This is good afternoon, we have already been on BBC Two earlier

:00:20.:00:26.

today. We have hopped onto BBC One for the continuation of day three of

:00:27.:00:30.

Rio's 28 Olympic Games and we are very much back in the saddle today.

:00:31.:00:36.

One of the real highlight of any Games, the three-day event

:00:37.:00:37.

cross-country section. We have seen a brutal cycling road

:00:38.:00:51.

race and the cross-country course is just as big and meaty and

:00:52.:00:55.

challenging. We go live to that very soon. We are in the boxing as well.

:00:56.:01:05.

Delayed but not forgotten, Helen Glover and Heather Stanning go into

:01:06.:01:13.

women's pair. Unbeaten for five years. That's just mark the card

:01:14.:01:16.

about some of the key standout moments you might want to factor

:01:17.:01:20.

into your day today and there are many. We have Tom Daley, one of the

:01:21.:01:25.

stars of the British team in action with Dan Goodfellow in the

:01:26.:01:28.

qualifying for the ten metres synchronised and that is of the big

:01:29.:01:33.

platform. Some great views and we are all in all of their skills.

:01:34.:01:39.

Gymnastics, the men's team. Trying to upgrade from bronze in London.

:01:40.:01:45.

The women's final and semis in the rugby sevens. Great Britain have an

:01:46.:01:51.

important match against New Zealand. The shooting, the men's trap. And

:01:52.:01:58.

this evening, although we hours of this morning, James Guy just made it

:01:59.:02:04.

to the 200 metres freestyle final. By .01 of a second. He is the

:02:05.:02:09.

reigning world champion in that. In the women's breaststroke, the

:02:10.:02:16.

Lithuanian swimmer, it will be hard for her to hang on to the title she

:02:17.:02:25.

earned four years ago. This is William Fox-Pitt's fourth Olympic

:02:26.:02:28.

Games and he has a lot of hard work to show for his efforts, two silvers

:02:29.:02:34.

and a bronze. They have all come in the team event. He has never won an

:02:35.:02:38.

individual medal but as we go through into the second element of

:02:39.:02:43.

the three-day event, he leads the standings in the individual account.

:02:44.:02:48.

That is great news and even more remarkable when you consider only

:02:49.:02:51.

ten months ago, he had a very serious fall and was in an induced

:02:52.:02:58.

coma with a serious head injury. On his comeback trail, he was only

:02:59.:03:02.

allowed to drive a car four months ago and now he is steering his great

:03:03.:03:11.

friend, Chilli Morning in this Olympic Games.

:03:12.:03:18.

The cheers ringing around this Greenwich park. William Fox-Pitt

:03:19.:03:27.

making steady progress. In October, he was in a coma after falling at

:03:28.:03:32.

the Championships. When you had the fall, at what stage did you become

:03:33.:03:37.

aware of what had happened? I think the whole time I was in France, I

:03:38.:03:42.

was there for a couple of weeks, I have no recollection of being there.

:03:43.:03:45.

I wasn't allowed home to begin with because they wanted to check I was

:03:46.:03:49.

safe. I can remember being angry that I wasn't allowed there and I

:03:50.:03:55.

think all the tests I did, to pass, it was really important to me and

:03:56.:03:59.

when I got back home and I was with my children, that was a big deal.

:04:00.:04:06.

Has your wife be 100% behind the drive to get to Rio? She seems to

:04:07.:04:10.

have known how important it is to you. She has been very supportive of

:04:11.:04:15.

me. In the beginning, we all wondered, why carry on? I have been

:04:16.:04:22.

doing it for years and I have had fine and been lucky so what was it

:04:23.:04:27.

for? The whole Rio thing was part of my rehab and it got me back in the

:04:28.:04:32.

saddle again. It got me pushing for it. Physically, there is nothing

:04:33.:04:38.

different about you. I am skinnier! And you are tall as ever! Do you

:04:39.:04:43.

think you are there in your own head? I really do. If I look back, I

:04:44.:04:52.

thought, I have ages until the Olympics and then suddenly in July,

:04:53.:05:01.

I am thinking, my goodness, I feel great and Chilli Morning feels great

:05:02.:05:06.

and we are ready. This is Chilli Morning. A bit of a superstar. Why

:05:07.:05:14.

do you think he is almost the perfect event horse? Here's a

:05:15.:05:18.

special all-rounder. Eventing is three disciplines and he can nail

:05:19.:05:24.

all three. So often top horses have a weak discipline. He is fun to

:05:25.:05:28.

ride. This could potentially be his last ever event, he is 16 years old,

:05:29.:05:35.

he owes us nothing. Rio could be it, couldn't it? He has it all to look

:05:36.:05:45.

forward to. With his wives! That partnership with him seems to be

:05:46.:05:49.

crucial, you two know each other so well. I am so lucky. I've had him

:05:50.:05:55.

since he was 12 and he is now 16 so he has been a great part of my life.

:05:56.:06:00.

Really given me great confidence to get back and riding again because in

:06:01.:06:04.

the beginning, obviously, I didn't want to fall off. He rather took me

:06:05.:06:09.

on board as a bit of a geriatric and was very gentle with me. I think he

:06:10.:06:15.

knew I was a bit erratic and dumping him was a little bit hit and miss

:06:16.:06:19.

and he didn't care at all, he just said, come with me. He likes

:06:20.:06:25.

attention. He really likes people and he likes being petted and loved.

:06:26.:06:33.

He is not at all irritable. It would be the fairy tale ending to the

:06:34.:06:37.

Hollywood film if you come back from a serious brain injury and you win

:06:38.:06:42.

gold. Wouldn't it just? That is not even on my mind. I am running a very

:06:43.:06:48.

good horse and I know if I ride him well and don't let him down, I could

:06:49.:06:49.

be up there. Since my accident, it has hit home

:06:50.:07:02.

that every day, you are lucky and I have been. I have been so lucky.

:07:03.:07:09.

Yes, France was unlucky but coming back has been very lucky. The fact

:07:10.:07:14.

he is good, I am here, we are going to Rio in a few days. It is a real

:07:15.:07:20.

dream and we are very lucky and any medals and anything else is a bonus.

:07:21.:07:24.

It is not at all expected but we will have a good go. STUDIO: An

:07:25.:07:32.

amazing story and on the comeback trail, he came back in March in

:07:33.:07:36.

serious competition. The selectors said they'd know they would like to

:07:37.:07:40.

take Chilli Morning, he said, it was a question of whether they wanted

:07:41.:07:47.

him! Great Britain in fourth place coming into today's cross-country

:07:48.:07:52.

section. The travelling reserve, Tina Cook, says it is that toughest

:07:53.:08:02.

course she has seen so far. Ian Stark of Great Britain, four tie

:08:03.:08:06.

medallist in this eventing discipline and he knows exactly what

:08:07.:08:10.

days like this are all about. This is his story, the man who will be

:08:11.:08:11.

commentating on today's events. I started riding when I was about

:08:12.:08:23.

ten and there was a kid about the same age as me who led me on this

:08:24.:08:28.

pony up and down the drive, shouting, up, down, rising trot.

:08:29.:08:33.

They let you loose going along the border hills for an hour on the

:08:34.:08:36.

horse and it was a bit intimidating and scary but I was hooked from then

:08:37.:08:40.

on because I quite liked being scared.

:08:41.:08:47.

After that, I spent every possible minute I could at the riding school.

:08:48.:08:55.

We didn't really have the money to pay for lots and lots of lessons so

:08:56.:08:59.

what I did was, if I hang around long enough and did a lot of work at

:09:00.:09:05.

the stables, we got to ride bareback at the end of the day and put the

:09:06.:09:09.

horses out on the field, about a mile away from the stables. When the

:09:10.:09:14.

stables owner was away for a day, a group of us used to make head

:09:15.:09:17.

collars out of string and go and catch the ponies in the field and

:09:18.:09:20.

have races up the field they're back. That was my introduction to

:09:21.:09:26.

riding. It probably made me hungry, but it wasn't handed me on a plate.

:09:27.:09:31.

I had to work hard for it. I loved getting onto horses and making them

:09:32.:09:35.

go better. I seemed to have a knack for it. Fanny was one of the first

:09:36.:09:42.

person that ever sent me a horse to compete and ride and it was quite a

:09:43.:09:49.

long time ago. Over 40 years! Maybe we shouldn't talk about it! You can

:09:50.:09:53.

see it in somebody, either you have it or you don't and he had it from

:09:54.:09:59.

the word go. This balance and he was very bold, that is the other thing.

:10:00.:10:07.

It is really hard to explain. Being visited riding anyone and

:10:08.:10:10.

everybody's horses and some day, you are part of the Olympics, in the

:10:11.:10:14.

British team. Does it get any better? Beautiful stride through

:10:15.:10:23.

there, go on, in. That is a remarkably good effort from Ian

:10:24.:10:29.

Stark. That was the first one. Los Angeles. Getting myself a medal and

:10:30.:10:32.

standing on the podium was incredible. I think probably there

:10:33.:10:38.

were a few tears shed but it was one of the proudest moments of my life.

:10:39.:10:44.

This is a well-deserved medal in deed for the flying Scotsman

:10:45.:10:49.

himself, Ian Stark. My kids were there. Since the Olympic medals

:10:50.:10:57.

after 88. Amazing, I don't know where time goes. These are my

:10:58.:11:03.

grandchildren. Do you want to come and sit up here? No? I still, even

:11:04.:11:09.

now, I still have to pinch myself and think about what my life and

:11:10.:11:16.

career has been. Where I started, humble beginnings, and how

:11:17.:11:22.

incredibly lucky I have been. I could get quite emotional actually.

:11:23.:11:32.

STUDIO: If that doesn't inspire you, I don't know what will. Having to

:11:33.:11:40.

think back on his career. Ian will be commentating today. These are the

:11:41.:11:45.

standings in individual as we come into. -- in the team, I beg your

:11:46.:11:52.

pardon. Germany has Michael Jung, also the individual defending

:11:53.:11:57.

champion as well. Ingrid Klimke in there as well.

:11:58.:12:20.

Michael Jung won eventing Grand Slam last year. Let's head over to the

:12:21.:12:31.

Deodoro Equestrian Centre. This is the track, the cross-country course,

:12:32.:12:36.

a big, meaty track, a real challenge for horse and rider. They will have

:12:37.:12:40.

to ride with their heads and know all the routes. It could be quite a

:12:41.:12:45.

tactical affair. This is a proper test today. Ian Stark and Mike

:12:46.:12:55.

Tucker. Welcome to the Deodoro. The build up getting under way for the

:12:56.:13:01.

cross-country. The feature part of this multi-equestrian discipline. It

:13:02.:13:07.

is so tight and so exciting. They have been walking in from all parts

:13:08.:13:12.

of Rio to this military site where the cross-country is laid out. 5840

:13:13.:13:18.

metres. The stage set for a really

:13:19.:13:32.

fascinating test. A stiff cross-country test but time and

:13:33.:13:37.

jumping penalties will be very significant and all the scores. Very

:13:38.:13:41.

close, the Olympic champion just has a narrow lead, Ian, but very close

:13:42.:13:46.

and still in a very good position. Yes, I think Britain is in a good

:13:47.:13:51.

position. It is close. Very few penalty points between the top

:13:52.:13:57.

teams. It is under pressure. They are only 0.2 ahead of the second

:13:58.:14:04.

team out there. Frantz. They certainly have a lot to live up to,

:14:05.:14:10.

the Germans. Normally, you get to cross-country day and the Germans

:14:11.:14:13.

have a strong lead but this is not the case this time. A couple of

:14:14.:14:18.

seconds over the clock is going to change things big-time. All the 12

:14:19.:14:27.

top nations have got a very experienced lead rider and the first

:14:28.:14:30.

of them, literally being called into the start box at this very moment.

:14:31.:14:37.

It is the rider from Canada, Jessica Phoenix. She was 22nd in London, the

:14:38.:14:43.

only Canadian competitor to compete. She has been a Pan-American

:14:44.:14:44.

champion. The Canadian at the moment 12th

:14:45.:15:02.

place in the team, and Jessica is getting going. The venue is looking

:15:03.:15:08.

superb, you can see the colours as she stretches away. Uphill for the

:15:09.:15:16.

first half a mile. Years, it is a nice uphill, and then they come

:15:17.:15:23.

around the corner to this upright wall. It is this arch. Not hugely

:15:24.:15:31.

well-defined, but Jessica makes nothing of that. And then continuing

:15:32.:15:39.

up to the big picnic table. Big, wide fence. An uphill approach,

:15:40.:15:45.

which makes this easier for the horses and riders. Then they come

:15:46.:15:50.

around this 360 Degrees Circle. They are turning back to the first water

:15:51.:15:56.

complex and they have a choice of routes, and the direct route is over

:15:57.:16:01.

this table and then they drop into the water.

:16:02.:16:08.

She's changed her mind, she turned to quickly into the water so she

:16:09.:16:18.

couldn't get the angle. Did she get a penalty? Looked close to me but

:16:19.:16:22.

she is through the water anyway, the jumping was OK, and then the gallop

:16:23.:16:29.

up the hill. And then there is a triple bar. Then there is a downhill

:16:30.:16:40.

approach. I think you get from the pictures the feeling of and

:16:41.:16:44.

relations, and these undulations are pretty serious. With the

:16:45.:16:52.

undulations, this is going to be a test of energy and fitness. Jessica

:16:53.:16:57.

Phoenix has shown her intentions to get on with the job. I thought it

:16:58.:17:05.

was a big fence, she had a look at it, hesitated, and now the first

:17:06.:17:12.

serious combination on the course. It is a very tight line. But, in

:17:13.:17:20.

fact, she's going the long route, so she's got to do the brush fence,

:17:21.:17:25.

turn back to the second brush fence, back up the hill and then turn again

:17:26.:17:30.

to continue on her route, so quite a number of seconds longer. And there

:17:31.:17:36.

is a lot of those eye of the needle accuracy fences. There are lots of

:17:37.:17:41.

them where the alternatives do add time to your score. The Australian

:17:42.:17:53.

manager, very experienced, he will know the game back to front, and he

:17:54.:17:59.

will have given Jessica some instructions. Oh, she called the

:18:00.:18:04.

fence. Stood off too far, and that is just a moment where the horse

:18:05.:18:10.

will test his confidence. Yes, looked very hesitant and didn't

:18:11.:18:13.

really want to know. It isn't as big as the ditch in Birley, but it is a

:18:14.:18:21.

downhill approach. Then they come to the quarry combination. They need to

:18:22.:18:28.

be confident here. Down, then back up. Well, that skinny fence, that

:18:29.:18:40.

final element, we reckon was in three strides. And Jessica gets five

:18:41.:18:46.

strides in there, so that ditch and brush really probably cause the

:18:47.:18:49.

horse to be wary, and Jessica to be cautious. And then this beautiful

:18:50.:18:54.

bamboo tea dig-mac keyhole. The course just settling down to a

:18:55.:19:14.

rhythm. Set off at a cracking pace but now a better pace. Again, she's

:19:15.:19:21.

taking the long route of this combination. She should be for

:19:22.:19:28.

minutes at this mark. Out of the ten minute 15 of the cross country, but

:19:29.:19:33.

she's already she's taking two very long and time-consuming roots, so I

:19:34.:19:37.

should think she is way down on the clock at this stage. The first rider

:19:38.:19:42.

to go for any team, their job is to go out there, find out how the

:19:43.:19:46.

courses riding, and come back and give the riders lots of information.

:19:47.:19:50.

And then they can make the decision whether they want to go faster, if

:19:51.:19:55.

the horses are managing the distance, and take some more direct

:19:56.:20:00.

lines. It is much cooler here today, the low 20s at the moment,

:20:01.:20:05.

temperature wise. But a lot more humidity. I've been walking the

:20:06.:20:09.

course and it was quite sweaty out there. She gets three strides

:20:10.:20:16.

through these log piles. Massive widespread on these fences and quite

:20:17.:20:21.

narrow tops to jump. Then they do another circle and back to the log

:20:22.:20:28.

pile. And then approaching the second of four water complexes. The

:20:29.:20:35.

French are one of the favourites, and it is Astier Nicolas, the play

:20:36.:20:44.

seven-year-old, who won the big championships in France last year,

:20:45.:20:48.

he got France off to a great start in dressage. France at the moment

:20:49.:20:55.

are in second place in the team. So, I think this will... We have some

:20:56.:21:04.

good names in the early stages. He goes direct and jumps it

:21:05.:21:10.

beautifully. More control. I think very much Astier Nicolas is a fast

:21:11.:21:14.

riser in the cross-country and the French team are sending him out to

:21:15.:21:18.

find out about the direct routes, so I wouldn't expect to see him taking

:21:19.:21:23.

many of the alternatives but it will be interesting because these two

:21:24.:21:27.

brush corners, the line looks as though it isn't fair and the riders

:21:28.:21:33.

have to decide whether they go straight or take the slight bending

:21:34.:21:39.

line. Beautiful jump, that is a big fence. You can see what drop the

:21:40.:21:44.

landing is. Running down it is up and down, it isn't massive hills but

:21:45.:21:48.

just the constant change of terrain is going to be quite influential on

:21:49.:21:53.

the horses by the end of the course. Much more measured start by Astier

:21:54.:22:00.

Nicolas compared to Jessica Phoenix, and will he go straight? This will

:22:01.:22:06.

be interesting. This is the difficult one! He gets a bending

:22:07.:22:12.

line but it looks chancy. It was a mess, he got there in four, and the

:22:13.:22:16.

horse helped out because it could have been another strike before that

:22:17.:22:21.

second corner. You can see how twisty it was. Not an easy line. We

:22:22.:22:27.

will see many more taking Jessica's route. Back with Jessica Phoenix.

:22:28.:22:35.

Big lock to these narrow fences, two of them. Did she get it? I think she

:22:36.:22:39.

might have got inside the flag there. Very close, though, and the

:22:40.:22:45.

judges will be looking at that. They have picture replays to check. It is

:22:46.:22:50.

a difficult one to assess. She got four strides down the hill. It

:22:51.:22:54.

should have been three and three. And she got four and four. The horse

:22:55.:23:00.

did stay inside the flags. But another near miss there. How many of

:23:01.:23:05.

those can you get away with on this course? Jessica's horse, A Little

:23:06.:23:14.

Romance, a short striding horse, so adding these strides in the

:23:15.:23:19.

combinations isn't going to help the other competitors watching. You can

:23:20.:23:24.

see fence 22, she's jumping out of the 33, coming on to one of the

:23:25.:23:29.

feature fences, there is a direct route which can save a lot of time.

:23:30.:23:35.

It's caused a lot of discussion. It is jumping across the corner of the

:23:36.:23:39.

house, and then a sharp turn, jumping on an angle. She has run

:23:40.:23:47.

past. That is a penalty. She will now go around, and like so many of

:23:48.:23:51.

these fences, probably ten seconds, I would guess. And the rest, I would

:23:52.:23:58.

think. What was interesting is the corner over the cottage is pointing

:23:59.:24:04.

left, very much a run out left, and Jessica had her whip in her right

:24:05.:24:08.

hand, she didn't have the whip in the right hand, so she's had one or

:24:09.:24:14.

two near misses. Why try that very difficult line when she's gone so

:24:15.:24:17.

many longer routes and had a couple of hiccups? I find that a strange

:24:18.:24:23.

decision from the rider's part. Now for Ireland, their first rider,

:24:24.:24:28.

Padraig McCarthy, with a very well-known horse, Simon Porloe. At

:24:29.:24:35.

the moment, young Padraig McCarthy has done a tremendous job in the

:24:36.:24:40.

dressage. Ireland are right up there, lying fifth in the team, and

:24:41.:24:47.

he got 48. This is a man who has trained with some of the top names

:24:48.:24:51.

in show-jumping. He took up preventing a few years ago. --

:24:52.:25:02.

eventing. Jessica Phoenix, that is a letup thence, the bamboo log. It

:25:03.:25:10.

gives them a bit of a breather, but of a confidence boost as they come

:25:11.:25:15.

up the hill towards the fruit wagon and then this final water. The final

:25:16.:25:25.

water again, a technical line. The fruit wagon looks like it has come

:25:26.:25:31.

out of London. It does. The time is interesting because already over the

:25:32.:25:35.

time is Jessica Phoenix, not all that surprising but she's quite lot

:25:36.:25:39.

over the time. A lot of time penalties as well as jumping

:25:40.:25:43.

penalties. We look at Astier Nicolas at fence 17. A test of accuracy, and

:25:44.:25:49.

Astier Nicolas passes it with flying colours. He took the flag at, that

:25:50.:25:54.

was to be expected, he was on the right side of the flag. We have two

:25:55.:26:01.

of the most brilliant up-and-coming riders in our sport, and these two

:26:02.:26:06.

will be the ones the rest of the riders will be watching back at base

:26:07.:26:10.

camp. They want to get a feel for this course. This man has written a

:26:11.:26:17.

lovely rhythm. You might not be going as fast as Jessica was at some

:26:18.:26:21.

stage but it is very measured, and that will be good because he will be

:26:22.:26:27.

saving energy. A lovely balance. Most of the approaches, he doesn't

:26:28.:26:35.

miss too much time. Now that real test... Doesn't he jump it well?

:26:36.:26:41.

Brilliant, fantastic. He isn't going as fast as Jessica, but he has a

:26:42.:26:46.

great rhythm. Astier Nicolas in the past has been criticised in past for

:26:47.:26:52.

going fast. Jessica Phoenix has jumped the last and completed so we

:26:53.:26:56.

will get her time. She could be more than a minute over, she was more

:26:57.:27:01.

than 30 seconds some 400 metres from home at least. Dressage, 52. 55.6,

:27:02.:27:11.

our estimate, would be the time penalties added, and that is a lot.

:27:12.:27:17.

It is a huge amount. As we've said, it is a short striding horse, A

:27:18.:27:25.

Little Romance, and they took the time consuming routes, so it isn't

:27:26.:27:28.

an ideal one to get a plan from. Padraig McCarthy and Simon Porloe

:27:29.:27:37.

coming down to the keyhole. Padraig McCarthy was part of the Irish team

:27:38.:27:42.

in the Europeans last year. He had a fall at the fence in the arena which

:27:43.:27:46.

took him out of the equation for Ireland. He would have learned from

:27:47.:27:50.

that, and this is a very capable horse. His late father-in-law, and

:27:51.:27:59.

by him, and owned by the Perkins'. Lucy, his wife, road this horse in

:28:00.:28:05.

Malmo in 2013. That's a bit of a surprise. Going the direct route and

:28:06.:28:11.

that is a penalty. That was interesting because I felt that he

:28:12.:28:17.

deliberately jumped up slowly to get four strides. Not quite sure where

:28:18.:28:25.

he's going now. Going around to do the alternative. He is taking the

:28:26.:28:35.

direct fences. That will be expensive. There's that refusal for

:28:36.:28:41.

20 penalties. The clock is ticking away. I felt it was a three stride

:28:42.:28:49.

up that step to those angled brushes and one striding between them. By

:28:50.:28:53.

adding that half stride, it didn't work. Away goes Luca Roman. Two

:28:54.:29:04.

brothers in the Italian team, Pietro Roman and Luca Roman. They are both

:29:05.:29:08.

very talented. Their father wrote in Moscow. Astier Nicolas, meanwhile,

:29:09.:29:19.

now well on course. Still clear. At the last corner. This has been a

:29:20.:29:26.

quick round. Oh, this man has written a peach of a ride. He has

:29:27.:29:32.

indeed. The horses looking weary but he is still going and still jumping.

:29:33.:29:40.

That was interesting, that frog. Those great big shrubs put the side

:29:41.:29:44.

which helped with horses. And that table he's jumped, and the top of

:29:45.:29:48.

the hill at the end of the course and it is a massive spread. The

:29:49.:29:53.

horse is still galloping, got his is pricked, and one to go. Look at the

:29:54.:29:58.

time! Fantastic! Is he going to make it? He's pushing, he knows it's

:29:59.:30:03.

going to be close. Can he get there? I think he will. And he's made it!

:30:04.:30:10.

Fantastic! That will bring a very happy picture to the French camp and

:30:11.:30:14.

a lot of smiles to a lot of faces on the rest of the riders because this

:30:15.:30:17.

is a tough track. Surprised you might see more

:30:18.:30:28.

problems as the day goes on. Not everyone is going to do that. You

:30:29.:30:32.

are right, but it is possible and that has put the pressure on for the

:30:33.:30:36.

rest. Because they know they have to go the direct routes to get inside

:30:37.:30:41.

the time and France already have one man. Back with Ireland's Padraig

:30:42.:30:51.

McCarthy. Oh dear, oh dear. Down they go. That under the modern

:30:52.:30:58.

rules, a horse and rider falls, it means elimination. Big

:30:59.:31:06.

disappointment for Padraig McCarthy. There were five strides in there and

:31:07.:31:09.

a little bit like the combination earlier. He got an extra stride and

:31:10.:31:14.

the halls hesitated and really didn't have the impulsion to get

:31:15.:31:20.

over that. Caught the back of the corner and sadly that is the end of

:31:21.:31:24.

the competition for Padraig McCarthy and Simon Paula. Good to see the

:31:25.:31:31.

horse and rider on their feet. They have the wonderful facilities here.

:31:32.:31:37.

All the top facilities for both medical and veterinary. Not only a

:31:38.:31:42.

wonderful set of surgeons here but also a great cooling facility as

:31:43.:31:49.

well. The facilities here are incredible and the riders have been

:31:50.:32:02.

very impressed from day one. The facilities are almost perfect and it

:32:03.:32:08.

is good to see Simon Porloe with his ears pricked walking away. Luca

:32:09.:32:19.

Roman road last year, he has had one individual gold as well as the team

:32:20.:32:23.

silver in Moscow in 1980. A very talented family. Very boldly through

:32:24.:32:30.

there. But very well. He did it easy. Their father is a very good

:32:31.:32:41.

trainer. It was interesting, he took a stride less than I expected. I was

:32:42.:32:46.

concerned that if the riders were not quite as open as that, they

:32:47.:32:52.

wouldn't get the distance. He made it look pretty straightforward, did

:32:53.:32:58.

Luca. The first away on the course for Australia. A combination known

:32:59.:33:06.

so very well at home. Sam Griffiths with Paulank Brockagh. A great start

:33:07.:33:16.

on a score of 46.3. They were in 20 Second Place themselves. Australia

:33:17.:33:24.

did well in the dressage. As you can see already, there will be a big

:33:25.:33:30.

change in the marks. 26 marks I think between the top 12. I think

:33:31.:33:35.

you will find that multiplied by quite a big number by the time we

:33:36.:33:42.

finished today. Luca Roman having a good ride, very positive throughout

:33:43.:33:48.

the course up to this point. And the horse is certainly full of running.

:33:49.:33:55.

Making nothing of these big spreads. It is quite a nice turn into those

:33:56.:34:01.

big turns, they are narrow and skinny fences and there is a nice

:34:02.:34:07.

turn in to set the horses up well. There is a bit of work for the

:34:08.:34:14.

riders. Quite a crowd building up in this ideal facility for the sport, I

:34:15.:34:18.

must say, they have done a tremendous job.

:34:19.:34:28.

I am very impressed with the rhythm of this combination. Luca looking

:34:29.:34:43.

very settled and not wasting any time setting the horse up, just

:34:44.:34:47.

keeping a good pace and rhythm. Not hustling the horse, saving the

:34:48.:34:52.

precious bits of energy for the end of the course. Certainly, a most

:34:53.:35:01.

interesting start. We can see the course can be jumped very perfectly,

:35:02.:35:06.

was beautifully done by Astier Nicolas. She also had some problems.

:35:07.:35:14.

Up at 17 now and he hits it but he sits tight. Well done. Pays the

:35:15.:35:20.

penalty, cannot get back. A decent approach. That is a 20 penalty for

:35:21.:35:26.

the refusal. There was no stride there. The first time I have seen

:35:27.:35:31.

him lose his rhythm. The horse was far too close to it and the horse

:35:32.:35:35.

caught the fence and he was probably not wise to try this. There is an

:35:36.:35:41.

alternative to the B element and he could have bypassed that corner and

:35:42.:35:44.

I think you might be kicking himself later for not doing that. It was a

:35:45.:35:49.

good save when the horse hit the fence. Lost his stirrups and

:35:50.:35:53.

balanced but carried on like an Olympian. One more straightforward

:35:54.:36:02.

fence just to get back into the rhythm again before he takes on the

:36:03.:36:07.

ski jump. The ski jump coming on at 19 and 20. This is again goes two

:36:08.:36:17.

very narrow fence systems, following the first element. Very good. He

:36:18.:36:32.

kept better rhythm again. Just for a moment, he had lost the rhythm and

:36:33.:36:35.

he was a little backwards through his fences but he was back into that

:36:36.:36:43.

forward flow. We are with Italian Luca Roman. 30 years old. Plenty of

:36:44.:36:54.

jumping penalties on his card at the moment. He was having such a good

:36:55.:37:03.

ride. Sometimes, if things are going well, you wonder why it is going so

:37:04.:37:07.

well and you can may be out yourself and I wonder if he got to those

:37:08.:37:12.

rails and decided to interfere a little bit more. For those at home,

:37:13.:37:18.

Gemma Tattersall will be the next out of the start box. Britain's

:37:19.:37:22.

first, Gemma Tattersall, next away. We are awaiting news from Sam

:37:23.:37:28.

Griffiths out on the course for Australia. Still with the Italian

:37:29.:37:38.

Luca Roman. And he is taking the long route here and we haven't seen

:37:39.:37:44.

many people try this. Four strides and turn to this very vertical gate.

:37:45.:37:49.

Quite a tough line and sensibly he took the long route. They have added

:37:50.:37:53.

some flowers in front of that gate. Gemma away. With quick look at the

:37:54.:38:06.

fifth. -- Quicklook V. She has every chance of getting on the leaderboard

:38:07.:38:08.

if she can get clear inside the time. Three scores to count and this

:38:09.:38:15.

is the first of the four to go and she is away. She was a little

:38:16.:38:22.

frustrated about her test, both very capable of getting a lot better

:38:23.:38:27.

result than that. But she is a great, tough competitor

:38:28.:38:32.

cross-country. I would expect to see Gemma going most of those direct

:38:33.:38:38.

routes. Sam Griffiths and Paulank Brockagh, head down, he rode in

:38:39.:38:42.

London and slipped up so frustratingly. He needs to put it

:38:43.:38:46.

right this time. The Australians have come here full of confidence.

:38:47.:38:52.

That was a good shot at the first. And that is the way you should do

:38:53.:38:58.

it. He gets a good five. Paulank Brockagh has already won Babington,

:38:59.:39:11.

we know it is capable cross-country. Touchdown, one of the great

:39:12.:39:13.

show-jumping sires of recent times in Ireland. Looking determined.

:39:14.:39:20.

Another one to keep a good rhythm going. Wasted no time at that big

:39:21.:39:29.

table. It lives across the slope of the hill. Gemma Tattersall at the

:39:30.:39:32.

first water. That will be a stop. That will be 20

:39:33.:39:41.

penalties. A bit disappointing really. She was

:39:42.:39:57.

very bold on her way into the water and I thought she had a good line.

:39:58.:40:02.

She was on the left side of the log should have been able to turn but

:40:03.:40:07.

wasn't quite able to do it, landed steep into the water and suddenly it

:40:08.:40:11.

became an extra stride instead of the four, it became five. It just

:40:12.:40:17.

didn't happen. We are back with Italy's Luca Roman. He got 20

:40:18.:40:24.

penalties on his card. He is over the last and has completed Andy has

:40:25.:40:29.

some 50 time penalties, well over a minute and 15 seconds, so over the

:40:30.:40:38.

optimum time of ten minutes 15. Luca Roman, 71.6, he has got on the

:40:39.:40:47.

cross-country course as penalties. Sam Griffiths of Australia. Another

:40:48.:40:54.

one to go the long route. At this cottage and gate. I think we will

:40:55.:40:59.

see more and more riders doing that. The British team were contemplating

:41:00.:41:02.

going the longer route because they felt it would take very little time

:41:03.:41:06.

to go the long route and much, much safer. Interesting to know whether

:41:07.:41:13.

Astier Nicolas went that straight route. He is the only one so far and

:41:14.:41:20.

it is still very early days in the 64 runners. We have had one fallen

:41:21.:41:24.

overnight and the Russian competitors, only three Russians

:41:25.:41:29.

here. Sam Griffiths still clear for Australia. Did a great job at that

:41:30.:41:33.

water. It is a big drop in and then they come up at quite a scene with

:41:34.:41:37.

angle to the vertical rail at the top and Sam made it look much easier

:41:38.:41:46.

than it actually is. Waiting at the start of the first for the Dutch.

:41:47.:41:54.

This is Theo van de Vendel with Zindane.

:41:55.:42:10.

He is certainly meaning business out of the first fence. Almost going too

:42:11.:42:17.

fast, wants to make sure he has energy at the end of the track. We

:42:18.:42:24.

are back with Gemma and that is the second refusal. Things not going

:42:25.:42:29.

well for Britain's first rider Gemma Tattersall. Not looking in

:42:30.:42:32.

altogether a mood where she wants to be helpful. That is another 20

:42:33.:42:40.

penalties and actually, if she picks up another refusal on the course,

:42:41.:42:46.

she will be eliminated for a cumulative refusals. That would be

:42:47.:42:53.

very bad news for Britain. The horse both times didn't want to turn

:42:54.:42:58.

right. Sam Griffiths at the last water. I wonder what his time is.

:42:59.:43:05.

Now this frog... Gets it. There was a little bit of discussion about the

:43:06.:43:11.

actual defining of that fence. They repainted it. There was a good bit

:43:12.:43:16.

of riding thereby Sam. Actor Gemma and a quick -- and Quicklook V. --

:43:17.:43:28.

back to Gemma and Quicklook V. Beautifully jumped. Those two log

:43:29.:43:37.

piles. Best we have seen today. 11-year-old mare. Some very good

:43:38.:43:42.

performances. Sam Griffiths coming for home. One more. Be interesting

:43:43.:43:54.

to pick up the time. One inside so far. Astier Nicolas. Getting in with

:43:55.:43:59.

about three or four seconds to spare. Has Sam Griffiths done that?

:44:00.:44:08.

I would suspect not but we will see. 6.8 time penalties. I think that is

:44:09.:44:17.

perfectly feasible. Astier Nicolas really showed, he went all the

:44:18.:44:20.

direct routes and it really did hit a great rhythm. Brilliant for Sam,

:44:21.:44:26.

after the disappointment of London, he has had a great ride

:44:27.:44:29.

cross-country. Always pretty in courage and for the Australian team.

:44:30.:44:34.

Things are looking good for Australia. One good thing for

:44:35.:44:39.

Britain is that the three dressage scores that you would hope, came out

:44:40.:44:45.

very even, Britain scoring more in the 40s.

:44:46.:44:52.

It's not the end of the day yet. Gemma attack 17 and makes it look

:44:53.:45:02.

easy now. She's already got two individual refusals on course. I'm

:45:03.:45:09.

not sure whether he intended to do that but it was very quick and very

:45:10.:45:16.

clever. He jumped so much right-to-left over the first quarry,

:45:17.:45:20.

he couldn't get back to the second one. He wasted very little time,

:45:21.:45:24.

which might be a route more and more taking. So, here you see, he hasn't

:45:25.:45:33.

come straight but across to make this corner easier. It's a massive

:45:34.:45:40.

jump, but it would have to be much more to the right to get lined up

:45:41.:45:45.

for the second corner. His eyes on the second corner, and then he turns

:45:46.:45:54.

away. Again, you get the picture of this rolling terrain as we rejoin

:45:55.:46:02.

Gemma Tattersall and the ski jump. She can't have another refusal,

:46:03.:46:05.

which is a sensible decision because she'd want to get home. The clock is

:46:06.:46:11.

ticking by. She takes the alternative. And she had to be very

:46:12.:46:16.

careful there knocked her tracks. She got away with it, that is a good

:46:17.:46:25.

decision. If she had made the mistake and crossed her tracks, that

:46:26.:46:29.

would have been a technical refusal, so she would've got 20 penalties,

:46:30.:46:33.

and she can't afford that, because that would incur an elimination.

:46:34.:46:39.

She's already had two hiccups earlier on. Tim Price for New

:46:40.:46:41.

Zealand. He was a late call-up. He got a

:46:42.:47:02.

dressage of 47. New Zealand equals six. And, again, a very experienced

:47:03.:47:10.

man to get New Zealand under way. His horse was withdrawn through

:47:11.:47:17.

injury back in the spring. As Gemma now is at the fence, the cottage and

:47:18.:47:23.

gate, going the wrong way. You can see the long route. We've only seen

:47:24.:47:31.

one attempt at it so far on the screen, and they didn't manage it.

:47:32.:47:36.

So, the majority taking the longer route. Another one that Nicolas

:47:37.:47:49.

Wettstein took, because he's been the only one who's been home in

:47:50.:47:53.

time. What a great start for Britain. Gemma Tattersall now in

:47:54.:48:01.

shot, out of the third of four quarters. She has had to refusals at

:48:02.:48:07.

defence four, and then later at the ski jump. So she is settling in to

:48:08.:48:20.

get him. Pippa Funnell is out at three, Fox-Pitt at two. And then at

:48:21.:48:30.

four, it is Kitty King. She's taken one long route, and she has

:48:31.:48:33.

certainly slowed down. So there is going to be a lot of time. Bandon to

:48:34.:48:41.

the end of this. I'm afraid it will. Don't be surprised to see three

:48:42.:48:48.

figures, I suspect, for Quicklook V and Gemma. This is a big individual

:48:49.:49:01.

fence, very square, the London vegetable trolley. Yes, well, this

:49:02.:49:07.

final water combination... Well, we're not going to see it. Back to

:49:08.:49:15.

Theo van de Vendel. This is one of three fences, and hopefully nothing

:49:16.:49:23.

will go wrong. He had a great day in the dressage

:49:24.:49:37.

arena, looks more impressive out on the cross-country course, this

:49:38.:49:45.

horse. Can he get the gate? That is what I think we will see. His air

:49:46.:49:51.

jacket goes off, gives him a bit of protection. If you jump a fence like

:49:52.:49:55.

that, if you catch Shawnee, it flicks you, which is the downside of

:49:56.:50:01.

jumping this fence. For me, he was too fast. That is a tight turn. The

:50:02.:50:07.

worry was always going to be if you turn tight and quick you're going to

:50:08.:50:12.

hit the fence on the angle and it will do exactly what happened. Flip

:50:13.:50:17.

the horse sideways. That was a ride error about the speed and approach.

:50:18.:50:21.

That air Fest would have helped him as the horse rolled over him but the

:50:22.:50:25.

horse and rider are back on their feet. Gemma Tattersall on the way

:50:26.:50:31.

home, she's over one of the historic bridges here in Rio and downhill to

:50:32.:50:41.

one of the last two fences. Very disappointing start for the British

:50:42.:50:47.

team. And, indeed, for Gemma, but the good thing is she's going to

:50:48.:50:50.

come home, going to come back with vital information for the other

:50:51.:50:54.

riders, and be able to tell them about the course. And she has

:50:55.:51:01.

completed. It is 40 jumping penalties to add to the score. 89.6.

:51:02.:51:07.

The penalties to be added to her dressage score of 47.2. So, Britain

:51:08.:51:16.

now has an uphill task. But not impossible, as the world champion

:51:17.:51:23.

combination for Germany get under way. Sandra Auffarth with Opgun

:51:24.:51:31.

Louvo. They won the worlds in France, and they are away and over

:51:32.:51:40.

the first. Germany leaning after -- leading after dressage but it is

:51:41.:51:46.

close. Tim Price, coming to the second of the four waters. It is a

:51:47.:51:51.

young horse but a horse with a lot of ability. And a great pilot on

:51:52.:52:03.

top. It is a big ask for this horse. He makes that water look very

:52:04.:52:09.

simple. There is quite a long gallop now. This is a part of the course

:52:10.:52:14.

the riders can make up a bit of time. Nice, open stretches. Yes,

:52:15.:52:21.

they've got the combination of the Oxo to the corner, but the rest of

:52:22.:52:28.

the fences on this big loop are just single straightforward fences. You

:52:29.:52:33.

could almost see him up the gear there as he hit the galloping

:52:34.:52:40.

stretch. I think Sandra probably wasn't going to jump that fence. I

:52:41.:52:46.

think she will be without penalties, just loses a fraction. This is a big

:52:47.:52:53.

striding horse, Opgun Louvo. He hasn't had cross-country penalties

:52:54.:52:58.

for a long, long time, this horse. As we are back now with Ringwood Sky

:52:59.:53:08.

Boy and Tim Price. For Sandra, it is 20 penalties because it is a, B, C,

:53:09.:53:12.

D and she circles between the elements. You're right. Well done.

:53:13.:53:22.

It is a penalty for the Bob Champion -- world champion. So, not the ideal

:53:23.:53:36.

start for the Germans. Six years without jumping penalty. And now 20.

:53:37.:53:41.

Tim has to be careful but he is being clever, he hasn't crossed his

:53:42.:53:45.

tracks, he's going to turn right and get back to the final element. This

:53:46.:53:51.

is where the course walking has been so important. They've been very

:53:52.:54:02.

clever with their fence numbering. The pilot has to be very awake with

:54:03.:54:08.

their course walking. Sandra very quickly through the ski jump. And

:54:09.:54:12.

you could see the problems she had a fence four, the horse was too bold

:54:13.:54:15.

and slightly running away with her. As he was going through the quarry,

:54:16.:54:20.

he was accelerating, she sat, hanging onto him, trying to steady

:54:21.:54:26.

him. He knows his job, this horse, but if the horse gets complacent, a

:54:27.:54:33.

little bit cocky, then these technical fences are going to catch

:54:34.:54:38.

them out. Great pictures were getting of this cross-country horse,

:54:39.:54:41.

and a lovely jump through that keyhole. Oh! What bad luck. And that

:54:42.:55:02.

is, I'm afraid, elimination. Oh, that was not in any way deserved. It

:55:03.:55:08.

wasn't deserved but he did go around quite fast. You can see how quick he

:55:09.:55:14.

is going and that is a tight circle. That is such an infuriating way to

:55:15.:55:20.

go out of the Olympics. Well, these early riders, these are the first

:55:21.:55:31.

riders of each team, and we are seeing drama right from the

:55:32.:55:32.

beginning. It is a clever bit of designing. The horses are coping,

:55:33.:55:36.

the mistakes are coming from the riders. I would agree with you. The

:55:37.:55:44.

grass is short, we have had some dampness in the air this morning.

:55:45.:55:50.

But we have seen there, you can't afford to take tight turns. Two we

:55:51.:55:56.

have seen slip up. Away goes the stallion written by Linda Algotsson

:55:57.:56:03.

who had a great run in the Swedish team. Her sister, Sara, is also in

:56:04.:56:16.

the team here. This stallion is ten years old. Back with Opgun Louvo.

:56:17.:56:28.

And Sandra Auffarth has 20 points penalty. He is flying along this

:56:29.:56:36.

course. As we've seen, the speed has caused some hick ups already on this

:56:37.:56:41.

course. Yet, it is speed that has got Astier Nicolas home in optimum

:56:42.:56:47.

time. What an intriguing day we have ahead. It was speed that got him

:56:48.:56:54.

around, but, on the other hand, he wasn't hurrying. Measured speed. A

:56:55.:56:59.

young guy who's been given stick in the past for being reckless and

:57:00.:57:08.

speeding, it was made sure riding. I can concur with that. Sandra

:57:09.:57:14.

certainly has not taken her foot off the accelerator. Over the big house.

:57:15.:57:27.

Still taking quite a hold, this big chestnut. Now 14 years old, what a

:57:28.:57:33.

start he has been. Looked fantastic. All the class and

:57:34.:57:46.

ability. He makes things look easy, and she's had that mistake earlier

:57:47.:57:49.

on but she isn't going to have time for the is time. It looks like she's

:57:50.:57:54.

absolutely determined to go inside the time. She has the 20 penalties,

:57:55.:58:02.

she doesn't want any more added. All these fences downhill, when you walk

:58:03.:58:08.

them, they look way over the maximum height, but that is clever course

:58:09.:58:13.

designing. This is a very decent fence. That is Brazilian timber,

:58:14.:58:21.

very, very hard. The team building this course have really put in an

:58:22.:58:26.

enormous amount of work. Some of the fences come all the way over from

:58:27.:58:32.

England. But some are the really hard timber, and that has made their

:58:33.:58:36.

job, where they've had to use that timber, very difficult. The cottage.

:58:37.:58:44.

She going straight. Oh, it isn't pretty but she gets it. We thought

:58:45.:58:48.

it was four in there but the horse decided himself to go in three, and

:58:49.:58:54.

you can see he had pull Sandra through there. The horse knew what

:58:55.:58:58.

he was doing and her job was to go with him.

:58:59.:59:06.

That's the third of the four quarters. -- waters. Still full of

:59:07.:59:17.

running. The weather has really helped today. It is much cooler, and

:59:18.:59:22.

the horses will be the beneficiaries of that. Now coming to this fence

:59:23.:59:31.

that actually looks quite small when you walk it but it does measure up

:59:32.:59:38.

to the maximum 1.2 metres. That is the maximum height, and she whistles

:59:39.:59:42.

around, she is within half a mile of home now. It'll be interesting to

:59:43.:59:51.

see with that refusal at fence four weather shall make the time because

:59:52.:59:56.

Astier Nicolas took all the short cuts, or there were not certain. My

:59:57.:00:00.

word, she's making sure she jumps this, and I don't blame her. It is

:00:01.:00:05.

upright, square and wide. And she wants to make sure she has control

:00:06.:00:10.

for this final water combination. The first American rider sets off,

:00:11.:00:19.

Boyd Martin, with Blackfoot Mystery. The Americans already we can see,

:00:20.:00:25.

they're not going to play much part in the competitions. They are equal

:00:26.:00:33.

sixth with New Zealand. 137.5, the score, some 15 marks behind the

:00:34.:00:38.

leaders. 15 marks on a day like this will be perfect.

:00:39.:00:43.

I think you are right, it is all about completion today. Sandra or

:00:44.:00:53.

fast at this final water. Took his stride out and she is not going to

:00:54.:00:57.

make that turn. The frog is a separate number so she won't get a

:00:58.:01:02.

penalty for that. She won't present, she was just a bit out of control.

:01:03.:01:06.

It is quite something the horse is still so fresh and bold and full of

:01:07.:01:10.

running at the end of this cross-country course. We thought

:01:11.:01:15.

horses would begin to look tired. This young lady jumped onto the

:01:16.:01:21.

scene in 2011. She has been in every Championship teams since and has won

:01:22.:01:26.

a gold medal every time she has been there. Will she do it this time? Not

:01:27.:01:33.

looking so good, they are Olympic champions remember. She heads down

:01:34.:01:40.

to the last. Individual silver in the Europeans last year but of

:01:41.:01:47.

course, a golden team it was for Germany in the Europeans. She comes

:01:48.:01:51.

out, stops the clock, still pulling her arms out. 44.8, but includes 20

:01:52.:02:02.

jumping penalties. Astier Nicolas is looking better and better at the

:02:03.:02:08.

time of asking. She looked like she was flying and almost out of

:02:09.:02:16.

control. Look at these lovely misters, the horses come back, this

:02:17.:02:22.

is to cool them down. The facilities here are absolutely a one. It is

:02:23.:02:26.

good to get the cameras in and to see the careful attention to detail

:02:27.:02:31.

to horses, they are so well looked after and indeed, they should be.

:02:32.:02:39.

Boyd Martin, one of two Australian-born riders but now

:02:40.:02:45.

riding for Australia. -- America. They were disappointed with their

:02:46.:02:49.

dressage but they have a very experienced team here, ending with

:02:50.:02:55.

the other Australian-born, now living in the United States, Phillip

:02:56.:03:05.

Dutton,. This roller-coaster ride through Sugarloaf mountain,.

:03:06.:03:12.

He whacked a flag at wasted no time. -- but he wasted no time. Linda

:03:13.:03:27.

Algotsson for Sweden. Always be known as a pretty big rider across

:03:28.:03:33.

the country. This young stallion not looking as if it is in a great

:03:34.:03:35.

hurry. Jumping the fence as well. She rode another of her mother's

:03:36.:03:52.

homebred horses in the European Championships in Malmo. This was the

:03:53.:03:56.

last time we saw her in a Swedish team, it was 2013. She was the

:03:57.:04:01.

mother of the great Vega who they also bred. Her sister took

:04:02.:04:09.

individual bronze in the London Olympics.

:04:10.:04:19.

Steadily down into the three jumps, got three strides and very

:04:20.:04:26.

definitely did not plan to make that turn but she was rather close to the

:04:27.:04:30.

alternatives. You have to be careful that she doesn't cross her tracks. I

:04:31.:04:34.

think she probably just got away with that. But trotting on a

:04:35.:04:42.

cross-country course is not ideal. But she is clear.

:04:43.:04:49.

Now in the start box is the first for the home team, Boyd Martin.

:04:50.:05:06.

Marcio Appel help with it the Ronchi men -- Iberon Jmen.

:05:07.:05:13.

They will be looking to get three good scores across cross-country

:05:14.:05:20.

because they know they will climb. Already, a lot of the top riders

:05:21.:05:25.

having these problems. This is Boyd Martin and he is travelling. Well,

:05:26.:05:30.

it is a thoroughbred and he is making use of the fact this horse

:05:31.:05:35.

will have the stamina and the gallop. He is not hanging around.

:05:36.:05:42.

One of three racehorses that have come off the track. This horse had a

:05:43.:05:47.

very good track record. He is using his speed to very good effect. Did a

:05:48.:05:56.

very decent dressage. Nicely over 17. 47.7, he got in the dressage. In

:05:57.:06:03.

30 Fifth Place but less than ten marks behind the lead. -- 35th

:06:04.:06:12.

place. He has looked quicker so far. Let's hope this horse has the

:06:13.:06:15.

stamina to keep this incredible gallop on right to the end. Boyd

:06:16.:06:20.

Martin knows his horses well and he gets them very fit. No wasting of

:06:21.:06:26.

time in the preparation for that fence. That is one of the

:06:27.:06:29.

significant factors that could slow you down. Picking up the pace a bit

:06:30.:06:35.

more as he comes to Sugarloaf Mountain.

:06:36.:06:45.

He did a good job because he was going very fast Andy had to get

:06:46.:06:52.

reorganised, rebalanced, make sure the horse was given the time to see

:06:53.:07:01.

these fences. Linda Algotsson with the stallion, fair net. Linda

:07:02.:07:08.

Algotsson one of the team trainers for the Swedish. They have had some

:07:09.:07:16.

good performances. The best was their team bronze medal in the Malmo

:07:17.:07:24.

Europeans in recent times, in 2013. Still clear, to our knowledge, as

:07:25.:07:29.

she now heads up another little rise to the fourth and final water.

:07:30.:07:38.

So, quite a test. You can see the test beautifully. Now she is in

:07:39.:07:54.

trouble. That is very definitely 20. Actually... They are separate now

:07:55.:07:58.

but they are not the first two? The first fence is at 28 -- 28 and the

:07:59.:08:03.

brush is at 29. STUDIO: A change of events for us.

:08:04.:08:53.

You will be able to keep up with it on the app and the Red Button. We

:08:54.:08:59.

will be back to see William Fox-Pitt around 4:40pm, in his eighth games

:09:00.:09:04.

and Michael Jung of Germany, the defending individual champion. A lot

:09:05.:09:08.

going on there but we have a lot to get through. We are going boxing, as

:09:09.:09:14.

you can probably guess. Four years ago, Great Britain's boxes topped

:09:15.:09:19.

the medals, three of them gold. A lot to live up to. We have seen four

:09:20.:09:27.

British boxers in action. Galal Yafai, the very first boxer to do so

:09:28.:09:32.

in the Rio competition. As you may know, he comes from very strong

:09:33.:09:36.

boxing stock, the youngest of three boxing brothers and one of his

:09:37.:09:40.

brothers competed for Great Britain in 2008. Like our new medallist in

:09:41.:09:46.

the pool, Jazz Carlin and Adam Peaty, these are Galal Yafai's first

:09:47.:09:50.

Olympics. We are currently at the amateur

:09:51.:10:12.

boxing club in Birmingham, where I am from, but I'll is a train in

:10:13.:10:17.

Sheffield. I have five brothers and two sisters and three of us box.

:10:18.:10:24.

I am amateur but I look up to them. I live with my brother. We are both

:10:25.:10:38.

really messy. He is always rummaging, it seems a bit unfair. I

:10:39.:10:43.

started when I was 17, my first fight when I was 18. I think I won

:10:44.:10:49.

my first nine or ten fights. I was working in a factory and I was

:10:50.:10:54.

boxing. I had to do everything and it was tough. I didn't think I was

:10:55.:10:58.

better than anyone else but I thought I was good enough to do

:10:59.:11:05.

something in boxing. This was after our brothers fought in the European

:11:06.:11:13.

Championships in Russia. One won a silver and the other won bronze.

:11:14.:11:18.

This is my brother. This is another picture of myself. I think I had won

:11:19.:11:24.

the under ten national Championships. Frank is the governor

:11:25.:11:33.

here, the main man. This is when my brothers fought. It was good for the

:11:34.:11:39.

young kids to look up to. This was the British light middleweight

:11:40.:11:43.

champion. He happens to be the performance director now. It is good

:11:44.:11:47.

to keep it all in Birmingham. I cannot wait to go. I have already

:11:48.:12:02.

been to Brazil in December. I won bronze there. It was a good trip and

:12:03.:12:06.

I enjoyed it but never did I think I would go back Brazil. I think a

:12:07.:12:10.

couple of my mates will come out, it'll be good to get some support.

:12:11.:12:15.

When I found out I made the team, I was over the moon.

:12:16.:12:22.

I never say what I am aiming for but I always want to go and win. I have

:12:23.:12:32.

only had 29 fights. I don't want to say I will win a medal but I will do

:12:33.:12:36.

my best and I am good enough to win a medal. It just depends what colour

:12:37.:12:44.

it is. STUDIO: Galal Yafai won his first fight against the boxer from

:12:45.:12:49.

Cameroon and is now rewarded, fighting against a 19-year-old

:12:50.:12:53.

Cuban. Number one in this light flyweight division and has been

:12:54.:12:57.

flagged up as a pretty special talent. He is known as the small

:12:58.:13:05.

giant back home. Yafai lost on points to him in June. Where is the

:13:06.:13:16.

crowd? It tends to be a bit of a slow burner they tend to drift in as

:13:17.:13:27.

the competition progresses. But make no mistake, the fans are here in

:13:28.:13:33.

attendance. This is the fifth session of boxing. Galal Yafai, 23

:13:34.:13:40.

years of age, from Birmingham. Preparing to square off for the

:13:41.:13:45.

second time in a matter of months against the number one seed, the man

:13:46.:13:50.

known as the tiny giant. The teenage sensation, Joahnys Argilagos of

:13:51.:13:57.

Cuba. This man making his first appearance in the Olympic tournament

:13:58.:14:00.

by virtue of the number one seeding. The beneficiary of buying in of the

:14:01.:14:06.

opening round and Galal Yafai interested against the aggressive

:14:07.:14:14.

Cameroon Ian. He won that contest comfortably on points. He is making

:14:15.:14:20.

his second appearance. You could spend a lot of time thinking about

:14:21.:14:22.

the tournament. Thinking doesn't really do you that

:14:23.:14:33.

much good at all because you are waiting and waiting and there are

:14:34.:14:36.

lots of distractions. You just want to get on with it. He already has

:14:37.:14:42.

one good contest under his belt and this will be the toughest contest

:14:43.:14:47.

probably of his career to date, but he is good enough to do it. He just

:14:48.:14:51.

has to believe in his own ability. He is ready.

:14:52.:15:00.

So, Yafai introduced to the crowd ahead of his second appearance in

:15:01.:15:05.

Rio 2016. So, tardy exit from the boxing ring

:15:06.:15:27.

by the cameraman. We are under way in this second-round contest of the

:15:28.:15:35.

men's four kilograms light flight weight -- light flyweight. The

:15:36.:15:43.

22-year-old from Birmingham, Yafai, has made a rapid rise. That was a

:15:44.:15:49.

good two punch combination, the reigning world champion, that is

:15:50.:15:53.

Argilagos of Cuba, the tiny giant, the second meeting of these two

:15:54.:15:55.

boxers in a matter of months. They met before and it was Argilagos

:15:56.:16:16.

who won a unanimous decision. You can see straightaway the tactics

:16:17.:16:20.

from Yafai is to keep on the front foot and keep his opponent off

:16:21.:16:24.

balance, so it is a positive start from him. He has to beat his

:16:25.:16:29.

opponent to the punch. The chap is important and then throw the left

:16:30.:16:32.

hand but he has to compete with him in terms of the work rate. Look at

:16:33.:16:37.

Argilagos trying to get into the rhythm is so Yafai, it is a good

:16:38.:16:41.

start but he has to keep going and keep throwing the shots. That was a

:16:42.:16:46.

good shot from Yafai. One of three boxing brothers out of the Yafai

:16:47.:16:54.

brotherhood. They are now professionals, his two other

:16:55.:16:58.

brothers. He is in pursuit of his man. Argilagos, this compact

:16:59.:17:04.

flyweight doesn't stand more than five foot tall. Yafai with the

:17:05.:17:14.

advantage in height. That was a decent right champ. He is a very

:17:15.:17:19.

good move, the Cuban, using all of the space in the boxing ring. You

:17:20.:17:23.

have to disrupt the rhythm of the Cubans. If you let them disrupt

:17:24.:17:31.

their -- establish their rhythm, they go through the motions in terms

:17:32.:17:37.

of skills. They show their skills, and so Yafai has to disrupt the

:17:38.:17:43.

rhythm. He is confident on the front foot. He has to do twos and threes

:17:44.:17:47.

rather than singles. He has to double up. Targeting the body

:17:48.:18:01.

effectively, Yafai. There are shouts of Cuba reverberating around this

:18:02.:18:06.

arena. The crowd favourite is the man in red. Argilagos beginning to

:18:07.:18:14.

peck and Pope now as he skips away from him.

:18:15.:18:24.

Yafai on the front foot, aggressively in pursuit of his man

:18:25.:18:29.

throughout the three minutes but Argilagos with plenty of success on

:18:30.:18:32.

the back foot during the opening round. It hasn't been too bad for

:18:33.:18:37.

Yafai. He is on the front foot, pushing his opponent back, this guy

:18:38.:18:42.

is very skilful. As he punches, he maintains a gap because he needs the

:18:43.:18:48.

time and room to work. Yafai, when Argilagos punches and steps back,

:18:49.:18:53.

that's when he has to increase that fast tempo with the feet. That is a

:18:54.:18:59.

nice shot. Yafai waited and hesitated but that's a better

:19:00.:19:03.

response, pushing his opponent back. He's there, that's not bad. Then he

:19:04.:19:09.

walks onto the right hand. That is a lovely shot from Argilagos. And

:19:10.:19:14.

again but it is a close round. So the ten point system used. One of

:19:15.:19:22.

the judges favouring Yafai. 2-1 favouring the man in red.

:19:23.:19:27.

Competitive opening round and Yafai will take encouragement from that.

:19:28.:19:34.

Yafai won the fourth round across the board in early competition. He

:19:35.:19:38.

has started aggressively in this second-round.

:19:39.:19:48.

In the WSB final, he lost rounds one, two and five from all three

:19:49.:19:59.

judges. That was in Uzbekistan. There's the room again that

:20:00.:20:04.

Argilagos needs. He's hardly coming forward, the Cuban. He's sitting and

:20:05.:20:09.

maintaining the gap. That is lovely boxing by the Cuban. Yafai has to

:20:10.:20:15.

keep on him, send the left hand in. That's better from Yafai. That was a

:20:16.:20:21.

striking left hook from Yafai just a moment ago.

:20:22.:20:33.

Yafai clearly one of the best light flyweight boxers in the world having

:20:34.:20:44.

booked his place in Rio 2016 via the European qualification tournament.

:20:45.:20:47.

It's up to debate whether he's the best boxer in the family,

:20:48.:20:52.

considering his older siblings have had glittering ten years in the best

:20:53.:20:57.

of Great Britain. Talented family, and they? Very good boxers. Good

:20:58.:21:08.

punches, good technique, good style. Now Yafai coming forward, and this

:21:09.:21:14.

is the right tactic. On the ropes, he has to punch in terms of threes

:21:15.:21:20.

and fours. So, Argilagos invoking the referee on that occasion. But

:21:21.:21:23.

obeying the instruction to stop boxing. Landed a couple of

:21:24.:21:31.

unprotected shots on the chin of Yafai. He's targeting the body in an

:21:32.:21:35.

effort to slow down the movement of this Cuban. He has a good right hand

:21:36.:21:42.

and a good left hook on the retreat, Argilagos. He has to switch the

:21:43.:21:47.

attack now and again, Yafai, to downstairs, target the body. This is

:21:48.:21:56.

a great effort from Yafai. He has to keep it going. He's taken a lot of

:21:57.:22:02.

encouragement from that first meeting, particularly taking the

:22:03.:22:07.

fourth round across the board. But, again, Argilagos almost perpetually

:22:08.:22:13.

on the back foot. That could count against him in the scoring of the

:22:14.:22:21.

this round. Argilagos is crafty, holding on the inside too much. The

:22:22.:22:27.

referee has spotted that. Let's listen in to the blue corner.

:22:28.:22:41.

Just watching the boxing here now, Yafai on the front foot coming

:22:42.:22:48.

forward. He puts his opponent under pressure. The crowd are getting

:22:49.:22:55.

animated as well. Again, it is a close round. Let's have a look. So,

:22:56.:23:00.

this time, all three judges have favoured the work of the man in red,

:23:01.:23:08.

so it is tied up for judge C. It is a 2-point deficit faced by Yafai

:23:09.:23:12.

going into the third and final round of this second-round encounter.

:23:13.:23:25.

Great Britain's Yafai needs a big round him because he's trailing by

:23:26.:23:32.

two points on the scorecards of two judges. And perhaps aware of that

:23:33.:23:36.

fact in his own mind, if not empirically, he's come out with such

:23:37.:23:41.

an aggressive stance. Good right hand through the middle by a

:23:42.:23:44.

Argilagos but it is a swarming attack by Yafai in an effort to

:23:45.:23:48.

extend his stay in the Olympic tournament. Yes, great effort from

:23:49.:23:54.

Yafai in this round, listening to his corner, he started very quickly.

:23:55.:23:58.

He knows he's behind, he has to raise the tempo and he's doing that.

:23:59.:24:03.

He has to steady himself and tried to improve the accuracy a little bit

:24:04.:24:08.

more, throw the punches on the inside. That's better. Just to try

:24:09.:24:13.

to create a bit of space on the inside to work. Argilagos, as well

:24:14.:24:20.

as the world title in Bohol last year, he took the American

:24:21.:24:29.

Continental title as well. He's granted an audience with Fidel

:24:30.:24:33.

Castro in 2013. He is an established star. The Cubans have high hopes to

:24:34.:24:38.

continue their tradition of excellence in the boxing ring. Good

:24:39.:24:42.

right hand by Argilagos, now engaging with Yafai in the centre of

:24:43.:24:48.

the ring. Yafai's attack is slowing down, and he's frustrated.

:24:49.:25:05.

It is a 50-50 contest. Yafai is having some success. Maybe moved off

:25:06.:25:14.

to the side here and there and try different angles. But he must punch

:25:15.:25:19.

more on the inside, Yafai, he has to find the room. Argilagos is clever

:25:20.:25:23.

on the inside. The referee should be stronger because he is holding a lot

:25:24.:25:29.

on the inside. Good uppercut from Yafai in that exchange but if the

:25:30.:25:37.

referee isn't intervening, Yafai has to take the opportunity to take this

:25:38.:25:41.

man under significant pressure. Terrific exchange at centre ring and

:25:42.:25:49.

the crowd are on their feet. Again, Argilagos showing ring craft beyond

:25:50.:25:56.

his tender 19 years, tying up his man on the blindside of the referee.

:25:57.:26:01.

He has to find his space is better, young Yafai. It is an art to box on

:26:02.:26:06.

the inside, you have to find the room to work. He is being dragged

:26:07.:26:15.

in, isn't he? He can't find the space, Yafai. Still, a great effort

:26:16.:26:18.

from Yafai against the favourite Cuban. There's the bell to conclude

:26:19.:26:27.

this second-round bout in the 49 kilograms light flyweight division.

:26:28.:26:31.

Argilagos, the number one seed and number one ranked boxer in the

:26:32.:26:35.

world, the reigning world champion won the first two rounds. Judges a

:26:36.:26:41.

and B after two rounds, it was split, one round of 19 apiece. Given

:26:42.:26:46.

that status going into the third and final round, one suspects Yafai's

:26:47.:26:53.

Olympics is going to come to an end. He needed a big round and he

:26:54.:26:57.

probably hasn't done enough. It has been a great experience and given

:26:58.:27:02.

this fellow, this might be the hardest fight he will have in the

:27:03.:27:05.

tournament. It's a shame it's happened in the second round. That

:27:06.:27:10.

warranted a semifinal or final because you've got the two best

:27:11.:27:14.

boxers at this weight, we are watching them now. That is the luck

:27:15.:27:18.

of the draw in the Olympic tournament. 22 boxers contesting

:27:19.:27:24.

this light flyweight division. So, boxers will have to box as many as

:27:25.:27:29.

five times for the final on the 14th of August. One of the changes and

:27:30.:27:33.

fermented since London 2012. The final is not taking place over the

:27:34.:27:37.

course of the final week. They are sprinkled throughout. Let's get the

:27:38.:27:41.

announcement and the conclusion of this bout in the 49 kilo light

:27:42.:27:43.

flyweight. So, Argilagos, the tournament number

:27:44.:28:05.

one seed, the reigning world champion goes through after a

:28:06.:28:12.

hard-fought split decision over Yafai, whose older brother was

:28:13.:28:18.

eliminated by a Cuban in his Olympic appearance in Beijing eight years

:28:19.:28:21.

ago. A similar fate has befallen Galal Yafai as he is eliminated by

:28:22.:28:27.

the world number one. He put forth a terrific effort, denied on a split

:28:28.:28:32.

decision to the world number one. It was a tremendous display from Yafai.

:28:33.:28:36.

Taking the current world champion to a split. Very close indeed, there is

:28:37.:28:41.

only a point in it, so all credit to him, I am so proud of him, Galal

:28:42.:28:49.

Yafai. Well done, son. So, the Olympic experience of young Yafai

:28:50.:28:52.

ends in the second round. He made a bit of history, the first man since

:28:53.:28:58.

Moscow 1980 to compete without a head guard in Olympic competition

:28:59.:29:01.

when he opened the tournament with his victory over Cameroonian on the

:29:02.:29:07.

6th of August. Here in the second round over Cuba's Maestro,

:29:08.:29:12.

Argilagos, Yafai has been eliminated and the world number one goes on to

:29:13.:29:17.

the quarterfinals. Disappointing. Absolutely no

:29:18.:29:21.

disgrace at all for Galal Yafai. One heck of a fight and beautifully

:29:22.:29:28.

called. It came too early. It was worthy of seeing in a semifinal or a

:29:29.:29:32.

final but I'm afraid he's gone and when you look at the draw, it has

:29:33.:29:36.

been particularly unkind to about six I'd say of the 12 boxers in the

:29:37.:29:42.

British team, so it's going to be tough for some of these fighters in

:29:43.:29:46.

the coming days. We are going back and forward all over the place here

:29:47.:29:50.

on this third day of the real Olympics. We saw Gemma Tattersall up

:29:51.:30:00.

against in the cross-country. It is a tough course. Two-time penalties.

:30:01.:30:04.

Let's hear her thoughts on the cause. She said, you needed to wear

:30:05.:30:07.

a series of pants to compete. Did you feel anything before the

:30:08.:30:22.

fourth quarter, that she might not be onside today? I think she

:30:23.:30:28.

slightly frightened herself and then she ran a bit blind to fence four

:30:29.:30:32.

and I lost my steering and couldn't quite get to the B element or the

:30:33.:30:38.

last element. It frightened her a little bit. Then she went very

:30:39.:30:41.

careful and a bit green on me and a bit scared. Then it's sort of talk

:30:42.:30:48.

all my coaxing ability to get her around and she finished up better

:30:49.:30:53.

than she started actually. It is such a difficult course because

:30:54.:30:56.

people are trying to take the longer route but it means you will get time

:30:57.:31:01.

penalties. What is the secret to this course? What information will

:31:02.:31:04.

you be taking back to the rest of your team? Quick look five is quite

:31:05.:31:10.

a young horse and I think some of the more experienced horses will be

:31:11.:31:17.

fine around this course. I think I will just be telling them as much as

:31:18.:31:28.

I can so they have the most ability. It is never easy going out first.

:31:29.:31:35.

Definitely not. STUDIO: She will pass on that information gleaned

:31:36.:31:38.

from the course to the other riders. We will be going back in about half

:31:39.:31:44.

an hour. We are heading for the judo mat now. We have seen Ashley

:31:45.:31:48.

McKenzie and Colin Oates go out for Great Britain. We have the first of

:31:49.:31:55.

the women competitors today. If you don't know your ones are as from

:31:56.:32:02.

your Rippon, let's remind you of the finer points of judo.

:32:03.:32:14.

Judo was invented in the late 19th century in Japan. Each contest in

:32:15.:32:22.

judo has a duration of five minutes that men or four for women. The

:32:23.:32:28.

scores are level at the end of the contest, they enter golden score

:32:29.:32:33.

where there is no time limit and the first penalty awarded will decide

:32:34.:32:38.

the contest. The high-risk Delhi highest scoring technique is an

:32:39.:32:55.

Ippon. When an opponent submits or gives up... Holding down an opponent

:32:56.:33:14.

for 16 seconds or more but less than 20 seconds.

:33:15.:33:23.

Judo is a knockout competition and all competitors are based in a

:33:24.:33:31.

drawer divided into two tables. The top eight athletes in each weight

:33:32.:33:35.

category will be seeded in line with their world rankings and the two

:33:36.:33:38.

finalists will compete for the gold and silver medals. A 57 kilo

:33:39.:33:49.

category. She is already the reigning Commonwealth Games champion

:33:50.:33:52.

and she makes her Olympic debut today. This fighter took up the

:33:53.:33:56.

sport for self defence, she said and before she was given lottery

:33:57.:34:00.

funding, she had two jobs just to keep her dream alive of coming to

:34:01.:34:05.

the Olympic Games. She fulfils that ambition today and she will have as

:34:06.:34:09.

an opponent and Australian. We are ready to go, it is Austria in

:34:10.:34:25.

blue, Great Britain in white. Fantastic story. European champion,

:34:26.:34:30.

former European champion, European medallist, medals almost at every

:34:31.:34:31.

Grand Slam. Smythe Davis is a brilliant

:34:32.:34:45.

competitor and getting better and better at every competition. She has

:34:46.:34:52.

a different build. You can see the line of frame, she has all of that

:34:53.:34:59.

height and that is why she can fight in this 57 kilograms division and

:35:00.:35:01.

fight to really well. She took home a bronze medal in

:35:02.:35:13.

Egypt, so two bronze medals for those eight attempts, if you like,

:35:14.:35:18.

at World Championship level. She is capable. She had some really good

:35:19.:35:22.

moves on the ground. She has a set move that she does so Smythe Davis

:35:23.:35:28.

will have to be careful of that. Smythe Davis just walked out of the

:35:29.:35:32.

area, so she has to be more careful on the edge as well. Big right arm,

:35:33.:35:40.

she needs in order to do her attack. Look at that. She actually went

:35:41.:35:49.

right the way underneath. With a shoulder throw. This is where she

:35:50.:35:53.

has to be careful. She gets a Waza-ari for it. Filzmoser now onto

:35:54.:36:02.

the ground. Can she get this? This could possibly be very dangerous

:36:03.:36:14.

for... The Waza-ari has been changed to a Yuko. That was absolutely

:36:15.:36:26.

brilliant. The resistance that came from Filzmoser and Smythe Davis

:36:27.:36:29.

somehow able to get on top of that. That was incredible. That is where

:36:30.:36:36.

she has to be very careful of this lady because this lady has a couple

:36:37.:36:47.

of set moves and she does very well. Yuko ahead and she is willing to

:36:48.:36:53.

attack on the ground but she doesn't want to be attacked. The difference

:36:54.:37:00.

being is that the Yuko is on the side, upper part of the body from

:37:01.:37:04.

the side so any part of the body that hits the ground, a Waza ari is

:37:05.:37:10.

given for anything that rolls onto the points of the shoulder. Not

:37:11.:37:20.

quite got the force of an Ippon. And Ippon is forced on the points of the

:37:21.:37:26.

shoulders. These two crashing onto the mat. Absolutely, it is a good

:37:27.:37:34.

technical fight. Smythe Davis just ahead with that Yuko. They are

:37:35.:37:45.

really going for it in Russia. The 23-year-old Smythe Davis knows what

:37:46.:37:49.

she is doing. She is looking to waste as much time I think, rather

:37:50.:37:54.

than trying to get her holding down. Good tactics while you are on top.

:37:55.:38:00.

Purposely tried to waste as much time as you can if you have got a

:38:01.:38:05.

good hold or a good move on the ground, then you go for it

:38:06.:38:06.

specifically. Filzmoser won't give up, she will

:38:07.:38:21.

keep coming forward. She has got plenty of strength. Has she got

:38:22.:38:25.

enough to get through the last 34 seconds? Another good score. A Waza

:38:26.:38:34.

ari this time to Smythe Davis. Two really good scores. One Waza ari,

:38:35.:38:44.

one Yuko. She is giving away experience and height but giving

:38:45.:38:47.

away nothing on the score board, Smythe Davis. She has plenty of

:38:48.:38:53.

spirit and gumption. We can see that. She's not wanting to back

:38:54.:38:58.

away, she wants to continue to go harder. Only a certain position

:38:59.:39:07.

Filzmoser can do on the ground. I think she will probably retire after

:39:08.:39:12.

this Olympic Games. Smythe Davis did a really good job. Technically and

:39:13.:39:18.

tactically, everything right. She got two really good scores. She

:39:19.:39:23.

never looked in danger. Just that one time on the ground. A little

:39:24.:39:27.

bit, stayed there a little bit too long, but any other time on the

:39:28.:39:30.

ground, it was her initiating the technique.

:39:31.:39:38.

Great change of direction and you could see that she rolls onto her

:39:39.:39:47.

shoulders and gets the Waza ari. Lovely change of direction. We have

:39:48.:39:51.

always said she needs something over the other flank. An excellent bout,

:39:52.:39:59.

that, and now official Great Britain, the victory. And Smythe

:40:00.:40:07.

Davis continues on to the round of 16.

:40:08.:40:12.

STUDIO: She does indeed and she will continue in the next hour we

:40:13.:40:19.

believe. Next up for her is team-mate Ashley McKenzie's fiance

:40:20.:40:25.

of France. She took the bronze in this category in 2012 so maybe a few

:40:26.:40:30.

split loyalties for Ashley today! In the tennis, it has been eventful so

:40:31.:40:35.

far. Venus Williams has gone out of the singles and the Williams sisters

:40:36.:40:39.

remarkably and unexpectedly go out of the doubles. We saw Novak

:40:40.:40:45.

Djokovic beaten for the second time in a row by Juan Martin Del Potro. I

:40:46.:40:51.

think he was in tears after that, was not happy about going home

:40:52.:40:54.

because he really wants to win a gold medal, one of the few things

:40:55.:40:58.

that has eluded him in his career. The Murray brothers involved in a

:40:59.:41:02.

real thriller last night, it went on really late. The Brazilians had lost

:41:03.:41:09.

the first set... The Britons had lost the first set and it was very

:41:10.:41:12.

tense and a tie-breaker in the second.

:41:13.:41:20.

Yes! The presence of mind to play that. Just not enough on it.

:41:21.:42:01.

That was a really clever shot into the space. Match point number four.

:42:02.:42:36.

Having saved four match points, it is now set point for Great Britain.

:42:37.:43:55.

Lightning reflexes. A mistake in the end from Andy Murray.

:43:56.:44:36.

cause. She said, you needed to wear a series of pants to compete.

:44:37.:44:39.

It was probably going out, the previous shot. I think the call came

:44:40.:44:56.

too late. Match point to number five.

:44:57.:45:24.

202 kilometres, out wide. Character stuff from Andy Murray.

:45:25.:45:46.

The first ace of the match saves match point. The fifth match point.

:45:47.:46:25.

Bellucci, out wide and it is set point number two.

:46:26.:46:58.

Oh, Sa again. The deaf to stuff touches in this crucial moment.

:46:59.:47:06.

Could not have placed it better. So, we've had five match points. We

:47:07.:47:22.

have had two set points for Great Britain.

:47:23.:47:39.

Bellucci just could not get hold of that. Murray firing attacked him.

:47:40.:47:48.

Set point Great Britain but on the break serve now.

:47:49.:47:55.

And it will be Jamie Murray to serve.

:47:56.:48:31.

Oh! Bellucci launching himself time after time at the ball, but, in the

:48:32.:48:44.

end, it is Sa who makes the crucial move. This is macho stuff. A third

:48:45.:48:55.

set point goes astray. It is an ace. What a time to produce

:48:56.:49:22.

it. They've produced two in the tie-break.

:49:23.:49:29.

Here is set point number four for Great Britain.

:49:30.:49:59.

No, it is just out. And it is 12-12. Once more, they will turn around.

:50:00.:50:16.

Andy hit the shot, he thought it was going to be good enough. A lot of

:50:17.:50:25.

the crowd feared it would be. He hit it almost too well. About a foot

:50:26.:50:27.

long. Just shy of two hours they've been

:50:28.:50:35.

going. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

:50:36.:50:51.

So, a six match point for Brazil. Oh! What a shot from Murray! He has

:50:52.:52:02.

got an exquisite touch. Britain never needed it more than in that

:52:03.:52:06.

point. Look at that, full stretch a couple of times. The return with a

:52:07.:52:13.

single hand, fantastic! 13 apiece. There is going to be a challenge. It

:52:14.:52:37.

looked like it might have been out, to be honest.

:52:38.:52:44.

The ball was called in, and it was in!

:52:45.:52:53.

So, again, this is set point number five.

:52:54.:53:17.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Cool as you like, Bellucci at the

:53:18.:53:24.

net. Hammering at to the Jamie forehand.

:53:25.:53:50.

Match point number seven. Oh, what a way to win! The net makes

:53:51.:54:48.

the crucial intervention. A wonderful doubles match. And it is a

:54:49.:54:55.

shame it should end like that after an epic tie-break. The Murrays could

:54:56.:55:04.

not have done more. In the end, joy right around this Olympic Tennis

:55:05.:55:10.

Centre. Thomaz Bellucci and Andre Sara, a heroic performance.

:55:11.:55:17.

It was. It was a brilliant win for the Brazilian pair and the Murray

:55:18.:55:21.

brothers came here as a second seed, so it was a superb night for the

:55:22.:55:25.

host country. And the marches on in the singles. Great shame for Jamie

:55:26.:55:31.

but he has the consolation of a Davis cup victory last year if he's

:55:32.:55:35.

feeling down today. We're not sure if Andy will compete in the mixed

:55:36.:55:39.

doubles, it is likely he will, being a silver-medallist last time in

:55:40.:55:43.

London but that will be confirmed later in the week. So, that is the

:55:44.:55:47.

situation last night. This evening we are hoping for better things in

:55:48.:55:53.

the gymnastics because four years ago, Max Whitlock and company, they

:55:54.:55:56.

took the bronze medal. It happen to have been the first team medal in

:55:57.:56:02.

gymnastics for a full century. Now, can they swing and upgrade here in

:56:03.:56:04.

Rio? Repetition. It is an art. Day in,

:56:05.:56:10.

day out. Eat. Sleep. Train. Repeat. Mastering skills... Building your

:56:11.:56:39.

strength... There are no short cuts. They say practice makes perfect. And

:56:40.:56:48.

it's true. This is about fine tuning, precision... But, most of

:56:49.:56:56.

all, it's about passion. That's what drives you to be better, gives you

:56:57.:57:00.

the strength to go again... And again. So, you keep going. Until

:57:01.:57:09.

you're ready to deliver. When it really counts. That is the art of

:57:10.:57:20.

repetition. I am looking forward to that and I'm sure you are, too, this

:57:21.:57:23.

evening. Were looking forward to an awful lot on day three. It was

:57:24.:57:29.

supposed to be yesterday that Glover and stunning work going for gold.

:57:30.:57:34.

They should have been out on the water but it was given up because of

:57:35.:57:40.

the weather conditions. They've kept their powder dry until today. Half

:57:41.:57:45.

an hour until we see the pair in revving unbeaten in five years, 36

:57:46.:57:50.

races. They are the team to beat in Rio. Great Britain are Olympic

:57:51.:58:05.

champions! Glover, Stanning, we stand up and salute you! Good

:58:06.:58:10.

morning, thank you for letting me come along so early and disturb you.

:58:11.:58:17.

You look so bright and breezy, this is what you do every day. Yes, early

:58:18.:58:23.

mornings are normal and it is great to have you along. We will show you

:58:24.:58:27.

what is a normal day for us. This is a fantastic place. Fantastic

:58:28.:58:34.

facility. Where are we off to? Were going to go to the gym first. So,

:58:35.:58:41.

everybody is in here, they come in here, have a stretch before they go

:58:42.:58:46.

out. Is this a social stretch? Yes, a bit of a chat and social stretch.

:58:47.:58:54.

Do you ever still come in and feel stiff? Yes, quite often. If we have

:58:55.:59:01.

had a big session, the next day we will come in, legs or arms,

:59:02.:59:05.

everything will be hurting from the previous day. These machines are

:59:06.:59:08.

something you never want to be told you are on. Six days a week, this

:59:09.:59:15.

regime. Sometimes seven. Six mostly. Then on a Sunday we train as well.

:59:16.:59:24.

We get a day off every 3-6 weeks. When you talk about success at the

:59:25.:59:28.

Olympics, what is up here is the important thing. It is whether you

:59:29.:59:31.

can switch it on at the right time and get the best out of each other

:59:32.:59:35.

and perform when you have to perform. Be tougher to do in Rio

:59:36.:59:41.

2016 because they are undefeated Olympic champions, Olympic

:59:42.:59:42.

champions, world champions, European champions, they hold all the

:59:43.:59:46.

records. It would be a shock if they didn't win gold. It would be, yeah.

:59:47.:59:52.

They found a level of consistency and contentment with each other

:59:53.:59:56.

inside and outside of the boat which makes them formidable. How easy is

:59:57.:00:00.

it to make sure you stay on the same page in terms of your goals and

:00:01.:00:05.

aspirations? We find it easy because we complement each other. If we were

:00:06.:00:09.

two of the same, it would be very difficult. I think I'm probably more

:00:10.:00:14.

energetic in my delivery of things. And kind of quite focused. I drive a

:00:15.:00:20.

lot of the things we do and Heather absorbs a lot of it. From the

:00:21.:00:24.

outside, you might think you're about to become a major in the army

:00:25.:00:28.

so you might be the one who would be much more noisy and are you like

:00:29.:00:35.

that? I am not your typical army officer. I am a bit more stand back

:00:36.:00:39.

and observe. When you drive out of those gates,

:00:40.:00:50.

are you in touch with each other or are your lives separate? We are

:00:51.:00:54.

probably in touch too much! Normally I need to remind header of something

:00:55.:01:02.

and so we will text. We are friends away from this environment as well

:01:03.:01:06.

so we can leave rowing behind and go and do something as friends. It is

:01:07.:01:11.

not all about the rowing. It is ours from hard work from us but also our

:01:12.:01:17.

friends and family. Once you are an Olympian, you always are. It is who

:01:18.:01:21.

we are and what we have worked so hard for. With London, it was great

:01:22.:01:27.

and an experience we never expected to have in our lifetime. To go and

:01:28.:01:35.

win gold in our lifetime. You step onto the plane and off the plane in

:01:36.:01:38.

a different country and you represent that name on your back and

:01:39.:01:44.

that is the version you have grown up with. The opportunity to go and

:01:45.:01:49.

do that is really special. There is this version I have had since I was

:01:50.:01:53.

at school. We certainly haven't forgotten that triumph on day five

:01:54.:01:57.

in London. That started the gold rush. We have never been able to

:01:58.:02:04.

forget it, each time they put a letter in their golden postbox, they

:02:05.:02:09.

think of that pair. They are very proud of those two citizens. We will

:02:10.:02:16.

see them on the water shortly. We have seen Galal Yafai go out to a

:02:17.:02:21.

very good Cuban in the boxing. We will get his reaction to that

:02:22.:02:25.

contest. Not the results you would have wanted but are you happy you

:02:26.:02:31.

gave a good account of yourself? I am gutted. I know I am as good as

:02:32.:02:38.

him. It is no good. What did you put it down to? It was a close fight. I

:02:39.:02:46.

thought I won. I did my best. You thought you did enough? Yes. It is

:02:47.:02:54.

one of those, it is just boxing. Can you take any positives from this? I

:02:55.:03:00.

know you are disappointed now but just one point in it. No positives

:03:01.:03:08.

really, just all negative. Widdy go from here? Just have a rest and

:03:09.:03:15.

support the rest of the boys. It has been great. Take care.

:03:16.:03:24.

Understandably disappointed. But he can be proud of that performance and

:03:25.:03:28.

I am sure reflect on it in a more positive light in a few hours when

:03:29.:03:33.

he has let it sink in. This flyweight division is packed and we

:03:34.:03:39.

have Paddy Barnes of Ireland and we are about to see him live. Of all

:03:40.:03:45.

B20 Olympic medals won by Ireland, 16 of them have been in boxing and

:03:46.:03:51.

seven of them have been in the last games and several of them have been

:03:52.:03:58.

won by Paddy. He is getting a bit fed up of being called Paddy Brauns.

:03:59.:04:09.

Paddy about to come into the boxing ring.

:04:10.:04:17.

About in London, the semifinal, many people Portpatrick barns -- many

:04:18.:04:55.

people thought Patrick Bamford Mike was unlucky.

:04:56.:05:07.

He is the number four seed in the tournament. He really psyched

:05:08.:05:16.

himself up. He has got a bronze medal in his previous tournament.

:05:17.:05:21.

Paddy Barnes has already says, he doesn't want to be referred to as

:05:22.:05:30.

Paddy bronze. He wants to step up to gold. This is his moment. He is a

:05:31.:05:38.

good boxer. He always adapts really well, Paddy Barnes.

:05:39.:05:51.

The Irish boxing teams Areem 's trust as Paddy Barnes appears to

:05:52.:06:02.

make his first appearance in Rio 2016.

:06:03.:06:12.

We are underway. The man wearing red has come out very quickly indeed,

:06:13.:06:22.

driving Paddy Barnes backwards. He is Samuel Carmona Heredia, of Spain.

:06:23.:06:28.

His opponent, the vast Lee experienced, reigning two time

:06:29.:06:33.

bronze-medallist, Paddy Barnes. Just helped himself to a wonderful right

:06:34.:06:39.

hand to the body. He has that determination and ambition to

:06:40.:06:44.

improve his standing. In the Olympic boxing tournament, to improve on the

:06:45.:06:49.

two bronzes he has come away with in the last Olympic Games. Targeting

:06:50.:06:54.

that body effectively, Paddy Barnes. I think he is doing that because he

:06:55.:06:59.

knows that Samuel Carmona Heredia uses the ring space very well and

:07:00.:07:05.

moves. You have to target the body. Hit him and hurt him downstairs and

:07:06.:07:11.

that will make him do his better work when his opponent holds his

:07:12.:07:18.

feet a bit more. Paddy Barnes driving the retreating Samuel

:07:19.:07:23.

Carmona Heredia back even further. Paddy Barnes one of nine boxes to be

:07:24.:07:29.

bestowed with the privilege of being flag-bearers in the opening ceremony

:07:30.:07:33.

a few days ago. A good right-hander around the corner from Samuel

:07:34.:07:36.

Carmona Heredia. Paddy Barnes came back with the same shot. The trouble

:07:37.:07:41.

Samuel Carmona Heredia will have here against Barnes, failing to hit

:07:42.:07:49.

the target because the hands of Paddy Barnes a very high and he

:07:50.:07:53.

clever ad block blocking shots. Samuel Carmona Heredia is swinging

:07:54.:07:59.

wildly, because those hands of Paddy Barnes a very high. Barnes is so

:08:00.:08:07.

confident in all facets of the boxing game. Effective at going

:08:08.:08:11.

backwards and forwards and moving side to side, laterally. Here ears

:08:12.:08:18.

at demonstrating his power fighting off the ropes but I suspect he won't

:08:19.:08:22.

want to keep to that confinement for too long. Hands held high by Samuel

:08:23.:08:30.

Carmona Heredia. But he did manage to penetrate the guard. A left hand

:08:31.:08:35.

by Samuel Carmona Heredia. Terrific right hand to the body from Barnes.

:08:36.:08:42.

Now on top of the logo, commanding centre ring.

:08:43.:08:51.

Both boxers keeping their hands liked when in punching range but

:08:52.:08:57.

when they move away and relax a little bit, they are dropping their

:08:58.:09:00.

hands and maybe that is when both of them should think about launching an

:09:01.:09:04.

attack, when their opponents move away. They could both benefit of

:09:05.:09:13.

just jumping on their opponents. I think Paddy Barnes has taken it

:09:14.:09:19.

funny. An action packed three minutes to begin this light

:09:20.:09:29.

flyweight contest. Samuel Carmona Heredia with a lot of shops but a

:09:30.:09:36.

lot missing the target. Paddy Barnes seemed very happy at the end of the

:09:37.:09:40.

round, because he had a couple of good shots towards the end.

:09:41.:09:45.

Switching there, from body to head, just gets caught there and replies

:09:46.:09:51.

with a left hook. Have a look at these scores. There you go. Samuel

:09:52.:09:59.

Carmona Heredia has taken it for judges A and B but judge C favouring

:10:00.:10:08.

Barnes. That surprises me a little bit. To the second round. Paddy

:10:09.:10:18.

Barnes, experienced man from Ireland, has come out really with

:10:19.:10:22.

aggressive intent. A good left hook to the body and then a right hook to

:10:23.:10:26.

the head. Paddy Barnes stopped momentarily. Coming onto the front

:10:27.:10:33.

foot, Paddy Barnes, having conceded that opening round. Greater urgency

:10:34.:10:38.

from the work of the man in blue. Holding his hands a lot higher but

:10:39.:10:42.

closing the gap down, looking for threes and fours. Bent arm shots

:10:43.:10:49.

now. Probably been told he is behind. Effectively, shots to the

:10:50.:10:58.

body, sinking in those hawks, just above the belt line, Paddy Barnes.

:10:59.:11:03.

Now, Samuel Carmona Heredia being drawn into a flat-footed exchange.

:11:04.:11:09.

Terrific shots to the body once again from Paddy Barnes. I think

:11:10.:11:14.

Barnes is getting the better of the exchanges, throwing threes and

:11:15.:11:16.

fours. Better work from the Irishman. Cracking left hook around

:11:17.:11:24.

the corner. This is an absolute firefight right on top of the logo

:11:25.:11:29.

on centre ring. Barnes retreating to the ropes but still space in the

:11:30.:11:34.

ring. Both boxers trading blows, trying to type up tightly to repel

:11:35.:11:40.

the counters of their opponents. Both have a similar style but if you

:11:41.:11:44.

look at Samuel Carmona Heredia, his defence is a little more leaky than

:11:45.:11:48.

Barnes. Barnes has his elbows tucked in. He was also doing threes and

:11:49.:11:55.

fours rather than the single shots. Samuel Carmona Heredia trying to get

:11:56.:12:01.

through with the heavier punches. Samuel Carmona Heredia qualified for

:12:02.:12:05.

this, his first appearance in the Olympic Games. He finished second

:12:06.:12:10.

place in the global Olympic qualification tournament. Paddy

:12:11.:12:13.

Barnes, what seemed like an age ago, qualified, the number one boxer in

:12:14.:12:18.

the fifth season of world Series boxing.

:12:19.:12:26.

He has had his status as an Olympian secured for the third time for a

:12:27.:12:33.

very long time. He hasn't competed in global or Continental tournaments

:12:34.:12:38.

since the Commonwealth Games in 2014, where he picked up his second

:12:39.:12:43.

title. Her years in the opening bout of his Olympic 2016 campaign in a

:12:44.:12:48.

really hard-fought encounter against Samuel Carmona Heredia. Good left

:12:49.:12:52.

hook from the inside from the man in red. Bringing back some punches from

:12:53.:12:55.

Barnes but many of them were blocked. Samuel Carmona Heredia

:12:56.:12:59.

needing a bit more head movement here. He has got to move his head.

:13:00.:13:07.

He was waiting for the referee to say something then, makes a mistake

:13:08.:13:10.

and Samuel Carmona Heredia lands his shot. The opening round was split,

:13:11.:13:19.

two judges favouring the work of Samuel Carmona Heredia, judge C

:13:20.:13:22.

favouring Barnes. How will they score this second round? Sucking in

:13:23.:13:30.

the air. Paddy Barnes feeling it a little bit but he put a lot of work

:13:31.:13:35.

in here. Good right hand from Barnes, and a good jab from Samuel

:13:36.:13:41.

Carmona Heredia. Barnes gritting his teeth, digging in deep. Twos and

:13:42.:13:45.

threes and I think he has done the better work in that round. It is all

:13:46.:13:54.

square across all three cards because Judges A and B favour Barnes

:13:55.:14:00.

in this round and judge C favoured Samuel Carmona Heredia. A reverse of

:14:01.:14:04.

the first round. It is tied, one round appease. Bath apiece.

:14:05.:14:12.

Who will progress through to the final eight of the men's 49

:14:13.:14:19.

kilograms light flyweight tournament? It will all come down to

:14:20.:14:22.

this three minutes. Everything to be laid on the line by these two

:14:23.:14:27.

boxers. Paddy Barnes breezing through an open mouth but he comes

:14:28.:14:30.

on the front foot and takes it to his man. Both boxers trying to find

:14:31.:14:36.

an opening between the defence is being put up. That is goodbye

:14:37.:14:43.

Barnes. In this situation, you have to try to make you opponent missed

:14:44.:14:47.

the target. You need head movement here and there, show the judges you

:14:48.:14:54.

are prepared to use those defensive skills. That bobbing and weaving and

:14:55.:14:59.

slipping and then returning fire with two and three shots. Very

:15:00.:15:03.

important to try to make your opponent missed with some good

:15:04.:15:04.

defensive work. Cracking right hook. Good right hook

:15:05.:15:22.

in response from Carmona. All action stuff here in the space of the

:15:23.:15:30.

boxing ring. They will be aware of how close this contest is which is

:15:31.:15:33.

why they are letting it all hang out in pursuit of a place in the final

:15:34.:15:40.

eight of the men's quarterfinal. This is a contest that is going to

:15:41.:15:45.

take a lot of energy out of both of these boxes, whoever goes through.

:15:46.:15:50.

You don't want to be boxing like this every time. Very difficult at

:15:51.:15:53.

this pace and you have to be extremely fit. This is what is

:15:54.:15:58.

required because this bout is as close as could be. There is parity

:15:59.:16:04.

across the board. The judges can't separate the two, somebody needs a

:16:05.:16:09.

grandstand finish here. Is that Nick on the right eye after Barnes? Does

:16:10.:16:14.

not appear to be peaking but there is a graze of some description. Good

:16:15.:16:19.

left hook from Carmona, good left hook from Barnes in response. Barnes

:16:20.:16:24.

has to push his opponent back a little bit more. Carmona keeps

:16:25.:16:28.

coming forward. Oh, that is a good right hand from Barnes. Just

:16:29.:16:34.

momentarily, Carmona's boxing stance betrayed him but he got back into it

:16:35.:16:39.

and they are continuing to let their hands go freely. The final 30

:16:40.:16:46.

seconds of what been a pulsating 49 kilograms light flyweight encounter.

:16:47.:16:51.

Some of those judges like to see the opponent being pushed back, they

:16:52.:16:54.

like to see the box on the front foot. Carmona, he knows it as well

:16:55.:16:58.

which is why he keeps coming forward. Give and take, NIP and tax

:16:59.:17:09.

-- nip and tuck. Both of these men have given absolutely everything in

:17:10.:17:13.

pursuit of a place in the quarterfinals in the men's 49

:17:14.:17:18.

kilograms light flyweight division. What an absolutely riveting contest

:17:19.:17:21.

we have witnessed. It was all square. One round of peace, 19

:17:22.:17:25.

points apiece going into the third and final round. Carmona has the

:17:26.:17:35.

energy to celebrate, Barnes has his gloves taken. This contest could

:17:36.:17:42.

come down to the last punch. Lovely punch from Barnes, but Carmona

:17:43.:17:48.

landed some belters. Right at the end of the contest, some good

:17:49.:17:52.

punches. Barnes rattled his opponent time and again in that last round,

:17:53.:17:56.

it is very close. This could go either way. Which way will it go? A

:17:57.:18:07.

thrilling nine minutes of action we've just witnessed, nonstop

:18:08.:18:11.

punching from both of these boxers. Nervous moments now. Prior to this

:18:12.:18:18.

announcement, both of these boxers must feel as though the standing

:18:19.:18:22.

beneath an emotional guillotine. Who will have their hand raised, and

:18:23.:18:30.

will progress to the final late? -- final eight? Barnes gesticulating

:18:31.:18:36.

its close, we don't know how close it is.

:18:37.:18:41.

Carmona Heredia! It is Carmona, are courtesy of a split decision, in a

:18:42.:19:05.

terrifically, keenly contested contest. He eliminates the

:19:06.:19:10.

tournament number four seed, and Ireland's flag bearer, Paddy Barnes.

:19:11.:19:18.

His dream of an impact gold has been extinguished at his first outing in

:19:19.:19:22.

Rio 2016. Carmona goes through to the final late, Paddy Barnes

:19:23.:19:28.

eliminated in a contest that was as close as could be. 2-1 in favour of

:19:29.:19:34.

the Spaniard. Paddy Barnes eliminated in this, his third

:19:35.:19:38.

Olympic Games, at the second preliminary round stage.

:19:39.:19:43.

Ireland's Talisman has gone. That is a sore one. A real surprise for the

:19:44.:19:52.

man who carried the standard into the opening ceremony, the trickle,

:19:53.:19:56.

the other night. You could see the surprise from some of his

:19:57.:20:01.

supporters. The boy from Belfast is out. I'm sure there's been better

:20:02.:20:06.

news for Ireland at least down at the rowing. I know you're in capture

:20:07.:20:13.

mode, what is going on? About an hour or so ago, the wind has got up

:20:14.:20:19.

a bit so conditions are a little bit more testing and several British

:20:20.:20:21.

voter been on the water over the course of the last 75 minutes or so.

:20:22.:20:26.

Let's start with the men's double sculls which was disappointing a

:20:27.:20:29.

couple of days ago which forced them into a repechage about half an hour

:20:30.:20:33.

or so ago, and this is how they got on.

:20:34.:20:38.

Great Britain and Serbia starting to break away from Cuba and Bulgaria.

:20:39.:20:47.

Cuba have gone out well, they're managing to hold on. To be honest, I

:20:48.:20:55.

think a lot of it for the next two or three minutes will determine how

:20:56.:20:59.

the British guys are doing. I'd like to give them the confidence they

:21:00.:21:03.

will progress to the semifinal. And they need to start clawing back the

:21:04.:21:08.

Serbians because they wouldn't have been troubled by them earlier in the

:21:09.:21:12.

season. They might not be the best form but they can regain their form

:21:13.:21:16.

in this race. Last time Serbia and Great Britain came head-to-head was

:21:17.:21:24.

at the last World Regatta. Serbia finished six and Britain finished

:21:25.:21:26.

second. They are turning the tables here. This is in the mid-part of the

:21:27.:21:32.

competition but nonetheless it is important to qualify strongly for

:21:33.:21:36.

the best lane you can possibly get in the semifinal. The Serbians are

:21:37.:21:44.

starting to inch out, which is not an encouraging thing because this is

:21:45.:21:49.

one of the crew is challenging to get into the final. Our boys have

:21:50.:21:55.

the pedigree, as you said, in the last World Cup, to dominate these

:21:56.:22:03.

lads. So, Serbia in lane number three. We had now... They are

:22:04.:22:14.

starting to hold and head back now. So, this repechage of the men's

:22:15.:22:18.

double sculls, the British at the halfway mark, they were comfortably

:22:19.:22:23.

in second away from Cuba, it is all about getting positions for the

:22:24.:22:28.

semifinals. Three boats go through. Cuba in one, Bulgaria into, Serbia

:22:29.:22:34.

in three, Great Britain now coming up level, and we'd expect the

:22:35.:22:39.

British double sculls of John Collins and Jonathan Walton to ease

:22:40.:22:46.

through the here. On paper, they have the better pedigree. Serbia was

:22:47.:22:53.

sixth at the World Cup, and Alterman Collins was second. They finished

:22:54.:22:55.

the Olympia before they came here on the highest note they could possibly

:22:56.:23:06.

could do. They are going to get Serbia. Can Cuba hold off Bulgaria?

:23:07.:23:13.

I hope they do because they shouldn't be qualifying for the

:23:14.:23:18.

semifinal. It's going to come down to a sprint finish, and that sprint

:23:19.:23:25.

finish might catch the Serbians. Our boys are now controlling it. And

:23:26.:23:30.

they should take this confidence the semi. Bulgaria coming back card

:23:31.:23:34.

against Cuba. The British and know they have this. Here come Bulgaria,

:23:35.:23:40.

they are coming like a rocket through the field. They are now

:23:41.:23:44.

through Cuba and they are now attacking Serbia. Coming towards the

:23:45.:23:48.

last couple of strokes of this repechage comfortably done, well

:23:49.:23:52.

done Great Britain, Jonathan Walton and Collins, and it is a photo

:23:53.:24:00.

finish between Bulgarian Serbia. They are through to the semifinal.

:24:01.:24:08.

What is the overriding emotion after that much improved performance?

:24:09.:24:14.

We're just pleased we secured that place and the all-important

:24:15.:24:17.

semifinal. And it is doing what we do now tomorrow and putting in

:24:18.:24:21.

another good performance and trying to get into that final. How do you

:24:22.:24:25.

rationalise the performance of a couple of days ago? We knew we'd

:24:26.:24:31.

made a few mistakes. And the middle part of the race, where we worked

:24:32.:24:35.

very well together, we didn't really get onto anything, just lost a lot

:24:36.:24:38.

of momentum, where is out there today, even though it was still

:24:39.:24:42.

popping and a little bit of a challenge, it was a lot more relaxed

:24:43.:24:47.

and calm, and sticking to what we do well and what we have done over the

:24:48.:24:51.

last few weeks. Steve Redgrave is here as ever. How impressed were you

:24:52.:24:56.

by the way they recovered from what was a disappointing performance 48

:24:57.:25:00.

hours ago? I wasn't impressed with their first heat. The conditions

:25:01.:25:04.

they had, they had to attack the first 500, get into their rhythm.

:25:05.:25:15.

They got caught out. Juergen was disappointed, he wouldn't talk to me

:25:16.:25:19.

about it, he closed his eyes, and trotted off. That was a much better

:25:20.:25:23.

performance. Coming into the Regatta, they have the outside

:25:24.:25:27.

chance of a medal. They are moving back towards it. It is a lot of

:25:28.:25:33.

pressure because you have the heat waiting around yesterday for the

:25:34.:25:38.

non-racist, then racing again, and then a semifinal tomorrow. It is

:25:39.:25:41.

tough but they're going in the right direction. Talking about the medals,

:25:42.:25:45.

Matthew Pinsent has four. There are two of the aid that are going for

:25:46.:25:50.

three gold medals here. Pete Reed and Andrew Hodge. I spoke to them

:25:51.:25:54.

after their very impressive performance by the men's eight

:25:55.:25:57.

earlier today. They are eyeing up a gold medal, there's going to be a

:25:58.:26:01.

fantastic showdown with the Dutch and German is at the weekend. Andrew

:26:02.:26:09.

Hodge wasn't giving too much away when I asked him about how impressed

:26:10.:26:11.

he'd been by their performance earlier on. It was fine. No more

:26:12.:26:21.

than that? Net-mac, we did what we needed to do today. Could you be a

:26:22.:26:27.

little bit more upbeat than that? I felt strong, really strong. I know

:26:28.:26:30.

the crew did as well. I know there's more to come, so I think there will

:26:31.:26:34.

be people at home cheering and celebrating already. Don't celebrate

:26:35.:26:39.

already. The Germans are still the favourites and the Dutch will come

:26:40.:26:44.

back as well. We've seen from Regattas that things change during

:26:45.:26:49.

the week. I can be confident inside. But it isn't done yet. The next

:26:50.:26:55.

final will be tight, close and fears. The thing about heaps, you

:26:56.:27:00.

can put down markers. Everyone in the boat could see the Dutch in

:27:01.:27:04.

their slipstream. That is a huge point chalked up, isn't it? Yes,

:27:05.:27:09.

we've been working hard these last few months and we have a lot to turn

:27:10.:27:13.

around from where we left the World Cup series. We finished off with a

:27:14.:27:17.

good race, and we are confident we had more. We saw a glimmer of what

:27:18.:27:22.

we could have. As veterans of the Olympic movement, how is the Olympic

:27:23.:27:26.

experience for you here? You can say old! It really is amazing. There's a

:27:27.:27:32.

lot in the press back home about water quality and muggings and all

:27:33.:27:38.

sorts of horrible things in Rio but don't believe it. We are careful and

:27:39.:27:42.

sensible but we are here on business but we're having a good time. It is

:27:43.:27:47.

a wonderful city. The course, it is sometimes blowy which we saw

:27:48.:27:52.

yesterday, but it is an outdoor sport. We are fighters and it is a

:27:53.:27:56.

really good experience. And I cannot wait to race in the final and I am

:27:57.:28:02.

glad we made it without repechage. It is a great city and we are

:28:03.:28:06.

enjoying it. Dare you talk about, both of you, winning a third gold

:28:07.:28:13.

medal? Absolutely not! This is what we've done the whole time we are

:28:14.:28:19.

here. We are fighters, we're here to literally to get our oars out. It is

:28:20.:28:24.

brutal stuff out there. As soon as you start thinking about winning and

:28:25.:28:27.

celebrating, you've lost the energy to fight. You've lost the will and

:28:28.:28:32.

desire. So, no, we have a few more sessions to go and each of those is

:28:33.:28:39.

warming up for that last fight. I think we've discussed it before,

:28:40.:28:44.

this is our first Olympics, we are not veterans coming into something.

:28:45.:28:48.

We are hungry for our first Olympic title, which is a healthy position

:28:49.:28:52.

to come into. I know we have more wrinkles but we still have the

:28:53.:28:56.

desire inside burning. They are talking a good game, and they? The

:28:57.:29:02.

Germans also won their heat, looked very impressive as well as the

:29:03.:29:05.

Brits, but the Germans refuse to give any interviews at all. They

:29:06.:29:08.

said they would speak afterwards they are bringing their game face

:29:09.:29:12.

on. You did very well to get any words out of Andy. He didn't want to

:29:13.:29:17.

speak. I thought he was going to be monosyllabic but he opened up

:29:18.:29:20.

towards the end. Some people were very happy to speak. Women's after

:29:21.:29:25.

their heat today when they were hugely impressive in winning it.

:29:26.:29:29.

Three of them came up to chat to us. They were grinning like Cheshire

:29:30.:29:34.

cats. Yes, I think we're all pretty happy

:29:35.:29:38.

with the result. We went out there to win today. We had a crew chat,

:29:39.:29:44.

and that was the mission, no matter what happened, we are putting our

:29:45.:29:48.

boughs ahead of everyone else's. And, for me, it felt like we

:29:49.:29:52.

epitomise that through the course. We were not worried that we were

:29:53.:29:56.

behind off the start, we knew the other girls were going to put in a

:29:57.:30:00.

lot of work into take that much distance in such a short period of

:30:01.:30:04.

time and we held our heads. I am so proud of the way that we have kind

:30:05.:30:11.

of come out here with a bit of a bang. And we've set ourselves up for

:30:12.:30:12.

Saturday. there was no showboating at the end.

:30:13.:30:22.

We just did our thing and stayed up there. We listened to the others are

:30:23.:30:28.

weak and kept long and strong and it is all we needed to do. We don't

:30:29.:30:33.

need to show all our cards today. As the whitest towel in the middle...

:30:34.:30:37.

-- whitest owl... How does it feel? The eight

:30:38.:30:55.

girls are incredible and I know that so many girls have worked so hard to

:30:56.:31:00.

make us be able to go out there and even just win here at the Olympics,

:31:01.:31:05.

since 1997, this project has been coming and coming and it looks like

:31:06.:31:10.

it is coming to fruition now but it is the efforts of everyone, the

:31:11.:31:14.

girls at home now who have not made it through, it has been such a

:31:15.:31:18.

fight. It feel such privileged but all of us to be out here, we can do

:31:19.:31:24.

nothing but have fun and deliver our best. You mentioned the word fun,

:31:25.:31:27.

your faces were all wreathed in smiles when you came by because it

:31:28.:31:32.

was a job well done. You do seem to be having a really good time and

:31:33.:31:35.

this seems to be a really good bond between you all? Why not? It is

:31:36.:31:42.

sport and sport is supposed to be a great thing to do and it is

:31:43.:31:45.

something we are fortunate to be good at and able to do pretty much

:31:46.:31:51.

all day, every day. For me, I am into the end of it and it makes me

:31:52.:31:56.

realise, it will be so hard to retire because it is such a great

:31:57.:31:59.

thing to do and to be able to do it with amazing people, I can't help

:32:00.:32:02.

but be really happy about that. A couple of great answers there from

:32:03.:32:13.

Fran Hatton, the joy of being a sports person but also the black

:32:14.:32:16.

hole that can sometimes appear when you hang up your racquet or whatever

:32:17.:32:22.

it might be. It is very tough and everyone told me I would find it

:32:23.:32:27.

really tough after 25 years in the sport, but I stepped straight down

:32:28.:32:31.

into the Olympic bid and when to 12 so I had another so many years of

:32:32.:32:38.

that Olympic dream. But I did struggle for a few years after, it

:32:39.:32:43.

is a tough process. Let's hope Fran heads into that tunnel with a gold

:32:44.:32:47.

medal around her neck. Coming up shortly, the British pair in the

:32:48.:32:51.

men's lightweight double sculls but Hazell alluded to it earlier on,

:32:52.:32:56.

Paddy Barnes beaten in the boxing with a Titanic duel, obviously

:32:57.:33:03.

hugely disappointing. But these are the O'Donovan Brothers beating the

:33:04.:33:09.

Italians, a real dogfight to the line and that was an impressive

:33:10.:33:14.

performance. Absolutely, they have had some good results but they have

:33:15.:33:18.

been inconsistent. It is good to see them carrying them through to the

:33:19.:33:24.

semifinals. They have a chance to do something very big and special. A

:33:25.:33:29.

Northern Irish men in the British pair together with Will Fletcher and

:33:30.:33:38.

what are their prospects? Last year's will Championships was a very

:33:39.:33:42.

good results. A bit like the women's double, they haven't had a great

:33:43.:33:47.

season but a bit better than the lightweight women's. They had been

:33:48.:33:52.

just off the mark. They need to get a good start so their confidence can

:33:53.:33:56.

get there. One of the many Brazilian flags adorning the grandstand at the

:33:57.:34:03.

Lego stadium. The sun is warm and now, a glorious afternoon. Good

:34:04.:34:10.

afternoon to James Cracknell and Garry Herbert. Thank you. We have

:34:11.:34:16.

Brazil in lane number one and something for the home crowd of the

:34:17.:34:22.

men's lightweight double sculls. In amongst it all, Great Britain's Will

:34:23.:34:26.

Fletcher and Richard Chambers, a high-quality field. South African in

:34:27.:34:37.

lane number five, Thompson and Smith. Olympic champions. Four years

:34:38.:34:43.

ago, they were in the light coxless four and they are now in a new

:34:44.:34:45.

event, a new category. They are away, what can we do for

:34:46.:34:58.

the British crew of Will Fletcher and Richard Chambers? They were

:34:59.:35:03.

fifth two times out at the World Cup this year, really disappointing

:35:04.:35:06.

given they were silver-medallists. They came away with a silver medal

:35:07.:35:12.

behind France at the European Championships last year. These guys

:35:13.:35:18.

can step on, of the five, two places are available, fighting for the

:35:19.:35:25.

semifinals. You mentioned the South Africans in the coxless four, they

:35:26.:35:29.

won the will Championships and they are the world record holders, so

:35:30.:35:33.

they may not have had the best season but they have the pedigree

:35:34.:35:38.

and the speed. You would expect them to get one of the two qualifying

:35:39.:35:45.

spots. Fletcher and Chambers, ahead by one length. The British crew

:35:46.:35:50.

laying the gauntlet down early. It is really interesting to see the

:35:51.:35:53.

tactics of all of this, because you have to back yourself 100%, to go

:35:54.:36:00.

out and have a length at 250. You have to back your legs and each

:36:01.:36:03.

other and yourselves psychologically. We have talked

:36:04.:36:10.

about what they are going to do in the first 40 metres, they don't want

:36:11.:36:13.

to shut everyone else out of the race. It is not just about

:36:14.:36:18.

qualifying, if they win this heat, they will get a better semifinal

:36:19.:36:23.

draw, in an event that is so closely matched, the better you do in your

:36:24.:36:29.

race, the better semi you have and a better chance of a medal. The South

:36:30.:36:36.

Africans will know that as well. Three leading cruise, Great Britain,

:36:37.:36:42.

China and South Africa, breaking away from Brazil, Switzerland. Five

:36:43.:36:50.

boats, only two qualification spots as we go alongside. China Son and

:36:51.:36:53.

Wang. Stretching it out now and being

:36:54.:37:11.

stretched out to the right. Will Fletcher and Richard Chambers. What

:37:12.:37:14.

they have done really well is put themselves well out of the

:37:15.:37:18.

peripheral vision of the South Africans so they are not only

:37:19.:37:20.

leading but the South Africans have to turn around if they want to see

:37:21.:37:24.

where they are. They cannot glance to their right to see where the

:37:25.:37:29.

British are. The South Africans will have to make the decision to either

:37:30.:37:33.

chase them down or hold their second place and fight the battle another

:37:34.:37:38.

day. Frandsen having already shown their style comfortably winning

:37:39.:37:43.

their heats, the world champions from last year, undefeated. The

:37:44.:37:52.

South Africans have just started to inch back, definitely holding the

:37:53.:37:57.

British and starting to inch back so they may have given up hopes from

:37:58.:38:02.

qualifying first from the heat but they have another 1000 metres to do

:38:03.:38:08.

it. This is where we will see if the Britons are front row race or rowing

:38:09.:38:10.

and even spirited race. It is time to look like a matchplay

:38:11.:38:23.

race between Great Britain and South Africa. Thompson and Smith in the

:38:24.:38:28.

night double closest to us. Just inching back ominously, stroke for

:38:29.:38:33.

stroke, coming right back on the British double led by Richard

:38:34.:38:38.

Chambers and Will Fletcher. South Africa were fourth in the will

:38:39.:38:44.

Championships last year. Different story, different year. The Brits

:38:45.:38:51.

have responded. I saw Will Fletcher do a call and they responded and

:38:52.:38:55.

held the South African Porsche and they know where they want to qualify

:38:56.:38:59.

and they are prepared to put a little bit more into it than just

:39:00.:39:02.

qualifying and that makes absolute sense because we have seen in the

:39:03.:39:06.

first few days, the weather plays a massive part. You will get a better

:39:07.:39:14.

lame if you qualify better. The South Africans are coming right back

:39:15.:39:19.

in there. They have the first of three World Cup regattas earlier in

:39:20.:39:23.

the season, so plenty of speed. They are coming up level to Great Britain

:39:24.:39:27.

and now they are starting to go through. The British Fletcher and

:39:28.:39:32.

Chambers, it is about keeping length, keeping their heads up. They

:39:33.:39:37.

know they have qualified through to the semifinal but now it is about

:39:38.:39:41.

lot allowing South Africa, as we go to 1500 metres, for the South

:39:42.:39:46.

Africans to skull away from them. Absolutely right. I saw Thompson

:39:47.:39:54.

make a call because what they want to do is put a nail in the coffin.

:39:55.:40:03.

If they can crush out any ambitions and self belief the British have,

:40:04.:40:06.

they will want to do that in the heat. They have been let down and

:40:07.:40:13.

they have rode through and if I was then, I would put a length into them

:40:14.:40:19.

and make the British think. The last 500 metres or so, South Africa have

:40:20.:40:25.

taken a length, two length out of Great Britain, Fletcher and chambers

:40:26.:40:28.

now hanging on. We through the 250-metre mark. They have taken the

:40:29.:40:39.

600 metres, taken two length out. It is up to the Brits know to take

:40:40.:40:42.

confidence from the speed they showed in the first half and work it

:40:43.:40:48.

out to get that speed and efficiency so they can have a quick 500 as

:40:49.:40:53.

well. Thompson and Smith continued to slip away from Fletcher and

:40:54.:40:58.

chambers. Really impressive stuff from the South Africans. Great

:40:59.:41:03.

Britain still in qualification spot. Of the five including China, Brazil

:41:04.:41:07.

and Switzerland, it is Great Britain and South Africa that would qualify

:41:08.:41:13.

through to the semifinal. But it is the way this qualification has

:41:14.:41:17.

unfolded. South Africa have been very impressive in the second half

:41:18.:41:23.

of the race. The first half was all about Great Britain and the second

:41:24.:41:28.

half was the all about South Africa and that is the most important part

:41:29.:41:30.

of the race for obvious reasons. Would you be happy you were through,

:41:31.:41:40.

Steve or would you think they got beaten a bit too easily?

:41:41.:41:48.

They will be a bit disappointed. The South Africans were just moving

:41:49.:41:51.

their boat better, at a lower rate of striking.

:41:52.:41:56.

They will not be happy with that but they go through to the next stage.

:41:57.:42:04.

In the William's lightweight double sculls, cat Copeland, gold-medallist

:42:05.:42:07.

four years ago, partners with Charlotte tailor, this was not how

:42:08.:42:10.

they anticipated things turning out. It is China, Denmark, United States,

:42:11.:42:22.

Great Britain and Italy. Disappointing season continuing. The

:42:23.:42:40.

overlap into the heats for the women's double sculls lightweight

:42:41.:42:44.

for Great Britain and Katherine Copeland and Charlotte Taylor,

:42:45.:42:49.

silver-medallists at the World Championships. They need to find

:42:50.:42:54.

something to get the speed going. At the moment, China looking very

:42:55.:43:03.

strong. Thomas and Russ Musson, try as they do, not quite coming up

:43:04.:43:11.

level. 250 ad, 25 strokes. One last opportunity to have a go and

:43:12.:43:15.

remember, it is all about the Olympic Games, all about

:43:16.:43:20.

qualification. Then you have to try to qualify as high as you can, so

:43:21.:43:28.

that is why they will keep on it. Every position you have,...

:43:29.:43:42.

Inside the last 100 metres, China continued to hold off Thomas and

:43:43.:43:52.

Rasmussen from Denmark. Those two double sculls opened up a

:43:53.:43:56.

significant gap over the United States. Britons in the back of the

:43:57.:44:06.

field in a fight with the Italians. United States getting third and

:44:07.:44:11.

Italy getting fourth and Great Britain get disappointment. A

:44:12.:44:15.

disappointing season through 2016 and a disappointing opener at the

:44:16.:44:16.

2016 Olympic Games. They are two of the most a bully and

:44:17.:44:23.

people you will ever meet. Now, Glover and Stanning, the

:44:24.:44:45.

Olympic champions from 2012. Let's go back to Gary.

:44:46.:44:51.

If 2012 was all about Katherine Grainger and 2016 is all about

:44:52.:44:56.

Heather and Helen. Here they are, they are in lane number five, they

:44:57.:45:01.

open their 2016 Olympic account here in the first heat of the women's

:45:02.:45:05.

coxless pair. Denmark and one, Germany and two, Netherlands in

:45:06.:45:12.

four, Great Britain in lane number five. Undefeated in this Olympiad,

:45:13.:45:17.

the British crew, so all of these crews over the last four years and

:45:18.:45:22.

before that, they've come up against them, they've been beaten

:45:23.:45:27.

convincingly. So, for Glover and Stanning, this is a psychological

:45:28.:45:30.

game and they are motivated like I've never seen them before. They

:45:31.:45:39.

sat there and were itching to get out there. Now their dominance, this

:45:40.:45:50.

is where they want to be. They can go straight from the heat to the

:45:51.:45:54.

semifinal, and crush some of the dreams of the other people. The

:45:55.:45:59.

challengers could be Denmark. They have raced over the year to know

:46:00.:46:03.

they would have to have a really bad race for that to be a challenge. Let

:46:04.:46:09.

alone a defeat. Into the closing stages of the first 500 metres, some

:46:10.:46:17.

pressure from Denmark. But isn't like they won't take that on board.

:46:18.:46:22.

They are so supremely confident, and they've never been challenged,

:46:23.:46:26.

they've always raced hard from the front. This is a crew that will have

:46:27.:46:32.

a perfect race plan. First 500 that is what they're doing right now,

:46:33.:46:36.

getting into the race. They are being led by Denmark, and expect the

:46:37.:46:43.

pair of Glover and Stanning to get into their rhythm. The Danish must

:46:44.:46:49.

be thinking, hello, this is all right, this is going quickly but it

:46:50.:46:54.

is about sustaining that. Watch the British closest to us. And Germany

:46:55.:47:00.

in lane number two they will want to have something to say about this but

:47:01.:47:05.

they've already been dropped. Nobody has come back length on the British

:47:06.:47:17.

pair over the of this combination. What the key thing is, Heather and

:47:18.:47:20.

Helen are building themselves up because they know their quality over

:47:21.:47:23.

the last four years of being unbeaten, they are thinking about

:47:24.:47:25.

the final, where is especially Germany and Denmark are thinking,

:47:26.:47:29.

avoid the repechage. They are doing a different race. The British are

:47:30.:47:35.

doing an aide to be steady. Denmark are clearing out, trying to make the

:47:36.:47:41.

Netherlands and Canada in relevant. They need to make sure they do that

:47:42.:47:45.

early on. I don't think they will be racing the British, they are just

:47:46.:47:50.

making sure they qualify nice and easy for the semis. For the British,

:47:51.:47:54.

they are setting themselves up for a good run. So, Denmark go through the

:47:55.:47:59.

halfway mark. They are leading the British, the first time the British

:48:00.:48:07.

have been led since London 2012. So dominant have they been in the

:48:08.:48:12.

second 500, finding their speed. So the Danish up in lane number one,

:48:13.:48:19.

fourth in the world championships last year, the event in which

:48:20.:48:23.

Britain were first, they lead by half a length. This is a sensational

:48:24.:48:26.

first 100 metres in the opening heat of the women's pairs. Glover and

:48:27.:48:29.

Stanning are being led by half a length. Here is a mark of a true

:48:30.:48:34.

champions. They are the defending Olympic champions, undefeated

:48:35.:48:38.

through this part Olympiad. Will they let that creep in or will they

:48:39.:48:43.

think, stick to our race plan? They will stick to their race plan and

:48:44.:48:48.

they've raced these days enough to know that they will have to have put

:48:49.:48:53.

in a huge amount in the first half so they won't change their race

:48:54.:48:58.

plan. The one thing that concerns me is their racing three beats higher

:48:59.:49:03.

than the Danish, taking three strokes more minute, so effectively

:49:04.:49:08.

they're going the same speed, so they're not growing as efficiently

:49:09.:49:12.

as the Danish but we don't know how much power the Danish are putting

:49:13.:49:17.

in. They are doing almost 1500 metre race to make sure they clear out but

:49:18.:49:21.

I'd be surprised... I thought it would be the other way round. In the

:49:22.:49:28.

midst of this third 500 metres, Glover and Stanning are in uncharted

:49:29.:49:32.

tyre trade. They've never been led in the middle of the third 500 in

:49:33.:49:39.

recent years. This is a spectacular performance so far for Denmark.

:49:40.:49:47.

Remember, we have Germany, Canada, Netherlands. It has become a two

:49:48.:49:50.

boat race right now as we go right board with Glover to the right,

:49:51.:49:59.

Heather Stanning not looking as dynamic around the front end here.

:50:00.:50:04.

What I was going to say is that if the Brits win from this position, it

:50:05.:50:10.

would be their reputation that will have beaten the Danish, rather than

:50:11.:50:15.

them being faster than the Danish. The Danish are underrated, they are

:50:16.:50:19.

ahead in the race. If they lose from this position, it is what the damage

:50:20.:50:24.

the Brits have done over the last few years. They are going by their

:50:25.:50:31.

reputation as much as the people. So, the Danish are still holding. If

:50:32.:50:36.

I was in the bow seat of this power, I would be saying now, 35 strokes.

:50:37.:50:42.

Its 350 metres out and we will beat the defending and reigning Olympic

:50:43.:50:47.

champions, only 35 strokes, and that will be a massive scalp. Don't

:50:48.:50:51.

discount Glover and Stanning in lane five because now they are starting

:50:52.:50:57.

to lengthen out, the power is coming on. A little look right from Heather

:50:58.:51:01.

Stanning, marking territory, but the boughs of the British crew, they are

:51:02.:51:06.

starting to move. Surely, they can have an impact here? The pedigree of

:51:07.:51:11.

this crew as such they should overhaul the crew from Denmark in

:51:12.:51:15.

lane number one. And they are going quicker. At the moment, they are

:51:16.:51:19.

racing five pips higher and not having the impact they should do.

:51:20.:51:23.

They will come through and win it, but this would have been the perfect

:51:24.:51:27.

wake-up call for them. They will win it, they've been woken up. They had

:51:28.:51:34.

the blue lines, they've come through, but they've been made to

:51:35.:51:37.

fight for this victory. This is the first biggest test in the last

:51:38.:51:42.

Olympiad that Glover and Stanning have had and it is on the opening

:51:43.:51:48.

day of their heaps of this 2016 Olympic regatta, and it has taken

:51:49.:51:54.

Denmark, who push hard again. They are coming back! Denmark are not

:51:55.:51:59.

rolling over. And by one foot on the line, Glover and Stanning, just 100

:52:00.:52:05.

out, when we thought Britain had it, Denmark found another turn of speed,

:52:06.:52:10.

up it came again but they ran out of water. Glover and Stanning, well, my

:52:11.:52:16.

gosh, right on the edge. It was. We watched them yesterday and their

:52:17.:52:24.

rhythm was spot-on. It showed about the strokes they've taken. They

:52:25.:52:30.

won't give away any emotions on that, but it'll be interesting to be

:52:31.:52:34.

in the debrief of the British pair of Glover and Stanning.

:52:35.:52:40.

We weren't expecting that! What a race and contest, what drama! Your

:52:41.:52:46.

thoughts? It was a shock, that'll send shock waves through the whole

:52:47.:52:50.

team. I'd have put them in ranking order of the men's four is the best

:52:51.:52:54.

chance of our gold and women's pair is the second but not very much

:52:55.:52:57.

between them. They haven't been beaten to five years. They came very

:52:58.:53:03.

close to getting beaten. They did race at Lucerne, and they didn't

:53:04.:53:10.

come out for one race because of illness. I hope there was no

:53:11.:53:14.

illness. They didn't look right. The rhythm, the rate of striking, they

:53:15.:53:19.

were higher than the Danes. The Danes weren't really a medal

:53:20.:53:22.

contender, so that is a bit of a shock. That is the joy of sport,

:53:23.:53:26.

there's no such thing as a certainty, and we thought Glover and

:53:27.:53:30.

Stanning were a certainty for a gold medal but plenty of food for thought

:53:31.:53:35.

as we move through this regatta. We alluded to the men's four, that's

:53:36.:53:39.

coming up in 20 minutes. One final thing, actually. If I could ask

:53:40.:53:43.

Steve to move that way because we've been saying all along what a

:53:44.:53:47.

fantastic venue hisses. This is the most brilliant setting for a James

:53:48.:53:51.

Bond movie. You can imagine things coming out of the water and that. We

:53:52.:53:58.

reckon the best cameraman in Brazil, Ian, reckons that if we go in on

:53:59.:54:02.

that house over there, isn't that where the fill-in is going to live?

:54:03.:54:09.

And he says, Mr Bond, come to my house.

:54:10.:54:15.

Absolutely, I can see him. Sir Steve Redgrave to take over from Daniel

:54:16.:54:20.

Craig? It's going to happen! Anyway, Helen and Heather, never in doubt,

:54:21.:54:25.

was it? What an almighty jolt to the system that was but they've done it.

:54:26.:54:30.

They still keep their unbeaten record to 37 races, but that was

:54:31.:54:34.

very, very close. About a mile away from the rowing event, is the

:54:35.:54:44.

sailing event. You remember Weymouth and Portland in London's games.

:54:45.:54:51.

Great Britain's sailors for this second medal table to the

:54:52.:54:56.

Australians. Big Ben Ainslie no longer in the team. The man

:54:57.:55:00.

determined to step out from his rather large shadow is Giles Scott.

:55:01.:55:06.

And he is very much the man to beat. He's a four-time world champion. He

:55:07.:55:10.

is one of the most dominant sportsmen in the right now.

:55:11.:55:17.

Giles Scott in a sentence. Easy-going, I'd like to think. Even

:55:18.:55:31.

though I am a sportsmen. I'd think you'd think anything much of me,

:55:32.:55:32.

really. For me, it began at the sailing club

:55:33.:55:44.

when I was probably about five or six. My parents took me and my

:55:45.:55:49.

brothers to graph for beginners course to keep us out of trouble.

:55:50.:55:52.

All I wanted to do was get in a boat to try to make it go fast one way

:55:53.:55:56.

and then fast the other way. These used way to describe it is that it

:55:57.:56:00.

is the men's heavyweight class and to say that you need to be 90-105

:56:01.:56:07.

kilos, it is incredibly technically demanding. It is a fiddly boat, it

:56:08.:56:13.

is twofold, really. It is a physical battle at a technical battle as

:56:14.:56:19.

well. When you compete on your own, there is no one to hide behind.

:56:20.:56:26.

There is a little bit more pressure that comes along with it. The crowds

:56:27.:56:31.

are about to cheer now because Ben Ainslie wins his fourth Olympic

:56:32.:56:34.

gold! He is the greatest sailing Olympian in the history of the

:56:35.:56:39.

games. The media will, of course, pick up on the fact that you're

:56:40.:56:43.

sailing in the same class as Ben Ainslie. Do you feel like you're

:56:44.:56:48.

ploughing your own furrow or following in his footsteps? There's

:56:49.:56:52.

been a huge change in the garden I'd like to think I'm following my own

:56:53.:56:56.

pathway, it just happens that the man that has come before me was

:56:57.:57:01.

then. Not qualifying for London, sitting and watching the racing

:57:02.:57:04.

going on, that wasn't the easiest thing for me to do but I am glad I

:57:05.:57:07.

stuck around and put myself through it. Highlights have been winning

:57:08.:57:16.

major championships, winning Olympic test events, winning world

:57:17.:57:21.

Championships, European Championships, beating people like

:57:22.:57:29.

Ben Ainslie. I think if he asks anyone of my competitors, they'd be

:57:30.:57:32.

happy enough to say they want to go into the Olympics with a string of

:57:33.:57:37.

results that I've had. I know what I want from it, and that is gold. One

:57:38.:57:44.

thing I've wanted to achieve for a very long time and I've worked very

:57:45.:57:47.

hard to try to do that. I'm confident in where I'm at. It's not

:57:48.:57:53.

going to be easy. A lot of people have said that it is a sure thing,

:57:54.:57:58.

which it certainly isn't. It is an Olympic Games. It is arguably one of

:57:59.:58:02.

the hardest regatta as you can go and do nothing is given. I certainly

:58:03.:58:10.

think I am more than capable of doing it, but it isn't a given.

:58:11.:58:18.

Giles Scott starts his campaign in the finn class tomorrow. We have

:58:19.:58:22.

four classes out today and we save hallow for the first time in this

:58:23.:58:27.

regatta to two-time gold-medallist Shirley Robertson. There she is, a

:58:28.:58:31.

hallway! Have you got your sea legs in Brazilian waters? I know John was

:58:32.:58:36.

going about his view of the rowing, but look at mine. I have trumped him

:58:37.:58:42.

today. There's a little bit of a breeze, the rowers were concerned

:58:43.:58:47.

about having too much wind, but it can be pretty fickle, the conditions

:58:48.:58:50.

at the British team have spent a lot of time out here in the last few

:58:51.:58:55.

years, haven't they? Even the Brazilians don't even know what's

:58:56.:58:58.

going on here. It's very complicated. You can see, we are on

:58:59.:59:05.

the medal race course now and there is very windy. There is a lot of

:59:06.:59:09.

tired and currents, and every day seems different. I would say, having

:59:10.:59:14.

spent a bit of time in the park, the British are more comfortable here

:59:15.:59:19.

than most. They've invested a lot of energy and resources in analysing

:59:20.:59:24.

the babe. They don't feel too fazed by it. I'm sure they don't. I've got

:59:25.:59:28.

to address this. Putting it delicately, you don't want to be

:59:29.:59:33.

capsizing in Connemara Bay. The super bacteria and that super. Has

:59:34.:59:41.

it been over raked? I won't be stripping off and going for a dip in

:59:42.:59:45.

between races. Today, that won't be on their minds. In terms of water

:59:46.:59:49.

quality today, the tide is coming in, so we are getting fresh water

:59:50.:59:54.

from the Atlantic Ocean. Today, it isn't an issue. If it does rain, if

:59:55.:59:58.

the tide is low and it's coming from the bay, it is a massive Bay, 241

:59:59.:00:04.

square kilometres, and if it starts to rain, and we have seen it rained

:00:05.:00:14.

hard here, it brings a lot of debris out of the bay. Today, all good. All

:00:15.:00:17.

good indeed. I was talking about the medal count four years ago. I just

:00:18.:00:20.

wonder what you feel about the medal chances here? We come into this with

:00:21.:00:26.

three world champions. Two of them in action today.

:00:27.:00:31.

Two years ago when I looked at the squad, I felt desperate about it,

:00:32.:00:38.

but now, that is not the case. They have all raised their game and the

:00:39.:00:41.

team manager said, we have real medal chances in every single class,

:00:42.:00:47.

in all ten events. Today, four of those real chances are starting. The

:00:48.:00:54.

laser class, the man, Nick Thompson, he is a double world champion, the

:00:55.:00:58.

girl, Alison Young, has won the worlds this year. She is on form.

:00:59.:01:02.

Just behind me, you see the windsurfers. Brian it was a bronze

:01:03.:01:10.

medallist in China, she was sick in London. She well be on form. A

:01:11.:01:17.

silver medallist in London, five Olympic Games, bronze in Athens. He

:01:18.:01:21.

has found his form this year. Last year, he was properly struggling but

:01:22.:01:24.

he is one of the favourites this year. As a double Olympic medallist

:01:25.:01:31.

out there, Gold medallist, you look perfectly at ease, but I am feeling

:01:32.:01:34.

queasy watching you Bob up and down on the water. We will catch up with

:01:35.:01:39.

you later. It is champion to see you. Thank you. We are going to get

:01:40.:01:46.

onto dry land now, but we still have a watery theme because there is

:01:47.:01:49.

Adrian Moorhouse. 28 years waiting for someone to join you as a

:01:50.:01:56.

breaststroke champion. It was Adam Peaty last night. Let's reflect on

:01:57.:02:02.

this, Adrian. Have you had a chance to speak to Adam after all of last

:02:03.:02:10.

night's events? No, I think he is having a well earned rest and I am

:02:11.:02:13.

doing the rounds of the media outlets. It has been great to chat

:02:14.:02:18.

all morning about it. Adam has the relay towards the end of the week,

:02:19.:02:23.

so he is still in athlete mode. I'm on the BBC site. He totally smashed

:02:24.:02:29.

his own world record twice in three races. When USS everything that has

:02:30.:02:34.

gone on in the games so far, for you, this has got to be one of the

:02:35.:02:38.

standout performances in any sport so far. -- when you assess. Is it

:02:39.:02:44.

really that good? The interesting thing is we saw three last night.

:02:45.:02:50.

The American in the 400 free, and in the fly and Adam Peaty come here is

:02:51.:02:55.

ours. There were three world number ones, three odds on certain

:02:56.:02:58.

favourites. All destroyed their field. He was one of three last

:02:59.:03:06.

night. In our terms, I only one mind by 100, he won by 1.5 seconds. It

:03:07.:03:13.

was hugely impressive. He has left ahead of the rest of the field and

:03:14.:03:18.

he is that good, it is his first Olympic Games, much more to come.

:03:19.:03:23.

What seemed to impress a lot of people, including me, is even when

:03:24.:03:26.

he came up for his first race, he had that adrenaline flush to his

:03:27.:03:31.

cheeks. He didn't seem to have any nerves at all, there was no fear.

:03:32.:03:35.

What impressed you about his attitude and the way he grasped this

:03:36.:03:40.

opportunity? It is the mark of a true champion. Someone who is at the

:03:41.:03:44.

top of their game physically at the peak of any fitness level. They do

:03:45.:03:52.

it on the day. Mentally, they are able to cope with what is there.

:03:53.:03:56.

Effectively, he took control of what he could control. It was all around

:03:57.:04:00.

him, his bubble. Everything else was just dripping off him. It didn't

:04:01.:04:07.

bother him. He walked out to do a two breaststroke length. He held the

:04:08.:04:15.

world record and all he has to do was deliver. It was more of a

:04:16.:04:18.

technical performance once you get all the noise out of the way, which

:04:19.:04:23.

I think he is brilliant at. He has the medley relay to come later in

:04:24.:04:26.

the week. I'm sure you will get the chance to say hello and welcome to

:04:27.:04:33.

the club. When I saw David Wilkie after I want my medal, he was

:04:34.:04:38.

commentating and said exactly those words, which was nice and pleasant

:04:39.:04:42.

to hear. It is good to have another men's breaststroke swimmer carry on

:04:43.:04:47.

the tradition. It seems to be the stroke of choice in terms of

:04:48.:04:51.

Britain's male champions, in terms of you and Duncan and David Wilkie.

:04:52.:04:58.

This stroke, why is it such a forte with male swimmers? Interesting

:04:59.:05:01.

question. We have asked at a number times. There has to be something

:05:02.:05:06.

about role modelling, something about those guys are out there, Adam

:05:07.:05:10.

Peaty will now be inspiring a lot of people, they will see his race a

:05:11.:05:15.

lot. You might want to emulate him, do breaststroke. Breaststroke chose

:05:16.:05:19.

me, I didn't choose it because it was the only thing I was good at. I

:05:20.:05:26.

was rubbish at backstroke. I ended up being a breaststroke. He happened

:05:27.:05:36.

to do the stroke I was good at. A good man to follow. Then the

:05:37.:05:40.

coaching staff start to understand what world-class breaststroke is,

:05:41.:05:46.

because you see it every day in county championships, all with other

:05:47.:05:50.

British athletes. It is something about technically understanding what

:05:51.:05:57.

it takes to be a good breaststroke swimmer. We have phases of other

:05:58.:06:02.

strokes. Jazz Carlin winning the 400 free silver last night was inspired

:06:03.:06:11.

by Becky. Begu did a similar thing. In Tokyo, it is interesting, I think

:06:12.:06:17.

we get a few more distance freestyle women. I am sure you will certainly

:06:18.:06:23.

enjoy chatting to him. He has another programme to the end of the

:06:24.:06:27.

week and you have a full programme in the afternoon heats and the

:06:28.:06:32.

finals. I was absolutely ecstatic to see it all going on. Right, it has

:06:33.:06:40.

been a busy day and we are going to hop back now to the Deodoro

:06:41.:06:44.

Equestrian Centre because we saw Gemma Tattersall going for Great

:06:45.:06:49.

Britain earlier in the three day event. The Team GB riders came into

:06:50.:06:58.

the next phase. William Fox-Pitt led the individual events. We are about

:06:59.:07:02.

to see William and the rest of the British riders along with the other

:07:03.:07:04.

star names in this second part of the cross-country. Enjoy.

:07:05.:07:11.

France have really set the pace. Their first ride is the only one who

:07:12.:07:18.

run inside the time, and stays on his overnight score of 42

:07:19.:07:25.

individually. Now the very talented rider, part of the bronze medal

:07:26.:07:33.

team. 16th individually, but he had a super dressage test of 83.4.

:07:34.:07:41.

Nicely completed for France. They look to have a very good plan, the

:07:42.:07:43.

French. He was not the first to do that. He

:07:44.:08:12.

was a long way off the step and only just caught the lip. It just didn't

:08:13.:08:21.

happen for him. Now he is going to waste time to get through that

:08:22.:08:27.

combination. He has to settle down and get on with it. Is he in

:08:28.:08:38.

trouble? You could see him thinking, where I going? You pulled right and

:08:39.:08:42.

left and didn't cross his tracks. He is OK. Got with that one. Still with

:08:43.:08:57.

that 20 penalty. He will be looking to get home without any more if you

:08:58.:08:59.

can. He was one who scored well for

:09:00.:09:14.

France in the Europeans last year. 16th individually and helped France

:09:15.:09:19.

to qualify here. He's not jumping easily. Oh, my

:09:20.:09:35.

word. Hail a cab, go for it, anything. The French having a bit of

:09:36.:09:51.

a wobble. Nicolas got them off to a flying start, the only one within

:09:52.:09:57.

the time so far. This is well over a minute of the ultimate time. 20

:09:58.:10:05.

jumping penalties, including in that 50.4. 93.8. A man that many feel is

:10:06.:10:27.

a medallist in the making. This lovely nine-year-old horse.

:10:28.:10:32.

Dressage, 37.6 in second, just 0.6 of a mark behind first place.

:10:33.:10:39.

Australia at the moment, their first rider, Sam Griffiths, and Australia

:10:40.:10:51.

won three gold medals on the trot in 1992, 1996 and in Sydney in 2000.

:10:52.:10:56.

William Fox-Pitt is next out, but it will be a little while because we

:10:57.:11:00.

have one horse that has withdrawn in the running order, the Russian. It

:11:01.:11:07.

will just be a few more moments before William gets underway. The

:11:08.:11:11.

man who is 0.6 of a mark behind him in second place is out on course.

:11:12.:11:22.

What a beautiful shape the horse makes over that fence. His back legs

:11:23.:11:27.

never touched the brush. Didn't even breathe on it.

:11:28.:11:34.

Quite a few people were looking at coming the opposite direction and

:11:35.:11:43.

doing a left bend in between the two fences there. It really was far too

:11:44.:11:53.

risky. It would take a lot of extra energy out of the horse. He would

:11:54.:11:59.

seem to be going at a very decent pace to me. This man is in real

:12:00.:12:13.

earnest here. Great to watch the balance and a little bit of

:12:14.:12:15.

reorganising before this combination. Wastes next to no time.

:12:16.:12:25.

Holds his line. One of the few that didn't actually touch that flag on

:12:26.:12:33.

the left on that corner. Christopher Burton bustles on. How close is he

:12:34.:12:38.

to the time? The horse looks full of running. Here is 47-year-old William

:12:39.:12:43.

Fox-Pitt. He has been the world's number one on many occasions. He has

:12:44.:12:47.

won Olympic medals, major championships. Babington, Burley he

:12:48.:13:02.

has won five times, six times. He sets off on Chilli Morning. This is

:13:03.:13:07.

the second of three disciplines. Dressage burst, then cross-country.

:13:08.:13:12.

Here is his nearest competitor. William led after dressage, this man

:13:13.:13:16.

was second. Christopher Burton of Australia. He has flown round. He

:13:17.:13:20.

could be close to the time that would incur no time penalties. That

:13:21.:13:31.

is 10.15. William Fox-Pitt on this stallion, Chilli Morning. William

:13:32.:13:38.

had a horrible accident, horrible fall in France, he has made an

:13:39.:13:43.

amazing recovery to take up this Olympic challenge. Those first three

:13:44.:13:48.

fences all uphill for William and now the first major combination, his

:13:49.:13:50.

first water fence. There have been quite a few problems

:13:51.:14:03.

there with horses running past that log. It is great for William to get

:14:04.:14:10.

that out of the way. This is the man looking to get under 10.15 and go

:14:11.:14:16.

into the lead. One left. This is a young horse he has always thought so

:14:17.:14:22.

much of will stop you must be very close. He must be on the time, he

:14:23.:14:27.

doesn't want to get it wrong. He is looking but he is not over riding to

:14:28.:14:32.

that finish. He thinks he is inside the time and what a brilliant

:14:33.:14:38.

effort! He is! PS. William want to know this, but if William wants

:14:39.:14:43.

display in the lead, he has to do exactly the same. 21 competitors

:14:44.:14:47.

gone and only two inside the time so far. These tricky corners at friends

:14:48.:14:57.

six. Hardly anyone has got a direct line over these corners. It is

:14:58.:15:01.

impossible to get a straight route. You have to do a bit of bending.

:15:02.:15:11.

A great shot of the horse and rider. He has his eye on the second

:15:12.:15:18.

element. He lets the horse get on with his job and make the second

:15:19.:15:23.

one, no problem. It is less than the eye of a needle.

:15:24.:15:27.

A lovely piece of riding. A very measured approach to get himself

:15:28.:15:36.

fit. His last important competition he looked as good as he has done in

:15:37.:15:42.

the preparation. He knows he has to be on song if he wants to win a gold

:15:43.:15:46.

medal, something he has never done. So nearly in Athens. His horse went

:15:47.:15:57.

saw overnight. But he would love to do it on this lovely stallion. He is

:15:58.:16:04.

giving us a thrilling bit of spectator time here. He is making it

:16:05.:16:08.

look convincing. You can hear the horse brushing

:16:09.:16:20.

through that. There is a camera attached to the fence.

:16:21.:16:30.

Well written. Excellent. He got a punchy, positive, good stride up and

:16:31.:16:44.

kept accelerating. That is an enormous log. Chilli Morning looks

:16:45.:16:54.

like he is in fighting form. They won Badminton in 2015.

:16:55.:17:02.

This has been one of the reasons why William has worked so hard over

:17:03.:17:08.

recent months, with a great team around him. Chilli Morning galloping

:17:09.:17:16.

relentlessly. Looking effortless, covering the ground brilliantly. He

:17:17.:17:21.

has not brushed himself, he has given the horse time. Chilli Morning

:17:22.:17:25.

has not done a lot of competing in the last 18 months, but he is one of

:17:26.:17:30.

the best horses in the world at the moment. He won individual bronze in

:17:31.:17:41.

the World Championships in 2014. Britain took silver, behind the

:17:42.:17:48.

Germans. William would love to put that right. That was the world

:17:49.:17:57.

title. That was Sandra Auffarth, she has been round, with one refusal.

:17:58.:18:08.

Some of these fences are very well numbered and lettered, because there

:18:09.:18:43.

are places where you can take a turn, other places where you can't.

:18:44.:18:48.

It is not easy. The third of the four waters. He is

:18:49.:19:22.

through that. This lovely stallion, Chilli Morning, with some lovely

:19:23.:19:30.

young horses. A very exciting stallion, but he is still capable.

:19:31.:19:42.

As Mark Todd gets under way. For New Zealand, the number two rider. In

:19:43.:19:47.

17th place after dressage, with a score of 44.

:19:48.:19:58.

William Fox-Pitt is not alone. He comes to the final water. It has

:19:59.:20:08.

caused various problems. A lot of changes of plans. You have to have

:20:09.:20:13.

several plans in your head and be ready to change at any point. This

:20:14.:20:20.

is where the course designer has done a fantastic job. He gets there

:20:21.:20:27.

in three and two, a turn in three, brilliant. Only three fences to go.

:20:28.:20:36.

They still have to climb up to the top of the hill. It is a massive

:20:37.:20:42.

spread, wide fence. Chilli Morning steps over it. The front bar was put

:20:43.:20:54.

there by a crane, it is so heavy. He is over the time. Not hugely.

:20:55.:21:03.

Comment down to the last. You can see the second ticking away.

:21:04.:21:16.

That penalty includes the 20. Disappointment for written. But

:21:17.:21:26.

William around with the best of the British scores so far. Now, Mark

:21:27.:21:35.

Todd. What a man, two Olympic Games. A brilliant piece of direction by

:21:36.:21:42.

the 60-year-old. The horse had a look. He never moved, he kept the

:21:43.:21:49.

horse the right side of the flag. He was so brilliant here at

:21:50.:21:54.

reorganising, keeping the balance, to jump the second element. In the

:21:55.:22:00.

start box, a very important round, Michael Jung, the European, world

:22:01.:22:10.

and Olympic medallist. The winner of Badminton and Burley. What can he do

:22:11.:22:14.

for the German team? Very interesting situation. One the Grand

:22:15.:22:25.

Slam on this horse. This is a combination that really has done

:22:26.:22:30.

everything. He won his first Olympic gold in London. That was on his 30th

:22:31.:22:37.

birthday. He had his 34th birthday a week ago. The great Mark Todd. Not

:22:38.:22:51.

only riding at his seventh Olympics, but managing the Brazilian team.

:22:52.:22:55.

That has never been done before. That would not be an easy

:22:56.:23:01.

combination. He has a big stride. It is a committed three down the hill,

:23:02.:23:05.

then you have to turn in the air and get a short three. It was well

:23:06.:23:13.

planned and organised. There is no man better at doing that. That was

:23:14.:23:21.

not the most attractive line I have ever seen through fence six! Michael

:23:22.:23:24.

Jung manoeuvres this horse brilliantly. And Sam spending like a

:23:25.:23:39.

pony club games pony. 14 years old. It is a very good overhead shot.

:23:40.:23:46.

That is a great line. This man is as good as ever.

:23:47.:23:54.

He asks for it and gets a response. This is a man who retired after the

:23:55.:24:01.

Sydney Olympics. He will be close to the time. The time faults are

:24:02.:24:15.

clocking up. That will be added onto his dress roles score of 44. He goes

:24:16.:24:28.

into third place. The further this combination go, the more they look

:24:29.:24:39.

their best. He seemed to set off under pressure. But now they are

:24:40.:24:44.

looking like the partnership that has won Olympic gold. They lost

:24:45.:24:48.

their world title to Sandra Urbach in France. But then they won the

:24:49.:24:56.

European title. On an eight-year-old that he was going to write here, but

:24:57.:25:01.

he had a problem, so it was the beloved id Sam that won him his

:25:02.:25:06.

Rolex Grand Slam, three back-to-back competitions, Burley, Kentucky and

:25:07.:25:11.

Badminton. This is an important round full Germany to get them back

:25:12.:25:16.

in the team pecking order. Still clear at the moment. The first horse

:25:17.:25:25.

that has not touched that bamboo fence. He has got his ears pricked,

:25:26.:25:37.

still galloping freely and well. A good line again from the Olympic

:25:38.:25:41.

champion. He is defending his title on the horse he won on in London. In

:25:42.:25:48.

London he was 11th overnight after cross-country and client with a

:25:49.:25:53.

brilliant clear round to win it. One has to remember this is a three

:25:54.:25:59.

phase sport. It is an all-round test of horse and rider, it is what it is

:26:00.:26:07.

all about. This horse is going to cruise home. No problem, he is

:26:08.:26:15.

flying. He is still charging on, and Michael is saying, hang on. Over 14

:26:16.:26:23.

seconds inside the time, incredible. He looked a bit patchy and rough and

:26:24.:26:26.

sketchy at the beginning, but Michael Jung, in spite of all he has

:26:27.:26:32.

one, felt under a huge amount of pressure. Sandra Auffarth had 20

:26:33.:26:37.

penalties, said he was under pressure to come up with the goods.

:26:38.:26:41.

You are probably frustrated? Yes, disappointing to be up there and

:26:42.:26:51.

mess it up. But I hope he is OK, life goes on. So far, Team GB are

:26:52.:26:57.

not doing what we dreamt of. In terms of that fence and on the

:26:58.:27:03.

Holocaust, it is such a compromise between covering the ground quickly,

:27:04.:27:06.

but the lines are so tight -- on the whole course. I did not think it was

:27:07.:27:13.

tight for him, it was my fault. I let him come to freely. He is such a

:27:14.:27:20.

genuine horse. In terms of the team, what information can you give to

:27:21.:27:23.

Pepper, who is a seasoned professional, and Kitty? They are

:27:24.:27:29.

both true professionals, they know what is going on. I will tell them

:27:30.:27:38.

if they ask, but it is between me and Yogi, he will relay what he

:27:39.:27:40.

wants to. Disappointment is etched on his

:27:41.:27:45.

face, it has hindered his individual chances, because the run out at the

:27:46.:27:51.

ski jump section means he dropped from first to 11th overall, with

:27:52.:27:56.

half the field still to go. As he alluded to, it is the top three

:27:57.:28:00.

scores in the eventing that count, so there is no pressure on the

:28:01.:28:05.

decaying and Pippa Funnell, who will go shortly. We will keep you up to

:28:06.:28:11.

date. I bring you better news from the men's shooting. It is in the

:28:12.:28:18.

trap, it is claimed, with a shotgun, the single trap. Four years ago it

:28:19.:28:22.

was Peter Wilson who won in the double trap, shooting at who

:28:23.:28:27.

different ways, this is just the single, and it is Ed Ling, from

:28:28.:28:31.

Taunton, who has made it through in second place to this evening's

:28:32.:28:36.

semifinal, his third Olympics, he has come 25th and 21st, so this is a

:28:37.:28:42.

significant improvement. Real chances for him. He is thrilled with

:28:43.:28:48.

his progress today. 7pm your time, he will go in the semifinal. We are

:28:49.:28:53.

taking due to the Aquatic Centre, some of the biggest names in the

:28:54.:28:57.

sport are in the pool, Michael Phelps, Chad Le Clos, Federica

:28:58.:29:05.

Pellegrini, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor. Plenty for Helen and her guests to

:29:06.:29:10.

get their teeth into. Good afternoon. Plenty to get

:29:11.:29:14.

excited about at the last night, two medals for Team GB. Today we see

:29:15.:29:18.

some bright stars, Siobhan-Marie O'Connor, but before we get to that,

:29:19.:29:24.

the women's 200 meter freestyle, it is stacked. This is going to be one

:29:25.:29:32.

of the toughest events, Federica Pellegrini, Missy Franklin, Katie

:29:33.:29:36.

Ledecky, Sarah back in the pool. It is all about making the semifinals

:29:37.:29:41.

tonight. Two of those ladies got world records last night. They

:29:42.:29:46.

smashed them. The interesting thing will be if you look back at Katie

:29:47.:29:51.

Ledecky's form, she has not lost in three years at a major

:29:52.:29:54.

championships, and she is smashing world records. You have Sarah

:29:55.:30:02.

Sjostrom going from the butterfly. We have not seen the best of Missy

:30:03.:30:05.

Franklin for a few years. It will be interesting.

:30:06.:30:11.

Lets see how she gets on in the heats. Andy, Adrian, over to you.

:30:12.:30:19.

COMMENTATOR: Women's freestyle and the big swimmers starting to come

:30:20.:30:30.

through. The world record holder, Federica Pellegrini. Missy Franklin,

:30:31.:30:36.

too. She didn't have the best trials. The 14-year-old leading the

:30:37.:30:48.

lane. The beautiful stroke, nearest your camera. A catch up stroke. It

:30:49.:30:55.

is a bit of a drill that you do. Very effective. Left arm stays there

:30:56.:31:01.

while the right arm gets to it. Quite strong.

:31:02.:31:08.

At the halfway mark, China way out in the lead.

:31:09.:31:23.

Stopover on the far side. Look at those legs. It is like a motor. 0.25

:31:24.:31:43.

seconds now, Pellegrini well known for a strong finish. 35 metres to

:31:44.:31:50.

go, 25 by the next red marker. Pellegrini is eating back the lead.

:31:51.:32:00.

Struggling in the centre of the four. It looks like it may be

:32:01.:32:07.

perfect timing for Pellegrini. She wins the first of the seeded heats.

:32:08.:32:25.

China, 1:56.7. It is a bit dangerous. The won you don't want to

:32:26.:32:29.

be fourth when there are two more heats to go. Sorry, one more heat to

:32:30.:32:35.

go. In the previous heats, there was a swimmer that went faster. 16 more

:32:36.:32:40.

swimmers and she is in fifth place, I think she will struggle.

:32:41.:32:47.

Pellegrini, very strong. She should make the semi, I think. I think

:32:48.:32:56.

there are four in each heats, 12 or 13. Pellegrini sticking her tongue

:32:57.:33:08.

out at somebody. Not us, I hope. There is the world record holder.

:33:09.:33:15.

That is the shape of the fastest woman in history in the 200 metres

:33:16.:33:18.

freestyle. Fantastic. Fourth is a dangerous place to

:33:19.:33:32.

finish. Should be OK for the semifinals. Some quick semis to

:33:33.:33:41.

come, and this next one will be fascinating. This is the race where

:33:42.:33:45.

the sprinters go up and the distance comes down and they meet in the

:33:46.:33:52.

middle. The great Katie Ledecky taking the gold in the 400 metres

:33:53.:34:04.

freestyle last night. Ledecky has been working hard on the sprint. She

:34:05.:34:09.

has the white cap on, the dark blue tracksuit and the dark goggles.

:34:10.:34:13.

Still focused. She has a gold and silver medal already. She is walking

:34:14.:34:27.

quite slowly and carefully. Great experience for Eleanor Faulkner in

:34:28.:34:33.

lane eight. Max Litchfield, we saw get fourth place on day one will

:34:34.:34:44.

stop brilliant swim. Katie Ledecky there. Three gold medals, maybe

:34:45.:34:52.

four. She has a chance to defend an Olympic title before she is 20. She

:34:53.:34:59.

is still in high school, just graduated from high school. Amazing.

:35:00.:35:09.

Katie Ledecky in four. Eleanor Faulkner in eight.

:35:10.:35:16.

Heat five of six of the women's 200 meter freestyle. Eleanor Faulkner

:35:17.:35:23.

closest to us. The great Katie Ledecky in four for the US. Four and

:35:24.:35:38.

five, you already have gold medals at these Olympic Games. Of day

:35:39.:35:42.

three. You mentioned the distance guys

:35:43.:35:53.

coming down, so we talk about Katie Ledecky having more sprint in her. .

:35:54.:36:04.

We have just seen Pellegrini and the others are coming down to meet her

:36:05.:36:08.

in the middle. Pellegrini set that world record.

:36:09.:36:20.

She is working quite hard down this third 50 metres. She pushed pretty

:36:21.:36:28.

hard, that first 100. I thought she would have gone relatively

:36:29.:36:30.

comfortable and then picked it up. Clearly wants to get rid of the swim

:36:31.:36:35.

last night to make sure she is right on form and going well. Doesn't she

:36:36.:36:39.

look good? Just to stick with the group in the first 50 and then

:36:40.:36:43.

extend it. She was very focused when she came in. What these great

:36:44.:36:48.

multiple swimmers do, they are able to reset themselves each swim and

:36:49.:36:53.

treat each one as it comes and don't look beyond that. The same routine,

:36:54.:36:57.

the same pattern happens for each of those swimmers. It is the perfect

:36:58.:37:03.

spearhead, just about, extending the lead a tiny bit but that is a

:37:04.:37:07.

wonderful lead swim. If you weren't sure whether she could come back

:37:08.:37:10.

after winning the 400 metres freestyle and her world record last

:37:11.:37:14.

night, she has absolutely blown the field away with a 1:55.0. It was

:37:15.:37:19.

frightening, it looked special. She worked hard, but I'm sure that will

:37:20.:37:28.

be a 1.54 or 1.53 in the final. Breathing hard, as expected. It is

:37:29.:37:33.

right on the cost of two short for her. They wouldn't have had her on

:37:34.:37:40.

the four times 100 free unless she was in great spread form.

:37:41.:37:48.

Streamlined as they entered the water, every single technical small

:37:49.:37:53.

part of the race is taken care of with swimmers at this level. We know

:37:54.:37:59.

a lot of age groups watched this and I hopefully inspired. Don't just be

:38:00.:38:03.

inspired to swim up and down training lengths. The start, the

:38:04.:38:09.

streamlining, everything your coach tells you that you don't want to

:38:10.:38:13.

listen to, you should listen. I was blown away in the States with the

:38:14.:38:17.

amount of technical stuff they do, the stroke technique they do in the

:38:18.:38:21.

training sessions. It is not just all about the length and distance.

:38:22.:38:30.

So which technical focus. The second to last heat, Katie Ledecky wins it.

:38:31.:38:47.

He's doing that dance that you did last night. He's got the same hat. I

:38:48.:38:54.

was more energetic than that when Adam Peaty one. It was a dad dance,

:38:55.:39:05.

mate. It was, and I am proud of it. Don't tell me you have better shapes

:39:06.:39:14.

than that. I will show you. Actually... We should take you up on

:39:15.:39:19.

that. Let's get the commentator camera on and sees both shapes

:39:20.:39:23.

thrown by Mr Moorhouse. Final heat...

:39:24.:39:34.

You talked about the sprinters coming up to the 200s and here we

:39:35.:39:44.

have Sarah Sjostrom with the fastest time in the world. But she didn't

:39:45.:39:48.

submit to the European Championships. She hasn't submitted

:39:49.:39:55.

to the last two major meet. She busted the fastest time in the world

:39:56.:40:02.

and in is in the fastest heat. It didn't feature in the Championships,

:40:03.:40:06.

which is why she didn't submit. There are two Brazilians in this in

:40:07.:40:12.

lane seven and eight. Don't think they will contend for the semis, but

:40:13.:40:15.

it is always possible with the crowd like this. I think at the worlds it

:40:16.:40:21.

didn't fit into her programme and it wasn't her favoured event so she

:40:22.:40:25.

decided not to. The Europeans, she might have swung the heats and then

:40:26.:40:29.

decided to go home to her Olympic training camp. She is fastest in the

:40:30.:40:39.

world. Having got the 100 fly out of the way last night, she can relax.

:40:40.:40:44.

Gold medal, world record in her favourite event. World-record,

:40:45.:40:51.

stunning. 1:52.9. She got the world record last night. I was going to

:40:52.:40:57.

say, 1.52, maybe. She needs to go 1.4 second lifetime best. It is

:40:58.:41:04.

possible. Heat number six, the final heat of the women's 200 meter

:41:05.:41:09.

freestyle. Sarah Sjostrom in the centre probably had the worst start.

:41:10.:41:13.

She looked like she was using a flight swim at start. She went deep

:41:14.:41:17.

and lower. Not sure that was advisable. Still, she is leading the

:41:18.:41:30.

group out with lane three, Shen. She made the final last year. She goes

:41:31.:41:34.

out quickly on the world record sprint. Pellegrini went incredibly

:41:35.:41:51.

fast. Sjostrom I'm sure has released so many demons by winning the gold

:41:52.:41:56.

medal last night. She was fourth at the Olympics four years ago, fourth

:41:57.:41:59.

in the relay on the first night here. She finally has an Olympic

:42:00.:42:05.

gold medal. She turns first, 56.2. Pity much what Katie Ledecky turned

:42:06.:42:12.

in. The Brazilian closest to us going very well indeed, Lyrio. This

:42:13.:42:20.

is a surprise, she could make the semis. She needs to keep it going

:42:21.:42:29.

for the last length. Bonnet is going well, as well. Lyrio has left her

:42:30.:42:37.

team-mate behind. The crowd are urging her on. They need a top three

:42:38.:42:44.

finish to have a time where they are getting into the final. Sjostrom

:42:45.:42:48.

looking really strong after the exertions of last night. Looking

:42:49.:42:55.

really good indeed. Coming back in lane three is Shen of China. We will

:42:56.:43:10.

have to wait to see whether she has done it. Sjostrom was looking so

:43:11.:43:15.

tense and nervous before this started. I'm sure the weight of

:43:16.:43:19.

expectation from Sweden on her shoulders, would she probably win a

:43:20.:43:26.

gold? One that we probably gave to her. She is probably a lot more

:43:27.:43:31.

relaxed and you can see it in the way she holds herself as she walks

:43:32.:43:36.

out for the race. It is going to be a fascinating final, it really is.

:43:37.:43:45.

Sjostrom meets Katie Ledecky, meets Pellegrini, the world record-holder,

:43:46.:43:53.

and I wonder what will happen. The final is tomorrow. Not this evening.

:43:54.:43:56.

The Brazilians really get into this, in the crowd. The right-hand side of

:43:57.:44:06.

their... I don't know if you had the massive cheer, but that is because a

:44:07.:44:17.

Brazilian has made the semifinal. Lyrio, well done. Top 16, one .5

:44:18.:44:25.

7.4. Only one swimmer under 1.58 didn't make it.

:44:26.:44:44.

The qualifiers into the semifinal... Katie Ledecky looked comfortable.

:44:45.:44:53.

Sjostrom comfortable. Pellegrini is in there. The big four, the big

:44:54.:44:59.

five, will be in the centre lanes. Missy Franklin down in 12th,

:45:00.:45:03.

goodness me, did not look good at all. That is the end of the 200

:45:04.:45:07.

meter freestyle. Looking forward to the next stuff.

:45:08.:45:11.

Georgia Coates and Ellie Faulkner failing to make it through. The

:45:12.:45:18.

swimming heat continue on the Red Button.

:45:19.:45:24.

We are back to you for the 200 butterfly in the men's shortly, but

:45:25.:45:28.

let's get you up to date with what is going on in the rowing. We are

:45:29.:45:37.

catching up. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning squeaked over the

:45:38.:45:43.

line, but let's look at the men's four. There has been a dynasty

:45:44.:45:47.

established, Great Britain going for a fiscal medal in a row, since Steve

:45:48.:45:53.

Redgrave won his fifth. We'll be dynasty continue? This is their

:45:54.:45:55.

first outing, in the third heat. This could be the best British four

:45:56.:46:05.

ever, and that is saying something, given the pedigree of what has gone

:46:06.:46:10.

before. Great Britain in lane number four, this is the final hate in the

:46:11.:46:17.

men's heavyweight coxless four. They know what has gone before, they know

:46:18.:46:22.

the expectation on them, but they dismissed it, because they know the

:46:23.:46:24.

ability within this crew is something special. Greece in lane

:46:25.:46:32.

one, France in two, South Africa in three, Great Britain closest to us

:46:33.:46:41.

in four. The winners in this event at's and Lucerne, this is the engine

:46:42.:46:45.

room that came out of the eight last year. So strong and sharp and big.

:46:46.:46:52.

They will have known the competition, that they will have the

:46:53.:46:58.

better of them over 2000 metres. What do they tell the crew in the

:46:59.:47:02.

opening heat? Don't make the race faster than it needs today. South

:47:03.:47:07.

Africa have gone out harder, they will pay for that later. The British

:47:08.:47:13.

just need to do whatever they will do for the first 500 metres, don't

:47:14.:47:19.

change their plan. The fundamental thing he will nail into them, don't

:47:20.:47:26.

let your speed drop too much. If they can match and get close to

:47:27.:47:31.

their speed in the first and second, they will destroy the opposition. If

:47:32.:47:38.

you can have a high boat speed through the middle as a metres, that

:47:39.:47:42.

is when you will destroy the Italians and Australians. They will

:47:43.:47:47.

take the lead now, then you have no chance. A nice shot of Constantine

:47:48.:48:03.

Louloudis, and George Nash is a long, flowing, relaxed character,

:48:04.:48:10.

and as the rhythm to develop. Behind him, Mohamed Sbihi, one of the best

:48:11.:48:13.

athletes out there. He is the strongest athlete Britain has ever

:48:14.:48:18.

produced. George Nash is stronger than Ted Foster. Technically and

:48:19.:48:30.

physically, they are far better. They did not make the race faster

:48:31.:48:34.

than it needed to be in the opening 500 metres, and now they are taking

:48:35.:48:38.

it on. They will not want to leave any doubt, they will not want to do

:48:39.:48:45.

anything in the last 500 metres. From now until 1500 metres they will

:48:46.:48:49.

open the gates of hell. 1000 coming up already. That is a sensational

:48:50.:48:56.

second 500 metres. The British crew are clear. They will move out

:48:57.:49:03.

without any extra work. It is all in the third 500 about being efficient

:49:04.:49:08.

but fruitless. You will not meet four more ruthless people. Alex

:49:09.:49:13.

Gregory is ruthless when he is backing up his guys. Making the

:49:14.:49:20.

calls from the bow seat. Mohamed Sbihi the monster. Long and loose.

:49:21.:49:25.

George Nash at three. Constantine Louloudis driving them on. South

:49:26.:49:33.

Africa in three, France in two, Greece in one. This is the race for

:49:34.:49:39.

second place. South Africa, France and Greece. They will have to pan

:49:40.:49:47.

back to get the British. The British from 500 metres until 1500 metres,

:49:48.:49:51.

this is where they open a world of pain on the opposition. If you look

:49:52.:49:57.

at the relaxation of the rhythm, it is different from the Australians,

:49:58.:50:02.

it is more powerful. As far as the Italians go, it is more powerful.

:50:03.:50:09.

They are in a different race now. It has been worth the wait.

:50:10.:50:15.

Sensational. Coming up towards 1500 metres. They will not let up. They

:50:16.:50:20.

will hold where they are now and look to get the distance increased.

:50:21.:50:27.

The coach of the Great Britain top boat in the men's four, his boys

:50:28.:50:32.

living up to the expectation. Pushing them on hard. 500 to go,

:50:33.:50:39.

they are moving on, without having to be challenged. Great Britain

:50:40.:50:47.

inlay and four. Everybody else racing for the other two

:50:48.:50:52.

qualification spots. Greece in lane one, France in two, South Africa in

:50:53.:50:59.

three. They are taking four strokes a minute less than the opposition.

:51:00.:51:03.

They will maintain the speed they did in the first 1500 metres, no

:51:04.:51:08.

need for them to sprint to the line, the others will sprint, but it will

:51:09.:51:14.

not make them as fast as Britain. It is a scary and impressive display.

:51:15.:51:20.

37 strokes per minute, Constantine Louloudis has the British four

:51:21.:51:28.

coming in. The water will not disturb the British crew, it is a

:51:29.:51:32.

job well done. They were asked to lay down a marker, a benchmark for

:51:33.:51:36.

the rest of the world, they have done that and more, without having

:51:37.:51:44.

to raise it. 75 out from the line. They are starting to ease a bit. A

:51:45.:51:48.

look over the shoulder from Mohamed Sbihi. The British crowd are

:51:49.:51:55.

appreciating this. This is only the heat. Safely through to the

:51:56.:52:00.

semifinal. They have made a big opening statement. The statement is,

:52:01.:52:06.

Great Britain are back, they are here to look to defend their 2012

:52:07.:52:07.

Olympic title. Pretty emphatic, very impressive,

:52:08.:52:16.

Steve Redgrave has fond memories of this event, this is the one in which

:52:17.:52:20.

you claim your fifth gold medal. When you look at the succession

:52:21.:52:25.

planning, Great Britain going for a fiscal medal in a row, how much of a

:52:26.:52:30.

success is due to the fact that there has been a progression who

:52:31.:52:34.

have carried on? I would like to say my memory is as good as that, but I

:52:35.:52:39.

can't remember 16 years ago! Success breeds success. With the same

:52:40.:52:47.

support team in hand, they have a formula of how to produce great

:52:48.:52:50.

athletes coming through. That is what they have done each year.

:52:51.:52:54.

Whichever boat the top guys are put in, the eight win the World

:52:55.:52:59.

Championships, the four should win this year. The Australians looked

:53:00.:53:07.

very impressive in their heat, the Italians won theirs. The Italians

:53:08.:53:10.

were working harder, but all three boats were around the same time, so

:53:11.:53:16.

there is hard work to do. But they have set the scene. They were the

:53:17.:53:21.

most impressive out of the three. The psychology is fascinating, such

:53:22.:53:26.

an emphatic margin, contrasted with Helen and Heather in the women's

:53:27.:53:30.

pair, does that give you a few causes for concern, the manner of

:53:31.:53:36.

the victory today? Very much so, they have not come down yet, they

:53:37.:53:39.

will come in shortly for me to interview them. We will get their

:53:40.:53:44.

spin on it, but that. What we were expecting, we were expecting the

:53:45.:53:49.

medals to be between America, New Zealand and rate Britain, and Great

:53:50.:53:54.

Britain have not been beaten before, we expected them to dominate the

:53:55.:54:01.

heat, not scrape through. There is a concern. I want to find out what

:54:02.:54:08.

their story is. Your day is done. Our James Bond wannabe, you can

:54:09.:54:11.

enjoy something shaken and not stirred. It was nice to be in the

:54:12.:54:19.

same line, but I am not taking over from Daniel Craig. I am taking over

:54:20.:54:25.

from John Inverdale! White and saying nothing, otherwise I will get

:54:26.:54:29.

into big trouble! Straight back to the Aquatic Centre. We will feature

:54:30.:54:36.

one of the key races of the swimming meet, the men's 200 metres

:54:37.:54:41.

butterfly, the one that gave us a fantastic race in London, Chad Le

:54:42.:54:45.

Clos against Michael Phelps. Chad Le Clos is in the first heat we will

:54:46.:54:50.

see, let's see how he fares, it has been a turbulent build-up, out of

:54:51.:54:56.

his parents not well, including his effervescent father, but they are

:54:57.:54:57.

here to watch him. Chad Le Clos, the defending

:54:58.:55:09.

champion, in lane four, the second heat of the men's 200 metres

:55:10.:55:13.

butterfly. There are some quick men around him, Masato Sakai. I think

:55:14.:55:21.

Tom Shields will try to do a job on him. Chad Le Clos has an interesting

:55:22.:55:30.

situation. He is try to qualify for the semifinal, this event is his

:55:31.:55:36.

best chance. How much effort you put in, because he is in the 200

:55:37.:55:43.

freestyle final later. I like to see him looking around every now and

:55:44.:55:48.

again as he gets closer to the end of the race, to see where he is

:55:49.:55:52.

placed. Checking where the rest of the field are. Just exert enough

:55:53.:55:58.

effort. We think it causes him more effort, but he likes to see where he

:55:59.:56:10.

is. He has not turned first. Daniil Pakhomov was the first to turn. It

:56:11.:56:15.

is difficult to swim medium pace or slower, because it changes the

:56:16.:56:18.

timing of your stroke. It changes the body position. Your feet sink a

:56:19.:56:23.

bit. When you go fast, your body is flat. When you go slower, you can

:56:24.:56:30.

have your hips and feet sink, and it is harder to sing. -- to swim. It

:56:31.:56:38.

comes naturally to have a quick left and right. He is leading the race.

:56:39.:56:45.

He is the master of this. A quick look to the right. He is leading

:56:46.:56:51.

this one. He is still looking around. Another look. He will just

:56:52.:57:00.

about when. My goodness. It would be great to look around like that and

:57:01.:57:06.

have a couple of sandwiches and go 1:50 5.50 seven.

:57:07.:57:18.

Michael Phelps in lane four. This is the heard -- the third heat of four.

:57:19.:57:28.

He has got a white hat, in the centre. Daiya Seto has the blackout,

:57:29.:57:36.

he has the audacity to be taking him out! It is helpful that Michael has

:57:37.:57:43.

put a white cap on. But Daiya Seto taking out Michael Phelps. We saw

:57:44.:57:49.

this in the 400 medley. Staying a lot longer underwater than Michael.

:57:50.:57:55.

Very interesting. He is out kicking him on the turn. He had a very

:57:56.:57:59.

strong butterfly leg in the 400 medley. Two lengths after the turn.

:58:00.:58:06.

Michael Phelps doing enough on his shoulder. Grand opening of Australia

:58:07.:58:15.

going in first. It is very pedestrian from Michael Phelps, very

:58:16.:58:20.

comfortable in deed. 55.3, but it looks like he could have stopped and

:58:21.:58:24.

had a cup of tea and a chat and turned around. He looks really

:58:25.:58:29.

comfortable. He is starting to wind it up now. He does not do average or

:58:30.:58:35.

slow very well. His technique is a bit different when he is going

:58:36.:58:39.

slower, but now he is starting to move. The race is at the top. From

:58:40.:58:53.

two to six, sorry, two to five. Grant Irvine keeping the lead, but

:58:54.:59:01.

three and four coming through. Beautiful. He is swimming away. He

:59:02.:59:10.

has an awkward looking stroke. His timing is slightly off, but his last

:59:11.:59:16.

50 was very good. I am sure that Michael Phelps knew what he was

:59:17.:59:26.

doing. He did not react to Tamas Kenderesi?. I think it is brilliant.

:59:27.:59:32.

Tamas Kenderesi? making a good transition from 2014, the junior

:59:33.:59:38.

championships. He won the -- he has taken down Michael Phelps.

:59:39.:59:49.

This was the very first length, I believe. Just coming towards the

:59:50.:59:58.

end, Kenderesi extending the lead in the last five metres. Just to the

:59:59.:00:02.

right of Michael Phelps in the centre. Nice stretch, nice finish

:00:03.:00:12.

will stop Michael Phelps, not bad, either. Not easy to swim average

:00:13.:00:17.

pace. He didn't swim that well at the American trials on the 200 fly,

:00:18.:00:22.

Michael Phelps, his 200 was a bit ropey. He wasn't particularly happy

:00:23.:00:26.

with it. He needs to swim faster if he is to win tomorrow night.

:00:27.:00:29.

Kenderesi wins it. Seto will certainly be true to the

:00:30.:00:42.

semifinals tonight. Comfortable from Michael Phelps. Comfortable, but he

:00:43.:00:49.

will have some work to do. I cannot wait to see how Laszlo Cseh is

:00:50.:00:52.

swimming. He is my favourite for this one. That final tomorrow night

:00:53.:01:00.

will be an absolute corker. Those three men, and there you are

:01:01.:01:13.

looking at Laszlo Cseh, the only three men to have gone under 1.5

:01:14.:01:17.

forces the London Olympic Games. Both capable. -- 1.54 since the

:01:18.:01:26.

London games. If he goes 1:52.9, he could well win

:01:27.:01:46.

it. The Olympic Games was only when in 1:52.6. 1:52.9... I think Laszlo

:01:47.:01:58.

Cseh could be faster. B is my favourite, he is my man. The

:01:59.:02:08.

Hungarian from Hungary. Last heat of the men's 200 fly. Laszlo Cseh, the

:02:09.:02:15.

30-year-old in lane four. The bald head of Hungary. We've seen 1.54 and

:02:16.:02:25.

1.55 so far. The big guys in the centre should be comfortable. Very

:02:26.:02:28.

good start from David Morgan of Australia up in lane two. Laszlo

:02:29.:02:34.

Cseh with the ball head in the centre. David Morgan is the nephew

:02:35.:02:41.

of Rob Morgan, a British diver. Welsh. I found that out from Leon

:02:42.:02:50.

Taylor at breakfast this morning. Himself an Olympic silver medallist.

:02:51.:02:54.

It is amazing what nuggets you pick up after cornflakes. The Brazilian

:02:55.:03:04.

in sixth going very well, Leonardo de Deus. He is pleasing the crowd.

:03:05.:03:13.

Laszlo Cseh looking comfortable in the centre. Brazil first. Look at

:03:14.:03:21.

this. Columbia second, Poland third. What a great first 100 metres. The

:03:22.:03:26.

crowd is mooring their approval about the opening 100 metres. --

:03:27.:03:36.

you expect lane three and four to come back, but I would love to see

:03:37.:03:43.

this guy hold onto this lead. 50 metres to go at that turn and

:03:44.:03:52.

Leonardo de Deus is first. The rest of the field is starting to reel him

:03:53.:03:56.

in. Still going well with the yellow head. The world champion, Laszlo

:03:57.:04:05.

Cseh, in fourth. Let's hope he can hold on. This is a brave 200 fly.

:04:06.:04:10.

Swimming like this really hurts. Laszlo Cseh will win the final heat.

:04:11.:04:15.

It looked comfortable, 1:55.1, around with the or that big guys.

:04:16.:04:21.

They will all be safely through to the semifinal. The two Brazilians

:04:22.:04:25.

might make it through. It is very good indeed for them. He is sucking

:04:26.:04:31.

in the air. Laszlo Cseh has worked hard on that one, having to bring

:04:32.:04:34.

back the second hundred metres will stop can he dropped two seconds? Is

:04:35.:04:41.

he looking worried? I'm not sure. You analyse your race immediately,

:04:42.:04:46.

ESP link it, he has seen the time. He knows exactly how... He knows the

:04:47.:04:52.

time, how it felt, and you analyse those two things together and you

:04:53.:04:55.

get out of the water. There is a bit of concern there. The timing of his

:04:56.:05:06.

stroke I'm worried about. Look at the distance between his chin and

:05:07.:05:09.

the water, much too much. He can go flatter. Too much energy to go high

:05:10.:05:14.

and he can use a lot more of that is to take him forward, propel him

:05:15.:05:19.

forward. His energy systems are going slightly in the wrong

:05:20.:05:22.

direction at the moment. Having said that, 1.55 is not bad at all.

:05:23.:05:31.

Interesting. Lot more slight than some other swimmers in physique.

:05:32.:05:39.

The world, European champion Tom Laszlo Cseh wins it. The two

Brazilians, I think may well make it. Let's see who is through to the

:05:47.:05:54.

semifinals. They will be split in the first and

:05:55.:06:06.

second semifinal. Michael Phelps, pretty standard. It is going to be a

:06:07.:06:11.

great semifinal. That final tomorrow night! Very good indeed. Two

:06:12.:06:13.

Brazilians in there, as well. Ding, ding, ding. Round one of the

:06:14.:06:29.

Michael Phelps contest is over. It's not just about those two. Laszlo

:06:30.:06:39.

Cseh, Michael Phelps, Chad. What do you make of it? They'll swim in

:06:40.:06:43.

different ways. Michael Phelps looked sharp. In his favourite

:06:44.:06:47.

events, the 200 fly, he looked heavy. He could see the contrast in

:06:48.:06:53.

strokes there. Chad has the final tonight and always plays in the

:06:54.:06:58.

heats. Michael, 200 fly is never easy anyway, it is hard to read too

:06:59.:07:05.

much into it. I think Stefani looks the best. We saw him at the European

:07:06.:07:08.

Championships earlier in the year, buzz today the nominal time. -- I

:07:09.:07:16.

think Laszlo Cseh looks best. He must be the only person in the world

:07:17.:07:20.

he was disappointed that Michael Phelps has come out of retirement.

:07:21.:07:28.

Anyone in this event, when he makes a comeback would be a bit like, oh,

:07:29.:07:38.

really? Laszlo has come fourth or fifth on several occasions. If Jock

:07:39.:07:42.

of it hadn't been around, Andy Murray would have won lots more

:07:43.:07:48.

things. -- if Novak Djokovic hadn't been around. Let's look ahead. On

:07:49.:07:57.

BBC Two later on, we have Hannah Miley, the birthday girl. Happy

:07:58.:08:05.

birthday, Hannah. And also Schiavone. What are their chances

:08:06.:08:13.

much my Bell this is Siobhan's best event. Hannah said herself after the

:08:14.:08:16.

400, this is a fun event for hair and a bit of a bonus. Her best event

:08:17.:08:25.

is 400. Siobhan is the British girl to watch. She was in the London

:08:26.:08:30.

Olympics, as well. She has been swooning fantastically, Siobhan. Her

:08:31.:08:34.

skills, you have to credit them. There are some of the best in the

:08:35.:08:38.

world. Her start, head turns, she executes everything perfectly.

:08:39.:08:42.

Hannah was so agonisingly close to the middle the other night. Is there

:08:43.:08:50.

any chance she could be fired up, potential final Olympics, she's

going to chase it? No, the 200 metres is too short for her. The 200

also David Florence in the canoe slalom. 34 today. He has been around

:09:11.:09:15.

a bit. He has qualified very easily for the canoe slalom single and that

:09:16.:09:20.

is for the final. Today, he is in action with his partner Richard

:09:21.:09:27.

Hounslow, with him he took silver in London. What a day that was on the

:09:28.:09:32.

Thursday. The Nasa is giddy with a Great Britain one and two back then.

:09:33.:09:38.

He has never won an Olympic gold, David Florence, and he is back to

try to do so here. It is the first of two qualification runs and the

:09:43.:09:45.

fastest 11 boats that go through to the final.

:09:46.:09:51.

Big moment for Great Britain after the success yesterday. David

:09:52.:09:57.

Florence, their peers. His birthday today. 34 years. Richard Hounslow is

the same age. Looking to continue their run of form. The world

:10:04.:10:08.

champions back in 2013. Didn't go their way in deep Creek, but they

:10:09.:10:12.

produced a blisteringly fast time in Lea Valley, but too many penalties

:10:13.:10:18.

putting them off the podium. Certainly medal potential, but they

:10:19.:10:24.

have come here for one colour only. They certainly have. Looking very

:10:25.:10:29.

controlled at the moment. Richard in the back turning the boat round.

:10:30.:10:34.

This is where we see a few tricky bits. 1.17 up on the split so far.

:10:35.:10:42.

You see Richard putting the steering straight. The back man often looks

:10:43.:10:47.

like he is not working as hard, but he puts in so much effort in each of

:10:48.:10:52.

those turning strokes. The first tricky sequence through 14. Watch

:10:53.:10:57.

the power required from 14 to 15. Have to make sure they get across.

:10:58.:11:01.

No problem at all. Good boat work again. Down towards 17. The gate on

:11:02.:11:06.

the left. Six upstream gates on this course of 24. Looking extremely

:11:07.:11:16.

composed. Looking for the lines. A superb run from Richard and David.

:11:17.:11:19.

Now they have to get this bit right and they are going for the spin, as

:11:20.:11:28.

predicted. They can drive through 21 and injured 22. It will be

:11:29.:11:31.

interesting to see how many crews adopt that move. Those starting

:11:32.:11:35.

later will keep half an eye on what is going on, try to learn as much as

:11:36.:11:40.

they can. One gate to go for Florence and Hounslow. This is

:11:41.:11:44.

reminiscent of David Florence's first he'd run yesterday in the C1.

:11:45.:11:56.

1:07.70 one. Now they have the option of sitting out the second

:11:57.:12:01.

heat. Absolutely. This is where they went for the spin. You spend a lot

:12:02.:12:05.

of time looking at it, taking no risks at all. They knew they didn't

:12:06.:12:08.

need to take any because they executed it so well. First clean run

:12:09.:12:15.

of the day. We are yet to find out whether they will go in the second

:12:16.:12:18.

run. David Florence opted not to go in the second run of the singles, so

:12:19.:12:22.

it could be they are through to the semifinals in style. It looks like

:12:23.:12:25.

that performers will certainly be good enough to qualify. We are just

:12:26.:12:29.

about to hop over onto BBC Two, but before we go, a reminder of the

:12:30.:12:32.

headlines so far on day three in Rio. Britain's all conquering

:12:33.:12:41.

women's pair, Helen Glover antenna starling want made to scrap in their

:12:42.:12:48.

heat but scraped the win. Britain's overnight leader William Fox-Pitt in

:12:49.:12:53.

the eventing saw his hopes of an individual medal fade after a

:12:54.:12:57.

disappointing cross-country display. He slipped down the standings. A

:12:58.:13:04.

very brave fight between the first British boxer to exit the

:13:05.:13:11.

competition here. He was joined by Ireland's Paddy Barnes after the

:13:12.:13:14.

two-time Olympic bronze medallist suffered a shock defeat in his

:13:15.:13:19.

opening out. That really was a is a price. A bit of a turn-up the books

:13:20.:13:22.

for Paddy Barnes and Ireland. That is how it stands at the midway

:13:23.:13:27.

point. It is two o'clock in our afternoon, and 6pm where you are.

:13:28.:13:31.

There is so much more to come, including the men's team gymnastics

:13:32.:13:37.

later in your evening. We will be back with Hannah Miley on BBC Two.

:13:38.:13:43.

Will she be smiley Meili in the 200 metres individual medley? We will

:13:44.:13:44.

see very shortly?
