away anything. The jump, slight pause before the free cartwheel.

:00:00.:00:10.

Just building up. Which dismount will she use? Double Arabian, oh...

:00:11.:00:26.

Just slightly over of -- overregulated it. Brand-new

:00:27.:00:31.

dismount, but she went for broke. That's a shame because it was a

:00:32.:00:37.

great beam routine. We are back on floor with Aly Raisman to see a few

:00:38.:00:43.

more of her tumbles and goodness me. You can see how much it meant to

:00:44.:00:48.

her. She took a couple of years away after London 2012 and then really

:00:49.:00:51.

fought back to get into that team and as soon as she landed that

:00:52.:00:55.

tumble, just the emotion flooded out. 15.433 is enough to push

:00:56.:01:01.

Mustafina down into that third position, with one gymnast left to

:01:02.:01:09.

go. So Simone Biles will wrap up this women's all-around final with

:01:10.:01:12.

fireworks. This am for gold in the women's

:01:13.:01:27.

all-around final. The smile says it all. She loves to perform. Double

:01:28.:01:29.

straight somersault with the twist. Not daunted, enjoying every minute

:01:30.:01:49.

of it. Double straight with half turn, immediate jump.

:01:50.:02:08.

Watch this for a third tumble, double twisting, double straight,

:02:09.:02:20.

only took half a run. One last tumble, to become Olympic

:02:21.:02:41.

champion. Here it is. Absolutely no doubting.

:02:42.:02:47.

And what a champion! Finishes with a flourish and there is gold number

:02:48.:02:58.

two for Simone Biles. Absolutely superb performance.

:02:59.:03:03.

CHEERING Wow, the adoration and the disbelief

:03:04.:03:07.

that is going around this arena right now, to witness this. To be

:03:08.:03:16.

here, to watch that! It was just something else. Well, to watch both

:03:17.:03:22.

the American gymnasts on floor, they were so positive, so well rehearsed.

:03:23.:03:36.

And the experience must have been to console said Tutkhalyan, she tried

:03:37.:03:41.

but it wasn't to be. So it's one and two to the USA and Mustafina will

:03:42.:03:49.

take the bronze. Which I think she will be highly delighted to come

:03:50.:03:50.

away with. Just 4'8", but full of power and

:03:51.:04:07.

it's almost confusing, isn't it, how she manages to do that. You were

:04:08.:04:11.

talking about that third tumble, Chris, and the power that she must

:04:12.:04:16.

have, and to keep it going. Yes, and she doesn't need to take long

:04:17.:04:20.

run-ins to things. She is by a long way the most powerful gymnast I have

:04:21.:04:24.

ever seen. And doing the most difficult work we have ever seen in

:04:25.:04:28.

women's gymnastics. To be honest, that floor routine would stand up in

:04:29.:04:41.

the men's flaws, it was really exceptional work. You can see the

:04:42.:04:44.

pop -- the disappointment in the eyes of several of the others. I

:04:45.:04:48.

think Mustafina will be very happy with the bronze medal. She has had

:04:49.:04:53.

an up-and-down year. She wins bronze here, Aly Raisman, just outside the

:04:54.:04:57.

all-around medals, the last Olympics but she is on the podium and its

:04:58.:05:04.

silver for her, and there is confirmation that Simone Biles, with

:05:05.:05:12.

a 15.933 is the women's all-around Olympic champion. It's USA one and

:05:13.:05:20.

two Russia bronze. And this is a moment that she will remember all

:05:21.:05:26.

her life. It's one thing to get gold in the individual apparatus finals,

:05:27.:05:31.

but quite another, Chris, to the Olympic champion all-around.

:05:32.:05:35.

Absolutely and not been done for a long time for the current world

:05:36.:05:40.

champion to then come and be Olympic champion, three times world

:05:41.:05:44.

champion, now Olympic champion. Really dominated women's gymnastics

:05:45.:05:49.

in a way we haven't seen for many, many years. And what a display. Aly

:05:50.:05:54.

Raisman didn't really make the impact she would have wanted earlier

:05:55.:05:58.

on in the competition, but what a second-half. Yes, she looked a bit

:05:59.:06:03.

edgy, Raisman, and although she is very well trained, she is very

:06:04.:06:08.

powerful, she showed she was a little bit human, whereas really

:06:09.:06:14.

Simone Biles doesn't show that frailty at all.

:06:15.:06:22.

It will just be huge relief for Simone Biles to come here with so

:06:23.:06:29.

much expectation on her shoulders. 19 years old. That's only going to

:06:30.:06:33.

build, Chris, because the media are talking about the fact she could get

:06:34.:06:38.

five gold medals at a single Olympics, so everybody is going to

:06:39.:06:43.

be on her back from now. This is two golds already, she can't win the

:06:44.:06:46.

bars but the other three pieces she could well win. She has posted the

:06:47.:06:51.

top score all the way around but Russia, they took the two in silver

:06:52.:06:55.

and now on individual bronze, that's a big success for them as well. And

:06:56.:06:59.

absolute delight in the USA camp. And really, as you were saying, the

:07:00.:07:15.

fact that only two gymnasts Donacien allowed in, you know, the

:07:16.:07:20.

third-place gymnast last night, Gavin Jim -- Gabby Douglas, the

:07:21.:07:24.

defending champion from the Olympic, she qualified third but couldn't

:07:25.:07:27.

take part because of the two gymnasts only per nation rule I will

:07:28.:07:33.

be think there's an argument to allow at least three so all the

:07:34.:07:38.

medals can be contested for. There was only something like 0.1 between

:07:39.:07:42.

Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas in that qualification, so it came right

:07:43.:07:47.

down to the wire, which other gymnasts from the USA was going to

:07:48.:07:51.

be given the opportunity to get a medal. Yes, absolutely, so I don't

:07:52.:07:55.

know whether it is something the federation might look at but we did

:07:56.:08:00.

at one time allow three in, but then it was a bigger competition with 36

:08:01.:08:04.

and it all round, here we've only got 24. And Beth, as a former world

:08:05.:08:12.

for champion yourself, you must have enjoyed that routine? It was, I mean

:08:13.:08:19.

the standard of the floor routines since London 2012 have dramatically

:08:20.:08:27.

increased, so I'm glad I'm not in this floor at all! I think the top

:08:28.:08:32.

two have increased but I'm not so sure that they have so dramatically

:08:33.:08:36.

increased after that. I mean in fact Ellie Downie did very similar

:08:37.:08:42.

tumbles that you did and I'm just having a little look, she was one of

:08:43.:08:50.

the highest scorers on floor, so I think the top two are in a league of

:08:51.:08:55.

their own on floor here, don't you think? They are, throughout the

:08:56.:08:59.

competition they showed that class and determination. It really shows

:09:00.:09:03.

how much preparation goes into it. I know that their preparation is very

:09:04.:09:11.

hard, they do lots of routines, there is no letup on it. Lots of

:09:12.:09:16.

results come from it, being able to ground -- being able to be crowned

:09:17.:09:21.

one and two at the Olympics Dane is. This is Ellie Downie's final

:09:22.:09:27.

routine, she did a really good performance on beam. She has worked

:09:28.:09:32.

very, very hard and improved fantastically. The front somersault

:09:33.:09:36.

linked to the jump gives those that 0.1 bonus and this is the skill that

:09:37.:09:41.

is very difficult and can sometimes be inconsistent but today, not at

:09:42.:09:45.

all. She held on to the standing half turn, into front somersault.

:09:46.:09:52.

Lovely split position in her leaps. And interestingly enough, this

:09:53.:10:03.

routine gave her a total that put her 13th. Her elder sister in

:10:04.:10:13.

Beijing was 12 DH macro. -- 12th. The very similar series, the

:10:14.:10:18.

backflip and the layout somersault. She had paused their before the free

:10:19.:10:23.

cart wheel, probably starting to think about the dismount. She has

:10:24.:10:28.

used the two and a half twisting dismount throughout the

:10:29.:10:31.

Championships, but she has been preparing this very difficult double

:10:32.:10:35.

Arabian and decided she might as well go for broke, so she did. Watch

:10:36.:10:41.

it, she just didn't come out with quite enough conviction to hold it.

:10:42.:10:48.

That was one hallmark deduction, but the actual routine was beautiful. --

:10:49.:10:54.

one hole mark. It seems, we talked about this, she is 17 years old and

:10:55.:11:00.

taking all of this experience, how do you think that will have affected

:11:01.:11:04.

her? Obviously she's disappointed because she could have made a real

:11:05.:11:08.

impact in that top ten especially with everything that was going on

:11:09.:11:11.

here, but will she be able to take the positives away? I think she

:11:12.:11:16.

will, the fact she got that new dismount on beam in such a big

:11:17.:11:19.

arena, she can use that for future competitions knowing she has now

:11:20.:11:22.

performed under that pressure and knowing how much to give it, how

:11:23.:11:32.

much not to give it, so every competition she has done she will

:11:33.:11:35.

learn something from it and then use it for future and she will hopefully

:11:36.:11:40.

be in Tokyo in 2020. Absolutely, David McDaid is going to put that

:11:41.:11:43.

question to her now. Let's hear from Ellie Downie. Just tell us your

:11:44.:11:49.

thoughts after that? Yes, I would be lying if I said I wasn't slightly

:11:50.:11:53.

disappointed with that. I had a really good start on floor and

:11:54.:11:59.

vault, and on the bars I have missed that dismount all week, it was a

:12:00.:12:02.

concentration thing, my dismount I have not been able to train it so

:12:03.:12:08.

much because I hurt my back in qualification. -- in training. I

:12:09.:12:12.

thought I would go all out today and try the dismount. I have been doing

:12:13.:12:16.

it for a couple of years but not many times in competition and it

:12:17.:12:19.

didn't come off today, but the rest of my beam was very good. I am happy

:12:20.:12:23.

but a little bit disappointed as well. That's your competition

:12:24.:12:28.

finished. Tellers how your first Olympics has gone? How happy are

:12:29.:12:33.

you? Mixed feelings, codification was difficult but I was proud of

:12:34.:12:38.

myself to be on the vault and that's why I'm in the final today, if I

:12:39.:12:42.

didn't fight then I wouldn't be here today. We didn't get the medal we

:12:43.:12:47.

were hoping for but it was still really good and today wasn't what I

:12:48.:12:52.

was hoping for a game but I'm only young, hopefully I have another

:12:53.:12:56.

Olympics in me and just looking forward to the future now. You and

:12:57.:13:02.

your family have brought something for your sister asked if she missed

:13:03.:13:06.

it on Monday, we won't need to buy one called Tokyo for you, you will

:13:07.:13:12.

be aiming for it already? I won't be giving up yet, I will go home, have

:13:13.:13:16.

a rest and get back in the gym macro training for next year. Thank you,

:13:17.:13:22.

goodbye. Thank you. What a well earned rest, but what an all-around

:13:23.:13:26.

competition it was. At one point Simone Biles was in second! It was

:13:27.:13:32.

quite surprising, wasn't it? Yes, it was and Mustafina had two strong

:13:33.:13:35.

pieces and fortunately didn't get the school she wanted which is what

:13:36.:13:41.

caused her to come third in the end -- she did not get the score she

:13:42.:13:45.

wanted. I'm confused with what happened with Mustafina on beam. She

:13:46.:13:50.

missed the first connection which they have to do, it's a set element.

:13:51.:13:55.

In qualification she had the same problem and on the second attempt

:13:56.:13:59.

that she tried it with the free walkover, in qualification she went

:14:00.:14:03.

for the free walk over and then put her hands down, so I don't think she

:14:04.:14:06.

wanted to make that same mistake again. The rest of the routine was

:14:07.:14:13.

nice. So it's a difficult decision, do you put that extra connection in

:14:14.:14:21.

and then missed the floor, or play safe? Was the right thing to do

:14:22.:14:24.

because in her mind do you think she was going for that silver, or do you

:14:25.:14:29.

think she knew Aly Raisman have this phenomenal floor? I think it's

:14:30.:14:34.

different, had she had a great beam she would have been going for the

:14:35.:14:39.

silver but once she had done beam she may have seen the scores and

:14:40.:14:42.

thought she could fight for the bronze because she looked quite

:14:43.:14:45.

dejected after beam but by the time she came out on the floor she had

:14:46.:14:48.

pulled herself together and knew she could fight for the bronze.

:14:49.:14:55.

The Americans finished the competition in real style. Aly

:14:56.:15:04.

Raisman set the bar as far as the expectation in the Rio Olympic arena

:15:05.:15:11.

was concerned. This tumble is incredible, a one and a half into a

:15:12.:15:15.

double Arabian and punches straightaway into the straight. Just

:15:16.:15:20.

the numbers they do, their precision, spatial awareness,

:15:21.:15:26.

landings, there is nothing for the judges to take off them. It set the

:15:27.:15:31.

boundaries for Simone Biles to come out afterwards. I watched her coach

:15:32.:15:37.

when she did this routine. He has worked so hard to get her fit to for

:15:38.:15:41.

these championships and when she landed the double pike he was

:15:42.:15:47.

jumping around everywhere. She was crying and he had tears in his eyes.

:15:48.:15:52.

It meant so much to them. She was just outside the medals last time.

:15:53.:15:58.

For years is a long time, a lot of effort goes into it and it has paid

:15:59.:16:05.

off, getting a silver medal. I could watch the floor routine of Simone

:16:06.:16:09.

Biles all day long. Talk us through this from a world champion's

:16:10.:16:17.

perspective. She loves performing. From the music starting she had the

:16:18.:16:24.

biggest smile on her face. How does she get that lift? ! I have no idea.

:16:25.:16:30.

She has far too much energy. She needs to share it out, to be honest!

:16:31.:16:37.

Her spatial awareness to do the second tumble with the half turn,

:16:38.:16:42.

straight into another jump. After she had done that it was like, OK, I

:16:43.:16:49.

have two more tumbles. This middle section, she is basically playing to

:16:50.:16:54.

the crowd, getting them involved. The smiles are there. She loves her

:16:55.:17:00.

gymnastics. She enjoys performing. Not just on the tumbles does she get

:17:01.:17:06.

the height, even on the jumps and the leaps, she gets height. For this

:17:07.:17:14.

tumble, double twist, double back. It is tough, anyway, and to get that

:17:15.:17:22.

height... I competed with that, my first tumble, having to save my

:17:23.:17:26.

energy for it and she does it in the middle. It shows how easy it is for

:17:27.:17:35.

her. Look at that! Again, plenty of time to have a look and see where

:17:36.:17:41.

she wants to put her feet. I'd love that finish. What a character. You

:17:42.:17:49.

can see the five gold medals glittering in her eyes. The

:17:50.:17:54.

appropriate leotard with the stars and stripes. Every single skill she

:17:55.:18:02.

does is textbook. Every coach will be looking out that saying, this is

:18:03.:18:09.

how we want you to perform it. Well, that just sums up what is to come

:18:10.:18:18.

here. Ten individual apparatus finals as far as men and women are

:18:19.:18:23.

concerned and we have great interest. We have the floor, beam

:18:24.:18:30.

finalists. Pommel horse finalists. This will be on Monday. Are we going

:18:31.:18:36.

to see the first ever Olympic champion for Great Britain in

:18:37.:18:41.

gymnastics? I hope so. Potentially we have a chance to create history.

:18:42.:18:48.

Wenger 's cross. We have a two pronged attack with Louis Smith and

:18:49.:18:52.

Max Whitlock. What will go one in the next few days as far as they are

:18:53.:18:56.

concerned? They will work on the routine. They will go for a harder

:18:57.:19:02.

routine. Making sure they get the extra element comfortable in

:19:03.:19:06.

training and then to go all out in the final. Join us on Monday to see

:19:07.:19:11.

what happens when they go all out. Let's keep everything crossed and

:19:12.:19:18.

hope for the first champion for Great Britain on pommel horse.

:19:19.:19:25.

Goodbye. We are still here. That was amazing. Incredible from Simone

:19:26.:19:30.

Biles and thanks for the texts and tweets. Justin says Simone Biles is

:19:31.:19:36.

the Queen. Another says what an amazing performance. Inspiration.

:19:37.:19:46.

Daisy says, wow. Marco says Simone Biles is fantastic. Congratulations

:19:47.:19:52.

to Simone Biles, the best gymnasts we will ever seen. That is probably

:19:53.:19:57.

up for discussion. We can show you more of her routine because it's

:19:58.:20:01.

worth recognising how good she has been. Since she became a senior

:20:02.:20:08.

gymnasts, let's look at the results. When she became a senior, second,

:20:09.:20:14.

first, second, first, first, first, first. First, first, first. First,

:20:15.:20:27.

first, first. Surprisingly, first, first, first, first. In her last 14

:20:28.:20:34.

all-around competitions she has finished top on every single

:20:35.:20:38.

occasion. That is why she is the best in the world. Two gold medals

:20:39.:20:44.

out of two. A lot of people watching are saying that is not the last gold

:20:45.:20:49.

medal we have seen from her at these Games or even across her career.

:20:50.:20:54.

Even if you are not particularly into the gymnastics, you have

:20:55.:20:58.

enjoyed watching one of the world's best this evening. Look at the

:20:59.:21:03.

photographers. These are the pictures you will watch and see on

:21:04.:21:08.

your TVs as newspapers tomorrow. Incredible. This floor routine, I

:21:09.:21:15.

will not joke with you, I do not know everything about gymnastics,

:21:16.:21:20.

but even I, as a Luddite, can look at this and say she is truly

:21:21.:21:26.

incredible. She is four foot eight. Her coach said yesterday she can

:21:27.:21:30.

learn in three days what it takes some people a year is to learn and

:21:31.:21:35.

that is other professional gymnasts. The final tumble, she is actually

:21:36.:21:40.

twice her own height off the floor before she lands it. I think we can

:21:41.:21:46.

see her getting her medal. We can go back to the Olympic arena. That is

:21:47.:21:54.

Simone Biles in the middle. About to receive the gold medal for team USA.

:21:55.:22:03.

They are already top of the medal table. Her coach said yesterday she

:22:04.:22:08.

is a pleasure to work with and she can learn so quickly what others

:22:09.:22:14.

take so long. Beth Tweddle said the beam is ten centimetres wide and on

:22:15.:22:19.

occasion she is performing tumbles off the beam that others perform on

:22:20.:22:24.

the floor. That is the extent to which she is better than some of

:22:25.:22:29.

those around her. The rest are top five, top ten in the world, and yet

:22:30.:22:33.

she is so far clear of others around her. She has finished well over 60

:22:34.:22:48.

points in the last five, taking gold medal on every occasion. She is the

:22:49.:22:54.

all-around champion. We can hear the national anthem of America. Ladies

:22:55.:23:01.

and gentlemen, the anthem of the United States of America.

:23:02.:23:14.

AMERICAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS. CHEERING.

:23:15.:24:27.

Simone Biles, Olympic champion in the women's individual all-around.

:24:28.:24:35.

Russia taking the bronze medal. And I will read from Matthew Pinsent,

:24:36.:24:40.

himself a four-time Olympic gold medallist. He says winning by

:24:41.:24:54.

country Biles! We have been on the gymnastics for quite some time. We

:24:55.:24:57.

can remind you what else has happened. These are the headlines.

:24:58.:25:08.

Silver medal for David Florence and Richard Hounslow, the same as they

:25:09.:25:14.

did in London in the canoe doubles. Also a silver medal for Katherine

:25:15.:25:20.

Grainger and Vicky Thornley in the double sculls. Hopefully they will

:25:21.:25:26.

join us later live on the beach. What a semifinal for Team GB's men.

:25:27.:25:33.

After beating South Africa we will see them take on Fiji at 11pm,

:25:34.:25:39.

probably on BBC One. We will keep you posted on that.

:25:40.:25:45.

Andy Murray is safely through to the quarters of the men's singles

:25:46.:25:51.

tennis. Johanna Konta is sadly out after losing to Angelique Kerber.

:25:52.:26:02.

GB women's team pursuit have set a new world record in qualifying for

:26:03.:26:10.

the semifinal. We are going straight to the boxing

:26:11.:26:16.

because Team GB Representative Pat McCormack, light welterweight, is in

:26:17.:26:24.

there. His first fight of the games. Taking on the boxer from Kazakhstan.

:26:25.:26:35.

Ablaikhan Zhussupov. This is the first round of preliminary action.

:26:36.:26:41.

The opening bout for these boxes. They have had a long wait to get

:26:42.:26:46.

their campaigns under way. The British representative who just

:26:47.:26:52.

landed a good left hook. Ranked 18th in the world, Pat McCormack. His

:26:53.:26:58.

opponent is an immensely talented 19-year-old, Ablaikhan Zhussupov of

:26:59.:27:02.

Kazakhstan. Not ranked in senior rankings but he brings a glittering

:27:03.:27:07.

set of credentials from the junior and youth ranks. Not a bad start for

:27:08.:27:18.

McCormack. He is against a Seung Ju -- a southpaw.

:27:19.:27:24.

It has been a good start for McCormack. Patient boxing from him.

:27:25.:27:30.

Against his opponent, he cannot afford to make mistakes. He is

:27:31.:27:35.

staying well balanced, patients. A good right hand. This is how he has

:27:36.:27:40.

to box in the first round. Plenty of thought in these forward forays from

:27:41.:27:51.

both boxers. McCormack just fell short. The reigning European

:27:52.:27:56.

Championship silver medallist coming away with second placed finish in

:27:57.:28:01.

the tournament in Bulgaria last summer.

:28:02.:28:05.

He qualified for this, his first Olympics. He gets tagged with a good

:28:06.:28:14.

southpaw left to the body by Ablaikhan Zhussupov, who qualified

:28:15.:28:19.

by coming first place in the global qualification event in June. A

:28:20.:28:24.

first-place finish in the Asian and O'Shea Arnie continental

:28:25.:28:32.

qualification event. A couple of choices when throwing the right

:28:33.:28:35.

hand, Pat McCormack, he has to get his Leeds leg into distance, find

:28:36.:28:42.

the rage, throw the shot, otherwise he falls short. Or he waits for his

:28:43.:28:46.

opponent come forward and close the gap. Bring him onto the shot as he

:28:47.:28:55.

comes forward. That was better. Ablaikhan Zhussupov made a mistake

:28:56.:28:59.

when he came forward and McCormack punished him. The left hook and when

:29:00.:29:06.

he got back into position, landing a right-hander. Suddenly, the boxing

:29:07.:29:10.

stance of Ablaikhan Zhussupov becoming dishevelled. A good

:29:11.:29:14.

conclusion to the round by the man in blue with Pat McCormack landing

:29:15.:29:18.

eye-catching punches at the end of the first round. A clever display

:29:19.:29:25.

from McCormack. We can listen to Dave Alloway. Maybe lead off a

:29:26.:29:35.

little bit more. Dave Alloway saying maybe lead off a

:29:36.:29:41.

little bit more, you are quicker than him. Dave Alloway wants him to

:29:42.:29:48.

beat him to the punch. He can lead off in the form of the feint. A good

:29:49.:29:58.

display from McCormack and he has got it, two scores to one. I agree

:29:59.:30:02.

with that. Round two. We move into the second

:30:03.:30:15.

round, a very good round of boxing in the opener, shaded by Pat

:30:16.:30:20.

McCormack. The man from Birtley boxing club, which is proving as be

:30:21.:30:25.

such a hotbed of talent for the GB squad at the English Institute of

:30:26.:30:29.

sport. His twin brother Luke started the programme, as is Cyrus

:30:30.:30:33.

Pattinson, an outstanding boxer at 69 kilograms he just missed out on

:30:34.:30:39.

an Olympic about it. Plenty more on what is becoming a conveyor belt

:30:40.:30:44.

from that club as well. All in the mix or on the cusp. Callum French

:30:45.:30:51.

another one. At crouching right hand, that was a wonderful lead

:30:52.:30:57.

right out of the Orthodox stands and the teenager was forced to retreat

:30:58.:31:04.

on unsteady legs. A super shot, playing it cool, McCormack but if

:31:05.:31:08.

you make a mistake he punishes you. Tremendous stuff, good boxing from

:31:09.:31:13.

McCormack but fast reactions. Mention a glittering career that

:31:14.:31:18.

Zhussupov has had at the junior and youth ranks, I was ringside to see

:31:19.:31:25.

him win his youth Olympic Games gold in 2014. That same year he took

:31:26.:31:28.

world youth championship gold, the year before that, world junior gold

:31:29.:31:35.

in Kiev. In the Ukraine. He has made a seamless transition through to

:31:36.:31:39.

senior boxing, but meeting a really accomplished operator here in the

:31:40.:31:43.

form of Pat McCormack and so far the man in blue is providing a puzzle

:31:44.:31:47.

that he's finding difficult to solve. Very good boxing so far from

:31:48.:31:53.

Pat McCormack. Excellent judgment of distance there from McCormack. He's

:31:54.:31:56.

edging in but he won't go over the front foot, because if he goes to

:31:57.:32:00.

close he will get caught but by moving forward the way he is an

:32:01.:32:04.

occasionally he is an occasionally he's making his opponents lead off

:32:05.:32:08.

and that's what he wants them to do. He's going forward and once

:32:09.:32:11.

Zhussupov to lead and he will come back with a counter. Clever boxing

:32:12.:32:15.

from McCormack, brilliant. Good right hand underneath from McCormack

:32:16.:32:19.

and a straight right hand to the body from the man in blue. Both

:32:20.:32:23.

these men part of the strongest boxing programmes in the world,

:32:24.:32:25.

that's the wonderful lead left hand by McCormack and getting to work

:32:26.:32:29.

with the right hand. Both men members of teams made up of

:32:30.:32:33.

identical compositions, a full condiment of men across all ten

:32:34.:32:37.

waits for both Kazakhstan and Great Britain and two women as well, good

:32:38.:32:41.

left-hand by McCormack before he pivoted off in the same direction.

:32:42.:32:49.

It's important he holds his ground and doesn't allow Zhussupov to push

:32:50.:32:55.

back. Finish on the left hook, and again, super punch, McCormack. Good

:32:56.:33:00.

boxing skills. Continuing to disrupt the attempted forward movement of

:33:01.:33:03.

Zhussupov is McCormack, that right-hand proving to be a

:33:04.:33:06.

particularly effective shot in that regard. There it is once again, the

:33:07.:33:11.

arcing variety and along left just before the bell. Another very good

:33:12.:33:17.

round and look at that, the Mackems on tour! The lead cheerleader behind

:33:18.:33:27.

that illustrative flag. Zhussupov coming forward but making mistakes.

:33:28.:33:30.

McCormack crashes that right-hand though. It's a clever display from

:33:31.:33:37.

the Birtley boxer. Because he is patient, he's bringing his opponent

:33:38.:33:41.

on to the punch and he is staying out of range. He gets caught there

:33:42.:33:46.

with a shot book would boxing skills, clever display. I'll be

:33:47.:33:50.

amazed if he hasn't won this. Across the board, there you go, rightly so,

:33:51.:33:55.

a perfect scoring for McCormack. As well as Richie Woodhall to my left

:33:56.:34:01.

we have the Olympic gold medallist, and Trophy winner from Italy,

:34:02.:34:04.

Patrice Oliver in front of us and he's liking what he's seeing from

:34:05.:34:11.

Pat McCormack. Round 3. Into the third and final round and Pat

:34:12.:34:15.

McCormack of Great Britain, the 18th ranked boxer in the world in a

:34:16.:34:18.

really commanding position. He's taken a second round across the

:34:19.:34:23.

board. He leads by two points on the court judges AMC, it's all square

:34:24.:34:27.

for Judge B after that observer gave the man in red the opening round --

:34:28.:34:33.

he leads by two points on the cards of judges a and C. Zhussupov needs a

:34:34.:34:41.

massive round to get back on terms. He needs to do something different,

:34:42.:34:46.

he has to up the tempo, his corner will have told him. He's a

:34:47.:34:49.

counterpuncher himself so he doesn't like going forward, the fellow in

:34:50.:34:54.

red, but he has done and will walk on Timor-Leste talks like that,

:34:55.:34:57.

again perfectly well timed shot from McCormack. A terrific display from

:34:58.:35:05.

Pat McCormack. These two boxers are so well skilled if you make the

:35:06.:35:07.

slightest mistake they punish you and that is what is happening here.

:35:08.:35:12.

Zhussupov is making the mistakes and its McCormack that is punishing him.

:35:13.:35:16.

Got through the good southpaw left a couple of moments ago, the same shot

:35:17.:35:21.

in evidence against Ron Zhussupov so McCormack will have to keep his wits

:35:22.:35:26.

about him here. He would love to do that to send a message to the rest

:35:27.:35:29.

of the light welterweight division, being very much a man in form has

:35:30.:35:33.

McCormack picking up the European Championships over last year. Lost a

:35:34.:35:39.

terrific content -- contest to Joe Cordina in the Commonwealth Games in

:35:40.:35:43.

the first preliminary round, a contest worthy and it was a

:35:44.:35:48.

right-hand success for McCormack and in World Series boxing for the

:35:49.:35:54.

British Lion Herts, with no vest, Pat McCormack was named the regular

:35:55.:35:59.

boxer of the regular season, so impressive were his displays. He

:36:00.:36:07.

made a mistake there, McCormack, coming forward. Missed with the

:36:08.:36:11.

right hand and walked onto the left. This contest is not over yet, just

:36:12.:36:15.

under a minute ago. He is winning it but he has to concentrate here. To

:36:16.:36:19.

get over the line. It's a good performance up to now, but he has to

:36:20.:36:24.

keep it going. He has to focus and concentrate, every second of every

:36:25.:36:29.

round, it is so important. We mentioned the underage success that

:36:30.:36:37.

Zhussupov has enjoyed. A good right hand from McCormack once again. Pat

:36:38.:36:39.

McCormack went over to Kazakhstan and came away with world junior gold

:36:40.:36:44.

in 2011 at 50 kilograms, that gives you an idea that this is an

:36:45.:36:47.

immensely talented individual. Graduated through to the senior

:36:48.:36:51.

ranks and what an impact he is making. Really impressive Olympic

:36:52.:36:54.

debut against a very published boxer. He has been composed, he has

:36:55.:37:00.

been controlled. These ten second clapper indicates he is on the cusp

:37:01.:37:04.

of going through to the second round of the 64 kilograms light

:37:05.:37:07.

welterweight tournament. There is the bell to conclude a terrific

:37:08.:37:14.

display from the man in blue. He led by two points for judges A and C,

:37:15.:37:19.

Callum French leading the cheers in the stands again but having

:37:20.:37:21.

progressed through we have to wait for initial confirmation of course,

:37:22.:37:25.

the 19-year-old Catholic boxer is disappointed but he has been beaten

:37:26.:37:30.

by an accomplished display from Pat McCormack but more about the second

:37:31.:37:35.

round at the moment. A fantastic display, look at that reverse 1-2,

:37:36.:37:40.

he follows through with a left hand. It was a clever and well disciplined

:37:41.:37:44.

display. I think that is the word, it was a disciplined display from

:37:45.:37:51.

McCormack. He stayed at range well, he he leads with the right hand and

:37:52.:37:55.

finishes with the left, he kept it going. He never came over his front

:37:56.:38:00.

foot. He boxed against a tricky southpaw but he didn't make mistakes

:38:01.:38:03.

and wasn't punished. McCormack stayed well balanced, a terrific

:38:04.:38:07.

performance. We had a great performance from Joshua Buatsi

:38:08.:38:09.

earlier today and that didn't equally because Buatsi knocked his

:38:10.:38:16.

opponent out but in many respects that was up there with it,

:38:17.:38:21.

tremendous stuff. Nice to see the handshake of respect between the two

:38:22.:38:25.

boxers. Let's get the official announcement. Ladies and gentlemen,

:38:26.:38:37.

the winner by a split decision... In the blue corner... Chery-macro Pat

:38:38.:38:50.

McCormack all smiles as he opens his Olympic campaign with a split

:38:51.:38:55.

decision victory over a really talented boxer from Kazakhstan, 2-1

:38:56.:39:01.

on the scorecards but it was a wonderfully impressive display,

:39:02.:39:04.

delight from the fans, the stands amongst the fans. That's how he did

:39:05.:39:09.

it, a 3-point margin of the advantage for judges A and C, a one

:39:10.:39:17.

point margin of advantage for Beat, but that McCormack are really

:39:18.:39:21.

impressive performance on it won't get any easier in the light weight

:39:22.:39:24.

well to tournament because waiting in the second round as the

:39:25.:39:29.

tournament number two seed and that is the Cuban, the tournament number

:39:30.:39:34.

two seed, former World Championship medallist and he is the man that

:39:35.:39:36.

awaits Pat McCormack after that terrific display.

:39:37.:39:43.

STUDIO: That shows you how things should

:39:44.:39:48.

work so Pat McCormack goes through and we will hopefully get reaction

:39:49.:39:53.

from him later. Still loads of texts and tweets for Simone Biles, we will

:39:54.:39:57.

hear from her as well, if you have just turned on your telly and you

:39:58.:40:01.

are watching back home now, Simone Biles is the new all-around Olympic

:40:02.:40:05.

champion and she was truly outstanding. We will get an

:40:06.:40:09.

interview with Simone Biles from gymnastics a little bit later as

:40:10.:40:13.

well. Let's show you exactly how things will pan out for the rest of

:40:14.:40:17.

the evening on BBC Four. We have some wonderful sport lined up for

:40:18.:40:20.

you including a bit of rugby sevens coming up very shortly. We will show

:40:21.:40:24.

you the bronze medal match between South Africa and Japan. Live on BBC

:40:25.:40:28.

at 11pm will be the gold medal match which we will seek Team GB take on

:40:29.:40:33.

Fiji. Fiji has not in their entire history won an Olympic medal, so

:40:34.:40:37.

they are guaranteed one, whether it's the silver or the gold, Team GB

:40:38.:40:44.

just squeezed past South Africa 7- -- 7-5, an amazing semifinal and the

:40:45.:40:48.

final should be cracking viewing as well. We will see Josh Kelly in the

:40:49.:40:52.

boxing ring at 11:15pm and plenty of badminton coming your way at 1130,

:40:53.:40:57.

including Chris and Gabby Adcock, probably Team GB's best bet for a

:40:58.:41:03.

medal and Kirsty Gilmour in the singles, and if you are watching

:41:04.:41:07.

last night we will show you the men's individual gold medal match in

:41:08.:41:11.

the table tennis. We saw the women's last night, we will see the men's at

:41:12.:41:19.

about 1:30pm -- at about 1:30am. On BBC One at the moment you can see

:41:20.:41:23.

the track cycling, it started today. The team pursuit, Team GB's women

:41:24.:41:26.

have broken the world record. The men's just missed out on the team

:41:27.:41:31.

pursuit world record in qualifying for the semifinal. The team pursuit

:41:32.:41:34.

codifying taking place now on BBC One. Over on the website and the app

:41:35.:41:43.

we have fencing for you. I'm sure many of you got into that the other

:41:44.:41:47.

day. A friend of mine said he was obsessed by fencing for at least 43

:41:48.:41:52.

minutes, when Richard Kruse was in action, live fencing on the Red

:41:53.:41:54.

Button and the sport app. Mentioning how many of you are

:41:55.:42:09.

talking about Simone Biles, it is getting windy down here on

:42:10.:42:12.

Copacabana. Gusts of around 55 miles an hour. If you see some paper

:42:13.:42:17.

disappearing, don't be perturbed! We have as much as we possibly can

:42:18.:42:21.

strapped down. Thankfully in the Rio Olympic Arena there was no wind in

:42:22.:42:23.

there because it was clearly covered over. Simone Biles in the same

:42:24.:42:30.

conditions for everybody else managed to produce some incredible

:42:31.:42:32.

performances to take the elliptic title in the all-around women's

:42:33.:42:40.

title -- the Olympic title. We saw yesterday Kohei Uchimura do it for

:42:41.:42:44.

the men, Simone Biles has dazzled us with her performance and we can hear

:42:45.:42:49.

from her now. Well, Simone, you are all smiles now

:42:50.:42:54.

but there were a few tears out there, as well, tell us what this

:42:55.:42:58.

all-around Olympic gold medal means to you? It means the world to me

:42:59.:43:01.

because I've been training so hard for this and even though I've been

:43:02.:43:05.

to World Championships I knew I had done it and to tonight I knew I had

:43:06.:43:10.

done it, but then I realised the importance of it and it got to me.

:43:11.:43:14.

People look at you once you make it look so easy but you do put a lot of

:43:15.:43:19.

work in, don't you? Yes, we do. We do have a day off tomorrow but then

:43:20.:43:24.

we go into training for individual events. Are you aware of how Biles

:43:25.:43:30.

mania is taking off because I know you have had tweets from Zac Efron

:43:31.:43:33.

and Taylor Smith, what it's been like for you? -- Taylor Swift. It's

:43:34.:43:42.

amazing, very cool. Will you be tweeting Zac Efron tonight? Only if

:43:43.:43:46.

he tweets me first. Thank you. Thank you. Are very happy Simone Biles,

:43:47.:43:51.

understandably. I promised we would get reaction from the boxing. Let's

:43:52.:43:56.

go back to the ring and hear from Mr McCormack, who was successful. What

:43:57.:44:02.

has he got to say for himself? A great fight, you dominated in the

:44:03.:44:07.

Olympic debut. Definitely, over the moon, I couldn't be more rugby. And

:44:08.:44:12.

through to the next round. What was the difference there? I saw a big

:44:13.:44:15.

right hand from you in the second round. Did you know you had it from

:44:16.:44:21.

there? I was catching big shots, I wasn't being caught with anything so

:44:22.:44:25.

I was buzzing. When you won that about the place here erupted. Why

:44:26.:44:30.

has your support come from? The atmosphere is unreal, I have my twin

:44:31.:44:35.

brother, Michael Mates, the full GB squad watching and supporting us.

:44:36.:44:39.

How much has it helps you question might over the moon, I can hear the

:44:40.:44:44.

voices come and shouting advice so that's good. The Cuban second seed

:44:45.:44:50.

next, how do you go about preparing for that? I will beat him again. I

:44:51.:44:54.

like boxing southpaws. He's one of the best in the world. I remember

:44:55.:44:58.

watching him at the last Olympics and thinking how good he was so I

:44:59.:45:02.

can't wait to get in there and beat him. All the best for the next

:45:03.:45:04.

round, see you soon. Off goes Pat McCormack. As

:45:05.:45:15.

promised... Stay there! We will do rugby sevens now. Team GB involved

:45:16.:45:25.

in a match against Fiji. Right now we will show you the bronze medal

:45:26.:45:31.

match between South Africa and Japan. We join it at kick-off and

:45:32.:45:35.

Sir Clive Woodward and Eddie Butler are your commentators.

:45:36.:45:46.

Can they now surprise one of the rugby world's giants. South Africa.

:45:47.:45:57.

Penalty advantage to South Africa. Their playmaker, Cecil Afrika gets

:45:58.:46:01.

through. A good off-load to Smith and Smith

:46:02.:46:18.

is away. John De Jong will score the first try of the semifinal. -- Juan

:46:19.:46:36.

de Jongh. An ominous start for South Africa. Very direct, very powerful.

:46:37.:46:40.

This came from Cecil Afrika with the clean break. Undoubtedly the

:46:41.:46:48.

strongest South African seven. It surprised me in a couple of games,

:46:49.:46:56.

including against Team GB when the coach takes everybody off. A good

:46:57.:47:03.

start by South Africa. This is a big game. Coming forth, there is nothing

:47:04.:47:19.

worse in the Olympic Games. I would be surprised if this seven do not

:47:20.:47:23.

stay longer than we have seen so far. Ten minutes each way in the

:47:24.:47:29.

final, as opposed to seven at every other stage.

:47:30.:47:41.

Lomano Lemeki. One of their playmakers. Goya. Japan have the

:47:42.:47:49.

put-in. Juan de Jongh and Rosko Specman. Not

:47:50.:48:17.

big players. But they were very physical side, South Africa. The

:48:18.:48:26.

backs, Juan de Jongh and Rosko Specman, causing a lot of trouble.

:48:27.:48:42.

-- Roscko Speckman. That is a big loss, the Jack -- Japan leading try

:48:43.:48:52.

scorer. A big loss to the Japanese team so

:48:53.:48:56.

Goya feeds, and quickly. Goya makes a few yards but this is a

:48:57.:49:24.

slowly -- slow-release for Japan. Speckman clear and a second try for

:49:25.:49:29.

South Africa. Japan have lost their playmaker and they are down by two

:49:30.:49:34.

drives. South Africa looking formidable. Speckman on a street.

:49:35.:49:44.

Wonderful footwork. Disappointing for Japan. Little chance when you

:49:45.:49:53.

have this fellow running down. A wonderful player. Cecil Afrika with

:49:54.:49:58.

the conversion, it should be a formality. South Africa will be

:49:59.:50:04.

disappointed, having played against Team GB. Surprised he did not keep

:50:05.:50:09.

his seven on longer. Played into the hands of the British men. So far,

:50:10.:50:14.

Japan have not really touched the ball, four minutes into the game.

:50:15.:50:26.

Cecil Afrika adding the simple conversion.

:50:27.:50:39.

Sending it towards Lomano Lemeki. A high tackle.

:50:40.:50:51.

Another penalty advantage. This is the captain.

:50:52.:51:15.

Another penalty advantage. Japan have a real chance.

:51:16.:51:28.

Great Britain when two dries up against Japan and then beat them by

:51:29.:51:35.

only two points. They will play and play. Their fitness levels are high.

:51:36.:51:43.

-- tries. South Africa just dropping off. Hope you get is not one game

:51:44.:51:49.

too far, the Japanese. A simple knock-on. Giving the ball

:51:50.:52:00.

to this very talented South African seven. Cecil Afrika in his preferred

:52:01.:52:11.

position. A sudden change of direction with Juan de Jongh outside

:52:12.:52:15.

him. Penalty to South Africa, this time.

:52:16.:52:26.

High tackle. Some of these high tackles...

:52:27.:52:32.

I really don't think that is... I am disappointed with this. They have

:52:33.:52:42.

been given strict rules but we are playing the same rules as 15 aside,

:52:43.:52:51.

and that would not have been given in 15 aside. I disagree with that

:52:52.:53:03.

decision. Speckman has had a great start, throwing the ball in here. Up

:53:04.:53:14.

goes Smith. It has gone a little wild. There is a strong wind. South

:53:15.:53:21.

Africa are playing into it. Japan with the kick, the penalty at the

:53:22.:53:28.

breakdown. A rare error by South Africa. They do compete so

:53:29.:53:34.

aggressively for the ball, when it goes to the floor after the tackle.

:53:35.:53:39.

Interesting, the Japanese in the last line-out, they did not seem to

:53:40.:53:44.

compete when the South Africans threw in the ball, which I hate to

:53:45.:53:50.

see. At this level you have every chance, in the abbreviated game, in

:53:51.:53:51.

completing the line-out. It will be Goya to throw in. Let's

:53:52.:54:18.

see the South Africans compete on the Japanese throw. They didn't! Won

:54:19.:54:27.

by Japan. Away comes Lomano Lemeki. A penalty advantage. A good angle.

:54:28.:54:41.

Kuwazuru scores Japan's first try. I am pleased to for Japan. Scoring

:54:42.:54:53.

absolutely brilliant, Kuwazuru. You have to go back to the line-out and

:54:54.:54:59.

South Africa did not compete. You have to compete in every part of the

:55:00.:55:03.

game. 30-year-old Kuwazuru, captain of Japan. How proud he must be the

:55:04.:55:10.

way his team have come to this Olympic Games. I am pleased for

:55:11.:55:17.

Japan. It would be great to see Japan do something special in this

:55:18.:55:20.

game. They have done amazingly well so far.

:55:21.:55:36.

Goya with the extra two. I would love the competition to

:55:37.:55:43.

restart. Lomano Lemeki, the Japanese playmaker has kicked well. Let's see

:55:44.:55:49.

if he can get onto the ball and win the ball back for Japan. The clock

:55:50.:55:57.

paused while Kuwazuru sorts out his boots.

:55:58.:56:08.

Dylan Sage. First chance, over half way. Players across the park for

:56:09.:56:34.

South Africa, including Speckman?. What a beautiful sight. Cecil Afrika

:56:35.:56:41.

adjusts sprinting onto that ball. Putting a beautiful pass into it.

:56:42.:56:54.

The Japanese do really well. Look at the speed of the ball coming back.

:56:55.:57:01.

This is what I love, forward, two hands. Textbook. Specman?,

:57:02.:57:09.

beautiful. A great conversion by Cecil Afrika.

:57:10.:57:33.

The half-time whistle has gone and a commanding lead for South Africa.

:57:34.:57:43.

Interesting watching these teams. Every team has a good starting

:57:44.:57:48.

seven, especially Team GB. We started our last three games with

:57:49.:57:52.

the same seven which is proving dividends. We seem to be better

:57:53.:58:00.

keeping the start team on the field. South Africa make a lot of changes

:58:01.:58:02.

and it has cost them. Specman, a beautiful pass. South

:58:03.:59:04.

Africa, 21-7 up. They look pretty pumped in the huddle. Keep your same

:59:05.:59:11.

team on, Coach Powell. They are the same for the moment. I

:59:12.:59:34.

wonder if they slightly underestimated Team GB this morning.

:59:35.:59:38.

It was a big mistake because it is a very talented British team. Put

:59:39.:59:44.

together by Simon Amor. I cannot wait to see them have a crack at

:59:45.:59:50.

Fiji in a few minutes. Cecil Afrika, downwind.

:59:51.:00:00.

And even cleaner break now, Kazuhiro Goya, Dylan Sage in hot pursuit but

:00:01.:00:14.

Goya scores for Japan. The South African As underestimated Japan in

:00:15.:00:18.

the first half. They won't now. Wow what a great try by Goya. This last

:00:19.:00:23.

week they have been amazing and Japan doing so, so well. He did

:00:24.:00:36.

really well, and this is brilliant. How good is this for Japanese rugby,

:00:37.:00:42.

knowing the next Olympic Games is in Japan and will be seen -- and we

:00:43.:00:49.

will see the seventh reach a new level and the next Championships is

:00:50.:00:55.

in Japan so to see them beating big teams like New Zealand, scoring

:00:56.:00:58.

tries like that against South Africa is wonderful to see. Game on, seven

:00:59.:01:02.

points and eight minutes to go. Nine minutes to go nearly. Will settle

:01:03.:01:10.

for eight and a half. One converted try separate the teams. South

:01:11.:01:13.

African captain Kyle Brown collects. Dylan Sage, back to Cecil Afrika,

:01:14.:01:25.

who lets Philippus Snyman take it. An excellent tackle by Yusaku

:01:26.:01:37.

Kuwazuru. Cheslin Kolbe is on, there is a change. Cecil Afrika clean

:01:38.:01:40.

through the middle and strolled it in.

:01:41.:01:49.

It say let's get on with it game. He's not a big man but his power is

:01:50.:01:58.

fantastic. What an athlete, what a credit to the Olympic Games. This

:01:59.:02:05.

guy can walk around the Olympic Village and compare himself with any

:02:06.:02:08.

athlete in any sport, just fantastic to watch. They needed that, Japan

:02:09.:02:17.

just coming back into the game. It puts them two clear scores ahead.

:02:18.:02:26.

South Africa 28, Japan half that number. I think this may belong to

:02:27.:02:34.

you, Cecil. You talk about the Olympic spirit and it is therein

:02:35.:02:37.

sport, I hope it's always there, it's certainly there in the rugby

:02:38.:02:41.

sevens, there's been hardly any incidents throughout the six days.

:02:42.:02:51.

Don't say that! There hasn't. Japan watch it bounce, I think they

:02:52.:02:54.

thought it was going out on the full. As it is, it will be a

:02:55.:03:01.

Japanese throw-in. There will be disappointed with that, let the ball

:03:02.:03:04.

land and then go out was a big error.

:03:05.:03:20.

Won by Soejima. It's gone forward. The South African doesn't play any

:03:21.:03:34.

less powerfully. What a wonderful sight this is on the screen, seeing

:03:35.:03:39.

these tremendous athletes at full tilt. Katsuyuki Sakai to feed the

:03:40.:03:49.

scrum. Those posts are not far away, they have a long distance to travel.

:03:50.:03:55.

Sakai held up by Cecil Afrika and then planted on the ground.

:03:56.:04:04.

Excellent pass, what a pass to Walker. From Hano.

:04:05.:04:16.

That's excellent wrestling work from Justin Geduld, he's won it back for

:04:17.:04:24.

South Africa and he's away again. Cecil Afrika. No sooner had Japan

:04:25.:04:32.

got themselves back into the game, then they see it go well away from

:04:33.:04:39.

them. Two tries by Cecil Afrika, South Africa over 30. You see the

:04:40.:04:48.

gap, it Speckman who is so good over the ball, the Japanese, that is why

:04:49.:04:54.

Cecil Afrika is so good he sees the space all the time and knows exactly

:04:55.:05:00.

what's going on there. I think it's amazing how they took this player

:05:01.:05:04.

off against Team GB, you see him play now and it's complete

:05:05.:05:09.

domination of the game with Speckman and putting the game out of sight

:05:10.:05:13.

with just four and a half minutes to go. What a kick. Brilliance by Cecil

:05:14.:05:18.

Afrika. Five tries, five conversions.

:05:19.:05:27.

Now you can load your bench, the game is won. The bronze medal is

:05:28.:05:36.

won. The bronze medal is one. Not definitively. That's better by

:05:37.:05:47.

Japan. Yusaku Kuwazuru saw him. That must have been high again on Kenki

:05:48.:05:52.

Fukuoka by Kwagga Smith. Japan work it across the field

:05:53.:06:10.

beyond the hands of Soejima. They have another penalty. The referee

:06:11.:06:19.

helping them out now. I don't think there was much in that contact.

:06:20.:06:27.

Right on halfway and Lemeki has come away again. Cecil Afrika outside

:06:28.:06:34.

him, try number six. A wonderful try. Cecil Afrika. A

:06:35.:06:58.

little bit forward, but the game is over here. South Africa are worthy

:06:59.:07:07.

of the bronze medal. Winners, ultimately they'll be disappointed

:07:08.:07:11.

not to be playing for the gold medal in a few minutes' time. Japan have

:07:12.:07:19.

to take great credit. For the last three days they've been tense seed

:07:20.:07:24.

and to make the last four is fantastic. -- tenth seed. Amazing

:07:25.:07:35.

how many kicks have hit the posts in the last three days. A change of

:07:36.:07:46.

kicker, Justin Geduld takes it because Cecil Afrika is off for a

:07:47.:07:54.

breather. What have Japan got left? It's been a long, hard final for

:07:55.:07:59.

them. That's an excellent pass out of the tackle although they couldn't

:08:00.:08:05.

quite get a pass off Soejima, not 11 that went backwards anyway. A

:08:06.:08:12.

straight sprint up the patch for Roscko Speckman, a hat-trick of

:08:13.:08:18.

tries for him. It's been a game too far for Japan. They have contributed

:08:19.:08:23.

hugely to this tournament, the best ever seven aside tournament but

:08:24.:08:29.

they've been taken apart by Speckman, Cecil Afrika. Again, I

:08:30.:08:35.

love seeing these guys run. Disappointing quarterfinal, you want

:08:36.:08:42.

close games. This match isn't. South Africa have been excellent but this

:08:43.:08:46.

has been a game too far for Japan. Justin Geduld adds the extra two two

:08:47.:08:56.

spec man's third try. -- Roscko Speckman. Is being the excellence of

:08:57.:09:04.

South Africa, I don't want to be harsh on Japan, the excellence

:09:05.:09:06.

especially of Cecil Afrika has been outstanding. You know, the number

:09:07.:09:12.

two team coming into the tournament and they are showing why. But they

:09:13.:09:17.

are playing for third place. Dylan Sage, back on. The hat-trick hero of

:09:18.:09:23.

the final, Roscko Speckman. Position for Goto. So close by

:09:24.:09:44.

Cheslin Kolbe. It might have been a try to go beyond 50. Have we seen 50

:09:45.:09:55.

in a game? We have once, haven't we? I don't know the answer! I don't

:09:56.:09:59.

think we have, I can't recall. That is so unlike Japan, they have

:10:00.:10:15.

been a little bit loose. Penalty to South Africa. They have one chance

:10:16.:10:24.

to hit the 50 mark. Deliberate knock-on by Teruya Goto. The French

:10:25.:10:32.

referee, just to make a long, hard final even more miserable. Sometimes

:10:33.:10:39.

a bit of sympathy from the referee, I don't think the spirit of what has

:10:40.:10:44.

been a great tournament, that that was necessary.

:10:45.:10:52.

Where is the gap? He can make them go wide, surely there must have an

:10:53.:11:03.

overlap somewhere. They do, it's Cheslin Kolbe and it's a

:11:04.:11:06.

half-century of points for South Africa. He's doing his best to make

:11:07.:11:15.

the conversion easier. Very impressive South Africa, well done,

:11:16.:11:18.

a little bit disappointing to be honest as the quarterfinal. You

:11:19.:11:22.

really want tight games and I promise you this next game, the

:11:23.:11:26.

final for the gold medal, will be a tight, close game. Cheslin Kolbe, a

:11:27.:11:34.

little bit of trickery to the very end, a little bit of deception.

:11:35.:11:40.

Justin Geduld, the very last act of this bronze medal final.

:11:41.:11:47.

52, or 54, 54 it is. The final whistle is blown by the referee and

:11:48.:11:58.

there is a somewhat muted celebrations by South Africa, so

:11:59.:12:00.

comprehensive has been their performance. Japan 14, South Africa

:12:01.:12:05.

54. Welcome back to a rather windy

:12:06.:12:15.

Copacabana on BBC Four. South Africa have won the bronze medal in the

:12:16.:12:18.

rugby sevens, beating Japan who I suppose provided the upset of the

:12:19.:12:22.

tournament back on day one, when they managed to see off New Zealand.

:12:23.:12:27.

South Africa take the bronze. The gold medal match is over on BBC One

:12:28.:12:31.

right now if you'd like to watch that, see if Team GB can get the

:12:32.:12:35.

better Fiji, who will win their first ever ever Olympic medal but

:12:36.:12:39.

will it be silver or gold? We will go elsewhere, to the National Tennis

:12:40.:12:42.

Center and bring you some live tennis once again. Andy Murray was

:12:43.:12:48.

in earlier -- in action earlier on, we showed him winning, seeing off

:12:49.:12:52.

Fabio Fognini and deciding set despite being a breakdown at one

:12:53.:12:56.

point. He hasn't had much of a rest, he is back on court with the mixed

:12:57.:13:00.

doubles alongside Heather Watson. They are taking on the Spanish pair

:13:01.:13:05.

of Carla Suarez Navarro on David Ferrer. We will join after Team GB

:13:06.:13:08.

are a setup, we will go back to Centre Court and your commentator is

:13:09.:13:17.

Simon Reed. Commentator macro three games all

:13:18.:13:24.

here, we have had four successive breaks of serve, two against the

:13:25.:13:31.

women, two against the guys. Andy Murray has just been broken, it is

:13:32.:13:36.

three games each, the first set was 6-3. Murray and Watson looking good.

:13:37.:13:44.

That good. They got into the draw because of the withdrawal of Monica

:13:45.:13:54.

Niculescu and the other Romanian, they got the chance, delight for

:13:55.:13:59.

both of them. So far, they are taking advantage.

:14:00.:14:09.

Ferrer had a disappointing singles when he lost in the second round.

:14:10.:14:23.

They are beginning to play really well in this second set.

:14:24.:14:32.

They have been onto the Soares Navarro serve consistently, have

:14:33.:14:42.

Watson and Murray. Watson finishing off there, good return from Murray.

:14:43.:14:47.

They have a chance to break again, 30-30.

:14:48.:15:17.

After the pressure she is under, this will feel like a break of serve

:15:18.:15:32.

if Carla can hold here. A bit of a brain freeze from Soares

:15:33.:15:57.

Navarro. -- Both of them got through to the

:15:58.:16:45.

Mixed Doubles draw on a single seeding.

:16:46.:16:57.

Murray rang two, Heather, 66. Which is why they had to wait for a

:16:58.:17:05.

withdrawal before they got their place. But eventually it came. Some

:17:06.:17:11.

powering home there. Murray knew what she was going to do

:17:12.:17:30.

and they have break point on her serve again.

:17:31.:18:00.

And there is the break. They have had five successive breaks of serve.

:18:01.:18:10.

Heather Watson's serve coming up is absolutely crucial. That is the

:18:11.:18:22.

British contingent. Over on Court number four, Jamie Murray is playing

:18:23.:18:26.

with Johanna Konta. She lost early today. That was in the match against

:18:27.:18:33.

Angelique Kerber. Quickly out in Mixed Doubles. It looks like they

:18:34.:18:39.

will be quickly out of the match. They trailed by a set in the second

:18:40.:18:47.

set. Jamie Wilby out. Remember, he and Andy lost early on to the

:18:48.:18:50.

Brazilians in the Men's Doubles. The pressure is on Heather. If she

:18:51.:19:01.

can hold here, they are very nearly through.

:19:02.:19:11.

Still very breezy. Not as windy as earlier on when Andy Murray played

:19:12.:19:26.

against Fognini. But still, pretty brisk.

:19:27.:19:39.

This, of course, her first mixed match since she won at Wimbledon.

:19:40.:20:00.

Wonderful for her. What a bonus this is.

:20:01.:20:14.

Great serve. No one enjoyed it more than Andy Murray.

:20:15.:21:25.

Really well played. Another terrific serve and backed it up well.

:21:26.:21:40.

Heather Watson and Andy Murray, they were unsure whether they would be in

:21:41.:21:50.

this Mixed Doubles and now one gave away from the second round. The

:21:51.:21:56.

second round in Mixed Doubles is the quarterfinal.

:21:57.:22:30.

Andy Murray racing in after his return.

:22:31.:22:59.

Close, but I think it did miss, and so does he.

:23:00.:23:31.

UMPIRE: The ball was good, replay the point. That is tough on the

:23:32.:23:39.

Spaniards. It was called out, overruled. Not challenged.

:23:40.:24:16.

Andy Murray was quickly in. A fine return from Watson.

:24:17.:24:26.

Murray was so alert, sniffing the chance. And this is match point.

:24:27.:24:33.

O! Some way to finish. What a day it has been for Andy Murray with a

:24:34.:24:46.

considerable win against Fognini and now he and Heather Watson are

:24:47.:24:49.

through to the quarterfinals of the Mixed Doubles. A terrific scrap.

:24:50.:24:59.

Look at the smile on Heather's face. They may have been late entries, but

:25:00.:25:07.

they could be important entries in the Mixed Doubles. Just an hour and

:25:08.:25:16.

six minutes it took. A number of breaks in the second set, but Watson

:25:17.:25:23.

and Murray are through. 6-3, 6-3. STUDIO: A great win in the

:25:24.:25:30.

Mixed Doubles. Earlier, we promised you boxing. Josh Kelly is involved

:25:31.:25:36.

in his second-round fight in the welterweight division. Let's go back

:25:37.:25:40.

and pick up with the commentary team of Richie Woodhall and big Ron

:25:41.:25:52.

McIntosh. We are in the 69

:25:53.:25:53.

kilograms welterweight division and this bout is between boxers from

:25:54.:26:02.

Great Britain and Kazakhstan. The man wearing red is Joshua Kelly, 22,

:26:03.:26:07.

from Sunderland, competing in his first Olympic Games. This is his

:26:08.:26:14.

second contest. His opponent is the number-1 ranked boxer the world. A

:26:15.:26:16.

hugely accomplished boxer. This is a

:26:17.:26:40.

slightly different type of southpaw. A little busier. The world number

:26:41.:26:53.

one. Poke some props in that jab. Mr Kelly cannot afford to make any

:26:54.:27:02.

mistakes. If he falls short is, he will catch him.

:27:03.:27:23.

He found his range immediately, despite having a lengthy wait to get

:27:24.:27:30.

his second Olympic campaign under way. Both boxers want each other to

:27:31.:27:47.

lead first. That was better from Daniyar Yeleussinov. Josh Kelly has

:27:48.:27:52.

fast feats. He has to work harder, throw some more shots, maybe lead

:27:53.:28:00.

off with the jab. Terrific use at the seat by Yeleussinov. Firing off

:28:01.:28:12.

punches of his own. Kelly was adept to evade many of them. A cracking

:28:13.:28:17.

right hand and Kelly forced a touchdown. That was a terrific right

:28:18.:28:23.

hand out of his southpaw stance. Kelly came back with a right hand of

:28:24.:28:28.

his own. Unfortunate not to have been given a count. The momentum

:28:29.:28:33.

took him down. He was on the front foot going forward.

:28:34.:28:40.

Kelly has to do more. We has to lead off a little bit more, faster,

:28:41.:28:49.

sharper. He will have to up the pace, Kelly. A very good round of

:28:50.:28:56.

boxing in the opening bout of Rio 2016. By Yeleussinov. Let's listen

:28:57.:29:09.

in. Relax yourself and trigger him off, will stop trigger him off,

:29:10.:29:10.

exactly. He wants the feint. Yeleussinov beating Kelly to

:29:11.:29:25.

the punch. That was not too bad. 10-9 across the board in favour of

:29:26.:29:43.

Yeleussinov. The number one in the world.

:29:44.:29:48.

Into the second round we go. It's a wrap rapid start by Daniyar

:29:49.:29:57.

Yeleussinov, who has helped himself to the most basic combination of the

:29:58.:30:04.

book, a 1- to out of the southpaw stance, and another moments after.

:30:05.:30:09.

He's going to be busy, busy, should I say, Kelly. You heard Dave Alloway

:30:10.:30:13.

sacred hymn off, so he wants the feint, he wants to try out to draw

:30:14.:30:19.

the lead of his opponent and go back with the fast counter, if not beat

:30:20.:30:22.

him to the punch. You mention the fact this is the second Olympic

:30:23.:30:27.

tournament for Danny Lai Yeleussinov, he was a

:30:28.:30:31.

quarterfinalist at 64 kilograms four years ago. The lead legs come

:30:32.:30:36.

tantalisingly close together. He lost to the opponent who took

:30:37.:30:40.

Olympic bronze and he followed a year later with World Championship

:30:41.:30:43.

gold in his homeland of Kazakhstan. A good left hand once again from

:30:44.:30:48.

Yeleussinov. A silver medallist from the most recent edition of the World

:30:49.:30:53.

Championships. A tangle on the inside, reflected just how dominant

:30:54.:30:59.

Yeleussinov has been. He has been the male elite boxer of the year in

:31:00.:31:03.

recent years twice, 2013 and 2014. He really is one of the very best in

:31:04.:31:09.

the business. A good left hand to the body from Kelly. But that gives

:31:10.:31:14.

you an idea of the size of the task in front of Josh Kelly, ranked

:31:15.:31:17.

number seven in the world, and he has to try to get itself back into

:31:18.:31:21.

this contest after conceding the opening round unanimously. He has to

:31:22.:31:31.

do a bit of work, Kelly, and at close quarters he has defined the

:31:32.:31:35.

room and the space. Yeleussinov is well 11 as you can see why. Very

:31:36.:31:40.

clever on the outside, working away with the jab. Fast with the counter

:31:41.:31:44.

also. Just stays a range, plans his attack and waits for you to come

:31:45.:31:49.

into punching range and then he will beat you to the punch. Occasionally

:31:50.:31:55.

this Counterattack. Just as you were about to throw a shot he beats you

:31:56.:32:03.

to it. He has fast reactions. He's a good kid, this fellow in blue. But

:32:04.:32:10.

this is the Olympics. This is the biggest stage of all for Kelly. He

:32:11.:32:13.

has to produce the performance of his career here.

:32:14.:32:21.

Ustinov looking to progress to the quarterfinals for the second time in

:32:22.:32:24.

his Olympic career. Wonderful right jab from Yeleussinov, stopped Kelly

:32:25.:32:30.

in his tracks. Kelly has to reset, regroup, and come again, but again

:32:31.:32:35.

he is made to pay a heavy price, a sharp right left combination

:32:36.:32:39.

knocking the man from Britain off-balance. He does his good and

:32:40.:32:44.

better work at mid range, Yeleussinov and when they come

:32:45.:32:47.

together, he holds on. It's a good round again, I think from the

:32:48.:32:52.

Cadillac boxer. That's why he raised his right hand and that's why

:32:53.:32:55.

there's the distinctive Kazakhstan flag being raised in celebration in

:32:56.:32:59.

the stands. A terrific round of boxing. From the number two seed.

:33:00.:33:08.

Fairly comfortable there, the pace has suited up. That's a long left

:33:09.:33:14.

hook from Kelly. That wasn't too bad at all, but we need more of them.

:33:15.:33:19.

Yeleussinov is more direct with his work, a great 1-2. Kelly comes back

:33:20.:33:24.

again with a shot but gets caught in at close quarters, look at

:33:25.:33:29.

Yeleussinov here with the laid-back just to ride the punch, take the

:33:30.:33:34.

power away. Again, Yeleussinov takes all the scores. So now, Kelly needs

:33:35.:33:38.

a 10-8 round across the board. He needs to put his man down, probably

:33:39.:33:43.

to knock him out to get the win here to be honest. Round 3. Going into

:33:44.:33:53.

the third and final round, the status of the scorecards means Josh

:33:54.:33:56.

Kelly needs a huge round or perhaps the punch of a lifetime, because he

:33:57.:34:01.

has conceded the opening two rounds unanimously against the number-1

:34:02.:34:05.

ranked boxer in the world, the reigning World Championship silver

:34:06.:34:08.

medallist, the man who took World Championship gold in 2013. So it's a

:34:09.:34:15.

two point margin of advantage for all three judges in favour of the

:34:16.:34:20.

man in blue. So Kelly has to pull something out of the bag here.

:34:21.:34:28.

Kelly is so talented. Qualifying for this, his first Olympic appearance,

:34:29.:34:34.

the world qualification event in Baku. His mouthpiece has come out so

:34:35.:34:39.

that will be rinsed and replaced. It's why Yeleussinov has retreated

:34:40.:34:44.

to the neutral corner. Yeleussinov clever there, you don't want the

:34:45.:34:48.

inside. Just holding on the blindside of the referee,

:34:49.:34:52.

experienced man indeed. He couldn't get his left arm free to work

:34:53.:34:53.

because of that. Good bright- left combination and

:34:54.:35:05.

Kelly is discombobulated once again, knocked off balance. As to resume

:35:06.:35:10.

his boxing stands and that left hand out of the southpaw stance has been

:35:11.:35:13.

a really profitable punch for Dan Li la Ustinov. -- Daniyar Yeleussinov.

:35:14.:35:23.

He has a fistful of domestic titles as well. Oh, my goodness, that is

:35:24.:35:31.

naughty from Yeleussinov. But it's Kelly who gets the ticking off for

:35:32.:35:36.

turning his back on his opponent. He is made to miss considerably here as

:35:37.:35:39.

he launches a speculative shot, Kelly. Now he needs a knockout

:35:40.:35:44.

punch. He has defined it in the second half of this round. He needs

:35:45.:35:49.

to pick himself up, Kelly, I think he is feeling the pace a bit as

:35:50.:35:53.

well. The zip has gone out of his work. It has with both of them, to

:35:54.:36:00.

be quite honest. From Kelly that's a bit better but he has defined a big

:36:01.:36:03.

shot, he has to plant his feet and whip one over, try to hit the

:36:04.:36:06.

target. It's difficult, Yeleussinov very clever on the back foot,

:36:07.:36:11.

difficult to land a clean power shot on this opponent. Most certainly,

:36:12.:36:16.

it's been such an arduous qualification routes through to this

:36:17.:36:20.

Olympic Games for Joshua Kelly, suffered a hand injury after the

:36:21.:36:22.

World Championships last year and while rehab from that injury was

:36:23.:36:31.

living the life of a regularly young man, out on the town with his

:36:32.:36:35.

friends, he had to work hard to get his weight back in check, there's a

:36:36.:36:39.

good left hand from Kelly, and here he is at the Olympic Games and the

:36:40.:36:43.

look of the draw, he has drawn a real threat for Olympic gold in the

:36:44.:36:47.

second round of this Olympic tournament after a terrific run in

:36:48.:36:50.

the first round against the Egyptian.

:36:51.:36:57.

Desperately trying to find that shot, with every punch. Back into

:36:58.:37:08.

the breach once more, good right hand on the bell but the punch

:37:09.:37:11.

resistance of Yeleussinov proving sturdy. And over in the red corner,

:37:12.:37:19.

well, experienced operators in Garry Hay land Day Valley Way, Josh Kelly

:37:20.:37:24.

will know he has been bested. By the number one ranked boxer in the

:37:25.:37:28.

world. But what an experience. He completed right up and all the final

:37:29.:37:31.

bell in pursuit of the knockout punch. Absolutely, you can't fault

:37:32.:37:36.

him for the effort he put in in the last round. He really went for it,

:37:37.:37:41.

caught Yeleussinov with some good shots, some good work, with this

:37:42.:37:45.

tricky Kazakhstan boxer. He was clever, a bit of lip service there

:37:46.:37:53.

from Josh Kelly. But Yeleussinov, lovely right up there. He gave it

:37:54.:38:02.

everything, Josh Kelly. Ladies and gentlemen, the winner by unanimous

:38:03.:38:17.

decision... In the blue corner... CHEERING

:38:18.:38:25.

The Kazakhstan supporters are absolutely delighted, because one of

:38:26.:38:30.

their strong contenders for Olympic gold, Daniyar Yeleussinov, the

:38:31.:38:32.

number one ranked boxer in the world, the tournament number two

:38:33.:38:36.

seed, has progressed through to the quarterfinals at the expense of

:38:37.:38:40.

Great Britain's Joshua Kelly, than -- the young man from Sunderland

:38:41.:38:44.

gave it absolutely amazing. He ran up against a man who hit the ground

:38:45.:38:50.

running and in his first rounding -- in his first outing in Rio in 2016

:38:51.:38:55.

but he has lost all three rounds from all three judges, 10-9 in each

:38:56.:38:57.

of those rounds, Josh Kelly. It was a bruising battle. What did

:38:58.:39:08.

you make of your performance? I enjoyed it, I performed better than

:39:09.:39:15.

I did the other day. I gave everything I could, that's all I can

:39:16.:39:19.

do. I have done everyone proud, hopefully. I can see you are still

:39:20.:39:25.

gasping for breath now, you left it all in the ring. It was a technical

:39:26.:39:31.

fight, you have to be switched on. It was a good fight, I can't

:39:32.:39:37.

complain. I have an won at the end of the day. What will you take away

:39:38.:39:40.

from this Olympic experience? Experience. Coming out and boxing in

:39:41.:39:46.

front of a crowd and stuff. The support has been amazing back home

:39:47.:39:50.

from everyone. Just like being with -- dealing with the pressure and

:39:51.:39:56.

stuff. I felt comfortable. What is next? I don't know, we will see what

:39:57.:40:03.

comes, see what happens. But hopefully I'll keep enjoying the

:40:04.:40:07.

sport and keep progressing keep going. Will we see you in Tokyo in

:40:08.:40:13.

2020? You never know, I will have turned 22 so plenty of time. You

:40:14.:40:17.

never know. All the best, Josh. Cheers.

They are brilliant reminders, aren't they, of how hard our athletes work

that, good success on the cycling for the team sprinters as well, we

:42:08.:42:20.

will bring you the headlines later on. In the wee small hours of the

:42:21.:42:23.

morning in the UK, 1:30am your time, we will show you the men's table

:42:24.:42:26.

tennis singles final. Last night we showed you the women's and tingling

:42:27.:42:28.

of China saw off her compatriot to win gold and the men's final will be

:42:29.:42:31.

between 2-macro Chinese, Ma Long and Zhang Jike. We have been to study

:42:32.:42:38.

China's long history in this event, this is a fascinating look at the

:42:39.:42:45.

politics of ping pong. Table tennis in China is more than

:42:46.:42:49.

just a sport, it's a national obsession. It is found everywhere,

:42:50.:42:53.

even in the vast rural hinterland or here, off and Main Street in

:42:54.:42:58.

downtown Beijing. The guys' technique is incredible. Think

:42:59.:43:06.

football, cricket, Dickens and the Beatles and add them together and

:43:07.:43:09.

you will have some idea of how central table tennis is to modern

:43:10.:43:16.

Chinese consciousness. It was here in Tiananmen Square in the mid-19

:43:17.:43:22.

50s that the little white ball first started rolling in red China.

:43:23.:43:26.

Chairman Mao decreed that table tennis was to be the sport of the

:43:27.:43:31.

masses. But this was not part of the public health programme but a

:43:32.:43:34.

straightforward political calculation. Chairman Mao reasoned

:43:35.:43:38.

that if hundreds of millions took up Batt-macro oddball, China would

:43:39.:43:41.

conquer the world, something that would bolster his leadership. He was

:43:42.:43:49.

right. In 1959, a Chinese man is astonished the world by becoming

:43:50.:43:53.

China's first world champion in any sport. He was succeeded by a man who

:43:54.:44:00.

won the next three titles. Chairman Mao hailed his players are icons of

:44:01.:44:04.

revolutionary virtue, making play-off the fact they used a

:44:05.:44:07.

distinctive pen holder grip where it is held between thumb and

:44:08.:44:11.

forefinger, a technique used to this day by the older generation. This

:44:12.:44:17.

was table tennis with Chinese characteristics and the masses were

:44:18.:44:20.

mesmerised. But then in 1967, something wholly unexpected happened

:44:21.:44:25.

when the white ball came to an abrupt halt.

:44:26.:44:31.

here at the national training centre the team received a letter saying

:44:32.:44:42.

the sport had become a Bastian of anti-Maoism. They were sent off to

:44:43.:44:49.

begin two years of hard labour. They were the lucky ones. The first world

:44:50.:44:55.

champion and two couches were put -- two coaches were put under house

:44:56.:45:00.

arrest and tortured. All three committed suicide. In 1971, Chairman

:45:01.:45:07.

Mao allowed table tennis bag of the world stage and again the

:45:08.:45:11.

consequences would be extraordinary. At the World Championships in Japan,

:45:12.:45:19.

a coach befriended a player from a Maracana and pictures of the

:45:20.:45:26.

handshake were printed in the press, leading -- from America. It led to

:45:27.:45:31.

an invitation. Richard Nixon called it the week that shook the world.

:45:32.:45:35.

Ten months later he followed in their footsteps. On behalf of the

:45:36.:45:41.

government of the people'srepublic of china has extended an invitation

:45:42.:45:46.

to President Nixon to visit China at an appropriate date. Ping-pong

:45:47.:45:54.

diplomacy mark the first step of china's re-engagement with the

:45:55.:45:58.

world. But the most curious episode in their table tennis history was

:45:59.:46:05.

yet to come. Once again China surrendered global domination, but

:46:06.:46:10.

not because of politics but because of this blonde Swede, who

:46:11.:46:15.

transformed the dynamics of table tennis with audacious spins. China,

:46:16.:46:19.

who still held to the pen holder technique, could not keep up. It

:46:20.:46:29.

took Deng Xiaoping to liberate table tennis. Allowing players to keep

:46:30.:46:37.

some prize money and to give up the pen holder style. This player, one

:46:38.:46:44.

of the new breed, revolutionised the technique when the ball was hit with

:46:45.:46:48.

the Riverside of the back. Perhaps the greatest irony was that Sydney

:46:49.:46:55.

Olympics, when this player defeated the ageing Swede to win one of the

:46:56.:46:59.

most hypnotic finals of the last half century and this ball will for

:47:00.:47:03.

ever define this extraordinary nation.

:47:04.:47:08.

I am sure you will agree it is a fascinating bit of telly, which sets

:47:09.:47:15.

us up nicely for the men's singles table tennis finals at 1:30am. We

:47:16.:47:23.

will not be able to bring queue all of it but you can continue to watch

it on the Red Button. Guess who is back. They are there. The circuit

:47:27.:47:33.

trainers. Unfortunately, Antony Worrall Thompson is not with them.

:47:34.:47:37.

We have had an Antony Worrall Thompson lookalike the last few

:47:38.:47:43.

nights. Ladies jumping over the cones. A remarkable pair of

:47:44.:47:47.

trousers. I am not sure what she is doing. For those saying, go and join

:47:48.:47:54.

in, we are serious broadcasters on the BBC. We cannot partake of

:47:55.:47:58.

circuit training while bringing you the latest Olympic news. Which is

:47:59.:48:04.

what the Wii will do. A busy day. Day six in Rio.

:48:05.:48:11.

The headlines. We had a gold medal for Team GB in the team sprint in

:48:12.:48:20.

the Velodrome. A fourth Olympic title for Jason Kenny and a new

:48:21.:48:28.

Olympic record for the boys. Also an amazing performance from

:48:29.:48:33.

Simone Biles and team USA in the all-around gymnastics within's

:48:34.:48:36.

final. We showed it to you on BBC Four and she by some distance was

:48:37.:48:43.

top of the tree. Sadly it was not to be a gold medal

:48:44.:48:51.

for Team GB but Fiji have won their first Olympic medal. Gold medal for

:48:52.:48:56.

Fiji in the rugby sevens, beating Great Britain 43-7 will stop there

:48:57.:49:05.

was a silver medal earlier for David Florence and Richard Hounslow in the

:49:06.:49:08.

canoe double, as they did four years in London.

:49:09.:49:19.

Also silver for Katherine Grainger and Vicky Thornley in the double

:49:20.:49:23.

sculls. They just lost out to Poland. They were ahead with two

:49:24.:49:28.

metres to go but delighted with their silver medal after a difficult

:49:29.:49:36.

build-up to these Games. We also have seen a world record for

:49:37.:49:42.

the women in the team pursuit in qualifying for the semifinals.

:49:43.:49:54.

Normally at this part of the night we like to run through some of the

tech and comments and questions you have sent. -- texts. We will do that

:50:03.:50:08.

later. We have badminton. The first time we have showed it to you on BBC

:50:09.:50:14.

Four. Time to have a guide to the wonderful sport.

:50:15.:50:22.

Badminton was included as an official Olympic sport in Barcelona

:50:23.:50:29.

in 1992. In singles and doubles the line nearest the net is called the

:50:30.:50:34.

short service line and if the server does not reach this line it is a no

:50:35.:50:39.

is served. Service in singles can be played as far as the back boundary

:50:40.:50:44.

line between doubles players can only serve as far as the long

:50:45.:50:48.

service line. There are five events at the Olympics of each match the

:50:49.:50:52.

best-of-3 games and the winner of the game is the personal pair who

:50:53.:50:58.

reaches 21 firsts. If the score is drawn at 20 points lead, the pair or

:50:59.:51:03.

person gaining a two point lead is the winner. If it reaches 29-29,

:51:04.:51:10.

whoever scores the next point wins. The server begins from the right

:51:11.:51:15.

service court, serving diagonally. If the server wins the point they

:51:16.:51:19.

will serve again but from the left. If they lose the point, service

:51:20.:51:26.

passes to the opponent. There are four main types of shots.

:51:27.:51:33.

The serve, the lob, the drop shot and the smash.

:51:34.:51:39.

Please can take many forms and can be played with the forehand or the

:51:40.:51:47.

backhand. The serve can be low, high, flicked, but must be played

:51:48.:51:52.

when the shuttlecock is below the player's waste. China is the most

:51:53.:51:56.

successful badminton playing nation at the Olympics and in London they

:51:57.:52:01.

won a gold medal in every competition. In fact, no other

:52:02.:52:07.

nation has won gold in the women's competition since 1996.

:52:08.:52:15.

This is where Chris and Gabby Adcock find themselves. They have been

:52:16.:52:20.

drawn in an incredibly tough group. We heard of the dominance of the

:52:21.:52:25.

Chinese. They are in with China, Denmark and Poland. And we will show

:52:26.:52:32.

you their first game. Taking on the top two from this group. It is a

:52:33.:52:43.

round robin. Taking on the pair who won silver. Team GB one set to the

:52:44.:52:55.

good. And your commentator is Simon Reid.

:52:56.:53:08.

Quickly in on the serve. A big guy. Six foot two. Quick to see his

:53:09.:53:59.

opportunity. More and more pressure from the

:54:00.:54:12.

Adcocks. A huge bit of luck. Probably feel

:54:13.:54:50.

they are due some. Nothing Chris Adcock could do about

:54:51.:54:58.

that. Good defence from Chris and Gabby.

:54:59.:56:49.

Once more seizing the moment and they are back in front.

:56:50.:57:28.

No wonder he clenched his fist, he was all over the court, was Chris.

:57:29.:57:36.

Forcing the mistake from Xu. Serving well. Few opportunities for

:57:37.:58:02.

the Chinese to attack the serve. Keeping it really tight.

:58:03.:58:20.

That was better from Ma. From the full force of Chris, a well

:58:21.:58:30.

manipulated reply. It is only the second point they

:58:31.:59:08.

have got on their serve. Getting a little frustrated with herself will

:59:09.:59:12.

stop but not long afterwards, the winning smile.

:59:13.:59:31.

So strong in the legs. So light on his feet.

:59:32.:00:13.

Again, precision play from Gabby Adcock. Keeping the serve tight.

:00:14.:00:23.

Very few opportunities to attack. This is a really good, healthy spell

:00:24.:00:57.

from the Brits. Quarterfinalists in the World Championships in Jakarta

:00:58.:01:04.

last year, Commonwealth Games gold medallists.

:01:05.:01:09.

Did really well, awkward shot. Xu Chen had no chance there. A 3-point

:01:10.:02:10.

lead restored. They were just looking at each other

:02:11.:02:30.

there, Xu Chen and Ma Jin. I think starting to look very promising for

:02:31.:02:34.

Chris and Gabby Adcock. Get shorter and we can go for a

:02:35.:02:49.

little bit, when they were picked in its fine, when they play a flat,

:02:50.:02:57.

come off, that's good. You are doing good. Take your time between points,

:02:58.:03:00.

keep pushing. Everything going according to plan

:03:01.:03:07.

for the Brits. Married three years now. They say

:03:08.:03:21.

their partnership on the court was long before their partnership of

:03:22.:03:33.

court. -- off court. So there is really any blame. A very fresh

:03:34.:03:38.

partnership on court. That was better from the Chinese,

:03:39.:04:07.

working much more as a team. Showing that they are not a spent force in

:04:08.:04:11.

this match. Still an awful lot to do to rescue it. They have been not

:04:12.:04:22.

comprehensively outplayed but definitely it's the Brits who have

:04:23.:04:23.

been on top. If that doesn't help their cause,

:04:24.:04:35.

the odd mistake from Xu Chen. They are working so well are the

:04:36.:05:24.

team are the Adcocks, probing for the opening. Chris just launching it

:05:25.:05:29.

at Ma Jin. This is their biggest lead. In the

:05:30.:05:39.

second game. Tricky to take, very well directed

:05:40.:06:16.

from the Crow one. -- from Xu Chen. There's going to be more of that. He

:06:17.:06:23.

has to take some sort of control now.

:06:24.:06:38.

That is a bad miss, a huge opportunity there. To restore that

:06:39.:06:44.

5-point advantage. They thought the shuttle was

:06:45.:06:57.

wobbling. The referee is not having it, so we

:06:58.:07:06.

continue, 10-13. That's well played. Starting to edge

:07:07.:07:36.

and nibble into this lead now. Ma Jin playing an awful lot better

:07:37.:07:37.

frontcourt. Shots that he wasn't missing in the

:07:38.:08:10.

opening game just starting to go astray, so the lead now down to one.

:08:11.:09:07.

Well, unfortunate, she played that rally so well did acrid to. -- did

:09:08.:09:22.

Ma Jin. Really homing in on it. She was there, the flick off the net but

:09:23.:09:25.

nothing doing. How quick he was, so light on his

:09:26.:09:59.

feet, then the devastating power to finish.

:10:00.:10:25.

Second time. Gaby has been called, the waist high serve.

:10:26.:10:53.

They are attacking the server. -- attacking the serve.

:10:54.:11:33.

Saw the opportunity. Crunch it down between them, but it didn't happen.

:11:34.:11:45.

This is a good recovery from the Chinese, who looked in a perilous

:11:46.:11:47.

position. It's now 15-15. Just being told that he is able to

:11:48.:12:16.

change the shuttle if he wants, but he has to let him know straightaway

:12:17.:12:18.

way to avoid any delay. It's nip and tuck in this second

:12:19.:12:29.

game. Ma Jin read that perfectly, on her

:12:30.:12:59.

way back as the serve was listed towards her. They came here on level

:13:00.:13:04.

terms. -- the game here on level terms.

:13:05.:13:21.

Miss read that, did Gabby. She wants a new shuttle as a result.

:13:22.:13:32.

The Chinese hit the front for this first time in this second game.

:13:33.:13:52.

There's a chance therefore Ma Jin, but in the end it wasn't close and

:13:53.:13:57.

it's back level. The Chinese are three points away.

:13:58.:14:30.

To take it into a deciding game. Xu was too quick. They really have

:14:31.:14:58.

worked better in the second game. Two points away now.

:14:59.:15:14.

A great return. They are not out of it. Taking this service point here

:15:15.:15:20.

will be a huge help. Such a clever shot. It was set up

:15:21.:15:52.

well. That smash. Lovely technique from Chris Adcock. They are level

:15:53.:16:00.

again. Now they are two points away from victory.

:16:01.:16:21.

Oh, yes! He had to twist his body to get to its. But brilliantly done

:16:22.:16:34.

from Chris Adcock. And it is match point.

:16:35.:17:00.

Ouch. The first to two points ahead, now.

:17:01.:17:29.

Yes. Could not release sees on the advantage they had. It is Xu who

:17:30.:17:43.

puts it away. -- could not really see.

:17:44.:18:08.

Just away. They fought valiantly, the Chinese. They looked out of it.

:18:09.:18:24.

They will change around in much better spirits now. That cued drop

:18:25.:18:33.

shot, but it did not work. It is one gay beach.

:18:34.:18:39.

-- it is one game each. Over on Court number one, the number four

:18:40.:18:59.

seeds, a point down, 18-17. Winning the first game 20 1-18. It is very

:19:00.:19:04.

close. All of the matches in this group will be close.

:19:05.:19:14.

But they really were getting their act together in the second game. One

:19:15.:19:24.

or two clumsy mistakes in the first, but out of the system in the end

:19:25.:19:26.

there. The sweeping of the court has

:19:27.:19:40.

finished and we are just about ready to go for this deciding game between

:19:41.:19:47.

Chris and Gabby Adcock. The world number sevens from Great Britain.

:19:48.:19:55.

And Xu and Ma. The Brits have led in both games so

:19:56.:20:16.

far. They will be hoping for the same here.

:20:17.:20:41.

No, not quite. Not quite working at the moment for Chris Adcock.

:20:42.:21:11.

This matches beginning to turn around now.

:21:12.:21:35.

The Brits have got to stop this little run. Momentum is switching to

:21:36.:21:40.

the Chinese. Two going through in each of the

:21:41.:22:01.

four groups, a different setup from 2012. The controversy, eight players

:22:02.:22:07.

disqualified after being accused of playing Toulouse to manipulate their

:22:08.:22:13.

place in the knockout stages and get favourable draws. They have reject

:22:14.:22:22.

things. -- to lose. There will be none of that here. Far from it.

:22:23.:22:25.

Super play. That was a terrific smash. Must've

:22:26.:23:40.

just got the line. There is a review system. Two challenges per game. The

:23:41.:23:50.

Adcocks choosing not to use one of theirs there. Strength from Gabby

:23:51.:23:56.

Adcock. A few more points they are picking

:23:57.:24:30.

up directly off the serve. The Chinese looking very healthy.

:24:31.:25:04.

Suddenly, Xu is controlling a lot of these rallies.

:25:05.:25:24.

The lead is stretching very quickly now.

:25:25.:25:44.

They just cannot get a run going these two.

:25:45.:26:03.

Gabby Adcock so sharp, quick to see the opportunity again. That

:26:04.:26:07.

dynamically. -- dynamic leap. She really was bossing things early

:26:08.:26:25.

on in the front court. But finding it difficult now.

:26:26.:26:35.

I think he was not sure whether it was going out or not. More concerned

:26:36.:26:42.

with the geography and getting the return in. -- van getting the return

:26:43.:26:47.

in. A huge smash. Shots like this

:26:48.:27:09.

measure faster than the Grand Prix. When it comes down from that height,

:27:10.:27:26.

almost impossible to deal with. Just doing enough to make it

:27:27.:28:01.

difficult. Did well here to recover. Just could

:28:02.:28:23.

not bury them early on in the point. Still four points adrift.

:28:24.:28:42.

The Chinese wanted a break but they were told to play.

:28:43.:28:54.

Really an impressive sight when he gets a high. So much spring in his

:28:55.:29:08.

step. The lead is down to three now. In panic when they went 8-2 down.

:29:09.:29:48.

Still very much in this match, Chris and Gabby Adcock.

:29:49.:30:17.

So, a new shuttle. A couple of points directly on serve would be a

:30:18.:30:24.

great Philip for them. Chris and Gaby have won just a

:30:25.:30:57.

couple of points behind their serve. We'll get back on that game, push

:30:58.:31:05.

too hard, they get flat and we'll react. The first movies get the

:31:06.:31:10.

block in first, down the sides then he starts with the new. A bit of a

:31:11.:31:18.

tight serving, compete for the shot, OK? Make sure we get right of the

:31:19.:31:25.

court this end when they press you. Type serving -- tight serving. First

:31:26.:31:35.

objective. Getting right tied up the court. Pressing as much as they can.

:31:36.:32:08.

Again, too much on it from Xu Chen Ford Gabby to be able to deal with.

:32:09.:32:19.

The lead goes to five. It's been as high as six. Looking very healthy

:32:20.:32:21.

again. Stranded there, nothing she could

:32:22.:32:46.

do. It's not a great return on the lead

:32:47.:33:31.

is back up to six now. It's going to need something monumental from these

:33:32.:33:32.

two to rescue this game. Gabby setting it up with that little

:33:33.:34:02.

short shot, then the athleticism of Chris comes into play.

:34:03.:34:11.

Chris will be disappointed with that one.

:34:12.:35:27.

The did that. A bit of fortune, can they capitalise on it? Get run going

:35:28.:35:58.

here. Put some real pressure on the Chinese number twos.

:35:59.:36:21.

It is tantalisingly close now for the Chinese.

:36:22.:36:37.

Just a few errors now creeping in to the Brits' game.

:36:38.:37:16.

That 5-point cushion restored. Very nearly home.

:37:17.:37:31.

Yes. If they are going to review it. It looked like it was going out, but

:37:32.:37:44.

it didn't really have the legs on it. This might well be in but they

:37:45.:37:48.

are using the review system for the first time. A review system that has

:37:49.:37:51.

been in play for three years now. A couple of challenges allowed each

:37:52.:38:05.

game. This was close enough for them to want to get involved. Have they

:38:06.:38:11.

been successful? It looked like it might have got the line. And it did.

:38:12.:38:21.

They really need a run of points on serve. It's just not happening.

:38:22.:38:52.

The energy seems to be going out of them. Has the chance come and gone?

:38:53.:39:15.

A sleight of hand, the movement there from Chris Adcock, and the

:39:16.:39:58.

lead down to three. So close. But now they are two

:39:59.:40:35.

points away from taking this opening match in the group.

:40:36.:41:05.

A bit of indecision and here are five match points. For the Chinese

:41:06.:41:10.

number twos. There it is! And they came back very

:41:11.:41:34.

strongly after a difficult first game, where they were

:41:35.:41:36.

comprehensively outplayed. But they got their act together.

:41:37.:41:45.

Disappointing start for Chris and Gabby Adcock. Still two more matches

:41:46.:41:50.

to be played, remember two from the group will go through to the

:41:51.:41:54.

quarterfinal, but that's not an auspicious beginning in what has

:41:55.:41:59.

been called the group of death. They are going to have to do very well

:42:00.:42:03.

now to survive, they have to win both their matches. Not beyond the

:42:04.:42:08.

realms of possibility, but the first much goes to Xu Chen and Ma Jin,

:42:09.:42:17.

13-21, 22-20, 20 1-15. I hope you enjoyed a bit of

:42:18.:42:27.

badminton on BBC Four. Do not forget we have table tennis coming up a

:42:28.:42:33.

little bit later. It's very strange to be down on Copacabana at this

:42:34.:42:36.

time of night because it's unbelievably windy for about two

:42:37.:42:40.

hours, then around about this time and it is, hold on what time is it

:42:41.:42:48.

here? It is 8:45pm here and the wind dies down at this time of night and

:42:49.:42:51.

the paper that was stopping around on the desk has gone very quiet.

:42:52.:42:55.

We'll bring you up-to-date with all the news here on day six of the Rio

:42:56.:42:59.

games. We have plenty of sport before I'll finish at 2am, but so

:43:00.:43:03.

much has happened today, so here are the day six headlines.

:43:04.:43:10.

Gold in the team sprint for Philip Hindes, Jason Kenny and Callum

:43:11.:43:16.

Skinner Team GB, a fourth Olympic title for Jason Kenny at the trio

:43:17.:43:23.

produced and new Olympic record. We have seen real magic from Simone

:43:24.:43:27.

Biles at the all-around gymnastic women's final, the American produced

:43:28.:43:31.

a gold medal winning performance. Britain's Ellie Downie was 13th.

:43:32.:43:39.

They are going wild in Fiji at the moment after their rugby side have

:43:40.:43:43.

won their first-ever Olympic medal in any sport, gold in the men's

:43:44.:43:47.

rugby sevens. Silver Ford Team GB, who were well beaten in the final

:43:48.:43:54.

43-7. Silver also in the canoe double Ford David Florence and

:43:55.:44:01.

Richard Hounslow, the same medal the 14-macro years ago in London.

:44:02.:44:08.

Katherine Grainger and Vicki Thornley won silver in the double

:44:09.:44:11.

sculls. They were not even meant to be at the Olympics a few months ago

:44:12.:44:19.

and now they are silver medallists. And there was a world record for

:44:20.:44:22.

Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell Shand, Elinor Barker and Katie Archibald in

:44:23.:44:27.

the women's team pursuit qualifier. They sailed through into the

:44:28.:44:27.

semifinals. This is what you can watch at the

:44:28.:44:41.

moment. Team GB have scored in the hockey over on BBC One.

:44:42.:44:53.

0- 01. Team GB women unbeaten so far. And Japan taking on Belarus in

:44:54.:45:04.

the bronze medal match. We will take the gold medal match in the table

:45:05.:45:12.

tennis a little later. I'm just something about Katherine Grainger.

:45:13.:45:18.

An incredible story. She won a gold medal in London and silver medals in

:45:19.:45:23.

previous Games. She is now, if we were American we will say the most

:45:24.:45:34.

winningest. Five medals in total. On the negative side of these Olympic

:45:35.:45:38.

Games. Two stories to bring you up to date stop a Bulgarian

:45:39.:45:45.

steeplechaser who ran in London has tested positive for EPO today. A B

:45:46.:45:59.

sample is to be tested. And a Kenyan coach has been sent home after he

:46:00.:46:04.

posed as an athlete and gave a European athlete that the athlete.

:46:05.:46:11.

The retired sprinter was caught when his face did not match the

:46:12.:46:16.

photograph. The Kenyan athletics associations say they did not

:46:17.:46:26.

facilitate his travel. And a senior source says the unnamed athlete, who

:46:27.:46:30.

is shook up about this, apparently allowed the coach to use

:46:31.:46:37.

accreditation to get food in the athletes' village. When they said

:46:38.:46:42.

they have to test on a random drugs test, for fear of being exposed, the

:46:43.:46:46.

coach went along with that, they found out it was not the athlete,

:46:47.:46:51.

and he was thrown out of the game. We do not know what the truth is

:46:52.:46:56.

that we will try to get to the bottom of it. We will still receive

:46:57.:47:02.

your text messages and tweets. We will read some out before we finish

at 2am. Just seeing a fellow jogging away in the distance. It is always

:47:10.:47:13.

busy on Copacabana Beach. Horrible weather yesterday. Much better

:47:14.:47:19.

tonight. The circuit trainers are back. Look at the lady in green,

:47:20.:47:25.

jiving away. Still no Antony Worrall Thompson. If he comes back, we will

:47:26.:47:30.

get to the bottom of why he wears that top. Maybe it is Antony Worrall

:47:31.:47:37.

Thompson on holiday. We can bring you up-to-date with sailing. There

:47:38.:47:43.

have been six classes. We can bring you up-to-date with everything that

:47:44.:47:47.

has happened with Shirley Robinson. A lot of action out today including

:47:48.:47:54.

three British sailors hoping to defend their gold medal spots

:47:55.:47:57.

including Nick Dempsey, the men's windsurfer. Dorian arrived early to

:47:58.:48:07.

set up for three races. The Dutch gold medallist would start the day a

:48:08.:48:11.

single point behind the British series leader. Dempsey arrived last

:48:12.:48:16.

minute, and when he got going, he was still on firing form.

:48:17.:48:24.

Race seven under way for the men's windsurfing. Nick Dempsey of Great

:48:25.:48:28.

Britain leading. Working hard to earn shout. Nick Dempsey approaching

:48:29.:48:41.

the windward mark. He has the breeze and he certainly has the speed. Nick

:48:42.:48:49.

Dempsey of Great Britain, he is on the right hand side. Wilhelm of

:48:50.:48:56.

Germany coming back from the left. There is the Netherlands

:48:57.:49:13.

sailor. Dorian van Rijsselberghe. This could add points to the buffer

:49:14.:49:20.

between first and second. Nick Dempsey of Great Britain working

:49:21.:49:25.

hard. He has closed the gap to Wilhelm of Germany. He, -- he feels

:49:26.:49:34.

the pressure from Dempsey. Look how close the race has become. Looking

:49:35.:49:40.

good for Nick Dempsey. I do not think the German counterattack. I

:49:41.:49:45.

think Nick Dempsey is pushing him out. More breeze coming down, the

:49:46.:49:53.

bottom of your screen, that is what Nick Dempsey is hoping for.

:49:54.:49:58.

Interesting tactical adjustment. You would never see a short tax putting

:49:59.:50:02.

like that that Nick Dempsey obviously saw that. And he thought,

:50:03.:50:09.

I will step up. He is screaming along at 14 knots. Fantastic sailing

:50:10.:50:23.

by Mick. Nick Dempsey takes the lead after a tactical move and

:50:24.:50:26.

overhauling the German. One small, down to the bottom. Germany finding

:50:27.:50:37.

good breeze. Wilhelm of Germany trying to roll over the top of Nick

:50:38.:50:46.

Dempsey. Great Britain answers with furious pumping, trying to keep the

:50:47.:50:50.

board going, trying to hold off the damage. Nick Dempsey working hard,

:50:51.:50:57.

trying to reel in the German sailor. Wilhelm answering, extending away.

:50:58.:51:03.

And now the jibe from the German sailor. Nick Dempsey does not let

:51:04.:51:09.

him cross ahead. On top of Germany to try to hold them off. Germany and

:51:10.:51:21.

Great Britain locks into a battle in the closing stages. Toni Wilhelm of

:51:22.:51:25.

Germany was leading. Nick Dempsey beat him on the up wind leg. But on

:51:26.:51:32.

the run, Germany getting their revenge. Toni Wilhelm working

:51:33.:51:37.

incredibly hard through the boom and managing to sail through the lead of

:51:38.:51:43.

Nick Dempsey. Toni Wilhelm snatching back the lead from Nick Dempsey, but

:51:44.:51:49.

Dempsey very close. Trying to position the board windward of the

:51:50.:51:54.

German. Toni Wilhelm is happy to say a low, working the red card. Nick

:51:55.:51:59.

Dempsey trying to work over the top. Both boards at the moment not quite

:52:00.:52:07.

laying the finish. Toni Wilhelm of Germany managing to pull away from

:52:08.:52:13.

the British sailor. Taking back the lead in race seven and Germany

:52:14.:52:16.

crosses the line. Great Britain in second. Nick

:52:17.:52:24.

Dempsey finishes race seven in second place. A fantastic final

:52:25.:52:29.

battle right to the line with the German and he has every right to

:52:30.:52:32.

feel happy. The tables turned in favour of the

:52:33.:52:37.

Dutchman as Dorian van Rijsselberghe row race eight. Nick Dempsey finish

:52:38.:52:42.

fifth. Advantage Dorian van Rijsselberghe for the first time in

:52:43.:52:48.

this Olympic Games. Nick Dempsey pumping his way, trying to get here,

:52:49.:52:54.

struggling to clear the back. Not a lot of breeze in his rate. Dorian

:52:55.:52:59.

van Rijsselberghe has done a superb job on the top breach, taking first

:53:00.:53:03.

place, while great British hopes with Nick Dempsey slip to nine.

:53:04.:53:16.

It would always come down to somebody and Dorian. He is the man

:53:17.:53:23.

to beat. Today I lost points on him, which was frustrating that it is

:53:24.:53:28.

brilliant to still be in the fight and tomorrow it will be a case of

:53:29.:53:33.

staying in touch. On the Ocean course, Giles Scott had a faltering

:53:34.:53:38.

start but recovered to finish his fifth race 11th and then slotted

:53:39.:53:44.

home a win to maintain the overall lead overnight. It looked like a

:53:45.:53:53.

mixed bag. I was frustrated with it. I have to be happy with coming back

:53:54.:53:56.

and winning the second race, which is great. Extended overall, but

:53:57.:54:05.

equally, you look at everything and analyse everything and it was a

:54:06.:54:13.

simple thing. It has undoubtedly cost me points, which is

:54:14.:54:17.

frustrating. That being said, I am in a good place. The British mixed

:54:18.:54:24.

pair continue and encouraging story, sharing the lead with the Austrians

:54:25.:54:30.

last night. Tonight, it is an Australian duo who won two races

:54:31.:54:35.

today and sit on equal points with Ben Saxton and Groves. Saskia Clark

:54:36.:54:45.

and partner currently sit in bronze medal position. Luke Patience and

:54:46.:54:52.

Chris Grub are currently in sick. Thanks for that for getting in

:54:53.:54:58.

contact on BBC Four. I will get that bottle of water away! The wind is

:54:59.:55:06.

back. Steady on! Thanks for getting in contact to say you are staying up

:55:07.:55:10.

late to watch Olympics coverage on BBC Four. H says he is only watching

:55:11.:55:20.

to see if Antony Worrall Thompson turns up. Another says, I am sorry

:55:21.:55:25.

to say that Antony Worrall Thompson owns the pub round the corner from

:55:26.:55:31.

me so I am not sure he can be in Rio at the same time. Maybe that is why

:55:32.:55:37.

he is not on the beach, maybe he has gone back home to run the pub! Many

:55:38.:55:42.

questions need to be answered! Ben Eaton enjoyed the badminton, almost

:55:43.:55:48.

as much as watching Simone Biles in the gymnastics. Thanks for admin

:55:49.:55:57.

term after some idiot called it shuttler earlier on. What did

:55:58.:56:03.

Matthew Pinsent said when Simone Biles won? He said one by -- won by

:56:04.:56:23.

country Biles. We are going to pick up on some archery we showed you

:56:24.:56:28.

earlier. We showed you Naomi Folkard's earlier rounds are now we

:56:29.:56:32.

will show you a quarterfinal. A tough test for Naomi Folkard, taking

:56:33.:56:39.

on the South Korean, the second seed who has already won the team gold

:56:40.:56:45.

medal stop this is a sport in which the South Koreans are incredibly

:56:46.:56:49.

dominant. If it is the first time you have watched archery, we will

:56:50.:57:03.

show you all you need to know. Archery appeared on occasions before

:57:04.:57:12.

becoming a permanent event in 1972. The arrows reach speeds of around

:57:13.:57:19.

140 mph. During competition archers must stand 70 metres from the

:57:20.:57:24.

target, which is 1.2 metres in diameter with ten rings of values

:57:25.:57:29.

between one and ten points. The ten points ring is at the centre with a

:57:30.:57:34.

diameter of 12.2 centimetres. There are four event that the Olympics,

:57:35.:57:40.

individual and team competitions for men and women. It is split in two

:57:41.:57:45.

phases with the 70 metre ranking that determines your place for the

:57:46.:57:50.

head-to-head competition. For the individual, archers compete

:57:51.:57:53.

over five sets of three arrows The person with the highest score

:57:54.:57:55.

at the end of each set If scores are tied, each archer

:57:56.:58:00.

receives one point each. The first person to reach six points

:58:01.:58:03.

is the winner. In the team competition,

:58:04.:58:06.

there are three minutes to compete Six arrows per set,

:58:07.:58:08.

two per team member. They have two minutes to shoot

:58:09.:58:16.

all six arrows. The first team to reach five points

:58:17.:58:19.

wins and progresses to the next stage in their quest

:58:20.:58:22.

for Olympic medal places. Let's show you the quarterfinal.

:58:23.:58:40.

Commentary from the Sambodromo comes from Charlie Broome.

:58:41.:58:55.

For card the lowest ranked archer in this quarterfinal, seeded 23. And

:58:56.:59:18.

she has opened with a seven. She can ill afford any loose arrows like

:59:19.:59:24.

that. They need to be all in the gold, really, because if Chung does

:59:25.:59:30.

drop off, then she can take advantage. Here she needs a ten just

:59:31.:59:42.

to draw level. The number two seed has a 1-point advantage. Coming into

:59:43.:59:47.

the final arrow of the first set. So, there is a chance here for

:59:48.:00:00.

Folkard to tie it, but she needs a ten. So, Folkard behind in this

:00:01.:00:13.

quarterfinal already. She has lost the first set 26-25, and Chang

:00:14.:00:29.

Hye-jijn is two points to the good. She has had a lot of success in

:00:30.:00:37.

recent times, winning in the Asian games 2014, Asian champion 2015, a

:00:38.:00:42.

very tough competitor. Of course, a gold medallist in London already. A

:00:43.:00:48.

great opportunity for Folkard, though, isn't it? That is what you

:00:49.:00:51.

want to do, test yourself against the best.

:00:52.:00:59.

Of course, we meant Rio, we are living former years in the past! I

:01:00.:01:10.

don't think so. Let's see if Folkard can fire up here for. You have a

:01:11.:01:16.

great for years to come if you are! Well, a let off for Folkard now. Can

:01:17.:01:25.

she return to gold scoring ways? Chang finds the centre of the

:01:26.:02:04.

target, the first time either archer has scored ten. Folkard responds

:02:05.:02:12.

with a 10. 9, it is a tide set, and that is a

:02:13.:02:31.

good comeback from Folkard. Really good arrow, that last one from

:02:32.:02:38.

Folkard. That was needed. You can just see some British support here

:02:39.:02:45.

for her. That is exactly what Folkard did hear. It gives her a

:02:46.:02:50.

foothold in this match now. She knows it will go to at least four

:02:51.:02:54.

sets, because it is the first to six, remember. So it just puts a

:02:55.:03:02.

little question mark in Chang's mind.

:03:03.:03:13.

So, Folkard will shoot first, a gain on target one, because she is behind

:03:14.:03:18.

on the scoreboard. The two-time European silver

:03:19.:03:34.

medallist, Naomi Folkard. In the quarterfinals, on the biggest stage

:03:35.:03:35.

of them all for an archer. That is an excellent start to the

:03:36.:03:56.

third set. And that will just help her build a platform in this set.

:03:57.:04:02.

That is a great response from Chang, put the ball back into Folkard's

:04:03.:04:04.

court. A little grimace from Folkard as she

:04:05.:04:19.

released it, and that opens the door to Chang. 9.

:04:20.:04:31.

Even if Folkard finds the 10, it is still a gold score for Chang.

:04:32.:04:40.

Folkard needs to put as much pressure on her opponent as she can,

:04:41.:04:44.

and she does. It is a superb response from Folkard.

:04:45.:04:50.

So, 9 is enough, just on the bottom. But it will do for Chang Hye-jin,

:04:51.:05:04.

who moves into a 5-1 set point lead, so Folkard has to win sets for and

:05:05.:05:13.

five. Will we be seeing a similar performance from her as a couple of

:05:14.:05:17.

others in the quarterfinals? A loose arrow each set, eight 7, and 8.

:05:18.:05:36.

Consequently Chang has won outside the gold zone, but she has been the

:05:37.:05:44.

more consistent of the two in this match so far. So, Folkard in the

:05:45.:05:49.

must win set shoots first. This time, Chang can't reply, so

:05:50.:06:25.

Folkard with an opportunity to really put Chang under some

:06:26.:06:26.

pressure. Chang with the reply, yes,

:06:27.:06:51.

brilliant. That is just what the Korean fans wanted, Folkard knows

:06:52.:06:58.

that even a 10 might not be enough. It is eight 9. So, 8 will be enough,

:06:59.:07:13.

it is a 9, and Chang Hye-jin is through to the semifinals. It is a

:07:14.:07:18.

comfortable win over Naomi Folkard, the number 23 seed, by seven set

:07:19.:07:29.

points to one. And Chang just the two arrows outside of the gold,

:07:30.:07:34.

comfortably beating Naomi Folkard, goes through to the final four.

:07:35.:07:43.

Naomi, it wasn't quite to be, but it was a career-best. It is a long time

:07:44.:07:50.

since I finished in the top eight at an international event, and so I

:07:51.:07:56.

have had a really good week, and diarrhoea only proud of finishing so

:07:57.:08:03.

high. You were up against it in the previous ride with the crowd against

:08:04.:08:11.

the Brazilian. Yes, we had such big support in London, so it was

:08:12.:08:14.

interesting being on the other side. Being against someone in Brazil is

:08:15.:08:22.

good, I kept focus, I used it as motivation to keep shooting strong.

:08:23.:08:25.

How important was that result, not just for your sport but you? For the

:08:26.:08:33.

sport, it is very important. I think we will be more likely to get more

:08:34.:08:37.

funding for the sport now we have a top eight at the Olympics, and for

:08:38.:08:44.

me personally, it's... It is the result of 11 years of hard work. It

:08:45.:08:52.

hasn't been easy for you, has it? No, I nearly quit in October because

:08:53.:09:03.

I was just shooting... I had had a really fine season, the shooting

:09:04.:09:08.

wasn't good, but my coach, I started working with him and he turned it

:09:09.:09:11.

around, made things more positive. We didn't have to do a lot to my

:09:12.:09:18.

technique, just fine details, and I have turned it around and I am

:09:19.:09:21.

shooting a lot better now, so I am really happy to finish in the top

:09:22.:09:23.

eight, which I couldn't have dreams about a few weeks ago. You have

:09:24.:09:28.

spoken in the past about assessing your future after these games. I am

:09:29.:09:35.

ready for a new challenge. I might carry on shooting a little bit,

:09:36.:09:39.

maybe to compete against the up and coming kids. But I want a new

:09:40.:09:46.

challenge, get into coaching, or something like that. Very best of

:09:47.:09:52.

luck, well done. Thank you. Great to hear, very proud comments

:09:53.:09:57.

there from Naomi, her best performance in an Olympic Games.

:09:58.:10:03.

Over on BBC One, that is some masked! Team GB in the hockey

:10:04.:10:08.

involved against Japan, unbeaten in the tournament so far, Team GB, and

:10:09.:10:13.

they are going well, they are a goal of the moment, that was a penalty

:10:14.:10:16.

corner which didn't allow the Japanese to equalise. That is live

:10:17.:10:21.

on BBC One at the moment. Normally at this time of night we are showing

:10:22.:10:24.

you beach volleyball, that is available on the Red Button right

:10:25.:10:28.

now. You can see Germany against Italy, that is available on the Red

:10:29.:10:36.

Button and the app as well, and if you go to the BBC Sport app, you can

:10:37.:10:41.

find a full schedule of all the events throughout the day, and you

:10:42.:10:44.

can also plan exactly what you are going to watch, as well.

:10:45.:10:50.

Also available on the website, something I tried for the first time

:10:51.:10:57.

today. You can find the athlete that matches you at the Olympics. You

:10:58.:11:01.

putting your height, weight and age, anything else you need to put in,

:11:02.:11:05.

and it takes you through where you are any averages, so I am six foot

:11:06.:11:10.

six, I am in the 90th centile for my height when it comes to Olympians,

:11:11.:11:14.

and they have matched me to three current Olympians, Andreas for

:11:15.:11:21.

Uzbekistan, Nicolas Morata who plays volleyball for France, and Vladimir

:11:22.:11:24.

even off, it am into an star from Russia. We have a bit of badminton

:11:25.:11:36.

coming up a little later. We have seen Folkard making it through to

:11:37.:11:42.

the semifinals, she went all the way to the final, she had already won

:11:43.:11:47.

the team gold. We will see her now in that final, taking on lease Unruh

:11:48.:11:56.

from Germany. Germany have won medals, but Lisa

:11:57.:12:11.

Unruh will win their first-ever individual medal here, but can she

:12:12.:12:17.

get the better of the number six? Lisa Unruh is the world number 16,

:12:18.:12:21.

the underdog coming into this one, but we have seen the form book

:12:22.:12:26.

ripped up in this final day of action in the women's individual

:12:27.:12:34.

competition. Chang Hye-jin of Korea will get this final under way, and

:12:35.:12:36.

starts with eight 9. Just gets the line, and that is

:12:37.:13:16.

important for Unruh, just to keep her in this set.

:13:17.:13:24.

The other factor to bearing mind is the wind is inconsistent and can be

:13:25.:13:32.

unpredictable at various times, and we have seen even a good example of

:13:33.:13:35.

that happening right now, that wind going up to three metres per second

:13:36.:13:45.

all of a sudden. It is too wide, and Lisa Unruh can't take anything from

:13:46.:13:46.

the opening set. 26-27 to Chang. Huge expectation in

:13:47.:14:06.

the nation of the public of Korea. The expectation of gold success is

:14:07.:14:14.

routine in the country, and Chang here will be having to deal with

:14:15.:14:24.

that factor as well. Unruh has been super impressive so far in her

:14:25.:14:28.

matches. Even the shoot off to the world number two in the

:14:29.:14:32.

quarterfinals was really impressive. She is going to have to hold it

:14:33.:14:40.

together here. Chang blames the first set. So, will shoot first in

:14:41.:14:44.

this second set. Her composure has been super

:14:45.:14:55.

impressive. Unruh needs to find a ten if

:14:56.:15:43.

possible. She needs to get a foothold in this final. Ten! She

:15:44.:15:52.

gets it. She asks the question of Chang Hyejin. Which she can answer.

:15:53.:16:02.

And Lisa Unruh has levelled it up. She has taken the second set 28-26.

:16:03.:16:08.

It is two Sepp points apiece. That was superb from Unruh, absolutely

:16:09.:16:16.

outstanding. The whole idea is to keep your body on an even keel.

:16:17.:16:23.

Achieve what you want every time, which is a ten, then forget about

:16:24.:16:28.

it, move on and do it again. Chang has been super impressive as well.

:16:29.:16:34.

She is an Asian champion from 2015, one of the Korean archers that has

:16:35.:16:38.

been in and out of the Korean national side in recent years. Very

:16:39.:16:42.

hard to lock down a spot in the Korean national team. You mentioned

:16:43.:16:48.

she was the Asian champion in 2015 and a silver medallist in the Asian

:16:49.:16:54.

games in 2014. Unruh is the European bronze medallist from this year. The

:16:55.:16:59.

European Championships were held in Nottingham in England in the last

:17:00.:17:01.

weekend of May. Yeah, lovely rhythm. She didn't look

:17:02.:17:26.

flustered at all. That was almost perfection from Unruh. This is a

:17:27.:17:52.

small chance for Unruh. Oh, dear. Now, this is a big chance for Chang.

:17:53.:18:04.

A nine will win the set. Wow. Here is another chance for Unruh. She had

:18:05.:18:13.

a chance in the first set to tie it with a nine and win it with a ten.

:18:14.:18:18.

She scored an eight, and this time she can't take it either. Unruh has

:18:19.:18:23.

had chances in this match. She hasn't been able to take them, and

:18:24.:18:29.

as a result finds herself 4-2 down. She uses the third set 27-26 and now

:18:30.:18:35.

must get something from this fourth set to keep the gold medal match

:18:36.:18:43.

alive. She could be 5-1 up right now, but she is down 4-2. She won

:18:44.:18:50.

the second set and could have tied that set with a ten. But instead,

:18:51.:18:57.

she is 4-2 down. Those are the very small margins that can have big

:18:58.:19:09.

impacts in the sport of archery. Chang has been in superb form all

:19:10.:19:13.

the way through. She was terrific as well in the team's competition that

:19:14.:19:21.

career succeeded him as well. -- Korea succeeded in the team

:19:22.:19:23.

competition as well. That is mighty close to the ten

:19:24.:19:49.

line, but it just missed. Great start insert four. The momentum is

:19:50.:19:55.

with Chang. It is right on the lines for Unruh.

:19:56.:20:15.

Ten. That could be the gold medal right there. Unruh needs a ten, and

:20:16.:20:28.

even that might not be enough. Nine. 27. So a tour more will give Chang

:20:29.:20:36.

the medal. Is the gold medal heading to Korea? It is! It is an eight, and

:20:37.:20:45.

Chang Hyejin of Korea takes the gold medal. She wins the fourth set

:20:46.:20:57.

28-27. And Korea make it double gold in the women's competition. They won

:20:58.:21:01.

the team event, and they now win the individual. A wonderful picture of

:21:02.:21:11.

Chang, just taking in the moment. But Lisa Unruh will be disappointed,

:21:12.:21:17.

but she does win her country passed my first-ever female individual

:21:18.:21:23.

medal in archery -- her country's first individual medal. Delight for

:21:24.:21:28.

the Korean fans. Chang Hyejin is your Olympic champion.

:21:29.:21:40.

DAN WALKER: so Chang Hyejin wins not only the individual gold, but the

:21:41.:21:44.

team gold as well. You can see why South Korea are so dominant in that

:21:45.:21:49.

sport. Max sent in this comment on social media after watching Naomi

:21:50.:21:52.

Folkard and what she said after her defeat in the quarterfinal to Chang.

:21:53.:21:57.

Respect to Naomi in the archery. Shows that the Olympics is not all

:21:58.:22:01.

about the medals. She has done her sport the world of good. She was

:22:02.:22:05.

saying she wants to go into the coaching side now. That is it

:22:06.:22:08.

sometimes. I know the gold is the pinnacle of sport, and we have

:22:09.:22:12.

spoken tonight about a couple of silvers for Katherine Grainger and

:22:13.:22:16.

Vicky Thornley in the rowing. Silver sometimes can be a disappointment,

:22:17.:22:20.

and so can a bronze. But for others, sometimes it is just

:22:21.:22:36.

about being an Olympian, just about competing. Naomi Folkard came to

:22:37.:22:40.

these Games never thinking she would win the gold, but want to be an

:22:41.:22:42.

Olympian. At these Olympic Games, they are not her first, but she has

:22:43.:22:45.

done better here and progressed further than ever before. Max, thank

:22:46.:22:48.

you for that comment. We are running slightly behind in the badminton. We

:22:49.:22:52.

were hoping to bring you Kirsty Gilmour of Team GB in the women's

:22:53.:22:57.

singles badminton, a really tough competition. Only the top individual

:22:58.:23:00.

in each of the pools goes through to the knockout stages, but they are

:23:01.:23:03.

running behind in the badminton tonight, so we can't bring you that

:23:04.:23:07.

at the moment. It is at least 20 minutes behind schedule and we are

:23:08.:23:11.

only with you until two in the morning in the UK. So we are going

:23:12.:23:15.

to bring you some table tennis. Not the gold medal match, but the bronze

:23:16.:23:26.

medal match. It is Japan against Belarus. We join it with the

:23:27.:23:29.

Japanese ping-pong Star 2-1 up. COMMENTATOR: Mizutani still have to

:23:30.:23:48.

serve. Samsonov guided the return down the line with the flick, but

:23:49.:23:58.

has to put Mizutani under pressure. Easy to say from the commentary box.

:23:59.:24:13.

Much better return of serve there. Just can't switch off at any stage,

:24:14.:24:25.

can you, or you will be punished. He is going for that chop block, a very

:24:26.:24:32.

difficult shot. Keep it very low and tight over the net.

:24:33.:24:52.

A lot of backspin on the serve as he opened his racket, went under the

:24:53.:25:26.

ball. Samsonov didn't realise there was as much spin on the ball as

:25:27.:25:36.

there was. Lots of defensive work from Samsonov. Looked like he was

:25:37.:25:44.

going to lose that, but he kept at it.

:25:45.:25:55.

It looked like it went straight over the net. It didn't, just to clarify

:25:56.:26:11.

that in case you were confused. Samsonov

:26:12.:26:11.

Not quite enough room between his elbow and his body to get the swing

:26:12.:26:27.

he wanted. That was a wonderful recovery by

:26:28.:27:06.

Mizutani. When he caught the net, that changed the dynamics of the

:27:07.:27:12.

rally completely. Marvellous improvisation by young Mizutani. Not

:27:13.:27:19.

a lot of room for manoeuvre, was that? That came right into the body,

:27:20.:27:34.

swerving into Samsonov. Good top spin from Mizutani. Japan have had

:27:35.:27:38.

some great players over the years, but young Mizutani is the youngest

:27:39.:27:41.

player ever to win the Japanese Championships. There are other

:27:42.:27:50.

players who are household names to the table tennis fans. It is

:27:51.:27:59.

Mizutani who holds the record. He won that championship when he was

:28:00.:28:04.

17. He is now 27. Seven championships, a record. It is a 70%

:28:05.:28:15.

chance of him winning. He has brought the other young Japanese

:28:16.:28:18.

players through with him. In Tokyo in four years' time, I think Japan

:28:19.:28:24.

will be good contenders for quite a few table tennis medals. They are

:28:25.:28:28.

certainly hoping to get this one as well. The springboard to the home

:28:29.:28:35.

ground, with home support. He hold the bat very loose. That

:28:36.:29:09.

allows more wrist action to be put into the service action. You would

:29:10.:29:21.

not normally expect Samsonov to miss that. Just dipped on him. It was the

:29:22.:29:34.

topspin and the bounce of the ball. They are playing with plastic balls

:29:35.:29:36.

now. It used to be celluloid. To bring the Japanese of game point.

:29:37.:29:54.

He needs to win three more to be on level terms. Given the form of

:29:55.:30:03.

Mizutani... That is one of them. Good backhand return, a little side

:30:04.:30:07.

spin on that, it is a shot that has been developed by the players. You

:30:08.:30:13.

can see here it comes around the outside. They call it the banana

:30:14.:30:17.

return, it makes the ball curve a little like a banana. It is used to

:30:18.:30:23.

great effect from the forehand side when returning service. Couldn't

:30:24.:30:33.

repeat it a second time! And another point, just a point behind Mizutani,

:30:34.:30:42.

excellent execution from Vladimir Samsonov. A time-out has been called

:30:43.:30:49.

by Japan. The momentum was with Mizutani, but quite clearly Samsonov

:30:50.:30:54.

has put a run of points together, the momentum now with Brazil, and

:30:55.:30:58.

the Japanese bench knows how important this game is. A pivotal

:30:59.:31:05.

moment in this match, pivotal moment in this fourth game. And quite

:31:06.:31:10.

simply, there will be words of advice going on there underlying

:31:11.:31:14.

everything that is happening, Japan will be hoping to break them a

:31:15.:31:19.

mentor but quite clearly Samsonov had developed. And it is always

:31:20.:31:24.

interesting, the first point, there is a little bit of psychological.

:31:25.:31:39.

This will be significant, either fire Samsonov to pull it level, or

:31:40.:31:45.

there is a game point to make it 3-1 four Mizutani. Big point. Who is

:31:46.:31:51.

going to win it? We are just about find out?

:31:52.:32:08.

There is the answer to the question, Belarus's Samsonov. Cat and mouse,

:32:09.:32:19.

both players touching very tight, it hits the top of the net, a

:32:20.:32:23.

millimetre higher and it would have been a good backhand topspin. Nine

:32:24.:32:30.

points each, Samsonov serving, and therefore has to be the slight

:32:31.:32:36.

favourite to win. It is an advantage to serve in this game.

:32:37.:32:43.

Well, you are right, takes the point, and has a game point. Just

:32:44.:32:48.

the one. Vladi is the shout, that is his

:32:49.:33:16.

nickname. Oh, it is long! It is long, and it is ten apiece. So now

:33:17.:33:24.

we have alternate serving, and the first player to win two Clear

:33:25.:33:29.

points, but what a great rally. Tension of the highest order here.

:33:30.:33:35.

It is a tough game mentally. We have seen it is a tough game physically.

:33:36.:33:42.

Of the Olympic Games is the peak for these players. They will be

:33:43.:33:48.

desperate to take the bronze medal home with them. A great flick out

:33:49.:33:55.

wide to the left-handed forehand from Samsonov. Second game point.

:33:56.:34:01.

Perfect placement, you can see on the replay it was right in the

:34:02.:34:09.

corner. Another game point for Samsonov to make it two apiece in

:34:10.:34:12.

this bronze medal match. He wasn't able to get across quick

:34:13.:34:25.

enough, that was lightning quick from Mizutani. It is a really

:34:26.:34:30.

difficult shot, the backhand down the line, but look at that, under

:34:31.:34:34.

pressure, facing the game point, no hesitation. Very positive play by

:34:35.:34:37.

the 27-year-old. The number four seed against the

:34:38.:34:44.

number seven seed here. Air shot from the Japanese player,

:34:45.:35:08.

and once again, another game point. He is a battler, isn't he, the

:35:09.:35:16.

40-year-old? Never looks good in slow motion when that happens. The

:35:17.:35:22.

psychological advantage surely with Samsonov, third game point, but if

:35:23.:35:25.

he doesn't convert this, perhaps the doubts. To creep in. Third time

:35:26.:35:32.

lucky. Again, the backhand down the line,

:35:33.:35:45.

it was a great service there from Samsonov. Mizutani hesitated, he was

:35:46.:35:52.

going to play away from the table, then he hesitated and played over

:35:53.:35:56.

the table, but he still somehow regained control. There is that

:35:57.:36:03.

backhand down the line, Samsonov thought he was going to go on the

:36:04.:36:06.

diagonal, he made an educated guess, he guessed wrong. 12 apiece.

:36:07.:36:16.

Now it is the Japanese, Mizutani, who has the advantage of the serve.

:36:17.:36:36.

Having saved three-game points, Mizutani with a game point of his

:36:37.:36:45.

own. Heavy topspin on that backhand.

:36:46.:36:57.

Under pressure, then, the serve rotating every point, of course.

:36:58.:37:03.

First game point for Japan and Mizutani.

:37:04.:37:27.

Oh, it just took the edge of the table, and it is fortunate for

:37:28.:37:37.

Mizutani, he wraps up that game, and that gives him a real advantage in

:37:38.:37:43.

this match. You have to feel for Vladimir Samsonov, who had

:37:44.:37:48.

three-game points, played so positively in this match, and it

:37:49.:37:52.

just nibbled the edge of the table. Watch it from this angle here. What

:37:53.:37:58.

a great rally, top spin to topspin, and look at that, that was the

:37:59.:38:02.

finest of ages, a millimetre between winning and losing. And you know,

:38:03.:38:07.

for all the training and all the skill, you still need a slice of

:38:08.:38:14.

luck. So, that is how it looks, 3-1, and that was by far the best rally,

:38:15.:38:18.

by far the best game of the match so far.

:38:19.:38:22.

So that was quite clearly the key game in the match, Samsonov with the

:38:23.:38:30.

advantages, and we join it with the Japanese table tennis star on the

:38:31.:38:32.

verge of the win. You can see how much it means, that

:38:33.:38:42.

guarantees him the bronze medal, a 4-1 win over Vladimir Samsonov of

:38:43.:38:48.

Belarus. And coverage of the gold match continues uninterrupted on the

:38:49.:38:55.

Red Button, all the red buttons you can watch tonight. In the finals,

:38:56.:39:13.

Vladimir Samsonov will take on Zhang Jike, but

:39:14.:39:25.

it is Samsonov. We can go to the Badminton now. It is round robin,

:39:26.:39:38.

but only the group winners go through to the knockout stage, so

:39:39.:39:44.

every game is crucial. This is Gilmour, and Simon Reed is your

:39:45.:39:45.

commentator. Gilmour has made a really good start

:39:46.:39:50.

here, up against a lively contender, Jaquet from Switzerland.

:39:51.:40:22.

Kirsty Gilmour was a runner-up earlier this year.

:40:23.:40:30.

As you can see, she has moved out to a 2-point cushion. It is her first

:40:31.:40:37.

Olympics, Kirsty. S another fine rally. She is very

:40:38.:41:06.

sound overhead when putting in the smash. And dropping it short, as she

:41:07.:41:10.

did there. So, a 3-point cushion. Just long. They have a review system

:41:11.:41:38.

here. They are allowed two challenges each game.

:41:39.:41:52.

That was a good leave. So, the 3-point cushion re-established.

:41:53.:42:15.

Silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, lost to

:42:16.:42:25.

Michelle-Lee Ahye of Canada in the gold-medal game.

:42:26.:42:32.

Jaquet starting to take the initiative a little more now.

:42:33.:43:08.

Really fine play, the behind the headshot, did really well to get

:43:09.:43:20.

that uncanny move across, and then a big smash to finish, so Gilmour with

:43:21.:43:22.

a 2-point cushion. Jaquet just starting to nibble into

:43:23.:43:55.

that lead now. First to 21 point each game, best-of-3 games.

:43:56.:44:20.

And she felt she had to win that points twice. Gilmour halfway

:44:21.:45:09.

through the rally thought the ball was going long, did well to get back

:45:10.:45:18.

with some effect. But Jaquet on a roll now.

:45:19.:45:29.

It's out. What a testing rally that was. 26 stroke rally. Plenty of

:45:30.:46:20.

variety. It was in the end comfortably out. You can see how

:46:21.:46:21.

happy she is. Nine points each. It is a pleasing match to watch, a

:46:22.:46:51.

lot of variety. It is warm in here. Already, the sweat is being mopped

:46:52.:46:54.

up. Just too much power for Jaquet.

:46:55.:47:43.

Gilmour, having held the lead, lost it and now retains it.

:47:44.:47:59.

A tricky shot to counterplay. Jaquet is doing well, staying with her.

:48:00.:48:25.

A little too wide. Jaquet looking very composed. There are three in

:48:26.:48:43.

this group D, these two, plus the Bulgarian. The winner of the group

:48:44.:48:46.

goes through to the last 16. Sorry, my Swiss German isn't up to

:48:47.:49:15.

translating that! But you can see that they are pleased with the way

:49:16.:49:17.

she started that. They certainly should be.

:49:18.:49:33.

A stern test in this opening game for Kirsty Gilmour.

:49:34.:49:52.

She is being pushed this way and that, Jaquet. But she is giving a

:49:53.:49:58.

very good account of herself. Again, a bit of indecision. Was it

:49:59.:50:24.

going in or out? But Jaquet has spent a good deal of

:50:25.:50:42.

the time on the wrong end of rallies. She has defended so well.

:50:43.:51:06.

Jaquet, with a 2-point cushion for the first time.

:51:07.:51:24.

Kirsty needed that to stop the momentum which was building.

:51:25.:52:04.

This is an impressive run of points now. Four in a row for Gilmour. She

:52:05.:52:45.

is back two points in front. Very difficult to pick a winner in

:52:46.:53:21.

this opening game. Once more, Gilmour quick to see the

:53:22.:53:53.

opportunity. Gilmour was winner of the world

:53:54.:54:12.

Grand Prix event in the Netherlands last year. And runner-up in two

:54:13.:54:19.

other Grand Prix events, so she's really sticking performances

:54:20.:54:24.

together, which is why her ranking is her best ever at 15.

:54:25.:54:36.

Plenty of time to towel down. It is particularly hot in here.

:54:37.:55:35.

Gilmour is doing a terrific job of manoeuvring Jaquet around, corner to

:55:36.:55:39.

corner, keeping her guessing. Should have made it. Nasty landing

:55:40.:56:30.

there. That was a super rally. But ungainly. And when she finished up,

:56:31.:56:37.

you can see she is favouring that right leg, which has a fair amount

:56:38.:56:44.

of strapping. And that was a horrible, jarring motion.

:56:45.:57:00.

She looks relatively unconcerned. Still with a 3-point cushion.

:57:01.:57:29.

Again, it was Gilmour asking the questions, but Jaquet has defended

:57:30.:57:38.

well. She is not out of this game. Beautiful net play.

:57:39.:58:12.

This is good rear guard action from the Swiss. Just a point behind now.

:58:13.:58:22.

New shuttle requested, and given. That is disappointing, after all the

:58:23.:58:52.

hard work she has put in, to make a mistake like that. Gilmour is two

:58:53.:58:56.

points away from this opening game. There is a challenge. Initially

:58:57.:00:09.

called in. She thought it was out. Looks all right.

:00:10.:00:21.

That is the game, all right. It looked for a while that Jaquet was

:00:22.:00:33.

coming back into that, defending so well. But Gilmour renewed her effort

:00:34.:00:39.

and knuckle down to business, and she is a game to be good here.

:00:40.:00:48.

So, first game to Kirsty Gilmour and that is where we are going to leave

:00:49.:00:51.

it on BBC Four because it's two o'clock in the morning and we have

:00:52.:00:55.

reached home time for us, at least. But badminton coverage continues on

:00:56.:01:00.

the Red Button. So does the table tennis final. Both of those will

:01:01.:01:06.

remain live on the Red Button, right until the conclusion of both those

:01:07.:01:10.

matches. The table tennis final is the men's gold medal match between

:01:11.:01:18.

the two Chinese players. Ma Long is doing particularly well at the

:01:19.:01:22.

moment. He is two games up. That is just about as for day number six of

:01:23.:01:29.

the Olympics here in Rio. What we always do, as I'm sure you know if

:01:30.:01:33.

you have stayed up until this point so far, is at the end of the day, we

:01:34.:01:37.

like to reflect away from Team GB and bring you three stories we think

:01:38.:01:42.

are worthy of your attention. This is our Rio Trio. We start with Fiji,

:01:43.:01:48.

who won their first ever Olympic medal. It was gold in the rugby

:01:49.:01:51.

sevens, beating Great Britain. They thumped them 43-7. Jubilant scenes

:01:52.:01:58.

not only in Rio, but also back home in Fiji.

:01:59.:02:07.

Miles wins the big one. Simone Biles with a jaw-dropping floor routine

:02:08.:02:09.

and virtually everything else as well. Success for her in the

:02:10.:02:15.

all-around gymnastic title. The 19-year-old is already the most

:02:16.:02:20.

decorated gymnast in history. And have a look at this for

:02:21.:02:25.

celebration of the day from Germany's Barbra in the women's 50

:02:26.:02:30.

metres rifle. She knows she has won it, she's off! Down on her knees.

:02:31.:02:40.

And she didn't just save it for when she was in her full kit, by the way.

:02:41.:02:45.

If you wait for a moment, you will see her on the podium. She is off

:02:46.:02:51.

again, and why not? She has won the gold. She finished sixth in 2012,

:02:52.:02:55.

and you can see how much that gold medal means to her.

:02:56.:03:01.

But David Team GB as well, won gold in three silvers -- great day for

:03:02.:03:05.

Team GB. If you stay up and switched to BBC One, you can see a man going

:03:06.:03:10.

for his 22nd gold all on his own. He had help with the relays, but we are

:03:11.:03:14.

talking about Michael Phelps. At three o'clock UK time, you can see

:03:15.:03:18.

him taking on fellow countryman Ryan Lochte in the 200 individual medley.

:03:19.:03:24.

That is in one hour on BBC One. Tomorrow, Friday, well, it is Friday

:03:25.:03:29.

already, but Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson are in

:03:30.:03:33.

action from about 1.30 on day one of the women's heptathlon. Loads to

:03:34.:03:35.

look

:03:36.:03:38.
