Day 9 BBC One: 22.30-00.00 Olympics

Welcome back to a steaming hot night in the Olympic Park here in Rio. If

you were expecting Match Of The Day 2, that is now on BBC Two. Very good

matches, including a cracker between Liverpool and Arsenal, and Jose Mari

near's first game in charge of Manchester United. -- Jose Mourinho.

But here, gold medals flying in from every direction, the latest here in

the velodrome is Jason Kenny who has beaten team-mate Callum Skinner,

gold Jason Kenny on the right, silver for Skinner on the left,

Jason Kenny defends his title he won in London and wins his fifth gold

medal, and he still has the keirin to come tomorrow. Tuesday, Sir Chris

Hoy tells me. We also have a gold from Justin Rose in golf, two goals

in gymnastics from Max Whitlock, and Andy Murray is defending his title

right now against Juan Martin Del Potro. This was set point, and he

was receiving serve with the opportunity to take the first set.

COMMENTATOR: It is set point Murray, and there is the set. S veneer

viewers, Murray went to 4-1, Del Potro clawed his way back, ...

CLARE BALDING: And we are now joining live pictures, Del Potro is

one break up already, but Andy Murray has a break back point. Paul

Hand and Simon Reed. COMMENTATOR: It is the second time

Del Potro has saved break point, but this is some of the best tennis in

the match in this particular game. Murray broken early on, but fighting

like a lion here in the second game. It has been a rich vein, dropping it

short for the forehand. It is almost as if Andy Murray can sense that Del

Potro is a little fatigued right now, and it is a rich passage of

play for him. Can Del Potro come up with the goods for a third time?

Serving percentage so much better than Murray, 68% first serves in,

Murray 46. The return was great, the second

shot wasn't. The sense of deflation because we are so used to watching

Andy Murray bestows, so solid. Not so at the moment.

serve. What was that? Maybe a little bit of

contamination, having not broken the last game. Bit of a flat point from

Andy Murray there. He saw him come forward, and he

night, 204 K, that one. In contrast to the opening point of

the game, that one had a lot of energy. Andy really committed to

that, well inside the baseline. A surprise, he looked so rhythmic in

much comeback to form this year from injury, knocked Stan Wawrinka ad of

Wimbledon, knocked Novak Djokovic charge of the first round of this

who has won Wimbledon this year. Big Argentinian supported Nat Stadium,

but an awful lot of Murray supporters as well, and I know

people watching at home will be right behind Murray as he tries to

become the first man ever to defend the Olympic title. Match Of The Day

2 is over on BBC Two, because here on BBC One, we are sticking with the

tennis. COMMENTATOR: There is the Olympic

Park. The Olympic Tennis Centre, the biggest in Brazil. Tennis not a

major sport Brazil, despite the exploits of Gustavo Quetta and in

recent years, football is dominant, but there is sufficient interest

here to virtually fill this 10,000 seater stadium. Del Potro's match

against Rafa was great to behold. And you have to credit Del Potro as

well, he has done well to engineer what feels like a flimsy lead

against an ever more robust Andy Murray. It has been a topsy-turvy

kind of match, though. A few sways in the mentor back and forth, as you

would expect. Del Potro meandering around with a slightly fatigued look

from time to time but he is often deceptive cover he is a strongman.

As is Murray. You can think he is on his last

legs, and three hours later, he is still running up a spring chicken.

He has looked good at the net, Del Potro. He has, he has coming over 20

times and won 13 of them. Anti-Islamic a lot of first serves

in, almost 70%, 68 in fact, to Murray's 49.

-- and he is landing a lot of first serves in.

He will not be denied. Even Murray, with all the qualities he has, is

asking a lot when Del Potro gets on that forehand. When he does so,

Murray's court position goes deeper and deeper back.

So, new balls, and Murray just looked a little flat on that last

It is a huge task of Andy Murray when you are facing a very physical

combat and in Juan Martin Del Potro, your body will go through a lull

physically, and it seems he is in one right now.

Just getting confirmation from Pascal that it was long.

One more crushing blow and Murray should not expect any less than that

when he drops it as short as that. Hasn't he responded to the loss of

the first set? Del Potro has kept on battering away at Murray, showing a

lot of spirit. Del Potro dropping it short and

Murray suitably obliging. Safely enough, it is not a vintage

Murray, but he trails 3-2 in the second set.

CLARE BALDING: Back with the tenor shortly, back at the Velodrome,

bringing you up-to-date with Mark Cavendish. He was six after the

scratch race. Next up he had the individual pursuit and let us join

the closing stages. This is a stupendous right from Mark

Cavendish. Absolutely brilliant. 13 macro struggling, almost going

slower with every revolution and Cavendish can see him. He can they

Gaviria in front of him. What a gift to get a catch at this point in the

race just as he is starting to tire. Perfect. He has something to aim at,

Cavendish takes the bell. Rob ribosomes. He has caught the world

champion -- what a ride this is. Half a lap to go. Into the back

straight. Up towards the line. Mark Cavendish at a time of 4.16, 8.7

eight. Here comes Gaviria who went out too fast. He really paid for it

and only the seventh fastest time. Mark Cavendish has really made a

point with that performance. Mark Cavendish sticking out his tongue.

They were amazed. You take it in context with Bradley's Olympic

record. 1.5 seconds behind that is phenomenal. This was one of the

events we thought would be weaker and he has smashed it and there is

still some way to go but at the moment he is on top of the pile. C

Juan Martin Del Potro. Andy Murray having taken the first.

Murray need some inspiration. He has been a little flat over the last

quarter of an hour. It is a fight to get the magic going.

You're absolutely right. He needs Del Potro to miss a few first

serves, 89% first serves landed in the set. That is quite astonishing

and it gives Murray no window on the point.

Just the way. Murray's challenging. That obscured our view of that. I

think Murray thought he had it. It was close enough to challenge.

retaliates. Massive hitting from Juan Martin Del Potro. Blow after

blow, raining down on Murray. It is a huge effort from a man who

12 months ago was so upset about the problems with his wrist, three

operations within a year on his wrist and he is not giving up the

game. Could not even watch it on his television. Now, he is giving his

absolute best in this Olympic final. No, he has misted! Murray stayed his

ground. Is Del Potro going to challenge? It was definitely wide.

Seemingly, just seeking confirmation from Pascal. Perhaps, he said, I

will just challenge, if you like. Definitely out there.

Starting to serve a lot better now, Murray.

Mighty impressive, not just the power, but the way he dealt with the

slice, the movement, the execution, the skill level, it is the bone

crushing power that lands the telling blow. The height accounting

for a lot of strength in this man. First serve percentage in the first

set, you sort, 39, so far in this set, it is 72. Perversely, he won

the first set and he is losing this one. But if he carries on serving

like that, and he gets a look at a Del Potro return, who knows how this

second set might go? It is for- through. An update in the Velodrome.

Mark Cavendish had the fastest time in the individual pursuit section.

This is leg two. Just being beaten by their Mariam Bolkvadze.

Phenomenal performance. Mark Cavendish will be happy with his

performance -- Lasse Norman Hansen?. That is like breaking the high jump

record. They are multi event cyclist. It means Mark Cavendish

after two events moves up to third place and Lasse Norman Hansen is out

in front. There is Cavendish, recovering look like he is changing

his suit for his race. It will be the elimination race. The person who

is last on every other lap gets knocked out. Jason Kenny won the

gold medal in the men's individual sprint. Callum Skinner took the

silver medal. Back to the tennis, Murray will make break down in the

second set having taken the first seven games. He is playing Del

Potro. He is a big lad. He sure is and he is playing

big-time tennis right now. They have blended and well. --

blended in well. He is commentating for Brazilian

television, one of the most famous Brazilian tennis players of all

time. Sledgehammer blow. Never tire of

when that racquet tip just drops that great big distance, accelerates

in doing so. Murray desperate to break back.

Cannot quite get a handle on it. It is a familiar sound. When Del

Potro launches up the ball, that valid when the racquet cracks into

It has just been a relentless length of shot from Del Potro that Murray

can do nothing about. It is just knocking him off balance, it is

pulling him. Let's go, from Murray. At times in

the last 15, 20 minutes, he has almost looked powerless to do

anything about it. Well, he was due a miss. When he

finds his spots, he can wrench the match away from you, Del Potro, but

Murray has a little way in here. Can he hold on?

A Rory McArdle from the Argentines. -- shout of approval. This is a

level up at one set all. Oh, yes! Great skill. Because the

preceding shot wasn't up to much. He had the drop shot which sat

upright type, I thought Del Potro would do more with that, but it went

right that Murray, beautiful hands to deflect it right back into the

space. Murray digging in. Andy Murray had

his best in that point, asking a number of tough questions, putting

the ball into all parts of the court the Del Potro who was trying to

unleash that furious forehand, running round his backhand as much

as possible. But he is blowing after that point. Wouldn't Murray love to

give him an identical point right here?

UMPIRE: Let, first service. He called a let. Murray didn't hear

it. Perhaps he didn't want to hear it.

Del Potro dumps forehand. Murray holds, but Del Potro will serve for

the second set. So, how are his nerves right now?

How crucial this is. He has to take this second set, surely? You would

imagine so, with all of his endeavours so far in this

tournament, he must be quite exhausted, so a critical set, as we

said in the first Del Potro. So, he is being asked the serve it out

question after the sit down by Andy Murray, one of the best returners of

serve in the game, of course, but being rendered ineffective due to a

high quality of serving of Del Potro. Thus far in the set. Murray

has played better in the latter half of the set than he did at the start.

It is a lovely night. It is difficult to believe this is winter

in Brazil, but it is. The temperature today was up towards 30

Celsius. Now it is pleasant, I would think around 20, 20 one. So, what is

Del Potro made off here? Murray will examine, that's for sure. Del Potro

serving for the second set. We have already been going to hours and six

minutes. Murray defending as if his life

depended on it. He understands how important that first point is in the

service game. He is not the quickest to play. Was

he any slower than? CHEERING

Just enough weight to buckle Andy Murray. He is desperate to get his

teeth into this return game. Oh, yes. Murray again asking the

question, and what an answer that was from Del Potro. You have to

credit the return approach from Andy Murray there, very brave, but Del

Potro coming up with a tremendous pass here.

Well, it was a big ask even for someone hitting it is consistently

well as Del Potro. Set point number two.

Yes. That time, Andy Murray giving Del Potro some of his own medicine.

Some huge forehands. Almost suggesting, I am fed up of being

bullied, have some of this back. Very intense point from Murray

there. Murray was going to challenge it,

you'd looked all right, I to say. He is not moving across. Inspired

challenge. -- it looked all right, I have to say.

So good. Relentless from Del Potro. Gone on the front foot and was not

going to relinquish the grep. -- grep. -- grip.

A huge shot from this huge man and after two and a quarter hours, we

are back where we started, it is one set all. CLARE BALDING: And up to

the stage of the Olympics, it has been best of three sets but for the

final it is best of five. Del Potro level things up, but still a long

way to go on a searingly hot day and night in Rio. It has been a

sensational day so far for British sport. Andy Murray will have gained

a huge lift because five gold medals have been won. This is what has

happened so far. Until today, Great Britain had never won Olympics

gymnastics gold but two Kevin Long with Max Whitlock winning both the

floor and the pommel horse, Louis Smith took the silver on the pommel

horse. It was a British one to on the track as Jason Kenny won his

fifth Olympic gold, beating his team-mate Callum Skinner who took

the silver medal. Justin Rose health of the open champion Henrik Stenson

to become the first British Olympic champion for 112 years. He said the

people who doubted golf or wrong. He said it had been at the forefront of

his mind. In sailing, Nick Dempsey got Britain's first medal of the

Olympic regatta with the silver medal in the windsurfing. That is

now official. And there will be another British medal on the way in

the water as Giles Scott has guaranteed gold in the men's fin and

that will be confirmed in the medal race on Tuesday. Mark Cavendish has

moved up to third place after two events in the omnium. The

elimination race will take place on BBC Four but Chris Hoy has been

watching Jason Kenny who was the sprint champion in London defend his

title in style against Callum Skinner. Here is the medal ceremony

with Simon. Silver medallist and representing Great Britain... Callum

Skinner. The silver to go with the gold medal

won on the opening night, that was in the team sprint. Jason Kenny was

alongside him, a team-mate on that occasion. The pair of them, the

roommates going head to head for Olympic gold medal today -- Olympic

gold. They get an extra one every time they win a medal. Jason Kenny's

wonders could be a real problem for the tumble dryer. Now for the gold

medal. Gold medallist and Olympic champion... Representing Great

Britain... Jason Kenny! Jason Kenny, Olympic

sprint champion again, for the second time in his career, silver in

Beijing, gold in London and gold now in Rio and 2016.

Unassuming yet unstoppable, once he has changed into his suit. He looks

to be taking it all in his stride, that is for sure. Good to see him

smile, he has had a difficult few years. Boy, has he timed it right.

He has still got the keirin to come. Jason Kenny and among the best

British. When you're looking at the list of great British Olympians,

there is Chris Hoy and Jason Kenny joins the likes of Bradley Wiggins

and Steve Redgrave on five. He could be up there on six along with you by

the end of the week. I expect that. He has a fantastic chance in the

keirin. Still with the power and the speed he has, I cannot see anyone

touching as long as he stays safe. Three times in Beijing, British

athletes won four gold medals in one day, never before have the British

team won five gold medals at and away games. It is down to Andy

Murray to see if it can be done here in Rio. He is one set all in the

best of five set gold medal match against one Martin Del Potro. Let us

I mentioned at the end of the second set that we are back where we were.

As far as the scoreboard is concerned, we are, but it has taken

a lot out of both players, probably more out of Del Potro. How much has

he got left? How much has yesterday taken out of him?

Del Potro bead Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. He is a very strong

man at 606. We must all take anything for granted. He is a

tireless athlete. Yes it was difficult, but I think he has what

it takes. It is easy raw power. A rocket. That is not fair. It is

otherworldly tennis right now. The serve came down 194 kilometres

per hour, and look at the back-up. Blistering.

We want to see a few more of those. That kind of comes with the

territory on occasions. But not very often of late.

It has been a difficult comeback for Juan Martin Del Potro, even this

year, he has got to the semifinal of a couple of tournaments, I don't

think he has ever played as well as he is right now. Holding to 15,

mirroring that game of Andy Murray's. That was just far too

good. Is he going to challenge? There was

no gesture or fall from the line judge.

UMPIRE: Challenging the call on the left nearside. Del Potro is saying,

how much time due give him? He is just letting Pascal Maria no, I

notice that. But Murray has challenged earlier.

Scoreboard parity, set all, game all, 15-15. All to play for, Gold

medal at stake. He has played drop shot swell. He

has played with imagination. I like it when Murray changes at the

scenery like this. He doesn't want to get into those relentless ground

rallies will Del Potro who at the moment is just too good. Nice to

come to the net occasionally. What you didn't see at home was the

fact that at the end of that point, Del Potro looking exhausted,

frankly. And ace to finish.

UMPIRE: New balls, please. I heard what you said about Del

Potro, his easy power, you think you might last. I wonder if Murray might

doubt that. The only man who can live with him as far as a four or

five hour Matt. This could well be a five-hour match, he would back

himself to last that more than Del Potro, and whether or not you are

right, I think that is in the bank with Murray. You are just trying to

please the British fans at home! I do hear what you're saying, but when

Del Potro is finding his mark, he is unplayable, and obviously it is the

phases he goes through, the and elation is in his performance, he

has to control them, but he can rip the match from Murray. Phenomenal

tennis at the back there, but I think if Murray physically has

enough to sustain, it comes down to that, he will find a way through.

But it is anyone's right now, it is so hard to call. You could argue

either way, as we are doing here. One things for sure, Del Potro is

playing some inspired tennis. When he won the US Open back in 2009, he

was such a destructive force. I reckon since the wrist injury

started, he has not played a better match than he is right now. Agreed.

When you look at his 2016 results, absolutely agree.

Even against Rafa in the semifinal, it was an amazing contest, an

incredible finish, but he is coming even better than that. So, new

balls. Murray will also know he is not

playing badly, he is playing pretty well. I don't think he will be

discouraged. He will be buoyed by some of the signals Del Potro is

occasionally giving off, body language wise.

Aggressive play from Murray there, but all let down by that final shot.

There was a crack on the return of serve from Andy Murray, but he

couldn't follow it up with anything too effective.

He has yet to miss a first serve in this third set, Del Potro.

Del Potro guessed which way he was going, and Murray had to put it a

little further away. And Del Potro has these guys to keep

him going. Good industry and focus from Murray.

You just feel in rallies like that, it is the drip, drip torture for Del

Potro, compounding what happened yesterday. Two and a half hours,

this has been going on. He has come forward with 80% effect,

Andy Murray. We have seen that forehand volley put away all night.

Good serving from Murray. No breaks of serve, and no danger to the

server so far insects number three. We saw that massive match that help

true played in the semifinal in London, it was 19-17 in the third

set when he lost to Federer and really did keep the energy going.

But Murray just on his case now, and you know that Del Potro has got to

keep firing with the same power, the same kind of consistency. Maybe he

will, and if he does, he deserves it. You are winning me over. Andy

Murray with the lead in this third set, so Del Potro is playing catch

up, that is a tough dynamic, to chase the set the whole time. It is

been such a horrific atmosphere out here this evening, all the fans

having a ball. -- a terrific atmosphere.

First double fault of the match for Del Potro.

Well, you wait two and a half hours for the first of all unlike London

buses, they come together. And now the British and the honorary

British, getting involved. They said something.

Just loathe to it. He hates unforced errors with a passion, Andy Murray.

Del Potro is going through a bit of the mini lull here.

Yes six --! He loves his boxing and that was a short right hook. Just

when you thought the Argentinian was on a rampant run again, look at that

moment of inspiration from Andy Murray, doing so well to turn it

back around and get that up and down. Break point, first of the set.

Just missed it! Murray challenging with the move forward. No challenge

from Del Potro. Break point once more, for Murray.

He has got what he wanted. It has taken a while, he has been under the

cosh, he has taken huge punishment, but he has stood tall and now he

gets his reward. Murray gets the break and he leaves 4-2. Any time

that you hit two double faults in a game, Del Potro, that was a lip

service game and he tried to retrieve the situation but in the

end, Murray having his way. Like a roaring lion, he is back. That is

the Brazilians are roaring Murray on the Argentinians trying to drown

them out. One thing occurs to me, I think

Murray and Rafael Nadal who have this nine o'clock flight book, the

driver is going to have to wait. Unlike for you and me, he will. --

but. Murray sensing that Del Potro is

going through a bit of a lull, that was a wounding break of serve and he

is trying to compound the pressure. So good for a Murray. Just the right

tactic for Del Potro, he got Murray so far back. Phenomenally fit,

Murray, absolutely was. We know the skill. Weather the storm from that

bone-crushing forehand again and came out on top this time, there is

a real resilience in defence from Murray, great skills.

You had to take that on the chin. He has taken a few, more than a few.

Blistering pace, you never tire of watching him do this, just crashing

the ball. It is on! No challenge from Del

Potro and Murray has a three-game commission and now set number three.

Three games in a row for Andy Murray, real strong passage of play

for him. Too much for some. We thought it would be an afternoon

match! It is after ten o'clock in the evening. You still feel that it

has a long way to run. Having a sleep amongst all this noise, he

must be very tired! I do not think they are going to sleep. It is a

raucous atmosphere. But not intimidating. Yes, it is a warm and

friendly atmosphere and that has been a theme running through this

games, the Brazilian warmth, the carnival kind of feel, when we went

down to Copacabana beach and the protest was on, it was all done in a

loving sort of way. They were doing the Samba Wylie were protesting! Not

to make light of what is a serious economic situation here, but that is

what it was. This is what sport brings, a lot of light relief in

tricky times. So Del Potro serving to stay in set

number three. Not far wrong. Look, he is going to

challenge. He had a query. Do not know quite what signal Pascal gave

him, but it was enough to go for it. Good call.

Another one drifts on, it is getting to be a pattern. There are more

lulls in the concentration of Del Potro at the moment, Murray has had

some timely resurgent tennis. Was he a fraction slower? Three set

points for Andy Murray. Brilliant! And on this quite

extraordinary day for British board, Andy Murray is one set away from his

second Olympic gold medal -- sport. And didn't he finish it well? It was

beautiful, a spike through the heart of Del Potro, metaphorically

speaking, a wonderful forehand return strike from Murray,

brilliant, 2-1 sets up and Murray is in a commanding position. CLARE

BALDING: Andy Murray looking hugely dominant. One more set and the gold

medal will be his game and it would be the third of four Great Britain

on an extraordinary Sunday. Chris Hoy and I have been watching it and

keeping an eye on what was happening in the elimination race of omnium.

Mark Cavendish was in third place. In the elimination race they go

round, sprinting every other lap and he ever is at the back gets knocked

out. Very exciting but quite dangerous and coming into it at the

back of the field, you will see Hanson who was the leader. It was

hugely important where he went and he was out, narrowly, only just at

the back of the Dane at the back. Thomas Johansson went not long

afterwards. He was relegated for coming off the track. I do not think

he needed to do it -- 52-macro. He made the decision to try and sneak

up the inside -- Roger Kluge. On the final lap it was Italy versus

France. Fantastic sprint to take the win. They were probably two of the

top four riders you would have expected. It was a shame for Mark

Cavendish. So do you think he can win this? I

do. We are going to head off and cheer on Andy Murray and see if he

can get us to another gold medal. Here is an idea of the timetable.

So let's go back to Centre Court. COMMENTATOR: Andy Murray in a bit of

trouble, dropped the opening two points of this first game of the

fourth set. One massive overhead error. Now at 15-30.

It is exactly what happened at the start of the second set. He worked

so hard to take the first, there was a little dip, and it seems it is

happening again here, two break points for the Argentine. Here's

having a howler of a game, Andy Murray. It isn't reflecting quite

right at the moment. Difficult to fathom, and maybe

Murray is struggling to find out exactly why that happened, but it

happened. And Del Potro, to be honest, didn't have to do an awful

lot. A very limp away to concede his service game, he will be frustrated

with that, but Del Potro delighted, as you say, he didn't have to do

much at all, he has the early break in this fourth set.

Just when it was looking really Graham for Del Potro, he has been

handed a lifeline. -- really grim. And they are still with him.

Well, the speed gun is broken, so we can't tell you how quick that was.

Murray has got a warning there. I think for audible obscenity. I hope

you didn't pick it up at home. There is a renewed intensity and Del

Potro that we haven't seen for a while, and that is because he has

been handed a break of serve. These things happen over the course of a

long match. We are almost into the fourth hour.

And because of the gravitas of the situation, you often ask yourself, I

wonder how these athletes slept last night, with having to play for the

gold medal, with it all at stake, how much rest they got, the

adulation Del Potro will have received, having beaten Nadal.

On the other hand, he might have been so shattered that he stopped
