Week 19 NFL This Week

Hello and welcome to NFL This Week.

We've reached the divisional playoff

stage, just two steps away

now from Super Bowl LII

on February the 4th.

Joining me once again to go

through some not to be missed

highlights are two-time Super Bowl

winner Osi Umenyiora and former NFL

cornerback Jason Bell.

Right, let's look very quickly

at how things stand.

The first and second seeded teams

arrived on the scene this week.

Tennessee's win over Kansas City

means they get the easy gig and head

to reigning Super Bowl winners

New England.

Jacksonville continued

their playoff journey,

they are heading back to Pittsburgh,

the scene of their convincing

regular-season victory.

In the NFC the impact of losing

quarterback Carson Wentz

is being felt by the number

one seeds Philadelphia.

They were actually classed

as underdogs at home

to sixth-seeded Atlanta.

In the other game New Orleans

head to Minnesota for

a mouthwatering game

and that is where we will start.

Case Keenum has proved that value

for money does exist in the NFL.

Whilst the league's highest paid

player, Matt Stafford,

pulls in $27 million a year,

Keenum is making a relatively modest

$2 million on his one-year deal.

Such is the difference in pay it

would take Keenum another 25 years

just to make the $50 million that

Stafford received

as a signing bonus.

Small change to these two.

With Keenum effortlessly

controlling the offense coupled

with the destructive Mike Zimmer

inspired defense the Vikings

are on a roll entering the playoffs.

Should King Keenum lead the Vikings

to Super Bowl glory in Minnesota,

legendary status would be granted,

not to mention a few well earned

extra zeros on his wage slip.

More importantly though

he will succeed where other

Vikings have failed.

Whatever you do, I urge you not

to move, don't gorge switching

not sure really what he's thinking.

where to go or what to do

and tell him this really happened.

impossible that situation was.

I don't know right now,

to do all I can and never let that

happen again and if it happens

again, I shan't be playing,

but I am going to do all I can

to make sure nothing

like this happens again.

I'm still kind of fresh so it

didn't really sink in.

I work in loads of sports

and there are lots where I think

the player wouldn't do that.

Yes, it takes a grown man.

I know he is 21, but it takes

a grown man to stand

in front of the camera

after something like that.

You feel like you let

your city down, you let

your team-mates down

and he is going to have

an outstanding career.

This is just a small

blip on the radar.

So just give him a hug really.

Yeah, you know, luckily he has got

some good people around

and they are probably

saying hey, go out there,

get it over with and move

on because there is nothing

you can do about it.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have pulled

off the upset of the playoffs.

The Jaguars are in the AFC

Championship Game for

the first time since 1999.

They knocked off the Steelers

in Pittsburgh 45-42.

I am just happy to win and happy

to be able to continue

to play for another week.

There are a lot of guys sitting

at home on the couch watching this

wishing they could play.

This team whacked us

good in October.

Are you kidding me?

We realised it was

a good football team.

They played better

than we did today.

I feel bad because I feel like I let

the fans down, my team-mates down.

To lose this at home there will be

some that say we had a great season,

thanks for the ride,

but a lot of them are

disappointed like we are.

It wasn't enough.

I have said it all year long,

I really don't care,

I couldn't care less what anybody

in here says about me, what anybody

in the world says about me.

He is an angry man in the sense

of he is using that anger to prove

a point and you sort of wonder how

much the Jags used comments

in the week from Tomlin,

from Bell about looking ahead

to the New England

tie to fire them up.

It's totally fuelled

the fire and you see that

confidence with him.

He literally looks like he does

not care which is kind

of what you want out there.

You want him saying, hey,

you have said everything

you are going to say,

I am just going to go out

here and do what I am going to do.

I know that but it has

been my experience that

when the first thing somebody says

is I don't care what anybody thinks

they usually care what people think.

So all the talk about him and not

caring and all that stuff

it is about adding fuel to the fire.

He didn't turn the ball over in this

game and all the Jaguars'

offensive pieces fell into place

which they didn't against Buffalo.

They only put ten on Buffalo and yet

they put 45 on Pittsburgh.

Listen, they had an outstanding game

plan going into this game.

They were going to run the ball

and what they started doing at first

was the play action pass

which actually opened up the running

game for the Jaguars.

Yeldon and with that block

there had a very good game.

And Leonard Fournette was back

to early form as well.

And everybody is not talking

about this but that old line

was pushing Pittsburgh around.

That is what started.

This offensive line seems

to be playing better

football in the playoffs

and that is what they need

to do, run the ball.

They had these two running backs

playing well and ultimately

you see what happened.

They pushed them around,

it was a physical game.

They are very physical side.

Yes, they are and it stars

on the line of scrimmage.

Defensively you know what they have

on the line of scrimmage.

Offensively, they were pushing

people around and they are built

from the inside out and you see that

and that is what is going to help

them propel themselves

through the playoffs.

And yet their defense

which is so strong did get pushed

around a little bit by Pittsburgh.

They conceded 42 points

which maybe surprised them, no?

They gave up 42 points

but if you see this play

that Pittsburgh made,

the Jacksonville Jaguars

were all over them.

It is a case of better offence

and defense with Antonio Brown

making spectacular catches

and Leveon Bell making

spectacular catches.

The guys were there.

Look at Smith right there.

I don't think that they just

got exposed, I think

it was better offence.

So you look at the plays in general

rather than the scoreboard?

Absolutely and we are talking

about arguably some of the best guys

in their position in the NFL.

They are going to make plays.

It is all about how they can

test it and you see

on display this is the best example.

Look at this, these guys

are battling all the way down

the field and this is the perfect

ball placed to the best receiver

in the NFL and plays like that

are going to happen.

It is all about lining up again

and trying to make another play.

The onside kick was a mistake?

They had plenty of time?

They had plenty of time

that they had not been able to stop

the Jacksonville Jaguars

so Mike Tomlin was like, OK,

if we give these guys the ball,

they might score again,

so let's at least

try and make a play.

You two can analyse offenses

and defense is as much as you want

but you know when it comes

to Minnesota and when it

comes to Jacksonville,

you know why they are in

the championship, don't you?

do and can handle and ultimately

you've got a full playbook.

You can throw anything out

there when you've got Tom Brady.

So you look good as a play caller.

that we are going to sure you know,

special, he said this

was McDaniels all over this play.

It's definitely McDaniels.

Well, that bit is, yeah, yeah!

This isn't the play, I'll show

McDaniels has been interviewing,

McDaniels, for head coach roles

but that doesn't seem

to have distracted him.

No, he's in game week.

And you know what's good

about these Patriots

is they always get looked

at

as head coach opportunities

because they win so they're used

to dealing with this.

This is the play, we

got to it eventually.

Romo said that is

a McDaniels special.

It is sweet man.

It's something you can tell

that they all obviously

practice and executed.

McDaniels must've saw something

in the Tennessee Titans

defense that he thought

it's still bizarre that coordinators

interview whilst playoffs

are still going on.

Right, but I think what happens

is that like the team,

the teams who are looking

for the head coaches travel

to New England to go see these

offensive coordinators or defensive

coordinators and that means it takes

some of the stress off of these guys

having to go travelling around

and looking for a job.

And a quick one on the Titans,

because Michael Mullarkey,

everyone thought the win

against Kansas City last week

would keep him in the job,

it isn't the case so the Titans

are looking for a new

head coach as well.

Yeah, it sucks him.

Use either something

going on with him.

It's not been quite

underdogs against the lowest seeds.

Listen, the guys motivate themselves

I thought we dealt with a lot

So our AFC and NFC championship

games have been decided.

New England held up their end of

the bargain and avoided the upset.

in 18 years.

In the NFC Philadelphia hosts

Minnesota, who will no doubt come

into the game on an incredible high

You could feel the nerves

around Philadelphia

at the start of that game?

Yes and rightly so.

Obviously their quarterback hadn't

played well, they didn't know

what they were going to get out

of him in this particular game

and Atlanta was going in

as the favourite and rightfully so.

But Nick Foles found

a way to get the job done

for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Moving on!

I like what they did too

with the play calling and as you see

right here they started up early

and they took a deep shot.

Ultimately they wanted

to loosen up their defence,

get the defensive backs backed up

a little bit.

But Foles struggled.

He struggled but this

is what they wanted to do.

They wanted to throw short passes

and eventually they got it together.

They had two turnovers

that they had to come back

from and they just found a way,

they kept plugging away.

So how much credit do you give

to Doug Pederson who we saw there?

He adapted the plays as the game

went on to suit Foles,

to try and calm things down,

to make things simple.

Conditions were not suitable

for him to be taking shots.

I don't think Nick Foles is that

type of quarterback anyway.

But what he did was he simplified

the game, short passes,

a running game, a little gadget

placed here and there,

that kind of slowed down Atlanta's

defence and you saw how it worked

over the course of the game.

Yeah, like all that misdirection,

there is a reason for that,

so they can eventually run right up

the middle, get everybody

moving around and that

was a good play call.

What hasn't changed all

season is the strength

of that Eagles defence.

That defensive line

get in after folks.

Their secondary is a lot

better than people think.

This is a football team that can

flat-out get after the quarterback.

They bring in waves of defensive

linemen and waves of pass rushers.

Fletcher Cox obviously one of

the best defensive interior lines.

Look at him, splitting that

team, that is a very

difficult thing to do.

He dominated this football game.

Yeah, him and Brandon Graham

were out there just throwing people

around and ultimately

that is what you have got

to do to stop the run.

Their strength is their defensive

line and getting after people

and right here this is just amazing.

I didn't think this was going

to happen but Jalen Mills

and one-on-one coverage and Julio

slips and he holds it down.

This is what you need,

you need your guy to make plays

when they have to in one-on-one

situations and that

is what happened.

Julio lost his feet

and they let them play, though.

I wouldn't have thrown the flag

because it was so close.

They let them play and ultimately

they came up with the win.

The Eagles said afterwards

that they knew what play was coming

even whilst the Falcons

were still in the huddle,

so is that good coaching

on the defensive side for the Eagles

or poor coaching on the offensive

side for the Falcons?

That is just flat out good

coaching by Jim Schwartz

the coaching coordinator.

Who has also been linked

with head coach jobs.

Exactly.

Just preparing his guys

over and over again.

They said they had seen that play

five times that particular week

so it is good coaching.

It don't matter what play you have

seen when you have got Julio Jones.

He might have seen the play

and he just goes up and gets

the ball and that is why he is one

of the best receivers in the league.

Will that performance

have calmed things down

going into the Championship game

or will nerves be swirling around

Philadelphia again for that?

I think Philly is

always worried, right!

The fan base is always thinking

something bad is going to happen

but as the players I feel

like they have got this head coach's

kind of temperament.

They are just going to go

out there and fight.
