Coming up over the next 45
minutes... | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Was that as calm a three points
as Jose Mourinho suggests? | 0:00:58 | 0:01:05
Manchester United beat Spurs
in the big game of the weekend. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:09
West Ham got a lesson in how not
to hold out for a win, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
as Slaven Bilic's side concede
in the final minute to only draw | 0:01:12 | 0:01:15
with Crystal Palace. | 0:01:15 | 0:01:16
And we're at the day's two
Premier League games | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
as Brighton face Southampton,
and Claude Puel begins his Leicester | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
career at home to Everton. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:22
We will keep you across Birmingham
against Aston Villa, which is | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
goalless after 15 minutes. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
The newspaper headlines
are dominated by England | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
under-17's World Cup triumph. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:31
The Sunday Times labels them
"Kings of the World". | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
The Observer has Jose Mourinho
telling his critics to pipe down | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
after the win over Tottenham. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
And the Sunday Mirror
headlines "Freebie Sanchez", | 0:01:40 | 0:01:46
saying Manchester City want to sign
Alexis Sanchez for free | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
in the summer, and won't go
back Arsenal in January. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:56
We're going to start with those
events in Kolkata and England's | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
under-17s winning the World Cup. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
They beat Spain 5-2 to lift
the trophy, having been 2-0 down. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Phil Foden of Manchester City
scored two of the goals. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:09
And remember, victory over Spain
in the final followed beating | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
Brazil in the semi-finals. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
The win means England are now
world champions at both | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
under-17 and under-20 level,
European champions at under-19 | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
level, and finalists in the European
under-21 championship. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
The question now is how
many of these players will we see | 0:02:24 | 0:02:31
playing Premier League football
in the next few years. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
Shay given, given the record, they
have to win something at senior | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
level in the next six or seven
years? As an Irish man it is hard | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
for me today that it is fantastic
for England! That is why I came to | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
first! Congratulations to them, they
will be buzzing this morning, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:52
especially the context of the final,
two goals down, it is a learning | 0:02:52 | 0:02:57
curve and all this, but in the
second half they came out, scored | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
just before half-time, started the
second half flying, what a fantastic | 0:03:00 | 0:03:06
result. But, as you say, they have
won three major tournaments at under | 0:03:06 | 0:03:11
age level this summer alone and now
the next crop of fantastic young | 0:03:11 | 0:03:15
English players coming through.
Before we look at the bigger picture | 0:03:15 | 0:03:18
we can expand on that because we
were sailing off air they looked | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
like they were genuinely enjoying it
yesterday, even as they were | 0:03:21 | 0:03:26
striving to get back in the game,
there was never any panic, they just | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
kept playing their game and they
seemed very relaxed, very happy, I | 0:03:29 | 0:03:42
suppose? They looked like they had
been told to go out and express | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
themselves, and that is exactly what
they did. 2-0 down, not fazed, they | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
dominated with the goal before
half-time, they thoroughly deserved | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
to win, even at 3-2, 4-2, they kept
pushing forward, Spain looked more | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
tired, the confidence started to
show, they were expressing | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
themselves. People said to me that
the -- Steve Cooper said to me, the | 0:03:59 | 0:04:06
England under-17 manager, we don't
think about failure, as in what is | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
happening with the senior teams over
many years, we embrace the fact that | 0:04:09 | 0:04:13
we have the chance to win something,
and that has always been the | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
mentality? Absolutely, and the FA
can point to St George's Park and | 0:04:18 | 0:04:23
the circumstance and situated around
that, and developing players. You | 0:04:23 | 0:04:26
are reaping the benefits of that,
the under 20s, Triumph for them, I | 0:04:26 | 0:04:34
think there is a certain expectation
in the under-17s, that this | 0:04:34 | 0:04:40
generation is bleeding through and
can hopefully make it. It is | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
interesting, the Chelsea, Man City
dominating through the numbers of | 0:04:43 | 0:04:51
it, a number of the squad. Seven of
the starting XI yesterday were | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
Chelsea or Manchester City. If you
contrast that to Spain, it is eight | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
between Barcelona and Real Madrid,
so you are seeing similar numbers | 0:05:00 | 0:05:04
but how many can actually get
through to the seniors? That is a | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
challenge but also what is the
pathway into the seniors, the club | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
team? The point there with Chelsea
and city is plaudits to both clubs, | 0:05:12 | 0:05:17
because they have developed those
kids into what they are at the | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
moment. They have come through,
haven't they? So then they have got | 0:05:21 | 0:05:27
to go again. Comparing them to the
Spain setup, they are teams that | 0:05:27 | 0:05:33
play in the lower leagues, that
helps, playing against people at a | 0:05:33 | 0:05:38
younger age, that helps develop
them, that is something that maybe | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
as a nation we need to look at, how
to develop the kids. The next | 0:05:41 | 0:05:47
question, can they bring that to
senior level? People asked, why | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
can't the senior England team play
like the under age teens, but it is | 0:05:51 | 0:05:56
the freedom, the confidence, yes,
they were 2-0 down, but they say, | 0:05:56 | 0:06:01
keep playing, keep attacking. If
England were 2-0 down in a major | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
tournament, the senior team, it
would be like, just try to keep it | 0:06:05 | 0:06:10
at two, lad! It is quite refreshing
that the younger lads say, we are | 0:06:10 | 0:06:15
going to get back into this, and the
next question is whether they can | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
bring this into international
football and club football as well. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
Phil Foden is probably the wrong
example because Pep Guardiola has | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
used him in pre-season, we will hear
from him in a moment, said that is | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
maybe the wrong example but if you
were at another club and one of | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
those kids had done what they did in
the under-17s yesterday, how much, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:38
as a senior pro, would you be in the
year of your club manager saying, at | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
least get him involved in training?
It depends if he is playing in your | 0:06:42 | 0:06:47
position! You would always try and
help them, you can see with Phil | 0:06:47 | 0:06:54
Foden that they respect and rate him
highly. I'm sure all the players | 0:06:54 | 0:07:00
there. But will he get a regular
start at Man City with the players | 0:07:00 | 0:07:04
and team they have? I think he
trains with them pretty much every | 0:07:04 | 0:07:10
day, so that is obviously the first
step, then it goes too, are you | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
performing everyday? It is just
progression because they are still | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
young kids, they will still be
inconsistency of the natural | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
progression is, can they perform,
are they playing well in training | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
every day? Let's hear from Pep
Guardiola, this is what he said | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
after Man City's win yesterday on
Phil Foden. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:34
He's an English player, he loves
Manchester City. We will try to do | 0:07:34 | 0:07:40
everything to help them.
Unfortunately he played in a | 0:07:40 | 0:07:48
competition where the competition is
not... He deserves to play to grow | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
but of course he is our player, you
will be a player for the next years, | 0:07:52 | 0:07:59
I'm sure of that, so I'm happy for
England, of course, for him, it is | 0:07:59 | 0:08:03
important for English football,
especially the young players like | 0:08:03 | 0:08:09
Phil, 17, 19, 21, they can achieve
finals, semifinals, because that guy | 0:08:09 | 0:08:14
will grow. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
It is interesting he talks about the
different levels of competitiveness. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
We had this discussion on the sofa
last week in relation to Harry | 0:08:21 | 0:08:27
Winks, Pochettino kept Harry Winks
at birth because he felt he would | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
benefit more from his coaching and
being with the first-team there and | 0:08:29 | 0:08:34
not getting bad habits from maybe
going out on loan and being coached | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
differently. It is a difficult
decision for managers to make? It is | 0:08:37 | 0:08:43
a fine balancing act and I think
there is a tendency to be critical | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
of clubs like Man City and Chelsea
which is totally missing the point, | 0:08:45 | 0:08:50
because the tendency is to criticise
them because they are not making the | 0:08:50 | 0:08:54
first team. Actually, look at it in
a positive way that they are | 0:08:54 | 0:09:00
producing these kids and producing
brilliantly technical talented kids, | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
and then it is maybe the failings, I
guess, not so much of the first-team | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
but the whole system at moment,
Premier League team for me is a | 0:09:07 | 0:09:12
waste of time... The under 23 the?
Complete waste of time. I think we | 0:09:12 | 0:09:23
miss the old reserve team setup when
basically... When old pros played... | 0:09:23 | 0:09:31
If you did not play on a Saturday
you played a reserve game in the | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
week. No disrespect to the under 23
's lead, you have played against the | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
same players for the previous three
or four years, under 19 is, U21, you | 0:09:39 | 0:09:47
play against the same players and I
think the progression then is being | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
in the League Cup, I'm not sure of
the name of it... League Cup will | 0:09:49 | 0:09:56
do! It is a competition that it
means more to the lads. I don't | 0:09:56 | 0:10:06
know, it is hard to say what to do,
Guardiola made the point that it is | 0:10:06 | 0:10:10
not being carried away, it is only
the under-17s, but it is refreshing, | 0:10:10 | 0:10:18
the Manchester Scouts are worldwide,
Brandywell, but this guy is a local | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
guy. He is a true blue. It would be
great if he could be a regular in | 0:10:21 | 0:10:28
the first-team, if they could not
send him out on road and bring him | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
into the first-team and blossom in
the first team in the Premier | 0:10:31 | 0:10:33
League, that would be fantastic.
Clare says, under-17 players play | 0:10:33 | 0:10:38
Premier League in a few years,
realistically probably five. Things | 0:10:38 | 0:10:43
have to change. Interestingly the
England under-17s ten years ago | 0:10:43 | 0:10:49
reached the quarterfinals of the
World Cup, four of that squad are | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
playing Premier League football,
Danny Welbeck, Danny Rose, Victor | 0:10:53 | 0:10:57
Moses and Dan Gosling.
Marcus says the under-17s should | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
broaden their horizons, be willing
to play in the other big leagues. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
The Premier League is not the be all
and end all and German clubs are | 0:11:03 | 0:11:07
certainly skipping around, we have
already seen Sancho go. Absolutely, | 0:11:07 | 0:11:12
he is a brilliant talent and
obviously just felt that moving to | 0:11:12 | 0:11:15
Dortmund was a better option than
staying at City. He is getting game | 0:11:15 | 0:11:24
time now. No disrespect, I don't
think he would have made his debut | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26
at City this year, where he has
obviously made his debut for | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
Dortmund. Talking about the old
reserve league, be honest here, at | 0:11:30 | 0:11:34
the end of your career, if you had
not played on Saturday, would you | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
have happily turned out on a
Tuesday... Good question! You are | 0:11:37 | 0:11:44
next! As a senior pro? Yes, because
it would have been expense, I spoke | 0:11:44 | 0:11:52
to Man City about doing that with
them now because you learn more, if | 0:11:52 | 0:11:57
we are both 17-year-olds, I make a
mistake, you don't know what I | 0:11:57 | 0:12:03
should have done. Playing with those
players and against those players, I | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
can learn and help teach them, that
is the kind of thing, when I was a | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
young player, playing against
players, disappointed not to be | 0:12:11 | 0:12:15
playing obviously, but it was
helping me out. Do you think you | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
were in a minority, that you would
be in a minority? Possibly. I can't | 0:12:18 | 0:12:24
imagine every player looking forward
to a reserve game. And I understand | 0:12:24 | 0:12:28
that, but that is the way it goes.
Your love for the game is | 0:12:28 | 0:12:34
everything, it is a game of
football. Would you? When you were | 0:12:34 | 0:12:40
at Stoke, would you have gone and
played in a reserve team game to | 0:12:40 | 0:12:44
help two 18-year-olds centre halves?
I have done in the past, to help | 0:12:44 | 0:12:50
younger players, but it is different
for gold keepers because players | 0:12:50 | 0:12:57
need to keep their match fitness,
but we just stand there with our | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
hands in the air! It is difficult to
coach and work on that in training, | 0:13:00 | 0:13:06
but, I don't know, coming back to
what John says, I think the setup of | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
the under 23 thing doesn't seem to
work. I don't know why they had to | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
revolutionise it or change it, it
was fine beforehand. The bigger | 0:13:14 | 0:13:19
picture is the Premier League and
the FA have a certain amount of | 0:13:19 | 0:13:23
English players within the 25 man
squad, I don't know how strong it | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
can be to bring that into the
Premier League because there are so | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
many foreign players coming in and
people say it is a foreign league, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:41
the English Premier League.
Tottenham do send players out on | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
loan simply to get football, which
is supposed to be the replication of | 0:13:43 | 0:13:45
the old reserve league. If you drop
down the championship, League 1, | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
that is what they are trying to do.
It is difficult with Harry Winks, he | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
is an outstanding talent who is a
more technical player, he would | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
probably get kicked all over the
place in the championship. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
Pochettino is brilliant for bringing
kids through, obviously feels that | 0:13:57 | 0:14:01
Harry Winks' needs are different. We
will go to Saint Andrews shortly to | 0:14:01 | 0:14:07
bring an update on the Birmingham
derby, goalless at the moment. Text | 0:14:07 | 0:14:15
us or use the hashtag if you wish to
get in touch. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:19
So now to the big Premier League
stories, and we'll | 0:14:19 | 0:14:21
start at Old Trafford. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:23
It ended with Jose
Mourinho shushing us. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:25
He said it was to show
everyone should be calm. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
But what might have been another
inquest into more points dropped | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
ended with a fifth straight home
league win without conceding a goal, | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
against a Harry Kane-less Tottenham. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:37
We can hear from both managers. Both
teams tried to win but I think both | 0:14:37 | 0:14:44
teams feared the opponent because it
could hurt at any moment. So I think | 0:14:44 | 0:14:53
a game with a motion, with
everything, probably one goal in the | 0:14:53 | 0:14:58
first half would make even a better
game. The team is competing in a | 0:14:58 | 0:15:04
very good way. Of course Harry Kane
is one of the best strikers in the | 0:15:04 | 0:15:12
world, that we cannot hide, but I
think the team is ready to fight, | 0:15:12 | 0:15:17
last season we had Harry Kane, the
team can beat very good, but of | 0:15:17 | 0:15:25
course you are going to miss your
best striker. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:38
Jose Marini, who we heard from
first. He said it is the 90 minutes | 0:15:38 | 0:15:44
on the pitch. All the noise around
football doesn't matter. Some people | 0:15:44 | 0:15:50
speak too much, he said. Calm down,
relax, don't speak too much, don't | 0:15:50 | 0:15:57
be so nervous, don't be so excited.
Just stay calm. People having a go, | 0:15:57 | 0:16:03
especially with the Liverpool game a
couple of weeks ago. Manchester | 0:16:03 | 0:16:08
United, one of the biggest clubs in
the world. One of the favourites for | 0:16:08 | 0:16:12
the title, you go to Anfield and you
could argue Liverpool's week as | 0:16:12 | 0:16:18
point is their defence. Why not go
and have a go and try and score more | 0:16:18 | 0:16:22
goals. We look at the trophies he
has one, what he's done in his | 0:16:22 | 0:16:29
career, he is an experienced
manager. The balance of being a | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
Manchester United manager and being
a manager somewhere else is a tricky | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
one. Did you say the pens being
sharpened in anticipation of a | 0:16:36 | 0:16:44
goalless straw with ten minutes to
go, John Cross? Yes, I thought it | 0:16:44 | 0:16:50
was a disappointment, we had built
it up as the game of the weekend. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:58
What Jose Mourinho is referring to
is having his ego pricked a bit | 0:16:58 | 0:17:05
because of what praise Porcher Tino
is getting at the moment. He hasn't | 0:17:05 | 0:17:17
said this, but, would it be fair to
say there would be an inconsistency | 0:17:17 | 0:17:25
with Manchester United goalless at
Liverpool and the Manchester United | 0:17:25 | 0:17:30
getting the criticism over that game
and then goalless at Spurs and | 0:17:30 | 0:17:37
getting the criticism for that as
well? The inconsistency is, you are | 0:17:37 | 0:17:43
Manchester United. Manchester
United, the expectation has been to | 0:17:43 | 0:17:46
go away to places, not only just to
win but do it with style. Yesterday | 0:17:46 | 0:17:53
was... They are not. The expectation
doesn't change. I am with Jose | 0:17:53 | 0:18:04
Mourinho on this little bit, they
got him because they to win. Pep | 0:18:04 | 0:18:12
Guardiola and Barcelona, you want to
get back to winning ways and that is | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
more important to Manchester United
than playing attractive football. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:20
Let's get back to winning ways and
when we are winning regular, then | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
you can say you want to win with a
bit of style. That is what he's | 0:18:24 | 0:18:28
doing at the moment. Last year they
won three cup competitions. I am not | 0:18:28 | 0:18:36
trying to get you to alienate your
fans, but as a defender, could you | 0:18:36 | 0:18:42
have seen yourself improving under
him, would you like to have played | 0:18:42 | 0:18:47
under him? He has managed the top
teams in the world. If you're | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
working with Jose Mourinho... Do his
defenders improve under him? I think | 0:18:50 | 0:18:58
his defensive record is second to
none but they don't play the same | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
way, they don't aim to score three
or four goals every game. Like the | 0:19:02 | 0:19:07
comparison is the Manchester City
and Manchester United is hard at the | 0:19:07 | 0:19:10
moment for Jose Mourinho Yobe to win
that way of playing, they are not | 0:19:10 | 0:19:14
going to do that, they don't try and
played the same kind of football. | 0:19:14 | 0:19:21
Are you surprised Spurs didn't play
Llorente yesterday? Yes. Obviously | 0:19:21 | 0:19:31
Kane wasn't available. My argument,
why didn't he start with Llorente | 0:19:31 | 0:19:42
yesterday? If he is a like-for-like
replacement, I understand Old | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
Trafford is a difficult place to go,
but why when you go there, don't you | 0:19:46 | 0:19:52
play with Llorente. He has played
for the biggest teams in Europe so | 0:19:52 | 0:19:57
he's used to that occasion, he is a
Spanish international, no reason for | 0:19:57 | 0:20:02
him not to play. Do you think Gareth
Southgate will be watching? Ashley | 0:20:02 | 0:20:14
Young, his level of performance in
recent times, he has been rewarded | 0:20:14 | 0:20:19
with the captain's armband on
occasion. He has been outstanding. | 0:20:19 | 0:20:24
He is combative. He went for a
yesterday, had a real tear up with | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
Dele Alli. Knees so consistent and
has been around the England setup | 0:20:28 | 0:20:33
and has been an England regular. If
he doesn't get the call on Thursday, | 0:20:33 | 0:20:38
he must be questioning is it Gareth
Southgate who has something against | 0:20:38 | 0:20:44
me. He does deserve the England
recall. He does deserve it but I | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
don't think he is going to get it.
James Milner, playing outstandingly | 0:20:47 | 0:20:54
for Liverpool at left-back and never
got look that. And also Delph. If | 0:20:54 | 0:21:07
you are playing for the big clubs,
you should be in the England squad. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:13
The first Premier League football
of the day is on the south coast. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
Brighton are at home to Southampton,
and Steve Wilson is at the Amex | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
for tonight's Match Of The Day 2. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:21
Good afternoon. We are here for
Brighton & Hove Albion against | 0:21:21 | 0:21:24
Southampton. Steve Sidwell is
injured at the moment, but you must | 0:21:24 | 0:21:31
be pleased with the way this season
has started, because teams sometimes | 0:21:31 | 0:21:37
need to adjust to the Premier League
but Brighton have them that quickly? | 0:21:37 | 0:21:42
100%. The majority of the squad, it
is a group of players who | 0:21:42 | 0:21:49
individually have not performed in
the Premier League, so it is all new | 0:21:49 | 0:21:52
to them and we have hit the ground
running. We have shown in our games | 0:21:52 | 0:21:58
so far we have been involved and we
have been involved in the match | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
right to the death, near enough so
that is a positive sign. We have | 0:22:02 | 0:22:07
slowly got there and picked up
points away from home, which is key. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:11
Home form will be the one where
we'll be looking to pick up most of | 0:22:11 | 0:22:15
points, obviously. Premier League
Knauss, you have bundles of that | 0:22:15 | 0:22:20
over the course of your career, but
you were a bright player as a | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
teenager on loan and you are coming
back to a club that is | 0:22:24 | 0:22:32
unrecognisable? Yes, chalk and
cheese from when I was here as a | 0:22:32 | 0:22:39
19-year-old. Now this fantastic
facility, the training ground is | 0:22:39 | 0:22:44
worthy of Premiership status. It is
geared up for Premier League | 0:22:44 | 0:22:48
football, the infrastructure is
there, now it is maintaining it and | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
that will be the hard part, but we
are giving it a good go at the | 0:22:52 | 0:22:57
moment. The three teams that a up
bar eighth, 11 and 12 in the table. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:01
Sometimes by the time a newly
promoted team get themselves sorted | 0:23:01 | 0:23:05
out in the Premier League, the gap
is too big to make up and they never | 0:23:05 | 0:23:10
recover. But all three teams who
came up have started well. Do you | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
think the gap is not as big as
people suggest or is it good | 0:23:14 | 0:23:18
management and spending power? It is
continued from last season, a | 0:23:18 | 0:23:24
winning mentality. It is a big step
up to the Premier League but the | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
winning mentality is that to play
the football we were playing last | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
year in the championship. You look
at this year, the Premier League, | 0:23:31 | 0:23:35
there is a lot of teams not playing
to their standards and be have shown | 0:23:35 | 0:23:40
that this year and hence, look at
the table and wider teams who have | 0:23:40 | 0:23:45
come up are doing so well and where
they stand. You're back injury, when | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
can we see you in action? It is hard
to put a time frame, it is nerve | 0:23:49 | 0:23:57
damage so you have to take it one
step at a time. It is harder for me | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
because I want to rush, but it is
building blocks and slowly, surely | 0:24:01 | 0:24:07
does it. Brighton versus
Southampton, watch the highlights on | 0:24:07 | 0:24:10
Match Of The Day 2 this evening. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
Thank you to Steve and Steve. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:15
So let's get the team news for this
game, from Alistair Bruce-Ball. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:20
All positive for Brighton at the
moment. Their manager has named an | 0:24:20 | 0:24:27
unchanged team after the 3-0 win at
West Ham. So the record signing | 0:24:27 | 0:24:32
starts again on the left. Glenn
Murray through the middle. A few | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
changes for Southampton. Sofyan
Amrabat fell, the wonder goal | 0:24:35 | 0:24:41
against West Brom gets his second
Premier League start of the season. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:46
So running at over to your manager,
thumping your chest and shouting me, | 0:24:46 | 0:24:52
pick me, it works. It isn't all
Dutch centre-back pairing. A big | 0:24:52 | 0:25:00
loss for Southampton is Mario
Lemina, out injured. James | 0:25:00 | 0:25:04
Ward-Prowse replaces him in the
midfield. Thank you. Plenty of | 0:25:04 | 0:25:10
updates on five live sport. Fraser
Forster has had an uncomfortable | 0:25:10 | 0:25:14
start, has been getting some
criticism. How difficult is it when | 0:25:14 | 0:25:20
you are in an isolated position as a
goalkeeper, Shay Given? It is a | 0:25:20 | 0:25:26
confidence thing. He had a difficult
start, you look and think could he | 0:25:26 | 0:25:32
have done better? It is the position
where nobody can help you out but | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
yourself. I know him very well from
my Newcastle days and he works as | 0:25:36 | 0:25:41
hard as any professional footballer
I have come across. At this stage in | 0:25:41 | 0:25:48
his career, it is all about what is
going on between his ears. If he | 0:25:48 | 0:25:53
clears his mind, stays in the
present and gets mentally tough, he | 0:25:53 | 0:25:57
will be fine. Is the last thing he
needs is to be pulled out of the | 0:25:57 | 0:26:03
firing line? I think so, he is in
the England setup and an experienced | 0:26:03 | 0:26:08
goalkeeper. He needs his manager to
support him. He's playing him every | 0:26:08 | 0:26:13
week and he will get through that.
Just one game for a fantastic | 0:26:13 | 0:26:18
performance and then he builds on
that and his confidence is back | 0:26:18 | 0:26:20
again. Mario Mola mean is a big
loss? Massa. He looks like he's | 0:26:20 | 0:26:29
played in the Premier League for
years. The Birmingham derby is | 0:26:29 | 0:26:35
underway. Robin is at St Andrews.
Five minutes ago and goalless. We | 0:26:35 | 0:26:43
have had Che Adams and Robert
Snodgrass booked for a set too early | 0:26:43 | 0:26:47
on. Birmingham could be ahead, Sam
Johnstone, the Villa goalkeeper | 0:26:47 | 0:26:53
nearly embarrassed firing a goal at
a Birmingham player which then went | 0:26:53 | 0:26:58
just wide of the post. Let's move on
to the game at Selhurst Park | 0:26:58 | 0:27:02
yesterday. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:12
I cannot believe we have done that.
We have come in quick after the | 0:27:19 | 0:27:27
game. Probably shouldn't have come
in quick after the game. We fought | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
all the way to the end like that and
then been so unprofessional at the | 0:27:30 | 0:27:33
end. He last speech as now, is it
speechless in the dressing room? A | 0:27:33 | 0:27:39
little bit. No body does things on
purpose in this team, but two points | 0:27:39 | 0:27:46
dropped, simple as that. He is
always a good post match interview, | 0:27:46 | 0:27:52
Joe Hart. He wears his heart on his
sleeve, no pun intended. He is | 0:27:52 | 0:28:01
always honest, unprofessional, big
words. What is he doing in the | 0:28:01 | 0:28:07
corner, he romps to the corner flag.
You should ask why so many West Ham | 0:28:07 | 0:28:12
players are in the opposing penalty
box in the 97th minute. Why Antonio | 0:28:12 | 0:28:19
has to put in a cross to launch
another attack when he can just play | 0:28:19 | 0:28:27
it out. If he had played it out,
because it was so late in the game, | 0:28:27 | 0:28:32
the revelry would have probably
blown his whistle. Joe Hart showed | 0:28:32 | 0:28:39
what a top goalkeeper he is. He
clearly has had dips, but he made | 0:28:39 | 0:28:44
about five or six world-class saves.
He is fantastic and that is why he | 0:28:44 | 0:28:50
was newly crying in the interview.
He was nearly crying. Because he | 0:28:50 | 0:28:55
played so well and he got some
criticism over the last few months | 0:28:55 | 0:29:00
for England and what have you, but
yesterday he was phenomenal. But is | 0:29:00 | 0:29:04
the Joe Hart we know, making
unbelievable saves. I felt for him | 0:29:04 | 0:29:09
at the end because he would have
grabbed the headlines today and | 0:29:09 | 0:29:13
rightly so, because of his
performance, now we are talking | 0:29:13 | 0:29:16
about Antonio and what he should and
shouldn't have done. But the | 0:29:16 | 0:29:21
unprofessional line be accepted in
the dressing room because you would | 0:29:21 | 0:29:24
accept you had throw it away? From
him, because he is professional. If | 0:29:24 | 0:29:30
it was somebody not as professional
as him saying those things, you can | 0:29:30 | 0:29:33
question it but Joe Hart wears his
heart on his sleeve and there will | 0:29:33 | 0:29:38
be a lot of disappointed players are
not dressing room but you can take | 0:29:38 | 0:29:46
criticism of your peers if you
respect them. Tweets coming in, | 0:29:46 | 0:29:51
Antonio Lotz stood the two points,
so ridiculous not to keep the ball | 0:29:51 | 0:29:55
in the corner. Tom Jordan says,
coming back from 2-0 against Spurs | 0:29:55 | 0:30:00
and then drawing with the worst team
in the lead. Mark on Twitter says it | 0:30:00 | 0:30:05
is things like this that cost
managers their job. Adam Dyer on | 0:30:05 | 0:30:13
Twitter, not good enough, it is time
for a change at West Ham. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:17
It is a very difficult one, it is a
difficult week to sum up for West | 0:30:17 | 0:30:21
Ham? | 0:30:21 | 0:30:26 | |
It is ridiculous, I do feel for
village at the moment. He needed a | 0:30:26 | 0:30:30
hope that the full-time whistle! I
think there have been points this | 0:30:30 | 0:30:34
season when he thought, do I go or
am I going to be pushed? He has been | 0:30:34 | 0:30:37
that bad. One of those occasions was
after the Brighton game, I don't | 0:30:37 | 0:30:42
think he has at any point lost the
dressing room or the players, I | 0:30:42 | 0:30:45
think they've responded with that
incredible fightback as they showed | 0:30:45 | 0:30:51
at Wembley, and then yesterday,
where did you get to with that? | 0:30:51 | 0:30:55
Sometimes village can be down and I
do feel sorry for him but I think he | 0:30:55 | 0:30:59
has an expectation not just from the
fans but the owners which I think is | 0:30:59 | 0:31:03
incredibly unfair at times and I
think it has been difficult for him | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
to manage and come through, but I
still think they will stick with | 0:31:06 | 0:31:10
him, I think their tendency is to
stick with managers, the owners, and | 0:31:10 | 0:31:15
I think that is the right thing to
do. What I would say, after the | 0:31:15 | 0:31:19
defeat to Brighton, if the argument
was, they are not working hard, not | 0:31:19 | 0:31:23
playing for the manager, not putting
in the high-intensity runs, not | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
covering the distance, which was all
discussed on double Spurs game. The | 0:31:27 | 0:31:30
Spurs game they fall from two down,
the second half yesterday was | 0:31:30 | 0:31:35
fantastic, partly through West Ham's
defending, putting their bodies on | 0:31:35 | 0:31:39
the line, blocking everything, so
even though it is two points | 0:31:39 | 0:31:44
dropped, they still did what,
arguably, they hadn't been doing in | 0:31:44 | 0:31:48
the Brighton game? Of course, and I
think the decision made yesterday, | 0:31:48 | 0:31:53
it wasn't anyone's desire, it was a
bit of inexperience showing, I don't | 0:31:53 | 0:31:59
think you can even look at the
manager and criticise anything he | 0:31:59 | 0:32:02
has done for that one lack of
judgment from Antonia not to keep | 0:32:02 | 0:32:06
the ball in the corner and I think
it is just obviously the | 0:32:06 | 0:32:10
circumstances around West Ham is
bigger than this one performance. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:14
Yes, he was distraught after, you
saw him walking off the pitch | 0:32:14 | 0:32:16
shaking his head and as a manager
you prepare all we can do this, you | 0:32:16 | 0:32:20
put in a great performance in the
second half, and you shoot yourself | 0:32:20 | 0:32:23
in the foot in the last seconds of
the game, especially away from home, | 0:32:23 | 0:32:26
you could see how frustrating it
was. But for all managers, it seems | 0:32:26 | 0:32:31
every week a manager is getting
fired, under pressure, who is next | 0:32:31 | 0:32:35
ago, the bookies have a favourite,
it is a thankless job. It would be | 0:32:35 | 0:32:40
interesting to know what the Crystal
Palace texts and tweets would have | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
been if West Ham had held on because
now all of the Palace tweets are | 0:32:43 | 0:32:47
fairly positive. Clive, total
commitment, definitely staying up, | 0:32:47 | 0:32:52
Zaha was awesome, can't wait for a
fully fit first 11. Danielle, seeing | 0:32:52 | 0:32:57
that resilience is something I
haven't seen for many years, gives | 0:32:57 | 0:32:59
me more hope on avoiding the drop.
Jayden, kept going to the end, | 0:32:59 | 0:33:04
pleased with the point, should have
been more, performances have | 0:33:04 | 0:33:12
improved lately, we are desperate
for a striker. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:14
But if Michalak Tony had not done
what he had done and they had | 0:33:14 | 0:33:16
scored, they would have been
different tweets because they would | 0:33:16 | 0:33:18
be beaten at home by a relegation
rival. But it is not! As I said, | 0:33:18 | 0:33:26
they would just be pleased on both
sides, you feel like you have lost | 0:33:26 | 0:33:31
when you have gone to nil up and
then draw 2-2, and vice versa when | 0:33:31 | 0:33:36
you are down. Palace are not adrift,
but what I would say is that they | 0:33:36 | 0:33:39
have dropped so many points in an
early stage of the season. I felt | 0:33:39 | 0:33:44
when Roy Hodgson went in there that
he would keep them up because he is | 0:33:44 | 0:33:48
an experienced manager, say what you
like about him but I thought he | 0:33:48 | 0:33:51
could get enough out of that good
group of players. It is not really | 0:33:51 | 0:33:55
working out like that at the moment,
at some point during the course of | 0:33:55 | 0:33:59
the season they will have another
lull and this bad opening to the | 0:33:59 | 0:34:03
season, they are not adrift. 85058

has made 65 starts, 31 from the

laid against him, what is he like to
mark? Very elusive. You don't want | 0:34:25 | 0:34:32
to face him one-on-one. He can go
both sides, very nimble changing | 0:34:32 | 0:34:37
direction. I'm a big fan, he gets a
lot of criticism for missing games | 0:34:37 | 0:34:43
but when he is fit and playing, it
did not surprise me that he scored | 0:34:43 | 0:34:47
yesterday, it does not surprise me
whenever you scores because he is a | 0:34:47 | 0:34:52
top talent. He can just create
something out of nothing | 0:34:52 | 0:34:58
top talent. He can just create
something out of nothing. He gets a | 0:34:58 | 0:35:02
lot of stick from missing so many
games... Were you at city when he | 0:35:02 | 0:35:06
was a kid? Yeah, he felt he had a
better opportunity going to Chelsea | 0:35:06 | 0:35:13
and he played more, from a young age
she thought it would not get an | 0:35:13 | 0:35:18
opportunity here, get a fresh start
somewhere else and you have to give | 0:35:18 | 0:35:21
him credit for that. A couple of
seasons ago for Liverpool he was on | 0:35:21 | 0:35:30
fire and I think the fans just want
that Daniel Sturridge back but he | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
has had injury problems and cannot
get up to that level. It is simple | 0:35:33 | 0:35:37
to get that Daniel Sturridge back,
is it down to his personal fitness | 0:35:37 | 0:35:41
rather than how Liverpool set up,
how they play, the players around | 0:35:41 | 0:35:45
him? I don't think he has done
anything wrong, I think he has just | 0:35:45 | 0:35:50
been unlucky, he is not a
professional, he does everything by | 0:35:50 | 0:35:53
the book. Because he is so quick, so
explosive, you will pick of these | 0:35:53 | 0:35:58
injuries and niggles, how do you
stop that? I don't know, I am not a | 0:35:58 | 0:36:03
professional in that department. No,
no you are not! He is a brilliant | 0:36:03 | 0:36:08
technical player, he is one of
those, if you were picking five | 0:36:08 | 0:36:12
strikers for England, he is sort of
the one out of the ordinary, the | 0:36:12 | 0:36:18
Joker in the packed comedy genuine
-- he genuinely is. His finish | 0:36:18 | 0:36:22
yesterday summed him up as a player,
it was an outrageous finish, | 0:36:22 | 0:36:28
something special. He can add so
much. We all thought maybe he was | 0:36:28 | 0:36:33
not a clock player but he gets
enough minutes, does enough damage | 0:36:33 | 0:36:37
to justify a regular first place.
For England at the World Cup, would | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
you take him and use him as an
impact player off the bench? 100%. I | 0:36:41 | 0:36:47
think he is likely better than that
but I think it is difficult at this | 0:36:47 | 0:36:50
point in time with Harry Kane being
such an outstanding player, can you | 0:36:50 | 0:36:55
justify two in the starting line-up?
Harry Kane has been so prolific of | 0:36:55 | 0:36:59
late for his country but Daniel
Sturridge for me get in the squad, | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
in and around the starting line-up
every day of the week. I agree with | 0:37:02 | 0:37:07
that, Daniel Sturridge has to go, if
he is fit, to the World Cup. But you | 0:37:07 | 0:37:11
would not play him with Harry Kane?
I could see him, he likes to play | 0:37:11 | 0:37:17
short, get involved in the build-up
paper may does not mind providing | 0:37:17 | 0:37:21
assists, so I think they could play
together but again you have got Dele | 0:37:21 | 0:37:25
Alli who has a great relationship
with Harry Kane, both performing at | 0:37:25 | 0:37:29
club level. I'm glad I'm not the
manager! Let's move on to the late | 0:37:29 | 0:37:37
again this afternoon, Leicester
taking on Everton. | 0:37:37 | 0:37:42
Claude Puel will take charge
of Leicester for the first time. | 0:37:42 | 0:37:47
It is an opportunity, especially
Leicester, for me it is a great | 0:37:47 | 0:37:51
club, great fans, fantastic
opportunity. There are difficulties | 0:37:51 | 0:38:00
in this moment but it is a good
challenge, good challenge, and I | 0:38:00 | 0:38:04
have a good feeling to come here and
now to be a fox is fantastic. | 0:38:04 | 0:38:16
Claude Puel well in one technical
area, David Unsworth in the other as | 0:38:16 | 0:38:23
he continues to make his case for
getting the job at Everton | 0:38:23 | 0:38:27
permanently. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:28
Conor McNamara is at
the King Power Stadium today. | 0:38:28 | 0:38:31
So far this season in the Premier
League three clubs have chosen to | 0:38:31 | 0:38:35
change manager and we see two of
them against each other head-to-head | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
today. I was at Goodison Park last
weekend commentating on Everton's | 0:38:38 | 0:38:44
defeat Arsenal, dropping into the
relegation zone, but there was not a | 0:38:44 | 0:38:46
mood of anger amongst the Everton
fans, it had almost reached the | 0:38:46 | 0:38:51
stage of acceptance, disconsolate
mood, and may be that much as | 0:38:51 | 0:38:54
anything forced the owners' hands.
David Unsworth gets the chance today | 0:38:54 | 0:38:58
to see how he fares as a manager in | 0:38:58 | 0:39:10
the Premier hope for the lift a new
man often gets with the dressing | 0:39:10 | 0:39:13
room trying to impress the new
manager but he will be well aware | 0:39:13 | 0:39:15
that Claude Puel will get the same
effect from the Leicester City | 0:39:15 | 0:39:18
players ahead of his first game in
charge in the Premier League at the | 0:39:18 | 0:39:20
club. He knows he has a talented
squad, virtually the team that won | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
the league under Claudio Ranieri,
and how ironic it was this fixture, | 0:39:23 | 0:39:26
Leicester City hosting Everton, on
the day Leicester were crowned | 0:39:26 | 0:39:28
Premier League champions. There has
been water under the bridge since | 0:39:28 | 0:39:30
then, Ranieri had a poor start last
season, Shakespeare had a poor start | 0:39:30 | 0:39:34
this season, and the Leicester fans
would not swap their happy memories, | 0:39:34 | 0:39:37
but thinking back to Andrea Bocelli
singing lessons or mamba pitcher, it | 0:39:37 | 0:39:41
all feels a very long time ago now. | 0:39:41 | 0:39:46
When Claude Puel was announced, on 5
Live people were saying, this is not | 0:39:46 | 0:39:50
too bad, if you look at his record,
he won in Monaco, Lyon in the | 0:39:50 | 0:39:55
Champions League semifinal, but
Southampton to eight, made the | 0:39:55 | 0:39:57
League Cup final last year, they are
right, aren't they? He is a Fox now | 0:39:57 | 0:40:02
as well! I don't know, it just
doesn't inspire me, I have seen his | 0:40:02 | 0:40:09
interviews and I see him and if I
was in the changing room I would be | 0:40:09 | 0:40:13
thinking, is he inspiring? He might
be different in the changing room. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:18
Possibly, I could be doing him a
disservice because of the language | 0:40:18 | 0:40:26
difference, in Lyon, he had the
language there as well. You imagine | 0:40:26 | 0:40:32
him in the changing room trying to
get the best of the players in the | 0:40:32 | 0:40:35
team... I don't know, the Leicester
fans will hope he does great, of | 0:40:35 | 0:40:39
course, but he doesn't inspire me,
there are no British or Irish | 0:40:39 | 0:40:43
managers or coaches getting an
opportunity... Although he is | 0:40:43 | 0:40:46
replacing a British manager in Craig
Shakespeare. I will get my coat | 0:40:46 | 0:40:49
them. I was just making the point!
Point taken! On you! His record | 0:40:49 | 0:41:03
speaks for itself, no one is
doubting his ability as a manager | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
and I was surprised he left
Southampton last season but in terms | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
of what Leicester need, reports
suggesting they want to attract | 0:41:09 | 0:41:15
bigger names, potentially still
riding the wave of winning the | 0:41:15 | 0:41:18
league, attracting bigger names, for
me that puts pressure on him to go | 0:41:18 | 0:41:21
out and provide what they have said
they will deliver on, attracting | 0:41:21 | 0:41:25
bigger players. He fits into their
structure, though, doesn't he? I'm | 0:41:25 | 0:41:29
trying to convince all three of you,
putting the other point of view! But | 0:41:29 | 0:41:34
they have their director of
football, their backroom staff has | 0:41:34 | 0:41:37
often stayed the same whether it has
been Pearson, Ranieri, Shakespeare, | 0:41:37 | 0:41:49
they tend to keep the same people in
the background. He did that at | 0:41:49 | 0:41:51
Southampton as well, did not
necessarily bring in a new team. It | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
is easy to say that the dressing
room suits and Englishmen being in | 0:41:54 | 0:41:56
charge, forgetting the fact that
Claudio Ranieri is the Italian who | 0:41:56 | 0:41:59
won the title with them! Say what
you like about Ranieri but that is a | 0:41:59 | 0:42:03
fact. It seems to me that along the
way people were desperately trying | 0:42:03 | 0:42:06
to detract from his achievement,
which is so unfair. Coldwell is | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
interesting in that there were two
sides to him at Southampton, the | 0:42:10 | 0:42:14
site where they did indeed finished
eighth and arguably deserved to win | 0:42:14 | 0:42:18
the League Cup | 0:42:18 | 0:42:28
final, then decide where they were
desperately dull at home, couldn't | 0:42:41 | 0:42:43
score goals, were not inspiring the
home fans, and if you ask | 0:42:43 | 0:42:46
Southampton fans, I would say that
they were not particularly surprised | 0:42:46 | 0:42:48
when he went because that is what
the club do but I don't think they | 0:42:48 | 0:42:51
were particularly disappointed
either. We have about a minute to | 0:42:51 | 0:42:53
talk Everton and on the basis that
you might still be talking to me, | 0:42:53 | 0:42:55
David Unsworth, yes or no? I would
love to see him get the job, he has | 0:42:55 | 0:42:59
got Everton in his blood, I would
love to see him get the opportunity | 0:42:59 | 0:43:01
to get the big job at Everton and
bring the club forward, the bookies | 0:43:01 | 0:43:04
will have four or five foreigners
lined up, I'm sure, but why not give | 0:43:04 | 0:43:07
David Unsworth the chance? He has
got Everton in his blood, | 0:43:07 | 0:43:09
considering that Ronald Koeman
seemed to spend a lot of time | 0:43:09 | 0:43:12
flirting with Barcelona. I think
that is a massive 's selling point | 0:43:12 | 0:43:14
to the Evertonians. The effort
needed to play for an Everton team, | 0:43:14 | 0:43:19
David Unsworth knows that. The
positive fear, going full circle, | 0:43:19 | 0:43:23
even though we criticised the under
23 league, he won the under 23 lead | 0:43:23 | 0:43:28
and he will play some of the kids?
Yes, he has that connection with the | 0:43:28 | 0:43:32
young kids coming through, Everton
should be so proud of their youth | 0:43:32 | 0:43:35
system and the way big evolve kids,
and I don't think there is a better | 0:43:35 | 0:43:40
fit at this particular moment in
time that Unsworth, who has got | 0:43:40 | 0:43:43
their faith and their aspirations
that heart and can bring them | 0:43:43 | 0:43:46
through, given the chance. Thank you
all very much for your company today | 0:43:46 | 0:43:51
on Match of the Day 2 extra.

later tonight. -- Leicester Everton. | 0:43:58 | 0:44:02 |
