until we almost went through in the semi-final in the World Cup. So,

like I say, we just have to perform. It is not the endeavour, but we have

to have the quality. To take the game to them and believe.

Michael, England has not clicked. They admitted. What are you looking

for them to improve on? Poverty. Coming out of the traps early and

the ball retention. They have to keep hold of the ball. They have to

get into the dangerous areas. When they lose that ball u, they have to

take the game to them and to make things happen.

expect to see her. He is starting, what do you make of that? It is a

last-gasp for Hope. I think she feels she needs Sophie Bradley for

you worry. An injury so close. Only two weeks ago. When you get that

make of the changes and the risk that Hope Powell is taking? It is a

risk, but I am pleased that Hope has done something so different. It

looks like she is taking the game to France. That is what we have to do.

Going with two forwards, with lots of attacking players. We have to

make France think about things. We have been talking on the fact that

Ellen White has been isolated. Now she has Toni Duggan to help her out.

There is Karen Carney and Ellen White. So it could be exciting. I

think we could score lots of goal, let's hope not to concede any.

I think you I said 6-5. That is concerning but it is OK if we win.

Michael, what do you make, the fact that they have gone 4-4-2.

Well, we have been crying out for it. We have been saying that what is

Hope Powell doing. She must change it. Now they have the opportunity

from the start. Karen Carney, I thought was positive on the field.

Taking players on down the right-handside. There is Toni

Duggan, a breath of fresh air. Fantastic. She got the goal to boot

as well. Things like that. It filters through to the players it is

You wanted to see Toni Duggan starting? I did. She created

bit of, she wants to get the ball. She is creative, lively. I am

pleased she is starting and starting up front. I think that she can cause

the French defence a few problems. We know France have topped the

group, we were fascinated by the team that they would put out. Six

changes seem as lot, but there are big names in there? That is right.

Look at Necib. Eugenie Le Sommer. Elodie Thomis has bags of pace.

Steph Houghton will have to be on her toes for that one. You look at

Sandrine Soubeyrand. Amandine Henry plays for Lyon. So there will be a

great understanding. They know each other very well.

When she's not keeping clean sheets in the heart of England defence, she

is changing sheets at the care home run by her parents.

Hiya! You OK? Straight away I have to go up to all of the ladies and

gentlemen and give them a cuddle. A lot of them like to give me a kiss

on the cheek. I have a chat with all of them. Generally, they ask how my

football is going. On Monday I fly to Sweden. Two hours

away? I try to lighten up their day, really? Have you been to Skegness?

One of the guys I looked after. He used to be semiprofessional. When I

told him he said, you would not last ten minutes.

She would run up and down this street when eight, nine, ten. Always

kicking the ball against the wall across the road. The neighbours

always mooning, but maybe it has paid off. She's worked hard. I tried

to get Sophie to play tennis. She ribs me about this all the time. I

took her down the road. She had tennis lessons, she was a good

tennis player, but that was not her dream. It was football. I was at

football camps with my brother. One of the guys coaching saw me playing,

he said do you not play for a team. I wanted to. I told me dad, he was

like tennis, but I said I just want to play football.

I sent her on tennis lessons. The coach said she spent more time

kicking the tennis ball than hitting it over the net.

The crowd were so amazing. Especially basil at Wembley. Looking

up. Normal you see only a few hundred people at the games but the

atmosphere, the crowds. It was amazing. I always have to find my

mum and dad in the National Anthem. I am singing it from the heart. I

have to find where mum and dad and my family are sat. Then that is it.

I'm focussed on the game. So that is Sophie Bradley. A

fantastic bubbly character. Somebody that you know well, sue myth. How

many other players have to plans work with football? Sophie is a

lovely girl. I am pleased she is starting. She has done so well in

the build up. About u it is difficult for her. She works in the

care home part-time. Then fitting in training. A lot of the other girls

do a similar thing. Some work in schools, some work as skills

coaches. That is difficult. You have a nine to five job, then the

training to fit in around. I know that the England contract has

helped, but it is difficult, but the girls manage to do it.

Michael, how much of a risk is it starting her and a number of other

players out with injury? Karen Carney has been out, Casey Stoney

has had a hamstring, and Steph Houghton. There are a number of

them? The coach has said are you ready to play 90 minutes. I am

certain that they said yes but they know it will be a risk but they will

be heavily strapped up. Fingers crossed that you have a fit and

healthy squad. It is a huge game. They need importance, but with Steph

Houghton as well. Is she 100% fit? But when you come up against a great

side like France, who are, from what we have seen so far, they must be on

their game. And England have not to be reminded

that they are yet to beat France. There was a friendly win at Plough

Lane, but their memories are all too clear of the painful exit in the

last World Cup. It is a kick to the stomach and to

the teeth, that game. The chance to reach the semi-finals

and go one better than ever before. It is hard to reflect on.

say I am prepared to take one. I felt confident. I thought we had

done well in the game. I, yeah, I would do it again. It is obviously

upsetting to see it. It took a long time to overcome it. You know how

hard you work for years to take that step into a semi-final, but if need,

I would stick my hand up, but I still had the confidence that the

next one may go in. There was controversy about the

process of taking the penalties. Some did not put hands up and

players like you did. Some people say you expect strikers

and midfielders to feel confident, but it depends on the way that the

game has gone for those players. You cannot, like Karen Carney said, you

cannot replicate the pressure. How you are going to feel after 120

minutes, but again, penalties are a lottery. It helped when I saw Messi

miss a penalty in a game later. I thought, if he can do it.

One of the few England players that has played to their potential is

Eniola Aluko. The trainee lawyer is a deep thinker in the game.

feels that? I think that mental strength now we have to tap into it.

We have to really believe that we can do it. I think that belief is

one thing but acting on it is another. I think that hopefully

every player has the mental strength to really go out and perform under

pressure with all eyes on us. You must be confident, personally,

having scored. Does it give you an edge of confidence going into the

game? Absolutely. Goals bring confidence. I visualise positive

things on the pitch. In training I looked at the goal. I tried to

visualise different scenarios. How does it work? What do you see?

It may be going past the left back or the right back. Seeing somebody

thit in, or a ball being passed in. Taking it from the keeper, putting

it in the back of the net. Little things that happen. In the game you

start to visualise it and see yourself doing it.

What are your memories against France? Mixed. We were obviously

knocked out by France in the 2011 World Cup. It was disappointing. I

think that I balled my eyes out after the game. I was upset. Since

then we played in a friendly in October. We drew 2-it. A fair

assessment of that game was that we gifted them two goals. There is a

lot of heart to take from the fell. We can perform against them. We know

their players inside out. They probably know us inside out. On that

sense it is that we are on a level playing field.

So this is one of the biggest games in your life? Absolutely. Knock-out

stages were played before, but this is a knock-out game. This is like

playing in the final. So, waned they are through, lose and

they are out. What are you looking for? I would like to see England

take the game to France. I think that the weak point is Corine

Franco. I would like to see Eniola Aluko have a go at her. Make her

make a decision. Get the balls in the box and hopefully score. For me

it is control and possession. In the mid-field dealing with their

strength in Sandrine Soubeyrand and now with Amandine Henry but also

Gaetane Thiney. It will be important for Anita Asante and Fara Williams

to be ieth and to dictate the play in there.

I think it was a gallant effort. We dug deep. At the end of the day

The World Cup qualifiers are coming up, are you the person to lead

England through it? Well, yes. I have the under 19s, the qualifying

coming up. We have to regroup. We have to go again.

Do you have the appetite? I think so. We don't like losing. I players

will have learned lessons, the staff, we have to do better next

time. I would like to thank the fans, 1.2 million watches, thank you

very much. Do you feel it was an opportunity

missed? It is the biggest platform that British women's football has

had? I have said that the gap is narrowing. The tournament have

proved that. The results improved that. There are no easy games. We

have had three tough games. The favourites have been in tough games.

Germany losing. It is good for women's football, but for us

tonight, in this tournament, it is not good enough.

Fay, e, what do you make of her -- Faye, what do you make of the

comments, it was a gal gallant -- gallant play from the players?

it is still not good enough. For so long, we were good but to only get

one point. This was a huge platform to push the game on with the

coverage it is getting with so many more people reporting on the game.

I'm disappointed as a former player to see. I know that the girls who

uld have had the effort, but that is not enough. It needs the quality.

The strength and the depth of the other teams. France are on a

different level today. In the World Cup in 2011, I remember thinking how

they attack at pace, the threat all the time. It is constant, wave after

wave in the games. It was hard then. Today it was on another level from

then. They have moved on, we have not. Maybe we have had too many

players struggling with injury. Not confident. It looked the case for

large parts in the first few games. Did we take too many injured

players, or gambles? There are many questions to look back and learn

from. It was a gamble, when Hope Powell

named the squad, six players had injuries. Two players had not played

for months. Two players had not played and were not fit. Some had

come back from injury, they are not played in a week. Was that partly

responsible? I think so. Those players not playing, thinking why

are they not starting but Hope Powell must have listened to the

dong tors but for -- doctors but for me it was a crucial point in the

game. We started to play well in the second half. Then like Faye said,

they are clinical. We did not have that precise passing, that finish

that France had. For me, that is your winners there.

We didn't see many younger players. Toni Duggan got a chance. You were

calling for it earlier on. Do you think it is the end of an era?

think so. I think you have to look to the future. The 2009 again, there

was five under 19 players in the squad. Give them their opportunity.

They are good enough. That is why they are there. These experienced

players who have played over 100 games, maybe it is time to look at

the younger players. Give them the opportunity. If you don't you will

be left behind further. It is quality sides like France, you have

seen the squad that they have got. They have quality everywhere. The

girls mentioned it themselves. They have streets ahead of what England

are. Give the youngsters the opportunity. If not, they wait until

they are 23, 24, then it is too late.

Let's hear from the England captain, Casey Stoney talking to Sally.

What went wrong tonight? It is not through lack of effort. We tried our

hardest. Credit to France, they were probably better than us. I can only

apologise we did not put on more of a display. We fought. We kept going.

We really tried. It was not our tournament. We will go away, reflect

and see what we come back for. We have to bounce back.

You were leading England in the tournament. I know how important it

has been to you. What went wrong from the start.

We never got going. Personally, I am gutted. Gutted for

the girls, for all the hard work we have put in. For the supporters that

have travelled this way. We always try. We just did not have the

quality in the three games. I think that we never really hit the

ground running, but, it is not through lack of of the. We always

give 100%, but not for this tournament.

This was a France side missing key players. The Gulf was wide? They are

blistering pace upfront. It caught us out. Saying that, maybe we could

have made more of the half chances that we had.

They are a good side. They have not been tipped to win it for nothing.

They could win it nour. Too many players carrying injuries?

I don't think so. Obviously Steph Houghton and myself were injured

beforehand. I would like to think that we were strong. I will reflect

on myself, think on what I can do better.

How do England improve on this performance? We need to go away, to

analyse what we need to do. To work harder at clubs, to come back in

September for the World Cup qualifiers. To pick ourselves up, to

say this is not good enough if you want to win trophies. Casey Stoney

always honest there. She has worked so hard to be fit for the start of

the tournament with three games in the week, but the quality has not

been there. She said that herself. That the

quality was not there. We did not turn up to the negative. We wanted

England to win, but there was nothing to be positive about. That

is all we are saying. We don't want people to see through us if we are

going to lie. There was nothing there, the football was poor. One

opportunity in 90 minutes. That is not good enough to go into the big

competitions. You have to come up with the quality. You must give your

chance to make the opportunities. Faye, the defensive platform was not

there. They are always looking vulnerable at the back? The hardest

thing is that if someone is running at you with pace with the technical

ability to switch sides and change foot, other teams, France have it

but even Spain had it. They were so threatening looking going forward.

We did not seem to have it. Here is the first goal. It was a catalogue

of errors. That is deep in their own half, France. For them to slip

through us easily. The quality of challenges were not good enough.

Putting the ball into the danger area. Not tight enough. She had a

few seconds to think about, I can half turn, then put a shot in at the

low post. You cannot allow space like that. Casey will watch this

game back. She will think she has not got tight in that instance.

It is a catalogue of errors. You look at Fara Williams. Would she, in

hindsight, put the ball out rather than play it back. Steph Houghton

does great getting back but should she have put it in the goal? Could

they have closed down. Three or four players will look at that to say

that they could have done better. The second goal was fantastic.

That is what she can do. This is when England were playing well. They

hit us on the counter. Louisa Necib caused problems all

night. There is Louisa Necib picking up. There is nobody there with her.

Steph Houghton has to close down. Sophie Bradley, you can see she is

coming out. You can see the threat of Elodie

Thomis there. A huge amount of space in the

middle. Then with Louisa Necib with the quality to get it out on the

right foot. Half a yard, curling it. That is how clinical she is.

I thought that Karen Bardsley had a fantastic game.

She was a rare bright spot for England in goal, but Wendie Renard,

we knew all about her. We saw her run against Spain. She scored a

goal. It was almost a carbon cope. England did not pick her up.

That is something that England would have high lighted in the meetings.

Bur here there is one person closing down. There are two people there,

Jill Scott and Steph Houghton are challenging her but I would have

liked to have seen Jill Scott closer.

There are six players around her, surely somebody can block her sight.

You have to get your body in front. We saw the threat in the Spain game

before this one as well. England did nothing about it.

There were more chances as well. We could sit here all night looking at

the French chances. It will not make Sue feel better. She is looking

devastated. I thought that Karen Bardsley made

great saves in the first half too. She made it difficult.

It was unmarked completely at the back. I think she made good saves.

their quarter-final place for granted.

It is a better start to the second half from Russia. Here is Morassova.

A lovely effort again from Bo kwushgs ete. All of the instincts of

a classic goal-scorer. Losada. Not as much width to the Spanish

player in the second half, but here is Martin. It is Losada again. It is

opened up for the shot. Not too far away from a second goal. It's low

but with a cross in. Cleared away. Russia happy to see that one the

wrong side of the woodwork. Less pace about Spain in the second

goal. Hermosa in the end, looking keen to

score in the end. She scored against England. It really started England

on the way to what has been a fairly shocking campaign.

powerful is that they are out after a 3-0 defeat against France. Kelly

Smith has been talking to Sally. Reflect for a moment for me on that

game, Kelly? Devastating to lose in the way that we did. We gave it

everything. It has not clicked for us. I think that individually we

have to look at our own performens -- performances, it has not been

good enough. You say you don't know why but I

don't think that the quality is there for England? I don't think it

is there for England. We have come here, it has not worked for us. We

have to go away and think about individual performances. Watch the

games and learn from it and move forward.

Is it difficult to stay united as a team when that is going on? No. We

are all in it together. No-one is going to go away from the crowd and

try to do it by themselves. We win as a team, we lose at a team team.

That is always how it is. Everyone is close, we get on. It has just not

been our year. Do you think at that a fully fit

Kelly Smith would have made it a different ending to the story?

don't know. It would have been nice to come in and rare in at the races
