towards Anthony Taylor.

Suarez couldn't make any contact. Stoke survived.

His team have beaten in only five of the last 28 Premier League matches.

Suarez has taken the gift! Two - zero Liverpool, goal number 21 of

the season from Luis Suarez. It is certainly one that Stoke could have

avoided. You cannot do that when he is around. A huge, hopeful ball

upfield, he puts Wilson under pressure, not a very good touch from

Shawcross. And Suarez, gleefully accepted the situation. One of the

more simple strikes of the season for him. 34 goals in his last 33

Premier League matches, and Brendan Rodgers's team are in front. Already

a long way back for Mark Hughes's side.

Peter Crouch with a header! Stoke, back in it! Peter Crouch, against

his former club, his fourth Premier League goal of the season, six

minutes before half-time, reduces the deficit. The first ball of

inequality that has been delivered into the penalty area. Crouch got

away from Kolo Toure and steered it past Mignolet. It's the third time

he has scored against his former club in his career, and it's an

important goal for his current club, Stoke needed that. Peter Crouch once

cost ?7 million, he played in the Champions' League final for

Liverpool. Great save by Butland and a terrific

challenge by Ryan Shawcross to prevent Coutinho getting the and

putting it home. Shawcross in, in the nick of time.

Charlie Adam! What a strike! From two down, back to 2-2, on the stroke

of half-time, and another former Liverpool man finds the back of the

net. There was no stopping this one. I'm tidy from Liverpool's point of

view. Adam got back on his feet, and that is a sweet strike to fly past

Mignolet. His six of the season. Stoke's top scorer pops up with

another one. Last minute of the first half.

Raheem Sterling goes down and the referee says penalty. We had an

extraordinary start to the first half, and there is a repeat in the

second. Was there a use of a hand from Raheem Sterling? It has

resulted in the award of a penalty. He went to ground, this was the

referee's view of all that. It is drilled at pace at Stirling, in

fairness. He touches him, he immediately points to the spot.

Steven Gerrard calmly restores Liverpool's lead. They are back in

front. Ice cool from the Liverpool skipper. He sends Butland the wrong

way. It is going to be a yellow card for

Cissokho, a free kick right on the edge of the penalty area. It was

rash, it was a foul and it was outside the box.

It's all happening in this match! It was grilled at Suarez. You are never

going to get a penalty for that. This is where Stoke have to be wary.

Suarez! What a fine finish! It restores Liverpool's 2-goal cushion.

Suarez, with his second and Liverpool's fourth, might just put

it on your own Stoke. Sturridge and Suarez, linking up instantly as soon

as they are reunited. Really clever play from Sturridge. And what a

clinical finish from Suarez. Curled it into the bottom corner. Goal

number 22 of this incredible season for the Uruguayan.

If this had gone in, it would have been an interesting finish. Good

work from Crouch initially. Good reaction from Mignolet.

Maybe, just maybe! Six minutes to go, Stoke three, Liverpool four.

Liverpool lost possession, Arnautovic with the ball, and the

lifelong Evertonians Jonathan Waters manages to beat Simon Mignolet. Only

the second time in 24 games that Jonathan Waters has found the back

of the net, it sets up the grandstand finish.

Can they see this out or settle it? Sturridge! What a save by Butland,

that should do it! 5-3, Daniel Sturridge, back with the goal that

seals the three points Liverpool. Extraordinary game. And one now that

Liverpool have won. Once again, it was Sturridge and Suarez in tandem.

Butland did brilliantly initially to keep that the Liverpool substitute,

who reacted and then rolled in his 10th league goal of the season. He

has settled this memorable match at the Britannia Stadium.

After post! Goodness me! -- off the post! And there are four more

minutes to add on. If that had gone in, they would have been a tense

four minutes. And it was almost an own goal! A

fantastic save from Mignolet, unbelievable reactions.

I said at half-time, it was a perfect away performance at a

notoriously difficult ground but we went to sleep, maybe thought it was

too easy and all of a sudden, they equalised, so the players now have

to win the game in 45 minutes, going be offensive and have a positive

mind again, cut out the mistakes. We know we have the firepower to score.

We thought we'd get our noses in front, but the penalty decision was

key, it allowed the game to swing back to them. We thought initially

it was a handball in the Ladbroke, Raheem Sterling has gone down very

easily in the box, in our opinion. The referee has for that. We have to

pick ourselves up. I was far away in this new role, the holding role, but

Raheem Sterling is an honest lad, he wouldn't have gone down otherwise. A

mental game, lots of chances, we offer straight it not to come away

with anything, they are fantastic going forward but we help them out

with a couple of sloppy areas, you can't do that against a top team.

You set one up for Luis Suarez, and he did for you, you clicked

instantly. There is no doubt, we have a connection on the field, it's

about the team, it's more important that the team picks up the three

points, I am delighted to be out there and he has been doing

extremely well also. It's a great feeling to be part of such a

partnership. Look at that duo, they buried Stoke, Liverpool, 51 in 21,

which had equalled their top-flight record. Their strikeforce is

phenomenal. Sturridge came in and scored the

goals. He has been injured, Suarez has stepped up. It is a

partnership. Fantastic. When you have players who score goals, you

will be dangerous. Let us look at the incident which annoyed Mark

Hughes the most. Did they have a point on the handball?

Most definitely, it is handball. I am not sure what the referee saw. He

doesn't think it is handball. Players know Sterling handled it. I

don't think that is a penalty at all. Brendan Rodgers called it soft

and described it as what he called a Spanish penalty.

It is a very soft one, from the referee's angle, you can see why he

gave it. Sterling fell to the floor, he is not appealing, he looks back

in hope. It should have been handball, simple as that. That was

the turning point. Onto the duo, both of them have done

well individually this season without the other one, but they are

back together. When they are together, they are fantastic.

They have this understanding, seeming to know where each other is.

A massive plus they are back together. They look for each other

all the time. They seem to have understanding. Suarez made a little

run, storage knows roughly where he is. -- Sturridge.

They do come demented each other. The thing about Suarez, he will take

his position. The great bonus for Liverpool is they can both score

when they are playing on their own. This is a great ball in as well from

Suarez. They are together, they are happy,

thumbs up. There was always the issue, they were a little bit

selfish. When the other one goes...

I only think you get that when they have both scored. And when they are

playing well. There is definitely a respect between them. I think there

is. Both wanted the limelight. But Suarez is a much more intelligent

player. He can play in three different positions and is happy to

adjust his play. That is what happened when they first signed

Daniel Sturridge. For all that we have praised the

ball, Stoke did not help themselves. They were terrible at

times. The ball away unnecessarily under no real pressure.

Trying to head the ball back. Shawcross does not cover himself

with glory. They're crossing at times, their decision making, was

terrible. Charlie Adam, that is not what he

does. He comes inside and runs into bodies. They did that a lot.

Especially in the first half. They kept on doing it. Until, suddenly,

that happened. Four players against three in the box. The first decent

ball into the box, Peter Crouch got a header. That seemed to give them

belief. From then on, the crosses were better into the box, they had

chances. In the end, they almost got it back. And very nearly 5-4 and

gave Liverpool a scare. For the majority of the game, the

decision-making was very poor. It is strange. They have had a good record

at home. And generally against Liverpool. Peter Crouch, his headed

goal was the first this season. What you saw in that first half until

then, does that show there is a lack of confidence when it comes to

getting the ball in the box? In a lot of those clips, you can argue it

was only himself in the box. Mark Hughes is trying to change the

style and thinking what is the point of sticking it in there unless it is

a goal-scoring opportunity. The game from St James' Park is

him, that is a beauty. Suarez, a good effort! Oh, that is

Premier League goal for Aston Villa. And you do not strike a ball better

than that. Lallana, a lovely header to Davies.

Danny Osvaldo. He might turn inside, twice, still Danny Osvaldo three

times, what a goal! That is absolutely brilliant. Inch perfect.

Over the top of the goalkeeper who is six, remember. That is a special

moment. Now, it is Ireland who has the ball.

Assaidi wants it. Crouch is well bored, working hard to stay onside.

Assaidi, what a goal! What a winner. Just look at that as he cuts

inside. What a finish. Lallana, onto Rodriguez, David to

his right hand side. The giver Davies, back into Rodriguez. What a

great counter attacking goal. Counter attacks do not come much

better than that. And everything about that counter was perfect.

Elmander. Hooper, what an astonishing goal from Gary Hooper!

It is set up very nicely indeed for Hooper. How about that for a strike.

The Dwight Gayle is forward, he hears, on one. Gayle! Oh, what a

goal. The Dwight Gayle settles it. That has quality stamped all over

it. Coleman. Always willing to offer

some width down the right-hand side. Still with Coleman, a good, powerful

one. Oh, that is absolutely stunning. Goal number five.

So, to St James Park, and the question of how to stop Manchester

City scoring would puzzle the greatest of minds.

Change comes quickly in football. Back in November, Alan Pardew was

Manager of the Month. Four straight wins then could become four straight

defeats today. And the visitors are Manchester City, whose away form was

once a mystery, but not anymore. Manchester City commit a dreadful

mistake! What a strike. Manuel Pellegrini appears to have

closed that case, and City are on a charge, unbeaten in 14, 12 of them

wins. Will their run continue, or will Newcastle find their November

form? The game is afoot. Where football and drama come

together, you will often find Newcastle United. Once upon a time,

Manchester City, but they have moved on to the thriller section.

Newcastle show for changes. Returning to the side are Krul,

Williamson, Cabaye, after injury worries. Santon as well. The

visitors are also different, with their own League Cup hammering. Joe

Hart, Demichelis, Kolarov and Fernandinho are back.

Torre, freshly back from a whistle stop tour to Nigeria where he picked

up the African Footballer Of The Year award. I am sure it was a

little bit warmer in Lagos and Tyneside today.

Kolarov stormed in, Dzeko fires in. Manchester City in front seven and a

half minutes in. Brilliant run from Aleksandar Kolarov. He was ambling

at that point. Now he goes. The pass is threaded through perfectly. The

ball in for Djeko. Scoring his 13th goal of the season. Newcastle United

zero, Manchester City one. Serbian and Bosnian laugh! -- love!

Fernandinho couldn't stop him. Kompany crop -- cut at the cross.

Here they go again. Kolarov down the left. Djeko ahead of him. Kolarov.

And an inch or so away from making it 2.

I think it was a decent enough advantage play.

What a save by Joe Hart! Cabaye is onside. That might well have been

going in. Tiote, with a blast into the blue!

Now Manchester city are going across to the assistant referee. They are

claiming offside here. No goal! No goal! The flag is up! Alan Pardew

has a smile but it is one of disbelief. Gouffran is standing

offside. How on earth is he interfering with Joe Hart? I suppose

there is another player offside as well. Gouffran gets out of the way

of it. Doesn't touch it. Gets out of the way of it. I am not sure how

that can be classed as interfering. But no goal. An absolute stunner

from Tiote will count for nothing. What a moment of controversy.

Another decision has gone to Manchester City, it's a free kick.

Newcastle's players are going to the referee. You have to feel for

Tiote, you really have to. The smile has gone now. Absolutely livid.

Absolutely wide, and not by much from Silva. All you can hear is the

booing of the earlier decision to rule out Tiote's won the gold. No

Newcastle player touches the ball, they are not in Joe Hart's line of

sight. Maybe he doesn't dive because he sees Gouffran. Alan Pardew, being

kept apart from Pellegrini by the fourth official here. Half-time,

listen to this. CROWD BOOS. Alan Pardew is waiting for him.

Linesmen is right, you are wrong. Negredo is bundled to the floor by

Williamson, that will be a free kick.

And Krul denies Negredo. The strength from Negredo was admirable.

A little hot under the collar, Alan. Yaya Toure on Tiote, the two tough

Ivory Coast midfielders have been at each other for a while now.

Cabaye when the goal, and Joe Hart is waiting for it. -- went for gold.

Well struck by Cabaye, it was curling inside the post.

Santon was towed back by Czar by letter just outside the penalty

area. -- 's Abba letter. Joe Hart got both hands to it. That

is more like the usual order from Tiote. That one might have missed

three goals! One of the more relaxed people inside the ground.

It broke to Loic Remy, great save by Joe Hart, that is a stop! This is a

marvellous piece of goalkeeping. Back in the side, and it looks as

though he will be back to stay. Like Remi hit it as well as he could have

done, really, didn't quite get it a crust -- across Joe Hart.

Advantage to mentor to city, it didn't really develop. -- to

Manchester City. Nasri is hurt. It's going to be a yellow card to

Yanga-Mbiwa. What of semi-Nasri? He doesn't half take him out! It is a

swipe! Let us hope that is not as bad as that site suggests it is.

He went down easily come as Santon was alongside him.

If Cabaye runs out of steam, then Newcastle have had it.

Stephen Taylor just kept out Negredo's rolled towards goal.

Newcastle fans, not so much praying is hand warming.

Negredo gets lucky but scores the second! And Newcastle can't stop

Manchester City from going to the top of the Barclays Premier League.

Negredo has a look, no flag, he didn't need to look for Jesus never

has, he has a touch of good fortune, and he wasn't adjusted in anybody's

coring but himself. Number 19 of the season. -- wasn't interested in

anybody's scoring but himself. We won in probably a different way

than we used to, that is how you need to play when you play on the

road. I am happy for many reasons, but the three points are the most

important ones. It was a good performance from us. We are in an

entertainment business here, the guy has hit a wonder goal, and Joe Hart

is never going to save it. I have seen the referee, I'm not really

thrilled with his answer. The technical side of that was Joe

Hart's vision impaired, and it wasn't. It goes through Manchester

City bodies, not our player, he's completely irrelevant, coming back

from play. It goes on the inside of him. It's a massive call. From what

I saw on the pitch, there were a lot of bodies everywhere, I wouldn't

have been surprised if for that reason the gall -- goal was called

off, but having said that, Newcastle were really good today and we did

our job. Can you understand their frustration about the disallowed

goal? There was a player offside and the disturbed Joe Hart. The law of

offside is very simple. I don't know what is simpler! You

can only vote once for goal of the month, by the way. As far as

offside, you are offside if you are interfering with play or an

opponent, and interfering with an opponent can mean clearly

obstructing their line of vision. With that said, take us through it.

None of those apply, simple as that. The referee has got it wrong. We see

it at full pace, decent defensive header, Tiote is a magnificent hit,

superb strike. Deconstruct it for us. There are three Newcastle

players possibly in an offside position but they are not

interfering with play, they don't touch the ball, they are not in Joe

Hart's line of sight. He puts his hand up after the ball went in, he

didn't even dive. The crucial part for me is the linesmen on the far

side doesn't raise his flag, he doesn't think those players are

interfering with play although they are in an offside position. There is

obviously some dialogue between the referee and the players, they start

to go over. The only players blocking his line of sight are three

Manchester City players, that has nothing to do with it. You see

Gouffran circled, he is outside the line of the goal, he is close to the

ball, but not interfering with Joe Hart, not in the line of the ball,

and I can't understand why the referee has gone across. If the

linesmen had put his flag up, fair enough. I think there is an element

of doubt straightaway, he is thinking, have I got this right if I

give a goal? That is what he goes over. The ball is in the net before

he realises. Joe Hart is looking round. That is worse this shampoo

adverts, he doesn't believe it! He can't see, because the manager to

city players are in the way. He can't see it because the shot has

whistled past at 100 mph. Great celebration, they are ecstatic, they

think they have got themselves back in the game. And suddenly, Alan

Pardew's face changes, he starts to have chat with the fourth official

stop this is the most polite way to try and get their attention. And

suddenly, that it can be has enough when he realises the goal was talked

of, completely the wrong decision for me. I don't know what they were

thinking at that point, I don't know why they started to conversed,

because there was no offside. We spent a lot of time praising

Manchester City for their attacking football. Mainly at home. But what

they did today was work incredibly hard. I know ex-professionals don't

like to praise current players just for working hard... The other thing

with Manchester City, the games they lost before Christmas away from

home, they probably played better in those games than they did today, the

difference is, they are starting to stop the opposition playing. When

you have such outstanding players, players at the top of their game,

once you also stop the opposition from playing, what a recipe for

success that is. They are all at it. They play two up front, you might

say they are a bit light in midfield but they have got pace, power,

strength, Dzeko is right there at right back. He was never seen doing

that under Mancini. When they needed to get lucky, the goalkeeper made a

save. This is the one he did see! That was a very good save. We spend

a lot of time praising fallbacks, Colorado and is a letter now have

more assists than any other in the permission --, Roth. Today he was

excellent. They push so high up the pitch, they play like a midfield

four. You have the wide midfielders, Silva comes in and that allows this

space in behind the fallbacks. Gouffran doesn't want to track back.

A fantastic finish from Djeko. Again, because Silva comes in, plays

narrow, he creates that space for the full back. Kolarov from the

left-hand side. Nasri does well on the right-hand side. Silva starts to

run. He just knows, he runs over 70 yards. Again, Djeko almost gets on

the end of it. He did it all afternoon. He attacked and

attacked. He has a great left foot. He puts in some great balls into the

box. Defensively we ask questions of him but he was getting in the box.

At times, I really think Silva is a key, he plays between the lines.

Nasri as well, he is a different player this season. Some news lines

from that game, the first involving Samir Nasri. He will have a scan

tomorrow having picked up a knee injury from this tackle. It could be

his ligaments. Pellegrini said that was a red card, was it? Absolutely.

Definitely. A blatant red card. Judging that on the tackle? Just on

the tackle. The other news lines which might dominate the newspapers,

is that between Alan Pardew and Manuel Pellegrini. Pardew swearing

at Pellegrini in the strongest possible terms to put it

diplomatically. Alan Pardew did apologise.

I hear it has been picked up a little bit. I apologise for my

comment 100%. It was the heat of the moment. We had words we always have

as managers to a degree. I have apologised to him. I'm fortunate for

myself he has -- I am fortunate he has accepted it. What did he say to

you? That will remain private. Let's start our look at yesterday's

games with one of those big games from the bottom.

There must be serious concerns about Fulham and their inability to keep

the ball out. Generally, over the years, Fulham

have been comfortable in the Premier League. Because of their home form.

At the moment, every time they play at Craven Cottage, generally, all

the teams that have gone there, it has been easy for them to score. It

is a massive worry. Hangeland, is he due to come back soon? The funny

thing about Fulham is, the appointment of Ray Wilkins and Alan

Curbishley, great. I wonder whether they fancy Meulensteen as a manager?

If you bring one, yes. He has never managed before. The other two have

managed. The least experienced of all of them. For them, Hangeland

coming back would be huge for them. He will steady the ship. Normally at

Craven Cottage, they are a good side. They have been seen as a good

side to play against, but a little bit soft, especially away from

home. That has crept in at home which is why they are struggling. If

he had anything about him, he would have stayed at Manchester city and

made it there. The next few weeks are big. If there were not the

opportunity is there? It was too easy to go. I wonder how

professional he is. He has all the ability in the world. I hope he does

not let himself down. He got a hat-trick yesterday, Sunderland

winning at Craven Cottage. Here are all of yesterday's other

provides Sam Allardyce with a key moment which could be a turning

the east end of London, and those who had faith in the manager. Sam

Allardyce has his win. They have their win. And a miserable week has

a very, very happy ending. Lukaku chases this and controls it.

Neatly done by the on loan Chelsea striker. Barry in support. He might

fancy a go, he does! Oh, what a hit from Gareth Barry. There was no

stopping that one. His third goal for the club, to give Everton the

lead. It was a beauty. Whitby Baines or more allies? It is

the Belgian! -- Will it be Baines or Morales.

Everton doubled their advantage. Injecting more life into Norwich

since his introduction. He has got the cross in. Snodgrass, off the

post. Cleared by height in. The closest Norwich have come. Heitinga.

Eriksen beaten to it. Delaney getting there. Still progressing

forward. Looking for Chamakh. Dembele with the challenge. He has

given it, a penalty kick. Dembele with an ill timed challenge on

Chamakh. Jason Puncheon who scored a penalty on New Year's Day has the

opportunity to score once more. Oh, a dreadful penalty from Jason

Puncheon. They can't believe it. One of the worst penalties you are

likely to see. Norton. Towards Adebayor. Eriksen is

in here. Tottenham are in front. Christian Eriksen. Completely

unmarked. His fourth goal of the season.

Dembele, picked up. Through two Defoe, and again. Jermain Defoe for

Tottenham. It is his 143rd goal for Spurs, 24 hours after he announced

his intention to leave White Hart Lane at the end of February. Crystal

Palace go down to defeat. David Luiz. Hazard. A shooting

chance for him, and another, and he has scored. Eden Hazard, he picked

the right moment, found the right sport. -- spot. He wouldn't fancy

Hull City getting back into it. Look at the dummy. Alex Bruce bought it.

William to tourists. Desperate for a goal. A really good run, he has got

his goal. Fernando Torres on target for the second Premier League game

in a row. Chelsea wrapped up the points. Torres scores on the

occasion of his 200 Aappearance in the Premier League. He had been

quite such a lot of the game. He seemed to have his mind set on

scoring. Chelsea, at least for a short while, are going to the top of

the Barclays Premier League. Ramires. Could have opened it up,

Lallana! A goal they deserve. The match hasn't been a great spectacle

so far. But they have been by far the better team. Adam Lallana uses

the moment to wish his mother a happy birthday.

Rich world. A great shot, superb save by Boruc. The flag stayed down.

Shane logs cannot believe he couldn't turn that home. -- Shane

Long. Fletcher. Januzaj. Trying to tease

and beat Rangel but he hasn't done that yet. He got a good ball in,

Williams Test header. A great save. Antonio Valencia with a goal the

Manchester United. Januzaj delivered a great ball. A good save by Tremmel

who was unlucky. A great start to the second half for Manchester

United. Kagawa. You just feel a second goal

is coming. Januzaj. Welbeck's header blocked. A touch from Welbeck. And

Manchester United look safe now. A snaffled finish from Danny well
