Welcome back the Olympic Park here one. With brilliant timing, there is | :00:52. | :00:58.
a man on the loudspeaker shouting over your shoulder. Will he be here | :00:59. | :01:04.
all night? I expect so. We are here with a combination of highlights and | :01:05. | :01:09.
live-action. It is packed Olympic Park. An amazing Olympic Park. It | :01:10. | :01:15.
has been very quiet in the last couple of days. Even before the | :01:16. | :01:20.
opening ceremony, it was very quiet. This is the first time it has been | :01:21. | :01:25.
bustling. And they are all still streaming in because the swimming | :01:26. | :01:29.
finals start very late here. They start at eight o'clock Brazil time, | :01:30. | :01:34.
or even later, maybe ten o'clock. For people back home, you are | :01:35. | :01:38.
looking at two or three in the morning. We also have a late | :01:39. | :01:41.
sessions of tennis behind us, and there is coverage of that on one of | :01:42. | :01:46.
the 24 outlets showing the Olympics. We have the velodrome just over | :01:47. | :01:52.
here. That is rather beautiful. And we have the three big Carioca 's | :01:53. | :01:58.
that have sensing, taekwondo, basketball, wrestling and all sorts. | :01:59. | :02:04.
In the next few weeks, I will be just be trotting around, following | :02:05. | :02:10.
Clare. What would you award me? 30. Coming up this evening, this is what | :02:11. | :02:18.
we have got for you. We will be taking you into the pool to catch up | :02:19. | :02:24.
with the early sessions. Our world champion, Adam Peaty, was in action. | :02:25. | :02:28.
So was Hannah Miley at her third Olympics, try to win a medal for the | :02:29. | :02:35.
first time. Gymnastics was one of the highlights four years ago. Max | :02:36. | :02:41.
Whitlock leads Team GB here in Rio 2016. They are looking for two | :02:42. | :02:45.
medals and individual medals as well. Louis Smith is part of that | :02:46. | :02:51.
team as well. We have three British boxers in action today. We will | :02:52. | :02:58.
catch up with all of them. And Katherine Grainger was amongst | :02:59. | :03:05.
our rowers in action in the rowing. However, the conditions were | :03:06. | :03:09.
horrendous and as you see, a couple of the Serbians fell out of the | :03:10. | :03:14.
boat. We will talk to James Cracknell later. As I say, the wind | :03:15. | :03:18.
caused all sorts of problems for the competitors. One of the first medals | :03:19. | :03:25.
but Team GB could have won... Thank you very much! Go, Brazil! Back to | :03:26. | :03:32.
Team GB. There will be a lot of that over the coming two weeks. One of | :03:33. | :03:36.
the first medals Team GB could have won was in the men's road race. | :03:37. | :03:40.
These medals are handed out individually, but you need to work | :03:41. | :03:44.
as a team if you're going to deliver one of your riders over the line for | :03:45. | :03:48.
glory. Chris Froome was part of Team GB. He was hoping to add an Olympic | :03:49. | :03:52.
medal to the Tour de France yellow jersey. It was a dramatic race that | :03:53. | :03:55.
took place in sweltering conditions. COMMENTATOR: There is Chris Froome, | :03:56. | :04:16.
the winner of the Tour de France, alongside his British team-mates. | :04:17. | :04:22.
Fabio Aru and Vincenzo Nibali are the big riders from Italy. Nibali is | :04:23. | :04:26.
the favourite. And the men's road race at the Rio Olympic Games is | :04:27. | :04:33.
under way. The British riders are at the front of the peloton, alongside | :04:34. | :04:39.
some of the other favourites. Here it is, the racing is a last under | :04:40. | :05:00.
way we have six riders here. Time to start riding at least a bit of tempo | :05:01. | :05:07.
here. The breakaway six are heading into the circuit. This is the | :05:08. | :05:15.
cobbled section. Vincenzo Nibali, in the white jersey. One rider down. It | :05:16. | :05:26.
is about the tactical ability of individuals. It is not about how | :05:27. | :05:29.
much money you have got to buy a fantastic team, let them do the work | :05:30. | :05:36.
and carry one rider to the line. The leading riders have a healthy margin | :05:37. | :05:45.
at the moment. One technical side is that these are custom skin suits, | :05:46. | :05:54.
custom fitted. We are back on the cobbles now. Someone has crashed. | :05:55. | :06:02.
The group has whittled down. We haven't got to the really tough part | :06:03. | :06:09.
of the race. The lead hasn't changed in 20 minutes. We are 137 kilometres | :06:10. | :06:23.
into this race now, just over 100 to go. Chris Froome stops other side of | :06:24. | :06:30.
the road. -- at the side of the road. Cummings has dropped right | :06:31. | :06:40.
off. Disappointing. Everybody is happy to drive the pace here. | :06:41. | :06:46.
Gradkowski continues to push on. A lot can still unfold between now and | :06:47. | :06:54.
the finishing line -- Kwiatkowski. Sergio Henao surges to the front of | :06:55. | :07:00.
the race. Adam Yates, you can see the green helmet as he goes past | :07:01. | :07:03.
Geraint Thomas. What a position for Great Britain to be in and for the | :07:04. | :07:10.
Italians to be in. Zeits is now in acceleration, the Kazakh. A great | :07:11. | :07:16.
ride here by Geraint Thomas, lung busting effort. His legs must be | :07:17. | :07:22.
screaming at this point, but Geraint Thomas is hanging in there. This is | :07:23. | :07:28.
Sergio Henao and Vincenzo Nibali at the front of the race. Nibali is | :07:29. | :07:32.
having a go again. He wants to get rid of these riders. Alaphilippe is | :07:33. | :07:41.
flying up the mountainside. Oh, it's a crash! Sergio Henao is down. | :07:42. | :07:49.
Vincenzo Nibali is down! Another Olympic dream, gone in a flash. | :07:50. | :07:58.
Rafal Majka is out in the front, alone. Geraint Thomas crashes out of | :07:59. | :08:03.
the Olympic Games on the final descent. The chase is very much on. | :08:04. | :08:12.
Denmark and Belgian after him. It would come down to a sprint for the | :08:13. | :08:25.
three. Majka is a wily rider. The race is rapidly approaching the | :08:26. | :08:29.
beach at Copacabana. Here we go, into the finishing straight. Greg | :08:30. | :08:36.
Van Avermaet goes for it. Greg Van Avermaet is going to take the | :08:37. | :08:41.
victory for Belgium! Van Avermaet is the Olympic champion! Yacoub | :08:42. | :08:44.
Fuglsang of Denmark six the silver and Rafal Majka has to settle for | :08:45. | :08:46.
bronze. For me, it was really hard. I was | :08:47. | :09:09.
not the favourite, but I had a really great day. The last 15K went | :09:10. | :09:16.
perfect. The other guys crashed because they took a risk. I just | :09:17. | :09:21.
kept it safe and stayed focused. I know I am a good sprinter, so | :09:22. | :09:27.
everything went perfect in the informing. I caught Majka and I was | :09:28. | :09:32.
the fastest guy of the two, so an incredible moment. Simon Brotherton | :09:33. | :09:38.
was your commentator, alongside this man, Chris Boardman. How punishing | :09:39. | :09:44.
was that race? It was tough for us. Six hours of commentating! I think | :09:45. | :09:48.
it is the toughest Olympic road race I have ever seen. I went back to the | :09:49. | :09:54.
60s, looking for a cause of similar severity, couldn't find one. It is | :09:55. | :09:58.
about as hard as it gets. It was a fantastic race. We had a bit of | :09:59. | :10:02.
everything. We had crosswinds off the sea, cobbles, fantastic climbing | :10:03. | :10:07.
and the sinuous descent, which we said before the show was likely to | :10:08. | :10:10.
be more pivotal than the climb. And that proved to be the case. Why do | :10:11. | :10:16.
you think it was so perilous for them? Partly because an Olympic gold | :10:17. | :10:19.
was on the line as they were going down. That is a big factor. The road | :10:20. | :10:29.
drops off and then there is concrete and immovable trees so if you make a | :10:30. | :10:33.
mistake, there is no recovering. You're going down. And at the end of | :10:34. | :10:38.
it, a few minutes later is an Olympic gold medal. So they are | :10:39. | :10:43.
right on the edge. I was surprised when Nibali went down, he is one of | :10:44. | :10:46.
the best descenders in the world. They already had his group of three | :10:47. | :10:50.
away, but he was trying to split them up, went too fast and lost | :10:51. | :10:56.
everything. When you look at Van Avermaet is a winner, would you say | :10:57. | :11:01.
it is the best team that delivers it. It is not the best one that wins | :11:02. | :11:07.
the gold medal. I don't mean that disparagingly. It is a different | :11:08. | :11:12.
kind of race when you have about 30 guys who could possibly get over the | :11:13. | :11:15.
top, and then it comes down to who can win a sprint from a group. You | :11:16. | :11:22.
can't control the race, so everybody is riding it for themselves. As far | :11:23. | :11:26.
as Geraint Thomas is concerned, we saw his crash at the end and Team GB | :11:27. | :11:32.
as a whole, how will they be feeling? I think they can be proud | :11:33. | :11:36.
of themselves. I don't like it when you have a poor performance and you | :11:37. | :11:40.
try to find the good points, but they did ride a fantastic race, much | :11:41. | :11:44.
better than London. They played to their strengths by not riding for | :11:45. | :11:48.
one individual. They used everybody wisely. They were not defending, and | :11:49. | :11:54.
at the end of the day, they didn't quite have the legs. Geraint Thomas | :11:55. | :11:57.
had a possibility to get back on terms but then he got caught in a | :11:58. | :12:02.
crash as well. Of course, the priority for Chris Froome going into | :12:03. | :12:07.
these Olympics was the time trial, which is on Wednesday. It is a good | :12:08. | :12:12.
one for him, because it is hilly. I was surprised he was off the pace | :12:13. | :12:20.
today. Hopefully, he has still got something there. He has certainly | :12:21. | :12:23.
got an Olympic medal to go after. I would be surprised if he was not at | :12:24. | :12:29.
least on the podium. How difficult will it be for Lizzie Armistead | :12:30. | :12:32.
tomorrow in the women's road race? Or do you think she is at her most | :12:33. | :12:38.
comfortable on the bike? We will not see to she gets there. The distress | :12:39. | :12:42.
she has had over the last couple of weeks will have an impact, but what | :12:43. | :12:46.
that will be, whether it motivates her to get out and prove a point, or | :12:47. | :12:50.
you could be drained by everything, we don't know. But she has got the | :12:51. | :12:54.
form and she is a fighter. Let's hope that comes out tomorrow. Chris | :12:55. | :12:59.
will be part of the commentary team again with Simon Brotherton for the | :13:00. | :13:03.
women's road race tomorrow. As well as Lizzie Armistead, we have Emma | :13:04. | :13:04.
Pooley and Nikki Harris. Make no mistake, Adam Peaty is a | :13:05. | :13:54.
phenomenal swimmer. He is competing here at his first Olympic Games at | :13:55. | :13:58.
the age of 21 but already, he is the world record-holder, the European | :13:59. | :14:05.
champion. The Aquatics Centre, just over my shoulder, people are pouring | :14:06. | :14:08.
in. Because of the timings in Brazil, the finals will happen very | :14:09. | :14:12.
late for you at home, well past midnight, around two a.m.. But for | :14:13. | :14:17.
the crowds here, it's a fantastic late-night treat. Let's tell you a | :14:18. | :14:20.
bit more about Adam Peaty. As I said, he is the world champion and | :14:21. | :14:23.
world record-holder, the first man to swim the 100 metre breaststroke | :14:24. | :14:28.
in under 58 seconds. He comes here with the pressure of expectation on | :14:29. | :14:33.
him, but he was up in a hit this morning alongside team-mate Ross | :14:34. | :14:44.
Murdoch. Adam was in lane four. Ross Murdoch is the world bronze | :14:45. | :14:46.
medallist at this event. Adrian Moorhouse was in the commentary box | :14:47. | :14:47.
alongside Andy Jameson. COMMENTATOR: It's not been so fast | :14:48. | :14:58.
so far, but what can they do. They are in a great position next to each | :14:59. | :15:03.
other. There is Ross Murdoch and Adam Peaty, great shot, the two | :15:04. | :15:07.
British boys, and there is the world champion and the world record | :15:08. | :15:09.
holder, the world number one, the favourite to win the Olympic title, | :15:10. | :15:14.
Adam Peaty. Ross Murdoch will give him a run for his money, I think. | :15:15. | :15:22.
The final heat of the men's 100 metres breaststroke and Great | :15:23. | :15:30.
Britain's world champion, world record-holder, European champion, | :15:31. | :15:32.
Commonwealth champion, has started very well indeed. Adam Peaty in four | :15:33. | :15:37.
in the Red Hat with Ross Murdoch of Great Britain also going well in | :15:38. | :15:41.
three. Great start from Adam Peaty, that stroke is so strong. I can't | :15:42. | :15:45.
wait to see the 50 metres split, could be an world record and it | :15:46. | :15:49.
would not surprise me if he went for it right now. Underworld record, | :15:50. | :15:55.
26.69, huge, 0.35 under the world record, he looks fantastic, he is | :15:56. | :15:58.
holding the water really well, let's see what he's got left and asked 15 | :15:59. | :16:03.
metres. He's really going well, pushing his stroke, his turnover is | :16:04. | :16:06.
extremely fast and this could be a massive world record if he can hold | :16:07. | :16:10.
onto it. It is his world record, he is swimming away from the field, | :16:11. | :16:17.
57.92, we are looking for, from Adam Peaty, 57.9 two. This is going to be | :16:18. | :16:24.
outstanding, 57.5, my goodness me! 57.5, half a second underneath the | :16:25. | :16:29.
world record, a massive heat from Adam Peaty. He did not need to do it | :16:30. | :16:34.
but he certainly did it, blew the field away. Massive world record. | :16:35. | :16:38.
Confirmation of the result of the last heat of the men's 100 metres | :16:39. | :16:43.
breast, a new world record for Adam Peaty who looks tremendous. Ross | :16:44. | :16:47.
Murdoch in third and he will be in the semifinals. Adam, what possessed | :16:48. | :16:50.
you to go in there and swim like that? Laying down your cards I | :16:51. | :16:55.
guess. I mean, showing a bit of a hand. What was it? 26.6 nine. I've | :16:56. | :17:02.
been practising the front end for while now, and to come back, I heard | :17:03. | :17:06.
the crowd screaming more and more as I got towards the wall and I realise | :17:07. | :17:09.
there was something dodgy going on! I just enjoyed my first Olympic | :17:10. | :17:14.
Games. Officially and Olympia now, it's great to get out here and enjoy | :17:15. | :17:17.
the atmosphere. It does not matter what country they are from, they are | :17:18. | :17:21.
all cheering me and saying well done which is what the Olympics is about. | :17:22. | :17:26.
Not being any pressure because you are spearheading the British | :17:27. | :17:29.
swimming team. Hopefully tonight, get a better performance in the | :17:30. | :17:33.
final, see what we have got. Hopefully I will get the confidence | :17:34. | :17:36.
of the other swimmers, don't be afraid of this, it is just swimming, | :17:37. | :17:40.
two lengths at the end of the day, what you have done all your life and | :17:41. | :17:43.
hopefully that will translate to the kids back home watching and anyone | :17:44. | :17:46.
who wants to get involved with swimming and hopefully, you come to | :17:47. | :17:51.
this arena, you will feel a bit scared, yeah, it is Gary but once | :17:52. | :17:54.
you are in the lane, it is absolutely amazing. It is one of the | :17:55. | :17:58.
things you are bringing two bridges swimming and you must be pleased | :17:59. | :18:00.
with everyone else because the whole squad did well today, everyone in a | :18:01. | :18:05.
final. It's really great to be able to push the rest of the swimming | :18:06. | :18:08.
team but the job is not done until we have the medals around our necks. | :18:09. | :18:11.
We are looking to get the best performance now, get my head down | :18:12. | :18:15.
and see what happens. Great start, so good to see you. Well done. | :18:16. | :18:22.
Adam Peaty so relaxed until despite the fact he broke the world record | :18:23. | :18:26.
by more than half a second, Adrian Moorhouse was the last British male | :18:27. | :18:31.
swimming champion in 1988. Are we looking at the next in Adam Peaty? I | :18:32. | :18:35.
think we probably are! It would be hard to bet against him. He is so | :18:36. | :18:40.
dominant, he has been dominant since 2014, winning the World | :18:41. | :18:42.
Championships, world record-holder coming into this and he smashed the | :18:43. | :18:45.
world record and is way ahead of anyone else. It is very exciting. | :18:46. | :18:59.
Semifinals tonight and his final is tomorrow night, no danger of him | :19:00. | :19:01.
beating too soon? I'm suddenly worried! He's got at least three | :19:02. | :19:04.
swims in him, he knows how to do this, the heats, semifinals and | :19:05. | :19:06.
final and he normally gets quicker as he goes through the competition. | :19:07. | :19:09.
He's always said, 3am UK time, I think by the time zone suits him | :19:10. | :19:12.
better tonight, the evening, so I expected to get quicker. There's no | :19:13. | :19:17.
reason to worry. That is hugely confident, it is a very short list | :19:18. | :19:20.
of Olympics mean champions as far as the men is concerned, there's you, | :19:21. | :19:25.
Duncan Goodhew and David Wilkie was the first. How much of an | :19:26. | :19:29.
inspiration to you was David Wilkie? He was huge, I was 12 when he won | :19:30. | :19:34.
his gold medal so I was inspired by that. Adam was not born when I won | :19:35. | :19:38.
mine so he was not inspired by me! This is David in Montreal, when he | :19:39. | :19:42.
smashed the world record by three seconds. I remember watching this on | :19:43. | :19:46.
a black-and-white TV upstairs at my mum and dad's house and I was a | :19:47. | :19:58.
member of the city of Bradford swimming club and I met him not long | :19:59. | :20:01.
after. This is done good in Moscow. It's amazing how the three of you | :20:02. | :20:03.
became such well-known faces. It is because it was so rare I suppose. | :20:04. | :20:06.
Exactly, this is you in 1988. Can you remember much about it? I have | :20:07. | :20:10.
got hair which is interesting! I remember quite a lot about it but it | :20:11. | :20:15.
was a long time ago, 28 years. I think Adam was not even born when I | :20:16. | :20:19.
won mine. He's been inspired by London, actually, talking about | :20:20. | :20:23.
inspiring a nation, he was on the junior team, 16, 17, and he said he | :20:24. | :20:26.
wanted to be at the next Games and what a rapid rise. Fantastic. I | :20:27. | :20:32.
think he knows the legacy of breaststroke swimming but he's not | :20:33. | :20:34.
beholden to it, he's doing his own thing. Mel Marshall, his coach, | :20:35. | :20:38.
knows international swimming. We all know her and she was swimming when | :20:39. | :20:42.
we were. They are a great unit and they have every chance of getting | :20:43. | :20:45.
the gold medal and what a great addition to the Games. Tremendously | :20:46. | :20:49.
exciting for him and bridges swimming, even more exciting is the | :20:50. | :20:52.
fact he may not be the only one because James Guy's strongest event | :20:53. | :20:56.
is the 200 metres free which is coming up for him on Monday, he is | :20:57. | :21:00.
the world champion in that. Today he was in action in the 400 freestyle. | :21:01. | :21:08.
His seat was not the most impressive thing in the world but we will have | :21:09. | :21:12.
a look and see what happened. COMMENTATOR: The final heat of the | :21:13. | :21:16.
men's 400 metres freestyle and this is wide open now, Mack Horton of | :21:17. | :21:22.
Australia in four, James Guy of Great Britain in five. Well, we have | :21:23. | :21:29.
just seen an average second last heat, various Mack Horton, by far | :21:30. | :21:33.
the fastest in the world this year, 3.41 but surely, there is James Guy, | :21:34. | :21:37.
silver medallist at the World Championships for Great Britain last | :21:38. | :21:40.
year, very clean shaven and he's got a cracking chance of making this | :21:41. | :21:47.
final. Stephen Milne of Great Britain in lane one. | :21:48. | :21:53.
Well, it must be an advantage to be in the final heat because the second | :21:54. | :21:58.
last heat was not great. They must have taken great heart, all eight of | :21:59. | :22:04.
these guys. You are right, and the because Yang probably spotted the | :22:05. | :22:06.
pace was off and made the move towards the end, to just do enough | :22:07. | :22:10.
to get into maybe the outside lane, you know, you are right. Really | :22:11. | :22:15.
looking forward to see how Mack Horton swims in four and James Guy | :22:16. | :22:22.
in five. James Guy, the world champion, 200 metres freestyle from | :22:23. | :22:27.
last year. Great Britain having two world champions entering this | :22:28. | :22:30.
Olympic Games. Red Cap, looking good in the middle of the lane. Mack | :22:31. | :22:35.
Horton, similar age, 20 years old. As you said, Andy, an awesome | :22:36. | :22:41.
3:41.50 five. That was the Australian trial this year, fastest | :22:42. | :22:47.
by a long way. -- 3:41.6 five. But James Guy was really good. James Guy | :22:48. | :22:54.
was fifth at the 50, first at the hundred, 53.8 and he looks good | :22:55. | :22:58.
indeed. My goodness, what a difference to the European | :22:59. | :23:00.
Championships he swam where he was not really ready, training through | :23:01. | :23:05.
it in London earlier and I think got a bit of a wake-up call. But he | :23:06. | :23:09.
looks beautiful here, lovely, long and strong and leading it out for | :23:10. | :23:12.
Great Britain. That is what he's got to do. 3.45 low and he is in, 3.45 | :23:13. | :23:21.
high and he's out. Not a great turn. Interesting, as you said, there's a | :23:22. | :23:25.
number of swimmers here that are capable of making the final. Some of | :23:26. | :23:28.
them won't and they are pretty much in line, the first five. Lane two, | :23:29. | :23:34.
Connor Dwyer, very experienced 27-year-old. Just having the edge | :23:35. | :23:40.
but James Guy, very strong. At the trials, you are right, he did not | :23:41. | :23:43.
shake down, he went in a smallish suit but did not swim well. That is | :23:44. | :23:49.
the halfway turning this last heat of the men's 400 metres freestyle | :23:50. | :23:53.
and James Guy of Great Britain turns first that the hundred, second at | :23:54. | :23:58.
the 200 metres down, 1:50.7 and he's in a good place but now the big guys | :23:59. | :24:02.
go and Mack Horton is starting to go to his legs a bit, in the yellow | :24:03. | :24:06.
hat, one lane up from the Red Hat James Guy and one lane closer to us, | :24:07. | :24:10.
the other Australian, David McKeon. They both look very good. Mack | :24:11. | :24:16.
Horton and Connor Dwyer second, Gabriel Betty third and we did not | :24:17. | :24:20.
talk about them. James Guy, don't let Mack Horton go, he's definitely | :24:21. | :24:25.
made a move. Absolutely, very strong, powerful shoulders were Mack | :24:26. | :24:28.
Horton and James Guy is in the right place, he is where he needs to be. | :24:29. | :24:35.
He's the world champion at 200. This is his favourite event. Connor Dwyer | :24:36. | :24:41.
in lane two, taking lead. 100 metres to go and Connor Dwyer, 0.35 ahead | :24:42. | :24:47.
and he has made a massive move up there in lane two and James Guy has | :24:48. | :24:51.
work to do to make the final. He is currently lying in about fifth place | :24:52. | :24:54.
and the other guys have gone very, very hard, pretty early. He has | :24:55. | :24:58.
still got plenty in the tank, I'm sure but work to do, James Guy, in | :24:59. | :25:02.
the Red Hat in the centre. This is the last heat and he is going to | :25:03. | :25:08.
have to go, 3.45 low to make it in and he's looking a bit tired, fifth, | :25:09. | :25:14.
3.47, he's got to come back in 28 flat, not looking good in the | :25:15. | :25:17.
centre, got some work to do, starting to, but a lot today. He's | :25:18. | :25:22.
got a good kick but he is still in fifth, this is dangerous. Connor | :25:23. | :25:25.
Dwyer having a race of his life and James Guy, if he can get into | :25:26. | :25:29.
fourth, he's got a chance but this is not good. Good for the other | :25:30. | :25:32.
guys. Mack Horton coming through strongly as well. Connor Dwyer wins | :25:33. | :25:37.
it, a much faster heat and James Guy still has half a chance. Mack Horton | :25:38. | :25:43.
second, Gabriel Betty third and James Guy is fifth, with 3:45.3. I | :25:44. | :25:51.
think he's in, you know. You know what? He is, he is in the final. | :25:52. | :26:00.
He's made it by 0.18 seconds. Five of the last heat making it in. | :26:01. | :26:04.
Connor Dwyer, Mack Horton, Gabriel Betty, David McKeon and James Guy, | :26:05. | :26:08.
Andy Goode swim from Stephen Mill, lifetime best, 3.46 flat. Well done | :26:09. | :26:15.
to him. Just missed the final. A bit closer than you would like? Yes, | :26:16. | :26:22.
lots of good guys in that heat. Glad to be through to the finals tonight. | :26:23. | :26:26.
Did you think before you went in, low 45 will make it, high 45 words? | :26:27. | :26:32.
I knew it would be quite a fast time to get through but I knew mid to | :26:33. | :26:35.
high 45 would not make it and is nothing which was quite nice. | :26:36. | :26:40.
Unusual swimming, you went out hard and it looks like your legs are | :26:41. | :26:43.
hurting a bit? Bit, trying to take it out and hold on. I knew Mack | :26:44. | :26:47.
Horton and David McKeon would come back faster than what the plan. Got | :26:48. | :26:51.
a plan for this evening? Root I think so. Going to tell us? No. I | :26:52. | :26:58.
wouldn't either. Thank you and thank you to the guys home. James Guy a | :26:59. | :27:03.
bit defensive but possibly because he was not very pleased with the | :27:04. | :27:06.
swim but he has got through to the final which is tonight at 2:30am UK | :27:07. | :27:11.
time. Can you suddenly pick yourself up, after something goes wrong in | :27:12. | :27:13.
the heat and you can put it right in the final in the evening? Sometimes | :27:14. | :27:17.
it is as much about the body waking up. You should be able to pull off | :27:18. | :27:21.
two really good swims and Adam Peaty has done a great one and will do | :27:22. | :27:24.
another tonight. You would hope James Guy has something left in him. | :27:25. | :27:29.
Maybe this morning, the time zone, waking up, but I would like to have | :27:30. | :27:34.
seen him be a bit faster. He looks a bit tired but he might have | :27:35. | :27:37.
something in the tank. Let's chat about a few of the others in action | :27:38. | :27:40.
this morning, including Hannah Miley, a double Commonwealth gold | :27:41. | :27:44.
medallist in the 400 individual medley, she's never won an Olympic | :27:45. | :27:47.
medal in her third Olympics. Does he have a chance? A great job Tom | :27:48. | :27:52.
Herron Aimee Willmott, fourth and fifth qualified, so they are right | :27:53. | :27:55.
in the middle of it. The top three are stronger, they are the three | :27:56. | :28:04.
very strong summers. Hannah has beaten a couple of them before. On | :28:05. | :28:07.
the day, the night, she's got a great chance. I think she will find | :28:08. | :28:11.
it hard because you, you will probably get the gold but you never | :28:12. | :28:16.
know. To be honest, the way she is improving with age, it is very | :28:17. | :28:19.
unusual for swim is to get that much better later in life. She is | :28:20. | :28:24.
self-styled, the iron Lady, every meet in the last two or three years, | :28:25. | :28:29.
she has entered lots and lots of races, Hosszu, summing tough, | :28:30. | :28:32.
getting tired and then doing race after race. She's got, for an older | :28:33. | :28:38.
swimmer, she is doing pretty well but she trained in the state, she | :28:39. | :28:41.
has been at USC for a long time, she married her coach, her husband is an | :28:42. | :28:47.
American summing coach. She works hard. This is how dominant Hosszu is | :28:48. | :28:53.
because she is miles out in front but Hannah Miley is doing well and | :28:54. | :28:57.
the main thing for her is a medal of any colour would be a triumph | :28:58. | :29:02.
because to be honest, Hosszu is untouchable. Here, you see the | :29:03. | :29:08.
woman... The world record line is the green line and she is head of it | :29:09. | :29:13.
but the record set in 2012 was an amazing last 100 metres freestyle | :29:14. | :29:17.
and Hosszu could not repeat it, just misses the world record but this is | :29:18. | :29:21.
how far ahead she is the rest of the field. Everyone else is going for | :29:22. | :29:24.
silver and bronze and there's no reason why Hannah Miley, if she | :29:25. | :29:27.
believes in herself if she has the confidence to swim her own race but | :29:28. | :29:30.
raise the two goals for the silver or bronze. That is going to be quite | :29:31. | :29:35.
important, not to feel like she can't get it but Hosszu, the | :29:36. | :29:38.
world-record slips away towards the end. Just a reminder, when the world | :29:39. | :29:44.
record was set, the last length was quicker than Ryan Lochte did in the | :29:45. | :29:47.
men's equivalent. But Hannah Miley did go through and spoke to Sharron | :29:48. | :29:55.
Davies afterwards. To be honest, Hosszu smoking, but silver and | :29:56. | :29:59.
bronze is up for grabs. Evenly gold because can she back it up? It is | :30:00. | :30:04.
game tonight. It is going to be who can get the most recovered and come | :30:05. | :30:07.
back faster and more fighting fit. And you know, we can go for it and | :30:08. | :30:12.
if we can come away with one or two medals or no medals, it is really | :30:13. | :30:15.
happy to get through to the final. That was the first stage. Now I've | :30:16. | :30:20.
got to work on the second stage. You are so experienced now and also, | :30:21. | :30:24.
just been a bit unlucky. There's a part of me that says this is your | :30:25. | :30:25.
time. I am not getting too wound up by | :30:26. | :30:36.
emotions, but I guess experience has helped me to come into this a lot | :30:37. | :30:41.
but in my head. Physically, I have always been prepared, but the last | :30:42. | :30:44.
part has been in my head. I can't control what everybody else does. As | :30:45. | :30:48.
long as I can try and go faster than this morning, that is always a | :30:49. | :30:54.
bonus. Good luck tonight. What we love about Hannah Miley is that | :30:55. | :30:58.
whatever happens, she smiles. It is widely call her Smiley Miley. But | :30:59. | :31:03.
the swimming team and the genetics team and tennis are a good example | :31:04. | :31:08.
of, if you get a couple of people who are really good, they bring | :31:09. | :31:13.
people along with them. Aimee Willmott has also qualified for the | :31:14. | :31:18.
final. Absolutely, and the two of them swam well today. And Aimee | :31:19. | :31:29.
deserves that final. This was her heat. She swam a great breaststroke | :31:30. | :31:37.
leg and couldn't quite hold off the American on the last length mother | :31:38. | :31:42.
she goes interest, one place behind Miley. It is a great chance for | :31:43. | :31:46.
either of the two Brits to get among the medals. I was pleased with this. | :31:47. | :31:52.
I have seen some of the British swimmers not be as tough in the | :31:53. | :31:57.
heats, but they are doing a lot better already. London was | :31:58. | :32:09.
disappointing. Exactly, one silver and one bronze in London. More is | :32:10. | :32:14.
expected here. There is a new name, Max Lichfield. How did he get on? He | :32:15. | :32:22.
swam well this morning. Most of the British team is swimming well. The | :32:23. | :32:28.
Japanese was the favourite coming into it. Lichfield modified in fifth | :32:29. | :32:40.
or sixth. Really impressive for the guy from Sheffield. Good Yorkshire | :32:41. | :32:47.
boy. Was there a decent crowd in that? It seats about 14000 and there | :32:48. | :32:52.
were about 8000 in there. So there were gaps, but it filled up as the | :32:53. | :32:56.
event went on. I have heard about the queues outside. We drove past | :32:57. | :33:00.
them on the way in and I thought, that will be interesting. I think | :33:01. | :33:06.
there was an issue. But it was a knowledgeable crowd. They were all | :33:07. | :33:09.
cheering in the right places. They knew what was going on. And the | :33:10. | :33:15.
biggest star was Michael Phelps, who carried the flag for the opening | :33:16. | :33:19.
ceremony for team USA. He will be in action tomorrow. He was whisked away | :33:20. | :33:22.
straightaway after the opening ceremony. I think he will find it | :33:23. | :33:26.
tough, as he gets a bit older. To get an individual gold. But a relay | :33:27. | :33:33.
gold should be within his grasp. He has got 18 of them so far, so he | :33:34. | :33:36.
could let someone else have a chance! He has double what anybody | :33:37. | :33:41.
else has ever got it is extraordinary. And he could get a 20 | :33:42. | :33:45.
by virtue of the relays. Adrian is heading off now because the finals | :33:46. | :33:49.
tonight are very late, your time, but worth staying up for because | :33:50. | :33:51.
there is British action. But there are many ways in which you | :33:52. | :34:28.
can watch these Olympic Games in Rio. | :34:29. | :34:34.
To make even more of your Rio 2016 Olympic Games, | :34:35. | :34:36.
from boxing to badminton, hockey to handball, you've got it | :34:37. | :34:38.
Alongside coverage on BBC One, BBC Four and Radio 5 Live, | :34:39. | :34:43.
you can access up to 24 live sports on the BBC Sport website | :34:44. | :34:47.
or via the BBC Sport app, on mobile, connected TVs and games consoles. | :34:48. | :34:52.
The very best of these will be available on the Red Button, | :34:53. | :34:55.
via satellite, cable or Freeview, depending on your set-top box | :34:56. | :34:58.
If that's not enough, you can download the BBC Sport app | :34:59. | :35:08.
where you can set up news and medal alerts and live event reminders | :35:09. | :35:11.
so you can follow all your favourite sports. | :35:12. | :35:17.
There is still plenty to come this evening. Beth Tweddle will join us | :35:18. | :35:24.
to talk gymnastics. As you can hear behind the scenes, James Cracknell | :35:25. | :35:32.
is hard work over there on bench! That is the first time I have got a | :35:33. | :35:36.
smile out of him since he arrived. We will get his thoughts on the | :35:37. | :35:39.
rowing on what was a really difficult day at the Lagoa a bit | :35:40. | :35:44.
later. But now we are going to show you some boxing action. It takes | :35:45. | :35:49.
case about a mile away from here in pavilion six, it's called, about a | :35:50. | :35:58.
mile away. We have 12 Team GB boxes here as they go over the next | :35:59. | :36:01.
fortnight. Three of them have been in action today, so we will show you | :36:02. | :36:06.
that, starting with the lightest my Galal Yafai. Both his brothers are | :36:07. | :36:13.
professional boxers and they have been advising him. We will show you | :36:14. | :36:18.
the last two micrograms of his bout. He is taking on Fotsala from Cameron | :36:19. | :36:20.
-- the last two rounds of his bout. COMMENTATOR: Defy out onto the front | :36:21. | :36:33.
foot immediately and helping himself to a good combination to bring this | :36:34. | :36:39.
second round, Fotsala trying to re-establish himself. A cracking | :36:40. | :36:45.
southpaw from Yafai, who started the second round very brightly. He has | :36:46. | :36:53.
upped the tempo a bit. Fotsala has a problem. When he delivers that | :36:54. | :36:58.
backhand of his, occasionally his relay comes around and he becomes | :36:59. | :37:07.
square on. Then you are open to attack because your target area is | :37:08. | :37:11.
full on. So Fotsala has to watch that. He has to keep his back leg in | :37:12. | :37:18.
that weird position. A good left hand once again from Yafai. That | :37:19. | :37:23.
southpaw left has been a really effective shot to begin this | :37:24. | :37:26.
contest. A good ride left combination from Fotsala, though. -- | :37:27. | :37:34.
right left combination. Terrific mid-range punches from Yafai, | :37:35. | :37:37.
jolting the head back of the man in red. A good right hook over the top | :37:38. | :37:48.
from Fotsala. Very aggressive, competitive boxer and Yafai is happy | :37:49. | :37:52.
to engage in the trade, but that brings Fotsala into the contest. His | :37:53. | :37:57.
mouthpiece has been dislodged, the referee taking the opportunity to | :37:58. | :38:02.
intervene immediately rather than waiting for a break. Just a lapse in | :38:03. | :38:07.
concentration from Yafai. He started the round very well, but again | :38:08. | :38:13.
decided to hold his feet and trade and you don't want to do that | :38:14. | :38:18.
against Fotsala. He is strong and flat-footed. He needs you in front | :38:19. | :38:22.
of him to deliver those powerful shots. Yafai made the wrong decision | :38:23. | :38:27.
to stand and trade. You must keep hitting and moving the way he boxed | :38:28. | :38:34.
in that opening round. He appears to be in a different realm to Fotsala. | :38:35. | :38:41.
Fotsala is having success at drawing him into a brawl at times. And | :38:42. | :38:47.
Yafai, being a competitive bidding, is sometimes happy to stand and | :38:48. | :38:51.
accommodate him in a trade, but that brings Fotsala into the contest, | :38:52. | :38:55.
that is where he enjoys most of his success. Yafai should take a step | :38:56. | :39:07.
back occasionally, bring him on. If you hold your feet, it allows him to | :39:08. | :39:11.
lump the shots. But the quality work is coming from Yafai. But you have | :39:12. | :39:17.
to give credit to Fotsala. He is trading well, the Cameron boxer. | :39:18. | :39:24.
National champion at light flyweight in 2012, Fotsala. Comes here as part | :39:25. | :39:29.
of a four strong Cameron Ian boxing team. That single right that he | :39:30. | :39:32.
landed brings a round of applause from the crowd here in attendance at | :39:33. | :39:39.
Rio central pavilion six. Here is the fault that Richard pointed out. | :39:40. | :39:42.
Look how his right foot ended up in front of his left leg, turning into | :39:43. | :39:47.
the southpaw stance momentarily. A good start by Galal Yafai. But | :39:48. | :39:53.
Fotsala was allowed to come into it by forcing trades. Into the third | :39:54. | :40:00.
and final round. If I took the opening round across the board for | :40:01. | :40:06.
the three scoring judges, Fotsala getting a share from one judge of | :40:07. | :40:11.
the second round. A cracking southpaw again from Yafai, but look | :40:12. | :40:16.
at the aggression being exhibited by Fotsala, a good right hand to the | :40:17. | :40:22.
body. A very aggressive start to this third and final round by | :40:23. | :40:27.
Fotsala as he looks to extend his stay in the Olympic tournament after | :40:28. | :40:31.
conceding the opening round unanimously, when Yafai boxed very | :40:32. | :40:37.
effectively. A good white left combination from Yafai. A fast start | :40:38. | :40:42.
from Fotsala. He has been given a boost in that second round. Again, | :40:43. | :40:52.
if I is coming forward, mainly because his hands have dropped a | :40:53. | :40:57.
bit. He is relaxing, but occasionally he has relaxed too | :40:58. | :40:59.
much. But Yafai has better boxing skills. Good right hand by Fotsala | :41:00. | :41:14.
once again, and a cracking left foot. Again, the mouthpiece of | :41:15. | :41:19.
Fotsala has been dislodged as he ran to a punch delivered by Yafai. The | :41:20. | :41:25.
nature of this contest is similar to when he won the semifinal in the | :41:26. | :41:28.
European qualifications tournament against Spain's Samuel Carmona and | :41:29. | :41:33.
I'll boxed him with ease in the course of the first round, but then | :41:34. | :41:36.
allowed the compact Spaniard to get back into the contest. We are seeing | :41:37. | :41:42.
a similar display here, where Fotsala has had moments of success | :41:43. | :41:46.
by virtue of his aggression. Good left hand once again from Fotsala. | :41:47. | :41:52.
Yafai is occasionally holding his feet. When he boxes and moves, he is | :41:53. | :42:02.
the governor inside the ring. If Fotsala comes forward, you have to | :42:03. | :42:07.
switch to a left uppercut right hook. But the priority for Yafai has | :42:08. | :42:12.
got to be long-range work, keep him at a distance. And the mouthpiece | :42:13. | :42:18.
comes out again from Fotsala. The referee might have a word with the | :42:19. | :42:23.
corner. They might even take a point off for that. That is the thing, | :42:24. | :42:27.
because if the mouthpiece is repeatedly dislodged... And there it | :42:28. | :42:33.
is. Because it can be used as a tactic to gain an advantage if a | :42:34. | :42:36.
boxer is under pressure or feeling fatigued. So Fotsala is in real | :42:37. | :42:44.
trouble now. That warning will mean one point off his points score in | :42:45. | :42:48.
random number three. If he gets another one, it is already a | :42:49. | :42:52.
difficult position and now it is an impossible mountain to climb. | :42:53. | :42:55.
Fotsala is going to have to knock his man out and put him on the | :42:56. | :43:00.
canvas for the count of ten or more because he has been given two | :43:01. | :43:03.
warnings in the course of the third round because of the mouthpiece | :43:04. | :43:07.
being dislodged four times. And that can be used by boxers to gain an | :43:08. | :43:11.
advantage if they are under pressure. That is just terrible | :43:12. | :43:15.
preparation. You should have a mouthpiece that fits and does not | :43:16. | :43:22.
fall out when you open your mouth. Remember, it was a feature of one of | :43:23. | :43:29.
the contests of the legendary bouts between the late Diego Corollas and | :43:30. | :43:33.
Castillo, and the mouthpiece kept coming out. Fighters can use it to | :43:34. | :43:37.
buy time. I don't think Fotsala was doing that here, but an ill fitting | :43:38. | :43:43.
mouthpiece coming out four times during the round, two warnings | :43:44. | :43:47.
issued, Galal Yafai has surely booked his place through to the | :43:48. | :43:50.
second round of the light flyweight tournament here. We just await the | :43:51. | :43:56.
official announcement, which should see Galal Yafai through to the | :43:57. | :44:03.
second round. By unanimous decision... | :44:04. | :44:14.
Galal Yafai opens his Olympics in Rio 2016 with a unanimous points | :44:15. | :44:23.
decision victory over his Cameron Ian opponent, Simplice Fotsala. He | :44:24. | :44:29.
boxed effectively in the opening round. Then the warnings were | :44:30. | :44:33.
accumulated by Fotsala in the third and final run for the mouthpiece | :44:34. | :44:37.
repeatedly been dislodged, and sealed his fate. But that is of no | :44:38. | :44:41.
concern to Yafai. He goes through to the second round of the tournament. | :44:42. | :44:46.
The problem with the boxing is that you are at the mercy of the draw, | :44:47. | :44:50.
and it is tough next for Yafai because he will take on the | :44:51. | :44:55.
19-year-old Cuban wonder kid, who is also the world champion. So his | :44:56. | :45:00.
second round is particularly tough. Let's move on to the second Brit who | :45:01. | :45:05.
is in action in the boxing today. That is Joe Cordina. | :45:06. | :45:15.
part of me that says this is your time. | :45:16. | :45:20.
quaver he's 24, becoming the third Welshman to win gold, hopefully, | :45:21. | :45:26.
came third in the European Championships and again, the final | :45:27. | :45:30.
round of -- two rounds of his bout against Charly Suarez. COMMENTATOR: | :45:31. | :45:39.
Into the second round we go. The man wearing red, Charly Suarez of the | :45:40. | :45:46.
Philippines, took the opening round 10-9 for Judge A, whereas judges B | :45:47. | :45:49.
and C favour the more eye-catching work of the man in blue but make no | :45:50. | :45:53.
mistake it was a competitive opening round, sneaky right hand once again | :45:54. | :45:57.
from Suarez and if there is a criticism, and I'm loathe to | :45:58. | :46:00.
criticise any boxer but sometimes Joe Cordina's concentration and | :46:01. | :46:04.
workrate can dip and that is when he can bring opponents back into | :46:05. | :46:08.
contests. Vital he keeps his concentration and were great at | :46:09. | :46:11.
optimal level throughout the opening bout in the lightweight tournament. | :46:12. | :46:17.
Yes it is, and he is experienced enough now to anticipate a tempo | :46:18. | :46:20.
change from his opponent. That is what the Philippine corner would | :46:21. | :46:23.
have said to their man, he's lost the first round, you have to do the | :46:24. | :46:27.
workrate and for the first 30 seconds or so, Suarez came out and | :46:28. | :46:30.
has done some better work so Joe Cordina has to up the tempo and | :46:31. | :46:35.
bring his opponent onto the shots but not hold the feet, hit him as he | :46:36. | :46:39.
is coming and then go off to the side and then go again and keep the | :46:40. | :46:42.
movement. There you go, he adjusted his feet as he landed to macro | :46:43. | :46:46.
shots, better from Joe Cordina but you are right, Ronald, he can't | :46:47. | :46:52.
afford to switch. -- landed two shots. Joe Cordina, 24 years old, a | :46:53. | :46:58.
good right hand from the man in blue, already participated in three | :46:59. | :47:01.
World Championships, Joe Cordina. At 60 kilograms, always tends to be on | :47:02. | :47:06.
the receiving end of very difficult draws, coming up against top boys | :47:07. | :47:10.
from around the world. But he's acquired heaps of experience. Some | :47:11. | :47:17.
attention needed. Is that to the bootstrap of his right foot, Joe | :47:18. | :47:24.
Cordina? -- Ryad Boudebouz to Peter Wright character, Joe Cordina, the | :47:25. | :47:28.
clown as we say of the group. He is a great impersonator, he can take of | :47:29. | :47:32.
anyone, he really can. Really talented, makes everyone laugh. -- | :47:33. | :47:38.
he's quite a character. Caught by a right hand as the action resumed | :47:39. | :47:43.
when his bootlace was adjusted, Suarez turning momentarily to the | :47:44. | :47:47.
southpaw stance, coming from the Philippines, it is perhaps | :47:48. | :47:49.
unsurprising as Joe Cordina got through with a good right hand, a | :47:50. | :47:53.
little bit of an Ali shuffle from Charly Suarez, coming from the | :47:54. | :47:56.
Philippines, perhaps unsurprising that his idol is Manny Pacquiao. | :47:57. | :48:02.
Also admires George Foreman and Evander Holyfield and they had | :48:03. | :48:05.
glittering Olympic careers as well, Evander Holyfield from LA 84, the | :48:06. | :48:09.
first Olympic Games when head guards were introduced, George former in | :48:10. | :48:15.
Mexico 68, where he rocked his way to heavyweight gold. -- George | :48:16. | :48:19.
Foreman in Mexico 68. He celebrated by pulling out a tiny American flag. | :48:20. | :48:25.
A another good one-two combination from Suarez. I guess he's just | :48:26. | :48:30.
waiting on the outside. Joe Cordina has got to watch out for, when he | :48:31. | :48:34.
has landed his shots come on the way out occasionally, he gets caught so | :48:35. | :48:39.
he has to keep the guard of a bit higher and then probably move off to | :48:40. | :48:42.
the side. If he goes back in a straight line from he's going to get | :48:43. | :48:45.
caught against this fella. Keep in Suarez to the ropes a few minutes | :48:46. | :48:49.
ago and then scored with a wonderful right hand, did Cordina. The two of | :48:50. | :48:54.
them boxing with their hands down, tempting, fainting, trying to draw a | :48:55. | :48:58.
lead of which they can counter but a very good second round of boxing and | :48:59. | :49:03.
some adjustments made by Charly Suarez during the course of the | :49:04. | :49:12.
around. Into the third and final round we go and Joe Cordina, | :49:13. | :49:17.
representing Great Britain, part of a 12 strong Great Britain boxing | :49:18. | :49:20.
team, larger than the one they had in London. All ten men's weight | :49:21. | :49:27.
classes are filled with boxes, the largest team since Los Angeles, 94 | :49:28. | :49:32.
but their lightweight representative Joe Cordina is in with a really | :49:33. | :49:36.
experienced and at talented operator in Charly Suarez, switching his | :49:37. | :49:42.
feet, bustling, busy boxer. And this contest is intriguingly poised and | :49:43. | :49:46.
on a knife edge coming into this third and final round. That was a | :49:47. | :49:50.
super shot from Joe Cordina, that little right uppercut on the inside, | :49:51. | :49:54.
a cracking punch. Now he's got to concentrate. You know your man is | :49:55. | :49:57.
coming for you. He's got the bit between his teeth, Suarez, so you've | :49:58. | :50:01.
got to get your concentration levels high, hit him as he comes and then | :50:02. | :50:05.
move off to the side. That is the order of the day for Joe Cordina in | :50:06. | :50:10.
this contest now. Some great Welsh Olympians down the years, most | :50:11. | :50:16.
recently Andrew Selby and Fred Evans in London 2012, who came away with | :50:17. | :50:21.
welterweight silver, remember, Ralph Evans in Munich, 1972, he got a | :50:22. | :50:25.
bronze so that is who Joe Cordina is trying to emulate in his efforts to | :50:26. | :50:29.
make the medal podium. Ralph Evans and Fred Evans. From London 2012 but | :50:30. | :50:39.
it is a tightly, closely contested contest, this one, beyond the | :50:40. | :50:43.
halfway point of the third and final round. One suspects that a | :50:44. | :50:45.
grandstand finish from either boxer could be very significant in | :50:46. | :50:50.
determining the outcome of this bout. The better quality work is | :50:51. | :50:54.
definitely coming from Joe Cordina but he's probably got to do a bit | :50:55. | :50:58.
more of it to satisfy the judges. He is not just trying to mix this | :50:59. | :51:03.
contest, he's got to do a bit more now, Joe, in and out, step on the | :51:04. | :51:07.
gas a little bit. He is against an opponent who is not as talented but | :51:08. | :51:10.
is determined. That is always dangerous. The Philippines came here | :51:11. | :51:18.
with only one boxing coach for their two man team. They will be drafting | :51:19. | :51:22.
in Kevin Smith, the former consultant to the Philippines, the | :51:23. | :51:25.
man from Merseyside, the four time coach of Australia but don't be | :51:26. | :51:29.
surprised to see him helping out with the Philippines boxing team if | :51:30. | :51:35.
they progress. Joe Cordina, focused and really firing sharply with the | :51:36. | :51:38.
right hand. Wonderful left hand from the man in blue. Simple shot, wasn't | :51:39. | :51:45.
it? Simple jab, two them, right uppercut on the inside so the | :51:46. | :51:49.
quality work from Joe Cordina, pushing the opponent back | :51:50. | :51:51.
occasionally with those kind of shots. Keep the judges happy. | :51:52. | :51:59.
There's the ten second flapper, good right hand of the solar plexus from | :52:00. | :52:03.
Joe Cordina, right hand cocked, switches to southpaw momentarily and | :52:04. | :52:06.
the two men continuing to faint and fidget as the bell sounds to | :52:07. | :52:13.
conclude what has been a really high quality 60 kilograms lightweight | :52:14. | :52:16.
contest, both men think they have done enough, Joe Cordina pumps his | :52:17. | :52:20.
right fist to the crowd in attendance at Pavilion six in | :52:21. | :52:25.
Riocentro. Remember, it was an intriguingly poised contest coming | :52:26. | :52:30.
into the third and final round. Big Fraser Clark here supporting the | :52:31. | :52:35.
team, one of the best light heavyweights -- best | :52:36. | :52:38.
superheavyweight in the world but Joe Joyce has got the birth in Rio | :52:39. | :52:43.
2016. I thought the better quality work came from Joe Cordina, there. I | :52:44. | :52:47.
would be surprised if this has gone against him. I think he's done | :52:48. | :52:51.
enough to win it. Switched off in the second round but definitely won | :52:52. | :52:56.
the third, for me, and he should it. Nervous moments for both of these | :52:57. | :52:59.
boxers now but we have just witnessed a wonderful bout. This one | :53:00. | :53:06.
taking a while to make its way up to the public address announcer which | :53:07. | :53:09.
means it could well be heading for a split decision. The boxes will be | :53:10. | :53:15.
replaying the contest in their minds now, "When did I did he catch me? | :53:16. | :53:20.
Good high have done more? Have I done enough? -- when did I catch | :53:21. | :53:28.
him? When did he catch me?" Ladies and gentlemen, the winner by split | :53:29. | :53:30.
decision,... Joe Cordina! It is Joe Cordina! He | :53:31. | :53:49.
has his hand raised on a split decision victory over the 14th | :53:50. | :53:53.
ranked boxer in the world, Charly Suarez. Your first win at your first | :53:54. | :54:02.
Olympics, done. How did you find the experience? It was amazing, in front | :54:03. | :54:06.
of all these people. It's only going to get bigger, the crowd. I can't | :54:07. | :54:10.
wait to fight again. What did you make of your performance? Orange | :54:11. | :54:14.
Mackreth I thought I performed well, executed the game plan perfect, | :54:15. | :54:17.
exactly what I thought he would do, come swinging, on the front foot, | :54:18. | :54:21.
and for me, it was to step back and hit him as he comes in and put on | :54:22. | :54:26.
the front foot pressure. I thought I executed it perfectly. You seemed | :54:27. | :54:34.
calm but it was a spread decision and looked really tight. The judges | :54:35. | :54:37.
saw it that way, I thought I won all three rounds. It is what it is, they | :54:38. | :54:41.
are there to judge and I'm there to box and I got the win and that's the | :54:42. | :54:43.
main thing. You said before the tournament, the gold medal was your | :54:44. | :54:46.
rain but after that are you still confident? Of course, every | :54:47. | :54:49.
tournament I go in, always my first fight is shaky and I look to improve | :54:50. | :54:54.
everything about. Gold is there for the taking. -- every single bout. | :54:55. | :55:00.
Your next opponent is the Uzbekistan fifth seed. How do you go about | :55:01. | :55:05.
preparing for him? Same as anyone else, I just books to my advantages. | :55:06. | :55:10.
I will see the video of him when I box on Monday or Tuesday. I will | :55:11. | :55:15.
look over the video and see what we can do to beat him and move on. It | :55:16. | :55:22.
is a tough bout but I'm more than capable of beating him. Brilliant | :55:23. | :55:25.
fight and good luck for the next round. Jessica Crichton asking the | :55:26. | :55:30.
questions to Joe Cordina and as she said his next opponent comes from | :55:31. | :55:39.
Uzbekistan. So two out of two, could the British boxes make it a clean | :55:40. | :55:45.
sweep? Let's focus on the third one, out of the 12 competing, and this is | :55:46. | :55:50.
our heavyweight Lawrence Okolie and there is a real story behind him. | :55:51. | :55:55.
He's from London, fighting in the heavyweights, six foot five, took up | :55:56. | :56:01.
boxing in 2010, he was working in a branch of a fast food outlet in | :56:02. | :56:05.
2012, watched Anthony Joshua and was inspired to get himself fit. Again, | :56:06. | :56:11.
the final two rounds of his fight with Richie and Ron. | :56:12. | :56:16.
COMMENTATOR: So to the second round we go and a left hook which followed | :56:17. | :56:26.
a right hand, forcing Igor Jakubowski to touch down and the | :56:27. | :56:29.
referee said it was a slip and he may well have lost his footing but | :56:30. | :56:32.
he took a couple of shots as well from the man in red and Okolie on | :56:33. | :56:38.
the rampage once more. He's got to steady himself, Okolie, landing some | :56:39. | :56:42.
big shots, it was a slip because he got caught with the right hand, it | :56:43. | :56:44.
was a definite punch that calls that bit of a knockdown but Okolie has | :56:45. | :56:49.
two steady himself. He does not need Jakubowski to close that distance | :56:50. | :56:53.
down. That will give Jakubowski a chance to work on the inside. But | :56:54. | :56:57.
good work from Okolie but he's got to keep it going and maintain the | :56:58. | :57:00.
gap between himself and his opponent. Four years ago, Lawrence | :57:01. | :57:06.
Okolie was working at a well-known fast food burger chain, he saw | :57:07. | :57:13.
Anthony Joshua win Olympic gold and then he took himself down to the | :57:14. | :57:17.
boxing gym in an effort to shift some of the weight. He said he was | :57:18. | :57:21.
diagnosed as clinically obese, that his weight had ballooned up to 120 | :57:22. | :57:26.
kilograms and that is when he discovered his fantastic talent in | :57:27. | :57:30.
the boxing ring. After just 23 bouts in a vest, 25 bouts before Rio now | :57:31. | :57:37.
because he competed in World Series boxing as well, he finds himself in | :57:38. | :57:42.
the opening round of the Olympic boxing tournament and he is boxing | :57:43. | :57:47.
very effectively indeed against the experienced Igor Jakubowski. He's | :57:48. | :57:51.
boxing very well but he's making the odd mistake here and there, allowing | :57:52. | :57:55.
Jakubowski to get a bit closer, so Jakubowski now, what he is doing is | :57:56. | :58:00.
taking all the shots on the elbows. He knows he cannot break the gap and | :58:01. | :58:04.
the distance down so he is edging up and looking for a single shot, maybe | :58:05. | :58:09.
over the top. If Lawrence Okolie fall short with the jab or misses | :58:10. | :58:12.
the target, that is what he is hoping for, Jakubowski, to land one | :58:13. | :58:16.
big shot. He is still dangerous, and powerful. He's just going to want to | :58:17. | :58:23.
look for one shop that may stop or knock Okolie out. That is what he is | :58:24. | :58:28.
hoping for. The reigning European Championship silver medallist, Igor | :58:29. | :58:32.
Jakubowski, the year before that, in 2014, he won the EU European title, | :58:33. | :58:37.
good left hand from the man in blue. He comes in with a glittering set of | :58:38. | :58:41.
credentials. A nine time national championship gold medallist between | :58:42. | :58:48.
2008-2014. Participated twice in the World Championships as well. Heaps | :58:49. | :58:52.
of experience impaired to the still novice Lawrence Okolie. But Okolie's | :58:53. | :58:58.
talent is such, and his desire and confidence that he has been able to | :58:59. | :59:03.
make it through to the Olympic tournament after just 25 contests. | :59:04. | :59:11.
Just feeling the pace slightly here, Okolie, started quickly, remember. | :59:12. | :59:16.
But his fitness is good. I have helped coach the team. They are very | :59:17. | :59:21.
fit indeed. Another good round I think for Okolie. He allowed | :59:22. | :59:24.
Jakubowski to come back into it slightly. Took the opening round of | :59:25. | :59:33.
the ten point system, for all three of the judges, did Okolie. He falls | :59:34. | :59:39.
Jakubowski to touch down but it was not ruled as they count. Can we | :59:40. | :59:45.
listening? That right hand, that was a tremendous shot from Okolie at the | :59:46. | :59:49.
start of the round. Look at the distance and 11 Ritchie gets on his | :59:50. | :59:54.
shots, Okolie, that is his strength, when he's boxing at distance behind | :59:55. | :59:55.
the left and straight right. Dave and Gary in the corner. Let's | :59:56. | :00:07.
look at the scores. Again, Okolie has got it so he is fairly | :00:08. | :00:13.
comfortable, is to see it out now. -- is to see it out. | :00:14. | :00:23.
Into the third and final round we go. The man in red is Lawrence | :00:24. | :00:28.
Okolie of Great Britain, the 23-year-old from East London man who | :00:29. | :00:33.
finds himself in a commanding position, having taken the opening | :00:34. | :00:36.
two rounds across the board for all three scoring judges. As Richie has | :00:37. | :00:41.
been pointing out throughout this opening day of competition, if you | :00:42. | :00:47.
hope to be crowned Olympic champion, you have to go five times during the | :00:48. | :00:54.
tournament. So Okolie would do well to pace himself and ensure that he | :00:55. | :00:58.
doesn't walk into anything silly or picked up an injury that could | :00:59. | :01:02.
curtail his progress. He is on the cusp of progressing to the second | :01:03. | :01:08.
round, having built up a 20-18 point lead for all three scoring judges. | :01:09. | :01:12.
We couldn't hear what was said in the corner of Lawrence Okolie, but I | :01:13. | :01:16.
think they said, get back to your boxing, keep your distance. See the | :01:17. | :01:24.
contest out. Any Polish boxer, they are dangerous. They have produced | :01:25. | :01:28.
some great champions over the years, Poland. So this fellow will be | :01:29. | :01:33.
dangerous right of the last second. That is where Okolie house to keep | :01:34. | :01:37.
concentration levels high and boxed sensibly and keep the distance and | :01:38. | :01:44.
the gap. Jakubowski came through a tough route of qualification, | :01:45. | :01:48.
winning the global Olympic qualification event in Baku, | :01:49. | :01:51.
Azerbaijan, against Houllier Castillo of Ecuador. That was a | :01:52. | :01:56.
hard-fought affair -- Giulio Castillo. So he will continue to | :01:57. | :02:03.
fight, but he perhaps knows he is trailing in this contest and will be | :02:04. | :02:07.
looking to land something big and explosive to put Okolie on the | :02:08. | :02:11.
canvas and out of the contest. Good right hand from Okolie. Perhaps | :02:12. | :02:21.
beginning to feel the pace now, Lawrence Okolie. The most important | :02:22. | :02:28.
punch for Okolie now is the jab, to keep the gap. He doesn't need to | :02:29. | :02:32.
overreach with the right hand. That is what Jakubowski will want. His | :02:33. | :02:37.
most important shot is definitely the right hand over the top, but he | :02:38. | :02:42.
has to get his feet into position to land that shot. Kohli is a difficult | :02:43. | :02:51.
man to get to, because he uses his range well. -- Okolie. Inside the | :02:52. | :02:58.
final 30 seconds now. Concentration will be key for Lawrence Okolie to | :02:59. | :03:00.
make sure he doesn't walk into anything silly from his point of | :03:01. | :03:05.
view. But Jakubowski is having more success closing the distance. There | :03:06. | :03:14.
is the ten second clapper, and surely we will hear the final bell | :03:15. | :03:19.
which should see Lawrence Okolie get through to the second round. It is a | :03:20. | :03:27.
strong finish by Jakubowski, but the performance built up in rounds one | :03:28. | :03:30.
and two should surely be enough to see him declared the victor and go | :03:31. | :03:35.
through to the second round of the 91 kilograms heavyweight tournament. | :03:36. | :03:44.
A good performance from Okolie. He was feeling the pace a bit, but | :03:45. | :03:48.
nevertheless, a great start to the contest. He has seen how to boxed | :03:49. | :03:54.
sensibly and he will have learned a lot from that. He has won well. Once | :03:55. | :04:00.
we get the announcement, which we assume will declare Okolie as the | :04:01. | :04:04.
winner in the second round of the tournament, a silver medallist | :04:05. | :04:11.
awaits. The two men met earlier this summer, and savannah prevailed on a | :04:12. | :04:15.
first-round stoppage in World Series boxing at the five round competition | :04:16. | :04:20.
without the vast, well boxers compete for their respective | :04:21. | :04:25.
nations. That is the man who awaits in random number two. Okolie and | :04:26. | :04:31.
Jakubowski embrace. Let's get the official announcement. | :04:32. | :04:48.
Ladies and gentlemen, by unanimous decision... Lawrence | :04:49. | :05:03.
Okolie! Lawrence Okolie is through to the second round of the | :05:04. | :05:10.
heavyweight Olympic tournament here in Rio 2016, acknowledging the | :05:11. | :05:14.
support he is receiving from the crowd. In that second round, he will | :05:15. | :05:18.
meet the tournament number two seed, the reigning World Championship | :05:19. | :05:21.
silver medallist and Olympian from 2012, the immensely talented Cuban. | :05:22. | :05:28.
You can't ask for more than that, three Team GB boxers in action, | :05:29. | :05:42.
three through to the next round. Steve Bunce 's for the 3G beatboxers | :05:43. | :05:50.
is that six of the 12, if they get through, will have very difficult | :05:51. | :05:54.
second round draw is if everything pans out that way. Is he very | :05:55. | :06:03.
negative, Steve? A little bit. They won, they are doing well. Let's stay | :06:04. | :06:09.
on the positive. Speaking of people who look a bit low at the moment, I | :06:10. | :06:12.
am going to join James Cracknell over there, because he is still sat | :06:13. | :06:16.
on the bench on his own. I will try and cheer him up ahead of the rowing | :06:17. | :06:23.
chat later. So Chappers is off to meet James Cracknell. They will | :06:24. | :06:26.
review the rowing in a moment or two. Let's take you through some of | :06:27. | :06:34.
the headlines of the day. First, one of the big stories of the Games is | :06:35. | :06:39.
the return of William Fox-Pitt, a really serious injury in October | :06:40. | :06:44.
left him in a coma. He was struggling to talk and walk, let | :06:45. | :06:48.
alone ride again, but he was selected to be part of Great | :06:49. | :06:51.
Britain's team along with Gemma Tattersall, Pippa Funnell and Kitty | :06:52. | :06:56.
King. The first two of them were in dressage action today. Let's find | :06:57. | :06:59.
out what happened with Lee McKenzie and Ian Stark. It has been a | :07:00. | :07:06.
scorcher here for the first day of eventing dressage not only in terms | :07:07. | :07:09.
of temperature, but also in terms of performance. The temperatures have | :07:10. | :07:13.
been in the low 30s, but in terms of performance, William Fox-Pitt stood | :07:14. | :07:19.
out today. Ian Stark, it has been an incredible ten months. He was in a | :07:20. | :07:23.
coma after a fall in France. For him to be leading here tonight, what | :07:24. | :07:27.
does that say about him? Well, he is an incredible guy, as we all know. | :07:28. | :07:37.
And he is a winner. There has been a lot said at the past about whether | :07:38. | :07:41.
he will be fit enough to do this. He has just proved all the doubters | :07:42. | :07:45.
wrong. He had an incredible test out there. He came on like Mr cool, | :07:46. | :07:51.
anti-media horse looked almost a bit too quiet. But he got there and | :07:52. | :07:57.
perform to the test of his life -- to me, the horse looked too quiet. | :07:58. | :08:05.
He has shown that he is back as the William that we know. A big debut | :08:06. | :08:10.
for Gemma Tattersall. She finishes 15. How will she be feeling? | :08:11. | :08:15.
Probably a little frustrated with a couple of mistakes. The horse is | :08:16. | :08:19.
capable of doing much better and getting close to William, in fact. | :08:20. | :08:24.
She went out as number one for the team. It is a tricky spot to be in. | :08:25. | :08:30.
She came back with a good mark. It might not be threatening individual | :08:31. | :08:33.
mark the moment, but cross-country might change that. We have the | :08:34. | :08:38.
individual and team competitions running simultaneously. A good | :08:39. | :08:41.
performance by Australia today, but really strong from Germany. Yeah, | :08:42. | :08:50.
what do you expect? Two world champions and an Olympic champion in | :08:51. | :08:54.
their first two riders. But they are not that far ahead. They are as | :08:55. | :08:58.
close to everywhere else as I have ever seen them at this stage. There | :08:59. | :09:02.
are only a few marks between the top four teams, so it is all to play | :09:03. | :09:10.
for. When we walked the cross-country course, it looks like | :09:11. | :09:14.
it will not be defined by dressage, because -- which it almost has been | :09:15. | :09:20.
in previous Games. I love it. It is not a dressage competition, it is a | :09:21. | :09:25.
good course out there. The course owner has done a fantastic job. He | :09:26. | :09:30.
has probably given it the highest level since May be Sydney in 2000 at | :09:31. | :09:36.
an Olympic Games. It is a proper competition, with tricky lines and | :09:37. | :09:40.
sharp angles. Even the top riders have a lot of respect for it. | :09:41. | :09:45.
Everyone is liking it. The footing of the ground is perfect. The | :09:46. | :09:48.
organisation have done an amazing job. I am looking forward to the | :09:49. | :09:54.
cross-country. I can tell! That starts on Monday. Tomorrow, we have | :09:55. | :09:58.
another 32 dressage tests that will be going on in that arena. From a | :09:59. | :10:03.
British point of view, we have Pippa Funnell, who has three medals to her | :10:04. | :10:08.
name, and Kitty King, who will be making her Olympic debut. | :10:09. | :10:11.
So effectively, it is half-time in that dressage section of the | :10:12. | :10:16.
three-day event. But William Fox-Pitt is in front, a terrific | :10:17. | :10:20.
start for him and Chilli Morning. It will be their last competition | :10:21. | :10:24.
together. The horse will retire after these Olympic Games. Let's | :10:25. | :10:27.
bring you up-to-date on some of the other headlines from day one. | :10:28. | :10:35.
Russia have their first gold medal of these Games. That was in the | :10:36. | :10:50.
men's 60 kilograms judo competition. Argentina's Paolo Barreto, a | :10:51. | :10:53.
qualified doctor, claimed the second judo gold of the day, winning the | :10:54. | :11:01.
women's 48 kilograms category. Now to fencing, and the Hungarian won | :11:02. | :11:17.
the women's FA total. The very first gold medal of these games came in | :11:18. | :11:20.
the women's ten metres air rifle. America took it, Ginny Thrasher | :11:21. | :11:26.
securing a debut major international victory on the biggest stage of all. | :11:27. | :11:32.
Great Britain's men's hockey team had a tough start to these Games. | :11:33. | :11:36.
They lost 4-1 to Belgium in their opening pool match. | :11:37. | :11:45.
But in tennis, Heather Watson and Kyle Edmund both had fabulous starts | :11:46. | :11:52.
to the Olympics. They won their opening-round matches of their | :11:53. | :11:53.
tennis campaigns. Well, I couldn't leave him sitting | :11:54. | :12:30.
on the bench lonely any longer. I felt sorry for him, so I have come | :12:31. | :12:34.
to join James Cracknell to talk about what had taken place in the | :12:35. | :12:38.
rowing today. Before we look at what happened, going into this Olympics, | :12:39. | :12:42.
how much pressure do you think the sport of rowing is under given how | :12:43. | :12:45.
successful it was four years ago and the funding it received? The week | :12:46. | :12:51.
before the Games started, it came out that rowing is the best funded | :12:52. | :12:55.
sport alongside cycling. Your funding is based on the medals you | :12:56. | :12:59.
get here, so we predicted between eight and six medals, and that will | :13:00. | :13:03.
determine our funding for the next four years. So they have to deliver | :13:04. | :13:07.
not only for the money they have received, but also to ensure funding | :13:08. | :13:12.
for the next four years. They are running for the good of their sport. | :13:13. | :13:16.
Exactly, and for the next generation. It is a hugely | :13:17. | :13:21.
pressurised situation for the coach as well because the more medals you | :13:22. | :13:24.
predict, the more funding you get. But if you don't get them, it is | :13:25. | :13:30.
like a game of poker. We will talk about the conditions at Lagoa a bit | :13:31. | :13:34.
later. Let's start by talking about Katherine Grainger, gold medal in | :13:35. | :13:40.
modern. Superstar of those games. Retard, worked with myself and Clare | :13:41. | :13:44.
on our Commonwealth Games show -- she retired, but then decide to go | :13:45. | :13:50.
back to bring. Huge pressure on her as well with Vicky Thornley. They | :13:51. | :13:53.
rode today because they haven't been in great form, is that fair? Yeah. | :13:54. | :14:02.
Katherine Grainger is two years older than Steve Redgrave was in | :14:03. | :14:05.
Sydney. The danger is that if you take to matter years out, you lose | :14:06. | :14:10.
the top dynamic end and it is a struggle to come back. It has not | :14:11. | :14:18.
been the smoothest ride, but Kath was clear from the start that it was | :14:19. | :14:21.
about coming back and seeing what she could deliver rather than | :14:22. | :14:25.
saying, I am going to win gold. They were now be a case of readjusting | :14:26. | :14:32.
her goal set. And Vicky Thornley, yet another rower who was identified | :14:33. | :14:35.
through the sporting Giants programme. She has won all the | :14:36. | :14:45.
trials this year. Sculling is where she was. But if cat and her don't | :14:46. | :14:50.
medal and the women's eight do she had the option at the start of the | :14:51. | :14:54.
year to do either and it would be a sad situation for her because it is | :14:55. | :14:58.
not as though there is another Olympics next year. It is another | :14:59. | :15:02.
four years to put your growing up life on hold. Like Campbell, the | :15:03. | :15:11.
bronze medallist from 2012, he said this feels like a second home games | :15:12. | :15:15.
for him because his father-in-law is from Rio de Janeiro and he is safely | :15:16. | :15:20.
through. He is safely through and the singles is the biggest number. | :15:21. | :15:24.
So he got into the quarterfinal. But it is also the event where you are | :15:25. | :15:37.
the only person to have a good team. Whereas in the singles, they are | :15:38. | :15:40.
from all over the world. Being the best in Britain is not good enough. | :15:41. | :15:44.
You have a lot of countries to race against. | :15:45. | :15:49.
Would you be surprised if it gets on the programme -- on the podium? Yes. | :15:50. | :15:57.
The men's pair finished second in their heat but the men's in the | :15:58. | :16:01.
double sculls, and the men's quadruple sculls will have to | :16:02. | :16:04.
navigate the repechage, both finishing fourth. The doubles is a | :16:05. | :16:09.
tough event with the Croatian brothers RA phenomenon, dominated | :16:10. | :16:13.
the ways in New Zealand guys doing the pair and the men's quad, it is | :16:14. | :16:17.
an event we have never got a medal in at an Olympic Games and we had | :16:18. | :16:21.
not at the World Championships until this group did in 2013-14 but they | :16:22. | :16:28.
have had a change this week. You don't want to lose 25% of your crew | :16:29. | :16:32.
the week before and now they have to not think about, they have a | :16:33. | :16:36.
substitute, not the first choice on board therefore this result is now | :16:37. | :16:39.
acceptable, they have to stick to their goal, a person has changed but | :16:40. | :16:45.
the goal has not. We've had conversations about the conditions | :16:46. | :16:47.
in the build-up, about the wind and you have told me that because rowing | :16:48. | :16:51.
and sailing next to each other, that is never good for the Rovers because | :16:52. | :16:54.
it implies there is wind around and it is not a man-made course, there | :16:55. | :16:58.
are beautiful natural elements around Rio. The real choppy waters | :16:59. | :17:01.
happened midway through the course. It caught out a lot of boats. The | :17:02. | :17:08.
difficulty is, a rowing lake is like a big swimming pool and the outside | :17:09. | :17:11.
lane is only five or ten metres from the side whereas in the middle of | :17:12. | :17:15.
the course, it opens right outcome here, and the wind comes across a | :17:16. | :17:18.
huge expanse of water and today it was hitting you from the side so you | :17:19. | :17:22.
are getting sideswiped and once you are racing flat out, things like | :17:23. | :17:28.
that can happen. You are not only tired and frustrated at falling | :17:29. | :17:31.
income it is a very polluted lake. It is a double whammy! It is all | :17:32. | :17:36.
right for us sitting here in front of some lovely flora and fauna, | :17:37. | :17:39.
laughing a bit at the Serbians falling out of their boat and yet... | :17:40. | :17:45.
I mean, they are so unlucky. You prepare for this for four years and | :17:46. | :17:50.
yet the elements get you like that. You don't want it, it's an outdoor | :17:51. | :17:56.
sport. It is not their error, is it? Partly in that, that the new or | :17:57. | :18:01.
rests in is called the gate and you need to shut the gate and they did | :18:02. | :18:05.
not do it uptight enough because the box open. There was an open gate | :18:06. | :18:10.
whenever boat was upside down and it does not open on its own. You are | :18:11. | :18:13.
thinking about racing and other things you go on autopilot of | :18:14. | :18:16.
putting it in, you've done it a million times and maybe they | :18:17. | :18:19.
tightened it up but it was not quite shot and then when the boat is | :18:20. | :18:22.
wobbling around like that, it pops out and you are going summing. Thank | :18:23. | :18:27.
you to James Cracknell and I ought to emphasise James Cracknell because | :18:28. | :18:30.
when you flew out here you were mistaken for...? A bad check-in | :18:31. | :18:35.
experience because Chris Hoy was ahead of me and I thought it was my | :18:36. | :18:39.
chance and then the lady at the desk was being really nice to me and I | :18:40. | :18:42.
thought brilliant, gave my passport and she said she thought I was | :18:43. | :18:47.
Gordon Ramsay! We will see you James, or is it Gordon, for the next | :18:48. | :18:51.
few nights as we round up everything that has gone on. We are now going | :18:52. | :18:55.
to the gymnastics, just like the rowing, a sport you have to be very | :18:56. | :18:56.
fit for. Max Whitlock, who last year in | :18:57. | :19:31.
Glasgow, became the very first British man to win a World | :19:32. | :19:35.
Championship as a gymnast, beating his team-mate Louis Smith in the | :19:36. | :19:39.
pommel horse. Both of them are part of the very strong British team that | :19:40. | :19:42.
includes Kristian Thomas and also Brinn Bevan and Nile Wilson. They | :19:43. | :19:46.
were in preliminary action today and this is how they got on. | :19:47. | :19:53.
COMMENTATOR: Next up on the floor, Kristian Thomas. Brinn Bevan for | :19:54. | :19:59.
Britain. Here comes Louis Smith of Great Britain. Nile Wilson leads. | :20:00. | :20:02.
Max Whitlock. Big, beautiful triple, what a first | :20:03. | :20:19.
routine from Max Whitlock. Up into the dismount, double Arabian, what a | :20:20. | :20:24.
routine from Kristian Thomas. Now is your moment, Louis. Fantastic stuff | :20:25. | :20:35.
from Louis Smith! Top scorer so far. The world champion, Max Whitlock, | :20:36. | :20:38.
moves to the pommel horse. What about that! What a routine, two of | :20:39. | :20:44.
the most fantastic routines you will see from the British guys. The one | :20:45. | :20:47.
and only. Mighty Max onto the rings. Wow, what | :20:48. | :21:04.
a routine from Max, under pressure. What a job by Nile Wilson. Really | :21:05. | :21:09.
nice routine from him, he's becoming a very powerful gymnast. The first | :21:10. | :21:14.
of the Brits on the vault, Max Whitlock. Oh, and a fall at the end | :21:15. | :21:22.
of it. Well done, Max. Great routine from | :21:23. | :21:48.
Max. Just one apparatus to go. You can see the focus in their eyes. | :21:49. | :21:58.
Great routine from Brinn Bevan. Very nice. So, the USA on the rings, | :21:59. | :22:03.
Jacob Dalton. Very efficient routine. The USA team that very | :22:04. | :22:11.
happy with the situation they are in. -- look very. Nile Wilson. Keep | :22:12. | :22:21.
focused. Beautiful dismount! Well done, we really needed a performance | :22:22. | :22:24.
like that at the end of the competition. It wasn't without | :22:25. | :22:30.
faults, this performance from the British team, but it was certainly | :22:31. | :22:34.
full of excitement and full of promise. | :22:35. | :22:40.
Beth Tweddle is alongside me and you is impossible when you are in the | :22:41. | :22:45.
then to know what on earth is going outside so you are quite enjoying | :22:46. | :22:47.
catching up on the other sports but tell everyone at home how strong | :22:48. | :22:52.
British men look today. They looked to have had a great start to their | :22:53. | :22:56.
competition. We have qualified for the team final. We're waiting for | :22:57. | :22:59.
the last round to finish but that should confirm we have two in the | :23:00. | :23:03.
all-around, two in the pommel final, maybe one in the floor and hopefully | :23:04. | :23:07.
one in the high bar. They've had a good day. There were mistakes they | :23:08. | :23:12.
can iron out for the team final. I was quite impressed with Nile Wilson | :23:13. | :23:15.
on the high bar, you look so pumped and by that stage, he knew he needed | :23:16. | :23:20.
a good performance. Yes, it was the last piece that it could go either | :23:21. | :23:23.
way, you could be a bit tired but he had settled into the competition and | :23:24. | :23:27.
seem to get better throughout. He posted a huge score, 15.5. Nile | :23:28. | :23:33.
Wilson, we were talking about them but Max Whitlock and Louis Smith | :23:34. | :23:36.
look almost certainly between them, that one of them will win a gold | :23:37. | :23:40.
medal in the pommel. At the moment, does it look as though Max has the | :23:41. | :23:45.
advantage? It is difficult, the aim was to get them both through to the | :23:46. | :23:49.
final, which we have done. We would hope that one of them could take the | :23:50. | :23:54.
title. But you know what? Gymnastics is one of those things that anything | :23:55. | :23:57.
can happen on the day. We will have to wait and see for the final. At | :23:58. | :24:02.
the moment, Max has been beating Louis all season. I talk to Louis a | :24:03. | :24:07.
couple of weeks ago, went to see him at the gym in Huntingdon and I think | :24:08. | :24:10.
he is still so sore that he did not win the gold medal in London but Max | :24:11. | :24:14.
is full of confidence because his experiences have all been positive, | :24:15. | :24:18.
you know, he's the guy who is the world champion, who comes in knowing | :24:19. | :24:22.
he can beat everyone. Max went to London as the youngster of the team | :24:23. | :24:25.
and was not necessarily expecting a medal and he came out with a bronze. | :24:26. | :24:29.
I don't think he really understood what he had achieved and then | :24:30. | :24:33.
throughout this cycle, he has progressed massively and grown in | :24:34. | :24:37.
confidence and then it was a real battle at the World Championships. | :24:38. | :24:41.
Louis came out and posted a huge score and Max was in the back gym, | :24:42. | :24:44.
did not know anything and then when he came through, it was like, | :24:45. | :24:48.
"Right, I've got to pull out the routine of my life", and beat him by | :24:49. | :24:52.
a tenth but we have the two best pommel workers in the world going | :24:53. | :24:56.
head-to-head. Would you say that's a guaranteed gold medal or let's just | :24:57. | :24:58.
enjoy it? It is a case of enjoyed it. They have their | :24:59. | :25:18.
foot in the door, they've got to the final. They have obviously got the | :25:19. | :25:20.
team final ahead of that. Let's take it one step at a time. We were | :25:21. | :25:23.
talking about Nile Wilson on the high bar and we can look at him in | :25:24. | :25:26.
action, talk through what he's got and the upper body strength required | :25:27. | :25:28.
for this. He has progressed really well, sometimes it can be quite a | :25:29. | :25:32.
big jump but he has taken it in his stride. He was European champion | :25:33. | :25:34.
earlier this year and the first skill that he does, the straight | :25:35. | :25:36.
double somersault with a full twist is one of the most difficult | :25:37. | :25:39.
elements you will see on the high bar. And then he does it again in | :25:40. | :25:42.
the tuck position. This routine is full of difficulty, both turning and | :25:43. | :25:45.
also lots and lots of releases. And at the end, he does some more | :25:46. | :25:49.
releases which you can connect. There are things... There was a | :25:50. | :25:54.
slight wobble and he can improve the final. To post 15.5 is a huge | :25:55. | :26:00.
qualification score. He's got a few days now to go back in the gym and | :26:01. | :26:05.
work on it. Was their big support in the arena? Were people very | :26:06. | :26:08.
knowledgeable and knew how good what they were watching was? Yes, | :26:09. | :26:12.
throughout the day the crowds have grown massively and the noise is | :26:13. | :26:16.
incredible. This morning, we had the Brazilian team in and as soon as | :26:17. | :26:20.
they stepped onto the podium, it went mental. They have got the | :26:21. | :26:24.
current Olympic champion as well. Their team did unbelievable today. I | :26:25. | :26:27.
think the crowds will get better in that arena and they are very | :26:28. | :26:31.
knowledgeable. Gymnastics is quite big in Brazil. In terms of the team | :26:32. | :26:35.
competition, what are you expecting from the men of Team GB? The team we | :26:36. | :26:40.
have brought out is the strongest we've ever had. They have gone with | :26:41. | :26:44.
some of the big hitters. We have got risk their and with risk, with the | :26:45. | :26:49.
strong routines, there is a risk but without that, we weren't going to | :26:50. | :26:54.
win medals. They have gone all out. We won a bronze in London and they | :26:55. | :27:00.
wanted to replicate that, they came second in the World Championships | :27:01. | :27:03.
last year which was a historic moment. We will see what happens. | :27:04. | :27:07.
Two massive names in gymnastic, well, more than two but Kohei Uchima | :27:08. | :27:13.
has already made headlines because he has run up a massive bill on his | :27:14. | :27:18.
mobile phone by playing Pokemon and the quotes range from ?3000, to | :27:19. | :27:24.
?24,000 but his Games has not been any better. What happened here? He | :27:25. | :27:30.
had a shaky start on the high bar, he just was not quite on and fell | :27:31. | :27:34.
off but he is such an experienced competitor. He came back from that, | :27:35. | :27:37.
went straight to the floor and did a fantastic routine and is in the | :27:38. | :27:41.
floor final. He's got plenty of time. He has won every major title | :27:42. | :27:48.
since 2008. He's got so much experience. Tomorrow, the women and | :27:49. | :27:51.
teen USA, we have been hearing aid you vocal fans going by, they don't | :27:52. | :27:56.
just rely on this goal, they idolise Simone Biles. How many different | :27:57. | :28:03.
events could she win? So, she could win five gold medals at this | :28:04. | :28:07.
Championships. Has it ever been done before? I think it might have been | :28:08. | :28:12.
but I'd have to. She's in a league of her own. Team USA for the | :28:13. | :28:16.
gymnastics but I watched them in podium training the other day and | :28:17. | :28:21.
they are just way above everyone else. They could have a couple of | :28:22. | :28:24.
mistakes and still come out with the team gold medal and then Simone, | :28:25. | :28:28.
last year and the World Championships, we saw a slight | :28:29. | :28:34.
wobble but I mean, I don't think she will be beaten. Even when she | :28:35. | :28:37.
wobbles, she is very good. Thank you for coming to donors, Beth, I hope | :28:38. | :28:42.
you will join us tomorrow when we reflect on the women's preliminary | :28:43. | :28:45.
round and see how the British women get on. Thanks to better than | :28:46. | :28:48.
everyone else on the programme. Jason Mohammad is coming up next | :28:49. | :28:51.
with a fabulous night of action including the first night of | :28:52. | :28:54.
swimming finals. For now, from me, goodbye. | :28:55. | :28:57. |
