Well come back to Rio for coverage of the men's all-around final, where

:00:21.:00:28.

Max Whitlock is trying to win a medal, it would be Britain's first

:00:29.:00:34.

since 1908, it has already been a historic day, because Jack Laugher

:00:35.:00:36.

and Chris Mears won a first ever gold medal, and I will hand you back

:00:37.:00:48.

to Dan Greaves -- Dan Keating and Beth Tweddle.

:00:49.:00:50.

COMMENTATOR: This is Chris Brooks of the USA on the floor. Lovely

:00:51.:00:54.

handspring and double somersault to start.

:00:55.:01:08.

Obviously he likes working forward, that was a double twist in front.

:01:09.:01:20.

On the fifth of six pieces. Christopher Brooks will have this

:01:21.:01:27.

and pommel horse to go. One and three quarters somersault,

:01:28.:01:37.

you land on your hands and roll out of it.

:01:38.:01:44.

Good 2.5 twist, he is delighted with that performance. Well, that was a

:01:45.:02:08.

great high bar routine. Lin Chaopan was just outside the medals in four

:02:09.:02:13.

of going into this but evaporated. High bar is in store for him -- this

:02:14.:02:19.

piece of apparatus. With floor to go.

:02:20.:02:23.

And now this is the piece that he can pick his scores up with. Posted

:02:24.:02:31.

a seven difficulty in qualification. Really good difficult, lovely full

:02:32.:02:47.

twist in the somersault. Somersault over the bar. 1.5 turn.

:02:48.:02:55.

Very nice close bar works, lovely straight front somersault to grasp

:02:56.:02:59.

the bar. Full turn to the Marco love.

:03:00.:03:12.

Building his difficulty. Complex routine. Well, we have seen a lot of

:03:13.:03:20.

good landings, but that was among the best. Absolute relief to go

:03:21.:03:25.

through a high bar routine like that. Difficulty matched execution.

:03:26.:03:32.

That was really good. So many different combinations in it. It is

:03:33.:03:40.

quite a versatile routine. It was really quite nice to see. Well, last

:03:41.:03:48.

year this gymnast, Deng Shudi, got a bronze on this piece of apparatus.

:03:49.:03:52.

He has qualified third for the high bar final here in Rio.

:03:53.:03:57.

A prize with the double back. -- a prize. Huge double back between the

:03:58.:04:11.

bars. Another double pike somersault

:04:12.:04:19.

between the bars, building the difficulty.

:04:20.:04:26.

Nice on the bar combination. -- under bar. Another double

:04:27.:04:32.

somersault. Moving towards the end. The main part is finished. Down to

:04:33.:04:48.

the dismount. Oh, these gymnasts are just

:04:49.:05:06.

defying... What is humanly possible! It is just quite remarkable, they're

:05:07.:05:09.

making it look so easy. They are, and team from China are fantastic on

:05:10.:05:18.

the bars. 14.64 Chris Brooks on the floor. I mean, goodness me. -- 14.6

:05:19.:05:23.

four Chris Brooks. One of the very exciting new young

:05:24.:05:33.

gymnasts from China on the scene. But this parallel bar work... He

:05:34.:05:41.

posted a 7.2 difficulty, which is enormous in the qualification. And

:05:42.:05:48.

when they came to the team competition, the team from China are

:05:49.:05:51.

all had start scores of over seven parallel bars. It is on this that

:05:52.:05:55.

they are experts. It is so difficult, yet so tidy.

:05:56.:06:11.

That the secret, really. If it's tidy, the judges can't take too much

:06:12.:06:16.

of. No, not at all. I would be surprised if that is under 16.

:06:17.:06:24.

Deng Shudi scores 15.9 66. Just under that 16. Just looking at Lin

:06:25.:06:39.

Chaopan's score on high bar, that puts him very, very close, just .1

:06:40.:06:48.

two. It is so close, this. David Belyavskiy for Russia. With his

:06:49.:06:55.

penultimate piece of apparatus in this men's all-round final. Just to

:06:56.:07:01.

remind the gymnasts get higher scores for building their

:07:02.:07:04.

difficulty, and that difficulty score is added to the execution.

:07:05.:07:07.

Really nice start. Rise with the full turn to

:07:08.:07:13.

handstand. Double half term. He absorbs that

:07:14.:07:58.

really well. Hugh does, he has improved so much on this apparatus.

:07:59.:08:02.

He has always have the potential but never quite hit it perfectly in

:08:03.:08:07.

competition. But this last year, in every competition. He has hit all of

:08:08.:08:13.

his apparatus. In fact, these top few have been really solid. Yet

:08:14.:08:17.

committee didn't used to be the most inconsistent gymnast. I think he was

:08:18.:08:24.

changing his routines too much. I think he has finally found the

:08:25.:08:29.

perfect routine for himself. And now he is quite stable. Which is the

:08:30.:08:37.

secret, really. To have routines that you can manage with control

:08:38.:08:43.

then you just slot odd bits of improved difficulty in. And of

:08:44.:08:50.

course, he, like Uchimura, have got that T-Mobile behind them. -- that

:08:51.:08:58.

team medal. I think that meant to Russia and Japan most, the team

:08:59.:09:03.

result. These are the icing on the take, the individuals. Let's see

:09:04.:09:12.

what the current European champion gets in this all-round final. Just

:09:13.:09:17.

one piece to go after that. And it is the high bar. It is 15.9 33. That

:09:18.:09:31.

is a big, big score. .1 behind Max Whitlock. So, as it stands, I mean,

:09:32.:09:36.

this is unbelievable. Between Max Whitlock in second and the gymnast

:09:37.:09:46.

in faith -- fifth, there is only .3, which is like a step. Uchimura now.

:09:47.:09:55.

An parallel bars. World champion. This is a really important routine

:09:56.:09:56.

for him. Double hike with the kick-out. --

:09:57.:09:59.

double pike. It looked like he looked for that

:10:00.:10:46.

landing but didn't quite stick it. It was a big hop. I mean, this is

:10:47.:10:50.

going right down to the wire, it really is. The Naib, Max Whitlock,

:10:51.:10:55.

everybody is just looking down and trying to remain focused. And not be

:10:56.:11:00.

distracted by what is going on here in this final. -- Oleg Verniaiev. Do

:11:01.:11:08.

you think Uchimura increased his difficulty? He performed a 68 in

:11:09.:11:13.

qualification. I think that was around the same. Do you think? You

:11:14.:11:18.

don't think you posted? I always get the feeling there is a lot more in

:11:19.:11:22.

the locker if he is under pressure of having to perform so what you

:11:23.:11:23.

don't think he pushed it. Really clean work. He is another

:11:24.:11:37.

one, they are all enormously classy gymnasts. The extension out of that

:11:38.:11:46.

somersault to be able to then move instantly into the next high

:11:47.:11:48.

somersault, very impressive. How he manages to keep so composed

:11:49.:11:59.

under incredible pressure is what makes this gymnast the gymnast that

:12:00.:12:09.

he is. 15 six. It is still Oleg Verniaiev in first, Uchimura in

:12:10.:12:16.

second, works which -- Max Whitlock hanging in there in bronze with one

:12:17.:12:20.

piece of apparatus to go. He did it with a superb high bar routine. So

:12:21.:12:29.

this was the move that he had in his qualifications. He fell on this in

:12:30.:12:33.

the World Championships last year, and he managed to hold on.

:12:34.:12:38.

So here is confirmation, one piece to go. Verniaiev leads this men's

:12:39.:13:00.

all-round final. Belyavskiy is very, very close in fourth, as is Lin

:13:01.:13:09.

Chaopan and Deng Shudi. The top group in high bar, Max's group is in

:13:10.:13:16.

the second group on floor. This is going down to a few steps. It is the

:13:17.:13:21.

last piece of apparatus, and there are six people who can still medal.

:13:22.:13:26.

It really is now who does the best routine in this final piece. If you

:13:27.:13:30.

were in this situation, would you rather do flaw high bar? Floor,

:13:31.:13:38.

floor all day. So you think Max has an advantage? I don't want to say

:13:39.:13:43.

advantage, but I think high bar is quite easy to miss all easy to

:13:44.:13:49.

catch. What you mean is, Max will be very happy he is on the floor!

:13:50.:13:55.

Belyavskiy, the gymnast who is so very close to winning his over on

:13:56.:13:57.

the high bar. Oh, what a final piece of apparatus

:13:58.:14:06.

in this men's all-round final. It has been a very, very long way

:14:07.:14:12.

around. Six pieces. All gymnasts have worked five so far.

:14:13.:14:24.

All gymnasts have worked five so far.

:14:25.:14:28.

And you really do want to see everybody, you don't want to see

:14:29.:14:37.

anybody caving at this stage, you want the best person to win. You

:14:38.:14:43.

don't want to win by somebody else falling. You can see Nile warming up

:14:44.:15:00.

there, on the high bar. And Nile Wilson, can I see is that eighth

:15:01.:15:05.

position, creeping up, with his best piece still to come.

:15:06.:15:31.

Action all around the arena. So, this top group on high bar. Nile

:15:32.:15:40.

Wilson will go second from great written. But the first gymnast upon

:15:41.:15:53.

floor is Max Whitlock. It is in his hands now. He is a world silver

:15:54.:16:01.

medallist on floor. He knows he has got the difficulty, he has got the

:16:02.:16:08.

execution as well. Can he do it? I think he just has to concentrate on

:16:09.:16:14.

all the tumbles he has done in training, all the routines, it all

:16:15.:16:19.

comes down to this one moment. He has been training so hard, he has

:16:20.:16:23.

put in the numbers, I'm sure he can get there.

:16:24.:16:28.

As focused as he likes to be, Max, you can't help but feel the tension

:16:29.:16:37.

in this place. It really is going right down to the wire, this. There

:16:38.:16:43.

are six gymnasts who can still potentially medal, Max Whitlock in

:16:44.:16:48.

third going into this final piece of apparatus. If he can medal, it will

:16:49.:16:55.

be the first time in an all-round final four 108 years. He can do

:16:56.:17:03.

this, this is within his grasp. All of the training, all of the hours,

:17:04.:17:09.

all coming down to this one piece of apparatus. Routine number six at the

:17:10.:17:17.

Olympic all-round final. Come on, Max. Just like in training every

:17:18.:17:20.

day. He just played a little bit safe on

:17:21.:17:27.

the three and a half. Nice role out of the one and three

:17:28.:18:18.

quarters. Come on, Max! Triple to finish! What a performance from Max

:18:19.:18:27.

Whitlock! Well, is it going to be enough? There is going to be a long

:18:28.:18:33.

and anxious wait. Just took the wind out of his sails a little bit on

:18:34.:18:37.

that penultimate tumble. He has done his job, though. He stayed on his

:18:38.:18:43.

feet. The pressure is now on everyone else, they have to try to

:18:44.:18:47.

beat him. That is very true, Dan. He has just snap at the three and a

:18:48.:18:55.

half, but he got away with it. That was a very efficient triple to

:18:56.:19:01.

finish. So, and anxious wait for Max Whitlock, and an anxious wait for

:19:02.:19:07.

Great Britain as we have to watch the high bar now, as his main rivals

:19:08.:19:09.

are over there. So, Kato, one of the gymnast in

:19:10.:19:52.

contention. And here comes the big release, the risk. The full turn,

:19:53.:19:55.

safely on. Another big release. Travel over the

:19:56.:20:14.

bar, that time with the full twist, the tuck twist, very nice pirouette.

:20:15.:20:26.

Oh, he has come off! He has done so much good work, and then right at

:20:27.:20:32.

that very last bit. Kato is OK, but he is out of the running as far as a

:20:33.:20:38.

medal is concerned. He looked like he had got his hands right over, but

:20:39.:20:45.

you have a Dowle, a weight you have to make sure you get over the bar.

:20:46.:20:52.

And actually, from this top group, that is the first error we have seen

:20:53.:20:55.

from anyone. Up into the forward swing, the end.

:20:56.:21:15.

Tuck with full turn, it was almost his last skill. What a shame. That

:21:16.:21:22.

is why this Olympic order is so, so testing. It tests all of the body,

:21:23.:21:28.

and then you get around to the high bar. 15.2 for Max Whitlock, puts him

:21:29.:21:37.

on a score of 90.641. That is the definition of an anxious wait. It is

:21:38.:21:40.

indeed. Lovely extension out of that catch.

:21:41.:22:02.

The idea is to kick right out so that you can continue the next move.

:22:03.:22:08.

And extend again there, but that's the one that he missed. You can see

:22:09.:22:11.

the bar pinyin away there. Well, just trying to do some sums

:22:12.:22:38.

here, and work out who needs what. We will bring that to you as quickly

:22:39.:22:45.

as we can. Kato will wait for his score. Deng needs 15.477, Belyavskiy

:22:46.:23:03.

needs a big score, Lin Chaopan and needs around 15.3. What do we six,

:23:04.:23:11.

Dan? It is going to be close. It is going to be close. I'm nervous! Of

:23:12.:23:30.

course! 13.9 four Kato. 88 .59 is his final score after six pieces of

:23:31.:23:37.

apparatus. It seems to have been working so incredibly well, and then

:23:38.:23:40.

suddenly the pressure builds. To be able to compete at this level,. Nile

:23:41.:23:51.

Wilson is the next gymnast on the high bar. Uchimura can only wonder

:23:52.:23:59.

what the high bar has in store for him. Deng Shudi as well and the

:24:00.:24:07.

running. Deng needs 15 point 477, barley of ski needs 15.276. --

:24:08.:24:15.

Belyavskiy. He did score a 13.66 in

:24:16.:24:32.

qualification, but a 6.6 difficulty, so if it goes to plan. And a little

:24:33.:24:39.

step there, two big tumbles to start. That was very nicely done,

:24:40.:24:43.

three and a half. Two and a half twists from the front

:24:44.:24:54.

somersault. Working with good style, with

:24:55.:25:18.

precision. Now, one more tumble left, one more

:25:19.:25:32.

landing to make, then it is in the hands of the judges. Triple twist, a

:25:33.:25:41.

little hop back. They were very comparative or routines. They were.

:25:42.:25:45.

Let's talk to doctors, Dan. What do you think? There was quite a lot of

:25:46.:25:51.

deductions on landings, but it is a high start score, so it depends if

:25:52.:26:05.

they take 1s or 3s. He needs 15.277 to go ahead of Max Whitlock into

:26:06.:26:11.

that third place as it stands. What we think, Chris? If he has got the

:26:12.:26:20.

6.6 start which he had in qualification, then he is not .4 up

:26:21.:26:27.

on Macs in difficulty. The question is, was he .4 down in execution?

:26:28.:26:31.

There was one big step at the very beginning, that was a low landing. I

:26:32.:26:37.

think it will be very tight, they are very comparator.

:26:38.:26:50.

Well, Verniaiev, a lonely figure, just composing himself, as is

:26:51.:27:02.

Uchimura. It is going right down to the final tenths, this. Deng Shudi

:27:03.:27:12.

needs a score of 15.477 to knock Max Whitlock out of that third spot.

:27:13.:27:25.

Still waiting for Linnes score to come in. That was a very confident

:27:26.:27:44.

release with half turn. And again, beautiful straight body, swings

:27:45.:27:52.

straight out. That was a very nice pirouette, finishing in handstand.

:27:53.:27:58.

He just stalled at the top there, got it the right way round.

:27:59.:28:11.

Full-term, uses the body to lift, the two twists, controls the

:28:12.:28:21.

landing. Is it enough? Will the Scobbie big enough? He used every

:28:22.:28:28.

single muscle in his body to try to hold that landing, not to give too

:28:29.:28:35.

much away. It is 14.866 four Lin Chaopan and, so he finishes behind

:28:36.:28:40.

Max Whitlock. Max still in the lead as it stands, because Uchimura and

:28:41.:28:47.

Verniaiev have not been yet. Belyavskiy needs 15.276. And this is

:28:48.:28:55.

a very important score to come in as well.

:28:56.:29:03.

Viz gymnasts swinging high bar is so well, the big skills, linked into

:29:04.:29:13.

the routine. We have barely seen anybody stop and need an extra

:29:14.:29:18.

swing. We have barely seen a step on any landings, really. Such big

:29:19.:29:23.

landings, they are nearly off the end of the matter. Three gymnasts

:29:24.:29:27.

left to go on high bar. It is not good enough, 14.966 four

:29:28.:29:39.

Deng Shudi. Max Whitlock still hanging on. One more gymnast to go

:29:40.:29:45.

that can knock him out of the top spot. He looks more pressured now

:29:46.:29:53.

looking at the scoreboard than he has in the rest of the competition.

:29:54.:29:58.

Max Whitlock in with a great shout for a bronze here in this meant's

:29:59.:30:01.

all-round final, the only gymnast who can ruin the party is this man.

:30:02.:30:10.

15.276 is what Belyavskiy needs for Russia.

:30:11.:30:18.

He has got a really very original high bar routine, the one Arm

:30:19.:30:22.

Circle. Here we go with the big releases.

:30:23.:30:26.

Straight body. Fulfils all his requirements. The

:30:27.:30:46.

closed bar element, that turn was a little late, but he securely makes

:30:47.:30:55.

the catch. And circling in the inverted swing.

:30:56.:31:02.

Lift up, just the single twisting dismount, great landing. That was an

:31:03.:31:11.

unbelievable high bar routine. This is going right down to the wire.

:31:12.:31:17.

CLARE BALDING: Max Whitlock looks up anxiously at the scoreboard, the

:31:18.:31:20.

Russian celebrates, we will bring you the conclusion of this all-round

:31:21.:31:22.

final on BBC One now. nothing says Rio de Janeiro

:31:23.:31:28.

quite like it. So I've come here to Rio to explore

:31:29.:31:33.

the culture and the people

:31:34.:31:37.
