Round 12 - Indianapolis MotoGP

We're at one of the most famous motor sports venues on the planet

or rent roll of the championship. This is MotoGP at the Brickyard,

and it promises to be another crucial chapter in the title chase.

Jorge Lorenzo rolled the dice last time out. Everyone went for her

heart went by and he went soft. But look like the gamble had paid off

after the first lap but it backfired shortly after, as Pedrosa

been quickest all weekend, but it counted for nothing in the end.

That left Casey Stoner to his 6th win of the year, and it got better

and better for him as a first Dovizioso and then Simoncelli

pushed past Lorenzo. The is going to let his hair down and go for it!

And Pascoe's Simoncelli - she is on the podium as commission mark a

sideshow Bob taking centre-stage at last, with his first podium in

MotoGP. In the championship in it all adds up to a 32 point lead for

Casey Stoner over Jorge Lorenzo. Dovizioso strength and his Holden

de place. Ben Spies is the leading American in sixth place. Just ahead

of Nicky Hayden. It is a big weekend for all three Americans.

Colin Evans, 9th in the championship. They do not get much

prouder to be racing at this legendary venue than Colin. What a

feeling it must be. For us Americans, Indianapolis, a lot of

history and childhood memories of seeing Indy 500, and it is just a

special place. The mystique of it is more than ever. You'd do not get

much prouder Americans than yourself and you have had a special

helmet made for this weekend. have something special, made by a

couple of Chartered friends. They have put the Navy Seal emblem up

here. When we heard that a bunch of them had lost their lives, it was

just one of those things that we had to do, to be proud of them. We

put a throttle in the right hand. That is a small modification. That

is all that I can do. Hats off to all those guys. Good luck today.

Home MotoGP is awesome. In the first couple of years we did not

have an American round so I know that it is awesome. Especially at

Laguna Seca. Because my brothers are raising, and that is pretty

cool to get to go racing with my brothers. Indianapolis is much

closer to Kentucky. It is my home MotoGP. We have got some big ones

in Italy, raiding for an Italian team. There is a lot of racing

still to do. I know that everyone is excited for next year. So am I,

but I would love to finish strongly and have my best year ever on 900.

It is also on. I would not to make it. I would take a bullet or any

one of them, my family. They understand the pressure and all

that comes along with it, and it is nice when you can share with them,

the good days. It also helps with training, when you go out riding

from your House. You do not have to get to the track ready, yourself,

pole may always does that. It is nice to have someone there to push

you, to bounce ideas off of, and to talk about training. So my family

is a big part of my life and I am fortunate to have such a good grip

behind me. -- group. I have wanted a softer Jacey, since the boss time

bit more horsepower than me, when he asks for it, things happen, and

hope for the, the things that he is asking for will trickle down to me,

Running is a big part of it. The bike starts in the pan. Any rider

needs to have the feel and to be able to get the bike to turn. I

would say that there still the number one problem. That is a

little bit of an issue. We do not have one big thing holding us back

that we can put all the focus on. It is a little bit everywhere. It

used to be that we had the best engine. Now the top speed is not so

good and everyone has caught up. We need to improve everywhere. We need

to get better stability and more steel on the corner exit to the

rear of the bike. We know that when the package is right, it is very

dangerous, the bike is a weapon, it is a little bit too sharp when it

is working good, but when the Silverstone conditions were good I

was the fastest guy on the track. There is Nicky Hayden. Just making

his final preparations. 25 minutes to go until race time. A big

weekend for Nicky Hayden. He is a family guy. We have a new helmet

for the race. His sister got married last weekend. He has had a

special helmet done. Nice touch. It is a real family affair. Not only

has he made that gesture, his younger sister Kathy is the

umbrella girl for me. It has been a family affair and it has been a

busy couple of weeks for your family. He is, my sister got

married last week, and it is the warm MotoGP for Nicky this weekend.

I am trying to stay busy. But my brother asked me, he is an amicable

die. He just needed a little bit of extra work and that is why I said I

would hold this for him. I and you have done a better racing yourself.

When I was younger, but being the youngest of five I had a lot to end

the ban, and it did not work out. A what is it like having him as a

brother? He is just humble. He is a class act, for sure. Enjoy it. It

is a big weekend for Nicky Hayden. The Kentucky Kid, they Col him. He

has had his work cut out. It is a huge circuit in Indianapolis. It is

a long walk for the riders to get from the offices to the back of the

pits. It is a nice opportunity for the fans to get their pictures

taken, and to get a few autographss. Let me tell you, this circuit was

packed out, it was packed out in town last night. What they might

lack in numbers here right now they -- make up for in enthusiasm. Once

again we have been less to brew more problems for Ducati. The

miracle cure from last week has not work. There is nothing awesome

about the product of that Ducati. Nicky Hayden is the best of them

and he is on the third row. have been scratching your head as

well, steep. Yes, the same as Jeremy Burgess and everyone else.

We're from the key and, he wants a softer chassis, but they cannot

have that with the engine they have out the back. I don't think we're

going to see a softer chassis before the end of the season.

Simoncelli has had a poor position and a victory in 2008, at 2009. He

comes to MotoGP having broken a podium duck. How much of a relief

was it after the season you have had to finally get that podium?

am very happy because of this result, because, for me, from the

beginning of the year, me and the team deserve this result, and

finally, we have got it, so I am really happy and I hope to continue

this season in this way. Thank you, Marco, and good luck. It was a

relieved to see him up on the podium. He has been threatening all

season. Great scenes in the Czech Republic. He has been staring down

the barrel. It is good for him to get it. It is a monkey off his back.

It puts some bread between him and the first part of the year when

everyone hated him so much. certainly did not hate him, he is

spectacular to watch. Like many of the riders, he has found problems

with the track surface. It has been difficult to find a way. We know

that he has got a factory bike, as such, but he has not got a factory

team. The guys that he has got to beat Alan better bikes with better

engineers. It is going to come for him, for sure, but he has got over

that bad-boy image and let us hope that he puts it together. This new

track surface has been really up for this weekend. It has produced

problems over the course of the weekend. Some question marks going

into the race. It was alright flogging around doing race

simulations, but as soon as we put a good tyre on the beer, it made

the front pushed too much. And it a different path alive after two laps.

But you do is not so bad but that is destroying the front. Casey

Stoner is ludicrously fast over a lap, but he has not done a race won,

Ben Spies has done, and he says that he thinks the base will be

closer. Interesting conundrums border riders to solve over the

course of this race. One thing is for certain - the new tracks of

practice, and less than half of what we had last year - 70 crashes

in all, last year, more than any other circuit in dry weather on the

calendar. It is not good news for the factories to have to rebuild

Over the years, here at Indianapolis, they have been kept

pretty busy. Indianapolis is one of the newest additions to the

calendar. We have only been coming here for three years and have had

three different winners. In 2008 there was a hurricane and nearly

upstaged the main attraction. red flag, that is it. That is going

to declare a results for Valentino Rossi. It is the worst conditions

of all my career. Valentino Rossi was fighting for the win again in

2009, but it was Jorge Lorenzo who stole the show. Unbelievable!

Valentino Rossi has just given away 25 points. Jorge Lorenzo crosses

the line as winner. 12 months ago Ben Spies but the home fans fired

up by getting pole position, but it was Dani Pedrosa who took the

chequered flag. Dani Pedrosa wins in the Brickyard. The teams and

riders love coming here, the iconic fact that it is the Wimbledon of

motor racing. At turn one they're off the main straight into this

corner. It is scary. 200 miles an hour. You have got to get all the

way down to second gear, on the front brake. What has let this

place down has been the patchwork quilt of surfaces. It has been

bumpy and blow to people fell off. Even Valentino Rossi crashed out

three times in practice. There was never really any complaints about

the first four corners, but it turned five other riders said it

was the motocross track. They have resurfaced 1.5 miles of the circuit.

It is like a billiard table compared to how it was. This turned

five is why Bridgestone have had to bring their hardest higher here.

They are really sliding through here. Here at turn nine and it is

still flat. Even Valentino Rossi looks happy about it. It must have

cost an absolute fortune to do this. Let's have the guys enjoy it.

It seems as if Valentino Rossi could have been better off to stay

with the little scooter. It was probably handling better than his

Ducati. He is the third Ducati. Valentino Rossi got qualifying off

to a bang with an early crash. Casey Stoner on at the Honda was in

this zone. Ben Spies was the only other guy remotely in touch with

Casey Stoner. Were gay Lorenzo has been behind us his team-mates in

every session and he had a really difficult qualifying and concede he

He started from pole position last year and finished second. He has

not been back on the podium since he took his maiden victory back in

June. His only? Is a trapped nerve in his shoulder. Jorge Lorenzo he

rounds out the front row. The first time we had I took Yamaha

motorcycles on the front row this season. Let's have a look at Cal

Crutchlow. It has been a tough weekend for him. There is Colin

Edwards. He is the top riders here not with the factory. I heard last

night that he is not going to be with the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team

next year. I could performance from Cal Crutchlow on a performance - -

on a track that he does not know. James, we would all like to see you

back idea. A bit of resentment when you come back, still wishing to be

out here? Obviously, I still miss it. I will be back. You never know,

in the future at will just see what opportunities come up. How is your

hand? I saw Charlie Cox and he had a similar injury one week after me,

and he is struggling to still hold the beer glass. That's a big thing

for him! I know! It really opened my eyes to how serious this injury

could be. I have another couple of questions for you. What do you make

of the transition by Cal Crutchlow? You have had a positive start, but

it is not is easy as people think, is it? No, it certainly is not.

With the slowest bike, it is not easy at all. He has had an

operation as well since Silverstone. When you lose a bit of confidence

because of the crash, it is a very difficult job. He has qualified

pretty well. If you get a good start, you never know. What about

the Three guys on the front row, he is Germany on? If Casey Stoner gets

a good start, I can see a ten- second gap between first and third

today. I think there is only really Ben Spies to match him this weekend.

Thanks very much for talking to us, James is predicting that this race

could get stretched out. If it doesn't, well, question-marks about

how well the track will work in the second part of the race. We could

Cox! I can understand why your hand is not healing as quickly. This is

going to be a very interesting race. The big question is how out the

tyres will manage across the race is a balance between tyre pressure

minute which part of the track has been resurfaced, 1.5 miles of it.

If you run off-line then it is very difficult. This is coming up to

dissection word has been resurfaced. It is all brand new. The sad thing

is it is a shame they did not put at higher risk on beforehand.

Stoner was very unhappy about the group level. But Casey Stoner was

so astonishingly fast. He is like a kid that doesn't like any of his

Christmas presents! He is faster on the circuit than anybody has ever

been! We should see some action many of those as replicas, unless

you just the family members! Casey Stoner can bag a win this

weekend, he is going to be breaking the rest of the field because he

has already got that Dougherty two- point lead. He sounds nervous to me.

Who is not nervous when you are starting a 32 lap race in the sort

of temperatures? He has talked his way into it been harder than I

think it might be. He needs a clean start, to get away in front.

Passing is going to be difficult. It is going to be a dying line.

Lots of rubber being washed out. No real grip as soon as you are off of

the racing line. This is a huge place. It is of huge event.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I can tell you one thing about the Motor

City. There is no Greenpeace offices here! They away. Pretty

good start from Lorenzo, on the right. Casey Stoner is absolutely

flying. Round the outside, Dani Pedrosa, always a good starter, and

everyone is around two and three, clearly, Casey Stoner is holding

the line. Ben Spies caught completely bogged down in the

middle of that line. He is clearly of the bike! Casey Stoner has gone

back into third place. Very costly for Ben Spies. He has hung out to

die now. His team-mate the second. We know that Dani Pedrosa stars

like a firecracker, from Jorge Lorenzo, the reigning champion.

Nicky Hayden has had a quiet. got blocked in there, much of that

was down to Nicky Hayden, who got jammed inside. It is the home race

and your family are all here, but now Casey Stoner has got to do what

he was talking about and find a way of passing people on this awkward

track. He we're on the interval. Look at those marbles on the track

that Steve was talking about. Feeding through. We're going to

join the big oval. We're on the inside of the track now. A cracking

pace from Dani Pedrosa. He qualified more than one second

slower than his team-mate, Casey Stoner, who was on pole. Up on to

the banking now, for turn 16. At 200 miles an hour, before setting

up, and Dani Pedrosa gets it into that awkward turn. Across the slope

of the pastime. One down into the Brickyard. Casey Stoner looking for

a way past the reps all. -- the Repsol Honda. Behind them, the

thought of the Repsol Hondas, Dovizioso. When was the last time?

We have not even mentioned Valentino Rossi. He is than intent

place at the moment. He did not make a lot of ground up. The that

is the big move. Simoncelli looked perilously close to those marbles.

second place now. If you wanted anyone to be due round there, as

Casey Stoner, it would be Dani Pedrosa. He is not in the hunt for

the championship. So, there is Marco Simoncelli. He is forming in

on the back of his best buddy, Jorge Lorenzo. He would like to see

him arrested, I think! Down the back straight we go. Casey Stoner,

starting to get closer. Hector Barbera, trying to get past

Valentino Rossi. That is not in the script! Valentino Rossi, we were

expecting him do end up being the fastest and the highest up the

leaderboard or the Ducatis at the end of the race. He got jammed into

the curl up. It all went horribly wrong. Your home is, as such, and

everything seems to go against you. Getting down as fixed-rate and then

front of him. You can see the two Repsol Hondas, number 26 and 27.

This is Marco Simoncelli. Just be careful! It is Marco, can you come

out to play?! It is me, the guy with the hair! The Yamahas still

enjoying the handling. The is a very sweet handling motorcycle. It

looks it from where I am sad here now. They got new components and up

thes of the engines. Bearing in mind it would only be another

engine into the system, but both of them said that it was a minute

advantage that they got with the test at Brno. There is the Honda

behind, the factory Honda that Marco Simoncelli is on. He is in

the slipstream. He is not gobbling up that gap. He is the biggest

rider in the field. Looking at Nicky Hayden, paying a bit of a

price, trying to go round the outside! Is he close enough? Can he

do it? Boy, old boy! That was scary, as Pedrosa pushed him back. By the

time Dovizioso de grips from that it will be all over. -- regroups.

Casey Stoner is the first into a 1.39 per lap. Do the seal so there,

Bike a matter of the 7th. His team- mate is in front of him. He wants

to get past. No surprise that Dani Pedrosa beaten into the first turn,

but the surprise that Casey Stoner has close them down. Casey Stoner

will be thinking about tyres. Do I want to get past, tried to run out

a lead, and then gone out my tyres? He is generally easier on tyres,

because of the weight factor. And because it is very sweet riding

style. Casey Stoner is the more aggressive of the two riders. He

does not crash it as such. It is amazing to watch him. That was

Marco Simoncelli, the body language of bike number 58. The current

champion back in front. Spinning up, coming out of turn 16. All the work

that Marco Simoncelli had done, getting past, he has got to do it

again. The thing that Casey Stoner has to consider, in second place

behind his team-mate, Dani Pedrosa, he has got to conserve his tyres,

but by the same token, but appears not in front he is not riding his

own race, so he cannot be as smooth as he would want to be. This is all

going through your head as -- at the same time as you are trying to

write one of these monsters around the circuit, so you have got to

take all of that into account. Casey Stoner will be having a good

look at the clipboard everything he comes through, and when he has a

big enough gap the Hendon, you can explore how easy it would be to get

past. -- gap behind you. Number 11 is on a roll. He is coming through

nicely. He will never recover from that mistake because he is out of

touch with Casey Stoner and Dani Pedrosa. You do not get those guys

a five-second head-start, Ben Spies. A in my opinion he was the only

other rider on another manufacturer's machine, the Yamaha

in the 50th anniversary covers, as it was in Laguna Seca, he was going

to be running with these guys have got a clear track. He has decided

mate's bike. Rear tyres do not seem to be a problem. It has been the

front everyone has suffered with. They are running the softest front

compounded they can. And it is still pretty hard. It is an

interesting concept that you sometimes run a softer tyre than

you want, even though the front tyres wear. With the harder tyre,

you get not as much grip. But bearing in mind it is the softer

tyre, it is still a very hard pan! -- tyre. Only Nicky Hayden is

running the softer of the two neatly. This time around, we will

get a clearer idea of how they can perform. The only guys in the 40s

are Pedrosa, Stoner and Lorenzo. That was the moment when it all

come back to Jorge Lorenzo. He almost ended up on top of the

Curragh. But the real top of the side that he lost it and he has

lost a lot of time -- the curve. I have never seen so much rubber on a

track. It looks like her car brace. -- a car race. If you look over,

Whether that is an issue with tyres. He is last on the track, behind

Karel Abraham. He is right that the back of the field. He is just

coasting. That is his 4th place in the championship out of the window.

His season is getting worse, not better. Ben Spies is still

struggling. He can't get past these two. Nicky Hayden hung out wide

there, and Andrea Dovizioso went through. Maybe they are going to

change the tire of Valentino Rossi. That is a very sad sight. This is

an Indy Car circuit, guys, so you have an inner pit road as well as a

pit lane. He is confusing when you have to go around the opposite way.

Casey Stoner still the guy a doing 39. Here is the replay. That was

very, very close. Andrea Dovizioso up the inside. I think he will soon

see a Yamaha moving upon him. This is where Ben Spies is fast, the

infield section. Would you run up again, I think he is! He might have

had a rotten start, but he is having about as much fun as you can

with you're leathers on. That is two different moves into laps.

Perfect. He is up into 5th place. Ben Spies is really on a move.

Their next target for him is Marco Simoncelli. He is Andrea Dovizioso

having a bit of the moment. - - tucked in a tiny bit there. It was

enough for Ben Spies to know that was a green light for him to get

past. When Casey Stoner is at the front, he keeps braking all the

Casey Stoner is putting a lot of it there himself! 18 laps remaining.

him at least to be the lead Ducati. He always manages to pull himself

when you run wide here because there is no grip. Marco Simoncelli

is basically working himself backwards at the moment. Then Spies

is now lapping faster than Casey Stoner. Next on his list is Jorge

of Nicky Hayden. He won't be wearing that Helmut again! Nicky

Hayden being chased by Colin Edwards, who also has a different

bet about eight seconds of that was on the first lap. I could

consolation prize for Ben Spies getting on the podium. Spare a

thought for Nicky Hayden who had an absolute shocker. Alvaro Bautista

it is not hurting his championship race at all. So, Casey Stoner, from

Jorge Lorenzo. Dani Pedrosa has moved up into 4th place. Jorge

Lorenzo is sort of smiling, but you can be pleased because the gap is

stretching out. Valentino Rossi has brought to Championship places, not

one, because at that performance. Valentino Rossi is now back in 6th

Probably one of the best rides at your life if you had made a better

start. Yes, I pause and terribly bad, but just a lot of people got

best I could. It was very hard to pass out there because we could not

Valentino Rossi who salvaged a top 10 finish. I would love to know why

she pulled off and then managed to get his speed back. He has always

been pretty special. The Formula One guys raced on this the other

way round, but it is mostly known for the Oval, and what an oval it

Casey Stoner, congratulations. proved in the race. I made a few

mistakes and did not have any brakes. I touched Dani Pedrosa and

ran wide. It was very difficult to find somewhere to overtake on this

track because if you were not on the correct line, you're on the

dirt and you would be gone. We just did the best we could with the bike.

I am pretty happy with how it once today. It was just about getting

out to my home. I think the front tyre could have been worse but I

was having to push it. We got a good enough start to stay up with

the front guys and then made her way through. At big thank-you to
