Laguna Seca MotoGP

Good evening. No gold medals on offer here, but one last bit of

international top-class action for you to finish off your sporting

Sunday with. We're at the legendary Laguna Seca for round ten of the

MotoGP championship here in California. Cal Crutchlow lines up

on the grid in fifth place. The boys are ready to go and the race

is ready to start in about a minute's time.

Casey Stoner is in second, and Dani Pedrosa is in third place. Let's go

to our commentators. Just before the race gets under way, some news

and there's plenty of it. First of all, a big shoblg, Ben Spies

announcing he is going to leave Yamaha at the end of the season.

This will be his last race for Yamaha. And the astonishing thing

about Spies' announcement is that he has not told us where he's going.

There is talk of him going back to the land of BMW. And I'm surprised

he's announced it before the he's announced it before the

beginning of this race. Nicky Haden is staying with due

yacty, but that leaves questions -- Ducati, but that leaves questions

about Valentino. . Yes, but he's coming towards the

end of his career and it would be such a shame for his legacy to be

tainted with Ducati because things haven't worked out. And that's that

fantastic helmet design. Yeah, I think it's a bit two-faced.

The talk is that Valentino has been offered 17 million euros to stay at

Ducati. But you imagine whichever ride he doesn't take that will be

the best option for Cal. And they're expecting a decision from

Valentino within a week. So we should know where all the pieces of

the jigsaw are going to fit together for 2013.

Here we are lining up on the grid. Isle' leave Matt to bask in the

sunshine and enjoy it. Stoner and pedroseo on the front of

the grid, -- Pedrosa. This is the shortest track we go on,

it's fast and furious. 32 laps. The revs are up in California. A

brilliant start from Lorenzo. Lorenzo absolutely up there like a

duck. Pedrosa trying to go round. It's too site tight Nice move from

Spies. Stoner -- oh, no, it can't happen any more!

So many crashes for that team an absolute nightmare for them.

Up front, Lorenzo leads from pole. A fantastic start for him.

Pedrosa, the customary bump off the line didn't work for him. Stoner

having a good look down the inside of his teammate. Casey Stoner

disappointed not to get pole position, he said he was held up by

traffic. 32 laps down that course, fantastic.

That is the most astonishing corner anywhere on the circuit. Just

observer two miles the circuit. Back across the stripe for the

first time and it's Lorenzo, Stoner and Pedrosa and they're already

dropping the rest of the kids off. This is really helping Lorenzo.

He's not getting away yet. Stoner is the guy with the pace, it's

whether or not he can run it through the rest of the race.

They're all saying it's a very dusty track, and offline it's

really, really slippery and to pass you have to get offline. So it is

going to be tricky. Look at that, Pedrosa right on the

back wheel, and Stoner having another look.

This is the drag up the hill, it's a monster up and over, blind

sighted over the apex and then line up for the Corkscrew again.

It is a ten-storey drop from here. You can't see the drop on TV. But

it is a monstrous drop. That's the end of Elias on the Pramac. That's

all over. Turn 11, and bunching on the corner. This is the best thing

they have as a straight, but it's not really straight at all.

there's a bend in it and it's very short and with a climb.

250 break horse power around this tiny track. It is like having a

race horse in your back garden. He won't run his teammate out into

the dirt. He's through, now can he work on Lorenzo. One thing might be

getting past Lorenzo, then making it stick because Lorenzo has

serious pace. We saw it yesterday. Crutchlow is back in sixth.

Bird in seventh and Haden back in ninth.

-- Hayden. Here's the start. Lorenzo anticipated it fabulous ly

well and there you can see already that Crutchlow has been testing a

great deal and he's been jumped and he gets tangle up with...It Was the

48 there ran him out wide. We'll have another look. It all started

with Pirro clipping the back.. was optimistic, and the door has

been well and truly slammed. And we work our way through the ride now.

This is great stuff from Stoner's bike.

A huge crowd here, the biggest I've seen in a while. 64,000 people have

turned up this weekend. Back up the hill, climbing,

climbing. This corner here is so important to them. Yes, and over

the top to the blind part. Temperatures coming up very, very

nicely. A full tank of fuel, 21 litres.

I'm noticing that the two front guys are running with the harder-

option tyre. Stoner is pretty tough on the boots

but already they're putting space between themselves and Dani Pedrosa,

rapid fire that time. 21.3 for the pair of them. 21.2 for Lorenzo.

Really, really quick and they're chipping away. And it's 21.376 was

the lap record, but that's already gone. Stoner has the softer tyres

on. He wasn't sure what he would run. But a new lap record for Jorge

race, they'll need it. It's such a busy track and quite abrasive with

all the sand on it. Casey Stoner trying to get past Jorge Lorenzo,

the 2010 champion. And Lorenzo has a nice cushion in

the championship at the moment. Stoner looks the fastest to me at

the moment. Yeah, it's just whether or not he can make this last or run

out of boots before the end and we saw him sucked off the strategic at

the German circuit, the stacksen ring, and he lost it at the end.

yesterday puncturing one of the air fences. And Ben Spies has a cracked

heel that he's limping around on at the moment. It's been a crash-fest

all weekend. Lorenzo and Hayden cracked in the

warm-up. And Hayden had a break issue as well. There is the plummet

down the hill. All the way down to Rainey Curve. It a 200-foot drop in

that short distance. That's the Cal Crutchlow crash

corner that he had on Friday. It wrecked the bike but he was

perfectly OK. He's still in sixth position.

These laps are peeling off mighty fast.

A tenth of a second separates the two boys at the front.

That's the run for fourth, fifth, and sixth. There's Nicky Hayden

being followed by Rossi. Nicky Hayden has now qualified before

Rossi in the last six races. Still at the front, Stoner all over

him, where is he going to pass him? Oh, this looks big, but it's too

close. Last year he passed Jorge Lorenzo over the top: Stoner and

Rossi had a slamming together a few years back and then Rossi saw

Stoner off, it was the beginning of his end that year. He knows Stoner

is there, he won't need to look at his lap chart to know it's plus

nought. He'll hear him behind him. That was the end of a lovely

relationship between Valentino and Stoner.

Stoner again having a little sniff. It could be a dive up the inside

into this one. That's a popular overtaking place into turn three.

But it's so tricky. It's not wide and the line is so precise because

it's so slippery offline. You can see the dust on the circuit off

line. You can see the difference in the shading of the Tarmac.

A lot of tension here. It's a long, hot, hard race. 32 laps, 25

remaining. But these guys are athletes out there. They have

drinks bottles in their packs. So they will be able to quench their

thirst a little bit. They have special valve systems on

the bottles, they're called camel packs. Pedrosa responding to the

early pace of the front two, Lorenzo and Stoner. Stoner gave it

everything he had. And everyone gets to their feet as they pass

them. 260ks, way short of the 200 miles an hour we see on the longer-

straight circuits. It's such a short, fiddly circuit. And if

you're saying he is riding with a crushed heel he must be in agony.

He told me on the press conference that a lot of weight was off his

shoulders and he doesn't have to hold that pressure from the factree

team, Yamaha -- the factory team, Yamaha now. And he said the

pressure was off. This is a three-man championship in

terms of who is going to win it. You're riding with the leader now,

Lorenzo. Through Rainey Curve there, fast,

downhill. And this is the right- hander. It's a peculiar corner and

if you get offline it's butchy. Stoner takes the wider line, will

he cut back inside? Le The great thing about

motorcycles is they can get close behind. There are no aerodynamics,

and they can get close in the slip stream but they have to get out of

the corners. They could have DRS on motorbikes.

The leader has to be told to sit upright.

None of that in MotoGP. When the lights go out it's whoever can ride

the fastest and hardest and look after your tyres. How many times

have we seen Cal Crutchlow outclass his teammate, but then get tucked

in behind his teammate and then he can't overtake him. And that's

Dovizoiso. There was definitely a missed apex

from Ben Spies. A lot of people think they sit on these motorbikes,

but they don't, they stand on them. Watch these two, there's nothing in

the performance. I think Ben Spies is in trouble. If he's in pain he

won't be as agile and jumping around to get the bike to turn

through the corners. But still a great race for fourth position.

And these boys are running in the 22s, the lead three are running in

the 21s, still. . They're getting tripped up a bit

here by Ben Spies, who is a little slower in places.

James Ellison having a good ride in 16th. From Colin Edwards down in

18th. I don't know what all that's about.

Interestingly with Collins he said he was perched too high on the bike

so he removed some cushions. And now he feels like he's inside it.

But it's not doing him any good at the moment. We had a wild-card

rider this weekend, but he failed to qualify. Steve Rapp was on the

cards, but he failed to get inside the qualifying time.

It seems he's got the bike exactly where he wants, Jorge Lorenzo and

he's not under immediate threat. Le there's the face hplt.

At the moment he is doing his best in staying in front of Valentino

Rossi. Hayden has put in his fastest lap.

And he's closed in on the battle for fourth place.

Le Rossi really struggled this weekend and hasn't been able to get

the pace. He says he can't get any feel from the front of the Ducati.

Yes, he said when ever I try to push to get speed out of it,

nothing happens. Yes, and they tried lots of

different chassis settings and engine settings. They think they

work ed out an improvement, but then unfortunately Rossi crashed so

the test driver had to twn the next tests.

What has Lorenzo done? He's dropped down to a 21.6.43.

What's happened is he's maintained the pace but Stoner and Pedrosa

have dropped back into the 22s. Oh, My goodness.

That was Pedrosa getting it all crossed up at that point. The

Yamaha looks on rails. And look at the different riding styles. When

you watch Pedrosa he's leaping around and is exciting to watch,

whereas Lorenzo is much smoother. Le oh, Pasini has had all sorts of

troubles all weekend. But he was running at the wrong end of the

field. Through the left-hand and let's

watch this gap. Once again, 21.7. OK, sown Stoner has responded a

little. He's back to 21s. But Jorge has put more than half a second on

them. Yes, I think it's interesting, because I think Stoner can close

the gap down, but can Pedrosa come with him? Stoner has gone for the

softer rear tyre and pedyosia has gone for the harder - Pedrosa has

gone for the harder of the two. And Pedrosa had probably hoped to

get in front at the beginning, and use it to be advantage, because the

softer tyre would get up to Rossi said he'd hope to run with.

He knew he couldn't run with the lead three, and this was the

benchmark, but it's not working for him. No, because Nicky Hayden is

tagging in there. And you can see the gap with Rossi coming round the

final right-hand before turn 11 now. Stefan Bradle has moved up to

MotoGP means it is the first time he's raced here. Yes, he came over

here in May and got a road bike out and joined the track day. I imagine

he scared the living daylights out of everybody! But he came and

learned the track which would help in the first practice session.

I bet Stefan's eyes were on strings the first time.

Well, Jorge Lorenzo just keeping those flat tyres constantly fast

but the laps are coming down all the time. He's just so consistent

that guy. He keeps the tyres in good shape and he's good at nailing

lap after lap, which is difficult when leading a race like that.

He has an onboard timer and that's what a rateser will do in a race

like this, just keep talking to himself.

Lovely to see Wayne here. He was a winner in '89, '9 1 and many others.

His career was cut short after a crash in Italy, but if you look at

the statistics he's the most successful rider of all times in

terms of the number of starts and number of podiums.

It's great to see a lot of the stars here. It's a classic weekend.

Yeah, very much so. Some of the greats from the past come here.

What we saw there was a real bit of head and shoulders between Nicky

Hayden and Stefan Bradle. But Yamaha in particular bring all

the old names out here. I've seen Eddie Lawson, and Kenny Roberts.

And Stevie Baker, one of the great Canadian riders, in fact I'm with

him at Donington Park for the classic meeting there. You have a

terrible life. Don't I just! There's Bill Hayden who runs a

company called Second Chance Arnold's. So if you want a car....

Well, the pain killer must have something this weekend. It was

important for him to demonstrate to Yamaha that although he was

probably getting signals from him that they didn't need him any more,

they still want to hang on to him.There's The boss with the

chequebook. The half-race distance and there is number 46, Valentino

Rossi still circulating. Ellison in 15th. Nicky Hayden has

won here twice don't forget. A great rider and knows this circuit

very well. It's a battle all the way. It's

peculiar the way they just don't seem to be able to get the Ducati

to give the riders good feelings. They've gone from carbon fibre to

aluminium frame. Trying to do everything to give the rider the

confidence to push the bike to the limit. The engine is a lot

different to the others, but they have to work it out to get good

throttle control. It's all about the connection between the throttle

and the rear tyre. Jorge Lorenzo finds the limit when

dropping down the Corkscrew. Two laps in a row we've seen the

Honda tie itself in knots. You would think that with 15 laps

remaining that softer rear tyre would have passed its heyday.

They're trying to say to Lorenzo that you've got the gap and just

try and break it. He's probably now trying to nail

three fast laps to break Stoner. He just fired is over the top there.

He ran in second, which is arguably a too high gear. Casey Stoner would

have seen that, and seen a little bit of blood there and may be just

trying to close the gap down again. As you change direction at that

point the wheels are virtually off the ground.

Watch again, this is where Stoner has been having difficulty. That

looked easier. But the front end of that bike has not looked

comfortable. That's it, though. As you said, he

is now getting excited, Stoner has taken less than half a second out

of it. So that's close. And Pedrosa has had to give best to these two,

he's a couple of seconds down the road now. So it will be a showdown

between the 2010 and 2011 champions. And Casey Stoner has now seen that

Jorge is on the limit. 157 kilograms and 250 break horse power.

They are rockets and trying to keep them on the ground, it's all very

change gear early to keep the front wheel down. This is the point where

it goes really light, and whup, that's where it drops away.

I think the problem Casey Stoner has is simply trying to pass. It's

all very well following someone, but just going offline trying to

pass is where it's going to have to happen and it is about getting a

run out of a corner, but Lorenzo has such good contraction with the

Yamaha it's about the power. You have to be slightly later off the

brakes into the next corner. That was a good lap. He's closed right

up with Lorenzo there. Nice job!

Oh, there's a rider down but I couldn't see who it was.

The rescue guys. Oh, dear me. That's Colin Edwards. Oh, James

Ellison, rather. I'm sorry. James Ellison, he was actually

having a good run at 15th what happened? A locked front. Oh, a

fast crash. A very fast crash. Just as he got

on the brakes, the front end locked up. Back to the Corkscrew and

Stoner is right on the wheel tracks he's got the smell of the exhaust

from the Yamaha there. Will he try and get the run out of this next

right? This is the passing spot. This is where it makes sense. But

this is also where two people crashed this morning in warm-up.

It's slippery as you like. Not close enough. There's nothing in it.

He's trying to get side-by-side and he did a big pass here before.

done it. Can Lorenzo come back or not? That was a popular move.

Oh, another brave move there, that's a blind corner at about 160

miles an hour over the top of the hill. Stoner has the softer tyre.

Has he got the grip? He's got the cahooti Serbs, I can tell you that

for nothing! It looked like Jorge missed a gear

there, because it was too easy. Now we have to see if that rear

tyre of Casey Stoner can hang on in there. There are 11 laps to go.

You're riding with Stoner. Do you know what, I think the anti-

wheeling system kicked in too much and shut the system down.

He's got anti-wheeling systems and traction control. And I think the

front end came up too much and as soon as it does, the engine shuts

down and Stoner was morals gifted the lead.

-- more or less gifted the lead. Another crash. Spies I no, no, no,

that can't happen. Another monster crash. Two in two days. I hope he's

all right. Out of the Corkscrew. Man, he's tried so hard and look at

that bike, the suspension has clasped.

Oh, a horrible crash. Not at all pleasant there. Just on the paint

on the inside. Listen, did his suspension collapse

before that. The rear wheel is jammed up in there as he goes down.

We'll need to see that again. It did look like that. I thought

he'd got on the paint first. It was weird where it took him.

There's the boss. He's seen what we've seen. That was extraordinary.

It looked like the swinging arm was way high. So I don't know. We'll

have another look and I'm sure we'll find out.

Down hill we go through the superfast flowing sweeping corner

then the right-hander. Stoner now knows the optimum line out of it.

And Casey Stoner has to start winning races, he is 37 points back.

This will give him five points back. It's still a big deficit.

And we have lapped bikes now here, because it's such a short circuit

here. These guys are a full four seconds or three seconds a lap

quicker than the boys they've just lapped. Nine laps left. You have to

say at the moment Stoner is the fastest. Whether or not Jorge

Lorenzo is just going to bide his time and stay in touch and see what

he can do on the final lap? many times have we seen that man do

well in CRT. Espargaro has been giving a lot of

pressure to his teammate. He's tenth on the road. Good stuff.

on the ART, a brilliant racing team you can purchase these for 1.2

place at the moment. Here's Bradle and Hayden. Bradle on

a Honda and Hayden on the Ducati. Bradle is sixth, Hayden is seventh.

How often have we seen these two sychronised. It's almost like a

demonstration. They're so close. Who ever gets to turn one first out

of the pair of them they seem to stay that way in the race. There

are slightly different riding styles, though.

Britain's Cal Crutchlow from Coventry and now living on the Isle

of Man. Lele tl would be nice to see that

incident again. We may not find out before the end of the race because

I don't think they'll get the bike last year and currently just having

a horrible year down in tenth place at the moment and he won't get any

more points today. That looks like Nicky Hayden could

finish in the top six, that would be no mean feat at all. And I tell

you what, this is such Ducati country they just love them here.

There's a Ducati island here in the middle of the circuit. They just

love them. It's the Honda we ride with.

There's the lead. A slide from Casey Stoner, but he has lots of

weather here! Oh, terrible. 24 degrees.

I'd love it here, if I had a job you could work in the morning and

sun bathe in the afternoon? This will be on your head stone "if I

had a job!" Stoner is on the high-consumption

tyre. Absolutely and he will be trying to preserve as much grip as

he can, but he has less than a second advantage over Lorenzo.

Every time he comes out of there he twitches on the bumps at the top of

the hill. The Yamaha doesn't seem to. It looks happier. But Casey has

not been happy with the chassis on the Honda this year. They've tried

to work it out and he says it's not the bike he had last year and the

reason is Bridgestone changed the tyres. Look at him slithering and

sliding through there. It's not riding, it's crisis management. I

reckon Lorenzo is coming back. The attitude says "return to the front"

0.718 last time round so it has actually stretched a francs out.

He's very much quicker through the bottom section of the circuit. And

bear in mind Lorenzo stole pole last time out.

That's a beautiful colour and movement shot. It's like being on a

big dipper! Over the top they get flung out of

the seat. From that parade of bikes you saw Spies is out, Ellison is

into the track. This is Stoner looking concerned --

Mrs Stoner looking concerned. They are probably over here for a

holiday, so it would be nice if her man won.

Last time round it was.741. It's now 1.1 so he has the hammer down.

Jorge Lorenzo, if he hasn't got anything left he will be more than

happy to finish second. He gets 20 points for that. Pedrosa will get

16 for third. But most important, Stoner will get the maximum bag

with 25 points but he will still be at a disadvantage of 32 points for

the championship. And that's really interesting.

Head rose is on a circuit that I think doesn't really suit him

because he's such a small guy. hasn't got the lovage for the

hanging on there. Nice job, top six for Nicky Hayden.

Now, Cal Crutchlow what can he do about that teammate? It is terrific

formation riding from these two, Cal is the least experience. It's

only his second time here. Yeah, but it is such a really tricky

track. It's more different from the average sickity that just about

anywhere else we go. Crutchlow and Dovizoiso.

Crutchlow has the magnets on and he's groping around and get back in

line but Dovizoiso is, Crutchlow trying to get side-by-side and

can't quite carry the speed. We saw this, if you remember, before Cal

went off at the Sachsenring, Dovizoiso just leaves it to the

last point and then manages to get a lot of power break. This is where

it kills him because this is a classic overtake spot but that's

where Dovizoiso is ungetable, if you like. Oh, my goodness me.

Valentino Rossi, the man who has finished in the points every time

this year, but not today. He's looking for his bike! His airbag

has fully expanded there. And Rossi is looking around. That was going

into the Corkscrew. Oh, he crashed before that. Look at that. Oh, my

goodness me. Another couple of hundred grands' worth of damage

there. Happily, Valentino is walking away interest that. He had

such a big crash in practice they had the flags out for about 45

minutes because he blew a hole in the safety walls.

Two laps remaining. It looks like Stoner. But he's

crashed from here before now. Lorenzo has obviously decided "I'm

going to button it off now." He hasn't lost his way but he's just

decided he has a huge buffer he is let Stoner get away with it, and

he'll only lose five points. Stoner is always on the inside part

of the curve there. And there never is the same amount of grip. He is

such a master at nicking a little bit of paint on the inside and

making the corner wider. He has this lovely gap now he can cruise

this last lap. This time last year, Stoner

qualified second and beat Lorenzo and who came third? Pedrosa.

the pass took place at exactly the same place on the track.

Down luing Rainey Curve for the last time. -- through.

The last corner, the last turn. that's the tyre he qualified on,

what an event. Head down, observe are the shoulder. Yeah, you've got

it. Casey stoner, he might have been cross about qualifying, but

he's smoked them here in California. Lorenzo, a smart ride for him. He

knew when he had to let it go. And Pedrosa in third place, and come on

Cal, can't quite do it. A great race from the pair of them. Good

guys, fourth and fifth. And Nicky Hayden, in the top six for the

local boy on a Ducati. Bradle just came in second place. I

can't believe Valentino had that crash. He's crashing more than he

used to which shows how committed he is. Le Valentino Rossi's crash

was on the brakes before he got to the kark screw. Yeah, and the bike

also is light when you start that braking. You're up over the crystal

hill. A burst of emotion from the boss of Honda. They're doing such a

fantastic job here. And Aleix Espargaro finishes ninth outright.

A few Aussies in the crowd here and that is a very, very good job here.

He was on the same lap, that's good going. That is astonishing that

that tyre held out. He was actually saying, Jorge, that I don't really

like the hard tyre I prefer the soft and Stoner was saying the

reverse. But they've changed their mind.

Wayne Rainy lives two miles from the track. He's a dab hand at

supercar b racing. Pedrosa, a useful ride. He's still second in

the world. And the points are closed down from Casey Stoner's

point of view. And the top speed less than 270ks. That's 170 miles

an hour. Yes, that's on the blind crest of a

hill. Yes, with a qualifying tyre that he made last the laps. I

really, really am desperate for you -, ah, look, he's giving his

teammate a ride home. Rossi gets a ride home while they

dig is bike out of the bunker. Jorge really flew the flag for

Yamaha and it's exactly as last year. 37 wins now for Casey Stoner.

How many more before the end of the year? I can't believe he's going to

retire. He says he's not having fun!

And he's only 26 years old. amazing record. Look at Valentino

and the state of his shoulder. Nice one from Nicky Hayden. They're

desperate to support him. Yeah, well, he's a smart man this guy. An

intellectual man and he scored 20 points. How do you know? Because I

know other intellectual people! Well, it keeps it all interesting

it tilts the tables in Honda's favour. There are a lot of Honda

supporters here. There's a whole field there that leapt to their

feet. And there's the baby, give her a kiss. Yesterday, he was

spitting blood about the qualifying. Now he's happy. Is he OK? Body

language, please? Body is OK, but he will be disappointed crashing

out in tenth position. I reckon that was 125 miles an hour that he

hit the ground. That's extraordinary locking up the front

going into a corner like that. Most peculiar. But it is light there.

does go light there and he says he has to feel. And that really is a

nasty crash. The bike was barely lent observer. The problem for

Rossi in a crash like that, but that's a confidence knocker, that

crash. If you lock the front up going into a corner you're never

too sure what you have grit-wise on a corner and it will take him a

long while to get observer that. Yes, he will be scratching his head

over that. Now, what happens with this one? Yeah, I think you're

right. Casey Stoner, congratulations on

the win. Were you waiting for the moment tactically to pass Lorenzo?

We were waiting for it one of the option, and I had to be gentle on

the gas and make it last. I wanted to get to the front immediately to

see if we could pull the gap. Jorge was riding strong, fast lines and

if you get offline here it's slippery so I decided to drop back

and take a few laps on my tyres and ease them down, they were getting a

bit warmment and after that I picked slowly back up into the

rhythm and hunting yrg yorg down from then on and tried to find a

way past. We're very, very happy. - - Jorge. We decided to run a

different strategy to everyone else today and it was another great one.

Well done. Thank you. And that, my friends, likes as

though that is what is going on. They're cooling down the tyres

there's so much to it. If the tyre has the grit then you're happy with

it. It's no good having a hard tyre with no grip at the start.

Jorge Lorenzo was really, really competitive on the hard tyre at the

end. So I guess it surprised him seeing Stoner pass.

Jorge, did you think you had that one in the bag. Yeah, I tried my

best at the beginning and I did it, but I made a mistake on the skork

screw and -- Corkscrew and Casey was a big motivation because he got

me on one lap, half a second and after that I couldn't keep the pace

I was doing at the beginning. Maybe the soft tyre in this race was the
