Good evening. Over the next two- and-a-half weeks, the 12 best weeks

on the Continent will fight it out for the title of European champions.

We will bring you live action, starting with Sweden verses Denmark.

level and pick the trophy up? There are quality side and there. There

are stand out players fought each side. They want to make things

happen. There are flair players so it will be very interesting. Sue,

you played in every match up until the final. Thank you for reminding

me! I guess that is one of your main memories, but it was a

difficult start for England, wasn't it? Probably my main memory is that

we got all prepared and got beaten by Italy. My man was flying out for

the quarter-finals and we went home. My mum. But the initial feeling was,

what's happened to us? Thankfully, we did OK and got to the final.

up yet and you haven't studied the format on the BBC's Board website,

don't worry too much because I will talk you through it right now. --

shining. It is looking very yellow. This is the spiritual home for

women's football here in Sweden. It is the National Stadium for the

women's team so what better place to kick off their 20 their team

campaign against Denmark. Sweden are one of the favourites so there

is huge expectation tonight. What attendances can we expect,

particularly tonight? Well, all three of Sweden's group matches are

completely sold out. Tonight's match against Denmark and the other

against Italy and Finland - the capacity here this big and people

were queuing up outside just after 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

have been in Sweden for a few days, what has the atmosphere been like

in terms of the newspapers? Has there been a lot of coverage? Has

that hut -- country take in the tournament to heart? They

absolutely have. In Gothenburg, it is one of the seven host cities for

the tournament and out and about there is a real buzz in the City.

There are hundreds of banners and flags all over the city. There are

fan zones. As well as having 18 hours of daylight here, everyone is

here for the event. Another big reason for the excitement is one of

the biggest names in world football, Pia Sundhage, is in the newspapers

and the front pages of magazines. She is responsible for leading the

USA to gold last year. Let us see if Sweden can deliver. Thank you.

There is a good reason why Sweden are one of the favourites. You have

played so many times against Sweden and in Sweden. What you make of the

fact the tournament is they? They will put on a fantastic show as

they have been very much behind the National game. I have played

against Sweden a few times and in the Champions League Against other

Swedish teams and other Swedish cities, the companies and the press

get behind it. Crowds came out to support their team has so I think

they will put on a great show. From previous tournaments, I remember

the Swedish fans being so imaginative in the way they support

their team. Really friendly and a great atmosphere around the games.

We were even adopted in Germany. You have nailed your top mast in

you behind the scene to see what has driven the players to reach

actually got Player of the Season for Arsenal later. The fact she was

dropped, and battled back. It shows the character she is. There are

other players for England who are a concern ahead of the game. Kelly

Smith, the best known of them. Not expecting her to start? She is a

phenomenal player. She can change the game. She has had so many

injuries and had to battle back, often before major tournaments,

which she did in the World Cup 2011. This time, it sounds like she might

be more of an impact player. She has had four months of not playing

football. The last think that Hope Powell needed was Sophie Bradley to

be injured. She caught her ankle. When there is no one around you,

you fear the worst when a player goes down. She is a warrior, Sophie

Bradley, she is one of the fittest, youngest and took his players at

the back. You did not want to pick up another injury. You can see

England against Spain on Friday on BBC Three at 730 for the kick-off,

in Sweden and they have done well. It will be a tough game. I hope we

can get out as the winner. You want to show everybody you are the best

team in the Nordic countries. They will be tough games for us. If you

so many times. What is she like? She has 121 caps. Probably one of

the hardest players to mark. She is intelligent with her runs. Her

timing is exquisite. She is a striker with so much more to her

again. She is in the right place at the right time. She can make runs

in the Channel. She can also do link-up play with the midfield. And

her quality of finishing. She scored twice against England.

It did get under way with a 0-0 draw between Italy and Finland, but

the tournament really started tonight. There is a sell-out crowd.

The competition might have been just about owned by Germany over

the years, but Sweden fancy it this time. If performances can go close

to matching the enthusiasm of the country getting behind the team,

they have a genuine chance. An international derby to start with.

just across the water from home would give us, Lucy, quite a story.

Sophie have a great relationship. We have played for a couple of

years for our country. She had an unfortunate injury but the X-ray

some point. She will be missed, but we have players who come to an

equally good job, so it is disappointing for Sophie, it give

someone else and opportunity. Asante can play centre half, others

have come in. As much as it will be difficult, there are great centre-

half signed will be looking forward to playing with. At the last

European Championship, England made it to the final where they suffered

a 6-2 defeat to Germany. A painful lesson was learned. You have to

experience that pressure to be on the receiving end of a 6-2 defeat,

to say that will not happen again. We were in it for large spells of

the game and they won 3, four, 5, 6. It looks like a threshing --

thrashing. It was four years ago and we have heard the World Cup

experience since then. You have to use what is fresh and relevant.

This city has taken the England team to its heart, particularly

their captain. It is not great, because I do not look great in

action shots, but it is good to see yourself on the side of the hotel.

I seem to be popping up here and there, I have come a long way to

the 2005 European Championship, where I did not play. Now I am so

proud. Hope for the, we can make the country proud.
