Eight, sleep, train, repeat. Just a window into the work it takes

:00:55.:02:21.

to be an Olympian. We have another day in Rio Paradise for you this

:02:22.:02:27.

afternoon. Thank you for being with us. Welcome to the Rio Olympic Park.

:02:28.:02:36.

We have a wonderful breeze coming over us and a steady stream of fans

:02:37.:02:42.

making their way in to see the action. Let us see if they want to

:02:43.:02:46.

speak to us. What are you going to watch? Fencing. Yes. That is just

:02:47.:02:58.

over there, number three. She knows. At least someone knows. One gold

:02:59.:03:05.

medal for the Swiss team. That could have been risky. As far as the

:03:06.:03:09.

athletes are concerned, four years they wait for the Olympic rings, and

:03:10.:03:14.

on day four, Britain are to four medals. Yesterday, bronze from Ed

:03:15.:03:27.

Ling, and from Tom Daley Dan Goodfellow. With another 15 medals

:03:28.:03:33.

up for grabs, can Britain push themselves up? Here is what is

:03:34.:03:39.

coming up today. We're kicking off today with the

:03:40.:03:45.

rolling. Alan Campbell was a bronze medallist in 2012, he is an action

:03:46.:03:55.

in the silver sculls quarterfinals. We will see Russia take on Argentina

:03:56.:04:02.

in the main's volleyball. After a great women's competition, the men's

:04:03.:04:07.

rugby sevens gets underway today. We will watch Australia take on France.

:04:08.:04:14.

Before the Welsh wizard takes to the ring. Joker

:04:15.:04:32.

-- we will see the hockey in action. And we will see a whole host of

:04:33.:04:39.

swimming at the Olympic Aquatic Centre. Andrew Willis will be in the

:04:40.:04:44.

water, for Great Britain, and we will be with him. Here is how the

:04:45.:04:51.

afternoon of day for is looking. We will start with rowing, before

:04:52.:04:58.

volleyball. Great Britain's women came forth yesterday, and we will

:04:59.:05:04.

finish up with swimming for you as well. Meanwhile, on BBC One, if

:05:05.:05:12.

archery is your thing, that is the place to go. Great Britain with

:05:13.:05:18.

their first involvement, then later we will see whether Florence can win

:05:19.:05:30.

his campaign to get -- take his campaign to win an Olympic gold

:05:31.:05:37.

medal to the next level. MUSIC

:05:38.:06:00.

We are going to kick off with a sport that Great Britain have a long

:06:01.:06:07.

Olympic history in, and London 2012 was a very good year for them. Nine

:06:08.:06:15.

golds in rowing, and after some was it of days of heats, they are set to

:06:16.:06:20.

pick up more. Alan Campbell is involved in the main's single sculls

:06:21.:06:24.

this afternoon. Let us get down to Copacabana. The backdrop of the

:06:25.:06:33.

forest, and the mind not far away either. Taking interviews for us,

:06:34.:06:36.

Sir Steve Redgrave and John Inverdale. Good afternoon. We have a

:06:37.:06:40.

full programme today. Good afternoon, good morning,

:06:41.:06:46.

everyone. It is the wrong way round, it is good morning here. I know

:06:47.:06:52.

you're not into this kind of thing, but when you look at the sunshine

:06:53.:06:55.

sparkling on the water, does it not fill your heart with joy? I'm just

:06:56.:07:02.

glad that it is possible to do it here. This is our showpiece of four

:07:03.:07:08.

years, and it is all about the water. It is nice to have blue skies

:07:09.:07:19.

and a fantastic backdrop, but -- but it is for me, being fair to the

:07:20.:07:27.

athletes. Lots of action to show you. Some of it has already happened

:07:28.:07:30.

this morning. Some of it is coming up later. The main's single sculls,

:07:31.:07:32.

you mentioned Alan Campbell, coming up shortly. The first race features

:07:33.:07:35.

the Olympic and world champion in the main's -- men's quarterfinals.

:07:36.:07:48.

We're joining James Cracknell. On any other day this could be the

:07:49.:07:59.

makings of a final. We have the Czech Republic in Lane number three,

:08:00.:08:11.

the World Champion throughout this. As we look at them as they leave the

:08:12.:08:18.

starting area, Lithuania to the left of your picture is in Lane number

:08:19.:08:22.

one. , Belarus in Lane number two. New Zealand in four, Brian Rosso

:08:23.:08:30.

from Argentina is and five, and Garcia from Peru. But all eyes will

:08:31.:08:36.

be on the two men on three and four, the World Champion, and Mahe

:08:37.:08:51.

Drysdale has had great form all season. Drysdale will want to show

:08:52.:09:02.

he is back in top form that saw him win the last World Cup. It is

:09:03.:09:05.

psychological as much as qualification for the semifinal.

:09:06.:09:13.

When we were on the camera on the back of the lunch following it,

:09:14.:09:16.

there was a little noise, which is Drysdale. Here's a noisy fella, that

:09:17.:09:35.

is him grunting. I do not think he would be pleased at you calling him

:09:36.:09:40.

a little fella! He does make a bit of noise as he goes down the course.

:09:41.:09:48.

If it was my car, I would be thinking that some oil was needed. I

:09:49.:09:56.

have not seen him looking so dynamic for his season. It would be a good

:09:57.:10:01.

season by other people's standards, but not by his. Is bringing along

:10:02.:10:10.

nicely. Unfortunately he has the colours of a colour wheel behind

:10:11.:10:15.

him. In the second half, Drysdale will cruise to the front. Midway

:10:16.:10:20.

through the second 500 metres of the second quarterfinal, and at the

:10:21.:10:26.

moment it is going, from a spectator point of view, looking at the check

:10:27.:10:38.

Republic, Ondrej Synek, the defending champion, moving away. It

:10:39.:10:54.

is also a close battle between Bella Russia and Argentina. The winner

:10:55.:10:58.

goes through to a semifinal, and the fourth place goes through to

:10:59.:11:06.

semifinal C and D, and it is a difference in funding and where your

:11:07.:11:13.

ranking is. Those two men, Ondrej Synek and

:11:14.:11:17.

Drysdale, they have opened up a significant Clearwater. The

:11:18.:11:21.

Belarussian, -- Shcharbachenia, are fighting it

:11:22.:11:37.

out. It shows you the quality of the semifinal, it is four seconds

:11:38.:11:42.

quicker to halfway than the Cuban was when he was powering away in

:11:43.:11:46.

front of his. It is a high-quality race, with two exceptional athletes.

:11:47.:11:51.

These are the two who were the top two. Drysdale, Olympic champion,

:11:52.:11:56.

world record holder, and World Champion. They both look clear, they

:11:57.:12:03.

know they have qualified, and they would have known before they had

:12:04.:12:09.

even started, so what do they do now? Drysdale is racing to win this,

:12:10.:12:19.

yes? Yes, partly because he wants to put to bed any doubt there is over

:12:20.:12:23.

as form, and also he will have two other quarterfinal winners in his

:12:24.:12:31.

semifinal, so if the conditions are bad, he will not get the best Lane.

:12:32.:12:39.

This is where it must go through Ondrej Synek's head, this has

:12:40.:12:45.

happened to him so many times. The third 500 is always devastating for

:12:46.:12:51.

Drysdale, when he opens up the power. And he has done it again, and

:12:52.:12:55.

has taken eight Ondrej Synek, the World Champion, from the Czech

:12:56.:12:59.

Republic. It is devastating to see how he does this. He does not

:13:00.:13:04.

sacrifice lens, but it is all upstairs, psychologically, he relies

:13:05.:13:10.

on the miles of training and years of training, everything coming

:13:11.:13:24.

together nicely. Look at that. -- links. You can see he looks heavier,

:13:25.:13:33.

less dynamic than he did five minutes ago. If he comes back, and

:13:34.:13:43.

Drysdale, it may reinforce some of the fragility that he exhibited in

:13:44.:13:46.

his last race, whereas if he lets him dominate from now, it is almost

:13:47.:13:50.

like normal service has been resumed. He does not want that

:13:51.:13:58.

patent to be re-established. I think he has mentally sacrificed himself.

:13:59.:14:07.

-- that pattern to be re-established.

:14:08.:14:19.

To be honest, I think Drysdale has broken him here. Drysdale is going

:14:20.:14:32.

to power over the line. He did so well over the first 1500 metres. To

:14:33.:14:37.

come out in the third 500, Ondrej Synek comes over in second place.

:14:38.:14:44.

And Shcharbachenia from Belarus getting the third and final

:14:45.:14:46.

qualification spot to the semifinals.

:14:47.:14:54.

Every racist 2000 metres, and everyone speaks about it in the

:14:55.:14:58.

context of four quarters. Obviously the end is most important, but that

:14:59.:15:05.

segment that Drysdale is imperious in, what is he doing? -- every race

:15:06.:15:18.

is 2000 metres. When he races he cannot get off the block,. He said

:15:19.:15:27.

his energy for a little bit later in the race. He loves that third 500

:15:28.:15:32.

metres. Is that when it starts hurting? It is, when you are

:15:33.:15:35.

gasping. Your legs are screaming. The finish is not close enough and

:15:36.:15:38.

the start is still too close. That is weeded mentally pays. Because of

:15:39.:15:48.

the heats in rough water, it has thrown up odd results, so you would

:15:49.:15:52.

not expect the two best in the world racing each other in a quarterfinal.

:15:53.:15:58.

They both wanted a piece of the action, and Drysdale wanted it more.

:15:59.:16:01.

Ondrej Synek just sort of letting go.

:16:02.:16:08.

Mahe Drysdale is the defending champion, Alan Campbell got the

:16:09.:16:12.

bronze medal in London, and it has been an up and down Olympiad for

:16:13.:16:18.

him, illness, injury, sometimes a lack of motivation, but he becomes

:16:19.:16:22.

here the first Northern Irishman ever to compete at four Olympic

:16:23.:16:28.

Games, and he's has -- he has been talking to Matthew Pinsent.

:16:29.:16:39.

Fourth Olympic Games, does it still feel the same as it did in Athens?

:16:40.:16:49.

Athens was very different. I was the last guy in the team. I was lucky to

:16:50.:16:55.

be there. It was a real experience. It has given me a zest to continue

:16:56.:17:03.

in my Olympic path. The gladiators are on the start, all six of them.

:17:04.:17:08.

We are away in the Olympic final of the men's heavyweight single sculls.

:17:09.:17:14.

Alan Campbell in lane three. He is out like a rocket. The first

:17:15.:17:20.

Northern Ireland Olympian to have gone to four Olympic Games. This

:17:21.:17:25.

feels very final. He will not roll over, he refuses to be left behind.

:17:26.:17:31.

Alan Campbell in lane three starting to mount his challenge again. There

:17:32.:17:37.

is no unfinished business, this is it, I will go all out and do what I

:17:38.:17:43.

can do. Alan Campbell has responded to the crowd on the far side. One

:17:44.:17:49.

more/ to get your powers up and ahead. The gold-medal going to Mahe

:17:50.:17:53.

Drysdale, and it will be Alan Campbell hitting the bronze medal.

:17:54.:18:00.

We all saw what that took out a view to win the bronze in London. Is it

:18:01.:18:04.

ridiculous to think you could do that again here? All I want to do

:18:05.:18:09.

more than anything else is to do my best race. If I can do that, whether

:18:10.:18:17.

that is first or last, I will be very satisfied, I can walk away and

:18:18.:18:23.

be a happy man. Alan Campbell has done us all so proud. The Olympic

:18:24.:18:29.

bronze medallist Alan Campbell, and listen to the crowd. You are

:18:30.:18:36.

friendlier with your opponent than anyone else in the rowing events.

:18:37.:18:40.

Mahe Drysdale might stay in your house when he comes to London, but

:18:41.:18:45.

you might be in the lane next to him in an Olympic final. You will not

:18:46.:18:49.

say much to him across the water 60 seconds before the final begins.

:18:50.:18:56.

Definitely not. I am there to try to prove I am better than him, he is

:18:57.:19:01.

there to declare to the world he is better than everyone. But when you

:19:02.:19:05.

cross the finish line, the only other person that can feel your pain

:19:06.:19:09.

is the other guy that raced alongside. I have more in common

:19:10.:19:12.

with the guys I race against than the guys I train with. That is why

:19:13.:19:16.

we have a huge respect for each other. You spent more time in a

:19:17.:19:21.

single school than anyone that Britain has ever produced, so what

:19:22.:19:26.

would you say to the young teenager who will watch you in Rio and

:19:27.:19:33.

thinks, I would like to do that? Rio might be the end for me, but it is

:19:34.:19:37.

the beginning for a new breed coming through, and I am proud of that.

:19:38.:19:44.

What we created in Coleraine, with the Chambers Brothers and myself, I

:19:45.:19:48.

am not saying I was responsible for them, but there is a new breed of

:19:49.:19:52.

talent coming through. That is what I am the most proud of. There are

:19:53.:19:57.

young people coming through, getting into the sport I love, that has

:19:58.:20:02.

given me so many opportunities, to live a life less ordinary.

:20:03.:20:19.

This is for the final three places on offer for the semifinals in the

:20:20.:20:26.

men's single sculls on the fourth quarterfinal. Alan Campbell in lane

:20:27.:20:34.

three, alongside Damir Martin, the European champion from 2016. He has

:20:35.:20:41.

been around for a few years, but in terms of performance Damir Martin

:20:42.:20:46.

had a cracking year. That is what you want to have going into an

:20:47.:20:52.

Olympic Games. Uruguay in lane one. Poland in lane two, Great Britain,

:20:53.:20:57.

Alan Campbell in free. Damir Martin in lane four. The Indian in lane

:20:58.:21:05.

five, and the Iraqi in lane six. This is more than a quarterfinal for

:21:06.:21:14.

both Alan Campbell and Damir Martin. Martin is the two-time European

:21:15.:21:18.

champion, second at the final World Cup coming into the Olympics, and

:21:19.:21:24.

lost his heat. The Norwegian qualified third from his

:21:25.:21:27.

quarterfinal. This is his chance to start his Olympic regatta again. He

:21:28.:21:33.

had a bad heat. Alan Campbell has not had the best couple of years.

:21:34.:21:39.

There is no global star in this quarterfinal. They can go a long way

:21:40.:21:46.

to cementing their ambitions and realising where they are in the

:21:47.:21:51.

pecking order, going into the semifinal. The winner of this will

:21:52.:21:54.

have a good shout of a medal come the weekend. By half a length,

:21:55.:21:59.

Croatia over great written, as we go through the 500 metre mark. India

:22:00.:22:10.

sitting in their nicely. Dattu Baban Bhokanal in lane five, in third

:22:11.:22:14.

place, but a lot will change now, they will come down onto their race

:22:15.:22:20.

pace, ease out. You will not see much of a change from Alan Campbell,

:22:21.:22:26.

he likes to go over high. Damir Martin has taken the initiative.

:22:27.:22:29.

People want to consolidate. Whatever Alan throws at him, Damir Martin is

:22:30.:22:37.

a world champion from 2013 in the men's Quad, so a tonne of

:22:38.:22:43.

experience. Olympic silver medallist four years ago in the Quad as well.

:22:44.:22:49.

Here he is, going it alone. Normally, Alan shows his speed in

:22:50.:22:55.

the first 200 metres, a fast starter. But Martin took it out far

:22:56.:23:03.

quicker. He has not let this race, which is unusual. Martin took the

:23:04.:23:15.

race right from the start, and now Alan has got to be quick for all of

:23:16.:23:20.

the race, because he does not have any distance on Martin.

:23:21.:23:30.

They are now approaching the halfway mark in this quarterfinal number

:23:31.:23:38.

three. That has been a devastating second 500 metres for Damir Martin

:23:39.:23:44.

from Croatia. Half a length up over Great Britain's Alan Campbell,

:23:45.:23:49.

Clearwater now. Alan on the back foot in terms of wanting to win

:23:50.:23:55.

this. He will have gone out wanting to make a mark, but a big statement

:23:56.:24:01.

out, step up to the semifinal. It will take a massive effort in this

:24:02.:24:08.

third 500 from Alan. Damir Martin has got significant class in terms

:24:09.:24:12.

of winning here. Previous world champion, Olympic silver medallist

:24:13.:24:18.

in the Quad. Not discounting Alan's Olympic bronze medal from 2012, but

:24:19.:24:21.

in the last couple of years he has been struggling for race definition,

:24:22.:24:28.

thinking about how you race, step up. The third's the third 500 will

:24:29.:24:37.

be strong. He was in great form for 2012, he has been searching for that

:24:38.:24:43.

form and how to improve. The one consolation is that Damir Martin is

:24:44.:24:45.

not that strong in the final third of the race. Alan could challenge

:24:46.:24:50.

him there. But that is not his forte either. It shows how competitive

:24:51.:24:58.

they are. This is the quickest quarterfinal so far. They are both

:24:59.:25:03.

trying to send a message to themselves as much as each other.

:25:04.:25:09.

Martin is making up for a poor heat, and Alan Campbell may not win the

:25:10.:25:14.

quarterfinal, but he is into the semifinal. A bit more daylight

:25:15.:25:21.

between Damir Martin and Alan Campbell.

:25:22.:25:32.

Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk taking the third spot if things stay like this.

:25:33.:25:40.

Damir Martin will qualify for the semifinals of the quickest scholar.

:25:41.:25:48.

The wind may have picked up, but it is a better message to send out.

:25:49.:26:04.

The Polish rower Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk is the under 23

:26:05.:26:12.

champion. They are starting to stretch out. He is still on it, but

:26:13.:26:17.

he is not sprinting hard, Damir Martin. He wants to keep the door

:26:18.:26:22.

closed on Alan Campbell in lane three. 125 metres out from the line.

:26:23.:26:32.

Quarterfinal number four, Alan Campbell did not get a look in at

:26:33.:26:38.

the end of the first 500 metres. It has all been about Damir Martin, the

:26:39.:26:41.

Croatian, who has taken the rate down. He will enjoy the final

:26:42.:26:50.

stretch. Likewise, Alan Campbell has brought it down, they are just

:26:51.:26:55.

paddling. The poll Natan Wegrzycki-Szymczyk, the former under

:26:56.:26:59.

23 world champion, all three safely through to the semifinal. They've

:27:00.:27:04.

taken the final three places in the semifinals. Alan in second place. It

:27:05.:27:12.

will be interesting to know how disappointed he is. He is trying to

:27:13.:27:21.

defend his bronze at the least from four years ago.

:27:22.:27:24.

He will be disappointed, occurs he would have had a better draw in the

:27:25.:27:33.

semifinal, but the racing starts in the semifinal. The reality is what

:27:34.:27:39.

he has done all season at the last four years, he will struggle to win

:27:40.:27:44.

a medal. If he can get into the final, it would be a great result. A

:27:45.:27:48.

medal may be there, but he has two pulled his punches to get into the

:27:49.:27:53.

final. When he is back to the hotel, does he think, good, or does he

:27:54.:27:59.

think, I have to improve on that, how am I going to do that? He would

:28:00.:28:08.

think about improving. The first two rounds, the first round and the

:28:09.:28:13.

quarterfinal, it is making sure you are in good shape, because you have

:28:14.:28:17.

four races. That is without going through a repechage. There could be

:28:18.:28:22.

five races. You have to paste your energy. Now, the women. For people

:28:23.:28:31.

who do not understand why Great Britain have teams in some events

:28:32.:28:37.

but not others, given the wealth of money and talent available, why do

:28:38.:28:41.

we not have a woman in this event? It is a different game, Alan is a

:28:42.:28:46.

different character from any other rower, you have to be more

:28:47.:28:52.

single-minded. We are a team sport in our setup, and a lot of countries

:28:53.:28:57.

can find one good athlete, so this is their only option. We put our

:28:58.:29:01.

efforts into the crew boats, and then a single school. You normally

:29:02.:29:07.

find one nutter who says, I will do the single, and does it. That is the

:29:08.:29:16.

reality. We can call Alan that! MS wake has walked past this, she is

:29:17.:29:19.

one of the favourites for the gold medal. It would have been an

:29:20.:29:24.

interesting point to put to her, but she has gone by. This is how she got

:29:25.:29:27.

on in the first women's quarterfinal.

:29:28.:29:39.

A clean start. This will be a humdinger. The defending Olympic

:29:40.:29:53.

champion Miroslava Knapkova alongside Emma Twigg, the world

:29:54.:29:58.

champion from 2014. Did not get selected in 2015, she was studying

:29:59.:30:03.

for a sports degree. The selectors chose to drop her. She came back

:30:04.:30:07.

this year, she had to get here via the European qualification regatta,

:30:08.:30:14.

which she welcomed doubly. Now Emma Twigg in lane three. Lane to inside

:30:15.:30:19.

her on top, Miroslava Knapkova. From Singapore, making her debut

:30:20.:30:58.

here, Aisyah Saiyidah. A former netball player before switching over

:30:59.:31:05.

to rolling. The races starting to develop as we thought it would. The

:31:06.:31:11.

defending Olympic champion, former world champion, Emma

:31:12.:31:30.

The former World Champion, Emma Twigg. And Knapkova, the defending

:31:31.:31:40.

champion, going head-to-head on this. Psychologically you want to

:31:41.:31:46.

win your quarterfinal to get the better Lane. Who knows what is going

:31:47.:31:52.

to happen? We have already lost one day, but the weather gods have been

:31:53.:32:01.

good to us today. Interesting that Knapkova took the initiative over

:32:02.:32:06.

Emma Twigg, but she has no comeback, and they are going stroke for

:32:07.:32:10.

stroke. This will be very telling as to where her confidences because she

:32:11.:32:15.

has not performed up to her high standards. Emma Twigg is on the

:32:16.:32:22.

comeback trail. It is a chance for her to establish herself among the

:32:23.:32:26.

leaders in the field and on the podium. The winner of this will get

:32:27.:32:30.

a huge amount of confidence going into the semifinal. Emma Twigg would

:32:31.:32:36.

like to have the edge in terms of winning confidence. In the last --

:32:37.:32:49.

in the last meeting, Knapkova came second, they were beaten by Kim

:32:50.:32:57.

Brennan, who will be coming down shortly. Between Brennan, Knapkova

:32:58.:33:07.

and Emma Twigg, they won the last titles, the the ones to watch. But

:33:08.:33:18.

the easy speed currently seems to be from Emma Twigg. 29-year-old Emma

:33:19.:33:25.

Twigg leading the defending champion Knapkova. Look at the gap at the

:33:26.:33:29.

halfway mark. Shows the difference in class and experience in this

:33:30.:33:42.

quarterfinal -- first quarterfinal. There is a massive difference. Emma

:33:43.:33:58.

Twigg is in far better form. Especially at the middle of the

:33:59.:34:03.

race, which is a long race. If you can be more efficient through the

:34:04.:34:12.

middle, you will be at the sharp end of the field coming into the sprint

:34:13.:34:16.

for the line. While you're watching Emma Twigg, this wonderful rhythmic

:34:17.:34:24.

stroke, moving along nicely. Korea in Lane number one.

:34:25.:34:41.

She is one of the leading athletes outside China, Kim Ye-Ji. We also

:34:42.:34:50.

have the Mexican. You see the difference between the

:34:51.:35:09.

different parts of the world as we watch Emma Twigg from New Zealand

:35:10.:35:16.

who has opened up a little bit of a deceptive lead. She has opened up a

:35:17.:35:23.

significant amount of water over Knapkova, but that is also to do

:35:24.:35:26.

with the fact that Knapkova will know that as soon as Emma Twigg came

:35:27.:35:33.

up and through, it was game over. So she's conserving energy for the

:35:34.:35:36.

semifinal. Using her experience and relying on it, no need to go

:35:37.:35:46.

together to the line. Both of them will be safe. It was important for

:35:47.:35:48.

the Emma Twigg Armageddon that she was out last year and made to

:35:49.:35:53.

qualify from the Zealand selectors. So lots of big statements being made

:35:54.:35:58.

to Emma Twigg, but most of all to herself. It is worth pointing out,

:35:59.:36:06.

ignoring the New Zealand and Czech Republic competitors, that the

:36:07.:36:17.

third-place qualifies for the first semifinals. To qualify into the

:36:18.:36:23.

semifinals for them is a big achievement. This is a country who

:36:24.:36:36.

had to re-establish themselves as a nation in the sport. They have now

:36:37.:36:39.

got two stars in the semifinal. The gap between the three leading

:36:40.:36:53.

scholars, Emma Twigg from New Zealand is just coming down. She is

:36:54.:36:58.

50 metres from the line. She's paddling, as is Knapkova. The crowd

:36:59.:37:12.

really appreciating the Mexican getting the third qualification spot

:37:13.:37:22.

as she comes into your picture. So, Knapkova is through safely. And

:37:23.:37:31.

Mexico have only sent two boats, both of them are in the single

:37:32.:37:38.

sculls. And the men and women are both through.

:37:39.:37:43.

Pitting the Mexican achievement to one side, does that look like a

:37:44.:37:51.

gold-medal winning boat for New Zealand? It is certainly a good

:37:52.:37:56.

start, and she did not get an automatic place so she had to go

:37:57.:37:58.

through the qualifying regatta to get here. If she does go on to win,

:37:59.:38:02.

that will be the first person that has come through the qualifiers to

:38:03.:38:04.

win a gold medal. Of the Australians, she is the reigning

:38:05.:38:21.

champion, but will want something to do with that in the final.

:38:22.:38:29.

The women's rugby was unbelievable last night, a great advert for the

:38:30.:38:36.

game. If the final does not get people watching,... A few years ago

:38:37.:38:43.

Katherine Grainger opted out of the bigger boats to go to single sculls,

:38:44.:38:48.

and she won a bronze medal. These days we know her more as a gold

:38:49.:38:51.

medallist from London 2012 in the London sculls. This is her fifth

:38:52.:38:55.

Olympic Games. She thought about packing it in, but the lure of being

:38:56.:39:03.

on the water was too great. I remember a lot about my first

:39:04.:39:22.

Olympics. The whole experience was phenomenal, and then the racing

:39:23.:39:28.

itself was intense, electric, exciting. At that point the women's

:39:29.:39:32.

team had never won an Olympic medal in any colour in any event, so to

:39:33.:39:36.

win a silver, we knew we were making history. The best performance ever.

:39:37.:39:44.

You get something tangible for your efforts, your blood, sweat and

:39:45.:39:49.

tears, something to take home for the rest of your life. It probably

:39:50.:39:52.

changed this bought for women from that moment onwards. Athens was

:39:53.:40:02.

special. In comparison to my first games there was more expectation. We

:40:03.:40:06.

knew that if we got it absolutely right there was a chance. The

:40:07.:40:15.

spirited and heartening row. It was not as joyful as Sydney, because I

:40:16.:40:20.

had got a silver already, and there was a sense that it could and should

:40:21.:40:26.

go better. Athens is probably one of my proudest medals, but it is

:40:27.:40:29.

slightly tinged with what might have been. It is cool, calm and collected

:40:30.:40:42.

from Katherine Grainger. Gauging summed up how much the sport had

:40:43.:40:48.

moved on in Britain over the past eight years. In Sydney, that medal

:40:49.:40:52.

was celebrated. Eight years on, that medal represented failure. Could

:40:53.:40:59.

this be the time to win gold? We lead the field for 16, 1700 metres

:41:00.:41:06.

and then to be passed in these dying stages was heartbreaking. We were

:41:07.:41:15.

broken women on that podium. And the emotions are flooding out. To walk

:41:16.:41:20.

away with the result you did not go to achieve honestly took me months

:41:21.:41:25.

to come to terms with. I really struggled with that, it affected me

:41:26.:41:29.

personally and professionally. I remember thinking, if I am going to

:41:30.:41:34.

do it again, I did not want to be driven by that ghost of Beijing.

:41:35.:41:37.

Going to London it was never about proving something right, it was a

:41:38.:41:45.

whole different experience. I did sleep the night before. As soon as

:41:46.:41:49.

the alarm went off, I knew instantly it was the Olympic final morning. A

:41:50.:41:56.

life to be defined in the last six and a half minutes. I knew where I

:41:57.:42:02.

wanted to be and the race was going as I wanted it to. I did not

:42:03.:42:04.

consciously connected to the fact we would win the Olympic Games. What

:42:05.:42:08.

we're seeing right now was that dreams do come true. Katherine

:42:09.:42:16.

Grainger and Anna Watkins, Olympic champions! Honestly, it was a dream

:42:17.:42:21.

come true. All these incredible highs and lows, tears and fighting

:42:22.:42:26.

back and getting up and dusting myself down, and starting again,

:42:27.:42:30.

every agonising second was worth it. Most people assume that would be the

:42:31.:42:34.

end, why would you go on beyond the perfect finish to the perfect story?

:42:35.:42:37.

I would have been happy to walk away, but I was not done. And you

:42:38.:42:46.

can see the next episode of the story at 2:20pm over on BBC One,

:42:47.:42:50.

when she and Vicki Thornley on the water. How do you view this in terms

:42:51.:42:58.

of the first race? It is hugely important, if you do not get to the

:42:59.:43:07.

final, you have no chance, to state the obvious. They finished sixth at

:43:08.:43:10.

last year's World Championships, so they seem to have stepped on a

:43:11.:43:14.

little bit. The coach has said they have gone well, so it has been

:43:15.:43:19.

positive. But they do need to move on from what they did on Saturday,

:43:20.:43:24.

on their first day. For them, the way this season has gone, they are

:43:25.:43:28.

in a pretty good place at the moment. Catherine will not want her

:43:29.:43:34.

in a pretty good place at the dream to end here today. You can see

:43:35.:43:37.

it at 2:20pm on BBC One. -- Katherine Grainger. There is a huge

:43:38.:43:41.

gulf between the best athletes and those who are not quite so good. But

:43:42.:43:46.

a few moments ago we had the women's single sculls, which was

:43:47.:43:50.

ridiculously tight. Three to get into the final, and only one to miss

:43:51.:43:56.

out, look bad for a second, third and fourth. Agonisingly, Denmark

:43:57.:44:01.

just about winning, but Canada and Zimbabwe making it it was Michelle

:44:02.:44:06.

Pearson from Bermuda who missed out going through by a nanosecond. And

:44:07.:44:12.

she is a resident of the UK. We mention that Emma Twigg was in good

:44:13.:44:17.

form. Here is her great Australian rival who is on the water at the

:44:18.:44:24.

moment. O back to James and Gary. -- let us go.

:44:25.:44:33.

We have Argentina in one, Kimberly Brown in from

:44:34.:44:43.

Australia, Ekaterina Karsten in lane three. And the Lithuanian, Lina

:44:44.:45:04.

Saltyte, in lane six. Kimberly Brennan is taking the early lead. In

:45:05.:45:13.

the next 500 we will see her consolidating that. What she has

:45:14.:45:16.

done is throw a spanner in the works. Before the heat, I said this

:45:17.:45:19.

is not only the World Champion There are other people in the race

:45:20.:45:33.

who would have expected not to be in the quarterfinals and not to have

:45:34.:45:41.

her as an outsider. She is the fastest of all people so far. She

:45:42.:45:47.

would be leading every other quarterfinal. That has put Ekaterina

:45:48.:45:56.

Karsten and the Chinese girl on the back foot straightaway. This is

:45:57.:46:03.

Ekaterina Karsten's seventh Olympic Games, two-time Olympic champion,

:46:04.:46:08.

one-time silver medallist, bronze in 2008. She was a bronze medallist in

:46:09.:46:16.

Barcelona. There she is, Ekaterina Karsten, 44 years old, still mixing

:46:17.:46:20.

it up. She is a length down on Kim Brennan. The world champion. She

:46:21.:46:27.

will know how to work so bored. She did not storm out in the heat, she

:46:28.:46:34.

made sure she qualified, and she will make sure she qualifies for the

:46:35.:46:35.

semifinal, and sneak in for the final. She has one or two hard races

:46:36.:46:42.

in her. She does not want to use them up even -- early. She started

:46:43.:46:52.

for the Soviet Union, and share's she is now competing for Belarus.

:46:53.:47:00.

Interestingly for Ekaterina Karsten, she has held Kim Brennan through the

:47:01.:47:08.

last 500 metres. The lead is one length. From her point of view, she

:47:09.:47:18.

has checked the move. This is where they will put in a big push, tried

:47:19.:47:23.

to break. Kim Brennan will try to break Ekaterina Karsten. For

:47:24.:47:27.

Ekaterina Karsten, it is all about qualifying. She will not have the

:47:28.:47:38.

speed in the early stages. It is just qualify, stepped to the final,

:47:39.:47:41.

and that is when you have your last race. We might write off her speed

:47:42.:47:48.

to early. Kim Brennan and Ekaterina Karsten would be first and second in

:47:49.:47:52.

any other quarterfinal, that is how fast this race is. Ekaterina Karsten

:47:53.:48:04.

is being challenged by Duan Jingli. Will she fight this off, or will she

:48:05.:48:10.

think, I have one hard race, I don't want to use it up now? Kim Brennan

:48:11.:48:15.

undefeated this year, world champion last year. Until the heat! In terms

:48:16.:48:22.

of the World Cup is. With the conditions as they were for the

:48:23.:48:29.

heat, it was a lottery, it was just survival of the fittest to qualify

:48:30.:48:34.

through. She is putting it right, putting her authority on this fourth

:48:35.:48:38.

quarterfinal. There is no point in just being able to win in flat

:48:39.:48:45.

water. Floodwater, she is an amazing athlete. But suddenly it opens up.

:48:46.:48:56.

We saw a move from Kim Brennan, she has moved out from Ekaterina

:48:57.:49:00.

Karsten. Duan Jingli has moved on against Ekaterina Karsten. The

:49:01.:49:04.

Chinese coming right back at it in lane four. We have Sanita Puspure

:49:05.:49:15.

from Ireland as well. If it stays like this, these three will go to

:49:16.:49:21.

the semifinal. Sanita Puspure third at the opening World Cup regatta

:49:22.:49:22.

this year. For those that are interested in

:49:23.:49:39.

times, the quickest quarterfinal so far is seven minutes 27. This will

:49:40.:49:49.

give an indication of whether the heat where she came third was a blip

:49:50.:49:53.

or whether that is her form, not where it was in the last race. She

:49:54.:49:59.

looks to be where she left off in's. A race going on between Ekaterina

:50:00.:50:07.

Karsten and Duan Jingli. Ekaterina Karsten is holding her off. Coming

:50:08.:50:17.

up strong now. We now have Sanita Puspure, she has to get something

:50:18.:50:25.

out of this. The rate is going up. I learned up on 38 strokes per minute,

:50:26.:50:28.

she is coming up hard on Ekaterina Karsten. Ekaterina Karsten will let

:50:29.:50:33.

the Chinese slip through. Can she hold off the Irish rower? Brennan is

:50:34.:50:41.

safely through. China comes through, and Ekaterina Karsten just getting

:50:42.:50:43.

the third spot. Sanita Puspure will be bitterly disappointed, so close

:50:44.:50:52.

on the line. She left it too late. She had to go earlier. It concert in

:50:53.:51:03.

it into the finish line. Quite a finish for Belarus and China. They

:51:04.:51:05.

through safely to the semifinal. What a way to celebrate Kim

:51:06.:51:16.

Brennan's birthday. We will leave the rolling. Thank you to John and

:51:17.:51:22.

Steve for taking us through the action. Katherine Grainger and Vicki

:51:23.:51:27.

Thornley will go in the women's doubles later, 2:20pm on BBC One.

:51:28.:51:38.

From Copacabana, let's bring things back to the Olympic Park, because we

:51:39.:51:45.

found some people who were drawing attention to themselves. I wonder

:51:46.:51:51.

who these guys are supporting. Big up Germany, right? And a got your

:51:52.:52:01.

costumes. What is this in aid of? We are going to the handball. I did not

:52:02.:52:08.

understand your question! I will ask why you decided to wear these

:52:09.:52:11.

wonderful costumes. Just to support the German team. As long as we are

:52:12.:52:17.

still young and healthy we want to make sure we can fit in these. You

:52:18.:52:23.

upgraded from London 2012, because you were just painted them. Yes,

:52:24.:52:30.

this time we thought it is more visible to wear these things. Is it

:52:31.:52:39.

hot? Yes! But it seemed like a good idea. You look fantastic. If you are

:52:40.:52:43.

going to the handball, get your spare costume for me later! Go Team

:52:44.:52:56.

GB! Go Germany! Well done, you guys! They are attracting wonderful

:52:57.:52:59.

attention. We are going to talk about a sport that Brazil holds

:53:00.:53:05.

almost as highly as football. It is volleyball, the women are aiming for

:53:06.:53:08.

a third consecutive Olympic title, the men of the world number one,

:53:09.:53:13.

that they are only the silver medallists, they were beaten in 2012

:53:14.:53:18.

by Russia. That is the team we are going to watch now. What did you

:53:19.:53:23.

think of them? I am devastated I left my national flag suit at home.

:53:24.:53:30.

Did not get the memo! I am glad you did, I am looking forward to

:53:31.:53:35.

tomorrow! I will have to get that shrunk in the wash! Argentina

:53:36.:53:41.

against Russia, Olympic champions Russia, how do you see this? It is a

:53:42.:53:46.

Russia victory theoretically. Argentina have only one bronze ones,

:53:47.:53:53.

in 1988, they have won world bronze medal, they are not one of the

:53:54.:53:57.

superpowers. Russia are, London 2012 champions. You look at the Brazil,

:53:58.:54:02.

big indoor volleyball nation. And Poland. Russia would be the

:54:03.:54:08.

favourites, but in the World League in June, the last time they met,

:54:09.:54:12.

Argentina beat them for the first time, and it was not even close,

:54:13.:54:17.

Russia were off their game, they called it a slap in the face.

:54:18.:54:23.

Argentina have a chance. Let's see if we can hold on the face slapping

:54:24.:54:28.

this afternoon. There are two groups in the men's competition.

:54:29.:54:36.

Human chimp Poland, the world number two. -- you mentioned Poland.

:54:37.:54:54.

Poland will be the ones to beat. It looks relatively convincing when you

:54:55.:55:04.

look at the results, but each of those contests was closer than these

:55:05.:55:15.

teams were -- wanted. Even Argentina against Iran, Iran are coached by an

:55:16.:55:20.

Argentinian, they kept in touch with Argentina more than they would have

:55:21.:55:24.

been comfortable with. Each of these teams will think a convincing

:55:25.:55:27.

victory today is what they need to kick off their Olympic campaign.

:55:28.:55:32.

Argentina will think, we beat them in June, never before, and now we

:55:33.:55:37.

can sense some weaknesses. Let's get down there, the Maracanazinho, to

:55:38.:55:43.

see these teams in action. We join it in the second set, it is first to

:55:44.:55:46.

25 in the early sets. Russia have the mini break. They

:55:47.:56:34.

will want to build on this. Argentina got away to a similar

:56:35.:56:37.

start in the previous set. And moved away nicely. That was very long.

:56:38.:57:10.

I don't know what has happened in the break between sets, but the

:57:11.:57:45.

Russians look a different team. The execution much better. That has

:57:46.:57:48.

forced the Argentinians to call a time-out. Their coach has not mucked

:57:49.:57:54.

around. He wants to talk things through.

:57:55.:58:20.

The coach has been around a long time, he has coached international

:58:21.:58:28.

volleyball since 1981. The assistant to the national team for eight years

:58:29.:58:31.

before leaving to Italy and coaching their national team. He was such a

:58:32.:58:38.

good side through the 1990s, they got silver at the 1996 Olympics. A

:58:39.:58:42.

double world champion with them as well. He coached the women's team of

:58:43.:58:50.

Italy and the Czech Republic, Spain, Iran, an amazing record. Now he is

:58:51.:58:57.

back coaching his native team, since 2014. A quick attack this time, he

:58:58.:59:14.

finished it nicely, Sebastian Sole. Squeezed it between those players

:59:15.:59:15.

nicely. Great stuff. Cannot get that one

:59:16.:59:26.

back. Will not give up chasing any ball,

:59:27.:59:46.

Facundo Conte?. Great defence from both teams in that rally.

:59:47.:00:04.

There has been an infringement at the net. It will be Russia. It looks

:00:05.:00:13.

like it has been an infringement at the net. Four hits. Against

:00:14.:00:23.

Argentina. It just bumped the hand of the

:00:24.:00:45.

Russian player at the net, so Argentina get another point. Six out

:00:46.:00:56.

of ten for Bruno Lima so far. Bakun again. Five out of five for

:00:57.:01:20.

him. So far, the Russians have done

:01:21.:01:42.

exactly what Argentina did to them in the first set. They got the early

:01:43.:01:46.

lead and have moved away and are now won control of their set. Still a

:01:47.:01:52.

long way to go, but a 5-point advantage is a healthy one. It gives

:01:53.:02:02.

them the luxury to push things a fraction more.

:02:03.:02:12.

They are looking less comfortable than they were earlier.

:02:13.:02:55.

Tetyukhin with a left-handed shot. And Argentina get the point.

:02:56.:03:12.

An infringement header against Argentina. Four point margin again.

:03:13.:03:30.

Russia nailed it. Starting to use number 12, Bakun, very effectively.

:03:31.:03:37.

It was not so evident in the first set. He's really coming alive now.

:03:38.:03:52.

That was all set up by Bakun's serve. One Rally probably longer

:03:53.:04:00.

than the Russians expected, but it was a terrific serve, putting

:04:01.:04:01.

Argentina on the back foot. A 6-point advantage to Russia. They

:04:02.:04:14.

have moved through the set nicely. Russia have turned the match on its

:04:15.:04:51.

head. 25-18 was the first set score in favour of Argentina. But the

:04:52.:04:57.

Russians have quickly put that poor start behind them and have come out

:04:58.:04:59.

strong in the second set. 26% spike statistic for Russia,

:05:00.:05:22.

currently going at 62% in the second set. And Argentina have gone

:05:23.:05:28.

backwards and that area big-time. Only 11% so far in this second set.

:05:29.:05:43.

Gonzales with the bumper. It is in. -- bump. That is a great finish.

:05:44.:05:47.

Just on the line from Conte. He not only controlled it, but put

:05:48.:06:03.

the ball in the right spot, Gonzales. And Conte was very

:06:04.:06:07.

impressive. Russia are very efficient side.

:06:08.:06:23.

Remember, Argentina have used the two time-outs will stop there is

:06:24.:06:24.

still a long way to go. Argentina have only scored four of

:06:25.:06:53.

the main points. The other five have come from errors. Finding it very

:06:54.:07:08.

difficult to win points. That was not accurate at all. And Russia took

:07:09.:07:12.

full advantage. Argentina will be most concerned with that loose shot.

:07:13.:07:23.

They cannot afford to make mistakes like that against quality opposition

:07:24.:07:24.

like Russia. Not far away now. In the first set,

:07:25.:07:50.

those blocks were going in for a Argentina. Not in the second.

:07:51.:08:14.

Argentina pick up the tenth point. The sixth error in this set from

:08:15.:08:26.

Russia. Only four of their points have been earned, the rest were from

:08:27.:08:33.

the opponent errors. Again a block goes wide. Crush a 1-point closer to

:08:34.:08:41.

squaring up this match. -- Russia 1-point closer.

:08:42.:09:08.

Gonzalez is checking in for Argentina. Both of the Gonzalez

:09:09.:09:14.

players are on. That particular shot from Volkov,

:09:15.:09:50.

the tall and lanky player for Russia. This time Argentina get it

:09:51.:09:55.

right. They were struggling in that area to win points in the second

:09:56.:10:10.

set. This time Crer gets a point for Argentina, these points have been

:10:11.:10:12.

few and far between for Argentina. That is the first successful block

:10:13.:10:32.

for Argentina in this set. It has taken 30 points in total before they

:10:33.:10:34.

have run through Crer. They have given it away through a

:10:35.:10:48.

fault. This bike was just long. Conte could

:10:49.:11:31.

have executed that better. It was a big opportunity. Not to be. -- the

:11:32.:11:34.

spike. Volvich did not get it right. Just a

:11:35.:11:58.

word for Russia. The healthy buffer is certainly

:11:59.:12:15.

helped by the service fault from Argentina this time. Russia are now

:12:16.:12:21.

five points away from locking up this match at one set each. Russia

:12:22.:12:25.

are the defending champions. Tetyukhin check back in. That was a

:12:26.:13:03.

bonus point! Tetyukhin was confused by the player crossing in front of

:13:04.:13:12.

him. He must read it entirely. It has not taken long for Russia to

:13:13.:13:16.

bounce back. Argentina are going to keep plugging

:13:17.:13:39.

away, they will not give up. Palacios checks in for the first

:13:40.:14:14.

time. He plays in Argentina. A lot of characters in the crowd for this

:14:15.:14:19.

one. Great to see such enthusiastic support for both teams. This match

:14:20.:14:28.

is very much in the balance. Even though Russia have been dominating

:14:29.:14:34.

this second set, Argentina's combination in the first set was

:14:35.:14:40.

impressive. As we head into the third set, it is hard to choose.

:14:41.:14:44.

Russia likely to close out the second set. Those were the sort of

:14:45.:14:54.

blocks going wrong for Argentina in the first set. They have still only

:14:55.:14:58.

had one successful block in this set.

:14:59.:15:20.

A very good serve, had Argentina on the back foot. Ezequiel Palacios did

:15:21.:15:28.

well to converted into a point. The block is effective. Artem

:15:29.:15:59.

Volvich. No wonder he is smiling. Very pleased with his effort. That

:16:00.:16:03.

was Argentina's point for the taking. Artem Volvich has given his

:16:04.:16:08.

team six set points. There it is, it is going to be

:16:09.:16:33.

Russia who have the second set. Argentina in disarray in the last

:16:34.:16:39.

point. It is going to be Russia who have bounced back effectively. It

:16:40.:16:45.

was 25-18 in the first set, the match has flipped around.

:16:46.:16:49.

The Olympic champions levelling things at the Maracanazinho. Russia

:16:50.:16:57.

and Argentina are tied. We will leave this one on BBC Four, you can

:17:54.:18:03.

That guy gets around! It is only 10:20am here. That means 2:20pm in

:18:04.:18:15.

the UK. But it is good to see that the beer stand is well and truly

:18:16.:18:21.

open. The fans here are figuring out which cup they want to get. Also

:18:22.:18:27.

keeping themselves refreshed. It is a warm day. The fluids flowing. They

:18:28.:18:32.

are enjoying the first summer Olympic Games in South America,

:18:33.:18:36.

which is a surprise, when you consider the sights and sounds of

:18:37.:18:42.

Brazil and the Rio Olympic history. You have a perfect combination.

:18:43.:20:09.

We are so lucky to be here. There were questions about whether the

:20:10.:20:17.

fans would get involved locally. They really have, not least because

:20:18.:20:23.

you may have heard about the story of Brazil's first Olympic medal, in

:20:24.:20:33.

the 57 kilo judo. She grew up in one of the most notorious favelas, they

:20:34.:20:37.

call it the city of God. All the way from there, she comes to her home

:20:38.:20:41.

Olympic Games, she is a stone's throw away from home, with Olympic

:20:42.:20:50.

Golf Course. Fascinating. I am back. Talking about the locals, we will

:20:51.:20:57.

talk about Veitch volleyball. There is a Brazilian pair in action on

:20:58.:21:05.

Copacabana Beach, involving a pair, one of them is very local, he is

:21:06.:21:11.

only a mile away from the stadium, so it is a nice commute to work for

:21:12.:21:14.

him. He is involved with his partner. They are playing the

:21:15.:21:21.

Canadian pair. Let's go to Copacabana.

:21:22.:21:35.

We will join it in the second set. The Brazilians are leading after

:21:36.:21:46.

having won the first set. The home fans will enjoy this.

:21:47.:22:07.

Just a few more higher percentages for the attacks from the Brazilians.

:22:08.:22:18.

Plenty of personalities in the crowd as well. Always a great atmosphere

:22:19.:22:33.

at the Beach Volleyball Arena. It is his eighth successful attack.

:22:34.:22:51.

14 out of 18 for Brazil so far, not bad numbers. A good touch from

:22:52.:23:03.

Saxton. Nine from 13 on the attack. Them.

:23:04.:23:18.

Evandro down the line that time. It looks as though we will check it.

:23:19.:23:35.

It did look to be in from my angle. We will have a better luck in a

:23:36.:23:41.

moment. The challenge was unsuccessful, so

:23:42.:24:08.

the right call was made. Keeping a watchful eye on the ball.

:24:09.:24:26.

Well put away. Chaim Schalk not able to dig out the floating kill at the

:24:27.:24:33.

net. They have given their fans something

:24:34.:25:17.

to cheer about. What about the work from Chaim Schalk, and then the dive

:25:18.:25:20.

from Benjamin Saxton. Brilliantly scrambled. That is enough to lift

:25:21.:25:24.

their spirits. That has landed in. Ninth successful

:25:25.:25:33.

attack from Evandro Junior. The speed of that jump serve was

:25:34.:26:03.

like a bullet. Benjamin Saxton never saw it coming.

:26:04.:26:24.

Some heated discussion here. A challenge has been requested. As to

:26:25.:26:36.

where the serve was sent from. Was he in court? Right in the corner.

:26:37.:26:49.

The left foot landing outside the court. It was successful.

:26:50.:27:05.

The ball was served out of the field of play from Evandro Junior.

:27:06.:27:14.

A bit of heat has come into this contest. Some pepper on the spike

:27:15.:27:52.

from Evandro Junior. Ten macro puts it away. -- temp macro puts it away.

:27:53.:28:17.

It was right in the corner. Centimetre perfect.

:28:18.:28:33.

Evandro Junior not able to throw a hand-out.

:28:34.:28:47.

12 serves so far for Chaim Schalk, one fault, no aces. For successful

:28:48.:29:03.

attacks. Beautiful blog from Benjamin Saxton.

:29:04.:29:13.

Straight down the line from Pedro Solberg.

:29:14.:29:37.

That is a rare ever -- error for Evandro Junior. Even though we have

:29:38.:29:49.

seen a couple of bullets early on in this set, he has hit 18 at five

:29:50.:29:57.

faults from 12 serves. That isn't in the Canadians can exploit.

:29:58.:30:17.

Saxton, four faults from 12. Still alive. Put away by Schalk.

:30:18.:30:54.

Higher statistics on the attacks at the moment. Not by a great deal.

:30:55.:31:03.

Brazil's scrambling to stay on the point. Evandro stuck it in.

:31:04.:31:31.

Pretends attacking shot out of 14 for Evandro. Die in the middle, the

:31:32.:31:43.

change up, and the Canadians did not see it coming. The second ace. Three

:31:44.:31:50.

for the Brazilians, two coming from Evandro. The Canadians are yet to

:31:51.:32:03.

score any at all. This is the time they need to lift.

:32:04.:32:15.

It was out of play. Crucial part of the set, and the crowd know it. The

:32:16.:32:29.

fastest serve from Evandro, 88 kilometres per hour. We will see if

:32:30.:32:35.

he can get past that. A similar serve down the line. The second not

:32:36.:32:45.

successful. Sixth fault for Evandro. He goes for everything, but there is

:32:46.:32:48.

always plenty of margin for error. Slapping the top of the net. A great

:32:49.:33:29.

second set, and other floating serve. Evandro could not read it. --

:33:30.:33:59.

That has missed. Canada lead 12-9 in the second set, and sit down with

:34:00.:34:09.

the finish line insight. It is picture perfect. It is what

:34:10.:35:11.

you would expect from a video. -- travel video. One of the more

:35:12.:35:17.

colourful venues is the beach volleyball venue at Copacabana. Not

:35:18.:35:21.

so colourful, this serve from the Canadians. It has been topsy-turvy.

:35:22.:35:32.

Canada have done a fantastic job to keep this alive.

:35:33.:35:59.

A point that was fought out very close to the net.

:36:00.:36:10.

He keeps the margin at two. The 11th successful scoring shot from Saxton.

:36:11.:36:36.

Evandro has been hit and miss in the serving department, but has been

:36:37.:36:45.

excellent in the rallies, with 11 spikes put away.

:36:46.:37:00.

So far, Schalk working close to the net. Pedro is lurking, but Saxton

:37:01.:37:07.

was not intimidated by that. He is hard to beat, Pedro. A feature

:37:08.:38:20.

of today has been Solberg at the net. And it was well read again.

:38:21.:38:39.

Schalk sets up Saxton, and it landed in. They just keep their nose in

:38:40.:38:52.

front. A thrilling second set. Time-out is called. You would be

:38:53.:39:02.

hard-pressed to predict who will take out this second set.

:39:03.:39:15.

Level pegging with aces. -- level pegging with a tax.

:39:16.:39:40.

That was kept alive by the Brazilians, but they were

:39:41.:40:15.

scrambling. Canada hold on for dear life at 16-14.

:40:16.:40:24.

Some enterprising work from Solberg with the header. The Canadians

:40:25.:40:39.

cannot sit down. A crucial part of the match. The tenth attacking shot

:40:40.:41:05.

from Solberg. So much experience a great youth career. And put away by

:41:06.:41:12.

Schalk. They had a big year, Schalk and

:41:13.:41:42.

Saxton. They reached podiums twice, moving up two places in points

:41:43.:41:46.

standings. Nothing to lose here. They were the 16th seed coming into

:41:47.:41:52.

Rio. But they have to get past the number four seeds. This is a

:41:53.:41:53.

hard-fought second set. This means a lot to the Canadians

:41:54.:42:18.

because they narrowly missed the spot for the London Olympics. They

:42:19.:42:26.

would beaten in a match to reach the London Olympic Games. They are here

:42:27.:42:33.

and playing for their lives in the second set. Three to go to level it

:42:34.:42:51.

up. Kept alive by the Canadians. And the local side find themselves with

:42:52.:42:53.

Canada leading. Evandro signalling to Solberg, but

:42:54.:43:18.

he did not read it. It is always dangerous, Solberg with

:43:19.:43:34.

a spike up the middle. Brute force that time.

:43:35.:44:07.

Perceived pressure from Solberg, did the trick.

:44:08.:44:21.

Saxton heading down the percentages. Brazil with a late rally in the

:44:22.:44:25.

second set. Evandro kept it alive. The Canadians kept it in play and

:44:26.:44:45.

did brilliantly. High drama in the second set here at Copacabana.

:44:46.:45:08.

Challenge has been requested by the Brazilians. We're about to find out

:45:09.:45:16.

the result. And successful. Set point for Canada. -- unsuccessful.

:45:17.:45:27.

His second ace, what a time to bring it up. It is one said apiece, we go

:45:28.:45:32.

into a decider. 1-1 in Copacabana between Canada and

:45:33.:45:45.

the home nation. We will catch up with the final and deciding set with

:45:46.:45:51.

that later on BBC Four. That will be one to watch. We will keep you

:45:52.:45:56.

abreast of everything on Copacabana B J. But not before we bring you up

:45:57.:46:03.

to date with equestrian. You will have seen yesterday William Fox-Pitt

:46:04.:46:08.

and the British eventing team, it was not going very well in the

:46:09.:46:14.

cross-country. He had been leading after two days of dressage in the

:46:15.:46:19.

individual, he then had a run out on two of the jumps, and unfortunately

:46:20.:46:24.

for the rest of the team it was not a good day" country. They are in the

:46:25.:46:30.

final event. Great Britain coming in in eighth place. William Fox-Pitt is

:46:31.:46:40.

22nd in the individual event. They will keep abreast of this over on

:46:41.:46:47.

BBC One. That is where due be able to watch it. They were successful in

:46:48.:46:57.

London 2012, and hopefully it will pick up for them. They came away

:46:58.:47:03.

with five medals back then. It was not too hard for them to get their

:47:04.:47:07.

companions, the horses, around in London, but here we are about 6000

:47:08.:47:13.

miles away. How do they get their forces from the UK to us here? They

:47:14.:47:20.

need a lot of luggage and a lot of in-flight attention.

:47:21.:47:32.

We have five lovely horses, they are fit, well, healthy, and we are

:47:33.:47:37.

looking forward to seeing how they get on. You think about putting a

:47:38.:47:43.

horse on an aeroplane, but they are used to travelling, they are

:47:44.:47:46.

relaxed. I have been to look at them to make sure they are in good health

:47:47.:47:54.

and ready to go. This is an interesting flight, because of where

:47:55.:47:58.

it is going and who it is for, but it is bread-and-butter stuff for us.

:47:59.:48:07.

Certainly on a weekly basis. At the moment he is really chilled, he

:48:08.:48:10.

thinks he is going on a ferry, that is the only thing he has been on. He

:48:11.:48:16.

does not have any idea what is happening. He has a suit on that

:48:17.:48:20.

will help him with his muscle recovery whilst he travels. The

:48:21.:48:27.

flight is 11 hours 40 minutes, plus the standing around. Potentially we

:48:28.:48:31.

could be travelling around for 24 hours, so it is exhausting mentally

:48:32.:48:35.

and physically. I am struggling with the concept of handing him over to

:48:36.:48:39.

someone, I have been there every step of the way with him. It will be

:48:40.:48:43.

hard to say to somebody, here is my horse. He is young, this will be the

:48:44.:48:50.

first time he has flown, and he is quite high maintenance. He is a

:48:51.:48:58.

believer. We don't have the resources and support of the big

:48:59.:49:02.

teams like the Brits, the Australians, the Germans, so it is

:49:03.:49:04.

important we take responsibility ourselves. The Irish horses have

:49:05.:49:14.

spent the past seven or eight years travelling all over the world, they

:49:15.:49:16.

are seasoned travellers, very relaxed. When we are on a plane with

:49:17.:49:22.

them, they normally travel well, they are normally settled. I go

:49:23.:49:27.

around with them and give them water regularly, check they are eating and

:49:28.:49:32.

drinking and look healthy. They have had their temperature taken, so we

:49:33.:49:36.

are checking their general health. It is important they don't spend too

:49:37.:49:40.

many hours with their heads held up. Every couple of hours we feed them

:49:41.:49:46.

off the ground so they can have the natural mechanism. It helps prevent

:49:47.:49:51.

travel sickness. There you are. He is loaded, eating his hay, so I

:49:52.:50:04.

am happy. He was so good on the flight. The

:50:05.:50:30.

horse has travelled really well, it was a 12 hour flight. It exhibit of

:50:31.:50:35.

time to unload the horses, then we get them into the holding Corel and

:50:36.:50:44.

transfer them onto trucks. From there, in convoy to the venue with a

:50:45.:50:50.

police escort. That is a nice trip. The time difference is only four

:50:51.:50:55.

hours, so it is not a lot. We use the first few days of them to catch

:50:56.:50:58.

up on any rest they might have missed. GB, GB! We have got fans

:50:59.:51:11.

here! Thank you! Even if it is just the one! GB have a bit of work to do

:51:12.:51:19.

in the equestrian. The closing stages of the event will be shown on

:51:20.:51:25.

BBC One later. We will go to the Beach Volleyball Arena at Copacabana

:51:26.:51:27.

in a moment to catch up with the deciding set between Rizal and

:51:28.:51:33.

Canada. Not before we talk about rugby sevens, it is making its

:51:34.:51:40.

Olympic debut here. Great Britain, the women's team came in with high

:51:41.:51:44.

hopes, they were fourth in the World Series coming into this and hope for

:51:45.:51:48.

a medal, but after an agonising match against Canada last night, it

:51:49.:51:53.

was another fourth place. Canada got the bronze medal, Australia took the

:51:54.:52:00.

gold medal, ahead of New Zealand. Kudos to Australia, the first ever

:52:01.:52:03.

rugby sevens gold medal at the Olympic Games. Despite the

:52:04.:52:07.

disappointment for Britain, Rugby sevens has picked up down here. It

:52:08.:52:12.

has got a huge fan base around the world, and maybe after its Olympics

:52:13.:52:17.

bout it will pick up even more of an audience.

:52:18.:52:22.

The huge complex is going to host lots of sports during the Olympics,

:52:23.:52:27.

and this one is going to be for rugby sevens at. It is a long time

:52:28.:52:32.

since rugby of any description has been in the Olympics, so we are here

:52:33.:52:35.

to witness a piece of history. Team GB will be part of that as the women

:52:36.:52:39.

start their competition. The first try of their Olympic

:52:40.:52:52.

history. The first obstacle overcome for the British team.

:52:53.:52:56.

Is this the biggest event she will compete in? That is likely to be

:52:57.:53:02.

true. She has played in other events, but the Olympics is a level

:53:03.:53:07.

above, it has been fantastic. It is buzzing, it is great it has been

:53:08.:53:12.

highlighted and showcased. It is a fantastic set piece. How nervous is

:53:13.:53:19.

it, watching her run out? It is really nerve wracking, but my

:53:20.:53:22.

parents find it more difficult. She scored two tries, my mum cried. I

:53:23.:53:28.

was holding her up with one hand and waving the flag with the other. So

:53:29.:53:33.

proud, she is amazing. What is this team capable of? A gold medal. We

:53:34.:53:38.

have world-class players in there, Emily Scarlet, Abbey Brown, Jasmine

:53:39.:53:47.

Joyce, she started with BA year ago, quality.

:53:48.:53:54.

This is more than just a British story. For this sport, this

:53:55.:53:59.

competition could take it to a whole new audience. It is such a good move

:54:00.:54:06.

to bring it in, it is so simple to follow, instead of 15 people

:54:07.:54:09.

thumping around the pitch, seven bashing everywhere at the speed of

:54:10.:54:13.

light, the game of rugby will get a huge stage to perform. This will go

:54:14.:54:18.

right around the world. Can you see the Olympics becoming the must win

:54:19.:54:27.

title? It is already there. The World Cup, which is not as sick of

:54:28.:54:30.

good for the fifteens, has been moved to accommodate this. I can see

:54:31.:54:36.

the game going from strength to strength on the back of the catalyst

:54:37.:54:40.

of being here. There has been lots of talk about new sports here, when

:54:41.:54:45.

tennis started in 1988 the best players were not there. Golf has not

:54:46.:54:50.

covered itself in glory in the last few weeks, so it is wonderful to

:54:51.:54:54.

have been here and seen a sport make its debut and hit the ground

:54:55.:54:59.

running. Is it exciting for you? Is it a chance for rugby? The only

:55:00.:55:05.

thing I regret, I am not young enough to have played in it.

:55:06.:55:09.

It has been one of the success stories of the Olympics so far. Who

:55:10.:55:17.

will pick up the success in the men's competition? It kicks off

:55:18.:55:23.

today. Watching it all for us down there is Jill Douglas, alongside

:55:24.:55:29.

Gareth Davies. Looking forward to this.

:55:30.:55:35.

Very much so. It is morning here. It is a beautiful sunny morning. They

:55:36.:55:46.

are going to have their work cut out, running around at speed,

:55:47.:55:48.

because it is energy sapping. Gareth sits on the board of world rugby,

:55:49.:55:53.

and all of the world rugby people here enjoying this event, big

:55:54.:55:57.

smiles, because it has been one of the highlights so far. Very much so,

:55:58.:56:02.

everybody is delighted to have a debut, as the 90 odd years back at

:56:03.:56:08.

the Olympics. It is important to make a strong statement in terms of

:56:09.:56:13.

quality of play and appeal not just to the rugby fan but to general

:56:14.:56:17.

funds. 12,000 people yesterday watching the later stages of the

:56:18.:56:23.

women's competition. Everybody would have been delighted about the

:56:24.:56:26.

entertainment and quality culminating a fantastic final. It

:56:27.:56:31.

was thrilling. You think about the origins of sevens, it was staged to

:56:32.:56:39.

raise money at Melrose, and it has gone from strength to strength. It

:56:40.:56:43.

was always popular in the Scottish Borders, but to see it on the world

:56:44.:56:46.

stage, why has it gained such popularity? It is important for the

:56:47.:56:51.

game that that is the case, that is why this is important. Rugby

:56:52.:56:59.

traditionalists, we have to move on and cater for different forms of the

:57:00.:57:03.

sport. The old days of men playing 15 a side, it is still hugely

:57:04.:57:08.

important, but it is important we cater for other people to play the

:57:09.:57:13.

shortened version. You don't need to be an expert, because rugby can be

:57:14.:57:18.

quite technical and compensated. With sevens, the impartial observer

:57:19.:57:23.

can see the athleticism, skill, speed, strength, wrapped into one,

:57:24.:57:28.

without the technicalities and finer detail. It is one element of a new

:57:29.:57:36.

format, we have to cater... You look at each rugby, midweek rugby,

:57:37.:57:39.

shortened versions, that is something that all sports are

:57:40.:57:44.

facing, golf is a classic example, the challenges it faces. Rugby is no

:57:45.:57:53.

exception. This is critical. We have seen the success of T20 cricket as

:57:54.:58:00.

well. The women's competition went with the form book, rate Britain

:58:01.:58:05.

ranked fourth and finishing fourth, it is a better place to finish. --

:58:06.:58:16.

aid its place. They came that close. It is different from losing a World

:58:17.:58:19.

Series competition, you are losing an Olympic medal. It cost to take.

:58:20.:58:25.

They did not play to their best, considering they have beaten Canada

:58:26.:58:33.

with the previous round, and all credit to Canada, they worked out

:58:34.:58:36.

their style of play, and the best teams came to the fore in the final.

:58:37.:58:42.

It was an astounding final, with Australia becoming the stronger

:58:43.:58:47.

side, and that was the case in the final. And the men's team, they are

:58:48.:58:55.

first up, the first men's sevens team will be Australia against

:58:56.:58:59.

France, but Fiji are the ones to watch. How will Australia get on? On

:59:00.:59:05.

form, they should start off with a bang. But sevens is so

:59:06.:59:11.

unpredictable. An important game for Great Britain against Kenya, we are

:59:12.:59:15.

in the same group as New Zealand, and so we have to start with a bang.

:59:16.:59:20.

Kenya are a strong sevens outfit. They play Kenya in the third match,

:59:21.:59:26.

then Japan later, and New Zealand tomorrow. We will get under way now,

:59:27.:59:29.

Australia against France. Good morning. The first day of the

:59:30.:59:48.

men's sevens competition. Australia, champions of the women's sevens, and

:59:49.:59:53.

the men of Australia first up against France. A clash of two of

:59:54.:00:03.

the traditional rugby powers, but this is very much the truncated,

:00:04.:00:06.

fast flowing format. They feature is the number of

:00:07.:00:48.

penalties given at the breakdown. Quickly taken. Another feature, how

:00:49.:00:50.

quickly the penalties are taken. Good morning, Clive. Good morning,

:00:51.:01:15.

Eddie. It is fitting that Australia stopped this after the women's team

:01:16.:01:20.

won the gold medal last night. Both of the programmes have been put

:01:21.:01:24.

together over a four-year period. This is the number five team against

:01:25.:01:30.

the number 18. A promising start by both sides. The seed's speed is

:01:31.:01:34.

crucial. Looks like the Tory kick to touch.

:01:35.:02:06.

We saw practically none of that yesterday. That was a first. Have

:02:07.:02:12.

not seen that done before but they have gone for a touch. The

:02:13.:02:17.

Australian defence is pressing on them, it would have taken something

:02:18.:02:21.

miraculous to get out of the 22. The kick for touch is good and will

:02:22.:02:23.

allow fans to set up the defence. France are comfortable on the ball.

:02:24.:03:04.

Rugby sevens is all about attacking. Desertion in the scheme of sevens is

:03:05.:03:10.

everything. With just two my jumpers, Australia stretch it. It is

:03:11.:03:25.

came free as well again. That was a clean break by Barry. Penalty for

:03:26.:03:31.

France. How quickly will they take it? They are pausing to set up the

:03:32.:03:38.

set piece. We did not see any yellow cards or breakdowns.

:03:39.:03:53.

That was a good little pass inside to Barry. Excellent tackling from

:03:54.:04:09.

Australia but Franca got through. The first ever try in men's rugby

:04:10.:04:23.

sevens. Terry Bouhraoua. Brands are very comfortable on the ball. The

:04:24.:04:27.

Australian defence has been very good. That was just quality French

:04:28.:04:36.

play. And hopefully an easy conversion to come for the captain

:04:37.:04:41.

of this French team. In the women's game, there were six it standing

:04:42.:04:45.

teams. In the men's tournament, there are a lot more. Franca right

:04:46.:04:50.

number eight. They are giving Australia a skier. They are

:04:51.:04:58.

well-prepared team. That is the head coach.

:04:59.:05:07.

Here is Terry Bouhraoua again. Franca flooding the midfield area.

:05:08.:05:12.

Excellent cheese but Australia slatted back. Resolute French

:05:13.:05:14.

defence. Australia have a chance through

:05:15.:05:33.

Cameron Clarke. Ed Jenkins is the veteran who fought about retiring

:05:34.:05:36.

but then he was offered a new contract because of the Olympics. He

:05:37.:05:43.

decided to go for it. Ed Jenkins is an experienced captain of Australia.

:05:44.:05:46.

He has been the central point as they have built this team over the

:05:47.:05:51.

last four years. He will be disappointed about taking the ball

:05:52.:05:55.

into contact and spilling it. It was a very good French defence. They are

:05:56.:06:03.

looking in good shape. They will be disappointed with losing that only

:06:04.:06:04.

contact. Jonathan Laugel has an injury and

:06:05.:06:23.

now he is back on his feet. The referee is Michael Adamson of Great

:06:24.:06:30.

Britain. The referee is always keen to keep the game going. This is the

:06:31.:06:37.

first game we have seen with the men and both sides are looking great.

:06:38.:06:58.

Terry Bouhraoua is true for try number two for himself and for his

:06:59.:07:09.

team, France. Vakatawa, what a star. Five caps for France but born in

:07:10.:07:14.

Fiji. He made a try. Fantastic site in full flow. He steps off his right

:07:15.:07:22.

foot. At the clear one and four the start of the French team, the

:07:23.:07:29.

captain. -- a clear one in. Just thinking about the knock-on by the

:07:30.:07:32.

Australian player, yesterday when it mattered, there was yellow cards for

:07:33.:07:36.

a knock-on. It is a factor that if it nothing, but Fran scored. Terry

:07:37.:07:46.

Bouhraoua has scored 14 points. It was a definite knock-on. The referee

:07:47.:07:51.

saw that France were going to score but let it go. It would be harsh to

:07:52.:07:57.

have a yellow card for that. It was a reaction. There were some

:07:58.:08:00.

interesting calls your study in the women's game and it affected some

:08:01.:08:02.

results. -- yesterday. He was offside. The great thing

:08:03.:08:50.

about the service team, Vakatawa, how many times does he have the ball

:08:51.:08:56.

already. He plays on the wing for France but really touches the ball.

:08:57.:09:02.

The game plan is moving around that. When he does get the ball and 15 is,

:09:03.:09:10.

he plays like sevens. Going for gold. Well well. When you think

:09:11.:09:19.

about it, 14 points, they are three scores up. It is a clever call.

:09:20.:09:30.

Terry Bouhraoua. That is brilliant. 17 individual points for the French

:09:31.:09:34.

captain and the lead at half-time by 17-0. Those key decisions are

:09:35.:09:46.

fantastic. Australia now need three scores to get ahead. Franca looked

:09:47.:09:50.

very comfortable, the way they are moving the ball about. This has

:09:51.:09:53.

hardly been an error from this French team. Australia are

:09:54.:09:59.

well-prepared for this tournament but have been blown away by an

:10:00.:10:03.

aggressive French team. You were talking about set pieces, it is not

:10:04.:10:07.

just the scrum and line-out, it is the kick-off and restart. Jonathan

:10:08.:10:14.

Laugel has looked impressive. They have kicked him a of times. Both

:10:15.:10:18.

teams are competing but the kick-offs have been on the money so

:10:19.:10:22.

far. He has been key, Jonathan Laugel. The extra point is really

:10:23.:10:31.

turning the screw at the death in the first half. They lead by 17-0

:10:32.:10:37.

against Australia. In the very first game of his rugby seven 's men's

:10:38.:10:40.

competition at the Olympic Games. Let a speech to -- speak to Gill

:10:41.:10:46.

Douglas at the side of the pitch, an electric start for the French?

:10:47.:10:50.

Absolutely and Australia have a lot of work to do. The great thing about

:10:51.:10:54.

rugby sevens, things can change quickly. One. Bass, interception of

:10:55.:10:59.

knock-on, or as we saw with Great Britain, somebody going to the

:11:00.:11:03.

sin-bin, it can have a profound effect. Australia have got their

:11:04.:11:07.

backs against the wall here. I am sure they will take some heart from

:11:08.:11:11.

the success of the Australian women's team yesterday and will not

:11:12.:11:15.

want to lose this opening match. You have been pitch side of rugby

:11:16.:11:20.

tournament around the world, Six Nations, World Cup, Premiership in

:11:21.:11:24.

the UK, the stands are not as cool as they would like at the Deodoro

:11:25.:11:29.

Stadium. Tell us about the atmosphere for an Olympic rugby

:11:30.:11:33.

sevens at the end? It is fantastic, supporters from all over the world.

:11:34.:11:37.

They have built as the week is gone on. We had 12,000 people here. It is

:11:38.:11:43.

a 14,000 seater stadium. By the end of the week we will have a really

:11:44.:11:47.

big crowds. The atmosphere is fantastic. It is a party here and

:11:48.:11:50.

let us get the second half under way. COMMENTATOR: The second half,

:11:51.:11:58.

seven minutes each way. It is a lung bursting seven minutes. Australia

:11:59.:12:02.

back in possession and gather the restart. Hutchison goes at France.

:12:03.:12:11.

Australia given a penalty and quickly taken by folly.

:12:12.:12:26.

Jesse Parahi scores for Australia. Australia needed that, they have

:12:27.:12:32.

scored within 30 seconds. Very good restart for the Australian team.

:12:33.:12:41.

Just a penalty and the contact area, that is what caused the turnover.

:12:42.:12:50.

Jesse Parahi scoring with power. He is the 27-year-old in the Australian

:12:51.:12:54.

team. For the first time, Franca Haarbocht back. 17-10 -- 17-7.

:12:55.:13:06.

Brilliant work again by Australia at the restart. Ed Jenkins, the

:13:07.:13:15.

veteran. Australia get the ball back.

:13:16.:13:21.

The stand-up was very brave, in the contact area, did well to keep the

:13:22.:13:31.

ball, Australia. Lewis Hall and for Australia. And Australia win the

:13:32.:13:46.

penalty. It is the chance to work the overlap and it is a clean break

:13:47.:13:54.

for Cameron Clarke. He was chased by Terry Bouhraoua. It is Ed Jenkins.

:13:55.:14:02.

Two tries at least. We have only played two minute and Australia are

:14:03.:14:07.

already up to 12 points. Whatever was said at half-time was

:14:08.:14:14.

impressive. The captain of the team is first class for Australia. They

:14:15.:14:18.

have managed to keep the ball and attack the French team. Quite

:14:19.:14:21.

simply, Franca not touched the ball in the second half. Two kick-offs

:14:22.:14:27.

from the halfway line. And Australia have had all the possession.

:14:28.:15:19.

What separates teams at the moment is an unusual penalty. Halfway

:15:20.:15:29.

through the second half. A little half-break by Cameron

:15:30.:15:43.

Clark, the switch of direction. New onto the field, Allan

:15:44.:15:47.

Fa'alava'au. Stannard .

:15:48.:16:04.

Holland slinks it out, Hutchison delivers.

:16:05.:16:12.

It goes loose, and it's a chance for France to break out, deftly on four

:16:13.:16:18.

fronts now. Parez chases. -- for France. They

:16:19.:16:29.

cannot really get their hands on Jesse Parahi.

:16:30.:16:38.

Vaka tower gets back, was he taken on the ground? He was. A Big Bash,

:16:39.:16:45.

Henry Hutchison, just 19 years old, Ricky of the year last year, chasing

:16:46.:16:53.

down back at our -- rookie of the year. Taken, the referee says to

:16:54.:16:59.

play on. Now it is all about support and who is there. Take your time...

:17:00.:17:05.

It does not matter whether it bounces. France are still in

:17:06.:17:09.

possession. Lakafia. Australia with two

:17:10.:17:14.

defenders back. Terry Bouhraoua goes in, to dig it out.

:17:15.:17:23.

And it comes clear. So close, and Australia get the penalty.

:17:24.:17:30.

A big decision, France in discipline at the breakdown. Stannard takes it

:17:31.:17:33.

quickly. Jesse Parahi again.

:17:34.:17:40.

The pass is picked off, Laugel. The referee says to play-off.

:17:41.:17:46.

Suddenly it breaks up all over the place. Gone backwards... People

:17:47.:17:52.

stand around and just watch as Manuel Dallek underscores the try.

:17:53.:18:00.

Exhaustion. Exhaustion all over the field, people standing still, the

:18:01.:18:02.

clearest indication of what this game of rugby sevens can take out of

:18:03.:18:07.

you -- Dall'igna. Everybody tired except for the try scorer,

:18:08.:18:14.

Dall'igna. Everyone, I think that fatigue, you

:18:15.:18:19.

are right, getting into play there. I've never seen Australia look so

:18:20.:18:24.

ragged. Hands-on heads, when Dall'igna scored a try, to put them

:18:25.:18:29.

ten up. Game over, less than half a minute left to go. Terry Bouhraoua

:18:30.:18:36.

adds two points. It's impressive from France, Australia have just

:18:37.:18:44.

turned over the ball. Jesse Parahi throws the ball away, just losing

:18:45.:18:46.

the ball, that was key. We have Australia, France and South

:18:47.:19:01.

Africa in this group, it is a tough one. This is great from France.

:19:02.:19:05.

Changes for Australia, John Porch is on. Time is running out. A young

:19:06.:19:12.

Australia side, they were fancied as one of the outsiders. Terry

:19:13.:19:20.

Bouhraoua has been the inspiration behind France's performance. He

:19:21.:19:26.

starts out and is going to finish at all.

:19:27.:19:28.

WHISTLE Terry Bouhraoua, brilliant.

:19:29.:19:31.

Absolutely brilliant. Poetry in motion watching the French captain

:19:32.:19:36.

run. Just amazing stuff for France, they will be so pumped with this.

:19:37.:19:41.

They have been thoroughly deserving this win over Australia. I cannot

:19:42.:19:48.

see this... It is a turn up but watching it, France have been very

:19:49.:19:51.

impressive indeed. What a finish to the game. The final

:19:52.:19:59.

whistle will go after the conversion attempt by the star performer for

:20:00.:20:06.

France, Terry Bouhraoua. And it is a comprehensive win, Australia 14-31

:20:07.:20:07.

France. That was a significant win for

:20:08.:20:21.

France, the first men's team to win a match here in the Olympic rugby

:20:22.:20:24.

sevens. Next, South Africa, the Commonwealth

:20:25.:20:28.

Games champions, plays Spain. Then we will see Great Britain in action.

:20:29.:20:33.

Great Britain are coming to this one against Kenya, they are the fourth

:20:34.:20:37.

seeds but don't get carried away, they are ranked seventh in the world

:20:38.:20:41.

after the World Series, Kenya are one place above them, not an easy

:20:42.:20:45.

match for them to get started in. 12 in the squad for Simon a more's

:20:46.:20:53.

team. This is the first international

:20:54.:20:55.

tournament they have played together as a squad. It will be fascinating

:20:56.:20:59.

to see how they get on. Indeed, thank you..

:21:00.:21:02.

We will be back to the Deodoro Stadium later this afternoon but, as

:21:03.:21:06.

promised, back to the beach volleyball. We were watching the

:21:07.:21:10.

Brazilian pair against the Canadian pair. It was 1-1, very evenly poised

:21:11.:21:16.

as they were going into the third and deciding set. It is 11-10 in the

:21:17.:21:25.

final set, Canada are serving, here is Peter Blackburn.

:21:26.:21:46.

COMMENTATOR: A big finale to this match... Brilliantly done by the

:21:47.:21:56.

Canadians. That was coming over with some pepper on it. The block from

:21:57.:22:05.

Saxton was timely. Solberg had wound it up, and

:22:06.:22:14.

Saxton comes out with a crucial block at 12-10. Could not do it this

:22:15.:22:21.

time... Solberg with some power. A crucial serve. What about that? He

:22:22.:22:59.

had him bearing down on him, and Saxton has put up his third block,

:23:00.:23:04.

two magnificent blocks within the third and deciding set. What a time

:23:05.:23:14.

to do it! Saxton can single-handedly win this latter part of the third

:23:15.:23:21.

set for them. Here he goes again... Not this time.

:23:22.:23:24.

They are still leading. Solberg 16's attacking shot.

:23:25.:23:37.

Eight volts, three aces, serve... It is another fault. Canada 14-12.

:23:38.:24:03.

Match point, two up their sleeve... Saved, at this stage, by Yvan Drew

:24:04.:24:18.

Junior for an easy put away. -- Evandro Junior. One more match point

:24:19.:24:22.

this time, receiving. Chaim Schalk and Saxton. They keep it alive. And

:24:23.:24:31.

at the pump year, Brazil, Evandro Junior needs to get it in shot and

:24:32.:24:34.

it is brilliantly saved. Kept alive with a spike, and it

:24:35.:24:38.

still alive. Saxton... They keep it alive!

:24:39.:24:51.

Evandro Junior went for too much. He has given the point to Brazil.

:24:52.:25:01.

14-14. You cannot hear yourself think at Copacabana.

:25:02.:25:13.

An extraordinary match point. With the hand of Saxton over the net

:25:14.:25:29.

there. Spotted by the referee, who has had plenty to control here. It

:25:30.:25:38.

is high drama. Both teams having to scramble to keep the point in play.

:25:39.:25:49.

Two match points survived from Brazil, is that a psychological blow

:25:50.:25:52.

to this team as well? They are pretty calm and composed usually,

:25:53.:25:58.

but this is pressure like no other at an Olympic Games. Staring down

:25:59.:26:05.

the barrel of victory. That was enough for the Brazilian

:26:06.:26:22.

crowd to roar like no other. Saxton with the spike, misses. Or has he?

:26:23.:26:35.

They give the point to Canada. So, another match point, is it third

:26:36.:26:42.

time lucky? It is! It ambles over the net. It ambles over the net. To

:26:43.:26:47.

a forlorn looking Brazilian combination.

:26:48.:26:54.

And they have thought that out, after being one set to zero down,

:26:55.:26:59.

the Canadians pull it out of the fire.

:27:00.:27:04.

RH out you can see disappointment from the home fans, the Canadian

flags flying at the Copacabana beach venue there.

:28:22.:28:28.

now. Cuba are the second all-time gold medallists, when it comes to

:28:29.:28:32.

boxing, winning 34 gold-medal is in the history of the competition, and

:28:33.:28:38.

one of their superstars is a three-time world champion, Lazaro of

:28:39.:28:41.

RS in the lightweight category, he is a bronze medal list from London

:28:42.:28:46.

2012, and he was hoping to upgrade the bronze but he had to get past

:28:47.:28:53.

his Italian opponent in his bout down at the Riocentro Pavilion six.

:28:54.:28:59.

There was really a masterclass from the champion, the Italian fighter

:29:00.:29:02.

not really having any answers down there. In the end, the Cuban won it

:29:03.:29:09.

by a unanimous victory down there. So, it's another Cuban going through

:29:10.:29:20.

the Olympic boxing contest. Avarez going through to the next round.

:29:21.:29:28.

Definitely one of the favourites to win the gold, Avarez. He is due to

:29:29.:29:33.

meet Joe Cordina of Great Britain in the semifinals here in Rio. Joe

:29:34.:29:39.

Cordina is a European champion himself, he has his own designs

:29:40.:29:43.

about what he could do here. He is definitely one to watch.

:29:44.:29:49.

I was a late starter in boxing anyway, I had just turned 16. That's

:29:50.:29:57.

quite late for a boxer and within two years, I was in the junior

programme, that's quite quick when you think about it. COMMENTATOR: He

:30:45.:30:51.

in there. It feels good. Hopefully I can fly the flag.

:30:52.:30:54.

I want to make my family proud. It is the stuff of my dreams. The Welsh

wizard talks a good game, the European champion, but he has to get

:31:00.:31:06.

past his Uzbekistan opponent, if he is to progress in the lightweight

:31:07.:31:11.

competition in Rio. Let's go to the Rio Centro boxing ring, let's join

:31:12.:31:15.

our commentators as Joe Cordina prepares to make his way into the

:31:16.:31:17.

ring. COMMENTATOR: That's how things stand

:31:18.:31:37.

in the top half of the 60 kilograms lightweight straw. We have seen the

:31:38.:31:42.

first two boxers book their places in the quarterfinal stages. Looking

:31:43.:31:46.

pull. ANNOUNCER: the referee from

:31:55.:32:12.

Brazil... Please welcome the boxer in the red

corner, representing Uzbekistan... Tojibaev! Entering the arena, the

:32:47.:32:52.

two time Olympian, Tojibaev of Uzbekistan. He qualified for this,

:32:53.:33:02.

his second Olympic Games, by his ranking in Ayew Bert professional

:33:03.:33:05.

boxing. He is Joe Cordina's opponent.

:33:06.:33:12.

Joe Cordina! Entering the arena for his second appearance at Rio 2016,

:33:13.:33:25.

Great Britain's Joe Cordina, ranked number eight in the world, the

:33:26.:33:30.

reigning European Championship gold medallist. All smiles as he skips to

:33:31.:33:35.

the ring in confident fashion, accompanied by his coaches. It is a

:33:36.:33:41.

big moment for young Joe Cordina. Indeed, he has to concentrate in

:33:42.:33:46.

this contest. He is up against a good boxer from Uzbekistan here. He

:33:47.:33:48.

is an in and out star, according. See confirmation of Tojibaev's

:33:49.:34:09.

victory in the first round. It was a split decision victory for

:34:10.:34:30.

Cordina over Charlie Suarez of the Philippines in his first bout.

:34:31.:34:44.

So, the opening bell sounds in this contest between boxers from Great

:34:45.:34:50.

Britain and Uzbekistan. The man wearing red has come out pretty

:34:51.:34:56.

quickly, he has caught Cordina with a left hook. Tojibaev, the

:34:57.:35:01.

tournament number five seed, the man wearing blue, operating behind and

:35:02.:35:07.

know how old left hand is Cordina, the immensely talented Welshman. The

:35:08.:35:11.

reigning European championship, gold-medallist ranked number eight

:35:12.:35:16.

in the world. This promises to be a contest of high skill between two

:35:17.:35:23.

experienced operators. It is important Cordina moves those feet.

:35:24.:35:29.

Tojibaev already trying to push Cordina back, but he is a very good

:35:30.:35:33.

counterpuncher. He will make his opponent miss. You cannot hold your

:35:34.:35:41.

feet against Hurshid Tojibaev. You've got to move around him and

:35:42.:35:48.

then go again. Good counter right hand by Cordina. We mention the fact

:35:49.:35:53.

this is the second appearance for Tojibaev, as Cordina tries a right

:35:54.:35:58.

uppercut. It was parried effectively by Tojibaev, his first Olympic

:35:59.:36:01.

appearance was in Beijing in 2008, where he finished in 11th position

:36:02.:36:09.

after losing in a second round. Down 54 kilograms. Cordina is keeping

:36:10.:36:16.

that gap between himself and the opponent, then bringing his opponent

:36:17.:36:20.

onto the shot. Got to maintain that gap at all costs. Hit and move,

:36:21.:36:27.

create that moving target, and that gap between himself and Tojibaev,

:36:28.:36:31.

and he will be OK. That is a lot better from Cordina, good boxing.

:36:32.:36:39.

Good counter by Cordina. He gets himself out of that confined

:36:40.:36:44.

position. Nice use of the feet. Very good shot by Tojibaev. He comes up

:36:45.:36:53.

low to high, Tojibaev, and he has called Cordina twice in rapid

:36:54.:36:59.

succession. That'll frustrate Cordina which is where the Uzbeki

:37:00.:37:03.

boxer might launch an attack from too far away so he will walk on two

:37:04.:37:08.

shots. The tactic has to be to frustrate his opponent with the

:37:09.:37:12.

movement, Cordina, and he doesn't want to be holding those feet. That

:37:13.:37:17.

is when you bring Tojibaev into the contest. The left-hand has been an

:37:18.:37:21.

effective shot throughout this round. For Tojibaev. Right uppercut,

:37:22.:37:29.

he's caught by the left-hand, and the hook. Tojibaev having a good

:37:30.:37:35.

second half of this first round. Cordina has been effective on the

:37:36.:37:40.

move but when he holds his feet, he gets caught by some clean punches.

:37:41.:37:46.

So, a good round of boxing from ten two's point of view. Had plenty of

:37:47.:37:50.

success with a long left hook, and began to follow it up with a right

:37:51.:37:54.

hand as well in the closing portion of the round. Tojibaev scored when

:37:55.:38:00.

Cordina held his feet on a couple of occasions but the movement from

:38:01.:38:05.

Cordina was superb. There was parts of the round when he outboxed the

:38:06.:38:10.

Uzbeki boxer, but let's see how the judges see it. Because that is the

:38:11.:38:19.

all-important thing. Remember, it is the ten point system being used by

:38:20.:38:23.

three scoring judges at ringside. The round is spread. -- split. Very

:38:24.:38:34.

close round. I thought it was the other way. I thought 2-1 to Cordina

:38:35.:38:36.

but he has more work to do. To the second round we go. Hurshid

:38:37.:38:51.

Tojibaev took the opening round from judges B and C. The pen and system

:38:52.:39:02.

has replaced the system used in London 2012. The left-hand is a

:39:03.:39:10.

successful shot. It landed with the inside of the glove so it shouldn't

:39:11.:39:17.

count. When you are on the back foot, hitting your opponent with

:39:18.:39:19.

some of these shots and your opponent isn't hitting you, that is

:39:20.:39:25.

good boxing from Cordina, and he should be rewarded for that. Great

:39:26.:39:30.

uppercut but he has to keep moving. Hit, move, frustrate. Boxing on the

:39:31.:39:37.

back foot, and that was a lovely little jab that he caught Tojibaev

:39:38.:39:43.

with. Tojibaev trying to close the distance to land that left-hand. He

:39:44.:39:50.

has penned Cordina on the ropes. Tojibaev is working away to the

:39:51.:39:57.

body. Plenty of patience being displayed by Cordina. Tojibaev

:39:58.:40:04.

adjusted his feet and he caught him with the right hand. This isn't

:40:05.:40:13.

where Tojibaev. -- Cordina wants to be. He's playing into Tojibaev's

:40:14.:40:20.

hands. He just switches off, on and off, Cordina. That's what he's done,

:40:21.:40:25.

allowed his opponent to get on the ropes, into the corner, and those

:40:26.:40:30.

areas are out of bounds for Cordina's side of boxing. He's got

:40:31.:40:35.

two blocks from the centre, plenty of space around him, stay off the

:40:36.:40:40.

ropes and corners. The lead right hand by Cordina, tried the same shot

:40:41.:40:46.

again but Tojibaev was to it. Another very good round. Punches to

:40:47.:40:55.

the body, one below the belt, there will be a warning. So, that is a

:40:56.:41:00.

warning against Hurshid Tojibaev for punching below the belt. What that

:41:01.:41:04.

means is that, irrespective of the score that he has top elated --

:41:05.:41:17.

tabulated, he will lose that round. This is an opportunity for Cordina

:41:18.:41:21.

to finish this round better and to throw more shots. He's making his

:41:22.:41:26.

opponent miss but he has to make him pay, he has to score. He has to

:41:27.:41:31.

throw more shots here. Good work once again from Tojibaev, a cluster

:41:32.:41:36.

of punches, swivelling the head sideways of the man in blue. So,

:41:37.:41:44.

it's going to be interesting to see how this round is scored. Judges B

:41:45.:41:49.

and C scored round number one for Tojibaev. Judge a for Cordina. Let's

:41:50.:41:51.

listen in. While we're seeing some action,

:41:52.:42:06.

let's put into context what's transpired. If Tojibaev wins the

:42:07.:42:13.

round, one point will be removed, so it'll be interesting to see how be

:42:14.:42:17.

scored. This graphic doesn't have the capability to show the one point

:42:18.:42:22.

deduction so it's worth keeping an eye on this graphic to see the

:42:23.:42:29.

numbers that will be revealed. So, 10-9 in favour of Tojibaev across

:42:30.:42:33.

the board in Round 2 but the point has been removed, making it 9-9

:42:34.:42:40.

round. So, he is leading by one point. So, everything to fight for

:42:41.:42:49.

in this third and final round. Cordina, trailing by one four judges

:42:50.:42:57.

B and C. After the conclusion of the second round. The onus is on

:42:58.:43:02.

Cordina. He has to do something differently here, to be perhaps more

:43:03.:43:06.

urgent in his work, his boxing on the back foot, he switched his feet

:43:07.:43:10.

to southpaw. He has to be busy because he's trailing on two out of

:43:11.:43:16.

the three cards of the judges. He has to throw more shots. He has to

:43:17.:43:21.

start push the opponent back, occasionally. He's got lovely

:43:22.:43:25.

defensive skills, but he has to hit the target more often with twos and

:43:26.:43:29.

threes and occasionally just push this fella back a little bit and

:43:30.:43:32.

start saying to him, listen, you're not going to keep coming after me,

:43:33.:43:38.

I'm going to start pushing you back, show the judges you can box on the

:43:39.:43:46.

front foot. Cordina throwing some profitable punches. Good footwork by

:43:47.:43:51.

Cordina. He's beginning to feel the pace a little bit because as well as

:43:52.:43:55.

demonstrating the footwork and the ability to weave away from punches,

:43:56.:43:59.

he has to score with some fans as well. His on the front foot right

:44:00.:44:03.

now but this tempo is suiting Tojibaev with the clock on his

:44:04.:44:11.

right. -- the clock on his side. Cordina has to raise the tempo and

:44:12.:44:15.

watch the referee because he's said a couple of times, watch your

:44:16.:44:21.

holding. It won't take a lot for him to warn Cordina. So, he can't hold

:44:22.:44:26.

with those on the inside. Good left hook from Tojibaev a few moments

:44:27.:44:30.

ago, not a bad salvo from Cordina. As well as the reigning European

:44:31.:44:37.

championship gold, Tojibaev is bustling away with punches to the

:44:38.:44:40.

body. He's hounded on the top by Cordina. Cordina with multiple

:44:41.:44:47.

national titles, two times senior champion of Wales in 2014 and 13.

:44:48.:44:53.

And youth champion in 2008. His every 24 years of age but he has so

:44:54.:44:58.

much experience having been to three world championships already. Here he

:44:59.:45:03.

is in his first Olympic Games, and the clock is in favour of the man in

:45:04.:45:12.

red, he is trailing by one point. That a single shots are coming from

:45:13.:45:17.

Cordina but the volume is coming from Tojibaev. Cordina again, last

:45:18.:45:22.

20 seconds or so, he has to put in a big burst. A big finish can be so

:45:23.:45:26.

crucial in leaving a favourable impression on the mind of the judges

:45:27.:45:30.

in a round that is tight and standing off like this isn't

:45:31.:45:36.

creating that big impression. Tojibaev gets busy. Cordina is in

:45:37.:45:40.

pursuit of his man. He's not letting him go. Cordina raises his left

:45:41.:45:48.

hand, but there is more effusive celebration over in the red corner

:45:49.:45:51.

because, given the state of the contest going into this final round,

:45:52.:45:55.

I suspect it is these fans that are going to be happiest and see them

:45:56.:46:00.

and progress to the quarterfinals. He just got caught up with the

:46:01.:46:04.

contest in terms of getting tired, Cordina. Nice left up there.

:46:05.:46:09.

At the end of the contest, the body language, I think, from the Uzbek

:46:10.:46:19.

shows that he thinks he has got it. It is a close one, too close for

:46:20.:46:22.

comfort. Let us see... Remember, there was one point in it,

:46:23.:46:38.

in favour of this man on the cards of judges B and C, after he was

:46:39.:46:43.

docked a point for low blows in the second round, let's hear the

:46:44.:46:48.

official announcement. ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, the winner by

:46:49.:46:59.

split decision... In the red corner, from Uzbekistan...

:47:00.:47:03.

It is Tojibaev, the tournament number five seed, eliminating Joe

:47:04.:47:06.

Cordina of Great Britain, the eighth ranked boxer in the world.

:47:07.:47:11.

The European Championship gold medallist eliminated by the man who

:47:12.:47:15.

comes to the tournament via their a PB professional ranking. Real

:47:16.:47:23.

disappointment for Joe Cordina, you can see him slumped in the corner,

:47:24.:47:27.

he went be happy at all. He came here to win medals, it's an early

:47:28.:47:32.

exit for Joe Cordina in the men's lightweight boxing.

:47:33.:47:35.

Hopefully we will bring you his reaction here later on the

:47:36.:47:39.

programme. But... Now, on BBC One, you can see

:47:40.:47:47.

some of the eventing. Great Britain going in the very last event of the

:47:48.:47:52.

three-day event, that is the show-jumping.

:47:53.:47:55.

William Fox-Pitt and his horse are there right now.

:47:56.:48:00.

Meanwhile, on BBC Four, I'm going to be bringing you the men's rugby

:48:01.:48:06.

sevens players, Team GB play Kenya. They are in a difficult group with

:48:07.:48:13.

New Zealand, World Series champions, and Japan in their group. Next, we

:48:14.:48:17.

will show you some archery. After the first couple of events, the team

:48:18.:48:22.

events, South Korea lead the medal table for that one, they have won

:48:23.:48:28.

both gold medals available, now it is the women's individual.

:48:29.:48:34.

Some women's interest there, but first, Darren Campbell can tell us

:48:35.:48:37.

all about it. After Lord's cricket ground host of

:48:38.:48:43.

the archery in 2012, Rio had to find a spectacular round, step forward,

:48:44.:48:49.

the Sambodromo. During the Rio Carnival, 90,000 people filled the

:48:50.:48:55.

stands for half a mile. Having just walked into the arena, the first

:48:56.:48:59.

thing that Rudy strikes you is the heat. It is so hot. The target from

:49:00.:49:07.

the shooting line to the target is 70 metres. As you stand here, you

:49:08.:49:12.

can feel the sun on your back. In the arena, the crowd feels so close

:49:13.:49:16.

that you can touch them. That you can hear every single breath, and

:49:17.:49:20.

you can see Christ the Redeemer over there. Is it your time? You have 20

:49:21.:49:28.

seconds to release your bow. Failure to release it will result in a

:49:29.:49:33.

penalty. If you look over there, you can see the sock, it is slightly

:49:34.:49:37.

picking up. You cannot wait for it to be still. A red card is what you

:49:38.:49:41.

will receive. It is not like football committee would be sent off

:49:42.:49:45.

but by receiving a red card, you lose your highest score from the

:49:46.:49:51.

set. It will hit this target within one second at 140 mph.

:49:52.:49:57.

From the shooting line, I could not even see the medal target, but now,

:49:58.:50:03.

I'm this close and it is about the size of a DVD. The best archers will

:50:04.:50:10.

hit this little cross. Ridiculous. Now, it would be wrong to come to

:50:11.:50:14.

such a fantastic venue without giving it a go myself but I need a

:50:15.:50:21.

bit of coaching and help from my main man, Chris, the event organiser

:50:22.:50:26.

and main guide. You were involved in London 2012 and will be involved in

:50:27.:50:31.

Tokyo. Absolutely. What is this place like? Amazing. It has never

:50:32.:50:35.

been used for sport before, it's the first time it's a sporting venue so

:50:36.:50:38.

there have been some challenges there. But there is fantastic

:50:39.:50:43.

history. It is in the culture and fire of Brazilians with the carnival

:50:44.:50:47.

and they are trying to bring it right here and party hard for the

:50:48.:50:52.

Olympics with the archery here. When you draw the Bobak, this arm still,

:50:53.:51:00.

looking straight down... -- the bow back. And looking down the target,

:51:01.:51:04.

that's hard? Yes, it is about hitting when you can, not so

:51:05.:51:08.

dependent on muscles but controlling your breathing and mental ability,

:51:09.:51:12.

and being able to hit the ten when you need to for the gold medal.

:51:13.:51:17.

Breathing, forget about strength or power... Your bow is your friend,

:51:18.:51:22.

don't fight it but use it. Three fingers? Beneath the arrow,

:51:23.:51:25.

straighten your arm and pointed to the target, bring it to your right

:51:26.:51:31.

eye... Aim at the middle and relax. You got a nine. Not bad! Nine! Nine!

:51:32.:51:41.

Whatever Darren Campbell puts his mind to, he succeeds! What about our

:51:42.:51:47.

Rio 2016 great British athletes? Naomi Folkard is involved in the

:51:48.:51:51.

women's individual event. She has qualified for the last 16.

:51:52.:51:56.

Let's head down to the Sambodromo where it is all taking place in the

:51:57.:52:01.

marinara, converted from its usual arrangement of being a venue for the

:52:02.:52:06.

Rio annual carnival. These guys are ready for some archery, I think?

:52:07.:52:14.

What about these guys over here? A bunch of Brazilian fans enjoying the

:52:15.:52:17.

atmosphere. Unfortunately, they aren't going to see the archery, we

:52:18.:52:22.

are going to the Sambodromo to see Naomi Folkard in action, she is

:52:23.:52:32.

taking on the Beijing Olympian, can she progress?

:52:33.:52:33.

Charlie Broome takes us through it. COMMENTATOR: A great start from

:52:34.:52:44.

Kawanaka. Naomi Folkard is pretty consistent

:52:45.:52:58.

in her first-round match. Two lose arrows. Otherwise, it's all gold

:52:59.:53:11.

with 13 other arrows. A long hold from Kawanaka... That is a three, I

:53:12.:53:17.

think. At the bottom right of the screen, two stars. It has been

:53:18.:53:23.

called a two, there's a real opportunity here for Naomi Folkard.

:53:24.:53:27.

She can take this away for Kawanaka... That should be good

:53:28.:53:33.

enough. They need six, Kawanaka can only get to 22. Much better from

:53:34.:53:46.

Kawanaka. She finishes with 21. So, Naomi Folkard requires just four to

:53:47.:53:51.

win the first set. And eight will do it. Taking a 26-21. She will be

:53:52.:54:03.

delighted. Delighted to have won that first set. Not put under

:54:04.:54:11.

pressure by Kawanaka because of that two. Out of character for the

:54:12.:54:17.

Japanese archer. There it is... No such issues for Naomi Folkard.

:54:18.:54:42.

Inside the top ten in the world, she was ninth back in 2009. She was

:54:43.:54:52.

upgraded to three. It is still Folkard's set. 26-22.

:54:53.:55:08.

Kawanaka, the world number 13. Shooting first...

:55:09.:55:25.

It's all about consistency. Folkard continues to be consistent... In the

:55:26.:55:34.

gold. She will give herself a great shot

:55:35.:55:38.

at reaching the third round for the third time at the Olympic Games.

:55:39.:56:02.

Brilliant from Folkard. It really does apply pressure now to Kawanaka.

:56:03.:56:15.

A ten would still leave Folkard with a gold score, to win the set. It has

:56:16.:56:23.

just got a little bigger, the window, it could go to and eight...

:56:24.:56:31.

Pressure off, delivering with a nine and Folkard as she did in the first

:56:32.:56:39.

round match goes into a 4-0 lead, 28-26 is the unofficial second set

:56:40.:56:45.

score. Can she see it through without having to go to a shoot off?

:56:46.:56:54.

Kawanaka is checking the flights on her arrows. Just composing herself.

:56:55.:57:05.

Not as composed as in previous rounds as we saw in the team event,

:57:06.:57:17.

but Folkard is ticking along nicely. With ten in the middle of the set.

:57:18.:57:22.

Helping to apply pressure. So, Kawanaka need something from this

:57:23.:57:25.

said, the second confirmed at 28-26. Not the start that she would have

:57:26.:58:09.

wanted... The perfect start for Folkard, however. A little path of

:58:10.:58:20.

the cheeks. -- puff. She started her third set in the first round with a

:58:21.:58:22.

ten. After 29, there's not going to be

:58:23.:58:32.

that issue here, but with another big score... Putting her in the box

:58:33.:58:42.

seat. Nine, for a lead of three, words from the coach. Kawanaka is

:58:43.:58:50.

under pressure. Folkard talking to herself.

:58:51.:58:54.

A ten, and it needed to be. But eight or better, and Folkard will be

:58:55.:59:03.

through to the third round. It's on its way, and it is a ten. This time,

:59:04.:59:09.

Naomi Folkard does not need five sets and a shoot off to win her

:59:10.:59:13.

match. She needs just the three sets. A huge congratulations to

:59:14.:59:24.

Naomi Folkard of Great Britain, a fantastic performance. Next in

:59:25.:59:28.

action on Thursday afternoon UK time.

:59:29.:59:33.

So, she progresses here in Rio. From the Maracana to the Deodoro

:59:34.:59:40.

Stadium for Great Britain's men's rugby sevens team, in the Olympic

:59:41.:59:44.

Stadium there. Kicking off their campaign against Kenya. Three more

:59:45.:59:48.

days of rugby sevens. Jill Douglas are looking forward to this one once

:59:49.:59:53.

again. COMMENTATOR: The coach has just

:59:54.:59:57.

walked past, looking very relaxed, a huge step onto the Olympic stage for

:59:58.:00:03.

this squad, they only came together in May, made up of a couple of

:00:04.:00:08.

Welshmen, two Scottish, and the rest coming from England. A big

:00:09.:00:13.

challenge, they finished seventh in the World Series rankings, let's see

:00:14.:00:18.

how they get on in their first match against Kenya.

:00:19.:00:20.
