Earlier this week the weather was hot, the competition was hot, the

:00:46.:00:52.

shops were hot. The seeds were sown, but they wilted in the heat. They

:00:53.:01:04.

wilted in the face of the next generation, a new strain cultivated

:01:05.:01:09.

to be more resistant, more durable, more productive than ever before in

:01:10.:01:10.

the face of aggressors. Today, Queen's is about to

:01:11.:01:25.

experience a climate change, so can be hardy perennials re-establish

:01:26.:01:30.

their pre-eminent or will be new super crops continue to bear fruit?

:01:31.:01:35.

It has been one major shock after another at the April Championships,

:01:36.:01:38.

that has been the big talking point along with the weather, which has

:01:39.:01:44.

been super hot. Today it is much cooler, and the 25 degrees expected,

:01:45.:01:47.

much more enjoyable for all of the fans arriving for today's matches as

:01:48.:01:54.

the players battle for a place in the last eight.

:01:55.:01:56.

This is the line-up on Centre Court at the moment. Marin Cilic on court

:01:57.:02:02.

at the moment, second set, up against Stefan Kozlov from America.

:02:03.:02:07.

Jordan Thompson, the conqueror of Andy Murray, text of the Court

:02:08.:02:11.

against former champion Sam Querrey. And then a little look into the

:02:12.:02:14.

future, Daniil Medvedev against Tennessee Kokkinakis, who took out

:02:15.:02:21.

Milos Raonic. And then Jeremy Chardy against Feliciano Lopez, three-time

:02:22.:02:25.

Wimbledon quarterfinalist. They played last week, three sets to

:02:26.:02:29.

Lopes. Lots to look forward to here today and I am delighted to say

:02:30.:02:34.

Peter and Andrew are with me again. It is such a wonderful tournament,

:02:35.:02:38.

this, some new names emerging and that is quite exciting, although we

:02:39.:02:41.

are disappointed the seeds have gone, it is exciting to see the new

:02:42.:02:46.

breed. We have officially entered the age of parody, there are so many

:02:47.:02:53.

good players that if you come on the grass, the first week on grass seems

:02:54.:02:58.

to be a great leveller, and really anybody can beat anyone. It has been

:02:59.:03:03.

a good tournament for the Aussies as well. It has, you are asking me to

:03:04.:03:08.

be pleased about that, and fair enough, when you deserve victory,

:03:09.:03:14.

you deserve it. The biggest shock we have seen this week, this is a guy

:03:15.:03:19.

who got through qualifying, but there was no lack of effort from

:03:20.:03:23.

Andy Murray, Jordan came up with the answers, he has had everything, and

:03:24.:03:34.

while we might not have the biggest names left today, we will see what

:03:35.:03:39.

the reaction is, and it is interesting, Benassi Kokkinakis back

:03:40.:03:43.

from injury, we will see where he can get to, probably top 20

:03:44.:03:51.

ultimately. Jordan Thomas was out practising today, I was so impressed

:03:52.:03:55.

against Andy Murray first of all how big his serve was, how inventive it

:03:56.:04:00.

was. I agree, and the other thing, probably his greatest asset is his

:04:01.:04:05.

athleticism, he gets around the court so well, ran down so many

:04:06.:04:09.

balls that I think Andy Murray might have thought would be winners and

:04:10.:04:14.

ultimately that probably undermined Murray's confident a bit knowing he

:04:15.:04:18.

had six, seven, eight shots every rally, just wasn't up to it. The

:04:19.:04:24.

attitude as well, wasn't it, would he get a double murders towards the

:04:25.:04:28.

end, he just got better and better. This is a guy who seems happy to

:04:29.:04:32.

grind it out in the qualifiers, a long way from home, a bit of Aussie

:04:33.:04:35.

grit, they have to travel from the word go, that is something to do

:04:36.:04:39.

with building that strength of character and we saw it out there,

:04:40.:04:44.

he has Des Tyson, a former player, who travels with him the whole time

:04:45.:04:48.

and keeps his feet on the ground. He is a man who expect success for the

:04:49.:04:52.

work he has done and now he is getting it. It was just one of those

:04:53.:04:56.

days the other day, no matter where he hit the ball it was the right

:04:57.:05:01.

place, in about a 15 minute period where Murray could have come back,

:05:02.:05:20.

Jordan Rhodes a little bit of luck, played great, I didn't realise he

:05:21.:05:25.

served as well that, so this is what you have to be to be a top 100

:05:26.:05:28.

player, that is the target, which makes it even more amazing that the

:05:29.:05:31.

guys at the top of the game have stayed there for so long, because

:05:32.:05:33.

they have to resist these blokes 35 weeks of the year. It was great to

:05:34.:05:36.

see Kokkinakis back, he was such a great talent when he burst on the

:05:37.:05:39.

scene and it is nice to have that style of tennis back here. Exactly

:05:40.:05:41.

right, he is an aggressive player with a really nice personality, you

:05:42.:05:44.

can see there is some depth to the guy and it will be interesting to

:05:45.:05:47.

see today how he recovers from that long match against Routledge, and

:05:48.:05:49.

with all of the niggling injuries he has had, who knows if any of them

:05:50.:05:54.

will be aggravated. And he is such a popular guy, Kokkinakis, he came off

:05:55.:05:58.

court and there were 200 text messages saying well done when he

:05:59.:06:03.

beat Raonic. In the live tennis now, Marin Cilic

:06:04.:06:09.

is in charge of this match. Break of serve up 4-3 and serving. Let's join

:06:10.:06:13.

our commentators, John Lloyd is alongside Andrew Cotter.

:06:14.:06:19.

Far from one-way traffic in the second set but Cilic just doing

:06:20.:06:27.

enough. The first set was chasing experience for that man.

:06:28.:07:15.

Cilic holds. Might well be his year again. A lot of big names going,

:07:16.:07:30.

still some serious contenders of course, Berdych and Dimmock Rob,

:07:31.:07:35.

Muller is such a dangerous player, Lopes of course. We talk of the big

:07:36.:07:41.

names that have fallen but because there is such depth in the

:07:42.:07:49.

tournament, that doesn't end it. Kozlov serving to stay in the match.

:07:50.:08:01.

You have to look at this scoreline, Kozlov has fed right into Cilic's

:08:02.:08:04.

pattern, it has been very comfortable for him. Having said

:08:05.:08:16.

that, the last two errors on his backhand, he has been awesome today,

:08:17.:08:22.

Cilic, particularly on the forehand side, it has been a devastating

:08:23.:08:28.

shot. He has been hitting winner after winner.

:08:29.:08:39.

We saw nothing to suggest Steve Johnson had not been operating at

:08:40.:08:43.

full capacity and yet this 19-year-old blew him away in the

:08:44.:08:50.

second and third sets but today he has had nothing to trouble Marin

:08:51.:08:52.

Cilic. One of those players, Kozlov, who is

:08:53.:09:28.

trying to make the transition from a very, very successful junior,

:09:29.:09:32.

reached a couple of boys grand slam juniors, two senior. The winner here

:09:33.:09:37.

will play the former world number one junior Donald Young.

:09:38.:10:19.

Another hold for Kozlov. Far better in this second set, it still

:10:20.:10:30.

probably will not be enough. Again, talking about the transition from

:10:31.:10:34.

junior to senior, a lot of it is the physical development as well. Kozlov

:10:35.:10:38.

still looks young, you look at pictures of him a couple of years

:10:39.:10:42.

ago, a little bit chubby and looked very, very young. He is now 19,

:10:43.:10:46.

playing on the senior tour but you can still see he will develop

:10:47.:10:50.

physically a whole lot more. At the moment he is operating on a power

:10:51.:10:55.

level below Cilic. This is the sort of match that, if he loses this next

:10:56.:10:59.

game and loses the match, it is the sort of thing that he will sit down

:11:00.:11:03.

with his coaching team, they will look at the tape and just to see the

:11:04.:11:07.

difference of pace, where his depth has not been good enough today, has

:11:08.:11:11.

not been able to keep Cilic pushed back at all, he has allowed Cilic to

:11:12.:11:18.

dominate the vast majority of these rallies, has not hurt Cilic in any

:11:19.:11:22.

way, and this is a learning experience for him. Marin Cilic, he

:11:23.:11:26.

is so aggressive, right from the first point. His coach I'm sure will

:11:27.:11:32.

just about give him ten out of ten, the only thing would be his first

:11:33.:11:35.

serve percentage that he would like to bump up a bit but other than that

:11:36.:11:45.

he has been absolutely awesome. And again we have been talking about it

:11:46.:11:52.

a little bit in this match, Bjorkman there in the black baseball cap,

:11:53.:11:55.

disguised as a camera, but who will be the contenders for the men's

:11:56.:11:59.

singles at Wimbledon, and Marin Cilic has to be up there, the way

:12:00.:12:03.

the men's draw is, pretty open this year with the way things are going.

:12:04.:12:10.

You have to put him in the mix. Just over an hour on court, the sun

:12:11.:12:16.

disappears for a moment, Marin Cilic serving for a place in the

:12:17.:12:17.

quarterfinals. You are right in what you say, John,

:12:18.:13:32.

as well, not much time to talk about it now, but he is the most

:13:33.:13:36.

overlooked grand slam champion, his US open victory a few years ago now.

:13:37.:13:42.

There it is, Victor Riu, short, sharp, ruthless display from Marin

:13:43.:14:10.

Cilic. Seeing off one of the future stars, perhaps, of the game, but you

:14:11.:14:16.

see the contrast across the net, a T-shaped perhaps but a man against a

:14:17.:14:19.

boy today on Centre Court, Marin Cilic the former champion here -- a

:14:20.:14:25.

cliche perhaps. Every chance he will go on and win this title again,

:14:26.:14:30.

Marin Cilic safely through to the quarterfinals. Cilic and his coach

:14:31.:14:41.

will have seen that performance that Kozlov produced against Steve

:14:42.:14:43.

Johnson in coming through and there will have been no complacency, he

:14:44.:14:47.

was very quickly out of the box, Marin Cilic and Kozlov, from the

:14:48.:14:52.

start, looked a bit uneasy. Did get things together a little bit more in

:14:53.:14:59.

the second set but, again, for Kozlov it is a step forward, all

:15:00.:15:06.

part of the development, to win a match here or there at ten 80p level

:15:07.:15:13.

event lifts the rankings. -- at an ATP level event. But in the first of

:15:14.:15:24.

the matches on centre court today, it has been a victory for Marin

:15:25.:15:31.

Cilic and what a victory, through to play Donald Young in the

:15:32.:15:39.

quarterfinals. Twice a finalist here, he won in 2012 in the final

:15:40.:15:44.

against David Nalbandian when it all went wrong for the Argentinian and

:15:45.:15:49.

he was disqualified, then in 2013 lost to Andy Murray. Very good

:15:50.:15:52.

chance he will go all the way to the final again, looked very, very

:15:53.:15:55.

impressive today, Marin Cilic. Through to the last eight. A fairly

:15:56.:16:06.

one-sided victory. Just started to miss a couple of shops in the second

:16:07.:16:10.

set but his forehand so impressive throughout. His coach, a little

:16:11.:16:20.

clench of the post, job done for his man. As we have been talking about,

:16:21.:16:29.

he is the highest seed left in the draw, Marin Cilic, seed number four

:16:30.:16:33.

but Murray, Wawrinka, Routledge, those men above them have gone. I

:16:34.:16:38.

wave and a smile and he is safely through and ready to give his

:16:39.:16:43.

thoughts to John Inverdale. Congratulations, that was a ruthless

:16:44.:16:48.

display. Yes, I felt good from the start of the match, I was returning

:16:49.:16:52.

well, I was making the most of the balls that were coming, obviously

:16:53.:16:58.

serving well is the key on grass and I was doing that well today. Is the

:16:59.:17:03.

talk in the locker room when you get a tournament like this where the big

:17:04.:17:07.

names keep falling day after day, is that a topic of conversation and you

:17:08.:17:12.

think, it could be me today? Not really, it happens quite often,

:17:13.:17:16.

especially as we play so many tournaments, it is very rare that

:17:17.:17:21.

always the top seed are going through, so it is not easy,

:17:22.:17:26.

especially in a tournament like this with so many great players, great

:17:27.:17:30.

grasp players, and one of the first weeks on grass, it is always very

:17:31.:17:36.

tricky, so I am trying to always focus a lot on players like Kozlov

:17:37.:17:43.

today, a very tricky young player, nothing to lose when he comes out

:17:44.:17:49.

and you have to be ready. He is obviously one of the young up and

:17:50.:17:53.

coming stars of the game, 11 years ago you were in that situation. When

:17:54.:17:57.

you walked on court here to play your first ever match here against

:17:58.:18:01.

Tim Henman. That was ten years ago, I was feeling quite old when you

:18:02.:18:07.

said 11, but it was an amazing experience, I learned a lot at those

:18:08.:18:11.

matches when I was playing here, especially with Tim. It was just an

:18:12.:18:19.

amazing experience for me and it helped me a lot for the upcoming

:18:20.:18:25.

weeks and the rest of my career. You are being modest, because you beat

:18:26.:18:29.

him! Of course, I was playing very well but day, grass suits me well.

:18:30.:18:33.

We will see you in a couple of days' time.

:18:34.:18:38.

Thank you. Through to the quarterfinals, former champion Marin

:18:39.:18:43.

Cilic. Look who is here, we are delighted to welcome Dennis, great

:18:44.:18:46.

match last night which Andrew watched against Tomas Berdych, sadly

:18:47.:18:50.

you lost in three sets but you must have been proud of the way you

:18:51.:18:55.

played? Yes, incredible match, disappointing to lose but it was fun

:18:56.:18:59.

to be out there, the crowd was so loud, it was a really fun match, toe

:19:00.:19:06.

to toe up until the end. Tomas Berdych DECC is a great player and

:19:07.:19:10.

it is a privilege to be competing with these guys. You looked at home

:19:11.:19:15.

on the big stage there. When I played against Kyle I was not sure

:19:16.:19:19.

what to expect with the crowd but I got pretty comfortable and my next

:19:20.:19:29.

match with Tomas so I was pretty comfortable. You have got a big

:19:30.:19:35.

game, haven't you? Yes, I grew up playing like this, my mum taught me

:19:36.:19:42.

to play like this. For me, I always want to be the aggressor, no matter

:19:43.:19:46.

who I am playing against, and that is what I try to do against Tomas

:19:47.:19:51.

yesterday. Your mum says you have to keep attacking, you kept getting

:19:52.:19:54.

logged by older kids but she kept saying keep going! Yes, especially

:19:55.:19:59.

when you are pretty small still and everyone back then was just lobbying

:20:00.:20:02.

me but she told me to just keep going and one day I would grow and

:20:03.:20:07.

they would not be able to pass me any more so it is really credit to

:20:08.:20:11.

her. Have you always had that serve you have got? Where did you learn

:20:12.:20:15.

that? That first serve you hit four and eight nearly went over his head,

:20:16.:20:22.

95 mph! The kick serve, I really have to give credit to Marty, we

:20:23.:20:25.

worked on that during the clay season, it was one of the main

:20:26.:20:29.

things we focused on so I think the clay season helped me place by serve

:20:30.:20:35.

a lot better and other aspects of my game, but I have been really

:20:36.:20:39.

focusing on my serve my whole career. Being a lefty it is one of

:20:40.:20:44.

my main aspects. Great to have that kick out wide to the deuce court

:20:45.:20:47.

because it keeps people honest, they expected to slide down the middle.

:20:48.:20:56.

You are only young still. 18? I turned 18 a couple of months ago. I

:20:57.:21:00.

am still learning about my game, still learning what I can do, what I

:21:01.:21:04.

can't do, it is new experiences for me and every day I am learning a

:21:05.:21:08.

little bit more about myself. Are you enjoying life on the tour? So

:21:09.:21:14.

far it has been really great, a lot of fun, a tough job but it has got

:21:15.:21:19.

its positives and I am really excited to have a chance to play

:21:20.:21:25.

well in the main draw. Yes, the wild card announced yesterday, when did

:21:26.:21:30.

you hear about that? Two days ago I heard, my manager called me and told

:21:31.:21:36.

me. I was really pumped, I am super excited to be back. For me, the

:21:37.:21:41.

dream is to lift the men's Wimbledon trophy so to be back on those courts

:21:42.:21:45.

and having a chance to play there is a dream come true for me. You

:21:46.:21:49.

already have a Wimbledon trophy, we were so impressed with the last

:21:50.:21:53.

year, here you are winning the boys' singles title. It was zero that

:21:54.:22:06.

game, he hit a second serve, he had another second serve, I missed in

:22:07.:22:09.

the bottom of the net, I was praying to God that he would double-fault!

:22:10.:22:15.

Lovely celebrations at the end, then you go and get your trophy, don't

:22:16.:22:22.

you? Exactly. So nice, happy memories. You have grown a bit since

:22:23.:22:26.

then, you have put on a few muscles since then! I grew physically, I

:22:27.:22:31.

have got a lot stronger, that is one of the reasons I can compete with

:22:32.:22:35.

guys like Kyle and Tomas this year, I tried to focus on improving

:22:36.:22:39.

physically and it has really helped me. Who did you add my growing up,

:22:40.:22:47.

Roger Federer? For sure, yeah, I always wanted to play like him,

:22:48.:22:52.

being aggressive, and also off the court he was such a gentleman, I

:22:53.:22:58.

always wanted to be just like him on and off the court, being a really

:22:59.:23:02.

nice guy and being so classy. Have you played him? I have practised

:23:03.:23:11.

with him a couple of times. Wow. I want to play him but hopefully not

:23:12.:23:17.

at Wimbledon! Agreed, he is pretty good on grass! He has got a couple

:23:18.:23:24.

of titles! He brought you in because he wanted someone to throw some

:23:25.:23:29.

lefty serves at him? Yes, a couple of years ago he played Feliciano

:23:30.:23:32.

Lopez in the semifinals, I warned him up and he won the match that

:23:33.:23:37.

day, lost in the finals but I didn't warm him up that day so it was OK! I

:23:38.:23:43.

know what he was doing, he wanted to take a close look at this serve so

:23:44.:23:46.

that in a couple of years' time, he has seen a few juniors come through

:23:47.:23:50.

in his time! Going back to the Rogers cup in Canada, you got a wild

:23:51.:23:55.

card for that, Marty was telling me that you wanted it, did you request

:23:56.:24:01.

to play? Wild card at 17 years old, you wanted to play, no matter who

:24:02.:24:05.

you played, you wanted to play the night match? I live to play for

:24:06.:24:09.

these moments on the big stage in front of so many people, I love

:24:10.:24:12.

playing in front of people and showing them so I wanted the shot to

:24:13.:24:19.

play on Centre Court... Which you got. I played Nick Kyrgios, I got

:24:20.:24:27.

two matches on centre court and it was a great time for me. I really

:24:28.:24:33.

had fun. It is our whole learning experience, but do you enjoyed

:24:34.:24:36.

travelling as well? It is difficult changing hotels every week, changing

:24:37.:24:42.

countries all the time, but if I didn't enjoy it I wouldn't be able

:24:43.:24:46.

to do it, it is part of the lifestyle and you have to accept it,

:24:47.:24:50.

I like visiting new cities, new tournaments, it is always

:24:51.:24:55.

fascinating. It is lovely to see you here and playing so well, we see

:24:56.:25:06.

such huge future and it is lovely for us to see such a different side

:25:07.:25:10.

because the last time we saw you was the Davis Cup, such a horrific

:25:11.:25:12.

accident... Here is a happy reminder! We know it is over but

:25:13.:25:16.

that moment there, you knew you had made a mistake, what were your

:25:17.:25:21.

feelings? To be honest, I thought I was done with tennis for a while. It

:25:22.:25:26.

is so difficult to bounce back from a moment like this and I had a lot

:25:27.:25:30.

of people helping me out, helping me through this, it was not only tough

:25:31.:25:33.

on me but on my family, on anyone that was close to me, but I really

:25:34.:25:39.

had people helping me get through this and locally he was very good

:25:40.:25:43.

about it as well. Ten minutes after in the locker room he was kind of

:25:44.:25:48.

joking about it, so he was really good about it and ironically we

:25:49.:25:53.

actually kind of became friends from that.

:25:54.:25:57.

I have heard that, which is nice. We text each other so it has been

:25:58.:26:01.

pretty good. A life changing experience to have to go through

:26:02.:26:05.

that for someone so young. Of course, it really hit me because I

:26:06.:26:10.

was just coming from juniors, just starting pros so I had to mature a

:26:11.:26:14.

lot faster than necessary but to be honest I think it has kind of help

:26:15.:26:18.

to me, it has really helped me improve, I stay much calmer on court

:26:19.:26:23.

now and I just feel like a much more mature person on and off the court

:26:24.:26:29.

now. So are your family coming over, are they here? I hope so, they are

:26:30.:26:34.

not here yet, I hope my mum will come, she has her own little club

:26:35.:26:38.

and she is running a summer camp and struggling to find coaches to

:26:39.:26:47.

replace during Wimbledon. Where is that, Toronto? Yes, but hopefully we

:26:48.:26:53.

can find someone to replace her and she can come and watch me, because I

:26:54.:26:57.

know it is a dream for her to come and watch me. Absolutely, to see you

:26:58.:27:02.

walking out at Wimbledon, imagine how special that will be from when

:27:03.:27:06.

she started you at such a young age. What are your plans now? I am going

:27:07.:27:20.

to sign up for a wild card, I requested a wild card into

:27:21.:27:26.

qualifying but I'm not expecting anything, I have already been

:27:27.:27:31.

privileged to have got two wild cards so I'm not pushing my luck and

:27:32.:27:34.

I'm really thankful for those wild cards but it is quite a gap so it is

:27:35.:27:44.

good to play another event before the big show. Such a big sport and

:27:45.:27:48.

it demands are lot on these players and it is lovely, Dennis, that you

:27:49.:27:52.

called the club today to say, I want to repay you for my wild card, if

:27:53.:27:56.

you want me to do some media work and promote the tournament, so hats

:27:57.:28:00.

off to you for doing that. I like that very much, he is not the only

:28:01.:28:04.

Canadian kid we will have to get used to over the next few years

:28:05.:28:11.

because your friend... I want you to say it! Shapovalov! I have been

:28:12.:28:24.

commentating this week, I have even been asking in the players' tent...

:28:25.:28:30.

Ie even played the ATP pronunciation to him! What is the name of your

:28:31.:28:37.

friend? Felix. He is 16 years old. He will

:28:38.:29:00.

be incredible, he will win a slam or two in his day. Honestly, I know he

:29:01.:29:06.

is my best friend, but I have never seen someone as talented as him, it

:29:07.:29:11.

is unbelievable how professional he is, how hard he works, he will be a

:29:12.:29:16.

great player one day so look out for him. We will indeed, and we will

:29:17.:29:21.

certainly keep our eyes on you as well, congratulations for a great

:29:22.:29:23.

tournament and all the best for Eastbourne and Wimbledon. Thank you,

:29:24.:29:28.

I appreciate that. You have got some work now to get into the commentary

:29:29.:29:32.

box! We are now ready for our next match out on Centre Court, Jordan

:29:33.:29:37.

Thompson, conqueror of Andy Murray, against Sam Querrey, so Andrew will

:29:38.:29:41.

head his way, Peter Fleming is there. This is certainly a very

:29:42.:29:46.

different match for Jordan Thompson from Andy Murray to Sam Querrey?

:29:47.:29:54.

COMMENTATOR: It certainly is. Jordan Thompson, 23 years of age, will play

:29:55.:30:01.

Sam Querrey, who one year, in 2010, Querrey now very much a veteran, 29

:30:02.:30:07.

years old, he has had his ups and downs over the years but seems to be

:30:08.:30:12.

on an upward path right now. He has played some terrific matches, he

:30:13.:30:17.

beat Nadal in a memorable final. Querrey, obviously a daunting figure

:30:18.:30:26.

on grass, will start it off. Interesting, very first point,

:30:27.:30:48.

Querrey challenging Thompson, going out wide with a second serve. It

:30:49.:30:52.

didn't pay off that time, but maybe down the road.

:30:53.:31:22.

Really savvy point played by the American. Thompson showing us some

:31:23.:31:29.

of the court coverage ability that paid off so well for him against

:31:30.:31:31.

Murray. Oh, well left. Terrific return of

:31:32.:32:14.

serve. Thompson appears to be seeing the ball beautifully. Of course,

:32:15.:32:20.

Querrey with one of the more dominant service in the game. A

:32:21.:32:23.

couple of break points for the Australian to start.

:32:24.:32:50.

Hello, Peter. Young Mr Castle has joined us. It is windy out there.

:32:51.:33:08.

Nice plan B from Querrey. Of course, his serve and forehand combination

:33:09.:33:13.

is as devastating as just about any in the game, so for him to be able

:33:14.:33:17.

to back that up with a drop shot now and again, so effective.

:33:18.:33:54.

Forgive me if you have already given this, Peter, but just looking at Sam

:33:55.:34:01.

Querrey putts-mac form this year, 28 in the world now, but looking pretty

:34:02.:34:08.

good having one a tournament earlier in the year, beating Nick Kyrgios

:34:09.:34:17.

and Rafael Nadal, as Sam Querrey did to win in Acapulco. He had that

:34:18.:34:23.

victory against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last year and a title

:34:24.:34:28.

here, yet we don't talk about him that much. He's not one of the

:34:29.:34:33.

glamour figures. Gets the job done. He's such a low key figure, isn't

:34:34.:34:41.

he? But hugely impressed with Jordan Thompson, the way he plays the game,

:34:42.:34:49.

the way he hustles. He will make an opponent's life difficult.

:34:50.:35:09.

It will be interesting to see if Thompson can serve as well all be as

:35:10.:35:15.

effective on serve today as he was against Murray the other day whether

:35:16.:35:20.

perhaps that was just an off returning day for Andy. We will see.

:35:21.:35:36.

Yes, that's the big change in Sam Querrey. His backhand always was a

:35:37.:35:43.

run-of-the-mill shot, something he would do in between hitting

:35:44.:35:47.

forehands. But it has become a weapon now. He really hits the two

:35:48.:35:50.

hander well and confidently. You can hear the noise of the

:35:51.:36:10.

flagpole ropes, the wires. And it affected that, certainly it

:36:11.:36:11.

effective that ball toss. That's a perfect reaction. Wow. Very

:36:12.:36:41.

sharp angle. He's not the tallest man. He's no John Isner.

:36:42.:36:53.

That's a tough way to play, against Sam Querrey, if you are just going

:36:54.:37:40.

to bump the ball back and try to defend. You have got your work cut

:37:41.:37:45.

out for you. Jordan Thompson hasn't won a point when he has missed his

:37:46.:37:52.

first serve. Picking up on what Peter Fleming is saying.

:37:53.:38:02.

This is very unhelpful for Jordan Thompson as he attempts to stave off

:38:03.:38:05.

another break point. You could have been watching this

:38:06.:38:22.

man and Denis Shapovalov playing each other in Surbiton just a couple

:38:23.:38:29.

of weeks ago. A Challenger, that one by Jordan Thompson. He made the

:38:30.:38:36.

final and lost their two a Japanese player with real ability, Yuichi

:38:37.:38:43.

Sugita. Oh, boy, that was a chance. Querrey

:38:44.:38:58.

just a little bit slow getting out of the way of the body serve.

:38:59.:39:40.

He's a tough man to pass, he's an even tougher man to lob. The old

:39:41.:39:52.

skyhook there. I thought you would like that, this was the shot of the

:39:53.:39:59.

old Los Angeles Laker 's, wasn't it? Jimmy Connors was the first man to

:40:00.:40:03.

popularise that in tennis, wasn't he?

:40:04.:40:17.

Tough conditions. A lot more blustery than it has been all week.

:40:18.:40:54.

Too tough service games, one for each player in this second round

:40:55.:41:02.

match. We have had hole matches where we have seen less break point

:41:03.:41:08.

than that but five in total have come gone. This is quite an

:41:09.:41:15.

intriguing match, Jordan Thompson versus Sam Querrey, the former

:41:16.:41:18.

champion here. Jordan Thompson he defeated Andy Murray in round one.

:41:19.:41:27.

Oh, and he has used the wind beautifully there. Hitting against

:41:28.:41:31.

the wind. Can afford to give it a little extra height. The ball

:41:32.:41:32.

stopped dead once it got up there. And you know, Andrew, understandable

:41:33.:41:51.

for those at home to think, well, we have seen five break points in the

:41:52.:41:54.

first two games. This could be great, we will see lots of breaks.

:41:55.:41:58.

Often it doesn't work out that well. A player says a couple of break

:41:59.:42:06.

points and grows in confidence then doesn't face any for quite some

:42:07.:42:07.

time. Let's see how that pans out. I enjoyed your tat with Shapovalov.

:42:08.:42:46.

Did you actually asking, is that how you pronounce your name? It sounds

:42:47.:42:52.

counterintuitive. It was a test, it was like being on mastermind but

:42:53.:42:58.

rather than Humphreys, it was Sue Barker the inquisitorial. Apparently

:42:59.:43:01.

I got it right, Howard said Shapovalov. That surely must be

:43:02.:43:11.

Anglicised in some way. When you have got four syllables in your

:43:12.:43:15.

second name, I'm sure you can pull it to whichever way you want. Nice

:43:16.:43:20.

guy, appreciative of his success, humble about his chances going

:43:21.:43:24.

forward, but I think realistically, I think he thinks of himself about

:43:25.:43:30.

-- as a future grand slam champion. There wasn't a hint of arrogance

:43:31.:43:34.

about it, but that is what he's going for. I was very happy to hear

:43:35.:43:39.

him talk way. Absolutely. It sounds like he has got a solid head on his

:43:40.:43:44.

shoulders. And that other guy he was talking about, his great friend,

:43:45.:43:51.

speaking generously about Felix Auger-Aliassime. He is from what I

:43:52.:43:56.

hear 16 years of age, just one challenger, those two could be the

:43:57.:44:05.

basis for a couple of Davis cup team wins. Raonic will become the doubles

:44:06.:44:17.

specialist. Yes, alongside their colleague who is now in his 40s. He

:44:18.:44:22.

is still playing beautifully. It's amazing. I guess, well, he never had

:44:23.:44:26.

any muscles in the first place, so he had none Tim Louise! -- he had

:44:27.:44:31.

none to lose! You are horrible. Oh, that is so irritating for Jordan

:44:32.:44:55.

Thompson. Good work from Sam Querrey. It just caught the end of

:44:56.:45:03.

the bracket here. You just think to yourself, should have died. --

:45:04.:45:13.

should have dived. He's got a really good serve for

:45:14.:45:40.

grass. Very quick motion, difficult to read for the opponent. He has

:45:41.:45:46.

shown already that he has a great slice serve out to Querrey's

:45:47.:45:52.

forehand. Could definitely cover that one more on big points. Yes, I

:45:53.:45:57.

agree with that and he has got the kick to be able to back up this

:45:58.:46:01.

life, that when they're reaching the high backhand side. Yes, so the hope

:46:02.:46:09.

is that the ball toss is slightly different for those two Serbs. If it

:46:10.:46:16.

is the same, then you are up against it, trying to return.

:46:17.:47:00.

And that's what a guy like Sam Querrey does to opponents. Even if

:47:01.:47:07.

he's not that comfortable heating bodies, he forces you to thread the

:47:08.:47:13.

needle. -- not that comfortable heating follies. Thompson probably

:47:14.:47:18.

had a couple of inches either side of Querrey to hit the winner.

:47:19.:47:31.

Everything that could have gone against him in this game has done.

:47:32.:48:13.

That was not a great error, especially when you consider that

:48:14.:48:20.

that was break point. Querrey had to do better putting that ball into

:48:21.:48:21.

play. He's doing a nice job of wrong

:48:22.:48:51.

footing the Aussie. He's had five break points in his

:48:52.:49:42.

opening two service games, Jordan Thompson. Yes, that is out to, so

:49:43.:49:50.

five have come and gone. It does give you a feeling of

:49:51.:50:20.

insecurity, then you come through break points surviving,

:50:21.:50:23.

strengthening. Nice adjustment. No need to over

:50:24.:51:10.

swing on that one because that was great improvisation, racquet face

:51:11.:51:20.

control. Adjustment, split step, just to push through the wall. And

:51:21.:51:26.

another game survived. He's a character, isn't he? A

:51:27.:51:49.

typical Aussie. -- he's a combative character, isn't he?

:51:50.:52:28.

Did Sam Querrey go to southern California college? I don't think he

:52:29.:52:37.

went to college. Did he go straight pro? I think he did. He was a great

:52:38.:52:50.

junior. Cameron Norrie was the number one player in college tennis.

:52:51.:52:55.

I'm not sure if he won the NCA is, but he was certainly favourite.

:52:56.:53:17.

The wind is kind from that direction, Westerly, coming Heathrow

:53:18.:53:25.

and blowing towards central London, and as soon as it gets up there, it

:53:26.:53:31.

picked up the window the clubhouse. It just disappears, left to right as

:53:32.:53:32.

you are looking, down the court. American College still a really good

:53:33.:54:00.

professional for some -- a really good option for some people. If you

:54:01.:54:04.

are not sure if you are good enough to be professional or you're not

:54:05.:54:10.

sure it's for you, a wonderful education and team spirit. Even if

:54:11.:54:16.

you have no education interests, it's a stable environment to

:54:17.:54:19.

training for the next four years. The number of players who are

:54:20.:54:24.

physically or emotionally mature enough to go straight out onto the

:54:25.:54:29.

two, where you get your brains beaten every week, is probably less

:54:30.:54:39.

1% of the players who aspire to one day become professional. So to go

:54:40.:54:42.

into a situation where you have a couple of coaches who are looking

:54:43.:54:45.

after you constantly and working on your game, it is, as you say, a

:54:46.:54:53.

great opportunity. A young man who elected not to go that route and to

:54:54.:54:58.

turn professional is J Clark from Derbyshire, from the city of Derby.

:54:59.:55:06.

He is playing in a challenger in Ilkley this week. He got his first

:55:07.:55:19.

challenger when in Ilkley and is playing against an experienced

:55:20.:55:26.

Ukrainian player now. We will continue to monitor him, as Jade

:55:27.:55:30.

tries to progress. Marcis Willis is playing Sam Groth in the second

:55:31.:55:39.

round. That is after beating the Australian Matt Ebdon. That is all

:55:40.:55:40.

taking place in Ebdon -- in Ilkley. Various dies at the far end with the

:55:41.:56:24.

dark glasses. -- there is Des at the far end in the dark glasses.

:56:25.:56:55.

Wow, that was amazing. That was a virtuoso point. It was slow to get

:56:56.:57:04.

both -- slow to get going, but that volley from Querrey was amazing. And

:57:05.:57:11.

that one, wow. He did that against Murray, didn't he? He'd be a good

:57:12.:57:13.

squash player. I suspect he'd like a game of paddle

:57:14.:57:38.

tennis as well. Old-fashioned skills he is demonstrating here with his

:57:39.:57:40.

racket. Not that time. But a very clever

:57:41.:57:56.

shot from Querrey, forcing him to almost half volley. Check this out,

:57:57.:58:04.

average service game duration, Thomson, 6.5 minutes. Just under

:58:05.:58:10.

pressure. Sam Querrey quicker, but not that easy.

:58:11.:58:34.

Again, Thompson badly needs a first serve or two in here.

:58:35.:58:58.

Oh, Thompson got away with won, because he put that in the middle of

:58:59.:59:05.

the court would not much on it. That is his sick break points saved. Yes,

:59:06.:59:11.

Sam Querrey would very much like to have that shot again. I am not sure

:59:12.:59:16.

if he has a sliced backhand but moving through this with a slice, he

:59:17.:59:22.

couldn't handle. Perhaps the wind moved it, because it was a bit of a

:59:23.:59:24.

mis-hit from him. So important to keep your feet

:59:25.:59:39.

moving when you play in the wind. That is not necessarily one of

:59:40.:59:41.

Querrey's strong points. He is pesky. Yes, if they play this

:59:42.:00:01.

cat and mouse type points, Thompson is going to win the vast majority of

:00:02.:00:06.

them. He is good at this. He moves about three inches off the ground,

:00:07.:00:09.

doesn't he. He is living with the ball.

:00:10.:00:33.

And that was the easiest of his service games! Oh, no, it wasn't!

:00:34.:00:50.

One of the longer ones! Eight minutes 38 seconds. Just seemed

:00:51.:01:01.

really quick because it was so much fun! Good match, this, isn't it? It

:01:02.:01:14.

has come back in. Not quite sure how, but he has done it.

:01:15.:01:26.

He has got the odds on the run. He is just a flat-out good player, Sam

:01:27.:01:57.

Querrey. You have to think, what is it? That is keeping him from being

:01:58.:02:02.

one of the game's best. He has got a great arm. His father

:02:03.:02:48.

was drafted into the major-league baseball. Wonderful service motion

:02:49.:03:02.

so many Americans have. That is one of the huge advantages of playing

:03:03.:03:08.

baseball as a little kid, it is the exact same action used to serve.

:03:09.:03:15.

Virtually every American kid plays baseball. Or at least everyone that

:03:16.:03:25.

like sports. Which is getting less and less. Probably so, probably so.

:03:26.:03:33.

The computer generation we live in, the LTA gave a presentation, the

:03:34.:03:40.

performance director at the LTA earlier this week, it was

:03:41.:03:47.

interesting, across all sports youngsters are playing less, they

:03:48.:03:50.

are less active than they were, a ten year decline we have taken

:03:51.:03:59.

through, and particularly female participation, youngsters playing

:04:00.:04:03.

sport, is going down, even though it is in the national curriculum, so it

:04:04.:04:06.

is a big issue. The computer generation. The LTA, I think, have a

:04:07.:04:14.

participation announcement next week, which I'm quite looking

:04:15.:04:17.

forward to. They are very aware of the problem and doing their best to

:04:18.:04:24.

get tennis racket into the hands of youngsters. Plenty of good work

:04:25.:04:26.

being done there. With a sense of foreboding, Jordan

:04:27.:04:48.

Thompson comes to the line once again. He is under pressure every

:04:49.:04:52.

time he serves. Perhaps the new balls will help him. And perhaps

:04:53.:04:56.

being from that direction as a right-hander, the wind direction is

:04:57.:05:00.

taking it to a place that you actually want to hit it. Nice

:05:01.:05:03.

theory. Again, an opportunity for Querrey to

:05:04.:05:45.

just put a little pressure on Thompson. Second serve was there to

:05:46.:05:46.

be hit. That was a low percentage attempt.

:05:47.:06:32.

Querrey has to believe that the longer the rally goes on he will get

:06:33.:06:36.

a shot to hit that is in the middle of the court, chest high. That time

:06:37.:06:41.

he was a little off-balance, the ball was about knee height, not one

:06:42.:06:44.

that he really wanted to go for a winner on.

:06:45.:07:00.

That one was of the perfect variety, one that was in the middle of the

:07:01.:07:08.

court, time to hit it and really put Thompson under pressure.

:07:09.:07:50.

Thompson's second serve can be awkward because it seems to come in

:07:51.:07:54.

with more action than a lot of players. That one skidded in towards

:07:55.:07:59.

Querrey where the second serve often skip the other way.

:08:00.:08:17.

A quick victory for Marin Cilic on this court today against Stefan

:08:18.:08:28.

Kozlov. The American number two, Sam Querrey, in action here. Strange,

:08:29.:08:40.

really, to talk about the American number two is ranked 28th in the

:08:41.:08:46.

world. Back in the day the Americans had six, seven, eight players in the

:08:47.:08:48.

top ten. I was saying American number two on

:08:49.:09:08.

this court, but I'm just checking the rankings now to see. Number one

:09:09.:09:17.

American at the moment, Jack Sock, number 18.

:09:18.:09:36.

Isner at 21, Steve Johnson 25. So, American number four. Isner, Johnson

:09:37.:09:46.

and Querrey have been near each other for the last... Well, months,

:09:47.:09:50.

anyway. That is why coaches say, don't

:09:51.:10:04.

approach crosscourt, because Querrey just didn't have time to get across

:10:05.:10:06.

to cover the down the line pats. Had his 30-30 opportunity. Sam

:10:07.:10:54.

Querrey advancing to a 5-4 lead after 14 minutes here. Looking

:10:55.:10:58.

forward to seeing Benassi Kokkinakis coming up later on trying to back up

:10:59.:11:12.

his victory over Raonic. He plays Daniil Medvedev of Russia who, I

:11:13.:11:16.

have to confess, I haven't seen played too much. This is the next

:11:17.:11:21.

generation that they like to talk about, they like to build up the

:11:22.:11:25.

next generation in the PR and press send but until they get a result it

:11:26.:11:29.

doesn't matter what campaign of awareness you have. But they are

:11:30.:11:42.

getting results now. And a couple of guys who are not technically next

:11:43.:11:45.

generation, Dominic Thiem and Nick Kyrgios, both 22 now a few young

:11:46.:11:54.

guys making their way into the upper echelons of the game but still no

:11:55.:12:01.

one yet to challenge the big four, if you will. Just turned 23 this

:12:02.:12:08.

year. Lucas Pouille is another one if we are going to get to 23.

:12:09.:12:12.

Looking forward to seeing him play at Wimbledon.

:12:13.:13:59.

So, the pressure squarely on the Aussie's shoulders right now. Two

:14:00.:14:08.

points away from dropping the first set.

:14:09.:14:44.

This will be so frustrating for Sam. Querrey has had so many

:14:45.:14:52.

opportunities, break points, in this set, six. Getting into these rallies

:14:53.:15:01.

and losing them, he will get a little hot between the ears. He is

:15:02.:15:02.

not one to panic on the court. It can become fatiguing, mentally,

:15:03.:15:27.

to have all these break points, frustrating, anyway, to have as many

:15:28.:15:31.

chances as Querrey has and failed to convert them. The good news is his

:15:32.:15:37.

serve has settled down. He is a real defender, Jordan

:15:38.:16:02.

Thompson. His lateral movement is excellent.

:16:03.:16:49.

A lot of firepower in this guy's arsenal.

:16:50.:18:13.

So, Kokkinakis versus Medvedev is our next offering, the third match

:18:14.:18:22.

on Centre Court. Jeremy Chardy, the qualifier, versus Feliciano Lopez,

:18:23.:18:24.

who beat Stan Wawrinka in the first round, that will be number four

:18:25.:18:32.

today but we might be on the red button for that one, all part of it.

:18:33.:18:38.

Two big servers for that, two guys who can power down the first

:18:39.:18:44.

delivery. This has become a tremendous event, hasn't it? It is

:18:45.:18:48.

not just a tennis tournament, they must be congratulated on being the

:18:49.:18:56.

ATP Tour 500 tournament of the year I believe for the fourth year in a

:18:57.:19:02.

row. The players' loud cheer is spectacular, takes up the space of

:19:03.:19:08.

two indoor courts. And Jones up there and John Barrett on the left,

:19:09.:19:09.

Angela Barrett as well. Cannot see what it in John's had

:19:10.:19:24.

there, must be a glass of champagne. Roger Taylor on the left-hand side,

:19:25.:19:32.

Paul Hutchins and Mark Cox. British royalty, isn't it?! Tennis royalty,

:19:33.:19:39.

anyway. And Jones and Angela Mortimer, of course, former

:19:40.:19:43.

Wimbledon champions. The All-England Club has a closed championship de

:19:44.:19:47.

Gea and everybody plays, it is great fun, and I saw a mixed doubles

:19:48.:19:51.

match, Roger playing against Mark Cox in the mixed doubles and they

:19:52.:19:56.

were chatting away, it was wonderful to see. I will not tell you who won,

:19:57.:20:00.

because it really does not matter. And I can't remember.

:20:01.:20:17.

Oh! How did he get away with that?! Thompson had... This is an easy put

:20:18.:20:33.

away that he just sort of dumped back at Querrey, and then won it the

:20:34.:20:36.

hard way. James Keeler performed in the chair

:20:37.:21:33.

like a great conductor before his audience.

:21:34.:22:16.

Right on the edge of the line! It looked like it was going out, it had

:22:17.:22:28.

so much side has been on it. And after it hit, took a dead left turn.

:22:29.:22:34.

Couldn't believe it, managed to get to a tie-break, almost.

:22:35.:22:53.

And it is a tie-break. Excellent set of tennis, 52 minutes played and it

:22:54.:23:00.

will be decided with a break-in. The crowd have enjoyed the tennis. Kind

:23:01.:23:08.

of a classic match, power play, Sam Querrey and the grafter, the

:23:09.:23:14.

grinder, Jordan Thompson, who has chased down so many balls already.

:23:15.:23:33.

UMPIRE: Mr Thompson is challenging a call on the service line. The ball

:23:34.:23:39.

was called in. It was a challenge, he still has four. The call stands.

:23:40.:23:49.

Mr Thompson has three challenges remaining.

:23:50.:25:13.

It has certainly appeared that Jordan Thompson has done most of the

:25:14.:25:21.

running and yet, look, only ten metres between them. Jordan Thompson

:25:22.:25:30.

seems to have been rushed more than Querrey.

:25:31.:25:53.

Well, that was a PowerPoint from Sam Querrey, chipped backhand and then

:25:54.:25:58.

the mistake -- poor point. Again, it is not easy out there. The

:25:59.:26:32.

wind is pretty blustery. You think you are in position to hit the ball,

:26:33.:26:34.

and then it moves. Haven't had any rain here today,

:26:35.:27:25.

there was always that possibility. It has been clouding over a little

:27:26.:27:32.

bit in the last hour or so. The wind picked up about an hour ago as well

:27:33.:27:39.

as this cold front has come through, mercifully. The first three days

:27:40.:27:41.

were boiling hot, much cooler today. Still tops 4% chance of rain or so

:27:42.:28:13.

so I think we are pretty safe in that regard. A lot more comfortable,

:28:14.:28:14.

23 degrees. Oh, of all the balls to miss! The

:28:15.:28:35.

lob was good and we remember the success he had in that direction

:28:36.:28:39.

with a lob early on but Querrey with enough know-how to get the job done.

:28:40.:28:50.

That will ease the tension. Seven aces for Sam Querrey and now a 6-3

:28:51.:28:57.

lead, three set points. Just under an hour of fascinating

:28:58.:29:56.

tennis in this second round match here at Queen's Club, Sam Querrey

:29:57.:30:01.

had the most break points, existing -- exerting the most pressure and it

:30:02.:30:03.

paid off in the end, 7-6. Thompson trying everything that Sam

:30:04.:30:14.

Querrey just too tough in that first set tie-break. We will be back with

:30:15.:30:18.

that match in a moment, but next on court, another Aussie out on Centre

:30:19.:30:23.

Court, Thanasi Kokkinakis, who put out Milos Raonic and he let out a

:30:24.:30:26.

massive roar when he won the match point because it meant so much to

:30:27.:30:30.

him to have a big win on the big stage after a torrid time with a

:30:31.:30:34.

spate of injuries. He has been off the tiller for 18 months but at the

:30:35.:30:38.

moment he is fit, well and playing super tennis. He is up against

:30:39.:30:44.

another next-generation player, Dana Medvedev, sixth at six, and they are

:30:45.:30:53.

playing in a special event just before the O2 at the end of this

:30:54.:30:58.

year in Milan. They will be a lot of rule changes, a lot of loud music, a

:30:59.:31:03.

very different style of tennis later this year in Milan. They are next on

:31:04.:31:09.

court, the 221-year-olds, we are looking forward to that, to seeing

:31:10.:31:13.

the new stars emerging, and then to be over 30s. Chardy against

:31:14.:31:21.

Feliciano Lopez. They meant just -- they met just last week in

:31:22.:31:22.

Stuttgart, with Lopez winning. Jordan Thompson as pesky as ever.

:31:23.:31:45.

Nearly, very nearly, but Sam Querrey, but ultimately you would

:31:46.:31:52.

have to say that Sam Querrey just a bit more game in the first set

:31:53.:32:04.

there. I must apologise to Sue Barker. I was just tucking into a

:32:05.:32:08.

lemon thyme and garlic chicken ciabatta, so you caught me unawares.

:32:09.:32:17.

What we have here is a lot less blue sky than we had earlier in the week.

:32:18.:32:24.

Windy conditions. People who had tickets for today would have been

:32:25.:32:28.

expecting bigger star names, but it is interesting to watch this group

:32:29.:32:33.

of youngsters play. We can add Bernard Tomic to that. He is about

:32:34.:32:41.

43 in the world at the moment. Kyle Edmund as well.

:32:42.:32:50.

The real thrill is to see if any of those guys are potential world

:32:51.:32:54.

number ones. The chances are, these next James

:32:55.:33:40.

Guy 's will outlast him. -- this next generation guys. That is what

:33:41.:33:46.

happens when you go out wide. The court is still greenish and here you

:33:47.:33:51.

can see Thompson just losing his footing.

:33:52.:34:11.

OK, so Sam Querrey continuing to exert this pressure here. And with

:34:12.:34:20.

the momentum from the first set tie-break win, there is a 15-30

:34:21.:34:22.

opportunity. Oh, he has played him back in again,

:34:23.:34:41.

just like you did with that volley. He fed the Querrey backhand and

:34:42.:34:44.

there's passing shot brings up to back points. Yes, and again, it

:34:45.:34:49.

looked as though the wind caught him out. He didn't quite adjust well

:34:50.:34:55.

enough and that perhaps was the only shot he could play.

:34:56.:35:20.

Well, we haven't seen him unleash on ground strokes too often today. That

:35:21.:35:25.

one certainly shows he can. Wow, he used the wind to perfection.

:35:26.:36:16.

Look where that ball bounced. CHEERING

:36:17.:37:04.

APPLAUSE So, to more break points saved.

:37:05.:37:21.

Sam Querrey has had eight break points that he has failed to

:37:22.:37:30.

convert. Jordan Thompson just had those two. At least he is set up

:37:31.:37:33.

otherwise he would be very frustrated. Yes, and because it has

:37:34.:37:41.

been such smooth sailing on Querrey's sir, I think he will be

:37:42.:37:44.

enjoying his position right now, knowing that, come on, keep the

:37:45.:37:50.

pressure on. You are bound to break through on one of these chances.

:37:51.:38:16.

Well, the drop shot was an ambitious attempt. He didn't quite pull it

:38:17.:38:19.

off. Interesting. The hit and charge

:38:20.:40:44.

employee from Querrey appeared to catch Thompson unawares.

:40:45.:41:20.

Well, problems here again. Just game after game after game on serve for

:41:21.:41:29.

Jordan Thompson. How will he fight his way out of this one.

:41:30.:42:16.

As he has done so often this week, a couple of first serves bailing

:42:17.:42:20.

Thompson out of trouble. Once again, he gets out of a

:42:21.:43:17.

difficult situation. Houdini. Great stuff. Well done, keeping the second

:43:18.:43:28.

set close. Nice and full here today. I've been up on the balcony. Some of

:43:29.:43:35.

the great former champions up there, dignitaries as well. It's sort of

:43:36.:43:38.

the main function room just behind them there. There's Angela Barrett,

:43:39.:43:45.

Angela Mortimer in the middleware. Stop yawning, John. Angela was the

:43:46.:43:55.

Wimbledon champion three times. And Jones, the 1969 Wimbledon champion

:43:56.:44:01.

as well. And Maria Bueno is there who won 71 singles titles. There is

:44:02.:44:08.

Mark Cox. Who else have we got? Ah, Roger. Mark still crunches his

:44:09.:44:18.

forehand, you know? He is keen. He plays tennis the whole time. He

:44:19.:44:24.

hasn't missed a backhand slice since 1975. With his wife, Sue. And

:44:25.:44:34.

whereas shall we go? Let's get into people's business around here. It's

:44:35.:44:41.

nice looking around the crowd. A great buzz here. Very, very active

:44:42.:44:47.

membership. Some years ago, they celebrated, was that their centenary

:44:48.:44:54.

or that at 70 bed? This club has been a multipurpose sports club for

:44:55.:44:58.

over a century. They used to hold England football multinationals and

:44:59.:45:05.

-- International and rugby internationals here as well.

:45:06.:45:09.

Athletics moved to white city. It was probably one of the first in the

:45:10.:45:12.

world. That's interesting, Jordan Thompson,

:45:13.:45:38.

the old-fashioned chip charge. What you did you play here first? 1976. I

:45:39.:45:46.

think I lost here in the qualifications -- in the qualifiers.

:45:47.:45:52.

77, I think, was my first time in the main draw.

:45:53.:46:14.

You must have won the doubles here? Never. It just never quite suited

:46:15.:46:25.

me. The court was faster, a faster grass court which I didn't like so

:46:26.:46:26.

much. Again, the approach shot, just too

:46:27.:46:58.

short. It's the single biggest change in the game, isn't it, the

:46:59.:47:03.

ability of these guys to pass? Yes, brought on by the strings, the new

:47:04.:47:09.

generation of strings that are used now. It allows players to hit the

:47:10.:47:17.

ball with a lot more spin, and so therefore they get a lot more power

:47:18.:47:20.

on the passing shots. Power with control. Two break points, Jordan

:47:21.:47:26.

Thompson. It's been awhile. Drifted wide. The crowd have loved

:47:27.:47:55.

to the effort and the way he plays. And the fact that if it wasn't for

:47:56.:48:00.

him, they would be watching Andy Murray play doesn't bother them.

:48:01.:48:03.

They are enjoying a good match. It's as well as it has been all week in

:48:04.:48:08.

here. There must be 8000 people in this arena. No, 9000... Oh, you'd

:48:09.:48:15.

think it is not entirely full? Not totally. I think probably 9000.

:48:16.:48:22.

9542, the capacity now. Just waiting for the ball to come

:48:23.:48:48.

back to him and that time it never did.

:48:49.:49:14.

Oh, Justin. -- oh, just in. How did he get away with that? He was

:49:15.:49:29.

looking at this one in the air after he played the drop shot. Sam could

:49:30.:49:32.

have gone down the line but he didn't. This one here, just, please

:49:33.:49:35.

land. Just starting to fray at the edges a

:49:36.:50:29.

little, isn't he, Querrey? And that's way and he is up a break

:50:30.:51:30.

of serve, 4-1 up in this second Set. We might be going the distance here.

:51:31.:51:38.

Well, this matches the second on Central Court today, and in the

:51:39.:51:46.

first, Marin Cilic went through in straight sets. Marin Cilic three to

:51:47.:51:53.

face Donald Young and it's quite interesting that both Stephan and

:51:54.:51:58.

Donald Young promised so much in the junior ranks, based such successful

:51:59.:52:09.

junior careers, hoping things will happen for young Stefan Kozlov. You

:52:10.:52:16.

feel like the likes of Zverev and Shapovalov really are making their

:52:17.:52:21.

mark on the men's game. We would like to hear your comments on any of

:52:22.:52:28.

the youngsters, any of the next generation who are coming through.

:52:29.:52:36.

Soup, thank you -- so, thank you very much indeed. My sandwiches and

:52:37.:52:45.

getting in the way this time. Incidentally, from Ilkley, J Clarke

:52:46.:52:51.

from Derby picked up his first challenge match when just a couple

:52:52.:52:55.

of days ago and in the second round, won the first set against Ilia

:52:56.:53:00.

Marchenko, a Ukrainian Davis cup player. Marchenko is up a break of

:53:01.:53:05.

serve in the second set. Ilkley, that must take you back?

:53:06.:53:19.

Loved it. Beautiful, beautiful part of the world. It's been awhile but

:53:20.:53:25.

isn't it was on the circuit, you will? Yes. There was one year, a lot

:53:26.:53:34.

of the players camp because it is in the bow of the river there, and a

:53:35.:53:37.

lot of the players were camping and it flooded. I had great sympathy for

:53:38.:53:42.

them from my hotel room. We should also mention the

:53:43.:54:26.

tournament taking place in Birmingham, the Edgbaston Priory

:54:27.:54:29.

event. A match under way at the moment in

:54:30.:55:05.

Birmingham if you want to have a look at that. Petra Kvitova coming

:55:06.:55:10.

back is the story of the week. Yes, so nice to have her back on tour.

:55:11.:56:12.

Starting to make just a view to many errors now, is Sam Querrey. --

:56:13.:56:25.

starting to make just a few too many errors now, is Sam Querrey.

:56:26.:57:32.

Two weeks away, well, less than that now, from the championships that

:57:33.:57:41.

Wimbledon. Novak Djokovic each said that he would very much like to

:57:42.:57:45.

accept a wild card down in Eastbourne. Didn't think that was

:57:46.:57:51.

likely to happen. Not at all. It's a big surprise for me. I don't know,

:57:52.:58:01.

how much does he have to gain from that? But obviously he wants to play

:58:02.:58:05.

matches on grass and I guess ree accustom himself to what it is to

:58:06.:58:13.

think properly on a grass court. Or maybe he just wants to go to

:58:14.:58:17.

Eastbourne, the sun trap of the South. It's lovely. From there, you

:58:18.:58:21.

can reach the Southdown 's, lovely pubs, go for a walk along Beachy

:58:22.:58:27.

head and see the lighthouse. It's glorious down there. Perhaps that is

:58:28.:58:33.

why he is going. And the peer is always worth a look. Used to play

:58:34.:58:37.

the national Junior Championships on the grass court that Eastbourne.

:58:38.:58:43.

Just loved it down there. And what do you think the chances are that in

:58:44.:58:47.

one up his matches, he will be playing through a stiff gale force

:58:48.:58:52.

wind? There is always that at Eastbourne. I haven't seen the

:58:53.:58:58.

forecast for next week. But certainly there is always a fair

:58:59.:59:03.

breeze down there and always you play with the backdrop of the sound

:59:04.:59:09.

of seagulls, which are the sound of dogs -- the size of dogs down there.

:59:10.:59:15.

Never, ever walk with a packet of chips along Eastbourne Pier. They

:59:16.:59:16.

will get you. Thompson has done that a view times

:59:17.:00:23.

today, where he has hit the setup pass very low, forcing Querrey to

:00:24.:00:28.

volley up and then tracks the one falling down. A really nice job.

:00:29.:00:32.

That's not an easy shot for Querrey to have to deal with.

:00:33.:01:23.

I saw him down there, hat and glasses.

:01:24.:02:01.

He did well to step up to the ball this time. Didn't allow Thompson to

:02:02.:02:28.

establish himself at the net. PETER FLEMING: Querrey gets him self

:02:29.:03:48.

into trouble sometimes going down the line, when he's forced to run.

:03:49.:04:22.

Oh, wow! That did catch the line, didn't it? Looks that way. He's got

:04:23.:04:35.

excellent footwork, you see that adjustment?

:04:36.:04:54.

The kick serve should have been enough, to set up the forehand.

:04:55.:05:00.

Yeah, and you think perhaps a short angle or a drop shot back behind

:05:01.:05:06.

Querrey is going to win the point easily. But hindsight, always 2020.

:05:07.:05:46.

He is a throwback of a player, the ability to control the ball and use

:05:47.:06:02.

the racquet head, he has all that. He moves well.

:06:03.:06:33.

And upset. Just the one break of serve. Into the third set we go.

:06:34.:06:47.

SUE BARKER: Yes, this one going the distance, and we will be right back

:06:48.:06:51.

with it, but our summer of tennis continues here at Queen's Club.

:06:52.:06:56.

Tomorrow, we will be on at one o'clock, and we go right through

:06:57.:07:02.

until Sunday. And then we will be in his own from Monday, our coverage

:07:03.:07:06.

starting at two o'clock on Monday. Eight of the world's top ten in

:07:07.:07:13.

action, including Simona Halep and Jo Konta. Also next week, the

:07:14.:07:18.

nerve-racking qualifying for Wimbledon, that will be on the red

:07:19.:07:25.

button. And also online. And of course, all building up to the big

:07:26.:07:27.

one, Wimbledon. And we will have a special

:07:28.:07:42.

documentary to look back at some of the great moments over the years. I

:07:43.:07:45.

have been travelling around for that to interview some of the great

:07:46.:07:50.

champions. Billie Jean King, Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, through to the

:07:51.:07:54.

present day with Andy and Roger. And that will be shown on BBC One, on

:07:55.:08:04.

Sunday. ANDREW CASTLE: So, two interested

:08:05.:08:08.

spectators, David Beckham and his son, 14-year-old

:08:09.:08:28.

Romeo. He's a very keen tennis player, isn't he? So they say!

:08:29.:08:42.

Big hum around this now 9500 seat Centre Court at Queen's Club. And

:08:43.:08:52.

I'm not sure if any tickets have gone on sold so far this week. It

:08:53.:08:54.

has looked packed everyday. It is all very well seeing the big

:08:55.:09:11.

stars of the gameplaying, but if they win three and one, so what?

:09:12.:09:16.

Personally, I would rather see a good, tight match, and that is what

:09:17.:09:19.

this is. STEVE HARMISON: He tries to keep it

:09:20.:09:41.

low so it wasn't in Sam Querrey's hitting zone. Just got it too fine.

:09:42.:09:53.

-- PETER FLEMING. CONNACHT WAY TO START, ADVANTAGE TO

:09:54.:10:15.

SERVE FIRST, FOR MOST PEOPLE. And mentally, Sam Querrey went away a

:10:16.:10:18.

little bit in the second set, but having dropped his serve early on,

:10:19.:10:22.

it is almost as though he was allowed to relax a little bit

:10:23.:10:27.

towards the end of that second set. And now, he's ready once again for a

:10:28.:10:29.

strong assault. It's a ninth break point after this

:10:30.:14:12.

forehand error. He has had some chances - will he take this one?

:14:13.:14:25.

Oh, he HAS got it! That ball just took off! Just an inspirational

:14:26.:14:47.

little bunt return down the line, 132mph first serve, and he got it

:14:48.:14:51.

back. You get an automatic warning for

:14:52.:15:00.

that. And suddenly, 0-30. Yeah, Sam

:15:01.:15:59.

Querrey just bunting that back very short in the court.

:16:00.:16:39.

He knocked Querrey back with the depth of the return. Now, two break

:16:40.:16:56.

points for him. And Sam Querrey is absolutely livid

:16:57.:17:20.

with the game that he played there. He will have been so disappointed

:17:21.:17:23.

with those couple of loose points, especially having just got the break

:17:24.:17:28.

of serve. Jordan Thompson, back in it. Old habits die hard. On that

:17:29.:17:41.

last point, Querrey we had a real good opportunity to take that ball

:17:42.:17:46.

out of the air, when Thompson was still trying to get back into

:17:47.:17:50.

position. But of course, Querrey allowed it to drop and gave Thompson

:17:51.:17:55.

chance to recover his position, and he was able to track down the

:17:56.:18:03.

forehand. His movement is such a major strength, isn't it? It is, he

:18:04.:18:09.

moves very well. Very good balance. He's quick, he anticipates well. And

:18:10.:18:17.

it is his ninth match on grass, Australians don't grow up on grass

:18:18.:18:22.

like they used to tickle he just seems very well-suited to. He played

:18:23.:18:28.

in the, Challenger, he played in the qualifiers here and lost in the

:18:29.:18:32.

final round, that would have been his second match. So, five in

:18:33.:18:39.

Surbiton, two in the qualifying, lost one, got in as a lucky loser,

:18:40.:18:45.

beat Andy Murray, so this is number nine. And he's in the main draw at

:18:46.:18:49.

Wimbledon. It's a big advantage to have played a week or two on this

:18:50.:18:55.

surface, if you're playing against a guy who is playing his first or

:18:56.:19:01.

second match on it. With new tennis balls, Jordan Thompson to serve.

:19:02.:20:16.

That was the shot that you noticed was Querrey's most improved right at

:20:17.:20:25.

the start. We haven't actually seen him using it to great effect today.

:20:26.:20:32.

He has hit a couple of good winners, but...

:20:33.:20:46.

Well worth a challenge buckle UMPIRE: The ball was called out. Is

:20:47.:21:00.

outside edge. If ever you need an illustration of

:21:01.:21:20.

the value of Hawk-Eye, that was absolutely crucial.

:21:21.:21:55.

He's entertaining to watch, he tracks down a lot of balls.

:21:56.:22:50.

Oh, Sam went over awkwardly, as did Kyrgios the other day, when he had

:22:51.:22:59.

to pull out. This was another example of the split step and push.

:23:00.:23:09.

Luckily for up Querrey, he landed more on his knee double the inside

:23:10.:23:16.

of his leg. That was what did Kyrgios in. Three breaks of serve in

:23:17.:23:21.

the first four game of this decider. Not sure he needed to play that.

:23:22.:23:52.

Perhaps he did. Yeah, it was going to be very close, wasn't it?

:23:53.:24:15.

This is one of the things which is going to go in the NextGen finals -

:24:16.:25:00.

there will be no nets. Two mis-hit shots in a row from

:25:01.:26:20.

Thompson, the first one somehow luckily made it in - not the second.

:26:21.:26:41.

From 0-40 back to deuce. Yeah, good tactic. It wasn't the most

:26:42.:26:53.

convincing first volley, but he got away with it.

:26:54.:27:00.

UMPIRE: Advantage, Querrey. ANDREW CASTLE: 14 of those, the

:27:01.:27:10.

first one in this deciding set. And that is a big game and a a cold,

:27:11.:27:27.

from 0-40 down to back up the break of serve. Now, Jordan Thompson, we

:27:28.:27:33.

know he's got the heart, but he's going to need it now. This would be

:27:34.:27:38.

a massive disappointment for him, having beaten Andy Murray in the

:27:39.:27:44.

first round, Andy does not lose on grass too much! But surely a

:27:45.:28:00.

different set of circumstances. The 2010 champion now has the chance to

:28:01.:28:04.

polish the game off, and you would expect him to go on from here.

:28:05.:28:11.

Absolutely. Querrey certainly has the game to finish things off here,

:28:12.:28:17.

but stranger things have happened. He beat Mardy Fish back in 2010 in

:28:18.:28:33.

the final. The average length of a professional tennis career, how long

:28:34.:28:37.

do you think that is? Well, it depends at what level. For a top-10

:28:38.:28:42.

player, he's there for 12 years or so. But if it is a top 100 player,

:28:43.:28:50.

it might be only three. What is it? Well, across the whole piece, it is

:28:51.:28:58.

one year. People have a go, have a look and realise that it's going to

:28:59.:29:01.

be impossible, or not available. It would be a more interesting stat

:29:02.:29:27.

if you said, any player that for one week was in the top 100, how long

:29:28.:29:33.

was their average career? I agree. looking at his phone thinking, how

:29:34.:29:45.

am I going to work that out? I would have thought it is probably two or

:29:46.:29:56.

three years on average. Now, this should be taken from the air. It

:29:57.:30:02.

won't be an easy catch. One hand, one bounce. Nicely done.

:30:03.:30:26.

Just sign is that it might be going away from Jordan Thompson at this

:30:27.:30:41.

point. So how much game does he have left in the tank here?

:30:42.:30:55.

It hit the net cord and with the natural spin, it looked like it had

:30:56.:30:59.

taken it wide. Second service. That was a good serve, right into

:31:00.:31:20.

the body. Nothing Querrey could do with it really, other than send it

:31:21.:31:24.

back. He ended it almost exactly in the

:31:25.:32:05.

corner. Given himself a lifeline. 15-30

:32:06.:32:40.

down, that shot that Peter Fleming was talking about. Nice way to

:32:41.:32:45.

finish the game. Not too many slicing shots on the ATP tour these

:32:46.:32:47.

days. He's not going to get many

:32:48.:33:18.

opportunities as it is. He can't afford to give any of them away.

:33:19.:33:52.

He's allowed to chase this ball if it does come back over the net. He

:33:53.:33:59.

certainly allowed to follow through over the net.

:34:00.:35:11.

Top tournament, Queen's Club. It's lost a lot of big names, Jo Wilfred

:35:12.:35:21.

Tsonga going out to Gilles Muller. Gilles Muller will play the winner

:35:22.:35:26.

of this. Queen's has probably led the way under their tournament

:35:27.:35:33.

directors on the tour, they even have a concierge for the players.

:35:34.:35:37.

Anything the players want, even a restaurant reservation or they want

:35:38.:35:41.

to see a West End show, he would organise that for them and make all

:35:42.:35:45.

those reservations. It sounds like a great life. It's not like this every

:35:46.:35:51.

week. This really does lead the way. There's a nice laundry service down

:35:52.:35:55.

there as well, so you can say, there you go. I mean, how nice is that?!

:35:56.:36:02.

To be honest, it's not as if I do the washing at home either. I'm

:36:03.:36:08.

lucky. It's not like stopping off at the launderette next Barons Court

:36:09.:36:12.

station like we used to do. Asking for a bundle wash. I did that once

:36:13.:36:20.

in New York and got stung the $250. They did each room and item at a

:36:21.:36:27.

time and then put it on the room bill. Travelling on the circuit. He

:36:28.:36:31.

wouldn't miss it. Not most of the time.

:36:32.:37:05.

People still so enjoy these exchanges. They become rare. They

:37:06.:37:15.

have certainly become rarer on this surface. Clay, we might see it a

:37:16.:37:18.

little more often. I don't believe it. He has done it

:37:19.:38:07.

again. He did this against Murray as well. Just cushioning the half

:38:08.:38:09.

volley. Yes, lovely. It looks like Jordan Thompson is

:38:10.:38:40.

going to have one last throw of the dice.

:38:41.:38:49.

Yes, indeed. Sam Querrey will serve for it. It doesn't matter who you

:38:50.:39:06.

are or whether you won the tournament seven years ago like Sam

:39:07.:39:12.

Querrey did, the sort of tension in this game, the first couple of

:39:13.:39:16.

points, so crucial. If he can get his nose ahead...

:39:17.:39:30.

Querrey did well with this. Got the ball back to a length. He really

:39:31.:39:46.

did. Nothing he could do about that. Oh, he took that ball on, Querrey.

:39:47.:40:20.

He deserves credit. I'm delighted to report that Jay clerk from Ilkley --

:40:21.:40:34.

from Derby has won his first challenger match in Ilkley, beating

:40:35.:40:37.

Marchenko. Well done. Oh, he had a text Mac oh, boy! That

:40:38.:41:00.

volley from Sam was pushed. Yes, pushed at best. What a chance for

:41:01.:41:06.

Jordan Thompson. Two hours and ten minutes. A really

:41:07.:41:31.

good match. Is it coming to a close? Yes, it is. Jordan Thompson has been

:41:32.:41:36.

spectacular in this tournament, a huge contribution, but it is Sam

:41:37.:41:41.

Querrey new advances after two hours and 11 minutes. Really, a

:41:42.:41:45.

first-class match. The former champion here in front of a full

:41:46.:41:51.

house. Yes, a good performance from Sam Querrey. Had a bit of a blip in

:41:52.:41:57.

the middle of the second set, but all in all, powerful serving, strong

:41:58.:42:02.

grand stroking, while Jordan Thompson gave it his all. Just

:42:03.:42:05.

didn't quite have enough ammunition today. It was that hold when he was

:42:06.:42:21.

3-1 up from 15-30. Good effort. Jordan Thompson, massive

:42:22.:42:23.

contribution to the event. Getting in as a lucky loser, having lost in

:42:24.:42:28.

qualifying, when someone pulled out, he got into the main draw to play

:42:29.:42:33.

Andy Murray and not for a moment was and imitated. -- was he intimidated.

:42:34.:42:41.

He played superbly to beat the two-time champion here. He went

:42:42.:42:45.

three to this match against Sam Querrey but not to be this time. Sam

:42:46.:42:51.

Querrey will play Gilles Muller in the next round. Next for us,

:42:52.:43:00.

Medvedev and then closing the day with Jeremy Chardy and Feliciano

:43:01.:43:08.

Lopez. He is the man who beat Jordan Thompson qualifying. This is how Sam

:43:09.:43:17.

the man got the job done. Striking the ball cleanly on the forehand as

:43:18.:43:22.

ever, and good on the back can do. He is talking to John in that. Many

:43:23.:43:27.

congratulations. How would you assess that performance? That was a

:43:28.:43:31.

long match for grass and it is tricky out here. It is windy and

:43:32.:43:35.

that makes things so much more difficult and Jordan is tough. He is

:43:36.:43:40.

playing well, coming off that win against Andy he is confident and I'm

:43:41.:43:43.

happy to get through it. However where are you in big moments,

:43:44.:43:51.

getting yourself out of it when you were 0- 40 down, do you think then,

:43:52.:43:56.

that is me now. I have got the momentum? That did give me the

:43:57.:44:03.

confidence to finish it up. I think that was the biggest moment of the

:44:04.:44:06.

match. This is one of my favourite places. I love coming back here. How

:44:07.:44:15.

do you view the rest of the week? It doesn't get any easier. I'm playing

:44:16.:44:18.

Gilles Muller next and he is coming off of a win last week and is never

:44:19.:44:22.

fun to play a lefty on the grass. See you tomorrow. Thank you. Most

:44:23.:44:31.

people would say it is not easy to play Sam Querrey. He was too good

:44:32.:44:35.

today for Jordan Thompson but the Aussie has won a lot of fans here at

:44:36.:44:38.

the Queen's Club, putting out Andy Murray, a wonderful performance and

:44:39.:44:43.

showing real spirit there today. Peter and John are with me. Jordan

:44:44.:44:47.

Thompson played well, didn't he? I think we will see a lot more of him.

:44:48.:44:54.

Sam Querrey is tough. We underestimate him, he won his seven

:44:55.:44:57.

years ago and he is dangerous. He looks like he has got his focus

:44:58.:45:02.

back. He has been up and down but when he is cranking his forehand on

:45:03.:45:06.

this surface, I was also impressed with his two-handed backhand,

:45:07.:45:10.

hitting winners, when he is serving well, he is not nice to play on the

:45:11.:45:14.

surface. He has more than just his serve, doesn't he? He really does.

:45:15.:45:20.

It is interesting watching Sam Querrey. OK, he has been top 20, won

:45:21.:45:25.

several tournaments before, but he still have a lot of upside from my

:45:26.:45:30.

viewpoint. He still does things that you would say, wow, fundamentally he

:45:31.:45:37.

could do that a lot better. He serves, his forehand is a great job,

:45:38.:45:41.

his backhand is a good shot. So he does a lot of things that really

:45:42.:45:50.

bother opponents. You know, just mentally, if he could just have a

:45:51.:45:53.

little more intensity at times, I think it would really help him. That

:45:54.:45:58.

last that was such a roller-coaster with so many breaks. We will take

:45:59.:46:03.

you through the break points, because bacteria Sam. He shows his

:46:04.:46:06.

Aussie spirit there, not very happy about it, then he breaks straight

:46:07.:46:13.

back. It was wonderful tennis at this point. It was a really good

:46:14.:46:17.

match. I wasn't sure about the matchup initially, whether it would

:46:18.:46:21.

create good tennis, but it was a fabulous match. Three in a row here.

:46:22.:46:30.

Great. Unbelievable. He had the". Sam was on the ground. Maybe he

:46:31.:46:36.

looked at Symantec his eye off the ball, -- maybe he looked at Sam and

:46:37.:46:42.

took his eye off the ball, because that was such an important moment.

:46:43.:46:46.

That's what Jordan thinks that. Here is Querrey, because he was down 0-

:46:47.:46:51.

40 in this game and he we are talking about it, when he has time

:46:52.:46:55.

to set up that forehand, it is a real weapon. It is a real weapon and

:46:56.:47:00.

with the courts as good as they are, he loves it. I think he moves pretty

:47:01.:47:06.

well for someone of his size. He does. Much better than people think.

:47:07.:47:12.

I agree totally with Peter. You feel like sometimes, you always -- almost

:47:13.:47:18.

want to say to him, open up your shoulders, look like more of a

:47:19.:47:22.

winner. He sometimes looks down too quickly for me. And sometimes, I

:47:23.:47:26.

think a lot of these players are so used to hitting the ball, hitting

:47:27.:47:30.

their way out of trouble that they go for shots on low percentage

:47:31.:47:34.

shots, they are off court or off balance, they go for the spectacular

:47:35.:47:40.

winner, when really, if they hit a short Nadal like angle to get

:47:41.:47:44.

themselves back into the rally, you could win quite be more points.

:47:45.:47:50.

Which I think Sam is guilty of occasionally. But then again, he can

:47:51.:47:58.

play like that tennis, as Nadal found out earlier this year. As

:47:59.:48:02.

Djokovic last year. He is a danger man. He is a danger man and is

:48:03.:48:08.

married found out earlier this week, Jordan Thompson is a bit of a danger

:48:09.:48:13.

man as well. He is ranked 90 in the wild but it looks like he is playing

:48:14.:48:20.

better than that on this surface. I thought he was fabulous. I know he

:48:21.:48:23.

loves this match but I loved his personality, he is fiery. We always

:48:24.:48:26.

look for personalities on the court and I like Kathy engages the crowd.

:48:27.:48:32.

If he is not happy, he hit the ball across. He got his angles right,

:48:33.:48:37.

thankfully. I like his attitude and his game. It's an all-round game. He

:48:38.:48:42.

moves so well, his serve is underrated. He has got a good feel.

:48:43.:48:49.

I think we will see him rapidly rise up the rankings. One thing I am sure

:48:50.:48:53.

we are not going to see too much tomorrow are too many rallies -- is

:48:54.:48:58.

too many rallies with Querrey and Gilles Muller. Next, we have

:48:59.:49:02.

Medvedev taking on Kokkinakis. We are thoroughly enjoying the tennis

:49:03.:49:06.

here and we will do to the next few weeks, but there is a lot more to

:49:07.:49:08.

look forward to on the BBC. # It's all in the air, you hear it

:49:09.:49:24.

everywhere, no matter what you do, it's going to grab hold on you.

:49:25.:49:32.

# California Soul. # California Soul.

:49:33.:49:47.

# Start to hear, it's in your ear. # From early in the morning to

:49:48.:49:52.

sunset. # It's in the air, it's in the

:49:53.:50:01.

air... # Spoiled for choice, aren't we?

:50:02.:50:08.

For the next couple of weeks, it is tennis, culminating in the big W as

:50:09.:50:14.

it's affectionately known, live on the BBC right the way through from

:50:15.:50:19.

the third to the 16th of July. We cannot wait. It's interesting seeing

:50:20.:50:22.

some of these new stars emerging because in the first rounds, people

:50:23.:50:26.

will know more of these players and they are proving that they are not

:50:27.:50:32.

afraid to take on these big names. There are so many good players now

:50:33.:50:36.

and especially when you consider the guys aren't grass court specialists.

:50:37.:50:41.

No one is a grass court specialist any more barring Roger Federer and

:50:42.:50:45.

Andy Murray comedy few players who have played a lot of matches on it.

:50:46.:50:50.

When you get a guy like Shapovalov who has got a big serve, a big game,

:50:51.:50:54.

a lot of guys have that, they are trouble. They are trouble and we

:50:55.:51:01.

have probably got a big serve coming out because 606 Daniil Medvedev

:51:02.:51:04.

coming out to take on the Kokkinakis. What a great serve --

:51:05.:51:10.

what a great story Kokkinakis this. So many injuries. He was listing the

:51:11.:51:16.

number of injuries over the last 18 months. His ranking dropped so low,

:51:17.:51:21.

he is now up to 698. It's an incredible story but he must live in

:51:22.:51:27.

fear, is the body going to hold up? I was just thinking as he said that,

:51:28.:51:31.

were their times in the multiple recoveries that he thought, you know

:51:32.:51:36.

what, maybe my career will never really get started. Are these things

:51:37.:51:39.

going to keep plaguing me? You have got to hand it to him, he is gutsy,

:51:40.:51:45.

he wanted to get back, obviously. We haven't seen him that much this week

:51:46.:51:50.

yet but you can see how good he is and how good he would have been. He

:51:51.:51:53.

has taken a step back because of these injuries but now he is ready

:51:54.:51:57.

to accelerate the words and he's another one who's ranking is only

:51:58.:52:02.

going to climb and climb fast. Just inside the top 700 but you know he

:52:03.:52:06.

will back be back in the top 100 very soon. He has been talking to

:52:07.:52:12.

John. He has done it. A roar from Kokkinakis who is back and winning

:52:13.:52:16.

again at the highest level. The Euro heroes growing up? When I was young,

:52:17.:52:26.

Lleyton Hewitt was my hero. As an Australian, it was lovely to see him

:52:27.:52:31.

do so well. I liked watching Marat Safin as well. He used to smash his

:52:32.:52:37.

rackets. Is that good? I don't know but it is good for the Spectator. I

:52:38.:52:43.

think it made for good viewing and I liked Baghdatis as well. With him

:52:44.:52:46.

being part Greek as well. Those unbelievable runs he at Melbourne

:52:47.:52:51.

Park will stop that was awesome. Do you feel part Greek? For sure. Both

:52:52.:52:58.

my parents are Greek. I speak Greek as well but I am Australian. I

:52:59.:53:04.

definitely build part Greek. The one, give us some Greek. Say the

:53:05.:53:14.

weather is very hot in Greek. To be there, you could say anything and I

:53:15.:53:19.

would know. I was just trying to think what Greek could play

:53:20.:53:21.

Australia at Andy Goode meet. He would you be cheering for that? --

:53:22.:53:34.

what Greece could play Australia at and they could meet. Who would you

:53:35.:53:40.

be cheering for? I would want it to be close. A draw. Was there a point

:53:41.:53:46.

over the last few months where you thought, this is not going to work?

:53:47.:53:52.

For sure. With my shoulder, I spent so much time in rehabilitation, I

:53:53.:53:56.

still wasn't ready after nine months. Then when I thought I was

:53:57.:54:02.

getting over that, I got a groin injury, I tore my pack, I have mad

:54:03.:54:06.

dominoes. There were a lot of times when I was losing my will to get

:54:07.:54:11.

back. What was it that made you get it back? I'm not sure, to be honest.

:54:12.:54:18.

It's what I have done since such a young age, it's what I know best. It

:54:19.:54:22.

sounds stupid but they were definite times when it was depressing out

:54:23.:54:27.

there, knowing I have done the same thing for so long and I haven't been

:54:28.:54:30.

able to progress what I am doing on court. Day by day, having my family

:54:31.:54:35.

there supporting me was huge and just a lot of will for myself,

:54:36.:54:40.

really. That first-round victory a couple of days ago, we could see on

:54:41.:54:43.

your face what it meant to you. Was there a moment in your mind where

:54:44.:54:47.

you are thinking about the bad times and that I kept going for moments

:54:48.:54:52.

like this? Definitely. At the start, it wasn't looking great. I wasn't

:54:53.:54:56.

too comfortable. I didn't go through all that hard work and rubbish to

:54:57.:55:01.

play like this, so I was happy divide my form. As I got towards the

:55:02.:55:10.

finish line, I still wasn't sure I would win, because obviously I had a

:55:11.:55:13.

lot of chances in the second set, but that last feeling is what it's

:55:14.:55:15.

for. Having the crowd roar like that and the emotion at the end. What do

:55:16.:55:20.

you think you can achieve now? I am not sure. I am hoping this ceiling.

:55:21.:55:25.

I will take it day by day. I think my game is good enough to be a very

:55:26.:55:30.

good player but I need to keep working, improve my weaknesses,

:55:31.:55:33.

continue my strengths and busy I want to be top ten. What is good

:55:34.:55:38.

luck in Greek? We will settle on that. Thank you. What a nice guy.

:55:39.:55:48.

His career hadn't even started when the injuries setting, had it,

:55:49.:55:52.

because he was such a great talent. We thought he was one for the

:55:53.:55:57.

future. He is only 21. It's difficult for a guy who have had a

:55:58.:56:01.

bunch of injuries. It's almost like you have two start again and not

:56:02.:56:05.

worry about rehabilitating your stomach or your groin or your

:56:06.:56:09.

shoulder. Just do the whole package, get your whole body working together

:56:10.:56:14.

so that you can maybe then get on a run of health. You know, if you do

:56:15.:56:19.

it piecemeal, you are always injured. Something is always going

:56:20.:56:22.

wrong. At least that was my experience back in the day. And so,

:56:23.:56:29.

at age 21, he maybe needs to not worry so much about results right

:56:30.:56:34.

now, just keep himself together. But also, anyone who's had a major

:56:35.:56:38.

injury and we have all had injuries, you do doubt your body after that,

:56:39.:56:43.

don't you? You doubt if you have had one serious injury, let alone ten

:56:44.:56:48.

like he has had. The amount of time spent in the treatment room and the

:56:49.:56:52.

rehab centre, back and forth, it must have been soul destroying at

:56:53.:56:58.

times and I think deep down, you sort of alluded to that, he is

:56:59.:57:02.

setting goals, he wants to be in the top ten, but I think right now he is

:57:03.:57:06.

thrilled to be back. Every week he played is almost like a bonus and I

:57:07.:57:10.

agree with Peter. He needs to make sure everything is in June and I bet

:57:11.:57:15.

he pays more attention now to making sure everything is OK off court than

:57:16.:57:18.

probably any other player on the tiller. Probably what happens is for

:57:19.:57:23.

overcooked takes you. What he needs to learn now is how his body works

:57:24.:57:28.

and how he can maintain it. That would be the greatest time spent for

:57:29.:57:33.

him. It was wonderful victory, wasn't it, over Raonic? Such a good

:57:34.:57:38.

victory with that huge roar at the end. I'm back! Because Raonic wasn't

:57:39.:57:44.

at his best but he had to hold his nerve. Anyone who can beat Raonic on

:57:45.:57:52.

grass as to play a very good match. Yes, Raonic didn't have a

:57:53.:57:56.

particularly good day but still you have to do battle against that

:57:57.:57:59.

served and Kokkinakis for me was mentally so good in this match. For

:58:00.:58:04.

someone who has been out for so long, has had so little play, he

:58:05.:58:12.

played a superb match. Yes, Milos Raonic growing out but Kokkinakis

:58:13.:58:16.

just proving what a variety he having his gang and it's great to

:58:17.:58:21.

see him back again. And Lleyton Hewitt, he has made such a great

:58:22.:58:27.

team effort, absentee, as far as the Aussies go with Kokkinakis, Thompson

:58:28.:58:31.

and Kyrgios. He wants them to become a team like the great Aussies were

:58:32.:58:34.

from the past. I think that really helps them to. Yes, especially when

:58:35.:58:41.

you are so far away from everything. You can't take a week off and go

:58:42.:58:45.

home. You have got to hang with your mates and pull together. Well, that

:58:46.:58:51.

was that big roar that signalled that when and what a great when it

:58:52.:58:58.

was for Kokkinakis. What about his opponent today, Peter? Six foot six,

:58:59.:59:04.

Daniil Medvedev. We have seen so many great juniors come through a

:59:05.:59:09.

successful junior career like Shapovalov has done well, likes

:59:10.:59:12.

thereafter and Kyrgios. He hasn't had that. He is thought of coming of

:59:13.:59:20.

age now. He is a big guy. I don't know his game that well, to be quite

:59:21.:59:25.

honest with you. He certainly hasn't played that much on grass. That is

:59:26.:59:30.

an advantage for Kokkinakis. As you say, he will have taken heart from

:59:31.:59:36.

the guys like Kyrgios, like Zverev who have really made a dent in the

:59:37.:59:44.

game and, you know, he is on the verge of really making a name for

:59:45.:59:46.

himself in the top 20, top 30. It is interesting, Medvedev beat

:59:47.:00:01.

Nicolas Mahut, and that is a big scalp on grass. Absolutely, one of

:00:02.:00:06.

the guys who serves on the volley is just about as well as anyone, and

:00:07.:00:09.

Willie knows his way around a grass court. So clearly, this guy can

:00:10.:00:17.

play. As you say, two 21-year-olds going head-to-head, I think we will

:00:18.:00:22.

enjoy this the Government we certainly will. And I hope this

:00:23.:00:26.

young man stays fit and healthy all the way through it as well.

:00:27.:00:32.

ANDREW COTTER: Many people will have seen the big names falling at

:00:33.:00:35.

Queen's Club and perhaps been dismayed, but when you look at those

:00:36.:00:39.

while left, they all have interesting stories to be told.

:00:40.:00:43.

Here, we have 221-year-olds have taken different routes to be here.

:00:44.:00:51.

Kokkinakis has been in the spotlight from a very young age. More study

:00:52.:00:57.

progress from Medvedev. It's Kokkinakis who gets us going.

:00:58.:01:37.

Certainly the most gloomy it has been on Centre Court this week.

:01:38.:02:15.

You can disregard the rankings, with all the injuries.

:02:16.:03:04.

Bit of a breeze coming in from the west as well today.

:03:05.:03:59.

JOHN LLOYD: Bit lucky to get away with that, Medvedev. One of the

:04:00.:04:12.

coaches of Medvedev, from the South of France, where Medvedev lives now.

:04:13.:04:42.

First service game, first break point for Daniil Medvedev.

:04:43.:05:29.

Medvedev has it, he stepped up the volume in the bag points, and he has

:05:30.:05:39.

broken serve. It is always interesting, he has had such a big

:05:40.:05:45.

win over Milos Raonic, Kokkinakis, and now he has to try and follow it

:05:46.:05:48.

up in the next match, against someone who on paper does not

:05:49.:05:53.

present same challenge? Yeah, it is a different type of match mentally,

:05:54.:05:59.

as you say. That was a sloppy game, really, from Kokkinakis. He just did

:06:00.:06:03.

not seem to be set in what he needed to do. He had a couple of

:06:04.:06:09.

opportunities, was loose with his groundstrokes, the first serve was a

:06:10.:06:13.

bit off. That break of serve was really handed to Medvedev.

:06:14.:06:45.

Both tall men, but different builds. Kokkinakis, much more powerful

:06:46.:06:59.

looking to fill Medvedev. -- more powerful looking than Medvedev.

:07:00.:07:27.

Medvedev moves well for someone of his size.

:07:28.:07:58.

Once more, mistakes from Kokkinakis, as much as anything else. Yeah, he

:07:59.:08:07.

needs to play a good service game here, just to settle down a little

:08:08.:08:11.

bit. He made a lot of errors in those first two game.

:08:12.:10:49.

That was strange. Medvedev gave it the old fake - I've given up on this

:10:50.:10:58.

point. Then he decided to move a little bit. Got away with it.

:10:59.:11:14.

First game on the board for Kokkinakis. We have spoken quite a

:11:15.:11:28.

bit about his injury problems, but it has been a more steady progress

:11:29.:11:35.

for Daniil Medvedev. Both 21, Medvedev, from Moscow, but as I've

:11:36.:11:41.

mentioned, now works and trains in the South of France. Made his first

:11:42.:11:50.

ATP final in Chennai in January, losing to Bautista Agut. At a

:11:51.:11:57.

struggle around March, with glandular fever. Had to miss a

:11:58.:12:02.

couple of events, in Miami and Marrakesh. His first appearance here

:12:03.:12:10.

at Queen's, but again he's making that steady progress. Have a bit of

:12:11.:12:17.

a breakthrough in Moscow last year, his home city, where he reached the

:12:18.:12:21.

quarterfinals, and that 50 is ranking a little bit. -- that lifted

:12:22.:12:30.

his ranking. By contrast, Kokkinakis was hitting the headlines from a

:12:31.:12:34.

younger age, because his talents. But he has had all sorts of problems

:12:35.:12:41.

with injury. And he was certainly thinking about giving it up, it was

:12:42.:12:43.

so frustrating for him. Not much to fault in the start of

:12:44.:15:02.

Daniil Medvedev. He just wanders around in calm fashion, going about

:15:03.:15:09.

his business. He does not have a really big serve, Medvedev, for

:15:10.:15:14.

someone of his size, but it's accurate. We have seen that three of

:15:15.:15:17.

four times already. In his first match against Milos

:15:18.:15:47.

Raonic, Kokkinakis started serving very badly, and got better as the

:15:48.:15:54.

match went on. He has not got too many first serves in yet.

:15:55.:16:24.

That's good from Kokkinakis, a little bit of help from the net

:16:25.:16:28.

along the way. He's hitting the ball well,

:16:29.:18:34.

Medvedev. He's avoiding too many errors as well. Accurate with those

:18:35.:18:40.

round strokes in that rally. Kokkinakis is on the defensive all

:18:41.:18:48.

the time. The way he hits that background, really good whip to it.

:18:49.:19:01.

Wild and wide from Kokkinakis. Medvedev now in complete control of

:19:02.:19:06.

this first set. He's just looked very composed,

:19:07.:19:21.

following his first-round win over Nicolas Mahut. He was pretty

:19:22.:19:29.

composed on eight points as well in that match, saving all five break

:19:30.:19:37.

points that he faced. It is a good win, to beat Nicolas Mahut on grass.

:19:38.:19:42.

And he had a solid tournament last year as well, getting to the

:19:43.:19:47.

quarterfinals. So, his form is very good at the moment. He's been very

:19:48.:19:55.

composed out here, as you said. On the other hand, Kokkinakis, to me,

:19:56.:19:58.

it looks like his feet aren't moving. He looks like he's just

:19:59.:20:03.

played a much the night before, and hasn't quite got his feet moving. He

:20:04.:20:14.

seems a bit leggy to me at the moment, not quite there yet.

:20:15.:20:19.

Unfortunately, he's just about given up this first set already after such

:20:20.:20:26.

a slow start. To put things in perspective, until his win over

:20:27.:20:32.

Raonic, he did beat Mikhail Youzhny last week, that was his first ATP

:20:33.:20:40.

Tour win in 21 months. So, yes, he's injury-free now, but you have still

:20:41.:20:43.

got to get matches under your belt in order to get comfortable after

:20:44.:20:44.

the injuries. Hop, step and a jump from Medvedev

:20:45.:21:04.

into that one. Yes, not quite sure he needed to do this, but it looks

:21:05.:21:06.

nice! He looked at his coaching team

:21:07.:22:14.

there. That's a regulation shot, big opportunity to get himself back into

:22:15.:22:18.

this set, and it was a regulation forehand.

:22:19.:22:28.

It's an unorthodox serve, not most flowing. But it does its job, he's

:22:29.:22:38.

swinging that serve out wide. And the set is slipping away from

:22:39.:23:00.

Thanasi Kokkinakis. Looks like he needs to hit one big winner and then

:23:01.:23:05.

just explode a little bit, get himself charged up.

:23:06.:23:32.

It has not been his day at the moment - 42% first serves he's made

:23:33.:23:38.

so far in this set. We mentioned, Kokkinakis is playing

:23:39.:26:18.

with a protected ranking, due to medical reasons.

:26:19.:26:33.

Certainly, if he can get very extended run, injury-free, thing you

:26:34.:26:41.

would expect him to get into the top 100, and higher again. He has the

:26:42.:26:48.

potential to be a top 50, top 20 player, if everything comes

:26:49.:26:52.

together. I agree. Today he's certainly not playing at that level.

:26:53.:26:55.

He's all over the place at the moment. His serve has been just off

:26:56.:27:04.

percentage-wise. Ground strokes in that it, footwork is not there. But

:27:05.:27:10.

he can get it back. In his first-round, his first serve was off

:27:11.:27:15.

and then he got the percentage up big-time. That's the first thing he

:27:16.:27:24.

needs to take care of. This Medvedev serve is not usually fast, but it's

:27:25.:27:33.

very effective. 122, it's not that big, but it's an inch from the line

:27:34.:27:43.

- that's what he does so well. That one was only 113. But he gets in a

:27:44.:27:48.

position where he can then attack on the next ball. And a 70% first serve

:27:49.:28:12.

ratio. Exactly! Did not know what he was going to do there. Thought he

:28:13.:28:17.

was going to do his hop and jump again. He took an awfully big swing

:28:18.:28:21.

on that! And there it is, and you would say

:28:22.:28:43.

that has been done with a minimum of fuss by Daniel Medvedev, who takes

:28:44.:28:50.

the first set in emphatic fashion. SUE BARKER: The young Russian very

:28:51.:28:53.

much in control in this match, and we will be right back with it. We

:28:54.:28:57.

can now round up a couple of results from earlier. Former champion and US

:28:58.:29:02.

Open champion Marin Cilic is through, the highest ranked player

:29:03.:29:07.

left in the draw. He beat his opponent from the United States 6-0,

:29:08.:29:17.

6-4. And Sam Querrey, another former champion, is also through. He beat

:29:18.:29:23.

Jordan Thompson in three sets, winning 6-3 in the final set. It was

:29:24.:29:31.

a very entertaining match. So, Sam Querrey and Marin Cilic, both

:29:32.:29:35.

through. And so, the draw as it stands...

:29:36.:29:48.

Another former champion in the bottom half, Grigor Dimitrov - he's

:29:49.:29:55.

looked very impressive, and he will face the winner of the match which

:29:56.:29:57.

is on right now. Feliciano Lopez against Jeremy

:29:58.:30:06.

Chardy still to come. COMMENTATOR: He will be experiencing

:30:07.:30:22.

an Wimbledon for the first time this year. Last year he lost to Marcus

:30:23.:30:26.

Willis who enjoyed himself greatly. Untidy start to this second set from

:30:27.:31:09.

Kokkinakis. His problems continue. Oh. Use all of the court. I don't

:31:10.:32:02.

think he meant to cut this as fine as he did.

:32:03.:32:41.

That last shot may have been the benefit of playing against

:32:42.:33:29.

Kokkinakis last week. He picked where this forehand was going. He

:33:30.:33:34.

read it early. He really won a point that he should have been out of.

:33:35.:33:51.

Again, a difference that a couple of first serves make. . We haven't

:33:52.:34:03.

talked about that much. They had that one meeting in the Netherlands

:34:04.:34:11.

last week. Medvedev winning 6-3, 7-6. Has that fresh in the memory

:34:12.:34:14.

banks. I can't hear what he said, but not

:34:15.:35:09.

pleased with his efforts so far, Kokkinakis.

:35:10.:36:37.

Just error after error. Just doesn't have any rhythm today at the moment,

:36:38.:36:44.

either side, forehand and backhand. Missing so many on both wings.

:36:45.:37:03.

Oh, dear. So Kokkinakis broken right at the start of this second set.

:37:04.:37:12.

Architect of his own demise as well. Medvedev had to do very little

:37:13.:37:17.

there. Actually, if we are looking at the serve of Kokkinakis, it has

:37:18.:37:20.

been loose and ragged. Medvedev, as you talked about John, the opposite.

:37:21.:37:26.

It's so accurate? It's so accurate. You can see where he's aiming those

:37:27.:37:30.

shots. They are so close to the line. Look at the ones down the

:37:31.:37:34.

middle. He has that serve just easy. The one out wide to the forehand,

:37:35.:37:38.

awesome. The one outside to the backhand there. He's just picking

:37:39.:37:44.

his spots. 119, it's an average serve by today's standards. If that.

:37:45.:37:48.

It's below-average. When you are that accurate, it's not all about

:37:49.:37:52.

speed. If you don't serve ha many aces with those type of serves it

:37:53.:37:56.

will enable you to get that first-strike ahead on the next shot.

:37:57.:38:01.

That's what he's within doing. If you are the height he is, even if

:38:02.:38:07.

lacking speed, it's coming down at awkward angles. Exactly.

:38:08.:39:04.

Another example of that, the way Medvedev, again, not a big striker

:39:05.:39:12.

of the ball. You wouldn't say - he's got a fearsome forehand or backhand,

:39:13.:39:17.

it's accurate, it's deep. A lot of good angles. He's one of those one

:39:18.:39:26.

that switches off the mute button during rallies and suddenly springs

:39:27.:39:28.

into noisy life. Not much for them to be concerned

:39:29.:39:46.

about at the moment. Medvedev playing very tidily.

:39:47.:39:55.

There's something for climate change. You can see the great reach

:39:56.:39:59.

that Medvedev has in defence. It's just so simple. He very rarely

:40:00.:40:47.

serve as body serve, he just goes for the lines, but he finds them or

:40:48.:40:51.

he gets very close to them. It's amazing. He's played well. Obviously

:40:52.:41:01.

with that score, Kokkinakis has played poorly in comparison with his

:41:02.:41:06.

first round match. He doesn't doesn't seem to be here today at the

:41:07.:41:10.

moment. He's trying. It's just not there.

:41:11.:41:24.

Unfortunately, they can't help you. Frantic chewing going on down there.

:41:25.:41:42.

I always think when you are playing this badly, just for maybe a game or

:41:43.:41:51.

two, you know, don't go for as many big shots, Kokkinakis. Hit it down

:41:52.:41:57.

the middle, but make your margins wider until you get your rhythm.

:41:58.:41:59.

Stop throwing so men errors in. A challenge with that one. Medvedev

:42:00.:42:26.

looks pretty confident that it was out.

:42:27.:42:37.

He's in danger now Kokkinakis of sinking fast. A couple of points for

:42:38.:43:30.

Medvedev for a double break. He needs something. It's almost like

:43:31.:44:16.

he needs a flash of brilliance. Something to get him going and get

:44:17.:44:20.

the crowd going and and change the course of the match.

:44:21.:44:42.

Oh, dear, oh, dear, Medvedev has the double break. Again, it is loose

:44:43.:44:53.

from Thanasis Kokkinakis. There's no way he is turning this round if he

:44:54.:44:57.

continues to play like this. Can't see it. He just looks flat today. It

:44:58.:45:04.

can happen. But, in comparison with his first round, when he was so

:45:05.:45:10.

animated and in every point, he just looks almost like he's resigned to

:45:11.:45:15.

his fate today and he's just going for so much instead of just trying

:45:16.:45:18.

to calm down a little bit. Make a few more balls in court before you

:45:19.:45:23.

go for the big shot. He's just off. His timing is off. Not moving well.

:45:24.:45:29.

I suppose, after you have a big win like he had, you've been out of the

:45:30.:45:33.

game for so long, really, I know he played last week in a couple of

:45:34.:45:37.

matches here and there, but he got a lot of attention, I'm sure, a lot of

:45:38.:45:41.

interviews, a lot of phone calls come his way. A lot of internet

:45:42.:45:48.

stuff. Sometimes you just... You, sort of, you are so up for a while

:45:49.:45:53.

on it and then you can't get that energy level up the next day or the

:45:54.:45:57.

day after when you play again. It's just not quite there. We have six of

:45:58.:46:04.

the eight quarter-final places settled already. Sam Querrey is

:46:05.:46:14.

through and Marin Cilic. Dimitrov will play the winner of this match.

:46:15.:46:25.

Next up on court is Feliciano Lopez playing Jeremy Chardy. Autumn the

:46:26.:46:32.

indicators are that Daniil Medvedev will be the next to step into the

:46:33.:46:42.

last eight. Just waiting on the upper seats there. They are filing

:46:43.:46:43.

in. Medvedev is going to get going. The man threatening the Top 50 with

:46:44.:47:12.

this run, Medvedev. The composure, the control he's shown suggests he

:47:13.:47:25.

can go further. That's his worst error he's made today, Medvedev. Set

:47:26.:47:30.

him up for it. He doesn't play like a 21-year-old. He's a very season

:47:31.:47:32.

gamer. A very tidy game. It's not based on power, is it,

:47:33.:47:50.

that's for sure. It's more accuracy. Difficult to beat. Making his

:47:51.:47:52.

opponent play one more ball. The way he plays as well. Slowly

:47:53.:48:09.

between points here. Just ambles around, very calm, very measured.

:48:10.:48:12.

Once he steps up to the line he take nos time at all. A couple of

:48:13.:48:21.

bounces, perhaps. It doesn't look good that serve. It's not very

:48:22.:48:26.

powerful, but it is good. It's so accurate. He's racing through this

:48:27.:48:38.

now. They have been on court for short of 50 minutes. Very, very

:48:39.:48:44.

difficult to see a way back for Thanasis Kokkinakis. 48 minutes on

:48:45.:48:52.

court. Kokkinakis trying to find something.

:48:53.:49:08.

Good from Medvedev. That is about as much emotion as you see from him.

:49:09.:51:27.

Again, got himself out of the way and stepped into it.

:51:28.:51:55.

Glad to get something up there in this second set.

:51:56.:52:07.

Not too much for the crowd to get their teeth into it in this match.

:52:08.:52:17.

No. Some good matches, but a few have been quite one-sided and they

:52:18.:52:21.

need a few good rallies to get them going. He's puzzled. He's not

:52:22.:52:29.

working this out. He is not working out the problem he has in front of

:52:30.:52:31.

him. He's just sort of settled on his

:52:32.:52:35.

plan A. It's not working and it's not going to plan B, to try and do

:52:36.:52:39.

something different, that's the problem. It's almost like he's

:52:40.:52:43.

trying to find his way by hitting harder and it's not working. Not

:52:44.:52:50.

having a good afternoon so far. Jordan Thompson losing to Sam

:52:51.:53:01.

Querrey. Kokkinakis in a bit of bother.

:53:02.:53:21.

He's elsewhere now prepare for Wimbledon. Medvedev double break

:53:22.:53:36.

serving 4-1. Just a hint of a smile on his face.

:53:37.:53:49.

Finding such a rhythm now. 75% first serves. Relentless.

:53:50.:54:15.

Only just. Looking for the 45 second game. Might still beat a minute. Ah.

:54:16.:54:26.

Is the second serve ace. There we are, 53 second. Impressive John? It

:54:27.:54:35.

is, it is. He's unorthodox. He's not a fluid sort of player. He doesn't

:54:36.:54:39.

have any really sort of big, big shots in terms of speed and yet the

:54:40.:54:45.

package is good. It's awkward. It's tough to beat. It's accurate.

:54:46.:54:50.

Defends well and moves well for someone who is 6 foot 6. Serving

:54:51.:54:53.

then to stay in this match. A few players, he will come up

:54:54.:55:20.

against some players who will meet him for the first time, they might

:55:21.:55:26.

be taken aback. Might get used to him when they play him a few times.

:55:27.:55:30.

That is what happens as players rise up through the rankings.

:55:31.:55:39.

Oh. I thought he had that for a second.

:55:40.:56:14.

Changing pace of there. The forehand an then he had the backhand. Then a

:56:15.:56:39.

nice little angle. Not much pace on it.

:56:40.:57:21.

Frustration in everything he does now, Kokkinakis, but he has another

:57:22.:57:33.

game. Wele talked about just before the match it was an event in Moscow

:57:34.:57:37.

last year, towards the end of the year, October, that he had a decent

:57:38.:57:43.

run. He got to the quarter-finals. He

:57:44.:57:49.

eventually lost. We saw what he could do. That was the result which

:57:50.:57:53.

gave him a bit of a boost up the rankings. It's hard to make progress

:57:54.:57:59.

when you are playing challenger events and accumulate the points you

:58:00.:58:04.

need one event toive go you the crucial lift upping the rankings.

:58:05.:58:07.

Gives you confidence and access to more events. Once you get

:58:08.:58:12.

established, that's the easier part done, barring injuries. Impressive

:58:13.:58:15.

the way that Medvedev has done things. He has had a steady move up

:58:16.:58:23.

the rankings. He's not a flashy player. No, not at Apart from that

:58:24.:58:31.

all. One bit into the volley which was positively exuberant. There is a

:58:32.:58:35.

man who barely wants to get out of his chair, though. Still just shy of

:58:36.:58:46.

an hour on court. Daniil Medvedev ready to serve for a place in the

:58:47.:58:48.

quarter-finals. And taken on the first attempt by

:58:49.:59:49.

Daniil Medvedev. Not necessarily a match to stir the soul here at the

:59:50.:59:55.

Queen's Club that is a deeply impressive performance from the

:59:56.:00:00.

Russian. This 21-year-old has overpowered and outclassed the

:00:01.:00:03.

21-year-old on the other side of the net, Thanasis Kokkinakis. Well, well

:00:04.:00:07.

beaten by Daniil Medvedev, who moves through to the quarter-finals and

:00:08.:00:11.

continues his rise up the rankings in this sport. What a win.

:00:12.:00:14.

Comprehensive. Thanasis Kokkinakis he had looked so

:00:15.:00:22.

good against Milos Raonic. Different character today. Cuts a sorry figure

:00:23.:00:28.

as he takes his leave. You hope that his recovery from injury and getting

:00:29.:00:34.

back into the game, he needs more regular matches, getting victories,

:00:35.:00:37.

and he too will climb back up the rankings. He is too talented not if

:00:38.:00:45.

he stays injury-free. Today was a wretched performance from

:00:46.:00:46.

Kokkinakis. Not necessarily a showman, Daniil

:00:47.:01:09.

Medvedev, but that was clinical. Doesn't have to reach out too by two

:01:10.:01:19.

class a few hands. He will go through to play Grigor Dimitrov, and

:01:20.:01:22.

it will be very interesting to see how Dimitrov handles him. That was

:01:23.:01:29.

as straightforward as it gets for Daniel Medvedev. We can hear from

:01:30.:01:38.

him now. Well played today. You played last week and it was a lot

:01:39.:01:42.

closer than that - how do you explain the difference? Well,

:01:43.:01:49.

honestly, I think Kokkinakis did not play his best today, because he's a

:01:50.:01:54.

great player, with a huge serve. I was pleased that I managed to have a

:01:55.:01:59.

solid game, I was serving amazing and I am happy. 13 aces, and one

:02:00.:02:05.

game took only 50 seconds - have you got a personal record? I actually

:02:06.:02:11.

don't know if I ever did four aces, I did three today. Most people here

:02:12.:02:18.

today in the arena probably don't know too much about you, so give us

:02:19.:02:22.

some background on when you started playing, you're from Moscow, when

:02:23.:02:26.

you moved to France, things like that? I started to play when I was

:02:27.:02:32.

six. Accidentally, I went into a tennis group, and I'm sure I'm

:02:33.:02:39.

happy! I moved to France when I was 18 because at one point in Russia it

:02:40.:02:44.

is hard to improve, and I'm happy with where I am now. We are

:02:45.:02:47.

discussing, are there any grass courts in Russia? There are actually

:02:48.:02:53.

indoors, synthetic grass. But they're not easy to play, and even

:02:54.:02:58.

much faster than here. There are no outdoor grass courts. Well done.

:02:59.:03:03.

Thank you very much. SUE BARKER: Yes, very well played.

:03:04.:03:09.

Finishing up with another big serve, that was the key to the match. Not a

:03:10.:03:16.

big serve but so effective. He goes through to face Grigor Dimitrov

:03:17.:03:24.

tomorrow. So, that is Centre Court today. And John has made his way

:03:25.:03:28.

here. Peter, we were talking about that serve of his, and John was

:03:29.:03:33.

saying in the commentary, it is not a fast serve, but the placement is

:03:34.:03:38.

so good? First of all, he made over 70% of his first serves. And he

:03:39.:03:45.

lost, what, one point on his first serve? He was placing it amazingly

:03:46.:03:51.

well. It is an awkward looking action, he tosses the ball well out

:03:52.:03:56.

to his right so he gets a lot of slice on it. But it is clearly if it

:03:57.:04:00.

had on this surface. When he's hitting it in as often as he was

:04:01.:04:04.

today, he's a rough customer to break the McCourty how is -- rough

:04:05.:04:11.

customer to break, Kokkinakis did not even get close. Today, he looked

:04:12.:04:21.

totally flat to me today. He was trying, and we were thinking, get a

:04:22.:04:25.

few balls back, make the margins bigger, do something. Decried the

:04:26.:04:30.

opposite, to hit his way out of trouble, and he kept making error

:04:31.:04:34.

after error, looking at his box, wouldn't know what was going on. His

:04:35.:04:39.

serve was bad today, so different from his previous match. But when he

:04:40.:04:44.

has played so little recently, maybe we should have expected that. And

:04:45.:04:47.

also perhaps, because his match was so long against Raonic, perhaps he's

:04:48.:04:52.

woken up the next few days a little sore. The second day after you have

:04:53.:04:57.

a hard work-out is often the most difficult. So this morning maybe he

:04:58.:05:02.

just wasn't feeling that great. And then the panic strikes you, when

:05:03.:05:06.

something's not working properly and you know you can't move, and you

:05:07.:05:10.

think you have to hit a winner on every ball. And it goes from bad to

:05:11.:05:16.

worse. And it is cooler today, there's a strong wind, and sometimes

:05:17.:05:21.

that can put you off as well? And I thought Medvedev handled that so

:05:22.:05:24.

well. Even his groundstrokes, they're not big. But he's so

:05:25.:05:31.

accurate. He soaks up the pace and hits these awkward looking shots.

:05:32.:05:37.

The thing which surprised me a little bit, Kokkinakis having played

:05:38.:05:40.

him just a week ago, I thought he would have at least read some of the

:05:41.:05:45.

serves, or got a feel for them, but he didn't - he had no idea.

:05:46.:05:50.

Medvedev, hitting the ball so close to the lines, making Kokkinakis move

:05:51.:05:55.

all over the place, it is an effortless style? Bernard Tomic, a

:05:56.:06:02.

little bit? Does not seem to hit it hard but he does the job. He will be

:06:03.:06:07.

playing Grigor Dimitrov tomorrow, so it's going to be a very different

:06:08.:06:11.

kind of match, he's not going to have the time that he had out there

:06:12.:06:15.

today. Well, perhaps. But if he serves the way he did today, then he

:06:16.:06:21.

is going to hold serve. And that takes a lot of pressure off the rest

:06:22.:06:29.

of his game. He can then play the kind of match he likes to play. But

:06:30.:06:35.

as you say, Dimitrov is going to be an entirely different proposition

:06:36.:06:41.

tomorrow. Only 21 years of age, and ranked 60 at the moment, you can see

:06:42.:06:47.

he's another one of these youngsters that's going to be moving up the

:06:48.:06:51.

rankings? He plays a mature game. He looks like he knows the court, he

:06:52.:06:55.

knows when to hit the ball at the right time, he makes you win the

:06:56.:07:00.

point of. And when he gets the chance, he finds angles, not a big

:07:01.:07:04.

hitter, but accurate, centage is good. You're going to have to play a

:07:05.:07:09.

good game to beat him. You're going to have to overpower him, or you're

:07:10.:07:16.

going to have to stay with him, because he's not going to go away.

:07:17.:07:19.

One thing you know is that he will be watched by Dani Valverdu,. 'S

:07:20.:07:24.

coach. They're third on Centre Court tomorrow. First up it is Sam Querrey

:07:25.:07:34.

against Gilles Muller, the battle of the big servers.

:07:35.:07:45.

And we will be on the air on BBC Two at the usual time, at one o'clock.

:07:46.:07:57.

Some interesting matchups, with three former champions are people

:07:58.:08:02.

who know their way around this court, and nobody talking about

:08:03.:08:07.

Tomas Berdych? Exactly. He is quite a silent great player! Former

:08:08.:08:17.

Wimbledon finalist! So, I don't know, is he the favourite here? I

:08:18.:08:24.

don't think so. Maybe Cilic, maybe Dimitrov. But he's certainly a

:08:25.:08:30.

dangerous floater. Just before we go to Jeremy Chardy against Lopez, John

:08:31.:08:34.

Inverdale has been getting out and about behind-the-scenes to meet some

:08:35.:08:39.

of the characters who make this tournament work. Today, he takes a

:08:40.:08:42.

look at how the Centre Court seating has changed this year. The year is a

:08:43.:08:47.

long time in tennis. 12 months ago here at Queen's, beneath me was the

:08:48.:08:54.

number one court. Now, this is a magnificent new construction which

:08:55.:08:58.

houses an extra 3000 seats. This whole operation has been

:08:59.:09:02.

masterminded by a man who spends four months year here at Queen's to

:09:03.:09:06.

make sure that everything is fine when it comes to the first day of

:09:07.:09:12.

played. John, tell us about your four months here in the glamorous

:09:13.:09:16.

car park at Queen's Club? Lovely, you can't beat it, can you? I'm

:09:17.:09:21.

usually the first man on site and the last man off. We tend to work

:09:22.:09:26.

with the ground staff to take out all the grass courts, all the clay

:09:27.:09:32.

courts, and cover them, ready for building the marquees and the

:09:33.:09:37.

seating. And how much more of an operation has that been this year

:09:38.:09:41.

because of the expanded Grandstand? It has been quite a bit tougher this

:09:42.:09:45.

year, actually, with more equipment and men coming onto the site.

:09:46.:09:49.

Transport getting in and out of London, as everybody knows, is

:09:50.:09:54.

pretty horrendous. We have had 50 trailers coming in, and 50 going

:09:55.:09:58.

back out again, it is a lot of kit coming on site. You have been

:09:59.:10:03.

working here for 30-odd years, in charge for 26 - what are the biggest

:10:04.:10:07.

changes in that time? Obviously, the size of it, it has just increased

:10:08.:10:13.

every year. I would say we have kept up the standard as it has gone on,

:10:14.:10:19.

it's been good, can't complain. What is the single gift challenge for you

:10:20.:10:24.

year on year? Probably managing the site and managing the men that's on

:10:25.:10:31.

site. It starts off with a small number of men, and then up to 200,

:10:32.:10:35.

maybe more. Challenges, probably getting the kit in and out safely.

:10:36.:10:44.

On the last day of July, or whenever it is, when you get home to Glasgow,

:10:45.:10:48.

what is the first thing you do? When I get home? Probably have a cold

:10:49.:10:52.

beer, because it takes me ten hours to tow the caravan back to Scotland.

:10:53.:10:58.

Have a cold beer and relax. And so on Monday, John and his 200 strong

:10:59.:11:03.

team will begin the arduous process of dismantling this massive

:11:04.:11:07.

operation. And then, 36 weeks after that, they will start all over

:11:08.:11:10.

again. It is incredible, isn't it? We just walked in here on Monday

:11:11.:11:14.

morning and think, it all looks very nice! Can you imagine?! Coming into

:11:15.:11:24.

Queen's, the roads are not built for cars, a lot of cars, anyway! To

:11:25.:11:29.

think they have got to get those huge things in, it must be a

:11:30.:11:34.

nightmare. Good luck, he's still doing the job so he must love it!

:11:35.:11:40.

And also the crowd love it as well, it's such a popular tournament, and

:11:41.:11:44.

now with increased seating, it has given even more people a chance,

:11:45.:11:47.

because so many people can't get their hands on a Wimbledon ticket.

:11:48.:11:52.

And a lot of people say they prefer coming here to Wimbledon, sacrilege,

:11:53.:11:56.

but it is such intimate venue! And they know how to put on a party.

:11:57.:12:01.

They certainly do, it's wonderful entertainment and hospitality here

:12:02.:12:05.

at the Queen's Club. Our final Match Of The Day, the players are already

:12:06.:12:07.

on court, Feliciano Lopez against Jeremy Chardy. Feliciano Lopez, he

:12:08.:12:16.

was so impressive in beating Stan Wawrinka. Well, this surface is made

:12:17.:12:24.

for him. If he can get through this one, he certainly could win this

:12:25.:12:28.

title, he's that good on this surface, he just loves it. He just

:12:29.:12:33.

glides around the court, he's wonderful to watch on this surface.

:12:34.:12:36.

We can look at a couple of shots that he played against Wawrinka.

:12:37.:12:42.

He's got a perfect grass court game, hasn't he? He has gummy reminds me

:12:43.:12:46.

of Roger Taylor. He has a similar sort of playing style, very

:12:47.:12:50.

classical. He understands where to hit the ball... The different spins,

:12:51.:13:01.

he's got the slice, his serve is so effective, and the results prove it

:13:02.:13:05.

as well, three times in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Playing

:13:06.:13:09.

in Stuttgart, getting through to the final as well, so he's got a lot of

:13:10.:13:15.

matches under his belt. And he's in amazing shape as well. When he comes

:13:16.:13:19.

into this grass court season, knows is a chance for him to do something

:13:20.:13:23.

special. He always feels like on this surface, he's as good as

:13:24.:13:27.

anybody. Some of the shots. The field, with the racket? Yeah, he

:13:28.:13:33.

loves it. He knows when to come in, when the slide serve out. He's an

:13:34.:13:44.

all-round grass court player. As far as Jeremy Chardy is concerned, well,

:13:45.:13:49.

which Jeremy Chardy is going to turn up? He can be a bit unpredictable?

:13:50.:13:54.

Exactly right. He's got a big first serve, so he's going to be dangerous

:13:55.:14:00.

on serve. He also has powerful groundstrokes, but that's about

:14:01.:14:03.

where it ends. We don't always know if those groundstrokes are going to

:14:04.:14:08.

find the mark. And that's the question - is it a day when he's

:14:09.:14:12.

feeling it and he can be almost unplayable? Or will he sprayed it

:14:13.:14:18.

around a little bit? But these players are always dangerous to play

:14:19.:14:23.

but only always dangerous. It would not surprise me if there were some

:14:24.:14:27.

tie-breakers in this match, to be honest. I can't see Chardy breaking

:14:28.:14:37.

Lopez, but I can see him hold in -- I can see him hold in his own serve

:14:38.:14:41.

as well. We are actually on the air for another 45 minutes on BBC Two.

:14:42.:14:45.

After that, coverage will be moving on to the red button. We could be in

:14:46.:14:49.

for a long one. Feliciano Lopez, that left-handed typically, it's

:14:50.:14:54.

such a weapon on grass, more than any other surface? Yeah, because he

:14:55.:15:00.

has the flight one, -- he has the flat serve and the sliced serve. On

:15:01.:15:05.

this surface especially, it stays very low, and so it's difficult to

:15:06.:15:17.

attack. But really, on a slow hard court, for instance, I don't know if

:15:18.:15:22.

guys can get it back into play more often, he gets so many more cheap

:15:23.:15:26.

points with it on this surface, it is a devastating weapon. Got through

:15:27.:15:32.

last year, losing to Lucas Pouille, another of the danger men on the

:15:33.:15:37.

grass courts? I was just thinking that we have had all of these upsets

:15:38.:15:40.

here, and you look at someone like Lucas Pouille, you think how many

:15:41.:15:44.

dangerous floater there are at Wimbledon. There's so many of them

:15:45.:15:49.

that could do well. It's going to be a fascinating, well, the rest of

:15:50.:15:54.

this tournament, and also Wimbledon, because there are a lot of danger

:15:55.:15:57.

men out there now, more so than for many years. And you talk about the

:15:58.:16:02.

training. Feliciano Lopez is 35 years of age, it is the trend in the

:16:03.:16:07.

men's game now, that the players are going on, and actually improving as

:16:08.:16:14.

they get into their mid-30s. The work they do now, with the diet and

:16:15.:16:18.

the physicality of the training sessions, the people they travel

:16:19.:16:23.

with, there's no questions any more, they know exactly what they have to

:16:24.:16:29.

do. Everything is meticulous in their recovery, what they do before

:16:30.:16:32.

and after the match, how much to practise, how much not to. They keep

:16:33.:16:38.

themselves in immaculate shape. The pin-up man for me is Roger Federer,

:16:39.:16:42.

and I think everybody is following. And they think, why not, we can keep

:16:43.:16:50.

on going! It is incredible, six months out, comes back and playing

:16:51.:16:54.

better than ever. He could be the Wimbledon favourite, in many

:16:55.:17:00.

people's eyes. And from any, you would have to say that. He's playing

:17:01.:17:07.

on a grass court in Halle this week. Peter is now on his way to join

:17:08.:17:10.

Andrew Castle for this one. ANDREW CASTLE: Thank you. And such

:17:11.:17:15.

is Peter's athleticism, he's already here! Just settling into position

:17:16.:17:22.

here, as we all are, for what could be a very entertaining match. Having

:17:23.:17:31.

a look at the French rankings, he's ranked number 80 in the world,

:17:32.:17:35.

Jeremy Chardy, a Davis Cup stalwart over the years and former Wimbledon

:17:36.:17:40.

junior champion, somebody who has always played well on grass. Looking

:17:41.:17:47.

at where he ranks in France, with a world ranking of number 80, he is

:17:48.:17:55.

number ten in France. Such is the depth in French tennis. And the same

:17:56.:18:05.

can be said of Spain as well. So, it's Lopez to serve. The last of the

:18:06.:18:16.

quarterfinal positions to be filled, the winner of this, to play Berdych.

:18:17.:18:44.

I did not actually see who that hit, was it a ball girl? They're a pretty

:18:45.:18:56.

tough breed! Did you go to that school? You mention them every day,

:18:57.:19:07.

it seems! They're great! It is a girls school, so no. I thought you

:19:08.:19:13.

might have gone BEFORE the sex change! Andy Lopez has opened up

:19:14.:19:28.

serving big, serving firmly. Settled into his rhythm straightaway.

:19:29.:20:23.

Jeremy Chardy has just really been a spectator in this game. It is a

:20:24.:20:33.

premium, against the big servers, to maintain concentration on your own

:20:34.:20:35.

serve. Jeremy Chardy is a man known for

:20:36.:21:05.

hitting winners and losers on that forehand side. Nobody in France,

:21:06.:21:20.

including Guy Forget, really knows if the forehand is going to go in on

:21:21.:21:25.

that day, but if it does, it is a devastating weapon. He beat Jordan

:21:26.:21:33.

Thompson in the second round of qualifying, so Jordan Thompson was a

:21:34.:21:37.

lucky loser before coming in and beating Andy Murray. He beat Liam

:21:38.:21:46.

Broady of Britain in the first round proper, Jeremy Chardy.

:21:47.:22:04.

PETER FLEMING: And he will be just a little tight in this first game. So,

:22:05.:22:10.

it's fought with danger for him. ANDREW CASTLE: Three of their five

:22:11.:22:37.

matches have gone the distance. A couple of errant ball tosses from

:22:38.:23:53.

Jeremy Chardy already, so something not entirely right at this moment.

:23:54.:24:10.

Well, that was quite deep in the court, a reasonable defensive lob,

:24:11.:24:23.

but dispatched. Yeah, very athletically.

:24:24.:24:59.

Inconsistency is something which has always characterised Shami Chardy's

:25:00.:25:11.

game, but dropping serve so early against Feliciano Lopez could be

:25:12.:25:13.

serious. That's a big first serve, especially

:25:14.:26:11.

when you consider it hit the line. No chance at all on the return.

:26:12.:26:16.

Slowing it down by about 20%. If Lopez can keep the pace on his

:26:17.:26:47.

serve, he can make it very difficult for Lula Chardy to return. The

:26:48.:26:54.

Frenchman has long groundstrokes, long take-backs. So it often makes

:26:55.:27:00.

it difficult for him to time the shot. But when he DOES time it well,

:27:01.:27:03.

he can really power it down. Yes, a couple of double faults, but

:27:04.:27:21.

the pace is impressive. No particular footwork from Chardy

:27:22.:27:33.

there. . If you want to get in touch about

:27:34.:28:11.

anything, any observations, plenty of ways to get in touch. John says -

:28:12.:28:23.

interested to know your thoughts on the tennis ball, is it too quick now

:28:24.:28:28.

with the latest rackets? A slightly softer ball could make the game more

:28:29.:28:31.

enjoyable to watch, Peter Fleming? Well, the balls are hard but they're

:28:32.:28:37.

not light. I think essentially it is the same ball which has been played

:28:38.:28:43.

with for 50 years, ever since they started coming out of a can, which

:28:44.:28:47.

was about 30 five and 40 years ago. A softer ball, by the way, the

:28:48.:28:53.

players would not go for that, it would wear out pretty quickly. But I

:28:54.:29:00.

understand, grass court tennis is very different. Simon says - my son

:29:01.:29:06.

is a budding county player, why do so many juniors go abroad to reach

:29:07.:29:11.

the next level, what can GB tennis do about it? It is a good question

:29:12.:29:17.

but there are so many good academies around the world now. You've got to

:29:18.:29:22.

specialise now at an earlier age than before. Rafael Nadal is opening

:29:23.:29:26.

his Academy full-time from September. It is tough to resist the

:29:27.:29:31.

best in the world. It's the French club system which

:29:32.:29:46.

has produced all of these players, places to go to socialise, families

:29:47.:29:52.

go, tournaments as well. You've got to play. And they have millions of

:29:53.:29:59.

people who play in tournaments, the French.

:30:00.:30:15.

Lopez is putting this set to bed. That slice backhand is more

:30:16.:30:22.

effective on this surface because it skids through and stays low. It

:30:23.:30:28.

becomes an attacking shot. On a clay-court or a slow hard court it's

:30:29.:30:30.

very much a neutral shot. This is a horror, very poor. Well,

:30:31.:31:20.

in a strange sort of way, it's the good news, bad news, for Jeremy

:31:21.:31:25.

Chardy. The bad news is he lost the fist set. The good news, he has a

:31:26.:31:29.

couple of games now to kind of pull himself together. To see if he can't

:31:30.:31:34.

start off on good terms in the second set. He's got to just write

:31:35.:31:41.

this set off now and say - all right, let's try and find a rhythm.

:31:42.:32:06.

Wow. He just hit that right through him.

:32:07.:32:16.

Chardy is standing right there, just couldn't react quickly enough.

:32:17.:32:41.

His arm is just, it's well-oiled and ready to do damage. Lopez, 5-0.

:32:42.:32:51.

That's not much in the way of entertainment, unless you really

:32:52.:32:55.

enjoy a one way spectacle. Like Peter Fleming says, it could change

:32:56.:32:58.

into the second set. 14 minutes played in this second round match at

:32:59.:33:03.

Queen's Club. It has been a tournament full of surprises with

:33:04.:33:09.

Jordan Thompson beating Andy Murray. Tsonga losing second round to Gilles

:33:10.:33:15.

Muller. Wawrinka going out in the fist round to the man we are

:33:16.:33:22.

enjoying here, Feliciano Lopez. Raonic lost. Who knows what will

:33:23.:33:27.

happen next or who your favourite is. I think personally Grigor

:33:28.:33:32.

Dimitrov. It's the manner he's going about his business, others will

:33:33.:33:37.

differ. Yeah. It's hard to bet against Marin Cilic the way he

:33:38.:33:45.

played in fills first matches here. Former champion here. Still plenty

:33:46.:33:51.

to play for. Chardy is ready to playwright now. It looks like he's

:33:52.:34:04.

got a bus to catch. Most odd this. He's having trouble with that.

:34:05.:34:08.

Perhaps nerves have got to him just a tad.

:34:09.:35:46.

Feliciano Lopez support box. Plenty of them in there. That's Mark Lopez

:35:47.:35:52.

there, you see, in the middle. Fabulous doubles player.

:35:53.:36:08.

Mark Lopez, a great doubles player. The stylish hat, naturally, David

:36:09.:36:23.

Beckham. Is I believe that's little Romeo with him, the second of his

:36:24.:36:27.

four children. He's a very keen tennis player.

:36:28.:36:43.

David Beckham due at Glastonbury this weekend. Clamping, no doubt.

:36:44.:37:16.

6-1 in double quick time. I'd be surprised if there's been a quicker

:37:17.:37:28.

set this week. 19 minutes. A little confusing. Now on the women's tour,

:37:29.:37:33.

the WTA Tour, coaches are allowed to come out and say a few words.

:37:34.:37:37.

On the Men's Tour that is not something that is allowed. In Davis

:37:38.:37:41.

Cup you have your coach sitting alongside you. You will have Lyon

:37:42.:37:47.

Smith, talking away. If you were coaching Jeremy Chardy now, Peter

:37:48.:37:50.

Fleming, you would have to be honest with him, wouldn't you? It depends

:37:51.:37:54.

on him, I guess, what would it be - move your feet? Well, yes. Move your

:37:55.:38:03.

feet. But, first things first, relax on your ball toss. Try and settle

:38:04.:38:09.

down so that you can put the ball toss in the same spot twice in a

:38:10.:38:14.

row. And you've got to serve. You've got to be aggressive with your

:38:15.:38:18.

serve. If you miss the first, even go for a few big seconds. Get a few

:38:19.:38:26.

holes and then you can start to assert yourself. Put a bit of

:38:27.:38:29.

scoreboard pressure on your opponent. Don't be afraid to show a

:38:30.:38:33.

little bit of animation. Show the crowd. Use the energy of the crowd

:38:34.:38:37.

by showing you are enthusiastic to be out there. You are keen to play.

:38:38.:38:43.

We could send him an espresso, a single shot to get him going? That

:38:44.:38:46.

is a good point. Sometimes when you are playing in front of a big crowd

:38:47.:38:53.

and you aren on wrong end of one way traffic, it becomes very inhibiting

:38:54.:38:58.

and you start to go into your shell because you are embarrassed. That is

:38:59.:39:07.

probably the wrong reaction. So a very important service game with new

:39:08.:39:11.

tennis balls for Jeremy Chardy. Oh, oh. This is definitely into

:39:12.:39:38.

yipish territory. It's difficult to share anything with the crowd at

:39:39.:39:44.

that point, apart from - somebody come and take me away. I speak with

:39:45.:39:52.

bitter experience! Lopez, on the other hand, knows, put every ball

:39:53.:39:57.

back into play now. Just see if you can't scrape a break here and, he

:39:58.:39:59.

might just break. Chardy keeps hoping his timing might

:40:00.:41:41.

come good. Had doesn't appear to have done.

:41:42.:41:48.

You know he can hit the ball safely into Lopez's sliced backhand just

:41:49.:41:54.

about any time he wants. COMMENTATOR: In fact, it hasn't been

:41:55.:42:45.

a great game from Lopez, this game. It's almost as though he knows, all

:42:46.:42:52.

he needs to do is get one more break of serve and his opponent is done.

:42:53.:43:01.

That is always a terrible mind-set to have. All you have to do

:43:02.:43:07.

mind-set. Well done. Not having an easy time

:43:08.:43:24.

out there, the Frenchman. Mind you, there is enough French players

:43:25.:43:28.

who've made everyone else's life a misery over the last few years, such

:43:29.:43:32.

is their depth. You can hardly win a tournament these days without having

:43:33.:43:35.

to get through a couple of Frenchmen, there are so many good

:43:36.:43:41.

players. Led still by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Do keep your eyes peeled for

:43:42.:43:52.

an upcoming player, 23 years of aged, 15th in the world. A winner

:43:53.:43:54.

last week. He beat Lopez in the final. Had a

:43:55.:44:06.

great run last year at the US Open. Beat Rafael Nadal. Next French man

:44:07.:44:10.

perhaps to make a Grand Slam final. Has he made a

:44:11.:44:36.

massive improvement over the tennis he showed last year, I'm not sure

:44:37.:44:50.

Practiced in the off season in Dubai with Roger Federer. That will help.

:44:51.:45:56.

Lopez continues his dominance on the first serve. He's only lost one

:45:57.:46:02.

point when he's put the fist serve into play. In fact only lost five

:46:03.:46:04.

points on his serve in all. They're coming for you, Peter. Away

:46:05.:47:23.

it goes. Chardy has settled into this match a little. That's a third

:47:24.:47:28.

service hold for him. He's 2-1 up, second set.

:47:29.:47:34.

Chardy 2-1 up. More competitive set. We will be right back with this. We

:47:35.:47:39.

can remind you what happened today. Marin Cilic, too good for the

:47:40.:47:43.

19-year-old American. The former champion and US Open champion goes

:47:44.:47:50.

through 6-0, 6-4. Another former champion through, this was a really

:47:51.:48:02.

competitive match, going three sets. Jordan Thompson won the crowd over

:48:03.:48:13.

but Sam Querrey winning. Thanasis Kokkinakis is not the same player

:48:14.:48:18.

that put out Raonic earlier in the champion, Medvedev winning that one.

:48:19.:48:21.

We are back tomorrow: Just about ten minutes to go before

:48:22.:48:33.

we go to the Red Button today. Sit back and enjoy this one.

:48:34.:48:38.

COMMENTATOR: Thank you for this update. Waiting to see if it become

:48:39.:48:42.

as more competitive match. Half an hour played. Over in Germany, Roger

:48:43.:48:55.

Federer 7-6 up, 2-2, against the left hander. He had a good season,

:48:56.:49:01.

not but not as good as his younger brother who maded it through to the

:49:02.:49:05.

quarter-final of that tournament as we head towards Wimbledon, a

:49:06.:49:07.

week-and-a-half away. He said, I'm OK. My brother is

:49:08.:49:27.

special. I can't compare with him. Like Veus and

:49:28.:49:41.

Serena. Her younger player just happens to be "the greatest."

:49:42.:50:06.

That is an error, suspect it? 15-30. In a rally against one of the great

:50:07.:50:48.

servers. Very disappointed with that. Three or four rows back in

:50:49.:50:55.

front of the members' pavilion. How ungentlemanly. Snagged it out of

:50:56.:50:57.

that gentleman in front. You get the feeling, had the ball

:50:58.:51:13.

been a foot shorter he would have dove on top of the guy to catch it.

:51:14.:51:17.

He should have done it. He should have opened up a pocket and watch

:51:18.:51:29.

the baldies appear in. Pretty good hold from 0-30 down.

:51:30.:51:36.

Doubles taking place here. I was telling you about how entertaining

:51:37.:51:44.

Mark Lopez is as a doubles player with Feliciano Lopez. Watching from

:51:45.:51:47.

the players box, supporting his friend. They lost in the first

:51:48.:51:54.

round, to the recent French Open champions.

:51:55.:52:07.

The American kiwi pair. I beg your pardon.

:52:08.:52:40.

Now Chardy's starting to settle in. It will will be his fourth service

:52:41.:52:48.

hold in a row. An entirely different proposition now than he was in set

:52:49.:52:50.

number one. This is funny # BBC tennis. Bonnie

:52:51.:53:31.

saying. I was one 20 years ago. Best week of my life even though I was

:53:32.:53:39.

hit with a serve. Glad you recovered OK. They get together at 8. 30am at

:53:40.:53:43.

their two schools and get bussed in together. They do each other's hair.

:53:44.:53:49.

As I said, did you go to the same place. It's plaited and crossed

:53:50.:53:58.

over. GCSEs next year or a couple of years away. They are doing a great

:53:59.:54:04.

job here. Tony says. Why don't players play serve and volley on

:54:05.:54:08.

grass? Because the game has changed and guys return serve so well. They

:54:09.:54:13.

are adept at hitting passing shots with the new springs that put more

:54:14.:54:17.

spin on the ball and allow the ball to dip. It's almost taking on a life

:54:18.:54:24.

of its own. Guys haven't served and volleyed on other surfaces. They are

:54:25.:54:28.

not as good as it. Were it still might work on this surface, they

:54:29.:54:34.

just don't like to do it. So it's almost left the game. Lopez is

:54:35.:54:41.

something of a throwback, but he doesn't serve volley too much. His

:54:42.:54:45.

passing shots go past so quickly now, you can't move more than a

:54:46.:54:49.

foot. It's like a well taken penalty in football. You can't save it, even

:54:50.:54:52.

with perfect technique. Sdwrous add one final piece to that

:54:53.:55:16.

puzzle. The courts are so good. I mean, it's like playing on a hard

:55:17.:55:21.

court, virtually. So the returner knows that he's got a decent bounce

:55:22.:55:25.

on every return. This's a dive bomber. Got the best

:55:26.:55:45.

seat in the house there. -- That's a dive bomber. Got the best seat in

:55:46.:55:47.

the house there. Well Chardy's done well changing his

:55:48.:56:04.

serving form around. He still needs a bit of work on the returns.

:56:05.:56:14.

Of course, hasn't had a lot of opportunities to practice it.

:56:15.:56:21.

Struggling to touch the ball. Landing gear down. About 35 seconds

:56:22.:57:29.

away or so for landing. It's a line ball. Seriously, is that how long it

:57:30.:57:41.

takes to get to Heathrow from here? No, I'm just guessing. How far is

:57:42.:57:45.

it, another 10 miles. Probably. Travelling at 180 miles an hour.

:57:46.:57:52.

Still three minutes. No. It's three miles a minute. Right, so. Another

:57:53.:57:56.

three minutes. We are coming off air in about a

:57:57.:58:08.

minute. It will take me a long time to work the maths out. We will

:58:09.:58:12.

continue this match on the Red Button all the way to the end. Back

:58:13.:58:16.

tomorrow with the quarter-final action.

:58:17.:58:35.

Fabulous. 4-3. He has second the settled set, it's a lot closer than

:58:36.:58:46.

the first. We come to the end of our tran

:58:47.:58:58.

mission here on BBC Two. As Andrew said, if you want to continue

:58:59.:59:02.

watching, you can, it's available on the Red Button. We will
