Welcome to Match of the Day 2 and the first stellar Sunday | :00:43. | :00:46.
Andy Murray's match continues on BBC One. | :00:47. | :00:57.
And - as if they've never been away - joining me tonight | :00:58. | :01:00.
are Danny Murphy and Jermaine Jenas in what is a pants-free zone - | :01:01. | :01:03.
well not exactly, but you know what I mean. | :01:04. | :01:05.
First up, last year's runners-up Arsenal take on Liverpool, | :01:06. | :01:07.
This season, there's more cash than ever in the Premier League | :01:08. | :01:11.
and both teams have made some big additions. | :01:12. | :01:16.
Swiss international Granit Xhaka a ?30 million man - | :01:17. | :01:20.
but since then it has all been pretty quiet. | :01:21. | :01:29.
Liverpool looked closer to home - ?57 million for Southampton's Sadio | :01:30. | :01:32.
Mane and the Geordies' Georginio Wijnaldum. | :01:33. | :01:36.
However, Jurgen Klopp's shrewdest signings could be in defence, | :01:37. | :01:39.
with Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan coming in from the Bundesliga. | :01:40. | :01:43.
COMMENTATOR: Games don't get much bigger to begin | :01:44. | :01:57.
with and there can't be any better incentive to kick off with the wind | :01:58. | :02:02.
and taking three points and -- off top four and maybe title rivals. | :02:03. | :02:09.
Arsenal have difficulties with their defence. An instant debut for Rob | :02:10. | :02:13.
Holding, recruited from Bolton Wanderers. As the Deauville and | :02:14. | :02:19.
Olivier Giroud are also absent after their Euros exploits. Sanchez is | :02:20. | :02:22.
ready to lead the attack after winning the Cobra tag -- the Cobra | :02:23. | :02:28.
America with Chile. Granit Xhaka is a substitute. There are debuts for | :02:29. | :02:36.
Ragnar Klavan, Sadio Mane, whose first game for Southampton within a | :02:37. | :02:40.
2-1 League Cup win two years ago. Milner and Sturridge had doubts | :02:41. | :02:43.
about the fillers. Neither has managed to make the squad. -- they | :02:44. | :02:45.
had doubts about their fitness. The Emirates Stadium looks | :02:46. | :02:55.
absolutely resplendent with a newly laid pitch. | :02:56. | :03:03.
A bright start by Arsenal in the bright North London son. -- sun. He | :03:04. | :03:18.
felt his team-mate might have been impeded by Ramsey, although the | :03:19. | :03:24.
referee didn't think that. It's a toe poked straight into the chest of | :03:25. | :03:30.
Mignolet. A little interchange. Between Alexis Sanchez and Aaron | :03:31. | :03:33.
Ramsey, typical of the way Arsenal have started the game. The time of | :03:34. | :03:36.
year when everybody makes their predictions for who will win the | :03:37. | :03:39.
title, who might manage to finish in the top four. Not too many have | :03:40. | :03:47.
really mentioned Arsenal as genuine title contenders, although they are | :03:48. | :03:48.
sure to be up there, or thereabouts. Henderson nudges it along the line | :03:49. | :04:04.
to Clyne. I shot on target. Ripped along the turf, but it was | :04:05. | :04:12.
reasonably routine save for Jack. The New England boss is busy, he was | :04:13. | :04:22.
at Manchester yesterday. Walcott couldn't get back to his feet in | :04:23. | :04:26.
time but Moreno has given the ball away, to Iwobi, to Ramsey. | :04:27. | :04:33.
A miscue from Henderson in trying to get it clear. Moreno in on Walcott | :04:34. | :04:39.
and the flag is being waved under penalty has been given. He went over | :04:40. | :04:47.
the top of the ball, Moreno. Just isn't clean enough, in the way he | :04:48. | :04:51.
went in. He takes Walcott after getting the ball. He gets a yellow | :04:52. | :05:00.
card as well. Theo Walcott scored in both of Arsenal's final two | :05:01. | :05:04.
pre-season games. How about now, when it really matters? | :05:05. | :05:13.
Walcott denied by Mignolet. It's a flying save by the Belgian. Just | :05:14. | :05:20.
left hanging in the air nicely enough for him to be able to get | :05:21. | :05:28.
there and save it. Not tucked into the corner enough, either. It's not | :05:29. | :05:29.
a great penalty from Walcott. Bellerin can't go any further. A | :05:30. | :05:41.
great challenge on Lallana by Coquelin. Another chance for | :05:42. | :05:45.
Walcott. He takes this one. It's a relieved Theo Walcott. It's | :05:46. | :06:01.
an ecstatic Emirates Stadium. No need to score. -- no need to score | :06:02. | :06:08.
the straight ones from 12 yards, when you can put them in as | :06:09. | :06:10.
accurately as that from an ankle. Really good finish from Theo Walcott | :06:11. | :06:16.
-- from Theo Walcott. Jurgen Klopp will want his team to have a spell | :06:17. | :06:21.
on the ball, to settle themselves. There is a mistake on cue from | :06:22. | :06:27.
Chambers, given away to Firmino. That's why now button and it's saved | :06:28. | :06:32.
by Cech. -- that was Wijnaldum. Chambers apologises. It hasn't cost | :06:33. | :06:39.
him or his team. Just too casual, too measured maybe, in trying to | :06:40. | :06:44.
find Elneny, led by Firmino. Maybe the shot was a little too measured | :06:45. | :06:49.
as well from Wijnaldum. Two minutes added onto the end of this first | :06:50. | :06:51.
half. Coutinho was forced off balance, | :06:52. | :07:07.
holding up too close to him. Liverpool fashion chance at | :07:08. | :07:15.
levelling things up -- can Liverpool fashion a chance at levelling things | :07:16. | :07:21.
up? Coutinho, it's a cracker, absolutely brilliant from the | :07:22. | :07:26.
Brazilian! We heard Petr Cech barking out orders to his defenders. | :07:27. | :07:32.
But it would have taken a pretty special wall to have kept that one | :07:33. | :07:37.
out. It's a band over the wall and it's right into the top corner, the | :07:38. | :07:41.
one place Cech was never going to reach it -- it is up and over the | :07:42. | :07:46.
wall. The power and the position as well. Liverpool level, hopes all | :07:47. | :07:52.
round. Arsenal don't feel it was enough of hope from Holding to | :07:53. | :07:57.
warrant a free kick in the first place. | :07:58. | :08:18.
Here's Wijnaldum. It's a nice check back. He is Lallana, and Lallana has | :08:19. | :08:30.
squeezed it in. One at the end of the first half, one at the beginning | :08:31. | :08:34.
of the second Ford Jurgen Klopp's Reds. We are getting used to seeing | :08:35. | :08:39.
him losing his spectacles. Liverpool have turned things around. | :08:40. | :08:46.
It's lovely passing. Good awareness from Wijnaldum. He sees Lallana | :08:47. | :08:54.
coming. He kept his bearings about him, knew where the goal was and | :08:55. | :09:00.
knew how to beat Cech to find it. Arsenal one, Liverpool two. | :09:01. | :09:07.
Liverpool are bossing the ball. From being a goal down, they are now | :09:08. | :09:13.
bossing the game. Wijnaldum to Clyne. Clyne just increases the pace | :09:14. | :09:22.
with a run at Monreal and it's turned into three by Coutinho. What | :09:23. | :09:29.
a goal from Liverpool! Knocked it about from side to side and back to | :09:30. | :09:33.
front, and then Clyne decided to step on it, take the initiative. | :09:34. | :09:39.
That is a sumptuous goal. And brilliantly finished by Coutinho, | :09:40. | :09:43.
for his second goal of the day. Arsenal one, Liverpool three. For | :09:44. | :09:52.
all the new signings, Phillippe Coutinho looks as though he will be | :09:53. | :09:54.
Liverpool's key man this season. Firmino is trying to sidestep | :09:55. | :10:08.
Chambers, who won't get out of his way lightly. Coutinho's shot is | :10:09. | :10:12.
smothered and its bundled wide in the end. By Adam Lallana. It was so | :10:13. | :10:19.
very nearly four. It's got jeers booming down onto the field from the | :10:20. | :10:24.
Arsenal fans. Now it looks like they've missed Laurent Koscielny | :10:25. | :10:26.
hugely today. Here's Mane. Mane brushes Chambers | :10:27. | :10:47.
aside and scores Liverpool's fourth! What a performance from Liverpool. | :10:48. | :10:54.
Sadio Mane with another cracking goal. Now there's not just | :10:55. | :11:02.
discontent from the Arsenal fans, it's just plain brewing, and it's | :11:03. | :11:06.
loud. Jurgen Klopp can scarcely contain his delight at what he has | :11:07. | :11:13.
seen from his side since just before half-time -- booing. It's Mane | :11:14. | :11:17.
showing great pace, too strong, too sharp for Chambers. Monreal didn't | :11:18. | :11:22.
know where he was and there was nothing Cech or Holding could do | :11:23. | :11:25.
about that. This will be headline news. Arsenal one, Liverpool four, | :11:26. | :11:31.
and quite a few Arsenal fans are heading for home already as | :11:32. | :11:33.
Oxlade-Chamberlain gets them back into the game, perhaps. All his own | :11:34. | :11:41.
work. Goals reining in at the Emirates. There's nothing on for | :11:42. | :11:44.
Oxlade-Chamberlain but in a flash he is between two, he has passed | :11:45. | :11:48.
another two, and there's a little deflection that takes that away from | :11:49. | :11:54.
Mignolet's hands. Arsenal two, Liverpool four. Well, it was billed | :11:55. | :11:57.
as a game at the weekend. I think it's lived up to it! | :11:58. | :12:06.
It will be a Santi Cazorla cross. He's put it into the right place and | :12:07. | :12:30.
its thing. Calum Chambers got something on it. -- it is in. | :12:31. | :12:36.
Arsenal really do have something to chase now. It's a thrill a minute | :12:37. | :12:43.
ride to kick off campaign at the Emirates. Who did get the final | :12:44. | :12:49.
touch? Chambers was telling is all that he did. And he did. Just adding | :12:50. | :12:59.
to the pace of the cross, which was terrific from Santi Cazorla. It's | :13:00. | :13:04.
now Arsenal three, Liverpool four. What a change in mood around the | :13:05. | :13:08.
ground, from you don't know what you're doing. Haven't heard a think | :13:09. | :13:16.
you do know what you're doing! -- I haven't heard a proud thing, you do | :13:17. | :13:25.
know what you are doing! -- crowd sing. Oxlade-Chamberlain is waiting | :13:26. | :13:32.
for the ball. Incomes Wijnaldum. Now Roberto Firmino. Came off and | :13:33. | :13:40.
Arsenal need, went into the side of Cech's goal. He senses the game is | :13:41. | :13:48.
up for his team today. A spirited fightback, but it was that Liverpool | :13:49. | :13:51.
blitz which has seen them win the game. What a game, what a way to | :13:52. | :13:57.
start the Premier League season at the Emirates Stadium. I think we got | :13:58. | :14:02.
what we expected at the end of this today. Liverpool have got a massive | :14:03. | :14:03.
three points. Was that how you expected it to go? | :14:04. | :14:16.
Exactly! I could not dream in my wildest dreams that I would be | :14:17. | :14:23.
saying that we could concede three and, normally when you concede three | :14:24. | :14:28.
goals at Arsenal, you will lose. It was a game of two halves. We had a | :14:29. | :14:35.
good first half and we were unlucky to be 1-1 at half-time. After the | :14:36. | :14:41.
first half I think we made a massive mistake on the second goal and after | :14:42. | :14:46.
you could see that we had shock and we lacked experience at the back. | :14:47. | :14:52.
Yes, we need the wonderful strike, may be the first goal of the season | :14:53. | :14:57.
was the goal of the season. And at half-time we could change a lot of | :14:58. | :15:01.
things and after half-time, we came out and scored crazy goals. It is | :15:02. | :15:06.
not allowed that a manager celebrates a goal like this, but I | :15:07. | :15:11.
was on my way before I could stop it. It's the first game for me in | :15:12. | :15:15.
the season, and I won't do it again that early in a game, but in this | :15:16. | :15:19.
moment you could see something changed. We have a good fight back, | :15:20. | :15:26.
and this team is mentally strong and determined to fight, and we showed | :15:27. | :15:30.
that again today. Was there a worry when there was only one goal in it? | :15:31. | :15:35.
We're always confident as a team even if we go 1-0 down, that's what | :15:36. | :15:39.
the manager has driven into us, that never say die attitude. No matter | :15:40. | :15:45.
what moment we are in the game, level, down, we stay strong and we | :15:46. | :15:48.
got together in the end we saw the game out. Very nervy for Liverpool | :15:49. | :15:53.
at the end, and it was only their second away win at Arsenal in 16 | :15:54. | :15:59.
years, incredibly, I think Danny was part of the last one to do it. But | :16:00. | :16:04.
what a game from your old side. Incredible. I was fearful up until | :16:05. | :16:08.
the 44th minute. We did not start the game well. But the speed, the | :16:09. | :16:13.
intensity and creativity they showed in the second half was so promising | :16:14. | :16:18.
and it reminded me of a couple of performances last season when they | :16:19. | :16:21.
went to Chelsea and Manchester city and played ever so well. The trick | :16:22. | :16:27.
now is to do it more consistently, because when they play like that, | :16:28. | :16:31.
it's sensational. For the Arsenal fans, is that the realisation of | :16:32. | :16:36.
their concerns? The lack of options at centre-half and a quality | :16:37. | :16:41.
striker? I go with what Danny ger said. In the first half, I thought | :16:42. | :16:47.
they looked OK. -- Danny just said. It would be easy to sit here and | :16:48. | :16:53.
criticise the defence. There was a lot of inexperience at the back, | :16:54. | :16:56.
yes, but they are two very young centre halves coming into a tough | :16:57. | :17:00.
game against a good Liverpool side and they are going to get better. In | :17:01. | :17:05.
the central defensive area, you need partnerships and it needs time to | :17:06. | :17:10.
grow. They are chucked in, brand-new as a partnership, and they | :17:11. | :17:13.
struggled, but everybody knew it was going to be a tough game for them. | :17:14. | :17:18.
They tried to come back, but in the end, it was too much. Despite the | :17:19. | :17:22.
scoreline, it's easy to forget that Arsenal have a much better of the | :17:23. | :17:26.
first half, and you saw a game plan from the hosts. There was an obvious | :17:27. | :17:31.
game plan. We all thought Liverpool would be all over Arsenal, trying to | :17:32. | :17:34.
press them and we know Jurgen Klopp likes that. Arsenal did it well to | :17:35. | :17:39.
Liverpool early in the game. There was an obvious intensity in the play | :17:40. | :17:43.
and closing down, and they were at it. I like to see that in the | :17:44. | :17:46.
opening game of the season. You want to be on the front foot. They showed | :17:47. | :17:49.
good energy and desire to win the ball back. In Arsene Wenger's | :17:50. | :17:55.
interview, he said they could not continue that intensity in the | :17:56. | :18:00.
second half which, OK, maybe it's understandable, but when they do | :18:01. | :18:02.
this they are a really good side. They play on the front foot, they | :18:03. | :18:06.
get after you and keep the ball away from the back four and may keep | :18:07. | :18:10.
winning the ball back, time and time again. Look at the desire from Theo | :18:11. | :18:14.
Walcott, taking the ball from Wijnaldum. Everyone of them, to a | :18:15. | :18:19.
man, they were all at it in the first 35 and 40 minutes. Yes, | :18:20. | :18:23.
Liverpool made some mistakes, but because of the high press, and that | :18:24. | :18:28.
time was Mignolet giving Henderson a silly ball, and they got the | :18:29. | :18:34.
rewards. Six men all in the final third, all trying to score a goal. | :18:35. | :18:37.
Liverpool win it back, but they don't switch off, watch this tackle | :18:38. | :18:43.
from Coquelin. Not sure where Moreno is going, but Walcott after missing | :18:44. | :18:47.
a penalty smashes it into the bottom corner and at that point I thought | :18:48. | :18:51.
Liverpool did well to hang on. Very much playing the Liverpool wafer | :18:52. | :18:54.
Arsenal, but did we see a shift in momentum in the equaliser it was a | :18:55. | :18:58.
magical moment from Philippe Coutinho. We did. But Liverpool were | :18:59. | :19:07.
not really at it. When you have a magician in your side like Philippe | :19:08. | :19:11.
Coutinho you have a chance and we could watch this free kick over and | :19:12. | :19:16.
over again. It was sublime. That is where the game changed, from a | :19:17. | :19:20.
mentality point of view for Liverpool and Arsenal and for | :19:21. | :19:22.
momentum. Liverpool took the goal and took it into the second half. | :19:23. | :19:26.
Arsene Wenger said it was a game of two halves and there was a different | :19:27. | :19:30.
contest altogether in the second half, but why was that? I listen to | :19:31. | :19:35.
Adam Lallana's comments after the game and he said that there were | :19:36. | :19:40.
words had with each other in the second half and they realised they | :19:41. | :19:43.
did not live up to what they are capable of the first half and to | :19:44. | :19:47.
change it. It was a matter of them saying, listen, we need more | :19:48. | :19:51.
intensity in the game, get closer to players and we are better. You can | :19:52. | :19:55.
see little want to touch is a flick around the corner from Coutinho. | :19:56. | :20:03.
Then the finish from Adam Lallana, the 49th minute, that is what Jurgen | :20:04. | :20:06.
Klopp would have wanted, get out there and get me a goal. Lovely pass | :20:07. | :20:12.
into midfield, Wijnaldum involved again. There were 19 passes. A great | :20:13. | :20:17.
team goal. A lovely ball from Nathaniel Clyne who cause a lot of | :20:18. | :20:20.
problems down the right-hand side, and I know it comes off Coutinho's | :20:21. | :20:25.
Shin, but lovely finish, good run, in the back of the net. Just a bit | :20:26. | :20:31.
more determined to win the balls, and Mane was sensational throughout | :20:32. | :20:35.
the whole game. The minute he picks the ball up there's only one place | :20:36. | :20:38.
he is going, and when he puts it in the top corner, it was everything he | :20:39. | :20:42.
deserved. He was the best player on the pitch throughout the game and is | :20:43. | :20:45.
so hard to deal with. The most sprinting in the game. I think | :20:46. | :20:52.
Jurgen Klopp regretted the celebration, but Liverpool follow -- | :20:53. | :20:55.
thoroughly deserved the victory. Is this a glimpse of what we can expect | :20:56. | :21:01.
from Liverpool? I really hope so. When you think they have Sturridge | :21:02. | :21:06.
to go back into it as well, it's exciting times. But I think we saw | :21:07. | :21:10.
last season a few examples and I spoke about them early the brilliant | :21:11. | :21:13.
Liverpool performance and they did not back it up. I remember them | :21:14. | :21:19.
going to Watford and losing 3-0 the week after. It's about consistency. | :21:20. | :21:24.
But they look, when they are on the front foot and go after teams, very, | :21:25. | :21:28.
very dangerous and it's very promising for Liverpool supporters. | :21:29. | :21:36.
For Arsenal, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey hobbling off, lots of booing | :21:37. | :21:39.
from the fans and Arsene Wenger is starting on the back foot again. | :21:40. | :21:43.
Players going down injured, and Ramsey had such a good campaign for | :21:44. | :21:47.
Wales, to go off with a hamstring injury is so disappointing for him | :21:48. | :21:50.
and the fans. I don't think it is to do with the Euros. I really don't. | :21:51. | :21:54.
Bournemouth survived their inaugural season in the Premier League | :21:55. | :21:56.
and will once again be looking to consolidate this time around. | :21:57. | :21:59.
The small matter of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United. | :22:00. | :22:04.
Jose has been The Busy One this summer. | :22:05. | :22:06.
Pogba back for a world record fee, ?30 million for Eric Bailly and | :22:07. | :22:10.
The Cherries are backing youth - Jordan Ibe and Brad Smith arriving | :22:11. | :22:23.
from Anfield and Leeds' Lewis Cook among the new recruits. | :22:24. | :22:26.
Jonathan Pearce was at the Vitality Stadium. | :22:27. | :22:35.
And the end of the pier summertime special on the BBC, just like the | :22:36. | :22:45.
old days. As Jose Mourinho begins his campaign to restore Manchester | :22:46. | :22:48.
United's all supremacy, knowing all too well that a Bournemouth victory | :22:49. | :22:53.
at Chelsea in December virtually sealed his fate there. Eddie Howe | :22:54. | :22:57.
has told his team to have a real go at the United team. Jordan Ibe and | :22:58. | :23:02.
Lewis Cook making their debuts. There are two United changes from | :23:03. | :23:06.
the Community Shield, a rarer for Carrick, and Juan Mata falling down. | :23:07. | :23:11.
The Spaniard has a lot to give, says Marino, although he is the most | :23:12. | :23:14.
likely to suffer from the arrival of Paul Pogba. Ibrahimovic begins his | :23:15. | :23:20.
quest for a debut title at a seventh club. Bournemouth are actually | :23:21. | :23:27.
unbeaten at home in four meetings with Manchester United. They had | :23:28. | :23:32.
that very famous cup victory under Harry Redknapp back in January 19 | :23:33. | :23:36.
84. Possibly the most famous date in the history of the club until their | :23:37. | :23:43.
promotion success. Daniels. Sure, the torch was heavy. -- the touch | :23:44. | :23:51.
was heavy. Good to see Callum Wilson back and fully fit after that | :23:52. | :23:56.
horrible cruciate ligament injury he picked up last September. Jose | :23:57. | :23:59.
Mourinho, unbeaten in seven Premier League opening games. | :24:00. | :24:03.
Getting forward well and he will take on Charlie Daniels here. | :24:04. | :24:20.
Manages to get the crossing, and Ibrahimovic is coming in. The | :24:21. | :24:23.
referee gives a free kick against him. But he was aggressive in the | :24:24. | :24:32.
air, and good work by Valencia, hanging across high. That is where | :24:33. | :24:35.
Ibrahimovic scored from a Wembley last weekend. It rose, it hung, and | :24:36. | :24:43.
then crunched. Eddie Howe's Bournemouth went through pre-season | :24:44. | :24:48.
unbeaten, six games, three wins, three draws. Lovely take from one | :24:49. | :24:55.
matter. Picks out Ibrahimovic -- from Mata. Interesting that Rooney | :24:56. | :25:02.
and Ibrahimovic seem to be prepared to swap. Rooney, taking up a good | :25:03. | :25:07.
position. Martial. Ibrahimovic lumbering up through the middle. | :25:08. | :25:13.
Martial goes for goal. Did not have a good summer with France in the | :25:14. | :25:17.
Euros and he flashed that one wide. 15 goals in his first campaign to | :25:18. | :25:28.
Manchester United last season. Olly Murs in the crowd. Can Manchester | :25:29. | :25:33.
United provide the X Factor neck -- this season? Valencia can pull it | :25:34. | :25:41.
back. Mata to Rooney. Borage, keep looking for his first clean sheet in | :25:42. | :25:48.
ten games, and he saved comfortably enough -- Boruc. The United | :25:49. | :25:51.
hierarchy looking on. There is the man they are looking at to restore | :25:52. | :25:55.
the glory days. Bournemouth have won four of their last ten opening | :25:56. | :26:01.
games, and Manchester United have won 16 of their 24 Premier League | :26:02. | :26:05.
openers. A joint record that, with Chelsea. | :26:06. | :26:12.
That is sold short. Olly Murs is in. It bounces horribly, and Mata | :26:13. | :26:26.
converts. -- Mata is in. Manchester United ahead with a huge slash of | :26:27. | :26:37.
luck. The man who arrived, and Jose Mourinho says he can give him so | :26:38. | :26:42.
much. He showed tenacity there and after it broke horribly Francis, he | :26:43. | :26:47.
tapped it in. Last week he was rather humiliated at Wembley, but | :26:48. | :26:52.
having been substituted as a substitute, real joy on his face | :26:53. | :26:57.
here. Sir Bobby Charlton looking on, good to see him here. And looking so | :26:58. | :27:07.
well. Memories of 1966 have been refreshed in recent weeks. One by | :27:08. | :27:11.
Fellaini. Ibrahimovic looking for Rooney. Through the gap. And | :27:12. | :27:20.
thwarted by Boruc, but another sign there could be a really strong to | :27:21. | :27:24.
Dan -- understanding growing between Ibrahimovic and Rooney. Very good | :27:25. | :27:34.
players tend to gel quite quickly. Given away again. Ibrahimovic, | :27:35. | :27:40.
perfect weight on the ball to Rooney. Andrew Surman sends him | :27:41. | :27:48.
down. He says it was a dive by Rooney. Andrew Surman pleads | :27:49. | :27:50.
innocence, and from that angle there was nothing in it. Bournemouth need | :27:51. | :27:58.
to make changes. Not showing enough here to suggest they can come back | :27:59. | :28:05.
into the game with 58 minutes gone. Manchester United have certainly | :28:06. | :28:09.
shown more determination as a group, more togetherness as a group. They | :28:10. | :28:14.
showed the long periods of last season. Mata, good release and well | :28:15. | :28:23.
timed. Valencia on the charge. Valencia still gets across in an | :28:24. | :28:29.
Martial has scuffed it. Rooney! 2-0. A long way back for Bournemouth now. | :28:30. | :28:36.
He has played very well. And he edges closer to Sir Bobby Charlton's | :28:37. | :28:42.
record. One minute shy of the hour, Martial could not score, but Rooney | :28:43. | :28:49.
certainly could. 247 goals for United. Classic header, back across | :28:50. | :28:55.
the goalkeeper. End of the season, scoring against Bournemouth at home, | :28:56. | :28:58.
start the league season with a goal against them. Pensive Bournemouth | :28:59. | :29:09.
manager, and #4 Bournemouth. Wayne Rooney has won 155 of his hundred | :29:10. | :29:15.
and 70 same -- hundred and 77 games for Manchester United when he has | :29:16. | :29:19.
good. Martial on the half term. Running directly and clipped by | :29:20. | :29:20.
Andrew Surman. Pitch by Surman, who couldn't get in | :29:21. | :29:33.
-- couldn't let him get the shot way. Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored in | :29:34. | :29:36.
the Community Shield Badge leak and very nearly scored again. Good save, | :29:37. | :29:41.
big gap in the wall, Ben through it. Powerful right-handed save. A | :29:42. | :29:48.
boisterous Man United following away as always. Martial coming into the | :29:49. | :29:57.
game more now. Clipped by Ake, Manchester United going for the kill | :29:58. | :30:01.
and a wonderful strike from Zlatan Ibrahimovic puts Manchester United | :30:02. | :30:05.
3-0 up and sounds a real warning to the Premier League. He scored on his | :30:06. | :30:14.
league debut for Juventus into Barca and now Manchester United, he's won | :30:15. | :30:18.
the title in his debut season for his last six clubs. He won the title | :30:19. | :30:24.
with Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan, and he starts lead life under Jose | :30:25. | :30:30.
Mourinho with a really good strike. -- he starts lead life. The Emperor | :30:31. | :30:34.
strikes for the special one. This is the man who could add the Eric | :30:35. | :30:38.
Cantona effect for Manchester United. Can Bournemouth's January | :30:39. | :30:47.
signings return to the club, Afobe has signed for Wolves, turn this one | :30:48. | :30:53.
around? Here is Grabban, his first touch. Couldn't clear his feet. Find | :30:54. | :31:00.
Adam Smith. Oh, a terrific goal! That will do him the world of good. | :31:01. | :31:07.
Suffered a really painful injury at the end of last season and missed | :31:08. | :31:12.
the final two months. Worked his way back to fitness pre-season and he | :31:13. | :31:16.
has worked Bournemouth back into this game with a lovely strike on | :31:17. | :31:21.
his left foot, and banged it past the gate as Manchester United | :31:22. | :31:25.
switched off to the displeasure of their manager. -- banged it past De | :31:26. | :31:29.
Gea. Arter, really good pressure on him by Shaw, here is Cook. Francis | :31:30. | :31:36.
is still full of running. Off Fellaini. Into the last minute of | :31:37. | :31:38.
stoppage time. Taken short. Francis with the cross. | :31:39. | :31:51.
Cook was in there. Driven by Surman. A splendid save by De Gea, a really | :31:52. | :31:57.
good goalkeeper, unemployed for most of the game but still alert enough | :31:58. | :32:03.
to protect Manchester United's goal. Here's the cross that comes in from | :32:04. | :32:10.
Gradel. Back it comes out, Smith with the slam. Afobe challenges. It | :32:11. | :32:15.
is loose. It's Gradel who saves the game. A late flurry. Gradel wins it | :32:16. | :32:21.
back. Out by Herrera. Work for De Gea at the end, and he | :32:22. | :32:35.
was alert enough to protect that goal, and ensure a really good | :32:36. | :32:39.
opening victory here for Jose Mourinho. | :32:40. | :32:42.
Where does this United squad stand at the moment compared to the other | :32:43. | :32:44.
squads you at the moment compared to the other | :32:45. | :32:49.
squads you have had at this stage? I met a sad squad in my first day, a | :32:50. | :32:54.
squad not happy with their situation, not happy with the | :32:55. | :33:00.
results, but I found immediately in the first training session a squad | :33:01. | :33:03.
that wants to work, wants to improve, wants to win matches, wants | :33:04. | :33:07.
to win titles, wants to be proud and make people proud of them, the Man | :33:08. | :33:16.
United supporters. I thought it was an even game until the first goal. | :33:17. | :33:19.
That was the key moment in the game, I thought. I thought we started | :33:20. | :33:23.
brightly. We dominated the early possession stakes and looked | :33:24. | :33:27.
comfortable. You can't Man United goals, which we did. How good with | :33:28. | :33:34.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic? We knew before he joined the club he was one of the | :33:35. | :33:38.
top players in the world and he has a big presence about him. He's going | :33:39. | :33:43.
to be a great addition to our team. Could he's have the same effect on | :33:44. | :33:49.
United that Cantona had all those years ago? This guy is a player we | :33:50. | :33:53.
want to have basically for the next two seasons, but I think he can be | :33:54. | :33:59.
phenomenal for the team, but I think also for the Premier League, he's | :34:00. | :34:02.
the kind of player the Premier League has to be pleased to have. A | :34:03. | :34:07.
winning start for Manchester United, never really got out of second gear | :34:08. | :34:11.
at the Vitality Stadium but with its efficiency of the clinical nature in | :34:12. | :34:15.
front of goal, it was very much in the style of Mourinho? They were | :34:16. | :34:19.
well drilled, they did in the first 20 minutes sit back and let | :34:20. | :34:23.
Bournemouth come at them a little bit and as the game went on, the | :34:24. | :34:28.
quality shone through, the senior players, the better players, started | :34:29. | :34:31.
controlling the game and there was some terrific performances. If you | :34:32. | :34:37.
think they've got Mkhitaryan who was on the bench today, Pogba, it looks | :34:38. | :34:42.
like good times a game for United. Did United get the rub of the green | :34:43. | :34:44.
like good times a game for United. Did United get the rub of the green | :34:45. | :34:46.
in terms of their goals? Definitely for the first one because at this | :34:47. | :34:49.
stage there was not much in it, if I'm honest with you. It was on a | :34:50. | :34:54.
knife edge, the game, and then that mistake from Simon Francis is what | :34:55. | :35:01.
has turned it. It's two made stakes, unfortunately. Boruc comes out to | :35:02. | :35:04.
try and clear it and it ricochets back off Francis and Mata cleans up. | :35:05. | :35:09.
In this instance here it is King who is tracking back and he's | :35:10. | :35:12.
unfortunate not to nick that ball. This is a shot for Martial, but what | :35:13. | :35:17.
good strikers do, right place, right time and Rooney is here to stick it | :35:18. | :35:23.
in the net. Flat and wasn't going to be left out. He showed glimpses in | :35:24. | :35:27.
the game -- satire in every road which wasn't going to be left out. | :35:28. | :35:31.
He could do better but it's a great strike from him and he showed some | :35:32. | :35:35.
terrific moments today, such a presence, as Wayne Rooney said -- | :35:36. | :35:40.
Ibrahimovic. A real belief in his own quality. What about the way that | :35:41. | :35:45.
Rooney and Ibrahimovic dovetails today, they were at the Community | :35:46. | :35:49.
Shield Badge weekend, there wasn't much spark there but were there | :35:50. | :35:53.
early signs today? They were much better today, I thought Rooney was | :35:54. | :35:57.
superb today, there were questions over how he would fit in but there | :35:58. | :36:01.
was no problem today. Infant terms of a front two they dovetailed. | :36:02. | :36:07.
Sometimes Ibrahimovic dropped deep, sometimes Rooney did, they had nice | :36:08. | :36:10.
linkup play. It will be interesting to see where the likes of Pogba and | :36:11. | :36:15.
Lingard played, so they have legs to get past them because that side at | :36:16. | :36:17.
the minute doesn't quite have enough legs. Do you agree? Totally agree, | :36:18. | :36:23.
good players can play together. Roomy and Ibrahimovic are as good as | :36:24. | :36:27.
it gets at the top end of the page. -- Rooney. They like to drop deep. | :36:28. | :36:32.
They were on the away line pulling strings but when you have Martial | :36:33. | :36:36.
Pogba making runs, they will be dangerous. Those two players are | :36:37. | :36:40.
often in the headlines but you have pointed out one player who is an | :36:41. | :36:44.
unsung hero. Yes, I think the Blind has been brilliant considering he is | :36:45. | :36:50.
a midfield player, turned centre-half if you like. He has | :36:51. | :36:54.
played wing back and fullback in his international career for former | :36:55. | :36:58.
clubs but he is a ray of passing, the chip in there was a difficult | :36:59. | :37:02.
technique. He always finds the right has. Rooney knows when he gets in | :37:03. | :37:07.
those holes he will find him. -- he finds the right path. Defensively | :37:08. | :37:10.
there is a question but I don't see that. He's clever, he knows when to | :37:11. | :37:16.
come out, finds danger, stays on his feet, he is a clever footballer, a | :37:17. | :37:21.
real thinker. He is becoming a good leader, I saw him organising people | :37:22. | :37:24.
today, one-on-one with someone quicker than him, he knows he is | :37:25. | :37:27.
right footed and reads it beautifully. He looks as though he | :37:28. | :37:31.
has played there all his career. His positional play is excellent and | :37:32. | :37:39.
that's what you get with clever footballers. Last year they had the | :37:40. | :37:42.
joint is defensive record in the Premier League and it's because of | :37:43. | :37:45.
this man. He reads the game so well. He gives Mourinho another option | :37:46. | :37:48.
when Chris Smalling comes back. As for Bournemouth, the setup is pretty | :37:49. | :37:53.
much what we saw last week, 4-3- three, a good goal through Adam | :37:54. | :37:56.
Smith but at some point or many points it failed to click for them | :37:57. | :38:01.
in the final third? Their build-up played for into the midfield was | :38:02. | :38:05.
good as it always is but they lacked that intensity and cutting-edge that | :38:06. | :38:10.
Bournemouth are almost renowned for in the Championship and last year in | :38:11. | :38:13.
the Premier League. When they got into these areas of the pitch they | :38:14. | :38:17.
chose the wrong option a lot of the time. Spaces out wide with Adam | :38:18. | :38:21.
Smith, but they kept coming into this central area of the pitch, | :38:22. | :38:24.
where Manchester United are so strong throughout the whole of the | :38:25. | :38:28.
game, very strong in fact. But again, not just that, it was a | :38:29. | :38:31.
hold-up play, every time the ball went into why the Wilson or King it | :38:32. | :38:36.
didn't quite stick, or the lay-off As didn't quite work. Bournemouth | :38:37. | :38:40.
are known for high-intensity get it right, get the balls into the box, | :38:41. | :38:44.
get runners the box and it just didn't seem to work for them. Their | :38:45. | :38:48.
touch, as we see here, Wilson, just didn't seem to stick. At all. In | :38:49. | :38:54.
that first half. I found the play was a bit laboured at times and then | :38:55. | :39:00.
Ibe is trying to make things happen here, you can see him almost asking | :39:01. | :39:04.
his team-mates come on, move, give me something, but the spaces out | :39:05. | :39:08.
wide and I felt that's where the space was for them today because of | :39:09. | :39:13.
how strong United were in the middle and they kept trying to force these | :39:14. | :39:15.
passes through the centre of the pitch. It was easy for United in the | :39:16. | :39:22.
end. They didn't have to work that hard at dealing with them. What | :39:23. | :39:25.
Bournemouth eventually had to resort to what situations like this, 40 | :39:26. | :39:30.
yard shots, and it wasn't a normal Bournemouth I was used to seeing but | :39:31. | :39:31.
I'm not worried about them at all. There were seven games yesterday | :39:32. | :39:35.
as the new season got underway. We start our round-up of Saturday's | :39:36. | :39:38.
action with the champions. COMMENTATOR: | :39:39. | :39:51.
It's a combination between Christian Fuchs and Moussa, Vardy's effort is | :39:52. | :39:56.
blocked. An heroic block from little more. Mahrez, wide. | :39:57. | :40:02.
A brilliant bit of passing play and that's excellent defending from the | :40:03. | :40:09.
makeshift centre-back, Jake Livermore. | :40:10. | :40:15.
Flicked goalwards, saved by Schmeichel incredibly. Now it's in | :40:16. | :40:27.
though, prompting by Hernandez. Hernandez was in no doubt. Or was it | :40:28. | :40:38.
at Ahmadiyya Monday? -- Diomande. There will be hoping for an incident | :40:39. | :40:43.
free second half, but there's an incident straightaway. It's a | :40:44. | :40:47.
penalty for Leicester. As Tom Huddlestone flicked his ankle, the | :40:48. | :40:51.
contact was outside, but it's going to be Mahrez. Mahrez Hammers it | :40:52. | :40:58.
home, straight down the middle to make it Hull City one, Leicester | :40:59. | :41:03.
one. Hull City are coming again with Elmohamady. There's Snodgrass. Hull | :41:04. | :41:09.
City have the lead for a second time, there's no doubt about who | :41:10. | :41:14.
scored this one. Snodgrass got him said before firing through the whole | :41:15. | :41:18.
and the caretaker manager was doing a fine job with this stretched side. | :41:19. | :41:26.
A good delivery, all the way through and into the corner of the net. How | :41:27. | :41:37.
often does that happen? A little fortuitous, perhaps, but it's the | :41:38. | :41:42.
perfect start for the new era under Ronald Koeman. Mauricio Pochettino | :41:43. | :41:46.
has already made a tactical change, bringing on his new signing Yang Sun | :41:47. | :41:54.
up top. Plenty more for Everton to think about as Lamela guides the | :41:55. | :41:58.
ball into the corner of the net and already that tactical change has | :41:59. | :42:02.
reaped its rewards. Lamela has Spurs' equaliser. There's a degree | :42:03. | :42:08.
of concern amongst the Everton supporters that they might go and | :42:09. | :42:13.
steal the victory, and they almost do. Stekelenburg is outstanding with | :42:14. | :42:18.
the save. Wonderful goalkeeping from Stekelenburg. The team has worked | :42:19. | :42:27.
exceptionally hard today and the Everton supporters believe they | :42:28. | :42:30.
deserve something from it but they are being stretched again by Lamela. | :42:31. | :42:33.
The deflection has been turned over by Stekelenburg for his truly | :42:34. | :42:39.
outstanding save. Lamela can't believe this didn't go in. Fabulous | :42:40. | :42:41.
goalkeeping. Sterling being chased by Van | :42:42. | :43:00.
Aanholt, penalty for Manchester City. Few complaints from Sunderland | :43:01. | :43:04.
about the award of this penalty, to be taken by Sergio Aguero. 1-0. The | :43:05. | :43:12.
main man scores the first goal of Manchester City's season. | :43:13. | :43:21.
Borini, Rodwell, clever, Defoe, 1-1. Well, if you don't finish the | :43:22. | :43:30.
opposition off, there's always the possibility that they will come back | :43:31. | :43:34.
and bite you, especially if Jermain Defoe is in their team. And that is | :43:35. | :43:41.
exactly what has happened. Not the first Manchester City manager to | :43:42. | :43:45.
wear that expression. Sagna finding Navas well, Delph in the middle, | :43:46. | :43:54.
Iheanacho. Manchester City are back in front and it may be that it was | :43:55. | :44:00.
on an own goal. It has hit McNair. Nothing he could do about it. | :44:01. | :44:02.
Manchester City two, Sunderland one. Running directly and clipped by | :44:03. | :44:03.
Andrew Surman. Manchester City up and running but | :44:04. | :44:11.
far from straightforward. We saw the champions Leicester come unstuck | :44:12. | :44:16.
with what was a great performance against the odds from Hull City, but | :44:17. | :44:19.
how much can be read into the result as far as the champions are | :44:20. | :44:24.
concerned? Time will tell. The thing that stuck out for me was that they | :44:25. | :44:29.
seem wide-open at times. Last year, their strength was playing as a | :44:30. | :44:33.
team. Granted the loss of Kante, and Robert was being suspended had a big | :44:34. | :44:43.
impact had a big impact on the game against Hull City -- Huth. I'm sure | :44:44. | :44:47.
they will be looking to bounce back. The audition for Mike Phelan could | :44:48. | :44:51.
not have gone better at Hull City. Talk of new investors in the wings, | :44:52. | :44:56.
but whatever is going on, it needs to be sorted, because 13 fit senior | :44:57. | :45:00.
players they cannot carry on like that. It's impossible. He deserves | :45:01. | :45:04.
great credit and I know he's popular with the lads and he has said the | :45:05. | :45:08.
mother the game well, and they played for him, so credit to him. -- | :45:09. | :45:13.
he set them up for that game. He might just get the job. As | :45:14. | :45:23.
Manchester City, big statement to drop Joe Hart to the bench for pep | :45:24. | :45:26.
Guardiola. It is long-term future in doubt? He's been in this situation | :45:27. | :45:34.
before. He's the type of goalkeeper who has dug in and worked harder and | :45:35. | :45:38.
has proved his manager wrong to get back in the team. The way I see it, | :45:39. | :45:42.
right now, it is only option, because where else will he go? | :45:43. | :45:47.
Within England, you look at the top six, there's nowhere for him to go | :45:48. | :45:50.
at the minute. He has to be looking to get back in the side. If Willie | :45:51. | :45:55.
Cal Bolero started behind -- ahead of him, is he the answer? There is | :45:56. | :46:03.
talk that the Barcelona deal might be done that option. He might have | :46:04. | :46:08.
to look abroad. Even though he is a fighter, he won't want to be a | :46:09. | :46:11.
number two at this stage in his career. | :46:12. | :46:14.
Just a reminder that our coverage of the Olympics continues next | :46:15. | :46:16.
on BBC One, building up to the Men's 100m Final at 2.25am. | :46:17. | :46:20.
And if for some reason you want to see Gary | :46:21. | :46:23.
in his pants again, this season, Match of the Day is available | :46:24. | :46:26.
on the iPlayer from midnight every Sunday. | :46:27. | :46:29.
Match of the Day 2 will be there at midnight every Monday. | :46:30. | :46:35.
Here's the rest of yesterday's action, starting at | :46:36. | :46:37.
On the far side is Kingsley. Feeding Monteiro. | :46:38. | :46:56.
Good girl. Fernando Llorente with the header -- good ball. Leroy Fer | :46:57. | :47:08.
with his first Swansea goal might well have won the game for Swansea | :47:09. | :47:14.
on the opening day. Gudmundsson for Burnley. That was on target. What a | :47:15. | :47:21.
save by Fabianski, then Sam Vokes, and Fabianski again at the near | :47:22. | :47:26.
post. 'S Fabianski has made some important saves this afternoon, none | :47:27. | :47:27.
better than that one. The ball is deep towards Ramirez, | :47:28. | :47:47.
towards Negredo. Middlesbrough bumble -- bungle it in, and Alvaro | :47:48. | :47:52.
Negredo has got their first goal since returning to the Premier | :47:53. | :47:53.
League. What a start. Ramirez. Lovely little run from him, | :47:54. | :48:05.
and just off the outside of the post. A little burst of pace there, | :48:06. | :48:15.
but just a fraction too wide. Arnautovic would be the favourite to | :48:16. | :48:22.
take it. Perhaps erred and Shaqiri! 1-1 -- Shaqiri. It curls into the | :48:23. | :48:26.
bottom corner and the man who scored a wonderful goal for his country in | :48:27. | :48:30.
the European Championships in the summer has brought Stoke back on | :48:31. | :48:31.
level terms. Palace have won it back well and | :48:32. | :48:45.
Wilfred Zaha with a chance to stretch his legs. Zaha, and a top | :48:46. | :48:52.
stop from Foster. Wilfred Zaha, faster to the rescue, Connor Wickham | :48:53. | :48:55.
in there as well and West Brom somehow smuggle it away. It's not | :48:56. | :49:00.
been a game high on genuine chances. Wilfred Zaha with a wonderful | :49:01. | :49:04.
opportunity there though. McLean has six to aim for in the | :49:05. | :49:13.
centre and he has found one of them. Salomon Rondon has put West Brom | :49:14. | :49:20.
ahead. Excellent technique, to use the pace of the delivery to beat | :49:21. | :49:22.
Wayne Hennessey. Up against Targett. Deeney lurking. | :49:23. | :49:49.
And he arrives to smash it into the net. A dream start for the bother | :49:50. | :49:54.
manager in this opening game. Watford lead at Saint Mary 's. -- | :49:55. | :49:59.
Robert Watford manager. Southampton have pressed and pressed. Again | :50:00. | :50:07.
Gomez there. It is 1-1. A debut goal for Nathan Redmond. Art goes Gomez, | :50:08. | :50:14.
gets the touch and Redmond gets his third goal -- first goal for | :50:15. | :50:22.
Southampton. 1-1. Southampton on the break from the corner. He has caught | :50:23. | :50:30.
him and brought him down. Now, the referee has a decision to make and | :50:31. | :50:37.
it is read. It was cynical, and at this point you fancy the pace of | :50:38. | :50:41.
Shane Long, and I think what's knew that. It was a straight red. | :50:42. | :50:44.
A disappointed Ben Watson and we have seen the three boys coming up | :50:45. | :50:50.
from the championship, and over the last 24 hours, who can we say at | :50:51. | :50:54.
this stage, and I know it's early days, who is the best equipped to | :50:55. | :50:58.
stay up? If you look at the squads, you would say Middlesbrough, made a | :50:59. | :51:02.
lot of signings with good quality. I think Burnley have only signed a | :51:03. | :51:06.
couple of lads within inexperience and lost probably their best | :51:07. | :51:10.
midfielder of last season, so that I would expect them to do business | :51:11. | :51:13.
because they need to strengthen to compete. Yes, I mean, look, Hull | :51:14. | :51:19.
City up Robbie still favourites to go down. They need bodies, simple as | :51:20. | :51:26.
that -- are probably still. 13 fit is not enough. And I agree with | :51:27. | :51:30.
Danny Murphy, Middlesbrough best equipped. You talk about Burnley and | :51:31. | :51:35.
this is their third season in the top flight and each time they have | :51:36. | :51:38.
only lasted one campaign. If you are one of the fans, you would be | :51:39. | :51:43.
frustrated in terms of where is the ambition, and do they need to loosen | :51:44. | :51:47.
the purse strings to allow them a chance of staying up? I am sure they | :51:48. | :51:52.
are trying. He has said he is frustrated and what type of player | :51:53. | :51:56.
can they bring to Burnley with the wage structure? That is the trouble. | :51:57. | :52:00.
I am sure they are scaring the market. I totally agree. After what | :52:01. | :52:05.
happened last week they need to do something to strengthen the squad. | :52:06. | :52:09.
At this stage of the season may say don't look at the table until | :52:10. | :52:12.
September. But we are putting paid to that. | :52:13. | :52:15.
Today's two winners are setting the early pace, with | :52:16. | :52:17.
Jose Mourinho's Manchester United the only side so far to have won | :52:18. | :52:20.
No manager, no problem for Hull - they're in a Champions League spot! | :52:21. | :52:25.
They are in good company, with the top two from | :52:26. | :52:28.
the previous season, Leicester and Arsenal, | :52:29. | :52:30.
both losing their opening game for the first time since 1953. | :52:31. | :52:34.
Before we go, time for 2 Good, 2 Bad, which has a rather apt | :52:35. | :52:37.
We saw the Swansea boss, Francesco Guidolin, | :52:38. | :52:48.
Jamie Vardy impersonating a boxer. | :52:49. | :52:57.
Synchronised diving from Hull's Hernandez and Diomande | :52:58. | :52:59.
This fan at the Vitality, taking part in the rhythmic gymnastics. | :53:00. | :53:02.
We had a Klopp, skip and a jump at Arsenal. | :53:03. | :53:07.
And a sneaky photo finish, with Jose Mourinho. | :53:08. | :53:13.
Talking of finishes, that's it from us. | :53:14. | :53:15.
Danny, Jermaine, thanks for your company. | :53:16. | :53:16.
And with that incredible game at the Emirates rounding off | :53:17. | :53:19.
the opening weekend in spectacular fashion, we leave you with a look | :53:20. | :53:22.
back at other memorable starts to a brand new season. | :53:23. | :53:24.
This is Shearer. Fantastic goal from Alan Shearer. That is what the money | :53:25. | :53:43.
was for. Klinsmann. Who is a diver? Yes, it is a hat-trick. Beckham saw | :53:44. | :53:51.
somebody off his line. Gustavo Poyet. Slaven Bilic. | :53:52. | :53:56. |
