first of a weekly series coming to you every Saturday. Georgie Best has

done it again. Look at his face! Just look at his face! Unbelievable.

Absolutely magnificent. Sergio Aguero. Welcome to Match Of The Day

at the start of a new season and a new time with a few new ideas. At

the heart of the programme will be the football action. He was still

shaking with excitement. Sturridge! The Premiership season is underway

again, just another 37 weeks to go. Sergio Aguero on target. Sid Goodson

gives Swansea the lead again. If anything is trying to tell you

football was far better ten, 20, 30, 40 years ago, very politely say to

them nonsense. Fifty years ago this weekend

the first Match Of The Day was We're still here and we've got six

games for you, five more than 1964. # It's not unusual to be loved by

anyone. # It's not unusual to have fun with anyone.

# But if I find you have changed at any time, it is not unusual to find

out I am in love with you. The only Welshman we can afford is Robbie

Savage. He is here with Alan Shearer.

We start at Goodison Park where Everton met

Arsenal, two clubs who've graced the top flight for the past 50 years.

It's a fixture that in recent times has produced more than

Oh, wonderful. Tony Adams, what a finish! Wayne Rooney, what a goal!

And it is the captain who has the gold. Still Lukaku. 2-0.

Arsenal won more games on the road than any other side last

season but haven't beaten Everton in their last four league meetings.

Arsenal's next game and Steven Naismith and Lukaku play again

today. The Everton side is changed by two. Kevin Mirallas plays.

Coleman is fit to start. Arsenal were busy at Besiktas on Tuesday and

there are four changes. Flamini comes in and Alex

Oxlade-Chamberlain, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil. Interesting to see

how Sanchez does up top for Arsenal. It will be worth a look to see where

Lukaku plays in this first half. In April he played on the right-hand

side and butchered Nacho Monreal. Chambers has had an excellent start

to his Arsenal career. Two very good games under his belt already. Steven

Pienaar was hurt by the teenager's challenge. This looks like a fresh

concern. It is concerned enough to see him replaced.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on his own in claiming a deflection. It

will be a huge sigh of relief or Seamus Coleman. It was a rather

impudent arm in the air to claim a corner.

Lukaku got the call to leave it. Good job he did because Coleman was

flying in to score. It is a confident full-back who tells the

main man who scores goals to leave it alone. Barry took up a beautiful

position and Lukaku was onside. Coleman was certainly onside. The

header had too much power. Seamus Coleman managed seven goals

last season, his best in a single campaign.

Kevin Mirallas cannot find the net. Roberto Martinez is asking why it is

not a corner. He did seem to slip for my money from that angle. If the

court? The last Everton manager to bring the club a trophy, Joe Royle,

is back at the club as youth development assistance. That was

Chambers totally taking out Kevin Mirallas. Everton free kick. On that

viewing it looks more like a collision rather than anything more

sinister than that. It is Kevin Mirallas and that was

not far away. Wojciech Szczesny was not sure about that.

Sanchez is taking the wide route with Mesut Ozil.

Naismith, a brilliant goal. Too easy from an Arsenal point of view, but

brilliantly worked by Everton. This is where it started. Lukaku wanted

to hold on more than Per Mertesacker. Looking in the middle

to see where Naismith is. He looks a fraction of side. That is what

Arsene Wenger will talk about later. It was a lovely, weighted pass, but

Naismith should have waited a bit longer. Not that it matters now

because the goal stands. He is already having words with Michael

Oliver. He does not want to have words back. Not one. Winning away to

their rivals in the top five was Arsenal's Achilles heel last season.

Olivier Giroud got too much contact on the ball. Arsenal look a little

bit brighter even if his expression is not much sunnier.

cleared. Finally, Tim Howard is called into action.

That was so close to being an almighty chat for Everton to wrap

the game up once and for all thanks to Leighton Baines' endeavour. There

is a push from Jack Wilshere and perhaps a push from Debuchy, but

Leighton Baines kept ploughing on. box, not just defenders. The

midfielders are doing their defensive duties superbly.

Finally Arsenal have got it in. Guess who? Aaron Ramsey in the right

place again. Now we might have a finish to this game because it

certainly is not finished yet. Everton seemed to be a bit static

and switched off in defence. Everton seemed to be a bit static

and There is noise again from the Arsenal section.

It is in. Olivier Giroud has scored. Jagielka misstep. It was Monreal's

ball in. It should have been dealt with. Jagielka mistimed his jump.

Arsenal have found a way to get back into this. Everton fans have just

seen their team through the game away. Is that the case of 80 minutes

excellent and ten minutes what happened? What happened is we ran

out of energy and it was a feeling of wanting the game to end. We are

not that kind of side where we can sit deep and profound. We are

dynamic and we need to play with the ball. I was delighted with their

performance for 80 minutes, the first half was phenomenal in the way

we took control of the game. We looked a real threat and we kept

Arsenal very quiet. 2-0 is dangerous because the opposition will throw

everything at you with a bit of hope and if that hope gets in the net,

you are in trouble. It is difficult to come back at this place when you

are a 2-0 down. Everything went against us in the first half and

just before half-time to concede the second goal we had a mountain to

climb. But there was a foul and it was offside and we took it well and

we responded in the way we wanted to play. Does that feel like a win? I

think we played a much better second half and put the pressure on them

all the time which was important for us. It does not feel like a win, but

at the end it was great team spirit. dangerous score, I was fought it was

a good score. Arsenal coming back. Very much like last week they did

not play well for the vast majority of the game, they kept going,

getting the three points, this week the same. They kept going, getting a

point, probably not deserving it. In the first half they were poor. From

Everton's point of view, I thought they were brilliant. Very similar

tactics to last season, Lukaku on the right-hand side, Naismith

upfront. The centre halves did not have anyone to mark. You were

alarmed by some of the slackness from Arsenal? I was. I could not

work out what they were doing defensively, so poor. No pressure on

the ball, Barry knocking a very good ball in, Coleman on the end of it.

We have Ozil circles, he should stay with his man, that is not the only

mistake, you cannot play offside with no pressure on the ball.

Mertesacker comes running out. Lukaku could've headed it in, it was

Coleman. Very poor from Arsenal. Arsenal change their system, not

playing in out and out striker, Sanchez playing centrally, we are

not accustomed to seeing him play there. It did not work, they had no

presence there. Nobody to attack the ball is in the box. The ball comes

out wide, the first thought is get it in, but why? There is no Arsenal

player in the box. I don't know where Sanchez is. Debuchy gets the

ball, there is Sanchez. Can he help me? Help me find a pass? His arms

are right up, will saying, where are you? The same happens for the

Everton goal. All out wide, only really Ramsey in there. Wilshere

tries to get in there. There is Sanchez. It is great strength from

Lukaku, nudging Mertesacker off-the-ball, too quick for

Chambers. The great power, direct, a great run from Naismith. Fortunate,

it is offside, the linesman should spot it. Lukaku was brilliant.

Arsenal trying to get the ball in the box. Not one touch in the

18-yard box from Sanchez. That all changed at half-time. Wenger

bringing Giroud on. They have someone, when the player pixies fed

up, after 30 seconds. -- when the player picks his head up. That was a

poor pass, the first thought get the ball in, this time Giroud was too

strong. Arsenal kept going, a poor performance, not a good sign. Are we

underselling Everton? I fought they were brilliant for 75 minutes. A lot

of talk from Arsene Wenger, being defensive about Jack Wilshere? You

had a close look? I think he looks very frustrated, Ramsey has

overtaken him. He finds himself in good positions, the lack of a killer

instinct. Passing and moving, has not got the yard of pace. Great

under pressure, receiving the ball inside areas. Playing it simple.

Knows what he's going to do, around the corner, continuing his run. Just

a lack of pace. This could have been a red card. Diaz that aggression.

Could have been a red card another day. He was substituted after 70

minutes. Bringing Carzola on. They come back to draw 2-2. The big

question is, will he stay in the team if everybody is fit? There are

big question marks. I think Wenger has acknowledged it, and Jack has as

well, he has to improve. He has had his fair share of injuries,

averaging 20 games. Give him a run of games, he can be a pivotal

player. 45 years ago this very month

a young commentator made his Match Today he was back there for the game

between Crystal Palace and West Ham. The crowd at Selhurst Park in August

1969 were in celebratory mood, the team was about to play their first

match ever in the top flight of English football, the First

Division, simple titles in those days. Two-day's selection by the

caretaker shows a three changes from last week, Delaney coming in for

Scott Dann, Barry Bannan for the suspended Jason Puncheon. Joe Ledley

was injured in the warm up. Lady luck is not on Sam Allardyce's side,

losing James Collins to Wayne needless red card, in training Kevin

Nolan injured his shoulder this week. James Tomkins has been at the

club since he was a boy. The new boy is Mauro Zarate.

A contest between two of the losers on the opening day, both sides

contributing to their own failure, West am not getting shots on target,

Crystal Palace by amazingly conceding goals on two set pieces. I

say amazingly, very few occasions did that happen under Tony Pulis.

That is a good, well hit cross. Good stuff after he sorted himself out. A

brave attempt. Not easy for anybody. People speculating on who may come,

possibly difficult for that man, Keith Millen, could be out of the

job. I know Palace want to keep him, and the new manager may be invited

to do that. As part of the agreement, he probably should be.

There is the man who came late into the match, now hurt. Jess court buys

Arata -- he was Jess court by Mauro Zarate.

That is a nice turn. Ricardo Vaz Te. Zarate had the extra touch, he did

not want it. Just trying to teams of up. Noble looking for some movement.

scoring. A good shot initially by noble, and even better one,

spreading the getting a hand to it. -- Julian Speroni getting a hand to

Teddy Sheringham the attacking coach for West Ham, used to know where the

net was. Stewart Downing, he can have a crack. He does! That is the

way to do it. You could see the intention, a more importantly he

could see the gap, placing the shot quite beautifully. Nobody challenged

him, they were backing away. Crystal Palace, what is your answer?

This particular Saturday, it is worth noting West Ham have not won

here since 1991. That is the first corner of the second half. Number

seven in the match. After the crossbar! -- that is off the

crossbar. The goalkeeper was nowhere, partly off the post. A

really good jump by Tomkins, unlucky. He has been with West Ham

since he was a seven-year-old. Barry Bannan. Marouane Chamakh. Oh, yes!

What a clean strike. Selhurst Park is suddenly a very different place.

Dispatched with aplomb. Could not have been better placed. The next

5-10 minutes should be interesting in terms of West Ham's approach.

Very nearly did score another goal, West Ham, suddenly it is 2-1, you

think... . All except Carlton Cole behind the ball. Barry Bannan, nice

switch. Good strike. Back on his left.

Stewart Downing defending at right back. A foul. That is number three,.

A gift for Carlton Cole. Carlton Cole did not stand on ceremony. It

was a poor headed clearance by Damien Delaney. He will have a

difficult week ahead, he goes into it not knowing whether he will be

able to find players to replace those he put out on the pitch, or

whether he will be replaced. A good save, nice move by West Ham. Quality

play. Downing's cross. Who would change places with him? Williams.

That is a great ball by Williams. Good stop denying Murray. Straight

into the chest of Adrian. An entertaining afternoon, particularly

if your name is Sam Allardyce will stop his team have played well,

problems for Keith Millen, clearly for Crystal Palace as a whole. For a

brief moment the outcome was threatened by Marouane Chamakh's

goal. West Ham were comfortable and good winners. You will enjoy

watching that on match of the day to night? I well, I enjoy the programme

last night, absolutely brilliant. Really pleasing to watch the years

go by, as we talked about before the game. Certainly looking forward to

the whole programme, particularly from our point of view, the

performance, the way we controlled the game, the quality of our goals.

We got everything right, what was lacking last week was the quality of

the finishing. We could have scored more than we did today. When it was

2-1, we shot ourselves in the first with the goal from the set piece.

3-1 is difficult to come back from. We have played well in the last two

games, probably for six points, that was not meant to be. To get Mauro

scoring, and Carlton Cole is a plus. I thought we played well last week

and last, again today, not the best of starts we will have to get on the

training pitch and work even harder. You don't know whether you will be

part of the club by the end of the week? I don't, you are right. I'm

enjoying it, but it is tough. I had to make sure I keep bleeding the

players, and I'm in charge at the moment, I continue doing my job, in

tomorrow, the cup game on Tuesday, the transfer window shutting on

Monday, a busy week. A terrific performance from West Ham. There was

a veiled threat at the end of last season to Sam Allardyce that he has

to get the results and also play entertaining football. Last season

there was a perception of the way West Ham played. They had the least

shots on target. Long passes they had done the most in the Premier

League. I thought today they were absolutely brilliant. Sam Allardyce

got his tactics spot on. Noble has been told to get the ball. If you

are a midfield player and you do not get the ball, you go away from the

play. He wants to drive at the back four. He was fantastic all

afternoon. Noble gets the ball and he does a simple ball. West Ham were

not lumping the ball into the box, it was measured play. Creswell

should have hit the target. Around the corner, great play from Noble,

he dictated play all afternoon. Alan Shearer will be proud of this one.

What a strike that is. He was brilliant all afternoon. This is the

goal. One touch play. Mao Rose take, they get numbers forward and they

break the pace. Downing on the right wing. What a finish from Downing. I

think Sam Allardyce deserves a lot of credit. Look at this, it was

measured and they were brilliant against a rudderless Crystal Palace.

My guess will be that he was told to bring a centre forward coach in

rather than want to bring one in. Teddy Sheringham. The pressure was

on him last season and the fans were on to him and they wanted it to be

more entertaining and they brought one in. Whatever it is, it is

working. Zarate's performance was terrific. Should he have had a red

card? Yes, it should have been a red card. It was a bad foul. He was

fortunate. He carried on unbelievably after that. You said

Crystal Palace were rudderless and they wanted to appoint a new manager

quickly. It was going to be Malky Mackay, that that clearly went the

way because of reasons out of their control. They need somebody with

Premier League experience. They need to get someone in quickly because of

the transfer window, they need to have a look and bring some players

in. Lennon has got Premier League experience. They beat Barcelona in

the Champions League. Stamford Bridge next where Chelsea

faced another of the newly promoted clubs, Leicester, following victory

at Burnley on Monday night. Garfield has scored, Burnley take

the lead! Chelsea are level. That was a beautiful, crafted goal by

Chelsea. Chelsea have laid down a marker. Chelsea have kept seven

clean sheet in their last eight home games. A tough first away game in

the Barclays Premier League for Leicester. 50 years ago this weekend

Chelsea were winning 3-0 against Wolves whilst Leicester shed six

goals at Sunderland. Perhaps that should have been the first match of

the day. Jose Mourinho has never gone three consecutive seasons

without winning a Championship. Chelsea looked the part at Burnley

on Monday. He keeps the same team that started at Turf Moor. It is

still the Bald Court one, not Petr Cech in goal. -- Thibault Courtois.

Just a lack of understanding. Chelsea look a little bit short on

ideas at the moment. Diego Costa lost it. That was the

first real shot in anger. It came from Leicester City. It was well

saved. It was not that straightforward a stop. They are

finding spaces in behind Chelsea's full-backs, left and right,

Leicester. Morgan lost Diego Costa for a moment

and then recovered. Schurrle in the box. That was a

commander 's effort. Much better from Chelsea. It hit the

woodwork and got a save out of Schmeichel.

That was a good tackle. There is something about this Leicester team,

no question about that. They are all appealing for a

handball and Lee Mason is not interested. If an bitch and a good

save by Schmeichel. They are all asking Lee Mason whether there was a

handball. And David Nugent was through and

Thibault Courtois saved. What a chance for a Leicester City to take

the lead. On his home debut he makes the same. A really good save by the

Chelsea keeper. -- the save. Schmeichel was equal to it. The

keeper would not go down. That is what Cesc Fabregas was hoping for.

Schmeichel would not commit and was not beaten. This is a difference

Chelsea second half. Branislav Ivanovic. And it is Diego Costa. The

right man in the right place in the nick of time. Just past the hour

mark. Leicester are finally undone. Diego Costa makes it two in less

than two games for Chelsea. Branislav Ivanovic kept his feet

superbly. Diego Costa profited. Nothing Schmeichel on the line could

do. He kept his composure and he kept his feet. A goal had been

coming. Right through Schmeichel. Eden

Hazard makes it two and surely makes the game safe. Eden Hazard gets

Roman Abramovich and Stamford Bridge out of their seats. It was deflected

off Morgan and that is what beats Schmeichel. Off the toe of Wes

Morgan. And here comes Didier Drogba. And it is to a rapturous

ovation. How happy is he that he brought him back? Diego Costa makes

way and Stamford Bridge rises as one. From those in the cheapest

seats to those in the most expensive for Didier Drogba, back at Chelsea.

Mark Albrighton for Leicester. Thibault Courtois has made a couple

of decent saves in the Chelsea goal. That was a good try. A swerving shot

which Kasper Schmeichel did well to tip over. We are disappointed. Key

moments did not quite go our way today. I thought we played

exceptionally well in the first half. Unfortunately, it is about

taking your chances when you get them and we were unable to do that.

But there are more positives today than negatives. It is Arsenal next.

It is a vicious star, Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal. That is what you

want. The reason you play in the Premier League is to play against

all the good Premier League teams. We are enjoying being here and we

want to stay here. If we play like we did in the first-half, we have

got a good chance of doing that. We did not play very well in first half

and we suffered counterattacks against us. We did not feel

comfortable at all. We needed a wake-up call from the coach as well

at half-time and we reacted very well. We started pressing higher and

higher and getting more second balls in the second half and getting

chances and getting into their box. We felt we really played much better

in the second half. I spoke to the Chelsea manager Jose-Maria near. I

imagine you had strong words at half-time? I would not say strong,

objective. We were not playing well enough to win the game. In the

second half, from minute one, completely different. They had a big

chance, face to face with the goalkeeper. That was the only thing.

In the second half they could not stop us. You have mentioned

Courtois, he made some key saves? Chelsea are used to it over the last

ten years, Petr did the same for us. The goalkeeper for a big team is

the kind of player who does not touch the ball a lot, but has to

keep his concentration and be there in the big moments. Was it a tough

decision going with Courtois over Cech? I love my players, I respect

them a lot, I tried to be super professional. I tried to think about

my club before my players. If I can be great to the players and the

club, the perfect situation, but if I had to choose between the club and

the players, I have to choose the club. The point is not the quality,

Petr is an amazing goalkeeper, what made me have the decision was the

fact the kid is 22, he only has a couple of years in his contract, if

he does not play, he will leave Chelsea, in one year's time he will

be a free agent. I made a decision for the team, he is answering in a

great way. At the other end, Diego Costa has started well, a gold in

both games. He is a goal-scorer, both his goals asked Riker's goals,

the goals you score a lot. He sees it, going between the legs of the

opponent and the goalkeeper. This is what we need, a striker to score

goals, and he's doing that. Interesting stuff. Particularly on

Courtois, the reason why he has gone with him, he was a vital component.

I thought he played well, I think it is the right decision, he won the

league in Spain last year, playing in the Champions League final, he is

ready to start otherwise they lose him. His performance today, full of

confidence, very good, when he was called upon, he made himself really

big. Saving the game for them. This was his first save against Burnley.

Full of confidence, getting off to a good start. A basic one, awkward.

Bouncing in front of him. This time, it is better, taking a

deflection off Cahill. Standing tall. Getting it away with his legs.

He has a presence, defenders love it when the goalkeeper takes the

pressure off them. His distribution is good. Great forro, putting

Chelsea on the attack. This is the most important save, at 0-0. If this

goes in a different story. The way he gets out, makes and sells big,

Nugent should score. I don't know what he's doing looking at the

linesman, should get his head down, hit it and score. A very good save.

You look at his presence, taking the pressure off the defenders, does it

again late in the game. His performance was brilliant. Watching

that chance, you knew that could prove costly. It was at 0-0, that is

the difference between the Premier League and the Championship. In the

Championship you get a couple more chances. David Nugent has to take

those. At the other end, Chelsea had someone who did. Pretty much

everybody knew what they needed last season. They have a goal-scorer,

someone perfect for the Premier League. Jose Mourinho mention right

place, right time, absolutely, that is not a fluke. He will also run in

behind. That creates space. This time Schurrle takes it off him. He

will hold it up, you have to do that as a centre forward. Players will

run off him. Goes into the box, pulling out, a decent strike,

deflected over. They will be strongly here, they have someone who

can hold it up. Fabregas will run on, Schurrle will run on. Hazard

will run on. Good ball, does not work out. His defensive side is OK.

What is impressive, he starts the move. Watch his determination to get

into the box. That is where all good strikers want to end up because they

score goals. He started the move. He gets his goal, a very good one. The

pace the ball comes at him, he does not have time to think. That is not

a fluke, that is excellent control. He takes it away from the defender,

slotting it away. He has no time to think, right into his path. After

the game Jose said he was not that impressed with him. He got his

goals, it took drop a while to settle in. Leicester played well? I

was impressed with them last week how they fought back against

Everton, today, for large parts of the game, especially the first half,

they did well. If that chance for Nugent goes in, a different game.

extraordinary incident. That is good enough to win the league, the cup,

the World Cup, even the Grand National. We have never had it as

good in England as far as football is concerned.

Swansea, fresh from beating Manchester United

on the opening day, met Burnley for the first time in

Lukas Fabianski makes his deadly. Gylfi Sigurdsson is reacquainting

himself with the Liberty Stadium after a two year spell at Spurs.

Burnley are unchanged. Things look different for them before the title

favourites exerted their class, giving them a harsh reality check.

Here is Danny Ings. Just off target, not by much. Falling to his left

hand side, not quite so Not enough to prevent the

goal-scorer. That was a half chance. That was not a bad ball either. It

did not look as if it was going to arrive at the striker's feet, but he

did. Under pressure from Williams. He gets a corner.

Plenty forward for Burnley. He should have put it on target. There

are hands on heads all over. He had a wonderful opening. He flicked it

over. Just over 20 minutes to go. Sean Dyche will feel his side ought

to be level. Now Jones right across the face of the goal.

All they have to show for their efforts is a corner. Good ball, good

goalkeeping. The first chance at Swansea have had in reality in this

second half. It was a lovely ball in by Montero. But he did exceptionally

well. Burnley have not got much time now. Driven forward by Heaton.

Barnes on the town and over the bar and in that moment the point I

Swansea's. The defeat is for Burnley. The newly promoted side

will have learnt another harsh lesson. I knew that would be a tough

game today. In the first half we controlled it, but in the second

half as we expected Burnley were going to throw everything at us and

we have to give them great credit with that attitude. When you get

promoted some of the players wonder I write for this division? In the

first half we showed them too much respect. In the second half we

reminded them of the freedom they have got to play with. Everyone

expect it not to happen for us. I said, go out and express yourselves,

and in the second half I thought they did. I thought the quality of

the players, the movement and the energy was there in the second half.

But we will own quickly. It is great to have six points after two games,

but it is down to the players and the attitude they have got. I said

you will need each other all season and in experiences like we had in

the second half. To limit them to one shot on target shows we had a

great defence. They caused Burnley all sorts of problems in the first

half. Especially when you have got pace outside. All afternoon they

were a real threat in wide areas. Shelby's range of passing in

midfield. On this occasion they combined the winners and they set up

a great chance. They were great at Old Trafford last week and again

there is a range of passing and they stay wide. They offer real pace and

a real threat. Sigurdsson from midfield as well. I think six points

from six and Gary Monk is doing exceptionally well. The full-back

had a very bad afternoon to be fair. But they build up from the back as

well. When you know you have got pace on either side, you can gamble

first game in charge? Difficult. It was very difficult and we did not

create a lot. I think both teams had their spells during the game when

they controlled things. We obviously came here knowing they were a good

side and it is important our organisation is good and we got

possession. I felt it was. When we had possession we passed it quite

nicely but without creating a lot. We maybe had the best chances. The

tempo could have been better. Although they sat very deep they

came here for the point and nothing else in my opinion. It was their

strategy. But I think we should have created a little bit more. It is

Irvine had seen him play, but he looked lively enough when he came on
