N'Gapeth to serve. On any other day, Zaytsev would not have found that

:00:00.:00:24.

funny but he has still got six points to play with, he and his

:00:25.:00:26.

team. Where is this man is loving every

:00:27.:01:06.

second. Vicious serve. And finished! Giannelli straight into play and

:01:07.:01:14.

finished it, didn't need a set. Grebennikov did it for him. And

:01:15.:01:18.

Italy are on my way. Four more points for a complete rout of the

:01:19.:01:20.

European champions. Even the spike... Well, it dropped

:01:21.:01:29.

out of court. Can France pull something miraculous

:01:30.:01:49.

out of this? Foot fault called by the second

:01:50.:01:57.

official. This game is sliding, sliding away,

:01:58.:02:15.

slipping through their grasp. France are three points away from a three

:02:16.:02:17.

set drubbing. Lanza served. How France could do with powerful

:02:18.:02:44.

serves. Beautiful finished, Piano, the beautiful blocker in Centre

:02:45.:02:53.

Court. Antonov comes on to serve. Can he do better than his two

:02:54.:02:58.

previous attempts that have gone out? Two points away from victory.

:02:59.:03:14.

Tillie blocked, and it has worked for Italy! Tillie thought he was

:03:15.:03:26.

through, that part worked but the block was perfect by the Italian

:03:27.:03:28.

captain, and it is match point. France are staring into the abyss.

:03:29.:03:44.

Italy are about to rejoice. Is it in a a ace? The French cannot believe

:03:45.:03:57.

it, they've been utterly overwhelmed. Less than a month ago,

:03:58.:04:05.

triumphant, they beat Italy 3-0, they spanked them. But here the boot

:04:06.:04:10.

has been on the other foot and Italy have been absolutely supreme from

:04:11.:04:14.

the moment they took a 9-0 lead in the first set they have not stepped

:04:15.:04:23.

off the accelerator. And France have been soundly, soundly beaten.

:04:24.:04:36.

you can see exactly what it means for them to get off to a fantastic

:04:37.:04:44.

start. The 3-0 win over France. France have work to do if they are

:04:45.:04:49.

to reach up to their standard. Italy get off with a fantastic win. Now,

:04:50.:04:54.

let's bring you up to date a little bit with the fencing because earlier

:04:55.:05:01.

we saw Great Britain's James Andrew Davies in the men's foil, and he got

:05:02.:05:09.

off to a good start, he moves on to the next part of the competition.

:05:10.:05:14.

So, fantastic start to proceedings for James Andrew Davies. And we've

:05:15.:05:21.

got more fencing for you actually. Here is what is coming up in the

:05:22.:05:23.

rest of the programme. We've got more men's foil for you.

:05:24.:05:39.

Laurence Halsted representing GB, he will be representing in the fencing.

:05:40.:05:57.

And we will see the judo. We're hoping to bring you some canoe

:05:58.:06:01.

slalom because David Florence is the men's world number one in the C1.

:06:02.:06:05.

However, because of the wind, we've talked to about the weather in Rio,

:06:06.:06:13.

things have been postponed just for a minute. And we will be going down

:06:14.:06:19.

to Diadora to see the eventing. William Fox-Pitt doing well. Pippa

:06:20.:06:24.

Funnell is in the eventing and we will see her in the dressage. Down

:06:25.:06:32.

here on the Olympic Park, I'm glad to say that the American that we

:06:33.:06:39.

showed you, Mark, he got 's off into the handball Arena! That is the

:06:40.:06:43.

power of the BBC and the power of everyone of you at home. Now we will

:06:44.:06:48.

move on to fencing. It takes place the Carioca Arena. It takes place in

:06:49.:06:57.

the Carioca Arena number three. That is where it is taking place right

:06:58.:07:03.

now. We will feature Laurence Halsted, his parents were fences as

:07:04.:07:07.

well so there was always going to be a possibility he would represent

:07:08.:07:11.

Great Britain as well. Let's head on into Carioca Arena number three and

:07:12.:07:21.

join our commentators Graham Bell. It is a false start. The referee

:07:22.:07:33.

unhappy but they are now on God. -- en garde. Yes, he's absolutely

:07:34.:07:45.

electric when he is on form. He's finishing with a closing

:07:46.:07:49.

continuation of the attack. Gets on the front foot immediately, as

:07:50.:07:54.

you've seen, likes to disrupt. Laurence Halsted is pretty good

:07:55.:08:03.

defensive as well. He didn't quite get it on, happy to use the full

:08:04.:08:11.

length of the pizza he can complement his attacking style.

:08:12.:08:15.

Expect this one to go up and down, end to end stuff, a footballing

:08:16.:08:25.

analogy. Chen takes the lead. It is the first to 15. Three minute bouts

:08:26.:08:31.

with a one-minute rest in between the periods. This one, I suspect,

:08:32.:08:36.

might not go the distance of the carry on at this pace. Yes, it is

:08:37.:08:42.

frenetic and at the moment, it is Chen who has started the better,

:08:43.:08:46.

getting a couple of close distance hits. The referee will look at the

:08:47.:08:55.

video. He has given nothing there, unable to separate. Sometimes at

:08:56.:08:59.

close quarters it is difficult to see even on the replay. Chen gets

:09:00.:09:08.

another one. If you're new to fencing, if just the one coloured

:09:09.:09:11.

light comes on, there's a good chance that is an infringement. If

:09:12.:09:18.

there are two coloured lights coming on, then both fences are hit on

:09:19.:09:23.

target. There is another single light on for Chen. If two lights

:09:24.:09:27.

come on, the referee has to decide whose turn it was to attack. Who had

:09:28.:09:33.

the right of way. If a non-coloured light comes on, and off target like,

:09:34.:09:39.

that is a hit off target, and you may just, if it is your time, it'll

:09:40.:09:47.

reset the point where they left off. But Chen is absolutely flying away

:09:48.:09:51.

with this one. Halsted, what can he do to get back? Nothing is working

:09:52.:09:58.

against the left-hander. He is able to close out the line. He will have

:09:59.:10:05.

to change the line of the riposte. It is a great start from Chen

:10:06.:10:15.

Haiwei. And Halsted goes out on the attack, and as you put it, he had

:10:16.:10:19.

the attack but gets an off target light so no-hit scored and they will

:10:20.:10:23.

reset from where they scored the off target hit.

:10:24.:10:31.

Another one for Chen. It takes him to 7-0. Going around that line on

:10:32.:10:42.

the outside, it isn't working for Halsted. And Chen has got this one

:10:43.:10:48.

sorted out at the moment. Halsted has to change lines, Chen doing a

:10:49.:10:52.

great job and a super attack from the British fencer. That'll settle

:10:53.:10:54.

his nerves. Is that hit going to be awarded? I

:10:55.:11:27.

think Halsted is changing his weapon as we see this replay. And he has

:11:28.:11:33.

indeed asked to change his weapon. He needs to surrender the other one

:11:34.:11:43.

to the referee. Chen tightening his weapon. It looks like no-hit has

:11:44.:11:48.

been given. It is possible to make up a big

:11:49.:12:00.

difference in foil if you can work out your opponent. And Halsted needs

:12:01.:12:03.

to do that and he needs to get some points on the board. He does. We see

:12:04.:12:12.

the technician coming out. The official timekeeper adding more

:12:13.:12:23.

equipment to make this wireless system work.

:12:24.:12:31.

So, a bit of magic dust sprinkled onto the equipment and everything is

:12:32.:12:40.

working again. And it is Chen who is dominating this round of 32 against

:12:41.:12:48.

Laurence Halsted of Great Britain. That will be given as off target.

:12:49.:12:59.

And, finally, the riposte works for the Brit. Halsted is five points

:13:00.:13:04.

down but if he can get into it, that could be another one... Yes, it is.

:13:05.:13:10.

He's just found the distance now. Look out for Halsted because when he

:13:11.:13:15.

gets on a roll, he can be tricky to stop. But Chen was ready for that.

:13:16.:13:20.

He opened up the distance, very clever. You have to adapt to your

:13:21.:13:24.

tactics all the time and respond to how your opponent is working you

:13:25.:13:33.

out. Another point Halsted. He has closed it to four. 15 is the target.

:13:34.:13:44.

I think this one isn't going to go the full distance. I'd wager we

:13:45.:13:53.

should get to the break but Chen is looking very strong. The referee

:13:54.:14:03.

gives it to Chen as well. Just got the measure of the Brit at the

:14:04.:14:11.

moment. Chen is so deep in that en garde position. Yes, and very

:14:12.:14:15.

effective. As the attack is parried come he's closing not only the line

:14:16.:14:19.

but his closing out the opportunity to hit by ducking his target down

:14:20.:14:24.

and keeping his point on Halsted's target, this is how he is landing a

:14:25.:14:27.

lot of those continuations. Another one for Halsted. He has his

:14:28.:15:01.

work cut out, though. Chen isn't in top gear just yet and he is winning

:15:02.:15:07.

the tactical battle. It is my way or the highway! Laurence Halsted could

:15:08.:15:18.

be turning it around. He missed out on the attack, Chen missed on the

:15:19.:15:22.

counter and it was a continuation for Halsted. He is within three.

:15:23.:15:31.

Halsted thinks it is his. And it is! Just two points in it. Halsted

:15:32.:15:38.

clawing his way back into the match. I think Chen has called for a video

:15:39.:15:42.

replay. The referee says it was a carbon copy of the last it. The

:15:43.:15:47.

attack misses from Halsted and Chen misses on the counterattack, said

:15:48.:15:53.

the referee will stick with his decision. Chen missed behind the

:15:54.:15:54.

back of Halsted. Now that things have got tighter

:15:55.:16:15.

Chen just seems to be breaking the fight up a bit. He doesn't want to

:16:16.:16:18.

get this Halstead juggernaut rolling. A nice riposte though. The

:16:19.:16:28.

referee will question whether the riposte came while Chen was on the

:16:29.:16:32.

piste, I think it did. This was a perfectly valid hit. They were so

:16:33.:16:42.

close together Chen had to lift his arm up almost behind his head in

:16:43.:16:46.

order to allow the distance of his foil to hit on target.

:16:47.:16:56.

That is so fast from chairman there. -- Chen there. Less than a minute to

:16:57.:17:09.

go until the first break and Chen has accelerated away. A mini revival

:17:10.:17:15.

there from Halstead but Chen has just stepped on the gas. The defence

:17:16.:17:25.

here from Chen is absolutely solid, his lowering Halstead into finishing

:17:26.:17:28.

an attack on picking off Walley still trying to recover from the

:17:29.:17:32.

lunch. A nice reply there from Halstead, but he cannot afford any

:17:33.:17:38.

mistakes at all. You have to say that Chen has one foot into the

:17:39.:17:44.

round of 16 here. I think he has the whole leg. We are going up to 15. 50

:17:45.:17:53.

seconds left on this first period. Chen will want to see this out.

:17:54.:18:04.

There it is. Chen Haiwei of China defeat Laurence Halsted of Great

:18:05.:18:07.

Britain. He will move through to the next round. A great performance from

:18:08.:18:16.

the Chinese Spencer. He kind of had it pretty easy, but he won the

:18:17.:18:21.

tactical battle early on and he got out to a massive lead and Halstead

:18:22.:18:25.

fought his way into the fight but it was all too little too late.

:18:26.:18:41.

Chen Haiwei actually only did three minutes of fencing work there so

:18:42.:18:50.

that will help when it comes down to progress further on in this

:18:51.:18:54.

competition because it is a long day for all of those fences out there,

:18:55.:19:03.

the ones who stay in. It is kind of like in tennis going through five

:19:04.:19:06.

set matches before you get to the final, you don't really want that.

:19:07.:19:10.

It is quite right that the fight being finished in three minutes was

:19:11.:19:16.

absolutely superb for Chen and he will go into his next fight a lot

:19:17.:19:21.

more refreshed. That was the final hit from Chen, over the shoulder of

:19:22.:19:30.

Halstead. Yes, that is actually Halstead tried reflector chest. We

:19:31.:19:33.

finally change the line of that flick, where he had been going to

:19:34.:19:37.

shoulder on the outside of the left-hand arm before and failing, he

:19:38.:19:40.

tried to flick on to the chest and just missed.

:19:41.:19:49.

There it is, confirmation of the score all done and dusted in the

:19:50.:19:56.

first period. Chen Haiwei of China defeat Laurence Halsted of Great

:19:57.:20:03.

Britain. ORE: commiserations to Laurence Halsted that there, losing

:20:04.:20:07.

out in the men's individual foil. It is actually the only event that

:20:08.:20:12.

Great Britain have representation in but we do have James Andrew Davies

:20:13.:20:16.

who did well to progress in the competition earlier this afternoon.

:20:17.:20:20.

Here on BBC Four we were planning to show you some of the canoe slalom

:20:21.:20:24.

down at the Rio radical Park but the weather seems to have intervened. We

:20:25.:20:30.

have Matthew Pinsent standing down there and we can feel the weather

:20:31.:20:35.

here, tell us how it feels down there in Deodoro. Yes, at the

:20:36.:20:41.

Deodoro slalom canoe course here we are on the hill above the Deodoro

:20:42.:20:45.

and we are getting the brunt of this breeze, wind, perhaps even Gail at

:20:46.:20:49.

times, and you can see from the camera angles around the course, the

:20:50.:20:52.

flags fluttering and it is affecting all sorts of things off the water.

:20:53.:20:57.

If I show you behind me you can see the flags on the hill there are

:20:58.:21:00.

fluttering quite strongly and the crucial thing for the competition,

:21:01.:21:02.

if you can see down lower, you are looking for Bill read on

:21:03.:21:17.

white polls and the green and white poles and they are the gate marking

:21:18.:21:19.

polls and it makes it particularly difficult with them blowing around

:21:20.:21:21.

as they are, firstly for the competitors to get through them and

:21:22.:21:24.

secondly, crucially, for the judges to tell if they have brushed the

:21:25.:21:26.

gate or not because in canoe slalom even if you touch the gate in the

:21:27.:21:29.

slightest weight two second penalty so at the moment there is a one-hour

:21:30.:21:33.

delay and we were expecting to see them at 4:30pm UK time but that has

:21:34.:21:37.

now moved to 5:30pm at the earliest before we see any canoe slalom here

:21:38.:21:44.

in Rio. By the looks of things at the moment it looks impossible to

:21:45.:21:48.

negotiate those gates right there and Great Britain have two

:21:49.:21:51.

individual canoe slalom lists going this afternoon and they were

:21:52.:21:57.

scheduled to be Joe Clarke and David Florence, both have very different

:21:58.:22:00.

parts of their Olympic career. Will they had to contend with this? Yes,

:22:01.:22:07.

the early stages of the canoe slalom you have two chances to go down the

:22:08.:22:12.

course and basically the top 15 or 16 paddlers, depending on whether

:22:13.:22:18.

you are K-1 or C one get through to the semifinals. We comfortably

:22:19.:22:21.

expect that the both Joe and David they would do that, so whilst it is

:22:22.:22:26.

a pain for everyone they have to be patient and see if they will go

:22:27.:22:33.

today. We have seen a full day delay -- a full day delay in the rowing

:22:34.:22:36.

sofa the athletes here it is a rating game -- waiting game and they

:22:37.:22:41.

have to stay patient because we expect them to do great things in

:22:42.:22:44.

this competition and we hope this will be a temporary blip in the

:22:45.:22:48.

road. Take us to your competition days, if you will. Likes of David

:22:49.:22:53.

and Joe are going to have to stand by and wait and compose themselves.

:22:54.:22:57.

When you were out there doing the rowing, how did you compose

:22:58.:23:01.

yourself? Did you take yourself away or keep yourself in the zone? How

:23:02.:23:04.

did you manage to focus and deliver the best performance? It is a very

:23:05.:23:09.

good question and it really depends how long the delay is. The real

:23:10.:23:12.

difficulty is when they say there is a one-hour delay and then they push

:23:13.:23:17.

it 30 minutes or another two hours and what you really want is

:23:18.:23:20.

something clinical to happen, as has happened at the rowing this morning

:23:21.:23:24.

when they say they will draw a line under the day and come back tomorrow

:23:25.:23:28.

but what is really difficulties if you are about to compete and they

:23:29.:23:31.

tell you to wait for 60 minutes and you have to think about mindset and

:23:32.:23:35.

also about hydration and nutrition, what have you eaten and how much

:23:36.:23:39.

will you drink and how will you stay at the peak of your powers to stay

:23:40.:23:44.

taking on your Olympic tom petition and everybody is nervous when you

:23:45.:23:47.

get to an Olympics and you are very keen to get on with it but if it is

:23:48.:23:51.

like this and windy and inconsistent it is a nightmare for the

:23:52.:23:56.

competitors. It is a level playing field, they will all have to contend

:23:57.:24:01.

with it and the medals made the -- the medals may be decided on who can

:24:02.:24:05.

deal with the competition -- complication best. We'll come back

:24:06.:24:09.

to you later on so stay good and stay dry and try not to get blown

:24:10.:24:12.

away and we will catch up with you later. In the meantime we will take

:24:13.:24:21.

you to the judo match -- judo mat and the competition taking place in

:24:22.:24:24.

Carioca number two, that is the middle one here in the Olympic Park

:24:25.:24:29.

and after the disappointment of Ashley McKenzie going out yesterday

:24:30.:24:35.

in the last 32 in the men's 60 kilo category, that was a real

:24:36.:24:38.

disappointment for him. He lost against the reigning champion and it

:24:39.:24:42.

was an emotional defeat for him. Tears were shed and he really didn't

:24:43.:24:45.

want to speak to any of the media after his defeat yesterday but he

:24:46.:24:49.

eventually composed himself and chatted to us on the BBC but after

:24:50.:24:53.

that disappointment there in the 60 kilo category, it now is the term of

:24:54.:25:00.

Colin Oates in the 66 kilograms category. He is also a Commonwealth

:25:01.:25:05.

champion and scored a career-best European silver earlier in the year

:25:06.:25:12.

so it is now time for Colin Oates to take to the match at -- mat and he

:25:13.:25:19.

is up against a Frenchman and we can join this one with our commentator

:25:20.:25:21.

Ollie Williams. Colin Oates in the blue making his

:25:22.:25:48.

first appearance here at the Olympic Games. He is up against Le Blouch

:25:49.:25:56.

for France. It took five minutes in golden score for adults to prevail

:25:57.:26:03.

the last time they met. Just like last November there is a tentative

:26:04.:26:12.

early exchange and already a penalty against Le Blouch. That will be a

:26:13.:26:18.

little early benefit for Colin Oates. When you come out here at

:26:19.:26:24.

first there is a fantastic atmosphere and he is just wrapping

:26:25.:26:31.

around. He says this is probably his last chance in the Olympics. He was

:26:32.:26:39.

in the quarterfinals in London 2012. These are relatively evenly matched

:26:40.:26:40.

opponents in this opening round. Le Blouch trying to ten Oates there.

:26:41.:26:57.

It is good to get the grip in these opening exchanges and fill each

:26:58.:26:59.

other out and try to get the grip and the momentum and the hold that

:27:00.:27:03.

will enable you to turn your opponent and get them on their back.

:27:04.:27:07.

Yet the ippon that will enter this competition. Oates trying to bring

:27:08.:27:21.

the lake in between the legs of Le Blouch. He is looking to pin him

:27:22.:27:26.

down and get him in a hold on the floor. If you can get your opponent

:27:27.:27:30.

on the back and hold them, that is what will get the win. Le Blouch are

:27:31.:27:35.

struggling a bit and Oates is trying to get the purchasing needs and get

:27:36.:27:47.

the lock. This will last five minutes and then goes to golden

:27:48.:27:51.

score if the score is level at that point but the penalty will count

:27:52.:27:56.

against Le Blouch so if the score stays as it is now Oates go through.

:27:57.:28:02.

This is technically the second round of this competition at Rio 2016.

:28:03.:28:09.

Oates didn't fight in the first round, only four fighters did.

:28:10.:28:15.

Nobody has really established to much of a sway in this competition

:28:16.:28:24.

yet. It is looking for the explosive manoeuvres which is what you need to

:28:25.:28:27.

do but he isn't getting the purchasing needs. It is exactly the

:28:28.:28:30.

same as November last year when these two last fought and Oates have

:28:31.:28:36.

the attacking advantage but couldn't convert it into the move he needed

:28:37.:28:41.

to win it. It was ten or 12 minutes in the end, it was an extremely long

:28:42.:28:46.

and drawn-out contest. We could see that again today.

:28:47.:28:54.

He dodges that. We are more than halfway through normal time.

:28:55.:29:22.

Le Blouch is just a little bit shorter than Oates which is a factor

:29:23.:29:28.

in terms of height and reach and how close you want your opponent to be.

:29:29.:29:40.

Now, a penalty there against each of our two athletes for passive itty,

:29:41.:29:45.

noncombative T. When you see that motion by the referee, it is to

:29:46.:29:49.

suggest that essentially both of them should be a little bit more

:29:50.:29:54.

aggressive, they are standing off too much. Certainly you will see Le

:29:55.:29:58.

Blouch try and pick this up now because time is going to run out for

:29:59.:30:03.

him. He is down by two penalties to one and Oates will be very happy

:30:04.:30:07.

with this. Le Blouch will increasingly, you'll see, come at

:30:08.:30:09.

Oates now. Less than a minute remaining. Oates

:30:10.:30:29.

matching Le Blouch. That was a sacrifice technique, dropping to the

:30:30.:30:34.

floor first in an attempt to get Le Blouch on the floor but he couldn't

:30:35.:30:46.

get the purchase. Trying to get over the top now. He can probably use

:30:47.:30:52.

this to his advantage. I don't know if that is going to go up. Le Blouch

:30:53.:31:02.

appealing to the referee. Riding around on the floor. The clock is

:31:03.:31:12.

ticking down. 20 seconds. Once again, going for the throw and

:31:13.:31:13.

nothing came of it. Now, that has levelled the scores.

:31:14.:31:30.

The penalty for non-combat itty against Oates, and we have eight

:31:31.:31:36.

seconds for someone to do something, otherwise we go to Golden score.

:31:37.:31:42.

Unlikely to see anything here. You can see the look and Oates's face as

:31:43.:31:51.

the gong goes. We will go to golden score, as we did the last time that

:31:52.:31:58.

these two met each other. Colin Oates hasn't lost Kilian Le Blouch

:31:59.:32:06.

in his career. But, then, they've only met each other twice in the

:32:07.:32:12.

last six or seven years. It isn't that often on the international

:32:13.:32:20.

circuit. Golden score means any penalty, any school, anything,

:32:21.:32:26.

waza-ari, ippon will win. Oates turned it into his advantage.

:32:27.:32:50.

He couldn't do anything you with it. There's no time limit with golden

:32:51.:32:56.

score so this will go until somebody registers something. Again, same

:32:57.:33:02.

manoeuvre, trying to make it work. Oates seems to be wise for it. The

:33:03.:33:09.

leg inside the thigh trying to give him purchase, the idea meaning you

:33:10.:33:13.

can bring your opponent over the top. These two are cancelling each

:33:14.:33:19.

other out almost entirely. However, the penalty has been awarded against

:33:20.:33:26.

Colin Oates who, you can see, is livid with that but there's nothing

:33:27.:33:32.

he can do. It is down to the official to award penalties. By

:33:33.:33:36.

virtue of that, Kilian Le Blouch goes through. It was the exact

:33:37.:33:40.

opposite the last time they met after an incredibly attritional

:33:41.:33:45.

fight, a Oates was given the penalty and went through. Here, by virtue of

:33:46.:33:50.

penalties with no one really registering any score, Kilian Le

:33:51.:33:56.

Blouch goes through. And Colin Oates is out of Rio 2016.

:33:57.:34:08.

disappointment. As you can see and Colin's face, especially on golden

:34:09.:34:18.

score, real disappointment for verse Scott. A few people have been making

:34:19.:34:23.

their way out of Carioca Arena two, so maybe they were there, seeing the

:34:24.:34:28.

disappointment for the Scot. Kilian Le Blouch continues to fly the flag

:34:29.:34:33.

for France so he continues in the competition. It is quite breezy down

:34:34.:34:37.

here and, as we told you here earlier, the weather has played its

:34:38.:34:43.

part at postponing events with the roaming. We saw some boats capsized

:34:44.:34:47.

in yesterday's because of the weather. So for the safety of

:34:48.:34:51.

everyone, we aren't seeing any rowing right now. It's also

:34:52.:34:56.

affecting things up at Diadora. We wanted to show you the canoe slalom,

:34:57.:35:02.

but, as Matthew Pinsent told us earlier, play isn't going to get

:35:03.:35:06.

under way for at least another hour. We will keep you posted. However, we

:35:07.:35:11.

have action going on right around the ground so let's see what they

:35:12.:35:19.

are doing on BBC One. Rugby 7's, Great Britain against Canada. They

:35:20.:35:26.

opened against Brazil, they beat them. They played Japan last night,

:35:27.:35:31.

they beat them as well. A chance to beat Canada and qualify top out of

:35:32.:35:35.

group C. After that on BBC One, we're going to see the women's road

:35:36.:35:39.

race getting under way. Lizzie Armitstead of Great Britain is in

:35:40.:35:47.

here. They are under way right now. They will join at after Rugby 7's

:35:48.:35:51.

but if you want to watch that right now, you can see it over on the BBC

:35:52.:35:54.

Red Button, uninterrupted coverage right there. For us, though, we will

:35:55.:36:02.

concentrate on the beach volleyball. Yesterday, we showed you the

:36:03.:36:07.

stunning Copacabana stadium there. A custom-built arena. We saw the

:36:08.:36:12.

Brazilian pair open their campaign with a 2-0 win. Though the world

:36:13.:36:16.

number one pet and they are doing exactly the same in the women's

:36:17.:36:21.

event. The home nation are the number one seeds. What is she doing?

:36:22.:36:27.

You were not welcome! Let's see what the Brazilian women's pair did to

:36:28.:36:35.

open up their campaign. They got through the opening match unscathed

:36:36.:36:42.

against the Russian pair. They won that 2-0, just like their male

:36:43.:36:47.

team-mates did yesterday. The Brazilian number one pet enjoying

:36:48.:36:50.

the moment, enjoying the sunshine, as you'd expect they would do. They

:36:51.:36:57.

are really enjoying that. So, Brazil move on with a convincing win. We

:36:58.:37:01.

will join them down at Copacabana right now and see the USA take on

:37:02.:37:14.

the Polish pair. Our first set is going to be taken through by Clayton

:37:15.:37:20.

Lucas, our commentator. Let's join them in the first set. It is the

:37:21.:37:28.

first 21 points and set. Doesn't matter who serves, you have to win

:37:29.:37:31.

each set by two points. It is the USA in blues serving

:37:32.:37:59.

Poland in red receiving. First set. The first point goes the way of the

:38:00.:38:06.

USA, USA getting in a right because both players ended up try to stop

:38:07.:38:08.

the ball. Nice pick-up, that is another one

:38:09.:38:27.

false kindly for Poland and they would get the point as also a very

:38:28.:38:30.

good start for them. A touch of nerves for the USA, you feel.

:38:31.:38:52.

The net touch against Poland. If you touch the net, that is a fault.

:38:53.:39:39.

The lead has been handed straight back to the USA.

:39:40.:39:55.

There's an opportunity to a dig by Sweat, shouldn't make any adjustment

:39:56.:40:01.

of the crosscourt position. The teams change ends in multiples

:40:02.:40:27.

of seven in the opening two sets. That is because we look at the

:40:28.:40:31.

weather and we see it blowing up 35 miles an hour. It is warm but the

:40:32.:40:36.

wind is a factor. That affects the way you play the ball. If it is

:40:37.:40:41.

blowing into your face, you have to set the ball to the net. So the

:40:42.:40:48.

teams will change ends. They both get to experience potentially the

:40:49.:40:54.

good end and the bad end. And when the sun is out, that also affects

:40:55.:41:02.

the way the game is played. It is a bright, sunny day, depth perception

:41:03.:41:08.

goes right into your face it can be an issue. Scramble by Sweat.

:41:09.:41:17.

Excellent! The crowd enjoying that one but that was a shame because

:41:18.:41:22.

both teams working very hard and Brzostek just fluffed her lines.

:41:23.:41:31.

She couldn't get as far out of the sand as she would have liked to go

:41:32.:41:35.

over the net. It isn't going to come back. USA

:41:36.:41:49.

lead by two. There was a net touch as well by

:41:50.:42:04.

Poland. Great joust at the net. Superbly won

:42:05.:42:29.

by Kolosinska. The only time in the game the ball can be stopped,

:42:30.:42:35.

carried, as it were, as it is jousted. It is a good test of

:42:36.:42:45.

strength. She who pushes last wins. The chase is on! Brilliantly done by

:42:46.:42:52.

Sweat and Fendrick pops it back over. Better chance for the USA now,

:42:53.:43:00.

and they have taken it! Excellent work from Sweat and Fendrick. They

:43:01.:43:06.

were under pressure off the serve, and it was a very good chase. They

:43:07.:43:12.

gave it back and said, right, let's reset our defence. They made a dig

:43:13.:43:15.

and then got the ball to the line. It doesn't quite catch the sideline.

:43:16.:43:38.

The lines official says it is out. Sweat thinks about challenging but

:43:39.:43:42.

she changes her mind. Two challenges per set.

:43:43.:44:17.

Excellent from Fendrick, making good use of her height at the net. The

:44:18.:45:05.

USA are in front at the moment. Just comes in front, then turns it back

:45:06.:45:09.

to the line. No one there to stop that one.

:45:10.:45:22.

That's not going to come back. You can see just how much the ball is

:45:23.:45:28.

moving in the wind and how much the players have to move to try and

:45:29.:45:35.

control unit. Kolosinska unable to do that. She came up, she is very

:45:36.:45:41.

narrow and unable to contain the ball, that means the USA have the

:45:42.:45:48.

point. Two aces for them now. Some serious strapping on a Lauren

:45:49.:45:57.

Fendrick's thumbs. She was unable to make the third touch. The third time

:45:58.:46:01.

of asking Poland already had the ball.

:46:02.:46:09.

A nice touch and another decent touch. It is still Poland to have

:46:10.:46:13.

control of the ball. It is a net touch against Poland,

:46:14.:46:59.

continuing through and into the net. We have a technical time-out with

:47:00.:47:00.

the USA leading 12-9. These two teams have played each

:47:01.:48:26.

other previously on the world tour and on both occasions it is Poland

:48:27.:48:32.

who came out on top by 2-0. However the last time I played was back in

:48:33.:48:39.

2015 and it was Poland, in the grand slam. There haven't been any matches

:48:40.:48:54.

paid since then. Now it is the USA in the ascendancy.

:48:55.:49:03.

Good dig. Poland have to go again. It might be a blessing for Poland

:49:04.:49:13.

here. It might not be, and it isn't. Well watched by Brooke Sweat,

:49:14.:49:23.

playing that one over, just when Fendrick made the continuation block

:49:24.:49:27.

it was out of position and it kind of put them back into it and gave

:49:28.:49:32.

them an opportunity to have a swing but going with the pokey and they

:49:33.:49:38.

played the price for it. -- paid the price for it.

:49:39.:50:44.

Oh, she's going to get the ace as well. She took her time, da Vinci,

:50:45.:50:52.

with a pre-server team, but it paid off. Such a cruel grow -- blow when

:50:53.:50:58.

you are on the receiving side of a server like this. It could have just

:50:59.:51:02.

as easily have landed on the USA side. A big block as well to back-up

:51:03.:51:12.

the ace serve and the USA are very much in the driving seat. Poland's

:51:13.:51:18.

time-out not helping them. USA fans are delighted.

:51:19.:51:51.

The official is signalling that they touched. If it does touch the

:51:52.:52:01.

defender doesn't matter whether ball goes after that, if it doesn't come

:52:02.:52:05.

back over it is the attacking teams point. A bit too much on that one.

:52:06.:52:11.

That is the scenario you have when the wind is at your back like that,

:52:12.:52:16.

it favours the team with the wind into their faces on serve because

:52:17.:52:19.

you can go up and really had the ball hard and the wind will hold it

:52:20.:52:24.

up and move it around a bit but when the wind is at your back you have to

:52:25.:52:28.

take some heat off the ball. Otherwise it will go long.

:52:29.:52:58.

Sweat is getting onto just about everything, isn't she, at the

:52:59.:53:04.

moment. Making Poland were very hard for their point.

:53:05.:53:12.

Angle was the corn -- Orlandi outcome.

:53:13.:53:45.

The sun is beginning to make an appearance over Centre court. A bit

:53:46.:53:57.

intermittent with the clouds that are rolling around in the breeze.

:53:58.:54:01.

That is a good chase but it won't come back. Despite Poland 's best

:54:02.:54:07.

efforts at the moment it is the USA who are bossing this first set.

:54:08.:54:26.

Straight through the arms of Fendrick, must have caught as a goes

:54:27.:54:32.

through. It does against, she has to play it back over again. A net touch

:54:33.:54:36.

in the end against Fendrick and Poland to take the point. With the

:54:37.:54:41.

block accounting is a touch on the beach it does mean that the

:54:42.:54:44.

attacking side in these situations do still have the edge because as a

:54:45.:54:49.

defending team you are kind of scrambling to get the ball back into

:54:50.:54:53.

being a position to have an attack but fortunately for Fendrick she

:54:54.:54:57.

denied Poland the opportunity because she touched it.

:54:58.:55:04.

It was hit hard enough so that went in to Kolosinska's block.

:55:05.:55:30.

A good pick-up. Brilliant and hard hit as well from Fendrick and the

:55:31.:55:37.

USA take the opening set to 21-14. So, the tale of the first set. The

:55:38.:56:48.

USA had three blocks and made three more digs and three more aces to

:56:49.:56:55.

seal that one 21-14 as we get the second set underway. The USA are

:56:56.:57:00.

having to scramble. A free ball back here for Poland and the chance to

:57:01.:57:01.

get the first point on the board. Really good defence. Poland have got

:57:02.:57:30.

off to a flyer in this second set. It is a must win set for them. USA

:57:31.:57:36.

will be delighted with the way they have got this match off and running

:57:37.:57:40.

by taking that first set but now they need to consolidate that under

:57:41.:57:43.

the second. They would hate to get drawn into a third set decider. Nine

:57:44.:57:55.

over was the call and that is exactly the play that Kendrick came

:57:56.:57:56.

up with. -- line over. Kolosinska again the target for the

:57:57.:58:24.

USA and this time the joust was won by Fendrick but would you believe

:58:25.:58:28.

it, Brzostek just plays it straight back over and the USA stand and

:58:29.:58:33.

stare and let it stand. A wasted opportunity. A wasted opportunity by

:58:34.:58:46.

Fendrick and Brooke Sweat. A great super slow Mo of the joust. Good

:58:47.:58:57.

covering. Oh, clever, but it's not going to

:58:58.:59:16.

catch the baseline. Poland try to do a literary classic going over on one

:59:17.:59:20.

from the German beach volleyball player who was there at the Olympic

:59:21.:59:27.

Games but it doesn't quite pay off. It was the right idea, the USA both

:59:28.:59:34.

in at the net. It is the USA who take the point, just one behind now.

:59:35.:59:43.

Sweat is scurrying around the court superbly well. Difficult for Poland

:59:44.:59:48.

to find clean winners. Poland re-establishing their lead in

:59:49.:00:23.

the first and change. The wind is getting up.

:00:24.:00:32.

They are somewhat protected on this court. Poland to deny the USA and

:00:33.:00:40.

they are extending their lead. Fendrick was a little too close to

:00:41.:00:52.

the net and she couldn't get it. Oh, it's another one. Kolosinska

:00:53.:01:10.

again hopping up into the hitting zone to deny the USA, and the USA

:01:11.:01:16.

with no option now at 7-2 down, they call the time-out.

:01:17.:02:34.

Well, words fail me right now. Three blocks in a row for Poland. USA,

:02:35.:02:43.

having called that time-out, straight back in and denied again.

:02:44.:02:50.

This could be more trouble for the USA. She can't get it over the net!

:02:51.:03:04.

Well, where do the USA go from here? Seven points behind, they've used

:03:05.:03:07.

their time-out although there could be a technical time-out.

:03:08.:03:26.

More trouble for the USA. Four touches given against them. This is

:03:27.:03:40.

a bit of a collapse. They still need that one side out. The crosscourt

:03:41.:03:43.

angle wasn't executed properly. This is now a mental battle more

:03:44.:04:08.

than anything else for the USA. Backing themselves to get the side

:04:09.:04:14.

out. And they have. Relief for Fendrick. And for Sweat. 11-3 down.

:04:15.:04:28.

You fancy Poland to take this set. Stranger things have happened,

:04:29.:04:29.

though. Even better pick-up by Poland.

:04:30.:04:52.

Doesn't come back over. It is a point to the USA.

:04:53.:05:21.

Another chance for the States. The USA are just strangling. There are

:05:22.:05:34.

lots of opportunities for Poland to the ball down.

:05:35.:06:03.

Well, for the USA right now, 12-5 down, but with the cushion of one

:06:04.:06:11.

set in the bag, they probably know deep down this is going to go to a

:06:12.:06:15.

decider, but there is still time for them to get momentum and points on

:06:16.:06:19.

the board, to make things interesting and give Poland

:06:20.:06:23.

something to think about but they need to make those digs count.

:06:24.:06:40.

Brzostek to serve. Fendrick is the target.

:06:41.:07:20.

The scramble was unsuccessful. It is a fine line at times. You watch the

:07:21.:07:29.

players coming up with the hand open in the way they have it, a bit like

:07:30.:07:34.

a spaghetti separator. Sometimes, it just comes off the fingers, not the

:07:35.:07:39.

tops off the knuckles. If it comes off the pads, it can be called as

:07:40.:07:41.

illegal play. So, technical time-out, perhaps

:07:42.:07:53.

things not as bad as they could have been but it is Poland in the

:07:54.:07:55.

ascendancy, 14-7 up. Despite the breeze, it's very, very

:07:56.:09:01.

warm out there on the court. As you might expect in Copacabana beach.

:09:02.:09:07.

That was a magnificent shot from Kolosinska. Falling backwards and

:09:08.:09:15.

getting the ball to the opposite sideline. She's smiling.

:09:16.:09:27.

The USA kept it in play. Sweat couldn't get it back over, and

:09:28.:09:43.

Poland are getting further and further away from the USA.

:09:44.:09:57.

Almost served into the middle of court from Fendrick. You can see she

:09:58.:10:24.

hits this, there isn't any spin on it whatsoever.

:10:25.:10:42.

It must have caught Fendrick, which is why she was turning to hit the

:10:43.:10:48.

ball instead of popping it up. Good arm swing, good extension, and

:10:49.:11:16.

a decent rap on the ball, she stunned that one.

:11:17.:11:22.

Oh, top serve. That one dropped right down in front of Poland. That

:11:23.:11:30.

is in part because the wind is in the faces of the USA. They have the

:11:31.:11:38.

good end, as it were. Poland have to be lively on their feet to get the

:11:39.:11:44.

ball up off the sand. And then they've got the skills to get the

:11:45.:11:49.

side out, and now they moved to the good end. Three points required by

:11:50.:11:58.

them to get this set wrapped up and move the game to a decider.

:11:59.:12:28.

It was the right idea, breaking from the net but she couldn't find the

:12:29.:12:32.

control to get it back to Brzostek. This is exactly what the USA needed,

:12:33.:12:55.

that run-off points, that little bit of momentum they can use to try to

:12:56.:13:00.

take this forward into the deciding set, dare I say it we are going to

:13:01.:13:06.

go into the deciding set. With the way Poland have been playing, it's

:13:07.:13:09.

difficult not to see them find three points. Let's see if the USA can

:13:10.:13:13.

make it any more interesting. Everybody tries to replicate the

:13:14.:13:52.

Brazilians, in terms of breaking from the net and playing high hands

:13:53.:13:58.

defence, but only those two from Brazil are the best in the world at

:13:59.:14:00.

it. That was a belter from Kolosinska,

:14:01.:14:18.

bringing up set .4 Poland. It's a question of when they take second

:14:19.:14:19.

set. It's going to be a free ball.

:14:20.:14:39.

Kolosinska, for the set... And she has done it off the block and out of

:14:40.:14:43.

play. Poland take the second set 21-13. It is 1-1, going into a

:14:44.:14:47.

decider. So the second set statistics really

:14:48.:16:00.

tell us all we need to know in terms of that it is 1-1 and we are into a

:16:01.:16:06.

decider. Poland with the server and the USA receiving the race to 15 to

:16:07.:16:11.

see who will post an opening game win in pool A. No technical time-out

:16:12.:16:21.

in these deciding sets and the teams change ends on multiples of five

:16:22.:16:27.

points on the way to 15. It is the USA that gets the opening point.

:16:28.:16:40.

Kendrick with the serve. With the wind at her back she needs to be

:16:41.:16:53.

careful not put much on it. Sweat gets involved. Everybody is working

:16:54.:16:59.

hard and still the ball went hit the sand, but it does now, and it's the

:17:00.:17:04.

USA that take the point I would you believe it, after that second set

:17:05.:17:08.

thumping, they have, flying in the third set here, leading 2-0. A real

:17:09.:17:14.

statement of intent for them. Well read by Brooke Sweat. Well finished.

:17:15.:17:26.

Spectacular views from the top of the Beach Volleyball Arena, looking

:17:27.:17:31.

out into the Atlantic Ocean. Spectacular views here on Centre

:17:32.:17:33.

Court as we witnessed this thrilling match between the USA and Poland.

:17:34.:17:43.

Good arc, chase is on. Oh, that was so unlucky. Fendrick's legs going

:17:44.:17:52.

ten to the dozen but they couldn't seem to get close enough to the ball

:17:53.:17:58.

to get a decent contact on it. It is like a cartoon, legs going but not

:17:59.:18:03.

getting any forward omentum. Unfortunately she couldn't get it

:18:04.:18:09.

back over the net. The first point for Poland. A gift straight back for

:18:10.:18:14.

the USA. That one will land in. The first

:18:15.:18:41.

end. USA have made the running, they have the lead, and they go to the

:18:42.:18:48.

good end, so that's a pretty good series of points for them to take

:18:49.:18:53.

three from, what is perceived to be the bad end, with the wind at their

:18:54.:18:54.

backs. A good leave. That was gunning for

:18:55.:19:07.

the baseline. A split-second decision by Lauren Fendrick to let

:19:08.:19:09.

it go. Tidy side at that time by Poland. --

:19:10.:19:32.

side out. Just see how much that wind is

:19:33.:19:53.

picking up now. How much more control is required of the beach

:19:54.:19:59.

volleyball. Top blocking from Kolosinska, Poland ). -- Poland

:20:00.:20:05.

right back in it. Well picked off and well put down.

:20:06.:20:40.

Poland are back in the groove and they are back in front and the

:20:41.:20:47.

Polish fans are ecstatic. An excellent read from Brzostek and a

:20:48.:20:53.

great finish as one onto that baseline.

:20:54.:21:09.

It is getting better and better and both teams have scored more points

:21:10.:21:13.

at the bad end and they have other good time.

:21:14.:21:25.

Nicely played again. Poland are on a roll. USA are under pressure.

:21:26.:22:56.

There are shouts of USA, USA. They certainly need some points. The ball

:22:57.:23:07.

was not hit high enough to allow the high hands defence. The ball hits

:23:08.:23:12.

the sideline and Poland take another point. They are getting closer to

:23:13.:23:19.

victory. Had a look, could see the line was open, and took it.

:23:20.:23:26.

Kolosinska once again goes through to block. This is a free ball for

:23:27.:23:31.

Poland. It could be 9-4. It is 9-4. One block was called mid-rally, I'm

:23:32.:23:53.

not sure that Brooke Sweat saw it because she started to run to the

:23:54.:23:56.

line instead of holding her line crosscourt.

:23:57.:24:09.

Crosscourt was there to be hit and there to be hit hard, but for some

:24:10.:24:17.

reason Lauren Fendrick tried to roll into the line where the block was

:24:18.:24:22.

and whether defence was running too. Sometimes you just really have to

:24:23.:24:25.

back yourself and almost tell yourself to get up and hit it and

:24:26.:24:29.

get up and move and get up and do what you need to do. It is not quite

:24:30.:24:34.

happening for the USA, is a? Would you believe it? It is a cruel low

:24:35.:24:42.

for Fendrick and Sweat as Kolosinska comes up with an ace serve courtesy

:24:43.:24:49.

of the net. They are 11-4 up and they are four points away from

:24:50.:24:53.

victory in the USA looked to be all but out of it. Another look at that

:24:54.:25:04.

ace serve from Poland. It is another ace serve for Poland. That time

:25:05.:25:09.

right towards the baseline. Fendrick thought it was going out.

:25:10.:25:22.

Fendrick will be thinking, why didn't I do that three points ago?

:25:23.:25:28.

She is the tallest player on the sand and when she gets up and hits

:25:29.:25:34.

like that she has been unstoppable. It is easy to say that when you are

:25:35.:25:44.

sat watching. It will stay and play, Poland have to go again. A lovely

:25:45.:25:53.

angle. Brzostek made sure it hit the sand. Poland are two away from

:25:54.:25:55.

victory. Chance for Poland ringing out around

:25:56.:26:15.

the beach volleyball and charts for the USA have gone quiet. -- chance.

:26:16.:26:25.

They might start to be heard again as that one goes down for Fendrick.

:26:26.:26:35.

That was a really good pick-up, wasn't it? It had to come back. Only

:26:36.:26:42.

one place a good comeback, angle and Sweat was waiting for it. Fendrick

:26:43.:26:52.

made sure it went down. A real test of character now fully USA. It is

:26:53.:27:01.

Kolosinska who puts the ball on the sand and it is now match point for

:27:02.:27:04.

Poland. They have a hat full of them.

:27:05.:27:16.

Kolosinska with the serve. Fendrick again the target. Fendrick to keep

:27:17.:27:24.

the USA in it, she has done that. Now it really is backs to the wall

:27:25.:27:31.

time for the USA. They cannot allow Poland to slide out. -- side out.

:27:32.:27:44.

Kolosinska for the match. She is going to get another chance. Does

:27:45.:27:49.

she know? Brzostek puts it over, well picked up by Sweat. Would you

:27:50.:27:55.

believe it? It wouldn't go over. All of the hard work is to no avail and

:27:56.:28:00.

it is Poland who take the cert 15-7, and the match by 2-1.

:28:01.:28:09.

ORE: so, Poland do it, winning the beach volleyball against USA in pool

:28:10.:28:15.

a buy two sets to one. They need the decider but the Polish pair came out

:28:16.:28:19.

champions and took a well-deserved round of applause down there on

:28:20.:28:27.

Copacabana. The sunshine seems to have left us at the Olympic Park. It

:28:28.:28:32.

looks great down there on Copacabana right now so we will bring you

:28:33.:28:35.

up-to-date with some of the action we have seen at the park so we will

:28:36.:28:41.

go to the fencing. We will bring you and these guys, these wonderful

:28:42.:28:45.

volunteers, let's bring you up-to-date with the headlines, shall

:28:46.:28:50.

we? Richard Kruse one against the

:28:51.:28:59.

Algerian and he goes in the last 16 now against Andrea Cassara of Italy.

:29:00.:29:05.

Richard Kruse is the last British hope in the men's foil because we

:29:06.:29:09.

saw James Andrew Davies moved into the last 16 but he was 8-2 up

:29:10.:29:14.

against Tim assassin from Russia but he lost in that match. Laurence

:29:15.:29:22.

Halsted is also out. -- Timor satin. The reigning Olympic women's tennis

:29:23.:29:28.

champion, Serena Williams, is out on Centre Park here at the Olympic Park

:29:29.:29:33.

and she has 22 grand slams to her name and she is playing Daria

:29:34.:29:41.

Gavrilova over who was standing in a way of her immediate title defence.

:29:42.:30:01.

He's been waiting some time, Adam Peaty to take to the Olympic Games

:30:02.:30:22.

and he goes in the 100 metre breaststroke final after setting a

:30:23.:30:25.

world record in the heats last night. If you want to watch that,

:30:26.:30:33.

2:50am your time. He's ready, and you can watch it live on the BBC.

:30:34.:30:38.

It'll be on the Red Button on the BBC sport website, on the apt and

:30:39.:30:42.

most likely you'll be able to see it on BBC One as well. It could be

:30:43.:30:46.

Great Britain's first gold medal of the games. He is in fantastic form.

:30:47.:30:52.

If it doesn't come of their, it could happen in the road race. So

:30:53.:30:57.

much expected in Lizzie Armitstead. She is the current reigning world

:30:58.:31:01.

champion and she is in contention right now along the road race

:31:02.:31:05.

course. Watch it right now on BBC One. There will be uninterrupted

:31:06.:31:11.

coverage of it on the Red Button. Next up on BBC One, another world

:31:12.:31:16.

champion, James Guy, in the 200-metre freestyle heats. He had a

:31:17.:31:20.

go in the 400-metre freestyle final last night and he couldn't hold out

:31:21.:31:27.

although he led for much of the race. James Guy coming up next on

:31:28.:31:32.

BBC One. We're going to continue with the watery theme. Canoe slalom

:31:33.:31:42.

is finally ready to go. Matthew Pinsent is standing by for us.

:31:43.:31:47.

Finally all those fans waiting to watch the action can enjoy the canoe

:31:48.:31:53.

slalom. Absolutely. One hour ago, the wind was gusting around here,

:31:54.:31:58.

that has died away, and we have still got the sunshine but most

:31:59.:32:04.

importantly the wind has died down sufficiently for the competition to

:32:05.:32:08.

start. David Florence will go in the C1 and everyone is relieved the

:32:09.:32:12.

canoe slalom can get under way from here in Rio. Just tell us how the

:32:13.:32:19.

competition is going to go because we see a couple of runs for the

:32:20.:32:24.

individuals, don't we? That's right. All the individual paddlers have a

:32:25.:32:30.

preliminary heat. They get two chances to make it through to the

:32:31.:32:34.

semifinal. So, for David Florence, he's got to post a time in the top

:32:35.:32:39.

16, so I think the tactic will be he tries to get down the course, use

:32:40.:32:43.

the opportunity to go as quick as he can, then there will be a period of

:32:44.:32:48.

20 minutes after his run whether he assesses if he can improve, he will

:32:49.:32:56.

have a look, have a discussion with his coach, see where he is placed,

:32:57.:33:01.

and then he could say I've done enough, I'm safely through to the

:33:02.:33:05.

semifinal and leave it at that. The same for Joe Clarke in the K-1 who

:33:06.:33:12.

goes soon after. It is a calming moment for their nerves. Get the

:33:13.:33:18.

first run under the belt. Matthew Pinsent, thank you for keeping us

:33:19.:33:22.

up-to-date. We will be back with Matthew later on in the programme

:33:23.:33:26.

but, as he mentioned, the canoe slalom is one for the adrenaline

:33:27.:33:28.

junkies. If you don't know your sport, here

:33:29.:33:40.

is the guide. The Olympic sport of canoe slalom consists of a course of

:33:41.:33:45.

up to 300 metres of whitewater rapids with elite athletes able to

:33:46.:33:48.

complete the course under two minutes. There are four events,

:33:49.:33:52.

prefer men and one for women, and they all take place on the same

:33:53.:33:56.

stretch of water. The differences between kayaking and canoeing are

:33:57.:33:59.

the sitting positions of the athletes and the number of blades on

:34:00.:34:03.

the paddle. In kayak, a paddler is seated with their legs in front

:34:04.:34:12.

using a double bladed paddle. Canoeists kneel in the boat and have

:34:13.:34:15.

a single bladed paddle. In the competition, athletes race course

:34:16.:34:17.

which is a series of gates, either red or green, and must be negotiated

:34:18.:34:24.

in number order. The polls determine the direction the paddlers must pass

:34:25.:34:29.

through the gates. The head of the competitor must cross the line of

:34:30.:34:33.

the polls in the correct direction otherwise they will be depenalised.

:34:34.:34:38.

Touching the poll receives a penalty. Missing a gate altogether,

:34:39.:34:44.

pushing the gate or going through it in the wrong direction in care is a

:34:45.:34:51.

52nd penalty. In heats, the athletes from the course twice, the better

:34:52.:34:55.

rough the runs is counted and determines who qualifies for the

:34:56.:34:59.

semifinals. In the semifinals and finals, competitors only have one

:35:00.:35:04.

athlete. The quickest time wins after any penalties have been added.

:35:05.:35:10.

The canoe slalom has been a happy hunting ground of late. Tim Baillie

:35:11.:35:14.

and Etienne Stott came away with Great Britain's first ever gold

:35:15.:35:19.

medal in the event. It was part of a British 1-2 because they came ahead

:35:20.:35:24.

of David Florence and Richard Hounslow, who took the silver. That

:35:25.:35:28.

unfortunately won't be able to happen again because in a change to

:35:29.:35:33.

the format the organisers have only allowed one nation in one event. So,

:35:34.:35:39.

we won't see that action or that same level of success but that

:35:40.:35:44.

silver medal for David Florence was his second silver in as many games.

:35:45.:35:49.

He arrived here with his father, flying the plane for the whole canoe

:35:50.:35:54.

slalom team, and he arrived here safe and well and ready to make sure

:35:55.:35:58.

he leaves Rio with a medal of a different colour this time.

:35:59.:36:05.

They've got the silver medal! David Florence is out of this Olympic

:36:06.:36:15.

competition. This is Lea Valley, a place that has bittersweet feelings

:36:16.:36:21.

for you. You won the silver in London 2012, but then it didn't go

:36:22.:36:25.

quite as you'd like it too. I don't associated with that. This is where

:36:26.:36:31.

I put in all the hard work and this is where I've had all my great

:36:32.:36:36.

performances. I won the World Cup, the world Championships here. David

:36:37.:36:40.

Florence, the world champion from 2013, is the world champion again in

:36:41.:36:46.

2015. But, you know, I look back at the Olympics in London and I think,

:36:47.:36:50.

there was some disappointment in the C1. It seems a long time ago and

:36:51.:36:57.

almost forgotten now, strangely. You are quite philosophical about it and

:36:58.:37:04.

I suppose you have to be. It is a real advantage to be able to accept

:37:05.:37:10.

things that are out of your control. If you can accept that, you can work

:37:11.:37:14.

on the things that are under your control which is far more motivating

:37:15.:37:18.

and far more likely to give you the best chance possible of helping you

:37:19.:37:22.

achieve what you want, which is gold medals in Rio. I motivated and

:37:23.:37:27.

driven, and I've trained to the best of my ability for this Olympic cycle

:37:28.:37:31.

and if I get everything right, I give myself a good chance. You're a

:37:32.:37:35.

father since London and you're going to be a father again, you're

:37:36.:37:41.

married, and a in your life. Has it done anything for you? It's one of

:37:42.:37:45.

these things, it is the most ordinary thing to do in the world,

:37:46.:37:50.

to have children, but when it is you, it seems exciting and it is a

:37:51.:37:54.

lot of fun. And I love having a family to go back to, but it hasn't

:37:55.:37:58.

changed the way I go about completing my sport or what I'm

:37:59.:38:03.

trying to do in Rio. How would you compare yourself for years and?

:38:04.:38:08.

Older and wiser? I've had a very good Olympic cycle, the best yet.

:38:09.:38:14.

I'd never won the world championships prior to the Olympic

:38:15.:38:17.

Games, and I've won three world championship titles. I'm enjoying my

:38:18.:38:22.

career as ever, and I've had a lot of good runs in the last few years.

:38:23.:38:26.

It's going to come down to making the most of every training session

:38:27.:38:31.

and every opportunity to learn. And being as ready as I possibly can.

:38:32.:38:35.

What would it mean to you to get a gold medal? It would be an

:38:36.:38:39.

incredible achievement, something that I don't take lightly as to how

:38:40.:38:43.

difficult it is to achieving, even if you are the best in the world.

:38:44.:38:48.

There are so many guys in our sport to have been standout athletes. It

:38:49.:38:52.

would be a phenomenal achievement. And something I'd be very proud of.

:38:53.:39:01.

Well, he's had a four year wait to try and win Olympic gold again, and

:39:02.:39:05.

he's had an even more delayed weight this afternoon just because of the

:39:06.:39:09.

weather but David Florence will take to the canoe slalom course in the

:39:10.:39:14.

C1. We can join our commentators down there in Diadora, Helen Reeves

:39:15.:39:24.

and Patrick Atherton. Welcome to the canoe slalom. The

:39:25.:39:32.

heats have just got under way. No one has negotiated the course well.

:39:33.:39:38.

We will see some better runs as they go through the startled. 19 in the

:39:39.:39:43.

C1 event, and the best in terms of world ranking going last. This is

:39:44.:39:48.

Rossi of Argentina who has struggled on the course so far. The best time

:39:49.:40:03.

has come from Rossi of China -- Jianming Shu of China. Burrows of

:40:04.:40:15.

Australia, and he will attack the initial part of this course. Just a

:40:16.:40:20.

reminder, the first difficult section coming at Gates seven,

:40:21.:40:26.

eight, nine, ten, then 14, 15 and 16 proving problematic. Everything

:40:27.:40:31.

after gate 19th requires a lot of strength and fitness, and finesse as

:40:32.:40:34.

well. And no one has put it all together. He's getting off to a nice

:40:35.:40:41.

start, he's managing to get the power of the boat dry which means he

:40:42.:40:47.

will be fast. This is what we would expect to see. He's really driving

:40:48.:40:56.

the blade into the water, we want to see the vertical drop of the paddle

:40:57.:41:01.

in the water. Burrows, his father comes from the UK, coached by Mike

:41:02.:41:07.

Druce, and throughout 2013-14, he was a regular semifinalist and here

:41:08.:41:12.

he is in the Olympic Games, looking for a place in the semifinals in two

:41:13.:41:20.

days' time. Just has to beat five competitors to achieve that, and if

:41:21.:41:24.

he goes into top spot here, which is looking possible for Burrows, he is

:41:25.:41:31.

assured of a place. It is the best time from the two keeps that counts

:41:32.:41:40.

but without too much time from the heats, you're at your freshest. He's

:41:41.:41:44.

looking very controlled. Equally, there is nothing like having time on

:41:45.:41:48.

the water and learning about what is happening. Well, no penalties and

:41:49.:41:54.

Borrows celebrates. He is going to be good enough. 11 seconds inside

:41:55.:41:59.

the previous best, that is a fantastic run from Borrows. The

:42:00.:42:02.

Australian may decide that is enough. He may decide that is good

:42:03.:42:07.

enough to get him through. Tactics will play a part in this

:42:08.:42:11.

qualification process. Smedley now for Canada. Dropping through gate to

:42:12.:42:18.

and into that first upstream gate. Gate three, nice and quick. Paddling

:42:19.:42:25.

on the left-hand side, so in the C1, the canoe category, we have people

:42:26.:42:31.

who will paddle either on the left or right. This does determine how

:42:32.:42:35.

they may approach some of the gate sequences. Have you seen any

:42:36.:42:41.

advantages to being left or right? It is a fairly straight course.

:42:42.:42:46.

Maybe on some of the staggers but nothing will be affecting the higher

:42:47.:42:51.

ranked athletes. It is an interesting course they've developed

:42:52.:42:55.

in Diadora from gate one to 20, it is a dead straight line.

:42:56.:42:59.

Significance of that, they don't need as much water or as much height

:43:00.:43:04.

of water to generate the power because you don't lose so much power

:43:05.:43:07.

with the water driving into the side of the course, and then a little

:43:08.:43:12.

time in 20 as they go over bottom drop, as it is called, and we see

:43:13.:43:19.

Smedley do that, through that upstream gate at 19. This is where

:43:20.:43:24.

he needs to be clean and strong. He was being kicked by the way. He's

:43:25.:43:31.

struggling. His wasting precious energy which you don't have. His

:43:32.:43:36.

arms are fatigued and he's working hard to drive into the upstream

:43:37.:43:41.

gate. Three strokes to get back up to the final upstream. He is surely

:43:42.:43:50.

going to be inside second place. He goes into second, four seconds of

:43:51.:43:56.

penalties added to Smedley's time. He will be relatively happy with

:43:57.:44:00.

that but he will know there's plenty of room for improvement and I'm sure

:44:01.:44:06.

his family watching. His mum is a physio, his sister is his manager.

:44:07.:44:16.

Nice way to have it. Now the Portuguese Carvalho. Heavy start,

:44:17.:44:23.

then nicely into gate three. This is where he wants composure. This first

:44:24.:44:27.

part of the course needs to be setting yourself up, getting the

:44:28.:44:31.

drive, getting the rhythm, getting confident before you get to the

:44:32.:44:37.

tricky sections. Using the back of the water in gate eight, that

:44:38.:44:42.

swirly, upstream gate. Nine, that is looking nice. 1.29 inside, Carvalho,

:44:43.:44:59.

and the lead at the moment, Rossi overtaken by Borrows. The Australian

:45:00.:45:04.

leads. That is an impressive time. Now no option but to go back for

:45:05.:45:10.

that gate. 16 was predicted to be a problematic one. We were looking at

:45:11.:45:14.

it and there is a way that is sometimes there and sometimes not,

:45:15.:45:17.

and you can see Carvalho was waiting for the wave but it wasn't there so

:45:18.:45:23.

he shot past the gate, causing all sorts of problems and a real-time

:45:24.:45:28.

deficit now. Over bottom drop and safety up through 19 but having had

:45:29.:45:33.

a lead of over a second and a half, that would have been thrown away by

:45:34.:45:38.

the mistake at 17. And now just a question of seeing if he can squeeze

:45:39.:45:45.

into the top three. As the eighth man down. Third would be good

:45:46.:45:51.

enough. Just a reminder, two heats, and it's the fastest time from those

:45:52.:45:56.

two runs that counts. The course won't change.

:45:57.:46:03.

Very frustrated with that mistake. He will go away and I am sure he

:46:04.:46:09.

will not be making the same mistake the second run. We go on to Grzegorz

:46:10.:46:20.

Hedwig from Poland. 12th in the World Championships last year,

:46:21.:46:23.

seventh in the European Championships this year. He finished

:46:24.:46:30.

in the top ten in the pre-Olympic final, but I have a feeling they

:46:31.:46:34.

only qualified eight into the last run, quite a small attendance, so

:46:35.:46:38.

they can't read too much into that but all the teams have been out here

:46:39.:46:42.

and, in fact, the British have been out here more than anyone else. Yes,

:46:43.:46:48.

I saw the Brits on Facebook saying it was the 12th week out here and

:46:49.:46:52.

they have utilised every single bit of water time they possibly could

:46:53.:46:55.

which is why they did early selection last October so they could

:46:56.:46:58.

utilise the trading slots because the international committee set out

:46:59.:47:02.

official training slots where people could come in and other teams were

:47:03.:47:06.

taking nine weeks here so it has been a lot of training and that is

:47:07.:47:11.

the key in slalom, it is all about knowing the water, every single inch

:47:12.:47:14.

of it and whether it changes or whether it doesn't. He didn't have

:47:15.:47:25.

the problem that we saw from Jose Carvalho of Portugal at 16 and this

:47:26.:47:29.

is looking like a nice run from Grzegorz Hedwig. He is really

:47:30.:47:34.

managing to keep the boat speed on. He is lining himself up for the last

:47:35.:47:39.

upstream gaped. It is all about being tied in with one stroke Young

:47:40.:47:45.

1/ driving out. The last gate now for Grzegorz Hedwig. The drive for

:47:46.:47:49.

the line under fractions of a section -- second could be

:47:50.:47:55.

important. Jose Carvalho three goes ahead of Ian Borrows. The top four

:47:56.:48:08.

positions are Grzegorz Hedwig and Ian Borrows and then the Brazilian.

:48:09.:48:17.

Aleksandr Lipatov now for Russia. He is 25 years old and a tidy unsafe

:48:18.:48:21.

paddler. He has a long reach which makes him look as though he is going

:48:22.:48:24.

slower than everyone else, it is the size of his reach that is deceptive.

:48:25.:48:30.

He trained at one of the regular used World Cup courses a lot of the

:48:31.:48:34.

time. It is very different to this one. It certainly is. He is using

:48:35.:48:42.

steering strokes and being very patient between Gates seven and

:48:43.:48:46.

eight where it is quite changeable. He was just waiting to see what

:48:47.:48:49.

would happen and then putting a stroke in. It is all about reading,

:48:50.:48:53.

and the experience sometimes helps in these circumstances where you

:48:54.:48:56.

can't go all guns blazing, you need to wait and see what is happening

:48:57.:49:00.

with the water and be very reactive. The wave is not quite very had to

:49:01.:49:06.

work hardly just ducked inside 16, the athletes have three very careful

:49:07.:49:08.

when they are leaning back because it is up to the judges because they

:49:09.:49:14.

will look very closely to CF they had some of their head and some of

:49:15.:49:18.

their body in and if they don't they will be awarded a penalty. 2.08

:49:19.:49:22.

outside the best time now at the moment. A 52nd penalty will

:49:23.:49:29.

obviously ruin this run, if he's got it, caught in the hydraulic fair and

:49:30.:49:33.

just churned around. He may possibly decide that this is not going to be

:49:34.:49:38.

the run accounts but surely he wants to post something respectable just

:49:39.:49:41.

to take the pressure off his second round. They will go in the same

:49:42.:49:49.

order so at halfway down the field Aleksandr Lipatov won't have the

:49:50.:49:52.

luxury of sitting out the second run after this performance. He is five

:49:53.:49:57.

-- here's five seconds outside the best time set by Grzegorz Hedwig of

:49:58.:50:02.

Poland and work to do for Aleksandr Lipatov. He got to the semifinal in

:50:03.:50:05.

Lee Valley last year and he wants to go one better. Now, back to the top

:50:06.:50:17.

Vitezslav Gebas of the Czech Republic has made many of the finals

:50:18.:50:25.

in the last few years which is a sign of consistency. Consistency is

:50:26.:50:28.

a real key, when you're coming to major competitions you know you

:50:29.:50:33.

should be at the final and Olympic Games competitions are not as deep

:50:34.:50:36.

as in a World Cup or World Championship and get into the final

:50:37.:50:39.

is all about getting that. First of all you have to get to the Olympic

:50:40.:50:43.

Games in an incredibly difficult selection process but once you are

:50:44.:50:46.

there you must have consistency and this is all really just a process to

:50:47.:50:51.

get them into that final in a couple of days. As you explained earlier

:50:52.:50:56.

the format for this race is so different from World Cups and World

:50:57.:51:00.

Championships. If we take Lee Valley, the World Championships last

:51:01.:51:04.

year, for example, in the men's K1 for example there were 102 entrance

:51:05.:51:08.

and there are only 21 here so you see different psychologies. It is

:51:09.:51:15.

that gate 16 that is causing problems again. It is the surge in

:51:16.:51:21.

the course and when the wave is that it's not too bad but when it is

:51:22.:51:24.

there to give you the assistance to get across to the right-hand side

:51:25.:51:27.

the danger is that you slip by and in the qualification process you

:51:28.:51:30.

have no option but to make your way back up and it clatters the next of

:51:31.:51:35.

the upstream gaped at 19. The tale got dipped down there again at gate

:51:36.:51:40.

20 an hour surfing across into 21, this is eating away into the time

:51:41.:51:46.

deficit that he already occurred at going back to 16. Is it wise to sit

:51:47.:51:51.

and watch this, there have been plenty of mistakes, will people be

:51:52.:51:56.

unnerved by that all learn from it? They will learn from it. The course

:51:57.:52:02.

is relatively straightforward. It is a technical course anyway and

:52:03.:52:05.

they've all spent many hours training and watching it so they

:52:06.:52:08.

won't be unnerved but they will certainly take some of the tips that

:52:09.:52:13.

they have seen and put that into their own processes and their own

:52:14.:52:20.

plans. So, from Vitezslav Gebas to the Czech Republic -- of the Czech

:52:21.:52:25.

Republic to the USA and we have Casey Eichfeld who is racing in the

:52:26.:52:33.

C1 embassy two. Casey Eichfeld has a busy programme. He paddles for wild

:52:34.:52:40.

water Canoe club and he is the sort of man who has plenty of raw speed

:52:41.:52:47.

so if he has a clear run he will be quick. You can see that from the

:52:48.:52:51.

clock already. He is inside the fastest time from Grzegorz Hedwig.

:52:52.:52:59.

Oh, my goodness, that is not what he wanted to do. I was about to say he

:53:00.:53:02.

was really using the power but then he just got the tale of the boat

:53:03.:53:07.

caught and he spun himself around far too quickly and he wasn't

:53:08.:53:16.

expecting that. It makes Gates 15 and 16 relatively easy and he is no

:53:17.:53:19.

doubt well aware of the problems it has been causing other athletes.

:53:20.:53:25.

Casey Eichfeld I think in his second run, provided this one is good, will

:53:26.:53:32.

take more risks here. A great line between 20 and 21, he got the nose

:53:33.:53:35.

of the boat round, pointing river right so he could drive across. .

:53:36.:53:41.

The last upstream gate is a heavy cross, you can see him really

:53:42.:53:48.

digging deep on his crossbar. This is respectable, it will not take the

:53:49.:53:53.

teat -- lead away from Grzegorz Hedwig but it should be good enough.

:53:54.:53:58.

Remember from 19 paddlers, we will be whittling it down to 14 for the

:53:59.:54:10.

semifinal in two days' time. Number seven Ander Elosegi of Spain. Bronze

:54:11.:54:14.

at the European Championships recently and picked up four

:54:15.:54:17.

penalties in that race and he knows he would have been in the medals if

:54:18.:54:22.

he had gone clean. Two Spanish boats in these Olympics, both with good

:54:23.:54:34.

chances. Nice and tight there under eight, he used the wave really well

:54:35.:54:38.

between seven and eight and a nice turn around nine and ten and he is

:54:39.:54:43.

up on the split. Half a second up. He just needs to keep the nose

:54:44.:54:47.

tracking nicely downstream, keep the paddle strokes nice indeed. You have

:54:48.:54:51.

to remember this is the first time they are down the scores in this

:54:52.:54:55.

Olympic Games. Oh, he touched the outside poll. We will be discussing

:54:56.:54:59.

with the coaches yesterday about the poll heights and they are very

:55:00.:55:03.

regulated and they have to be extremely precise and every gate has

:55:04.:55:06.

to be the same but with changeable water has to be quite tricky and the

:55:07.:55:10.

athletes have two decide whether they will take the risk of taking

:55:11.:55:13.

the bow under the polls which is where you want to be because it is

:55:14.:55:18.

the fastest line but do you seek around outside which could take a

:55:19.:55:23.

fraction of time. He may have saved half a second but he threw away two

:55:24.:55:27.

by touching the gate. Remember this man has a pretty good Olympic

:55:28.:55:34.

record. Fourth in 2008 and fourth in 2012. Can he turn those two results

:55:35.:55:38.

into a medal this time around? It will be a really tough task with

:55:39.:55:45.

some really big paddlers here, and across the line for Ander Elosegi in

:55:46.:55:49.

another solid time, just outside Grzegorz Hedwig and he goes into

:55:50.:55:56.

second place. The Brazilian is still around the bottom of the field and

:55:57.:56:00.

without doubt he will have two improving the second run if he wants

:56:01.:56:05.

a chance of going through. We have six paddlers still to go and the

:56:06.:56:08.

first of those is Sideris Tasiadis from Germany. He is really driving

:56:09.:56:18.

across the start with a very quick paddle rate. They all have different

:56:19.:56:22.

styles. He has a very quick paddle right. Tight around three. As I

:56:23.:56:27.

mentioned earlier, they are really looking at the lines ahead of what

:56:28.:56:30.

they are coming into so in a stagger sequence they know where they need

:56:31.:56:33.

to be at the end and they will try to get the lines as precise as

:56:34.:56:37.

possible. It quickly uses the backflow of the Eddie upstream there

:56:38.:56:42.

and a quick turn at nine. He has his nose bouncing on the top of the

:56:43.:56:45.

water and it is all about keeping the bow of the boat as dry as

:56:46.:56:48.

possible because every time water goes on the front of the boat it

:56:49.:56:52.

kills the boat speed and you have to re-accelerate again, using energy

:56:53.:56:55.

that you don't want to. Nicely in the upstream. Across the back of 15

:56:56.:57:00.

and certainly there will be no problems coming across to 16. He

:57:01.:57:07.

took the silver medal in 2012. Is he in the sort of form to do it again?

:57:08.:57:12.

The man who denied him last time is no longer in the paddling scene so

:57:13.:57:20.

maybe he feels that his opportunity. He is a bit low at 19 but again he

:57:21.:57:24.

is getting into a tricky bit and getting caught by the way. I am

:57:25.:57:30.

noticing that the righty paddlers, the paddlers that dominate

:57:31.:57:33.

predominately on the right-hand side are finding this easier here because

:57:34.:57:37.

they need to turn the bow around when they hit the stopper

:57:38.:57:41.

afterwards. The lefties are finding it more difficult because they don't

:57:42.:57:44.

have the same strength. It will be interesting to see whether they

:57:45.:57:47.

change anything between the two heats. 3.8 outside after that

:57:48.:57:56.

mistake at 16. 96.6 seven. He is showing us that he has got class but

:57:57.:58:04.

he needs to iron out those mistakes. Sideris Tasiadis will not win this

:58:05.:58:07.

Olympics with a performance like that. Onto Japan now and unexciting

:58:08.:58:13.

paddler, Takuya Haneda. He actually lives in practice love and he is a

:58:14.:58:17.

silky smooth paddler. Have a look at his top arm. Always as straight as

:58:18.:58:22.

you like, which is slightly unusual, but very very effective. Seventh in

:58:23.:58:27.

the last Olympics and he has two good World Cups, he was fourth and

:58:28.:58:38.

then later he finished third. He was beaten both times by a man who is

:58:39.:58:42.

not here. So many big names absence to the Olympics due to the

:58:43.:58:46.

qualifying process and many say it is harder to get to the Olympics and

:58:47.:58:50.

is to win it. It certainly has been said and is because there is only

:58:51.:58:56.

one place by nation and a lot of Nations could easily have three on a

:58:57.:58:59.

podium if you happen to be their day because they have such strength and

:59:00.:59:03.

depth so it is a very difficult process to get the Olympic Games and

:59:04.:59:07.

it does mean that normally in the Olympic year these guys are on

:59:08.:59:10.

absolute fire because they have had to push so hard to get here. So many

:59:11.:59:16.

different nations. Take the top ten nations, they have all got a

:59:17.:59:20.

different qualifying process. The Brits actually qualified very early,

:59:21.:59:23.

just so they knew the team and they could bring them out to Brazil and

:59:24.:59:27.

train them on the course. Other nations, like Germany, made their

:59:28.:59:32.

decisions quite late. Absolutely. Each nation do what they think is

:59:33.:59:35.

best and certainly the Brits, this time round, it is the first time

:59:36.:59:40.

they've done it, qualified team the year before the Olympic Games. Oh,

:59:41.:59:44.

being caught thereby that stopper, you have to keep your focus right to

:59:45.:59:51.

the end! That could have cost him the top spot but I think it will be

:59:52.:59:56.

good enough to put him through. Grzegorz Hedwig on 96.67 and Takuya

:59:57.:00:04.

Haneda has two penalties and he is on 98.6 nine. He is into fourth

:00:05.:00:12.

position as we watch Britain's number one, David Florence, what a

:00:13.:00:15.

record this man having major championships. Of course he took the

:00:16.:00:19.

silver medal in the C2 in London 2012 but he is the current world

:00:20.:00:24.

champion, having taken the title on home water in Lee Valley last year

:00:25.:00:29.

and that dynamic start from David Florence. Watch the clock and the

:00:30.:00:34.

splits, he is not hanging about. I suspect he wants to do one run and

:00:35.:00:41.

one run only. I imagine that is his game plan. That will spin there was

:00:42.:00:45.

part of the plan. It depends what side you paddler, as I mentioned

:00:46.:00:48.

earlier it depends what needs you decide to do and that was the first

:00:49.:00:52.

I seen anyone do a deliberate spin. David Florence full set me beyond

:00:53.:00:55.

this course to lay down his mark as early as the Canada looks like he's

:00:56.:01:00.

on to a good run at the moment, looking strong. 14, 15 and 16,

:01:01.:01:03.

remember have provided problems. He is a how we can thought his way

:01:04.:01:20.

across the water. A great example of how the right has an example at gay

:01:21.:01:23.

16. Did he get a touch? 61 on the clock at the moment and he is almost

:01:24.:01:26.

half a second inside Grzegorz Hedwig. Going into the top two

:01:27.:01:28.

should be good enough. He just ducks his head into 21 and he almost looks

:01:29.:01:31.

as though there is no stopper there and he is in great form. That is a

:01:32.:01:37.

nice move as well across into the final upstream at 23 back into the

:01:38.:01:41.

flour 24 and down through the last stop and now it is all about driving

:01:42.:01:45.

for the line. David Florence looking for the fastest time at he is going

:01:46.:01:51.

to be inside. Those bottom six gates sensational. He can pack his bags

:01:52.:01:56.

and head home to rest for 48 hours. Be interesting to see if he comes

:01:57.:02:00.

out just familiarise himself but it just looked to me as he wanted a

:02:01.:02:04.

brilliant time. That makes a statement to the rest of the field.

:02:05.:02:08.

The rest of the paddlers will be concerned about that. Great news to

:02:09.:02:12.

David Florence. He is the fastest time so far.

:02:13.:02:22.

Those three the highest ranking in the world at the moment. This is

:02:23.:02:36.

Benjamin Savsek from Slovenia, he lives in Micron. 0.71 up on the

:02:37.:02:45.

split. He does it like he's flooding and driving, almost dancing on top

:02:46.:02:50.

of the water. He just needs to keep it in control. Nicely round Gate 14.

:02:51.:02:55.

Gets the nose turned round, very nicely done, 16 happen to be there

:02:56.:03:03.

for him that time. Finished second behind Florence in the World

:03:04.:03:07.

Championships last year. Finished eighth in the Olympics, Florence on

:03:08.:03:11.

that occasion was down in tenth, but don't forget that the last four

:03:12.:03:16.

gates David Florence was electric and he did not make a mistake like

:03:17.:03:20.

that, I think that is Savsek's chance of going into the lead gone.

:03:21.:03:25.

When he looks at the replay and realise he was leading at 19, 20,

:03:26.:03:29.

that give the boost he wants for the big in two days' time. You have to

:03:30.:03:37.

keep that down the whole length of the course. You have got to keep

:03:38.:03:40.

your faith and keep enough energy so that you have got the power in your

:03:41.:03:47.

arms. 5.58, that is how quick it can turn around. He was 1.71 up with

:03:48.:03:55.

just five gates to go. Ends up over five seconds behind. Focus and

:03:56.:03:58.

concentration needed from Benjamin Savsek. If he is to end up this

:03:59.:04:08.

campaign as Olympic champion. Two very exciting paddlers coming up.

:04:09.:04:16.

The world champion in 2011, Denis Gargaud Chanut. He uses the water

:04:17.:04:20.

brilliantly well. He reads it perfectly. You may need to do that.

:04:21.:04:25.

He will challenge the time of David Florence today. Keep an eye on the

:04:26.:04:35.

clock. Driving across, using the offside with the cross-bow Strait.

:04:36.:04:43.

These canoes are kneeling up, they are sitting on their knees. Smooth

:04:44.:04:51.

at the moment or stop a fraction up on the first split that we saw.

:04:52.:04:57.

Looks so good when he goes over the drops, keeps the front of the boat

:04:58.:05:01.

nice and dry, keeps a speed through 15, shouldn't have a problem through

:05:02.:05:06.

16, he doesn't, that is as good as we have seen all day from the

:05:07.:05:10.

Frenchman. He looks to be on fire. Back into the flow quickly. No

:05:11.:05:17.

problems through 18. 1.5 nine. In a similar position to the one we saw

:05:18.:05:22.

from Benjamin Savsek. Savsek making mistakes at 19 and 20. Getting held

:05:23.:05:28.

on 20, that is two seconds gone and again the hydraulic getting the

:05:29.:05:32.

better of the Frenchman. It really is proving to be much more tricky

:05:33.:05:38.

for the left-handed competitors. That is why he decided to go for the

:05:39.:05:43.

spin move, that did not seem to go particularly well. He will be

:05:44.:05:47.

looking at that to come out for the second run and doing much better.

:05:48.:05:58.

Very frustrating. 7.92 outside. That cross stroke coming through 15, 16

:05:59.:06:03.

and really struggling on that bottom section. Could be that they are put

:06:04.:06:09.

out all of their energy in the first 20 gates and they have nothing left

:06:10.:06:12.

to give but they will learn something today, save something for

:06:13.:06:21.

the bottom five gates. He is a huge man, Benus, with a massive reach and

:06:22.:06:25.

will be taking advantage of that today. Four consecutive World

:06:26.:06:31.

Championship finals. You expect him to make at least the semifinal, if

:06:32.:06:40.

not to win it he seems to be taking his time and placing his paddles

:06:41.:06:44.

well. He seems as if he is a little bit on age. Needs to pick up the

:06:45.:06:51.

pace. Looks a little bit edgy. Needs to open up and be confident in the

:06:52.:06:59.

line that he's chosen. Surfing back and really pulling the nose around,

:07:00.:07:10.

catching that halfway, into 16. Needs to be gone at 17, very quick

:07:11.:07:18.

in and out at the upstream gates. Matej Benus making it look slow and

:07:19.:07:23.

safe but he is still only 0.8 outside. He is not wasted NEG so

:07:24.:07:33.

far. Matej Benus is safely through. One more upstream to go. He pulls

:07:34.:07:38.

his way across. He drops a little low, two extra strokes needed,

:07:39.:07:43.

drives the line, should not have any problems through 24. Just look for

:07:44.:07:53.

the fast water, and he finds it. 95.05, the time, which leaves world

:07:54.:07:57.

champion David Florence on top of the leaderboard after the first

:07:58.:08:04.

heat. And the top time, 94.1 one. Sensational stuff from David

:08:05.:08:14.

Florence. -- 94.11. Both Florence and Matej Benus are right-handers

:08:15.:08:21.

and seem to do that last section through 19-23 easier than the

:08:22.:08:25.

left-handed paddlers. It will be interesting to see how they come out

:08:26.:08:29.

in the second run, whether they decide to go for the spin at Gate

:08:30.:08:40.

20. David Florence doubling up in C-2. The core things are different.

:08:41.:08:45.

Top of the leaderboard, 94.11. Remember, 14 going through, only

:08:46.:09:09.

five athletes go out, the men on the bottom of the chart. At this slalom

:09:10.:09:15.

venue. They haven't got long to prepare themselves. Such a short

:09:16.:09:22.

interval between that. So often, they find that the fatty is still

:09:23.:09:26.

there. It will be interesting to see what they do. They will plan, they

:09:27.:09:31.

will make sure that they rehydrate and that they come out fighting.

:09:32.:09:36.

They will look at the video review, have a quick change, and they will

:09:37.:09:40.

be ready. It is a very tight turnaround. What an exemplary run

:09:41.:09:51.

from the world number one, David Florence. We have Matthew Pinsent

:09:52.:10:00.

joining us now. Matthew, job done. Feeling very happy about that

:10:01.:10:04.

performance. From David's point of view you'd want at the minimum to

:10:05.:10:09.

have a solid run but to come off the water and be the quickest of all

:10:10.:10:13.

over the course, as you say, absolutely job done. The world

:10:14.:10:17.

champion cementing his form from last year into the Rio competition.

:10:18.:10:23.

He seemed to get off to an absolute blinder shaving tenths of a second

:10:24.:10:29.

off that. They are familiar with this course because they have been

:10:30.:10:34.

here for a week, ten days, training on the course over the last six

:10:35.:10:38.

months. The way that it has worked, ever since this course has been

:10:39.:10:43.

built, the governing body has divided up the time and allowed

:10:44.:10:47.

certain teams onto the course to experience it, and Team GB have

:10:48.:10:51.

taken every possible chance to be here. The running total for the

:10:52.:10:55.

British paddlers is something like 12 weeks they have been out here in

:10:56.:10:58.

total. Seizing any moment to experience this water, learning is

:10:59.:11:05.

various idiosyncrasies. They will not see exactly how the gates are

:11:06.:11:13.

laid out until today. Absolutely, chapeau, hats off to David Florence,

:11:14.:11:16.

seizing that moment in the first run. Nicely done from David. We will

:11:17.:11:24.

be back with Matthew later on and we'll see Joe Clarke are taking to

:11:25.:11:29.

the water in the excitement there, we have been enjoying things down at

:11:30.:11:35.

the Olympics Tennis Centre. That is Centre court right now. It has been

:11:36.:11:39.

featuring arguably the greatest female tennis player in the modern

:11:40.:11:47.

era. Let's bring you up to date. Serena Williams is through to the

:11:48.:11:52.

last 32 of the Women's Singles. The reigning Olympic champion breezing

:11:53.:12:07.

past Gavilova, winning 6-4, 6-2. Not too bad at all for Great Britain's

:12:08.:12:13.

women in rugby, three wins of three in group C, and they made light work

:12:14.:12:20.

of Canada, winning 22-0. Emily Scarratt with a couple of tries. We

:12:21.:12:26.

have had no action so far today in the rowing. The weather putting paid

:12:27.:12:33.

to that. We have seen boats overturning and so that the safety

:12:34.:12:38.

of all the athletes, we are seeing no rowing until further notice at

:12:39.:12:46.

the Lagoa Stadium. Who's that? Don't take her away. Do you want to come

:12:47.:12:51.

and say hello to the BBC Four audience? Can you say hello in

:12:52.:12:59.

English? Hello! How about that? What is your main? It is Naomi. High

:13:00.:13:10.

five. Naomi, you are start back at home in the UK. Naomi is our new

:13:11.:13:17.

number one fan. I will let you get back to your dad. Look at this. It

:13:18.:13:25.

is a family affair. Naomi and family, thank you very much indeed.

:13:26.:13:30.

The atmosphere is buzzing at the Olympic Park. It has taken some

:13:31.:13:39.

time, and although we have lost the sunshine, we're going to top boxing

:13:40.:13:44.

now. Great hopes for Britain in the boxing after three gold medals in

:13:45.:13:49.

London 2012, they have sent the biggest team in the last 32 years,

:13:50.:13:56.

including 12 fighters from the 13 available, including Joshua Buatsi

:13:57.:14:01.

in the light heavyweight category. He is studying a sports science and

:14:02.:14:05.

management course and has put that on hold to try to be successful at

:14:06.:14:09.

the Olympics here in Rio. Just imagine what it would be like if he

:14:10.:14:15.

went back to Queen Mary University in September for the new semester

:14:16.:14:20.

with her Olympic medal. It would be an incredible story. Let's head over

:14:21.:14:26.

to Riocentro six, where the boxing is taking place. We will join it in

:14:27.:14:27.

the second round of three. Taking us through this is Richie

:14:28.:14:40.

Woodall and Ronald McIntosh. To the second round we go. Joshua Buatsi

:14:41.:14:49.

took the opening round and looked at the response that has elicited from

:14:50.:14:59.

Katande. He will be aware that he has conceded the opening round. That

:15:00.:15:04.

is a cracking shot. It has been ruled as a slip by the referee.

:15:05.:15:09.

Surely that helped him to that prone position on the canvas.

:15:10.:15:20.

Has got to keep that guard. Nice switch of attack. He has got to keep

:15:21.:15:29.

working with the jab, keep breaking the opponent down with the jab and

:15:30.:15:39.

setting up the right uppercut. By working with the jab, you are not

:15:40.:15:43.

getting too close to your opponent because this man is dangerous. Work

:15:44.:15:51.

with the jab, stay at distance and then bring the right hand through.

:15:52.:15:58.

As they broke away, there was a cracking shot on a downward

:15:59.:16:08.

trajectory from Buatsi. Katende felt the pain of the forceful punch to

:16:09.:16:15.

the body. Right hand to the head this time. He is picking that shot

:16:16.:16:29.

very effectively to Katende. Buatsi has already experienced standing on

:16:30.:16:38.

top of a medal podium. When he won the Olympic test event at the back

:16:39.:16:44.

end of last year here in Rio. Victory in the final over his

:16:45.:16:49.

familiar rival, Peter Mullan burg. It was the Dutch soldier who Buatsi

:16:50.:16:59.

prevailed over at the gold medal bout in Turkey to secure his Olympic

:17:00.:17:07.

place here. What is important for Buatsi, when he lands the body shop,

:17:08.:17:13.

don't hold the feet too long. He's soaking it all up, he's looking for

:17:14.:17:17.

the one shot over the top. If you have landed a body shot and you hold

:17:18.:17:23.

your feet, there is a chance Katende could land that shot. Looking at his

:17:24.:17:30.

corner. Running repairs to the right boot laces. I suspect Katende will

:17:31.:17:39.

welcome this respite. Look at the manner in which he is holding his

:17:40.:17:42.

arms over the ropes because he has taken some fearful shots to the body

:17:43.:17:51.

from Buatsi. Buatsi, has the reach. It is a fast left-hand bat Katende

:17:52.:17:58.

possesses. Lovely shot. Has worked well downstairs. Switches the attack

:17:59.:18:02.

and then creates a bit of himself because his opponent comes back.

:18:03.:18:11.

That was such a dominant round, it might be that -- eight. It is.

:18:12.:18:20.

Joshua Buatsi is in a commanding position. That, another one of the

:18:21.:18:31.

vagaries of Olympic boxing. You generally have to put your man on

:18:32.:18:35.

the floor in Olympic boxing. Dominant round such as Buatsi

:18:36.:18:41.

enjoyed during the cause of round number two, enough to score it 10-8

:18:42.:18:54.

in his favour. The man wearing blue, Joshua Buatsi has one foot into the

:18:55.:19:01.

second round now because barring a calamitous third and final round,

:19:02.:19:07.

the 3-point margin that he enjoys from the judges, it should be

:19:08.:19:11.

enough, even if he concedes this final round, to see him progress to

:19:12.:19:17.

round number two of the Olympic tournament. Again, he continues to

:19:18.:19:25.

hit the rib cage of Kennedy Katende. Competing in his second Olympic

:19:26.:19:31.

Games and this has been a painful reintroduction to Olympic

:19:32.:19:33.

competition because Buatsi is hitting him with four Loveridge on

:19:34.:19:39.

his torso with both the left and the right-hand. Katende has been hurt,

:19:40.:19:44.

time and again downstairs. Buatsi, doesn't want to get complacent.

:19:45.:19:50.

Sensible boxing behind his jab. See out the contest. I'm sure that is

:19:51.:19:54.

what the coach will have said in the corner. He would have been happy

:19:55.:20:00.

with him, but at the same time, don't get complacent. Get the job

:20:01.:20:04.

done. Box sensibly now in this round. 26 boxes contesting the

:20:05.:20:17.

heavyweight contest. His body language isn't good. Follow-up

:20:18.:20:22.

right-hand came over and his boxing stance betrayed him and the towel

:20:23.:20:27.

has come in. Buatsi has scored the third stoppage in the boxing

:20:28.:20:43.

tournament at Rio 2016. What an Olympic debut from Great Britain's

:20:44.:20:51.

Joshua Buatsi. He progresses through to the second round. That will be

:20:52.:20:58.

the 11th of August in the morning session.

:20:59.:21:05.

Very impressive. Thank you very much. I am grateful for the win. I

:21:06.:21:20.

am glad he is OK. He is tough, but the aim is to eliminate anyone in

:21:21.:21:27.

front of me. The aim is to get the win, that is what we got, so I am

:21:28.:21:29.

grateful for that. Joshua Buatsi getting off to an

:21:30.:21:49.

absolute flyer. Hold everything because TeamGB's flag bearer has

:21:50.:21:55.

taken to the field. Andy Murray is out on Centre Court straight after

:21:56.:21:59.

the Serena Williams victory in the singles. He is here to retain the

:22:00.:22:07.

title he won in 2012. The two time Wimbledon champion, he said holding

:22:08.:22:10.

that flag in the opening ceremony was the proudest moment in his

:22:11.:22:15.

career. Adding another Olympic gold wouldn't be a bad way to follow it

:22:16.:22:21.

up. We'll keep you across everything centre court here on BBC Four. He is

:22:22.:22:27.

facing Viktor Troicki ski, and he has played beaten before. But Andy

:22:28.:22:32.

Murray opening his Olympic account on centre court. We expect the

:22:33.:22:38.

British contingent in that arena to make some noise. Earlier, you would

:22:39.:22:42.

have seen David Florence, the world number

:22:43.:22:53.

one in the C1. He spoke afterwards to David Pinson. How was your

:22:54.:23:02.

experience on the cause? Really good. Definitely had a few troubles

:23:03.:23:07.

on the way down, as is so often on a Palu slalom run. -- canoe. It looks

:23:08.:23:15.

like it will be enough, obviously there is the second run to come, but

:23:16.:23:19.

I am pleased with the good start. What did your coach say to you from

:23:20.:23:27.

the concrete? He said, spot on. Not a bit tied up around gate number

:23:28.:23:32.

three, but he said it was a good refocus and solid paddling. I did

:23:33.:23:38.

the safe option in the middle where I did a spin manoeuvre. You have got

:23:39.:23:47.

lots of racing this week, how do you make the decision, is it a balancing

:23:48.:23:51.

act whether you do a second run in an early round like this? By me, if

:23:52.:23:58.

I am certain I have done enough to get through, but generally speaking

:23:59.:24:01.

if you do enough to get through, it doesn't matter if you are first

:24:02.:24:06.

14th, the crucial thing is not to be 15th or below. If the first run is

:24:07.:24:14.

good enough, we will save our energy for the next one. How does it feel

:24:15.:24:19.

to be back in Team GB kit? It is very nice. It is a massive honour,

:24:20.:24:24.

particularly in this sport when there is only one athlete

:24:25.:24:28.

representing each nation. It is a brutal getting that spot. The guy

:24:29.:24:32.

from Great Britain who is not here was third at the World Championships

:24:33.:24:37.

last year. For me to be in Rio is incredible and I am happy to be

:24:38.:24:45.

here. Good luck. He barely seems out of breath. Let's talk to Matt Pinson

:24:46.:24:49.

's. Map you a fantastic way to to set things up to the K1, because we

:24:50.:24:59.

have Joe Clark? Yes, he is at a different stage of his career. He is

:25:00.:25:05.

the veteran of the Team GB paddlers. Joe is upcoming and a medal is an

:25:06.:25:10.

outside possibility the him and with these early rounds, it is a matter

:25:11.:25:14.

of getting down the cause, getting a solid run I'm getting through to the

:25:15.:25:18.

semis and building for the remaining days of the competition. When you

:25:19.:25:24.

are competing, you have a guy who was the more experienced guy in

:25:25.:25:30.

David Lawrence. Have been talking to Joe, making sure he's feeling

:25:31.:25:37.

comfortable. You have spent a lot of your time in Olympic competition

:25:38.:25:41.

alongside Sir Steve Redgrave, how can David galvanise Joe Tomane sure

:25:42.:25:48.

he goes away from Rio having had the best competition possible? They are

:25:49.:25:52.

a very tight group and if you look at some of their social media, they

:25:53.:25:58.

are staying in the same flat in the Olympic Village. Fiona Pennie will

:25:59.:26:03.

be the additional person from the single paddlers. David Hounslow as

:26:04.:26:10.

well who is in the C2 with David Florence. Sorry, Richard Hounslow.

:26:11.:26:18.

They are a very tight group and it is important they interact and they

:26:19.:26:21.

are feeding off one another and energising the group. We are about

:26:22.:26:26.

to see the K1. This is the first heat for the K1.

:26:27.:26:44.

Great news for Britain with David Florence going so well. We have

:26:45.:26:51.

another British representative in this event. Joe Clark is number 15

:26:52.:26:56.

to go. He has another ten minutes or so before he will get to feel the

:26:57.:27:03.

water. Michael Tayler is next the Canada. Pedro da Silva for Brazil

:27:04.:27:10.

and then Mario Leitner. 21 involved in the K1. Two runs, 15 go through.

:27:11.:27:21.

Only six men will be eliminated from these Olympics at the end of today.

:27:22.:27:29.

Taylor trying to make a mark of the start. Digging those blades in.

:27:30.:27:36.

Taken a few hits are ready from the stop us from that tough section

:27:37.:27:44.

which will eat away at your time. Wants to be improving on his 20th

:27:45.:27:50.

position in London 2012. Comes from Calgary. Another host city from the

:27:51.:28:00.

Olympics. People who say the Olympics don't inspire those cities

:28:01.:28:03.

that host them, are very much mistaken. Is that the wind picking

:28:04.:28:13.

up again? Another gate, gate 18, is looking quite hard work for Michael

:28:14.:28:22.

Tayler. Not getting the moment you would want to see. That was nicely

:28:23.:28:30.

done under 20. Three gates to go for Michael Tayler. 24-year-old. If he

:28:31.:28:37.

can go through to the semifinals, but will be an improvement on his

:28:38.:28:43.

performances from boy years ago. The time was set by Kazuki Yazawa. He

:28:44.:28:55.

will have to wait and see how good that is. That puts him down into

:28:56.:29:01.

fifth or fourth place. Fourth place for Michael Tayler at the moment

:29:02.:29:07.

with a Pedro da Silva of Brazil waiting to go at the top. Psyching

:29:08.:29:16.

himself up. He told me it was a four and a half hour drive getting from

:29:17.:29:20.

Sao Paulo to hear. We have come from the centre of Rio and it has taken

:29:21.:29:26.

us two hours every time, so I find it hard to believe. Shaky start. Two

:29:27.:29:36.

second penalty. It must be such a big experience, the crowd was really

:29:37.:29:41.

roaring when he set off from the start line. Really getting into his

:29:42.:29:47.

stride, opening up the blades. We see him steering as he gets the line

:29:48.:29:52.

into this upstream gate. This is the tricky bit where we don't see the

:29:53.:29:59.

stop. Not such a big problem for the kayak paddles because they have a

:30:00.:30:04.

blade on both sides of the boat. 14, he dropped below to feed about under

:30:05.:30:14.

the gate. Drops down into 19, two penalties added for Pedro da Silva.

:30:15.:30:18.

It could be damaging. But the crowd is behind him. They didn't do well

:30:19.:30:33.

in the C1. Round the last upstream, through the final gate for Pedro da

:30:34.:30:37.

Silva of Brazil. Will this be good enough to put him through. It is

:30:38.:30:43.

encouraging, to say the least. We don't know if it will be good enough

:30:44.:30:48.

but it is a massive performance. You can see what it means to him?

:30:49.:31:00.

He went with the flow and picked up the rhythm and let it drive down the

:31:01.:31:08.

course. Look at that excitement. The proud American champion from 2014

:31:09.:31:20.

really enjoying his outing. Next, we have Mario Leitner of Austria. The

:31:21.:31:24.

Austrians have so many good paddlers. Really tough selection. No

:31:25.:31:30.

strings in the semifinal in the World Championships last year in

:31:31.:31:37.

this category. -- no Austrians. He's looking extremely strong. You can

:31:38.:31:46.

see him really picking his straight, looking where he's going, but that

:31:47.:31:50.

was a careless touch, driving straight into the poll. Clipping his

:31:51.:32:03.

bow onto the poll. He escaped through 16 very rapidly indeed. He

:32:04.:32:08.

knows he's got to make up for that two second penalty. 15.48 the split.

:32:09.:32:16.

He is 2.4 outside the Brazilian's time at the moment. The back of the

:32:17.:32:25.

wave, the 21, he is digging deep, this long straight, trying to extend

:32:26.:32:30.

it. He's looking for some solid water a little bit lower down. Just

:32:31.:32:37.

brushed top. It is so area did, you get no pool at all on the blade. He

:32:38.:32:46.

cannot match the Brazilian, 4.8 one. Take away those two penalties and

:32:47.:32:50.

he'd be in second place, but as it is he goes third, for now. Seventh

:32:51.:32:57.

of 21 entries into the men's K-1 category with some big names coming

:32:58.:33:08.

at the back end of the start sheet. Peter Kauzer of Slovenia among those

:33:09.:33:20.

waiting. Now we watch Ohrstrom of Sweden, the first canoeist to

:33:21.:33:22.

represent Sweden at another big games. Always good to get any

:33:23.:33:28.

country on the scene at the Olympic Games. Quite a good responsibility.

:33:29.:33:34.

Nicely upstream towards Gate eight. Looking smooth at the moment. Just

:33:35.:33:39.

over two seconds up on that first split. Can he keep it in control?

:33:40.:33:45.

Got to make sure that there is enough energy in that bottom

:33:46.:33:49.

section. You see people coming in and the power is just gone. You have

:33:50.:33:54.

to utilise every bit of water so that you have the energy that you so

:33:55.:34:00.

badly need after Gate 20. It has been a busy schedule for him. Two

:34:01.:34:07.

penalties for Ohrstrom, but still inside, 0.17. The Norwegians have

:34:08.:34:16.

some of the best rivers in the world, although I know that they are

:34:17.:34:20.

frozen for half the year and they are cold until the end of August,

:34:21.:34:24.

but still, they do have the facilities. It is nice to see

:34:25.:34:29.

Ohrstrom here, he comes from the home of cross-country skiing in

:34:30.:34:41.

Sweden. Very well controlled run, and taking away those two penalties,

:34:42.:34:44.

that would be very impressive indeed. Will it be good enough? I

:34:45.:34:51.

think we will see Ohrstrom out on the water again to try and secure

:34:52.:34:55.

that position. He had the right sort of approach. It was not reckless,

:34:56.:35:00.

but he certainly did not hold back. Mike Dawson is next for New Zealand.

:35:01.:35:08.

He finished 15th in the 2012 games. He works with Campbell Walsh, the

:35:09.:35:12.

British silver medallist from Athens. Campbell has done a good job

:35:13.:35:19.

of looking after the two New Zealand paddlers. He has enjoyed himself,

:35:20.:35:29.

and yes, Campbell is an extremely technical paddler, a very like

:35:30.:35:33.

paddler, so you passed on all his years of experience. Dawson, using

:35:34.:35:40.

his body weight well, the boat speed looks good and the clock shows it,

:35:41.:35:47.

0.51 inside. He had the fastest qualifying time at the World

:35:48.:35:50.

Championships in qualifying last year, and got knocked out in the

:35:51.:35:56.

semifinals with too many penalties. 14, 15, 16, going upstream and

:35:57.:36:06.

looking strong, you conceded blades are driving in and about keeping

:36:07.:36:14.

moving. 0.82 is margin inside, a little bit down on 19 but he gets

:36:15.:36:19.

through 20 without any problem. Again, this is looking very good

:36:20.:36:24.

full stop Michael Dawson of New Zealand, and that fastest time of

:36:25.:36:30.

88.48 is under threat now, on the last upstream, driving back out into

:36:31.:36:33.

the centre of the flow, looking for the fast water down to the finish

:36:34.:36:38.

line, and Michael Dawson, no penalties, but just outside the

:36:39.:36:42.

leading time. That is tremendous performance. The Brazilians are

:36:43.:36:49.

cheering, the New Zealanders are cheering, and Brazil happy that

:36:50.:36:53.

their man stays on top. That is going to be good enough to see him

:36:54.:36:58.

through to the semifinals in three days' time. He will have so much

:36:59.:37:03.

rest. They will have to think what they are going to do with

:37:04.:37:06.

themselves. They are not used to that. Dawson has been doing lots of

:37:07.:37:11.

work with the families in the local favelas here, having seen the level

:37:12.:37:19.

of poverty, and trying to raise money with a cookbook and he has

:37:20.:37:24.

been punting some of that money onto them, which is a nice touch. Now,

:37:25.:37:32.

Meglic from Azerbaijan. He lives in Marie Baugh. Good control at the

:37:33.:37:41.

moment, ducking his head around Gate nine. The agility of these athletes

:37:42.:37:46.

is incredible. They have to be extremely flexible and have an

:37:47.:37:50.

extremely strong core to be able to throw their bodies around at the

:37:51.:37:55.

same time. Lots of these athletes live, breathe and sleep canoeing.

:37:56.:38:00.

This man is a great cost country fan and also he is a keen surfer and the

:38:01.:38:09.

surf down Abriel is sensational. He can't wait for the games to be over

:38:10.:38:13.

so that he can get down and have a go at the beach -- the surf down at

:38:14.:38:25.

Rio. Through gate 20, this is where Michael Dawson looked so good. No

:38:26.:38:30.

real problems for Meglic through that stage. The last of the

:38:31.:38:38.

upstreams 85 seconds, leaves him a long way down on that time from that

:38:39.:38:50.

silver. -- from Da Silva. Da Silva went through that in around 77.

:38:51.:39:04.

The stadium here is sandwiched between the mountain bike course and

:39:05.:39:08.

a DMX course, and five minutes down the road, the hockey and the rugby

:39:09.:39:14.

sevens both taking place at the moment. -- and the BMX course.

:39:15.:39:24.

Perhaps the biggest name in Polish K-1 not making it through. This man

:39:25.:39:32.

finished tenth anyone Championships last year. He did himself no chance

:39:33.:39:37.

-- no harm at all in terms of qualifying. He is an attacking

:39:38.:39:46.

paddler. Very aggressive style, real powerhouse. He is picking his lines

:39:47.:39:52.

very well at the moment. Got a little bit stuck there, maybe I

:39:53.:39:55.

spoke too soon, but he really took control of it. Got to keep that dry

:39:56.:40:08.

line through 15, 16. Very tight turn, eight to second penalty added

:40:09.:40:14.

to his time. Gate 17, I think it might have been. We will try and

:40:15.:40:20.

find out as we move across from 19 through to 20. Not as hard as the

:40:21.:40:28.

transition from 14 through to 15, many of them getting caught there.

:40:29.:40:39.

He is four seconds up and he ducks under the final Gate but picks up

:40:40.:40:44.

more penalties, six and all. It would have been respectable if he

:40:45.:40:50.

had stayed clean, but 18.25 seconds outside. Work to do now, for the

:40:51.:41:00.

Pole. Picked up those last penalties in 23 and 24. Very frustrating if

:41:01.:41:04.

that happens to you as a paddler. That focus has got to stay with you

:41:05.:41:10.

right until the finish line. Still a little bit of movement and that

:41:11.:41:18.

makes it a little bit more difficult to judge your line. You have to

:41:19.:41:23.

judge it more conservatively. Eigel through the first of the upstreams.

:41:24.:41:30.

He messed the World Championship final by one second. He does not

:41:31.:41:34.

want that to happen again. -- he missed. To the upstream Gate,

:41:35.:41:42.

looking very controlled. Doesn't look that fast at the moment, but he

:41:43.:41:48.

has got a good pace. Slightly down on the split, 0.80 one. You see his

:41:49.:42:00.

elbows staying low all the time. Again, just drifting and dragging

:42:01.:42:09.

upstream, strong enough to pull them down to 15, 16, 17, no problem at

:42:10.:42:17.

all, just dropping the stern between 17 and 18, that poor sap those arms.

:42:18.:42:29.

Good turn. Putting in the power there, not what you need at the

:42:30.:42:33.

bottom of the course and taking away precious time that he didn't have.

:42:34.:42:37.

He was already down two seconds prior to that. Within seven, eight

:42:38.:42:44.

seconds, he will have done well on those couple of mistakes at the

:42:45.:42:48.

bottom end of the course and he should save his energy for the

:42:49.:42:54.

second one, because he is 8.24 outside and that is without any

:42:55.:42:58.

penalties. The Russian has two tidy it up if he wants a place in the

:42:59.:43:07.

last 15. It is so competitive. Out by the stopper just above Gate 20,

:43:08.:43:16.

before 21. Now, Michal Smolen, a medallist in the World Championships

:43:17.:43:20.

Abily Valley last year. He moved from Poland to the USA at the age of

:43:21.:43:25.

nine. It was his father, actually, you moved, he went with him and has

:43:26.:43:30.

since picked up US citizenship and he has been amongst the best

:43:31.:43:34.

Americans from the age of 17. Exciting paddler. Needs the control

:43:35.:43:39.

and self and not get too excited by the occasion. -- needs to control

:43:40.:43:49.

himself. When you're on that podium and you know what it feels like, it

:43:50.:43:54.

is of what benefit to you. You know that you want to be there again, and

:43:55.:43:58.

you know that you have got the capability to do it. Swinging out

:43:59.:44:04.

wide between 15 and 16, Nice to put in a couple of extra strokes. Very

:44:05.:44:09.

tight going out of Gate 17. The split from Da Silva coming up, that

:44:10.:44:16.

is very respectable. If he stays clean, he might have a chance, but

:44:17.:44:23.

he was slower or 19 than we saw from the Bill zillion, Da Silva. He gets

:44:24.:44:28.

caught in the big part of the hydraulic down towards 21, 20 two.

:44:29.:44:34.

You can see all of the speed being taken away as he hit the stopper is

:44:35.:44:40.

between 20, 20 one. He will have to work very hard for the last couple

:44:41.:44:45.

of gates. Michal Smolen from the US, what is his performance like? 4.48

:44:46.:44:51.

outside. And that keeps him out of the top three. Using to fifth

:44:52.:45:07.

position for now. -- he is in to fifth position. All 21 Botes gets

:45:08.:45:11.

two runs. And we watch Hannes Aigner, he comes from Augsburg, one

:45:12.:45:19.

of the major venues for Championships and World Cups. He is

:45:20.:45:22.

the bronze medallists from London 2012. He's the only medallist in the

:45:23.:45:26.

K-1 who is here. Finding himself to tight at gate

:45:27.:45:45.

eight. He is attacking this cause, being very aggressive. Not

:45:46.:45:50.

necessarily the smoothest looking of paddlers. He is a question of how

:45:51.:45:57.

much he is using the water rather than just driving straight through

:45:58.:46:02.

it. Didn't have a good experience of the pre-Olympics, finishing last.

:46:03.:46:07.

But got it together at the European Championships, got third position.

:46:08.:46:11.

Took the bronze medal as we watch his time. .69 outside on two second

:46:12.:46:20.

is already added. So the speed is there the Aigner. Challenge to a

:46:21.:46:27.

rolling competition by a ten-year-old. The ten-year-old did

:46:28.:46:41.

25. Aigner managed 26, to save face. 88.40 eight. That keeps the

:46:42.:46:47.

Brazilians happy. That is a good, solid run from Aigner. He may come

:46:48.:46:52.

out again for the second run I get another feel for the water. He needs

:46:53.:46:56.

to eliminate those mistakes in the semifinals if he wants a place in

:46:57.:47:01.

the last ten. Semifinals will go from 15, down to ten. Now, Great

:47:02.:47:13.

Britain's hope, Joseph Clarke. Started his career with Stafford and

:47:14.:47:17.

stone. Comes from Stoke-on-Trent and then moved to Waltham to be closer

:47:18.:47:24.

to the Lee Valley course. What are his prospects, Helen? He has

:47:25.:47:29.

everything to go for. He is an exciting, dynamic paddler, one of

:47:30.:47:33.

the fastest on the circuit. He can do it, it is about keeping control.

:47:34.:47:39.

This K1 man's discipline is tight and they have to push the lines and

:47:40.:47:43.

drive through every single aspect and potentially take risks. So far

:47:44.:47:50.

he is on a great run. Was a second up on the first split. That is

:47:51.:47:55.

something he has to be careful about, did he get his whole head

:47:56.:48:01.

around the pole? I hope so. It is not disastrous, but it is not a good

:48:02.:48:11.

move from Joe Clarke. Looks like he's doing the same as David

:48:12.:48:18.

Florence, go for the timer so you don't have to come out for the

:48:19.:48:21.

second run. But the whole head wasn't under the gate. You have to

:48:22.:48:26.

have the whole head. These days we have video judges and as we speak,

:48:27.:48:30.

in a building at the back of the course, they will be looking at

:48:31.:48:35.

that. They know the British team will also be thinking about

:48:36.:48:39.

protesting and they will be looking at it and identify what happened. He

:48:40.:48:44.

doesn't think it was 50. You cannot allow, here we go... Did he get his

:48:45.:48:50.

whole head? Very tight. As he is moving up as well as turning out.

:48:51.:48:56.

Did he get the whole head under the gate? He feels he did. The judges

:48:57.:49:01.

will have it from every angle and they will have a few good looks

:49:02.:49:07.

that. It is look good Clarke, he needs to come out again. Speed but

:49:08.:49:22.

clean. Jakub Grigar now from Slovakia. He paddles whether high/

:49:23.:49:29.

great. Very slight paddler, he drives, dynamic. Here he goes, in

:49:30.:49:36.

and out of gate eight. Hot on the tail, and then lining it up so he

:49:37.:49:42.

can drive between nine and ten. He is looking good at the moment. When

:49:43.:49:46.

you CV 's guys, on a good run, it looks like there is no white water

:49:47.:49:51.

between the gates, they just dance between the poles, lifting the bout.

:49:52.:49:57.

It is all down to timing when we talk about lifting the canoe. Going

:49:58.:50:08.

into 15. Of the side, perfectly permissible. Still, the Brazilian

:50:09.:50:14.

leading. How exciting is that to see their man leading? I guess he knows

:50:15.:50:18.

the cause is better than anyone else but doesn't have the name of anyone

:50:19.:50:25.

else here. Looking fresh in this part of the course, only one more

:50:26.:50:31.

upstream gate to go. It is all about this power to the finish line. It is

:50:32.:50:41.

going to be close. Just outside. Again, the Brazilian crowd enjoying

:50:42.:50:50.

the fact that Pedro da Silva is still the number one. When they come

:50:51.:50:56.

down in order of the world ranking, Pedro De Silva went sixth. And

:50:57.:51:02.

Grigar went 16. Pedro da Silva is still the number one. But it was a

:51:03.:51:07.

tremendous run. He showed his familiarity with the course, but he

:51:08.:51:13.

still took those risks. He did, he looked silky smooth and glided down

:51:14.:51:19.

the course. He took the excitement from the crowd and put it into his

:51:20.:51:27.

paddle strokes. De Gennaro of Italy, who has replaced the world champion.

:51:28.:51:37.

Congratulations to de Gennaro for being the number one in the

:51:38.:51:39.

qualifying process for the Italian team. Also, and very strong paddler.

:51:40.:51:52.

He very tall, has a long reach. You could see the strain in his face as

:51:53.:51:59.

he wanted to get that power back out of the gate. Drives away, all about

:52:00.:52:03.

the timing. He is one of those men who performs better when it comes to

:52:04.:52:09.

the big occasions. It doesn't come any bigger than this. Down the

:52:10.:52:18.

bottom fall, as it is known. Just slides the boat under the gate. Very

:52:19.:52:24.

precise, de Gennaro, giving himself every chance of being able to relax

:52:25.:52:32.

this afternoon. 88.40 eight. He is going to beat it. He is inside. And

:52:33.:52:40.

we have a new leader. It has taken 11 men to be Pedro De Silva, but at

:52:41.:52:46.

last, de Gennaro has done it and Italy lead ahead of Brazil with New

:52:47.:52:51.

Zealand's Mike Dawson. He will be excited and that is a boost for the

:52:52.:52:57.

British team because Campbell Walsh is involved in his coaching. Superb

:52:58.:53:04.

display of canoe slalom paddling by de Gennaro. For more to go. The

:53:05.:53:10.

favourite for many is on the water now. Jiri Prskavec qualified by

:53:11.:53:29.

100th of a second. And of course he is the world champion, so it would

:53:30.:53:33.

have been a shame for him not to be here. They all seem to have sussed

:53:34.:53:39.

the fast line. Don't cut it too tight, use the flow of water. Then

:53:40.:53:45.

you get the speed in, and then you get the speed out, which takes them

:53:46.:53:49.

into the next move, which is so important. It is important to save

:53:50.:53:57.

on any energy you can for the bottom half of the course. Very tight

:53:58.:54:05.

around 17, did he touch the pole? Two second penalty. Looks like he

:54:06.:54:10.

brushed it with his tin. Better than Joe Clark, who picked up a 50 by not

:54:11.:54:19.

putting his whole head through. Joe Clark has picked up the 50 on his

:54:20.:54:24.

first run in the heat. He will have another chance in just about an

:54:25.:54:26.

hour's time. Jiri Prskavec, take away the two

:54:27.:54:49.

seconds Andy would have just been inside the Italian. I don't think

:54:50.:54:54.

there is any danger he is going out. Three more, Sebastien Combot, Peter

:54:55.:54:59.

Kauzer and Lucien Delfour. The men's K1 first run is coming to

:55:00.:55:19.

an end. Joe Clarke made an impressive debut, we will have to

:55:20.:55:23.

see if it is good enough to qualify for the semifinals, but David

:55:24.:55:34.

Florence is all but through to the semifinals in the C1. We showed you

:55:35.:55:37.

Andy Murray has gone onto Centre Court. I am very disappointed,

:55:38.:55:43.

because we taught him up when you have a whole evening over there, you

:55:44.:55:48.

have the sand, the seat and you have Andy Murray, but do you have an

:55:49.:55:51.

inflatable hands? I don't think you do. I love the way

:55:52.:55:59.

you are hiding your hand. Mine isn't quite the same size. We have a

:56:00.:56:03.

really busy afternoon and evening coming up in Rio. The local time is

:56:04.:56:08.

three p.m.. The locals are out enjoying a Sunday stroll by the sea.

:56:09.:56:14.

But from our control her Paea, we are ready to go through the next

:56:15.:56:25.

seven hours here on BBC Four. Andy Murray likes the Olympics, he won

:56:26.:56:29.

gold in London 2012 and carried the flag at the opening ceremony on

:56:30.:56:35.

Friday night. He made sure to carry the flag in his left hand to keep

:56:36.:56:40.

his right-hand fresh. We will bring you date on Great Britain's progress

:56:41.:56:47.

in the eventing. They took bronze medal in the team event in 2012. In

:56:48.:56:57.

table tennis, the men's singles. We will show you that later. Can Great

:56:58.:57:04.

Britain's men bounce back from yesterday's disappointing loss to

:57:05.:57:08.

the Belgians? We will be live from the Hockey Centre as they take on

:57:09.:57:13.

New Zealand. Later, we will be just down the beach at the volleyball

:57:14.:57:17.

where it is fair to say things will be rocking. Here is a lot at how you

:57:18.:57:28.

can plan your evening with our timetable. Tennis is next to the

:57:29.:57:32.

Andy Murray in action as he begins the defence of his Olympic title

:57:33.:57:36.

against Viktor Troicki ski. We have the eventing to bring you up today

:57:37.:57:43.

on Great Britain's progress in the dressage.

:57:44.:58:08.

Richard Kruse in the fencing is a bit earlier than that. Then you'll

:58:09.:58:16.

have to dig deep before three a.m., Adam Peaty goes for gold in the 100

:58:17.:58:24.

metre breaststroke. Let's show you what is happening around the Olympic

:58:25.:58:27.

venues at the moment. On the Red Button you can follow the women's

:58:28.:58:34.

Road race. We are into the final stages, as things stand. On the

:58:35.:58:37.

website you can follow the action at the dressage at the equestrian

:58:38.:58:47.

centre. And we will bring new action from the artistic gymnastics as

:58:48.:58:52.

well. You can follow those on the website and the women's Road race

:58:53.:58:57.

cycling on the Red Button. You can add 24 hours live stream on the BBC

:58:58.:59:07.

sport website. There is a full event schedule, to see what is on. It is

:59:08.:59:14.

time to head the Olympic Tennis Centre, which is about 30 miles west

:59:15.:59:19.

of where we are to find out what is happening in the tennis. Andy Murray

:59:20.:59:22.

of course back in action to defend the Olympic crown.

:59:23.:59:33.

These are the Brits playing today. Andy Murray has a busy day because

:59:34.:59:45.

he will partner with his brother Jamie later on. They will take on

:59:46.:59:57.

the Brazilians. Troicky, will be a name you remember from Wimbledon

:59:58.:00:00.

because he rivalled John McEnroe with his actions over a decision

:00:01.:00:06.

from the

:00:07.:00:08.
