It's the final day of the final round of group games in Brazil

and some familiar faces stand on the brink of World Cup elimination.

But one man's World Cup ended before a ball was even kicked today.

We were the weakest group in the group of death. We played really

well over three games. We got ourselves in a good position to

advance. We did the business. We're proud of ourselves. The good thing

is we feel like we have a bit left in the tank so we can A draw

improve. Would have been OK, but that's not the German way, another

win. Exactly. We wanted to make sure that we are ready for the last 16

and I think we have shown that in a good way that we are ready for the

next knockout match. The knockout stages, anybody can go through, if

you bring it on that day. We'll do everything we can and make sure that

we put in the work that we need to and hopefully play to the best of

our ability. If we do, that we can get a result.

A 4-0 defeat in the opening game against Germany left Portugal too

much ground to make up in terms of their goal difference.

I've been surprised because they've not just defended well, they've

Messi, they don't need lots of chances. It has not been his World

Cup. He has been carrying them on his own. It has been a poor

performance. He is going home. We have seen 136 goals in the group

stages, the most ever. It is time to pick your favourite. It will not be

Algeria still have something about them when they go forward.

should have made that two. That could prove to be a big miss

for Russia. Algeria desperate to take something

from this game. If they do, they would almost certainly go through.

Ignashevich. This is a good spell in the game for

the Algerians. One goal for them would change everything.

Djabou trying to win it back. bundled over. He'll know he's been

in a game. Djabou has been very effective for Algeria, threatening

to get away from Kozlov here. Someone 's flashing a laser at

Akinfeev. He's trying to draw the referee's attention to it. That

really is out of order. Akinfeev beaten in the air and a massively

controversial goal because Slimani has scored for Algeria, with the

Russian goalkeeper having a laser shined in his face, as the free kick

was taken. That goal could knock Russia out. Huge celebrations from

the Algerians. You can understand that. Slimani with the goal. The

Russians, I'm sure, will complain. You can clearly see the laser on

Akinfeev. Whether it really impeded him when the ball came in, I don't

know. But it may have unnerved him. Algeria are level.

Not great goal keeping. But you have to say that the Algerian right back

did well for his keeper there shielding it so Kokorin couldn't get

to it. Look at this shot just for a moment,

it looked like it might creep under his right arm. Time against Russia

here. Last few seconds. Every second precious. Russia have the ball back.

And that's it. Algeria have done it. Algeria go through. And they feel

that they've righted a wrong after 32 years, a West Germany, Austrian

carve up in 1982 knocked them out. Algeria, for the first time, are out

of a group stage in the World Cup Finals and Algeria will play Germany

in the last 16. But the manner of their qualification highly

controversial, as Akinfeev, the Russian goalkeeper, had a laser pen

shined in his face as Brahimi took the free kick from which the goal

was scored. But the goal stands and the fact remains, Russia are out and

Algeria are through. Have you found it a disappointing

group in general, this group? Yeah. I can't lie. There's been a lack of

quality. I think Belgium were the stand-out team. The rest of them,

even today, any of them could have gone through. It was probably one of

the poorest groups. Just glad it's over really. I'm looking forward to

seeing Belgium play their full strength team again. That wasn't

be in the quarter finals, but a couple of teams will surprise us. I

sensationalment I was there for the Spain-Chile game and I didn't think

that could be beaten for atmosphere, but with two South American sides

going for it, I will be looking forward to We will that. See four
