Welcome to Match Of The Day two Extra on the final day of what has

been an extraordinary season. We are on BBC Radio jersey, five live, and

the BBC sport website. -- BBC Radio Two. Will it be Manchester City or

will Liverpool clinched their first title since 1990? We will be live at

the Etihad Stadium and Anfield to capture the mood. We will speak

about relegation. It looks like we will be saying goodbye to Norwich.

We will look ahead to the England World Cup squad announcement

tomorrow. In the studio... We have Martin Key own, Kevin Kilbane and

next 45 minutes. All sorts of stuff on the back pages. A mixture of the

title race and the Roy Hodgson's England squad. Sam Wallace, there

should be a lot of stuff on Manchester City. The back of the

Daily Mail quotes Greg Dyke, he says, if Manchester City win the

title it would be depressing because they've only got two regular England

players. I can see his point. Manchester City fans will not want

to hear it but you would like a team with a greater English

representation. In their defence, they are building an enormous

training ground across the road from their stadium, the owners have only

been there six years and it takes a generation to bring players through.

I think Greg Dyke has said some pretty provocative things that are

on the law end of the scale. Not putting words into the mouths of

Manchester City fans but they will not care less, will they? That is

it. It is about getting the title won. They are building it up, they

are getting the best talent from around the world, but it is about

getting the talent in from this country as well, getting them

developed in and around that campus. Martin, let me throw another thing

at you from the papers, the front page of The Times. A quote from Jose

Mourinho. Edin Dzeko should be Player of the Year. He says they

should come from the champions. I do agree that it would be nice but I

would have gone for Yaya Toure. I think it was a tongue-in-cheek

comment. Luis Suarez has been magnificent. He has fluffed his

lines recently. I think he is talking about a striker that does

the job and gets on professionally. Luis Suarez has been brilliant at

times. You have a theory, don't you? He might fancy signing him. He might

be able to have a nibble at Edin Dzeko. If his first target does not

work out, he fits the bill. We will go to the Etihad Stadium shortly.

Let us get a view from the Manchester City camp. Gary Lineker

has been speaking to Vincent Kompany.

I imagine you don't expect something as dramatic this time. Anything is

possible in football. Last time, it made me age, that is how stressful

it was. It still remains my best memory in football so far. If that

is what it has to be then we will be prepared for it. We will certainly

not be giving anything up. From the point of view of the players, how

important is that experience of having been there and done it? Even

just on the final day of the season. Without doubt, when I was

able to win it in 1998, more than ever was I reliant on the likes of

Tony Adams around me to help me get over the line. In later years, there

was a way to behave, you trusted people about you, you made sure you

were professional, did not let things slip away. This is a second

chance for Manchester City. There is no way they will let this be thrown

away. When you talk about a way to behave, are you talking about being

cam? Without doubt, it is a mindset. -- being serene. You trust people

around you, you do your job, less is more, you trust everybody to do

their jobs, and it almost takes care of itself. Some people will score of

the important goals. It is when you go charging around, it becomes hard

work, the crowd are involved, there is too much emotion, you need to be

professional to finish it off and stop the experience of winning it

against QPR will help them today. We spoke on Wednesday, watching

Manchester City against Aston Villa, even though there were nervous

around the stadium, the players kept doing what they were doing. Aston

Villa helped because they kept dropping deeper, but they continued

to probe, press, they moved the ball likely, it was not just side to

side. -- quickly. David Silva was getting into the whole. They

continued to get wide. Pablo Zabaleta kept doing the things he

was doing. If you continue to do that, they will score. I'm convinced

that Manchester City will score today, so ultimately I think it will

be enough because I cannot see them conceding two goals. If they fail,

it is the biggest joke in modern football history, incompatible even

when you compare them to Liverpool in 1989. If they throw it away we

will be talking about it for years. The biggest joke in football

history. You will get some reaction to that. -- choke. Is there a sense

of serenity? to that. -- choke. Is there a sense

people here at the moment. It is mixed with anxiety. I don't think

they have mixed with anxiety. I don't think

the stories in the morning paper about the money issue, the fact that

the stories in the morning paper the title. That is if they

for that match, and I wonder whether the crowd nerves will play a part.

In the first half on Wednesday against Aston Villa, this place got

very anxious. It transmitted itself to the players, and Manuel

Pellegrini calmed them down. They heard that message and they

demolished Aston Villa in the second half. There will be nervous,

especially if news comes through that Aston Villa -- and Liverpool

are leading. The players, however good they are, nerves can do strange

things. We could have a twist yet. Do you get a sense when talking to

people at the club that in many ways, although they are obviously

concerning themselves with winning the title, they do have one eye on

what might happen tomorrow and the whole financial fear plaything? I

think so. -- financial fair play thing. This is big news, they win

the title, in the Champions League, but can they compete going forward?

I think there is a little bit of that. The focus today is on winning

the title, they cannot let anything distract them. I think they are

finding the headlines are little bit distracting.

Do you think Manchester City have every reason to feel they are being

got that? The basis of the story is they have been found in breach of

financial fear play. They will make a judgement on the sanctions. --

fair play. They knew the rules, and however you felt about them, it

began being about debt and ended up being about overspending. But I'm

afraid, these are the regulations, and therefore it is not the

newspapers going after them, it is simply if they do win the title, the

story that will follow will be what UEFA have decided is the punishment.

I appreciate it is not the newspapers going after them but, if

we put it another way, maybe they are not getting the credit you would

normally expect the title winners to get. Is that they are? Yes. -- Is

that fair? If they win this, Manuel Pellegrini has got two trophies in

the first season. It is not doom and gloom. They have the nucleus of a

great site. On today's game, it is not about an individual, it is about

the collective team doing the job defensively. -- great side. The team

will come together and it will all happen. It will not be one

individual who will win the game, I'll be at, someone will be the hero

at the end of it. -- except someone will be. For words to describe

Manchester City, nobody mentions planned well -- Manuel Pellegrini.

It is Gus Poyet, Brendan Rodgers, those are the ones people are

talking about. I think he has been a breath of fresh air, he has come in

and let the players be themselves, they have gone on to another level.

Under Roberto Mancini you felt he was not in love with the players, it

was confrontation. All the strikers have made huge contributions. The

spine of that team. When you see Vincent Kompany, he speaks like a

manager. It is fantastic to have a player like that. You have Yaya

Toure, Sergio Aguero, so many good players. They have tripped up along

the way, they should have been in front when you look at those squads,

whether that is financial doping, the way they have been allowed to

buy these players, and whether there will be any legal ramifications

afterwards, it will not matter to the players. They want to go out and

win the Premier league and that is the only thing they have got their

eyes on. Given the financial penalties that could happen, as

regards Champions League, the number of players, do you expect them to

strengthen? Within the boundaries that they can. They might need to

sell. You think of the limitations of a Premier league squad, only 25

players. It is not his fault they have done this, he has only comment

in the last year and he has done very well. Look at what he did with

Edin Dzeko, he was totally disenchanted with Roberto Mancini,

he has played so well in the absence of Sergio Aguero. He has obviously

man managed him very well. He had one little dip, after the Barcelona

game, where he ranted about the referee. He is not the Iceman,

impervious to pressure, but the way he has handled Jose Mourinho has

been dignified. The two big ones were Joe Hart, where he relieved

him, Joe Hart did not moan, he has come back and been outstanding. The

other was Martin Kaymer careless. His last ten or 15 games have been

different. -- Martin Demichelis. Everyone says that was a turning

point. It was. He marshalled the defence. He organised the back four.

It was an incredible performance. He has gone on from there. He grew from

that performance and he has been a leader. Two of them have been

outstanding. There was the Champions League when he got sent off, and in

that period it was not great, and you look at him and you say that

they could buy someone better, but credit to him, since then he has

done exceptionally well. His manager has stuck by him. Let me read some

of your words. Arsenal, same old, same old. Chelsea, need a striker.

Tottenham fan in Surrey, we'd like some stability. Fulham fan, he names

the managers. Moving from Manchester City to

Liverpool as we discussed the title race on the final day of the season.

Before we go there let's hear from Brendan Rodgers.

We can only concentrate on our job, to win the game. We want to finish

strongly. We know this will be a tough game. The combination of us at

home and our supporters has been fantastic for us as a team. 16

victories out of 19. It is a great return for us. For them, West Ham

have some really talented players. If you can go to Tottenham and win

3-0 you can certainly go to Manchester City and do that.

Interesting logic from Brendan Rodgers. Shall we go to Anfield?

Steve Wilson is there. We spent a lot of time talking about the

Anfield atmosphere, what is it like today? It is a little different. It

was probably topped by the Chelsea game. Not quite the same buzz around

here. Liverpool fans, and hope. I don't think there is an enormous

Liverpool legend. He won the title eight times with the club. Phil

Neal. Any chance? You are clearly hoping Liverpool can do it, what

does your heads tell you? We have just got to do the business year. We

have done that rode a fantastic season. In October we would have

taken probably force lot but the boys have performed so excellently

that we have gotten into this position. The Istanbul night is

understand on that debate? He could have gone to Manchester United but

Brendan Rodgers has shown this year he is prepared to give young players

the chance. It is interesting that Rogers said in the week he wants to

buy a place. He does not want to buy squad players but when you look at

the money he spent in relative terms to the modern market it is not much.

In 2009 when they finished second last time it did not go well for

Benitez. We have got to build on this Liverpool. It was said to me on

Monday night that sometimes you need the pain of one season to get the

success for the following season. If you look at Manchester United losing

at Anfield before Leeds went on. Yes, if you think about the

situation standing on the pitch at the millennium Stadium we lost to

Liverpool. Out of adversity is where you show what you are really made

of. Gerard really wanted to win. The result of Palace would have heart

Brendan more than anybody else. His philosophy almost got in the way of

winning that match. -- hurt. He has been fantastic the way he has played

his part. He just needs to tweak it a little bit. If is one excellent

player, the wiki can move the ball is like a European player. He is

ready now and has developed later. We probably have not enough time to

expand on that point. The season where they scored 85 and conceded

just 16, is that possible in the modern-day game when balls seem to

be slightly more easy to come by because regulations have been

tightened up on how much defenders can kick people? Yes, rules have

changed, it is the quicker game, more fast-paced. It is developing

season upon season. You would think Liverpool have to sign a defender to

get themselves a bit better defensively. Do they need to get

better defensively by signing players or is it a coaching thing.

It might be the philosophy. More managers now want to go and attack

and win games and you have got to applaud that. -- applaud that. It is

getting the balance between the two. The same with Martinez at times. We

are not seeing less and less managers playing long ball and

managers who want to park the bus. A little bit of both. It is an

attacking philosophy now, they are going to win games rather than

containment. We have seen it this season. The likes of Southampton.

There are going to Old Trafford. It is not a containment job any more.

You feel that Man City are strong in both areas. On arriving at city

Pellegrino wanted it to be more like La Liga. Real Madrid and Barcelona

would put six and seven goals past teams on a regular basis. There are

lots of things wrong with that division. I actually think that is a

bit of the weakness in the league. I like to see teams beat big teams

with shock results. I think watching Liverpool, just how Gerard drops

back between the two centre have is, at times, it is an innovative

thing. You cannot do that against everyone. When Chelsea came Jose

Mourinho exposed that type of play. The problem with facing managers

like that is you have to have a plan B. There was one moment in the

matchwinner he'd tripped up and slept. There was that mistake. Time

wasting. Yes, but Chelsea did not concede. I Cannes they rode their

luck and Liverpool were unlucky on the day. Your for word reviews of

your season coming in. Michael says as far as Liverpool is concerned it

is not over yet. Ollie Davies, Spurs, thank God it's over. That's

not very positive, is it? Let's talk to Tim Sherwood know who has been

speaking about the uncertainty he is basing going into the summer ahead

of their game against Aston Villa. I gave a list of players to the

chairman a few months ago and to Franco Albini, the players I would

recommend we keep and the ones I recommend we leave and the ones I

recommend we bring in. I am not sure how we are getting on with that

list. How do you think they are getting on with that list? I do not

know, they have given me no indication. It doesn't look like he

will be there, will he go in the bin? It is incredible as talking

like this, here's defiant, he wants to do his job, to continue to do the

job he started to do but it is highly unlikely he will be there. I

would say he will not be there next season. Players are coming to him

telling him they know they will not be here next year. He seems to be in

the dark about it all instead of the club just coming out and telling him

to put him out of his misery. I think it might have been the stand

he took at the start, he was quite bullish, he said he wanted the job

on his terms or not at all. He wanted to be a manager, he was firm

in that. He is clearly a manager and will do well in that job at some

point but the results have gone against him, against the bigger

teams. But actually know not inform him of what is happening and for him

to have to face the world's media without knowing is quite ridiculous.

Four from his point of view, if he has an 18 month corn that --

contract. I think he would have accepted that but all along he was

told we will give you the summer transfer window and next season.

They have changed their minds about that. Since he took over Warmley

city, Chelsea and Liverpool have taken more points than Spurs in that

period. -- only City. He is open and says what is on his mind. We moan

about managers who tiptoe around this year. What are the Spurs

hierarchy looking for? They are looking for someone to try to take

the club on from last season and it has not worked for them since Harry

Redknapp. You could argue he has taken them on from where they were.

In football people tell lies to each other. Just forefront. They will not

be upfront with the media. They are hanging him out to dry by doing what

they are doing. Managers want to get the best out of players. You did not

move from football to media hoping people would be truthful in the

media, did you? It is even worse! Nice suit, by the way! What do you

think of the Spurs hierarchy? What he needs to do is just retain his

dignity and manage this as best as he can and see it as a long-term

position that he ultimately goes into management elsewhere. He was

what, technical director? Technical coordinator. He will find it

difficult to go back to that position and should ultimately go

elsewhere. From a Southampton point of view, if their main players leave

the club, all three rumoured to be happening, what does that say about

Southampton? It is negative to start with. Rickie Lambert is another one

the wrong rumours about. Overall they have put a belief in that the

philosophy of the club is they will develop from within. How long they

can continue that for I do not know but overall is the first man leaves

the club where will they go? Will they have another manager who comes

in? He is very much hit and miss. It has been proven time and again if

you get the right man in it will work. At the day at other clubs it

does not work so consequentially does it go? Everything is about

going forward. If you look at how their fullbacks push on. It is very

clear and obvious. A lot of teams could copy it. He has put that in

place and has a clear vision of what he wants. I do not think he will be

there forever. In the meantime, from a Southampton point of view, the

need to rescue this. There are a lot of young players coming through that

football club so they need the right man in the quickly. It's depressing

for those who believe in developing talent and building a football club,

doing things the right way. I know there will be people who say they

have spent a lot of money, and done things the right way, but if they

lose this talent they have developed, it does not send out a

great message. Actually, people could talk about Chelsea and

Manchester City. If Roman Abramowitz had not taken over, they would have

lost Frank Lampard and John Terry. Look at Manchester City, they lost

Shaun Wright Phillips. Overnight, he went to Chelsea as a squad player.

When you talk about developing a great team of English players,

unless you have that money at the top, you cannot protect these

players. Look at Swansea. One good season and you will get all your

best players taken away. It is a very difficult situation Southampton

find themselves in. I have great sympathy for them. It is

justification for why you need a rich owner, it is keeping the ones

you develop. We are kind of looking back through the years to see

whether it was always like this, when Paul Ince went from West Ham to

Manchester United. I suppose the big clubs have always cherry picked the

talent. One or two can be allowed to leave, it might be a case of one per

season, because you cannot rip the heart out of that football club. You

have to support the next bunch coming through, it needs to be a

team that can compete or the rest of the team is affected. It is probably

Adam Lallana at this stage. Luke Shaw can wait for the future. I

think that is important. If they all do go it is a problem. Bryan Robson

made his debut in 1975 and he left after six years. You got six years

out of a great player before he moved on full getting quite a lot of

tweets. -- before he moved on. Mark Mitchell says Stoke City, really,

really, really good. David McDonald about Crystal Palace, Manager of the

Year. West Ham, long ball to Andy Carroll. That leads us on to Andy

Carroll and the England squad. Various newspapers starting to

predict. You have done years. Did you have Andy Carroll in it? -- you

have done one. Originally, I would have taken three strikers, but since

the injury to Andros Townsend I would bring Rickie Lambert end. --

in. I am always astonished, people always stick eight defenders in.

Would you lose one and boost up the midfield, on the basis that you

could have James Milner covering a full-back? It would be highly

unlikely that you're going to get three injuries to the back four.

Interesting talking about Jon Flanagan. I put him in mind. I put

him ahead of Kyle Walker. He has had a better season. He is more of a

natural defender. I would go with him. It is a difficult call and I

totally get it but I think he has had a more consistent season. Are

you judging your full-backs on how they defend rather than... He could

be the false full-back. That is kind of like and also glue -- auxiliary

winger. The reason I go with that is Glen Johnson is an attacking

full-back. I would pick Ashely Cole, you would be in my squad. I think

you're looking for something that is comparing ball with Ashely Cole and

I think Jon Flanagan as that. -- comparable. He has played in a top

side this season. Take nothing away from him, nobody even wanted him on

loan this year. There is absolutely no way that you take a player with

that sort of experience. If you are the England manager, looking across

at that bench, Leighton Baines is injured, you want someone with real

experience. This is a big competition and Roy Hodgson... I

would take Ashley Cole. If you look across Europe, it would be

unthinkable if a player in their prime did not go to a World Cup and

that is what we have here, one of the world's best left-backs. Still

showing that he is at that level, I would like to be able to turn to him

and bring him on. Luke Shaw is for the future, no doubt about that, but

it is a bit too soon. Certainly, Jon Flanagan, asking somebody to do

something like that, he has done well but we are putting him under

enormous pressure. The reason I included him is Kyle Walker has not

played since March, and you should be ruthless about injuries. That is

why Jack Wilshere is not there. I think Roy Hodgson will choose Jack

Wilshere and Kyle Walker. He said he has the squad in his head and has

had it in his head for a few months. He is going to games to have his

view confirmed. We have been here before with injured players and I

don't think there is the time. People talk about them being fresh.

You see them stumbling into a World Cup, half fit. I don't think Ashely

Cole will be the number one. I imagine Leighton Baines will play

all three games, possibly more. He did not go to the last one. If you

take him as first choice, why take Ashley Cole? He may have to play a

major part in it and it might be too much for Luke Shaw. I take your

point. I think he proved, defensively, he was outstanding over

in Madrid. He needs to go. The squad, by the way, will be announced

tomorrow from 2pm. You might already know it before then, the back page

of the Sun this morning, their headline is that Roy Hodgson will

fall the unlucky seven, the seven players on stand-by, tonight. --

telephone. If he phoned them tonight, by 10pm most people will

probably have guessed who the 23 R. It is a nightmare, we would much

rather nobody knew. -- 23 are. The pieces of the jigsaw will start

falling into place. If Luke Shaw is told he is on stand-by, that means

Ashley Cole is in. The big and will be resolved. -- the big answers. If

there is no easy way. Did you always get a phone call? Nothing, usually.

I think, I remember certainly around 2002, Nick McCarthy kept in regular

contact with the players to check up, -- Mick McCarthy. I think there

was an idea, you knew, and then the squad was announced. Add a member

the first one, it was painful, you were waiting with bated breath, and

Graham called the players. They were so paperthin, when the phone went,

you could hear the clatter of things, Ian Wright was in the room

next to me and he was not going. You had 30 together and then he whittled

it down, whereas Roy Hodgson is taking 23 plus the seven. We will

World Cup squad, when we are looking at the players that have been

selected, it does feel like for virtually every tournament since I

can remember, we selected on a view to the future, constantly. I go back

to 1982, but every squad, we have got one eye on what will happen in

the future. I have heard that school of thought, picking relative

unknowns to go to the World Cup, but you have somebody like Ashley Cole,

Steven Gerrard, these are experienced players that have been

there, seen that and done it. They will be desperate to go. How can you

turn around to them and say, not this time, we are going to move on

and look ahead. It is a balancing act. We will be qualifying for the

European Championships in August, and some of these players, Ashley

Cole, Steven Gerrard, they are not retiring, so I would imagine they

will carry on in the early stages but it will be difficult for them to

play in the next European Championships. Of course we know

about Michael Owen, went to the World Cup in linking 98, Rio

Ferdinand came because they could not name another. -- 1998. What we

should be looking at is what formation he will play, what style,

is he going to copy what Liverpool do? He could play them, even Adam

Lallana before he gets to Liverpool. That is exciting. This time last

year, we were very worried for England, now that Ross Barkley has

been added to that group... Do not start the hype yet. Mark Dawson says

Roberto Martinez adapted, adopted, improved. Liverpool fan says they

are proud. A Sunderland fan says miracles do happen. Because of that

miracle, some of the excitement about the relegation battle has

gone. Not that Sunderland fans will care. It has gone. It was so tight

for so long, but yes, Sunderland would probably have been amazed that

Norwich did not lose to Chelsea and expected it a bit sooner but their

results have been incredible and it will be interesting to see what

happens. They have treated their games like a cup competition, and

they have done brilliantly. They got out of the bottom three, so all

credit to them to do what they have done and some of the results have

been... The Chelsea won was the standout. Very quickly, we only have

one minute left, the title... Manchester City. Manchester City.

Manchester City. I did go for Chelsea and I think this will hurt

Jose Mourinho. He is no longer the special one. Interesting to see how

they recover, he is second best. I'm keen to see next year... Third-best.

Manager of the Season? Tony Pulis. What he has done has been a miracle.

I think Manuel Pellegrini. I would go with Tony Pulis. Would you?

Probably. I know that he took them to the cup final, Gus Poyet, William

achievement, and I am. Admiration. -- brilliant achievement that I

admire, but Tony Pumas has done brilliantly. Stephen London, he says

doom, gloom, hope and elation. -- Tony Pulis has done brilliantly.

That sums up the mood of most football fans. That is it for us.
