Hello and welcome to NFL This Week

in a week when many of us took time

out to enjoy the Christmas holidays.

Bill Belichick had a message

to anyone thinking of

taking some time off.

No days off!

No days off!

Speaking of somebody

who's not here today!

He's clearly all about

the business, Belichick.

Joining me to work through the pick

of the action, two men

who are strictly business.

Two-time Super Bowl

winner, Osi Umenyiora.

And alongside him, the former NFL

cornerback, Jason Bell.

Now, then.

Let's start by looking

at the playoff picture.

Coming into Week 15,

with just two rounds to go.

In the AFC, New England

and Pittsburgh rule the roost.

Jacksonville had an outside chance

of securing that valuable by-week

that comes with finishing as one

of the two top seeds.

Their divisional rivals, Tennessee,

needed a win to keep

up their playoff hopes and prevent

the Jaguars from

winning the AFC South.

Behind them, Kansas City

have a chance to put

their mid-season woes behind them

and secure the AFC West

and a playoff spot.

Buffalo held a wildcard spot coming

into the week but had a tough

game against England.

Other teams no doubt sensing

an opportunity, there.

Over in the NFC, a win

for Philadelphia would secure

them the number one seed

and a home-field advantage.

Behind them, the Rams already

had playoff football

locked out but with a win

they could collect their first

divisional title in 14 years.

The NFC South still had three teams

in the playoff picture.

A victory for Atlanta over

New Orleans could clinch

their playoff spot and end any hopes

for the three remaining

teams in the mix.

What a turnaround this season

has been for Carolina.

Bottom of the NFC South

last time around.

They have looked a different

beast this year.

A win over divisional rivals

Tampa Bay would secure them a place

in the playoffs and a chance to bury

the demons of Super Bowl 50.

To get within touching distance.

To be there and to fail on the day.

To take a tumble in the season

after the oh-so-close.

Tumble to rock bottom.

And to recover, to rise again

and to reach the moment again.

The place.

You have to keep pounding!

The gateway to the postseason.

Hammering on the door.

Coming through.

The Panthers.

The Panthers last week,

This was almost

disastrous for Carolina.

His body is just so big, he ploughs

straight through his offensive line.

And that will clinch

a spot in the post season

for the Carolina Panthers.

Winston is fired up!

Winston sacked for the sixth time.

This is what he is upset about.

He is claiming that he has the ball

but they had already awarded

possession to Carolina.

Such an emotional guy and he had

a terrific game once again.

I understand his frustration.

I'm just proud of this

team's resilience.

Yeah.

I am proud of this

team's resilience.

They just threw everything.

It was trying for us today.

Tampa is a great team.

I fumbled but I recovered.

It was like, I recovered it.

It's OK.

It's not OK but everyone has bad

things happen to them.

And things you can't control.

Some things we can control.

But it's over with, now.

We have got one more game at home.

We have got to get a win,

we're focused on that.

I kind of figure to...

CHILD LAUGHS.

That's not funny.

I kind of found that it is going

to be coming down to the last...

And I wanted to put my team

in the best situation

to win football games.

It is not necessarily about

individual accolades or statistics.

Especially when trying

to win a football game.

I was happy that the guys honed

in and locked in to get

a much-needed win for us.

It's a high bar, fellows,

but I think that might

be my favourite Cam Newton

press conference ever.

That had to be the best

one I've seen.

Usually he is speaking

complete nonsense!

I think the baby, the kid just

expressed what we all feel

when he's up there talking.

Wow!

It doesn't mask or do too much

to mask their troubles

in the air at the moment.

Whatever he's doing on the ground,

140 passing yards in that game.

Are they going to regret

stealing Kelvin Benjamin

early on in the season?

I don't think so.

Ultimately, you don't want him to be

throwing a tonne of passes.

It is based upon the run game.

And his ability to run.

He needs to make a couple of plays

down the field but I think they knew

to get rid of Benjamin

because they had two big body

receivers, they didn't need that.

They needed a speed separation guy

and I think it was a good trade.

There's no possible way they can

continue to win with this

guy throwing 440 yards.

Calvin Benjamin may not have been

one of the most dynamic

players in the NFL but he's

a big body receiver.

Cam Newton, we know he likes

to throw the ball high.

And he's the guy who can go

up and get it for him.

They definitely need

that guy with them.

They are not going to go anywhere

with the guy throwing 440 yards.

Particularly at this stage

of proceedings as well.

The Head Coach said the special

teams are often the unsung heroes.

They saved us!

That is not what he was to be saying

at this stage of proceedings.

Your special teams have to win

at least two games a year for you.

You need that, that is why

the guys are important.

Especially, as you see

in this kick-off return,

this play changed the game for them

and you need this, you need

an explosive player

and because they got rid

of Benjamin, he's playing more.

Though he got hurt.

But anyway, this is the kind of

stuff you get from a guy like him.

You need special guys on special

teams to make special place.

You have to take your eye off

the ball and look at the help

he got from his friends.

Down the field.

A great touchdown but he

is injured, of course.

Which adds extra pressure

on that passing offense.

Are they hopefully relying

on the fact that when you have

a quarterback like Cam Newton,

who is so capable on the ground,

when they get to the playoffs,

he can compensate for the lack

of weapons around them in terms

of receiving anything?

If that is what they are relying

on then they are in even bigger

trouble than we initially thought.

Because we have seen

the Carolina Panthers try this exact

same blueprint before and they ran

into a team with the Denver Broncos

who were completely prepared

for the run and they shut down

a passing attack.

So now they're trying to do

the exact same thing

this particular year.

They are not even going

to make it past the first

round of the playoffs,

let alone get to the Super Bowl.

McCaffrey has done

a lot for that team.

He is catching a tremendous amount

of passes at the backfield.

I like the way he is running

the ball because with Cam Newton

back there, you have got a big guy

and a small guy in the backfield.

I think they'll be all right.

Greg Olsen also needs to play well.

Relying on McCaffrey more on special

teams, too, I'm guessing.

Let's look at Cam Newton's

counterpart, Winston.

The franchise quarterback,

supposedly for the

Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

A very disappointing season

for him and for the team,

given that a lot of people had high

hopes for them this season.

I was one of those people

who had high hopes!

And I think everyone who watched

them on Hard Knocks thought this

was going to be the team that

ascends this year but they have been

flat-out disappointing.

They haven't been able

to get anything going.

They were just talking

earlier about Jackson.

One of the most explosive wide

receivers in football.

Is this guy injured?

Where has he been?

He just completely disappeared.

Mike Kevin is alongside him...

I do not understand

what is going on there.

You can see by some of his antics

and the things he is doing,

we talk about this all the time...

You don't want to see your

quarterback do those kind of things

and that is telling a tale of things

that maybe are going

on in the locker room and the fact

that he cannot get to Jackson

with the ball.

I don't know what is

happening at all.

At least he is keeping

his cool, right?

for the Falcons as they headed

to New Orleans and Drew Brees

Atlanta produced a late flurry.

Coleman's touchdown in the fourth

quarter wasn't enough.

New Orleans want to stay on top

of the NFC South and Atlanta must

beat Carolina next week to get

into the playoffs.

This was a win or bust match

between Dallas and Seattle.

No playoffs...

in the third quarter.

He enjoyed that one!

It hurts my heart.

It seems to happen quite often!

The Seahawks staying

alive for the final week

of the regular season.

Unlike the Detroit Lions.

They took on the Cincinnati Bengals,

they wanted to keep their playoff

hopes alive and that was a tight

game, no doubt about that.

Going into the fourth quarter...

Green broke this up and Bernard

crushing the Lions' hopes as he ran

in to win it for Cincinnati.

And that is the end of the Lions.

Cincinnati are going to be

all right next year.

I'm sick about this

because we've been praising

everybody, about his play

Ultimately, you see him

making a run play here.

Supposed to be in that hole.

What he's done well he's great

versus the running pass.

Most safeties are good at either or.

He's coming up with big plays,

ultimately you think this guy,

there's an argument for defensive

MVP.

Doesn't make the pro bowl?

As you see, I'm very

emotional about this.

Realistically you should be

because that man has been balling

this year.

For him not to be in the pro bowl

is a travesty, it's a

mockery, it's a trave-sham-mockery!

I'm glad you said that,

because you played

under the head coach.

Mike Zimmer.

Said, this kid is instinctive,

tough, physical, there

are so many adjectives

you could say about him.

I wanted a few more

and you delivered on that.

seal the deal.

The LA Rams going from four

and 12 last season to a

team entering the week with ten wins

and only four losses has been pretty

much the story of the season.

Only their second year

back in LA with a

makeshift training

facility, a stadium,

and rookie head coach,

not

many predicted this

year's meteoric rise.

A win against Tennessee and the Rams

are not only securing a

place in the playoffs, but winning

the NFC West for the first time

since 2003.

For Tennessee a win was required

to prevent Jacksonville

from securing the AFC

South and to keep them

in the playoff hunt.

A takeaway from Cory Littleton,

starting at linebacker today for the

Not really sure what he's

CHEERING I think I like

the Rams even more

now they are channelling Ric Flair.

They have an outstanding

running game,

outstanding defense,

not sold on their

quarterback to call them

most dangerous side

in the NFL right now.

Incredibly close and have to be

in the reckoning with a player like

Todd Gurley.

What a comeback season he's had

when you consider where he

was this time last year.

The best 19 touchdowns more

than 2000 yards from

scrimmage.

They are using him so right.

This was brilliant play calling,

they threw the screen into

the oncoming blitz and

they did this all day.

I mean, Todd Gurley looks

like the old LaDainian Tomlinson.

Used to flex him out,

screen him, getting

the ball, when he had

the

ball and space he was so dynamic.

That's what you see out of him.

And what makes him

so dangerous, as you

see now, is a breakaway speed.

Can you outrun the defense?

That's what he's doing well.

I mean, right here you see

this, he's making things

happen on his own, he's

nimble, he's strong.

The thing about him is he's making

everybody play better because

ultimately they're throwing the best

passers they have out of play

action, so him being able to run

like that is opening everything else

up.

Protecting Jared Goff a bit,

who's definitely had a great year,

year on year, when we wrote him off,

many of us did, after his rookie

year.

Jeff Fisher is taking a lot

of credit for this round's research.

Former head coach.

He's stepped up, looking

for a gig, I think, being

quite conspicuous in the media.

How much credit should

Jeff Fisher get

for this?

Everybody loves a win, right?

Everybody wants to put their grubby

little fingers into a winner.

I'm not going to say

he deserves no credit

but obviously he might

have

something to do with

the picking of these players.

The general manager is the one

responsible for picking

players.

This man had those players

on his team last year, did

absolutely nothing with them.

You seen what this young 19-year-old

head coach is doing with them right

now.

He's just had his birthday.

For Jeff Fisher to be

saying, you know,

he has something to do

with this, he needs to go sit

down somewhere, man.

What I like about the 19-year-old

coach, Phil McVeigh, is how he

brought Wade Phillips,

a wily old veteran,

to cancel the balance.

The youthful exuberance.

It's a great tag team, isn't it?

Absolutely, the one thing

hard about being a head

coach is all the administrative

stuff you have to deal with.

You just want to coach

football but you

have to handle so many other things.

Now you have a veteran guy you can

say, how did you handle this?

How do I approach that?

Who is also a great

defensive coordinator?

Great call by him, that

made, really made that

team.

He's been head coach before

for a number of years in the NFL.

He was a pretty good head coach

even though he got fired at Dallas.

Outstanding man, outstanding coach,

everything's going right for them.

Well said.

Speaking of the Tennessee Titans

next opponents, Jacksonville,

they had the field in San Francisco

as AFC South champions for the first

time in their history.

Having last won a divisional

title way back in

1999 before Sean McVay was born.

In the AFC Central.

The top performing defensive

team in the NFL have

bulldozed opponents on their journey

to the playoffs and with momentum

key going into post-season,

they look likely to be

challenged by San Francisco,

on a three-game winning

Such are the systems,

so essential is the

coordinated team effort,

so complex the moves on many fronts,

that this is all beyond the measure

of one

man.

This is a team sport.

But one man, what a

difference one man can

make.

Jimmy Garoppolo, he crossed

the states from New England to San

Francisco and the 49ers

are transformed.

But beware, he's up

against a defense that hunts as a

pack, a team against the one-man

who's made a difference.

Garoppolo has not lost

yet as a starter.

We have yet to see a bad

day for Jimmy Duke.

highlights, his poise

in the pocket, it looks

kind of like Tom Brady.

He is relaxed and making the throws.

That offense looked like Atlanta's

offense with him in

the whole playbook for

Speaking of looking like Tom Brady,

of those quarterbacks.

exactly what he wanted

Reverting to type because he has had

a difficult record in

recent years, leading

the NFL in turnovers

with 31 between 2013

2016.

But he was looking good

in December up until this game.

give him the excuse.

And the excuse is...

This was a bad matchup for him.

The San Francisco 49ers'

coordinator was the

linebackers coach at

the Jags for three weeks.

So he got a chance to really watch

Bortles and see what he

could and could not do.

And by looking at the

film and what he was

doing successfully,

he decided to take

away, what he told

the

coaching staff, take this away,

put him in this position.

And he will throw interceptions.

That makes a lot of sense,

except for the four and a

half years prior to that

where Blake Bortles was not

playing well at all!

You are just going to pin all

of that on the three years that this

defensive coordinator...

He is a changed man!

This is what happened,

I had to find a little nugget in

there.

And I saw that!

He turned a corner in December!

There is no Jay Cutler!

It is a great defense,

a good running game.

Is that going to be enough

for the Jags in the

playoffs?

If Bortles can at least play

to the best of his ability and

not give up the ball?

Absolutely not.

There is no way that's going to be

enough in the playoffs.

Blake Bortles is going

to have to carry

this team at some point and he has

shown he is not able to do that

against an elite football team.

Let's take a look at the week 16

games that impacted the AFC picture.

And we start with the Buffalo Bills

and the New England Patriots.

The Bills took an early lead.

On Christmas Eve.

This was a tight game,

this could have went anywhere.

Don't make the Patriots angry!

They should know by now!

It started to change.

So much mobility for the big guy!

You cannot cover him one-on-one.

They have tried

and they have failed.

It was maybe closer

than the scoreline suggested.

How is that even possible?

The Chargers had to beat the Jets

to keep their playoff hopes alive,

Antonio Gates still going strongly.

Putting them on top.

Powell got the Jets back in it.

Go on, get him on the ground.

Melvin Gordon sealed it for LA.

Leaving the Chargers very

much in the AFC wild

card race.

Kansas have had a mixed

time of it recently.

And they took on the Miami Dolphins.

Baltimore were against Indianapolis.

The Ravens getting

a helping hand there.

Baltimore is getting good.

One win away from the playoffs.

The Steelers are

the big rivals to the

Patriots all season long.

And they just brushed aside.

this time around.

We saw a Hill touchdown taken away,

Kelvin Benjamin in that bulls

and Patriots game,

which was a critical time

of the game because this would have

put the Buffalo

Bills ahead?

This is why I said this game

was close and this is a kind of

play that they needed and right

here I don't know what happened.

And I am the first guy

to say the guy didn't

catch it.

I am all about the defense

but I don't know what you were

seeing here to overturn this.

This is amazing.

Everything I thought

was a catch rule?

I don't know what I'm talking

about because of this play.

I don't even have anything for you.

I wish I could tell you definitively

what the referees are looking at to

say this is or is not a touchdown.

Some of the things

we have seen, both of

his feet are down.

The explanation they gave

was his left foot was up

as he gained control

and then it bobbled again.

Replay is meant to fix

issues, not cause more

confusion, and that seems to be

what is happening at the moment.

A rule change in the offseason

is inevitable, right?

Yeah, because they have got

too much time to look

at that screen and figure stuff out.

It needs to be based

upon the on field officials,

if they have no clue what they're

doing, then you go

back and analyse it.

The Bills are holding on,

are they going to regret

the deals they made in the summer?

they were not expecting to be

contenders, where they?

They weren't and they

are definitely going to

regret that.

But what they are going to regret

most, I will let you give

When it happened we looked at each

other and we thought, what is he

legendary player, coming

to the end of his career.

Haven't seen much

action this season.

His left the Steelers,

they let him go.

Where has he ended up?

New England Patriots.

We called this, right?

We knew this was going to happen.

This was his Instagram feed.

Interesting, JuJu Smith-Schuster

seems to have liked

the picture.

Not sure what that tells us.

Genius from Belichick once again.

When he was asked about Harrison's

career, "Good" is what he

said.

Yeah.

That means a lot, coming

from him it means a lot.

Is that going to come

back to haunt him do

I don't think so,

I think, Harrison has

obviously had a fantastic football

career, but he's coming to the end

of his career.

He only played 40

snaps his entire year.

For a pass rusher...

Pass rushers are at

a premium in the NFL.

I don't think he's going to hold up.

I think it just might.

With one week to go,

all the divisional champions are

confirmed in the AFC,

we have just the wild

card spots to lockdown.

Currently Baltimore called the fifth

seed and Tennessee the sixth.

LA Chargers and Buffalo

will be keeping

a close eye on the Jacksonville game

in Tennessee where a loss for the

Titans could open up

some opportunities.

Baltimore simply need to win

at home to Cincinnati to

secure their post-season place.

New England and Pittsburgh

are confirmed

as the top two seeds,

there should be some movement

as to who secures home-field

advantage but New England

would have to lose

to the Jets for that

to happen and that's not

going

to happen.

The divisional title is up for grabs

here in the south, New

Orleans need to win in Tampa

to secure the division.

Behind them, Advanta

needs to beat Carolina to

cement their playoff place,

which would see three

teams from the south

through to the post-season.

Should I plan to lose,

Seattle have a chance

to sneak in through the back door

if they beat Arizona at home.

The playoffs start

over the weekend of

January 6-7th.

If we went tomorrow, New England-

Pittsburgh would be

sitting back as Tennessee face

Jacksonville and Baltimore head to

Kansas City in wild card weekend.

In the NFC, Philadelphia

and Minnesota

would have the week off and Atlanta

head to the LA Rams and Carolina

head to New Orleans.
