We're past the half way mark

in the regular season

and what a half we've had so far.

It started at 100 miles an hour.

The speed of hurricane Irma,

the NFL lashed by the president.

And sometimes in a storm you have

to stay low, stay strong.

The theme of a painful

struggle persists.

Stars of the show hobbling away.

Old hands that know full well it

comes with the territory.

The rookie loving the bright lights.

COMMENTATOR: Watson.

Other themes, more uplifting,

teams not given a chance,

shouting their defiance.

Love you, guys.

Love where we're going.

New faces lighting up this season,

outsiders on the rise,

the fancied fading, when Giants fall

they come down hard.

Sometimes between the extremes

business as usual.

The hard-headed and the well

tested in their groove.

Now, as they always have

been, in contention.

And around the core of steel swirl

the changes and adjustments

and trades and sackings.

All that will sweep football

into the second half

of the regular season.

The rushing yards and the passing

yards, and the unflinching courage

of an entire brotherhood

of pro footballers.

Oh!

Loving each other.

How many people want

to eat a W tonight?

And knocking lumps

out of each other.

All together and all trying

to tear each other apart.

So to lead us into the second half

of the season it's the battered

and bruised Washington Redskins.

Plagued by injuries,

the three time Super Bowl winners

head to Seattle to face

an unforgiving Seahawks.

On a four game win streak,

Russell Wilson's men put 41 points

past Houston last week in one

of the games of the season.

COMMENTARY: Blitz.

Wagner for two.

When Seattle has you in

a disadvantageous position,

they like coming after you.

They've got them backed up

and they sent everyone at Cousins.

It became a game of cat and mouse.

And so, Wagner with the safety.

Of course after that the Redskins

will free kick it from the 20.

They do just that.

Lockett is taken down at 30.

Pretty good coverage by Washington.

Blair Walsh has had a good year,

the former Viking, 12 of 13.

This is a 44 yarder.

And it's no good.

So, a second miss of the year,

and that one wasn't even close.

He does a tremendous job.

And with a bunch of guys

who were just getting

to know each other, working

against the Seattle Seahawks,

defense in the league.

They've got to hurry-up

and spike it, though,

no time-outs, eight seconds,

got to get to the line.

Wilson will spike it

with three seconds left.

Saved enough time to give

Walsh another attempt.

He has missed from 39,

this would be a 49 yarder,

tying the season long if he gets it.

Snap and hold are good,

the kick is crooked,

and it is wide left again.

Three times in a row,

all wide left, unbelievable.

It's been a nightmare

first half for Walsh,

and it stays seven and two Redskins

at the break.

The pass rushes, the coverage,

our defense was outstanding,

the coach did a great job.

Offensively we just spluttered,

we couldn't really run a ball.

We couldn't really protect.

Didn't do a lot of things.

But when it counted,

when they took the lead,

Kirk had two outstanding passes.

The guys made plays.

Just very proud

of all of those guys.

It's really important that we find

a way back and play good football.

That was bad.

A bad day for us.

And I totally feel

responsible for that.

I don't see anything

other than that.

It's not just on Blair or anything

else, you know, it's on all of us.

It starts with me and going down

the line, let's find

a way to be better.

The resiliency and the grit of this

team is a reflection

of the whole organisation.

It's the kind of thing you can build

on and do something with,

not just in one season or one part

of the season, but hopefully

for years to come.

You need wins like this to solidify

that kind of reputation.

It was a really, really

tense game, wasn't it?

As low scoring ones

often seem to be.

Yes, it was, twists and turns,

and absolutely, what do

you all call it, cracker?

you through the sort of story

of the game, really.

You've just pointed out,

before we did this, you thought

Blair Walsh had his hair cut

like a Premier League footballer.

Man, those guys have

the freshest haircuts.

I mean, I like it.

Shame he didn't kick

like a Premier League footballer,

that would be the argument here.

But he had an absolute

shocker, didn't he, really?

If he had landed these field goals

in the first half it probably

would have been a very different

game, three missed

in the first half.

Absolutely.

And, you know, Seattle is always

built on playing defense.

They don't have their running game

going, so they have to make

all the points they can

in the kicking game.

This is detrimental

to their success.

Detrimental?

That's what's up.

You've been in England a long time.

I'm learning.

When you see these constantly

being missed, and there

is the Seattle owner and the general

manager, as well, it just,

it deflates a team, doesn't it?

No question about it.

Like Jason said, this

is a team built on defense,

they are not going to score a lot

of point anyway.

So all of these field goals count.

He's missing field goals

in a tight game like this,

it cost them in the end.

Is it the kind of thing

he will get cut for?

Yeah, you know what?

They don't have a lot of time

and patience with kickers.

So, if there's somebody out

there in the market,

believe me, he's in,

getting worked out.

The other thing with Blair Walsh,

of course, a couple of years ago

when he was at the Vikings,

he missed a crucial

kick in a playoff game

against the Seahawks.

How do you remember this?

LAUGHTER.

Strictly speaking,

it's all our jobs to

remember stuff like that.

Now it's your job to talk me

through the Washington defense.

They have got injuries,

haven't they, and yet they control

Russell Wilson

perfectly in this game.

Yeah, you know, you've got

to give it to the coaching,

and the depth they have

in their team.

So, when they picked this

roster in the offseason,

they really picked guys they knew

could fit into this scheme.

Because they are plugging guys in,

and they are making plays.

Now, what I'm led to believe

they did correctly, and I'm only

doing this because I'm on this side,

but you can talk through it,

is they didn't want Russell Wilson

to move anywhere, really come out

of those two lines.

Which is his strength.

Isn't it?

If he runs around.

Exactly, once he gets outside

of the pocket, that's

where Russell Wilson hurts you.

And you see the pressure

these teams are bringing.

They are keeping him in the pocket,

making him uncomfortable.

If you watch his footwork

he's not comfortable,

he keeps moving around,

and he is making them

make a lot of mistakes.

Shall I do it again?

One more time.

All right.

That's cool.

What, I mean, is the key to that

getting to him quickly, then?

The pace of the D line

and the linebackers?

What has to happen is the defensive

ends have to keep him contained.

They can't let him break outside.

When the pressure comes

they forced him to step up

and inside the pocket,

and that makes him

make the mistakes.

I suppose the question is why

haven't more teams tried to do this?

Because it's not that easy.

You have to be very disciplined

in your rush lanes.

And it's because he can create

when he gets outside that pocket.

He sees the field differently

than when he does when he is stuck

in there with pressure on his feet.

Is it more impressive

because I mean,

they've had a lot of injuries,

haven't they, this year?

Both offensively and defensively.

A lot of injuries.

But they keep plugging away.

They don't have a premier pass rush

outside of Kerrigan on that team.

And they were still able to give

Russell Wilson inside the bucket

and contain him and harass him

and harassing the entire game.

We spoke about injuries just there.

As I say, they've had them

offensively, as well.

He's got to throw to new receivers,

compared to the last season,

Kurt Cousins, doesn't have

Jackson any more, hasn't

got Garcon any more.

And he's making plays.

This was the knock on him, right.

Could he make the big

throws in a game where

he had to win the game?

And that's what he's

proving right now.

This guy's making himself a tonne

of money right now, by the way.

You could play anybody

in there and he could run

the offensive well enough

for you to play and win.

No question that you can see

what this guy is doing right now.

He is doing what the elite

quarterbacks in the NFL do.

He is making the other receivers,

who aren't household names,

good football players.

And you see this mistake right here,

that just happened?

Yes.

We need to highlight that.

Yes.

Because it's...

Yeah, yeah, go back

Because this is a rookie mistake.

This guy's a rookie corner...

You mean what this guy is doing

or me trying to work the screen?

No, no, we are talking

about the corner.

But he didn't take him down.

So he would have scored

if the safety wasn't

alert to hit him again.

And that was a rookie mistake.

In college you don't

have to do that.

Having done with all of those big

plays, they go over like this.

here, and I appreciate you.

That's good, that's good teamwork.

You talk about Cousins

are earning a tonne of money.

You can see what it means to him.

It was a proper performance by him.

Particularly in a week

where he must have been thinking,

I've just lost my chance to go

to the San Francisco 49ers.

LAUGHTER.

I know the 49ers are

awful this season,

but all the talk this season

was about what's he going to go to

the 49ers at the end of this season?

Now he has teams like

the Jacksonville Jaguars,

who have the defense,

plug him in, I mean,

they are Super Bowl

contenders, legitimately.

There will be teams lining

up outside the door

for this quarterback.

He's an outstanding player.

The talk of him going to San

Francisco was because of Shanahan,

and he knows the system,

and he knows him pretty well,

and it would have been a perfect,

seamless fit for the 49ers,

but the competition for this man

is going to be ridiculous.

There's a really interesting

stat about the Rams.

They've got a fantastic

road record of 4-0,

they've travelled over 12,000

miles so far.

You can see it on the

screen at the moment.

By the end of the season they'll

have travelled nearly 32

and a half thousand miles,

Pittsburgh Steelers

will have the least

in the NFL, just shy of 7000.

That 32,000 miles.

That's remarkable, isn't it?

That is a tremendous

amount of travelling.

For this team to have

kept it together.

This young team, to have kept it

together so far, I mean,

I'm really impressed with the Head

Coach.

It's because they are

young, like you said.

Also, they must be

used to travelling.

A lot of them will have moved to LA,

they don't have a training center

as such at the moment.

They are training at the University

but their new camp is being built.

So I suppose a lot of them are used

to being moved around.

And that's what I think

that the advantage comes from.

They are used to being on the road.

They are used to, kind of,

just being together and figuring it

out as they move on.

They don't have to be

in one set area.

It has to be because they are young.

We were just talking about this

the other day, like,

you get off a plane after a six-hour

flight, your legs feel so heavy.

That's the truth.

Oh my god.

So how they keep going out

there and winning after travelling

all of these miles, it's remarkable.

And you two turn left on the plane,

as well, the rest of us turn right.

I'm trying to figure out why

he sounds like him, man, it's crazy.

John Gruden was a young,

successful coach.

Maybe he watched the film.

That's what I would have did.

Just to talk about the Eagles,

as well, we'll be talking a lot

about the Eagles a lot between now

and the end of the season.

Every great quarterback

needs a go to receiver,

and Carson Wentz has that

at the moment with Alshon Jeffery.

Absolutely.

And you want a guy you can trust.

Meaning you want to be able to throw

the ball out there and him to go

compete for it and to come

down with it.

And you see on this play,

this is a great pass design.

You throw it up to a big target.

This is a big receiver.

So he has a wide range to catch

the ball, which is very effective

down in the red zone.

And when you're talking about a guy

like Alshon Jeffery,

who with the Chicago Bears

was an absolutely outstanding

receiver, fell off a little bit,

came to the Philadelphia Eagles

on a one-year contract,

and he's playing outstanding, man,

they are going to keep him

there for a very long time.

He has all the skills.

Good range, like Jason

said, has good hands,

he's a great football player.

Does the one-year contract have

something to do with it,

in the sense that he is playing

for his future?

You could say that.

Oh, it does!

All right, but I mean

he balled before, so it's not

like all of a sudden he has shown up

and now he is a baller,

he balled in Chicago.

I've never been in a situation

to get that kind of money, you have,

you know you are balling right now.

Our second game comes

from the five-time Super Bowl

winning Dallas Cowboys.

Entering the week at 4-3 in the NFC

East, the Cowboys need

to keep on winning if they've any

chance of staying in touch

with the high-flying Philadelphia

Eagles.

Visting AT&T stadium

were Kansas City, who started

the season in spectacular

fashion at 5-0.

With 1 win in their past three games

the Chiefs also needed a win

to maintain their advantage

in the AFC West.

For a time the Chiefs

rose above the rest.

A streak led by the fast arm

of Alex Smith and the fast legs

of Kareem Hunt and Tyreek Hill.

Touchdown!

Kansas City!

Then two defeats.

Man the pumps, you Chiefs, there's

a mean hombre coming your way.

Ezekiel Elliott, while he can,

until his ban, at full tilt.

This is no comfort zone for Chiefs.

You're in Cowboy country.

2nd & 15.

What a turnaround move by Williams.

Terrence Williams with the big gain.

Already with three catches for 43,

setting up the Cowboys 1st & goal,

over the top they go and it's

caught by Beasley.

they had at half-time.

Just to come back for

the second half and

continue doing the good things

we were doing in the first.

That was important.

We were not able to sustain early

and keep our defence

off the field whatsoever

in the first half.

And my hat goes off to Dallas

and the job that they did.

Now we've got to go back and figure

some things out here.

And do a better job.

And I wonder whether it is his

defence that he is going to

have to figure out.

Because there are some

interesting stats when you

look at the Kansas City Chiefs.

And that is if you just

go back a couple

of years ago...

Defence, seventh ranked in the NFL.

And their offence

was way down at 27.

You can see in the last

couple of seasons, the way

that has changed.

The offence third-ranked now.

But the defence, way down at 30.

And they're doing a terrible job

of stopping the run.

And there's all kinds

of components to that.

But one that I look at is always

the defensive backs, and that

is Eric Berry not being in there.

He was such a good

defender that they

could disguise and use certain ways.

And you know, his injury

is starting to come up.

You could never underscore

the importance of a guy

like Eric Berry in a football team.

I mean, this was the heart

and soul of that defence.

And besides that, even though

Justin Houston, the

outstanding defensive man for

the team, is still getting pressure.

Tamba Hali who was another

outstanding football player, just

not coming off the injury.

There are a lot of

guys who just aren't

creating the pressure.

So even one player

on the defence can cost a

whole system, really?

No question about that.

Because of the way they use

Eric Berry, they use him in

coverage and in run support.

And you see them

struggling in both areas

right now.

Let's talk about the Cowboys.

And Elliott's ban and appeal

continues to go round and

round and round.

And he is appealing again.

If he is eventually

banned, Prescott...

Or suspended for six games,

to look at other weapons to help

Dallas go forward in this season.

and look at Bryant.

everybody needs that slot receiver

that can run what we

call option routs.

In and out routs, under five yards.

And it's a specialty position.

And he's good at that.

And you're going to

have to use him more

because you're going to have to get

those short yard throws that

supplement a run.

another option rout outside.

These are things you can do that

supplement your run game.

And obviously when you talk

about Dez Bryant, who was one of the

best receivers in football

for the last couple of years,

doesn't quite have the numbers this

year as he has

in years prior.

But he is a big physical

receiver, goes across the

middle of the field.

He's also an emotional leader

of the football team.

And also in regards to the running

back, Elliott, he is going

to hurt them, no question.

This guy is a special player.

But that offensive line

for the Dallas Cowboys is

finally starting to play

the way they used to.

And they're going to put

a running back back there and

they're going to be OK

running the football.

They've still got to play

the Eagles twice, the Cowboys.

They've also got the Falcons,

they've got the Redskins, they've

got the Raiders.

They've got the Seahawks.

Is a play-off spot, given how

dominant the Eagles are, the

best that the Cowboys can hope for?

Yes because they can lose

to the Eagles twice.

The Eagles can stop...

They're going to force

Dak Prescott to beat them.

Because they're going

to stop the run.

Yeah, there's a lot of teams

in their that they can lose

to.

That's a really difficult schedule

for the Dallas Cowboys.

They are young football

team, playing well.

But that is a tricky schedule.

game to cover that up.

I mean, he is inconsistent,

but he actually did well in this

Cincinnati said they

were going to go at him.

But he did enough.

And I think his confidence is up.

You know, he doesn't have to win

in games like he used to,

throwing the ball.

So I think he is seeing

the field a little

differently.

He has calmed down, he understands

what he needs to do to

win.

And he is just being more effective.

And I think that has come

with the change in the offence and

him just becoming more comfortable.

Yes, they know right

now Blake Bortles isn't

going to be the Tom Brady.

He is not going to do that.

So they've got to run the football,

play great defence, have him make

safe throws.

And he is doing that well.

He is more of a game

manager this year than what

they asked him to do previously.

some opportunities.

I thought we did some

really good things.

I thought we showed

what we could potentially become.

And I thought some guys gave

some great individual

efforts.

One thing that stuck with me

was when the Panthers are

emotionless.

That's when we...

Good things don't happen.

So, whether you've got

to fake it, whether

you've got to do whatever you've got

to do, if we can get the Bank of

America Stadium with a pulse that's

when we are at our best.

That's all I was trying to do.

Doesn't matter when you get

your points or how you

get your points,

you've got to get them.

We haven't been very good

situationally, or as good as we've

needed to be situationally.

They dress differently,

those two quarterbacks, don't they?

They do.

I thought Cam was

looking good there,

actually.

If you'd have got

hold of Matt Ryan, as

we were going in.

said to him, what on

earth are you doing with your

offense this season?

Yes, I would have

needed some insight.

I'm sympathetic because I know it

takes about a year for them to kind

of grasp the offense.

But you can't blame the drops

and the missed throws

on no grasp with the offense.

I mean, they had opportunities

and they didn't make them.

Individual errors?

Individual errors and collectively,

as a team, that Super

Bowl hangover is real.

I'm telling you, man.

Things like this happen to teams.

Once you go into a Super Bowl,

you don't win it, the next

season you just,

kind of, fall apart.

I didn't think this would happen

to the Atlanta Falcons.

I thought their leadership

was a lot stronger.

But they are not firing

on all cylinders at all.
