The Premier League is back, although thanks to the international break,

these Manchester United fans have had to wait a couple of weeks to see

all their new signings in action. Good evening, welcome to Match Of

The Day 2. Myself, Jermaine and Mark have decided to come pitch side for

the day's only game. Of course, we'll have all of yesterday's action

still to come, and goal of the month for August, but let's get straight

to the main event. Both sides have had stuttering starts to this

season, this is van Gaal v Redknapp, Manchester United vQPR.

It's proving painful for United. Will the new signings do the trick?

Kevan Gaal beat QPR? Redknapp knows how to win on this

ground in the Cup but not the league and his team come here off the back

of a morale-boosting win. The return of Rio is another sub plot in

Perfect ball to Rooney. Back to Herrera. Green had no chance. QPR

need to score at least twice now. They have only managed that on this

ground on one occasion. I think Di Maria will have Sir Alex

excited. The old Manchester United this in

the first half. Took a while to get going.

Rooney. And they have another! And they've been totally dominant.

Manchester United explode back into form easing their way to a victory

and Queens Park Rangers are on the back foot. Patience in the build-up,

precision in the passing. Back on to his right foot. QPR stood off him.

come as they come back to 4-4-2. 3-0 up. Rafael. Traore. Certainly can

motor and set up a counterattack or two and does so now. Kranjcar. De

Gea had to make a save. Rooney. Tussling.

Had a promising debut second time around for QPR, Kranjcar. Very good

run by Traore who set up the chance. Di Maria. Good movement. Good

Lovely move. Rafael did well. Away from Mata still got the shot away.

Rooney helped it on. First effort Manchester United have had on

Di Maria. Come all the way to Mata. It was oh, so very simple.

Manchester United have roared back to their best Queens Park Rangers

have not been good enough. No pressure on the ball.

QPR have been well beaten by Manchester United. Manchester United

back to winning ways. Van Gaal's jigsaw beginning to take

shape. We get much better, but I'm very

happy about the result, the goals that we have made, but also in the

second half, we made a lot of chances and that's what I'm pleased

about. Three minutes to half time, 1-0 down, gave away a terrible goal,

the first goal, needless foul, needless free kick they scored from.

I thought we'd come in at 1-0, we are still bang in the game. Had a

great chance with Phillips. So to come in 3-0 down when the keeper had

a shot to save really first half, you've got to make sure you don't

get beat six and sevens. Difficult day today. We got that. We are

looking forward to this season. It's important to win the game because we

have a long week of work and if we win, we have confidence. This is

special because it's also the birthday of my wife and I have

already given a present to her but she said that this morning the

biggest present shall be the victory of our opponent at Queens Park

Rangers and we gave it to her. Well, Mrs Van Gaal will be pleased

with her birthday present. It is empty, the stadium, but did you get

a sense Manchester United fans were starting to believe again? Yes, it

was almost like the start of their season today. Why wouldn't they

believe? What a performance from Di Maria today. Played well. Blind put

on a steady performance and Falcao lit the place up. There is plenty

for Man United to believe in. They would have been worried before, Van

Gaal, because so many players not just making their debut, but in

different positions. You are at home, under pressure, spending all

this money, everyone is saying, show us what you have got. They were

fortunate to date in that QPR were abject, for most of the game. Not

Manchester United's fault though. I will explore that more, whether they

should temper their joy because of the opposition. We will look at a

couple of United signings. Their record by, Angel Di Maria. You know

what he does? He gets bums off seats and when you look at the Manchester

United teams of old, they have always had wingers, for want of a

better description, like him, who run at people and take people on. It

is very Ryan Giggs like. The great thing about him, he commits people.

Manchester United generally, even last season, didn't have any great

pace in the team. Some you can -- sometimes you can argue not great

with, but today, fantastic. If you are a defender dealing with this,

time after time, you will eventually crack. He is fit, Di Maria, and he

will take his chance. This is a goal from the free kick, it is across all

day long. When you have people in front of you, Rooney and Van Persie,

and when he is running at people, Di Maria, all of a sudden, you move,

because you think you will get the ball. It was a different Manchester

United going forward. I like his work rate, his trickery. He lights

up the place, which is needed. This is 100% a cross, going for you. This

is what we came to see. This is what you pay your money for. If Van

Persie puts that away, that will be on TV for a long time. Very similar

to a goal he set up for Argentina against Germany. So we are saying

that United fans have to temper it because of QPR's performance. You

felt they invited you -- United on to them? QPR did not really turn up.

There was too much space. They came to deploy tactical sitting off, but

there is sitting off with pressure. They needed to more pressure. You

have world-class players here. He is in 20 yards of space and he picks

out a pass. He can put it where he wants, no pressure whatsoever. That

is all very well from Queens Park Rangers' point of view, until you

fails, and they did not have a plan B. Charlie Austin upfront, so many

examples of the space. This is the goal, they are yard off all the

time. The wide players, Phillips and Hoilett, never really pressed or got

forward. Rafael sits at right back and all he does is bomb on, like a

training game. If you are in the QPR midfield, and you have, what are you

doing? When you go 2-0 down, Harry Redknapp said they did not want to

concede six or seven, what are you doing as a midfielder to try to

change it? That is when you need the plan B. You need your characters,

someone strong enough to say, right, we will change the way we are

playing, let's get after them and find them another way. We are a goal

down, it is not working, they are on top others. I would have got after

them, forced them into corners, put pressure on them. QPR did not play

that well today, but there was a couple of occasions when they got

after Manchester United and could have opened them up at times. They

are not blessed with great pace at the back. When you come to a place

like this, the first thing you do the defender, you take a step back.

If you have the pace, you take a step forward. They did not do it.

You can't individually. It is the same as when they played Spurs, they

were beaten 4-0. Your team-mates have depressed as well, otherwise

you are picked off. It is something you need to work on. Especially at

Manchester United, you will be picked off, as you said. Sometimes

there is triggers, like if the right back gets it that is the time for

Charlie Austin to come across, close off the space, the midfielders get

goal side, then the only ball for Rafael would have been in the

channel, which hopefully Caulker or Rio Ferdinand would have been

cleaning up. There are triggers, especially if you need to go to plan

B. In the press room afterwards, he was in disguise, he talked about

Blind afterwards, and it was a compliment, I think, he got it and

he gave it. Yes, it was, sweeping up here, he just gives it. For people

like Rooney, Van Persie and Di Maria, he is the ideal person to

sitting behind. He brings that calmness to the team. He was

directing players around the pitch today. He is someone I believe that

Van Gaal believes in. He is going to be using him in a lot of the big

effective. When the opposition have the ball, he is always in position.

That is a major issue for Manchester United in that department. It will

be interesting to see what he is like when Silva and other players

come around him. They may give him a problem. I don't know how quick he

is. It will be interesting when he comes up against better opposition.

He might have Carrick, when fit, up alongside him. Manchester United

defensively, when they play the bigger sides, is your concern. They

played four at the back today, but I think he likes the three. I was not

convinced by Manchester United defensively today. They conceded too

many chances and QPR left -- let them off the Hulk too many times.

There are things they need to sort out. It is a start. Something to

Since Neil Warnock was last here in 2010, Crystal Palace have had four

little bit disappointed. Given we finished 11th, last season, I

Back to the future is all very well, but for the present it is about

getting back to winning ways for Crystal Palace, and the visitors,

Burnley. You know what, that wasn't far away.

Wilfried Zaha, on his home debut for the second time, and he nearly got

over the line. Janowicz appeared to be dragged down and that is going to

Speroni is the hero of the hour for Crystal Palace! It is great to be

back. I look around today and it is a special place. I am determined I

am going to enjoy this season, come what may, and I want the lads to

have a go. Were you on your tractor when you got the phone call? No, I

wasn't, but it makes a good story. You joked about being sentenced

choice for the club. I did not mind if I was ten or 15 stories. The

opportunity to take it and become manager is fantastic. I am proud of

it, mate. Did you understand there might be resistance from some fans

they gave me today, so that answers your question. Last season as a

tough act to follow. We can go anywhere and get results. We can

enjoy ourselves. But other people write us off, we have been written

off a few times, so why not? So not the best game and not the best

we were there. I think certainly Burnley will be more pleased with

their point but the problem I think for both teams is going to be goals.

I suppose it was evident in the fact that after a missed penalty or, when

you say this, Speroni is being done a disservice? Yes, a fantastic save.

These are two teams I think will be down there. That's definitely a

point dropped. They have got to realise where they

are, so in some ways he'll take positives at getting that point?

Yes, they can take positives. I don't think they deserved to win the

game. When you get those opportunities, like a penalty many

the last minute, sticking them away becomes important. It was a great

save from Speroni. And he's out for a while now which makes it more of a

problem in terms of goal scoring for that side. Let's move to sides

who'll fancy a go at the title this season. Here is more of today's

games with Villa's win. Before I ask you about Liverpool, you have to

give immense credit to Villa and how they've started the season? People

kept talking about the games that they had to come and hall was the

first of those games and they have gone to Anfield and put in a really

disciplined performance and nicked the win which will fill them with

immense confidence along with a clean sheet. We touched on that this

lunch time, that the move for Senderos was mocked in some quarters

during the somer, wasn't it? It was mocked, yes. You talk about a mayer

like Senderos and you think, he speaks five languages, you are not

saying he's absolutely brilliant but he's had a great start. That's what

some of the younger ones have needed at the back? What Lambert had to do,

he gave the youngsters a chance. He's said right, everyone's got

their chance now, I'm bringing back the players I want to bring back.

Were you surprised at Sterling? Yes. Even though Rodgers says he has to

protect his development? Only played four games in the season and Tuesday

night's game in the Champions League, it's great for Liverpool to

be back in it, but everyone knows that Suarez has gone so you are

going to struggle to replace his goals. Sturridge is injured,

Balotelli's just come in, you have to play Sterling because he would

have given over 90 minutes, far more problems than the other players. Is

it going to be difficult to keep up with sides like Chelsea? No. It's a

long season. Chelsea have got off to an absolute flyer but they'll come

up against tough times as well. Manchester City next week?

Precisely. They'll have injuries, so Gerry Adams need rotating. Costa is

important to them but I personally think Chelsea are going to run away

with it but they are not goners yet. The Champions League is massive.

Also, your immediate gains after the Champions League, are you home,

away, travelling midweek et cetera. As the season goes on, we expect

Chelsea to be in the last eight, last four of the Champions League,

so you never know, but listen, we have had the transfer deadline. You

look at the season so far, it's very short, but Chelsea have done

absolutely everything right. They have done nothing wrong. Players in,

players out, the results, the way they are playing. They look more of

an attacking team since Mourinho went to Madrid and managed, where

they demand that you two forward, he's gone from a little glass half

empty to more like glass half full I think as a coach. If the glass is

half full as far as Jose Mourinho is concerned, it's half empty as far as

Alan Pardew is concerned. All the rest of yesterday's goals now,

starting with the manager under the most pressure.

piece of tricky play from Johnson. You won't find a footba supporter

from the country who doesn't love to see wingers and defenders.

from the start again. Ericsson on the side. It's going to be a flick

into the middle. Missed by everybody. It's gone in. It's an own

Either side can be happy at the way they have started this season.

Lukaku scores against the team he was on loan to. His first goal of

the season, sublime finish. And modest in the way he celebrated that

goal in deference to the fans who used to support him.

miss by Naismith. Scored in every league game for Everton this season.

Promising. What a mistake from the goalkeeper. Scores the second goal.

His mistake without any question whatsoever.

Konchesky. 1-0 Leicester! And the Argentinian's done it again.

Fine finish. After waiting almost a decade, Leicester City have a win

again in the top flight. We have to put that to You,

Newcastle's performance. 39% Ashley, 25% for the players, the rest for

Pardew. Shared responsibility? Yes. For me, yesterday's performance was

typical of a club that's in crisis, number one, and, you know, when it's

not been run right at the top, that filters down on to the pitch.

Defence evidently, they were terrible yesterday. Newcastle's lost

their identity as a whole, the way they are. When I was at the club,

there was the likes of Shearer, Speed and Dyer, mayors that were

there to help me out. You could go to these players. I just don't see

that in Newcastle any more. You cannot keep selling your better

players. You will struggle. Lots of clubs sell their best players. It is

how you replace them. They have been spoiled little bit, you know how

they bought those players three or four years ago, relatively cheap

fees, trained them on and sold them on, it doesn't happen every year.

They had a spectacular time, bringing in those players. Sometimes

the market doesn't work and when you start to lose games, it is no wonder

the manager is under pressure. Do you think they are trying to

replicate what they did two three years ago? Absolutely. What is Mike

Ashley good at? Use a successful businessman. He will think he can

buy someone a ?5 million, train them up, then sell them for ?20 million.

But it can't happen all the time. You say they are in crisis. It is

too early to say that Chelsea are too difficult to keep up with, is it

too early to say that Newcastle are in a lot of trouble? It is a

ruthless league. Christmas soon creeps up on you. Once that is

there, the teams in the bottom three are likely to go down if they are

still there at Christmas. Newcastle really need to do something. Pardew

is under immense pressure. Does it fall on his head? I am not sure. I

am not sure how much control he has at the club. Again, another team

that don't look like they can score goals, one of probably telling the

Premier League. Two good, two bad to come in a moment but first, this is

what the Premier League table looks. Here is two good, two bad. Save of

the weekend came from Julian Speroni, at Palace. Jefferson

Montero might be new to the Premier League, but he isn't intimidated by

reputations. Having watched his wife on last year's strictly macro, Peter

Crouch evidently picked up some tips -- on last year's strictly come

dancing. This is him, because as you know, it never fails to amuse. The

weekend was simply bad all round for him. And Francis Bob Marley is just

good, good, good. He has been running to every Premier League

ground for charity, the equivalent of two marathons for two weeks. That
