It is disappointing. We got ourselves back into the game. We

were saying here, I would have took a point at that stage and gone to

Commiserations, Roy. The game plan was executed as you planned. Was it

a moment of magic from a world-class player that undone England? The

honest, we could go on to win the game at that point. We had quite a

dominance. Of course, when they scored the second goal, time ran out

We shall try and sort it! Let's turn our attention to tonight's game. Two

sides play tonight who got off to a rotten start - we know the feeling.

GARY LINEKER: The game takes place in the Estadio das Dunas in Natal.

Japan will be looking to AC Milan's Honda. Greece will be happy to

score. They have fired blanks in six of their previous seven World Cup

matches. Their only win coming against ten-man Nigeria four years

ago. Colombia's win earlier today means Japan will leap-frog the Ivory

Coast if they win by two goals or more. Anything other than a Japanese

victory will send the Colombians through to the last 16. A defeat

would send Japan out. Greece would retain only a slim chance if they

lose. Japan have made it through the group

stage in two of the last three World Cups. Patrick Geary can tell us more

goals, but tire in the second half. They have conceded goals in second

halves, even just getting here. Again, in the first game. So

disappointing for them. They have to rectify that. Greece tend to be

dour, Rio. Against Japan, they are in a situation where they have to go

it. As we saw in the first game, they are quite a bore to watch. They

don't turn you on when you are watching them. They don't look like

scoring goals, so hopefully that will change today and we see a

better game and a few more goals. Mitroglou is back, we saw him for

going to see? The one that's disappointed so much at Fulham? Or

the one that helped get them here disappointed so much at Fulham? Or

the one that helped get them via the play-offs with three goals? He's

going to be a big player for them. I am not sure I would like to be

involved with this Greece team. They don't look like scoring, to be

honest. counterattack that Japan? Yes, they

play fast pressure, high pressure. My money is on Japan for today. It

is very difficult to change a game, knowing that is the way to play,

isn't it? They will need to open up more today. They just don't have any

skill up front. They are not creating. It would be a night where

to play as a forward in outside! You would get this interest quickly,

wouldn't you? Quite possibly! I imagine the mood back home is very

glum. Thank you for staying up so late to watch these teams that know

exactly what they have to do to continue in the competition. We will

It is their first World Cup meeting. Greece have just won the tree in

Makoto Hasebe has been passed fit to play. He is massive for the team.

Dimitris Salpingidis has been axed. Giorgos Samaras, from Celtic, will

Japan was the first country to qualify for these finals, by the

way. There is Fernando Santos. He has never suffered back-to-back

defeats in charge. He conceded only six goals in 12 qualifiers, but they

were very open in defence in the first game of this competition.

Japan will get us under way. Dimitris Salpingidis will want to

come on, after having been dropped. Shinji Kagawa will be disappointed

to be on the bench, having scored five goals in international is in

the last months. No one has morphed -- has had more shots on goal for

Greece than Giorgos Samaras. There is Eiji Kawashima, who played

so well in the last World Cup. We are waiting for the officials to say

This stadium holds 42,000 people. There are not as many seats empty as

Up front, Shinji Okazaki can play up the middle or play wide. He has

started wide with Yuya Osako playing up the middle.

Makoto Hasebe was out from December until the last day of the season in

the Bundesliga with a knee injury. Orestis Karnezis is the Greek

goalkeeper, on loan from Grenada. It was interesting there, they were

trying to get the ball through the Keisuke Honda. He is there going to

player. He is a very good player. I would like to see him playing higher

up the pitch, but they want him there, pulling the strings.

The first shot of the game is blocked and comes bouncing back out

to Hotaru Yamaguchi. Indeed Julie, Greece looks suspect down the

left-hand side. Jose Holebas looked nervous at the

last European Championship. He made a lot of mistakes. Hotaru Yamaguchi

Panagiotis Kone is a player who has impressed me. They can pass the

ball, but in the final third, it don't have anyone to finish it off.

Kostas Katsouranis notched up a Greek international record at the

World Cup with 17 passes. He is their most capped player.

The Japanese side has not changed much in the last few years.

There has been a big change in Japanese football over the last ten

years, the number of players who come and play in Europe. Three of

their back four are currently based in Europe, plus the goalkeeper.

The goalkeeper keeps it in. Kostas Mitroglou scored five goals in

qualifying for Greece. Giorgos Samaras with that touch. I would

like to see him play as a centre forward, but he plays on the left.

It just shows due, you don't need to play down the middle. His contract

has run out at Celtic. Strong challenge on the Panagiotis

Kone by the Right, Atsuto Uchida. This is the first corner of the

game. You have been in these finals before

a wondergoal if he puts it in from there, but that is the threat he

has. He is capable of wondergoals. Relegated with Bologna

and he was in tears on the pitch. He is all over him there, isn't he?

His last international goal was at Euro 2012, but the manager persists

with him because he believes he can give them something different down

this left-hand side - height, presence. He has pace as well.

in-between position, very difficult to pick up.

Honda played on the right-hand side for Milan, and really warmed to the

task when I saw them. Did well enough towards the end of the

conscious that they gave the ball away too often, I think that's what

cost Shinji Kagawa his place in the side. They are trying to be calmer

foot. It looked like it was going to end up in the top right-hand corner.

Great effort. He gets around it just too much. We

thought we would have goals. Greece haven't kept a clean sheet in seven

games at a World Cup Finals. And Japan, over the last 12 months, in

18 games, have kept just two clean sheets. Here's Holebas. He was

looking for Mitroglou in the middle and it came too near to the

goalkeeper, Kawashima. That's Holebas down this left-hand side.

It's as if that chance has stung them into life. That was not a good

enough cross. That is the problem with these full-backs when they get

into these high positions - they need the quality at the end of it.

with Yasuhito Endo in the side. It gives more freedom to Keisuke Honda.

bench a couple of times in qualifying. He played well.

I think it was Kostas Manolas was getting a bit too physical. He has

come onto the scene this season, the 23-year-old.

We have seen lots of Japanese supporters around Brazil. 1.5

million people of Japanese descent live in the country. They came over

to either alone or a work that copy plantations in a deal between the

Torosidis and Shinji Okazaki. That is a good effort. We have seen a lot

of goalkeepers struggling to hold onto the ball here. He deals with

that in the end. Good quality by Keisuke Honda, just not in the

corner enough. It has been pouring with rain in the

sunshine resort! After the rain in the opening match, a massive crater

opened up, swallowing 20 houses! Has he pulled a muscle? Has he taken a

hit? He is capable of giving them the edge that they need. Film fans

will probably disagree with that, he was so disappointing. He came with a

knee injury to Craven Cottage, barely played a game and then

slipped away. It was just a dig in the ribs. They hurt, they are

painful. I'm not sure he needs to be down this long with it! He has taken

a bit of arrest. He was not nearly fit enough in the full jersey. Have

you ever been to the World Cup, to plan things out to finish first or

second in the group? You knew what was in front of you. Generally, in

the England shirt, you need to win. If you can win your matches, it

takes care of itself. What did you think about the England performance?

It was very disappointing. We showed a bit of dirt, but looking at the

goals that week conceded, look at Mario Balotelli, if you switch for

one you get honest. Basic mistakes in defending. If you show your

number to the opponent, queue be beaten. We know all about Luis

Suarez. -- you will be beaten. Maya Yoshida very rarely lets them

down. When the ball comes into central areas, Japan just lacks that

little bit of quality sometimes. The header goes over from Yoshito Okubo.

He was not picked up. Again, look, great ball in and it is not a very

good finish. If they could just get that right, they would be in front

in this match. Yasuyuki Konno is distraught!

Greece are warming up substitute. I think Kostas Mitroglou will not be

able to continue. His bad 2014 continues.

he made no attempt to play the ball. That's Katsouranis's red card of

this campaign. His team-mates are trying to do the best without him.
