Day 1 BBC Four: 13.00-16.00 Olympics

Here we are, then. The waiting is over. For seven years Brazil has

been preparing, four years is since a party they all enjoyed in London

and finally we can say, welcomed to Rio and the 2016 Olympic Games. And

I'm glad to say the city is looking resplendent for you this morning.

The iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in all its glory, and the

sight of the Sugarloaf Mountain just next door, dominating the skyline

above Copacabana Beach. You know that you're in Rio. 25 kilometres

along the coast you find us, in the Rio limp the park for day one of the

Olympics. Welcome one and all. There was a steady stream of people coming

into the park this morning as we come into our very first taste of

Olympic action. The temperature has already hit 25, 20 6 degrees. The

perfect way to kick off our Olympics coverage. It is morning here, so,

four hours ahead of where you are, we are just after nine o'clock in

the morning. I will make sure to remind myself of that. This is going

to be our home for the next two weeks or so on BBC Four. We will be

bringing you the buzz of the Olympic Park every day. Thank you for

staying with us, in advance. Let me show you around. Let's start with

this red, yellow and orange number, the Olympic Tennis Centre, that is

centre court where Andy Murray could be defending the Olympic title that

he won back in 2012. We will talk about Andy Murray and a second. He

had some business to do last night. This beige building over here is the

Aquatic Centre. It is open air. Tom Bailey will be diving up there on

his platform, enjoying the environment and whatever the weather

is doing when he takes to the platform. -- Tom Bailey. And how

about these three buildings that you can see? This is the karaoke arenas,

basketball has the biggest one -- Carioca arenas. We will see

taekwondo, Jade Jones, another Olympic champion, can she actually

taekwondo gold that she got in 2012 's this place lights up later in the

day. All of the venues do, so when Clare Balding is bringing you the

latest action later, you will see it in all its twilight glory, including

the main Olympics Aquatics Centre which is this shimmering, one over

here. It will turn a luminous blue later on today. Look forward to that

one. And before we finish the tour, I have got to show you the velodrome

just here. Laura Trott will be a headline act in there, when that

gets going in a few days' time. It is not the biggest Olympic Park. It

is about half the size of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park we enjoyed in

London 2012, but it is distinctive, nonetheless, and this is the Olympic

Way down the centre of the park. We will try to show you around the park

as much as we can during the programme. This place is only able

to come to life after the opening ceremony last night. I am aware that

it went late into the night for some of you back home, so if you missed

it, here are the best bits from the Maracana Stadium. It was a festival

of colour with dancing and costumes. And the country so famous for its

rainforest, and lush, green trees, brought together to create the

Olympic rings. What a sight that was. Team GB was led by Andy Murray,

the reigning Olympic tennis champion, before the Olympic flame

made its way in, denied Olympic gold in Athens 2004, he finally had

another chance at glory. With the cauldron lit, the game -- the games

officially began with a flurry of fireworks. You may know already --

you may already know this but the Maracana as one of four Olympic zone

is dotted around the city. As well as both ceremonies, the football

finals will take place in the national stadium. Just next door is

the other circular venue, the home of volleyball. There is the samba

drone, an iconic location for the annual carnival in Rio. That has

been transformed into an archery venue. Last but not least, the

Olympic Stadium, were the stage is set for Usain Bolt to create yet

more history. If we headed west, we find Copacabana Beach, arguably the

most famous beach in the world, and right in the heart of it is that

stunning venue. Where better to stage the beach volleyball? We had

better get ourselves down there to the beach volleyball. That is going

to be a popular spot. We're going to see road cycling and triathlon

decided down on the coast as well. The rowing, the canoe sprint and the

sailing are taking place amidst the familiar scenery around there. 20

kilometres to the north, we find the third Olympic zone, home to the

highest concentration of military personnel in Latin America. No big

surprise that as well we will find the shooting centre. Rugby sevens

and modern pentathlon will take place in the Diadora Stadium. And

the Rio radical Park is where to go for all you adrenaline junkies. We

will see BMX and slalom there. Last but not least, our spot, Baha. It

has the arena that is home to the handball. Away from the park, we

have our own very own beach in Baha, who needs Copacabana? B got 18

kilometres orbit along the coast, including whether time trial is

going to be staged. We have the brand-new Olympic golf course. We

will see that in action from next week. It really is a big and

beautiful place, Rio. I will try to show you as much of it as we can in

the next fortnight. In the more immediate future, here is what is

coming up on our very first programme of the games. We're

kicking things off with Hungary against Serbia in water polo. There

is an all European clash in the women's rugby sevens, France against

Spain. We'll be live to the Diadora Stadium. India have a proud history

in the hockey, worse for the Irish men it is a first Olympic appearance

in over 100 years. Fresh from her Wimbledon mixed doubles title,

Heather Watson starts Olympic singles campaign. And we're going to

go back with the hockey because group a is going to be a tough test

for Great Britain. An agonising fourth place in London 2012, and the

campaign begins against Belgium. And it is the men's gymnastics

qualification. Medals expected from Max Whitlock, Lewis Smith and

company. No room for slip-ups today. Here is how the afternoon of day one

is shaping up for you guys on BBC Four. We kick off with water polo,

that is coming up shortly. Then the rugby sevens. We have a double dose

of hockey. Sandwiched in the middle, we will see Heather Watson in the

tennis, then we have the men's gymnastics. Matt Whittle -- Max

Whitlock and Team GB. Then we have beach volleyball, shooting and

swimming. The action has already started. Hazel and the team are

showing the men's single sculls heats on BBC One. If you fancy that,

So now you know. We will kick off coverage with the water polo. The

finals of which will take place in the Olympics Aquatics Centre that I

showed you. This week it is packed with swimming, the heats of which

are starting in about four hours' time. We're going to kick things off

over here at the Maria Lake Aquatics Centre for a grudge match between

two water polo heavyweights. Before we get to the action, here is a

little guide to the sport. Water polo has been an Olympic sport since

1900 in Paris. There are seven players in each team, six so-called

outfield players and a goalkeeper. They are allowed six reserves and

unlimited substitutions. Substitutes are crucial because of the gruelling

nature of the sport. The players are not allowed to touch the bottom of

the pool during the match at any point. They have two state upright

and ready by keeping the legs moving backwards and forwards in what is

known as the eggbeater motion. There are two important lines, the two

metre line and a five metre line. The two metre line is two metres

from the goal and the attacking team are not allowed to pass it unless

they have possession of the ball or it is already in that area. If an

attacking players fouled within five metres of the goal, the referee can

award a penalty shot from the five metre line. If the file is committed

further out than five metres, a free-throw is awarded. Goalkeepers

can use two hands at once but outfield players can only use one

hand at the time. The game is split into four quarters of eight minutes

and although the total playing time is 32 minutes, the game usually

lasts for over an hour, because it is stopped and started regularly.

Each quarter begins with the times lean -- the teams lined up on the

goal lines and when the referee blows the whistle, they sprint

towards centre of the pool. A shot clock controls time for shooting

because when in possession teams only have 30 seconds to shoot at

all. It is not a sport for the thing parted or anyone who is not good at

swimming. There are spectators making the way down to the Aquatic

Centre. They are getting themselves into position for this match. Water

polo is important in mainland Europe and North America. And Ollie

Williams has jetted into join us from there. Would you say that the

temperature or the scenery is the biggest thing 's look at these

hills. It is really good. You know your stuff about water polo. Hungary

and Serbia will not pull any punches. It is vicious under the

water. It is a vicious sport to begin with. There is track cycling

on the opening morning and it was Britain and Australia, that would be

setting the tone of the Olympics for both of those teams. And water polo

is track cycling for Hungary. It is track cycling for Serbia, they have

won just about everything since 2013. All the rest of the athletes

are watching back in the Olympics village, and it will set the tone

for those entire teams. It could be like a wild West shoot out. This

could be the final, that we are about to watch. Let's have a look at

the groups. We have 12 teams in the men's competition. Group A, Group B,

six teams in each, the top four automatically progress. If we have a

look at group A, that is where we find Serbia and Hungary. Hungary,

the 15th medals and Olympic competition, the most successful in

the history of this sport, and Serbia have won everything there is

to win in the last few years. You look at the other teams, pick

out maybe Croatia, the champions in 2012. The USA were dark horses in

the past, have done quite well at a couple of Olympics. Brazil are now

coached by a man who has won Olympic titles with three different teams

before. There are maybe eight or nine teams who stand a realistic

chance of winning. Let's talk about Hungary. You talk about all those

successes over the years. The World Championship is decided by the world

league. They missed out on the top eight, but only just. They want to

get themselves back on the top of the roster. Yes, the world league is

difficult to predict sometimes, who wins it changes year-on-year. It is

not necessarily the absolute and end all, but Hungary, bread team that

won Olympics won Olympics after Olympics after Olympics, to get

nothing at London 2012 is a big disaster. They need to put that

right, starting this morning. Starting this afternoon for you back

home. They have already started. Action got underway at about 9am our

morning and this is exactly what happened. It was Hungary who went

ahead first in the opening stages of the game. Serbia were not far

behind. Hungary came back to take the lead once again before Serbia...

It is end to end stuff. It is told to tone, blow for blow. Serbia

equalised, got the fourth goal, before Hungary went ahead once again

to make it 3-2. Serbia equalised again, they said it would be tight.

At the moment, the score is Hungary leading 5-3. We talked about scores

to settle. Shall we go to the second quarter? I think we will. Let's head

into the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre now and see exactly what is going on

right now. The sun is shimmering of that open-air arena. We can see the

water. We will see plenty more water polo throughout the day. But we can

hand over for the end of the first quarter and going into the second

quarter. Will the Hungarians use the

remainder to try to control the clock? The seconds will count down.

That will be the end of the first period. I save right at the end. It

is a long effort in and the Serbians find themselves down by two to

Hungary after the first eight minutes of play.

And there you see the concentration coming in from the Serbians as they

listen to their coach. They will have not expected this, but no route

to an Olympic medal will be an easy one. Serbia know that for sure. They

have had so much success in the last Olympic cycle. Currently the

champions of six of the seven major titles in that time. Probably one of

the most noticeable ones or most notable ones, probably, is the win

at home in Belgrade. That was earlier this year, they became

European champions. The pressure from Serbia is immense. The

expectation of gold in Rio is at the highest of possibly any of the

teams, of any of the sports. Serbia are expected to be able to come here

and get a medal, but Hungary have them on the ropes as we prepare for

the second period. And they will take off in the blue helmets, that

is Hungary. What a great shot to show you just the force in the pool

as it is locked and won again. So key IDs possessions. There are not a

great amount of them back and forth and if you control the ball well and

win them at those opening swims, it is a big part of controlling the

outcome of a match. Still going in the same direction, left to right,

Hungary are in the blue helmets. And in defence, White helmets, Serbia.

Hungary are looking to double the score line. The whistle comes in and

the Serbians with the infra action leading to the exclusion. Hungary by

feeling their moment. The goal post is the goalkeeper's

best friend in this instance. You see the excitement there and the

pleasure from the Serbian as he gets the benefit.

A big part of a momentum shift, potentially. The whistle comes in.

The extra man in the pool... For Serbia, a little bit of a change of

pace. Defeat to the outside. Awaiting the perfect opportunity.

The whistle extensively coming in from the official. They will have a

real significant advantage, Serbia. They have six players against four.

Serbia are waiting too long and will run out of time. What a defensive

stance from Hungary! Two players down and just coming back into the

field of play. They did enough to force the shops up and over the top

of goal. -- forced the shot. Two minutes gone already in the

second period and they get another look at it, Hungary, to try to

double the scoreline. They don't waste any time, it is a good tactic,

but only if it is accurate. Serbia have been a little bit

wasteful as yet. Can they be more purposeful here?

Serbia retain control, trying to draw it if they can. A whip into the

back of goal, they needed that as much as any they have taken thus

far. The goalkeeper beaten cleanly with

the shot from the Serbian, bringing this match within one.

The clinical strike from He gets the first goal of his

Olympic Games in Rio. From the outside, a lot of pressure

being applied by the Serbians against the Hungarians in fence --

offence. These positions are ever telling.

Hungary have had the chance to be three goals up twice. They have been

unable to take the chance. You see the dishevelled look of the centre

forward, trying to get into a favourable position to shoot. They

were going to have none of it. Balazs Harai has the five metre

shot. Waiting for the whistle from the official.

And finish there is ever precise for Hungary and they have got themselves

that two goal margin again. Daniel Varga got the goal. 32 years

of age. Hungarians get the exclusion. Serbia

need to really continue just to keep pace and keep this game tight. Wait

for their chance at another pocket or passage of play. It is the

Hungarians again that are ever resilient. They are staunch in

defence again. It is led by their emotional leader in the back there.

The defence did the work. Here are now the Hungarians in blue.

Just trying to deceive and open up a shooting lane.

Hungary Airways now from goal. Putting it into an area for them to

be able to retain, drawing out the Serbian defence inside of 20 seconds

on the shot clock. We are at the halfway point of the second period

and they still hold that two goal margin. Can they stretch it, though,

to a third? That was an easy deflection for

Mitrovic. The Hungarians retain the opportunity to reload.

Good control from Hungary in this offensive sequence. Trying to tire

out the defence if they can, of Serbia, and tried to establish

control in this match. So many one-on-one battles going on in this

half of the pool. Serbia again having to really assert themselves,

trying to force the issue. Mitrovic was good enough to make the

save. Some great ball movement here from

Serbia. Looking more continuous in their offensive momentum.

You could see how engaged Hosnyanszky was emotionally from the

start of the match. Serbia with another great save. The

Hungarians cannot get that third goal advantage.

Mitrovic has done a great job. Awaiting a restart.

He has received his helmet back, to put it on. That is the Hungarian

Centre forward, Balazs Harai. He gets himself reloaded, thank you,

sir. What can Hungary do? Serbia have won everything there is

to win in the last few years. Tremendous struggle going on off the

ball. The officials keeping a close watch on map. So much part of the

subtlety of this will be that the Hungarian 's will come forward,

Serbia relenting a little bit, giving some more space which the

Hungarian striker sees, what a shot and what a delightful finish, a

scorcher, of the post and in, Krisztian Manhercz has opened up a

3-goal advantage for Hungary. And that great finish of the post and in

from long range. It was like a SCUD missile. And the Serbians have

fallen back by three goals now. The Hungarian 's are loving it. -- the

Hungarians. One shot, one goal, that is the way they draw it up ahead of

the match. Ever efficient, a big part of the success so far from the

Hungarian is, very resilient defensively. They have done their

best to try to keep all of the men in the pool as well. There is a real

struggle going on in that Serbian defence of half. Beat in, look at

that, and the tall, elevated lofted pass, and there is no time wasted as

the strong hand, he will just take that and pound it down past Nagy.

And the Serbians back in it, too. Working from the off side, the

Hungarian 's. They have given up this position. They know that is

crucial. The Hungarian coach, looking on. Tibor Benedict with a

great move. The Hungarians execute a great defensive sequence. Nagy. A

minute remaining in this first half. The Hungarians again questing to

re-establish that three goal margin. They just force that right through.

That is absolutely destroying, to come forward and finished with such

precision. Gergo Zalanki comes straight at the Serbian defence and

just busts it right through the hands. There can be nothing done on

that play to stop the shot. Nothing to be done by Mitrovic, and he knows

it, as he looks skyward. Gergo Zalanki, with his first goal. Of

these Olympic Games in Rio. Inside this last-minute. It will be a power

play. They need to take advantage here, Serbia. It is going to be a

time-out, as called by the Serbian coach to stop this possession. He

wants to make sure that his side is clear on exactly what the game plan

is. They need to try and strike to bring this within two. The

Hungarians have been very efficient. They stay poised, and this is a

reminder to his Serbian side, now urged on by their team-mates. One

time-out apiece taken so far. Welcome, wherever you are watching,

to Rio, and this Aquatic Centre. It will be Serbia in the White with

the blue trim looking for a shot. Trying to anticipate again, Serbia

looking a little hesitant, and that is a ripping delivery from Dusan

Mandic, takes all that possession and the left-handed strike is

lethal, across the face of goal, and Nagy can hardly even move. It

whistles like past. Bringing this match within touching distance.

Tremendous velocity and perfect placement. The Hungarian is now with

21 seconds remaining in the half, using an opportunity to try and

reassert that three goal margin. He will know, he's a man of experience,

he has been there and done it himself. The importance of that

third goal, with a three possession swing and in water polo, that is

quite a bit, at world-class level. For the Serbians to try and

overcome. It is back in, Hungary are waiting,

the shot clock is synchronised with the game clock now. The waiting time

is their enemy, though. The Serbians are doing enough. Can they get a

shot of any significance? And what a comeback from Hungary, the

management of the clock is divine, and the finish, they could not have

executed any better than their coach would have wanted. That is a moment

of real class. Just to feed it in, and the off-load as it is forced

across the line. And you see the Hungarian is executing a game plan.

That from Decker has brought this match to a 3- goal advantage for the

Hungarians. What a first half of play it has been. The Hungarian 's

have found themselves in front, 9-6. It really has been a great game so

far. Hungary leading by nine goals to six and went toe to toe in that

first half, with the Hungarian is asserting themselves from the end of

the first half. We spoke about this being a real grudge match, one that

could be the final, and it has not disappointed so far. It hasn't. In

the build-up to this, Hungary have not performed so well over the last

couple of years and they have dampened expectations. They have

said, we are not the favourites, we are not the favourites, but it is

like Manchester City and Manchester United saying, we are not their

babies, but they have got a pretty good chance of winning this. Look at

how they have come out of the blocks in this game. This is a fantastic

game to watch. You can feel the intensity coming off it. It is

intense. We were talking about how hard it is because they have got to

keep themselves afloat. They get a foul, if they touch the bottom or

the size. It is the eggbeater kick motion that keeps you up right all

the time. If you are the goalkeeper you are keeping yourself afloat the

whole time then you have to have the athleticism to lunge in any given

direction. There is a strategic element as well, you have to be

thinking whilst you're doing this. They are moving the ball around the

whole time. The defensive aspect is to block any angle on a shot. It is

like a chess match sometimes. They are being punched and kicked

underwater all the way through! That is just the game of water polo. And

you mention the athleticism. Let's look at the 11th goal of the match

scored by Krisztian Manhercz. And you see how much power they can

generate in the arm. It is that kind of shot. The goalkeeper has been

relatively good in this game so far. But look at a shot like that. When

you are watching this sport, look for anticipation from people.

Certainly, in some of the other girls we saw, players move

fractionally before you spot what they are too. They are so skilled at

this level, you have to move and anticipate so much in environment.

We have an idea of what it means to Hungary. They may be playing it down

but they cannot hide their emotions all the time. 60 years ago, they had

one of the most iconic games in the Olympics, didn't they, against the

old soviet union in the final. It was cold blood in the weather.

Quentin Tarantino made a documentary about this. Blood in the water was

the Melbourne 9056 Olympics. What happened was, Hungary played a

soviet union in the middle of the Hungarian revolution that was

happening back home for the Hungarian is against the Soviet

Union. It was an incredible, politically charged game. It was

violent. You had players back there, that is one of the top Hungarian

players. You can see the blood coming down his face from a punch

from the Soviet player he was marking. After that they called off

the game with a minute to go because it was so violent, the fans and

players were attacking each other. Hungary won the gameplay - zero.

Half of the Hungarian team could not go home and sought asylum in the US,

including the man with a blood coming down. He went on in the US to

become the coach of Mark Spitz, one of the greatest Olympians of all

time. Fascinating story. It sounds a bit 18- rated that one in 1956.

Thankfully, this is a bit more PG13. Let's see what is going on on BBC

One right now. They have got wall-to-wall coverage of Rio like

ourselves, and right now they are featuring the men's road race. Chris

Froome, three times Tour de France champion, he's trying to add to what

was a bronze medal that he won in a time trial in London 2012. He has

told us that that course there is tough, really tough. Next up on BBC

One, we will see Ashley McKenzie, the Commonwealth judo champion in

the 60 kilograms category taking to the mat for his first bout of the

games. But, if you choose to stay with us on BBC Four, thank you very

much indeed. We will try to keep you up-to-date with as much of the

action as possible over the course of our programme. We are going to

head back into the beige loading, the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre for

the second half of Serbia against Hungary. It is not having six as we

start the second half. So let's handover to commentator.

This will be Hungary moving from right to left. And an opportunity,

one more time. They are not wasting any time. We've all strike from

Norbert Hosnyanszky. How the light that? -- lethal strike, how do you

like that? You can see the acknowledgement from the Serbian

Inderal. He was beaten quickly, and there was nothing he could have done

about that one, Slobodan Nikic. That is a momentum shift. Without doubt,

it was in favour of Hungary as it was in that late strike from Kis at

the end of the first half, book ending each half for Hungary. And

they have been great defensively. The hand going up. It is lofted

beyond the confines and the official waiting for the ball to be brought

back in. Just getting away from the Serbian. And Hungary are looking

more and more comfortable. Very subtle, these battles that go

on. Just trying to win favour in the call.

Gets himself involved in the match, Nikic.

The feed is central, that has been a dangerous area. They have drawn the

exclusion against Serbia. The quick play and the feed is in

and it is pounced on. The delivery is right on the mark.

This game is kept within touch now. Back within three.

He thought he was coming off for a substitution, but he will remain.

Works to get back into a centre defence position there.

Hungary are in all blue as they come forward.

Quick shot, but the save is made just off the post. It will return to

Hungary. Conquer it looking as comfortable as

they have in this match so far. We will have to do reload. Inside of 15

seconds and just ten seconds remaining now. They will need to

work quickly. They were able to do that at the end of the first half.

Pijetlovic settled that one down. It is a major foul.

Serbia just off-loading and toying with his Hungarian defence, but they

are stripped of the ball. What looked to be the moment of truth in

front where they were going to release the shot, and they have

given it up, quite cheaply, really. Hungary looked really strong for

their lead. It is not a fluke by any stretch of imagination.

The save their made by the left hand of Pijetlovic. It settle things down

for his side. It was labelled for the inside of

the right post. It is advantage play for Hungary.

Serbia sensing an opportunity to try to win it back, but they will have

to relent. Still anticipating the shot.

It is that play from behind that is the quick whistle. Pijetlovic has

the support of his men back into play, and what a save he makes. He

was in a good position. It was his right arm this time. He

will get himself recorded with another save. He has been strong.

This, a chance to bring it within two. Serbia really need to make a

Right now in this third period. What a shot! It sizzled in from the left

hand of their number ten forward. That is Filipovic with the strike of

delivery towards the goal. Just what the doctor ordered for the

Serbians. This is a game that is changing.

That literally just blew the left-hand right past with the force

of the ball into the back of the Hungarian goal.

Filipovic a real linchpin in this one.

His second goal of the match. An opportunity now for the Hungarians

to start to be a little more strategic with a substitution. This

is getting into maybe a little bit of the tactical stage of the match.

It looked that way when it was four goals, the difference, but now back

to two. Filipovic looks for his best option to try to move it forward. He

has been patient. His team have now re-established themselves in the

offensive half of the field of play. The Serbians now looking encouraged.

Nagy did not need to make the save. The goal frame was wide enough to

keep that at bay. Each of these sequences up and back are very

instrumental in the final tally at the end of 32 minutes.

Back and forth, the appealing from the Hungarian coach and the exhale

of delight from the Serbian in goal. From the outside! Look at the divine

strike of the Serbian attack. It was a long range delivery. Cuk

has absolutely delivered a most impacting strike was Serbia. They

are within one and the game is changing. Milos Cuk has got his side

right within touching distance. This is a test for certain of the

mettle that the Hungarians have. Do they -- can they take the pressure?

They will have the benefit of an extra player and there will now be a

time-out called by the Hungarians. They will reload and discuss their

approach in the remaining portion of this third period.

Three-time Olympic gold medallist, Benedek. Leader of this team. This

is a sequence for Hungary in the open match of these real Olympics,

where they really need to be able to execute their game plan -- Rio

Olympics. A little bit of sunshine is coming across the water at the

Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre in Rio. Inside the last minutes, you know

when you see it there that that was a plan that didn't quite get done.

Everything in preparation for this shot was on the mark, but that is

heads up water polo. Now a time-out is called by the Serbians. They will

take advantage of a chance here to get back level and they have not

been level since the early stages of this match. They fell down quickly

with that opening sequence and this now is a challenge for Hungary. They

have enjoyed the spoils of being in a strong position throughout the

entirety of this match. What will be the story of this possession?

It was a quick possession and it was taken by Svivos to open up the

scoring. Serbia have been in the Trail in this match ever since. They

have a chance to level. They will await a good shot.

That effort was not quite potent enough, it just goes over the

crossbar and beyond it will beat Hungary trying to counter attack

late in this third period. They spin out of the defensive force of

Serbia, and have drawn the exclusion.

They took advantage. Hungary will take control once again and it is an

offensive strike. It means everything. The Hungarians

know it. Precious seconds counting down it has been turned over. The

whistle is blown. The official wanting to reassert that it is going

to be Nagy that will give it up. What a story to tell. A lead coming

into that second half almost evaporates for Hungary, but in the

end that important goal. ORE ODUBA: so, Hungary leading by 11 goals to

nine against Serbia who have just one more eight minute period to go

to try to close that gap or even go one ahead. This is a great way to

kick off our Olympics coverage, isn't it? A real batch. Absolutely.

In the middle of that game, he said this will tie the Hungarian resolve,

the way Serbia came back. They closed it back down to one and then

you saw Hungary proved they have that resolve. The second time into

quarters that Hungary have come and got a goal with seconds left and

just opened that gap up again a little bit. Other teams in this

tournament will beware in best thinking to themselves, this is

great, this is exactly what we wanted. These two, seven bells out

of each other in the first game of the tournament might make our lives

easier. Croatia and the USA are playing next, both looking for

medals. The longer this goes on, the tougher it is for them, the easier

for us. You've been really impressed with the goalkeeping in a

high-scoring game. It is such a tough sport to be a

goalkeeper in. The athleticism that you need, there is so much going on

around you, your movement is restricted, it is physical, and

sometimes you just get a bit lucky. It is all about positioning. If it

goes off your head and you didn't see it coming, it is still not then

the back of the net. Whatever it works, just get in the way of the

you with what has been going on in the rowing and the men's single

sculls because Alan Campbell of Great Britain has been going in

that, he did well, qualified third fastest in his heat, meanwhile, the

reigning champion, Mahe Drysdale of New Zealand, qualified in first

place. We can go back to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre with Hungary

leading Serbia 11-9 in the water polo, and we rejoin Brent.

That is a small thing that counts for so much at the end of the match.

And with all things are the difference at world-class level --

little things. They retain it, they cannot shoot it as yet. One more

time and there is an almighty struggle right in front of the

Serbian goal, and Serbia win it back. What a powerhouse of force

there. There is Mandic, defensively, doing an outstanding job against the

Hungarian forwards. The exclusion, the grasping on the back of the

player leading to the man advantage for Serbia, can they come back

within one? What a strike, as the Serbian pounce when given the

opportunity. Slobodan Nikic will Bolli that one, one-handed, into the

Hungarian gall, and all sorts of struggle. And the finish is richer

perfect, on the money. -- the Hungarian goal. That is the answer

to the late goal at the end of the third period. His first goal of

these Rio Olympics. And this has every chance of going either way,

still. It is a wrestling match, isn't it? It is nothing short of it.

When and how will the shot come? Those are the only questions. 20

seconds on the scoring clock. To the outside, and they've scored,

Hungary, again, very comfortable with their captain, Denes Varga, the

29-year-old, delighted with his tally, and jubilant in celebration.

It is all happening in front. Hungarian with just enough strength

to keep control, and there was nothing that Pijetlovic could do

about that shot. This was no fluke. Hungary have scored first and they

have scored often. Saved again by the Hungarian is, and Nagy

encourages his team on. An emotional leader. And his team now all return

to offensive positions. This is the swing point, isn't it, to be able to

take the lead, three points. And the whistle in favour of Serbia. They

will take control of this ball. And all of the work, each stroke to get

back into an area into which best to defend. The Serbians need to

restructure and try to get into a better formation offensively. The

Hungarians penalised. Norbert Hosnyanszky has scored a couple of

key goals. Look at that goal, and the Serbians are still right on the

doorstep. Just crashed into the back of the goal of Nagy, and he cannot

extend to reach to that. That was like a judo Chop across the back

from the Serbian, and a perfect delivery.

But was Milos Cuk, getting the credit for that one.

It is Nikic who gets the record of the goal for Serbia. They are within

one and five minutes remaining in this half. You will see every trick

in the book from both of these sides to retain advantage, or to try and

regain it. Hungary, from the outside with that man advantage, they are in

a great position to shoot, they elect not to, they will be patient

and use this shot clock as much as the game clock. It is denied, and

the Serbians retain control. Coming back into the pool, you sense a

little bit of a momentum change. Pijetlovic just gets enough, the

fingertip touch the elevate the ball beyond the crossbar. And this, you

sense, is a game changing possession for the Serbians. And they know it!

It goes in two different directions before hitting the right post, and

Nagy may be more lucky than good in that particular sequence. Just

enough of a touch from the defender to deny the shot. The shot came in,

but it wasn't a clean one. And that is ever the difference. Another

opportunity for Hungary to re-establish a 2- goal lead. They

have given it up quite easily, and you can ill afford that at this

stage of the match. A turnover foul. And that will prove potentially

costly as Serbia right now do not need too many indications in which

to try and regain level pegging in this match. Outside that five metre

line. An exclusion foul against Svivos, and he will make his way out

of the pool. That was a major foul, three of them, and that has led to

his exclusion from the remaining portion of this match. The official

on the far side of the pool with the ball, awaiting clearance to return

to action, and he is buckled up and ready to go. Here are the Serbians

with the chance to level this match in the important finishing, business

end of the 32 minutes, as we work from the outside to the near the

shot expected at any moment, you will take it? The anticipation,

where will the delivery go? Inside that left post, and Filip Filipovic

has been illegal for the Serbians. The punishing left-handed, sizzling

stroke -- has been lethal for. And you see the work going on off of the

play, but this is an explosion of power. And Nagy is beaten clearly.

That man, triumphant, has levelled this at 12. Three goals from his

nine opportunities. He would have loved a more efficient return, but

you talk about big goals at the big time, and you need those, and Serbia

have just got one. That shot clock slipping away from Hungary. You feel

the change in the complexion of this game. It is choppy waters now for

Hungary. The long, extended arm defensively, and Serbia just

thrusting themselves in front of the Hungarian shooters. Every inch of

the Battle continues in front of the Serbian goal, and it will be

retained from the Hungarian study outside. They will push forward.

Moving the ball around, so much defensive work to stay aloft, and

strong and upright. Look at the shot, it is work, right around the

horn and Hungary have struck gold with a big one there. And that is a

massive arrival, to a 13th goal. My goodness. They work it around the

outside and the shot again, that ever dangerous left-handed strike

from Martin Ramos. He has been right on the money. And he delivers what

could be a decisive goal in this one. -- Vamos. That is his second

goal. Both of them have been memorable. One from a long distance

earlier in the first half, and now this one, late in the second. Serbia

winning the ball back after giving it up quite easily. They needed

that, and this game, ever in the balance. Varga giving over that

turnover -- that turnover foul. Serbia, from the outside. This is a

sequence in which they need to execute, they know it, and it is off

the bar. They can retain control, they have reloaded the 32nd shot

clock. -- the 30-2nd shot clock. It is a minute, and the countdown

continues. It is a 1- goal differential, and Hungary have done

just enough to keep it out, it is deflected onto the frame by Nagy,

and this could be decisive. Nagy with enough of a touch, and it goes

for the crossbar, and stays out of the Hungarian goal. And is that the

difference in this match, as the time-out is called, and a chance for

the Hungarian is to settle down the troops, as they will take this

possession, and as much as they would love to score, they do not add

up the ball easily, and allow a Serbian counter attack, and

instructions now coming in from Tibor Benedek. He is asserting the

plan for his side from the edge of the pool in the Maria Lenk Aquatics

Centre. An elite -- and a late counter

attack here from the Hungarians. Nagy substituted. In is his

counterpart. This is all about game management for the Hungarians. They

will just work this clock down, they have been doing a great job so far.

miraculous from Serbia to take control back?

So much going on right now, the whistle is blown and the officials

reassert themselves in the closing stages of this match. That was the

injury to Nagy, leading to the substitution. He gets some work on

the sidelines here. All that goes on under the water that you do not see.

What a tremendous exertion of energy is a water polo match, and

particularly this one will stop it has been tense and it has been the

Serbians under all manner of pressure as they are expected as the

favourites. They are down by one and this is their last formulation of a

game plan to try to level this one, try to walk away with at least one

on the board and four seconds remaining. Serbia have looked to

have done the impossible, but it is the improbable, as they are the

expected, probable gold medallists. They showed how capable they are as

the powerful delivery once more from the hammerhead of Filipovic has

brought a fourth goal from him personally today. The 13 for his

team and time will slip away in this match. That is where the match will

stay. 13 goals apiece for Serbia and Hungary in men's water polo in Pool

A action. That was not the anticipated results. The Hungarians

are pleased, but they were in a great position to put claim to all

of the points in this opening match. That's the way it will finish.

rugby sevens been contested at the Olympic Games. France and Spain have

the honour of opening the women's event. After that, we will stay on

site at the Diadora to see Ireland take on five-time champions in India

-- India. Fresh from her victory, Heather Watson starts her Olympic

singles campaign. We will see that before we return to the man's

hockey. Maximum points against Belgium is the plan for Great

Britain, aiming to get their campaign off to the perfect start.

And we will get a first look at our guys in the gymnastics. Matt

Whitlock and his band of brothers one bronze four years ago. They will

have their eye on the next step up at least. The rest of our afternoon

is looking at this -- looking like this. Next up, beach volleyball.

Things have really come to life here on the Olympic Park. You can see

people are running. They are running to get to their destination. Why? I

don't know. Some are going to the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, but most

of them are heading this way to what looks like the Aquatic Centre. We

are going to see plenty of swimming kicking off later on this afternoon

from about 1pm our time, 4pm your time or five o'clock, I should say.

I'm going to get my maths wrong over the course of these two weeks. Let's

had to Beach Volleyball Arena sports synonymous with this country, not

least because the first ever World Championships was held here in Rio

and also with 11 medals, our host country are the most decorated in

Olympic history. It will be a popular sport. Let's check in on the

12,000 seater arena on Copacabana Beach. The world number one pair,

the Brazilians, they will take to the sand in about one hour, maybe

less. You will be able to see them on BBC One, I should think. The

curtain raiser will see Italy take on Austria. We will join it in the

first game. Best of three. It is the best of 21, and if they decide is

needed, first to 15. We will see Italy taking on Austria. Italy

currently lead 12-8. Over to our commentator.

their strategies and how they have settled in to the first set.

Maybe just clipping the net on the way down. It was a close call, but

it has gone to Austria. Straight off the set. That was a

powerful hit. Ranghieri is really taking control

of the skies. Dominant in the air. See what the Austrians can do now to

get back into this first set. Good momentum for Austria. They need

it right now. The Austrians point the finger at

the Italians. It will go to the challenge referee. The challenge on

the block touch. It could save them the set point here. As it stands,

I'm glad it is not my job. That is all I'm saying. Very difficult 1 to

call. Unsuccessful challenge. This is set point to Italy, 20-14, and it

will be the man born in Montevideo, Uruguay, to take the serve, Adrian

Carambula. They have called a time-out. They were all set to go.

Both the Italians living in Rome, Adrian Carambula born in Montevideo,

moved to the US when he was 13, but started representing the Italians at

beach volleyball through his Italian grandmother. Now, Austria have got

to go out and try to save set point on the sands of Copacabana.

So, first set, first blood to Italy, and we are going to join the

coverage now with the Italians leading in the second game as well,

the score now 11-7. Let's rejoin Peter Blackburn.

The crowd love it, don't they? Just going wide, there. They will have

picked up a few points, with a handy 5-point lead. Great Birds Eye view

from the sky ball. Great defence. Starting to run away with it, the

Italian pair, 13-7, took the first set 21-14. It is that unique style

they have, which challenges some of the most experienced players in the

game. The Austrians just finding it hard to control. Here we go again.

Great rally, and a great finish again by Ranghieri, both players

working hard to control the ball, great movement round the court.

No stopping shots like that, straight down into the sand.

Setting themselves points targets, almost, the Italians, as they take

to the court once again. They are brimming with confidence, they are

running out there, ready to go. The assistant setting up those lines

again. They have got a very handy lead, 14-7. The sky ball again.

Ranghieri at the front court, taking the opportunity when the ball was

short. 15-7, now. Now, the crowd starting to get into this, cheering

as the sky ball drops. The Austrians were here in the world tour event

earlier this year and they took a sample of the sand and padded

replicated in Vienna. They have been practising on the Rio sand back in

Vienna. Not helping them so far, though. Lovely control at the front

court again from Carambula. He has played so well, look at that, lovely

control. The Austrian pair needed that. From

the centre of the court. They didn't need that, though. Straight into the

net. 17-9 now to the Italians, if they get 21 points they win the

match. It is only a pool game but what a way to start. He tried the

regular serve, there, Carambula. He is not conventional, that is for

sure. The service points in this game,

that is just stretching the pressure on the server. Sometimes, it just

brings out the errors. Ranghieri tends to just nudge it over the net,

so he can then get in for the block. He has done fantastic, it is almost

like serve and volley in tennis for Ranghieri, he gets ready for the

spike, and he can get there immediately to block it. I think

they are enjoying themselves! That was a nice finish from Austria. The

question is, it is a big gap that they have got to pick up. And little

time and points in which to do it. Italy, two points away from winning

the match. They picked up that one. They only need a good run here.

Carambula brings up match point. With that strike down the line. Not

bad, eight match points. Second match point for the Italians.

Oh, there it is! What a way to finish the match, with an entirely

unconventional... Everybody thought Carambula was going to set up

Ranghieri and he just popped it into the empty court. The Italians are

celebrating, victory in two straight sets, gives them confidence in the

first round, the preliminaries, the first step to the last 16 they have

come into the competition in good form, two wins in the world tour

this year, in Turkey and in Qatar and they continue that form of a

reasonably comfortable victory, you have to say. Everyone thinks that he

is going to set up Ranghieri, and he just nudges it over the net. Great

start of the competition in the men's beach volleyball for Italy

beating Austria 2-0. Hopefully we will see more of that on our

programme. The women's is still to come. We're having a great time here

on the park. We are next going to show the rugby sevens which is

taking place 20 kilometres north, at Diadora. France taking up Spain

next, then Great Britain against the hosts, Brazil, that will be about

4pm your time on BBC One. My watch says 20 to 11! Before they came out

to Brazil, the Great Britain girls caught up with my colleague Charlie

Stayt to experience their training. Sevens is a game of speed, pace and

agility, and it is also about the power. The game is brutal, to be

honest. It is fast paced. You have all of the normal bits of the XV

game, the compact, but they are all a bit smaller. You have to be super

fit to play sevens. Some people think about rugby players and they

think about bulk, maybe. Look at me, definitely not! You are really quite

slight. Lots of the sevens players are quite slim. It is more of a fast

game, it is about fitness. You don't have to be big to play sevens. In

your sport, what is the big rivalry? I don't know, maybe Wales and

England. But that is not relevant on this occasion, because you are all

in one team. We came in and bonded so well with all the girls.

Obviously you have rivalry between England, Scotland and Wales and we

wondered what the interaction in the squad would be like, but everybody

has accepted everybody and they are all great friends, so that helps the

coaches a lot. Rugby sevens is brand-new to this year's Olympic

Games. It is a wonderful opportunity for the sport to be seen by millions

worldwide, and Team GB are really up for the challenge. We are building

to the Olympics at the end of the year, we have won a tournament, we

have been further couple of times so the girls are in a really good

place. We put all the planning in place and execute the best of our

ability, then we have got a great chance to medal. It is such a great,

inclusive sport, to be put alongside the great events of the Olympics. Do

you think you might get gold? We are just fine to get there at the

moment. Every time I see Charlie taking those hits, it hurts me! Now,

we are going to head over to the Diadoro Stadium and join Rob. You

see the rugby sevens year after year, it is about time that the

Olympic audience got to enjoy this. They are in for a treat, aren't

they? Yes, perfect format for the Olympic Games, high-energy and a

feast of action. In the women's, Australia are the reigning world

Series champions but New Zealand have won the most times, three

times. Is that the final we are expecting see? It'll be hard pushed

to be different to that. New Zealand are the dominant force physically.

They so imposing. Australia set the standard with amazing passing skills

to shift the ball to stay away from the sizeable New Zealand players,

but in a game such as this, the team plays such a part. Sometimes it

comes down to being a little bit bigger, and it will be a good

contest between those two body can't write off Team GB and Canada.

Team GB are led by Emily scarring. In England, anyway, they qualified

fourth. I be in with a chance of a medal? Yes. They have consistency

and playing together. 11 of the players are from the English setter.

We throw in a Welsh girl, an English coach, a Welsh coach coming

together, and they have a long shot at this. They have been together for

six or seven months preparing for this one event as well as going

through the whole series. They are well-placed, absolutely physically

on point and are going to embrace this tournament and showcase their

skills, as well. Looking forward to seeing them later. What about France

and Spain? 50 versus eighth seed. You expect France to take this? I

would do. Are part-time players. Coming together from a group of

students and nurses. They also have the only female firefighter. They

are against sizeable people and they throw their weight around. That's

for sure. With weight and speed it will be on fire at the Diadora.

GB campaign pins race against Brazil. The women arrived around

Wednesday last week and I got to catch up with them and the athletes'

village. They are really excited. If you want a little locator, or a

The athletes village for around 10,000 athletes from more than 200

countries around the world. This is their first step towards winning an

Olympic. Not least for our friends, Team GB towers. Let's see how they

are getting on. Hello. Got the shot. Rugby sevens girls are

in the house. They seem in pretty good spirits. Why wouldn't they be?

They have union jack deckchairs down there. I love what you've done with

the place. The great thing about an Olympic villages you pretty much get

a bare space and it is your allotment to do what you like with.

train and compete together. This is our sixth trip out here now as the

Olympic squad, so we have bonded really well and so far we haven't

had any major issues. All right coming here are. What about... I've

got two. Do you mind if I...? It has been changed today. And now tainted,

I'm afraid. If it's anything like London, you will probably see a lot

of athletes with these flying low. Team GB will be taking those bed

sheets home with them. We shall see, we shall see. There you have it, the

village in all its glory. And by the sounds of it, according to the

athletes, Team GB is definitely ready for Alexander Horst.

I promise not to make a habit of laying in Team GB beds during the

course of this games. We will head off to the Diadora now, because the

shooting is set to give us the first gold medal of the games. Four years

ago, exactly that, it happened in the ten metre women's air rifle. The

honour went to China. China went on to win seven shooting medals during

the games, but who will take the top step in the first of the

championships? The American is currently leading the championship.

Let's go to the National shooting Centre just now and as we approach

the closing stages, enjoying our meditator, Richard Drew. -- joining

our commentator. Keeping calm, shooting, sometimes

they say between heartbeats. Sometimes the heartbeat starts to

race and just about harming that down. It is that concentration,

block everything out. Try not to look at the monitor in front of them

to know what the score is. 10.3 is good, but could do with that

10.8 to get into second. Not allowed to load it ahead of the jury. That

is first and second. Very, very tight. Two more shops to see who

will take bronze. Well, it is Thrasher's gold medal to

lose. What a story that would be. Particularly managing to beat the

And 9.8 from Yi. Goodness me, the defending Olympic champion could get

bronze. 10.8, excellent under pressure. It is confirmed, she had

the gold, of in London. Looking to beat the first ten metre air rifle

athlete to take two golds. It is not to be, and Yi Siling takes third and

takes the bronze. Such an accomplished athlete. That

is another medal for her to add to that London gold. Had to give up

shooting in 2004 because of the cost, her coach promised to cover

expenses and I'm sure they are delighted with another medal for Yi

Siling from the People's Republic of China. Two more shops to decide who

takes gold. If Thrasher keeps calm, cool, and shooting like she has, she

should be OK. However, she hasn't shot in the nines since... She has

only shot one and that was her second shot of this whole condition.

Since then, it has been in the tens. Can she continue in that great form?

10.5 solid, that will see her good. Yi Siling needed to do something

spectacular. She took care time, but she has equalled it. Unless

something extraordinary happens to Thrasher, surely the American will

take gold. She really was not on the radar. Packed into this Diadora

venue to see what will happen. Last shot of this women's ten metres air

rifle. It all comes down to this. One more

shot to decide who takes gold, who takes silver.

She has a crush on, Thrasher. Let's see what she can do here. She looks

so calm. 10.4 should be enough. Look at the smile now and the exhalation

of breath. Du still concentrating. Can she finish in style? 10.1, it is

good but not good enough. We have our first gold medallist of the Rio

Olympics and it is Thrasher, just 19 and a half years of age. She has

surprised everyone to take gold here in Rio.

ORE ODUBA: you saw that puff of air coming out of Thrasher. A little

sigh of relief. She is the new Olympic champion in the women's air

rifle ten metre. The first gold of the games goes to America. Let's

look at our very first medal table, shall we? It makes fantastic reading

for the USA. There they are, sitting proudly atop the table fangs to

Thrasher's gold. Two medals for China with the defending champion

ORE ODUBA: -- Yi Siling winning bronze. Du got silver. Everyone else

has catching up to do. We are up and running. We have medals. We are

going to stay here right now because it is time to kick off the rugby

sevens tournament. It is its Olympic debut at Rio 2016 and everybody who

is lucky to have a ticket is really in for a treat. The man kick-off

next week. It is the women starting things today and for the next three

days. Let's see how the team's matchup in the women's competition.

12 teams broken down into three pools of four with the top two and

the best two third placed teams going on. Anything than the last

eight would be disappointed or France and Spain. They opening the

competition. Let's see you can take the spoils in the very first sevens

game of the games in the company of Sir Clive Woodward and Eddie Butler.

COMMENTATOR: Women's rugby sevens, never played here before, but it

takes its place here in Rio. We are quite a long way upcountry. It is

France playing Spain, the favourites. Good morning, Sir Clive

Woodward. It is wonderful to be here, wonderful for the first

Olympic Games, and away we go. The referee is Amy Pert of Australia.

Spain have the first kick in rugby sevens at the Olympics, and it is

well taken. The captain of France is one of the speedsters on the

outside. The normal rugby laws apply, of course there are reduced

numbers, from 15 down to seven. We have scrums, line-outs, rocks,

mauls, and a knock-on, as we saw there. It is a shame, France will be

disappointed because that was a real chance. Spain are ranked eighth in

the world. Three pools, four teams in each. Winners, runners-up, they

go through automatically, and the best two third placed teams. So even

if you lose there is the chance to grab one of the first-place spots.

It's a penalty to France. That's a shame, because Vanessa real workers

-- Ana Vanessa Rial was posed... Something has moved from the 15

aside into the seven side game. A small knock-on. Again, the

importance of the scrum is to get a quick and clean ball away. The

halfbacks were putting one another under pressure, a better scrum from

the French there. Shannon Isa. -- Shannon Izar, the

first outbreak with good cover from Spain. Marina Bravo Bragado, and

France, is this going to be the first try in sevens Olympic rugby?

It is. France scored the first try. Try for France! Marjorie Mayans

scored the first try in the Olympic Games for France, it's a wonderful

try from the French. Showing typical French handling skills with a lot of

movement. These kicks are important, and a great tribe from Marjorie

Mayans. I don't know but she is called Queen of the tackles, she is

a big tackle, but what an achievement for her. The first lady

to score a try in the Olympic Games. Wonderful from France. There is an

injury down here... One of the slight changes from 15s to sevens

rugby. The team that scores restarts with the kick-off. Pauline Biscarat.

France have made a replacement. Restarts are everything, when you

score committee give the ball away. In the kick-off, it's whether the

French can restart this from Horta's kick. It may have been Pauline

Biscarat that score... Spain are on the move, France are aggressive.

Pauline Biscarat again. A switch of play. The way it comes to deduct

that was good from Ribero Garcia. Cannot take the scrum half out of

play. That was quickly taken by Elisabet Martinez, and a small

knock-on. That was a shame from the Spanish point of view, a little bit

panicked there EU just had to hold onto the ball. The pass is on, she

panics a bit, and a is given. France get the all-important possession in

this game. It's early days in the tournament.

At the Deodoro Stadium, not fooled by any means, but -- not fall by any

means. But it is a long way from Rio, among the hills in a huge

military encampment. Equestrian is up here, slalom,

canoeing, hockey. And, this rugby stadium. Biscarat takes it quickly

for France... On the wide outside. Lina Guerin manages the off-load.

REFEREE: It is a tackle assist. It's a penalty to France.

The set play... I watched the French training in the

mountains in France, they will be fit. They did a lot of set play work

against Team GB. This is a chance. It is going to be a try

for Lina Guerin. Great set play, moving the ball up to Lina Guerin,

scoring the second try. The width of the game here, there is

too much pace here for the French team.

It is a wonderful try. All kicks in rugby sevens are

drop-kicks, conversions. A good effort from wide out, that was an

early over. France are leading by 12-0. Seven minutes each way. If

that does not sound much, it is exhausting! It's an array big game,

this. Fitness really comes in handy, these girls have put a lot of

training into this, to get ready for today. Biscarat starts.

Here is a little variation, the kick

ahead and it is well taken. Spain are on the move. Martin is in

possession, that was good from Vanessa real, the scrum-half. -- Ana

Vanessa Rial. It's a penalty to Spain. Quickly

taken, and we are off again. There we go, half-time, France 12-0.

An interesting first half, I think that it's a bit more physical than

the Spanish team, the Spanish team have seven players in the squad over

the age of 30. They looked fit enough but

physicality, especially at the breakdown, there were a couple of

turnovers and France court two good tries. They should be pleased,

France are ranked fifth, Spain eighth. As you can see. The Spanish

girls kept going for the Olympics, it was announced a few years ago.

Many of them were on the brink of retirement, and yet, they came and

delayed the decision because the chance to come here to the Rio

Olympics. That applies across the board in the men's and women's game.

Two tries from France, the second by Lina Guerin. The coach of Spain, and

the French coach has been there six years, from the start. Keeping the

team together. You have to remember France were the Six Nations

champions this year, on the 15 aside game, a lot of players were involved

in that at the Six Nations. But you have a very experienced coach here.

Just coming off... A few players limping around, it is tough out

there, in the heat and tough physically. The Spanish have put on

a good show. They want to win this, France have

two tries, they put on a pretty good show.

Pauline Biscarat should start the second half, France are leading 12-0

Spain, the restarts are important but that is easy enough for Spain to

reclaim. Barbara Pla, taking it into contact.

That's a penalty against Spain. Spain off their feet at the

breakdown. We are going to have a line-out. Interesting tactics, I

think they want a breather. Coming to the line-out. As long as they win

it, that was a good call, but in rugby sevens you don't see that

often, 40 yards out and then you go to a line-out, it's a bit of a

lottery but hopefully France can win it and make the right decision.

Three in the line-out for France... Well taken. It's a chance for Lina

Guerin on the outside, it is the break... Carolyn the darkness.

-- Caroline Ladagnous, a great try. A very powerful runner. You can see

when she gets the ball on the outside, with Elodie Guiglion on.

That is a really good try. You have to defend well, with people up

against players of this pace and power.

That was excellent, that conversion from Pauline Biscarat. France are

now 19-0 up against Spain. I don't think Vanessa Rial will put that in

her tackling portfolio. The scoring team takes the restart.

So France. Back in the hands of the French. Biscarat watches it

carefully. Switching play with a little run...

Horta, the French captain. Stolen by Spain, a chance now for their first

try of the game. Forward, the referee had a good look. Spain is

still in possession. Barbara Pla, slumming it all down. Then

accelerating, up to the 22. -- slamming away.

This is quickly taken. So quickly taken, France were in no position to

defend but not strong enough to prevent the try from Patricia. A

wonderful try. You had to say, when the penalties came, tap and go, tap

and go. That was great. What a moment for Patricia. They will be

delighted with that, it's a big comeback for the Spanish team. They

kept that going, tap and go, and that speed.

You cannot defend against it. That conversion is good, Spain are up to

seven points, 19-7, France leading. You would expect the Spanish to be

good at convergence and drop goals, that was a great drop goal.

Seven points on the board, well done to Spain. Scoring a try and

converting it. Garcia comes back to take the restart. She is a key

player. She is showing what a good player shears, keeping the speed of

the game up, fantastic and trying to get as much hyped on the restart as

possible. Allowing a challenge. -- what a good player she is.

A good tackle. The ball is not out of play.

Elodie Guiglion with a bit of physical contact. Good movement off

the ball. Short and long. Elodie Guiglion is off again, support from

Elodie Guiglion and she is strong enough and fast enough to make it to

the line. A wonderful try. What is impressive is the skill of the

ladies here. Watching the width they are putting on the game and their

left hand is excellent. The off-loads and the tackle makes this

such a great game. We will not be up applauding for the rucks and mauls,

we just have the off-loads. That is a wonderful try. Elodie Guiglion

scored the try. A conversion just slides wide by Pauline Biscarat.

Well delivered. That was an important tackle but it was an

illegal one. Spain will pick up the pieces from this. It will be quickly

certainly the player that has kept the Spanish team going. Spain are

What a great way to kick off the women's competition.

Yes, a lovely piece of history to see rugby introduced back into the

Olympics. 1924 was the first time the -- last time the 15 game was

played so it is great to see rugby reintroduced and the women's sevens

have taken the torch and created a little piece of Olympic history. It

is a pleasure to be there to witness it. It is great to see you down

there, Matt, we have a busy day of action in the women's competition.

Give us an idea of what we can look forward to next. The next match, we

have just seen Spain against France and next we have Kenny against New

Zealand. New Zealand are a runaway favourite in the women's competition

and a few minutes after that it will be Team GB against the hosts,

Brazil. It is a long day of group stage games but we are hoping that

GB will make a winning start to that and continue the habit in the next

few days here at the Deodoro. Tell us a bit more about the venue.

Plenty of the venues have a green theme which sticks with the national

colours but that grass looks good enough to touch. It is absolutely

beautiful. Do not take too much impact on the number of seats or

tickets who have been sold here, there is a posse of spectators

behind at the camera can't see in the stand up here but we are hoping

through the session today and in the few days on in the competition,

these seats will fill up as the days go, because obviously sevens is just

match after match after match and it is a fantastic atmosphere already

and we hope you will philatelist more than what we can see already at

Four. Ireland and their 100 year wait in the hockey as the men take

on India and we will be with them very soon. Wimbledon mixed doubles

champion Heather Watson starts her Olympic singles campaign. Staying

with the hockey it is a must win game for written against Belgium in

pool A. And closing our programme we will take a trip to the Rio arena to

see if the men's British gymnastics team can qualify for the finals.

They really ought to and it will be a disappointment if they don't. Just

to recapitalise here is how the next few hours look for you. Ireland

against India is next and then we have the men's hockey as well. We

will seek Belgium against great Britain and then Team GB will be

taking to the podium for the gymnastics. Come with us for a bit

of a walk. We have amassed the most humongous queue here on the Olympic

Park. We are going to show tennis a bit later and we will see the mixed

doubles champion from Wimbledon in action, Heather Watson, maybe this

is what they are all after. I could ask them but they looked very busy

trying to get the best seat in town. Instead we will go from the Olympic

Park here and back to the Deodoro where we will talk hockey. We have

real medal hopes for both the great Britain men and women but for

Ireland, they are in uncharted territory. They have been for the

last 100 years. They will take on India, a team with real Olympic

pedigree. Five times the men have taken the title in this competition.

As we look at how the groups are split in the hockey, there are 12

teams in two groups of six. The top for progress to the quarterfinals.

Ireland are one of the lower ranked teams but they will fancy their

chances of qualifying out of group B. The match started a little

earlier and we will join it in the second quarter, but there wasn't a

goal scored in the first quarter, by India. This is the very last action

and as you can see right on the buzzer India take the first plug in

that quarter. It is a change to the format from London 2012, they now

play four quarters of 15 minutes. So, let us join it in the second

corner after we see how India whipped their way in that penalty

corner to take the lead and they lead by 1-0. We will see how the

second quarter goes in the company of Erin Murphy.

We're underway in the second period. India won and no score for Ireland.

A goal already. Jackson shows good hands as he dribbles around. India

try to transition. Jonathan Jackson read it well. John Jackson is

showing great prowess on the ball. Ireland Sleep Time on the ball. When

you are defending penalty corners like that it takes you out of your

off -- offensive rhythm and the coach will try to turn the tables

back for Ireland. Bell goes back out over the 23. Harte is trying to find

a scene and he gets it forward. A bit of skill there and flick between

the legs but he it away. India will happily take the turnover and break

up the right side. Here comes the captain of India to severe. . It

will be a long corner. India, you can see when they get those

turnovers that Ireland are trying to be cute and clever in the scoring

circle and India are happy to take those turnovers and a transition

through. They are coming at Ireland again. Here is Raghunath Vokkaliga.

It is his second Olympics and you cannot discount the experience up

and down this India line-up, including their coach who has got an

Olympic gold medal in his previous job at the Netherlands coach in

1996. Right now they are enjoying a 1-0 lead in the second period. 12.45

to go in the second part. Ireland have no score. Swept away by

Jonathan Bell. Ireland hemmed in their own in the 23. That will be a

free hit for the team Ireland. Here is Harte. To Jonathan Bell, up the

right side. Ireland are trying to find a same again and turn back

there. The right idea by Eugene Magee. He dances in with a shot. It

is up high and over the neck. That ball was well wide of the Indian

net. The right idea by Ireland at the shop was not on target. -- but

the shot was not on target. Ireland make some substitutions. Good use of

the substitutions. Everybody is fresh and hydrated which will be a

factor in the Brazilian heat. Harte as steady as a rock comes

plays for the Royal racing club in Belgium. Michael Darling turns the

ball over. A free hit from the 15 or thereabouts for India and they come

forward. It goes ahead to Raghunath Vokkaliga. He is the lone marksman

in this game in the men's hockey tournament. It is his 131st

international goal. You can see that he wants to attack and he wants to

test Ireland's resolve. He is reading the game well and he feels

that maybe he has got some space down the right-hand side but Ireland

have fresh legs and they are using their substitutions and they have

kept Raghunath Vokkaliga at bay except for that penalty strike, the

penalty goal. That was picked off by Darling...

But was good hands from Alan Sothern. A dangerous moment on the

attack 40 mile and right there. Good signs for them, as they try to get

one back here -- 4-team Ireland. India make a break down the

left-hand side, trying to make it 2-0, that was an incredible effort.

Look at the speed. Two on one situation, Harte takes the shooter

the whole way. And the shooter was coming down the

side... Just putting it wide. Nikkin with the chance, he puts it wide. It

remains 1-0. Kirk Shimmins... Dancing along the sideline, trying

to stay out of the green turf. Good defence from Ireland. German in two

double coverage here. India bringing in numbers, trying to hem Ireland in

their own zone. Magnificent pressure from India. Eight minutes 20 seconds

remaining in the first period. 20 remaining in the first half of

this contest. Raghunath with a penalty corner. Into the first

period, an exciting first period. Islands trying to find some offence.

Jackson ahead. John Jermyn to the other side. A

chance! Kyle Good could not find a handle but he got a chance, it's a

penalty corner, the first four Ireland. An excellent ball. A good

score in deed. You can see that was a good competing level from Kyle

Good who plays for months -- Munster. It does not work out

when they get the all-important penalty corner. Tying this contest

up against the fifth-ranked team in the world, India. The injector is

Kyle Good. Good, made the play happen. Causing that chance on the

penalty. Magnificent! 1-1, John Jermyn. Magnificent set piece from

Ireland, and John Jermyn will get his 91st international goal.

India are moving forward. Seven minutes to go in this half...

The goal was not awarded... Ireland protested, that was the right call

from the referee and it remains 1-0. Paul Gleghorne, they have two shake

that off and move forward. Islands down the side, Chris Cargo to

Jackson. That India's ball. Physically taken

off the ball, tripped by Alan Sothern. Perhaps trying to take some

liberties. We know that Cedaro Singh can be temperamental at times...

Perhaps trying to gain an advantage -- Sardara Singh. But it will not

work there. Conor Harte. Across the pitch, five minutes 40 seconds

remaining. Heart break for Ireland on that site

-- set piece. The goal was disallowed. Ireland

showed you that team ethos, when they get chances on short corners,

penalty corners, they can punish. Sreejesh...

They haven't tried to move the offence forward. Now, on cue, they

are in the scoring D, Raghunath tries to

move it forward. Five minutes to go in the second

quarter, and of course the first half, a fall of the pool B Mac

pool B action from the Deodoro Stadium. Magee to John Jermyn, who

thought he had scored and equalised on a penalty. He got his 91st

international goal, or so he thought.

Moving forward, a second penalty corner, can they get the same idea

and get the ball past Sreejesh? And make sure that there are no

a chance to get the ball on it. This is where the game is won, on these

tempo they set early in the first period. They had wave after wave,

coming forward against Ireland. Four penalty corners, they scored on

India, coming back for more. A free hit, given to India. Starting with

Quarterbacking the play, moving it steadily forward down the right-hand

side and trying to find a break of seam in the Irish resolve. Penalty

corners, we often see them in international hockey in the men and

women's games, it comes down to be set pieces. Ireland have had two.

But violations within the scoring D. They need a chance to get on the

board. India have had five and been successful twice, Raghunath in the

first quarter, Rupinder in the second. Two minutes to go in the

first half. WHISTLE Shane O'Donoghue... The cash deep

wants to substitute in for India. The head coach begins to use his

substitutes -- Akashdeep. Managing the heat and managing fresh legs on

both sides of the ball. It's imperative on day one. Harte... A

quick pass forward there by Sean O'Donoghue. -- Shane O'Donoghue, who

turns and retreats. India are happy to lob it high, and relieve the

pressure. Shane O'Donoghue plays in Belgium for the KHC Dragons. It's

another chance for Ireland, once again substitutions coming in on

Vasquez goes to the video umpire. Quickly ahead by Bell. Into his

feet. O'Donoghue, we wait for the referral. Paco Vasquez, an

electrical engineer and his day-to-day life. 130th cap as a

referee today. We are awaiting the referral. Akashdeep wants to come

off, and Manpreet Singh. For India. The late stages of the

first half. 58.6 seconds in this period.

Bell brings the ball forward. O'Donoghue at the top of the D.

Ireland are hoping that they will get the penalty corner. They are

awaiting the word. Vasquez, 58.6 seconds left in this half, Ireland

want to get something on the board, something positive, as time winds

down. Trailing by a couple of goals against India.

An incredible statistic. 62 Olympic titles for India between 1928 and

1956. It is an incredible milestone, eight

goals overall in Olympic history for India.

In 11 total medals, one silver, two bronze, but since 1980 they have not

had any luck. No penalty quarter, the referral

works in favour of team India. That's not what the head coach on

the Irish side would have wanted. It's the right call made, it looked

like it was at Shane O'Donoghue's feet.

India have 45 seconds remaining in the half and they want to be first

goal, they wanted to get a view on the board, so far so good for the

fifth ranked team in the world -- a view.

Ireland have a lot of work to do, 35 seconds left and they need to keep

their eye on the price defensively. Singh gets its back, Agnes and play

from HArte -- Harte. Akashdeep comes on with fresh legs. Watch Harte, as

quick as he can, moving so well for a big man. It is a penalty corner

once again, the sixth of the contest.

A second penalty quarter -- corner of the quarter.

The captain Sardara Singh will inject this ball. Panic stations,

troubled time for Ireland. A quick shot and a magnificent strike

blocked down and Ireland tried to transition. With just 11 seconds to

they are trying to find Darling in behind the defence. An incredible

action and to end there. Four seconds remaining in the half. Sunil

will hit it and it comes off an Irish lake. As the half and it is

India to, Ireland no score. In the second it was the first goal for

Rupinder Pal Singh. His first in the Olympics but his 56th overall

internationally. At the end of one half it is India two, Ireland no

score. That was always going to be a tough

ask for Ireland. They trailed by two goals to nil and they have 215

minute periods to try get back into the game. Before we get back to the

hockey in the second half we will rattle through some of the action

going on around the grounds right now. That's big queue that I showed

you before the hockey has moved on and they are all into the tennis

which is where we are going to go right now and there is loads of an
