Hello and welcome to Rio Replay, highlights of the action from

:00:51.:01:00.

yesterday at the Rio Olympic Games, this is what we have in store for

:01:01.:01:01.

you today. We will be live to see if taekwondo

:01:02.:01:13.

player Jade Jones can defend her 57 kilograms title, she fights at 2am

:01:14.:01:22.

against a very tough Spanish rival. Usain Bolt, meanwhile, wants to take

:01:23.:01:25.

his tally to eight in the 200 metres final.

:01:26.:01:32.

Canada's Ondrej Duda grass might have something to say about that,

:01:33.:01:34.

however. She will line up in the same

:01:35.:02:12.

semifinal as the overwhelming And Charlie Grice takes to the track

:02:13.:02:15.

in the 1,500m semifinals. We have got so much sport for you

:02:16.:02:31.

this evening, but we cannot wait for the athletics, let's join the team

:02:32.:02:33.

at the stadium. Will be all about Michael

:02:34.:03:08.

Johnson at the front. The world record beckons

:03:09.:03:13.

and it's gone! He takes it and Michael Johnson's

:03:14.:03:18.

record has gone. Time certainly is a very big factor

:03:19.:03:27.

in this sport, and I hope you're going to have a very good time

:03:28.:03:44.

tonight, because we have a fantastic And I'm delighted that Paula

:03:45.:03:47.

and Denise and Michael are alongside me to enjoy it,

:03:48.:03:50.

and if you could pick one thing tonight looking forward to, Michael,

:03:51.:03:54.

what is it going to be? I'm looking forward

:03:55.:03:57.

to the 200m race that's for those other medals,

:03:58.:04:00.

and it's going to be interesting. That's the problem with Bolt -

:04:01.:04:08.

if there's a problem with him he takes attention away and sucks up

:04:09.:04:14.

all the air in the room. But there are other guys

:04:15.:04:18.

there who want a medal. We'll look at your analysis

:04:19.:04:20.

in a bit of time. Denise? I think for me the other great

:04:21.:04:30.

athlete that will be finishing tonight is Ashton Eaton in the men's

:04:31.:04:33.

decathlon, he's one of the unsung We got a huge character like Usain,

:04:34.:04:36.

but he's on for another Olympic medal and he has had

:04:37.:04:42.

a gruelling two days for these guys. They had no time to stop and breathe

:04:43.:04:45.

and take in just how It would be nice to see him get

:04:46.:04:49.

decorated tonight. Paula? There's all the things

:04:50.:04:56.

we have talked about. The women's 400m hurdles final,

:04:57.:04:59.

and I think also women's 800m semifinals and men's

:05:00.:05:01.

1,500m semifinals. I want to see our guys and girls

:05:02.:05:04.

move through those tough semifinals. OK. Let's put that all into context

:05:05.:05:10.

for you and show you how the evening

:05:11.:05:12.

is shaping up. The roar you heard behind me

:05:13.:05:17.

there were for the men in the men's shot put final being introduced

:05:18.:05:21.

to the crowd. At 12:45 it's those semifinals that

:05:22.:05:26.

Paula was talking about. Charlie Grice

:05:27.:05:28.

and Chris O'Hare going in that. The women's javelin finals

:05:29.:05:30.

going from 1:10, And the decathlon comes

:05:31.:05:32.

to a dramatic - it always is. They do look like the wounded

:05:33.:05:44.

warriors when they go And the women's hurdles finals

:05:45.:05:46.

with Doyle in the line-up at 2:15. And then there's the small matter

:05:47.:05:51.

of Usain Bolt attempting to win his However, there is also a Jade Jones

:05:52.:05:55.

going and her fight is - her gold medal fight is at 2 o'clock

:05:56.:06:02.

in the morning. So we will be going over

:06:03.:06:06.

there and you will get that live here on BBC One -

:06:07.:06:08.

have no fear. But, of course, that 200m

:06:09.:06:11.

is the one for the evening, potentially the last time

:06:12.:06:15.

we will see Usain Bolt running a 200m, certainly

:06:16.:06:20.

an Olympic 200m. Through the ages there have been

:06:21.:06:22.

some classic 200m races. Let's have a walk

:06:23.:06:28.

back in the archives. There they go,

:06:29.:06:30.

there's Bobby Smithers. Smith demonstrating clearly

:06:31.:07:02.

to the world there that he is They got away have smoothly, and

:07:03.:07:05.

look at him, Carl Lewis is away. Carl Lewis leading and being

:07:06.:07:44.

chased by the Brazilian. Lane six is Boulton

:07:45.:07:46.

and Fredericks but it's Johnson. They get away and left

:07:47.:08:17.

in the blocks of USA, Bolden just in the lead

:08:18.:08:34.

as they come into the bend. He's going to get there,

:08:35.:08:41.

and Bolden probably third. Away they go, and Usain Bolt

:08:42.:08:47.

already going past as if he wasn't there,

:08:48.:09:05.

blasting around that top end, Bold, Dicks running

:09:06.:09:12.

into second place. Trying to hang on to

:09:13.:09:13.

the tall Jamaican. It's a clean start, Bolt is out

:09:14.:09:17.

of the start really well. It's a three metres lead and they're

:09:18.:09:36.

coming to the home straight. We were saying to you just

:09:37.:09:42.

a bit earlier - I love the 200m. I think more than the 100m

:09:43.:10:03.

because of the bend and because it's a bit longer and you get

:10:04.:10:06.

to enjoy it a bit longer, but also it's got those gear changes

:10:07.:10:09.

that make it a bit more - You can sit back and enjoy it a bit

:10:10.:10:13.

longer than you can than the 100m. We're sitting here, you can.

:10:14.:10:20.

But you can enjoy the 200m. It's a beautiful event,

:10:21.:10:30.

like you said, coming around the bend, gives it a bit

:10:31.:10:36.

more visual interest, and, you know, how you actually

:10:37.:10:38.

transition from running around the bend on to the straight,

:10:39.:10:41.

two completely different components of the race in terms

:10:42.:10:43.

of biomechanics. Let's look at the racers,

:10:44.:10:45.

but also at Bolt as well. because there's some news

:10:46.:10:49.

developing in the decathlon. The penultimate event

:10:50.:10:56.

of the decathlon is the javelin, there's Kevin Mayer of France,

:10:57.:11:02.

having the event of his life. This is the first-round throw,

:11:03.:11:09.

it was his best. Absolutely smashed it

:11:10.:11:14.

across the two days. Five lifetime bests

:11:15.:11:19.

coming into this javelin. Lifetime best is 66m,

:11:20.:11:21.

he's just shy of that. He's going to break the French

:11:22.:11:26.

record quite comfortably. So Ashton Eaton absolutely superb

:11:27.:11:33.

across the two days as well. It hasn't been the runaway victory

:11:34.:11:46.

that many talked about, but it's been convincing,

:11:47.:11:51.

his coach there, Harry, behind. Round three was his best - big

:11:52.:11:55.

scream from the reigning champion. And that would be enough

:11:56.:12:00.

just to keep him in the lead, but Mayer closing down the gap, five

:12:01.:12:11.

metres difference, the Frenchman. Five metres better than Eaton's best

:12:12.:12:18.

in that third round. The man currently in third place

:12:19.:12:29.

overall is Damian Warner of Canada. And his best was also

:12:30.:12:32.

in the third round. Took him the three throws to get him

:12:33.:12:37.

over the 60m mark. So it looks as though

:12:38.:12:53.

the medals are maybe set Long couple of days and Warner may

:12:54.:12:57.

have toll settle for a bronze. Just the 1500m to decide

:12:58.:13:05.

where the medals are Once all the points were tallied,

:13:06.:13:07.

put in the system, there you can see

:13:08.:13:18.

the total points after nine events. Ashton Eaton, as anticipated, out

:13:19.:13:24.

in front but only a 44-point lead over Kevin Mayer, and that equates

:13:25.:13:29.

to about 6.5 seconds over 1500m. Ahead of

:13:30.:13:32.

Warner, just the 1500m left. Is there any danger that Ashton

:13:33.:13:38.

Eaton might not retain this gold? I don't think so.

:13:39.:13:45.

I mean, if he has to run for it, he really will,

:13:46.:13:49.

and he's capable of doing that. Let's not jinx him.

:13:50.:13:52.

Going to be very exciting. Going to be a rate,

:13:53.:13:54.

not a formality, though. No, gone are the days when you see

:13:55.:13:58.

the likes of Dally Thompson This will be a proper race,

:13:59.:14:03.

I can guarantee it. because he didn't

:14:04.:14:08.

have much of a 1500m. I can say that,

:14:09.:14:13.

because he's not here! Let's go back to the 200m

:14:14.:14:15.

and have a look at Bolt. I know you've got some

:14:16.:14:20.

analysis to look for us. For Bolt, this was interesting

:14:21.:14:23.

in his semifinal, we didn't see the interaction with the crowd

:14:24.:14:26.

and the jubilant nature that he normally displays,

:14:27.:14:30.

this was yesterday morning. Bolt told us before

:14:31.:14:33.

he's not a morning person, and I expected him to come off

:14:34.:14:35.

a little bit more of a lead here. but not much over

:14:36.:14:41.

Andre De Grasse there. And Adam Gemili,

:14:42.:14:46.

he opens it up a little bit De Grasse actually pushed him

:14:47.:14:48.

to the finish line and there was a bit of playing around

:14:49.:14:54.

and that sort of thing going on, but this ended up actually impacting

:14:55.:14:57.

the final that we're going to see tonight because De Grasse

:14:58.:15:02.

ends up in lane four, with both of his main rivals

:15:03.:15:06.

being Andre De Grasse and LaShawn Merritt

:15:07.:15:11.

on the inside of him. But he just wasn't in a real best,

:15:12.:15:15.

you know, mood yesterday and he said He turned down the volume

:15:16.:15:32.

on the razzmatazz. That was interesting to see

:15:33.:15:40.

and he commented afterwards he felt a little tired, didn't feel

:15:41.:15:43.

the pop he normally does. But based on what we saw earlier

:15:44.:15:46.

today on the warm-up track, Yeah, the girls might

:15:47.:15:49.

have seen that. He was - Michael was chatting

:15:50.:15:54.

earlier with Mark Chapman and Usain Probably some sort of

:15:55.:15:57.

reggae getting his body You can tell us what you think,

:15:58.:16:11.

Denise, when you see the moves He's going to need it around

:16:12.:16:17.

those bends, isn't he. Let's move on to

:16:18.:16:26.

LaShawn Merritt who, of course, got the bronze

:16:27.:16:33.

in the 400m, he was disappointed with that, but he's let the world

:16:34.:16:36.

know he's here for this 200m. I don't know how disappointed

:16:37.:16:40.

he actually was with the 400m. He wanted to win it, after,

:16:41.:16:42.

you know, a world record was run, he probably wasn't as disappointed

:16:43.:16:49.

but I think he's turned his Got the fastest time in the world

:16:50.:16:52.

this year still, and he ran very well here and using that 400m

:16:53.:16:58.

strength that he has, he doesn't blaze around the turn

:16:59.:17:02.

like you might see a Usain Bolt do, but he's able to run a really good

:17:03.:17:05.

solid race from start to finish, using that strength,

:17:06.:17:09.

he's very powerful, and very tough - He believes in himself,

:17:10.:17:11.

he knows he can run longer than anyone else in the race

:17:12.:17:19.

because of his 400m prowess, a 400m man, and this goes back

:17:20.:17:25.

to high school and college. He actually ran the

:17:26.:17:28.

200m in high school. So you know, he has that experience

:17:29.:17:32.

and he will - he will see this as an opportunity to do something

:17:33.:17:36.

special in the sport - We will talk more

:17:37.:17:38.

about the 200m later. Look at the other contenders

:17:39.:17:41.

in the field, including And Paula, there's Charlie Grice out

:17:42.:17:43.

there for the first Lucky to be there in

:17:44.:17:48.

many ways. Ingebrigtsen deserved

:17:49.:17:51.

to be disqualified. He needs to run his best here today

:17:52.:18:00.

because it is a tough semifinal. Well, he has another

:18:01.:18:05.

role of the dice. Steve Cram and Brendan Foster

:18:06.:18:07.

are your commentators for this one. This isn't going to be easy

:18:08.:18:13.

for Charlie Grice Charlie in this first one

:18:14.:18:15.

and Philip Ingebrigtsen, the younger brother

:18:16.:18:27.

of Henrik Ingebrigtsen, in fact, all although Henrik

:18:28.:18:31.

Ingebrigtsen is more well-known, Charlie was fading badly

:18:32.:18:33.

and probably a bit fortunate So let's look at the shot

:18:34.:18:44.

put, though, Steve. Early lead, the competitor from

:18:45.:19:05.

Congo. Around the Olympic Stadium,

:19:06.:19:10.

the big men are out and they want The shot put final

:19:11.:19:25.

going on, of course. Lots of names you'll recognise,

:19:26.:19:49.

Nick Willis, Ingebrigtsen, getting Seurei is in here, former Kenyan

:19:50.:19:51.

running for Bahrain, And the champion from

:19:52.:19:57.

2008 and the champion Add people in there

:19:58.:20:05.

like Blankenship. They're always going to be,

:20:06.:20:14.

the 1,500m semifinals, we saw with the women,

:20:15.:20:26.

the standard how high it is. Makhloufi won a silver medal

:20:27.:20:29.

in the 800m could well challenge. So Kiprop, though,

:20:30.:20:31.

looks a little nervous. They will trust their pace

:20:32.:20:33.

at the end. That's why they're in

:20:34.:20:36.

the semifinal including Charlie, he's got to put what happened

:20:37.:20:43.

in the heats to Ingebrigtsen, European champion back

:20:44.:20:45.

in Olympic year 2012. Nick Willis, well,

:20:46.:20:58.

he sashayed his way. And Iguider can finish

:20:59.:21:01.

quickly as well. And this man can be very

:21:02.:21:06.

dangerous in the rounds, he doesn't have the -

:21:07.:21:11.

such quick times although he has run a new national record

:21:12.:21:14.

this year of 3:33.36. But the Czech Republic competitor

:21:15.:21:18.

can sprint as well. As ever, we'll see them sprint off

:21:19.:21:24.

the line and then just curious as to see whether anybody really

:21:25.:21:38.

wants to settle and make Ingebrigtsen at the back,

:21:39.:21:40.

didn't sprint off the line. Little bit of a jog,

:21:41.:21:46.

if you think back to the women's 1,500m final, it

:21:47.:21:56.

became an 800m race. Grice learnt a lesson in the heats

:21:57.:21:57.

that everybody can sprint. So sometimes - I don't think Charlie

:21:58.:22:03.

will want to go to the front, of course he won't, but just has

:22:04.:22:06.

to be really aware, get himself in the best position possible

:22:07.:22:09.

when they get in the last two laps. After watching him the other day

:22:10.:22:15.

in the first round and that - I thought he was fading

:22:16.:22:18.

in the later stages. You got two Olympic champions,

:22:19.:22:21.

you got two Olympic medallists. And there's only five to go

:22:22.:22:26.

through and the first lap has been 63 seconds, so they're now

:22:27.:22:34.

beginning to move along. I think the faster race

:22:35.:22:37.

will suit Charlie Grice but there he is settling down,

:22:38.:22:41.

at least they're going at a reasonable pace,

:22:42.:22:43.

that means less problems, going to get less trouble

:22:44.:22:47.

bumping into one another. And Kiprop at the back,

:22:48.:22:51.

probably the favourite. He is the favourite

:22:52.:22:54.

but Makhloufi is in there, They're all medallists in the 1,500m

:22:55.:22:56.

in the Olympic Games. Normally they start to speed up

:22:57.:23:04.

here because they went fast then slowed again,

:23:05.:23:26.

this is now going to become as ever a big sprint

:23:27.:23:28.

over the last 5 or 600m. This is the lap he needs to get

:23:29.:23:31.

himself in a better place than that. It will be fast and fast and fast,

:23:32.:23:36.

and he's got to make his move. Down the back straight,

:23:37.:23:43.

Charlie Grice on the inside. who are faster than him,

:23:44.:23:46.

surrounded by people who have run Going to have to do

:23:47.:23:51.

an awful amount of work. Needs a bit of a break

:23:52.:23:57.

to get lucky here. He's in a bad spot there,

:23:58.:24:01.

but you can't panic now. Too many bodies around,

:24:02.:24:04.

as Seurei is the first to break Charlie just dipped

:24:05.:24:06.

back inside there. Following Nick Willis as they come

:24:07.:24:09.

around to take the bell. They come to the bell

:24:10.:24:13.

and here comes Asbel Kiprop, former Olympic champion

:24:14.:24:18.

on the outside. You can see them lining

:24:19.:24:19.

across three abreast. Right in the middle there

:24:20.:24:25.

is Charlie Grice as they go That was faster, and now

:24:26.:24:27.

they're really stretching. Kiprop gliding down the back

:24:28.:24:32.

straight, Blankenship moves, Charlie Grice looking for some room

:24:33.:24:40.

on the inside and he gets it. Can't be guaranteed

:24:41.:24:43.

a time at this place. Charlie Grice is going

:24:44.:24:50.

to have to dig deep. Makhloufi, Willis, Blankenship,

:24:51.:24:57.

Iguider, Charlie Grice fifth. He may have been fortunate

:24:58.:25:08.

to make it through. What he didn't do is,

:25:09.:25:18.

as I said to the bell, is not panic. He realised he was in

:25:19.:25:25.

a not good position, and when you're in that position,

:25:26.:25:27.

you cross your fingers and you hope, two things happen

:25:28.:25:34.

for him, he's managed to sneak

:25:35.:25:39.

through, past at 200 to go. If that had been blocked off,

:25:40.:25:41.

he was finished. If Blankenship had not finished

:25:42.:25:44.

as strongly in the home straight, then Charlie would have struggled

:25:45.:25:46.

as well to recover from. And John, his coach, they must have

:25:47.:25:49.

been nervous the other day. They had some doubts

:25:50.:26:00.

about him the other day. Into the Olympic final,

:26:01.:26:02.

got to be delighted with that. His strength, is probably better

:26:03.:26:05.

than his speed, but there they go. As Steve was saying

:26:06.:26:14.

during commentary, he never got He's in amongst the runners

:26:15.:26:16.

all around him, a push there which gave him a bit

:26:17.:26:19.

of a chance, a bit of a fortunate move through on the inside and look

:26:20.:26:23.

how far behind Kiprop is. As they stretch there now,

:26:24.:26:26.

as Kiprop, four runners abreast at this point,

:26:27.:26:28.

down the back straight, Blankenship on the bend,

:26:29.:26:30.

Kiprop on his shoulder and there the Olympic champion,

:26:31.:26:36.

Makhloufi alongside him, so there's no shortage

:26:37.:26:38.

of talent there. Certainly isn't, but there

:26:39.:26:46.

is a determination in Charlie Grice. Look at that one - very,

:26:47.:26:49.

very lucky there to get He comes quickly there,

:26:50.:26:51.

Kiprop coasting, Makhloufi coasting, here comes Willis on the outside

:26:52.:26:55.

and Blankenship just leaning forward and Charlie Grice,

:26:56.:26:58.

he wasn't sure about it, but he was fifth in that one,

:26:59.:27:05.

that was in the first five But on the inside,

:27:06.:27:08.

Charlie Grice seeing his chance, That's why he's trained

:27:09.:27:13.

so hard - to get there. Makhloufi and Kiprop,

:27:14.:27:21.

two Olympic champions ahead of him. Well done Charlie Grice and he's

:27:22.:27:25.

downstairs there talking with Phil. A big well done from

:27:26.:27:29.

Brendan and Steve. To come fifth place,

:27:30.:27:32.

when the pace was slow, I was kind of a bit nervous,

:27:33.:27:42.

but I knew my speed was good and I ran awful on Tuesday,

:27:43.:27:46.

I don't know what happened. I just told myself to stay patient

:27:47.:27:49.

and, yeah, glad I redeemed myself, I think the key there

:27:50.:27:52.

was not to panic. I mean, it was a definitely

:27:53.:27:58.

a fight of a finish there, but I told myself to stay

:27:59.:28:06.

on the inside, and a few times - people were cutting in and stuff

:28:07.:28:09.

so I was glad I stayed on my feet. Olympic finalist, can you take

:28:10.:28:21.

it in? So, yeah, on to the

:28:22.:28:22.

final in two days. So rest up and going

:28:23.:28:26.

to be a cracker. Well done, Charlie, we wish you well

:28:27.:28:28.

for the final. So by six hundredths

:28:29.:28:31.

of a second, that's all. There you see the results -

:28:32.:28:39.

top five only to go through and that They would have seen that,

:28:40.:28:43.

they can go faster, Looking forward to see

:28:44.:28:46.

what this man can do, Ryan Crouser, US champion, he's 6ft

:28:47.:28:57.

7 and he rotates in the shot. Ryan Crouser in the second

:28:58.:29:00.

round of the shot put, his team-mate - Kovacs -

:29:01.:29:06.

in the lead at the That almost certainly -

:29:07.:29:10.

well it's beyond it. Crouser - inexperienced,

:29:11.:29:18.

no previous form to talk Just given everyone something to

:29:19.:29:24.

talk about. Kiprop looked good in that first

:29:25.:29:30.

heat who was the strong favourite. And they have another

:29:31.:29:41.

contender here, Kenya. Should have had two in here,

:29:42.:29:44.

but Elijah Motonei Manangoi is out Bronze over 800 in the world

:29:45.:29:47.

champions, he's got A junior world record

:29:48.:29:55.

holder with 3.28.21 That was exactly the same

:29:56.:30:27.

mark as Mo Farah. Ryan Gregson, the Australian

:30:28.:30:31.

champion, showed very good speed And Matthew Centrowitz Jr

:30:32.:30:34.

world indoor champion. Fourth in the Olympic

:30:35.:30:51.

final in London. But Chris O'Hare, he's called

:30:52.:30:59.

himself a bit of a terrier, he'll be O'Hare five from the front

:31:00.:31:02.

there and immediately taken out And in behind is Centrowitz

:31:03.:31:19.

and the Spaniard as well, Bustos. Here, we talk about tactics

:31:20.:31:31.

in the 1500, and perhaps Grice doesn't get it right,

:31:32.:31:33.

but has great speed. He always seems to get

:31:34.:31:38.

the tactics right. I tell you what - it means seven

:31:39.:31:42.

of these athletes could go through, every one of these athletes has

:31:43.:31:56.

run faster than 3.40, that's immediately a little bit

:31:57.:31:59.

quicker than in the first round. In the middle there,

:32:00.:32:01.

having an easy run there, having a nice position,

:32:02.:32:05.

which seems to be less crowding there, as they go faster,

:32:06.:32:07.

coming through there with 59.6. This is a big advantage

:32:08.:32:10.

for this field. I think all seven of these

:32:11.:32:19.

could come from the two fastest losers and the five

:32:20.:32:21.

could come from this heat. A big advantage as Kwemoi

:32:22.:32:24.

comes to the front. Manangoi has been ruled out

:32:25.:32:27.

with a hamstring injury. You could get seven going

:32:28.:32:30.

through from this one. The Canadian just steadying

:32:31.:32:40.

himself with the arm. then they were in

:32:41.:32:42.

the first semifinal. Running a good race

:32:43.:32:46.

here, Chris O'Hare. Just on the outside on the shoulder

:32:47.:32:51.

of Centrowitz, who I would be sure

:32:52.:32:54.

would be qualifying from this one. Steady running,

:32:55.:32:56.

it's not hard running, pretty steady, probably a little

:32:57.:32:58.

slower than Chris O'Hare. Now deciding he wants

:32:59.:33:01.

to take a bit closer. He's going to put himself

:33:02.:33:04.

in with a chance of being and producing that finish and this

:33:05.:33:09.

is a good run from Chris O'Hare. And it's pretty much the same

:33:10.:33:12.

as the first one. They have slowed it down

:33:13.:33:17.

a bit, just inside that. So perhaps might not be two fastest

:33:18.:33:22.

losers going through. Centrowitz just realises

:33:23.:33:26.

and edges forward. Sixth place at the moment

:33:27.:33:29.

with Chris O'Hare. Just easing his way

:33:30.:33:34.

on the inside of the runner. He is in a good position,

:33:35.:33:43.

looks as though they're increasing their

:33:44.:33:47.

options of qualifying. Chris O'Hare doing well

:33:48.:33:51.

and following Centrowitz. So as they hit the bell,

:33:52.:33:56.

it's Suleman out the front. Just that little bit

:33:57.:34:02.

of extra distance to run. A little bit bumped but I think he's

:34:03.:34:06.

now perfectly poised. If he's got the sprint finish,

:34:07.:34:13.

we know he has, First five to go

:34:14.:34:16.

through automatically. They're all bunched up again,

:34:17.:34:21.

and so many in contention. This is where he likes

:34:22.:34:23.

to go from, 250m out. Round the bend, gritting his teeth

:34:24.:34:27.

and digging in and setting that job. Nobody shows the effort

:34:28.:34:30.

more than O'Hare. O'Hare goes at it again

:34:31.:34:32.

and doesn't have it in the legs. Suleman is there and Kwemoi

:34:33.:34:46.

and Gregson and the second It was Robbie Andrews

:34:47.:34:48.

for the fifth place. And O'Hare had nothing

:34:49.:34:55.

down the home straight, A man who's been to the finals

:34:56.:34:58.

of the World Championships, desperately wanted to get

:34:59.:35:04.

to the final of an Olympic Games. But despite giving everything,

:35:05.:35:09.

as he always does, and he puts himself

:35:10.:35:13.

in the right positions, but he just didn't have

:35:14.:35:15.

the speed in the legs. He didn't do anything wrong

:35:16.:35:17.

in that race. He was perfectly poised

:35:18.:35:19.

at every point. He matched the pace,

:35:20.:35:23.

which really wasn't quick. But there, a sad figure

:35:24.:35:26.

of Chris O'Hare, one of this large Scottish contingent

:35:27.:35:33.

presenting Great Britain here. He knows the Olympic final

:35:34.:35:39.

was a real potential for him, and sadly he's not

:35:40.:35:41.

going to experience it. Centrowitz is following him

:35:42.:35:50.

in a good place all the time. Here, Chris O'Hare is

:35:51.:35:57.

perfectly positioned. the pace was strong enough

:35:58.:35:59.

at this point. And then just a little bit

:36:00.:36:04.

in the back straight, a little bit of fading

:36:05.:36:08.

there from Chris O'Hare, and I wonder if that's

:36:09.:36:11.

sudden acceleration actually is why he paid the price

:36:12.:36:20.

in the home straight. And at that point, Chris O'Hare,

:36:21.:36:22.

you might have bet on him at this point, but no,

:36:23.:36:26.

into the point, and then suddenly, it's gone and when it goes

:36:27.:36:29.

like that, the legs have gone, the fatigue is setting in,

:36:30.:36:32.

that burst of speed I think he's paid the price for Gregson

:36:33.:36:36.

of Australia coming through, A couple of other things to look out

:36:37.:36:40.

for - see Robbie Andrews there, he just about stepped on the rail

:36:41.:36:46.

on the inside of the track, as he was trying to come down,

:36:47.:36:55.

just watch him here on the inside. He's trying to get

:36:56.:36:58.

around Gebremedhin. You just see his...

:36:59.:36:59.

He has locked him in with 200 to go. if there is a disqualification

:37:00.:37:03.

for Robbie Andrews. Painful to watch.

:37:04.:37:24.

His thoughts. Obviously you are disappointed not

:37:25.:37:37.

to make the Olympic final. What didn't work?

:37:38.:37:42.

I am not sure. And then I tried to turn

:37:43.:37:52.

it on in the last 100 It was disappointing,

:37:53.:38:02.

because I wanted to do so much better for my family and my team

:38:03.:38:06.

and everybody at home And it was just really disappointing

:38:07.:38:08.

for them as well as myself. I thought I was good enough

:38:09.:38:13.

but obviously not. You were in a great position.

:38:14.:38:16.

Tactically you get it spot on. Anything you would have

:38:17.:38:19.

done differently? No, I mean, I think, I can't,

:38:20.:38:26.

obviously, I will have to go

:38:27.:38:28.

back and watch the race. But at the moment I don't feel

:38:29.:38:31.

I have done anything wrong. You know, I guess

:38:32.:38:34.

that is all I can do. But, you know, it was disappointing

:38:35.:38:37.

when I have put all this work in in and I thought I was good enough

:38:38.:38:43.

and I am... I just wasn't. We appreciate you talking to us.

:38:44.:38:50.

Thank you. Chris O'Hare, still a reasonably

:38:51.:38:54.

young man, 25, I am sure

:38:55.:38:56.

he will be back to try again. And the Spaniard failed and couldn't

:38:57.:38:58.

get there to Robbie Andrews. The women's 400 metre hurdle final

:38:59.:39:15.

is coming up later on this evening. One of the finals of

:39:16.:39:21.

the morning session. Away safely this time.

:39:22.:39:32.

Thomas will have Clement to chase. Just a metre or two down.

:39:33.:39:38.

The two Kenyans going well. Thomas tried to stay

:39:39.:39:41.

in contact with the American. Chopping down on to the hurdle.

:39:42.:39:50.

Thomas will finish quickly. Don't write him off.

:39:51.:39:55.

It is Clement leading it. White is there.

:39:56.:40:02.

Thomas is a long way off. Clement is checking

:40:03.:40:04.

into the final hurdle. Here comes the Kenyan!

:40:05.:40:15.

It will be close. Thomas just missing out

:40:16.:40:18.

by five hundredths of a second on what would have been

:40:19.:40:43.

a wonderful medal. A Kenyan record after

:40:44.:40:49.

the World Championships last year. But what a return to the top

:40:50.:40:59.

of the podium, literally, He burst onto the scene

:41:00.:41:07.

as a youngster 10, 11 years ago. We thought he would be brilliant

:41:08.:41:16.

then. All sorts of issues in his life

:41:17.:41:19.

and career which you have seen him

:41:20.:41:34.

come back in fine form. An event which we were worried

:41:35.:41:37.

about all year being maybe a little bit average,

:41:38.:41:43.

if you like, it turned out to be a little bit

:41:44.:41:45.

of a classic in the end. Puerto Rico with a false start

:41:46.:41:48.

and not able to contest it. But the USA is once more on top

:41:49.:41:51.

in the 400 metre hurdles That is the first time since Sydney

:41:52.:41:55.

2000 that all the medallists have run under 48 seconds

:41:56.:43:16.

in the Olympic final. The Olympic world champion

:43:17.:43:20.

in 400 metre hurdles. Ryan took the wind out of everyone's

:43:21.:43:34.

sails with that world leading putt. It is over 22 metres

:43:35.:43:41.

again for Crouser! And the young man is putting

:43:42.:43:57.

together a series of his life. He is closing in, possibly,

:43:58.:44:10.

on the Olympic record, 22.47. Ryan Crouser, holding

:44:11.:44:13.

all the aces at the moment. Neither of them have been

:44:14.:44:23.

to the Olympics before. A two-horse race as we wait for this

:44:24.:44:44.

distance to be measured. And his competitor is not

:44:45.:44:54.

exactly a small man either. Let us have a look at

:44:55.:45:10.

Charlie Grice in the 450 metres. -- Let us have a look

:45:11.:45:23.

at Charlie Grice from 450 metres. This is a totally different

:45:24.:45:25.

Charlie Grice that turned up today than we saw racing in the heats

:45:26.:45:32.

Charlie Grice did get lucky, as was pointed out, in the,

:45:33.:45:45.

when we were watching it, he was lucky.

:45:46.:45:50.

Blankenship was moving quickly he got away through.

:45:51.:45:56.

He was lucky as Blankenship moved slightly wide.

:45:57.:46:13.

But Charlie Grice had the reaction he did not have

:46:14.:46:15.

into third at one point and hold on for the qualifying

:46:16.:46:20.

At that point, he would not have been certain that the fastest

:46:21.:46:23.

I think the two fastest losers did come from that heat in the end.

:46:24.:46:30.

He was looking up at the rerun to make sure he got the fifth placed.

:46:31.:46:43.

The Olympic medal was already in his pocket.

:46:44.:46:53.

Blankenship, and Michael in particular, believes

:46:54.:46:58.

that they should be taught not to open the door and let

:46:59.:47:00.

That was quite a big invite from Blankenship, wasn't it?

:47:01.:47:06.

And Robbie Andrews who may get disqualified in the second

:47:07.:47:17.

semi-final for taking steps on the infield to get past.

:47:18.:47:24.

Lizze Sharp representing Great Britain.

:47:25.:47:47.

I think the first semi-final is the hardest and neither of our girls

:47:48.:47:50.

On paper you will look at that and see it is a tough one.

:47:51.:47:56.

But I think it is doable for Lindsay.

:47:57.:47:58.

She puts herself in a better position.

:47:59.:48:03.

Looking to do that today, fingers crossed.

:48:04.:48:11.

I know you have to join Andrew in the commentary box.

:48:12.:48:17.

They are taking position on the track.

:48:18.:48:20.

The first semi-final with Margaret and of course

:48:21.:48:28.

I am doing well on my pronunciation tonight, I tell you.

:48:29.:48:39.

There is a man who can pronounce these names better and his name

:48:40.:48:42.

If there are two women who could push Semenya in the semi-final,

:48:43.:49:01.

A note on the 1500 metres we saw with Robbie Andrews, the American,

:49:02.:49:07.

that result has gone official for now.

:49:08.:49:09.

But even American colleagues thought he would be disqualified.

:49:10.:49:14.

It is Ryan Crouser in the fourth round.

:49:15.:49:26.

The top eight only to progress to the second half of

:49:27.:49:29.

One of the best series of putts I have seen ever.

:49:30.:49:44.

Ryan Crouser, we didn't know how he was going to handle the pressure.

:49:45.:49:50.

The US champion ahead of Kovacs earlier this summer.

:49:51.:49:57.

Other than that it has been all Kovacs.

:49:58.:50:02.

Here at the Games, the big one, big prizes on offer.

:50:03.:50:04.

The men's 200 metre final is in about 1.5 hours.

:50:05.:50:12.

Usain Bolt is of course going in that one.

:50:13.:50:16.

But we are ready for the first semi-final

:50:17.:50:18.

We mentioned the two great strengths of

:50:19.:50:34.

Took almost two seconds of her personal best.

:50:35.:50:42.

There is Wilson, second in the US trials.

:50:43.:51:02.

She took the title in March in Oregon which is

:51:03.:51:13.

The new 1500 metre champion, a slow race in Amsterdam last month,

:51:14.:51:28.

The 800 metre champion of Europe after winning in Amsterdam.

:51:29.:51:35.

The Italian, cleared in March to run for her new country.

:51:36.:52:02.

The 20-year-old, last year's junior champion.

:52:03.:52:11.

A great run, her personal best, two-minutes dead.

:52:12.:52:13.

Wonderful conditions inside the stadium.

:52:14.:52:21.

The first of the women's 800m semi-final.

:52:22.:52:30.

Two to go through automatically plus two fastest losers.

:52:31.:52:43.

A great power in the later stages, looking to see if it is brisk

:52:44.:52:49.

The European champion looking for a fast finish.

:52:50.:54:06.

The two we highlighted are the two that go through automatically.

:54:07.:54:28.

Wambui with her great strength takes her win.

:54:29.:54:32.

Niyonsaba, looked around, let her have it.

:54:33.:54:37.

Wambui and Niyonsaba through to the final.

:54:38.:54:41.

Wilson in third place held that position.

:54:42.:54:53.

Had a little bit of competition, Nataliya Pryshchepa came

:54:54.:54:55.

through but she needed this to be a little bit quicker.

:54:56.:55:02.

Only two fastest losers from the three semifinals

:55:03.:55:05.

and the others could go quicker than that.

:55:06.:55:08.

She looked like she was easing and relaxing.

:55:09.:55:15.

The two in front could relax but she needed to go as fast

:55:16.:55:18.

She is pushing hard once her work is done, a little look to Wambui,

:55:19.:55:30.

Always aware of where the third-place athlete is.

:55:31.:55:45.

Those times were not quite quick enough.

:55:46.:55:59.

Four women under two minutes but will that be quick enough?

:56:00.:56:02.

World indoor champion from New Zealand.

:56:03.:56:20.

The second round in fact was his best.

:56:21.:56:35.

Trying to work out how close that is to the 22 metre line.

:56:36.:56:38.

Ten centimetre board in front of that, you cannot touch it,

:56:39.:56:47.

The last round just shy of 22 metres.

:56:48.:57:00.

Ryan Crouser has unleashed a massive throw in this fifth round.

:57:01.:57:19.

He has had three throws already that put him in the lead and he has just

:57:20.:57:25.

extended it, it might challenge the Olympic record.

:57:26.:57:29.

Five centimetres on the Olympic record.

:57:30.:57:47.

Right down on the other end of the arena, the shotput.

:57:48.:57:52.

It is the second semifinals of the 800 metres and the first

:57:53.:57:55.

Remember, last year at the World Championship she got

:57:56.:58:12.

The 19-year-old Ethiopian, a good talent, Alemu

:58:13.:58:18.

The Swiss has had some great indoor races.

:58:19.:58:38.

Talking of 1.57, Melissa Bishop did that recently.

:58:39.:58:48.

The former champion, Sum not in great shape...

:58:49.:58:57.

I say not in great shape by her very high standards.

:58:58.:59:05.

Lindh, a new personal best to make it into the semi.

:59:06.:59:11.

And an athlete who is very dangerous in slower races, Jozwik.

:59:12.:59:14.

What I am saying is, do not make it slow.

:59:15.:59:30.

Melissa Bishop started very, very quickly with

:59:31.:59:32.

They will probably go through the first 200

:59:33.:59:34.

A little bit quick in the first heat and it is an advantage to know

:59:35.:00:03.

what time you need in order to have a chance of advancing

:00:04.:00:05.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke we know can do this, we know that she can run

:00:06.:00:14.

quickly and she may be glad it was taken out at a pace.

:00:15.:00:18.

A little bit quicker than the first heat, 57.65.

:00:19.:00:29.

One or two I thought may have sat up.

:00:30.:00:38.

Sum controlling it with the youngster from Ethiopia, Alemu.

:00:39.:00:44.

Bishop looking for a little bit of room.

:00:45.:00:47.

Alemu closer to the front than she often is.

:00:48.:00:56.

A faster race than the first so I think third and fourth

:00:57.:01:34.

might have a chance, sadly Shelayna Oskan-Clarke

:01:35.:01:35.

What happened around the top end must have cost

:01:36.:01:52.

really established herself as someone moving through.

:01:53.:02:04.

You see the stumble. That was the earlier blocking.

:02:05.:02:10.

As they come round with 200 metres to go,

:02:11.:02:13.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke in that position.

:02:14.:02:24.

She moved wide to go around Lupu, and she lost the momentum

:02:25.:02:28.

and a little bit of the fight, because she struggled to come back.

:02:29.:02:33.

If she had not lost that momentum she could have pulled through.

:02:34.:02:43.

Melissa Bishop has turned off the burners a little bit.

:02:44.:02:49.

She knows that she qualified with ease but Shelayna Oskan-Clarke

:02:50.:02:52.

needed to keep fighting because she lost out

:02:53.:02:54.

Buchel in the fastest loser position.

:02:55.:03:21.

doing what Shelayna Oskan-Clarke did last time.

:03:22.:03:33.

Back to this great shotput final, Steve.

:03:34.:03:38.

The only man who can stop Ryan Crouser, Joe Kovacs.

:03:39.:03:43.

He is currently in the silver medal spot.

:03:44.:03:54.

this is the penultimate throw of the competition.

:03:55.:03:58.

Now, if ever he had to dig deep, this is the time.

:03:59.:04:01.

Joe Kovacs trying to get everything he can.

:04:02.:04:10.

Big scream but, no, it is below 22 metres.

:04:11.:04:17.

and Ryan Crouser is the Olympic champion.

:04:18.:04:24.

Well, he will have his last throw, Crouser.

:04:25.:04:29.

Looks as though he may even go further.

:04:30.:04:33.

Randy Barnes holding the world record, 1990.

:04:34.:04:44.

Crouser, a new superstar of shotput is born.

:04:45.:04:49.

Coached by Matt Wilson, the discus champion from 1976.

:04:50.:04:56.

22.52, the Olympic record in his last throw.

:04:57.:05:08.

Another long throw that probably could have won the competition.

:05:09.:05:21.

Probably five of his six throws could have won.

:05:22.:05:25.

At 26 in years of age, his first major.

:05:26.:05:28.

After a slow start for the Americans in this track and field,

:05:29.:05:45.

Success on the track and success in the shotput.

:05:46.:06:03.

And we will head back to the women's 800 metres third semi-final.

:06:04.:06:12.

And we can just have a look at what Lynsey needs to do.

:06:13.:06:18.

Neither is the world champion Joanna Jozwik.

:06:19.:06:24.

And Melissa Bishop - 1:59.35.

:06:25.:06:35.

So the start list for the last of the semifinals in the women's 800m

:06:36.:06:39.

and Caster Semenya goes here, Lynsey Sharp is in there.

:06:40.:06:43.

Maryna Arzamasava of Belarus, just inside Lynsey Sharp there.

:06:44.:06:46.

So Caster Semenya - 23 races this reason,

:06:47.:07:11.

I was looking to see, but 22 wins from 23.

:07:12.:07:15.

She did lose a 400m race in March in Pretoria,

:07:16.:07:19.

She's a very good 400m runner as well,

:07:20.:07:28.

Maybe struggling to deliver with very best.

:07:29.:07:40.

Hasn't necessarily lived up to that enormous talent.

:07:41.:08:02.

There's Kate Grace, winner of the US trials.

:08:03.:08:03.

The best in the US, Grace went through as one

:08:04.:08:06.

Caster Semenya, such attention upon her.

:08:07.:08:10.

We saw how she finished the Monaco Diamond League,

:08:11.:08:12.

you understand why people are thinking

:08:13.:08:15.

Lynsey Sharp believes she's in the shape of her life.

:08:16.:08:25.

But Maryna Arzamasava a considerable threat,

:08:26.:08:35.

a world champion after taking that title

:08:36.:08:36.

Amela Terzic, a 1500m specialist, but showed that strength to finish

:08:37.:08:45.

very quickly in the first round to take second place

:08:46.:08:47.

The 21-year-old who went below two minutes

:08:48.:08:57.

A very special moment for an 800m runner.

:08:58.:09:03.

She knows you almost have to take Caster Semenya out of the equation

:09:04.:09:11.

Two automatic places but perhaps one here for everyone else.

:09:12.:09:18.

And Lynsey Sharp almost up alongside her after the gun waits,

:09:19.:09:21.

she can win any which way she pleases.

:09:22.:09:25.

The third of the semifinals, they know what time

:09:26.:09:36.

Not likely that we see Caster Semenya go on the front

:09:37.:09:46.

I'm glad to see Arzamasava move to the front.

:09:47.:09:50.

That means she can react as she would do in a Diamond League

:09:51.:09:56.

race pretty much and she's been racing well all year.

:09:57.:09:58.

She can just keep a good position, be ready to react,

:09:59.:10:01.

at some point Semenya will go and go hard.

:10:02.:10:03.

Probably won't be until the last 200m.

:10:04.:10:05.

I think Maryna Arzamasava, the world champion, has decided

:10:06.:10:11.

the options to qualifying in this one and take it

:10:12.:10:14.

Exactly the same time, and that was quick enough,

:10:15.:10:17.

that second semifinal, so Arzamasava ahead of Lynsey Sharp

:10:18.:10:19.

and Semenya, just bouncing along in fifth place at the home.

:10:20.:10:22.

A good run from Yarigo, and Grace is there,

:10:23.:10:29.

and Chebet beginning to drop off, so too Chunyu and Terzic.

:10:30.:10:31.

Do they have something in the latter stages?

:10:32.:10:36.

Arzamasava, Lynsey Sharp looking strong at the moment.

:10:37.:10:39.

Arzamasava just beginning to fatigue slightly.

:10:40.:10:43.

Semenya is there and Grace beginning to make a move

:10:44.:10:45.

Arzamasava looking around rather nervously.

:10:46.:10:52.

Semenya just appearing on her shoulder.

:10:53.:10:56.

Two places as they all tend to go a bit wide there.

:10:57.:11:02.

And Semenya eases her way around and Grace spots the door

:11:03.:11:05.

open inside Arzamasava, but does she have the speed?

:11:06.:11:07.

Lynsey Sharp shutting her eyes and driving hard now for the second

:11:08.:11:10.

But Lynsey Sharp, no concern, she does look good.

:11:11.:11:21.

What I like about Sharp this year is she doesn't panic

:11:22.:11:29.

when she gets into the trouble in the closing stages of the races.

:11:30.:11:33.

She did get in a bit of trouble there.

:11:34.:11:35.

She was a little bit lucky that the gap opened up

:11:36.:11:38.

but also clever in the way she was patient and waited.

:11:39.:11:41.

She didn't panic, waited for it to open up and when she did

:11:42.:11:44.

she struck and struck fast to be able to come through

:11:45.:11:47.

Just looking at the times for Kate Grace.

:11:48.:11:52.

Kate Grace is going to go through, Arzamasava is going to go through.

:11:53.:11:57.

They all did their job to ensure they'll be the two fastest

:11:58.:12:00.

Thanks for the pace to Arzamasava's pace.

:12:01.:12:05.

She had four away already with 200m away.

:12:06.:12:10.

All they needed to do is keep running hard and they would qualify

:12:11.:12:15.

as fastest losers but to have calculated that within the race,

:12:16.:12:17.

and she wanted to qualify outright in the first two.

:12:18.:12:21.

She waited patiently until a space opened up.

:12:22.:12:23.

You said Arzamasava had moved slightly wide and Grace saw that,

:12:24.:12:26.

and ran far better than she did in the heat.

:12:27.:12:30.

She didn't look good at all in the meets,

:12:31.:12:32.

but here she looked good and came through.

:12:33.:12:34.

And she came through to grab that third place which could have been

:12:35.:12:46.

significant but Caster Semenya, very easy there.

:12:47.:12:48.

Just glance up on the screen, you can see the difference.

:12:49.:12:51.

She is looking slightly up at the screen to check,

:12:52.:12:56.

she's working hard right through to the line.

:12:57.:12:58.

Caster Semenya cruising those last few metres there.

:12:59.:13:04.

Semenya is a strong favourite. Wambui is strong.

:13:05.:13:07.

But the chance of getting into the final,

:13:08.:13:09.

you may never know what will happen. Lynsey Sharp is through.

:13:10.:13:12.

She was a semifinalist in London four years ago.

:13:13.:13:15.

Now she goes through with Caster Semenya,

:13:16.:13:20.

Kate Grace and Maryna Arzamasava also going through

:13:21.:13:21.

And again, you can see what it means,

:13:22.:13:28.

she knows she's into the final, which is on Saturday,

:13:29.:13:31.

Just said to Lynsey, that result makes good reading.

:13:32.:13:34.

Must be a mixture of emotions right now, excitement, joy,

:13:35.:13:38.

Yeah, I mean, I have just been so looking forward to getting

:13:39.:13:45.

that Q next to my name, specially after last year,

:13:46.:13:48.

I know I can complete well in the final,

:13:49.:13:57.

but it's all about getting there. I'm so happy doing that.

:13:58.:13:59.

What did you go in with tactically and what kind of plan?

:14:00.:14:02.

I didn't go in as I planned, I got into positions I didn't plan on.

:14:03.:14:06.

The main thing is to stay patient and gaps opened. It all paid off.

:14:07.:14:09.

We saw in the Diamond League time and time again,

:14:10.:14:15.

you must fancy your chances. I live for the stuff.

:14:16.:14:20.

This is really where it starts. I was expecting to make the finals.

:14:21.:14:25.

So now it's about getting some rest and

:14:26.:14:27.

Thanks for talking to us and well done for reaching the final.

:14:28.:14:44.

Ryan Crouser, a colossal throw, celebrating a new Olympic record

:14:45.:14:46.

and a gold medal in the men's shot put final.

:14:47.:14:50.

That record 28 years old, Ryan Crouser has broken.

:14:51.:15:08.

Joe Kovacs settled for silver, and Tomas Walsh taking bronze.

:15:09.:15:12.

Another great field event final this evening,

:15:13.:15:14.

the women's javelin, the South African.

:15:15.:15:16.

Twice Commonwealth Games champion in the past,

:15:17.:15:20.

33 years of age now, snaking down the runway.

:15:21.:15:22.

I don't know why you would do that - sideways.

:15:23.:15:41.

That final is about just under 20 minutes away.

:15:42.:16:26.

And next on the track, though, actually next on the track

:16:27.:16:33.

When we do leave you, we'll see that on the red button.

:16:34.:16:39.

Doyle has undergone some real changes, she's married,

:16:40.:16:51.

moved her base as well and it's clear they're in fruit,

:16:52.:16:54.

This is a fabulous performance from the Scot so far.

:16:55.:17:05.

I don't think about medals, I think about going out performing.

:17:06.:17:10.

It's nice people are talking about me because obviously shows I'm

:17:11.:17:13.

running well and doing OK, but I just try to think about trying

:17:14.:17:16.

to execute the right race and with that comes fast times

:17:17.:17:19.

For me it's focusing on performing and running a good race.

:17:20.:17:24.

We made changes this year around that top bend, we felt the last

:17:25.:17:28.

couple of years I have been good for the first 200,

:17:29.:17:32.

but it's that two and three that I lost positions.

:17:33.:17:35.

I changed the pattern slightly because of that.

:17:36.:17:40.

If I get that right, I can get that up with the top

:17:41.:17:43.

The confidence is the big difference, you know.

:17:44.:17:51.

Going into it - I look back on the way I felt in London,

:17:52.:17:55.

To me it was about making the team and going to the Olympics.

:17:56.:17:59.

But this is about - I made the team but I want to go

:18:00.:18:03.

there and do something when I'm there.

:18:04.:18:04.

I'm a totally different athlete than I was four years ago,

:18:05.:18:10.

It's been really pleasing to see the progress in that four-year

:18:11.:18:24.

cycle, when you can tangibly see somebody improving in terms

:18:25.:18:28.

of getting into finals and moving up and the time coming down.

:18:29.:18:31.

There's been a lot of hard work that's gone on behind-the-scenes

:18:32.:18:36.

in terms of get the stride pattern right and she's getting there,

:18:37.:18:39.

she's got the speed there, but the technical part of her game

:18:40.:18:42.

Yes, the technical part has certainly improved,

:18:43.:18:45.

and also what she's done both her and the coach,

:18:46.:18:51.

is really meticulously plan how they're going to, first of all,

:18:52.:18:53.

of course, match that with good, good, good technique

:18:54.:18:57.

going to make all the difference, earn specially in the 400m hurdles

:18:58.:19:01.

You've got some clips for us to look at.

:19:02.:19:07.

She was always worried about this stride pattern.

:19:08.:19:16.

Always kind of been pushing her to try to get

:19:17.:19:18.

First of all, what she said she was working on was that stride

:19:19.:19:33.

pattern from one hurdle to hurdle five, that always had to be 15

:19:34.:19:36.

Now, I know people may be thinking - why do you continue sprinting,

:19:37.:19:40.

why can't you come on any foot and just jump?

:19:41.:19:43.

But it's really important to come off the hurdles in the right

:19:44.:19:46.

position because when you are tired, you need to drive.

:19:47.:19:48.

So here she's still on that 15 stride pattern, changes

:19:49.:19:50.

down to that one there - that's her 16.

:19:51.:19:52.

She needs to take this again, the 16 which will be a left leg,

:19:53.:19:56.

but remember in the heat, she messed it up a little bit

:19:57.:19:59.

and because she didn't drive on to the barriers just to chill,

:20:00.:20:02.

just to relax and try to save energy, then

:20:03.:20:04.

Here once again, we saw this all season, she throws

:20:05.:20:08.

in an extra stride here, she gets on her good leg, so she can

:20:09.:20:11.

It worked in this particular time, because it's a heat,

:20:12.:20:15.

But, of course, when the real deal happens, which is now,

:20:16.:20:18.

she's in the final, she's in lane 1, she cannot afford to run like that

:20:19.:20:22.

Would you say looking at the field that's there and besids the time

:20:23.:20:31.

that Delilah has posted this season, that is quite an open final.

:20:32.:20:34.

Now the world champion has come back.

:20:35.:20:41.

Ignore what she ran, 54.3, is her season's best,

:20:42.:20:48.

So what she's got to do is just run her normal race.

:20:49.:20:53.

And fail that, it's got to be Ashley.

:20:54.:21:07.

cringe slightly when she takes over every single hurdle.

:21:08.:21:11.

It only takes a clip when you have a bit of fatigue

:21:12.:21:14.

Doyle, she's in lane one, she's going to see everybody,

:21:15.:21:20.

going to be very difficult for her to put everything into play,

:21:21.:21:23.

but we know she's won some of the big races in the Diamond

:21:24.:21:26.

She's capable of going under 54seconds and if anybody of the big

:21:27.:21:31.

three there make a mistake, and Doyle is in the right position

:21:32.:21:34.

going into that final barrier, she can sneak a bronze.

:21:35.:21:36.

We have been calling it all year but she has the potential

:21:37.:21:40.

Is she at a disadvantage of being in lane one?

:21:41.:21:44.

What is the disadvantage, is it different

:21:45.:21:55.

with hurdles that makes lane one a disadvantage?

:21:56.:21:57.

Now, what happens with hurdles because they go over

:21:58.:22:06.

the track in a different way, when she's in lane one,

:22:07.:22:09.

she may end up with three hurdles on the bend,

:22:10.:22:11.

when you're further out, the hurdles are out on the straight,

:22:12.:22:14.

and that can I affect the stride pattern, that's why it's a little

:22:15.:22:17.

Athletes do not tend to train in lane one.

:22:18.:22:31.

It feels like a good time to take a trip down memory lane

:22:32.:22:44.

when Great Britain was pretty dominant in these events.

:22:45.:22:53.

She will not mind a little bit about that.

:22:54.:23:58.

I tell you a secret, I was there and I was 19 years

:23:59.:24:03.

old and I had six tickets for the dream team but it was not

:24:04.:24:08.

the men but the women and I swapped them for that

:24:09.:24:10.

the tickets thought he was getting the American men's team.

:24:11.:24:21.

If you are watching, I am sorry.

:24:22.:24:30.

Well, it was a fantastic Olympic Games for Great Britain.

:24:31.:24:39.

And a certain hurdler and he absolutely fell apart.

:24:40.:24:44.

Let's have a listen to Shelayna Oskan-Clarke.

:24:45.:24:48.

Unfortunately she did not make it through.

:24:49.:24:54.

I got tripped up over there and lost a bit of momentum, really.

:24:55.:25:08.

In the end, it is my responsibility to get myself in that position.

:25:09.:25:12.

I probably should have been a bit more patient because it was a little

:25:13.:25:15.

If I would have got ahead of that person I would have been fighting

:25:16.:25:24.

But what about the things you've learnt at the World Championship

:25:25.:25:34.

and another big step up being in the Olympics?

:25:35.:25:37.

An incentive to go away and train harder and come back and try

:25:38.:25:49.

to put myself in the best position when I am racing.

:25:50.:25:53.

I am in great shape but it is tough when you are doing the rounds.

:25:54.:25:56.

Thank you and we appreciate you stopping to talk to us.

:25:57.:26:01.

STUDIO: The women's javelin is taking place tonight

:26:02.:26:04.

This is the European champion Tatsian Khaladovich.

:26:05.:26:27.

Very similar to the throw of Sunette Viljoen but no one really

:26:28.:26:39.

setting the world alight in this women's final at the halfway stage.

:26:40.:26:51.

That throw 64.60 for Tatsian Khaladovich

:26:52.:26:59.

so she goes into second place behind Sunette Viljoen.

:27:00.:27:16.

She can make history here by taking a third if she gets it right.

:27:17.:27:20.

As we stand at the end of round three, she is in fourth place.

:27:21.:27:30.

We have others throw beyond 70 metres.

:27:31.:28:22.

The world record holder over 72 metres.

:28:23.:28:31.

Her best, 63 on the nose, the best so far.

:28:32.:28:39.

STUDIO: Usain Bolt out on the warm-up track.

:28:40.:28:46.

We'll be in the stadium just before 10:30pm.

:28:47.:28:49.

He seems to be fairly relaxed, it is fair to say that.

:28:50.:28:53.

He has such an eclectic mix of music.

:28:54.:29:08.

And he dances in the same way to everything.

:29:09.:29:14.

It could be the equivalent to a foxtrot.

:29:15.:29:21.

We also have Elidh Doyle in the 400 hurdles.

:29:22.:29:33.

But we go to the taekwondo to see if Jade Jones can defend her title.

:29:34.:29:37.

Hopefully we will be back for the 400 hurdles.

:29:38.:29:42.

The athletics will continue on the Red Button.

:29:43.:29:45.

Right now, we hand over to you for what hopefully will be

:29:46.:29:57.

23 years old, from North Wales, she is a massive star in Wales

:29:58.:30:05.

and she could be a massive star for Team GB and for

:30:06.:30:08.

the rest of the world if she can defend her title.

:30:09.:30:25.

COMMENTATOR: Lovely block, Jade Jones is going through.

:30:26.:30:31.

So far no problems in the defence of her title.

:30:32.:31:03.

She is the favourite but her opponents is the number two seed.

:31:04.:31:15.

Nick, this should be one real tight contest.

:31:16.:31:18.

Yes, it should be a really phenomenal.

:31:19.:31:21.

We wanted to see the number one against the number two.

:31:22.:31:25.

Jade has the advantage, winning the two most recent battles.

:31:26.:31:31.

This is the one the crowd is waiting for.

:31:32.:31:41.

When you are the reigning Olympic champion,

:31:42.:31:45.

that must count for so much. Absolutely.

:31:46.:31:51.

There is a lot of pressure once you become the Olympic champion

:31:52.:31:54.

and that is something Jade Jones has had to deal with.

:31:55.:32:00.

It was the first-ever Olympic title in taekwondo for Great Britain.

:32:01.:32:04.

It has taken a while for her to adapt to be Olympic champion.

:32:05.:32:08.

The pressure where every opponent raises her game to try and beat her

:32:09.:32:14.

The World Championship title would mean nothing

:32:15.:32:34.

if she could defend her Olympic gold medal.

:32:35.:32:37.

She is so down to earth, softly spoken but in these next

:32:38.:32:43.

couple of minutes she turns into an unbelievable Welsh warrior.

:32:44.:32:46.

she will shut down into the little bubble she is in.

:32:47.:32:53.

Yet, when she is relaxed, she is just a normal young woman

:32:54.:33:14.

but as soon as she is out there on the night,

:33:15.:33:17.

she is super focused and she wants to win every single time.

:33:18.:33:20.

Jade Jones taking on Eva Calvo Gomez, coming up shortly.

:33:21.:33:28.

If you need a guide to taekwondo, this is a quick guide.

:33:29.:33:35.

Taekwondo became a fully-fledged Olympic sport in Sydney in 2000.

:33:36.:33:44.

Each contest has three rounds of two minutes, and a competitor can win

:33:45.:33:47.

on points or if their opponent is unable to continue.

:33:48.:33:51.

Points are awarded for permitted, accurate and powerful blows

:33:52.:33:53.

Attacks to the body are made using a fist or foot,

:33:54.:33:59.

but an athlete can only use their feet

:34:00.:34:02.

to strike the area above the collarbone.

:34:03.:34:05.

Punches to the head and attacks to the spine are not allowed.

:34:06.:34:09.

The only techniques permitted are kicks where the athlete uses

:34:10.:34:14.

the area of the foot below the ankle and punches where the athlete

:34:15.:34:17.

uses the knuckle part of a tightly-clenched fist.

:34:18.:34:21.

Scoring differs depending where or how an athlete has attacked.

:34:22.:34:24.

One point is awarded for a valid attack to the body protector

:34:25.:34:27.

but if the attack is a turning or reverse kick to the body,

:34:28.:34:31.

An athlete will receive three points for a legal kick to the head.

:34:32.:34:36.

And if this is a turning kick, it achieves its maximum - four points.

:34:37.:34:39.

At the end of the three rounds, a competitor with the most

:34:40.:34:42.

points wins the match, but in the event of a tie,

:34:43.:34:45.

where the first competitor to score a point wins.

:34:46.:34:51.

All you need to know about taekwondo as we head

:34:52.:34:53.

into the gold medal contest, let's go back to the Carioca arena,

:34:54.:35:22.

Back for more this time - Jade Jones and this one

:35:23.:35:25.

Absolutely. It can't wait for this one.

:35:26.:35:28.

It's going to be a cracker, it really is.

:35:29.:35:30.

Defending her Olympic title, of course -

:35:31.:35:31.

But like you say, Eva Calvo Gomez, who won that -

:35:32.:35:35.

well, will want to say something about that.

:35:36.:35:37.

So it should be a great match-up between these two.

:35:38.:35:40.

And great to see that such opposition that, you know,

:35:41.:35:42.

all of a sudden Eva Calvo Gomez came up and took over from Jones.

:35:43.:35:45.

It's time to decide the destination of the Olympic gold.

:35:46.:36:00.

Eva Calvo Gomez in red, the taller of the two.

:36:01.:36:03.

Great Britain's Jade Jones wants to keep the right foot in front.

:36:04.:36:09.

Atmosphere electric here at the Carioca Arena -

:36:10.:36:15.

Who can find the uptown quality to get the shot on the board?

:36:16.:36:24.

The range finder for Eva Calvo Gomez.

:36:25.:36:27.

Good push, kick power from the Spanish fighter.

:36:28.:36:34.

Just trying to find her range at the moment, Jones.

:36:35.:36:38.

We have seen it a lot with Jade Jones -

:36:39.:36:40.

just takes the time, fields the distance,

:36:41.:36:42.

gets the distance right and then starts to pick up the points.

:36:43.:36:51.

She's trying to find a little space for her feet.

:36:52.:37:00.

This one really ebbing and flowing back and forth.

:37:01.:37:15.

I think she's going to make sure she keeps maintaining that distance

:37:16.:37:20.

and then come in when it's the right moment, Jade Jones,

:37:21.:37:26.

but, of course, Eva Calvo Gomez is going to try to use her range.

:37:27.:37:30.

Try to come in with a hook kick there, Jones in blue.

:37:31.:37:33.

She sneaks in and taking the head shot and plants another!

:37:34.:37:42.

I think we're going to see a protest here.

:37:43.:37:54.

The coach saying that he wants one of the head kicks invalidated.

:37:55.:38:00.

He's going to have to ask for one of the kicks to be taken away.

:38:01.:38:11.

The contention here is that the first head shot

:38:12.:38:14.

They go into the clinch, the coach is saying that it was holding

:38:15.:38:22.

the Spanish fighter and the head shot was over the shoulder.

:38:23.:38:28.

Let's have a look and a little listen.

:38:29.:38:36.

The coach got his instructions wrong.

:38:37.:38:51.

Card instantly pocketed and with 20 seconds to go, Jade Jones tries

:38:52.:38:54.

She's starting to pick up the points here and just eight seconds left

:38:55.:39:02.

A little cushion, it won't be a cushion she can rest

:39:03.:39:16.

A little bit of coach and athlete consternation there, some confusion,

:39:17.:39:32.

Two head shots and two lots of three points there.

:39:33.:39:47.

So six points, but like you say, she knows that she can't just come

:39:48.:39:50.

and expect to go two more rounds with just six points.

:39:51.:39:54.

She's going to try to add to that, of course.

:39:55.:40:04.

The British coach advising Jade Jones

:40:05.:40:09.

She cuts a strong figure here against Eva Calvo Gomez.

:40:10.:40:16.

Jade Jones in blue, Eva Calvo Gomez in red,

:40:17.:40:24.

but who's going to get back into this?

:40:25.:40:26.

A chip and charge as Jones tries to charge upstairs as well.

:40:27.:40:41.

But like you say - Gomez, same technique,

:40:42.:40:46.

caught her with the same technique, but got to be careful as she comes

:40:47.:40:49.

Enormous tension and rivalry between these two.

:40:50.:41:07.

Will it be repeat or will it be revenge?

:41:08.:41:09.

Jones hoping for her second Olympic title.

:41:10.:41:13.

She won it at the home crowd in London,

:41:14.:41:15.

She's on the road with a five point gap look scoring with that

:41:16.:41:21.

head shot, and again great defence from Gomez.

:41:22.:41:25.

She's still in this, and an excellent push point

:41:26.:41:27.

Yes, she's just got to keep her head,

:41:28.:41:32.

There's the head shot that puts Gomez back into this one.

:41:33.:41:40.

The Spanish fighter not giving up without a fight.

:41:41.:41:44.

And Gomez, in terms of head-to-heads,

:41:45.:41:46.

She's 7-6 behind on the scoreboard, though.

:41:47.:41:52.

It is absolute classic, and she's going to see

:41:53.:41:59.

what she scored with earlier, go back to that because - look at that.

:42:00.:42:04.

The direction of the scores has changed quickly as well.

:42:05.:42:14.

Jones with that great physicality, Eva Calvo Gomez, a very strong

:42:15.:42:17.

fighter in her own right and she's put herself back in context here.

:42:18.:42:20.

This is Olympic taekwondo at the very best.

:42:21.:42:27.

She was in the lead, and Eva Calvo Gomez has clawed it back.

:42:28.:42:39.

The coaching instruction is quite clear there -

:42:40.:42:45.

forget that round, give me your best two minutes,

:42:46.:42:48.

but it was the best two minutes from Gomez here.

:42:49.:42:52.

Yes, I think absolutely right - it was fantastic for Gomez,

:42:53.:42:56.

Gomez absolutely came forward, didn't she?

:42:57.:43:02.

And she was determined to pull that deficit back and she did.

:43:03.:43:11.

It is, coming into this last round now,

:43:12.:43:15.

All depends now on who wants it most and a little bit of change

:43:16.:43:21.

I think Eva Calvo Gomez did change her tactics,

:43:22.:43:25.

The women's under 57kg gold-medal contest.

:43:26.:43:35.

Jade Jones, her opponent - you can guess what colour she's in.

:43:36.:43:46.

But what colour will they be carrying at the end?

:43:47.:43:48.

Jones picks off a little flick kick to the body.

:43:49.:43:52.

It is a fantastic match. Great stuff here.

:43:53.:44:18.

Eva Calvo Gomez absolutely taking the fight to Jones.

:44:19.:44:20.

Jones has to fight back but it's an open match,

:44:21.:44:23.

an open final and that's why it's so close.

:44:24.:44:25.

She takes it, an absolute picture-perfect shot there.

:44:26.:44:31.

But there's one more for Gomez. A five point match.

:44:32.:44:37.

Jones goes for the head again, she scores.

:44:38.:44:40.

The Spanish fighter, this a real battle.

:44:41.:44:49.

Gomez going for the big points, of course.

:44:50.:44:54.

And Jones just keeping her composure.

:44:55.:44:57.

Under pressure, but the Olympic champion here

:44:58.:45:01.

defending her Olympic title and - wow - is she doing that well!

:45:02.:45:05.

The time for Gomez to do something - has it gone?

:45:06.:45:16.

Jade Jones there asks for a replay card.

:45:17.:45:23.

There you go, the face kick is the request,

:45:24.:45:36.

For me, I saw the head go back, but good call.

:45:37.:45:47.

Let's look at it, Jones pushing forward with her first phase.

:45:48.:45:50.

Double Olympic champion to the delight

:45:51.:46:16.

of the British fans and the Brazilian crowd.

:46:17.:46:21.

She said because of him, she found a love for the sport again.

:46:22.:46:36.

Paul Green never one to take the plaudits,

:46:37.:46:38.

but it was his charge, the Welsh Wonder, the fighter

:46:39.:46:40.

from Flint, that produced a tremendous response.

:46:41.:46:46.

Eva Calvo Gomez a superb silver, disappointed

:46:47.:46:48.

and she kept her cool - Jade Jones.

:46:49.:46:55.

She racked up the points but credit to Eva Calvo Gomez because she came

:46:56.:47:02.

back into it, she never gave up, kept coming forward.

:47:03.:47:06.

Jade Jones in the end, though, double Olympic champion.

:47:07.:47:19.

This is just absolutely phenomenal - Jade Jones, one of the stars

:47:20.:47:21.

of London 2012 has struck gold again.

:47:22.:47:24.

There is Jade Jones - this is absolutely incredible.

:47:25.:47:35.

Right, we'll go back to the taekwondo very shortly.

:47:36.:47:37.

And hear from the Olympic champion after we take you back

:47:38.:47:40.

Let's head back to the Olympic Stadium.

:47:41.:47:44.

As you can see Eilidh Doyle is about to go in the women's

:47:45.:47:47.

Doyle, Nugent, Muhammad, Peet, Spencer, Hejnova,

:47:48.:47:54.

The lanes outside her to the first barrier, she looked strong

:47:55.:48:15.

We're looking for Dalilah Muhammad in lane 3.

:48:16.:48:18.

But it's Muhammad leading at the moment.

:48:19.:48:23.

A couple of lanes outside, but Muhammad over that barrier

:48:24.:48:31.

in front as the rain starts to come down heavier still in

:48:32.:48:34.

Muhammad four or five paces clear, Doyl, a lot of ground

:48:35.:48:43.

to make up but everybody has a lot of ground to make up.

:48:44.:48:45.

Hejnova is there, Ashley Spencer trying to finish strongly

:48:46.:48:49.

but Dalilah Muhammad for the gold medal!

:48:50.:48:51.

She's fading a little bit but she crossing the line - 53.14.

:48:52.:48:58.

Petersen the silver and Ashley Spencer came

:48:59.:49:00.

But just about from the start, to the finish, Dalilah Muhammad,

:49:01.:49:08.

Sarah Petersen, you can see what the silver medal meant to her.

:49:09.:49:16.

Eilidh Doyle tried, but that was a high calibre field

:49:17.:49:19.

in front of her, and Ashley Spencer has got the bronze.

:49:20.:49:25.

And we talked about those who were coming in,

:49:26.:49:27.

with all their expectation and the pressure of being

:49:28.:49:29.

the favourites, the clear favourite as Dalilah Muhammad was here,

:49:30.:49:38.

and she delivered, and embrace from Sarah Petersen to Eilidh Doyle,

:49:39.:49:42.

two Europeans who have competed so hard against each other,

:49:43.:49:45.

but Sarah Petersen takes the silver, that was a great run,

:49:46.:49:47.

Wonderful run, but from Dalilah Muhammad it was superior.

:49:48.:49:52.

Once he puts her mind to it - Muhammad - she's so strong.

:49:53.:50:02.

She's technically, very effective and efficient.

:50:03.:50:05.

She just runs so freely, doesn't she?

:50:06.:50:08.

She doesn't seem like she's worried about any stride pattern.

:50:09.:50:11.

She's cool, calm and aggressive at the right moment.

:50:12.:50:17.

That allows you to have that lovely loping stride,

:50:18.:50:19.

The big conversation has to be Sarah Petersen,

:50:20.:50:29.

because she had a great year in the championships

:50:30.:50:33.

but I was thinking whether she could live up to that when it comes

:50:34.:50:36.

to the real deal - the Olympic Games.

:50:37.:50:42.

Doyle ran a decent race but didn't quite have the pace of the others.

:50:43.:50:45.

She's run 54.61, how does she look here, Colin?

:50:46.:50:53.

She's taken the challenge here of the stride pattern.

:50:54.:50:58.

It's one of these things you need to get groved into you earlier

:50:59.:51:01.

You're allowed to run a lot freer in circumstances like this,

:51:02.:51:05.

Right now, the stride pattern she's worked on is absolutely

:51:06.:51:09.

So there's no worries, no criticism you can give Doyle

:51:10.:51:13.

It's just this race was phenomenally fast, not just by one

:51:14.:51:19.

or two, or three people, but all the way down to sixth,

:51:20.:51:24.

there was either season's best, personal best or just fast times.

:51:25.:51:28.

As you can see, Doyle did a grand job, she couldn't do anymore under

:51:29.:51:32.

So all in all, to be in the Olympic final for her is

:51:33.:51:36.

Perhaps maybe she wanted a little bit more, but I can assure

:51:37.:51:40.

Yes, to make an Olympic final is something very special,

:51:41.:51:47.

but Dalilah Muhammad, look at her so far ahead

:51:48.:51:49.

The gold medallist, the US again, took a while to get their first

:51:50.:51:53.

track title in Rio, and when they come, they come over

:51:54.:52:02.

the hurdles, Rollins led, Clement in the men's,

:52:03.:52:04.

in the women's 400m ahead of Sarah Petersen, Ashley Spencer

:52:05.:52:08.

and Eilidh Doyle down in eighth place.

:52:09.:52:09.

The American Dalilah Muhammad, the fastest qualifier also ran

:52:10.:52:18.

There you can see Great Britain, another gold medal and we

:52:19.:52:26.

are used to seeing this - we saw it at London 2012,

:52:27.:52:29.

we're seeing it again, Jade Jones has won another gold

:52:30.:52:31.

medal, she's a double Olympic champion.

:52:32.:52:34.

Absolutely magnificent performance from Jade and she's just been

:52:35.:52:38.

Jade, a massive congratulations, you defended your Olympic title,

:52:39.:52:50.

I can't explain, I didn't realise how

:52:51.:52:54.

much pressure, like, I would feel coming into this.

:52:55.:53:04.

Like, even the first two matches, I felt pressure and intense.

:53:05.:53:10.

To pull it off and, you know, my coach,

:53:11.:53:13.

You know, the Great Britain team trained so hard, and even...

:53:14.:53:17.

You're a big part of this achievement tonight.

:53:18.:53:20.

Yeah, she delivers under pressure, I said it before, she's done it

:53:21.:53:29.

again, she's the most successful British athlete in taekwondo

:53:30.:53:31.

in history and probably ever will be.

:53:32.:53:33.

And her achievement is fantastic, double Olympic champion.

:53:34.:53:35.

Can I just say a huge thank you to the National Lottery

:53:36.:53:42.

for funding, the taxpayers that fund Jade to do the sport,

:53:43.:53:45.

and Gary Hall, legend of a boss, keeps the programme together.

:53:46.:53:48.

Absolutely made all of this possible.

:53:49.:53:49.

And Jade, you know, from your perspective,

:53:50.:53:52.

I'm sure you know, for those that don't know your journey over

:53:53.:53:55.

the last four years, hasn't been easy, coping

:53:56.:53:57.

with all of the pressure, but you turned it

:53:58.:53:59.

You know to be double Olympic champion already is crazy.

:54:00.:54:05.

And now - I just can't believe it to be honest.

:54:06.:54:09.

You know, before the competition I have been crying in the sessions.

:54:10.:54:12.

You can't see it happening because you know you're so stressed

:54:13.:54:15.

But, you know, I did it when it mattered.

:54:16.:54:21.

Very different atmosphere obviously to London 2012 with the home crowd

:54:22.:54:24.

four years ago, but massive support for you still tonight and that

:54:25.:54:27.

My family and friends, they mean the world to me.

:54:28.:54:32.

So much support win or lose, that does mean a lot.

:54:33.:54:34.

Everybody back home in Flint, I think there's like

:54:35.:54:38.

so many people in the - whatever the pub is called!

:54:39.:54:41.

It is Bolt time in just a few minutes' time.

:54:42.:56:03.

He'll be out on the track ready to run the 200m final.

:56:04.:56:06.

If he wins it, it will be his eighth Olympic gold.

:56:07.:56:09.

I was going to say historic, unprecedented.

:56:10.:56:12.

I'm fairly sure to say never to be repeated if he does it.

:56:13.:56:15.

I don't think any time soon anyone would do that.

:56:16.:56:18.

You never know what another great athlete is going to come along

:56:19.:56:21.

and be able to duplicate this sort of thing, but it

:56:22.:56:23.

This is the second part in the three-part series of Bolt

:56:24.:56:27.

trying to duplicate this feat for the third time winning the 100,

:56:28.:56:30.

I don't see anyone standing in his way tonight,

:56:31.:56:33.

but again you have to run the races and the guys aren't

:56:34.:56:36.

We saw Andre De Grasse run him to the tape.

:56:37.:56:40.

"Maybe if I do it now, and see what it feels like, I can

:56:41.:56:49.

He's on the inside and Merritt as well.

:56:50.:56:52.

They're going to factor into the medals.

:56:53.:56:55.

De Grasse says he prefers 100 to 200.

:56:56.:56:57.

And Lemaitre produced some form as well.

:56:58.:57:04.

if there another race behind Bolt, it's hard to predict

:57:05.:57:07.

Alonso Edward has been running well from Panama.

:57:08.:57:16.

Lemaitre is coming around at the right time running 20.01 this

:57:17.:57:19.

There were lot of sub-20 second times in the semifinals,

:57:20.:57:24.

that is what is going to make this a fast race.

:57:25.:57:27.

Certainly since last Saturday, Denise.

:57:28.:57:38.

It rained for about 20 minutes, about 30 minutes or so ago.

:57:39.:57:40.

The air has got cooler, a bit of a breeze.

:57:41.:57:44.

I think like Michael said, this is a forgone conclusion.

:57:45.:57:51.

You know, we saw him looking relaxed.

:57:52.:57:56.

This is such an important event for him.

:57:57.:58:00.

He wants to dominate it, and he wants to dominate it big.

:58:01.:58:07.

This could be the last time we ever see him run 200m.

:58:08.:58:10.

This is certainly the last time he's going to be on this stage,

:58:11.:58:19.

the biggest stage of all in athletics - the Olympic Games.

:58:20.:58:21.

And I'm sure he'll want to go out where a bang.

:58:22.:58:24.

He'll want to soak up the moment and really entertain the crowd.

:58:25.:58:28.

But, you know, I wonder - I know he's confident

:58:29.:58:31.

but at the same time, he has not been as dominant

:58:32.:58:34.

You got De Grasse, you got Merritt, you got Alonso Edward,

:58:35.:58:43.

all of these guys have run very, very fast with De Grasse and Merritt

:58:44.:58:47.

both running under 20 seconds, and easing up both

:58:48.:58:49.

So, you know, if Usain Bolt - obviously we know when he's

:58:50.:58:54.

at his best, no one can get close to him, but if he's not -

:58:55.:58:58.

and we know he's not his best this year, we saw that in the 100m -

:58:59.:59:01.

it could get a little bit competitive.

:59:02.:59:04.

And that - you know, that would be entertaining to see.

:59:05.:59:08.

You know, it's hard to predict at this point what sort of 200m

:59:09.:59:11.

And Adam Gemili was disappointed with his semifinal.

:59:12.:59:16.

He got through as one of the fastest losers and you were talking

:59:17.:59:20.

through yesterday his race and his shoulders were bunched up

:59:21.:59:22.

How much of a difference could it make to his time if he can

:59:23.:59:28.

just get his body right in that final straight?

:59:29.:59:30.

In fact, he wasn't good at his bend either?

:59:31.:59:33.

He was OK around the bend, what he made the mistake

:59:34.:59:38.

is on the straight and that started as soon as he came off the bend,

:59:39.:59:41.

so we're talking about a good 100m of running tight and so each one

:59:42.:59:45.

of those strides is, you know, affecting you by

:59:46.:59:50.

millimetres and milliseconds, once you made that mistake it's

:59:51.:59:52.

compounded and the effect can be massive.

:59:53.:00:00.

Then that works in the opposite direction as well.

:00:01.:00:04.

When you're more fluid, you're not slowing down as fast,

:00:05.:00:06.

everyone is slowing down at the end of that race,

:00:07.:00:12.

And that's what you want to, you do that by maintaining your

:00:13.:00:25.

relaxation, maintaining your form and technique and letting the race

:00:26.:00:27.

come to you and just letting it do what it does instead

:00:28.:00:30.

And I believe he was trying to force it and he recognised that.

:00:31.:00:35.

I was going to say the important thing -

:00:36.:00:37.

is immediately after the race, Adam said he recognised

:00:38.:00:39.

And that is so important and so all he needs to do is stay relaxed.

:00:40.:00:43.

Actually, if he runs his race, he could be in contention.

:00:44.:00:48.

Let's go down to our commentary team.

:00:49.:00:58.

CRAM: If this is to be the last of his major 200m, then hopefully

:00:59.:01:01.

he has got something special in store for us.

:01:02.:01:07.

The full start list there - Guliyev, Gemili, Edward,

:01:08.:01:11.

De Grasse, Merritt, Bolt, Lemaitre and Martina.

:01:12.:01:16.

Little bit of a strapping on his leg, the Dutchman.

:01:17.:01:30.

Well, the great gladiator into the arena,

:01:31.:01:34.

He's taken on all-comers over the last eight years

:01:35.:01:37.

Nobody's really got that close, have they?

:01:38.:01:43.

But this is a good field, the point has been made.

:01:44.:01:46.

Martina has followed Bolt through to 2012 and 2016,

:01:47.:01:57.

well done for him to be here as well.

:01:58.:01:59.

Lemaitre, rediscovering some form of old.

:02:00.:02:02.

The Frenchman who took Europe by storm in 2010

:02:03.:02:05.

LaShawn Merritt - at 200m, he's quicker than Carl Lewis.

:02:06.:02:36.

He's looking for a medal at the very least.

:02:37.:02:46.

And this massive talent from Canada - Andre De Grasse.

:02:47.:02:55.

If ever the phrase the bronzed figure of Andre De Grasse is true,

:02:56.:02:58.

he says if he's going for the world record, I'm going with him!

:02:59.:03:04.

In 2009, when Bolt ran that 19.19 world record in Berlin,

:03:05.:03:08.

this is the man who followed him home - Alonso Edward.

:03:09.:03:11.

Adam Gemili from Blackheath and Bromley Club.

:03:12.:03:25.

that would be a huge achievement here.

:03:26.:03:33.

Guliyev on the inside, running for Turkey.

:03:34.:03:37.

So every single man in this field has run under 20 seconds.

:03:38.:03:46.

So Bolt perhaps for the very last time in a major championship

:03:47.:03:55.

goes into his blocks at the start of the 200m.

:03:56.:04:02.

A journey which begun when he was just 15 years of age.

:04:03.:04:08.

What history is written, what more does he have for us?

:04:09.:04:21.

Quiet, please - Mr Bolt is about to start.

:04:22.:04:27.

De Grasse is going well around the bend as well.

:04:28.:04:32.

Gemili trying to get into the race with Edward,

:04:33.:04:34.

but it's Usain Bolt on his own

:04:35.:04:36.

Usain Bolt - running away from everybody.

:04:37.:04:43.

Running to what he loved to be immortality as an athlete.

:04:44.:04:46.

Even Usain Bolt couldn't deliver on a rainy night in Rio,

:04:47.:05:02.

but I don't think any of us expected that.

:05:03.:05:06.

Well, if that is it, if we never see him again in a 200m final,

:05:07.:05:16.

but then what we need to do is reflect on what this man has done.

:05:17.:05:26.

He took the bronze medal in the same time as Gemili.

:05:27.:05:40.

and said Gemili was being pulled through by Alonso Edward.

:05:41.:05:46.

And I'm sure he would forgive the crowd and everybody else

:05:47.:05:54.

They're all looking up at the screen and can't believe the result.

:05:55.:06:03.

De Grasse has expected the silver medal,

:06:04.:06:04.

and Lemaitre, goodness me - outside 20 seconds as well.

:06:05.:06:12.

If this is it, what on earth are we going to do without him?

:06:13.:06:20.

You know, Steve, my heart goes out to this young man - Adam Gemili.

:06:21.:06:26.

To be fourth place with exactly the same time as the bronze

:06:27.:06:30.

medallist - Christophe Lemaitre - which some would expected

:06:31.:06:36.

to have beaten coming into this competition, is going to be -

:06:37.:06:39.

oh, truly, truly a bitter, bitter pill for him to deal with.

:06:40.:06:41.

Look at his head, he cannot believe it.

:06:42.:06:50.

They'll study it and try to get a bronze medal if it's

:06:51.:07:13.

But you know, once the result goes up nowadays, they're pretty

:07:14.:07:17.

So Adam will be devastated, no doubt.

:07:18.:07:20.

But you know - he's still fourth in the world.

:07:21.:07:22.

He's got to remember that and he's got a bright,

:07:23.:07:24.

OK, so Usain Bolt, he's taken a bow and,

:07:25.:07:28.

well, family of supported him, of course, through all of that

:07:29.:07:30.

and been there on so many occasions to see him, unbelievably.

:07:31.:07:33.

And what a journey he's had us all on.

:07:34.:07:35.

Gemili was right into it up to the bend and then it was a scrap

:07:36.:07:39.

He wanted to get on Christophe Lemaitre very quickly.

:07:40.:07:48.

I think that was probably upset someone like LaShawn Merritt

:07:49.:07:52.

who wasn't expecting him to go out so hard.

:07:53.:07:57.

And Andre De Grasse said he wanted to go with Usain and

:07:58.:08:00.

To behold Usain through to that silver medal position,

:08:01.:08:08.

Many of the athletes would be disappointed with the time.

:08:09.:08:12.

They would hope that clock would have stopped at something

:08:13.:08:15.

like 19.4, 19.5, which would have dragged everybody down to a much

:08:16.:08:18.

From this side it almost would have said Martina.

:08:19.:08:28.

Lemaitre is a bit taller than the other two, might have just

:08:29.:08:31.

I was looking for closely at those lines, and it did look to me

:08:32.:08:37.

that Christophe Lemaitre had just, just, just edged it.

:08:38.:08:49.

Well, I expected a little bit faster, Colin, but the race

:08:50.:08:54.

is what it is and Bolt immediately jumped out to the lead,

:08:55.:08:57.

We knew it was going to be a race for the medals.

:08:58.:09:00.

I knew this was going to be an interesting race

:09:01.:09:06.

There you see it, just very, very tight on the line.

:09:07.:09:10.

But De Grasse followed Bolt, as he said he would.

:09:11.:09:12.

But then extremely tight on the line there.

:09:13.:09:21.

I think that Gemili, Lemaitre, couldn't have done a

:09:22.:09:24.

better job, all timed it perfectly and the results are what they are.

:09:25.:09:28.

LaShawn Merritt in the middle of the track, never was in it,

:09:29.:09:32.

didn't have the foot speed to match the rest of the guys,

:09:33.:09:34.

and tried to come through with the 400m strength in the end.

:09:35.:09:37.

Coming over from the 100m and this was a quality race.

:09:38.:09:41.

You take Bolt out of it, that was fantastic for him.

:09:42.:09:44.

But tight on the line for all of the other guys.

:09:45.:09:49.

It was a quality race just not being able to separate.

:09:50.:09:52.

You see right there - Gemili - I mean Lemaitre is ahead.

:09:53.:09:55.

I think Churandy is just a hair back from Gemili.

:09:56.:09:59.

I don't think he could have done more to get that bronze.

:10:00.:10:06.

I think he executed as well as he could.

:10:07.:10:08.

If you look at the time isn't as fast as what he ran

:10:09.:10:11.

in the semifinal, but if you look at his race and his position

:10:12.:10:15.

versus the other guys, there were guys in there who

:10:16.:10:17.

ran 19 seconds in the semifinals, like Merritt.

:10:18.:10:20.

And he was able to finish ahead of him.

:10:21.:10:24.

So around this bend, Bolt just establishes himself,

:10:25.:10:28.

Lemaitre great job, just not trying to respond to Bolt,

:10:29.:10:31.

let him go and then use the strength coming down the home

:10:32.:10:34.

I mean, seven guys all right there together.

:10:35.:10:40.

Six guys trying to all get in there for those medals.

:10:41.:10:44.

time. I would have thought - I expected Bolt to run maybe 19.6

:10:45.:10:55.

He may not be in a great a shape as we like for him or seen him

:10:56.:11:00.

in the past, but I expect the guys like LaShawn Merritt

:11:01.:11:03.

and Andre De Grasse to go under 19 seconds.

:11:04.:11:05.

Again, maybe challenge Bolt a little bit.

:11:06.:11:07.

Lemaitre 20.01 in the semifinals but none of them went

:11:08.:11:09.

LaShawn Merritt struggling there, but Bolt relieved, full of joy

:11:10.:11:16.

He has completed at least in his individual events,

:11:17.:11:21.

A fantastic performance by a fantastic and amazing competitor.

:11:22.:11:28.

Adam Gemili is with me, track-side now.

:11:29.:11:41.

Adam, we always say that's the cruellest place

:11:42.:11:43.

I know it's full of emotion for you, but what a performance

:11:44.:11:46.

I put so much into that - into that run,

:11:47.:11:51.

And I just took it so close.

:11:52.:11:54.

Makes harsher in a way, but the way you ran your race

:11:55.:12:25.

in the first Olympic time, can you begin to take some

:12:26.:12:28.

Yeah, I was on the inside, and I knew Bolt was going to go

:12:29.:12:32.

and I knew a lot of people were going to go with him,

:12:33.:12:35.

my coach and I said, let them go, be a bit more conservative,

:12:36.:12:39.

because yesterday I had a look at the race,

:12:40.:12:41.

I hit the bend really hard, save a bit for when you come

:12:42.:12:44.

into the straight and you start to go past people and I did.

:12:45.:12:47.

But it's been a fantastic season for myself and my team around me,

:12:48.:12:52.

my family, and my friends at home and my girlfriend.

:12:53.:12:54.

I have had such amazing support from everyone in the UK

:12:55.:12:57.

I want to say thank you very much to them.

:12:58.:13:00.

It means a lot. I'm just gutted I couldn't do it.

:13:01.:13:03.

Bring home a medal for GB. Yeah, it's...

:13:04.:13:05.

Colin Jackson said in commentary - 22-years-of-age,

:13:06.:13:07.

you're on the upward curve, there's so much more to come

:13:08.:13:09.

Yeah, this is what - this is the fun bit of competing,

:13:10.:13:15.

We have a big year next year in London, and I just can't wait

:13:16.:13:19.

to go out there and put this right because I'm really gutted.

:13:20.:13:22.

To miss out on an Olympic medal, fourth place is probably the worst

:13:23.:13:28.

place, it's so close and at the same time it's heartbreaking.

:13:29.:13:32.

Hopefully next year I can make it right for the team,

:13:33.:13:42.

and in my speech, we're not here to feel lanes anymore.

:13:43.:13:44.

Four Europeans in that field and Team GB and especially

:13:45.:13:47.

in the 200m, we got guys who can make the final and push.

:13:48.:13:50.

Shame didn't work out tonight. But I'll reconvene with my coach.

:13:51.:13:58.

As team captain, you have done your team proud.

:13:59.:14:00.

Well, you can see the frustration there of Adam Gemili.

:14:01.:14:10.

The reason why just missing out on a medal there - Lemaitre

:14:11.:14:18.

delighted he was, wasn't he, to just sneak that bronze.

:14:19.:14:22.

Andre De Grasse, well, he's moved away from

:14:23.:14:24.

That is Usain Bolt's slowest championship winning 200m, and,

:14:25.:14:30.

well, he knows as much as anybody else that if that is the last

:14:31.:14:33.

His eighth Olympic gold medal, of course.

:14:34.:14:42.

And just the four by 100m relay to come for the triple-triple.

:14:43.:14:46.

Usain Bolt, I imagine, number one emotion - relief.

:14:47.:14:54.

You know, this is what it's all about.

:14:55.:14:59.

I mean, as an athlete, he loves running the relay,

:15:00.:15:02.

we all love running the relays, but at the end of the day,

:15:03.:15:05.

your career is about what you do at the individual event.

:15:06.:15:08.

No matter what he has done from this point on,

:15:09.:15:18.

he's done what no one else has done, and may never do ever again,

:15:19.:15:22.

And so, yeah, I'm sure there's a tremendous amount of relief

:15:23.:15:27.

from the injuries that he suffered earlier in the year, you know,

:15:28.:15:31.

and it's been tough, his health has been something that

:15:32.:15:35.

he's had to manage much better and pay much more attention to,

:15:36.:15:40.

you know, and sort of put aside the motivation that, you know,

:15:41.:15:45.

sustained him for so long which was, "I'm going to run faster and faster

:15:46.:15:48.

and faster" and replace that with, "Now I need to cross the finish line

:15:49.:15:52.

I feel a lightning bolt coming, no, what he's doing now.

:15:53.:16:03.

What the crowd is still doing - is chanting his name

:16:04.:16:21.

Just incredible what he brings to stadiums around the world.

:16:22.:16:27.

He's been a fantastic ambassador, great athlete,

:16:28.:16:30.

And just a word on Adam Gemili as well, you know -

:16:31.:16:42.

three thousandths of a second is the difference.

:16:43.:16:44.

He hoped, he hoped and he hoped, and he looked up and realised -

:16:45.:16:53.

Fifth in the World Championships in 2013.

:16:54.:17:03.

He tore his hamstring last year, couldn't compete in Beijing.

:17:04.:17:06.

I believe that he represents a new attitude of British sprinters.

:17:07.:17:23.

I have been in this role for a very long time - since 2004 -

:17:24.:17:26.

and I remember when British sprinters weren't as hungry

:17:27.:17:29.

and weren't coming off after a disappointing race

:17:30.:17:36.

and saying, "You know, I'm disappointed, I

:17:37.:17:37.

should have done better", he was very hard on himself,

:17:38.:17:40.

That was a tough ask, but you want to see

:17:41.:17:43.

That's what - I know it's tough for him and I feel for him,

:17:44.:17:48.

but at the same time, I also can appreciate

:17:49.:17:52.

that he knows that I - I'm right there and I don't -

:17:53.:17:55.

And he will take that into next year and follow training.

:17:56.:18:02.

When he's had a year removed from his injury,

:18:03.:18:04.

That's why he's in this final, getting in on time, but being able

:18:05.:18:12.

to get himself into this final is because of his drive

:18:13.:18:15.

and determination and coming off the track and being able

:18:16.:18:17.

to articulate what he needs to improve, that will serve him well.

:18:18.:18:21.

I'd like to see that and I want to see him successful.

:18:22.:18:25.

He also has to understand, though, as well time is running out.

:18:26.:18:28.

You know, I mean, Phil said there - you're 22.

:18:29.:18:31.

Time is not quite running out but there are others coming as well.

:18:32.:18:42.

The thing is - is you want to get this done in short order,

:18:43.:18:47.

because you feed off of that momentum so the momentum

:18:48.:18:50.

I don't think he'll get a copy of that picture.

:18:51.:18:53.

No, he should, that's the motivation.

:18:54.:18:54.

Yes, part of the disappointment is those opportunities don't come

:18:55.:19:02.

I mean let's face it - that 200m race was not the quickest.

:19:03.:19:10.

We have seen so many quick ones in times gone by,

:19:11.:19:13.

he knows that to finish fourth so agonisingly close

:19:14.:19:15.

He's got to run sub-20 more consistently to be really

:19:16.:19:21.

Yes, I completely agree with you, Denise.

:19:22.:19:28.

But the whole feel, though, kind of - you get

:19:29.:19:30.

the sense that there was - that the atmosphere wasn't right

:19:31.:19:33.

for those sorts of times because no one ran under 20 seconds.

:19:34.:19:39.

So I don't know that Adam could run under 20 if Andre De Grasse didn't

:19:40.:19:42.

Usain Bolt as you can see is with Phil

:19:43.:19:46.

Can you get your head around what you have achieved?

:19:47.:19:59.

It's something that you work so hard for short years.

:20:00.:20:02.

When this moment comes, you're happy but also relieved

:20:03.:20:06.

to have done it because you really want it and so much things

:20:07.:20:09.

could have gone wrong and the fact that I came here and executed

:20:10.:20:12.

and everything worked out is a brilliant feeling.

:20:13.:20:14.

When you crossed the line, there was a bit of frustration, was there?

:20:15.:20:17.

Just I'm getting older, not as young and fresh,

:20:18.:20:27.

I'm excited I got the gold medal and that's the key thing.

:20:28.:20:32.

Tell me how you do it in spite of all the media circus, everything

:20:33.:20:37.

that goes around Usain Bolt, the man, the legend?

:20:38.:20:40.

I focus on what I need to do because I know if I don't do it,

:20:41.:20:46.

I know what I have to do, I come out and get it done,

:20:47.:20:51.

It's your last Olympics we know that.

:20:52.:20:53.

You said you won't compete in the Worlds next year,

:20:54.:20:56.

are we going to see you over the 200 again.

:20:57.:21:00.

If I run - when I come to championships, I'll only do

:21:01.:21:03.

the 100m, definitely feel like that would be the last one for me.

:21:04.:21:06.

I want to say so, but my coach has a way of trying to convince me.

:21:07.:21:13.

Personally, I think this is my last one.

:21:14.:21:16.

Usain, you have been a great champion.

:21:17.:21:17.

Always fantastic to talk to you, congratulations.

:21:18.:21:20.

I want to say to Steve, I'm going to watch, hopefully

:21:21.:21:25.

you commentate brilliantly on this one, I'm looking

:21:26.:21:27.

Of course you commentated brilliantly!

:21:28.:21:37.

He does, he listens, he's a student of sprinting,

:21:38.:21:39.

he listens to what people say, he's going to listen to what you say

:21:40.:21:42.

He said he just didn't feel right in the home straight,

:21:43.:21:46.

did you see that when you watched the race the first time?

:21:47.:21:49.

The entire field just looked like - I don't know if it was

:21:50.:21:52.

the rain or if it was the - you know, the time,

:21:53.:21:55.

I don't know what it was, but it didn't look like a really

:21:56.:21:59.

fast race to me by anyone, not just by Bolt but by anyone,

:22:00.:22:04.

and certainly Bolt ran away from this field, you can see

:22:05.:22:07.

he's starting to get a little fatigued there,

:22:08.:22:08.

I thought they were going to start coming back to him,

:22:09.:22:11.

I was looking at Bolt and saw that he's not looking as quick,

:22:12.:22:16.

he's not looking as sharp and crisp as he normally does

:22:17.:22:18.

He starts to fatigue out about 20m from the finish line,

:22:19.:22:23.

in that race he started to fatigue about 50-60m at the finish.

:22:24.:22:27.

I looked then at the rest of the field to see

:22:28.:22:29.

if they were going to respond, and they weren't able to.

:22:30.:22:36.

Christophe Lemaitre - that's the moment he realised

:22:37.:22:42.

the bronze medal was his, and what an incredible rise back

:22:43.:22:45.

to form for him, because he hasn't shown that for a couple of seasons,

:22:46.:22:48.

and there Adam Gemili, the moment he found out

:22:49.:22:50.

Just looking here again, you know, Bolt got up very

:22:51.:22:57.

quick, so did De Grasse, Merritt in the middle.

:22:58.:23:04.

We expected him to be in it but he didn't get out at all.

:23:05.:23:07.

At this point you can see already that Bolt is starting to labour

:23:08.:23:10.

and right here as well - I thought this was tough.

:23:11.:23:13.

He's kind of looking like - what's going on here?

:23:14.:23:15.

The rest of the guys couldn't respond at all to what looked

:23:16.:23:18.

So I don't know if it got a little bit cooler today.

:23:19.:23:22.

There was a rain shower before, and that could have just thrown

:23:23.:23:25.

You see Bolt already starting to grimace there,

:23:26.:23:31.

looking up at the screen which indicates he has nothing left,

:23:32.:23:34.

I don't know what else I have, hopefully these guys aren't coming.

:23:35.:23:38.

He's looking at the screen again, we have never seen him looking

:23:39.:23:43.

at the screen that much to check his position and see how

:23:44.:23:46.

much ground those guys might be making up on him but they weren't

:23:47.:23:49.

But, you know, this was fantastic for Bolt.

:23:50.:23:53.

Again, you know, amazing feeling for him, I'm sure,

:23:54.:23:58.

to know this is all over, he has stamped his, you know,

:23:59.:24:01.

He has changed a lot of what sprinting is all about,

:24:02.:24:11.

what the sports scientists say, what the coaches say and believe -

:24:12.:24:16.

and in the future, I mean he is the model by which people

:24:17.:24:20.

will judge future sprinters, people will identify

:24:21.:24:25.

talent based on, you know, some of the things that we have

:24:26.:24:28.

seen Usain Bolt do over the last eight years.

:24:29.:24:30.

Just the latest instalment in his Olympic odyssey.

:24:31.:24:32.

Looking for a fine nine, but now it's a great eight.

:24:33.:24:38.

They get away the first time but here comes Usain Bolt.

:24:39.:24:40.

Usain Bolt streaking away from the field.

:24:41.:24:42.

It's going to be gold for Jamaica, that is superb.

:24:43.:24:45.

Away they go, and Usain Bolt already going past the guys

:24:46.:24:57.

It's gold for Usain Bolt and a new world record!

:24:58.:25:02.

Usain Bolt has it in his hands safely and away that round top end.

:25:03.:25:12.

Three gold medals, three world records!

:25:13.:25:46.

Bolt is out of the blocks really well.

:25:47.:25:50.

He's already storming around the bend.

:25:51.:25:51.

And Gatlin leading it at the moment but here comes Usain Bolt.

:25:52.:26:15.

But Usain Bolt on his own as he's been throughout his career.

:26:16.:26:35.

Usain Bolt running away from everybody.

:26:36.:26:36.

So the great eight looks something like that.

:26:37.:26:53.

What an incredible haul it is and tomorrow night,

:26:54.:26:59.

it's the 4x100 metre relay, men and women and Usain Bolt will be

:27:00.:27:03.

relying on his team-mates to get the baton around to him

:27:04.:27:06.

so that he can take it home and the times that were produced

:27:07.:27:09.

today in the heats, it may well be a fight for the line?

:27:10.:27:12.

You know, the 4x100 relay, the Jamaicans aren't as strong

:27:13.:27:17.

There are some other teams that could have something there.

:27:18.:27:24.

And it is always about the exchanges but the Jamaicans, I can't remember

:27:25.:27:34.

the last time that the Jamaicans have actually dropped the baton.

:27:35.:27:36.

A lot of pressure on the guys running with him to

:27:37.:27:41.

If you were given the job of handing Usain Bolt the baton!

:27:42.:27:47.

I saw them interviewed today and I actually think

:27:48.:27:49.

They want to win equally for themselves.

:27:50.:28:00.

Yes, it is great but they are running for pride

:28:01.:28:02.

I love relay night so we have two cracking nights in store.

:28:03.:28:08.

But earlier this evening, you saw Eilidh Doyle

:28:09.:28:14.

going in the 400 metres finals here and besides Muhammad

:28:15.:28:17.

from the United States of America, it seemed like it was an open race

:28:18.:28:21.

behind and it ended up being a quick race as well because the heats

:28:22.:28:24.

in this weren't that strong, were they?

:28:25.:28:26.

There was no real indication where the medals were

:28:27.:28:35.

Obviously Muhammad strong, she's looked silky smooth

:28:36.:28:39.

It was about her and the clock tonight.

:28:40.:28:47.

I think that Eilidh Doyle had a tough ask from lane one,

:28:48.:28:50.

it was always going to be a challenge for her.

:28:51.:28:52.

She gave it everything but what happened in this race

:28:53.:28:59.

If she was in another lane but whether she had the flat speed

:29:00.:29:08.

Most of the athletes here had run faster than Eilidh had run this year

:29:09.:29:20.

so in all fairness to her, getting into this final

:29:21.:29:22.

And I think that we always knew that Muhammad and Petersen from Denmark

:29:23.:29:30.

were going to be strong as well as Ashley Spencer.

:29:31.:29:34.

Let's see her thoughts then after the race.

:29:35.:29:36.

Lane one, it was always going to be a tough ask but it seemed

:29:37.:29:46.

like you ran the race the way you wanted?

:29:47.:29:48.

Yeah, I can't really fault any of it, you know.

:29:49.:29:50.

And you know, I don't feel as disappointed as I did

:29:51.:29:58.

I came off the track last year in Beijing thinking that

:29:59.:30:01.

I may have felt like I nailed the race but I was in this today.

:30:02.:30:14.

I can't be too unhappy but obviously you always want more and you want

:30:15.:30:20.

Going forward, what do you take out of an experience like tonight?

:30:21.:30:23.

I think that I've got to look at it with my coach and analyse it and see

:30:24.:30:27.

I think that my hurdling was really good tonight so maybe just trying

:30:28.:30:34.

to work on the speed a little bit and get a little bit quicker.

:30:35.:30:38.

First of all, a big congratulations because that was a wonderful

:30:39.:30:42.

performance to crown you Olympic champion.

:30:43.:30:44.

It's one thing being the favourite and another thing to deliver

:30:45.:30:46.

My coach, he had continued to motivate me.

:30:47.:30:56.

I was feeling really tired before the race but any time that you're

:30:57.:30:59.

about to run that fast, I feel that way so I was trusting

:31:00.:31:01.

myself and believing in my abilities and I was able to come

:31:02.:31:04.

Had you ever even maybe dared to dream of what might happen

:31:05.:31:09.

I just kept praying about it and praying about it.

:31:10.:31:15.

You kind of get so overwhelmed you want to stop thinking about it

:31:16.:31:20.

and let fate take its place and play itself out.

:31:21.:31:22.

How does the reality compare to the dream?

:31:23.:31:24.

I mean, when he said that I was the first American to win

:31:25.:31:29.

Well, some pretty snappy American hurdling has helped to propel them.

:31:30.:31:44.

They were already at the top of the table

:31:45.:31:50.

Kenya behind them and then really it's just a mixture of Croatia,

:31:51.:31:58.

China, South Africa, Ethiopia.

:31:59.:32:03.

Nobody else really within reach of the top nations.

:32:04.:32:05.

Nobody is in reach of the United States of America.

:32:06.:32:07.

This has been pretty good for you guys?

:32:08.:32:11.

The US women's team is extremely strong.

:32:12.:32:18.

If you look at all of the events, the women are bringing

:32:19.:32:20.

Well said, we can't argue with that, can we?

:32:21.:32:24.

Michael has kind of admitted that we are the stronger sex!

:32:25.:32:27.

Jason Mohammed, I don't think that we can say anything else.

:32:28.:32:40.

Nothing to say here other than brilliant night yet

:32:41.:32:44.

Usain Bolt, what a sportsman and as for athletics,

:32:45.:32:49.

what does athletics or track and field, what does

:32:50.:32:53.

sport do when Usain Bolt decides to up the spikes?

:32:54.:32:55.

We are now going to talk about another Olympic champion.

:32:56.:33:03.

If you've just tuned in, maybe been on the late shift

:33:04.:33:08.

and coming in and turning on the TV, Jade Jones is the double Olympic

:33:09.:33:11.

Rising there to use the cut kick here.

:33:12.:33:45.

And there is the stabbing cut kick to the body.

:33:46.:33:52.

A little bit of a come back and a chip and a charge.

:33:53.:33:59.

That is incredible but as you said, Calvo Gomez, caught up with the same

:34:00.:34:04.

technique but has to be careful as she gets in because

:34:05.:34:07.

Enormous tension and rivalry between these two.

:34:08.:34:22.

Will it be a repeat or will it be revenge?

:34:23.:34:29.

Jones hoping for her second Olympic title.

:34:30.:34:32.

She won it with the home crowd in London.

:34:33.:34:34.

She's on the road and she's here in Rio and she's

:34:35.:34:37.

Almost scoring with that head shot and again,

:34:38.:34:40.

An excellent push point there from the Spanish fighter.

:34:41.:34:46.

Yeah, she just has to keep her head and composure, Jade Jones.

:34:47.:34:51.

There is the head shot that puts Calvo Gomez back into this one.

:34:52.:34:54.

The Spanish fighter not giving up without a fight and Calvo Gomez,

:34:55.:34:57.

Jones trying one of her own and one thing is for sure,

:34:58.:35:11.

It is an absolute classic and I think she's going

:35:12.:35:22.

to have a look and see what she's scored with earlier.

:35:23.:35:25.

Look at that, quick change of direction there.

:35:26.:35:31.

The direction of the scores has changed quickly as well.

:35:32.:35:34.

This is Olympic taekwondo at its very, very best.

:35:35.:35:42.

Both women reeling and rocking here and Jones retreats.

:35:43.:35:46.

The coaching instruction is quite clear there.

:35:47.:36:00.

Give me your best two minutes, but it was the best two minutes

:36:01.:36:11.

And she was determined to pull that deficit back and she did.

:36:12.:36:27.

The women's under 57 kg gold medal contest.

:36:28.:36:39.

Jade Jones, her opponent and you can guess what colour she's in.

:36:40.:36:44.

But what colour will they be carrying at the end.

:36:45.:36:46.

This the battle for gold or silver and Jones picks off a little

:36:47.:36:50.

8-6 now, cancelled out by Calvo Gomez.

:36:51.:36:56.

Calvo Gomez absolutely taking the fight to Jones.

:36:57.:37:07.

It's an open final and that's why it's so close.

:37:08.:37:17.

There's so much tension and an understandable impasse here.

:37:18.:37:20.

Jones goes for a head shot and she takes it.

:37:21.:37:23.

An absolute picture perfect shot there.

:37:24.:37:27.

Dropped a drop kick over the shoulder and electronic sensor

:37:28.:37:29.

in the head gear registered but one there for Calvo Gomez.

:37:30.:37:34.

Jones goes for the head again and she scores

:37:35.:37:36.

Tries the reverse turning kick, the Spanish fighter.

:37:37.:37:47.

Calvo Gomez going for the big points, of course.

:37:48.:37:55.

And Jade Jones just keeping her composure.

:37:56.:37:57.

Under pressure but the Olympic champion here, defending her Olympic

:37:58.:38:00.

And the time there for Calvo Gomez to try to do something.

:38:01.:38:16.

Jade Jones there has a look at Paul Green and asks

:38:17.:38:22.

They do and indeed, they decide to replay it.

:38:23.:38:26.

Well, could it get any more dramatic?

:38:27.:38:28.

There you go, the face kick is the request.

:38:29.:38:34.

Jones pushes forward with the first phase.

:38:35.:38:48.

The video replay unsuccessful and the score board the same.

:38:49.:38:55.

Double Olympic champion to the delight of the British fans

:38:56.:39:13.

She said that because of him, she found a love for the sport again.

:39:14.:39:31.

to take the plaudits but he takes the delight here.

:39:32.:39:35.

Double Olympic champion and it was his charge,

:39:36.:39:37.

the Welsh wonder, the fighter from Flint who produces

:39:38.:39:39.

Disappointed but beaten by a clear margin.

:39:40.:39:47.

Yes, by a clear margin and she absolutely kept

:39:48.:39:50.

Jade Jones, that was brilliant stuff.

:39:51.:39:54.

And I mean, she just racked up the points.

:39:55.:39:57.

But credit to Calvo Gomez because she came back into it.

:39:58.:40:00.

Jade Jones in the end, though, double Olympic champion.

:40:01.:40:12.

I didn't realise how much pressure I would feel coming into this.

:40:13.:40:23.

Even the first few matches, I felt so pressured and tense

:40:24.:40:26.

And you know, the Great Britain team trained so hard.

:40:27.:40:39.

You're a big part of the achievement tonight.

:40:40.:40:43.

She's the most successful British athlete in taekwondo in history

:40:44.:40:56.

and probably ever will be and the achievement is fantastic.

:40:57.:40:58.

Jade Jones! Jade Jones, Olympic champion, 2016.

:40:59.:41:29.

And she used those wonderful feet to score perfect points.

:41:30.:41:34.

And a picture perfect finish for Jade Jones.

:41:35.:41:36.

Jade Jones and she will now observe the national

:41:37.:41:44.

ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, the national

:41:45.:41:47.

It's been amazing story for Jade Jones.

:41:48.:42:46.

In a recent newspaper interview, she said that she grew up

:42:47.:42:48.

in a council house and used to have big scraps with the boys and used

:42:49.:42:52.

And shortly after being presented with the gold medal,

:42:53.:43:00.

Fresh off the podium, you now have the second

:43:01.:43:06.

From London and be Olympic champion and to do it again,

:43:07.:43:16.

I felt like I had so much pressure coming in.

:43:17.:43:19.

I didn't realise how much it would be.

:43:20.:43:21.

How different was that pressure from four years ago

:43:22.:43:25.

because going in there as the defending champion, everyone

:43:26.:43:27.

I didn't actually realise how much pressure it would be.

:43:28.:43:32.

It was only until today that I thought, "woah,

:43:33.:43:35.

this is a lot of pressure" and just like pressure on myself

:43:36.:43:38.

because I know that I'm the best, but in taekwondo, it doesn't always

:43:39.:43:41.

And I've trained so hard for four years.

:43:42.:43:48.

And you know, I just wanted to win and to finally do

:43:49.:43:51.

You've spoken so much about how your life changed

:43:52.:43:55.

and your profile went through the roof after London 2012.

:43:56.:43:58.

You've had to change your style and adapt and went

:43:59.:44:02.

from being the hunter, very much to the hunted.

:44:03.:44:04.

Yeah, and I don't think that people realise how hard it is.

:44:05.:44:08.

And my coach, Paul Green, he has his training all the time

:44:09.:44:17.

and although we moan, that's what works.

:44:18.:44:21.

And I've got him to thank for it and just all my family and friends.

:44:22.:44:24.

And all my family that come here and everybody

:44:25.:44:26.

And the support has just been amazing.

:44:27.:44:32.

And you know in Brazil and I've only got ten family members but the whole

:44:33.:44:36.

stadium were cheering again and it's just unbelievable.

:44:37.:44:38.

An absolutely incredible achievement.

:44:39.:44:39.

Hold up the gold medal and everybody back home what it means?

:44:40.:44:42.

That is amazing and knowing Flint as I do, they will be dancing

:44:43.:44:51.

on the streets there, let me tell you that.

:44:52.:44:53.

They'll be having a few quiet cheeky beers tonight

:44:54.:44:55.

Jade Jones and her Twitter profile, she's got 55,000 followers the last

:44:56.:45:02.

time that I looked and it says on her bio, "I kick people

:45:03.:45:05.

in the head for a living and I love it" and she's a double

:45:06.:45:08.

Well done, and that is a remarkable story.

:45:09.:45:12.

Let's bring you up to date with all of today's headlines.

:45:13.:45:20.

As if it was ever in doubt, Usain Bolt claims the eighth Olympic

:45:21.:45:23.

gold medal in victory in the 200 metres in a race that he said

:45:24.:45:27.

afterwards could well be his last ever major championship.

:45:28.:45:29.

Britain finished fourth, just 3,000ths of a second shy.

:45:30.:45:41.

Alastair Brownlie led home brother Jonny for the triathlon

:45:42.:45:45.

and made him the first man to retain the title.

:45:46.:45:48.

The first brothers to win Olympic gold and silver

:45:49.:45:50.

After being frustrated by the weather yesterday,

:45:51.:45:57.

Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark were finally able to celebrate.

:45:58.:46:02.

A thrilling silver medal for Liam Heath and Schofield.

:46:03.:46:16.

They got it in a photo finish to upgrade the bronze they won

:46:17.:46:19.

And Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge earn the first

:46:20.:46:29.

Olympic badminton medal for 12 years for the play-off matches

:46:30.:46:33.

We would absolutely love it if you stay with us here on BBC One.

:46:34.:46:54.

We're going to take you now to the women's wrestling.

:46:55.:46:57.

Erica Elizabeth Vaby against Kazakhstan

:46:58.:46:59.

Now we move to the gold medal match in the women's 53 kg wrestling

:47:00.:47:15.

Yoshida has only been beaten twice in her career.

:47:16.:47:38.

And is unbeaten since 2012 and even before 2012.

:47:39.:47:52.

That's the immense hurdle that has to be overcome

:47:53.:48:02.

Almost willing to concede the point there.

:48:03.:48:47.

Yoshida's now got the one point advantage.

:48:48.:48:51.

The referee deemed Marulize wasn't active enough in that preceding two

:48:52.:48:54.

15 seconds to go until the end of the first period.

:48:55.:49:09.

Even a period of wrestling which we can describe as cat

:49:10.:49:15.

Maroulis, after the violation and dropped the point,

:49:16.:49:27.

she did start to go for it a little bit more in the last

:49:28.:49:30.

Whether that will lead to something channelling into the next period

:49:31.:49:38.

or not we'll have to wait and see but wouldn't be surprised to see

:49:39.:49:42.

Second period under way in the gold medal match in the women's 53 kg

:49:43.:49:53.

Yoshida of Japan in the red and Maroulis

:49:54.:49:58.

Yoshida trying to become the sixth athlete in Olympic history to win

:49:59.:50:06.

individual gold medal at four consecutive gold medals.

:50:07.:50:09.

Now Maroulis is going to get the points down there.

:50:10.:50:16.

Great play and she's not done with yet.

:50:17.:50:21.

The referee says - let's go back to the centre, we're out of play.

:50:22.:50:30.

Just something about the way that Maroulis came out

:50:31.:50:32.

Now the Japanese wrestler needs to come from a deficit.

:50:33.:50:44.

Maroulis has defended superbly in this competition so far

:50:45.:50:59.

but Yoshida has all of that experience.

:51:00.:51:01.

Remember, she's not been defeated in four years of competition.

:51:02.:51:03.

Has only been defeated twice in her career.

:51:04.:51:07.

She's a 13-time World Champion, Yoshida, and has won three

:51:08.:51:10.

Maroulis has got the advantage with just over 90 seconds to play.

:51:11.:51:23.

Well, what this might come down to now is Maroulis managing

:51:24.:51:35.

Being able to be defensive enough while still staying active.

:51:36.:51:41.

Yoshida, she will bide her time for a bit longer.

:51:42.:51:48.

There will be absolutely no panic from her.

:51:49.:51:54.

But at some point, she's going to have to flick the switch,

:51:55.:51:57.

That's another point to the American.

:51:58.:52:12.

That was really important because it requires a much bigger

:52:13.:52:31.

Moving into the final 45 seconds of the bout.

:52:32.:52:37.

So this is going to be interesting with 30 seconds left

:52:38.:52:40.

She's got 28 seconds left to create some history

:52:41.:53:00.

at the Olympic Games, Yoshida.

:53:01.:53:02.

And match her compat riate from earlier in the wrestling programme.

:53:03.:53:10.

Ten seconds remaining and it's looking doubtful.

:53:11.:53:20.

Maroulis just nine seconds away from an amazing win.

:53:21.:53:28.

For the first time in over four years, Yoshida is beaten.

:53:29.:53:39.

And Maroulis of the United States has created a big

:53:40.:53:43.

An unbelievable win against one of the greatest

:53:44.:53:51.

And she's done it on the big est stage.

:53:52.:53:58.

A gold medal match at the Olympic Games.

:53:59.:54:03.

Maroulis, the 24-year-old from Colorado Springs

:54:04.:54:07.

She falls one agonising time short on four consecutive gold

:54:08.:54:22.

The winner - Helen Maroulis of the United States.

:54:23.:54:32.

Yoshida of Japan has to settle for the silver medal.

:54:33.:54:41.

You'd have to say on reflection that Maroulis was in control

:54:42.:54:44.

Much as we have to admit, I guess the majority of the fans

:54:45.:54:52.

here and worldwide perhaps would have loved to have seen

:54:53.:54:54.

It has to be one of the most sensational examples of match

:54:55.:55:02.

management and of handling the occasion that you could ever

:55:03.:55:06.

Time for the gold medal bout in the 63 kg weight class

:55:07.:55:22.

Time for the gold medal bout in the 63kg weight class

:55:23.:55:36.

as Mamashuk of Belarus takes on Kaway of Japan.

:55:37.:56:08.

And this was the event dominated by Icho until the change

:56:09.:56:11.

of weights and the number of events post London 2012.

:56:12.:56:13.

So this is a big, big one for Risako Kawai and she's wasting

:56:14.:56:16.

Picking up the two points very early on there.

:56:17.:56:25.

The 21-year-old from Japan has secured another gold medal for Japan

:56:26.:57:34.

Well, she controlled that one throughout.

:57:35.:57:37.

That explosive start set the standards.

:57:38.:57:40.

Well, we have seen him lifted up on the shoulders there.

:57:41.:57:49.

We've not seen him thrown down there!

:57:50.:57:52.

That's a bit harsh on the coach there.

:57:53.:57:54.

Two extremely well matched competitors.

:57:55.:58:38.

Massive risks will have to be taken in order to secure

:58:39.:58:41.

Just a question of who can execute the risks most successfully

:58:42.:58:45.

and who is willing to be the most attacking here.

:58:46.:58:47.

The last thing that you want in a gold medal contest is to lose

:58:48.:58:51.

Manyurova has been so close to winning big competitions.

:58:52.:59:07.

She's been a long campaigner in the sport of women's

:59:08.:59:10.

She too will not want to give up the opportunity easily.

:59:11.:59:26.

Coming up to the 90 second mark in this first period of two.

:59:27.:59:29.

This is a big moment in this gold medal match.

:59:30.:59:44.

Wiebe desperately trying to keep her opponent

:59:45.:59:46.

And that is some escape by Kazakhstan's Manyurova.

:59:47.:00:08.

Any threat that her opponent may go for.

:00:09.:00:13.

Just went for the legs there and Manyurova there.

:00:14.:00:15.

But Wiebe backing away and down to the legs there.

:00:16.:00:18.

Just batting that one off there really skilfully.

:00:19.:00:20.

Manyurova, her stamina is coming under question.

:00:21.:00:21.

The attack must be running there and she's certainly looking

:00:22.:00:24.

fatigued as we enter the last 20 seconds.

:00:25.:00:28.

Just 14 seconds away from gold Canada.

:00:29.:00:48.

Erica Wiebe on the cusp here of winning Canada's gold

:00:49.:00:50.

medal here in the women's freestyle wrestling.

:00:51.:00:55.

Erica Wiebe, the 27-year-old world number two Commonwealth Games

:00:56.:01:06.

gold-medallist from two years ago in Glasgow has gone to the top

:01:07.:01:12.

Another very entertaining night in the wrestling.

:01:13.:01:24.

We've seen some wonderful celebrations in the wrestling.

:01:25.:01:26.

That is the scene at the beach volleyball arena.

:01:27.:01:29.

Slightly drizzly out there tonight which is rather unfortunate,

:01:30.:01:33.

but it is the men's gold medal match that we will be bringing you live

:01:34.:01:36.

Before we go any further, let's bring you right up to date

:01:37.:01:46.

with this swimming story which is developing

:01:47.:01:48.

No doubt you'll have read about it in the newspapers and probably heard

:01:49.:01:54.

about it on television and radio involving four Olympic swimmers

:01:55.:01:57.

from the US team, most notably Ryan Lochte.

:01:58.:01:59.

In the past half an hour, the US Olympic Committee

:02:00.:02:01.

It is quite long so I'll just pick out the various

:02:02.:02:07.

But basically, what the US OC CEO Scott Blackman has said

:02:08.:02:15.

"Two US swimmers have given statements to local authorities

:02:16.:02:20.

today on that incident that occurred first on Sunday.

:02:21.:02:26.

The passports have been released and they have just departed Rio.

:02:27.:02:29.

After providing a statement earlier in the weeks", you will remember

:02:30.:02:34.

After providing a statement earlier in the weeks, you will remember

:02:35.:02:37.

"He provided a revised statement this evening with the hope

:02:38.:02:40.

of securing the release of his passport

:02:41.:02:42.

So the statement goes on to say, "This is what happened, they

:02:43.:02:47.

Four athletes "left France house early in the morning on August

:02:48.:02:54.

14 in a taxi heading to the Olympic village.

:02:55.:02:57.

They stopped at a gas station to use the rest room.

:02:58.:02:59.

One of the athletes committed an act of vandalism which obviously wasn't

:03:00.:03:02.

Basically, an argument ensued then between the athletes and two armed

:03:03.:03:09.

gas station security staff who displayed the weapons.

:03:10.:03:13.

Ordered the athletes from the vehicle and demanded that

:03:14.:03:18.

Once the security officials received money from the athlete,

:03:19.:03:24.

This is the key part and this is what will be

:03:25.:03:29.

reported on television and radio and newspapers.

:03:30.:03:30.

"The behaviour of athletes from the US team is not acceptable.

:03:31.:03:33.

It does not represent the values of Team USA or the conduct

:03:34.:03:36.

We will further review the matter and any potential consequences

:03:37.:03:41.

for the athletes when we return to the United States.

:03:42.:03:45.

On behalf of the US Olympic Committee," says the statement,

:03:46.:03:48.

"We apologise to our wonderful hosts in Rio.

:03:49.:03:51.

Also to the people of Brazil for this distracting ordeal

:03:52.:03:55.

in the midst of what should rightly be a celebration of excellence."

:03:56.:04:01.

"With three days remaining in the Olympic Games,

:04:02.:04:03.

the primary focus is supporting the athletes who are still competing

:04:04.:04:07.

in the Olympic Games and celebrating the achievements of those

:04:08.:04:09.

Let's have a look at some of the newspapers and how they're

:04:10.:04:17.

This is the New York Post and this is a really interesting headline.

:04:18.:04:21.

That is Ryan Lochte "the Ugly American".

:04:22.:04:26.

That is a popular newspaper in the United States.

:04:27.:04:34.

And obviously some of the newspapers will not be running the statement

:04:35.:04:43.

"Swimmers trashed gas station potty."

:04:44.:04:51.

"Rio cops seek indictment for Ryan pal, lies".

:04:52.:04:53.

There you are, you're completely up to date with the Lochte and US

:04:54.:04:56.

Now let's go to the sport and we'll show you what happened

:04:57.:05:08.

in the women's ten metre platform final.

:05:09.:06:05.

Whatever happens this evening, they will be having one heck of a party.

:06:06.:06:20.

The gold match is getting underway. The final match of the Beach

:06:21.:06:22.

Volleyball Arena tournament in Rio 2016 is underway. Italy in the

:06:23.:06:34.

white. Having a challenge on the first point.

:06:35.:06:55.

You can see the finger moved back. Bruno, there was no doubt in his

:06:56.:07:14.

mind it was a touch. So dialled in. That is some power. He opened it up

:07:15.:07:24.

right away with his heat. He likes to chip his way into matches,

:07:25.:07:31.

shooting his way in. What an atmosphere, listen to this.

:07:32.:07:43.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Yes! Wow! We will have some of this.

:07:44.:07:52.

They have set the bar high to start this meant's gold-medal match.

:07:53.:08:01.

Fantastic big. What a get by Bruno. Right when you think the cert is

:08:02.:08:05.

over and it is trouble and the mammoth will take care of business,

:08:06.:08:14.

Paolo Nicolai, put it in the back corner.

:08:15.:08:24.

As did up. We are going for another challenge. They will argue the ball

:08:25.:08:34.

Bruno cut short but it was down, it hit the sand. But Paolo Nicolai

:08:35.:08:45.

creates that play and Lupo gets just under it. Hard to tell from that

:08:46.:08:55.

camera angle. It really is. But that cut shot was dirty. Another

:08:56.:09:14.

challenge coming. The challenge coming in here, but they weren't

:09:15.:09:19.

allowed to challenge the last one. Yes, they are restricted on their

:09:20.:09:22.

challengers, if it is a judgment call. Our handsets, or ball down,

:09:23.:09:29.

ball up. Those are judgment calls by the rectories, they are not allowed

:09:30.:09:36.

to challenge. That one, the ball in, ball out, you can challenge. Ball

:09:37.:09:41.

touch and net is false, they are allowed. But double contact on a

:09:42.:09:50.

set, those are not. The rain is falling here at Copacabana, and it

:09:51.:09:55.

is a shame because this is such a fantastic competition. Not seen the

:09:56.:10:02.

leader-macro seem to dampen the enthusiasm from the crowd. But if

:10:03.:10:08.

that continues the way it is going, it won't. Not what we were expecting

:10:09.:10:15.

to be viewing for a Beach Volleyball Arena in Brazil on Copacabana Beach.

:10:16.:10:20.

But we will play Beach Volleyball Arena night in the rain.

:10:21.:10:44.

The time-out usually employed to try and take the heat out

:10:45.:10:47.

Well, the service fault from Paola Nicolai is the result

:10:48.:10:50.

The thing with an atmosphere like this from the Italian

:10:51.:11:01.

perspective, is they will either get swamped or it will lift them to such

:11:02.:11:05.

levels that Brazil will have a real job on their hands.

:11:06.:11:16.

Some people thrive on the road, some people thrive at home.

:11:17.:11:23.

It would be interesting to see how they interact with the crowd.

:11:24.:11:26.

In previous matches, he's been geeing them up,

:11:27.:11:28.

We haven't seen any of that.

:11:29.:11:30.

Flapping his arms.

:11:31.:11:49.

He's getting them involved again!

:11:50.:12:00.

Well, that is the result of the first block.

:12:01.:12:10.

They went higher and harder with the second set,

:12:11.:12:12.

or higher with the second set, harder with the second spike.

:12:13.:12:15.

Great cover by Nicolai out of that block, but his arm just

:12:16.:12:18.

They are setting it nice and close to the net.

:12:19.:12:46.

These balls are starting to get wet, so balls that you can

:12:47.:12:51.

get a real sticky good touch on are going to get

:12:52.:12:54.

Having a discussion with the referee.

:12:55.:13:30.

Let me get my second opportunity here and let the big guy

:13:31.:13:40.

Somehow he gets the right hand to it!

:13:41.:14:06.

Lupo seems to have the right tension in his muscles, I guess,

:14:07.:14:09.

is what I'm trying to say, just enough looseness and fluidity

:14:10.:14:15.

to it, and off tension to where he's getting balls up

:14:16.:14:18.

Gets his first block of the match and the crowd

:14:19.:14:32.

It was just a matter of time until you get that first

:14:33.:14:42.

Brazil have come from 1-5 down to 9-7, 9-8 up, sorry.

:14:43.:15:18.

Not only is he a wonderful defender, but his transition attack,

:15:19.:15:26.

he's got to be 1.5 or two metres off the net.

:15:27.:15:45.

Sometimes you come into the gold matches and we have discussed it

:15:46.:15:48.

Sometimes the match never really lives up to that expectation.

:15:49.:15:57.

Just the fact that Italy went out to a 5-1

:15:58.:16:01.

Every match takes on a life of its own.

:16:02.:16:07.

It is a riddle that needs to be solved, it is a matter of who has

:16:08.:16:11.

the wherewithal and the presence of mind to solve that riddle

:16:12.:16:13.

As much as you can prepare your side of the net, you never know

:16:14.:16:32.

what's going to show up on the other side.

:16:33.:16:36.

Looking at those super slow-mos, yep!

:16:37.:16:40.

You go too close to the net, that man invariably gets up

:16:41.:16:45.

Technical time-outs, when the total points get to 21,

:16:46.:17:22.

and it's the closest it can be, a one-point lead

:17:23.:17:25.

Another play out of the block by Lupo, tries to just

:17:26.:18:04.

touch it, play it back, give him another chance.

:18:05.:18:06.

I tell you what, it is a good job there is no roof on the stadium,

:18:07.:18:12.

I don't mean it because I like seeing people getting wet,

:18:13.:18:15.

but otherwise everyone would have hearing

:18:16.:18:16.

The noise in here is absolutely incredible!

:18:17.:18:35.

It isn't going anywhere, I don't think.

:18:36.:18:45.

Lupo opened up his shoulders to the line.

:18:46.:18:50.

Kind of a bit of a decoy and then chopped across cross-body.

:18:51.:18:54.

If his hat falls into the net, is that a net violation?

:18:55.:19:07.

You give that guy too many chances, he's going to find

:19:08.:19:23.

And then wonderful placement on about a 60% swing.

:19:24.:19:38.

All that effort by Nicolai comes to nothing.

:19:39.:19:42.

But it just adds to the drama of the occasion.

:19:43.:19:51.

This time, he gets his reward.

:19:52.:19:52.

Certain things like how many times you jump, of course,

:19:53.:19:56.

All those type of things leave the mind.

:19:57.:20:00.

You leave it all out there, no question.

:20:01.:20:03.

But the energy that you are exerting per play

:20:04.:20:06.

Nicolai, for all his defensive efforts, had only got one successful

:20:07.:20:17.

They are a triumphant crowd to please, the stats people!

:20:18.:20:23.

It has to be for point for it to count as a block.

:20:24.:20:29.

It is, especially the way both of these teams are covering.

:20:30.:20:34.

The one thing that they don't have to contend with here tonight

:20:35.:20:54.

that the women had to contend with last night is the wind.

:20:55.:20:56.

The wind at least isn't strong and that makes for a fairer game,

:20:57.:21:00.

if you like, more consistent flight to the ball.

:21:01.:21:06.

The women were dealing with some howling winds, and the side that

:21:07.:21:10.

Alison and Bruno are on now has been pretty consistently "the bad side".

:21:11.:21:15.

The more difficult, yes, yes, yes.

:21:16.:21:21.

Good side, good side is what we tell ourselves!

:21:22.:21:32.

As much as they had to embrace the wind and make it their friend,

:21:33.:21:38.

same thing tonight, they have got to embrace the rain and make

:21:39.:21:41.

it their friend, get real comfortable with it.

:21:42.:21:47.

The pendulum starts to sway again towards Italy.

:21:48.:22:07.

Then Italy having to make up a three-point deficit.

:22:08.:22:17.

Well, they have it back to one.

:22:18.:22:22.

They have it back to all square, although it will be one if it's

:22:23.:22:31.

Brazil's side out, but that is an error.

:22:32.:22:39.

He is drinking in the air, isn't he?

:22:40.:22:49.

After a ball like that, to harness that adrenaline and go

:22:50.:23:28.

back and serve a float serve from that guy's size

:23:29.:23:31.

is like shooting a free throw after laying

:23:32.:23:33.

Big points from now to the end of the first set.

:23:34.:24:08.

We are going to get set points from here on in.

:24:09.:24:20.

Heaven's above, she has that one wrong.

:24:21.:24:34.

Not too dissimilar to the one hit earlier.

:24:35.:24:35.

They have to be going for each other's high hands.

:24:36.:24:41.

They are both playing at such a high level.

:24:42.:24:43.

Make them think about it, just a little bit longer.

:24:44.:24:57.

They just want them to think about it.

:24:58.:24:59.

Nothing said between the Italian pair.

:25:00.:25:03.

I mean, not just within the score, and we have been going point

:25:04.:25:08.

for point, but they know each other extremely well.

:25:09.:25:12.

They are running down balls, they are all in the right place.

:25:13.:25:14.

They are challenging each other in very similar ways.

:25:15.:25:40.

Set point number one is all they need!

:25:41.:25:42.

They are halfway to the gold medal!

:25:43.:25:45.

This would put a dampener on the crowd's enthusiasm.

:25:46.:25:52.

Didn't see anything, no, it's the ball into the net.

:25:53.:26:08.

But they are halfway to the gold medal.

:26:09.:26:16.

Opening set goes Brazil's way - 21-19.

:26:17.:26:18.

Brazil get this second set under way.

:26:19.:26:38.

A good dig from Bruno and good reaction on the

:26:39.:26:46.

Lupo remembered what scored for him earlier in set number one and goes

:26:47.:26:53.

Stays with it, stays aggressive, even though Bruno sent that

:26:54.:26:57.

That makes me cringe every time a ball that close goes

:26:58.:27:44.

up, because these guys are going so fast.

:27:45.:27:46.

Doesn't have eyes in the back of his head.

:27:47.:27:54.

What great placement by Alison!

:27:55.:28:04.

I think they were going for the net challenge anyway.

:28:05.:28:16.

You've got to do it the middle of the rally.

:28:17.:28:19.

But thank God that Nicolai was there.

:28:20.:28:25.

So Danielo Lupo not endearing himself.

:28:26.:29:00.

Lupo stopped the play, as the players are instructed,

:29:01.:29:03.

If there is something that is happening during the live

:29:04.:29:09.

If you feel that it happened, you request the challenge.

:29:10.:29:14.

So, Lupo went to request the challenge, so he...

:29:15.:29:17.

They didn't blow the whistle, which I is why Alison swung away,

:29:18.:29:27.

Nicolai finished the play, so he felt there was

:29:28.:29:29.

So, as the play's continuing, Lupo called for the challenge.

:29:30.:29:44.

Like you say, though, if he challenges, he has

:29:45.:29:54.

See, their whistle timing is completely disrupted now.

:29:55.:30:04.

They didn't whistle to stop the play.

:30:05.:30:08.

The ball was down out of the block.

:30:09.:30:11.

You do not want to see something like that influence

:30:12.:30:19.

They didn't blow their whistle in time.

:30:20.:30:37.

It was only Lupo that stopped his play.

:30:38.:30:40.

Alison, Bruno, Nicolai, everybody was still on the play.

:30:41.:30:47.

Then they wanted to ask about the video challenge.

:30:48.:32:07.

Some energy about the Italian pair right now, isn't there?

:32:08.:32:10.

It is kind of both of the teams just exchange, exchange, and...

:32:11.:32:23.

Final point for the technical time-out.

:32:24.:32:25.

Brazil go in on a high with an Alison block,

:32:26.:32:28.

It is like they have an extra fifth gear.

:32:29.:32:41.

Just a spin on his heels and off he goes to the bench.

:32:42.:32:47.

He spent, what, a couple of points in the first set getting

:32:48.:32:53.

Now, it's about him and his partner getting over the line

:32:54.:32:58.

Great angle that shot of the spike cross-court.

:32:59.:34:33.

Little miscommunication on the Brazilian side.

:34:34.:34:40.

Bruno just doesn't get balls up he puts such a spin on it,

:34:41.:35:22.

he has such incredible ball control that he...

:35:23.:35:25.

His timing almost spun that back into control for Alison to set.

:35:26.:35:33.

There is so much more than him just flying around digging balls

:35:34.:35:36.

Nothing Lupo can do about that in the back corner, as it comes off

:35:37.:35:50.

There has to be an adjustment by the Italians soon,

:35:51.:35:54.

Perhaps a show and take from Nicolai.

:35:55.:36:11.

But Alison scored the last three in the same spot.

:36:12.:36:22.

Finds the mark and they are in front!

:36:23.:36:25.

They are in front for the first time

:36:26.:36:27.

What a time to come up with the point on your own serve!

:36:28.:36:46.

Again, he gets that jump-search going!

:36:47.:36:49.

That pushback that Lupo is looking for isn't quite there.

:36:50.:36:57.

I don't know if that set is too tight for him.

:36:58.:37:02.

But it looks like he's predetermining it and that's what's

:37:03.:37:05.

getting him in trouble, rather than let it be a bail-out.

:37:06.:37:13.

Well, that is a good serving session from Bruno.

:37:14.:37:31.

Because they are in front now from 13-14 to 14-16.

:37:32.:37:39.

Alison seems to have the bit between his teeth.

:37:40.:37:41.

His conversion rate is out of this world!

:37:42.:38:38.

It is silly sometimes the plays that those guys come up with.

:38:39.:38:57.

Because Lupo drops that cut shot that's...

:38:58.:39:03.

Buckle under home expectation and home pressure.

:39:04.:39:18.

But when the chips have been done in this second set,

:39:19.:39:21.

Alison and Bruno have responded and responded

:39:22.:39:22.

They have called a time-out as Alison makes the block.

:39:23.:39:45.

I don't think words do any justice to those two.

:39:46.:39:56.

They shouldn't get too far ahead of themselves because this Italian

:39:57.:40:39.

side can easily turn this 2-point gap around.

:40:40.:40:41.

But that red flag does now signal the fact that we have three match

:40:42.:40:47.

points to Brazil, and now we are one

:40:48.:40:52.

Brazil win their first gold medal in beach volleyball in the men's

:40:53.:41:26.

competition since Ricciardo and Emanuel in 2004.

:41:27.:41:29.

This is what they want and what they came for!

:41:30.:41:32.

Danielo Lupo is arguing the toss, but it's not going to change

:41:33.:41:35.

Alison and Bruno have delivered gold for Brazil on Copacabana Beach

:41:36.:41:45.

They have defeated a spirited Italian side in straight

:41:46.:41:52.

Three gold medals in London 2012, it is five here at home. That is what

:41:53.:43:08.

it means to win the gold medal in your home country in the Copacabana

:43:09.:43:11.

beach. I bet when they dreamt of winning

:43:12.:43:12.

the gold medal in the beach volleyball they never thought

:43:13.:43:24.

they would be doing it in the rain. Another great day here at the Rio

:43:25.:44:12.

Olympics. Another gold medal for Jade Jones. Goodbye for now.

:44:13.:44:25.
