Here we are, then. The waiting is over. For seven years Brazil has | :00:52. | :01:00.
been preparing, four years is since a party they all enjoyed in London | :01:01. | :01:04.
and finally we can say, welcomed to Rio and the 2016 Olympic Games. And | :01:05. | :01:10.
I'm glad to say the city is looking resplendent for you this morning. | :01:11. | :01:13.
The iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in all its glory, and the | :01:14. | :01:20.
sight of the Sugarloaf Mountain just next door, dominating the skyline | :01:21. | :01:26.
above Copacabana Beach. You know that you're in Rio. 25 kilometres | :01:27. | :01:38.
along the coast you find us, in the Rio limp the park for day one of the | :01:39. | :01:45.
Olympics. Welcome one and all. There was a steady stream of people coming | :01:46. | :01:49.
into the park this morning as we come into our very first taste of | :01:50. | :01:55.
Olympic action. The temperature has already hit 25, 20 6 degrees. The | :01:56. | :01:59.
perfect way to kick off our Olympics coverage. It is morning here, so, | :02:00. | :02:09.
four hours ahead of where you are, we are just after nine o'clock in | :02:10. | :02:13.
the morning. I will make sure to remind myself of that. This is going | :02:14. | :02:18.
to be our home for the next two weeks or so on BBC Four. We will be | :02:19. | :02:21.
bringing you the buzz of the Olympic Park every day. Thank you for | :02:22. | :02:26.
staying with us, in advance. Let me show you around. Let's start with | :02:27. | :02:34.
this red, yellow and orange number, the Olympic Tennis Centre, that is | :02:35. | :02:37.
centre court where Andy Murray could be defending the Olympic title that | :02:38. | :02:42.
he won back in 2012. We will talk about Andy Murray and a second. He | :02:43. | :02:48.
had some business to do last night. This beige building over here is the | :02:49. | :02:54.
Aquatic Centre. It is open air. Tom Bailey will be diving up there on | :02:55. | :02:57.
his platform, enjoying the environment and whatever the weather | :02:58. | :03:00.
is doing when he takes to the platform. -- Tom Bailey. And how | :03:01. | :03:08.
about these three buildings that you can see? This is the karaoke arenas, | :03:09. | :03:18.
basketball has the biggest one -- Carioca arenas. We will see | :03:19. | :03:21.
taekwondo, Jade Jones, another Olympic champion, can she actually | :03:22. | :03:28.
taekwondo gold that she got in 2012 's this place lights up later in the | :03:29. | :03:33.
day. All of the venues do, so when Clare Balding is bringing you the | :03:34. | :03:37.
latest action later, you will see it in all its twilight glory, including | :03:38. | :03:42.
the main Olympics Aquatics Centre which is this shimmering, one over | :03:43. | :03:48.
here. It will turn a luminous blue later on today. Look forward to that | :03:49. | :03:52.
one. And before we finish the tour, I have got to show you the velodrome | :03:53. | :03:59.
just here. Laura Trott will be a headline act in there, when that | :04:00. | :04:04.
gets going in a few days' time. It is not the biggest Olympic Park. It | :04:05. | :04:10.
is about half the size of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park we enjoyed in | :04:11. | :04:14.
London 2012, but it is distinctive, nonetheless, and this is the Olympic | :04:15. | :04:21.
Way down the centre of the park. We will try to show you around the park | :04:22. | :04:25.
as much as we can during the programme. This place is only able | :04:26. | :04:29.
to come to life after the opening ceremony last night. I am aware that | :04:30. | :04:33.
it went late into the night for some of you back home, so if you missed | :04:34. | :04:37.
it, here are the best bits from the Maracana Stadium. It was a festival | :04:38. | :04:43.
of colour with dancing and costumes. And the country so famous for its | :04:44. | :04:48.
rainforest, and lush, green trees, brought together to create the | :04:49. | :04:52.
Olympic rings. What a sight that was. Team GB was led by Andy Murray, | :04:53. | :05:00.
the reigning Olympic tennis champion, before the Olympic flame | :05:01. | :05:07.
made its way in, denied Olympic gold in Athens 2004, he finally had | :05:08. | :05:12.
another chance at glory. With the cauldron lit, the game -- the games | :05:13. | :05:18.
officially began with a flurry of fireworks. You may know already -- | :05:19. | :05:24.
you may already know this but the Maracana as one of four Olympic zone | :05:25. | :05:28.
is dotted around the city. As well as both ceremonies, the football | :05:29. | :05:32.
finals will take place in the national stadium. Just next door is | :05:33. | :05:37.
the other circular venue, the home of volleyball. There is the samba | :05:38. | :05:44.
drone, an iconic location for the annual carnival in Rio. That has | :05:45. | :05:47.
been transformed into an archery venue. Last but not least, the | :05:48. | :05:57.
Olympic Stadium, were the stage is set for Usain Bolt to create yet | :05:58. | :06:04.
more history. If we headed west, we find Copacabana Beach, arguably the | :06:05. | :06:09.
most famous beach in the world, and right in the heart of it is that | :06:10. | :06:12.
stunning venue. Where better to stage the beach volleyball? We had | :06:13. | :06:19.
better get ourselves down there to the beach volleyball. That is going | :06:20. | :06:24.
to be a popular spot. We're going to see road cycling and triathlon | :06:25. | :06:27.
decided down on the coast as well. The rowing, the canoe sprint and the | :06:28. | :06:35.
sailing are taking place amidst the familiar scenery around there. 20 | :06:36. | :06:39.
kilometres to the north, we find the third Olympic zone, home to the | :06:40. | :06:44.
highest concentration of military personnel in Latin America. No big | :06:45. | :06:49.
surprise that as well we will find the shooting centre. Rugby sevens | :06:50. | :06:55.
and modern pentathlon will take place in the Diadora Stadium. And | :06:56. | :07:04.
the Rio radical Park is where to go for all you adrenaline junkies. We | :07:05. | :07:09.
will see BMX and slalom there. Last but not least, our spot, Baha. It | :07:10. | :07:22.
has the arena that is home to the handball. Away from the park, we | :07:23. | :07:28.
have our own very own beach in Baha, who needs Copacabana? B got 18 | :07:29. | :07:34.
kilometres orbit along the coast, including whether time trial is | :07:35. | :07:41.
going to be staged. We have the brand-new Olympic golf course. We | :07:42. | :07:44.
will see that in action from next week. It really is a big and | :07:45. | :07:50.
beautiful place, Rio. I will try to show you as much of it as we can in | :07:51. | :07:55.
the next fortnight. In the more immediate future, here is what is | :07:56. | :07:59.
coming up on our very first programme of the games. We're | :08:00. | :08:12.
kicking things off with Hungary against Serbia in water polo. There | :08:13. | :08:20.
is an all European clash in the women's rugby sevens, France against | :08:21. | :08:25.
Spain. We'll be live to the Diadora Stadium. India have a proud history | :08:26. | :08:33.
in the hockey, worse for the Irish men it is a first Olympic appearance | :08:34. | :08:40.
in over 100 years. Fresh from her Wimbledon mixed doubles title, | :08:41. | :08:45.
Heather Watson starts Olympic singles campaign. And we're going to | :08:46. | :08:52.
go back with the hockey because group a is going to be a tough test | :08:53. | :08:57.
for Great Britain. An agonising fourth place in London 2012, and the | :08:58. | :09:03.
campaign begins against Belgium. And it is the men's gymnastics | :09:04. | :09:08.
qualification. Medals expected from Max Whitlock, Lewis Smith and | :09:09. | :09:16.
company. No room for slip-ups today. Here is how the afternoon of day one | :09:17. | :09:21.
is shaping up for you guys on BBC Four. We kick off with water polo, | :09:22. | :09:25.
that is coming up shortly. Then the rugby sevens. We have a double dose | :09:26. | :09:33.
of hockey. Sandwiched in the middle, we will see Heather Watson in the | :09:34. | :09:36.
tennis, then we have the men's gymnastics. Matt Whittle -- Max | :09:37. | :09:45.
Whitlock and Team GB. Then we have beach volleyball, shooting and | :09:46. | :09:54.
swimming. The action has already started. Hazel and the team are | :09:55. | :09:58.
showing the men's single sculls heats on BBC One. If you fancy that, | :09:59. | :10:02.
that is the place to go. You can follow the rest of the action on the | :10:03. | :10:08.
Red Button, the BBC sport website or you can stay with us on BBC Four. | :10:09. | :10:14.
So, make your choice. And make the right choice. Thank you very much. | :10:15. | :10:18.
Now you know where everything is and what is in store, here are the many | :10:19. | :10:23.
ways you can follow Rio 2016 on the BBC. To help you make even more of | :10:24. | :10:36.
the Rio 2016 Olympic Games from boxing to badminton, potty to | :10:37. | :10:40.
handball, we have it all covered on the BBC. Alongside coverage on BBC | :10:41. | :10:46.
One, BBC Four and Radio 5Live, you can access 24 live sports on the BBC | :10:47. | :10:52.
sport website or on the BBC sport app on mobile and connected TV. The | :10:53. | :10:57.
best of these will be available on the Red Button. If that is not | :10:58. | :11:04.
enough, you can download the BBC sport app and set up news and medal | :11:05. | :11:09.
alerts and reminders so that you can follow all of your favourite sports. | :11:10. | :11:16.
So now you know. We will kick off coverage with the water polo. The | :11:17. | :11:19.
finals of which will take place in the Olympics Aquatics Centre that I | :11:20. | :11:25.
showed you. This week it is packed with swimming, the heats of which | :11:26. | :11:29.
are starting in about four hours' time. We're going to kick things off | :11:30. | :11:36.
over here at the Maria Lake Aquatics Centre for a grudge match between | :11:37. | :11:40.
two water polo heavyweights. Before we get to the action, here is a | :11:41. | :11:51.
little guide to the sport. Water polo has been an Olympic sport since | :11:52. | :11:57.
1900 in Paris. There are seven players in each team, six so-called | :11:58. | :12:01.
outfield players and a goalkeeper. They are allowed six reserves and | :12:02. | :12:06.
unlimited substitutions. Substitutes are crucial because of the gruelling | :12:07. | :12:10.
nature of the sport. The players are not allowed to touch the bottom of | :12:11. | :12:14.
the pool during the match at any point. They have two state upright | :12:15. | :12:19.
and ready by keeping the legs moving backwards and forwards in what is | :12:20. | :12:24.
known as the eggbeater motion. There are two important lines, the two | :12:25. | :12:27.
metre line and a five metre line. The two metre line is two metres | :12:28. | :12:31.
from the goal and the attacking team are not allowed to pass it unless | :12:32. | :12:34.
they have possession of the ball or it is already in that area. If an | :12:35. | :12:38.
attacking players fouled within five metres of the goal, the referee can | :12:39. | :12:42.
award a penalty shot from the five metre line. If the file is committed | :12:43. | :12:47.
further out than five metres, a free-throw is awarded. Goalkeepers | :12:48. | :12:51.
can use two hands at once but outfield players can only use one | :12:52. | :12:56.
hand at the time. The game is split into four quarters of eight minutes | :12:57. | :12:59.
and although the total playing time is 32 minutes, the game usually | :13:00. | :13:04.
lasts for over an hour, because it is stopped and started regularly. | :13:05. | :13:08.
Each quarter begins with the times lean -- the teams lined up on the | :13:09. | :13:12.
goal lines and when the referee blows the whistle, they sprint | :13:13. | :13:17.
towards centre of the pool. A shot clock controls time for shooting | :13:18. | :13:20.
because when in possession teams only have 30 seconds to shoot at | :13:21. | :13:27.
all. It is not a sport for the thing parted or anyone who is not good at | :13:28. | :13:31.
swimming. There are spectators making the way down to the Aquatic | :13:32. | :13:36.
Centre. They are getting themselves into position for this match. Water | :13:37. | :13:41.
polo is important in mainland Europe and North America. And Ollie | :13:42. | :13:46.
Williams has jetted into join us from there. Would you say that the | :13:47. | :13:53.
temperature or the scenery is the biggest thing 's look at these | :13:54. | :13:59.
hills. It is really good. You know your stuff about water polo. Hungary | :14:00. | :14:04.
and Serbia will not pull any punches. It is vicious under the | :14:05. | :14:08.
water. It is a vicious sport to begin with. There is track cycling | :14:09. | :14:13.
on the opening morning and it was Britain and Australia, that would be | :14:14. | :14:17.
setting the tone of the Olympics for both of those teams. And water polo | :14:18. | :14:23.
is track cycling for Hungary. It is track cycling for Serbia, they have | :14:24. | :14:26.
won just about everything since 2013. All the rest of the athletes | :14:27. | :14:31.
are watching back in the Olympics village, and it will set the tone | :14:32. | :14:37.
for those entire teams. It could be like a wild West shoot out. This | :14:38. | :14:40.
could be the final, that we are about to watch. Let's have a look at | :14:41. | :14:46.
the groups. We have 12 teams in the men's competition. Group A, Group B, | :14:47. | :14:51.
six teams in each, the top four automatically progress. If we have a | :14:52. | :14:56.
look at group A, that is where we find Serbia and Hungary. Hungary, | :14:57. | :15:04.
the 15th medals and Olympic competition, the most successful in | :15:05. | :15:07.
the history of this sport, and Serbia have won everything there is | :15:08. | :15:08.
to win in the last few years. You look at the other teams, pick | :15:09. | :15:19.
out maybe Croatia, the champions in 2012. The USA were dark horses in | :15:20. | :15:23.
the past, have done quite well at a couple of Olympics. Brazil are now | :15:24. | :15:29.
coached by a man who has won Olympic titles with three different teams | :15:30. | :15:33.
before. There are maybe eight or nine teams who stand a realistic | :15:34. | :15:37.
chance of winning. Let's talk about Hungary. You talk about all those | :15:38. | :15:43.
successes over the years. The World Championship is decided by the world | :15:44. | :15:46.
league. They missed out on the top eight, but only just. They want to | :15:47. | :15:51.
get themselves back on the top of the roster. Yes, the world league is | :15:52. | :15:55.
difficult to predict sometimes, who wins it changes year-on-year. It is | :15:56. | :16:01.
not necessarily the absolute and end all, but Hungary, bread team that | :16:02. | :16:04.
won Olympics won Olympics after Olympics after Olympics, to get | :16:05. | :16:07.
nothing at London 2012 is a big disaster. They need to put that | :16:08. | :16:12.
right, starting this morning. Starting this afternoon for you back | :16:13. | :16:16.
home. They have already started. Action got underway at about 9am our | :16:17. | :16:20.
morning and this is exactly what happened. It was Hungary who went | :16:21. | :16:26.
ahead first in the opening stages of the game. Serbia were not far | :16:27. | :16:35.
behind. Hungary came back to take the lead once again before Serbia... | :16:36. | :16:40.
It is end to end stuff. It is told to tone, blow for blow. Serbia | :16:41. | :16:45.
equalised, got the fourth goal, before Hungary went ahead once again | :16:46. | :16:50.
to make it 3-2. Serbia equalised again, they said it would be tight. | :16:51. | :16:56.
At the moment, the score is Hungary leading 5-3. We talked about scores | :16:57. | :17:02.
to settle. Shall we go to the second quarter? I think we will. Let's head | :17:03. | :17:09.
into the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre now and see exactly what is going on | :17:10. | :17:15.
right now. The sun is shimmering of that open-air arena. We can see the | :17:16. | :17:18.
water. We will see plenty more water polo throughout the day. But we can | :17:19. | :17:24.
hand over for the end of the first quarter and going into the second | :17:25. | :17:26.
quarter. Will the Hungarians use the | :17:27. | :17:42.
remainder to try to control the clock? The seconds will count down. | :17:43. | :17:47.
That will be the end of the first period. I save right at the end. It | :17:48. | :17:53.
is a long effort in and the Serbians find themselves down by two to | :17:54. | :17:56.
Hungary after the first eight minutes of play. | :17:57. | :19:02.
And there you see the concentration coming in from the Serbians as they | :19:03. | :19:12.
listen to their coach. They will have not expected this, but no route | :19:13. | :19:19.
to an Olympic medal will be an easy one. Serbia know that for sure. They | :19:20. | :19:23.
have had so much success in the last Olympic cycle. Currently the | :19:24. | :19:29.
champions of six of the seven major titles in that time. Probably one of | :19:30. | :19:33.
the most noticeable ones or most notable ones, probably, is the win | :19:34. | :19:37.
at home in Belgrade. That was earlier this year, they became | :19:38. | :19:41.
European champions. The pressure from Serbia is immense. The | :19:42. | :19:47.
expectation of gold in Rio is at the highest of possibly any of the | :19:48. | :19:52.
teams, of any of the sports. Serbia are expected to be able to come here | :19:53. | :19:58.
and get a medal, but Hungary have them on the ropes as we prepare for | :19:59. | :20:11.
the second period. And they will take off in the blue helmets, that | :20:12. | :20:16.
is Hungary. What a great shot to show you just the force in the pool | :20:17. | :20:22.
as it is locked and won again. So key IDs possessions. There are not a | :20:23. | :20:25.
great amount of them back and forth and if you control the ball well and | :20:26. | :20:31.
win them at those opening swims, it is a big part of controlling the | :20:32. | :20:35.
outcome of a match. Still going in the same direction, left to right, | :20:36. | :20:39.
Hungary are in the blue helmets. And in defence, White helmets, Serbia. | :20:40. | :20:44.
Hungary are looking to double the score line. The whistle comes in and | :20:45. | :20:55.
the Serbians with the infra action leading to the exclusion. Hungary by | :20:56. | :20:58.
feeling their moment. The goal post is the goalkeeper's | :20:59. | :21:15.
best friend in this instance. You see the excitement there and the | :21:16. | :21:20.
pleasure from the Serbian as he gets the benefit. | :21:21. | :21:34.
A big part of a momentum shift, potentially. The whistle comes in. | :21:35. | :21:49.
The extra man in the pool... For Serbia, a little bit of a change of | :21:50. | :21:57.
pace. Defeat to the outside. Awaiting the perfect opportunity. | :21:58. | :22:01.
The whistle extensively coming in from the official. They will have a | :22:02. | :22:11.
real significant advantage, Serbia. They have six players against four. | :22:12. | :22:23.
Serbia are waiting too long and will run out of time. What a defensive | :22:24. | :22:32.
stance from Hungary! Two players down and just coming back into the | :22:33. | :22:35.
field of play. They did enough to force the shops up and over the top | :22:36. | :22:37.
of goal. -- forced the shot. Two minutes gone already in the | :22:38. | :22:51.
second period and they get another look at it, Hungary, to try to | :22:52. | :23:01.
double the scoreline. They don't waste any time, it is a good tactic, | :23:02. | :23:03.
but only if it is accurate. Serbia have been a little bit | :23:04. | :23:17.
wasteful as yet. Can they be more purposeful here? | :23:18. | :23:25.
Serbia retain control, trying to draw it if they can. A whip into the | :23:26. | :23:35.
back of goal, they needed that as much as any they have taken thus | :23:36. | :23:36.
far. The goalkeeper beaten cleanly with | :23:37. | :23:52.
the shot from the Serbian, bringing this match within one. | :23:53. | :24:07.
The clinical strike from He gets the first goal of his | :24:08. | :24:17.
Olympic Games in Rio. From the outside, a lot of pressure | :24:18. | :24:32.
being applied by the Serbians against the Hungarians in fence -- | :24:33. | :24:40.
offence. These positions are ever telling. | :24:41. | :24:45.
Hungary have had the chance to be three goals up twice. They have been | :24:46. | :24:56.
unable to take the chance. You see the dishevelled look of the centre | :24:57. | :25:01.
forward, trying to get into a favourable position to shoot. They | :25:02. | :25:02.
were going to have none of it. Balazs Harai has the five metre | :25:03. | :25:27.
shot. Waiting for the whistle from the official. | :25:28. | :25:36.
And finish there is ever precise for Hungary and they have got themselves | :25:37. | :25:41.
that two goal margin again. Daniel Varga got the goal. 32 years | :25:42. | :25:48.
of age. Hungarians get the exclusion. Serbia | :25:49. | :26:21.
need to really continue just to keep pace and keep this game tight. Wait | :26:22. | :26:27.
for their chance at another pocket or passage of play. It is the | :26:28. | :26:33.
Hungarians again that are ever resilient. They are staunch in | :26:34. | :26:39.
defence again. It is led by their emotional leader in the back there. | :26:40. | :26:43.
The defence did the work. Here are now the Hungarians in blue. | :26:44. | :27:03.
Just trying to deceive and open up a shooting lane. | :27:04. | :27:23.
Hungary Airways now from goal. Putting it into an area for them to | :27:24. | :27:35.
be able to retain, drawing out the Serbian defence inside of 20 seconds | :27:36. | :27:40.
on the shot clock. We are at the halfway point of the second period | :27:41. | :27:44.
and they still hold that two goal margin. Can they stretch it, though, | :27:45. | :27:47.
to a third? That was an easy deflection for | :27:48. | :28:03.
Mitrovic. The Hungarians retain the opportunity to reload. | :28:04. | :28:10.
Good control from Hungary in this offensive sequence. Trying to tire | :28:11. | :28:20.
out the defence if they can, of Serbia, and tried to establish | :28:21. | :28:24.
control in this match. So many one-on-one battles going on in this | :28:25. | :28:29.
half of the pool. Serbia again having to really assert themselves, | :28:30. | :28:30.
trying to force the issue. Mitrovic was good enough to make the | :28:31. | :28:52.
save. Some great ball movement here from | :28:53. | :29:03.
Serbia. Looking more continuous in their offensive momentum. | :29:04. | :29:21.
You could see how engaged Hosnyanszky was emotionally from the | :29:22. | :29:24.
start of the match. Serbia with another great save. The | :29:25. | :29:36.
Hungarians cannot get that third goal advantage. | :29:37. | :29:51.
Mitrovic has done a great job. Awaiting a restart. | :29:52. | :30:09.
He has received his helmet back, to put it on. That is the Hungarian | :30:10. | :30:23.
Centre forward, Balazs Harai. He gets himself reloaded, thank you, | :30:24. | :30:24.
sir. What can Hungary do? Serbia have won everything there is | :30:25. | :30:28.
to win in the last few years. Tremendous struggle going on off the | :30:29. | :30:40.
ball. The officials keeping a close watch on map. So much part of the | :30:41. | :30:47.
subtlety of this will be that the Hungarian 's will come forward, | :30:48. | :30:50.
Serbia relenting a little bit, giving some more space which the | :30:51. | :30:55.
Hungarian striker sees, what a shot and what a delightful finish, a | :30:56. | :31:02.
scorcher, of the post and in, Krisztian Manhercz has opened up a | :31:03. | :31:08.
3-goal advantage for Hungary. And that great finish of the post and in | :31:09. | :31:12.
from long range. It was like a SCUD missile. And the Serbians have | :31:13. | :31:20.
fallen back by three goals now. The Hungarian 's are loving it. -- the | :31:21. | :31:37.
Hungarians. One shot, one goal, that is the way they draw it up ahead of | :31:38. | :31:47.
the match. Ever efficient, a big part of the success so far from the | :31:48. | :31:51.
Hungarian is, very resilient defensively. They have done their | :31:52. | :31:56.
best to try to keep all of the men in the pool as well. There is a real | :31:57. | :32:00.
struggle going on in that Serbian defence of half. Beat in, look at | :32:01. | :32:09.
that, and the tall, elevated lofted pass, and there is no time wasted as | :32:10. | :32:16.
the strong hand, he will just take that and pound it down past Nagy. | :32:17. | :32:22.
And the Serbians back in it, too. Working from the off side, the | :32:23. | :32:49.
Hungarian 's. They have given up this position. They know that is | :32:50. | :32:55.
crucial. The Hungarian coach, looking on. Tibor Benedict with a | :32:56. | :33:12.
great move. The Hungarians execute a great defensive sequence. Nagy. A | :33:13. | :33:19.
minute remaining in this first half. The Hungarians again questing to | :33:20. | :33:26.
re-establish that three goal margin. They just force that right through. | :33:27. | :33:34.
That is absolutely destroying, to come forward and finished with such | :33:35. | :33:42.
precision. Gergo Zalanki comes straight at the Serbian defence and | :33:43. | :33:45.
just busts it right through the hands. There can be nothing done on | :33:46. | :33:56.
that play to stop the shot. Nothing to be done by Mitrovic, and he knows | :33:57. | :34:11.
it, as he looks skyward. Gergo Zalanki, with his first goal. Of | :34:12. | :34:16.
these Olympic Games in Rio. Inside this last-minute. It will be a power | :34:17. | :34:26.
play. They need to take advantage here, Serbia. It is going to be a | :34:27. | :34:37.
time-out, as called by the Serbian coach to stop this possession. He | :34:38. | :34:46.
wants to make sure that his side is clear on exactly what the game plan | :34:47. | :34:52.
is. They need to try and strike to bring this within two. The | :34:53. | :35:00.
Hungarians have been very efficient. They stay poised, and this is a | :35:01. | :35:05.
reminder to his Serbian side, now urged on by their team-mates. One | :35:06. | :35:15.
time-out apiece taken so far. Welcome, wherever you are watching, | :35:16. | :35:19.
to Rio, and this Aquatic Centre. It will be Serbia in the White with | :35:20. | :35:44.
the blue trim looking for a shot. Trying to anticipate again, Serbia | :35:45. | :35:51.
looking a little hesitant, and that is a ripping delivery from Dusan | :35:52. | :35:59.
Mandic, takes all that possession and the left-handed strike is | :36:00. | :36:04.
lethal, across the face of goal, and Nagy can hardly even move. It | :36:05. | :36:12.
whistles like past. Bringing this match within touching distance. | :36:13. | :36:22.
Tremendous velocity and perfect placement. The Hungarian is now with | :36:23. | :36:35.
21 seconds remaining in the half, using an opportunity to try and | :36:36. | :36:42.
reassert that three goal margin. He will know, he's a man of experience, | :36:43. | :36:46.
he has been there and done it himself. The importance of that | :36:47. | :36:57.
third goal, with a three possession swing and in water polo, that is | :36:58. | :37:04.
quite a bit, at world-class level. For the Serbians to try and | :37:05. | :37:05.
overcome. It is back in, Hungary are waiting, | :37:06. | :37:22.
the shot clock is synchronised with the game clock now. The waiting time | :37:23. | :37:32.
is their enemy, though. The Serbians are doing enough. Can they get a | :37:33. | :37:38.
shot of any significance? And what a comeback from Hungary, the | :37:39. | :37:45.
management of the clock is divine, and the finish, they could not have | :37:46. | :37:49.
executed any better than their coach would have wanted. That is a moment | :37:50. | :37:55.
of real class. Just to feed it in, and the off-load as it is forced | :37:56. | :38:03.
across the line. And you see the Hungarian is executing a game plan. | :38:04. | :38:12.
That from Decker has brought this match to a 3- goal advantage for the | :38:13. | :38:17.
Hungarians. What a first half of play it has been. The Hungarian 's | :38:18. | :38:26.
have found themselves in front, 9-6. It really has been a great game so | :38:27. | :38:33.
far. Hungary leading by nine goals to six and went toe to toe in that | :38:34. | :38:38.
first half, with the Hungarian is asserting themselves from the end of | :38:39. | :38:42.
the first half. We spoke about this being a real grudge match, one that | :38:43. | :38:46.
could be the final, and it has not disappointed so far. It hasn't. In | :38:47. | :38:52.
the build-up to this, Hungary have not performed so well over the last | :38:53. | :38:58.
couple of years and they have dampened expectations. They have | :38:59. | :39:01.
said, we are not the favourites, we are not the favourites, but it is | :39:02. | :39:05.
like Manchester City and Manchester United saying, we are not their | :39:06. | :39:08.
babies, but they have got a pretty good chance of winning this. Look at | :39:09. | :39:13.
how they have come out of the blocks in this game. This is a fantastic | :39:14. | :39:17.
game to watch. You can feel the intensity coming off it. It is | :39:18. | :39:22.
intense. We were talking about how hard it is because they have got to | :39:23. | :39:27.
keep themselves afloat. They get a foul, if they touch the bottom or | :39:28. | :39:31.
the size. It is the eggbeater kick motion that keeps you up right all | :39:32. | :39:36.
the time. If you are the goalkeeper you are keeping yourself afloat the | :39:37. | :39:40.
whole time then you have to have the athleticism to lunge in any given | :39:41. | :39:46.
direction. There is a strategic element as well, you have to be | :39:47. | :39:50.
thinking whilst you're doing this. They are moving the ball around the | :39:51. | :39:53.
whole time. The defensive aspect is to block any angle on a shot. It is | :39:54. | :40:01.
like a chess match sometimes. They are being punched and kicked | :40:02. | :40:05.
underwater all the way through! That is just the game of water polo. And | :40:06. | :40:11.
you mention the athleticism. Let's look at the 11th goal of the match | :40:12. | :40:18.
scored by Krisztian Manhercz. And you see how much power they can | :40:19. | :40:23.
generate in the arm. It is that kind of shot. The goalkeeper has been | :40:24. | :40:28.
relatively good in this game so far. But look at a shot like that. When | :40:29. | :40:34.
you are watching this sport, look for anticipation from people. | :40:35. | :40:39.
Certainly, in some of the other girls we saw, players move | :40:40. | :40:42.
fractionally before you spot what they are too. They are so skilled at | :40:43. | :40:47.
this level, you have to move and anticipate so much in environment. | :40:48. | :40:54.
We have an idea of what it means to Hungary. They may be playing it down | :40:55. | :40:57.
but they cannot hide their emotions all the time. 60 years ago, they had | :40:58. | :41:06.
one of the most iconic games in the Olympics, didn't they, against the | :41:07. | :41:11.
old soviet union in the final. It was cold blood in the weather. | :41:12. | :41:16.
Quentin Tarantino made a documentary about this. Blood in the water was | :41:17. | :41:22.
the Melbourne 9056 Olympics. What happened was, Hungary played a | :41:23. | :41:26.
soviet union in the middle of the Hungarian revolution that was | :41:27. | :41:29.
happening back home for the Hungarian is against the Soviet | :41:30. | :41:33.
Union. It was an incredible, politically charged game. It was | :41:34. | :41:39.
violent. You had players back there, that is one of the top Hungarian | :41:40. | :41:43.
players. You can see the blood coming down his face from a punch | :41:44. | :41:46.
from the Soviet player he was marking. After that they called off | :41:47. | :41:52.
the game with a minute to go because it was so violent, the fans and | :41:53. | :41:58.
players were attacking each other. Hungary won the gameplay - zero. | :41:59. | :42:02.
Half of the Hungarian team could not go home and sought asylum in the US, | :42:03. | :42:07.
including the man with a blood coming down. He went on in the US to | :42:08. | :42:13.
become the coach of Mark Spitz, one of the greatest Olympians of all | :42:14. | :42:18.
time. Fascinating story. It sounds a bit 18- rated that one in 1956. | :42:19. | :42:27.
Thankfully, this is a bit more PG13. Let's see what is going on on BBC | :42:28. | :42:31.
One right now. They have got wall-to-wall coverage of Rio like | :42:32. | :42:36.
ourselves, and right now they are featuring the men's road race. Chris | :42:37. | :42:41.
Froome, three times Tour de France champion, he's trying to add to what | :42:42. | :42:45.
was a bronze medal that he won in a time trial in London 2012. He has | :42:46. | :42:53.
told us that that course there is tough, really tough. Next up on BBC | :42:54. | :42:59.
One, we will see Ashley McKenzie, the Commonwealth judo champion in | :43:00. | :43:05.
the 60 kilograms category taking to the mat for his first bout of the | :43:06. | :43:13.
games. But, if you choose to stay with us on BBC Four, thank you very | :43:14. | :43:17.
much indeed. We will try to keep you up-to-date with as much of the | :43:18. | :43:22.
action as possible over the course of our programme. We are going to | :43:23. | :43:27.
head back into the beige loading, the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre for | :43:28. | :43:30.
the second half of Serbia against Hungary. It is not having six as we | :43:31. | :43:37.
start the second half. So let's handover to commentator. | :43:38. | :43:41.
This will be Hungary moving from right to left. And an opportunity, | :43:42. | :43:52.
one more time. They are not wasting any time. We've all strike from | :43:53. | :43:59.
Norbert Hosnyanszky. How the light that? -- lethal strike, how do you | :44:00. | :44:08.
like that? You can see the acknowledgement from the Serbian | :44:09. | :44:19.
Inderal. He was beaten quickly, and there was nothing he could have done | :44:20. | :44:26.
about that one, Slobodan Nikic. That is a momentum shift. Without doubt, | :44:27. | :44:29.
it was in favour of Hungary as it was in that late strike from Kis at | :44:30. | :44:41.
the end of the first half, book ending each half for Hungary. And | :44:42. | :44:46.
they have been great defensively. The hand going up. It is lofted | :44:47. | :44:56.
beyond the confines and the official waiting for the ball to be brought | :44:57. | :45:05.
back in. Just getting away from the Serbian. And Hungary are looking | :45:06. | :45:07.
more and more comfortable. Very subtle, these battles that go | :45:08. | :45:24.
on. Just trying to win favour in the call. | :45:25. | :45:36.
Gets himself involved in the match, Nikic. | :45:37. | :45:56.
The feed is central, that has been a dangerous area. They have drawn the | :45:57. | :46:02.
exclusion against Serbia. The quick play and the feed is in | :46:03. | :46:15.
and it is pounced on. The delivery is right on the mark. | :46:16. | :46:34.
This game is kept within touch now. Back within three. | :46:35. | :46:51.
He thought he was coming off for a substitution, but he will remain. | :46:52. | :46:59.
Works to get back into a centre defence position there. | :47:00. | :47:09.
Hungary are in all blue as they come forward. | :47:10. | :47:34.
Quick shot, but the save is made just off the post. It will return to | :47:35. | :47:47.
Hungary. Conquer it looking as comfortable as | :47:48. | :48:06.
they have in this match so far. We will have to do reload. Inside of 15 | :48:07. | :48:12.
seconds and just ten seconds remaining now. They will need to | :48:13. | :48:15.
work quickly. They were able to do that at the end of the first half. | :48:16. | :48:25.
Pijetlovic settled that one down. It is a major foul. | :48:26. | :48:47.
Serbia just off-loading and toying with his Hungarian defence, but they | :48:48. | :48:55.
are stripped of the ball. What looked to be the moment of truth in | :48:56. | :48:58.
front where they were going to release the shot, and they have | :48:59. | :49:03.
given it up, quite cheaply, really. Hungary looked really strong for | :49:04. | :49:09.
their lead. It is not a fluke by any stretch of imagination. | :49:10. | :49:23.
The save their made by the left hand of Pijetlovic. It settle things down | :49:24. | :49:27.
for his side. It was labelled for the inside of | :49:28. | :49:34.
the right post. It is advantage play for Hungary. | :49:35. | :49:57.
Serbia sensing an opportunity to try to win it back, but they will have | :49:58. | :50:03.
to relent. Still anticipating the shot. | :50:04. | :50:08.
It is that play from behind that is the quick whistle. Pijetlovic has | :50:09. | :50:17.
the support of his men back into play, and what a save he makes. He | :50:18. | :50:19.
was in a good position. It was his right arm this time. He | :50:20. | :50:32.
will get himself recorded with another save. He has been strong. | :50:33. | :50:46.
This, a chance to bring it within two. Serbia really need to make a | :50:47. | :50:54.
Right now in this third period. What a shot! It sizzled in from the left | :50:55. | :51:05.
hand of their number ten forward. That is Filipovic with the strike of | :51:06. | :51:07.
delivery towards the goal. Just what the doctor ordered for the | :51:08. | :51:16.
Serbians. This is a game that is changing. | :51:17. | :51:25.
That literally just blew the left-hand right past with the force | :51:26. | :51:33.
of the ball into the back of the Hungarian goal. | :51:34. | :51:46.
Filipovic a real linchpin in this one. | :51:47. | :51:55.
His second goal of the match. An opportunity now for the Hungarians | :51:56. | :52:05.
to start to be a little more strategic with a substitution. This | :52:06. | :52:17.
is getting into maybe a little bit of the tactical stage of the match. | :52:18. | :52:26.
It looked that way when it was four goals, the difference, but now back | :52:27. | :52:32.
to two. Filipovic looks for his best option to try to move it forward. He | :52:33. | :52:41.
has been patient. His team have now re-established themselves in the | :52:42. | :52:47.
offensive half of the field of play. The Serbians now looking encouraged. | :52:48. | :53:05.
Nagy did not need to make the save. The goal frame was wide enough to | :53:06. | :53:13.
keep that at bay. Each of these sequences up and back are very | :53:14. | :53:17.
instrumental in the final tally at the end of 32 minutes. | :53:18. | :53:30.
Back and forth, the appealing from the Hungarian coach and the exhale | :53:31. | :53:34.
of delight from the Serbian in goal. From the outside! Look at the divine | :53:35. | :53:46.
strike of the Serbian attack. It was a long range delivery. Cuk | :53:47. | :54:12.
has absolutely delivered a most impacting strike was Serbia. They | :54:13. | :54:15.
are within one and the game is changing. Milos Cuk has got his side | :54:16. | :54:25.
right within touching distance. This is a test for certain of the | :54:26. | :54:35.
mettle that the Hungarians have. Do they -- can they take the pressure? | :54:36. | :55:05.
They will have the benefit of an extra player and there will now be a | :55:06. | :55:12.
time-out called by the Hungarians. They will reload and discuss their | :55:13. | :55:18.
approach in the remaining portion of this third period. | :55:19. | :55:53.
Three-time Olympic gold medallist, Benedek. Leader of this team. This | :55:54. | :56:06.
is a sequence for Hungary in the open match of these real Olympics, | :56:07. | :56:11.
where they really need to be able to execute their game plan -- Rio | :56:12. | :56:17.
Olympics. A little bit of sunshine is coming across the water at the | :56:18. | :56:20.
Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio. Inside the last minutes, you know | :56:21. | :56:38.
when you see it there that that was a plan that didn't quite get done. | :56:39. | :56:44.
Everything in preparation for this shot was on the mark, but that is | :56:45. | :56:57.
heads up water polo. Now a time-out is called by the Serbians. They will | :56:58. | :57:01.
take advantage of a chance here to get back level and they have not | :57:02. | :57:05.
been level since the early stages of this match. They fell down quickly | :57:06. | :57:14.
with that opening sequence and this now is a challenge for Hungary. They | :57:15. | :57:24.
have enjoyed the spoils of being in a strong position throughout the | :57:25. | :57:28.
entirety of this match. What will be the story of this possession? | :57:29. | :57:41.
It was a quick possession and it was taken by Svivos to open up the | :57:42. | :57:59.
scoring. Serbia have been in the Trail in this match ever since. They | :58:00. | :58:04.
have a chance to level. They will await a good shot. | :58:05. | :58:10.
That effort was not quite potent enough, it just goes over the | :58:11. | :58:18.
crossbar and beyond it will beat Hungary trying to counter attack | :58:19. | :58:25.
late in this third period. They spin out of the defensive force of | :58:26. | :58:28.
Serbia, and have drawn the exclusion. | :58:29. | :58:33.
They took advantage. Hungary will take control once again and it is an | :58:34. | :58:39.
offensive strike. It means everything. The Hungarians | :58:40. | :59:11.
know it. Precious seconds counting down it has been turned over. The | :59:12. | :59:17.
whistle is blown. The official wanting to reassert that it is going | :59:18. | :59:29.
to be Nagy that will give it up. What a story to tell. A lead coming | :59:30. | :59:33.
into that second half almost evaporates for Hungary, but in the | :59:34. | :59:44.
end that important goal. ORE ODUBA: so, Hungary leading by 11 goals to | :59:45. | :59:49.
nine against Serbia who have just one more eight minute period to go | :59:50. | :59:52.
to try to close that gap or even go one ahead. This is a great way to | :59:53. | :59:58.
kick off our Olympics coverage, isn't it? A real batch. Absolutely. | :59:59. | :00:04.
In the middle of that game, he said this will tie the Hungarian resolve, | :00:05. | :00:09.
the way Serbia came back. They closed it back down to one and then | :00:10. | :00:12.
you saw Hungary proved they have that resolve. The second time into | :00:13. | :00:16.
quarters that Hungary have come and got a goal with seconds left and | :00:17. | :00:20.
just opened that gap up again a little bit. Other teams in this | :00:21. | :00:23.
tournament will beware in best thinking to themselves, this is | :00:24. | :00:26.
great, this is exactly what we wanted. These two, seven bells out | :00:27. | :00:30.
of each other in the first game of the tournament might make our lives | :00:31. | :00:34.
easier. Croatia and the USA are playing next, both looking for | :00:35. | :00:38.
medals. The longer this goes on, the tougher it is for them, the easier | :00:39. | :00:43.
for us. You've been really impressed with the goalkeeping in a | :00:44. | :00:44.
high-scoring game. It is such a tough sport to be a | :00:45. | :00:56.
goalkeeper in. The athleticism that you need, there is so much going on | :00:57. | :01:01.
around you, your movement is restricted, it is physical, and | :01:02. | :01:05.
sometimes you just get a bit lucky. It is all about positioning. If it | :01:06. | :01:09.
goes off your head and you didn't see it coming, it is still not then | :01:10. | :01:14.
the back of the net. Whatever it works, just get in the way of the | :01:15. | :01:19.
ball. We will be back with the fourth-quarter quickly. Let's update | :01:20. | :01:24.
you with what has been going on in the rowing and the men's single | :01:25. | :01:27.
sculls because Alan Campbell of Great Britain has been going in | :01:28. | :01:33.
that, he did well, qualified third fastest in his heat, meanwhile, the | :01:34. | :01:43.
reigning champion, Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand, qualified in first | :01:44. | :01:48.
place. We can go back to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre with Hungary | :01:49. | :01:56.
leading Serbia 11-9 in the water polo, and we rejoin Brent. | :01:57. | :02:09.
That is a small thing that counts for so much at the end of the match. | :02:10. | :02:17.
And with all things are the difference at world-class level -- | :02:18. | :02:26.
little things. They retain it, they cannot shoot it as yet. One more | :02:27. | :02:31.
time and there is an almighty struggle right in front of the | :02:32. | :02:37.
Serbian goal, and Serbia win it back. What a powerhouse of force | :02:38. | :02:50.
there. There is Mandic, defensively, doing an outstanding job against the | :02:51. | :02:58.
Hungarian forwards. The exclusion, the grasping on the back of the | :02:59. | :03:03.
player leading to the man advantage for Serbia, can they come back | :03:04. | :03:08.
within one? What a strike, as the Serbian pounce when given the | :03:09. | :03:13.
opportunity. Slobodan Nikic will Bolli that one, one-handed, into the | :03:14. | :03:20.
Hungarian gall, and all sorts of struggle. And the finish is richer | :03:21. | :03:29.
perfect, on the money. -- the Hungarian goal. That is the answer | :03:30. | :03:33.
to the late goal at the end of the third period. His first goal of | :03:34. | :03:42.
these Rio Olympics. And this has every chance of going either way, | :03:43. | :03:48.
still. It is a wrestling match, isn't it? It is nothing short of it. | :03:49. | :04:00.
When and how will the shot come? Those are the only questions. 20 | :04:01. | :04:11.
seconds on the scoring clock. To the outside, and they've scored, | :04:12. | :04:17.
Hungary, again, very comfortable with their captain, Denes Varga, the | :04:18. | :04:26.
29-year-old, delighted with his tally, and jubilant in celebration. | :04:27. | :04:31.
It is all happening in front. Hungarian with just enough strength | :04:32. | :04:35.
to keep control, and there was nothing that Pijetlovic could do | :04:36. | :04:57.
about that shot. This was no fluke. Hungary have scored first and they | :04:58. | :05:01.
have scored often. Saved again by the Hungarian is, and Nagy | :05:02. | :05:13.
encourages his team on. An emotional leader. And his team now all return | :05:14. | :05:21.
to offensive positions. This is the swing point, isn't it, to be able to | :05:22. | :05:30.
take the lead, three points. And the whistle in favour of Serbia. They | :05:31. | :05:43.
will take control of this ball. And all of the work, each stroke to get | :05:44. | :05:49.
back into an area into which best to defend. The Serbians need to | :05:50. | :05:55.
restructure and try to get into a better formation offensively. The | :05:56. | :06:09.
Hungarians penalised. Norbert Hosnyanszky has scored a couple of | :06:10. | :06:14.
key goals. Look at that goal, and the Serbians are still right on the | :06:15. | :06:19.
doorstep. Just crashed into the back of the goal of Nagy, and he cannot | :06:20. | :06:30.
extend to reach to that. That was like a judo Chop across the back | :06:31. | :06:36.
from the Serbian, and a perfect delivery. | :06:37. | :06:47.
But was Milos Cuk, getting the credit for that one. | :06:48. | :07:04.
It is Nikic who gets the record of the goal for Serbia. They are within | :07:05. | :07:12.
one and five minutes remaining in this half. You will see every trick | :07:13. | :07:19.
in the book from both of these sides to retain advantage, or to try and | :07:20. | :07:31.
regain it. Hungary, from the outside with that man advantage, they are in | :07:32. | :07:34.
a great position to shoot, they elect not to, they will be patient | :07:35. | :07:41.
and use this shot clock as much as the game clock. It is denied, and | :07:42. | :07:49.
the Serbians retain control. Coming back into the pool, you sense a | :07:50. | :07:58.
little bit of a momentum change. Pijetlovic just gets enough, the | :07:59. | :08:01.
fingertip touch the elevate the ball beyond the crossbar. And this, you | :08:02. | :08:12.
sense, is a game changing possession for the Serbians. And they know it! | :08:13. | :08:22.
It goes in two different directions before hitting the right post, and | :08:23. | :08:30.
Nagy may be more lucky than good in that particular sequence. Just | :08:31. | :08:35.
enough of a touch from the defender to deny the shot. The shot came in, | :08:36. | :08:44.
but it wasn't a clean one. And that is ever the difference. Another | :08:45. | :08:50.
opportunity for Hungary to re-establish a 2- goal lead. They | :08:51. | :08:54.
have given it up quite easily, and you can ill afford that at this | :08:55. | :09:05.
stage of the match. A turnover foul. And that will prove potentially | :09:06. | :09:10.
costly as Serbia right now do not need too many indications in which | :09:11. | :09:16.
to try and regain level pegging in this match. Outside that five metre | :09:17. | :09:36.
line. An exclusion foul against Svivos, and he will make his way out | :09:37. | :09:44.
of the pool. That was a major foul, three of them, and that has led to | :09:45. | :09:49.
his exclusion from the remaining portion of this match. The official | :09:50. | :09:56.
on the far side of the pool with the ball, awaiting clearance to return | :09:57. | :10:05.
to action, and he is buckled up and ready to go. Here are the Serbians | :10:06. | :10:11.
with the chance to level this match in the important finishing, business | :10:12. | :10:21.
end of the 32 minutes, as we work from the outside to the near the | :10:22. | :10:26.
shot expected at any moment, you will take it? The anticipation, | :10:27. | :10:35.
where will the delivery go? Inside that left post, and Filip Filipovic | :10:36. | :10:41.
has been illegal for the Serbians. The punishing left-handed, sizzling | :10:42. | :10:46.
stroke -- has been lethal for. And you see the work going on off of the | :10:47. | :10:52.
play, but this is an explosion of power. And Nagy is beaten clearly. | :10:53. | :11:03.
That man, triumphant, has levelled this at 12. Three goals from his | :11:04. | :11:13.
nine opportunities. He would have loved a more efficient return, but | :11:14. | :11:17.
you talk about big goals at the big time, and you need those, and Serbia | :11:18. | :11:27.
have just got one. That shot clock slipping away from Hungary. You feel | :11:28. | :11:34.
the change in the complexion of this game. It is choppy waters now for | :11:35. | :11:47.
Hungary. The long, extended arm defensively, and Serbia just | :11:48. | :11:57.
thrusting themselves in front of the Hungarian shooters. Every inch of | :11:58. | :11:59.
the Battle continues in front of the Serbian goal, and it will be | :12:00. | :12:05.
retained from the Hungarian study outside. They will push forward. | :12:06. | :12:12.
Moving the ball around, so much defensive work to stay aloft, and | :12:13. | :12:19.
strong and upright. Look at the shot, it is work, right around the | :12:20. | :12:27.
horn and Hungary have struck gold with a big one there. And that is a | :12:28. | :12:36.
massive arrival, to a 13th goal. My goodness. They work it around the | :12:37. | :12:49.
outside and the shot again, that ever dangerous left-handed strike | :12:50. | :12:57.
from Martin Ramos. He has been right on the money. And he delivers what | :12:58. | :13:02.
could be a decisive goal in this one. -- Vamos. That is his second | :13:03. | :13:10.
goal. Both of them have been memorable. One from a long distance | :13:11. | :13:19.
earlier in the first half, and now this one, late in the second. Serbia | :13:20. | :13:32.
winning the ball back after giving it up quite easily. They needed | :13:33. | :13:37.
that, and this game, ever in the balance. Varga giving over that | :13:38. | :13:50.
turnover -- that turnover foul. Serbia, from the outside. This is a | :13:51. | :13:58.
sequence in which they need to execute, they know it, and it is off | :13:59. | :14:05.
the bar. They can retain control, they have reloaded the 32nd shot | :14:06. | :14:06.
clock. -- the 30-2nd shot clock. It is a minute, and the countdown | :14:07. | :14:28.
continues. It is a 1- goal differential, and Hungary have done | :14:29. | :14:33.
just enough to keep it out, it is deflected onto the frame by Nagy, | :14:34. | :14:39.
and this could be decisive. Nagy with enough of a touch, and it goes | :14:40. | :14:45.
for the crossbar, and stays out of the Hungarian goal. And is that the | :14:46. | :14:50.
difference in this match, as the time-out is called, and a chance for | :14:51. | :14:53.
the Hungarian is to settle down the troops, as they will take this | :14:54. | :14:58.
possession, and as much as they would love to score, they do not add | :14:59. | :15:04.
up the ball easily, and allow a Serbian counter attack, and | :15:05. | :15:10.
instructions now coming in from Tibor Benedek. He is asserting the | :15:11. | :15:15.
plan for his side from the edge of the pool in the Maria Lenk Aquatics | :15:16. | :15:16.
Centre. An elite -- and a late counter | :15:17. | :15:47.
attack here from the Hungarians. Nagy substituted. In is his | :15:48. | :15:56.
counterpart. This is all about game management for the Hungarians. They | :15:57. | :16:01.
will just work this clock down, they have been doing a great job so far. | :16:02. | :16:06.
Inside of 30 seconds of the game clock and is there something | :16:07. | :16:09.
miraculous from Serbia to take control back? | :16:10. | :16:17.
So much going on right now, the whistle is blown and the officials | :16:18. | :16:24.
reassert themselves in the closing stages of this match. That was the | :16:25. | :16:30.
injury to Nagy, leading to the substitution. He gets some work on | :16:31. | :16:40.
the sidelines here. All that goes on under the water that you do not see. | :16:41. | :16:47.
What a tremendous exertion of energy is a water polo match, and | :16:48. | :16:51.
particularly this one will stop it has been tense and it has been the | :16:52. | :16:56.
Serbians under all manner of pressure as they are expected as the | :16:57. | :17:01.
favourites. They are down by one and this is their last formulation of a | :17:02. | :17:04.
game plan to try to level this one, try to walk away with at least one | :17:05. | :17:06.
point from this match. Great shots here of the closing | :17:07. | :17:24.
stages of Pool A action in the men's water polo. The Hungarians have a | :17:25. | :17:29.
slim one goal advantage, but the Serbians have a chance. | :17:30. | :17:35.
See if they can get themselves a tie from this match. A shot off the bar | :17:36. | :17:42.
and it will be a whistle, it is indicated by the official and the | :17:43. | :17:47.
Hungarians will retreat, the Serbians will maintain possession. | :17:48. | :17:56.
What a finish their! We are dead level and a baker's dozen apiece. 13 | :17:57. | :18:03.
on the board and four seconds remaining. Serbia have looked to | :18:04. | :18:07.
have done the impossible, but it is the improbable, as they are the | :18:08. | :18:16.
expected, probable gold medallists. They showed how capable they are as | :18:17. | :18:22.
the powerful delivery once more from the hammerhead of Filipovic has | :18:23. | :18:27.
brought a fourth goal from him personally today. The 13 for his | :18:28. | :18:32.
team and time will slip away in this match. That is where the match will | :18:33. | :18:42.
stay. 13 goals apiece for Serbia and Hungary in men's water polo in Pool | :18:43. | :18:47.
A action. That was not the anticipated results. The Hungarians | :18:48. | :18:51.
are pleased, but they were in a great position to put claim to all | :18:52. | :19:01.
of the points in this opening match. That's the way it will finish. | :19:02. | :19:07.
Serbia and Hungary tie and they have a draw at 13 apiece in the men's | :19:08. | :19:09.
water polo. ORE ODUBA: what a way to kick off | :19:10. | :19:19.
the water polo tournament. Hungary and Serbia shared the spoils. | :19:20. | :19:25.
Possibly not the result is that those two would have liked, but a | :19:26. | :19:30.
great result for the rest of the competition. Serbia odds on for the | :19:31. | :19:34.
gold medal, but they had work to do, showing great resolve in that game. | :19:35. | :19:38.
There is more for you water polo fans out there, because if you go to | :19:39. | :19:43.
the BBC sport website or use the act, in about 25 minutes, we will | :19:44. | :19:49.
watch the... Oh, no, that is them now! Forget 25 minutes, team USA, | :19:50. | :19:55.
Beijing silver medallists are coming on right now. They are taking on the | :19:56. | :20:01.
Olympic champions, Croatia. You can see that battle royale over on the | :20:02. | :20:04.
BBC sport website or on the BBC is bought at. Coming up here on BBC | :20:05. | :20:09.
Four... We are zipping over to Copacabana | :20:10. | :20:20.
shortly for our first taste of Beach Volleyball Arena. Italy take on | :20:21. | :20:28.
Austria in the men's competition. Then another first, never before has | :20:29. | :20:33.
rugby sevens been contested at the Olympic Games. France and Spain have | :20:34. | :20:37.
the honour of opening the women's event. After that, we will stay on | :20:38. | :20:42.
site at the Diadora to see Ireland take on five-time champions in India | :20:43. | :20:52.
-- India. Fresh from her victory, Heather Watson starts her Olympic | :20:53. | :20:59.
singles campaign. We will see that before we return to the man's | :21:00. | :21:03.
hockey. Maximum points against Belgium is the plan for Great | :21:04. | :21:06.
Britain, aiming to get their campaign off to the perfect start. | :21:07. | :21:12.
And we will get a first look at our guys in the gymnastics. Matt | :21:13. | :21:17.
Whitlock and his band of brothers one bronze four years ago. They will | :21:18. | :21:23.
have their eye on the next step up at least. The rest of our afternoon | :21:24. | :21:29.
is looking at this -- looking like this. Next up, beach volleyball. | :21:30. | :22:03.
Things have really come to life here on the Olympic Park. You can see | :22:04. | :22:09.
people are running. They are running to get to their destination. Why? I | :22:10. | :22:15.
don't know. Some are going to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, but most | :22:16. | :22:18.
of them are heading this way to what looks like the Aquatic Centre. We | :22:19. | :22:22.
are going to see plenty of swimming kicking off later on this afternoon | :22:23. | :22:27.
from about 1pm our time, 4pm your time or five o'clock, I should say. | :22:28. | :22:31.
I'm going to get my maths wrong over the course of these two weeks. Let's | :22:32. | :22:36.
had to Beach Volleyball Arena sports synonymous with this country, not | :22:37. | :22:39.
least because the first ever World Championships was held here in Rio | :22:40. | :22:45.
and also with 11 medals, our host country are the most decorated in | :22:46. | :22:54.
Olympic history. It will be a popular sport. Let's check in on the | :22:55. | :22:59.
12,000 seater arena on Copacabana Beach. The world number one pair, | :23:00. | :23:03.
the Brazilians, they will take to the sand in about one hour, maybe | :23:04. | :23:07.
less. You will be able to see them on BBC One, I should think. The | :23:08. | :23:12.
curtain raiser will see Italy take on Austria. We will join it in the | :23:13. | :23:18.
first game. Best of three. It is the best of 21, and if they decide is | :23:19. | :23:25.
needed, first to 15. We will see Italy taking on Austria. Italy | :23:26. | :23:32.
currently lead 12-8. Over to our commentator. | :23:33. | :23:37.
Giving the players an opportunity to have a bit of a chat and think about | :23:38. | :23:42.
their strategies and how they have settled in to the first set. | :23:43. | :23:55.
Hearing the Italians having a bit of conversation. | :23:56. | :24:27.
Beautiful scenes here at Copacabana beach. Magnificent 15,000 seat | :24:28. | :24:33.
stadium. Found the space they're perfectly, | :24:34. | :24:53.
Alexander Horst. Now it will be his serve. | :24:54. | :25:10.
Another point to the Austrians. Taking back that score now, only | :25:11. | :25:21.
three points the difference. It is amazing, the | :25:22. | :25:33.
Doppler got to the dock, couldn't quite get it over. | :25:34. | :26:04.
Finished off again by Ranghieri. Great blocking ability at the net, | :26:05. | :26:53.
that's for sure. Known as the net patrol, Ranghieri, | :26:54. | :27:03.
and that is why. Oh, beautiful block at the front of | :27:04. | :27:26.
the Court by Ranghieri. Knows how important that point was. Really | :27:27. | :27:33.
stretching the lead out now, 16-11. A really good point that, in | :27:34. | :27:36.
general, from the Italians. Not only that block, but Carambula diving to | :27:37. | :27:46.
keep the ball in play. Great block at the front of the | :27:47. | :28:07.
court. Ranghieri is really coming into his own here. | :28:08. | :28:19.
17-11 now to Italy as the ball hurtles up in the air again. | :28:20. | :28:30.
The point has been given to Austria. Maybe Ranghieri going a little too | :28:31. | :28:37.
far and over into the opposition's court. | :28:38. | :28:45.
Maybe just clipping the net on the way down. It was a close call, but | :28:46. | :28:50.
it has gone to Austria. Straight off the set. That was a | :28:51. | :28:57.
powerful hit. Ranghieri is really taking control | :28:58. | :29:06.
of the skies. Dominant in the air. See what the Austrians can do now to | :29:07. | :29:30.
get back into this first set. Good momentum for Austria. They need | :29:31. | :30:04.
it right now. The Austrians point the finger at | :30:05. | :30:54.
the Italians. It will go to the challenge referee. The challenge on | :30:55. | :31:05.
the block touch. It could save them the set point here. As it stands, | :31:06. | :31:12.
Italy 20, Austria 14, here is a replay. Good luck calling that 1! | :31:13. | :31:31.
I'm glad it is not my job. That is all I'm saying. Very difficult 1 to | :31:32. | :31:45.
call. Unsuccessful challenge. This is set point to Italy, 20-14, and it | :31:46. | :31:52.
will be the man born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to take the serve, Adrian | :31:53. | :32:01.
Carambula. They have called a time-out. They were all set to go. | :32:02. | :32:25.
Both the Italians living in Rome, Adrian Carambula born in Montevideo, | :32:26. | :32:39.
moved to the US when he was 13, but started representing the Italians at | :32:40. | :32:42.
beach volleyball through his Italian grandmother. Now, Austria have got | :32:43. | :32:52.
to go out and try to save set point on the sands of Copacabana. | :32:53. | :33:07.
So, first set, first blood to Italy, and we are going to join the | :33:08. | :33:16.
coverage now with the Italians leading in the second game as well, | :33:17. | :33:21.
the score now 11-7. Let's rejoin Peter Blackburn. | :33:22. | :33:36.
The crowd love it, don't they? Just going wide, there. They will have | :33:37. | :33:45.
picked up a few points, with a handy 5-point lead. Great Birds Eye view | :33:46. | :33:55.
from the sky ball. Great defence. Starting to run away with it, the | :33:56. | :34:14.
Italian pair, 13-7, took the first set 21-14. It is that unique style | :34:15. | :34:22.
they have, which challenges some of the most experienced players in the | :34:23. | :34:27.
game. The Austrians just finding it hard to control. Here we go again. | :34:28. | :34:55.
Great rally, and a great finish again by Ranghieri, both players | :34:56. | :35:07.
working hard to control the ball, great movement round the court. | :35:08. | :35:22.
No stopping shots like that, straight down into the sand. | :35:23. | :35:45.
Setting themselves points targets, almost, the Italians, as they take | :35:46. | :35:54.
to the court once again. They are brimming with confidence, they are | :35:55. | :36:01.
running out there, ready to go. The assistant setting up those lines | :36:02. | :36:12.
again. They have got a very handy lead, 14-7. The sky ball again. | :36:13. | :36:24.
Ranghieri at the front court, taking the opportunity when the ball was | :36:25. | :36:39.
short. 15-7, now. Now, the crowd starting to get into this, cheering | :36:40. | :36:52.
as the sky ball drops. The Austrians were here in the world tour event | :36:53. | :36:57.
earlier this year and they took a sample of the sand and padded | :36:58. | :37:03.
replicated in Vienna. They have been practising on the Rio sand back in | :37:04. | :37:07.
Vienna. Not helping them so far, though. Lovely control at the front | :37:08. | :37:21.
court again from Carambula. He has played so well, look at that, lovely | :37:22. | :37:23.
control. The Austrian pair needed that. From | :37:24. | :37:53.
the centre of the court. They didn't need that, though. Straight into the | :37:54. | :38:00.
net. 17-9 now to the Italians, if they get 21 points they win the | :38:01. | :38:08.
match. It is only a pool game but what a way to start. He tried the | :38:09. | :38:17.
regular serve, there, Carambula. He is not conventional, that is for | :38:18. | :38:18.
sure. The service points in this game, | :38:19. | :38:37.
that is just stretching the pressure on the server. Sometimes, it just | :38:38. | :38:48.
brings out the errors. Ranghieri tends to just nudge it over the net, | :38:49. | :38:54.
so he can then get in for the block. He has done fantastic, it is almost | :38:55. | :38:59.
like serve and volley in tennis for Ranghieri, he gets ready for the | :39:00. | :39:03.
spike, and he can get there immediately to block it. I think | :39:04. | :39:20.
they are enjoying themselves! That was a nice finish from Austria. The | :39:21. | :39:31.
question is, it is a big gap that they have got to pick up. And little | :39:32. | :39:40.
time and points in which to do it. Italy, two points away from winning | :39:41. | :39:55.
the match. They picked up that one. They only need a good run here. | :39:56. | :40:08.
Carambula brings up match point. With that strike down the line. Not | :40:09. | :40:14.
bad, eight match points. Second match point for the Italians. | :40:15. | :40:48.
Oh, there it is! What a way to finish the match, with an entirely | :40:49. | :40:56.
unconventional... Everybody thought Carambula was going to set up | :40:57. | :41:00.
Ranghieri and he just popped it into the empty court. The Italians are | :41:01. | :41:09.
celebrating, victory in two straight sets, gives them confidence in the | :41:10. | :41:14.
first round, the preliminaries, the first step to the last 16 they have | :41:15. | :41:20.
come into the competition in good form, two wins in the world tour | :41:21. | :41:28.
this year, in Turkey and in Qatar and they continue that form of a | :41:29. | :41:31.
reasonably comfortable victory, you have to say. Everyone thinks that he | :41:32. | :41:37.
is going to set up Ranghieri, and he just nudges it over the net. Great | :41:38. | :41:41.
start of the competition in the men's beach volleyball for Italy | :41:42. | :41:48.
beating Austria 2-0. Hopefully we will see more of that on our | :41:49. | :41:52.
programme. The women's is still to come. We're having a great time here | :41:53. | :41:58.
on the park. We are next going to show the rugby sevens which is | :41:59. | :42:06.
taking place 20 kilometres north, at Diadora. France taking up Spain | :42:07. | :42:09.
next, then Great Britain against the hosts, Brazil, that will be about | :42:10. | :42:15.
4pm your time on BBC One. My watch says 20 to 11! Before they came out | :42:16. | :42:22.
to Brazil, the Great Britain girls caught up with my colleague Charlie | :42:23. | :42:32.
Stayt to experience their training. Sevens is a game of speed, pace and | :42:33. | :42:37.
agility, and it is also about the power. The game is brutal, to be | :42:38. | :42:48.
honest. It is fast paced. You have all of the normal bits of the XV | :42:49. | :42:54.
game, the compact, but they are all a bit smaller. You have to be super | :42:55. | :42:59.
fit to play sevens. Some people think about rugby players and they | :43:00. | :43:04.
think about bulk, maybe. Look at me, definitely not! You are really quite | :43:05. | :43:12.
slight. Lots of the sevens players are quite slim. It is more of a fast | :43:13. | :43:17.
game, it is about fitness. You don't have to be big to play sevens. In | :43:18. | :43:25.
your sport, what is the big rivalry? I don't know, maybe Wales and | :43:26. | :43:29.
England. But that is not relevant on this occasion, because you are all | :43:30. | :43:36.
in one team. We came in and bonded so well with all the girls. | :43:37. | :43:45.
Obviously you have rivalry between England, Scotland and Wales and we | :43:46. | :43:50.
wondered what the interaction in the squad would be like, but everybody | :43:51. | :43:53.
has accepted everybody and they are all great friends, so that helps the | :43:54. | :43:58.
coaches a lot. Rugby sevens is brand-new to this year's Olympic | :43:59. | :44:02.
Games. It is a wonderful opportunity for the sport to be seen by millions | :44:03. | :44:08.
worldwide, and Team GB are really up for the challenge. We are building | :44:09. | :44:13.
to the Olympics at the end of the year, we have won a tournament, we | :44:14. | :44:18.
have been further couple of times so the girls are in a really good | :44:19. | :44:22.
place. We put all the planning in place and execute the best of our | :44:23. | :44:25.
ability, then we have got a great chance to medal. It is such a great, | :44:26. | :44:32.
inclusive sport, to be put alongside the great events of the Olympics. Do | :44:33. | :44:40.
you think you might get gold? We are just fine to get there at the | :44:41. | :44:51.
moment. Every time I see Charlie taking those hits, it hurts me! Now, | :44:52. | :45:01.
we are going to head over to the Diadoro Stadium and join Rob. You | :45:02. | :45:09.
see the rugby sevens year after year, it is about time that the | :45:10. | :45:13.
Olympic audience got to enjoy this. They are in for a treat, aren't | :45:14. | :45:18.
they? Yes, perfect format for the Olympic Games, high-energy and a | :45:19. | :45:27.
feast of action. In the women's, Australia are the reigning world | :45:28. | :45:30.
Series champions but New Zealand have won the most times, three | :45:31. | :45:34.
times. Is that the final we are expecting see? It'll be hard pushed | :45:35. | :45:39.
to be different to that. New Zealand are the dominant force physically. | :45:40. | :45:45.
They so imposing. Australia set the standard with amazing passing skills | :45:46. | :45:49.
to shift the ball to stay away from the sizeable New Zealand players, | :45:50. | :45:53.
but in a game such as this, the team plays such a part. Sometimes it | :45:54. | :45:58.
comes down to being a little bit bigger, and it will be a good | :45:59. | :46:01.
contest between those two body can't write off Team GB and Canada. | :46:02. | :46:07.
Team GB are led by Emily scarring. In England, anyway, they qualified | :46:08. | :46:16.
fourth. I be in with a chance of a medal? Yes. They have consistency | :46:17. | :46:21.
and playing together. 11 of the players are from the English setter. | :46:22. | :46:25.
We throw in a Welsh girl, an English coach, a Welsh coach coming | :46:26. | :46:28.
together, and they have a long shot at this. They have been together for | :46:29. | :46:31.
six or seven months preparing for this one event as well as going | :46:32. | :46:35.
through the whole series. They are well-placed, absolutely physically | :46:36. | :46:37.
on point and are going to embrace this tournament and showcase their | :46:38. | :46:42.
skills, as well. Looking forward to seeing them later. What about France | :46:43. | :46:46.
and Spain? 50 versus eighth seed. You expect France to take this? I | :46:47. | :46:51.
would do. Are part-time players. Coming together from a group of | :46:52. | :47:01.
students and nurses. They also have the only female firefighter. They | :47:02. | :47:04.
are against sizeable people and they throw their weight around. That's | :47:05. | :47:08.
for sure. With weight and speed it will be on fire at the Diadora. | :47:09. | :47:13.
Thank you very much. The pitch down at Diadora is looking in pristine | :47:14. | :47:24.
condition. -- Diadora. The first in the history of the games. The Team | :47:25. | :47:31.
GB campaign pins race against Brazil. The women arrived around | :47:32. | :47:37.
Wednesday last week and I got to catch up with them and the athletes' | :47:38. | :47:41.
village. They are really excited. If you want a little locator, or a | :47:42. | :47:50.
general one, the athletes' village is in that direction. | :47:51. | :47:52.
The athletes village for around 10,000 athletes from more than 200 | :47:53. | :47:56.
countries around the world. This is their first step towards winning an | :47:57. | :48:02.
Olympic. Not least for our friends, Team GB towers. Let's see how they | :48:03. | :48:03.
are getting on. Hello. Got the shot. Rugby sevens girls are | :48:04. | :48:23.
in the house. They seem in pretty good spirits. Why wouldn't they be? | :48:24. | :48:27.
They have union jack deckchairs down there. I love what you've done with | :48:28. | :48:34.
the place. The great thing about an Olympic villages you pretty much get | :48:35. | :48:37.
a bare space and it is your allotment to do what you like with. | :48:38. | :48:44.
Who let Mark in up there? Give us wave. Good to see you. Don't you | :48:45. | :48:49.
have work to do? Brilliant, OK. We will see you in a jiffy. Spirits | :48:50. | :48:54.
seem really good. Miller it is a great buzz, everyone is really | :48:55. | :48:59.
excited and pleased to be here. Welcome to Rio. How are you finding | :49:00. | :49:04.
it? Really good. The place is amazing. We're getting started in a | :49:05. | :49:07.
few days and it has come round quick. We're looking forward to it. | :49:08. | :49:11.
We will see you down there, take care. What's great about the village | :49:12. | :49:18.
is that if you ever get lost, just follow the flags. Check it out. | :49:19. | :49:23.
Canada back there looking loud and proud and taking up that tower | :49:24. | :49:26.
block. Over year, we've got the Scandinavian quarter, including | :49:27. | :49:32.
Denmark, Finland and Sweden, who are very welcoming. Over here, we have | :49:33. | :49:38.
Portugal down low and up top, Slovenia feeling the love. Very | :49:39. | :49:45.
good. That is what it is all about. Bring on the great. It's good on the | :49:46. | :49:56.
tush. That's lovely. Out you go, thank you. I'm sure you're hoping | :49:57. | :50:01.
this is a spot that will get used quite a lot by the Team GB | :50:02. | :50:05.
contingent. Yes, we have set it up with 12 to 15 beds. We will probably | :50:06. | :50:09.
have over 10,000 minutes worth of treatment in a day as we get into | :50:10. | :50:14.
the Games, so all the sports are encouraged to use it. This way. Heh. | :50:15. | :50:22.
Look, there's a person in here. There's a person hiding. You never | :50:23. | :50:25.
know who you'll find. You never know. Hello? OK. There they are. | :50:26. | :50:33.
Good to see you. I have to ask you about these guys. Look at them. It | :50:34. | :50:38.
is your team. Your Olympic Rio 2016 team. It is a tight group here. We | :50:39. | :50:45.
train and compete together. This is our sixth trip out here now as the | :50:46. | :50:50.
Olympic squad, so we have bonded really well and so far we haven't | :50:51. | :50:56.
had any major issues. All right coming here are. What about... I've | :50:57. | :51:03.
got two. Do you mind if I...? It has been changed today. And now tainted, | :51:04. | :51:10.
I'm afraid. If it's anything like London, you will probably see a lot | :51:11. | :51:15.
of athletes with these flying low. Team GB will be taking those bed | :51:16. | :51:20.
sheets home with them. We shall see, we shall see. There you have it, the | :51:21. | :51:26.
village in all its glory. And by the sounds of it, according to the | :51:27. | :51:30.
athletes, Team GB is definitely ready for Alexander Horst. | :51:31. | :51:39.
I promise not to make a habit of laying in Team GB beds during the | :51:40. | :51:47.
course of this games. We will head off to the Diadora now, because the | :51:48. | :51:51.
shooting is set to give us the first gold medal of the games. Four years | :51:52. | :51:58.
ago, exactly that, it happened in the ten metre women's air rifle. The | :51:59. | :52:04.
honour went to China. China went on to win seven shooting medals during | :52:05. | :52:12.
the games, but who will take the top step in the first of the | :52:13. | :52:17.
championships? The American is currently leading the championship. | :52:18. | :52:21.
Let's go to the National shooting Centre just now and as we approach | :52:22. | :52:26.
the closing stages, enjoying our meditator, Richard Drew. -- joining | :52:27. | :52:31.
our commentator. Keeping calm, shooting, sometimes | :52:32. | :52:44.
they say between heartbeats. Sometimes the heartbeat starts to | :52:45. | :52:46.
race and just about harming that down. It is that concentration, | :52:47. | :52:53.
block everything out. Try not to look at the monitor in front of them | :52:54. | :52:54.
to know what the score is. 10.3 is good, but could do with that | :52:55. | :53:17.
10.8 to get into second. Not allowed to load it ahead of the jury. That | :53:18. | :53:32.
is first and second. Very, very tight. Two more shops to see who | :53:33. | :53:34.
will take bronze. Well, it is Thrasher's gold medal to | :53:35. | :54:15.
lose. What a story that would be. Particularly managing to beat the | :54:16. | :54:19.
very strong Chinese. This is to decide bronze. | :54:20. | :54:39.
These two equal. Whoever scores higher here... | :54:40. | :54:50.
And 9.8 from Yi. Goodness me, the defending Olympic champion could get | :54:51. | :55:02.
bronze. 10.8, excellent under pressure. It is confirmed, she had | :55:03. | :55:09.
the gold, of in London. Looking to beat the first ten metre air rifle | :55:10. | :55:15.
athlete to take two golds. It is not to be, and Yi Siling takes third and | :55:16. | :55:17.
takes the bronze. Such an accomplished athlete. That | :55:18. | :55:32.
is another medal for her to add to that London gold. Had to give up | :55:33. | :55:40.
shooting in 2004 because of the cost, her coach promised to cover | :55:41. | :55:43.
expenses and I'm sure they are delighted with another medal for Yi | :55:44. | :55:49.
Siling from the People's Republic of China. Two more shops to decide who | :55:50. | :55:55.
takes gold. If Thrasher keeps calm, cool, and shooting like she has, she | :55:56. | :56:02.
should be OK. However, she hasn't shot in the nines since... She has | :56:03. | :56:09.
only shot one and that was her second shot of this whole condition. | :56:10. | :56:15.
Since then, it has been in the tens. Can she continue in that great form? | :56:16. | :56:32.
10.5 solid, that will see her good. Yi Siling needed to do something | :56:33. | :56:47.
spectacular. She took care time, but she has equalled it. Unless | :56:48. | :56:51.
something extraordinary happens to Thrasher, surely the American will | :56:52. | :56:57.
take gold. She really was not on the radar. Packed into this Diadora | :56:58. | :57:06.
venue to see what will happen. Last shot of this women's ten metres air | :57:07. | :57:09.
rifle. It all comes down to this. One more | :57:10. | :57:23.
shot to decide who takes gold, who takes silver. | :57:24. | :57:30.
She has a crush on, Thrasher. Let's see what she can do here. She looks | :57:31. | :57:42.
so calm. 10.4 should be enough. Look at the smile now and the exhalation | :57:43. | :57:51.
of breath. Du still concentrating. Can she finish in style? 10.1, it is | :57:52. | :57:58.
good but not good enough. We have our first gold medallist of the Rio | :57:59. | :58:04.
Olympics and it is Thrasher, just 19 and a half years of age. She has | :58:05. | :58:10.
surprised everyone to take gold here in Rio. | :58:11. | :58:19.
ORE ODUBA: you saw that puff of air coming out of Thrasher. A little | :58:20. | :58:22.
sigh of relief. She is the new Olympic champion in the women's air | :58:23. | :58:26.
rifle ten metre. The first gold of the games goes to America. Let's | :58:27. | :58:31.
look at our very first medal table, shall we? It makes fantastic reading | :58:32. | :58:36.
for the USA. There they are, sitting proudly atop the table fangs to | :58:37. | :58:41.
Thrasher's gold. Two medals for China with the defending champion | :58:42. | :58:48.
ORE ODUBA: -- Yi Siling winning bronze. Du got silver. Everyone else | :58:49. | :58:56.
has catching up to do. We are up and running. We have medals. We are | :58:57. | :59:01.
going to stay here right now because it is time to kick off the rugby | :59:02. | :59:07.
sevens tournament. It is its Olympic debut at Rio 2016 and everybody who | :59:08. | :59:13.
is lucky to have a ticket is really in for a treat. The man kick-off | :59:14. | :59:18.
next week. It is the women starting things today and for the next three | :59:19. | :59:22.
days. Let's see how the team's matchup in the women's competition. | :59:23. | :59:27.
12 teams broken down into three pools of four with the top two and | :59:28. | :59:34.
the best two third placed teams going on. Anything than the last | :59:35. | :59:38.
eight would be disappointed or France and Spain. They opening the | :59:39. | :59:43.
competition. Let's see you can take the spoils in the very first sevens | :59:44. | :59:47.
game of the games in the company of Sir Clive Woodward and Eddie Butler. | :59:48. | :00:03.
COMMENTATOR: Women's rugby sevens, never played here before, but it | :00:04. | :00:10.
takes its place here in Rio. We are quite a long way upcountry. It is | :00:11. | :00:17.
France playing Spain, the favourites. Good morning, Sir Clive | :00:18. | :00:25.
Woodward. It is wonderful to be here, wonderful for the first | :00:26. | :00:35.
Olympic Games, and away we go. The referee is Amy Pert of Australia. | :00:36. | :00:41.
Spain have the first kick in rugby sevens at the Olympics, and it is | :00:42. | :00:52.
well taken. The captain of France is one of the speedsters on the | :00:53. | :00:58.
outside. The normal rugby laws apply, of course there are reduced | :00:59. | :01:04.
numbers, from 15 down to seven. We have scrums, line-outs, rocks, | :01:05. | :01:07.
mauls, and a knock-on, as we saw there. It is a shame, France will be | :01:08. | :01:16.
disappointed because that was a real chance. Spain are ranked eighth in | :01:17. | :01:28.
the world. Three pools, four teams in each. Winners, runners-up, they | :01:29. | :01:35.
go through automatically, and the best two third placed teams. So even | :01:36. | :01:39.
if you lose there is the chance to grab one of the first-place spots. | :01:40. | :01:51.
It's a penalty to France. That's a shame, because Vanessa real workers | :01:52. | :02:01.
-- Ana Vanessa Rial was posed... Something has moved from the 15 | :02:02. | :02:04.
aside into the seven side game. A small knock-on. Again, the | :02:05. | :02:10.
importance of the scrum is to get a quick and clean ball away. The | :02:11. | :02:15.
halfbacks were putting one another under pressure, a better scrum from | :02:16. | :02:22.
the French there. Shannon Isa. -- Shannon Izar, the | :02:23. | :02:38.
first outbreak with good cover from Spain. Marina Bravo Bragado, and | :02:39. | :02:47.
France, is this going to be the first try in sevens Olympic rugby? | :02:48. | :02:50.
It is. France scored the first try. Try for France! Marjorie Mayans | :02:51. | :03:06.
scored the first try in the Olympic Games for France, it's a wonderful | :03:07. | :03:11.
try from the French. Showing typical French handling skills with a lot of | :03:12. | :03:16.
movement. These kicks are important, and a great tribe from Marjorie | :03:17. | :03:21.
Mayans. I don't know but she is called Queen of the tackles, she is | :03:22. | :03:26.
a big tackle, but what an achievement for her. The first lady | :03:27. | :03:30.
to score a try in the Olympic Games. Wonderful from France. There is an | :03:31. | :03:34.
injury down here... One of the slight changes from 15s to sevens | :03:35. | :03:47.
rugby. The team that scores restarts with the kick-off. Pauline Biscarat. | :03:48. | :03:59.
France have made a replacement. Restarts are everything, when you | :04:00. | :04:05.
score committee give the ball away. In the kick-off, it's whether the | :04:06. | :04:14.
French can restart this from Horta's kick. It may have been Pauline | :04:15. | :04:19.
Biscarat that score... Spain are on the move, France are aggressive. | :04:20. | :04:28.
Pauline Biscarat again. A switch of play. The way it comes to deduct | :04:29. | :04:40.
that was good from Ribero Garcia. Cannot take the scrum half out of | :04:41. | :04:49.
play. That was quickly taken by Elisabet Martinez, and a small | :04:50. | :04:56.
knock-on. That was a shame from the Spanish point of view, a little bit | :04:57. | :05:01.
panicked there EU just had to hold onto the ball. The pass is on, she | :05:02. | :05:07.
panics a bit, and a is given. France get the all-important possession in | :05:08. | :05:13.
this game. It's early days in the tournament. | :05:14. | :05:17.
At the Deodoro Stadium, not fooled by any means, but -- not fall by any | :05:18. | :05:26.
means. But it is a long way from Rio, among the hills in a huge | :05:27. | :05:31.
military encampment. Equestrian is up here, slalom, | :05:32. | :05:35.
canoeing, hockey. And, this rugby stadium. Biscarat takes it quickly | :05:36. | :05:52.
for France... On the wide outside. Lina Guerin manages the off-load. | :05:53. | :06:03.
REFEREE: It is a tackle assist. It's a penalty to France. | :06:04. | :06:13.
The set play... I watched the French training in the | :06:14. | :06:19.
mountains in France, they will be fit. They did a lot of set play work | :06:20. | :06:22.
against Team GB. This is a chance. It is going to be a try | :06:23. | :06:35.
for Lina Guerin. Great set play, moving the ball up to Lina Guerin, | :06:36. | :06:44.
scoring the second try. The width of the game here, there is | :06:45. | :06:50.
too much pace here for the French team. | :06:51. | :06:50.
It is a wonderful try. All kicks in rugby sevens are | :06:51. | :07:14.
drop-kicks, conversions. A good effort from wide out, that was an | :07:15. | :07:20.
early over. France are leading by 12-0. Seven minutes each way. If | :07:21. | :07:28.
that does not sound much, it is exhausting! It's an array big game, | :07:29. | :07:36.
this. Fitness really comes in handy, these girls have put a lot of | :07:37. | :07:41.
training into this, to get ready for today. Biscarat starts. | :07:42. | :07:52.
Here is a little variation, the kick | :07:53. | :07:55.
ahead and it is well taken. Spain are on the move. Martin is in | :07:56. | :08:04.
possession, that was good from Vanessa real, the scrum-half. -- Ana | :08:05. | :08:10.
Vanessa Rial. It's a penalty to Spain. Quickly | :08:11. | :08:37.
taken, and we are off again. There we go, half-time, France 12-0. | :08:38. | :08:49.
An interesting first half, I think that it's a bit more physical than | :08:50. | :08:57.
the Spanish team, the Spanish team have seven players in the squad over | :08:58. | :09:01.
the age of 30. They looked fit enough but | :09:02. | :09:05.
physicality, especially at the breakdown, there were a couple of | :09:06. | :09:08.
turnovers and France court two good tries. They should be pleased, | :09:09. | :09:14.
France are ranked fifth, Spain eighth. As you can see. The Spanish | :09:15. | :09:21.
girls kept going for the Olympics, it was announced a few years ago. | :09:22. | :09:26.
Many of them were on the brink of retirement, and yet, they came and | :09:27. | :09:31.
delayed the decision because the chance to come here to the Rio | :09:32. | :09:35.
Olympics. That applies across the board in the men's and women's game. | :09:36. | :09:52.
Two tries from France, the second by Lina Guerin. The coach of Spain, and | :09:53. | :10:06.
the French coach has been there six years, from the start. Keeping the | :10:07. | :10:10.
team together. You have to remember France were the Six Nations | :10:11. | :10:14.
champions this year, on the 15 aside game, a lot of players were involved | :10:15. | :10:21.
in that at the Six Nations. But you have a very experienced coach here. | :10:22. | :10:26.
Just coming off... A few players limping around, it is tough out | :10:27. | :10:29.
there, in the heat and tough physically. The Spanish have put on | :10:30. | :10:33.
a good show. They want to win this, France have | :10:34. | :10:38.
two tries, they put on a pretty good show. | :10:39. | :11:00.
Pauline Biscarat should start the second half, France are leading 12-0 | :11:01. | :11:08.
Spain, the restarts are important but that is easy enough for Spain to | :11:09. | :11:11.
reclaim. Barbara Pla, taking it into contact. | :11:12. | :11:32.
That's a penalty against Spain. Spain off their feet at the | :11:33. | :11:38.
breakdown. We are going to have a line-out. Interesting tactics, I | :11:39. | :11:44.
think they want a breather. Coming to the line-out. As long as they win | :11:45. | :11:50.
it, that was a good call, but in rugby sevens you don't see that | :11:51. | :11:54.
often, 40 yards out and then you go to a line-out, it's a bit of a | :11:55. | :11:58.
lottery but hopefully France can win it and make the right decision. | :11:59. | :12:09.
Three in the line-out for France... Well taken. It's a chance for Lina | :12:10. | :12:17.
Guerin on the outside, it is the break... Carolyn the darkness. | :12:18. | :12:32.
-- Caroline Ladagnous, a great try. A very powerful runner. You can see | :12:33. | :12:43.
when she gets the ball on the outside, with Elodie Guiglion on. | :12:44. | :12:46.
That is a really good try. You have to defend well, with people up | :12:47. | :12:53.
against players of this pace and power. | :12:54. | :12:59.
That was excellent, that conversion from Pauline Biscarat. France are | :13:00. | :13:12.
now 19-0 up against Spain. I don't think Vanessa Rial will put that in | :13:13. | :13:16.
her tackling portfolio. The scoring team takes the restart. | :13:17. | :13:25.
So France. Back in the hands of the French. Biscarat watches it | :13:26. | :13:33.
carefully. Switching play with a little run... | :13:34. | :13:46.
Horta, the French captain. Stolen by Spain, a chance now for their first | :13:47. | :13:55.
try of the game. Forward, the referee had a good look. Spain is | :13:56. | :14:00.
still in possession. Barbara Pla, slumming it all down. Then | :14:01. | :14:06.
accelerating, up to the 22. -- slamming away. | :14:07. | :14:10.
This is quickly taken. So quickly taken, France were in no position to | :14:11. | :14:18.
defend but not strong enough to prevent the try from Patricia. A | :14:19. | :14:23.
wonderful try. You had to say, when the penalties came, tap and go, tap | :14:24. | :14:29.
and go. That was great. What a moment for Patricia. They will be | :14:30. | :14:36.
delighted with that, it's a big comeback for the Spanish team. They | :14:37. | :14:44.
kept that going, tap and go, and that speed. | :14:45. | :14:50.
You cannot defend against it. That conversion is good, Spain are up to | :14:51. | :14:59.
seven points, 19-7, France leading. You would expect the Spanish to be | :15:00. | :15:03.
good at convergence and drop goals, that was a great drop goal. | :15:04. | :15:08.
Seven points on the board, well done to Spain. Scoring a try and | :15:09. | :15:15.
converting it. Garcia comes back to take the restart. She is a key | :15:16. | :15:21.
player. She is showing what a good player shears, keeping the speed of | :15:22. | :15:25.
the game up, fantastic and trying to get as much hyped on the restart as | :15:26. | :15:30.
possible. Allowing a challenge. -- what a good player she is. | :15:31. | :15:39.
A good tackle. The ball is not out of play. | :15:40. | :15:51.
Elodie Guiglion with a bit of physical contact. Good movement off | :15:52. | :16:07.
the ball. Short and long. Elodie Guiglion is off again, support from | :16:08. | :16:13.
Elodie Guiglion and she is strong enough and fast enough to make it to | :16:14. | :16:19.
the line. A wonderful try. What is impressive is the skill of the | :16:20. | :16:25.
ladies here. Watching the width they are putting on the game and their | :16:26. | :16:29.
left hand is excellent. The off-loads and the tackle makes this | :16:30. | :16:34.
such a great game. We will not be up applauding for the rucks and mauls, | :16:35. | :16:37.
we just have the off-loads. That is a wonderful try. Elodie Guiglion | :16:38. | :17:00.
scored the try. A conversion just slides wide by Pauline Biscarat. | :17:01. | :17:13.
Rose Thomas is on for France as a rolling replacement. | :17:14. | :17:29.
Here is Thomas involves, Barbara Pla for Spain. | :17:30. | :17:39.
Well delivered. That was an important tackle but it was an | :17:40. | :17:45.
illegal one. Spain will pick up the pieces from this. It will be quickly | :17:46. | :17:58.
taken by Maria Casado, if she can. Yes, she can. | :17:59. | :18:08.
This is the little charge by one of the try scorers. Jade Le Pesq. Now | :18:09. | :18:32.
to Spain again. The last player of the game in the whistle has gone. | :18:33. | :18:40.
Barbara Pla let it go and she is back in possession. | :18:41. | :18:48.
Oh, it has gone loose yet again. This could be the end of the game. | :18:49. | :18:56.
No. Spain in possession. The good tackle by France. | :18:57. | :19:11.
The Spanish number four, Patricia go see is a wonderful player. She is | :19:12. | :19:19.
certainly the player that has kept the Spanish team going. Spain are | :19:20. | :19:23.
going to make an early change. Patricia Garcia is coming off and | :19:24. | :19:50.
there is one last chance for Spain. A penalty to France this time. | :19:51. | :20:00.
Knocked on by France. That is the end of the very first game of | :20:01. | :20:04.
women's sevens at the Olympic Games and France have beaten Spain by | :20:05. | :20:12.
24-7. Thank you very much to Eddie Butler | :20:13. | :20:16.
and Clive Woodward for talking us through the very first rugby sevens | :20:17. | :20:21.
game of the Olympic Games and we have another night standing by | :20:22. | :20:24.
because we can talk to Matthew Pinsent for the very first time. | :20:25. | :20:29.
What a great way to kick off the women's competition. | :20:30. | :20:31.
Yes, a lovely piece of history to see rugby introduced back into the | :20:32. | :20:37.
Olympics. 1924 was the first time the -- last time the 15 game was | :20:38. | :20:42.
played so it is great to see rugby reintroduced and the women's sevens | :20:43. | :20:47.
have taken the torch and created a little piece of Olympic history. It | :20:48. | :20:51.
is a pleasure to be there to witness it. It is great to see you down | :20:52. | :20:56.
there, Matt, we have a busy day of action in the women's competition. | :20:57. | :21:01.
Give us an idea of what we can look forward to next. The next match, we | :21:02. | :21:06.
have just seen Spain against France and next we have Kenny against New | :21:07. | :21:11.
Zealand. New Zealand are a runaway favourite in the women's competition | :21:12. | :21:15.
and a few minutes after that it will be Team GB against the hosts, | :21:16. | :21:23.
Brazil. It is a long day of group stage games but we are hoping that | :21:24. | :21:27.
GB will make a winning start to that and continue the habit in the next | :21:28. | :21:32.
few days here at the Deodoro. Tell us a bit more about the venue. | :21:33. | :21:37.
Plenty of the venues have a green theme which sticks with the national | :21:38. | :21:40.
colours but that grass looks good enough to touch. It is absolutely | :21:41. | :21:45.
beautiful. Do not take too much impact on the number of seats or | :21:46. | :21:48.
tickets who have been sold here, there is a posse of spectators | :21:49. | :21:52.
behind at the camera can't see in the stand up here but we are hoping | :21:53. | :21:57.
through the session today and in the few days on in the competition, | :21:58. | :22:02.
these seats will fill up as the days go, because obviously sevens is just | :22:03. | :22:06.
match after match after match and it is a fantastic atmosphere already | :22:07. | :22:09.
and we hope you will philatelist more than what we can see already at | :22:10. | :22:15.
the moment. A fantastic start. Thank you to Matthew Pinsent at the | :22:16. | :22:16.
Deodoro Stadium. Plenty more coming up for you on BBC | :22:17. | :22:26.
Four. Ireland and their 100 year wait in the hockey as the men take | :22:27. | :22:30.
on India and we will be with them very soon. Wimbledon mixed doubles | :22:31. | :22:36.
champion Heather Watson starts her Olympic singles campaign. Staying | :22:37. | :22:47.
with the hockey it is a must win game for written against Belgium in | :22:48. | :22:53.
pool A. And closing our programme we will take a trip to the Rio arena to | :22:54. | :22:58.
see if the men's British gymnastics team can qualify for the finals. | :22:59. | :23:02.
They really ought to and it will be a disappointment if they don't. Just | :23:03. | :23:07.
to recapitalise here is how the next few hours look for you. Ireland | :23:08. | :23:12.
against India is next and then we have the men's hockey as well. We | :23:13. | :23:18.
will seek Belgium against great Britain and then Team GB will be | :23:19. | :23:21.
taking to the podium for the gymnastics. Come with us for a bit | :23:22. | :23:31.
of a walk. We have amassed the most humongous queue here on the Olympic | :23:32. | :23:36.
Park. We are going to show tennis a bit later and we will see the mixed | :23:37. | :23:41.
doubles champion from Wimbledon in action, Heather Watson, maybe this | :23:42. | :23:45.
is what they are all after. I could ask them but they looked very busy | :23:46. | :23:49.
trying to get the best seat in town. Instead we will go from the Olympic | :23:50. | :23:53.
Park here and back to the Deodoro where we will talk hockey. We have | :23:54. | :23:58.
real medal hopes for both the great Britain men and women but for | :23:59. | :24:03.
Ireland, they are in uncharted territory. They have been for the | :24:04. | :24:07.
last 100 years. They will take on India, a team with real Olympic | :24:08. | :24:12.
pedigree. Five times the men have taken the title in this competition. | :24:13. | :24:17.
As we look at how the groups are split in the hockey, there are 12 | :24:18. | :24:22.
teams in two groups of six. The top for progress to the quarterfinals. | :24:23. | :24:26.
Ireland are one of the lower ranked teams but they will fancy their | :24:27. | :24:29.
chances of qualifying out of group B. The match started a little | :24:30. | :24:36.
earlier and we will join it in the second quarter, but there wasn't a | :24:37. | :24:42.
goal scored in the first quarter, by India. This is the very last action | :24:43. | :24:48.
and as you can see right on the buzzer India take the first plug in | :24:49. | :24:53.
that quarter. It is a change to the format from London 2012, they now | :24:54. | :24:59.
play four quarters of 15 minutes. So, let us join it in the second | :25:00. | :25:05.
corner after we see how India whipped their way in that penalty | :25:06. | :25:08.
corner to take the lead and they lead by 1-0. We will see how the | :25:09. | :25:12.
second quarter goes in the company of Erin Murphy. | :25:13. | :25:20.
We're underway in the second period. India won and no score for Ireland. | :25:21. | :25:37.
A goal already. Jackson shows good hands as he dribbles around. India | :25:38. | :25:47.
try to transition. Jonathan Jackson read it well. John Jackson is | :25:48. | :25:54.
showing great prowess on the ball. Ireland Sleep Time on the ball. When | :25:55. | :25:58.
you are defending penalty corners like that it takes you out of your | :25:59. | :26:03.
off -- offensive rhythm and the coach will try to turn the tables | :26:04. | :26:09.
back for Ireland. Bell goes back out over the 23. Harte is trying to find | :26:10. | :26:24.
a scene and he gets it forward. A bit of skill there and flick between | :26:25. | :26:29.
the legs but he it away. India will happily take the turnover and break | :26:30. | :26:37.
up the right side. Here comes the captain of India to severe. . It | :26:38. | :26:51.
will be a long corner. India, you can see when they get those | :26:52. | :26:54.
turnovers that Ireland are trying to be cute and clever in the scoring | :26:55. | :26:58.
circle and India are happy to take those turnovers and a transition | :26:59. | :27:03.
through. They are coming at Ireland again. Here is Raghunath Vokkaliga. | :27:04. | :27:13.
It is his second Olympics and you cannot discount the experience up | :27:14. | :27:18.
and down this India line-up, including their coach who has got an | :27:19. | :27:22.
Olympic gold medal in his previous job at the Netherlands coach in | :27:23. | :27:28.
1996. Right now they are enjoying a 1-0 lead in the second period. 12.45 | :27:29. | :27:36.
to go in the second part. Ireland have no score. Swept away by | :27:37. | :27:53.
Jonathan Bell. Ireland hemmed in their own in the 23. That will be a | :27:54. | :28:07.
free hit for the team Ireland. Here is Harte. To Jonathan Bell, up the | :28:08. | :28:19.
right side. Ireland are trying to find a same again and turn back | :28:20. | :28:23.
there. The right idea by Eugene Magee. He dances in with a shot. It | :28:24. | :28:33.
is up high and over the neck. That ball was well wide of the Indian | :28:34. | :28:39.
net. The right idea by Ireland at the shop was not on target. -- but | :28:40. | :28:49.
the shot was not on target. Ireland make some substitutions. Good use of | :28:50. | :29:03.
the substitutions. Everybody is fresh and hydrated which will be a | :29:04. | :29:05.
factor in the Brazilian heat. Harte as steady as a rock comes | :29:06. | :29:19.
forward., Art. 33 goals internationally for Ireland. He | :29:20. | :29:25.
plays for the Royal racing club in Belgium. Michael Darling turns the | :29:26. | :29:37.
ball over. A free hit from the 15 or thereabouts for India and they come | :29:38. | :29:48.
forward. It goes ahead to Raghunath Vokkaliga. He is the lone marksman | :29:49. | :29:53.
in this game in the men's hockey tournament. It is his 131st | :29:54. | :30:02.
international goal. You can see that he wants to attack and he wants to | :30:03. | :30:08.
test Ireland's resolve. He is reading the game well and he feels | :30:09. | :30:11.
that maybe he has got some space down the right-hand side but Ireland | :30:12. | :30:15.
have fresh legs and they are using their substitutions and they have | :30:16. | :30:20.
kept Raghunath Vokkaliga at bay except for that penalty strike, the | :30:21. | :30:21.
penalty goal. That was picked off by Darling... | :30:22. | :30:34.
But was good hands from Alan Sothern. A dangerous moment on the | :30:35. | :30:38.
attack 40 mile and right there. Good signs for them, as they try to get | :30:39. | :30:49.
one back here -- 4-team Ireland. India make a break down the | :30:50. | :30:54.
left-hand side, trying to make it 2-0, that was an incredible effort. | :30:55. | :31:02.
Look at the speed. Two on one situation, Harte takes the shooter | :31:03. | :31:07.
the whole way. And the shooter was coming down the | :31:08. | :31:17.
side... Just putting it wide. Nikkin with the chance, he puts it wide. It | :31:18. | :31:34.
remains 1-0. Kirk Shimmins... Dancing along the sideline, trying | :31:35. | :31:38.
to stay out of the green turf. Good defence from Ireland. German in two | :31:39. | :31:46.
double coverage here. India bringing in numbers, trying to hem Ireland in | :31:47. | :31:53.
their own zone. Magnificent pressure from India. Eight minutes 20 seconds | :31:54. | :32:00.
remaining in the first period. 20 remaining in the first half of | :32:01. | :32:07.
this contest. Raghunath with a penalty corner. Into the first | :32:08. | :32:13.
period, an exciting first period. Islands trying to find some offence. | :32:14. | :32:15.
Jackson ahead. John Jermyn to the other side. A | :32:16. | :32:38.
chance! Kyle Good could not find a handle but he got a chance, it's a | :32:39. | :32:46.
penalty corner, the first four Ireland. An excellent ball. A good | :32:47. | :32:51.
score in deed. You can see that was a good competing level from Kyle | :32:52. | :32:53.
Good who plays for months -- Munster. It does not work out | :32:54. | :33:06.
when they get the all-important penalty corner. Tying this contest | :33:07. | :33:13.
up against the fifth-ranked team in the world, India. The injector is | :33:14. | :33:20.
Kyle Good. Good, made the play happen. Causing that chance on the | :33:21. | :33:28.
penalty. Magnificent! 1-1, John Jermyn. Magnificent set piece from | :33:29. | :33:41.
Ireland, and John Jermyn will get his 91st international goal. | :33:42. | :33:55.
India are moving forward. Seven minutes to go in this half... | :33:56. | :34:28.
The goal was not awarded... Ireland protested, that was the right call | :34:29. | :34:41.
from the referee and it remains 1-0. Paul Gleghorne, they have two shake | :34:42. | :34:45.
that off and move forward. Islands down the side, Chris Cargo to | :34:46. | :34:53.
Jackson. That India's ball. Physically taken | :34:54. | :35:04.
off the ball, tripped by Alan Sothern. Perhaps trying to take some | :35:05. | :35:09.
liberties. We know that Cedaro Singh can be temperamental at times... | :35:10. | :35:18.
Perhaps trying to gain an advantage -- Sardara Singh. But it will not | :35:19. | :35:35.
work there. Conor Harte. Across the pitch, five minutes 40 seconds | :35:36. | :35:37.
remaining. Heart break for Ireland on that site | :35:38. | :35:43.
-- set piece. The goal was disallowed. Ireland | :35:44. | :35:48.
showed you that team ethos, when they get chances on short corners, | :35:49. | :35:57.
penalty corners, they can punish. Sreejesh... | :35:58. | :35:59.
They haven't tried to move the offence forward. Now, on cue, they | :36:00. | :36:07.
are in the scoring D, Raghunath tries to | :36:08. | :36:13.
move it forward. Five minutes to go in the second | :36:14. | :36:18.
quarter, and of course the first half, a fall of the pool B Mac | :36:19. | :36:26.
pool B action from the Deodoro Stadium. Magee to John Jermyn, who | :36:27. | :36:38.
thought he had scored and equalised on a penalty. He got his 91st | :36:39. | :36:47.
international goal, or so he thought. | :36:48. | :36:50.
Moving forward, a second penalty corner, can they get the same idea | :36:51. | :36:57.
and get the ball past Sreejesh? And make sure that there are no | :36:58. | :37:00.
infractions on the actual penalty... Have a look at the action here... | :37:01. | :37:10.
Into the feet... The right call is made. At this level. You don't have | :37:11. | :37:16.
a chance to get the ball on it. This is where the game is won, on these | :37:17. | :37:22.
penalty corners. Spot play from Ireland, putting it | :37:23. | :37:27.
into the feet of Chand and. And now, a penalty corner. No goal. | :37:28. | :37:43.
Harte put all of his six frame into that, dragging the flick... -- six | :37:44. | :37:51.
frame into that. Once again, execution not quite | :37:52. | :37:55.
there on the penalty corner for Ireland. Raghunath. Across to 23, | :37:56. | :38:08.
India are happy that this is a 1-0 lead, but they want the pace and | :38:09. | :38:14.
tempo they set early in the first period. They had wave after wave, | :38:15. | :38:19.
coming forward against Ireland. Four penalty corners, they scored on | :38:20. | :38:24.
one, Raghunath. Now, Ireland are back in the contest. Still a 1-0 | :38:25. | :38:31.
lead in favour of India. Rum and deep tries to get into the zone... | :38:32. | :38:40.
-- Ramandeep Singh. Ireland are troubled in the D. That was smart | :38:41. | :38:55.
play in deed from Uthappa. Into the feet... The referee had the call. | :38:56. | :38:59.
Smart play from Uthappa, hammering the ball across the crease. It is a | :39:00. | :39:03.
fifth penalty corner. Ramandeep Singh injects the ball, | :39:04. | :39:16.
and again, magnificent execution! Rupinder, with his 56th | :39:17. | :39:50.
international goal. Magnificent ball control, and again... I think that | :39:51. | :39:56.
Harte sees it. Credit where it is due, it's like a rocket coming at | :39:57. | :40:01.
you on the drag flick. It is 2-0 to India. Rupinder, another penalty | :40:02. | :40:18.
corner comes to haunt Ireland. Rupinder, player of the tournament | :40:19. | :40:26.
in the 2016 hockey India league. It shows why there. His 56th | :40:27. | :40:30.
international goal and a penalty corner. WHISTLE | :40:31. | :40:43.
India, coming back for more. A free hit, given to India. Starting with | :40:44. | :40:48.
Surinder Kumar. Surinder Kumar, very good in the first corner. | :40:49. | :40:56.
Quarterbacking the play, moving it steadily forward down the right-hand | :40:57. | :41:01.
side and trying to find a break of seam in the Irish resolve. Penalty | :41:02. | :41:07.
corners, we often see them in international hockey in the men and | :41:08. | :41:10.
women's games, it comes down to be set pieces. Ireland have had two. | :41:11. | :41:17.
But violations within the scoring D. They need a chance to get on the | :41:18. | :41:23.
board. India have had five and been successful twice, Raghunath in the | :41:24. | :41:29.
first quarter, Rupinder in the second. Two minutes to go in the | :41:30. | :41:32.
first half. WHISTLE Shane O'Donoghue... The cash deep | :41:33. | :41:39.
wants to substitute in for India. The head coach begins to use his | :41:40. | :41:48.
substitutes -- Akashdeep. Managing the heat and managing fresh legs on | :41:49. | :41:52.
both sides of the ball. It's imperative on day one. Harte... A | :41:53. | :42:00.
quick pass forward there by Sean O'Donoghue. -- Shane O'Donoghue, who | :42:01. | :42:10.
turns and retreats. India are happy to lob it high, and relieve the | :42:11. | :42:15.
pressure. Shane O'Donoghue plays in Belgium for the KHC Dragons. It's | :42:16. | :42:25.
another chance for Ireland, once again substitutions coming in on | :42:26. | :42:33.
both sides. A referral now... As we await, | :42:34. | :42:42.
Vasquez goes to the video umpire. Quickly ahead by Bell. Into his | :42:43. | :42:55.
feet. O'Donoghue, we wait for the referral. Paco Vasquez, an | :42:56. | :43:04.
electrical engineer and his day-to-day life. 130th cap as a | :43:05. | :43:15.
referee today. We are awaiting the referral. Akashdeep wants to come | :43:16. | :43:22.
off, and Manpreet Singh. For India. The late stages of the | :43:23. | :43:26.
first half. 58.6 seconds in this period. | :43:27. | :43:35.
Bell brings the ball forward. O'Donoghue at the top of the D. | :43:36. | :43:42.
Ireland are hoping that they will get the penalty corner. They are | :43:43. | :43:54.
awaiting the word. Vasquez, 58.6 seconds left in this half, Ireland | :43:55. | :43:59.
want to get something on the board, something positive, as time winds | :44:00. | :44:03.
down. Trailing by a couple of goals against India. | :44:04. | :44:15.
An incredible statistic. 62 Olympic titles for India between 1928 and | :44:16. | :44:19.
1956. It is an incredible milestone, eight | :44:20. | :44:23.
goals overall in Olympic history for India. | :44:24. | :44:31.
In 11 total medals, one silver, two bronze, but since 1980 they have not | :44:32. | :44:37.
had any luck. No penalty quarter, the referral | :44:38. | :44:41.
works in favour of team India. That's not what the head coach on | :44:42. | :44:48.
the Irish side would have wanted. It's the right call made, it looked | :44:49. | :44:52.
like it was at Shane O'Donoghue's feet. | :44:53. | :44:56.
India have 45 seconds remaining in the half and they want to be first | :44:57. | :45:00.
goal, they wanted to get a view on the board, so far so good for the | :45:01. | :45:06.
fifth ranked team in the world -- a view. | :45:07. | :45:09.
Ireland have a lot of work to do, 35 seconds left and they need to keep | :45:10. | :45:12.
their eye on the price defensively. Singh gets its back, Agnes and play | :45:13. | :45:28.
from HArte -- Harte. Akashdeep comes on with fresh legs. Watch Harte, as | :45:29. | :45:33.
quick as he can, moving so well for a big man. It is a penalty corner | :45:34. | :45:38.
once again, the sixth of the contest. | :45:39. | :45:49.
A second penalty quarter -- corner of the quarter. | :45:50. | :46:03.
The captain Sardara Singh will inject this ball. Panic stations, | :46:04. | :46:13.
troubled time for Ireland. A quick shot and a magnificent strike | :46:14. | :46:18.
blocked down and Ireland tried to transition. With just 11 seconds to | :46:19. | :46:23.
they are trying to find Darling in behind the defence. An incredible | :46:24. | :46:26.
action and to end there. Four seconds remaining in the half. Sunil | :46:27. | :46:33.
will hit it and it comes off an Irish lake. As the half and it is | :46:34. | :46:50.
India to, Ireland no score. In the second it was the first goal for | :46:51. | :46:56.
Rupinder Pal Singh. His first in the Olympics but his 56th overall | :46:57. | :47:00.
internationally. At the end of one half it is India two, Ireland no | :47:01. | :47:10.
score. That was always going to be a tough | :47:11. | :47:14.
ask for Ireland. They trailed by two goals to nil and they have 215 | :47:15. | :47:18.
minute periods to try get back into the game. Before we get back to the | :47:19. | :47:22.
hockey in the second half we will rattle through some of the action | :47:23. | :47:25.
going on around the grounds right now. That's big queue that I showed | :47:26. | :47:30.
you before the hockey has moved on and they are all into the tennis | :47:31. | :47:37.
which is where we are going to go right now and there is loads of an | :47:38. | :47:45.
Titian nation around this tournament right now, not least for Great | :47:46. | :47:47.
Britain because the flag-bearers is the Olympic champion and Andy Murray | :47:48. | :47:49.
has been drawn against Viktor Troicki in the opening round as he | :47:50. | :47:59.
seeks to retain his title. Novak Djokovic takes on Juan Martin Del | :48:00. | :48:02.
Potro of Argentina but that is not until tomorrow. We have Kyle Edmund | :48:03. | :48:06.
involved in the singles draw for the men as well and Heather Watson is | :48:07. | :48:10.
coming up next and Johanna Konta is involved in doubles action today. | :48:11. | :48:14.
Not singles until tomorrow. We look forward to seeing Heather in action | :48:15. | :48:17.
this afternoon very shortly, but not before we get a result between Italy | :48:18. | :48:25.
and the Netherlands. It is on Court number three at the moment. The | :48:26. | :48:33.
Dutch woman leads. It is on serve, 5-4 in the opening set. Heather | :48:34. | :48:38.
Watson is up in court after that match. So, right now the men's road | :48:39. | :48:47.
race, Chris Froome is in action and they have been going for a couple of | :48:48. | :48:51.
hours and a half in that one. Along the coast at Copacabana. Chris | :48:52. | :48:55.
Froome is hoping to add Olympic gold to the three Tour de France wins | :48:56. | :48:59.
that he has already scored. You can see that one right now, as we speak, | :49:00. | :49:06.
with 143 kilometres to go over on the BBC sport website and the app as | :49:07. | :49:13.
well. Also. We have got men's double sculls in the rowing. That is down a | :49:14. | :49:22.
Copacabana. We have the silver medallists trying to go for the | :49:23. | :49:29.
final. You can see that on the website. Britain's great railway | :49:30. | :49:35.
Kath Grainger is paired up with her new women's double sculls partner, | :49:36. | :49:37.
Vicky Thornley and they have qualified second in their heat for | :49:38. | :49:41.
the second -- semifinals. We will see them progress in the | :49:42. | :49:46.
competition. Now for a look at handball. The Dutch women's team | :49:47. | :49:50.
have started their campaign for a handball medal. They reach the 2015 | :49:51. | :49:55.
World Championship final and they are up against France in the early | :49:56. | :49:58.
stages there but the French are leading. It is 6-3. More Dutch women | :49:59. | :50:09.
over in the volleyball. As you can see it is orange against red. The | :50:10. | :50:13.
Chinese players are wearing blue just now. It is orange against blue, | :50:14. | :50:17.
Netherlands against China in the opening game just that, and it is | :50:18. | :50:22.
three points apiece. Oh, there is a fourth for China! Over at the | :50:23. | :50:31.
Aquatics Centre we have got men's water polo. That is Spain taking on | :50:32. | :50:36.
Italy. You can see all of this, by the way, over on the BBC sport | :50:37. | :50:40.
website and the BBC sport app. Pick your sports and give your life. | :50:41. | :50:45.
Water polo 1-1 against Italy and Spain. Over at the Deodoro we saw | :50:46. | :50:52.
sparked -- France beating Spain in the very first rugby sevens match in | :50:53. | :50:59.
Olympic history and the second game of the women's competition New | :51:00. | :51:03.
Zealand, the three-time world Series champions were well on top against | :51:04. | :51:08.
Kenny down there, and another try to boot. Let's see this go over the | :51:09. | :51:20.
post. That is 26 20 that they lead Kenya. Same with the rugby, we | :51:21. | :51:24.
remind you that the Great Britain women ( pen against a post, Brazil. | :51:25. | :51:33.
That will be on BBC One 4pm. The New Zealand team are hot favourites for | :51:34. | :51:38.
the metal and they will have a good competition with Australia in this | :51:39. | :51:44.
one. We will see how the New Zealand team can get on and wrap up more | :51:45. | :51:49.
points against Kenya. We sit with this at the Deodoro Stadium and then | :51:50. | :51:53.
we will be back with the hockey very shortly. | :51:54. | :52:12.
Kenya will want to get some point is, if it comes down to a battle for | :52:13. | :52:20.
those slots for qualification in the quarterfinals. They will need some | :52:21. | :52:24.
point in their favour and switch direction again. The pressure means | :52:25. | :52:42.
that New Zealand have a line-up. It opens up. | :52:43. | :53:00.
The ball really gets into place so quickly and the handling skills of | :53:01. | :53:07.
the New Zealand team is just fantastic. New Zealand are rotating | :53:08. | :53:11.
their team and giving everyone a run out in this first game. | :53:12. | :53:23.
Five conversion tries to the all Blacks. Kenya are yet to score. They | :53:24. | :53:32.
need to get their hands on the ball and show what they can do. If they | :53:33. | :53:38.
have possession, Kenya do have a slightly unusual strategy but | :53:39. | :53:46.
because they are all speedsters they will sort of kick and chase. They | :53:47. | :53:56.
have so little of the ball Portia Woodman chases the restart. She has | :53:57. | :54:03.
kicked the ball straight out and that was the first minor error she | :54:04. | :54:10.
has made. There are five converted tries, not just converting the tries | :54:11. | :54:13.
but she overcooked that slightly. Kenya will be glad to get their hand | :54:14. | :54:18.
on the ball and it is just whether they can withstand the physical side | :54:19. | :54:29.
of the New Zealand game. They're just having a go at the New Zealand | :54:30. | :54:31.
defence. They are off again. Hat-trick of tries for Portia | :54:32. | :54:59.
Woodman. I've been really impressed with Kenya. The way she holds people | :55:00. | :55:04.
with two hands, she is a really impressive player and it is the | :55:05. | :55:08.
first time I have seen her play live. -- Kelly Brazier. Nathan Wong | :55:09. | :55:18.
prepares this difficult conversion that she hasn't missed yet. New | :55:19. | :55:25.
Zealand ring the changes. To Reza Fitzpatrick is on. Up against the | :55:26. | :55:32.
post and the first Miss. This New Zealand team are a tough | :55:33. | :55:50.
team. Nathan Wong has been wonderful. A big round of applause. | :55:51. | :56:04.
Just brilliant. A safe catch. Kenya took it on the board. Oh, dear. Not | :56:05. | :56:13.
gone. The canyons are struggling here. This is the second ranked team | :56:14. | :56:17.
in the tournament, New Zealand, a very physical team. Kenya are | :56:18. | :56:28.
struggling a little bit here with the quality. | :56:29. | :56:50.
Woodman is dancing and weaving and Sarah Goss is taking the straight up | :56:51. | :57:01.
the middle route. An easy run in. The tries finally scored. | :57:02. | :57:14.
That was probably one of the best tries we have seen. The way they | :57:15. | :57:24.
keep passing and we talk about their netball skills. This is a tournament | :57:25. | :57:30.
with a really world-class team in New Zealand. The bigger teams, | :57:31. | :57:36.
Australia, Team GB and Canada and America, they will be watching this | :57:37. | :57:43.
and they will be pretty impressed. The canyons are not the greatest. | :57:44. | :57:47.
Opposition that this is a good first run and a huge marker. -- Kenya | :57:48. | :57:57.
team. Kelly Brazier needs to go another foot. That will be a New | :57:58. | :58:06.
Zealand offer and scrummage for the line-out. | :58:07. | :58:13.
Line-out. Scrummage. We keep tossing up! Just watch the quality of the | :58:14. | :58:31.
passing down the left hand. Fitzpatrick to McAllister. Now then, | :58:32. | :58:39.
McAllister. She didn't quite have the speed to get away. She had the | :58:40. | :58:49.
strength to get away from Celestine Masinde. It is just stop and go and | :58:50. | :58:55.
if anyone is chasing you you can reduce your speed slightly and | :58:56. | :59:01.
McAllister is wonderful to watch. I am really enjoying this New Zealand | :59:02. | :59:07.
performance. It is a really quality team and every single player on this | :59:08. | :59:11.
team has been very impressive. They look good. Kelly Brazier doesn't | :59:12. | :59:16.
have the two points but it doesn't matter. New Zealand are over 50. 52 | :59:17. | :59:23.
points they have beaten Kenya. One of the star teams of the women's | :59:24. | :59:27.
sevens circuit has negotiated the first round with ease. New Zealand | :59:28. | :59:36.
52-0 against Kenya. That was a bit of a training match | :59:37. | :59:40.
in the end for New Zealand. It was too fast and pacey and two fleet of | :59:41. | :59:45.
foot. They won by a half-century of points against Kenya there. We will | :59:46. | :59:49.
show you rugby sevens later on in the competition but let us go to the | :59:50. | :59:54.
hockey arena now and join Ireland against India. They are into the | :59:55. | :59:58.
third quarter of the second half and there are no goals in the first five | :59:59. | :00:02.
or six minutes or so so it | :00:03. | :00:03. |
