against an opponent in Hakan Erseker who has literally boxed at the same

:00:00.:00:00.

pace, not upping the tempo or changing anything. It allows Hurshid

:00:00.:00:00.

Tojibaev to do what he wants in terms of dictating the pace, he is

:00:07.:00:11.

in his comfort zone, he has had harder spas, and he is quality, but

:00:12.:00:14.

has not been pushed at all this evening. Hakan Erseker, perhaps

:00:15.:00:20.

reluctant to try to up the tempo, even though it is the Olympic Games

:00:21.:00:24.

and a straight elimination tournament, this is not a round

:00:25.:00:29.

robin, but he's been hit hard and often, especially during the course

:00:30.:00:32.

of the second round, that could be why he is reluctant to close the

:00:33.:00:37.

gap. He may not be able to close the gap on an experienced operator like

:00:38.:00:42.

a 26-year-old Hurshid Tojibaev, but he is boxing on even terms at his

:00:43.:00:48.

own tempo, Hurshid Tojibaev, cruising around the perimeter of the

:00:49.:00:51.

boxing ring and engaging when he chooses.

:00:52.:00:57.

Hurshid Tojibaev is a quality kid. He has a super whipping shot. He has

:00:58.:01:05.

a very low guard and it is difficult to see whether punches are coming

:01:06.:01:12.

from. That is a little better. , Hakan Erseker has to do more on

:01:13.:01:18.

that. He is putting it under pressure. He is now on a comfort

:01:19.:01:33.

zone and comfort mode here. You pointed out how important it is to

:01:34.:01:37.

post oneself if you want to go deep into Olympic tournament and I think

:01:38.:01:42.

we have just witnessed a masterclass in pacing oneself during the course

:01:43.:01:47.

of the 60 kilograms contest. Hurshid Tojibaev hit his man hard early and

:01:48.:01:51.

got his respect and perhaps instilled a little bit of doubt into

:01:52.:01:55.

the mind of Hakan Erseker as well and then controlled things as he

:01:56.:01:59.

likes for many parts of that round. He was looking busy for not doing

:02:00.:02:03.

very much at all. Controlled it well and if you have to go four or five

:02:04.:02:08.

times to win an Olympics, you have got to pace yourself and that is

:02:09.:02:13.

what he has done. Tremendous stuff from Hurshid Tojibaev, he switches

:02:14.:02:16.

downstairs with that left up to the body and the right and over the top.

:02:17.:02:20.

His corner are very happy indeed. Yes, worthy winner.

:02:21.:02:34.

We're just waiting for the formality of an announcement that should see

:02:35.:02:42.

Hurshid Tojibaev progressed to the second round. Ladies and gentlemen,

:02:43.:02:49.

the winner by a unanimous decision... Hurshid Tojibaev.

:02:50.:03:05.

Hurshid Tojibaev of Uzbekistan, the tournament number three seed is true

:03:06.:03:09.

to the second round of the men's lightweight tournament with the

:03:10.:03:12.

minimum of fuss courtesy of a unanimous points decision victory

:03:13.:03:20.

over Hakan Erseker from Qatar. Thank you, we will be back up for

:03:21.:03:24.

the Joe Cordina fight in a few minutes. We have the Team GB in

:03:25.:03:33.

action throughout the evening in Rio. Tell us a bit about Joe Cordina

:03:34.:03:38.

first up. Well, they call him the Welsh Wizard

:03:39.:03:42.

and he is the only Welshman within the Team GB boxing squad and he has

:03:43.:03:47.

had a really good year, a couple of years, he won a bronze medal at the

:03:48.:03:50.

2014 commonwealths and he followed up last year by winning the European

:03:51.:03:54.

title so a really good run-up to this and he has actually said that

:03:55.:03:57.

he would be disappointed if he doesn't come away with gold, a bold

:03:58.:04:02.

statement, I think! Joe is fighting in the light weight decision, as we

:04:03.:04:08.

have just seen. Later on we have the heavyweight with Lawrence Okolie

:04:09.:04:13.

fighting for Team GB. What a story. Lawrence Okolie has just had 25

:04:14.:04:18.

fights up until this point, that is nothing really in terms of boxing

:04:19.:04:24.

and coming to the greatest show on Earth at the Olympics. You see him

:04:25.:04:28.

and he is fit and he is a heavyweight and really in shape but

:04:29.:04:31.

as a child he was at the centre used to get the lead. I don't think they

:04:32.:04:35.

are laughing at any more. He has done very well for himself as well.

:04:36.:04:39.

Another Team GB boxer that is very confident and will be expected to

:04:40.:04:42.

get the later stages of the tournament. That match will be just

:04:43.:04:48.

after 11pm UK time. We can see a union Jack just over your shoulder

:04:49.:04:53.

and that sounds like a noisy venue. What is the support for Team GB?

:04:54.:04:57.

Will they go wild when Lawrence Okolie and Joe Cordina come out? It

:04:58.:05:01.

has really picked up this evening. This morning it was a bit of a damp

:05:02.:05:06.

squib with not a lot of noise or a lot of fans in the arena but now it

:05:07.:05:10.

has really picked up and they had a couple of Brazilians here earlier

:05:11.:05:13.

and the home support was fantastic. So, there is Joe Cordina's opponent,

:05:14.:05:46.

Charlie Suarez, ranked 14th in the world. Here comes the Joe Cordina

:05:47.:05:56.

from Wales. It is his Olympic debut here in Rio 2016. He booked his

:05:57.:06:03.

place through a really difficult qualification tournament in Turkey.

:06:04.:06:06.

It was a European continental qualification tournament and he came

:06:07.:06:10.

through with a second-place finish to secure his passage through but he

:06:11.:06:14.

had some really hard fights en route to that final. He is just getting a

:06:15.:06:22.

pat on his back as he makes his way up the steps and into the Olympic

:06:23.:06:25.

boxing ring for the first time in what has been a glittering Korea to

:06:26.:06:34.

this point. Charly Suarez, 28 years of age, part

:06:35.:06:41.

of the two-man Filipino boxing team with no women on their squad. A

:06:42.:06:43.

sporting touch of gloves. Both men are back to their

:06:44.:06:58.

respective corners and keen to get their Olympic campaign is underway.

:06:59.:07:04.

Here we go, the first of scheduled 33-minute rounds in this 62 grams

:07:05.:07:07.

lightweight division between boxers from the Philippines and Great

:07:08.:07:12.

Britain. The man wearing blue is the Great Britain's Joe Cordina, 24

:07:13.:07:15.

years of age and his opponent is wearing red and he represents the

:07:16.:07:19.

Philippines, and that is Charlie Suarez. Both of these men come in

:07:20.:07:25.

with a good set of credentials. , from tournaments in their own

:07:26.:07:30.

regions. World Series boxing experience about both of them have

:07:31.:07:35.

acquired as well, so expect this one to be a thinking fighters contest.

:07:36.:07:45.

They knew all about each other because the Philippines were invited

:07:46.:07:48.

over for a multi-Nations training camp in the last few months so they

:07:49.:07:52.

will have sparred each other and they know all about each other. Joe

:07:53.:07:57.

is accompanying kid anyway and he would have been imagined -- like I

:07:58.:08:00.

imagine he would have been quite keen with the draw against this

:08:01.:08:04.

fella because I witnessed many spas with the GB against the Philippines

:08:05.:08:09.

and GB were controlling most of the spas against them so Joe has started

:08:10.:08:12.

very fast here in a confident mood, most definitely. He really is a

:08:13.:08:20.

talented individual, Joe Cordina. He can box on the front foot and going

:08:21.:08:26.

backwards. That is a cracking right hand and a cracking response. Both

:08:27.:08:37.

men are inside the world's top 20 with Charly Suarez number 14 and Joe

:08:38.:08:41.

Cordina number eight but neither man is seeded and that is why they are

:08:42.:08:44.

competing in this preliminary round of action. 28 boxers make up the

:08:45.:08:54.

lightweight tournament here in Rio. Joe Cordina is continuing to pick

:08:55.:09:00.

his punches and move effectively, when he holds his feet and

:09:01.:09:03.

standstill it is when he brings Suarez into the contest. He is a

:09:04.:09:14.

very difficult man to beat in deed. Joe Cordina needs to keep an in and

:09:15.:09:17.

out movement and work with the distance and then go back with the

:09:18.:09:21.

right hand. In and out and con fused the opponent. If you look at Suarez

:09:22.:09:25.

he is very flat-footed. He prefers the opponent to be standing in front

:09:26.:09:29.

of him in trading and may be working on the inside as he fancies the

:09:30.:09:32.

short to mid-range battle babe cannot adapt and move with a moving

:09:33.:09:35.

fighter like Cortina, so it is important that Cortina keeps the in

:09:36.:09:37.

and out movement going. Short of the mark on that occasion.

:09:38.:09:55.

The Cordina radar seems to be a lot more attuned now. He was caught by a

:09:56.:09:58.

left hand to the head and then Suarez went down the left and the

:09:59.:10:02.

body but a very good opening round of boxing with Cordina using his

:10:03.:10:06.

legs well and using his advantage in height and reach to good advantage

:10:07.:10:10.

as well. I think they will be very pleased in the GB corner. The

:10:11.:10:14.

movement was good for Cordina and occasionally he held his feet like

:10:15.:10:19.

he did there and got caught a shot but he was in and out for most of

:10:20.:10:22.

the round. We are just seeing the best action from Suarez but Cordina

:10:23.:10:28.

came back with his own good work there. If you have not seen Olympic

:10:29.:10:33.

boxing since London 2012, it is no longer computer scoring and it is a

:10:34.:10:38.

ten point system in effect and judge a as gone for Suarez and B and C

:10:39.:10:44.

favoured Cordina. The first round is split to live in favour of the

:10:45.:10:51.

British representative. Five judges are seated ringside and three of

:10:52.:10:54.

them are selected randomly without their knowledge prior to the opening

:10:55.:10:57.

bout and their scores are used to determine the contest. Into the

:10:58.:11:06.

second round we go. The man wearing red, Charly Suarez of the

:11:07.:11:09.

Philippines took the opening round for judge a, 10-9, whereas B and C

:11:10.:11:16.

favoured the eye-catching work of the man in blue. Make no mistake, it

:11:17.:11:20.

was a competitive opening round with a sneaky right hand from Suarez. If

:11:21.:11:25.

there is a criticism, and I am loath to criticise any boxer, but

:11:26.:11:28.

sometimes the concentration and workrate from Joe Cordina can dip

:11:29.:11:32.

and that is when he can bring opponents back into contest. It is

:11:33.:11:36.

vital that he keeps his concentration of workrate at optimal

:11:37.:11:38.

level throughout this opening bout in the lightweight tournament. Yes,

:11:39.:11:43.

he is experienced enough now to anticipate a tempo change from his

:11:44.:11:47.

opponent and that is what the Philippine caller would have said to

:11:48.:11:50.

their man. He has lost the first round and you have to up the

:11:51.:11:54.

workrate. For the first 30 seconds Suarez came out and he has done some

:11:55.:11:58.

better work and Cordina has to up the tempo and adjust the feet and

:11:59.:12:01.

bring his opponent onto the shots but not hold the feet. Hit him as he

:12:02.:12:06.

is coming and then move off to the side and go again and keep the

:12:07.:12:10.

movement. There you go, you you can see him adjust his feet as he lands

:12:11.:12:15.

two shots. That is better for Joe Cordina. He cannot afford to switch

:12:16.:12:23.

off. Codeine is only 24 years of age and he has participated in three

:12:24.:12:29.

World Championship tournaments. -- Cordina. He is 60 kilograms and

:12:30.:12:33.

always tends to be on the receiving end of very difficult draws, coming

:12:34.:12:37.

up against top boys from around the world, but he has acquired heaps of

:12:38.:12:42.

experience. Just attention will be required to the bootstrap of his

:12:43.:12:49.

right boot. To tell you a little bit about him, Joe Cordina is a right

:12:50.:12:53.

character. He is the clown of the group. He is a great impersonator

:12:54.:12:58.

and he can take off anyone. He is very talented. He makes everyone

:12:59.:13:02.

laughed, but he has to concentrate tonight. He just got caught by a

:13:03.:13:07.

right hand as the action resumed once the bootlace was adjusted.

:13:08.:13:12.

Suarez turned momentarily to the southpaw stance, coming from the

:13:13.:13:15.

Philippines it is perhaps unsurprising, as Cordina got through

:13:16.:13:20.

without good right hand and an Ali shuffle from Charly Suarez, coming

:13:21.:13:23.

from the Philippines it is unsurprising that his idol is Manny

:13:24.:13:28.

Pat the Alps, he also admires George Foreman and Evander Holyfield and

:13:29.:13:32.

they had glittering Olympic careers as well. Evander Holyfield was in

:13:33.:13:40.

the first Olympic Games where head guards were introduced. George

:13:41.:13:44.

Foreman romped his way to heavyweight gold before celebrating

:13:45.:13:48.

by pulling out a tiny American flag. Another single shot success from

:13:49.:13:58.

Suarez. Suarez is just waiting on the outside and when Cordina LAN two

:13:59.:14:02.

shots on the way out occasion he gets caught so he has to keep the

:14:03.:14:06.

guard up a little higher as he is moving away. He will probably move

:14:07.:14:11.

out of the side and if he goes up on a straight line he might get caught

:14:12.:14:17.

by this fella. Codeine scored with a wonderful right hand. The two of

:14:18.:14:20.

them are boxing with their hands down, tempting of fainting and

:14:21.:14:23.

teasing and trying to draw a lead of which they can encounter but a very

:14:24.:14:27.

good second round of boxing with very impressive adjustments made by

:14:28.:14:30.

Charly Suarez during the course of that round. That round was a lot

:14:31.:14:35.

closer with Suarez having a bit of success there. That is what they

:14:36.:14:39.

will be saying to him. He upped the tempo at the start when he had a bit

:14:40.:14:44.

of success with Cordina. He will have to do a bit better in this

:14:45.:14:47.

round. A good right hand there from Suarez. Waited for Cordina to be

:14:48.:14:52.

moving away from him and then he catches him again there with a good

:14:53.:14:58.

shot. Remember the first round was split with judge a favouring Suarez

:14:59.:15:02.

but B and C favoured Cordina. This time B and C favoured Suarez and C

:15:03.:15:14.

favoured Cordina. Perhaps that is a fair reflection of the contest we

:15:15.:15:16.

have witnessed until this point. Into the third and final round, and

:15:17.:15:28.

it's Joe Cordina, representing Great Britain, part of it, a 12 strong UK

:15:29.:15:34.

boxing team, larger than what they had in London, all ten male weight

:15:35.:15:39.

classes are filled with boxers, two out of three women's weight classes,

:15:40.:15:45.

the largest team since Los Angeles 1984, their lightweight

:15:46.:15:47.

representative Joe Cordina is in with the experienced and equally

:15:48.:15:51.

talented offering in Charly Suarez, switching his feet and bustling, a

:15:52.:15:57.

busy boxer. In this contest, intriguingly poised, on a knife edge

:15:58.:16:01.

coming into this third and final round. That was a super shot from

:16:02.:16:05.

Cordina, the right hook on the inside, with a cracking punch. Now

:16:06.:16:09.

he has two concentrate. You know that your man is coming for you, he

:16:10.:16:14.

has his bit between his teeth, concentration levels are high,

:16:15.:16:17.

hitting him as he comes, then move off to the side, that's the order of

:16:18.:16:21.

the day for Joe quantity that in this match now. -- Joe Cordina.

:16:22.:16:30.

Great Olympians over the years, with Joe Selby and Evans in London 2012

:16:31.:16:37.

who came away with a silver, that is who Cordina is trying to emulate, in

:16:38.:16:42.

his efforts to make the medal podium.

:16:43.:16:47.

Ralph Evans, and Fred Evans from London 2012. It is a tightly and

:16:48.:16:55.

closely run contest beyond the point of this third and final round, one

:16:56.:17:00.

would expect a grandstand finish from either boxer could be

:17:01.:17:03.

significant in determining the outcome of this bout.

:17:04.:17:07.

The better quality coming from Cordina here, he has to do more of

:17:08.:17:12.

it, satisfying those judges that he is not just try to make this

:17:13.:17:17.

contest, he has to do a bit more now, Cordina, in and out, step on

:17:18.:17:21.

the gas a bit. He is against an opponent who is not as talented but

:17:22.:17:24.

determined, which is always dangerous. The Philippines came here

:17:25.:17:31.

with only one boxing coach for their two-man team. They will be drafting

:17:32.:17:36.

in Kevin Smith, the former consultant to the Philippines, the

:17:37.:17:39.

man from Merseyside, the full-time coach of Australia but do not be

:17:40.:17:44.

surprised if you see him helping out with the Philippines boxing team if

:17:45.:17:48.

they progress. Joe Cordina is focused and really firing sharply

:17:49.:17:51.

with his right hand. A wonderful left hand from the man in blue. A

:17:52.:17:57.

simple shot and a simple jab, a lovely right hook on the inside,

:17:58.:18:03.

quality work from Cordina, pushing his opponent back occasionally with

:18:04.:18:06.

those kinds of shots. Keeping the judges happy. There is the ten

:18:07.:18:14.

second clap, a good hand to be solar plexus from Cordina, keeping his

:18:15.:18:19.

right hand cocked, southpaw momentarily. Fainting and fidgeting.

:18:20.:18:23.

Concluding what has been a high-quality 60 kilograms

:18:24.:18:27.

lightweight contest, both men think that they've done enough, Joe

:18:28.:18:32.

Cordina pumps his right fist to the crowd in attendance here at the

:18:33.:18:36.

Pavilion in Rio Centre. Remember, it was a very intriguingly poised

:18:37.:18:43.

coming into the third and final round.

:18:44.:18:47.

Big Fraser Clark is supporting the team, one of the best super

:18:48.:18:50.

heavyweights in the world. But it is Joe Joyce who got it here in Rio

:18:51.:18:56.

2016. The better quality work came from Cordina that, I think I will be

:18:57.:19:01.

surprised if this goes against him. I think Cordina has done enough to

:19:02.:19:05.

win, switched off in the second but he won in the third for me, so he

:19:06.:19:10.

should get it... Nervous moments for both of the boxes now. But we have

:19:11.:19:17.

just witnessed a wonderful bout, this is taking a while to make its

:19:18.:19:21.

way up to the public address announcer which means we could head

:19:22.:19:25.

for a split decision. The boxes will be replaying the contest in their

:19:26.:19:30.

minds now, when did I catch him? Have I done enough? -- the boxes

:19:31.:19:37.

will be replaying the contest in their minds. Ladies and gentlemen,

:19:38.:19:41.

the winner by split decision... Joe Cordina. Joe Cordina has his

:19:42.:20:03.

hand raised on a split decision victory. Over the 14th ranked boxer

:20:04.:20:06.

in the world, Charlier -- Charly Suarez. It is a keenly

:20:07.:20:18.

contested a fair, big Fraser Clark cheering on his team-mate, and Joe

:20:19.:20:21.

Cordina takes a bow, acknowledging all sides of the arena here at

:20:22.:20:26.

Pavilion six in Rio Centre. Let's have a look at how he did it...

:20:27.:20:33.

It's a clear 3-point margin advantage, Judge see clearly

:20:34.:20:39.

favoured the work of Cordina, but 2-1, Joe Cordina is through to the

:20:40.:20:44.

second round of the men's 60 kilograms lightweight tournament

:20:45.:20:47.

where he will face the tournament number five seed -- Judge C. He will

:20:48.:21:01.

face Hurshid Tojibaev, a wonderful performance, digging it out when

:21:02.:21:05.

necessary, going through to the second round of the men's 60

:21:06.:21:13.

kilograms lightweight tournament. Overall, I think it was a good

:21:14.:21:17.

performance from Claudine, he fell apart in the second round, I think

:21:18.:21:21.

mentally, just letting it slip a little -- Joe Cordina. I think the

:21:22.:21:26.

better quality work definitely in that last round got him over the

:21:27.:21:31.

line, he has got the first under his belt, get those nerves out of the

:21:32.:21:39.

way. He goes to retrieve the second round of the men's 60 kilograms

:21:40.:21:43.

lightweight tournament, he has to win five contests if he hopes to

:21:44.:21:47.

claim the Olympic Golf Course but he has done the first part of his

:21:48.:21:51.

mission by winning his opening contest, and he goes through to the

:21:52.:21:57.

second round where he will face Hurshid Tojibaev of Uzbekistan, the

:21:58.:22:05.

tournament's number five seed. DAN: We will be back to the box and

:22:06.:22:10.

later, thank you to Richie and Ron, we will hear Joe Cordina's reaction

:22:11.:22:14.

to making it through to the second round, good work seeing of Charly

:22:15.:22:22.

Suarez. You may be settling into evening Olympics, there's a huge

:22:23.:22:27.

offering of Olympic coverage on the BBC over the next 16 days, and it's

:22:28.:22:31.

only day one! You might see quite a where you think, you know, I want to

:22:32.:22:35.

have a go at that! That is what the Olympics are all

:22:36.:22:39.

about. Nine of the ten athletes in a poll said that they had been

:22:40.:22:43.

inspired to get involved in an Olympic discipline by watching the

:22:44.:22:47.

Olympics themselves. If you are at home tonight, or over the course of

:22:48.:22:52.

the next two weeks you think, I want to go... The BBC Get Inspired can

:22:53.:22:55.

hopefully cater for you, and this could be the two weeks where you

:22:56.:23:02.

that inspiration... Get Inspired is BBC Sport's campaign to get active.

:23:03.:23:18.

It is on the website and you can find inspirational stories

:23:19.:23:23.

from people like you, as well as hints, tips and 70

:23:24.:23:26.

practical guides to help you give something a go.

:23:27.:23:28.

There is an activity finder to help you find something to try near you.

:23:29.:23:31.

You can ask questions through the social media accounts

:23:32.:23:34.

and maybe you can inspire someone else to give something a try.

:23:35.:23:36.

Get up, get inspired, and get active.

:23:37.:23:42.

Joe Cordina just put in an inspirational performance, he is

:23:43.:23:48.

with Jess. How did you find that experience? It was amazing. With all

:23:49.:23:53.

of these people, it's only going to get bigger, the crowd. I cannot wait

:23:54.:23:57.

to find again -- fight again! What did you think of your performance? I

:23:58.:24:02.

thought I executed well, you come inswinging. For me, I had to step

:24:03.:24:08.

back and hit him as he came in, and put him under pressure. I thought I

:24:09.:24:13.

executed perfectly. You seemed calm but it was a split decision? The

:24:14.:24:19.

judges had seen it that way. I thought either Crewe all three

:24:20.:24:23.

rounds, it is what it is, they are there to judge and I am there to

:24:24.:24:28.

box. I got the win, that is the main thing. You said before the

:24:29.:24:31.

tournament the gold medal was your aim, after that, are you still

:24:32.:24:35.

confident? Yes, my first fight is always the shaky one in every

:24:36.:24:39.

tournament, I look to improve in every fight, the gold is there for

:24:40.:24:43.

the taking. You've seen your next opponent, the fifth seed from

:24:44.:24:48.

Uzbekistan, how will you go about preparing for him? The same as

:24:49.:24:53.

anyone else, I just box to my advantages, I saw a video of him

:24:54.:24:59.

boxing, that was on Monday or Tuesday, I will look at the video

:25:00.:25:04.

and see what I can do to beat him. And move on. It is tough, but I'm

:25:05.:25:08.

more than capable of beating him, I think. A brilliant fight, good luck

:25:09.:25:13.

for the next round. DAN: Plenty more boxing coming up

:25:14.:25:19.

for you on BBC Four, even tonight, we have Lawrence Okolie going for

:25:20.:25:23.

Team GB in the heavyweights. Ronnie and Ron will be very busy,

:25:52.:25:55.

:26:08.:26:12.

2am every night on BBC Four. I think it is high time that we tell you

:26:13.:26:16.

what you can watch and where you can watch it.

:26:17.:26:20.

:27:24.:27:26.

television or access your phone, listen to BBC Radio five Live, they

:27:27.:27:31.

have everything for you as well. We are here every day on BBC four,

:27:32.:27:35.

this is our base on Copacabana beach, will it looks glorious, we

:27:36.:27:41.

had boxing, football, they are now fishing. Can you see that? I told

:27:42.:27:46.

you earlier how busy it is at Copacabana beach, I don't think

:27:47.:27:50.

fishing is yet an Olympic event, it probably will be an future!

:27:51.:27:53.

They are broadening things every time. It is always busy, behind us

:27:54.:27:59.

there is general traffic up the avenue Atlantique.

:28:00.:28:02.

It was packed earlier, this is where the road race started and then aged.

:28:03.:28:07.

Great hopes for Team GB of Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas perhaps come

:28:08.:28:10.

on home with a medal but unfortunately none of them managed

:28:11.:28:14.

to be in the top three, Geraint Thomas crashed in the final descent

:28:15.:28:17.

and Chris Froome finished outside of the top ten.

:28:18.:28:21.

Belgian break... Icon from under his surname, he managed to win the gold

:28:22.:28:27.

medal -- I cannot remember his surname.

:28:28.:28:31.

It is not in my book, but Belgian one the road race.

:28:32.:28:34.

In four days, Chris Froome has the chance to win the time trial, that

:28:35.:28:39.

is what Bradley Wiggins managed to four years ago.

:28:40.:28:42.

He went to the Olympics having won the Tour de France, that is winning

:28:43.:28:48.

gold in the time trial, and it was Greg frame... Chris Froome... Greg!

:28:49.:28:55.

Chris Froome won the bronze medal in that time trial four years ago, can

:28:56.:29:00.

he win the gold this time around? Four days away.

:29:01.:29:03.

Let's bring you some football live on BBC Four. Later we have the USA

:29:04.:29:08.

taking on France, they are the third ranked side in the world at the

:29:09.:29:13.

moment, but there's a back story to hope Solo, the American goalkeeper

:29:14.:29:18.

Beale doing up to her 200th cab, and in the build-up to the Olympic

:29:19.:29:22.

tournament, she got in a spot of bother for putting these pictures on

:29:23.:29:27.

Instagram -- Hope Solo. It was all about the Zika virus, she had her

:29:28.:29:35.

anti-mosquitoes paraphernalia. This is what happened when they played

:29:36.:29:38.

New Zealand in the opening game on Wednesday... A loud cry of "Zika"

:29:39.:29:52.

when she kicked the ball. Her next cap is against France, ranked third

:29:53.:29:57.

in the world, they won beating Colombia 4-0, that is in group G,

:29:58.:30:03.

live commentary picking up in a moment, that is taking place in Belo

:30:04.:30:07.

Horizonte, we had a gold a couple of moments ago, let's bring in our

:30:08.:30:09.

commentator. Here is Dwayne. And opportunity, Megan Brian had the

:30:10.:30:25.

chance. Eventually bundled in. United States have opened the

:30:26.:30:30.

scoring. It has come late but come through their inspirational cap and,

:30:31.:30:37.

Charlie Lloyd. It is a team effort, the pressure has been building and

:30:38.:30:43.

it has been coming. The United States fans celebrate, they lead the

:30:44.:30:51.

third best side in the world by 1-0. It has been a long time coming.

:30:52.:30:59.

Fired in a thunderous effort. There are two clean-up was the cap to,

:31:00.:31:12.

Carly Lloyd. -- captain. USA lead France by 1-0, 15 minutes to go. We

:31:13.:31:20.

will join live commentary. United States taking on France.

:31:21.:31:43.

A foul. Needs to be careful here. Slightly frustrated.

:31:44.:31:52.

France double the number of fouls than the United States have

:31:53.:32:18.

committed. Deep ball in. Head on the end of it. She cannot correct this

:32:19.:32:20.

effort. Less than 15 minutes for France to

:32:21.:32:38.

find an equaliser. United States looking for another 3-pointer and

:32:39.:32:42.

the 13 successive -- 13 successive victory. London 2012, very

:32:43.:32:53.

successful year for the women's team from the United States in terms of

:32:54.:32:58.

their impressive runs at tournaments. It was the first time

:32:59.:33:02.

that they had won every single one of their matches. They lost the odd

:33:03.:33:14.

group game on their way previously. They had drawn a couple as well.

:33:15.:33:24.

There is the new player on. Delie. Hope Solo gets it away and it is

:33:25.:33:30.

cleared by O'Hara. That was down low and to her right. Hope Solo very

:33:31.:33:36.

tall and so were dangerous. It skipped off the surface and it was

:33:37.:33:40.

denied. 64th international goal. Here is the goal again, Lloyd,

:33:41.:34:03.

having bumped it home after Heath's effort came off the woodwork.

:34:04.:34:09.

Ricocheted kindly for Carly Lloyd and the disbelief from the French

:34:10.:34:19.

player. A short while after that, the header from Delie been saved by

:34:20.:34:25.

Hope Solo. He has gone into an attacking position since the

:34:26.:34:27.

substitution. -- Heath. Heath. Ask Alex Morgan to chase but

:34:28.:35:00.

that was a little too strong once again. Alex Morgan. Another player

:35:01.:35:13.

who is scoring a goal more than every two Games for the United

:35:14.:35:25.

States. -- matches. 12 goals in 14 matches so far. Clearly one of the

:35:26.:35:31.

strikes against New Zealand in their opening game. Would you believe it?

:35:32.:35:57.

France agonisingly close. That must have been a hard in your throat

:35:58.:36:02.

moment, for the United States players, they look shell-shocked.

:36:03.:36:10.

Hope Solo answers it away. The height advantage is fairly

:36:11.:36:18.

significant -- punches it away. A little tumble, a second yellow card

:36:19.:36:26.

in the match. Ten minutes to play, France are down by one and Krieger,

:36:27.:36:32.

a short while ago, having hit the side netting,

:36:33.:36:44.

... Taking the set piece. The United States happy to count down the

:36:45.:36:53.

clock. Lovely. Until the shot. Alex Morgan

:36:54.:37:16.

thought she would try her luck from a little way out. Slightly

:37:17.:37:21.

overzealous. She has got the ability to create those opportunities during

:37:22.:37:27.

a match and she has dazzled before a long-range strike. -- with a

:37:28.:37:41.

long-range strike. She is a little frustrated, waiting for a double

:37:42.:37:50.

substitution. Carly Lloyd looking around. Abily has been taken off for

:37:51.:38:01.

France. Carly Lloyd, the captain has been

:38:02.:38:35.

taken of. Looking a little questioningly at her coat was Carly

:38:36.:38:42.

Lloyd but eventually left the field of play. France are on the attack.

:38:43.:38:48.

Ball in, scrambling and Hope Solo takes command. Smothers the ball,

:38:49.:38:51.

clutches onto it for dear life. There would have been questions

:38:52.:39:09.

asked if France had scored from that set piece.

:39:10.:39:38.

Ball in, she gets a head on this one but it is split to wave. -- it is

:39:39.:40:04.

flicked it away. Confirmation of the substitution for

:40:05.:40:31.

flam -- France. Little run here, the United States

:40:32.:40:48.

again searching for a second goal, a cushioning goal, any opportunity to

:40:49.:40:51.

run down the clock. Cut back. Fuste away. Five minutes

:40:52.:41:17.

to play and it is still not United States having it all their own way.

:41:18.:41:42.

Five minutes to play. Over. That is that. She was unable to keep up ball

:41:43.:42:07.

in play. -- Delie was unable to keep that all in play. She wants to see

:42:08.:42:13.

the end of this game. A good defender. Did not make an appearance

:42:14.:42:24.

inside the opening game. She will be happy to have another international

:42:25.:42:33.

appearance behind. Makes way. -- Delie makes way.

:42:34.:42:47.

Dangerous player, someone who has the ability to change the match.

:42:48.:42:56.

Ball in, too many players wanting it and in the end it is a collision

:42:57.:43:06.

tween the two substitutes. -- between.

:43:07.:43:32.

Great chance for France again. Plenty of possibility and ultimately

:43:33.:44:01.

no reward, all Harrer licks that all to safety. -- Kelli O'Hara. The

:44:02.:44:11.

United States have not been convincing in this match overall

:44:12.:44:16.

that they could finish it off here. She claims that Sinn and sees this

:44:17.:44:23.

ball clear. Verging on desperation now rather than just urgency from

:44:24.:44:27.

France in the closing stages of this game.

:44:28.:44:39.

A flick over the top. She is a PSG striker who will win the corner for

:44:40.:44:57.

France. There is the coach. Calling for instructions. Watching rather

:44:58.:45:04.

anxiously at the closing stages of this tie.

:45:05.:45:18.

Hits the post. Another corner has been called. It might have been a

:45:19.:45:30.

goal kick, but in the penultimate minute of this tie, France have a

:45:31.:45:37.

set piece opportunity. Solo, fuming at her defenders. France for the set

:45:38.:45:43.

piece again. Some jersey tugging going on, and France don't get away

:45:44.:45:52.

with it. Third and final substitution here. Another Chicago

:45:53.:45:59.

red stars player is going to make her way on here. Christen Press

:46:00.:46:06.

comes on. Meghan Klingenberg makes her way off.

:46:07.:46:20.

Well, she had nine minutes off the bench in her first game, Christen

:46:21.:46:28.

Press. She only has added time virtually to play in this match. And

:46:29.:46:31.

there is not going to be a significant amount of that either.

:46:32.:46:38.

She is a part of the United States Olympic squad, she has an

:46:39.:46:42.

opportunity to win an Olympic medal in this tournament, looking for

:46:43.:46:46.

successive victory is here. The goalkeeper is off line, Alex Morgan

:46:47.:46:50.

has beat in two French players, looks to send it back to anybody.

:46:51.:46:56.

Anybody who is rushing forward to the French goal to cap it into the

:46:57.:47:01.

open net. The United States lead France by Carli Lloyd's goal. And

:47:02.:47:07.

France are looking for a favourite come from behind draw, desperate for

:47:08.:47:09.

an equaliser here. Morgan back again. Wins the free

:47:10.:47:27.

kick. A little theatrical in her reaction. Just take you to wildly at

:47:28.:47:34.

the referee, trying to communicate has much. The Uruguayan referee,

:47:35.:47:42.

Claudio Paredes, she has been convincing and commanding in her

:47:43.:47:47.

calls. -- Claudia Peres. What has she got? Looking up at the

:47:48.:47:48.

scoreboard. Calling for it, once possession,

:47:49.:48:40.

Henry got a touch. Continues on her way. The free kick goes the way of

:48:41.:48:46.

the United States. Again, Henry, battling away, a tenacious

:48:47.:48:46.

character. Closing stages. O'Hara says anywhere

:48:47.:49:17.

will do. 30 odd seconds of added time remaining. The United States

:49:18.:49:23.

holding on for what will be a record 13th successive victory in Olympic

:49:24.:49:31.

football tournament history in the women's draw.

:49:32.:49:43.

That is the end of it. United States extend their record in women's

:49:44.:49:52.

Olympic football tournament is the 13th successive victory is now,

:49:53.:49:56.

going back to Beijing 2008. Carli Lloyd's goal the difference between

:49:57.:50:01.

the sides. It took over an hour to come. Tobin Heath set it up, would

:50:02.:50:05.

work out, and ultimately Carli Lloyd with a critical goal for her nation

:50:06.:50:11.

takes her up to 90 international goals and is just ten away from

:50:12.:50:15.

becoming only the sixth woman in United States football history to

:50:16.:50:20.

reach the magical century of goals. For the United States as a team,

:50:21.:50:25.

though, another victory for Hope Solo on an individual note, heard

:50:26.:50:31.

200 international appearance ends with her keeping her 102nd clean

:50:32.:50:37.

sheet and helping the United States to their 153rd victory in a match in

:50:38.:50:43.

which she has played. She will undoubtedly go down as one of the

:50:44.:50:47.

world's greatest players, the first ever goalkeeper, male or female, to

:50:48.:50:53.

reach 200 international appearances. And she has done it in Belo

:50:54.:50:57.

Horizonte at the Olympic Games, Hope Solo, and she will celebrate long

:50:58.:51:00.

and hard with her team-mates. There is much to be done yet in the

:51:01.:51:05.

women's football tournament, but they now have a pronominal platform

:51:06.:51:09.

from which to launch the campaign for golf. Two victories from two

:51:10.:51:13.

matches. For France, it will be back to the drawing board, but they have

:51:14.:51:17.

won group stage match to come, that is against New Zealand. As a match

:51:18.:51:21.

that will replace the current of the United States taking on Columbia in

:51:22.:51:25.

their final group match. Both however will be confident of

:51:26.:51:28.

advancing to the knockout stages of this competition. France had their

:51:29.:51:33.

moment of domination in this game. United States, they were hardly

:51:34.:51:38.

convincing. But today perhaps they will also that the result against

:51:39.:51:45.

the third best team in the world was more important than the performance.

:51:46.:52:03.

# Witness the fitness... # On hope, one quest. # Witness the fitness...

sevens. It has been the women's sport today, the favourite of

:55:08.:55:10.

Australia, they have been professional since it was announced

:55:11.:55:14.

the sport would be included in the game. The Aussies or import a. The

:55:15.:55:18.

top three teams go to the quarterfinals plus the two best

:55:19.:55:25.

third-place side -- pool A. Fiji has a great love of this game. Let's

:55:26.:55:29.

joint Eddie Butler and Sir Clive Woodward for commentary on this one.

:55:30.:55:36.

COMMENTATOR: It is the last Game of the Day, the only clash of the day

:55:37.:55:41.

between two Maxine... Teams that are unbeaten after one round. Fiji beat

:55:42.:55:44.

the United States to kick against Australia. Australia were in periods

:55:45.:55:51.

in their victory over Colombia earlier. Australia very much

:55:52.:56:05.

favourites. Australia get the penalty. Charlotte Caslick. She is

:56:06.:56:14.

with the pass. Chloe Dalton, and look for the forward pass, it will

:56:15.:56:19.

not be given. It is going for Emilee Cherry. There I must say, the past

:56:20.:56:34.

did look slightly forward going. Wonderful skills, a great try by the

:56:35.:56:39.

Australian women. Emilee Cherry, looking very, very special. Great

:56:40.:56:42.

pass by Catholic mayor. That is good. -- great pass by Catholic. The

:56:43.:56:51.

ball was pointing forward -- I Charlotte Caslick. It was not given,

:56:52.:56:59.

these things happen. A great start by Australia. Out of all the teams,

:57:00.:57:04.

the Australian team keeps the width of the whole field. There is always

:57:05.:57:08.

a player on either side in that first few seconds in this game. That

:57:09.:57:13.

is so hard to defend because they have got the passing skills to get

:57:14.:57:17.

the players left or right. They really play with the width, this

:57:18.:57:21.

Australian team, because they have got great passes. Chloe Dalton, oh,

:57:22.:57:25.

different, kicking the ball together. Straight down towards the

:57:26.:57:35.

Fijian goal-line. Now then, if they can get the ball away, oh, that is

:57:36.:57:42.

brilliant. To get out of their 22, there is a long way to go yet, but

:57:43.:57:48.

so far, so very good. And then they spoil it. Penalty in front the

:57:49.:57:57.

knock-on. Never mind, just a sign of the danger that comes with all

:57:58.:58:05.

Fijian sides. Australia prepare to slow it all down. You can go

:58:06.:58:12.

backwards and then speed, check the pace through Charlotte Caslick. Good

:58:13.:58:17.

pressure by Fiji, and from an offside position. Sara Cox of

:58:18.:58:21.

Britain is the referee. Charlie Williams charging dock. -- charging

:58:22.:58:30.

up. Another advantage to Australia. Cherry.

:58:31.:58:41.

On the outside for the try. Seriously great finish. They have

:58:42.:58:53.

played this game quicker. They have always got the width for the try.

:58:54.:58:58.

That was a wonderful finish by Emma Tonegato. The passing skill that we

:58:59.:59:06.

have seen. There are, very special. Very special. They play with great

:59:07.:59:11.

with, greater than any other team in the tournament -- great width.

:59:12.:59:18.

This is Chloe Dalton, who has been the kicker of the day. Not that

:59:19.:59:34.

time. Again, it came from a Fiji and error, a Fijian knock-on. You can't

:59:35.:59:38.

beat these top teams if you are going to give silly possessions

:59:39.:59:41.

away. The Fijians have got to keep hold of the ball and make the

:59:42.:59:47.

Australian defence. -- make the Australians defend.

:59:48.:59:56.

Well taken by Litia Naiqato. A bit of trouble, but they get it away.

:59:57.:00:12.

There is a chance here of acceleration. But another careless

:00:13.:00:19.

mistake, and they take over. Charlotte Parry.

:00:20.:00:26.

Rebecca stops Australia in their tracks. Absolute poetry. Charlotte,

:00:27.:00:39.

Balint. Their balance, therefore work,, what a

:00:40.:01:01.

wonderful player -- there are fit work. -- there are footwork. They

:01:02.:01:14.

have got to hold the ball to have any chance of beating that.

:01:15.:01:29.

Takes the restart. Chloe Dalton. She will pick her spot and she will not

:01:30.:01:47.

be far off. I gain they go long. -- again. They have decided that they

:01:48.:01:58.

are going to pen CG straight that in their 22. -- CG. -- Fiji. Fiji

:01:59.:02:17.

cannot handle the pressure from the Australian defence. Better

:02:18.:02:24.

scrummage, that of a scramble for Australia. When they have

:02:25.:02:29.

possession, that is what really counts. It goes to Green. Australia

:02:30.:02:43.

should have the throw. I have a gone first from Australia, I will go

:02:44.:02:53.

scrum, Fiji. Not gone first. -- not on.

:02:54.:02:59.

Very powerful, Australia. It has been the tale of the first half that

:03:00.:03:11.

Fiji will have to start from very deep, five metres from their own

:03:12.:03:19.

line. Quick free kick, grow. Awkwardly taken. -- kick. A bit too

:03:20.:03:35.

quick. Let us go, please. Fiji, Fiji! Well, let us see what comes of

:03:36.:03:48.

this, nothing so far, Green spins and delivers a superb pass. Recovers

:03:49.:03:57.

to play scrum-half, Shannon Parry says enough is enough, let us take a

:03:58.:04:03.

break, 19-0, Australia lead at half-time. That was a try. Not quite

:04:04.:04:20.

sure what that was all about. I really do not understand why Shannon

:04:21.:04:25.

Parry proved the ball into the beautiful Brazilian sky. -- kick.

:04:26.:04:40.

Maybe they see that they are in full control of this game going into

:04:41.:04:44.

tomorrow. They have the easiest task of all

:04:45.:04:59.

the teams, really. All the teams have a major clash on their hands.

:05:00.:05:09.

They look so confident. All are happy to stand in the wide channels.

:05:10.:05:22.

You have to watch these tries. The one player who does not take to the

:05:23.:05:26.

wide channel is Charlotte Caslick who takes everything down the middle

:05:27.:05:37.

of the park. Her sweeping, allows her to cut the gap. Give her one on

:05:38.:05:51.

one and she will score. Let us hope that Fiji can find on in here. They

:05:52.:05:58.

are going OK, 19-0 is not beyond them.

:05:59.:06:06.

In the first game, Louise for Fiji was so good as. She went off injured

:06:07.:06:23.

but she is playing now, number 11. She was such an important character

:06:24.:06:28.

for Fiji and I wonder if she is fully fit. Here is the restart.

:06:29.:06:33.

Given away again, possession for Australia and they build through

:06:34.:06:42.

Dalton and Charlotte Caslick. Green. Hops out of one, dances out of

:06:43.:06:47.

another. Those two ground. Penalty advantageous being played, not gone

:06:48.:06:50.

advantage. -- advantage -- knock-on. Green took exception to that. A very

:06:51.:07:14.

physical challenge on her. Not gone is the end result, Australian ball.

:07:15.:07:18.

-- not on. -- knock-on. Australia through Emily Chery.

:07:19.:07:55.

Shannon Parry. Australia less in periods when it is tight and

:07:56.:08:02.

physical. Even Charlotte Caslick throws it at a little untidy and

:08:03.:08:08.

Australia are still in possession. Charlene Williams, the captain.

:08:09.:08:19.

Dalton. That was not a great pass from the Australians. You can see

:08:20.:08:25.

the pressure, their Fiji women where they are, they can make stakes as

:08:26.:08:38.

well. -- they can make this state. -- mistake.

:08:39.:08:49.

Australia are back in possession. Green those on the outside. -- green

:08:50.:09:22.

is on the outside. They might check this.

:09:23.:09:33.

She has been very impressive, she has had a lot of the ball, that took

:09:34.:09:43.

some finishing. She was born in Fiji and only started playing the game

:09:44.:09:46.

three years ago, if you have skill and talent, Rugby sevens will suit

:09:47.:10:00.

you. She is now the star of the best team in the world. No conversion.

:10:01.:10:12.

The result is not in doubt now, Australia will go into the match

:10:13.:10:19.

against the USA as the outstanding team in their group.

:10:20.:10:40.

She got hands to that. Australia ball, though. Back out into the

:10:41.:10:59.

three quarters. Charlotte Caslick picks the throw. Scrum-half.

:11:00.:11:12.

Overthrown. Away come Fiji. Wide. On the switch. Rebecca. Penalty to

:11:13.:11:20.

Australia and Fiji have to get back quickly. They take the ball so

:11:21.:11:29.

quickly. Everything goes so quickly. Williams delivers. Charlotte

:11:30.:11:39.

Caslick. Stand through. And the second one, did she score? Is it?

:11:40.:11:56.

Any rug the team should watch that again -- any rugby team. Try

:11:57.:12:09.

awarded. Watching Charlotte Caslick kick the ball, it was a brilliant

:12:10.:12:18.

kick. Wonderful cake. That took a lot of skill. The try comes from

:12:19.:12:36.

this. -- kick. That is great skills from Emma Tonegato. The try is

:12:37.:12:48.

given. We are going to leave the rugby sevens because we promised you

:12:49.:12:50.

live boxing and and we are moving to the

:12:51.:13:01.

boxing. That is the man that Lawrence Okolie

:13:02.:13:24.

will have to overcome. The Polish contender. Lawrence Okolie has 25

:13:25.:13:30.

fights under his belt coming into real 2016. He is about to hear his

:13:31.:13:36.

name announced by the public address announcer. He gets himself familiar

:13:37.:13:41.

under the lights of the Olympic boxing ring. Very confident

:13:42.:13:48.

character indeed, Lawrence Okolie, very experienced. Does not give

:13:49.:13:58.

anyone respect. He is tall, rangy and he is difficult to beat.

:13:59.:14:15.

The man wearing red has made a great start. Lawrence Okolie, 23 years old

:14:16.:14:24.

and his opponent wearing blue is from Poland. Both of these men

:14:25.:14:28.

competing in their first Olympic Games. He scored with a good right

:14:29.:14:33.

uppercut. He has made a blistering start here,

:14:34.:14:55.

scoring with the right-hand and Igor Jakubowski is under pressure early.

:14:56.:14:58.

Tremendous start from Lawrence Okolie. He is using his jab and

:14:59.:15:05.

measuring the distance before he is throwing that right-hand, sensible

:15:06.:15:11.

start, fast out of the blocks, Lawrence Okolie. Igor Jakubowski has

:15:12.:15:16.

a real problem, when he closes that gap down, right uppercut comes his

:15:17.:15:22.

way so Lawrence Okolie can box long but he can shorten it with that

:15:23.:15:25.

right uppercut. The problem for the Polish boxer.

:15:26.:15:33.

Okolie is a confident character, which has been alluded to, as he

:15:34.:15:39.

gets in his grave, a very difficult man to beat indeed. He knows just

:15:40.:15:44.

about every shot in the book. But when that left jab gets working, it

:15:45.:15:49.

is long and straight and strong. It can serve as an effective deterrent

:15:50.:15:53.

to prevent boxers trying to get inside him. Started brightly here,

:15:54.:15:58.

Jakubowski trying to land single shots of his own. Just got to steady

:15:59.:16:04.

up a little bit, Lawrence Okolie. He wants to keep the point is accurate.

:16:05.:16:09.

If he misses the target, that will give just the Polisky a chance to

:16:10.:16:13.

come back with an overhand right. -- Jakubowski. He has got to watch out,

:16:14.:16:18.

he has got to be accurate with the jab and box at range. If he misses

:16:19.:16:23.

the target with the lead hand, that will give Jakubowski a chance to

:16:24.:16:29.

land the right-hand counter. Okolie, a student at East London University,

:16:30.:16:33.

where he is studying psychosocial or do. -- psychosocial orgies. He has

:16:34.:16:42.

deferred his studies until next year -- he is studying psychology and

:16:43.:16:52.

social G. Just backed off a little bit. The effect of the right hand.

:16:53.:16:56.

Momentarily he felt that. You can just tell when a boxer has hurt a

:16:57.:17:02.

little bit. I think dockable ski was there. Back with the left- right

:17:03.:17:08.

combination, just short of the mark on that occasion. A very good

:17:09.:17:14.

opening round of boxing on the Olympic debut of Lawrence Okolie.

:17:15.:17:20.

Jakubowski is in the blue corner. But over in the red corner, the GB

:17:21.:17:25.

coaches will be quite happy with the work of their man. That was a very

:17:26.:17:32.

dominant round of boxing and Lawrence Okolie. Tremendous work at

:17:33.:17:37.

range. Oxime behind that jab, a sensible start. Fast tempo -- boxing

:17:38.:17:42.

behind that jab. Keeping his opponent at bay. The scores are very

:17:43.:17:50.

positive for Okolie. Now we should see him. That is a great opening,

:17:51.:17:58.

for much and unexperienced international boxer, Lawrence Okolie

:17:59.:18:04.

--. An inexperienced boxer. Plenty of support and attendance for

:18:05.:18:07.

Lawrence Okolie. He prepares to once the bell for the second round. -- to

:18:08.:18:16.

once the bell. A left hook followed a right-hand, forcing Jakubowski to

:18:17.:18:19.

touch down. The referee says that was a slip, he may well have lost

:18:20.:18:23.

his footing but he took a couple of shots from the man in red. Okolie on

:18:24.:18:29.

the rampage once more. Just got to steady himself here, Lawrence

:18:30.:18:35.

Okolie, landing big as -- bigot shots. It was a definite punch that

:18:36.:18:39.

caused the knockdown, but Okolie has the steady himself. -- Aegerter

:18:40.:18:45.

shots. That will give Jakubowski a chance to work on the inside. It is

:18:46.:18:50.

good work for Okolie. He has got to keep it going and maintain the gap

:18:51.:18:55.

between himself and his opponent. Four years ago, Lawrence Okolie was

:18:56.:18:58.

working at a well-known fast food burger chain. He saw Anthony Joshua

:18:59.:19:07.

win Olympic gold. And then he took himself down to the boxing gym in an

:19:08.:19:10.

effort to shift some weight, he was diagnosed as clinically obese and

:19:11.:19:15.

his weight had ballooned up to 120 kilograms. And that is when he

:19:16.:19:20.

discovered his fantastic powered in the boxing ring. And after just 23

:19:21.:19:28.

bouts in a first, 25 bouts before Rio because he competed in the World

:19:29.:19:33.

Series boxing as well -- in a vest. He finds himself in the opening

:19:34.:19:37.

round of the Olympic boxing tournament, boxing very effectively

:19:38.:19:41.

indeed against the experience Jakubowski. He is boxing very well,

:19:42.:19:45.

but making the odd array here and there, allowing Jakubowski to get a

:19:46.:19:50.

bit closer. Jakubowski is taking all the shots on the bows, he knows he

:19:51.:19:54.

cannot break the gap and the distance down, she is edging up --

:19:55.:19:58.

on the elbows. He is looking for a single shot, maybe over the top. If

:19:59.:20:03.

Lawrence Okolie follows shot or misses the target, that is what

:20:04.:20:08.

here's hoping, to land one. He is still dangerous, the poll. He is

:20:09.:20:15.

powerful, he is looking for a shot that may stop or knock Okolie out,

:20:16.:20:19.

that is what here's hoping for. Reigning European Championship

:20:20.:20:26.

silver medallist, Jakubowski. He won the EU European title. A good left

:20:27.:20:30.

hand, the man in blue. He comes with a glittering set of credentials,

:20:31.:20:34.

nine Time national championship gold medallist between 2008 and 2014.

:20:35.:20:40.

Participating twice in a World Championships as well. Heaps of

:20:41.:20:44.

experience, compared to the still not as Lawrence Okolie. Okolie's

:20:45.:20:51.

talent is such and his desire of confidence -- the still not as

:20:52.:20:55.

Okolie. He has been able to make it through to the limbic tournament

:20:56.:21:04.

after just 25 contests -- novice. Feeling the pace slightly, Okolie,

:21:05.:21:13.

starting quick remember. They fit indeed. Another good round for

:21:14.:21:20.

Okolie, allowing duck ball skewed comeback in slightly. -- allowing

:21:21.:21:23.

the costly. He has forced Jakubowski to touch

:21:24.:21:36.

down, but he was not ruled. That was a tremendous shot that from Okolie.

:21:37.:21:41.

The start of the round. Look at the distance and leveraged that he gets

:21:42.:21:46.

there. That is his strength, when he is boxing at distance behind that

:21:47.:21:48.

left and straight right hand. Gary Hale in that corner. Let's look

:21:49.:22:00.

at the scores. Kohli has got it, he is very comfortable, he has the

:22:01.:22:07.

theatre -- Okolie. -- he has to see it out now.

:22:08.:22:12.

Into the third and final round we go. The man wearing red is Lawrence

:22:13.:22:21.

Okolie of Great Britain, the 23-year-old from East London finds

:22:22.:22:23.

himself in a pretty commanding position having taken the opening

:22:24.:22:30.

two rounds across the board from all three judges. Throughout this

:22:31.:22:34.

opening day of competition, he hopes to be crowned Olympic champion, you

:22:35.:22:38.

are going to have to go five times during the course of the tournament.

:22:39.:22:43.

So Okolie would do well to pace himself here. Ensure that he doesn't

:22:44.:22:49.

walk into anything silly or pick up an injury that could curtail his

:22:50.:22:53.

progress, because he is on the cusp of progressing through to the second

:22:54.:22:58.

round here. And he has built up a 20.20 lead from all three scoring

:22:59.:23:02.

judges. We couldn't hear what was said in the corner from Lawrence

:23:03.:23:06.

Okolie, but I think they are saying, get back to your boxing, keep the

:23:07.:23:11.

distance and get back behind jab, see the contest. When you are up

:23:12.:23:14.

against a Polish boxer, they are dangerous, they are well school,

:23:15.:23:18.

they produced great champions over the years, Poland. This fella will

:23:19.:23:22.

be dangerous right to the very last second, that is where Okolie has got

:23:23.:23:28.

to keep him concentration levels very high and boxed sensibly and

:23:29.:23:33.

keep the distance and the gap. He came through a really tough route of

:23:34.:23:37.

qualification, Jakubowski. He won the global Olympic of occasion event

:23:38.:23:43.

in Baku, Azerbaijan. He beat Rio Castillo of Ecuador, a hard-fought

:23:44.:23:47.

affair. He will continue to compete right up until the last, when he

:23:48.:23:52.

perhaps knows, the way that boxers do know, that he is trailing in this

:23:53.:23:57.

contest. He is looking to land something big and explosive to put

:23:58.:24:00.

Okolie on the compass and out of the contest. Good right-hand from Okolie

:24:01.:24:07.

-- on the canvas. Just walked back with his right leg as he handed it.

:24:08.:24:11.

Perhaps looking to feel the pace little bit now, Lawrence Okolie.

:24:12.:24:17.

Most important punch from Okolie is the jab, keep the distance, measure

:24:18.:24:22.

the gap, doesn't need to overreach with the right hand. That is what

:24:23.:24:26.

the kebab ski will one. His most important shot most definitely is

:24:27.:24:29.

the right hand over the top -- Jakubowski. He has the get his feet

:24:30.:24:34.

in the position to land that shot, Jakubowski, that is when he walks

:24:35.:24:38.

onto the big shots from Okolie. Difficult man to get to, Okolie, he

:24:39.:24:42.

uses his range very well. Inside the final 30 seconds now, concentration

:24:43.:24:47.

going to be absolutely key for Okolie to assure that he doesn't

:24:48.:24:51.

walk onto anything silly from his point of view. Jakubowski having

:24:52.:24:57.

more success, closing the distance, as perhaps Okolie begins to 30, his

:24:58.:25:03.

jab not as sharp as it was. There is the ten second club. Surely we will

:25:04.:25:10.

hear the final bell. -- clap. It should sue Lawrence Okolie get

:25:11.:25:13.

through to the second round. A strong finish by Jakubowski. But the

:25:14.:25:18.

two rounds of insurance built up by Okolie in rounds one and two should

:25:19.:25:22.

be enough to see him crowned the victor and go through to the second

:25:23.:25:26.

round of the 91 kilograms heavyweight one. A good performance

:25:27.:25:29.

from Okolie throughout the three rounds. He let it slip a little bit

:25:30.:25:35.

in the last round because he was feeling the pace little bit, but

:25:36.:25:40.

nevertheless, a great start to the contest for Okolie. He is seen now

:25:41.:25:44.

the box sensibly and he has learnt a lot from that. He has done well,

:25:45.:25:50.

there. Once we get the announcement, which we assume will declare Okolie

:25:51.:25:53.

as the winner in the second round of the tournament number two seed

:25:54.:26:01.

awaits. Those two men met earlier in the summer, and his opponent

:26:02.:26:05.

prevailed on a first round stoppage in World Series boxing at the five

:26:06.:26:13.

round competition, where boxers compete for their respective

:26:14.:26:15.

nations. That is the man who awaits in round number two. Okolie and

:26:16.:26:21.

Jakubowski embrace. Now let's go to the public address announcer and get

:26:22.:26:23.

the official announcement. CHEERING

:26:24.:26:52.

Ladies and gentlemen, the winner... Lawrence Okolie.

:26:53.:26:57.

COMMENTATOR: Lawrence Okolie through to the second round of the

:26:58.:27:01.

heavyweight Olympic tournament here in Rio 2016, acknowledging the

:27:02.:27:04.

support he is receiving from the crowd. In that second round he will

:27:05.:27:09.

meet the tournament number two seed, the reigning World Championship

:27:10.:27:14.

silver medallist and Olympia from 2012, the immensely talented Cuban

:27:15.:27:19.

boxer. STUDIO: Thank you, Ron. While we

:27:20.:27:23.

wait for Lawrence Okolie to make his way for a post-bout interview, let's

:27:24.:27:29.

wander around Copacabana in our Brazilian friends are over there

:27:30.:27:33.

enjoying themselves at beach bars, they are grooving away. This is a

:27:34.:27:38.

familiar sight right up and I'm Copacabana. They are singing in the

:27:39.:27:42.

early hours of the morning here -- up and down Copacabana. They are

:27:43.:27:46.

enjoying themselves with dancing and live music and cocktails. As we

:27:47.:27:57.

turned around this way,... Well, this is a rather large tractor

:27:58.:28:01.

collecting bins as well. Good evening, sir, this is a very

:28:02.:28:04.

important job, because when there are thousands of people on the

:28:05.:28:07.

beach, you know how busy it gets during the day, there is a gentleman

:28:08.:28:12.

fishing. Fishing is not an Olympic sport. Let's see, this could go

:28:13.:28:15.

hurriedly wrong. Good evening, what is your name, surprise have you

:28:16.:28:23.

caught anything? Can you show them, are they in the bag that? Can you

:28:24.:28:29.

show us? They don't look like the biggest fish I have ever seen. And

:28:30.:28:38.

what are they called? The name of the fish? They are ten fish. What

:28:39.:28:55.

are they called? Shova. Life fishing, what more could you want!

:28:56.:29:01.

Let's look around here -- Lyth fishing. We are at one end of cocoa

:29:02.:29:06.

cabana. We can walk for 20, 25 minutes, even half an hour where

:29:07.:29:12.

Sugarloaf Mountain is. We're not going to do that, not life walking

:29:13.:29:18.

on BBC Four! Down here is the BBC One studio, when Jason Mohammed is

:29:19.:29:21.

going to be taking you through the night throughout the course of the

:29:22.:29:25.

two weeks. If we were to walk about 20 minutes down here we would get to

:29:26.:29:28.

the Beach Volleyball Arena. That is where we are going to be shortly on

:29:29.:29:34.

BBC Four. We will show you life Beach Volleyball Arena later on.

:29:35.:29:37.

Sugarloaf is at the end. This is one of the sporting hubs at Rio 2016. We

:29:38.:29:44.

have the Olympic Park, and we have got Copacabana and the Deodoro.

:29:45.:29:48.

Debbie cabana is not only home to the beach bully or, it is also home

:29:49.:29:52.

to the road race -- Copacabana. -- Beach boy. Tomorrow it is the

:29:53.:29:58.

opportunity for Lizzie Armitstead to have a go, the women's road race is

:29:59.:30:02.

also going to take place right here on pleb cabana. We will cover that

:30:03.:30:08.

on and BBC Four as well. We have 16 days of full Olympic coverage for

:30:09.:30:13.

you. BBC One and BBC for our main live channels, and also we have got

:30:14.:30:17.

coverage throughout the website via the BBC sport ab. Whatever sport you

:30:18.:30:21.

would like to watch over the course of the Rio Olympics you can find it

:30:22.:30:26.

somewhere on the BBC. . We will hear from Lawrence Okolie very shortly,

:30:27.:30:29.

after his victory he is in to the second round of the boxing.

:30:30.:30:35.

We want you to feel inspired by the wonderful performances, there are so

:30:36.:30:42.

many athletes here and you will see them over the course of the next two

:30:43.:30:48.

weeks and they are doing so much hard work there want to ensure that

:30:49.:30:51.

they go home with something rather special.

:30:52.:30:57.

It is a great reminder of how much work was into making that Olympic

:30:58.:32:18.

dream. One man who is still sweating from his effort is Lawrence Okolie.

:32:19.:32:22.

What a fight that was, it looked like you enjoyed it. It was

:32:23.:32:28.

fantastic. It is about getting experience. I have been quite

:32:29.:32:33.

inexperienced. A big learning opportunity. Even though I want a

:32:34.:32:39.

gold medal, I am so been in the atmosphere and enjoying myself full

:32:40.:32:42.

is top tell people what you were doing during London 2012. I was

:32:43.:32:49.

working in a Donald and watching a few Olympic events in my lunch

:32:50.:32:54.

break. I managed to get myself here. It has only taken 25 bouts. You only

:32:55.:33:01.

made your debut for Team GB less than a year ago. It was in November.

:33:02.:33:12.

It has been massive. I want to shout out to the coaches and staff and

:33:13.:33:18.

without them, I would not have been the -- been able to push on as fast

:33:19.:33:22.

as I have. I want to shout out to all my family and friends. Someone

:33:23.:33:30.

else who's supported you is a company Joshua, your sparring

:33:31.:33:34.

partner. He has been a fantastic role model -- Anthony. There are

:33:35.:33:48.

year fans. I managed to come along way. Some of my friends and family

:33:49.:33:56.

have made the journey. It is an experience for them as well. I want

:33:57.:34:01.

to thank everyone back in London for supporting me as well. You will now

:34:02.:34:08.

face a big name Cuban boxer. Have you analysed him? He stopped me in

:34:09.:34:18.

my last fight two months ago. I will be facing my Demons. I will get that

:34:19.:34:23.

in there with someone who managed to do that and then I am hoping to go

:34:24.:34:27.

on and get the win. Thank you for your time. Brilliant talker,

:34:28.:34:34.

Lawrence Okolie, we will continue to follow him. We cut away from the

:34:35.:34:39.

rugby sevens to show you that fight and just to bring you up with the

:34:40.:34:46.

Australia Fiji game, it finished 53-0 to Australia. In group C, Great

:34:47.:34:54.

Britain have won both their Games so far over Brazil and Japan. They face

:34:55.:35:04.

Canada tomorrow, looks like a tasty clash. I spoke to Sir Clive Woodward

:35:05.:35:11.

to get his views. Thank you for talking to us. What have you made of

:35:12.:35:15.

the first day of the Olympics so far? It has been a wonderful day for

:35:16.:35:24.

the women's sevens tournament. Two outstanding teams, Australia and New

:35:25.:35:29.

Zealand, followed by the Canadian team and Team GB, a huge clash

:35:30.:35:37.

tomorrow between them. The Australians especially Charlotte

:35:38.:35:45.

cars like, they were remarkable. Carla McAllister was wonderful for

:35:46.:35:49.

the New Zealand team. Two standout players but Fiji did well, the USA

:35:50.:35:55.

team battled back, this evening's event was better, the heat really

:35:56.:36:00.

got to the team and Team GB were so much better this evening. Very

:36:01.:36:06.

confident they have a big match against Canada but as a sport,

:36:07.:36:11.

fantastic, the women did really well in a very busy day. What do you

:36:12.:36:16.

think the real challenges are for Team GB? The outstanding talent

:36:17.:36:22.

comes from Australia and New Zealand but how do you think they will do? I

:36:23.:36:30.

think Canada and Team GB can beat Australia and New Zealand, but today

:36:31.:36:32.

those teams were a cut above the rest. The key being about playing

:36:33.:36:36.

them, you have to keep hold of the ball. Every team that they play

:36:37.:36:42.

against gets pressurised. They have wonderful players in McAllister and

:36:43.:36:48.

Charlotte Caslick especially. If Team GB are to win, they have to

:36:49.:36:53.

keep hold of the ball and there were too many mistakes this morning. This

:36:54.:36:57.

evening was a lot better. Canada and Team GB can beat the favourites but

:36:58.:37:03.

it will be hard work but in rugby sevens you must keep the ball and if

:37:04.:37:07.

they can do that, they will have a wonderful Olympic Games. We have the

:37:08.:37:13.

men's rugby sevens to follow but I wanted to ask you about rug a sevens

:37:14.:37:17.

being in the Olympics, as a passionate rugby fans how do you

:37:18.:37:22.

feel about it being on the world stage? It is colossal. I was excited

:37:23.:37:30.

six years ago when the rugby sevens got the nod to be an Olympic sport.

:37:31.:37:34.

This development of the game, especially the women's game and to

:37:35.:37:38.

see how the women have come on, Fiji got a lot of investment from world

:37:39.:37:44.

rugby and so have Columbia and the smaller teams and they get better

:37:45.:37:47.

and better and when you see the sheer athleticism of some of the

:37:48.:37:51.

women athletes, it is wonderful to see. When you read all the CVs of

:37:52.:37:57.

the players involved, are lot of them have come from other sports, I

:37:58.:38:03.

think rugby is a wonderful athletic game that mums and dads will want

:38:04.:38:06.

their kids to play. We have seen some great athletes. I think it is

:38:07.:38:12.

important, it is a great game for men and women because of the sheer

:38:13.:38:17.

power and pace. Not so many rucks and all is as in the main game. We

:38:18.:38:23.

have seen some wonderful athletes, the women have done the game of

:38:24.:38:27.

rugby proud and it has been a privilege to be here to see it first

:38:28.:38:32.

hand and I think the Olympic family are delighted that rugby sevens is

:38:33.:38:36.

now a proper Olympic sport. It has been brilliant to watch. Just on

:38:37.:38:41.

that opportunity to showcase it, are you disappointed there are not more

:38:42.:38:49.

stars from the Home Nations? May be that could have got to grips with

:38:50.:38:52.

some of the people watching rugby for the first time. I am not sure.

:38:53.:38:57.

It is interesting to see what is happening because some of the star

:38:58.:39:04.

players like Quade Cooper, he did not make the Australian team, Brian

:39:05.:39:09.

Obama from South Africa has not made their team. It is a different game,

:39:10.:39:14.

you have to have amazing aerobic fitness and I think you will see

:39:15.:39:18.

this in the men's team when you see the Fiji team play. The amount of

:39:19.:39:21.

training they do is different from the 15 man game. If any of the

:39:22.:39:26.

big-name players that you talk about, from the UK or British game

:39:27.:39:31.

want to play in the Olympics, they have to give it at least 12 months

:39:32.:39:35.

or 24 months to get their aerobic fitness up to pace. It is a

:39:36.:39:39.

different game. The women's game today has been brilliant and we have

:39:40.:39:43.

some big heavyweight clash is coming tomorrow and the men's tournament

:39:44.:39:46.

when it starts and when you think of New Zealand and South Africa,

:39:47.:39:50.

Australia and all those amazing sides, Team GB, there will be great

:39:51.:39:54.

clashes and I think you will see some great athletes playing in the

:39:55.:39:59.

men's team and I'm not sure many of the star names would get into the

:40:00.:40:02.

team. Sonny Bill Williams is a big-name but he is not at an

:40:03.:40:06.

automatic start for the New Zealand team. Five more days of rugby sevens

:40:07.:40:10.

to look forward to, go and get some rest. Thank you. That was Sir Clive

:40:11.:40:18.

Woodward speaking to us earlier from the rugby sevens. We are on

:40:19.:40:23.

Copacabana and welcome to our coverage of the Olympic Games 2016

:40:24.:40:28.

in Rio. We have everything covered for you. One of the big stars, we

:40:29.:40:35.

thought beforehand it would be Adam PT, but today he broke a world

:40:36.:40:42.

record. In the first heat of the men's 100 metres breaststroke, he

:40:43.:40:48.

smashed his own world record. He came to these Olympic Games as a

:40:49.:40:51.

world record holder. You have to stay up quite late to see him in the

:40:52.:40:57.

semi-finals alongside Ross Murdoch in the men's 100m breaststroke and

:40:58.:41:00.

that will take place around three o'clock in the morning UK time. You

:41:01.:41:04.

will be able to see that on BBC One with Jason mohamid but we can hear

:41:05.:41:11.

more from Adam Peaty now. Before the Olympics, Rebecca Adlington went to

:41:12.:41:14.

see him in his training base in Loughborough. How are you? I am

:41:15.:41:28.

good. At five a.m., it you cannot go I am happy to be here. You're very

:41:29.:41:34.

positive. I will give you that. What a brilliant 100m breast stroke. Adam

:41:35.:41:39.

Peaty. While! Obviously you're on the block every day, do you

:41:40.:41:44.

visualise yourself in Rio? A little bit. I like to visualise a race.

:41:45.:41:49.

When you're in the water, all you can hear his numbers. When you take

:41:50.:41:55.

your first stroke it is so loud. This is a very big lead. It is not

:41:56.:42:00.

over. It looks like it might be Adam Peaty. He has got it on the last

:42:01.:42:04.

stroke and the world champion is Adam Peaty! Are you worried about a

:42:05.:42:12.

big crowd? I relish it. I love it. The more people the better. I can

:42:13.:42:16.

swim good that I cannot swim great when there is no crowd. You cannot

:42:17.:42:22.

say that, you broke the world record! It is different, it is

:42:23.:42:33.

London. I looked up at the scoreboard and it said 57.9. Your

:42:34.:42:41.

face! I looked at it and I looked at it again and then I had to take

:42:42.:42:45.

another look just to make sure it was not going to be adjusted. We are

:42:46.:42:54.

going fly kick underwater and then pull out. Do you think you would

:42:55.:42:57.

have had the same success without Mel? I do not think I would get

:42:58.:43:04.

anywhere near where am now. It has always been me and Mel and I trust

:43:05.:43:09.

to give me something ahead of the rest. He has said that he does not

:43:10.:43:15.

think he would have the success if he was not with you. You will make

:43:16.:43:24.

you cry on television! I am in a unique decision that I am able to

:43:25.:43:29.

have taken a 14-year-old young man to the Olympic Games as a world

:43:30.:43:32.

record-holder and I will always be thankful and tumble about that

:43:33.:43:36.

process. You know what the Olympics are like, you face all sorts of

:43:37.:43:41.

hurdles. I have got a boy that for eight years has never given in and

:43:42.:43:47.

have I taken their, who knows? I always think at Olympic Games, the

:43:48.:43:50.

amazing thing is that someone comes out and goes, hello, you have never

:43:51.:43:55.

heard of them, I was the underdog in Beijing... My goodness! It is! Do

:43:56.:44:03.

think there will be someone like that in the 100 metres breast book

:44:04.:44:07.

or do you think you are the best? Mel has always given me names, it is

:44:08.:44:15.

not a cockiness, it is more of a confidence. If someone pops out, so

:44:16.:44:20.

be it, I will welcome the challenge really. Looking at my training and

:44:21.:44:27.

where I am in the gym, I am definitely in the strongest position

:44:28.:44:31.

I have a Nairn. It is looking good. It is still my first Olympics. -- I

:44:32.:44:38.

have been in. I have proven I can come back with a few medals. I am

:44:39.:44:43.

hoping for my best possible performance. Hopefully he has got a

:44:44.:44:51.

big Olympic Games ahead and at three o'clock in the morning you can see

:44:52.:44:55.

Ross Murdoch and Adam Peaty goal in the semi-finals of the men's 100

:44:56.:44:59.

metres breaststroke. Will be concentrating on a number of sports

:45:00.:45:02.

over the next few hours, here is an idea of what you can watch at the

:45:03.:45:07.

moment. You can look at the Red Button, the sport at, there is

:45:08.:45:10.

women's weightlifting on the Red Button at the moment.

:45:11.:45:18.

Did you know that weightlifting provided Great Britain's first ever

:45:19.:45:25.

Olympic gold medal? It was a one arm lift at the inaugural modern games

:45:26.:45:30.

in Athens at 1896. You can dazzle your friends with that one! Also

:45:31.:45:35.

available on the Red Button it is the Superstars, the all-stars, the

:45:36.:45:39.

dream team of the USA, the basketball team and China. Team USA

:45:40.:45:43.

asked weighing on a luxury liner, the basketball side, just off the

:45:44.:45:50.

coast of Rio de Janeiro. -- are staying on a luxury liner. The USA

:45:51.:45:56.

are leading by 55-29. We will bring you some live table tennis. The

:45:57.:46:01.

combination is underway here in Rio. Two men's made it into the men's

:46:02.:46:07.

singles from Great Britain. Before we show you live action, here is

:46:08.:46:16.

everything you need to know about the magic of table tennis.

:46:17.:46:24.

Table tennis made its Olympic debut in South Korea in 1988 and has seen

:46:25.:46:30.

China dominate the competition. Players normally have smooth rubber

:46:31.:46:37.

on one side of their racket to provide the bin and a surface for

:46:38.:46:41.

speed on the other side. Players often like to spin the ball during a

:46:42.:46:45.

shot because it alters the trajectory. In singles, the serve

:46:46.:46:49.

only has the go from the service side of the court to the opponent's

:46:50.:46:55.

side. But in doubles, it must cross the court. During a rally, players

:46:56.:46:59.

must allow the ball to bounce once on the table before returning it.

:47:00.:47:06.

But this is a Fast and Furious sport requiring quick reactions. At the

:47:07.:47:10.

highest level, with a lightning reflexes, with the balls being

:47:11.:47:17.

struck around three times a second during the rally. A player must

:47:18.:47:24.

reach 11.2 win a singles match. -- 11 points to win. In the team

:47:25.:47:28.

events, singles and doubles matches are the best of five games. There

:47:29.:47:33.

are three players in each team. Two further singles matches can be

:47:34.:47:37.

played until one team has secured three wins. The format of the

:47:38.:47:41.

individual and team event is elimination. If a person or team

:47:42.:47:45.

loses a match, they will take no further part in the competition.

:47:46.:47:49.

That is all you need to know. Just telling about the British number

:47:50.:47:57.

one, Liam Pritchard has had a bye eh. Polge wrinkle is an action, --

:47:58.:48:05.

Paul. It is just about to start. Live table tennis coming to your way

:48:06.:48:12.

on four. A big moment here for Paul Drinkall. Five times the national

:48:13.:48:20.

champion. His second Olympics. A really consistent player. Ranked 58

:48:21.:48:28.

in the world, 26 years of age, up against this guy,, Aleksandar

:48:29.:48:38.

Karakasevic, a really good player. Ten years ago he was ranked there to

:48:39.:48:43.

do in the world. He is a little bit past his sell by date, but you try

:48:44.:48:47.

telling him that! He has got plenty of shots. He will be very, very good

:48:48.:48:52.

to watch. As far as Paul Drinkhall is concerned, hopefully not too

:48:53.:49:02.

good. But this Olympics for second. -- it is his fifth Olympics,

:49:03.:49:08.

Aleksandar Karakasevic. He is higher ranked, Paul Drinkhall, 58 in the

:49:09.:49:17.

world. Allen Clarke is his coach. -- Alan Cooke. He has a wealth of

:49:18.:49:23.

experience. Paul is 26 years old. He has an attacking game, it should be

:49:24.:49:26.

an interesting watch. Aleksandar Karakasevic is a man of power, the

:49:27.:49:32.

left-hander. -- a man of power on. He got to the third round in Athens,

:49:33.:49:37.

that is the best he has done in an Olympics, that was back in 2004.

:49:38.:49:45.

Second round in London 2012. A consistent performer at around that

:49:46.:49:49.

Lovell. Of course, the top-flight is more or less governed by the

:49:50.:49:58.

Chinese. They want all of -- they won the last 16 medals. Paul

:49:59.:50:03.

Drinkhall versus Aleksandar Karakasevic is about to begin. A

:50:04.:50:09.

pop-up received their that Drinkhall could get onto quickly.

:50:10.:50:19.

He has still got lightning reflexes, Aleksandar Karakasevic.

:50:20.:50:26.

A superbly talented player. But some wonder whether he has made the most

:50:27.:50:34.

of his talent, even though he has gone as high as 32 in the world. It

:50:35.:50:40.

is that's first match, it is a first round match. Aleksandar Karakasevic

:50:41.:50:46.

played in a preliminary match against an Australian player and won

:50:47.:50:47.

4-2. You can see both players desperate

:50:48.:51:09.

to get on the front foot and get a first strike in.

:51:10.:51:17.

It just won't happen for Karakasevic at the moment. A very solid start

:51:18.:51:30.

for Drinkhall. Yeah, wonderful short serve held up by the let. It is just

:51:31.:51:37.

what he wanted, the Serb loaded with spin, got the pop-up received and

:51:38.:51:41.

could get into ball three very quickly -- the serve loaded. Cobra

:51:42.:51:47.

like flick of the ball over the table.

:51:48.:52:08.

A feud gifts coming the way of Drinkhall. -- a few gifts. Baz

:52:09.:52:17.

hasn't found any kind of rhythm at the moment. -- Karakasevic. Changing

:52:18.:52:28.

the spins and the Serbs are very effectively, some short, some long

:52:29.:52:35.

for Paul Drinkhall. The service. The second ounce would have bounced on

:52:36.:52:38.

the baseline that. -- the second bounce.

:52:39.:52:44.

He has just not quite dialled in from the off here, the Serbian.

:52:45.:52:57.

Entitled the towel down every six points, these players.

:52:58.:53:09.

It is a big arena, a 10,000 seater. It is more like an aircraft hangar.

:53:10.:53:19.

Just about a mile away from the Olympic Park.

:53:20.:53:28.

That is more what he is capable of. Yeah, he has got a flashing blade on

:53:29.:53:36.

the backhand, deceptively tough for Paul to get a read on that one.

:53:37.:53:44.

It may be too late to rescue this opening game, but he is showing us

:53:45.:53:50.

now that he will be a threat in this opening match. He had a fate which

:53:51.:53:53.

ball, hence the finger aloft an apology. -- edged ball.

:53:54.:54:05.

Setting up the point beautifully with some bury a bold directional

:54:06.:54:12.

changes off the backhand. Five consecutive points -- variable

:54:13.:54:15.

directional changes. It is not too late to rescue this game.

:54:16.:54:28.

Desperate to keep the serve low and render it attack Kabul, this is what

:54:29.:54:31.

it is all about. -- on attack Kabul. Time-out being called. Early on,

:54:32.:54:45.

each player is allowed one per match. This is necessary after six

:54:46.:54:51.

successive points to pick up a bit here. It is a worrying patch, this.

:54:52.:55:04.

I think the coach is called that, Paul called time out there

:55:05.:55:08.

evidently. It gives him a bit of time, desperate to hold onto the

:55:09.:55:12.

momentum. He has got a second serving opportunity to do just that,

:55:13.:55:14.

and get the game ball, possibly. Alan Cooke will have logged which is

:55:15.:55:31.

his most effective service. Now is the time to employ just that against

:55:32.:55:34.

this power on the left-hander from Serbia. -- against this volunteered

:55:35.:55:39.

left-hander. -- talented. A rush of points now for the serve.

:55:40.:55:58.

It is the first to two ahead. At last, a spell is broken. Game

:55:59.:56:24.

point. Pitchford is at the top left of the picture. He is in action

:56:25.:56:27.

tomorrow. A wonderful drop shot from

:56:28.:56:43.

Karakasevic there to square writ of. It will be decided with two points

:56:44.:56:45.

clear here. -- square it off. Big opportunity there. It is game

:56:46.:57:03.

point. Karakasevic. Well, that is a formidable comeback.

:57:04.:57:27.

9-2 it was. Absolutely, what a comeback, seven in a row for Baz,

:57:28.:57:32.

remarkable turnaround. That, you would imagine, would make Paul

:57:33.:57:34.

Drinkhall a little tense -- for Karakasevic.

:57:35.:57:42.

How good will he feel going in the game to? It is a real bonus, a

:57:43.:57:49.

couple of timely returns. -- gain two. What a miraculous escape for

:57:50.:57:50.

the Serbian player. He will regain his confidence and

:57:51.:58:02.

his rhythm. It is quite a forgiving format, with the best-of-7 games,

:58:03.:58:05.

the race of all games five of these players. I am sure that Paul will

:58:06.:58:08.

not be hitting the panic button quite yet. Pretty well shared out,

:58:09.:58:18.

it was that close a game. But with violently fluctuating form. But it

:58:19.:58:21.

was mostly about Karakasevic. We will see if Drinkhall can change

:58:22.:58:27.

that in game number two. Well, he doesn't like yielding any

:58:28.:58:50.

table or any quarter position does Karakasevic the Drinkhall. He is

:58:51.:58:54.

trying to state tight to the table and Russian Drinkhall. That is

:58:55.:59:00.

clever. -- and Russian Drinkhall. What a shot! It was a fast body

:59:01.:59:04.

serve into the pocket of the left-hander. It exploded off the

:59:05.:59:08.

backhand side. It has been very solid off that wing.

:59:09.:59:18.

Paul Cleverley showing all of his smorgasbord of service variation.

:59:19.:59:30.

Having a little flick on the backhand.

:59:31.:59:41.

Well, it is having great effect of of his backhand serve, Karakasevic,

:59:42.:59:46.

really causing Paul problems. Good little Bourdy JAMA, just

:59:47.:00:06.

handcuffing Karakasevic. -- body jam.

:00:07.:00:15.

It is still really all about the service. Win or lose it. Paul

:00:16.:00:24.

drinkable is doing a good job again at the start of the second game. --

:00:25.:00:36.

Paul Drinkhall. A good run for the Brett. -- Britain. -- the British

:00:37.:00:45.

competitor. How good was that? That was

:00:46.:00:56.

masterful, the backhand. Solid, difficult to read. So stylish.

:00:57.:01:04.

Reminding him that he had a big lead in the first game and lost it. He

:01:05.:01:12.

seems to switch on for periods of absolute sublime Williams,

:01:13.:01:15.

Aleksandar Karakasevic, then suddenly goes a wall. Good attacking

:01:16.:01:31.

on the forehand. -- brilliance. Six game points now to level up at one

:01:32.:01:34.

apiece. He has still got some brilliance

:01:35.:01:53.

left in this game, seems to play at his best when his back is against

:01:54.:01:57.

the wall. Surely he cannot rescue this game?

:01:58.:02:08.

He is countering Paul's explosive power really well, he has lightning

:02:09.:02:12.

quick hands, the Serbian. Disturbingly for English fans, that

:02:13.:02:43.

is four consecutive points for Aleksandar Karakasevic who looks

:02:44.:02:47.

threatening when he is right up against it. It is quite astonishing.

:02:48.:02:53.

Four game points have come and gone, here is game point number five. He

:02:54.:02:57.

writes his own rules does this guy. Can he finished the job? If he

:02:58.:03:31.

trails 2-0 he will be a little bit hand-carved with this swing, you

:03:32.:03:42.

would imagine. -- handcuffed. From 10-4, six game points have come and

:03:43.:03:45.

gone and we are in the same position we were in the first game.

:03:46.:03:57.

Well played. It is a very aggressive forehand flick return there. Surely

:03:58.:04:06.

the seventh time. The fast longer serve got home. And

:04:07.:04:34.

that will be huge relief. So nearly. And you can see, he has got some

:04:35.:04:41.

character this guy. He has been like Houdini. He almost escaped there and

:04:42.:04:47.

Paul drink all was delighted to get that second game. -- Paul Drinkhall.

:04:48.:04:55.

These are heady times for table tennis in GB.

:04:56.:05:10.

Paul here with Liam Pitchford and Sam Walker, they will be fancied to

:05:11.:05:20.

do well in the team event. Again, a fair share out on points won on

:05:21.:05:27.

serve and lost on serve. It is a very difficult match. It is about

:05:28.:05:32.

the ebbs and flows of Aleksandar Karakasevic. He is so fast in his

:05:33.:05:37.

attack, he is countering the attacks from Paul very well and then

:05:38.:05:41.

suddenly turns defence into attack and a flash at side. Paul, it is a

:05:42.:05:49.

rhythm must match for him and he does not know what is coming next.

:05:50.:05:56.

He is normally more dominant off his own serve -- a match without rhythm

:05:57.:05:58.

for him. Aleksandar Karakasevic looked

:05:59.:06:31.

worryingly fed up missing out on a two game lead. He has got himself

:06:32.:06:39.

back into this. He is starting to show the full range of his

:06:40.:06:46.

repertoire which is formidable. He has got vicious racket head speed,

:06:47.:06:48.

irrespective of where he stood, that was deep chord position, but well

:06:49.:06:51.

played. -- court. When he is playing like this, there

:06:52.:07:06.

really is very little that Paul Drinkhall can do about it. Is it

:07:07.:07:11.

just a hot streak that will burn out?

:07:12.:07:23.

He has got quick eyes and hands and sees the game very early and

:07:24.:07:31.

understand when Paul is on the table and what is likely to come next.

:07:32.:07:41.

Got to take it to him when you can, it is easier said than done.

:07:42.:08:18.

Of course for Paul it is rather difficult because this is his first

:08:19.:08:25.

match out here in this arena in live match conditions and of course for

:08:26.:08:28.

Aleksandar Karakasevic, he has had a winner already as you alluded to, he

:08:29.:08:32.

will be far more settled in the arena. He honestly feels he should

:08:33.:08:41.

have made it. It was there for him. -- obviously.

:08:42.:08:59.

Great acceleration off the backhand side, he needed more time to set up

:09:00.:09:03.

and release the racket tip. A good spell here. A good spell from

:09:04.:09:22.

Paul Drinkhall. Aleksandar Karakasevic was coming at him. You

:09:23.:09:28.

can see where Paul is going, he feels if he can get into the body of

:09:29.:09:32.

Aleksandar Karakasevic, he will be rewarded but he is pretty quick and

:09:33.:09:33.

gets out of the way well. There from the serve. Pushing him

:09:34.:10:06.

away from the table. 7-3 becomes 7-7. A little lucky but he put it

:10:07.:10:19.

away well using every square inch of the table to good effect their,

:10:20.:10:21.

great accuracy from Paul Drinkhall. Things are going his way. You can

:10:22.:10:33.

see, Aleksandar Karakasevic is not enjoying it! Six consecutive points

:10:34.:10:40.

for Paul Drinkhall, he is so good at changing the direction off the

:10:41.:10:43.

backhand side, getting a little emotional.

:10:44.:10:55.

He knows this game is far from done and dusted, you just never know with

:10:56.:11:17.

the Serbian. He has that two points on his own serve now, Aleksandar

:11:18.:11:22.

Karakasevic and is very dangerous in that regard.

:11:23.:11:28.

Great return. And Paul Drinkhall moves ahead. Two Games to one and a

:11:29.:11:46.

much easier conversation now. It seems that Paul Drinkhall is being

:11:47.:11:51.

rewarded for being that the more vocal. The body language was good,

:11:52.:11:58.

more positive and Cook is delighted as you can see. Kind of getting in

:11:59.:12:05.

the face of Aleksandar Karakasevic. A man who was totally dedicated

:12:06.:12:10.

along with his family to the sport when he was just 11 years of age she

:12:11.:12:14.

went to China to see how it is really done, no better place.

:12:15.:12:19.

Retained a Chinese coach for around a decade before Alan Cooke. He has

:12:20.:12:26.

just got better and better. Still Aleksandar Karakasevic will be

:12:27.:12:44.

a little disappointed that he is not doing better on serve. The serve is

:12:45.:12:51.

normally a dominant factor in table tennis but not so in this game, they

:12:52.:13:04.

are returning very well, these two. Paul has to keep the variation in

:13:05.:13:14.

the attack line. He is 2-1 Games in France. -- Games in front. How many

:13:15.:13:32.

times is that happening to him? Away it goes. It is a game decided by

:13:33.:13:40.

millimetres, such fine margins in this vast sport. Well played, he is

:13:41.:13:49.

changing the point of attack. Fast though he is, Paul Drinkhall.

:13:50.:14:06.

Getting up act. Could not quite cope with the serve, Aleksandar

:14:07.:14:09.

Karakasevic, but well finished. He got his body out of the way, skipped

:14:10.:14:14.

to the side and hit the forehand beautifully, Paul Drinkhall.

:14:15.:14:26.

It rather popped up from him, a rare shot from Aleksandar Karakasevic.

:14:27.:15:03.

Good response from the Serbian. Well, he suddenly just goes on these

:15:04.:15:12.

runs of points, Karakasevic. Brilliant! Turning defensive to

:15:13.:15:25.

attack. One of his best point in the match, Paul Drinkhall, there. Looks

:15:26.:15:29.

out of it. Such a Aussie atmosphere in here,

:15:30.:15:48.

four tables. It is all kicking off -- such a buzz -- buzzy atmosphere

:15:49.:16:03.

in here. You can see he is changing the point of attack.

:16:04.:16:09.

It is a terrific serve, loaded with spin, really disguised forehand

:16:10.:16:13.

attack. A chance there. It goes begging, and

:16:14.:16:28.

they all level pegging in this fourth game. -- they are level

:16:29.:16:31.

pegging. A very good job of pushing Drinkhall

:16:32.:16:55.

back again. He has got an efficient game style, he doesn't move around

:16:56.:16:59.

as much as Drinkhall, but he doesn't need to, his hands skills of a

:17:00.:17:03.

nominal, and his directional control is exquisite. -- after nominal. And

:17:04.:17:13.

expensive shot to level up again. He senses this is a key game, if

:17:14.:17:18.

Drinkhall wins it. I don't think there is only coming back the

:17:19.:17:22.

Karakasevic. First of four, remember. -- any coming back. First

:17:23.:17:25.

of four games. Again, same problem, he looks

:17:26.:17:39.

dangerous behind the net. Dynamite! Again, the serve is

:17:40.:18:09.

impossible to read. Two points away from a 3-1 lead. Quick to pounce on

:18:10.:18:15.

to this, Paul popped up an explosive finish from Drinkhall.

:18:16.:18:23.

Now, a load of points being one on the serve. -- being won.

:18:24.:18:37.

This time, Karakasevic away from the table. What is he on about? Having

:18:38.:18:48.

given himself I think missing the opportunity, he or two game points.

:18:49.:18:52.

-- here are. Oh, so good, clinical finish.

:18:53.:19:14.

Drinkhall should be very happy at the way he has responded. Dropping

:19:15.:19:15.

that second game. Just going away from the table.

:19:16.:19:28.

Karakasevic probably needs to get his mind to hear. He probably will

:19:29.:19:34.

welcome the opportunity. This is a wonderful ball from Drinkhall,

:19:35.:19:37.

setting it up, pulling the trigger down the line on the forehand,

:19:38.:19:41.

wonderful spite to the short part of the court, the light etched over his

:19:42.:19:46.

face, as well it should be. Karakasevic is a tricky opponent.

:19:47.:19:52.

Paul is 3-1 to the good, that will delight the English fans.

:19:53.:19:58.

Looking relaxed. Which is not what you can say about Karakasevic. He

:19:59.:20:07.

hasn't exactly got a table then as player's build, has he? -- table

:20:08.:20:15.

tennis player. A little bit more dominant on serve from both players

:20:16.:20:22.

there. Karakasevic winning the majority of points on his serve, but

:20:23.:20:26.

not good enough in the end to take the game.

:20:27.:20:34.

He is getting distracted by something, I can't quite work out

:20:35.:20:39.

what it is. You can see he is trying to have a go. The umpires here,

:20:40.:20:46.

completely contrasting body language there, Drinkhall was animated and

:20:47.:20:52.

dynamic around the table. Karakasevic gesticulating in

:20:53.:20:53.

frustration. Well, he has got the ability to turn

:20:54.:21:04.

it around. Has he got the application here?

:21:05.:21:11.

The serve more and more is causing Karakasevic problems.

:21:12.:21:36.

That is a terrific shot receive from Paul Drinkhall, kept it tight to the

:21:37.:21:44.

net. -- shot receive. He kept it really shot as well. We have the

:21:45.:21:50.

time out here for the service. One time out to each team per match.

:21:51.:21:57.

Got a little unlucky there, the ball kissing the net and spilling wide.

:21:58.:22:03.

Drinkhall animated, this is good, getting in the face of the Serbian

:22:04.:22:08.

opponent. Drinkhall did when the test event here at the end of last

:22:09.:22:17.

years ago did win. In November. He was the only non-South American to

:22:18.:22:21.

play, he was the top seed. It must have been good experience. That

:22:22.:22:28.

said, a table is a table. But he has come here and got itchy and to the

:22:29.:22:33.

conditions. He seems to be doing well enough here. -- got tuned to

:22:34.:22:35.

the conditions. Well, he is turning this around

:22:36.:23:08.

nicely, the forehand down the line that he is biking is causing

:23:09.:23:14.

problems for Karakasevic. -- is biking. The third game is looking

:23:15.:23:16.

more and more important now. What has happened here as well that

:23:17.:23:33.

the Serbian can be less expensive, he is more inhibited because of the

:23:34.:23:36.

scoreboard pressure now. It is allowing Paul Drinkhall the

:23:37.:23:41.

opportunity to play with abandon and get on the front foot quicker in the

:23:42.:23:43.

rally. Yes, the serve again did the job,

:23:44.:24:09.

but he kept his thoughts on the accelerator, allowed Karakasevic

:24:10.:24:13.

nothing. -- he kept his foot on the accelerator.

:24:14.:24:22.

That is a good return. Well, he is getting a lot more joy, Paul

:24:23.:24:29.

Drinkhall, from serving to the Karakasevic forehand, going to the

:24:30.:24:32.

backhand. That is his favourite play.

:24:33.:24:41.

It is the noise may be from the adjoining table that is upsetting

:24:42.:24:47.

him, but he should be used a lot. That is what happens, and he knows

:24:48.:24:48.

it. -- used to that. It is a real hullabaloo from the

:24:49.:25:01.

adjacent table, absolutely. You can see he is distracted, he is looking

:25:02.:25:04.

over their, he needs to get his mind back on the job because Drinkhall is

:25:05.:25:09.

really getting get-together. He is becoming increasingly animated. --

:25:10.:25:16.

getting it together. The reason is, there is a Brazilian player who is

:25:17.:25:22.

obviously drawing most of the attention there.

:25:23.:25:30.

And although Paul Drinkhall is just three points away from the match,

:25:31.:25:36.

you still feel that there is an awful lot of table tennis left with

:25:37.:25:39.

this danger man here. Chickens are being counted.

:25:40.:25:48.

Oh, such a clever short shot there. No way to go for Karakasevic.

:25:49.:26:06.

Super. Again, pushing it back. And in terms of five match points.

:26:07.:26:19.

Clinical finish. A worrying start could easily have been two games

:26:20.:26:35.

down. But he turned it around, Karakasevic, but Drinkhall did what

:26:36.:26:39.

he had to do. Very much, you was a very awkward opponent, very

:26:40.:26:43.

talented. Alan Cook is delighted with Paul Drinkhall. He lives to see

:26:44.:26:50.

another day. Plenty of smiles now. Drinkhall will go off and play Gao

:26:51.:27:00.

Ning of Singapore in round two tomorrow afternoon. Karakasevic will

:27:01.:27:03.

need some consoling. I wouldn't want to be the guy to try and console

:27:04.:27:08.

him! Absolutely, he is a big unit of rather frustrated there. The right

:27:09.:27:11.

for the men in red, Drinkhall safely through. Through the second round.

:27:12.:27:25.

Let's look of a he salutes his fans. -- let's look at the match point. He

:27:26.:27:30.

salutes his fans. Karakasevic doing well to nick the second game. He

:27:31.:27:34.

looked as if he might take the third. From then on, when he lost

:27:35.:27:38.

that 12-10, Drinkhall seemed to have his number. Drink or was very

:27:39.:27:44.

effective, serving into the forehand of the Serb more often, the backhand

:27:45.:27:50.

was red-hot tonight. It is Paul Drinkhall who goes through in the

:27:51.:27:55.

end. Three successive games, 11-5 in the fifth, that was well played. He

:27:56.:28:03.

will play Gao Ning tomorrow. STUDIO: Successful Paul Drinkhall in

the UK, load of coverage of this first day of the Olympics continues

:28:22.:28:24.

in BBC One for the next few hours as well as BBC Four. You can catch up

:28:25.:28:28.

with a number of spores across the Red Button, the website and the BBC

:28:29.:28:34.

sport app. We are going to show you a new sport for us, it is the first

:28:35.:28:38.

time we have shown it on these Olympic Games. This is one of the

:28:39.:28:40.

lovely BBC guides the weightlifting. Men's weightlifting appeared at the

:28:41.:28:53.

first modern Olympics, and has featured in every games since 1920,

:28:54.:28:58.

while the women's competition only made its debut in Sydney in 2000.

:28:59.:29:03.

The aim of weightlifting is simple - to lift the greatest way possible.

:29:04.:29:08.

There are two types of lift, the snatch and the Queen jerk.

:29:09.:29:11.

Competitors have the complete both lifts, and the winner is the person

:29:12.:29:15.

whose combined weight total is the greatest. This match is a lift

:29:16.:29:20.

whether barbel is raised across the head in a continuous movement. The

:29:21.:29:25.

athlete starts in a squat position, and must flip the weight into a

:29:26.:29:28.

position above their head. When they are secure in this position, they

:29:29.:29:33.

rise and complete the movement. The jerk lift is performed in two

:29:34.:29:38.

stages, the barbel is gripped palms downward and pulled in a single

:29:39.:29:43.

movement, but the jerk is where the athlete bends and extends the legs

:29:44.:29:47.

and arms to bring the barbel to. Four. They must stand still -- the

:29:48.:29:54.

full stretch. Each weightlifter has three attempts in both the snatch

:29:55.:30:00.

and the jerk with the combined total of the highest two successful lists

:30:01.:30:04.

determining the overall result. If after three attempts they fail to

:30:05.:30:08.

register I directly they will be eliminated from the competition.

:30:09.:30:12.

Olympic weightlifting requires more than strength, Barnes, stability and

:30:13.:30:17.

speed. It is essential to a weightlifter's quest for glory --

:30:18.:30:17.

balance. It is time for some live

:30:18.:30:29.

weightlifting. It is the women's 48 category. The competitor from

:30:30.:30:35.

Thailand is leading. We will go back to the real centre. They are asking

:30:36.:30:49.

to stop the competition. Just as we see the replay. What to think? It is

:30:50.:30:56.

a difficult angle to see. The elbow closest to us, I am not sure at

:30:57.:30:59.

first it was shoulder movement, but there, I can get that. The jury have

:31:00.:31:07.

called the two side referees over and I think they are going to

:31:08.:31:11.

overturn this decision and give them a telling off at the same time.

:31:12.:31:15.

These are the scorecards that we can see. This is where the coaches

:31:16.:31:22.

nominate the weight, very tactical. Just waiting for a decision on that

:31:23.:31:26.

previous left. They have not done it yet.

:31:27.:31:33.

The American is getting ready to come out. No left, there is the

:31:34.:31:46.

announcement. Now a question, is it Morghan Whitney King who is coming

:31:47.:31:49.

out or do they take the bar back down to 99? She is currently on 100

:31:50.:31:54.

and surely Wei-Ling Chen has the right to know what has just

:31:55.:31:58.

happened? The bar has gone back down to 99. They will have to come back

:31:59.:32:09.

out. That was a really tough call. Morghan Whitney King is frustrated

:32:10.:32:16.

but she will go back end and Wei-Ling Chen will be back out. It

:32:17.:32:22.

is frustrating for Morghan Whitney King, she is ready and prepared,

:32:23.:32:25.

ready for that split second and now she has to hang on for a couple of

:32:26.:32:32.

minutes. Getting into that film is really difficult. And up and down

:32:33.:32:36.

offer motions all through the competition -- zone. She has gone

:32:37.:32:45.

up. Chen Wei-Ling has gone up. There is an interesting decision.

:32:46.:32:57.

Morghan Whitney King is back out. Her first attempt at 100 kilos. She

:32:58.:33:09.

does have on record, a record of 113. She has already been in good

:33:10.:33:17.

form, a personal best of around five kilos in the snatch earlier today.

:33:18.:33:44.

Four kilos up on her previous best on the international platform. I do

:33:45.:33:54.

believe, it was her fellow countrywoman who won the first gold

:33:55.:34:00.

medal at the first Olympic Games when women's weightlifting was

:34:01.:34:06.

included. That was the 48 kilo category in the Sydney Olympics.

:34:07.:34:09.

Great to see other letters coming through. Absolutely smashed it. Lost

:34:10.:34:18.

track of how much an improvement that is overall. 11 kilos in the

:34:19.:34:25.

total so far. Does not really move her feet very wide, leaves the hips

:34:26.:34:28.

behind but she is clearly strong enough. Chen Wei-Ling, 100 kilos on

:34:29.:34:40.

the bar. First left at 98. That is OK. That will be a success the

:34:41.:34:48.

left... No. Really? I am asking why. I want to see a replay. Goodness me,

:34:49.:35:00.

what does she have to do? She got one white line from the judge and

:35:01.:35:11.

two reds. Interesting replay. I am sorry, I cannot see any movement in

:35:12.:35:15.

the elbows, that is not the best angle, clearly the referee is in a

:35:16.:35:17.

better position, but that is really tough. I am strict in terms of

:35:18.:35:25.

refereeing and I would have passed that. Maybe we are a bit too far

:35:26.:35:35.

back to see. Roilya Ranaivosoa at 100 kilos. Her third and final

:35:36.:35:42.

attempt. She has been successful at 93. Missed at 98. Attempting 100.

:35:43.:35:53.

No. Well, she asked her coaches for a two kilo increase, she believed

:35:54.:35:58.

she could do it, she gave it a good go and waves to the crowd, that sigh

:35:59.:36:03.

of relief. She is left with 173, currently in third position but I

:36:04.:36:08.

think we will see her dropout of medal position, lots of letters left

:36:09.:36:17.

to come. -- lifters. Her Olympics is over this time around. Works hard,

:36:18.:36:31.

it uses up so much energy. Adjust the great, gets the oxygen then, big

:36:32.:36:35.

drive to arm's-length but cannot quite steady herself. Some

:36:36.:36:44.

perspective here, she has lifted 113 kilos in a jerk. So far, two failed.

:36:45.:36:52.

Chen Wei-Ling needs this to stay in the cup. -- in the competition. I do

:36:53.:37:05.

not know. She has still been failed. She is still throwing her arms

:37:06.:37:09.

around, she cannot believe it. The jury table has that nice and still.

:37:10.:37:17.

How frustrating. You can see the disappointment and frustration,

:37:18.:37:20.

wide? It looks as though that will be a successful left, no movement

:37:21.:37:26.

from the jury. I thought there oscillation but it paused before she

:37:27.:37:32.

went Fred. Good overhead. No movement. I would like to know what

:37:33.:37:35.

the referee saw there because I am struggling to see it herself.

:37:36.:37:50.

Zhanyl Okoeva with 100 kilos on the bar.

:37:51.:38:04.

That is good. Timing to perfection. Just does not have the legs to drive

:38:05.:38:19.

overhead. That often happens when you try and shelve the bar too early

:38:20.:38:24.

with the arms. All the effort should come from the legs, driving through

:38:25.:38:32.

your starting position. Finishes with 169 kilos. The bar was in

:38:33.:38:38.

contact with the legs all the way up, good extension with the hips,

:38:39.:38:44.

glancing off the guys, at the timing was really good. You can see from

:38:45.:38:50.

that angle how far the hips were hind the bar.

:38:51.:39:02.

Beatriz Elizabeth Piron Candelarion, first attempt. Big adjustment in the

:39:03.:39:14.

hands. Nicely to arm's-length, no movement in the elbows. The reason

:39:15.:39:18.

she adjusted the hands wide, it was less distance for the bar to travel

:39:19.:39:23.

will stop it is OK if you have the flexibility to do that, I never

:39:24.:39:29.

could. I am not jealous! She has a total of 187. Still a number of

:39:30.:39:34.

lifters still to come. Drops the chest a little there, good

:39:35.:39:46.

adjustment. Very efficient in the overhead division. No problem. This

:39:47.:40:00.

is her first attempt in the clean and jerk. It is Margarita

:40:01.:40:09.

Yelisseyeva. Knees actually touched. Really good

:40:10.:40:27.

overhead. Clearly the clean is the week as part of the left. You do not

:40:28.:40:33.

see that very often, it is the sign of weak glutes but I do not think I

:40:34.:40:39.

can use the word weak for these girls, they are so strong. 183. What

:40:40.:40:50.

this, knees touch on the way up. They touch as she stands as well.

:40:51.:40:57.

Incredible positioning. Still got her grip on the bar. Let it go now.

:40:58.:41:07.

They do not see that very often. She has just snuck into first position

:41:08.:41:12.

in the moment. She is slightly lighter than the American, Morghan

:41:13.:41:26.

Whitney King who is out now to make an attempt at 103 kilos.

:41:27.:41:40.

No legs left. At the moment she sits in second position. If we get a

:41:41.:41:53.

replay of the clean it you will see there are a couple of bounces before

:41:54.:41:58.

she manages to stand. She does well to keep the bar moving. Want to try

:41:59.:42:06.

that Akpom, do some squats, pause at the bottom and try and stand. The

:42:07.:42:12.

bounces keep it moving. Just runs out of leg drive. She will have to

:42:13.:42:21.

follow herself at the moment. She has all ready lifted a PB. She knows

:42:22.:42:33.

she is not going to win a medal, she would be crazy to increase it any

:42:34.:42:34.

further. Still sitting at 103 that would take

:42:35.:43:02.

2186 and in second spot. It is the quickest two minutes of your life

:43:03.:43:05.

when you are following yourself. Particularly if you have missed. No

:43:06.:43:10.

time to breathe or let your legs recover. She will still be breathing

:43:11.:43:15.

very heavily as she comes onto the platform for this final attempt. 30

:43:16.:43:23.

years of age, only been lifting competitively since 2012, she was a

:43:24.:43:29.

foot taller before. She took up weightlifting in 2012. --

:43:30.:43:36.

footballer. Here she is, trying to get herself into the second position

:43:37.:43:40.

in terms of total, a number of lifters still to come, but well and

:43:41.:43:44.

truly PB already. It is their! Can she stick it? So

:43:45.:44:05.

close. It does not get much closer. It is 11 kilo BB. A brilliant

:44:06.:44:12.

performance, she will look back on this and reflect and she will not be

:44:13.:44:16.

too disappointed. In the moment right now, yes disappointment, but

:44:17.:44:20.

it was never going to be a medal. Brilliant effort, though.

:44:21.:44:28.

Just watch and see how close this lift really was. Arm's-length,

:44:29.:44:38.

running out of space on the platform. Maybe if she had another

:44:39.:44:42.

five metres, she would have chased it down. This is the Indian

:44:43.:44:57.

competitor Chanu Saikhom Mirabai, her first attempt at 104. That would

:44:58.:45:02.

put in second position at the moment.

:45:03.:45:13.

No, well it was at arms length, and then it wasn't. There really is no

:45:14.:45:32.

messing around, it is either in the right place or it is not, they are

:45:33.:45:36.

not pushing the bar with the arms, they are driving with the legs,

:45:37.:45:40.

simply catching the get samples like length. The body is not the best

:45:41.:45:43.

position underneath the bar, you are going to struggle. I think we kind

:45:44.:45:48.

of missed the double body weight mark, that was ages ago, we are well

:45:49.:45:53.

in excess now of double body weight, six kilos over.

:45:54.:46:00.

She is going to have to follow herself. Sit down, collect her

:46:01.:46:09.

thoughts. Well she has gone up. She has to try and buy herself sometime.

:46:10.:46:16.

We said just the second ago about two minutes is not very long to

:46:17.:46:20.

recover, by increasing it just a kilo it forces out me a few of Japan

:46:21.:46:29.

for her first attempt. She really struggled in the first attempt,

:46:30.:46:33.

finally got herself a successful lift, but it was a big, big effort

:46:34.:46:38.

to get there. This is the first two. She is bringing 81 kilos into this,

:46:39.:46:44.

she is on 105 now, this would put her in second position at the

:46:45.:46:45.

moment. Oh, bounces out, that was tough. Oh,

:46:46.:46:58.

you can see the body shaking. So strong overhead. Oh, she has done.

:46:59.:47:04.

Mike that is a gutsy, gutsy effort. There was nothing easy about that.

:47:05.:47:09.

She has had a rough run so for the competition. She had to fight all

:47:10.:47:16.

the way the end. That gives her a total of 186. Now she can ask the

:47:17.:47:28.

questions, what do I need? Here -- here on is on 187 -- Piron. Miyake

:47:29.:47:43.

has catapulted herself, but we still have six lifters left in the

:47:44.:47:49.

competition. She needs something big to stay in the competition. Piron,

:47:50.:47:57.

Dominican Republic. Currently the leader, trying to extend it. Five

:47:58.:48:01.

other lifters to come. She spent a long time with the bar

:48:02.:48:24.

across her shoulders. At what stage is it too long to have it sitting

:48:25.:48:31.

there? I think the question comes... It is not so much about how long it

:48:32.:48:36.

is there, you want to get it off as quick as possible obviously. It is

:48:37.:48:40.

how much energy she has wasted on the first part of the lift. Watch

:48:41.:48:46.

her, she doesn't stand straight up, bounces, bounces, bounces. The bar

:48:47.:48:50.

is on her windpipe, she is not breathing. Only now can she

:48:51.:48:52.

breathed, and that is what is causing the problems. It took too

:48:53.:48:59.

much out of her, that first phase of the lift, that is why she struggled.

:49:00.:49:03.

She gave it a good effort, though. Challenging length. Now, a bit of

:49:04.:49:13.

gamesmanship is coming on here. Piron will have to come back out.

:49:14.:49:19.

Oh, no. OK, so we were chatting about this rule early. Let me try

:49:20.:49:23.

and explain. They have changed the rules. Piron is following herself.

:49:24.:49:28.

She has just lifted, she has the come back out. She only gets one

:49:29.:49:33.

minute because another lift was caught in between. Let's see if she

:49:34.:49:37.

can stand this time with no recovery. It is absolute

:49:38.:49:41.

gamesmanship to make her go back out there. 105 kilos.

:49:42.:49:55.

Oh, shame again. Well, as lifters retrain as if we are following our

:49:56.:50:13.

souls, we train to be fit for that. Very, very rarely will these lifters

:50:14.:50:18.

do maximum lift in the gym and have less than a minute recovery. That

:50:19.:50:23.

was tough, that was a huge ask. She was so close. Left at 102. Still in

:50:24.:50:29.

first position for the moment, though. But still a number of

:50:30.:50:38.

lifters to come. Her total is up with 187. I'm not sure if it is

:50:39.:50:41.

going to be enough to stay in the medals. But she is there, anything

:50:42.:50:46.

is possible. Five lifters to come, though. She has to go back to the

:50:47.:50:50.

warm up room, sit and watch, nothing else you can do. Who is our leader

:50:51.:50:57.

after the snatch? She is out reasonably early, you think. This

:50:58.:50:59.

attempt at 106. Sopita Tanasan of Thailand. That was

:51:00.:51:24.

comfortable. I am questioning why she has got her starting rate down.

:51:25.:51:30.

OK, she has a lead after the snatch of seven kilos, but that was

:51:31.:51:36.

comfortable. But she is now in Gold medal position for the moment. 198,

:51:37.:51:41.

that is the target. Really quick under the bar, standing

:51:42.:51:49.

straightaway. Maximum efficiency, drive to arms's length, big lift to

:51:50.:51:53.

the elbows, happy days, first attempt on the board and in the lead

:51:54.:52:02.

by a considerable way. 106 on the bar. This would only take her to 186

:52:03.:52:11.

in the lead of 198. Yelisseyeva of Kazakhstan.

:52:12.:52:17.

Oh, there go the needs. -- the knees. Oscillation on the bar, comes

:52:18.:52:27.

to a rest. Oh, no, failed left. You only get one attempt at the joke,

:52:28.:52:32.

she dipped, mistimed it. The referee said, no thank you. -- the jerk. She

:52:33.:52:44.

has one more attempt up her sleeve. This is where the cat and mouse game

:52:45.:52:48.

begins. Could she consider going straight back out there? I don't

:52:49.:52:57.

think so. For the simple reason that Mirabai has already failed her first

:52:58.:53:01.

attempt at 104, she gambled up to 106. You won't see her coming out

:53:02.:53:04.

now. Completely mistimed that. So Mirabai, she needs this left, she

:53:05.:53:24.

failed at 104, she is won up to 106. 82 in the snatch, but doesn't have a

:53:25.:53:26.

clean total yet. Oh, it is a big effort to stand. She

:53:27.:53:41.

needs to execute this attempt. Oh, she is under pressure. Two failures.

:53:42.:53:45.

It would have put her in the silver medal position at the moment. It

:53:46.:53:49.

would have done, this is where you can play really high stakes poker,

:53:50.:53:55.

I'm not sure this is going to payoff for her. One attempt to stay in the

:53:56.:53:57.

competition. Third attempt for Yelisseyeva. Also

:53:58.:54:11.

at 106. This will only put her into third place, if my correlations are

:54:12.:54:17.

correct. Yes, she had eating in the snatch. -- my calculations. Mirabai

:54:18.:54:23.

had 84. We haven't seen Christiana of Indonesia yet. She is still due

:54:24.:54:28.

to come out at 110. An attempt to close the gap on Tanasan, after

:54:29.:54:36.

being back 70 lows after the snatch. This for a total of 186, for the

:54:37.:54:42.

moment we are in the bronze battle positions or seven kilos.

:54:43.:54:47.

It's there! And her coaches are going crazy, shouting words of

:54:48.:55:06.

encouragement. About is her third and final lift. The moment, she has

:55:07.:55:11.

a couple of fingers on a bronze medal, but will it stand up? Only

:55:12.:55:15.

time will tell. You would think probably not. But a total of 186.

:55:16.:55:30.

She works hard to stand. It is just her way of lifting, I guess. It

:55:31.:55:37.

works for her. She drops the hips behind the bar as she dips, not the

:55:38.:55:42.

best technically. But she's budded overhead, that is all that matters.

:55:43.:55:46.

I think it was disappointing there. -- she stopped the bar overhead.

:55:47.:55:51.

Mirabai needs this to go into second place. That would push Yelisseyeva

:55:52.:55:59.

out of medal contention. More importantly, she needs this to make

:56:00.:56:05.

a total. She needs this to get a total at all, this is her last lift.

:56:06.:56:14.

106 on the bar. Can she get a total here in Rio?

:56:15.:56:26.

No, Mirabai is out of the competition. Yelisseyeva breathes a

:56:27.:56:29.

sigh of relief. Ever so slight grip on a bronze

:56:30.:56:40.

medal, but we still have a view to come. How does appointing. Two

:56:41.:56:46.

lifters we have seen have failed to make a total. -- how disappointing.

:56:47.:56:50.

When you train for so many years, so many hours spent in the gym working

:56:51.:56:55.

for this one moment, this magical moment and when it doesn't come off.

:56:56.:56:57.

You have to feel their pain. Augustyn Anna, the first time we

:56:58.:57:14.

have seen her. 85 kilos in the snatch. This at 100 and. --

:57:15.:57:21.

Agustiani. This is full silver position. -- for silver position.

:57:22.:57:33.

This for a total of 192. Has she got it? Yes, she has. Well, shake of the

:57:34.:57:45.

head as if to say, I'm made that harder than I needed to. But she is

:57:46.:57:50.

there now, she has put herself right back in contention. Yelisseyeva says

:57:51.:57:58.

-- sees her potential bronze medal slipped to fourth, out of medal

:57:59.:57:59.

contention now. OK, Miyake has 100 and on the bar.

:58:00.:58:25.

81 kilos for the snatch. -- 107% the bar. Oh, really buries her. Just

:58:26.:58:33.

find the legs to stand. Oh, they have failed her.

:58:34.:58:39.

OK, a couple of things that could have happened there. One is her

:58:40.:58:44.

bottom may have touched the platform. But I don't think so, but

:58:45.:58:48.

I am not in the best position to see, we are too high to be able to

:58:49.:58:53.

see that. Secondly, there may have been an adjustment, which means the

:58:54.:58:57.

bar caught low and moved up on her shoulders, I didn't see that. There

:58:58.:59:01.

may have been all boat at. We need a replay. What matters though is that

:59:02.:59:06.

she is now in fifth position -- there may have been an elbow touch.

:59:07.:59:16.

This is tough, this is really tough. We have just had the same happen

:59:17.:59:31.

again now. Miyake came off after 100s, worked very hard and used so

:59:32.:59:35.

much energy. Another lift has been called. They have gone up, and

:59:36.:59:40.

straight back to Miyake. What is ticking, 45 seconds. Look how much

:59:41.:59:45.

energy she wasted. Can we see an infringement here? It is on top of

:59:46.:59:49.

the shoulders. That is fine. Why have they failed that others might

:59:50.:59:55.

oh, come on. -- why have they failed that? But this is a bronze medal

:59:56.:00:04.

left. This is huge. -- bronze medal lift. She is under enormous

:00:05.:00:11.

pressure. And now to put herself in a bronze medal position -- 107th.

:00:12.:00:21.

That is absolutely fine, nothing wrong with the clean. She has got

:00:22.:00:30.

it! What a fighter! Absolutely incredible. Congratulations, Hiromi

:00:31.:00:37.

Miyake of Japan, you have just put yourself into the medals. A silver

:00:38.:00:44.

medal in London and she is now sitting in third position, here in

:00:45.:00:49.

Rio. Only two lifters to come. She will take home a bronze medal.

:00:50.:01:07.

So with only two lifters to come, and they were both already in front

:01:08.:01:23.

of her... What a great effort. Well, and extremely sensible competition

:01:24.:01:27.

being played by Sopita Tanasan now, only increasing by two kilos, just

:01:28.:01:34.

to keep her lead enough that hopefully Sri Wahyuni Agustiani is

:01:35.:01:41.

unable to catch up. Very sensible. Exit attempt at 108 kilos. This

:01:42.:01:51.

would take to 200 in total. It is there and it is comfortable, really

:01:52.:01:59.

good lifting. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE 15, we are going to see 115, I

:02:00.:02:05.

reckon, 115, I think is the weight that Agustiani needs to give herself

:02:06.:02:10.

a chance of the gold overall. She has already got the silver. She's

:02:11.:02:17.

got nothing to lose. Yes, the bronze is Hiromi Miyake's and at the

:02:18.:02:23.

moment, Tanasan, on screen right now, has her hands on the gold

:02:24.:02:27.

medal. Agustiani has to do something quite extraordinary. Welcome is she

:02:28.:02:35.

going to have a go? I think if I'm honest, we are going to see Tanasan

:02:36.:02:39.

come out for a final attempt before we see Agustiani going for it. Yes,

:02:40.:02:47.

in the picture now, Agustiani taking some water on board. Tanasan coming

:02:48.:02:58.

back out at 109. She has managed 115. Why wouldn't you want this on

:02:59.:03:03.

your own terms? She doesn't need it, she's only going to take a couple

:03:04.:03:07.

more kilos, 110 is being loaded now and she's only doing this to force

:03:08.:03:12.

Agustiani to await she has never done before. She has only done 113,

:03:13.:03:21.

she still needs 115. If Tanasan successful, 117. I know it is a

:03:22.:03:27.

weight she has never done before but the last lift will be in Agustiani's

:03:28.:03:32.

hands. It is all very tense, either way. It is.

:03:33.:03:43.

Tanasan at 110 kilos, at the moment, looking all over a gold medal but

:03:44.:03:49.

there will still be one lifter to come, having to lift an

:03:50.:03:50.

extraordinary weight. I don't think she needs this. But it

:03:51.:04:12.

would be very handy. Tanasan, her third attempt, 110 kilos. Maybe this

:04:13.:04:15.

is why she is only done a couple, this will stop. -- this was tough.

:04:16.:04:25.

She was pushed to her limits today. At least we know that much the

:04:26.:04:30.

shore. Will that be good enough? Will the current total be good

:04:31.:04:37.

enough? 115 is being loaded. To put it into perspective, the Olympic

:04:38.:04:50.

record is 117. Setback in Beijing. I thought we may get close but I did

:04:51.:04:55.

not think we would expect to see this lifter coming onto the stage,

:04:56.:05:01.

Agustiani. This is a huge weight for her. Not only is it a personal best

:05:02.:05:04.

by two kilos, this is it, a gold-medal lift. Is she nails this,

:05:05.:05:11.

she takes the gold medal. If it is too much, then she will need to be

:05:12.:05:21.

content with silver. The veteran, Hiromi Miyake, has taken the bronze

:05:22.:05:26.

already, and two 21-year-old is fighting out gold and silver.

:05:27.:05:32.

Tanasan can do no more. Agustiani of Indonesia, four foot ten, a pocket

:05:33.:05:41.

dynamo. 115 kilos on the bar. A massive personal best will stop will

:05:42.:05:49.

it be a gold-medal lift? -- best. Oh, no, it will not be. She was

:05:50.:05:54.

going for it though, she just mistimed it. She's going to have

:05:55.:05:59.

another attempt. She's got one more to go. Look at Tanasan, hanging on,

:06:00.:06:05.

what a horrible position to be in, well, a great position, sat in the

:06:06.:06:10.

gold medal position but it is out of our hands. Dear me, I've got goose

:06:11.:06:16.

bumps watching it. It is a bit like a golfer safely in the clubhouse

:06:17.:06:19.

waiting for someone to hole the final putt from a long way. I kind

:06:20.:06:26.

of hope you have a camera on the warm up room at the same time, as we

:06:27.:06:32.

watch Agustiani's third attempt. Does she have the legs? One more to

:06:33.:06:38.

go. Will it be gold? Will it be silver?

:06:39.:06:55.

Look at the tension on these two, as we said, Tanasan can do no more.

:06:56.:07:04.

Holding on and hoping. She only did 106, Agustiani, back in the Asian

:07:05.:07:08.

championships a couple of months ago. This is huge. Yes, this is nine

:07:09.:07:14.

kilos more, that is a massive amount of weight. But they don't hand out

:07:15.:07:22.

gold medals to athletes who don't have a crack. She is certainly

:07:23.:07:32.

having a massive dig, here. Agustiani, two 21-year-olds fighting

:07:33.:07:35.

it out for gold. This is the final list of the competition. -- lift.

:07:36.:07:45.

Come on, now, come on. Can't do it. Wow, what an effort. You have to

:07:46.:07:49.

give her credit. She gave it everything. There is our gold

:07:50.:07:55.

medallist. 21 years old, Tanasan, wow. Gold and silver going to

:07:56.:08:02.

21-year-olds. It is a terrific performance, a real changing of the

:08:03.:08:05.

guard, the 30-year-old takes bronze, who was a silver medallist in

:08:06.:08:11.

London. That is Hiromi Miyake. Wonderful competition. And she knew.

:08:12.:08:20.

But you've got to have a go, haven't you? So close to standing, as well.

:08:21.:08:26.

What a competition. Great to see that it was a fight right to the

:08:27.:08:30.

end. I was worried Tanasan was going to run away with it. Brilliant. When

:08:31.:08:40.

she came out for that 106, you thought... What is she doing? We

:08:41.:08:45.

thought she had more but it turns out she didn't. And you can see how

:08:46.:08:51.

much it means to have. And you open your career as a 21-year-old with a

:08:52.:08:55.

gold at the Olympic Games. Who knows where it will finish? Oh, yeah, no

:08:56.:09:02.

words. This is the first time she has been down to 48. Identity and we

:09:03.:09:07.

will see her at 48 too often. She will probably do the majority of

:09:08.:09:11.

competition that 53 and if this is where she excels, then we may see

:09:12.:09:15.

her drop down for the next Games but she does not need to prove herself

:09:16.:09:19.

every year at this body weight. Brilliant lifting. Although to

:09:20.:09:24.

maintain that kind of body weight that is natural to you is an

:09:25.:09:28.

enormous effort, as you say, doing it every couple of years, if you can

:09:29.:09:32.

maintain 53, it is a little easier, I suppose, but still, a massive

:09:33.:09:36.

effort to get to hear. Isn't that terrific? A prayer.

:09:37.:09:47.

And there's the bronze medallist. One happy team and you know what?

:09:48.:09:54.

I'm not sure how she managed to pull it out of the bag. When you think

:09:55.:09:58.

about the struggle she had in the snatch as well. Missed the first do

:09:59.:10:03.

and how she held a third, no idea. Looked like she would be out of the

:10:04.:10:09.

competition. A true fighter. An impressive performance from

:10:10.:10:14.

Tanasan Thailand, leading after the snatch and winning the gold medal in

:10:15.:10:17.

the women's 48 kilograms category weightlifting. That is the first

:10:18.:10:21.

show of weightlifting on BBC Four but plenty more to come if you are a

:10:22.:10:25.

big weightlifting fan. It has been a bit of a brutal day today, a few

:10:26.:10:29.

broken bones. You might have seen earlier, a French gymnast breaking

:10:30.:10:33.

his leg in the vault which was pretty gruesome, so much so that we

:10:34.:10:37.

can't show it to you again, a broken collarbone in the road race, Geraint

:10:38.:10:39.

Thomas as well, who had a chance of a medal, crashing on the final

:10:40.:10:45.

descent, no broken bones, got back on the bike but a big crash for Team

:10:46.:10:49.

GB, who did not win any of the medals in the road race, despite big

:10:50.:10:52.

hopes for not only Thomas but also Chris Froome, who will go again in

:10:53.:10:57.

four days in the time trial. But aside from all of that, these are

:10:58.:11:02.

some of the headlines on day one of the XXXI Olympic Games. Good news

:11:03.:11:10.

for Team GB in the pool, Adam Peaty broke his own world record and is

:11:11.:11:13.

into the semifinal of the men's 100 metres breaststroke. That is an act

:11:14.:11:22.

38 -- at 3am on BBC One. Joe Cordina start his first Olympics with a win

:11:23.:11:25.

in the lightweight boxing and is into the second round. And in the

:11:26.:11:34.

heavyweights, also good for Team GB, Lawrence Okolie, who really

:11:35.:11:37.

impressed as he also made it through into the second round. We told you

:11:38.:11:43.

about the Team GB disappointment in the men's road race, but Greg van

:11:44.:11:47.

Avermaet Belgium was the man who came away with the gold and was

:11:48.:11:53.

delighted with it, understandably. But the first gold medal of the day

:11:54.:11:57.

actually went to a 19-year-old American, brilliant name as well,

:11:58.:12:01.

Ginny Thrasher, in the ten metres air rifle. Let's show you exactly

:12:02.:12:08.

what is happening around Rio at the moment. Plenty of live sport still

:12:09.:12:15.

taking place. Over on BBC One at the moment, well, BBC One is showing the

:12:16.:12:19.

hockey but on the Red Button, you can see some handball. I watched

:12:20.:12:23.

Brazil take on Norway earlier. It is fascinating. If you fancy a frenetic

:12:24.:12:27.

sport that takes you right to the edge of your seat, I can highly

:12:28.:12:31.

recommend it. And if you want to get involved in a bit of handball, get

:12:32.:12:36.

involved on the website and find the nearest club to you. Venus Williams

:12:37.:12:39.

is on Centre Court in the tennis, also available on the Red Button. We

:12:40.:12:43.

saw Heather Watson making it to the second round earlier. She took three

:12:44.:12:47.

sets to do it and we had some table tennis earlier on BBC Four, Paul

:12:48.:12:52.

Drinkhall making the second round and the table tennis continues at

:12:53.:13:00.

the Riocentro pavilion three. Thank you for all of the texts and tweets

:13:01.:13:03.

you have been sending through this evening. Apparently there's a lot of

:13:04.:13:07.

love for our fishermen, Francisco, and the ten fish he found early on

:13:08.:13:12.

the beach. Sadly, he's gone home now but there is still a little bit of

:13:13.:13:15.

activity on Copacabana. One of the other things we will try to do in

:13:16.:13:18.

the course of the next few weeks is we want you to send through your

:13:19.:13:21.

candidates for those stories we might have missed out, those global

:13:22.:13:24.

stories that really embody what the Olympics is all about. We're going

:13:25.:13:28.

to put them in bronze, silver and gold medal position at about this

:13:29.:13:31.

time every evening and we are calling it our #RioTrio. Here is

:13:32.:13:40.

today's offering, starting with the soggy Serbians in bronze, the men's

:13:41.:13:47.

pair overturned on the lake as the waves swelled in rather brutal

:13:48.:13:50.

winds, and they said afterwards it was more like surfing.

:13:51.:14:19.

Refugee swimmer, Mardini fled last summer and today she won the 100

:14:20.:14:33.

metres butterfly heat. Do you know what we're going to do, that didn't

:14:34.:14:36.

work because there was a technical issue so we're going to rerun the

:14:37.:14:41.

#RioTrio. I can't see the pictures and hopefully you can see them at

:14:42.:14:43.

home but here we go, once again, send in your suggestions in the

:14:44.:14:47.

cause of the next few weeks and pretend the last 90 seconds never

:14:48.:14:48.

happened. This is the #RioTrio! We will start with the soggy

:14:49.:14:59.

Serbians, the men's pair overturned on the lake as the waves swelled in

:15:00.:15:04.

brutal winds and they said afterwards it was more like surfing.

:15:05.:15:11.

There was joy for Vietnam as they took their first-ever goal at the

:15:12.:15:18.

Games with the final shot of the men's ten metres air pistol. They

:15:19.:15:26.

had previously won two medals, both silver, in the Olympics. You heard

:15:27.:15:30.

part of this because without doubt the most uplifting story of the day

:15:31.:15:36.

so far, refugee swimmer, Yusra Mardini fled her home in Syria last

:15:37.:15:40.

and today won the 100 metres butterfly heat, her time was only

:15:41.:15:43.

good for 41st overall so she did not progress to the semifinals but she

:15:44.:15:47.

still takes gold in today's #RioTrio.

:15:48.:15:53.

So good, we showed it to you twice. Now, a number of people have been

:15:54.:16:00.

saying, when are you going to show us some beach volleyball? It is on

:16:01.:16:06.

the way, fear not. But before that, the beach volleyball is a 20 minute

:16:07.:16:10.

walk down there. Here is the BBC guide to beach volleyball.

:16:11.:16:20.

Beach volleyball made its Olympic debut in Atlanta in 1996, and in the

:16:21.:16:27.

20 years since, the United States of Brazil have dominated the sport.

:16:28.:16:30.

Matches take place outdoors on a sand caught 16 metres long and eight

:16:31.:16:35.

metres wide. There are only two members of the beach volleyball team

:16:36.:16:38.

and substitutions are not allowed. The object of the game is to hit the

:16:39.:16:43.

ball over the net, trying to land it in the opponent's side of the court.

:16:44.:16:44.

To keep the ball in play, a tin can hit it up to three times on their

:16:45.:17:03.

side of the court before it must be returned. Every point lead in beach

:17:04.:17:05.

volleyball scores one point, and matches are the best of 3 cents. The

:17:06.:17:08.

first two sets are played to 21 points, but if a third is required,

:17:09.:17:11.

the winner of this set is the first team to reach 15. However, a team

:17:12.:17:14.

must always win a set by at least two points. There are many different

:17:15.:17:16.

shots in beach volleyball. Different pass is a shot using the forearms

:17:17.:17:19.

with hands together to direct the ball. It is used to set the ball for

:17:20.:17:22.

another player to play an attacking shot. They did is when the ball is

:17:23.:17:25.

saved with any part of the body, but normally using the arms and hands. A

:17:26.:17:28.

spike is where a player jumps and strikes the ball with one hand as an

:17:29.:17:34.

attacking hit. A dink is played just over the net or block a's hand

:17:35.:17:38.

instead of spiking. It is legal as long as the player does it with

:17:39.:17:40.

closed fingers. The preliminary phase sees teams compete in pools,

:17:41.:17:43.

with the top teams from each pool advancing to the knockout phases in

:17:44.:17:48.

their quest for Olympic medals. So now you know exactly how it

:17:49.:17:55.

works. Four years ago in London 2012, the beach volleyball was at

:17:56.:17:59.

Horse Guards Parade. Now it is that Copacabana beach and Mark is one of

:18:00.:18:03.

those who has got in contact on Twitter using the hashtag

:18:04.:18:08.

#bbcrio2016. He said, when on earth, Walker, are you going to show some

:18:09.:18:12.

beach volleyball? I have been staying awake specifically for it.

:18:13.:18:15.

We promised we would show you some. I am not sure this is what you had

:18:16.:18:20.

in mind. This is the German men against the Polish men. The Poles

:18:21.:18:28.

managed to win the first set. There is a beautiful shot of the Beach

:18:29.:18:32.

Volleyball Arena. And we join the second set live. Our commentator and

:18:33.:18:41.

that arena, prepare yourself for whooping and wailing, here is

:18:42.:18:42.

Clayton Lucas. COMMENTATOR: Said Germany will be

:18:43.:18:55.

looking at this as just a blip. And they will be looking to come back

:18:56.:19:04.

in. He looked like he was going to go to the crosscourt. Casually

:19:05.:19:10.

rolled it to the line. The first lead for Germany.

:19:11.:19:40.

Every opportunity they get, they like to go quick, Poland. Just

:19:41.:19:47.

piling on the pressure to Germany. Poland find a solution, and they

:19:48.:20:40.

have the lead at the first end change. Great view of the Centre

:20:41.:20:50.

Court as we panel in. It is a fascinating encounter. Although

:20:51.:20:55.

Poland are bossing it, Germany still have the ability to get back into

:20:56.:20:58.

this one. They just have to believe they can do it. They are certainly

:20:59.:21:03.

making a better fist of it in this second set, match in Poland point

:21:04.:21:07.

for point. Poland are helping them to a certain degree. A couple of

:21:08.:21:10.

missed serves from them already. This game really is a battle of the

:21:11.:21:15.

mind. Physically, these two teams are an ideal match. Very little

:21:16.:21:20.

between them. But mentally right now, Poland have the edge.

:21:21.:21:43.

That is a very nice play from Bockermann. Just cutting that ball

:21:44.:21:52.

towards the sideline. Really good pick-up by Fluggen as well, to not

:21:53.:21:58.

only get it in the air, but stay out of the net. Something for Germany to

:21:59.:22:06.

build on now they have levelled the scores up. A little bit of belief

:22:07.:22:09.

creeping into their game, perhaps. Fluggen Kodaline, and unfortunately

:22:10.:23:04.

Bockermann did not heed the advice. He is denied by combination of the

:23:05.:23:11.

net -- Fluggen called the line. As Poland get themselves a 3-point

:23:12.:23:13.

lead, Germany have called time-out. Germany are less than 50% efficient

:23:14.:24:23.

with their attacking at the moment. They are showing moments of

:24:24.:24:26.

brilliance, and they are showing us exactly why they are here at this

:24:27.:24:31.

Olympic Games. All the hard work they have put in over the last year

:24:32.:24:37.

and a half in qualifying. But it's funny how situations can affect you.

:24:38.:24:44.

And right now, the situation here has got to Germany. When they

:24:45.:24:48.

started to lose points, they have struggled to get them back. They

:24:49.:24:51.

have got back into this one, and they are coming back again. They

:24:52.:24:56.

just have to keep that consistency and momentum and put some pressure

:24:57.:25:04.

back on to Poland. Nice pick-up by Fluggen. So important on the beach

:25:05.:25:10.

that you get a full arm swing up and into the air and extend it high up

:25:11.:25:13.

into the air like Fluggen has done. Bockermann got the height of the net

:25:14.:25:35.

with his block, but couldn't get his hands sufficiently across the net.

:25:36.:25:48.

Kantor with the serve. That was an opportunity. Even though it wasn't

:25:49.:25:55.

the best of passes, Fluggen was trying to play that over. He misses

:25:56.:25:59.

on the sideline and you can see how he felt about it with his reaction.

:26:00.:26:08.

Easy to say this, but Germany are struggling to relax into this. That

:26:09.:26:16.

is a wonderful block from Kantor to deny him.

:26:17.:26:31.

Poland are unable to build on that last point. Kantor gifted Germany a

:26:32.:26:52.

point. Bockermann with the serve. That could have gone either way. It

:26:53.:26:56.

could just as easily have dribbled over the net as it stayed on his own

:26:57.:27:10.

side to give the Poland the point. Again, Bockermann was not able to

:27:11.:27:14.

deal with the serve but he gets the side out. That is the mark of a good

:27:15.:27:18.

team. Under pressure from the serve, but as you play, you get that chance

:27:19.:27:24.

to get the side out as we hit the technical time-out. Poland are

:27:25.:27:28.

leading 12-9. You just know that things are going

:27:29.:28:38.

right for Poland when they have the audacity to dink the ball quickly

:28:39.:28:44.

and have a hurry up a fence on the back of a poor pass.

:28:45.:28:58.

Bockermann find a way through, but it is Germany who have to find a way

:28:59.:29:04.

back into this game, one point at a time. Bockermann was not obstructed

:29:05.:29:17.

as he went for that. What can he do from the service line?

:29:18.:29:37.

In the scheme of things, five faults each counts as an out, but it is

:29:38.:29:43.

when you make them. That is the big issue. You could go an entire set

:29:44.:29:49.

and not make an error, but if you are one point down and then serve

:29:50.:29:52.

into the net, that are accounts massively against you as you lose

:29:53.:29:57.

the set. But this right now is a must win set for Germany as Fluggen

:29:58.:30:05.

puts that one in. And a bit of luck for Germany. They will take it.

:30:06.:30:11.

There has to come a point in a situation like this and I think it

:30:12.:30:16.

might just happen for Germany when you think not much more could go

:30:17.:30:20.

wrong and now things are starting to go their way. Line block signalled,

:30:21.:30:29.

so Bockermann will try to take the line out at the net. Fluggen will

:30:30.:30:39.

sit crosscourt. Nice block out from Poland. Hi, hard rap into the block.

:30:40.:30:50.

-- high. Excellent play. Despite the fact

:30:51.:31:02.

that Germany again under pressure from server received but Fluggen

:31:03.:31:07.

scurrying to get the ball in play and put it in a position where

:31:08.:31:12.

Bockermann had options. He took the right one in putting it away

:31:13.:31:18.

crosscourt. Germany just two behind. A couple of good service can change

:31:19.:31:22.

the game and that is just what they didn't need. -- good serves.

:31:23.:31:55.

Nothing you can do but stand and stare and admire. Great role shot.

:31:56.:32:16.

Well, they look rather nonplussed by the whole thing at the moment, don't

:32:17.:32:30.

they, Poland? They are pretty cool, calm and collected, very much in the

:32:31.:32:34.

zone. Very much looking to try to get this one done in two sets.

:32:35.:32:43.

Excellent blocking from Kantor. Just held his ground and waited and then

:32:44.:32:48.

pounced. Fluggen, trying to roll this one over the top but did not

:32:49.:32:52.

get enough height and Kantor's hang time denying Fluggen.

:32:53.:33:11.

That time, Kantor just waited but waited a tad too long. Fluggen

:33:12.:33:17.

hammers it away but Germany desperately need points. It is

:33:18.:33:24.

Bockermann who will go back to serve, a weaker rotation for Germany

:33:25.:33:30.

because Bockermann is the blocker so he has to serve and then go running

:33:31.:33:33.

to the net which gives Poland an opportunity to go over on their

:33:34.:33:36.

second attack if it is not a tough enough serve. It is certainly a

:33:37.:33:41.

tough enough serve and free ball for Germany. Oh, nice play from Fluggen!

:33:42.:33:53.

Did not panic. Had the wherewithal to know he could have cut that one

:33:54.:33:57.

away. He knew exactly where Poland were in the scheme of things. No one

:33:58.:34:01.

at the net to block and nobody available crosscourt. Very nicely

:34:02.:34:04.

done. And its Poland who called a

:34:05.:34:15.

time-out. Now that is probably the best view.

:34:16.:34:46.

Although perhaps just a tad far away. Those of you who are new to

:34:47.:34:54.

volleyball and thinking about coming and watching all going to watch a

:34:55.:34:58.

game, definitely do that and if you get the opportunity, at least try

:34:59.:35:02.

and watch a set from end on so you can see how the game develops and

:35:03.:35:06.

you can see how the ball moves from the servers well, especially

:35:07.:35:10.

outdoors. You really appreciate the skill level of these players. The

:35:11.:35:16.

net is two metres 43 in height, eight feet, the same height as the

:35:17.:35:20.

crossbar in football. These guys are getting head and shoulders above it

:35:21.:35:24.

on the sand. It is very, very impressive.

:35:25.:35:34.

Poland still in the driving seat, now find themselves just two points

:35:35.:35:41.

away from wrapping this one up. Losiak with the serve.

:35:42.:35:48.

They are going to go after Kantor, looking for a crosscourt block.

:35:49.:36:08.

Bockermann signalling exactly where he wanted the ball to be served to.

:36:09.:36:12.

A good big from Fluggen, still in play. They have got the block out!

:36:13.:36:19.

-- a good dig. They have got themselves back to within a point.

:36:20.:36:27.

Well, it was a great call from Bockermann, saying, "I want you to

:36:28.:36:31.

go after Kantor, I'm going to take him out crosscourt". They make the

:36:32.:36:37.

dig, Bockermann keeps it in play and Fluggen gets it off the hands and

:36:38.:36:38.

away. Can they do it again? No such luck for Germany. Kantor

:36:39.:36:58.

comes up with the roll shot, and now Poland have match point.

:36:59.:37:12.

Bockermann, to keep Germany in it. And he has done. Losiak had a look.

:37:13.:37:21.

He could have perhaps kept it in play but he didn't back himself to

:37:22.:37:25.

go after it. And the first match is saved. And this now is the best

:37:26.:37:31.

opportunity that Poland will get, their only chance to get this done

:37:32.:37:35.

in regulation. If Germany take the point and we go to 20-20, it is the

:37:36.:37:39.

first to get two cleared to wrap this up or take the set. Not the

:37:40.:37:45.

best of passes. It is an unforced error from Poland. Losiak shot it

:37:46.:37:50.

long and Germany have levelled! Would you believe it? Poland have

:37:51.:37:57.

looked rock-solid all the way up to this point. They had a swing for the

:37:58.:38:03.

match. It has not been taken. Now it is the first to get two clear, will

:38:04.:38:07.

either take the set if it is Germany or the match if it is Poland. Well,

:38:08.:38:12.

that is not quite what Germany were looking for. So, Poland have another

:38:13.:38:18.

match point. But they have got a more difficult scenario here because

:38:19.:38:20.

they can only win this match now from service. They don't have the

:38:21.:38:24.

luxury of being able to side out to get the job done.

:38:25.:38:32.

Brilliance swing from Fluggen! Too much heat for Losiak to handle and

:38:33.:38:39.

we are level once again. Brilliant play from Fluggen. Gave it

:38:40.:38:57.

everything. And got the point. Oh, dear me! Twice now in a row,

:38:58.:39:05.

Germany, with a gift for Poland. It is almost as if they don't want to

:39:06.:39:12.

win this. Another match point. Kantor with the serve. Bockermann to

:39:13.:39:19.

keep them in it but Fluggen goes over on two. And it lands in on the

:39:20.:39:27.

baseline and Poland have done it! They take the set and the match in

:39:28.:39:34.

two sets. A fascinating end to this one. It looked for a minute as

:39:35.:39:37.

though Germany were going to get themselves back into it.

:39:38.:39:41.

Confirmation of the score, 21-11, 20 3-21. Poland have the opening

:39:42.:39:49.

victory over Bockermann and Fluggen. -- 23-21.

:39:50.:39:55.

It was a long, hard look from Kantor, and then checks with the

:39:56.:40:00.

first referee but it had caught the baseline. Well, all smiles now for

:40:01.:40:07.

Poland. Whack to the drawing board for Germany. They were completely

:40:08.:40:12.

outplayed in the first set. They got back into it in the second but

:40:13.:40:15.

perhaps left it just a little too late. They could not engineer a set

:40:16.:40:17.

point of their own. A reminder of the match statistics.

:40:18.:40:30.

They have gone! That was a quick reminder. We will bring you beach

:40:31.:40:34.

volleyball at around about this time for the next few nights on BBC Four

:40:35.:40:40.

because lots of people are enjoying it and it is only down there so we

:40:41.:40:43.

can get to it very easily. Let's give you a reminder of what else you

:40:44.:40:47.

can watch across the BBC at the moment. On BBC One, there is quite

:40:48.:40:51.

the game between Team GB and the Australian hockey team because, this

:40:52.:40:57.

is quite significant, the Aussies are ranked third in the world, Team

:40:58.:41:01.

GB is ranked seventh in the world and they won the bronze medal back

:41:02.:41:06.

in 2012, and they currently lead, I think it is 2-1. Hopefully someone

:41:07.:41:12.

can update me if it is now 31 -- 3-1. Great Britain are leading 2-1.

:41:13.:41:18.

Yes, that was a replay of the second. It is live on BBC One at the

:41:19.:41:23.

moment. The Red Button, a bit of table tennis for you, we showed you

:41:24.:41:26.

Paul Drinkhall earlier, making it safely through to the second round

:41:27.:41:30.

and the table tennis continues on the Red Button. Plenty more sport on

:41:31.:41:35.

bearers well. If you want highlights, want to look back at

:41:36.:41:38.

some of the big things that have happened today, interviews, lots of

:41:39.:41:42.

stuff available on the BBC Sport website and highlights on radio five

:41:43.:41:46.

live as well and you can listen to the podcast, some of their big bits

:41:47.:41:49.

that have happened today as well. We are going to finish our coverage

:41:50.:41:53.

denied by showing you some top quality tennis. We told you earlier

:41:54.:41:57.

that Venus Williams is playing on Centre Court against Kirsten

:41:58.:42:00.

Flipkens of Belgium. Now Venus Williams, this would be an amazing

:42:01.:42:04.

story if she was to win Olympic gold. Serena Williams, her sister,

:42:05.:42:07.

the reigning champion, is the favourite to win the title but Venus

:42:08.:42:12.

actually won Olympic gold in Sydney, 16 years ago. She is undergoing

:42:13.:42:16.

something of a renaissance. She is back in the world's top ten and she

:42:17.:42:19.

comes here with real hope of doing something that would be a little bit

:42:20.:42:24.

special. So it is 1-1 at the moment in her match against Flipkens and

:42:25.:42:28.

Venus Williams is a break-up in the third and deciding set. She's

:42:29.:42:32.

leading 4-2, serving and we will join our commentator from centre

:42:33.:42:36.

court in the tennis, about ten miles away from Copacabana, let's go and

:42:37.:42:37.

listen in. COMMENTATOR: Venus knows she has

:42:38.:42:59.

really got to go after those shots. As to get some pace on them. But be

:43:00.:43:07.

patient at the same time. It is a fine line to walk.

:43:08.:44:10.

A few subtle momentum shifts throughout this set, throughout the

:44:11.:44:49.

entire match. Venus, playing those last two points

:44:50.:44:57.

with authority and composure. Well, she did everything right, set

:44:58.:46:03.

things up beautifully. But makes a mistake on that last forehand.

:46:04.:46:18.

Heartbreaking for her. A chance right here for Flipkens to break

:46:19.:46:22.

back. Flipkens gets the break back,

:46:23.:47:30.

narrows the margin. Right, we are going to join the

:47:31.:47:52.

tennis live now. Flipkens got it back to 4-3. Venous than broke her

:47:53.:47:59.

back out 5-3, so she is now serving once again for a place in the second

:48:00.:48:02.

round. Let's rejoin the tennis at Centre Court.

:48:03.:48:11.

Flipkens at 4-5, serving to stay in it.

:48:12.:48:55.

Full stretch. Williams couldn't control the volley. And Flipkens

:48:56.:49:09.

doing an extraordinary job in moving Williams around the court, keeping

:49:10.:49:11.

her out of her comfort zone. Well, it keeps working for her, so

:49:12.:50:04.

she's going to keep doing it. Got to be confident to play that sort of

:50:05.:50:09.

shot, and she has played it continually throughout this match.

:50:10.:50:14.

It is one thing to have a strategy, but she has been able to carry it

:50:15.:50:16.

out. Superb fighting qualities from

:50:17.:51:36.

Flipkens. Levelling the decider. Well, the call was coming from the

:51:37.:52:39.

chair. The challenge from Venus. Oh, dear. Looking a bit wobbly on

:52:40.:53:46.

serve. Even on the first point, taking a long time to get the toss

:53:47.:53:58.

right, dropping the ball. Got that one right. Very tense times out

:53:59.:54:07.

here. That was the plan, the short ball.

:54:08.:54:54.

Bring Venus in, get the lob up, get her off balance. And it worked for

:54:55.:54:58.

Flipkens on that occasion, as it has so often throughout this match. Two

:54:59.:55:00.

break points for the Belgian. Brilliant play from Flipkens. How's

:55:01.:55:50.

that ball on a string again. -- she has that ball on a string. After

:55:51.:55:58.

three hours, Flipkens leads 6-5 in the third set, on the brink of a

:55:59.:56:03.

major upset here. Well, that was just a few moments

:56:04.:56:20.

ago. We are going to join it live now, because Flipkens, who was

:56:21.:56:25.

serving for the win actually lost her service game, so after three

:56:26.:56:29.

hours of tennis, we are now going into a final set tie-break to decide

:56:30.:56:38.

who goes through. We have been out here for a touch

:56:39.:56:43.

over three hours. Now it will all come down to a tie-break. Who can

:56:44.:56:47.

produce the goods here? That was a superb slice from

:56:48.:57:58.

Flipkens. Such a wonderful combination.

:57:59.:58:11.

Full stretch. Tremendous athlete, great move around the court. --

:58:12.:58:39.

great mover. Again, the short ball foiling

:58:40.:59:09.

Williams. Can't get over the shot, has to get under it. It's created

:59:10.:59:13.

all sorts of difficulties for her at times tonight.

:59:14.:59:39.

It was predictable, but still, Venus couldn't do anything about it.

:59:40.:59:48.

Flipkens has played that strategy to perfection. Created uncertainty.

:59:49.:00:32.

It's in. It's been called out. So close, relief for Venus. As long as

:00:33.:00:53.

they changed ends in this tie-break, it's Flipkens with a 4-2 lead.

:00:54.:02:03.

Flipkens just making things so tough for Williams, sending it high to

:02:04.:02:11.

that backhand side again, one of the toughest shots in the game to hit.

:02:12.:02:16.

Especially in a pressured situation like this.

:02:17.:02:36.

A shriek of desperation from Williams, as she landed that first

:02:37.:03:16.

serve, she needed that one. Tight forehand from the Belgian. And

:03:17.:04:13.

we are all level, 1-1, 6-6, 5-5 in the tie-break.

:04:14.:04:26.

UMPIRE: Ms Williams is challenging the call on the left-hand baseline.

:04:27.:04:29.

The ball was called out. 6-5. Flipkens. Pressure serve from

:04:30.:04:42.

Flipkens. Match point for the Belgian. Please.

:04:43.:04:57.

Thank you. Kirsten Flipkens, an emotional

:04:58.:05:47.

victory for her, coming through and epic first round battle against the

:05:48.:05:52.

sentimental favourite out here, Venus Williams.

:05:53.:06:04.

What a way to finish our coverage on BBC Four on day one of the Olympics,

:06:05.:06:10.

an incredible with the Kirsten Flipkens, knocking out Venus

:06:11.:06:13.

Williams, Olympic champion of 16 years ago, a great day for Belgium

:06:14.:06:17.

as well, winning the road race earlier and Kirsten Flipkens has

:06:18.:06:20.

made it through, only to the second round but a remarkable win, well

:06:21.:06:23.

over three hours of tennis on Centre Court and Flipkens has got the

:06:24.:06:27.

better of Venus Williams. It is still Serena Williams who is

:06:28.:06:33.

favourite to win the title and retain the gold medal. That is what

:06:34.:06:36.

the Olympics means to Kirsten Flipkens. Well, thank you if you

:06:37.:06:44.

have been with us for some or all of the evening tonight on BBC Four, I

:06:45.:06:48.

know it is well past 2am back home. It is 10p a month beach. Ore Oduba

:06:49.:06:55.

is going to be back on BBC tomorrow and I will be back on Monday because

:06:56.:06:59.

we are still in the middle of the action in Rio. On BBC One right now,

:07:00.:07:03.

Jason Mohammad will continue to show you the best of the action from the

:07:04.:07:07.

first day of the Olympic Games, including Adam Peaty and Ross

:07:08.:07:11.

Murdoch in the semifinal of the men's 100 metres breast stroke. That

:07:12.:07:15.

is in about an hour's time on BBC One. But at the end of the first on

:07:16.:07:20.

BBC Four, we have clocked it up, managed to show you ten different

:07:21.:07:24.

sports in the first day and some live fishing. I know it is

:07:25.:07:27.

technically not an Olympic event but we had live finish -- live fishing

:07:28.:07:31.

in ten sports so I think we have done quite well. We should leave you

:07:32.:07:35.

from the Team GB perspective with perhaps the image of the day, a

:07:36.:07:38.

world record from his first time in a pool in Rio, a world record for

:07:39.:07:42.

Great Britain's Adam Peaty. Goodbye.

:07:43.:07:45.
