Tom Mitchell is the captain, Phil Burgess in the scrum cap, Daniel

:00:00.:00:11.

Bibby will lead operations from the middle of the field. Mitchell sizes

:00:12.:00:18.

up the little hole they are looking for and James Rodwell goes up for it

:00:19.:00:22.

and get it down to Dan Bailey it does not matter it does not go

:00:23.:00:26.

immediately to Mitchell -- Daniel Bibby.

:00:27.:00:31.

It matters that Tom Mitchell can't find Dan Norton. A wonderful start

:00:32.:00:40.

from Mitchell, a great kick. Rodwell wins the ball, and gives Team GB

:00:41.:00:44.

initial possession, but unfortunately it's a poor pass from

:00:45.:00:49.

Mitchell, giving Argentina the first line-out. These forwards are so

:00:50.:00:57.

impressive in Argentina. Axel Muller Aranda Wynne said. James Davis of

:00:58.:01:04.

Wales wins the first tackle. -- wins it. A slight eye of the ball.

:01:05.:01:18.

All of the noises from the Argentina end. Alex Ruiz of France is the

:01:19.:01:33.

referee. Argentina go down the line, into the 22. Argentina playing

:01:34.:01:44.

downwind. It is raining, it is windy, it is noisy.

:01:45.:01:55.

Rodwell challenges, delays possession, and Team GB have the

:01:56.:02:01.

13th. Excellent work, from Rodwell. It is a free kick, Rodwell going

:02:02.:02:10.

head to head and doing very well to secure possession. James Davis, over

:02:11.:02:18.

the ball, both quarterfinals so far have ended 12-7. This is the sort of

:02:19.:02:26.

set routine for Britain, Mitchell just looks around.

:02:27.:02:34.

Dan Bibby suddenly brings the game alive. Mitchell looks up.

:02:35.:02:43.

It's one for Dan Norton to chase... He closes in. Franco Sabato, that

:02:44.:02:52.

worked well, territory made and the first look at the raw pace of Dan

:02:53.:02:55.

Norton, tactically brilliant from Mitchell. Keeping it in a field,

:02:56.:03:03.

with the Argentinians, everybody having to turn. Team GB win the

:03:04.:03:09.

ball. Most importantly in the Argentina half, tactically got to

:03:10.:03:13.

play key conditions, that was excellent from Mitchell, excellent.

:03:14.:03:24.

Tom Mitchell with the throw. Rodwell calls it, and wins it.

:03:25.:03:32.

Back to Mitchell. Bibby. A knock-on by Mitchell. That was unfortunate.

:03:33.:03:39.

In the previous game, France tactically played the conditions

:03:40.:03:46.

properly -- did not tactically play. Team GB were tactically correct but

:03:47.:03:50.

you cannot force a pass, especially when it is wet, these are two really

:03:51.:03:56.

well matched up forwards, Burgess, Rodwell, Davis, against Luna,

:03:57.:03:58.

Alvarez and Muller. Bautista Ezcurra. This is big, Alex

:03:59.:04:24.

Neil. -- Axel Muller around. Tom Mitchell has to go fast against

:04:25.:04:33.

Muller. The referee right there. Rodwell arrives, plays the

:04:34.:04:37.

scrum-half and that is fantastic defensive work, so close to the

:04:38.:04:42.

line. Davis plays scrum-half, Burgess with a clearing kick.

:04:43.:04:50.

Support from Alvarez. It's a penalty for Argentina. Very

:04:51.:05:04.

slow getting back from that kick, excellent by Burgess, relieving the

:05:05.:05:07.

pressure. It is a different game in the wet, the winter... -- the wind.

:05:08.:05:21.

Organising his players, Bautista Ezcurra has the ball now. Challenged

:05:22.:05:28.

by Fernando Luna, one of the big forwards. Gaston Revol, and it's

:05:29.:05:34.

Alvar rose again, and it goes loose. The ball goes out of play --

:05:35.:05:39.

Alvarez. You can see the first racial and

:05:40.:05:46.

there. Mark Robertson, sorry, Mark Bennett. Just annoyed with himself

:05:47.:05:51.

-- frustration. Then it had a wonderful Olympic

:05:52.:05:57.

Games. Excellent in the Centre for Team GB. He kicks the ball to stay

:05:58.:06:01.

in play, it drifts up to give Argentina the ball again for the

:06:02.:06:05.

line-out. More possession for Argentina. Bautista Ezcurra slips,

:06:06.:06:09.

turns and goes back the other way. Read all, what speed have they got?

:06:10.:06:29.

Norton closes in again. Recycled by Argentina. -- Revol. Burgess has to

:06:30.:06:36.

win the tackle but the ball goes loose. Keeping it tight, Luna for

:06:37.:06:42.

the line, held. James Davis holding with the ball.

:06:43.:06:45.

James Davis does it again with that turnover, the penalty.

:06:46.:06:52.

WHISTLE It's a penalty to Team GB. Just four

:06:53.:06:57.

seconds they looked isolated for their, Phil Burgess puts the ball

:06:58.:07:01.

back on the ground. Everybody, take a breather. Just out

:07:02.:07:05.

of shot, James Ward well is limping off the field.

:07:06.:07:11.

-- James Rodwell. This is Argentine frustration. James Davis, take a

:07:12.:07:16.

bow, what a magnificent turnover. The ball went loose, sometimes that

:07:17.:07:20.

is dangerous but Argentina got the ball, the big forward Luna takes it

:07:21.:07:24.

forward as Rodwell comes off, Sam Cross comes on. But what a turnover

:07:25.:07:32.

for Davis, that was amazing. And absolutely try saving... Good work

:07:33.:07:35.

from the brilliant Welshman, Davies. Sam Cross, Tom Mitchell, booting the

:07:36.:07:42.

ball off the park. It is 0-0 at half-time. Great

:07:43.:07:50.

Britain have the wind behind them in the second half. It's the first time

:07:51.:07:54.

a 0-0 situation after seven minutes, it shows the conditions for two very

:07:55.:08:03.

evenly matched teams, Team GB were on their own goal-line.

:08:04.:08:06.

In the second half, we have some wind behind us, we can play a

:08:07.:08:11.

territory game. This is going to go to the wire, tactically Team GB did

:08:12.:08:18.

well, defended well. Very evenly matched. Goalless at half-time, it's

:08:19.:08:30.

a low scoring affair because of the tension, pressure, tackling and

:08:31.:08:36.

because of the rain. Mitchell has been a real star here today.

:08:37.:08:56.

In this weather, have a think about these off-loads. Goalless, that's an

:08:57.:09:03.

amazing achievement. The attack has been really clean, breakdown, feed

:09:04.:09:08.

them... The half-time talks are animated. Simon Amor mentioning the

:09:09.:09:23.

wind. Use it! Only two minutes at half-time. Here is James Rodwell.

:09:24.:09:27.

That does not look too bad, does it? It may not be the end of his Olympic

:09:28.:09:34.

tournament yet. This is pressure, Eddie, I cannot value how big a deal

:09:35.:09:39.

basis for both sides. Seven minutes away from the semifinal, and the

:09:40.:09:45.

Olympic sevens. -- a medal for the Olympic sevens. They are an evenly

:09:46.:09:49.

matched team, the team who can make the least errors in the seven

:09:50.:09:53.

minutes of rugby. Team GB have an advantage with the wind behind them.

:09:54.:09:58.

It's a very wet evening. Gaston Revol will be looking to put Muller

:09:59.:10:06.

under this cake. Or is it Alvarez? Luna... -- kick.

:10:07.:10:15.

The two Welshman working well together, Sam Cross and James Davis.

:10:16.:10:22.

Mark Bennett comes in, Burgess to Mitchell. Bibby switches. He runs

:10:23.:10:29.

hard, Burgess is back in support. Bibby has to go in and tries to dig

:10:30.:10:34.

it out. It's a penalty against Team GB, a bit slow. Hanging on,

:10:35.:10:42.

Argentina awarded the penalty. Every penalty, every contact is critical.

:10:43.:10:47.

Team GB have to be clinical, absolutely thinking about every

:10:48.:10:51.

ruck. They had to stay onside with the referee, from France, that was

:10:52.:10:57.

great from Bibby. He has had a wonderful tournament

:10:58.:11:04.

too. Yes committee has just given Burgess won, not rolling away quick

:11:05.:11:10.

enough, it is tough and there. But Argentina do the right thing, taking

:11:11.:11:14.

the territory. -- it is tough out there. Revol to throw, out goes

:11:15.:11:18.

Muller. Franco Sabato waits on the near

:11:19.:11:29.

side. Revol under pressure from Davies.

:11:30.:11:36.

James Davis looks to shadow the past. Knock-on from Argentina, a

:11:37.:11:42.

good and offensive operation. Great difference from Team GB. Argentina

:11:43.:11:46.

hit in the short side, you have to keep the ball in hand, no 50-50

:11:47.:11:54.

passes. A great hit, I think it was Davis and Burgess. I had to say, I

:11:55.:12:01.

was really impressed with the British forward, Sam Cross comes on

:12:02.:12:08.

and plays as well as Rodwell and Burgess, really handling the big

:12:09.:12:11.

three Argentina boys very well so far.

:12:12.:12:15.

Tom Mitchell finds Bibby. Pace from Mark Bennett. And a

:12:16.:12:27.

sidestep, Dan Norton comes in, it goes loose. It is a penalty to

:12:28.:12:36.

Britain. A key decision, Muller giving away a penalty. This gives

:12:37.:12:41.

the opportunity for Mitchell to hit the ball long downfield, take the

:12:42.:12:45.

line-out. Or, they may have a set play. Set play is what it's going to

:12:46.:12:57.

be. James Davis, over the ball. Watchhouse I Argentina come up, they

:12:58.:13:00.

are walking up, they won't be pulled up -- James Davies. Team GB will be

:13:01.:13:11.

waiting for Argentina. This is amazing, Tom Mitchell... To

:13:12.:13:19.

Bibby. Now there's a possibility... Burgess

:13:20.:13:23.

knows, there is Davis outside of him. James Davies cannot quite keep

:13:24.:13:31.

his balance, keeping the ball in play. Forward and Phil Burgess

:13:32.:13:39.

arrives. Went forward so close. The big man. Davies here, wonderful

:13:40.:13:45.

friend, she just thought he would make it, he loses his balance...

:13:46.:13:52.

-- he just thought. Giving the Argentinian player time to get back.

:13:53.:13:56.

Alvarez takes him down, but a wonderful run from him. A little

:13:57.:14:02.

finger to put back in place. Most importantly... Just 15 metres out

:14:03.:14:09.

from the Argentina line. They have to get the length back. Three

:14:10.:14:13.

minutes to go. Davis does so well, great camera work. The set play

:14:14.:14:22.

worked well, got in behind Argentina and most importantly... We are in

:14:23.:14:29.

their half of the field. What pressure can be exerted here? Quite

:14:30.:14:41.

a lot... Good pressure, and it goes forward.

:14:42.:14:44.

These little moments, these tiny margins, and it was all about the

:14:45.:14:49.

fundamentals. Nothing more complicated than just push

:14:50.:14:55.

everybody. These are big moments, these are huge, that was a huge

:14:56.:15:01.

turnover for the team. Tom Mitchell forces the knock-on at the end,

:15:02.:15:05.

people like Phil Burgess getting the congratulations, the donkey work.

:15:06.:15:12.

Safely in possession, Bibby on his own committee get it back. Mitchell

:15:13.:15:20.

is with him and now Matt Bennett, Dan Norton outside him, Dan Norton

:15:21.:15:25.

for the corner to cut inside one, head high tackle, can he reach? Not

:15:26.:15:27.

quite. Penalty given very early. I have to say, he stopped Norton in

:15:28.:15:42.

his tracks, that was a yellow card to me. They have been penalising

:15:43.:15:54.

those. They don't want to be so close to the line because Argentina

:15:55.:15:59.

have to be ten metres away. The penalty only five metres out. Daniel

:16:00.:16:06.

Bibby. Slow, slow, quick. It has not worked. Was there an obstruction on

:16:07.:16:13.

Bibby? They are going to have a look at it. It was a big call and that is

:16:14.:16:20.

a high tackle. They gave the penalty for that one. It was a yellow card

:16:21.:16:32.

as well. Steady, Clive. They are just checking the tap down. Downward

:16:33.:16:40.

pressure and it is a 22 drop out. If I was Argentina I would be kicking

:16:41.:16:44.

this as far as I downfield. They have to get out of their 22. Team GB

:16:45.:16:51.

have two sweepers back. They are waiting the kick. Juan Imhoff is on

:16:52.:16:55.

to the wing. It has gone long. Tom Mitchell and

:16:56.:17:11.

Mark Bennett are back. I'm surprised they didn't drop a bit further, it

:17:12.:17:16.

was obviously going to go long and they have allowed Argentina

:17:17.:17:19.

territory. Bennett has spilt it and Argentina have knocked it on. It

:17:20.:17:26.

will be scrum down Argentina. That is a penalty. And that could be

:17:27.:17:35.

yellow. Phil Burgess the victim. That is a definite yellow card.

:17:36.:17:39.

Judging by what has happened so far in this tournament. We should be

:17:40.:17:42.

able to hear this. Juan Imhoff the culprit. It is a big

:17:43.:18:06.

call in the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games. It looks like a

:18:07.:18:09.

yellow. Juan Imhoff into the bin for two

:18:10.:18:23.

minutes and he will not be back and Great Britain will play against six

:18:24.:18:27.

for what is left of this game. Just 40 seconds on the clock, a long way

:18:28.:18:32.

to go, they are wind assisted but it is a long way from here down the

:18:33.:18:39.

other end. 0-0 the score, who would have thought it? Tom Mitchell. 14

:18:40.:18:50.

Dan Norton to chase, chase, long, long, long. Sam Cross in pursuit.

:18:51.:19:00.

Here comes Norton on Revol. Great tackle, cross arrives, they are

:19:01.:19:02.

trying to hold the Argentine player up. High tackle. Argentina take it

:19:03.:19:11.

quickly but they are down to six. This is their kick and chase. Mark

:19:12.:19:19.

Bennett, it's not it Tom Mitchell. He need support and he throws it

:19:20.:19:24.

back with and this is Mark Bennett. Daniel Bibby is within it has gone

:19:25.:19:28.

loose. Burgess has to get it and he does. He takes the tackle and sets

:19:29.:19:34.

up the ball. Penalty to Great Britain. Argentine discipline just

:19:35.:19:37.

slipping a little bit. We are back in the Great Britain 22

:19:38.:19:47.

and just looking at that scoreboard, 0-0. Norton. Bibby on the burst and

:19:48.:19:55.

it has gone forward will stop high tackle by James Davis, penalty. They

:19:56.:19:59.

could just kick for goal here. We are going to have another

:20:00.:20:10.

consultation. There is no doubt that if Argentina

:20:11.:20:25.

get this penalty they will kick at goal. This is a huge call. James

:20:26.:20:29.

Davis is going into the bin. And penalty awarded. Argentina are

:20:30.:20:49.

going to do what? Guest on Revol -- Gaston Revol, and they are going to

:20:50.:20:53.

kick for goal. It is to be a drop kick, no kicks off the floor in

:20:54.:20:58.

seven aside so this is it, to put his team in the semifinal.

:20:59.:21:06.

It has missed. Time is up. 0-0 and we now go into sudden death. And

:21:07.:21:23.

that means that the teams play in five-minute intervals and the first

:21:24.:21:28.

team to score goes through. It has stopped raining.

:21:29.:21:35.

Real tension here and I have to say that Team GB played at half

:21:36.:21:43.

tactically very well. The key man here has been the referee. To be

:21:44.:21:48.

fair, yet not bottled it. I think both players deserved to go in the

:21:49.:21:52.

bin and he got those decisions right. Argentina had a drop goal to

:21:53.:21:58.

put them into the semifinal. It will be six against six. Juan Imhoff will

:21:59.:22:03.

not reappear I said earlier but he might now. Five minutes each way,

:22:04.:22:10.

they could be back to seven before the game is over. And whoever kicks

:22:11.:22:19.

off, that is crucial. 0-0 in the quarterfinals of the Olympic sevens.

:22:20.:22:26.

I thought it was a well matched game, Argentina have been excellent

:22:27.:22:31.

and Team GB really excellent and it is tactically who can keep the ball

:22:32.:22:36.

and sync correctly under pressure. This is where you need real

:22:37.:22:40.

leadership and I am hoping Mitchell has got the edge in that area. The

:22:41.:22:48.

referee wants Britain to hurry up. Interesting to see what six they

:22:49.:22:52.

start with. Sam Cross was on for James Rodwell through injury. But

:22:53.:22:56.

they kept the same players on. And it looks as if those same

:22:57.:23:11.

players are going to see at least the start of the game. James Rodwell

:23:12.:23:18.

is back on the field. Sam Cross goes off. They have got their starting

:23:19.:23:24.

seven without Davis. What a restart for Mitchell, looking for Rodwell.

:23:25.:23:34.

Rodwell chases. Up goes the new player for Argentina, Juan Pablo

:23:35.:23:38.

Estelles. Argentina in possession. Yes Maroney, they kick downfield. --

:23:39.:23:46.

Matias Moroni. Tactically absolutely right, put the chase on, pin Team GB

:23:47.:23:54.

back in their own half. Mitchell to Bibby. It has gone loose again. Mark

:23:55.:24:05.

Bennett sorts out and beat one, beat two. Dan Norton. There is a chase on

:24:06.:24:16.

and it is Tom Mitchell flying back. Estelles for Argentina, Mitchell let

:24:17.:24:21.

him get up and now puts him down. What is that for? A high tackle?

:24:22.:24:28.

In what is back on the field. Great kick from Norton, tactically spot

:24:29.:24:36.

on, they have just got to think at the contact and understand what the

:24:37.:24:40.

referee is doing. That is a needless penalty. Argentina clear from their

:24:41.:24:48.

22. GB question if that was taken back in. These are big decisions

:24:49.:24:58.

from the officials. Again, Argentina taking the ball out when it should

:24:59.:25:02.

have stayed in. Marcus Watson coming on for Bennett. He can add some gas

:25:03.:25:11.

to the team. That is Alex Muller in the line-out. The referee wants

:25:12.:25:19.

Britain to hurry up. Phil Burgess and James Rodwell in the line-out.

:25:20.:25:25.

James Davis is back on the field, that is why Britain were delaying,

:25:26.:25:29.

they wanted their full quota back and it is seven against seven again.

:25:30.:25:36.

Mitchell needs to keep everybody calm. Just win the ball. What will

:25:37.:25:43.

throws in the Mitchell takes it down. Bibby. Marcus Watson. Watson

:25:44.:25:54.

presents for Bibby, penalty advantage to Bibby, Mitchell dances

:25:55.:25:57.

inside one tackle. He finds Rodwell on the outside and he heads for a

:25:58.:26:02.

little bit of security. Another penalty. Mitchell, Burgess, Watson,

:26:03.:26:15.

Norton outside him, Watson. He can get to ground. Penalty to Britain.

:26:16.:26:24.

What do they do? Golden point, first to score wins the tie. What do they

:26:25.:26:31.

do? I would say drop the goal. Go for it. Mitchell is a great kick of

:26:32.:26:41.

the ball. He is going for it. Argentina had their chance and this

:26:42.:26:45.

is Mitchell's. Marcus Watson has done well since coming on. To say

:26:46.:26:52.

this is a big kick is the understatement of the last couple of

:26:53.:26:56.

days. What a moment for Mitchell. 0-0. Tom Mitchell to win the game

:26:57.:27:10.

with the first points. It hits the post! It has gone forward off

:27:11.:27:16.

Argentina. Great Britain get the scrum! My goodness, what drama! What

:27:17.:27:23.

drama. You could not make this up. The good news is that Team GB get

:27:24.:27:29.

the feed and possession, only 20 yards out. He hits the post to put

:27:30.:27:33.

his team into the Olympic semifinals. I think Team GB have got

:27:34.:27:41.

their guns and seven on the field now. Come on, guys, let's put this

:27:42.:27:48.

away. Mitchell feeds, he finds Bibby with a bit of a bounce. Bibby on the

:27:49.:27:55.

outside, not outside him! And the try! That puts Great Britain into

:27:56.:28:05.

the semifinals! The referee blows for full-time and GB are into the

:28:06.:28:13.

last four. The first try, the sudden death points, the golden goal. Great

:28:14.:28:23.

Britain 5-0 Argentina. Wow, wow, wow. Look at the emotion on those

:28:24.:28:28.

faces. Bibby has been outstanding and you just felt that if he could

:28:29.:28:34.

get the outside and what a try for Team GB. Into the semifinals. You

:28:35.:28:40.

feel for Argentina, what a game, it had its mirror moments, Argentina

:28:41.:28:47.

had a drop goal, Tom Mitchell did and they both missed, just. It was

:28:48.:28:52.

settled by one try, scored by Dan Bibby. And hats off to Simon Amor,

:28:53.:29:01.

the coach. He did not panic and he kept his gun team on the field and

:29:02.:29:04.

did not make a raft of substitutions. There he is, Simon

:29:05.:29:11.

Amor. And on that feed for the scrum he had his best site on, Mitchell

:29:12.:29:16.

and Bibby, all of the stars and what a try. He takes the outside. These

:29:17.:29:21.

are great pictures and you have to feel so sorry for Argentina. Well,

:29:22.:29:27.

not that sorry! They put up a magnificent effort and what a great

:29:28.:29:32.

game of seven aside rugby. I will never forget that. You could not

:29:33.:29:36.

think that 0-0 could be that exciting in a game of rugby. It was

:29:37.:29:45.

an amazing 0-0 drawer. Mitchell hit the post but they got the feed.

:29:46.:29:52.

John, what is it like down there? Dan Bibby, what is it like in your

:29:53.:29:57.

head at the moment? What a game, fair play to Argentina, that was one

:29:58.:30:01.

of the toughest act as I've ever been in. So close, one try in it. --

:30:02.:30:10.

toughest matches. If people don't know about sevens, I'm sure they

:30:11.:30:15.

will now. You were the hero, when it came to that scrum, did you have in

:30:16.:30:19.

your head what you would do when it came to you? I had an idea but I was

:30:20.:30:24.

all for the entire game so hopefully I made up for it! But the same thing

:30:25.:30:30.

as in the last match, to stay composed, and we knew we were going

:30:31.:30:34.

into extra time a man down and we had to play the clock. We have been

:30:35.:30:39.

in these scenarios before. We got our man back on the field and I was

:30:40.:30:42.

just in the right place at the right time. What were you thinking when

:30:43.:30:47.

Tom hit the post? Thank Christ it's not me! It was a hell of a kick,

:30:48.:30:54.

just unlucky. Congratulations, an extraordinary spectacle. Dan Bibby,

:30:55.:31:00.

Great Britain's hero of the hour and they will play either Australia or

:31:01.:31:04.

South Africa in the semifinals and the one thing I would say, the IOC

:31:05.:31:08.

meet next May to decide if rugby sevens should continue as an Olympic

:31:09.:31:15.

sport past Tokyo in 2020 and I think that match might have signed and

:31:16.:31:16.

sealed and delivered that. people like Phil Burgess getting the

:31:17.:31:19.

congratulations, the donkey work. That was absolutely incredible, both

:31:20.:31:28.

semifinals tomorrow, Fiji against Japan, Team GB taking on South

:31:29.:31:31.

Africa or Australia. We will be back for that fourth

:31:32.:31:35.

quarterfinal, the final quarterfinal, in about ten minutes

:31:36.:31:40.

time. So many people getting in touch, having watched rugby sevens,

:31:41.:31:43.

some for the first time, saying they'd never watched rugby before in

:31:44.:31:48.

their lives until now, Mr T says that, I have no idea what golden

:31:49.:31:52.

point or sudden death means, but I love it.

:31:53.:31:55.

So many people enjoying it, some criticising the officials but the

:31:56.:31:58.

long or short of it, is normally it's a high-scoring game, but it's

:31:59.:32:05.

one of those situations where Team GB squeezed through, 0-0 against

:32:06.:32:09.

Argentina. We have some Argentinians by the

:32:10.:32:13.

side of our Copacabana studio here, can we have a chat with them? Not to

:32:14.:32:19.

gloat, coming... Have a seat. Good evening. What is your name? Ho say.

:32:20.:32:27.

You were trying to see through our screen, they were big favourites,

:32:28.:32:32.

but you lost to Team GB -- Jose. We went to see Argentina against the

:32:33.:32:36.

USA, they played really well. We also watched the game against the

:32:37.:32:43.

UK. We thought Argentina was going to win. But... It's a shame for us.

:32:44.:32:51.

But it's OK. You have a good team. That's very nice of you, thank you.

:32:52.:32:55.

Lovely to meet you, and great to speak to you on the BBC. Another

:32:56.:33:01.

good -- not a good hour for Argentina, but an amazing few hours

:33:02.:33:04.

for Team GB. There's bringing up-to-date with the

:33:05.:33:07.

medals we've had in the last few hours or so...

:33:08.:33:08.

These are the headlines. Holding onto something... Joe Clarke

:33:09.:33:18.

gets cold in the men's K-1 kayak, the first Olympics for the man from

:33:19.:33:22.

stroke and he was overjoyed to go home with a top medal. -- Stoic. In

:33:23.:33:31.

the men's synchronised springboard final, it a gold. The first-ever

:33:32.:33:40.

Olympic gold in diving. For Team GB. It's a bronze medal for Sally

:33:41.:33:45.

Conway, in the 70 kilograms judo bronze medal match, finishing ninth

:33:46.:33:48.

four years ago but this time, she wins a bronze medal. Also, bronze

:33:49.:33:56.

for Steven Scott in the men's double trap, he saw fellow Brit Tim Kneale

:33:57.:34:01.

in the bronze medal match, and the 15 GB medal of the day, a bronze

:34:02.:34:06.

medal for Chris Froome in the men's time trial. -- fifth bronze medal

:34:07.:34:14.

for Team GB of the day. Let's go back to the rugby sevens, I

:34:15.:34:20.

hope you're enjoying this at home. People getting involved in a sport

:34:21.:34:26.

they've never watched before at home, this is the fourth

:34:27.:34:29.

quarterfinal, the winner of this takes on Team GB tomorrow in the

:34:30.:34:33.

semifinal. The other is Fiji against Japan.

:34:34.:34:38.

Here at is Eddie and Clive again for South Africa playing Australia.

:34:39.:34:39.

Come on Tait I'm exhausted here! -- COMMENTATOR: I'm exhausted here.

:34:40.:34:51.

This has a context of its own, South Africa play Australia, they've

:34:52.:34:56.

already met today, that was an upset because South Africa cruised

:34:57.:34:59.

through, they looked elegant and fast, and powerful upfront. They

:35:00.:35:05.

came up against Australia who come yesterday, had been thoroughly

:35:06.:35:09.

disjointed. Australia turned them over. So... South Africa still went

:35:10.:35:15.

through as the pool winners, and Australia went through as one of the

:35:16.:35:21.

best placed third teams. But anything can happen... Given the

:35:22.:35:28.

state of everybody here, it probably will. Anyway, off we go... Australia

:35:29.:35:37.

in yellow, gold and green rather. South Africa in the white shirts.

:35:38.:35:44.

Australia come away with it. One of the strange things this morning was

:35:45.:35:50.

South Africa started without their playmaker, Cecil Afrika, they will

:35:51.:35:57.

be pleased to see that he has very much return to the field in the

:35:58.:36:02.

starting line-up now. Australia come away, Con Foley goes with the open

:36:03.:36:07.

ball, having passed it. James Stannard got cut this morning,

:36:08.:36:10.

now he's wearing the white scrum cap.

:36:11.:36:14.

Jesse Parahi. Dylan Sage comes flying in.

:36:15.:36:34.

Kwagga Smith makes the tackle. Cusack goes to ground, South Africa

:36:35.:36:41.

has the first penalty. Spectrum and got the ball off the

:36:42.:36:45.

floor, but it went forward from Kwagga Smith.

:36:46.:36:59.

The referee from Great Britain. The referee explaining that the ball is

:37:00.:37:03.

quite a way way -- Roscko Speckman. Jesse Parahi and Ed Jenkins and Tom

:37:04.:37:13.

Cusack, in the Australian pack. Philip Snyman, Kwagga Smith and Kyle

:37:14.:37:18.

Brown, the captain of South Africa. The South African forward. The feed

:37:19.:37:28.

from Stannard, safely to Foley. Cameron Clark slips out that tackle.

:37:29.:37:43.

South Africa sensed that the ball was out and turned it over, not the

:37:44.:37:49.

best pass for Phillips Nyman, but it is a beautiful pass from him.

:37:50.:37:57.

Perhaps other Africa are making amends for what happened this

:37:58.:38:00.

morning -- Philippus Snyman. They take the lead against Australia. We

:38:01.:38:09.

are just having a look at the incident, this is the inside pass.

:38:10.:38:17.

Ron Kyle Brown. -- from Kyle Brown. Let's look at what happens after he

:38:18.:38:23.

touches down here. He scores... Nothing. That is all right. Just

:38:24.:38:35.

worrying that Roscko Speckman has not got up yet. Cecil Afrika will

:38:36.:38:43.

take the conversion, 5-0. We've already had one more try in this

:38:44.:38:47.

quarterfinal than we had in the Team GB and Argentina match. That

:38:48.:38:51.

quarterfinal was a right little epic. Just a quick headcount on the

:38:52.:39:01.

South African side, Roscko Speckman is back on his feet. They

:39:02.:39:13.

are back to their full contingent. Australia planned to receive the

:39:14.:39:23.

ball, Con Foley about to lift Ed Jenkins into the air. Ed Jenkins is

:39:24.:39:30.

the captain. It's become a feature today, not for the first time, that

:39:31.:39:36.

the pursuing player is in front of the kicker. The restart is so

:39:37.:39:43.

important. The guys chasing the kick getting in front of the line. You

:39:44.:39:48.

can't do that, keep behind the line, it gives free possession, the

:39:49.:39:53.

opposition in this case, the Australians... Stannard takes it

:39:54.:39:59.

through. Picked up by Henry Hutchison. The ploy worked. South

:40:00.:40:09.

Africa get the penalty. Excellent dancing with that dummy

:40:10.:40:20.

kick from Juan de Jongh. Cecil Afrika, drawing in two men.

:40:21.:40:32.

It's not Seabelo Senatla. He is not on yet. I beg your pardon, he is on

:40:33.:40:40.

the field. This is good Australian defence. Juan de Jongh sets up the

:40:41.:40:45.

attacking position. Phillips Nyman sets it up. -- Philip Snyman. And,

:40:46.:40:56.

Seabelo Senatla scores. Two tries for South Africa. A wonderful try

:40:57.:41:04.

from South Africa, why Cecil Afrika did not start in this morning 's

:41:05.:41:07.

game is one of the mysteries of the tournament. South Africa back to

:41:08.:41:12.

their full strength side, showing why they are a second-ranked team.

:41:13.:41:17.

Cecil Afrika is the heartbeat of this team. Seabelo Senatla is the

:41:18.:41:25.

leading try scorer. South Africa looked far more confident all, they

:41:26.:41:31.

have their big three forwards, in Philip Snyman, Smith, they kept them

:41:32.:41:41.

all out of the game. They are in the quarterfinals. Cannot quite cut it

:41:42.:41:47.

round and. 10-0, two tries, just over one minute left of this first

:41:48.:41:55.

half. Conditions have slightly changed since Team GB, the wind has

:41:56.:42:00.

died down and the rain stopped. We are back to normal procedures of

:42:01.:42:10.

tries in rugby. Cecil Afrika sends it high, it is

:42:11.:42:14.

well taken by Ed Jenkins. It's a penalty. Quickly taken. File of our

:42:15.:42:28.

low, keeping it well, -- Allan Fa'alava'au. The pass is not

:42:29.:42:35.

required, from Tom Cusack of Australia. A great response from the

:42:36.:42:48.

Australians. Tom Cusack scoring, you can see here that he starts to

:42:49.:42:56.

move... Real gas from Allan Fa'alava'au. And real power. Africa

:42:57.:43:08.

will be disappointed. Cecil Afrika is not a big man, but he stopped him

:43:09.:43:13.

in his tracks. He has to make two big tackles, you are right. He is

:43:14.:43:19.

not the most robust player. On the South African side. It hits the

:43:20.:43:31.

post. It's ten points to five, Cameron Clark is unable to add two.

:43:32.:43:41.

That's the great thing about rugby sevens, you have Smith here,

:43:42.:43:44.

potentially lifting Cecil Afrika for the restart. All of the players had

:43:45.:43:50.

to play all the skills in this game. Ed Jenkins in pursuit. Cecil

:43:51.:43:57.

Afrika... One thing he can do is be lifted. As a lightweight. Half-time,

:43:58.:44:10.

South Africa 10-5 Australia. Really top-quality rugby sevens,

:44:11.:44:13.

South Africa were right to keep the ball off there, deep in their own

:44:14.:44:17.

half. In the second half they have a slight wind advantage and will try

:44:18.:44:20.

to play a far more territory game. An excellent match from both sides

:44:21.:44:27.

here. I marvel at Cecil Afrika, he is a wonderful player. When he

:44:28.:44:34.

plays, the three big South African forwards alongside him, anything is

:44:35.:44:35.

possible. Deep within the huddles, the

:44:36.:44:51.

instructions coming out. Normal business was resumed, don't forget

:44:52.:44:54.

that Australia upset South Africa this morning. South Africa with

:44:55.:45:01.

Cecil Afrika in charge and with Seabelo Senatla back on the wing,

:45:02.:45:06.

seem to be cruising. That was their second try. But Australia, they gave

:45:07.:45:17.

them a bit of the power treatment. Nobody pushes these big South

:45:18.:45:22.

African defenders around easily. But when you see tackles being missed...

:45:23.:45:33.

Neil Powell, the very experienced South African coach, keeping things

:45:34.:45:38.

very calm. They are in control of this game. It is psychology,

:45:39.:45:44.

instinct, as we said, Australia beat South Africa comfortably earlier and

:45:45.:45:48.

here we are a few hours later in the quarterfinals. South Africa with a

:45:49.:45:57.

very different starting seven. And playing pretty well, they will be

:45:58.:46:00.

disappointed to have given that try away. And we have a top seven

:46:01.:46:05.

minutes of Olympic seven aside rugby coming up.

:46:06.:46:10.

Cameron Clark prepares to kick. Philip Snyman prepares to throw Kyle

:46:11.:46:26.

Brown into the air but he is not required. Snyman goes back. He picks

:46:27.:46:34.

up in his own 22. And the winner of this game plays Team GB tomorrow in

:46:35.:46:41.

the semifinal. Let's hope it goes to about eight stages of stoppage time!

:46:42.:46:47.

Brilliant ripping from Con Foley and it comes out to Henry Hutchison. A

:46:48.:46:53.

real chance for Australia now and they have numbers if Fa'alava'au can

:46:54.:47:03.

see them. Jenkins, perhaps not the fastest. Edward Jenkins, the captain

:47:04.:47:13.

of this Australian team. Very experienced but he will be annoyed

:47:14.:47:19.

at himself. Great rip from Foley to give Australia possession. He will

:47:20.:47:26.

be disappointed with that, it was a great hit by Smith, the big South

:47:27.:47:29.

African forward. You cannot lose possession. But South Africa have a

:47:30.:47:36.

long way to go and they have some real speedsters if they decide to

:47:37.:47:41.

kick the ball long. Here comes the boot. Australia have it covered,

:47:42.:47:50.

Allan Fa'alava'au way back. Henry Hutchison racing to get back with

:47:51.:47:55.

him. Fa'alava'au looks up and sizes of the opposition and goes for the

:47:56.:48:03.

indelicate sidestep. Wacom Australia through Hutchison. Pat McCutcheon

:48:04.:48:12.

helping at the ruck situation. He had to go in again. But it is a

:48:13.:48:16.

knock-on and South Africa will have the putting so the kick eventually

:48:17.:48:22.

works, not directly but an indirect benefit. Tactically, Arika was spot

:48:23.:48:28.

on, five yards out from your own line and a massive kick and a great

:48:29.:48:33.

chase and pressure and they get the turnover at the contact area to give

:48:34.:48:37.

themselves the ball. Allan Fa'alava'au at full tilt, this was

:48:38.:48:43.

in the build-up to the try. The big moment here. Arika going to first

:48:44.:48:54.

receiver from the scrum. Arika goes to the short side. De Jongh. With a

:48:55.:49:03.

handoff and what is the decision? I am sure they will have a look at it.

:49:04.:49:06.

The referee calls time off. Check everything I think. And they

:49:07.:49:21.

are right to check, these are big moments. He is not out of play or is

:49:22.:49:34.

his toe on the touchline? Good spot, I think you're right. The touchline

:49:35.:49:41.

is out, if any part of your body touches it you are out and I

:49:42.:49:49.

think... And does he lose the ball, is it knocked out of his hands?

:49:50.:49:58.

There is no downward pressure. It was quite an easy decision. It is a

:49:59.:50:10.

simple knock-on. The petition referee, just staying calm, a lot of

:50:11.:50:15.

pressure in this, just one score in it but South Africa have Australia

:50:16.:50:22.

right where they want them. Jesse Parahi is on for Australia.

:50:23.:50:32.

Big drive from South Africa. And Tom Kingston, who is fresh on, is

:50:33.:50:45.

disgusted with that kick. Kingston wearing 13. His first game in the

:50:46.:50:55.

Olympics. Just hoof it downfield and put the chase on them just like

:50:56.:51:00.

Arika did a few minutes ago. Such an easy tactic and so obvious.

:51:01.:51:06.

Beautifully taken by Kwagga Smith. Kyle Brown judging for the line. A

:51:07.:51:20.

loud blast and try awarded! Brown, the captain of this team. And it all

:51:21.:51:26.

came from the line-out, a great take by Smith. Again, Australia,

:51:27.:51:33.

especially Tom Kingston, will be kicking himself also to give South

:51:34.:51:38.

Africa possession in that part of the field. It had to go long. It

:51:39.:51:45.

puts South Africa two scores ahead with less than three minutes to go.

:51:46.:51:54.

The kick from Cecil Afrika is good. 17-5. It looks very much as if Great

:51:55.:52:03.

Britain will be facing South Africa in tomorrow's semi-. Still three

:52:04.:52:09.

minutes to go, a lot can happen in a quick amount of time if Australia

:52:10.:52:13.

can get this restart and score quickly. They still have a chance.

:52:14.:52:18.

This is where the restart are so important. Hi it goes. Snyman goes

:52:19.:52:31.

up. He knocks on. Australia with Tom Kingston. And it goes in his favour.

:52:32.:52:43.

Parahi, Kingston outside him. Here he is. A big handoff from the number

:52:44.:52:53.

13 but he is picked up. Parahi safely to Fa'alava'au. Jenkins.

:52:54.:53:05.

Crunching tackle on Foley. 'S name in hot pursuit. Brilliant by Parahi

:53:06.:53:09.

to get back. -- 's -- Philip Snyman in hot pursuit. Was

:53:10.:53:22.

there downward pressure or is that a try? Let's have another look at

:53:23.:53:28.

this. Nothing over the line. It is going

:53:29.:53:45.

to be a try, as long as Senatla gets pressure on this now. Which he does.

:53:46.:53:54.

I think he has scored. There is no downward pressure and it is not even

:53:55.:53:59.

on the line. The sheer force of the South African defence has caused

:54:00.:54:09.

this situation. That is a try. It looks like it is going to be

:54:10.:54:14.

awarded. As long as it did not come off a South African hand and it

:54:15.:54:18.

didn't and that is a try for South Africa. South Africa are into the

:54:19.:54:25.

semifinals of the Olympic Games. They will bring on all of their

:54:26.:54:30.

substitutes now. The coach, Neil Powell, knows they can give

:54:31.:54:37.

everybody a run. A fascinating game. This morning Australia were

:54:38.:54:41.

comfortable winners against South Africa. In the big game, they

:54:42.:54:47.

started with the right team, the men on the field. Off the post and out.

:54:48.:54:57.

22-5. Just over a minute to go. I would love to ask Neil Powell why he

:54:58.:55:05.

didn't start this team this morning. Perhaps the points difference was so

:55:06.:55:08.

good in their favour that he knew they could afford a hiccup. I can

:55:09.:55:13.

only assume he knew they were going to make the quarterfinals and he

:55:14.:55:16.

wanted to keep his players fresh with no injuries and it has worked

:55:17.:55:22.

for him. Tim Agaba wrestles for possession and at least helps get

:55:23.:55:28.

the putting for South Africa. The reason South Africa are ranked

:55:29.:55:41.

number two is because when they bring on their bench, people like

:55:42.:55:45.

Tim Agaba, they are very strong still. Sage as well, the big number

:55:46.:55:56.

one. Just great players. Here is Dylan Sage. Senatla cannot control

:55:57.:56:07.

it. Mouthwatering fixture, Team GB against South Africa in the

:56:08.:56:11.

semifinal of the Olympic Games. The final whistle goes. It is the

:56:12.:56:20.

easiest of the quarterfinals. South Africa have beaten Australia by a

:56:21.:56:27.

margin, by 17 points. 22-5. Compared with what went before, it was really

:56:28.:56:33.

a romp for South Africa but they will be relieved to get past

:56:34.:56:37.

Australia having met them for the second time today. It was probably

:56:38.:56:43.

the most one-sided of the quarterfinals. Australia will be

:56:44.:56:46.

bitterly disappointed because they came here fancied their chances.

:56:47.:56:51.

They prepared very well, that young team but they have not made the

:56:52.:56:55.

semifinals. It means that Great Britain tomorrow in the semifinal

:56:56.:56:57.

will play South Africa. Thank you for your coverage of the

:56:58.:57:08.

quarterfinals, brilliant, compelling viewing, particularly that Team GB

:57:09.:57:12.

Argentina match which, if you missed it earlier, we can bring you

:57:13.:57:16.

up-to-date with the quarterfinal results and run you through what

:57:17.:57:21.

will happen tomorrow. Fiji will take on Japan. Fiji beat New Zealand

:57:22.:57:28.

12-7, Japan beat France by the same scoreline. Team GB played Argentina

:57:29.:57:32.

and it was 0-0 after normal time so it went to sudden death, they hit

:57:33.:57:36.

the post with a drop goal but eventually got the try through

:57:37.:57:40.

Daniel Bibby and they go through to the semifinal to face South Africa.

:57:41.:57:45.

Both of those matches are tomorrow. And the medal matches follow those

:57:46.:57:51.

games. We will have another evening of rugby sevens which I know will go

:57:52.:57:55.

down well with a lot of you who have been watching the coverage including

:57:56.:57:58.

Nick who says he has been trying to go to bed for hours but he cannot

:57:59.:58:03.

stop watching the rugby! And it has been years of hard work but I'm sure

:58:04.:58:07.

everybody who has made it through to those semifinals will say that all

:58:08.:58:10.

that hard stuff has been well worth it.

:58:11.:58:39.

If you have been watching BBC Four for the last few days you will know

:58:40.:58:44.

that we like to update you on the headlines and there is not much

:58:45.:58:47.

going on the beach tonight because it is wet. 19 degrees in Rio which,

:58:48.:58:54.

hold on, we have got a runner! No, she has started walking. There is

:58:55.:59:00.

not much going on because by Rio standards it is like being at about

:59:01.:59:05.

-2 at home. It is 19 here, everybody is a bit miserable apart from us.

:59:06.:59:10.

Normally the beach is packed, we normally have our circuit training

:59:11.:59:15.

going on with Anthony Wall Thomson but he is not here. Maybe everybody

:59:16.:59:21.

is inside watching the Olympics. -- Antony Worrall Thompson. The last

:59:22.:59:25.

few hours have been sensational for GB, we have waited and we have been

:59:26.:59:29.

finishing in fourth place but today on wonderful Wednesday, the medals

:59:30.:59:33.

have started pouring in. We will bring you the headlines because we

:59:34.:59:36.

have had another medal in the last 30 minutes. We will start with the

:59:37.:59:43.

gold medals, first for Joe Clarke in the men's K1 kayak, the man from

:59:44.:59:46.

Stoke in his first Olympic Games and a very happy one for him and his

:59:47.:59:54.

family. What a performance from Jack Laugher and Chris Mears, winning

:59:55.:59:58.

gold in the three metre men's synchronised springboard final, the

:59:59.:00:01.

first ever Olympic gold for Great Britain in diving. And on to the

:00:02.:00:08.

bronze medals and Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms judo. She was nice

:00:09.:00:15.

four years ago but this time she has bronze. -- ninth. The same for Steve

:00:16.:00:22.

Scott in the men's double trap, it was a tight bronze medal match

:00:23.:00:26.

against fellow Brit Tim Kneale but it was Steve Scott who came through

:00:27.:00:28.

on top. .

:00:29.:00:51.

And in the last half an hour or so, this is monumental.

:00:52.:00:54.

Max Whitlock has taken bronze in the all-round final, the overwhelming

:00:55.:01:01.

favourite took gold, but it is the first gymnast on the podium in 108

:01:02.:01:08.

years for the men in the Olympics. So, we've had the madness of the

:01:09.:01:12.

rugby sevens, I know you've been enjoying that. We will bring you the

:01:13.:01:16.

archery in a moment, but let's get the reaction from South Africa, John

:01:17.:01:20.

Inverdale can speak to the last team he made it through to the last four

:01:21.:01:27.

in the rugby. -- who made it four. Congratulations, after before that

:01:28.:01:31.

was a straightforward quarterfinal? Not straightforward, the boys had to

:01:32.:01:37.

work hard, it's a hard-working side and never a pushover when you play

:01:38.:01:40.

against them. We knew in that quarterfinal, and this morning, that

:01:41.:01:44.

we could have lost against them but the other guys will be out the back

:01:45.:01:48.

after that loss today against them. Clive Woodward was commentating for

:01:49.:01:52.

us, he was musing your team selection this morning in the group

:01:53.:01:56.

game, was it a tactic, lining up for the match you just played? It's

:01:57.:02:00.

about giving the guys opportunities and managing gametime, it's a long

:02:01.:02:04.

tournament and a lot of minutes to be played. It felt like we have 12

:02:05.:02:09.

players in the squad, you could select any and it is still a good

:02:10.:02:14.

squad. It didn't work out for us this morning but the guys coming

:02:15.:02:17.

into the system did well to pick up the pieces. For obvious reasons,

:02:18.:02:23.

people have been talking about this tournament is a huge opportunity in

:02:24.:02:25.

the USA and -- Japan in the semifinal. How could

:02:26.:02:38.

this change things? It's very much a country where the World Cup is

:02:39.:02:42.

massive, we do not have the Olympics culture that America or Australia

:02:43.:02:48.

has. I think, if we can be successful, we can still win against

:02:49.:02:53.

South Africa. It is massive for rugby across the world, and rugby

:02:54.:03:00.

sevens is good for all nations, like Japan can be competitive, if you are

:03:01.:03:05.

on the field everybody has the chance to win a title. And it's

:03:06.:03:10.

Great Britain now? Yes, they are a quality side. They are one of the

:03:11.:03:14.

inform sides of the tournament for me. We must make sure that we

:03:15.:03:21.

perform properly. Thank you for talking to us. Thank you. Loads of

:03:22.:03:26.

people talking about how they'd been watching the rugby.

:03:27.:03:35.

Max Whitlock on BBC One, the rugby on BBC Four, it's been iPad,

:03:36.:03:39.

television, and laptop, watching two screens at once. Pulling it all at

:03:40.:03:45.

once. They queue for your suggestions... Things are blowing

:03:46.:03:49.

away here! Thank you for your suggestions for what we should call

:03:50.:03:55.

it today, we said Wonderful Wednesdays, someone else says Caven

:03:56.:04:04.

watery Wednesday, Max says he's been watching everything.

:04:05.:04:16.

Win-credible Wednesday. It should improve tomorrow, when we take on

:04:17.:04:20.

South Africa in the rugby sevens final.

:04:21.:04:23.

We can go back to the Deodoro Stadium in a moment, we can get the

:04:24.:04:27.

reaction from Sir Clive Woodward who was speaking to so John Inverdale.

:04:28.:04:35.

Simile people watching at home -- so many people watching at home, not

:04:36.:04:39.

into their rugby, for the vast majority of viewers, they are

:04:40.:04:44.

delighted that Team GB have made it through to the semifinals.

:04:45.:04:47.

The last two hours have been a staggering advert for seven aside

:04:48.:04:53.

rugby? Yes. I've had great days in rugby but the last couple of hours

:04:54.:04:58.

is up there with the best. All of the quarterfinals had something

:04:59.:05:01.

special, but the British against Argentina was amazing. I knew it

:05:02.:05:06.

would be close, Argentina are a good team but tactically, Team GB got it

:05:07.:05:10.

right. Mitchell was outstanding in leading the team. Hats off to Simon

:05:11.:05:14.

Amor, the coach kept his cool and put the right players on the field.

:05:15.:05:19.

An amazing game. A great addition to the Olympics, but it's interesting

:05:20.:05:24.

in the response that we are getting in the studio from thousands of

:05:25.:05:27.

people who are not rugby fans but have seen this, and they like it,

:05:28.:05:32.

they fancy it, they would like more. That is what rugby sevens can do for

:05:33.:05:36.

rugby as a whole. Yes, fundamentally, it is a more simple

:05:37.:05:40.

game. Seven players on the field, it's great for women's and men's

:05:41.:05:45.

games, men and women can play, it is simple, you can understand it. I've

:05:46.:05:50.

coached at a top-level, sometimes I look in and see decisions and go,

:05:51.:05:54.

what is that for? You can't understand it. It's a wonderful game

:05:55.:05:59.

and, for the Olympics, I think these athletes, men and women can walk

:06:00.:06:02.

around the village and go head to head with any of them. All of the

:06:03.:06:09.

teams, the men and women's, have added to the tournament. It is

:06:10.:06:15.

simple to watch, when you see such powerful athletes, power, speed and

:06:16.:06:20.

skill, a huge amount of skill. It almost encapsulates a view of the

:06:21.:06:25.

Olympic sports. You have speed, contact of tae kwon do players, the

:06:26.:06:29.

skills of handball, basketball, netball,

:06:30.:06:36.

all these players. These are great athletes, it's the first time I've

:06:37.:06:41.

watched every game of rugby sevens, you pick up so much. I'm pleased but

:06:42.:06:46.

people who have not watched rugby for four go that this is a fantastic

:06:47.:06:53.

game. Do you think there are lessons to be learned from this, there are

:06:54.:06:57.

millions watching, are there lessons for rugby in Britain about how the

:06:58.:07:02.

sport should be more embraced by rugby clubs and federations and

:07:03.:07:06.

unions in the UK? Fanelli, after this I think all of the unions will

:07:07.:07:11.

set down and go, what do we do about this? -- absolutely. The moment

:07:12.:07:18.

seven Scott the nods to be an Olympic sport, about seven years

:07:19.:07:21.

ago, I thought it could really take off, not only in the UK but around

:07:22.:07:30.

the world -- sevens rugby got the nod. The Chinese are taking it

:07:31.:07:35.

seriously, the Americans and the Russians. The currency of the

:07:36.:07:41.

Olympics is huge. You do 115 aside rugby in the Olympic Games can be 17

:07:42.:07:46.

aside. I used Tom Mitchell is a real role model. He is one of the best

:07:47.:07:53.

players in the whole world. He does not fit well in the 15 aside game.

:07:54.:07:58.

They are players who can operate at this level and have the

:07:59.:08:05.

target. In the World Cup, and in women's

:08:06.:08:11.

rugby, it is fantastic. I have been through most of the biographies of

:08:12.:08:15.

all of the women on the 12 teams, some come to rugby late, they come

:08:16.:08:22.

from athletics and netball. We have international netball

:08:23.:08:25.

players, who want to come and play rugby because it's in the Olympics.

:08:26.:08:29.

It is an exciting time for the sport, and I'm delighted with the

:08:30.:08:33.

response from all of the viewers, you have new people watching who can

:08:34.:08:38.

understand the rugby. Sometimes it is difficult to explain

:08:39.:08:41.

the rules to them. Thank you. Exciting times for rugby but the key

:08:42.:08:45.

thing is, when you have that opportunity, do not let the door

:08:46.:08:49.

close, seize the moment. As you say, Dan, we've had an

:08:50.:08:53.

extraordinary last couple of hours, let's hope we have more of the same

:08:54.:08:55.

tomorrow. Brilliant watch, there are so many

:08:56.:09:00.

of you enjoying what we've been seeing and many watching rugby for

:09:01.:09:03.

the first time. If you are hooked and want to know

:09:04.:09:08.

what happens, semifinals tomorrow, 6:30pm your time, that's Fiji

:09:09.:09:13.

against Japan, and Team GB against South Africa, that at seven o'clock.

:09:14.:09:20.

Tomorrow for that semifinal match. Then the bronze and gold medal

:09:21.:09:24.

matches will follow those games. We have another night of rugby sevens

:09:25.:09:28.

on the BBC for you. The good thing about BBC Four is we have time and

:09:29.:09:34.

space on occasions to read your texts and tweets. We often ask for

:09:35.:09:38.

them and read them out. Let me read these out. Mick says, do you have a

:09:39.:09:43.

shopping trolley like Clare Balding has on BBC One? No. That's the short

:09:44.:09:49.

answer because we don't have the budget BBC One but we do have this

:09:50.:09:53.

beautiful shrubbery, look how much greenery we have got around us! I'm

:09:54.:09:58.

sure Clare Balding and her pals on BBC One are jealous of the amount of

:09:59.:10:02.

shrubbery we've got. I think we had too much last night, it was blowing

:10:03.:10:06.

in the wind and causing issues, so we have removed some. I'm sure you

:10:07.:10:10.

are happy to hear that. Martin wants to know, tell me the truth, I'm

:10:11.:10:15.

looking at the beach, you are definitely not at Copacabana, you

:10:16.:10:19.

are at Whitley Bay. Martin, that is harsh! That's a dig at our

:10:20.:10:25.

incredible production values. I don't know how to prove it is

:10:26.:10:30.

Copacabana... Can we show this way? It is a dirty shot with lights and

:10:31.:10:34.

bits in... There is a buzz with Copacabana on it! We missed it. But

:10:35.:10:40.

there was a bus with Copacabana Beach on it. I will find official

:10:41.:10:48.

confirmation but we are in Brazil. Kayleigh says, no Anthony Wall

:10:49.:10:52.

Thompson? I'm. We are waiting, normally he's here. If you are

:10:53.:10:56.

watching for the first time, it's not actually him but someone who

:10:57.:11:00.

looks like him. He has been here doing circuit training the last two

:11:01.:11:05.

nights, but it's wet and horrible. We aren't giving up yet, we are here

:11:06.:11:10.

until 2am. If he turns up, we will show him to you! Guaranteed.

:11:11.:11:16.

From the madness of rugby sevens, let's bring you up-to-date with what

:11:17.:11:21.

is happening in the medal table. The good news, from the great British

:11:22.:11:25.

point of view, we are on page one! There it is, right at the bottom but

:11:26.:11:30.

we will take it. Three golds, three silvers and six bronzes.

:11:31.:11:35.

Two golds and for bronzes today. The big boys at the top, the US and

:11:36.:11:41.

China, they finished in first and second four years ago.

:11:42.:11:44.

Can you remember how many medals Team GB one in 2012? Anyone? 65!

:11:45.:11:52.

That's the correct answer. 29 of those were gold. We can see how far

:11:53.:11:57.

we can climb up the medal table over the coming days but the good news is

:11:58.:12:02.

we are on page one. It has been frantic, but we will

:12:03.:12:05.

relax after the rugby sevens. Safe to say we all need a breather, even

:12:06.:12:10.

those of you introduced to rugby for the first time.

:12:11.:12:12.

More sedate but no less important. Our tree is where we will turn our

:12:13.:12:17.

attention. Only one representative for Team GB in individual archery,

:12:18.:12:22.

his name is Patrick Huston, he is from Northern Ireland in the men's

:12:23.:12:27.

archery. And Naomi Folkard takes place in the women's side of things,

:12:28.:12:33.

but Northern Ireland shall our job Patrick Huston, we will watch him in

:12:34.:12:37.

his round of 32 match, if he wins committee gets into the last 16, he

:12:38.:12:43.

is taking on Rick Vander then, no surprises that he is from the

:12:44.:12:49.

Netherlands. Commentator is Charlie Broom. That's at the Sambodromo, ten

:12:50.:12:53.

or 11 miles that way from where we are. It was going on a few hours

:12:54.:13:02.

ago, it's not live, but this is the archery, and we are watching BBC

:13:03.:13:10.

Four. Here we go... COMMENTATOR: The higher ranked of the two archers in

:13:11.:13:15.

this round, shooting first on target number one.

:13:16.:13:33.

That is an eight. That is a great opening arrow. He enjoyed that.

:13:34.:13:52.

Nine, can Patrick Houston back up his opening ten? 20 seconds per

:13:53.:14:03.

arrow. You can see the clock is coming in bottom left of the screen,

:14:04.:14:10.

but it is a nine. Patrick Houston has the chance to win the opening

:14:11.:14:13.

set, the matter what Rick van der Ven scores with his final arrow of

:14:14.:14:24.

the first set. Nine, a total of 26. If Patrick Houston can score eight

:14:25.:14:28.

or more, he takes the opening set, a seven will tie it and it is and

:14:29.:14:34.

eight. The opening ten gives him the cushion which he required at the end

:14:35.:14:39.

of the first set. He is two set points to the good against Rick van

:14:40.:14:49.

der Ven of the Netherlands. If you are wondering how the individual

:14:50.:14:53.

competition works, it is on a set scoring system. Each set, as you've

:14:54.:14:58.

seen, is three arrows. You outscore your opponent with a total of three

:14:59.:15:03.

arrows and you get two set points. If you equalled their total, one set

:15:04.:15:09.

point. It's the first archer to six set points who goes through to the

:15:10.:15:11.

next round. The target is 70 metres away down

:15:12.:15:31.

the range. The ten zone is the size of a DVD or CD. From 70 metres away,

:15:32.:15:43.

it is a very small looking target. Van der Ven is behind on the

:15:44.:15:50.

scoreboard so he will go first. The first term of the match.

:15:51.:16:01.

Up against the clock. It doesn't faze the Dutch archer who finds at

:16:02.:16:28.

ten and Huston is now under some pressure. He is just a little

:16:29.:16:39.

wayward. Eight or better for Van der Ven just as Huston had in the first

:16:40.:16:43.

set will be enough to win the two set points. And just like Huston, he

:16:44.:16:53.

needs the full cushion of the previous two arrows. The wind pretty

:16:54.:17:05.

constant from the right. Nine, so 28-26. Rick van der Ven levelled it

:17:06.:17:10.

up in the second set. Rick van der Ven beat the number one

:17:11.:17:27.

seed in the third round in the London games, 7-1. What a big upset

:17:28.:17:39.

that was. The first Dutch archer to reach the World Championship final

:17:40.:17:48.

in Copenhagen. He has also won and individual event in the World Cup in

:17:49.:17:52.

2014 in Poland. So, Van der Ven will continue to

:17:53.:18:02.

shoot first with the scores level. Nine. If you are wondering what

:18:03.:18:29.

happened if the clock ticks down to zero, the hooter sounds and the

:18:30.:18:34.

archer loses the highest scoring arrow at the end. It costs you at

:18:35.:18:36.

the end in this level. Nine, so 27 the score for Van der

:18:37.:19:28.

Ven. Nine or ten will win the set for Huston. It is nine. Huston takes

:19:29.:19:41.

it 28-27 and he leads by four set points to two and Van der Ven is

:19:42.:19:45.

under pressure and he needs something from this fourth set or he

:19:46.:19:49.

is out. Patrick Huston just having a chat with his coach. We talked about

:19:50.:19:56.

Van der Ven's achievements, Cambuur won two gold medals at the 2030

:19:57.:20:04.

world youth Championships in China -- Huston won. He qualified for

:20:05.:20:11.

these games with his performance at the European archery Championships

:20:12.:20:11.

in Nottingham. Huston has set himself the target of

:20:12.:20:29.

winning the gold medal here in Rio. He has got a very tough first-round

:20:30.:20:36.

match up against Van der Ven. But he does have the advantage. He has put

:20:37.:20:44.

Van der Ven under pressure. We saw him respond well in the second set.

:20:45.:20:56.

Nine, the wind just increasing from the archers' right. As they look

:20:57.:21:04.

down the range. Ten. Van der Ven just getting the

:21:05.:21:22.

line and that is enough to score at ten -- a ten. Eight, just drops low.

:21:23.:21:32.

Nine or more will take the set. Eight would give Huston the chance.

:21:33.:21:49.

But he doesn't, 28, that will be four set points apiece. Houston get

:21:50.:21:58.

the tenth but it is in vain and it is for roll. This one is absolutely

:21:59.:22:03.

nip and tuck -- it is for Van Deventer is in front. Either

:22:04.:22:19.

way, this is a very close match. Between the world number seven and

:22:20.:22:22.

the world number 39. With Van der Ven to shoot first. If

:22:23.:23:01.

we have a tie after this set, we will go to a one arrow shoot off and

:23:02.:23:07.

closest to the centre wins. Let's see what happens with these six

:23:08.:23:11.

arrows. Van der Ven opens with a nine.

:23:12.:23:22.

Ten. A good reply from Van der Ven to keep the pressure on.

:23:23.:23:48.

Nine. 19 points apiece and it comes down to the last arrow of the set.

:23:49.:24:08.

Van der Ven sends down and ate and this is a real opportunity for

:24:09.:24:18.

Patrick Houston. -- eight. He has done it, Patrick Huston. And he

:24:19.:24:26.

takes the scalp of Rick van der Ven, the World Championship silver

:24:27.:24:31.

medallist who was fourth in London. Patrick Huston advances to the

:24:32.:24:39.

second round and he is all smiles on the shooting line. A fantastic

:24:40.:24:45.

performance from him. He takes the fifth set, 28-27, and the match,

:24:46.:24:48.

6-4. A brilliant performance from Patrick

:24:49.:24:58.

Huston and he goes into the last 16 to take on the world number two, Ku

:24:59.:25:01.

Bon-chan. It is often the case that the higher

:25:02.:25:10.

seeded archer decides to go first so it will be Ku who gets this

:25:11.:25:14.

second-round match underway. Houston opens with a ten. Excellent

:25:15.:25:44.

start from Huston, he started his first-round match with a ten. And

:25:45.:25:50.

the key to getting past a Korean archer is to put them under

:25:51.:25:54.

pressure. Put them under pressure and if they give you an opportunity,

:25:55.:25:59.

by that I mean scoring eight or less, then you must take it.

:26:00.:26:08.

20 seconds per arrow. Huston and Ku cannot be split after two arrows of

:26:09.:26:24.

this opening set. And that from Ku almost slap in the middle of the

:26:25.:26:30.

target, a fantastic final arrow. Can Huston reply in kind? No, he can't,

:26:31.:26:41.

it is a way, eight. And so Ku Bon-chan, the number six seed, takes

:26:42.:26:49.

the opener, 29-27, and he goes into a 2-0 lead. Fantastic second arrow

:26:50.:26:59.

from Ku Bon-chan, like in the centre of the target. -- right in the

:27:00.:27:10.

centre. Huston needs to be consistent and consistently good,

:27:11.:27:15.

like that. If he can keep that pressure on Ku, he had a chance. The

:27:16.:27:20.

number one seed went out in the second round by giving up a couple

:27:21.:27:30.

of opportunities. Will Ku be so generous? We will have to wait and

:27:31.:27:34.

see. Huston, behind on the scoreboard, will shoot first.

:27:35.:27:48.

From the look on Ku's face, he thought it might have been away but

:27:49.:28:11.

such are his standards, it was away from the centre slightly. Nine.

:28:12.:28:26.

Ten. This is fantastic shooting from Ku Bon-chan.

:28:27.:28:37.

That is eight, he has got to stay out of the red if he possibly can.

:28:38.:28:51.

Well, a rare miss from Ku but it doesn't matter, it is enough to go

:28:52.:28:59.

into a 4-0 lead and now Patrick Huston needs to find something from

:29:00.:29:06.

this next set. In fact, he needs to find something from the next two

:29:07.:29:14.

sets. Must win one of the next two sets if he wants to go through to

:29:15.:29:20.

the next round. He is looking down at the television screen, there is

:29:21.:29:23.

one just in front of the shooting line and that tells the arches where

:29:24.:29:27.

the arrows have landed in the target. -- archers. Great skill from

:29:28.:29:35.

Ku Bon-chan and Patrick Huston. So, Patrick Huston down by four set

:29:36.:29:48.

points. Now... Ku Bon-chan to the first set,

:29:49.:30:32.

can Patrick Huston back up the ten with another?

:30:33.:30:34.

Just missing, not far away, it goes down as a nine star on the screens

:30:35.:30:39.

here, despite the call from the announcers. That is some shooting

:30:40.:30:53.

under pressure. Huston will get something from this set if it is a

:30:54.:31:04.

ten... 28, possibly 29. Depending on that nine star. So, we have to wait

:31:05.:31:13.

and see... It is a ten, 29, 28, or possibly 29-29. We will have to wait

:31:14.:31:21.

and see the target Judge -- 29-28. I think Patrick Houston knows that the

:31:22.:31:25.

nine star is not going to be upgraded and he's gone to shake

:31:26.:31:31.

hands with Ku Bon-chan. Great Britain's only representative in the

:31:32.:31:38.

men's archery competition is out in the second round, beaten by the

:31:39.:31:46.

world number two, Ku Bon-chan. At the screen, waiting to get

:31:47.:31:52.

confirmation. It is a nine. Sir Patrick Houston is out, beaten 29-28

:31:53.:31:57.

in the third set will stop Ku Bon-chan goes through. Six

:31:58.:32:06.

setpoints- zero. Disappointment for Patrick Houston,

:32:07.:32:12.

but an amazing fight in that round of 32 against Dutchman Rick van der

:32:13.:32:14.

Ven. Thank you to the hundreds of you, it

:32:15.:32:20.

has been hundreds, contacting us on social media asking about archery.

:32:21.:32:24.

When they saw the Dutch coach behind Rick van der Ven, they thought

:32:25.:32:28.

Jurgen Klopp had a second job before the Premier League season started,

:32:29.:32:31.

what do you think? No? We aren't sure. From a distance

:32:32.:32:37.

may be, he has a touch of Jurgen Klopp, we will give you a six out of

:32:38.:32:42.

ten, halfway! Many people not believing we are at Copacabana,

:32:43.:32:46.

because it is cold and wet here. People say it is Whitley Bay, stop

:32:47.:32:54.

this, it is blithe! Do they have coconuts in by the Whitley Bay?

:32:55.:33:03.

Hopefully that is conclusive proof. We have had lied rugby sevens, live

:33:04.:33:09.

gymnastics, now it is the boxing. It hasn't been the best Olympics for

:33:10.:33:14.

Team GB, five of 12 boxers have gone home having lost, we have Joe Ward

:33:15.:33:23.

of Ireland, fighting his Ecuadorian opponent, he won silver at the World

:33:24.:33:27.

Championships last year. Gold at the Europeans. Here he is coming into

:33:28.:33:33.

the ring. Let's get the commentary, it's the men's lightweight round of

:33:34.:33:37.

32, with Richie Woodhall and Rob McIntosh. COMMENTATOR: Plenty of

:33:38.:33:45.

support for Ireland, Joe Ward is just 22 years old, the light

:33:46.:33:49.

heavyweight from West Leeds has acquired an impressive collection of

:33:50.:33:55.

medals in international competitions over the years. The reigning

:33:56.:33:59.

European Championship gold medallist is second in the continental

:34:00.:34:02.

tournament and the World Championship silver as well.

:34:03.:34:55.

BELL We are under way in the 81 kilograms

:34:56.:35:04.

light heavyweight division, this is action from the second preliminary

:35:05.:35:09.

round to determine who goes through to the final eight stage, contested

:35:10.:35:13.

between boxers from Ecuador and Ireland, the man in blue with

:35:14.:35:19.

distinctive yellow boot is Joe support, just 22 years old, ranked

:35:20.:35:23.

number three in the world. Installed as the tournament number

:35:24.:35:28.

four seed, and his opponent in red is the confident Ecuadorian

:35:29.:35:30.

character, Carlos Andres Mina, 24 years old.

:35:31.:35:35.

He is ranked number 27 in the world. You can see in the manner he

:35:36.:35:41.

approached the boxing ring and how he conducted himself in the boxing

:35:42.:35:44.

ring, that he is full of self belief. A very confident young man

:35:45.:35:49.

indeed, Carlos Andres Mina. I don't know who has the bright socks or

:35:50.:35:54.

boots in this, I think that Jo Pettitt him, the best socks in the

:35:55.:35:59.

tournament have to go to this fellow, Mina. -- I think that Joe

:36:00.:36:08.

beats him. Mina had an impressive victory... An impressive counter off

:36:09.:36:14.

the ropes from Ward, an untidy tangle to the floor as he takes him

:36:15.:36:24.

down in a headlock, in an NMA style move. He beat Serge Michel in that

:36:25.:36:35.

last round. Carlos Andres Mina is boxing in a

:36:36.:36:39.

crafty contest, just edging up, because he wants that right hand,

:36:40.:36:40.

you see. You can see if he goes to far-away committee falls short.

:36:41.:36:55.

He has his work cut out. He needs to bring it back onto his

:36:56.:37:00.

left hand, lay back from the waist. This fellow, edging forward, stops

:37:01.:37:06.

that with his right hand. Water targets the body effectively, three

:37:07.:37:09.

times in succession with a whipping left hand above the belt line.

:37:10.:37:14.

Slowing down, the fleetfooted forward movement of Carlos Andres

:37:15.:37:20.

Mina. A strange interlude as Joe Ward tenses back, not sure why.

:37:21.:37:25.

A cracking left hand. Carlos Andres Mina looks keen to hold on but now

:37:26.:37:30.

he works away. An exclusive contest, this one.

:37:31.:37:39.

Carlos Andres Mina on the front that immediately, -- City immediately.

:37:40.:37:46.

The referee allows them to work way but it is physical and rough.

:37:47.:37:52.

Getting caught up little, for as a night

:37:53.:37:56.

-- throws a nice shot down stairs. Here is the right hand, this fellow

:37:57.:38:06.

from Ecuador is dangerous. Listening to what is being said in the

:38:07.:38:14.

respective corners... I think it is a fair round, impressive on that

:38:15.:38:21.

front foot, but at the same time there is an air of caution as he

:38:22.:38:25.

moves forward, keeping Joe Ward on the back foot. He does not want to

:38:26.:38:32.

fall short with his right hand which is why he is edging in. It is split.

:38:33.:38:41.

Ward gets it, 2-1. Judges a and C favour the work of the number four

:38:42.:38:47.

seed, hats a fair reflection of a competitive opening three minutes.

:38:48.:39:02.

Through to the second round, and the atmosphere at Riocentro Pavilion six

:39:03.:39:12.

is electric. Wonderful support from the fans here, in fraud by this 81

:39:13.:39:17.

kilograms light heavyweight contest which burst into life with explosive

:39:18.:39:26.

passages between, a good hand from Carlos Andres Mina.

:39:27.:39:28.

Trying to lead his men with that hand. Carlos Andres Mina targets

:39:29.:39:34.

with a good and straight right. You can see that as he comes forward, he

:39:35.:39:42.

act aggressively, but in those final few inches he hesitates. It will

:39:43.:39:48.

come to a shot, he is just waiting to throw the right hand. He knows

:39:49.:39:53.

that is the shot that he wants to land and will do the most damage

:39:54.:39:58.

against Ward. He targets the body but fell short on that occasion. The

:39:59.:40:04.

boxers are struggling to hear the instructions of the referee, it is

:40:05.:40:09.

quite it in here, that is a point off the card of Joe Ward, excessive

:40:10.:40:16.

holding, a judgment from the referee, Mina walks in.

:40:17.:40:21.

At the conclusion of this round, regardless of how it plays out, if

:40:22.:40:29.

nobody is knocked out, a point will be removed from the school of Joe

:40:30.:40:34.

Ward. Took the opening round for judges A and C, they scored in

:40:35.:40:42.

favour of Mina. A point will be removed from Ward's score tally

:40:43.:40:47.

after being penalised for the infraction of excessive holding. He

:40:48.:40:57.

has to win this round, if he wins this round, the point is deducted

:40:58.:41:01.

and it becomes 9-9, it's imperative he wins.

:41:02.:41:04.

He may decide to go on the front that and pushes man back. Terrific

:41:05.:41:11.

shot succession for Ward, setting him up with a southpaw left.

:41:12.:41:17.

Twice in rapid succession. Good left hand to the body again.

:41:18.:41:26.

Watch, level, he continues to be physical on the inside. These two

:41:27.:41:31.

light heavyweight test the strength of one another. Mina is all brute

:41:32.:41:35.

force and strength, isn't he? With his right hand, his speed cross

:41:36.:41:39.

occasionally, square here. He would not let him off that. That is where

:41:40.:41:46.

Ward has to punch. On the inside again, they both had

:41:47.:41:53.

to do more on the inside. Ten second, the clapper is barely

:41:54.:41:57.

audible here, such as the noise being produced by the fans.

:41:58.:41:59.

BELL There is the bell, let's have a look

:42:00.:42:03.

at how the scores are played out. Let's go to the blue corner and see

:42:04.:42:07.

if we can listen to what is being said.

:42:08.:42:24.

See what's working? Go full body... Wants him to be busier on the inside

:42:25.:42:29.

more than anything, Joe Ward, not working the way he normally does.

:42:30.:42:34.

Penalised for holding, that was a bad shot there. Heads nearly clash.

:42:35.:42:41.

Both boxers missing their target. Trying to catch each other with

:42:42.:42:46.

long-range punches. Let's have a look at the scores, it could be

:42:47.:42:53.

vital... It's a 1-point deficit for judges be

:42:54.:43:01.

and C, faced by Ward. Judge A has it the other way, it looks like Ward

:43:02.:43:06.

won the round but one point taken away makes it a 9-9 round, that's

:43:07.:43:11.

why Ward comes out blazing. The contest is up for grabs as we go

:43:12.:43:15.

into the third and final round. You can see the Irish emphasising and

:43:16.:43:23.

working across his body. That is what Ward is doing. Threes and fours

:43:24.:43:29.

downstairs, not bad for Ward. Mina has to concentrate on his boxing

:43:30.:43:33.

more. He's getting tied up on the inside, work on his distance.

:43:34.:43:37.

He needs to create space, throw that right hand and finish with a left

:43:38.:43:43.

hook. But he falls in on his opponent on occasion.

:43:44.:43:45.

Again making mistakes coming forward but he gets away with it, surprising

:43:46.:43:50.

from Joe Ward. He should be scoring as Mina comes forward there. Ward

:43:51.:43:56.

pushes his man away, but Mina steps right back in, launching that right

:43:57.:44:00.

hand with bad intentions as the action resumes. Once again... Ward

:44:01.:44:07.

seems to invoke the ire of the referee. He's already got a warning

:44:08.:44:11.

in the course of the second round. A double left hand from Mina. Ward

:44:12.:44:17.

tries to time it with the southpaw left but it was partially blocked by

:44:18.:44:21.

the man in red. Looking more tired now, Ward. He's

:44:22.:44:26.

had to wait a long time to box. We spoke about this earlier. We went to

:44:27.:44:32.

the Olympic Village. This does not do you any favours,

:44:33.:44:37.

you have to get going in the tournament. In the first one, you

:44:38.:44:41.

feel the pace a bit and it is affecting Ward in this last round, I

:44:42.:44:47.

think. The referee again talking to Joe Ward, the Irishman has to watch

:44:48.:44:51.

how he conducts himself. A cracking southpaw left as he comes in.

:44:52.:44:56.

Look at how physical it is at close quarters. The referee is talking to

:44:57.:45:02.

Joe Ward again. He is operating on the edge of the rule book, Joe Ward.

:45:03.:45:10.

He is tired, Ward, the way he is holding. The rectory is going to

:45:11.:45:19.

take another point. My goodness. -- the referee. That is calamitous, a

:45:20.:45:26.

cracking right hand from Mina. He beat Joe Ward to the punch again.

:45:27.:45:31.

But for the second round in succession, a point has been removed

:45:32.:45:37.

from a total of Joe Ward for excessive holding. Once in Round 2

:45:38.:45:42.

and once in Round 3 and the man from Ireland appears to be fading badly.

:45:43.:45:47.

He is holding on again despite the repeated warnings. Tried the left to

:45:48.:45:53.

the body again. I'm convinced that the buoy has done Joe Ward no good

:45:54.:46:00.

at all and has lost him this contest -- bye. He has left everything in

:46:01.:46:16.

the ring no doubt but this man was rugged and strong and intense

:46:17.:46:26.

throughout the three rounds. Ward, serious disadvantage to overcome a

:46:27.:46:29.

having point deducted in Round 2 and Round 3. Mina was rough and tough

:46:30.:46:35.

and kept on coming. Not a bad shot from Joe Ward but I think the bye

:46:36.:46:40.

and waiting has cost him. Mina already has one contest. We can

:46:41.:46:48.

listen do has got it, don't think it is Ward.

:46:49.:46:55.

Make no mistake, this will be an upset. And

:46:56.:47:06.

ladies and gentlemen, the winner, by split decision... In the red

:47:07.:47:22.

corner... Carlos Andres Mina! The competent Ecuadorian prevails by a

:47:23.:47:27.

split decision victory over league tournament number four seed, the

:47:28.:47:31.

number three ranked boxer in the world, eliminated. And the man who

:47:32.:47:35.

has two World Championship medals under his belt from the previous two

:47:36.:47:41.

editions, Joe Ward is out on his first Olympic contest after

:47:42.:47:45.

receiving a bye in the first preliminary round. This is how, a

:47:46.:47:49.

split decision victory in favour of Carlos Andres Mina. Joe Ward will

:47:50.:47:55.

take no further part in the Olympic tournament as he is eliminated in

:47:56.:47:57.

the second preliminary round. That was from just a few moments

:47:58.:48:08.

ago. We will try to bring you some more boxing in the next few days

:48:09.:48:13.

because it is one of those sports, everyday we are here, there is live

:48:14.:48:16.

boxing taking place. It has not been a big Olympics so far for GB when it

:48:17.:48:22.

comes to the ring them that if six of the 12 boxers who are now out.

:48:23.:48:25.

Half have gone but we will continue to follow a success or failure of

:48:26.:48:31.

those remaining. One thing we have not shown you and a lot of you have

:48:32.:48:36.

requested this, is some basketball action. This is what is happening at

:48:37.:48:40.

the moment in the Carioca Arena 2 stop it is half-time at the moment

:48:41.:48:46.

between the dream team, USA, and Australia. Australia are actually

:48:47.:48:55.

beating Team USA 54-49. We are going to join this in a few moments taking

:48:56.:49:01.

you through the second half. We will be live a little later but Australia

:49:02.:49:09.

are winning at the moment. We will see if they can come back in about

:49:10.:49:14.

five or ten minutes time. It has been a great day for Team GB with

:49:15.:49:19.

two gold medals and four bronze medals and one of those came for

:49:20.:49:24.

Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms judo and this has been the story of

:49:25.:49:26.

her day. The room 70 kilo judo contest and

:49:27.:49:35.

Sally Conway making her first appearance -- the women's contest.

:49:36.:49:41.

That is it. Not hanging around at all. Awarded the ippon with less

:49:42.:49:53.

than a minute gone. Ippon for Sally Conway! What a reversal and what a

:49:54.:49:55.

move! Ippon awarded for Sally Conway! And

:49:56.:50:11.

Olympic semifinal awaits! A third ippon in a row.

:50:12.:50:19.

That is amazing stuff, it will go into golden score. Sally Conway is

:50:20.:50:27.

almost won this match three times. She has lost it! She has been taken

:50:28.:50:31.

down. Sally Conway gets the medal! A

:50:32.:50:46.

bronze medal and I have to say that she fully deserves it. Absolute

:50:47.:50:49.

brilliance. Lovely to see a smiling Sally

:50:50.:50:59.

Conway, delighted with her bronze medal and I should clear something

:51:00.:51:03.

up, Joe Ward is obviously representing Ireland. There are so

:51:04.:51:10.

many athletes the beating and hopefully you will forgive me that

:51:11.:51:13.

error! We will try to keep you up-to-date -- athletes competing.

:51:14.:51:20.

Apologies to everybody! That bring you the gold medal match from that

:51:21.:51:21.

70 kilo category. Here we go, the final, gold and

:51:22.:51:40.

silver up for grabs. Prepare to make some noise in this house because it

:51:41.:51:47.

is time for the gold medal fight. It is Japan and Columbia deciding the

:51:48.:51:57.

gold and silver here. Yuri Alvear of Colombia, 30 years of age already

:51:58.:52:02.

had a bronze medal from London. She is in her second calibre games.

:52:03.:52:10.

Haruka Tachimoto, so good on away here -- Olympic Games. She had some

:52:11.:52:20.

super quick performances earlier on. She defeated the world number one in

:52:21.:52:24.

her second outing. We thought at that stage that she was headed for a

:52:25.:52:31.

medal and this match. Alvear spent time training in Japan. She has two

:52:32.:52:40.

World Championships next to her name so the credentials of these two are

:52:41.:52:41.

outstanding. Tachimoto only fought twice in 2015,

:52:42.:52:55.

winning both grand slams and already in 2016, a grand slam in Paris. The

:52:56.:53:00.

draw did not do her any favours. She has been pushed to the limit through

:53:01.:53:04.

golden score a couple of times, Tachimoto. Alvear of Columbia might

:53:05.:53:12.

be fresher. But we know that they will fight until the absolute end.

:53:13.:53:14.

-- Columbia. This is going to be two completely

:53:15.:53:29.

different styles, the very stand-up style of Tachimoto, she will be

:53:30.:53:32.

going for the outside leg and you have to watch for the brutality of

:53:33.:53:40.

the Colombian. Straightaway, Tachimoto does not like it. Could

:53:41.:53:45.

you imagine what this would do for Colombia? A gold medal here, it

:53:46.:53:50.

would be the first ever Olympic gold medal in judo for Colombia. Super

:53:51.:53:57.

stuff. She is a great champion. I think she is 32 years of age so

:53:58.:54:02.

probably her last Olympic Games but you never know. 30 years of age,

:54:03.:54:13.

just looking, thank you. 34 probably is a bit too far in Tokyo but you

:54:14.:54:19.

never know with Alvear. We know that Tachimoto will be there in the

:54:20.:54:25.

running for Tokyo, whether she gets selected or not. The selectors do

:54:26.:54:29.

all sorts of different things, as they have done by selecting her here

:54:30.:54:33.

also and she has shown that they have made the right call. A penalty

:54:34.:54:38.

here against Tachimoto but still a long time, just inside three minutes

:54:39.:54:43.

remaining. They are trying to get two hands on around the back. Alvear

:54:44.:54:52.

sort of got ahold. The referee gets involved again and we are back into

:54:53.:54:58.

the middle. The tactic here for Alvear is to pull the head of

:54:59.:55:02.

Tachimoto in and stop her from moving. Tachimoto is best when she

:55:03.:55:08.

is moving. That left hand others will try to keep Alvear out. And

:55:09.:55:15.

there it is, she has scored so many times with that, the snaking

:55:16.:55:20.

technique, going around the outside of the leg. Two minutes 20 remaining

:55:21.:55:30.

of this four-minute contest also the referee does not like that and they

:55:31.:55:36.

moved and go up high. It looked as if Alvear had created some leverage.

:55:37.:55:42.

The coaches with plenty to say in the break. This is where she is

:55:43.:55:48.

best, look at that change of direction and it is going to be a

:55:49.:55:51.

score the wazari. That is all over, I can tell you

:55:52.:56:04.

now. Alvear will not get back up from that. It is going to be a gold

:56:05.:56:12.

medal here. You can see the second going up and the score and it is 20

:56:13.:56:17.

seconds and she has got the ippon! That was absolutely amazing from

:56:18.:56:21.

Tachimoto and what the date she has had. The most amazing run of

:56:22.:56:27.

performances from Tachimoto, all the way through. She defeated the world

:56:28.:56:33.

number one first off and then went all the way through. She beat Laura

:56:34.:56:40.

Vargas Koch in the semifinal and straight through against Alvear and

:56:41.:56:42.

ippon. How good was that? That is the face

:56:43.:56:56.

of an Olympic champion and a very tired face as well. Some of those

:56:57.:57:00.

early round matches went deep into golden score but now she can let it

:57:01.:57:07.

out, the tears from Tachimoto, the Olympic champion. They knew what

:57:08.:57:11.

they were doing, the Japanese selectors. Japan have won almost 30%

:57:12.:57:17.

of all medals ever in Olympic competition. I think she almost

:57:18.:57:21.

thought about jumping into the stands but too much respect for the

:57:22.:57:26.

sport for that. Continuing to bow to everybody including the Japanese

:57:27.:57:30.

commentary team next to us. There are some tears as well because this

:57:31.:57:36.

means a lot. Olympic gold and the disappointment there but with it of

:57:37.:57:41.

course comes Olympic silver for Yuri Alvear. There is the champion.

:57:42.:57:46.

Quite a finish to the women's 70 kilograms judo competition which

:57:47.:57:52.

also provided bronze for Sally Conway, one of four bronze medals if

:57:53.:57:57.

you have just come back in, for bronze medals for Team GB today and

:57:58.:58:02.

two gold medals. We can bring you up-to-date because it has been a

:58:03.:58:03.

wonderful Wednesday. Gold for Joe Clarke in the men's K1,

:58:04.:58:24.

the first Olympics for the man from Stoke and he did the business. Also

:58:25.:58:31.

gold for Jack Laugher and Chris Mears in the three metre men's

:58:32.:58:36.

synchronised springboard final as they made history, best friend and

:58:37.:58:40.

housemates, Commonwealth champions, they won their first medal last in

:58:41.:58:44.

the World Championships and now they are Olympic champions. And those

:58:45.:58:49.

bronze medals, we have shown you Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms

:58:50.:58:54.

judo. She finished ninth four years ago but this time has bronze. Same

:58:55.:59:02.

colour for Steven Scott in the men's double trap, seeing off fellow

:59:03.:59:05.

Briton Tim Kneale in the bronze medal match. He loved it! Chris

:59:06.:59:13.

Froome got the first medal of the day in the time trial. Fabian

:59:14.:59:21.

Cancellara of Switzerland took gold. And the final bronze to bring you up

:59:22.:59:29.

to date, Max Whitlock, the first gymnast from Great Britain on the

:59:30.:59:34.

podium in an Olympics in 108 years for the men, incredible stuff. And a

:59:35.:59:43.

reminder, if you were watching yesterday, we spoke to Mike from the

:59:44.:59:50.

USA. The was saying there was no way that Team USA were going to struggle

:59:51.:59:54.

in a basketball and he is probably right. But at half-time in the

:59:55.:00:01.

Carioca Arena 2 they are 54-49 down against Australia. The coach does

:00:02.:00:05.

not look that happy. Maybe they know they are in a match. Those that you

:00:06.:00:10.

have been asking for basketball, we are now going to deliver the goods

:00:11.:00:15.

for you so let's go over to the Carioca Arena 2 for the superstars,

:00:16.:00:20.

the dream team of the USA taking on Australia, trailing 54-49 at

:00:21.:00:22.

half-time. Joe Ward again. He is operating on

:00:23.:00:27.

the edge of the rule book, Joe Ward. It has been a remarkable first half

:00:28.:00:34.

from Australia, they are leading the United States by five points, they

:00:35.:00:43.

have put the USA under real pressure. Can the US go on with it

:00:44.:00:48.

shall mark will individual talent shines through in the second half?

:00:49.:00:53.

They are being tested for the first time at this Olympic Games in the

:00:54.:00:58.

US, level with Venezuelan at quarter time in the 1st quarter, then they

:00:59.:01:02.

took complete control. Here they are being pushed all the way to

:01:03.:01:06.

half-time. Kevin Durant is yet to get going for the USA. At half-time,

:01:07.:01:14.

Australia have 54, the USA have 49. Men's basketball, the preliminary

:01:15.:01:22.

group A game. They have won their opening two matches, a third win in

:01:23.:01:25.

the quarterfinals is pretty much guaranteed. All set for what is

:01:26.:01:34.

going to be a thrilling 3rd quarter, Australia's defensive pressure has

:01:35.:01:38.

been exemplary. The USA need to step it up, they're shooting has been

:01:39.:01:46.

off, Australia have been fantastic. A big 3rd quarter in store for

:01:47.:01:55.

Australia and the United States. It is the 3rd quarter in the men's

:01:56.:02:01.

basketball, preliminary round between Australia and the USA.

:02:02.:02:09.

DeMarcus Cousins in there to prevent the lay-up from Patty Mills.

:02:10.:02:18.

Australia from the restart... Ron cousins misses it, and eventually

:02:19.:02:24.

gets it in. He just gave up really. Australia's lead is down to three.

:02:25.:02:36.

Dellavedova put it up for Baines, now Australia are missing

:02:37.:02:40.

opportunities. It is the USA, there is little room for error. It has

:02:41.:02:46.

been into an staff, a fast paced game at an extremely high level, --

:02:47.:02:57.

end to end stuff. Australia led by five at half-time. The US are now

:02:58.:03:06.

getting into gear, Kevin Durant 43, knocking it down effortlessly. The

:03:07.:03:13.

USA are level. Is that the moment things really start to turn?

:03:14.:03:17.

Dellavedova putting up a shot after being fouled by elo Anthony. --

:03:18.:03:32.

Carmelo Anthony. Eight points for Kevin Durant,

:03:33.:03:43.

Australia have done so well to keep the US offence quiet. Trying to dish

:03:44.:03:55.

it off for Dellavedova, but leaving it for Cousins. The USA are in

:03:56.:04:01.

front. Taking them less than two minutes of this 3rd quarter to

:04:02.:04:05.

regain the lead. Dellavedova, to Baines. Slowing things right down,

:04:06.:04:15.

Australia, their tactic in the first half. Working to great affect,

:04:16.:04:21.

particularly defensively. Missing shots, that was not happening in the

:04:22.:04:26.

first half, they have not yet scored in this 3rd quarter. The USA on a

:04:27.:04:38.

7-0 run. Irving, with brilliant skills Australia called time down by

:04:39.:04:46.

four, they need to take a breather. Chi reopening has been strong in

:04:47.:04:50.

this 3rd quarter, seven points for him now. -- Kyrie Irving. No way was

:04:51.:04:57.

Dellavedova going to prevent that one from getting in. Much better

:04:58.:05:04.

from the USA point of view, 9-0 to begin the 3rd quarter, they have

:05:05.:05:08.

retaken the lead, and are ahead by four.

:05:09.:05:25.

Keep playing aggressive on the rim. Offensively, get some emotion and

:05:26.:05:36.

move it. Wrap them up! The Australians are fully revved up for

:05:37.:05:42.

this one. They have six of their players playing in the United States

:05:43.:05:51.

for the NBA. Chi reopening is a former team-mate of Matthew

:05:52.:05:55.

Dellavedova. He moved to the Milwaukee Bucks after losing the NBA

:05:56.:06:07.

title. They will be hoping that they can take this one in the second

:06:08.:06:12.

half. A four point lead for the USA, it was a 5-point lead for Australia

:06:13.:06:19.

at half-time. Ingles runs into trouble and gets the pass out to

:06:20.:06:22.

Patty Mills who puts it in brilliantly over the arm of the

:06:23.:06:28.

markers cousins. Patty Mills has had an extremely good game, looking very

:06:29.:06:34.

fired up against the other NBA stars. Dellavedova... Driving the

:06:35.:06:40.

shot away but it was difficult under pressure. A foul called on both

:06:41.:06:51.

good, pleading his innocence, a two-point lead for the US, that was

:06:52.:07:02.

the foul from Bogart on Irving. -- Andrew Bogut. Not happy with the

:07:03.:07:09.

aggressiveness on contact from Dellavedova, the referees know about

:07:10.:07:14.

his displeasure. -- Andrew Bogut. Kevin Durant is yet to get going,

:07:15.:07:23.

they are taking time, they want to slow them down, Australia, keep them

:07:24.:07:27.

outside. Again, it is working on that occasion but the shot clock is

:07:28.:07:32.

running down on Anthony, it was pressure three. Dellavedova picks it

:07:33.:07:35.

up, Patty Mills with a quick passout. Joe Ingles almost putting

:07:36.:07:45.

Australia back in front. Australia regained their defensive pressure

:07:46.:07:49.

which served them so well in the first half, fighting for every ball.

:07:50.:07:58.

Just two points in it here. United States were well clear in their last

:07:59.:08:02.

two games, but here they are being tested. The rebound offensively has

:08:03.:08:09.

been remarkable. That shows how strong the extra alien defence has

:08:10.:08:13.

been. There have been so many shots and follow-up from the US --

:08:14.:08:27.

Australian defence. Andrew Bogut. Joe Ingles plays it

:08:28.:08:38.

off for Andrew Bogut. A patient approach from Australia. Andrew

:08:39.:08:41.

Bogut finishes a wonderful move from Australia. They talked about having

:08:42.:08:45.

movements cutting, that is what Australia did and it opened the gap

:08:46.:08:52.

for Andrew Bogut to finish it off. It is 58-58, Australia level once

:08:53.:08:56.

more. Kevin Durant restores the US lead.

:08:57.:09:02.

Australia had to play the perfect game really if they are to go on and

:09:03.:09:14.

win this. Bairstow leading edge for Ingles -- leaving it for Joe Ingles.

:09:15.:09:19.

That knocks down the long range, too heavy. Australia are keeping up with

:09:20.:09:25.

the USA, they are going toe to toe here. The question is, can they keep

:09:26.:09:33.

it up? Andrew Bogut got in ahead of Cousins, it looks like the foul goes

:09:34.:09:39.

against the USA. Andrew Bogut comes up with a steal, it is a foul on

:09:40.:09:46.

Cousins. Just dragging Andrew Bogut there, that is where contact was

:09:47.:09:53.

made. It is going to be an Australian ball for a personal foul

:09:54.:10:02.

for Cousins. Andrew Bogut to Dellavedova, who

:10:03.:10:10.

lost the ball. It is USA possession, Dellavedova thought it came off an

:10:11.:10:20.

American player last. Play Thompson -- Clay Thompson checking back in

:10:21.:10:26.

for the US, Dellavedova has had a remarkable night with nine assists.

:10:27.:10:37.

Averaging 11.5 assists per game. Just about every minute for

:10:38.:10:42.

Australia as well, he has incredible fitness levels. Thompson with the

:10:43.:10:46.

pressure, that is what he does so well, how many times has he done

:10:47.:10:50.

that for the Golden State Warriors? Taking the pass perfectly, knocking

:10:51.:10:54.

down the treble. Mills emulates Thompson, they do so. The

:10:55.:11:00.

Australians are going blow for blow. Anything you can do, I can do just

:11:01.:11:08.

as well, says Patty Mills. Both teams shooting well from the

:11:09.:11:13.

outside, Anthony runs into trouble with Bairstow. Blocked by Deirdre

:11:14.:11:22.

Jordan. No way that Bairstow was getting that one over him! --

:11:23.:11:33.

DeAndre Jordan. Timing that leap to perfection. Australia still with

:11:34.:11:43.

possession. Dellavedova, it is 63-63. Breaking off for three, that

:11:44.:11:52.

soft target. Thompson to Durand, it is contact, a foul on Andrew Bogut.

:11:53.:12:05.

A bit of toing and froing going on. Kevin Durant, last time he drove,

:12:06.:12:11.

Bairstow took his -- stood his ground but this time, Andrew Bogut

:12:12.:12:18.

moved away, working out if Kevin Durant strew the foul here... --

:12:19.:12:28.

through the foul here. It has been a really intense battle between the

:12:29.:12:35.

two sides. The USA may be slightly off with their shooting, but they

:12:36.:12:38.

have been pressured by fantastic Australian defence. Kevin Durant,

:12:39.:12:44.

hitting it from the foul line, his first attempt up to 11 points. For

:12:45.:12:54.

from 13, not numbers typically associated with Kevin Durant. 100%

:12:55.:13:00.

from the foul line. The USA are leading by two. Andrew Bogut,

:13:01.:13:13.

breaking it off to Mills. Happy to take their time, the Australians.

:13:14.:13:17.

The crew one has a shot from the edge, unsuccessful. The foul is

:13:18.:13:26.

called here -- Andrew Bogut. It is on Cyle Larin. -- it is from Kyle

:13:27.:13:42.

Lowry. Larry on Bairstow, Mills for three, but just off target. Green

:13:43.:13:53.

sees it over the line. They were down by five points at half-time,

:13:54.:14:00.

the USA, now they are trailing in the 3rd quarter. It is a USA ball. A

:14:01.:14:09.

lot of stoppages now for both teams, into that period where things get

:14:10.:14:23.

very intense. Kyle Lowry. Thompson, they shut down that attempt. Lowry,

:14:24.:14:33.

driving straight through, in off the board from Kyle Lowry, the lead is

:14:34.:14:39.

up to four for the USA. Australia have kept in touch, they led

:14:40.:14:44.

throughout a lot of the 2nd quarter, into half-time. Mills, and finishing

:14:45.:14:51.

comfortably. Great movement from the Australians in offence. They find

:14:52.:14:52.

the gap so well. The United States is so difficult to

:14:53.:15:03.

contain with the individual players but Bogut stopped Lowry. Bairstow

:15:04.:15:11.

runs away with it, Mills for three. The fast break is on for the USA,

:15:12.:15:16.

Durant, no foul called but it does not go in. Stolen by Lowry, unfairly

:15:17.:15:23.

says the referee and it is a foul on Lowry.

:15:24.:15:30.

Incredible stuff, end to end. Kevin Durant just running into Bogut,

:15:31.:15:39.

there was nothing called. Durant may have felt he got a foul and put up

:15:40.:15:44.

the shot. The follow-up was unsuccessful as well, look at the

:15:45.:15:50.

desperation from David Anderson. Two minutes 18 to play in this third

:15:51.:15:55.

quarter and the USA getting pushed hard by Australia. Two point in it,

:15:56.:16:02.

the USA have the lead. Bains back on for Australia, Ingles. -- this Aron

:16:03.:16:06.

Baynes. Offensive foul called. A reprieve for the United States.

:16:07.:16:30.

Larry Butler, we have not seen much of him so far, the Chicago Bulls

:16:31.:16:38.

player -- Lowry. Jordan, quickly to birdie at that the quickly to Green.

:16:39.:16:44.

-- quickly to Green. Draymond Green for three and it is tipped away but

:16:45.:16:52.

that is a foul against DeAndre Jordan.

:16:53.:17:00.

It is going to be intentional as well because it is two shots for

:17:01.:17:14.

Aron Baynes. Eight a plastic clap from DeAndre Jordan, that will not

:17:15.:17:18.

endear him to directory a sarcastic -- sarcastic clap. A chance for

:17:19.:17:32.

Australia to go level again. Aron Baynes knocks down the first. He

:17:33.:17:37.

plays for the Detroit Pistons in the USA. He will be very familiar with

:17:38.:17:45.

all of these American players. And not afraid to have a chat either.

:17:46.:17:52.

He is two from two and Australia are at level once more with just over 90

:17:53.:18:02.

seconds left in the third quarter. What a job Andrej Lemanis has done

:18:03.:18:04.

with this team, tactically brilliant. So well marshalled,

:18:05.:18:11.

particularly defensively and in front their movement has been

:18:12.:18:17.

fantastic. Draymond Green leaving it for Klay Thompson, long range

:18:18.:18:20.

attempt and he is normally very good from there. Somehow it is kept in,

:18:21.:18:29.

Lowry. Driving them out to Butler, he has time to set himself but it is

:18:30.:18:35.

short. Picked up by Lowry. Foul called on Baynes.

:18:36.:18:43.

Good offensive rebound for Kyle Lowry. Baynes is in foul trouble

:18:44.:18:57.

here. The fourth personal foul and the fourth team foul for Australia.

:18:58.:19:05.

Tussling with the Andre Jordan. They were talking to each other before.

:19:06.:19:13.

The shot clock was reset. Lowry 43, off target. Both teams struggling

:19:14.:19:22.

somewhat from outside right now. It looked like he was going to the

:19:23.:19:28.

shot. Anderson. Can Australia take the lead going into the third

:19:29.:19:32.

quarter? That would be remarkable. Anderson misses. Even going this

:19:33.:19:38.

blog against the USA has been a fantastic effort from Australia.

:19:39.:19:44.

Greene picks up the basket and the foul. Brilliant from Draymond Green.

:19:45.:19:51.

His future team-mate at the Warriors, Kevin Durant was up and

:19:52.:19:56.

applauding. He took the contact from Bairstow and put up the shot. He

:19:57.:20:01.

will go to the line to add the extra point.

:20:02.:20:11.

The United States leading by three now. Full-court press almost from

:20:12.:20:17.

Klay Thompson. Australia still patient. They are

:20:18.:20:28.

not in any hurry am still well in this contest which is a remarkable

:20:29.:20:33.

feat against the number one team in the world. 14 times gold medallists.

:20:34.:20:41.

Ryan Broekhoff just losing it and Lowry comes away with it. A quick

:20:42.:20:48.

pass to Anthony. He cannot get the three and that is the end of the 3rd

:20:49.:20:53.

quarter. It has been better from the USA. They have outshot Australia

:20:54.:20:56.

21-13 and they are leading, 70-67. We will be back for the 4th quarter.

:20:57.:21:18.

Team USA leading by three points. We are down on Copacabana beach and

:21:19.:21:23.

normally at this time of night there is stuff going on. We have one chap,

:21:24.:21:28.

he has an Australian hat. Are you Australian? I will take that as a

:21:29.:21:35.

no! There are not many people around tonight. Normally we have been

:21:36.:21:41.

having people fishing, people on the beach playing something called

:21:42.:21:50.

fresco ball. I want to bring you that live at some stage but it is

:21:51.:21:56.

not happening tonight. And we don't have Antony Worrall Thompson which

:21:57.:21:59.

is a huge disappointment to so many of you. We always have some circuit

:22:00.:22:06.

training going on but it is obviously weather dependent and

:22:07.:22:09.

tonight it is not happening and even our man with his Australian hat is

:22:10.:22:14.

leaving us. Not much is going on but thankfully there has been loads

:22:15.:22:17.

going on and it has been a great day for Team GB. We have had two gold

:22:18.:22:24.

medals and four bronze medals. They have been a few days when we have

:22:25.:22:29.

thought where they were coming from. Until today, we were leading in the

:22:30.:22:33.

countries that finished in fourth place and missed out on medals. We

:22:34.:22:38.

will have a little headline update if you have just come in. Here are

:22:39.:22:45.

the headlines to tell you where Team GB are today.

:22:46.:22:51.

Gold for Joe Clarke in the men's K1. Gold for Jack Laugher and Chris

:22:52.:23:03.

Mears in the three metres men's synchronised springboard final. A

:23:04.:23:10.

bronze in the judo for Sally Conway in the 70 kilograms. Also bronze for

:23:11.:23:19.

Steven Scott in the men's double trap, beating fellow Brit Tim Kneale

:23:20.:23:23.

in the bronze medal match. The first medal of the day came for Chris

:23:24.:23:29.

Froome, bronze in the time trial this morning. And medal number six,

:23:30.:23:37.

Max Whitlock, the first gymnast in the all-around final on the podium

:23:38.:23:40.

in 108 years. Let's go back to the basketball, we

:23:41.:23:53.

are into the 4th quarter. We can see if Australia, who have just made it

:23:54.:24:02.

level, can they do not quote the unthinkable but many people thought

:24:03.:24:05.

this American side would come nowhere near defeat at this Olympics

:24:06.:24:10.

but we are in the 4th quarter and Australia have just taken the lead.

:24:11.:24:17.

They are leading by two with less than nine minutes to play. Anthony

:24:18.:24:30.

gets the basket. It does count for the US. He picked up a foul from

:24:31.:24:35.

Anderson and Anthony will go to the line to try to put the US back in

:24:36.:24:42.

front. That was the move finished off by Ingles, some great passing

:24:43.:24:46.

from Australia. Ingles is another one of the players based in the US

:24:47.:24:54.

with the Utah Jazz. They have had so much to applaud in this game.

:24:55.:25:03.

And the attempt is missed by Anthony. 72-72. Dellavedova for

:25:04.:25:09.

Ingles. Bairstow. Anderson, thought about the shot.

:25:10.:25:23.

The clock is running down, down to five, Dellavedova goes for it and

:25:24.:25:29.

well short. Good defending from the USA, they forced the error and

:25:30.:25:34.

Australia had nowhere to go. Andrej Lemanis talks about movement but it

:25:35.:25:38.

was a bit lacking then. Just over eight minutes to play. Few would

:25:39.:25:44.

have thought Australia would be in this position, level with the USA

:25:45.:25:49.

and that has gone out and it will be an Australian ball. Durant with the

:25:50.:25:57.

error. Turnover from the US. It was a difficult pass, it must be said,

:25:58.:26:04.

from Irving. Dellavedova. Anderson. He picks up the foul. Kyrie Irving

:26:05.:26:15.

not having the best night of his career with the USA. A third

:26:16.:26:17.

personal foul for him. Ingles. Anderson. Having a remarkable game.

:26:18.:26:34.

The shot clock is down again. Dellavedova as to get this out and

:26:35.:26:39.

it is well short. It does not hit the rim and considered not a shot

:26:40.:26:47.

made so eight shot clock violation. Less than eight minutes to play. The

:26:48.:26:54.

US defence has been pretty good, it must be said. They have forced a

:26:55.:26:59.

couple of errors now. A couple of shot clock violations from

:27:00.:27:06.

Australia. Can the Boomers go on with it? Anthony with the three! He

:27:07.:27:12.

waited and thought about it and said yes, I will take this. Dellavedova

:27:13.:27:16.

for Bairstow and they are back within one.

:27:17.:27:24.

The Australian women's team also in attendance. Anthony. And it is

:27:25.:27:36.

back-to-back triples from Carmelo Anthony and that might be what takes

:27:37.:27:41.

the United States through here, the remarkable shooting from outside and

:27:42.:27:44.

they are leading by four and time-out is called. It is 74-78.

:27:45.:27:55.

Carmelo Anthony, so difficult to stop from outside, he has hit a game

:27:56.:28:07.

high 25 points. That is including seven three pointers.

:28:08.:28:17.

Australia have had little answer to Anthony's shooting from outside.

:28:18.:28:24.

They have done well to stop Durant for most of the game, there has been

:28:25.:28:28.

a running battle between him and Andrew Bogut. A real physical,

:28:29.:28:33.

inquisitive encounter, great intensity from both teams here.

:28:34.:28:39.

Australia have gone toe to toe with the United States fought so long now

:28:40.:28:43.

but could this just be the moment where the US start to pull away? --

:28:44.:28:46.

for so long. The United States will be looking to

:28:47.:29:05.

finish strongly but Australia have kept up with them the whole way up

:29:06.:29:11.

until this point. Dellavedova has been providing the assists, 11 for

:29:12.:29:15.

him now which is about what he has averaged in the first two games.

:29:16.:29:21.

Another strong performance, five rebounds and five points, he is a

:29:22.:29:26.

tireless worker. I don't think he has had a break yet, he has played

:29:27.:29:34.

every single minute. Australia get things restarted in this final

:29:35.:29:38.

quarter, seven minutes to play and they are down by four. They lead by

:29:39.:29:46.

five at half-time. Ingles insightful Mills, almost loses it and puts up

:29:47.:29:51.

the shot and it is well off the mark -- inside for Mills. Irving to

:29:52.:29:54.

Thompson. They have defended extremely well,

:29:55.:30:08.

Australia, and kept the USA at bay, particularly from inside but when

:30:09.:30:12.

you have shooters like Durant, who has not been at his best but Anthony

:30:13.:30:17.

and Thompson, it is a difficult task to keep them completely quiet.

:30:18.:30:21.

Durant for three points. He has been off tonight, Kevin Durant.

:30:22.:30:30.

Thompson just holding onto the ball. Happy slowing down the pace, the US.

:30:31.:30:46.

Irving, getting the screen from Jordan, and knocked down by Currie

:30:47.:30:53.

Irving, the lead is down to six now. Dellavedova, from the foul line,

:30:54.:31:04.

that was brilliant -- Kyrie Irving. Amongst Australia's best, as he has

:31:05.:31:09.

been in the opening games. Thompson in for the rebound, he files his

:31:10.:31:13.

opponent and it will be an Australia ball. He's been in the thick of it,

:31:14.:31:23.

Klay Thompson, scratches on his arm. Given by the Australians, that's how

:31:24.:31:28.

they usually play, a fantastic defensive tactical now is added to

:31:29.:31:31.

their game. The offensive movement is impressive. The way they

:31:32.:31:36.

performed in their opening two games, you would have to say that

:31:37.:31:42.

Australia is within medal contention. Patty Mills, for free...

:31:43.:31:53.

-- three. Has not been off target too many times, Mills in this one.

:31:54.:32:05.

He goes for free here... The United States lead is out to seven. They

:32:06.:32:11.

went down by five at half-time, but they are taking control in the final

:32:12.:32:20.

turn for the US. Dellavedova... Andrew Bogut decides not to take the

:32:21.:32:31.

shot. Aron Baynes cannot make the easy attempt, they are starting to

:32:32.:32:36.

come away from them... And neither is it off to Thompson for the corner

:32:37.:32:45.

three, he off target. Klay Thompson, missing an open three from the

:32:46.:32:48.

corner. -- he is off target. Getting the

:32:49.:32:57.

screen and the ball back, that is brilliant from Andrew Bogut and

:32:58.:33:03.

Mills. They combine so well, the

:33:04.:33:08.

Australians. Patty Mills, Andrew Bogut, Dellavedova as well, it is

:33:09.:33:13.

great stuff to watch at times. Five points is the difference. Kyrie

:33:14.:33:17.

Irving gets it in off the glass, a tight angle as well.

:33:18.:33:22.

Four minutes to play, a 7-point lead for the USA.

:33:23.:33:27.

Australia need a strong finish. Patty Mills... Dropping through off

:33:28.:33:33.

the board. Great run, a time out call.

:33:34.:33:38.

Australia 80-85 USA. Patty Mills is having a fantastic

:33:39.:33:49.

night for the Australians, 26 points for Patty Mills. A team high school,

:33:50.:33:56.

only Anthony has scored more than him with 28 in the game. A brilliant

:33:57.:34:02.

movement between Mills and Andrew Bogut. Look at him go. Aron Baynes

:34:03.:34:13.

provides assistance in the middle, the Australians have so much to be

:34:14.:34:18.

happy about. Few, if any, would have expected them to push the USA this

:34:19.:34:24.

far. Few would have considered Australia medal contenders, but here

:34:25.:34:32.

they are. Throw it, curl it, then to the quarterback. The USA, looking to

:34:33.:34:46.

finished wrongly. Make it three wins out of three -- looking to finish

:34:47.:34:50.

strongly. It is not over yet for Australia,

:34:51.:34:54.

still it would be their first loss. If it does not come about, they

:34:55.:34:58.

would be very proud, their performance has been remarkable.

:34:59.:35:06.

It's the brilliance of Carmelo Anthony that pushed the USA ahead.

:35:07.:35:12.

18 three pointers, eight, rather, not 18.

:35:13.:35:22.

Anthony again, that is nine. The lead out for the USA.

:35:23.:35:31.

Just keeping Australia at arms distance. Dellavedova, gets the

:35:32.:35:45.

foul, it is on Kyrie Irving. Three from Anthony. He has the

:35:46.:35:51.

hothead for the United States. 31 points four, low Anthony. Nine of

:35:52.:36:00.

those triples. -- that one points for Anthony.

:36:01.:36:06.

He has struggled in this final turn, Patty Mills, still be top scorer for

:36:07.:36:16.

Australia. 26 points for him. Kyrie Irving, driving but no way through

:36:17.:36:20.

in the middle, the pass goes astray but a foul is called on Dellavedova.

:36:21.:36:28.

Trying to stop Jordan from getting to the ball. Fouled in doing so.

:36:29.:36:40.

Australia doing so well to stop those shots from being made inside.

:36:41.:36:45.

It is a tactic they brought into the game, and executed it well.

:36:46.:36:50.

Individual abilities of the USA, especially from their three points

:36:51.:36:54.

from Anthony, might take them through. Thompson with the jump

:36:55.:37:02.

shot, and again this is the best game for Klay Thompson by any

:37:03.:37:07.

stretch. Shooting at 39% from the field, as Australia get the deficit

:37:08.:37:18.

back with Dellavedova. Kevin Durant to Kyrie Irving. Only six points in

:37:19.:37:25.

it, there is still hope for the boomers. Two minutes 30 seconds left

:37:26.:37:32.

to play, the USA using up the clock. It's an 8-point game now. They have

:37:33.:37:39.

wrestled control back, the USA. Down by five at half-time. Down in the

:37:40.:37:44.

third and fourth quarters. Patty Mills... Picking up the foul. Klay

:37:45.:37:58.

Thompson... They need a big finish here. This team will still have

:37:59.:38:08.

belief, but it is a tough task. The 15th foul from the USA. Two minutes

:38:09.:38:17.

11 seconds left to play. Jordan takes a breather. Patty Mills goes

:38:18.:38:30.

to the foul line, with two shots. Brian broke off checks in for

:38:31.:38:41.

Australia. -- Ryan Broekhoff. Because these teams are in the same

:38:42.:38:46.

group, if they both qualify for the quarterfinals, and are in first and

:38:47.:38:49.

second place, they would meet until the final. You might even consider

:38:50.:38:54.

this could be a gold medal match. Still a long way to go. Still have

:38:55.:38:59.

to finish this one! Australia are six points behind with two minutes

:39:00.:39:06.

11 seconds left in this game. It is a position they probably would not

:39:07.:39:11.

have taken before it started, Kyrie Irving puts it up but was

:39:12.:39:16.

unsuccessful. Patty Mills reduces the deficit to four. Less than two

:39:17.:39:20.

minutes to play. The leaf on the Australian bench. -- belief. George,

:39:21.:39:31.

not taking the shot. The US, winding down the clock. It is a slender

:39:32.:39:38.

lead, particularly by their standards. Irving breaks three, that

:39:39.:39:46.

is what they call in America clutch. Under pressure, the shot clock

:39:47.:39:52.

winding down, and he knocks down three with ease. Dellavedova to

:39:53.:39:56.

Patty Mills. Dellavedova is there. It turned out to be an assist for

:39:57.:40:01.

Dellavedova. Five points in it. 20 to play. The USA will soak up every

:40:02.:40:08.

second. They have been in contest here. Thompson keeps it in... Kevin

:40:09.:40:15.

Durant with a quick pass out, Patty Mills has the steal. Mills can't

:40:16.:40:25.

believe it, it was so close. Dellavedova comes in at the

:40:26.:40:29.

opportunity then. Just putting it back in. Five points in it now. One

:40:30.:40:40.

minute seven seconds left to play. It's a story from the ages for

:40:41.:40:46.

Australia, whatever happens here. Anthony does not go for the three,

:40:47.:40:51.

pressured by Andrew Bogut. Too much to go around, but he tries. The shot

:40:52.:40:55.

clock winding down, no choice but what a rebound from the USA, that

:40:56.:41:01.

could be so important with the clock ticking down. They pick up the foul,

:41:02.:41:06.

that's on Ingles. 21 offensive rebounds from the US. They might say

:41:07.:41:13.

it could be the area we lost it... If they do, it's not over yet. Five

:41:14.:41:21.

points in it. 51 seconds left to play. The USA looking at the clock,

:41:22.:41:30.

they've not done that in the final turn at any game at the Olympics

:41:31.:41:37.

yet. Unbeaten for so long, never lost to Australia in the major

:41:38.:41:41.

competition. The clock is running down on them. I'm sure they know it,

:41:42.:41:46.

it will be a shot clock violation on the USA. Its Australian possession,

:41:47.:41:51.

it could still be done with 36 seconds left. Five points in it.

:41:52.:42:01.

What a grandstand finish we could have here, Australia has pushed USA

:42:02.:42:07.

all the way. It might have been an intentional foul from, low

:42:08.:42:15.

Anthony... -- from Carmelo Anthony. If so, that would be massive, two

:42:16.:42:21.

shots for Australia and the ball back. The referee was pointing at a

:42:22.:42:34.

shot clock violation. What a tough encounter this has been for the USA.

:42:35.:42:40.

The coach was expecting it. With the quality of this Australian team, it

:42:41.:42:44.

will be Australian possession. 36 seconds left to go. It is a 5-point

:42:45.:42:58.

game. Wins by 57 and 44 points, it's an arrow margin here for the United

:42:59.:43:07.

States. -- a narrow margin. Pressure from Thompson, and Ingles. Doesn't

:43:08.:43:12.

drop for him, rebounding from the USA. They get the foul from Kevin

:43:13.:43:20.

Durant. Patty Mills, rather, the contact was on Kevin Durant. 27.8

:43:21.:43:28.

seconds, even those tenths of seconds could be important at the

:43:29.:43:32.

end of this game. Jordan takes a breather. Australia need the ball,

:43:33.:43:50.

five points behind. Pressure from Dellavedova. Just trying to stop the

:43:51.:44:00.

clock now. It's getting to the stage where the alleyway Australia can win

:44:01.:44:03.

is to foul their opponents, hope they missed the free throws, stop

:44:04.:44:10.

the clock if you seconds, then go the other end and make sure that

:44:11.:44:13.

they score. There is still the chance, but it gets a bit harder at

:44:14.:44:15.

this stage. Kyrie Irving, the player they wanted to

:44:16.:44:36.

foul. Jordan is off the court. Kyrie Irving misses. Well, some hope for

:44:37.:44:46.

Australia still. A 6-point gap. Certainly capable of pulling that

:44:47.:44:50.

back, Australia. Seven would be more than two baskets. Gets down on the

:44:51.:44:59.

second attempt. We have a 6-point game, time-out with 27 seconds left

:45:00.:45:00.

to play. The final instructions for now from

:45:01.:45:05.

Mike Krzyzewski and Andrej Lemanis. STUDIO: We're going to state with

:45:06.:45:47.

this until the end of this match but we have Tim Vickery with us so if

:45:48.:45:51.

you have any questions you would like to send through to ask you

:45:52.:45:54.

about Brazil or the Olympics and how they have gone down here, the

:45:55.:46:00.

legacy, how much has been spent, how the locals feel, send them through

:46:01.:46:05.

on twitter or use the hashtag ABC Rio 2016 and we will put some of

:46:06.:46:16.

those two team -- EPC. -- BBC. And maybe get some reflections on

:46:17.:46:22.

Raffaella Silber winning the gold medal -- Rafaela Silva. And we will

:46:23.:46:30.

have some beach volleyball in about 15 minutes time but back to the

:46:31.:46:32.

basketball first. COMMENTATOR: Australia restart.

:46:33.:46:45.

Mills might be for three points, a difficult effort under pressure and

:46:46.:46:49.

look at the commitment from the players. No side ready to give any

:46:50.:46:58.

inch at all. It is going down to the wire here. Dellavedova is not one to

:46:59.:47:10.

stop. George was driven into the photographers. The United States

:47:11.:47:14.

leading by six. They are looking a bit more relaxed, a few less

:47:15.:47:16.

frustrated faces. Six points in it, 20 seconds left,

:47:17.:47:44.

it is still doable for Australia. Pushing the United States all the

:47:45.:47:50.

way to the last few seconds. There has been some expert shooting from

:47:51.:47:55.

Irving and Anthony which has pushed the United States into the lead.

:47:56.:48:01.

Carmelo Anthony with a game-high 31 points. Including an impressive nine

:48:02.:48:11.

three pointers. They have managed to keep the United States quiet,

:48:12.:48:16.

particularly on the inside, in the paint. The Australians have

:48:17.:48:21.

dominated defensively and put great pressure on the US offence but even

:48:22.:48:25.

still, the United States are ahead here. Not the best game for Klay

:48:26.:48:34.

Thompson. Mike Krzyzewski hoping his side can now see it out. 22nd left

:48:35.:48:43.

the United States ball, Australia looking to foul. Dellavedova felt he

:48:44.:48:50.

almost got the ball. 17 seconds left. Kyrie Irving will go to the

:48:51.:48:57.

line to try to extend the lead and maybe even put it beyond the reach

:48:58.:49:09.

of Australia. The player born in Melbourne. Had history been

:49:10.:49:16.

different, you might have even played for Australia. His dad played

:49:17.:49:27.

for the Bendigo Spirit. Now he is looking to lead the United States to

:49:28.:49:30.

victory over Australia and eight points is the difference now. Ryan

:49:31.:49:38.

Broekhoff for three points but not successful and that might be it.

:49:39.:49:43.

They have done remarkably well to push the USA this far. They led by

:49:44.:49:49.

five points at half-time. They even lead in the final term but the

:49:50.:49:55.

quality of the American offence has shone through in this second half.

:49:56.:50:02.

They have outshot Australia 26-21. Joe Ingles has fouled out. Seven

:50:03.:50:11.

points for him come three rebound and an assist. He has worked

:50:12.:50:15.

extremely hard, particularly defensively. Six and a half seconds

:50:16.:50:23.

to play as Goulding checks back in. Kevin Durant is at the line. Durant

:50:24.:50:37.

successful with the first from the line and the USA are going to secure

:50:38.:50:43.

victory with a third straight win but by far their most hard-fought.

:50:44.:50:49.

Two from two from the line and the clock will play down, Dellavedova

:50:50.:50:53.

might go for another effort before the buzzer. That is the final buzzer

:50:54.:50:57.

and what a performance from Australia. They worked so hard and

:50:58.:51:02.

pushed the United States but in the end the USA have come through.

:51:03.:51:06.

88-98. The least surprising thing you will

:51:07.:51:16.

here all night is that Team USA are still unbeaten in this Olympic

:51:17.:51:20.

competition and somebody has sent me through a stat which I have not

:51:21.:51:24.

checked but it sounds plausible so I will tell you anyway. A journalist

:51:25.:51:28.

has tweeted that the Americans record in Olympic basketball over

:51:29.:51:36.

the years now is played 138, won 133, which is probably why they are

:51:37.:51:41.

favourites again even though they are without some of their big stars.

:51:42.:51:47.

Although quite a few NBA stars in that Australian team and they look

:51:48.:51:50.

certain to get through to the knockout stages of the basketball.

:51:51.:51:54.

As the commonest, delighted to say that Tim Vickery has joined us here.

:51:55.:52:03.

What a studio! I can confirm this is not Whitley Bay! It is Rio de

:52:04.:52:07.

Janeiro. I know it does not feel like the tropics but this is

:52:08.:52:11.

Copacabana. We have been needing that all night, even when I got the

:52:12.:52:18.

coconut out people were doubting it. Loads of questions coming in. First

:52:19.:52:23.

your assessment, you live here and you have been here for a long time

:52:24.:52:27.

and you understand the Brazilian psyche. I'm trying, even after 22

:52:28.:52:33.

years! It is hard for us to turn up and explain to people at home what

:52:34.:52:39.

it's like but how have the Olympus gone down so far for the people in

:52:40.:52:45.

Rio and also Brazil? To take you back for years, I came over to

:52:46.:52:48.

London but I made sure I was back here in Rio for the end, the closing

:52:49.:52:53.

ceremony when Rio becomes the next Olympic city. And in the closing

:52:54.:52:57.

ceremony, Rio at a few minutes to present itself to the world and I

:52:58.:53:01.

thought I would go down to street level and wander around my block to

:53:02.:53:04.

see what the reaction is from the local people, about my city being

:53:05.:53:11.

the Olympic city. I live in a nice neighbourhood, 25 bars, not one was

:53:12.:53:15.

showing the rear part of the closing ceremony. Why? Because two Rio teams

:53:16.:53:23.

were playing football in the Brazilian First Division. That

:53:24.:53:27.

really shows you firstly the challenge of this Olympics, there is

:53:28.:53:32.

so little Olympic tradition in this part of the world. This is the first

:53:33.:53:36.

time we have at the Olympics in South America. The king of the

:53:37.:53:42.

Olympics is track and field. That is the prestige event. Who is the

:53:43.:53:46.

fastest man in the world? The fastest woman? Who can jump highest

:53:47.:53:51.

and furthest? I did a TV programme last week with a man who will be

:53:52.:53:54.

commentating on that for Brazilian TV and we agreed that you could stop

:53:55.:53:59.

100 people on the street here and ask them for a name of a track and

:54:00.:54:03.

field athlete and the vast majority would not get beyond Usain Bolt.

:54:04.:54:08.

That is the challenge the Olympics has had here. And it helps to

:54:09.:54:12.

explain why there is so much emphasis on the football tournament

:54:13.:54:16.

and why Ozil's disappointing displays are important. -- Brazil's

:54:17.:54:23.

disappointing displays. We have not shown that much football yet. Brazil

:54:24.:54:29.

drew with Iraqi. The only thing that I have seen taking football off the

:54:30.:54:33.

front pages was Rafaela Silva winning in the judo. Because

:54:34.:54:38.

football is so dominant. It is and every TV executive tells me the same

:54:39.:54:43.

thing I heard this last week from a TV senior. Deep down, Brazilians are

:54:44.:54:48.

not that much into sport. They are into winning. That is why Neymar at

:54:49.:54:53.

the moment is getting such stick because Brazil are not winning.

:54:54.:55:00.

Especially when they have less gold in the tournament so far than Fiji.

:55:01.:55:05.

It also helps to explain that phrase that Brazilians are more interested

:55:06.:55:11.

in winning than sport, it explains why Rafaela Silva is so important.

:55:12.:55:17.

It is the Christine Ohuruogu of Rio 2016, the local girl made good. It

:55:18.:55:24.

gets on the front page. And there is a little English angle to this

:55:25.:55:31.

story. She comes from the City Of God which is a poor neighbourhood

:55:32.:55:35.

and not far from the Olympic Park. She got into judo as a kid because

:55:36.:55:41.

there is a social project they're called Reaction which was started by

:55:42.:55:49.

a former Judeo -- judo athlete who was born in Oxford. His father was

:55:50.:55:55.

doing a doctorate at Oxford University at the time when he was

:55:56.:56:00.

born. He is 100% Brazilian but born in England and whenever I meet him

:56:01.:56:04.

we greet as compatriots. You can trace the line from Oxford to the

:56:05.:56:10.

City Of God to the gold medal podium. It is an amazing story. The

:56:11.:56:16.

guy in my hotel, that is the only time he has not talked about

:56:17.:56:22.

football, when she won. Quite a few questions about tickets, what is the

:56:23.:56:26.

situation like with the locals? Why so many empty seats? Even the

:56:27.:56:33.

Olympic Park at times. Does it go back to the athletics again? There

:56:34.:56:38.

is very little tradition in a lot of these sports. They will turn out if

:56:39.:56:42.

there is a Brazilian with a chance of a medal. But for a lot of these

:56:43.:56:46.

sport there is little tradition and also you have to remember that this

:56:47.:56:51.

country, when it was awarded the Olympics, the idea was to showcase

:56:52.:56:56.

an economy on the rise but boom has turned to depression which is part

:56:57.:57:01.

of the controversial backdrop to the Games, people questioning if Brazil

:57:02.:57:04.

should be doing this. And transport as well, it is a big city, a

:57:05.:57:09.

sprawling Olympics, it is not easy to get to some of these venues. I

:57:10.:57:14.

heard some horror stories from the night before last with people who

:57:15.:57:18.

had stayed until the end of the swimming. In order to get the

:57:19.:57:24.

underground back, first you have got to get a bus so it is a long

:57:25.:57:28.

journey, a bus ride to the underground station. People got the

:57:29.:57:33.

bus and the station was closed. Stranded in the middle of nowhere

:57:34.:57:37.

will stop there is the difficulties of transport and getting around the

:57:38.:57:43.

city. Brazil is a society where they like to do things at the last

:57:44.:57:47.

minute, even buying tickets. There was a splurge in sales after the

:57:48.:57:52.

opening ceremony. I think the organisers are quite happy with how

:57:53.:57:55.

things have gone because they have hit their targets. To compare it

:57:56.:58:00.

with London, with all of that culture that the British public have

:58:01.:58:04.

being great spectators, I think it was always a bit unfair. And the

:58:05.:58:08.

cost is an issue as well, some locals saying they might be able to

:58:09.:58:12.

buy one ticket but if they are going to one event, they will go to

:58:13.:58:16.

something later in the games. Yes and remember there is a depression

:58:17.:58:22.

on so cost it an issue. Now that the Brazilian women in the couple have

:58:23.:58:25.

started so well, suddenly people are trying to buy tickets for the final

:58:26.:58:29.

but that is how it works around here. And one of the other thing

:58:30.:58:39.

that somebody who lives here said to me, the concern they had was that

:58:40.:58:43.

there has been a new Metro line open up but only journalists and

:58:44.:58:47.

accredited media can use it. If it is available for local if you have a

:58:48.:58:50.

ticket but not the normal population. The big logistical

:58:51.:58:55.

nightmare of these games is transport, it is the thing that has

:58:56.:58:58.

been most worrying the organising committee. Can they get the athlete

:58:59.:59:04.

and fans around? The schools are on holiday, a lot of the government

:59:05.:59:08.

buildings, nobody is there. They are trying to cut down transport as much

:59:09.:59:12.

as possible in order to facilitate the smooth running. And a lot of

:59:13.:59:18.

people asking about legacy. When we look back at London now, we think it

:59:19.:59:23.

was a huge success not just from a medal 's perspective but the way it

:59:24.:59:26.

was run and how other countries looked back on it. In four years, is

:59:27.:59:32.

we are in Tokyo having this conversation, and I'm asking about

:59:33.:59:36.

the success of these games, how do you think they will be looked back

:59:37.:59:37.

on? I think the city has more from the

:59:38.:59:45.

Olympics than it got from the World Cup. There have been improvements in

:59:46.:59:50.

public transport. Remember the wave of protests in 2013? That started

:59:51.:59:54.

about the issue of public transport. The World Cup had promised so much

:59:55.:59:58.

on that issue and not delivered anything. In terms of the Olympics,

:59:59.:00:02.

you had to improve transport just in order to have the games. You had to

:00:03.:00:06.

extend the subway system and have improvements on for sport. There has

:00:07.:00:16.

been some legacy. It could have been much better but there has been some

:00:17.:00:19.

legacy. In terms of the sporting culture of Brazil, I do think there

:00:20.:00:21.

will be an inspirational effect. Brazil should be much, much better

:00:22.:00:24.

in athletics than it is. The mere fact of having the best athletes in

:00:25.:00:28.

the world, I think it will have an inspirational effect. The problem

:00:29.:00:32.

is, will there be the facilities around to catch those people who

:00:33.:00:37.

have been inspired to take up sport? And that, unfortunately, I very much

:00:38.:00:41.

doubt. One other one, which I wanted us to add other people might be

:00:42.:00:45.

interested, the weather. Stop laughing! I know we are in Brazil,

:00:46.:00:50.

but have I come thoroughly unprepared? Somebody said to me,

:00:51.:00:54.

this is the only time that courts have been worn on Copacabana Beach!

:00:55.:00:58.

The World Cup got lucky two years ago because it was hot. The year

:00:59.:01:02.

before there was the visit of the Pope and the meeting of the Catholic

:01:03.:01:06.

youth, they were very, very unlucky because it tipped it down. Rio in

:01:07.:01:10.

the rain does not have a great deal to recommend it. The forecast looks

:01:11.:01:16.

as if we are going to be lucky. Next week at the moment the forecast has

:01:17.:01:19.

got the temperatures in the mid-teens and son. In my shallow and

:01:20.:01:22.

superficial mind I have always believed that the success of this

:01:23.:01:26.

event, the weather is crucial. Those TV images that are broadcasting

:01:27.:01:31.

back, they look so good, Rio is so beautiful in the sunshine but not

:01:32.:01:35.

quite so beautiful today. It is always a pleasure to talk to you,

:01:36.:01:41.

thanks to your time. You can tell it is not Rio weather, because even the

:01:42.:01:45.

beach volleyball stars are, not entirely covered up, but wearing

:01:46.:01:48.

more than you would normally expect them to. Live on BBC Four, this is

:01:49.:01:54.

team USA taking on the Smith. Kerri Walsh Jennings a bit of a legend in

:01:55.:01:57.

beach volleyball, everybody knows her, she's a three-time Olympic gold

:01:58.:02:02.

medallist, going for another one, taking on Switzerland. Commentary

:02:03.:02:04.

from the arena just down the other end of Copacabana comes from Brit.

:02:05.:02:28.

April transitions, puts it away, quick Time out by the Swiss. The USA

:02:29.:02:33.

leads 3-0 in the first set. The Swiss trying to gain their

:02:34.:03:31.

composure. Against a very tough and very daunting Walsh Jennings and

:03:32.:03:36.

Ross of America. Just long. It's a good decision by

:03:37.:04:01.

Isabelle Forrer, just missed. But of all beach volleyball venue here in

:04:02.:04:06.

Rio de Janeiro, seats 12,000 on the western edge of Copacabana. April

:04:07.:04:13.

Ross just missing along. The US leads 4-1 here in certain number

:04:14.:04:21.

one. April has been voted the best server three times -- set number

:04:22.:04:26.

one. She has a wicked jump topspin but has currently been using her

:04:27.:04:32.

jump flow. More often. Little cobra poke. Using just her fingertips to

:04:33.:04:42.

get it out of reach. Out of reach of Forrer.

:04:43.:04:54.

Misses just long, Verge-Depre. Side switch, 6-1 the USA leads.

:04:55.:05:37.

Walsh Jennings... April Ross. This team defence is in absolute sink.

:05:38.:05:53.

There is not a lot of space for teams to score against them.

:05:54.:06:04.

LAUGHTER Their play is in total sink, their

:06:05.:06:15.

high-fives on the other hand could use some work, I'm sure that the

:06:16.:06:20.

least of their concerns! 8-1 B USA leads. -- the USA.

:06:21.:06:26.

Depre scores. Walsh Jennings made the right move on this. Just glanced

:06:27.:06:42.

off the hand. Kind of got to a depth where it is a hard decision whether

:06:43.:06:46.

to dig a ball underhand or over hand when it is right at your chest.

:06:47.:06:54.

Squirrelly paths. But Kerri puts it away.

:06:55.:06:59.

Forrer was there. Down in the upper arm.

:07:00.:07:19.

Walsh Jennings goes off Depre. Depre only 24 years old, Isabelle Forrer

:07:20.:07:52.

is 34. Got it down the line! Switch sides.

:07:53.:08:10.

10-4. The US leads. Switch sides on multiples of seven full of us to

:08:11.:08:14.

Macs that is, if it goes to a third and deciding set, that is only

:08:15.:08:21.

played to 15. The teams switch on multiples of five. -- the first two

:08:22.:08:22.

sets. Aggressive set by April Ross pays

:08:23.:08:34.

off. Since Kerri Walsh Jennings is six foot three. They call her six

:08:35.:08:40.

feet of sunshine. Even when the sun is not out here on

:08:41.:08:54.

Copacabana Beach. April Ross misses Short.

:08:55.:09:02.

Quite the temperature drop. Today, as opposed to previous days here at

:09:03.:09:11.

the Olympics. Kerri Walsh Jennings scores quickly down the line.

:09:12.:09:20.

She had to go fast. The Swiss were in an angled the fence. She does it.

:09:21.:09:40.

-- were in an angled defence. Depre misses wide. Sometimes when you hear

:09:41.:09:45.

the nobody call and you know that the blocker is pulling, it causes a

:09:46.:09:55.

bit of frantic play. That's exactly what team USA caused there. Unforced

:09:56.:09:58.

error, and then they keep it simple on their side of the net.

:09:59.:10:05.

April Ross, good vision, Kerri Walsh Jennings giving her the nobody call.

:10:06.:10:09.

Great placement, good hand. That set tailed off the net just a

:10:10.:10:20.

bit at the end. Great feet, great footwork. By April Ross.

:10:21.:10:37.

Anouk Verge-Depre blasting a ball. Cool aerial shot of the beach

:10:38.:10:46.

volleyball venue here on the western edge of Copacabana. Knock all pokey

:10:47.:10:55.

deep corner, Kerri Walsh Jennings scores. -- knock or pokey. That is

:10:56.:11:01.

our first technical time-out, 15-6 the USA leads.

:11:02.:11:39.

The Americans have been incredibly efficient here in certain number

:11:40.:11:53.

one. -- set number one. The rain has stopped.

:11:54.:12:03.

The Americans looking to bring the heat.

:12:04.:12:29.

Verge-Depre with a swift block, it cuts. It cuts the American lead by

:12:30.:12:36.

one. Fighting off a tough stuff, is Kerri

:12:37.:12:49.

Walsh Jennings, high in line. -- toughs serve. It's good.

:12:50.:12:58.

Verge-Depre gets her second block of the match. One against April Ross.

:12:59.:13:23.

And one against Kerri Walsh Jennings.

:13:24.:13:35.

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross play at such a high level, it's

:13:36.:13:41.

difficult to play against and stay disciplined.

:13:42.:13:46.

Sometimes you feel like you have to do more, more than you can do at the

:13:47.:14:00.

moment. Verge-Depre staying really disciplined in that block, low and

:14:01.:14:01.

over. Isabelle Forrer, gaining some

:14:02.:14:20.

confidence for the Swiss. They have strong a couple of points together,

:14:21.:14:24.

sliding into Kerri Walsh Jennings's rests away on that all add putting

:14:25.:14:27.

it away down the line herself. What a rally! Fighting off an

:14:28.:15:00.

extremely tough serve, Ross and Walsh Jennings pulling up an

:15:01.:15:07.

incredible set from her knees. Staying in the play, and here's an

:15:08.:15:21.

unforced error. It is an aggressive set, but to aggressive against a

:15:22.:15:24.

blocker like Kerri Walsh Jennings. Great dig and put away by April

:15:25.:15:36.

Ross. Isabelle Forrer, sweet it'll cut

:15:37.:16:08.

shot just out of the reach of April Ross. We switch sides, USA lead to

:16:09.:16:13.

17-11 here in set number one. Depre misses long, good leave by the

:16:14.:16:27.

Americans. US goes after Isabelle Forrer that

:16:28.:16:57.

time. And that is what forehead is known for. Her line shot is clean.

:16:58.:17:06.

Over the top of both defenders goes Kerri Walsh Jennings.

:17:07.:17:18.

Off the hands of Anouk Verge-Depre. Walsh Jennings down the line, a slow

:17:19.:17:36.

death there for the Swiss. USA have their first set 20-12. They go after

:17:37.:17:41.

Isabelle Forrer again, off the hands of Kerri Walsh Jennings. Points West

:17:42.:17:45.

is -- Swiss. What they set out of the net by

:17:46.:18:06.

April Ross. That patience and that skill. It is quite impressive. The

:18:07.:18:16.

Americans have a lot of support here tonight in pool C action of women's

:18:17.:18:22.

beach volleyball. USA take the first set 21-13.

:18:23.:18:29.

And we will be back for the second set in a moment. Over on BBC One,

:18:30.:18:36.

big match, crucial one, actually, in the men's hockey, Team GB take on

:18:37.:18:39.

Australia. I thought we were going to get a goal there while we were

:18:40.:18:43.

showing you! It is goalless into the third quarter of that match.

:18:44.:18:47.

Australia have lost both their games so far, so this is an important one,

:18:48.:18:52.

and it will be crucial, quite important to see the second-half

:18:53.:19:00.

here, that is on BBC One at the moment. On the website, you can

:19:01.:19:05.

watch a spot of table tennis. This is the bronze medal match for the

:19:06.:19:08.

women, we will be there a little later. You can book yourselves in if

:19:09.:19:12.

you fancy a ding-dong in the ping-pong. The gold medal matches

:19:13.:19:22.

coming up at 1.30 your time, so you will see that, we will leave the

:19:23.:19:31.

beach volleyball to watch that. Team USA doing what we thought they would

:19:32.:19:36.

do. Doing well against the Swiss. If they win this one, that is another

:19:37.:19:40.

victory in the bag. Backhand flip on that, takes it with

:19:41.:20:00.

the right hand, going to the left. Isabelle Forrer trying to do the

:20:01.:20:02.

same. Kerri Walsh Jennings. I believe that is her third block of

:20:03.:20:17.

the match. The Americans have gone back after

:20:18.:20:29.

Anouk Verge-Depre. Just long. Hammering is April Ross. Ross hits

:20:30.:21:04.

such a heavy ball, and she was incomplete rhythm on that pass by

:21:05.:21:12.

Kerri Walsh Jennings. -- she was in complete with. Kerri Walsh Jennings

:21:13.:21:17.

suffered a shoulder injury during the beginning part of this

:21:18.:21:21.

qualification period which required Ross to hit an two quite often, and

:21:22.:21:29.

Kerri are bit of the physical load in that regard. And all that has

:21:30.:21:34.

done is that has turned into yet another weapon for the Americans.

:21:35.:21:43.

They saw it as a bonus to learn how to win within the limitations, and

:21:44.:21:49.

now that everybody is healthy and back 100%, they now have more tools

:21:50.:21:53.

in that tool box, and they are pulling them all out here in Rio.

:21:54.:22:31.

Verge-Depre trying to come up with a quick answer before time runs out on

:22:32.:22:38.

this thing. Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross lead 4-1 here in the

:22:39.:22:41.

second set, the Swiss took an early time-out in set number one as well.

:22:42.:22:48.

They don't quite have an answer yet. Pretty high line shot by Anouk

:22:49.:22:54.

Verge-Depre. The Swiss looking to get something

:22:55.:22:59.

going here in set number two. April Ross Yeses wide. -- misses

:23:00.:23:26.

wide. We switch sides at 4-3, team United States is up.

:23:27.:23:43.

Forrer ripping an two. It is an awkward move, especially coming from

:23:44.:23:54.

the right side of the court for a right-hander, but she does it very

:23:55.:23:55.

well. They call a double on April Ross,

:23:56.:24:30.

saying that the dog, Anouk Depre did not touch that. We have a video

:24:31.:24:36.

challenge. The challenge system is quite new to beach volleyball. I

:24:37.:24:42.

appreciate it. It ensures they get the call right. However, in these

:24:43.:24:49.

Olympic Games already, we have seen some arguable results because of it.

:24:50.:25:01.

In what a player can actually challenge.

:25:02.:25:18.

There was a touch, I think we could all see that at home. The athletes

:25:19.:25:36.

no longer can rely or fake out the referees with their acting skills.

:25:37.:25:43.

Good luck, bad luck, who knows. Some of them have got very, very good at

:25:44.:25:45.

that. April Ross orator little bit right

:25:46.:26:15.

there. Verge-Depre, great position and great timing. April Ross hits

:26:16.:26:22.

such a heavy ball that it's got to come back even faster.

:26:23.:26:33.

April Ross responding, catching the line on that one. We are all tied

:26:34.:26:41.

up, 5-5 here in set number two. Kerri Walsh Jennings says I got your

:26:42.:26:57.

back, April. The Swiss playing much more

:26:58.:27:42.

aggressive after their time-out early here in set number two.

:27:43.:28:13.

What they get! Isabelle Forrer was an April's cut shot, and then places

:28:14.:28:31.

it almost perfectly. And just like that, the Swiss gain

:28:32.:28:58.

control. After being down 4-1 out of the gates of set number two here,

:28:59.:29:08.

USA won set number 120-13. -- set number one, 20-13. April Ross keeps

:29:09.:29:13.

it simple, goes across court. Set number one, the Swiss were going

:29:14.:29:18.

after Kerri Walsh Jennings, they have switched their game and started

:29:19.:29:20.

going after April Ross. Verge-Depre has got her share of

:29:21.:29:31.

blocks in this sector. Great rally, great net play by both

:29:32.:29:45.

sides. April Ross just pounding that

:29:46.:30:24.

sideline. She is so strong. Kerri Walsh Jennings... What's

:30:25.:30:56.

impressive about that plague is how she was recovering from her shoulder

:30:57.:31:01.

injury, she had to play with her and non-dominant hand, her left hand --

:31:02.:31:06.

that play. Her and April are still incredibly successful.

:31:07.:31:13.

STUDIO: Don't get angry, but we're going to leave the beach volleyball,

:31:14.:31:18.

but with good reason. You can continue to watch that via the Red

:31:19.:31:30.

Button. We are going because, as promised, we have a gold medal match

:31:31.:31:34.

which promises to be a real beauty. We're going to go to Riocentro

:31:35.:31:42.

Pavilion End three, the women's singles gold medals match. It sees

:31:43.:31:46.

Ning Ding taking gone Xiaoxia Li, they are both from China, Xiaoxia Li

:31:47.:31:50.

is the defending champion. Prepare yourself for magic on the table. Old

:31:51.:31:56.

and silver medal up for grabs. The commentators are Simon Reeve and

:31:57.:32:01.

Paul hand. -- gold and silver. COMMENTATOR: This should be a

:32:02.:32:05.

cracker. All Chinese, but plenty of passion here. This is a repeat of

:32:06.:32:09.

the Olympic gold medal match in London. And there is no love lost

:32:10.:32:20.

between these two. Xiaoxia Li, the current Olympic champion, Ning Ding,

:32:21.:32:23.

her opponent, the number two in the world, the current world champion.

:32:24.:32:32.

So, will events turn around four years later? We shall see. Xiaoxia

:32:33.:32:36.

Li to begin. She hasn't dropped a game all the

:32:37.:32:47.

way through. Xiaoxia Li has been playing some

:32:48.:33:09.

really good table tennis, as you say. Including that win in the

:33:10.:33:16.

semifinal earlier this morning, 10am. Fukuhara failed to win the

:33:17.:33:27.

bronze medal, that when the king sunny, who did well in the semifinal

:33:28.:33:29.

against Ding Ning. -- Kim Song EE. The runner-up in the Olympics, the

:33:30.:33:46.

reigning world champion, twice a world champion, Ning Ding.

:33:47.:33:57.

It is the one thing she hasn't got in her locker, the Olympic gold

:33:58.:34:07.

medal. As you've imagined, they've played a lot over the years, these

:34:08.:34:11.

two, they are very, very familiar. They play on the same Chinese team,

:34:12.:34:15.

the team event that starts on Friday. They have met 22 times. Ding

:34:16.:34:21.

has won 12 of those meetings. Incidentally, the world number one

:34:22.:34:34.

didn't compete in the singles, she wasn't chosen by the Chinese to be

:34:35.:34:40.

the world number one since December. She will play on the team

:34:41.:34:43.

competition which starts on Friday, but the Chinese decided that these

:34:44.:34:47.

two were the best bets for the singles title. You have to guess

:34:48.:34:52.

that they were right. This is a devastating start for Ning Ding.

:34:53.:35:10.

One of the features when you watch the lady in pink, Ning Ding, she has

:35:11.:35:17.

got the coolest hand style in table tennis, no doubt about that, it

:35:18.:35:21.

barely moves, but she is a terrific athlete Angie plays the majority of

:35:22.:35:25.

the ball on her forehand, so adept at running around the backhand, so

:35:26.:35:30.

adept at doing so, her nephew style is quite quirky. -- her nephew --

:35:31.:35:40.

her nifty style. Xiaoxia Li is incredibly powerful, loves to get on

:35:41.:35:44.

the front foot, she can rip through opponents like a chainsaw because

:35:45.:35:45.

she is so bristling with power. It must be an unnerving start,

:35:46.:36:01.

though. Sporadic success. She to a world champion, won the worlds in

:36:02.:36:05.

Paris in 2013. Bronze medallist in last year's World Championship in

:36:06.:36:07.

China. I think it always takes a little

:36:08.:36:22.

while to get used to a lefty, because they play so few lefties,

:36:23.:36:26.

that is probably worth a couple of points a game in favour of Ning Ding

:36:27.:36:32.

herself, you can see how adept she is, she has versatility, very

:36:33.:36:33.

explosive. Lee can't really get it going, no

:36:34.:36:42.

rhythm at all. -- Xiaoxia Li. This is more like it, but it's

:36:43.:37:18.

probably going to be too late to save this opening game. The

:37:19.:37:23.

best-of-7, the first of four games. The first 11 points. -- the first to

:37:24.:37:32.

11 points. Xiaoxia Li is two years senior, in black, she is the team

:37:33.:37:36.

captain of the team event, she is the elder statesman. You wouldn't

:37:37.:37:40.

think so at the moment though, it is that with the ascendancy. She is

:37:41.:37:45.

nibbling away at that commanding lead -- it is Ding Ning at the

:37:46.:37:47.

ascendancy. Wow. What a scorching return.

:37:48.:38:05.

Dismissive, taken so early and thunderously hit. She hinged well

:38:06.:38:09.

with the ankle and wrist. Look at that, so quick to get onto it. These

:38:10.:38:13.

two know each other patterns of play like no other, that is what is going

:38:14.:38:18.

to make this such an exciting encounter. They have met so many

:38:19.:38:22.

times, practised so many times together over the years, really good

:38:23.:38:25.

buddies, but that is all to one side. That is a terrific end. Enter

:38:26.:38:33.

this opening game, five successive points for Li. -- end to this

:38:34.:38:39.

opening game. She is really making that power tell.

:38:40.:39:04.

Unbelievable! Ding Ning getting lucky, the net cord proved decisive,

:39:05.:39:15.

ferocious attack nullified by a bit of luck, but also by Ding Ning. Two

:39:16.:39:18.

game points. Oh, what a waste. Yeah, just

:39:19.:39:44.

overcooking the length on that one. Both players have had runs of five

:39:45.:39:48.

points in this game, it's been terrific.

:39:49.:39:53.

Game point gain on her serve, it will need to be a better served than

:39:54.:39:57.

the last one -- again. She nails it! The earlier advantage

:39:58.:40:18.

had proved decisive. Li coming back and showing that she is going to be

:40:19.:40:24.

a huge contender in this gold medal match. So the first game to Ding

:40:25.:40:33.

Ning, eight minutes, in 11.2 nine. There was enough in the latter

:40:34.:40:36.

stages of this game to make it really up in the balance -- 11-9.

:40:37.:40:42.

Particularly when you consider that Ding Ning was 6-1 up with a

:40:43.:40:47.

sparkling start, but Xiaoxia Li nibbling back at her. It was a very

:40:48.:40:53.

competitive, sharp end to the opening game. If that is what we

:40:54.:40:56.

have got to look forward to in the games ahead, it is just so exciting.

:40:57.:41:05.

Interestingly, Ding Ning drops to her haunches and flings it from

:41:06.:41:08.

reverse sides of the bat on her serve. But Xiaoxia Li just dismisses

:41:09.:41:15.

it. Officials of the IOC watching gone. -- watching on.

:41:16.:41:25.

The winner of the opening game starts the second.

:41:26.:41:39.

Xiaoxia Li is normally so adept at getting on to the attack, the

:41:40.:41:47.

Frankfurt very quickly. But against Ding Ning denied because the quality

:41:48.:41:51.

is so good -- getting on the front foot. What a turnaround that. --

:41:52.:42:01.

there. Such ferocity from Li. Yes, she didn't have a lot of backswing

:42:02.:42:04.

on the backhand but it came through with real force and set up a point

:42:05.:42:06.

for the forehand attack. Dean likes to play with a lot more

:42:07.:42:21.

loop off both sides, it mulls in the air and deviate as it hits the table

:42:22.:42:27.

-- Ding Ning. Whereas Li is much flatter and firmer in her concise

:42:28.:42:28.

attacks. It is a thick edge finish just off

:42:29.:42:36.

the side of the paint. Oh, mesmerising play! Thunderous,

:42:37.:43:09.

really quite something to be part of. It real privilege. I love those

:43:10.:43:15.

rallies, high octane tempo. So watchful, just in case it flicked

:43:16.:43:42.

out onto the table. Undaunted by dropping the first game, Li, right

:43:43.:43:47.

onto the attacks, the start of game number two.

:43:48.:44:07.

Just got a hand under the end of the table, nowhere for to go.

:44:08.:44:29.

Well, in contrast to Game one, it is a much stronger start from Xiaoxia

:44:30.:44:34.

Li in this game. Just not able to deal with this

:44:35.:44:58.

ferocious attack at the moment. Getting in really quickly there of

:44:59.:45:01.

that backhand return. There is just no hiding place.

:45:02.:45:23.

Anything that pops up even mildly is being buried. It was a thunderous

:45:24.:45:30.

attack, just crunched into the left pocket of Ding Ning who could barely

:45:31.:45:37.

get out of the way. She has got attitude, Li.

:45:38.:45:43.

She is all over Ding Ning at the moment. She is like Serena Williams

:45:44.:45:54.

in the tennis equivalent, the energy she brings, and she magnetise is you

:45:55.:45:56.

to her. She is very powerful. Well, she seems unstoppable at the

:45:57.:46:24.

moment. She is taking it particularly early at the moment,

:46:25.:46:29.

very early and very strong, using the table. Ding struggling to get it

:46:30.:46:38.

out of Li Xiaoxia's shot. Great ability to change the point of

:46:39.:47:02.

attack when she can get off. But the occasions have been very few in this

:47:03.:47:06.

second game. She plays with a lot more margin, Ding Ning, whereas Li

:47:07.:47:12.

Xiaoxia, hard and early, minimal backswing.

:47:13.:47:19.

Really good, spinning serve. Again, nothing that Ding could do about

:47:20.:47:32.

that. Five-game points to level up at a game apiece.

:47:33.:47:38.

Well, devastating at the start of that second game, from the get go.

:47:39.:47:48.

She is firmly in control at the moment. She has got the long levers,

:47:49.:47:56.

Li Xiaoxia, remarkably compact shots taken early. This was always build

:47:57.:48:02.

to be a Crackerjack match, and it is developing into that already, it is

:48:03.:48:08.

so watchable, so intriguing. Will Ding Ning avenge the loss four years

:48:09.:48:13.

ago, or will Li Xiaoxia retain the title?

:48:14.:48:20.

Table tennis in the fold in the Olympics from Seoul in 1988. China,

:48:21.:48:31.

not surprisingly, have won all seven women's singles titles, and five of

:48:32.:48:37.

the seven silver medals as well. And you can see, the level here is

:48:38.:48:42.

simply astonishing. It has been well documented, the Imperial city of the

:48:43.:48:52.

Chinese, they are just so strong. -- the imperiousness of the Chinese, so

:48:53.:48:55.

strong in this game. Game three. What can Ding do to try to stem the

:48:56.:49:17.

tide which is building so solidly against her?

:49:18.:49:29.

Ding generally of late has been losing the battle, she has been

:49:30.:49:38.

playing centrally on the table, if she could try to get Li Xiaoxia off

:49:39.:49:43.

to an angle, get on the stretch. When it is in her slot, Li Xiaoxia

:49:44.:49:45.

is very powerful and dangerous. When these two met in the Olympic

:49:46.:50:28.

final in London in 2012, there was quite a bit of an altercation

:50:29.:50:34.

between Ding here and the Italian umpire, who Dr three penalty points,

:50:35.:50:40.

one for an illegal serve, one for wasting time, and one for taking the

:50:41.:50:44.

towel too early, and she never recovered from that.

:50:45.:50:47.

Psychologically, that was crushing. Not the same successfully at the

:50:48.:51:03.

start of game number three, but I don't imagine she is going into her

:51:04.:51:04.

shell. Just breathtaking stuff. She loved

:51:05.:51:23.

that play, that is one of those long rallies you don't want to be coming

:51:24.:51:26.

out on the losing side of, psychologically.

:51:27.:51:46.

The shots that were homing in so consistently in game number two just

:51:47.:51:54.

aren't now. She has lost, the radar has switched off temporarily. They

:51:55.:52:00.

are living at such an outstanding rally tempo. You have to be fully

:52:01.:52:04.

focused. Isn't it amazing how it can turn

:52:05.:52:15.

around? It is, I think it is very subtle, and to the untrained eye, it

:52:16.:52:20.

is hard to see, but Ding just putting on a little more pressure, a

:52:21.:52:23.

little more spin, changing the speed and spins.

:52:24.:52:32.

And you can sense the reticence of both to back away from the table,

:52:33.:52:37.

they don't want to give the other that increment of time. Five

:52:38.:52:42.

successive points she had won before that.

:52:43.:52:58.

Great defence from Ding Ning! The number one seed now. She is really

:52:59.:53:09.

strutting her stuff. She did really well to get round this backhand and

:53:10.:53:13.

just unleash the forehand for this rally, terrific stuff from Ding

:53:14.:53:14.

Ning. Suddenly she is eating into that

:53:15.:54:04.

lead of Ding 's. We know when she gets her mojo going high devastating

:54:05.:54:10.

she can be. When she gets onto the front of the table with that early

:54:11.:54:14.

backhand, it is so concise and telling, and even if it comes back,

:54:15.:54:18.

there is a forehand to follow up with crushing power.

:54:19.:54:27.

So good, because she changed the point of attack, Li, and I thought

:54:28.:54:36.

she had won the point, but Ding had read it. Yes, the trouble is when

:54:37.:54:43.

you change things, the opponent can bite you back, and she read it.

:54:44.:55:00.

Still work to do. She hasn't got rid of her in this third game.

:55:01.:55:09.

Well, that is the price you pay. If she is going to hit the forehand

:55:10.:55:31.

from that far wide. You surrender a lot of court when you were on around

:55:32.:55:39.

-- runaround at any stage. Look at that reflection from Li Xiaoxia, so

:55:40.:55:43.

focused. What a crucial serve this is now from Ding.

:55:44.:55:53.

Again, it seemed a great return, but Ding was onto it, and she is now two

:55:54.:56:07.

points away from regaining the lead. The first example of the Tomahawk

:56:08.:56:14.

serve from Ding, she normally uses it a lot, but Li Xiaoxia is up to

:56:15.:56:22.

it. Li with two serves of her own to reduce the deficit. Not that time.

:56:23.:56:52.

Just a little bit of height on that second shot, and Li was in. She has

:56:53.:57:03.

done really well to draw level here, Li Xiaoxia, showing a lot of

:57:04.:57:07.

character. Desperate defence from Ding Ning.

:57:08.:57:31.

Again, forcing her wide to play that forehand from the backhand side, and

:57:32.:57:38.

she has got game point now, has Li Xiaoxia.

:57:39.:58:09.

Well, but Tomahawk serve did the job, ten point each, first to two

:58:10.:58:18.

ahead now, and the serve changes hands on every point. Scoreboard

:58:19.:58:25.

parity, as anticipated, a really tight affair for this gold-medal

:58:26.:58:26.

match. Whatever the score, whatever the

:58:27.:58:44.

situation of the match, if she sees half an opportunity, bingo. Such a

:58:45.:58:49.

serve, loaded with spin, and the return got what it deserved. Credit

:58:50.:58:51.

to the server, Li there, very brave. CHEERING

:58:52.:59:16.

She was taking it to the brink there, allowing Li on that forehand,

:59:17.:59:20.

but it worked. Yes, just when you sure that Li had

:59:21.:59:28.

the upper hand, Ding biting back with that sting. A steely look she

:59:29.:59:33.

gave her. They both have attitude here, bundles of it.

:59:34.:59:46.

Again, quick on the attack, Li, and a third game point.

:59:47.:00:17.

Yes, the surface did the job. She knows exactly what served she wants

:00:18.:00:33.

to put in -- the survey did the job. Going with game plan A, indeed they

:00:34.:00:49.

both are, right now. It is about pitting their strengths against

:00:50.:00:49.

there opponent's weakness. Great forehand flick return,

:00:50.:01:13.

disguised and deceptive, could not get a read on that. A fourth game

:01:14.:01:18.

point, this time, importantly, it is dealing with the serve.

:01:19.:01:21.
