6th Round - St Helens v Hull FC Rugby League: Challenge Cup

When the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitated the action of

the Tiger. Stiffen the sinews. Summon up the blood. This guy is

their nature with hard favoured rage. And lend the eye a terrible

aspect. Let it dry through the portage of the head, the brass

cannon, led the brow. Swilled with the wild and wasteful

ocean. Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide. Oh, hard the

breath, bend up every spirit to his full height.

Well, who else could we get to build up to a match like this between two

greats of the game but one of our own greats, Ray French, with the

words of the Bard. The whole FC fans are in early, they are applauding

their team as they start to warm up -- Hull FC. The Saints fans all

trickling in, enjoying the sunshine, a few pints of beer. But as the

teams come out to warm up, the atmosphere is building. It is a

beautiful day here at St Helens. Hull warming up. We have a Bard of

our own in Brian Noble, alongside Warrington Wolves' Ashton Sims and

Jamie Peacock. When I made my way leisurely across the M 62, and I'm

sure you had a quiet morning, what were you doing? I was running the

leaves half marathon. You need some challenges as a player in retirement

and it was a challenge in this weather. I did it with Barrie

McDermott, Keith senior and Terry O'Connor. You are a competitor, who

came first? I put my hand up, they came first that double helpings at

dinner afterwards. They are not here to answer back. It is a beautiful

day, Ashton is, what will the weather do? It will tire the forward

said, the kicking game will be crucial for any success by either

team. Two fantastic teams, doing all right in Super League, it should be

a cracker. Two teams in form, with Blair and with size in the middle

and to kicking games, and I am with Ashton, it will decide the game. Do

happened to Leeds since he left them. Let's have a look at the table

to see how these two matchup at the moment. Hull FC have been on a

really good run of form, they sit third in the table. What has been

the key? Their power game, they rumble forward, talent or on the

fringes, Jamie saw on outstanding form. St Helens are not far behind,

they have been in sensational form and it is coincidental, getting

their best players back and seeing the best from them. For Hull, no

Frank Prichard, no Sika Manu, they have gone to captain their

countries. What do you think? I applaud them for it, the

international game is stronger than the domestic game and we need to

strengthen the domestic game. Those guys are going to captain their

country, the pinnacle of any sportsman's career. What has Lee

Radford had to say, he has been talking to Damien Johnson. No Frank

Prichard or Sika Manu, they have gone to the Pacific coast, was that

the contractural thing or an arrangement? Nothing contractural,

they have both been selected for their home nations and it wasn't

something we were prepared to stand in a way of. Obviously we would love

to have been with us today but it is not the case. We have players coming

back in who can be just as influential and it is down to them.

Is letting them go a gesture to the international game or a bit of a

gamble? It is probably both. It is not arrogance or anything, I don't

want it to come across like that but as a club, we support the

international game. I think it is why we are deficient as a support

when you compare us to rugby union and anything we can do to benefit or

help catch up, we are prepared to do that. We have a strong 17 that will

participate today and they will have some real influence on the outcome,

not the fellas that are not here. Brian, from a coach's point of view,

is it a brave decision good man management? If he had said no,

presumably they have been happy. It is right decision, just to reinforce

what said, but they have do concentrate on what they have, like

Castleford did. He has replacements in Minichiello and Mark Ellis, they

are internationals. There might come a time when he thinks that would be

a handy move for Frank Prichard or Sika Manu, but he hasn't got them

and he will concentrate on what he has got and it is the right decision

for me. Let's have a look at what he has gone. Gareth Ellis is back, how

important is that, Ashton? It is important, having him

psychologically, for all of the other players. He is an

international, he has played in the NRL and has been the top forward

here for sometime. Top players all over the park. They are missing

Prichard and Sika Manu but they have plenty there. I think one Hull's

strong points this year is their strength in depth, they lose to

internationals and they bring in and Minichiello. Who else would you pick

out? Jamie Shah has been on fire at the back -- Jamie Shaul. The

creativity of Leon Pryce and Marc Sneyd, and Houghton is the live feed

of the team. They really deserve credit. The St Helens team are

warming up as well. Not exactly a small bunch, are they? Look at the

size of some of these, Walmsley, McCarthy-Scarsbrook. Hull will have

to bring their tin out, they have hard guys running after them.

Probably the headline for this team, Jonny Lomax has been brought back

gently but is named at full-back today. It is exciting for St Helens,

he is a dynamic player, can break tackles, carried the ball, brings

the ball back well from kecks. We said kicks will bring it back and he

does it better than anyone in the side. He gets the nod over

McDonnell, which is a lot of trust. He scores tries, assists in tries,

massively influential. If you look at the pays to complement Lomax in

Percival and Owens, Fages and walls, the challenge is the same, get the

big fellas then the field with the kicking game -- Walshe. If you are

into statistics or superstitions, let me log this one at you. In five

of the last six decades, when the year has ended in a six, St Helens

have one. Jamie, you have bad luck in your eyes. Well, Bell they have

wondered then! It correlates and it is a nice that, but, come on --

well, they have won it then! I will move swiftly on. Yesterday, we had a

fantastic day and Castleford, Castleford against Salford. It was a

great game. Let's look back through the eyes of the Salford owner.

Gabrielle Lexi, who is going to win? Salford! And who is going to score

the first try? Junior! It is over three years since I took over the

club and when I bought the club, I didn't even know how many players

make up the team. It is not the kind of game you make money out. It is

just my love for the game. What is the name of the Castleford ground?

The Jungle! Castleford Tigers. We are here. Trust me, nothing beats a

day at watching the rugby league. Sia ripping our whole. Junior cell

is over again. Louis up to the line, threads it through, wonderful kick,

he is in again. McShane, ten metres out, little chip to the corner. Back

he comes, over goes Webster. We are keeping them in the game.

Good hands, quick hands, Mulligan is away. Great tackle, O Brien. Matt

Beacon, his second of the game. Hello, made, are you all right

pressure Mark good, made. Castleford having to come from behind to lead

18-12 quick thinking by McShane to kick it on and get the pass away and

Denny Solomona has scored... Pass -- possibly. The on field decision is a

try and I can't overturn that. I can't believe they have given that,

that is never, ever a try. One, two, three, four, five, six.

McShane dances down the blindside. McShane has made something out of

absolutely nothing. 20 of time, let's not panic. -- plenty. Straight

to Denny Solomona. Outpaces Mercer love. A very fine Castleford win. No

matter how much use awk or feel sorry for yourselves, it is not

going to change the score. We lost it, we are going to concentrate now

on Super League, getting to the top eight and that is what matters.

Gabriel, this is the Tiger. Steve, well done, made. -- made. I hope you

make it all the way now. Thank you to Salford. You have

worked with Koukash, he is very much a Marmite character and he loves a

run-in with the authorities, but giving he has been good for rugby

league? He is allowed to have an opinion, he saved the Salford club.

He put his money in and got it going and it has been a bit stop start but

it looks back on track. A bad result yesterday, which is unusual, they

are going very well and he has bought an opinion and sometimes

people get upset when he prefers it, but he has a right to one. With a

6-point reduction, Tim seems to have gone back on the front line of it.

What do you think of that and is he taking the right track? He is

clearly going to appeal it in whatever shape or form and thinks it

will be successful, but we don't know until it is out in the Open.

Everyone has a right to appeal if they think they have been wronged.

You have come from Australia where rugby union is king and doesn't need

to fight for publicity, but you a character like that needs to get the

publicity? I like his character, I don't care what anyone thinks, he

puts his heart and soul into the club. People can put that the league

say what they want, but he is the one out there putting his money in

and I think he is doing well -- people can say what they want. The

bottom line is Castleford are into the hat and we will have the draw

for the quarterfinals. Four teams are already in the hat for the

quarterfinals, Catalan went through on a Friday night, as did

Huddersfield, who knocked out the holders Leeds Rhinos. And Warrington

Wolves got past Oldham. Four games today, obviously the one we have got

here. One already a result, Wakefield have beaten to lose --

Toulouse. Could we have a shock on the cards in Halifax, where it is

18-18 with Windows. That could be interesting to yourselves. Fantastic

to be through, how did Oldham fare against you? Don't look at the

scoreline and think it was easy, they ripped into us for the first

ten minutes, 6- nil at the 15 and we scored a try and once we were into

our groove, we were OK but Oldham yesterday, they really put their

dukes up. Well, the atmosphere is building really, really nicely here.

Let's look ahead to today's game between two teams who have a rich

history in the Challenge Cup. Here is Dave Woods.

The magic of the cup was woven into Hull FC's history in 1914 when they

beat Wakefield Trinity in the final. Seven decades would pass before they

were to lift the trophy again, a replay in 1982 at Elland Road

settling the score. In the time it took Hull to Windows Challenge Cups,

St Helens had bagged five, including one of the defining Wembley moments

in 1961. Saint then lifted back Challenge Cups at the start of the

Super League era. On both occasions, bulldozing Bradford. Enter the

naughties and a golden era for the club, five more successful cup

campaigns. Hull's last final triumph came 11 years ago, beating Leeds by

just a point, with help from a local lad. Paul Cook sailing through!

There has only been one Wembley meeting between these two, in 2008.

A 12 point win and a 12 Challenge Cup victory for the Saints' bulging

cabinet. So pedigree with the home team, form and Momentum definitely

with Hull as they sit higher in the Super League table and won their

last meeting just over a month ago. It couldn't have been much tighter,

that game a month ago, just one point in it, so what might be the

difference today? Jamie, what is the Saint Helen 's game plan? Seven days

ago, the Super League layers were having to deal with snow, seven days

later the sunshine is out. We spoke about Hull's brawn but I believe

brains is important today. What do I mean with brains in rugby league?

Game management. We're going to speak to Jon Wilkin here. The St

Helens captain, the man I believe is key for this. Speaking about game

management, how will you influence the today? Completion, control of

the ball, the weather is beautiful so energy is important today, we've

got to manage that. Castleford manage their energy better than

Salford yesterday and came out strong. Big day, big emotional

battle than we want to win the cup this year and go to Wembley. I'm

going to speak to one more player. I'm going to look at one more

player, James Roby. I think he's another general of the side, the

brains behind it, one of the fittest players I've seen play the game. His

fitness will dictate where he sent the ball, will he look for the Hull

players who are tired in this defensive line? I think he will be

key to a Saint Helen 's win. James Roby much lauded as number nine.

International honours that have gone with him. There's a pretty important

number nine as well for Hull FC, Danny Houghton tops the charts

pretty much every season. As the top tackler. He's been with them for a

number of years. This could be the key head-to-head tween the two

number nines. Here is Dave Woods. One of the key battles this

afternoon is at hooker, where there are matchwinners on either side of

the pitch. For Saint it is the talismanic James Roby, who has been

one of the best all-round players in Super League for a decade. He is

renowned for spotting gaps, director runs and relentless tackling. Now

30, he's top of Super League this season in runs from dummy half. So

fast, so strong, great try. But he will come under extreme pressure

from his opposite nine, Danny Houghton. No one in Super League

works harder than the Hull FC vice captain. He was the only man to make

more tackles than James Roby last season. He is currently made 30 more

tackles than any other player this term, an average of 45 game. Expect

fireworks the hookers this afternoon. You know a thing or two

about number nines, what is the difference? Very little, I would say

James Roby is better on game management. He rarely makes a poor

decision as to whether ball is going he can run out of dummy half

committees added a kicking game as he's got older. Massively

influential. He's been in the top three hookers in the world, that is

how I rate him. Danny Houghton is the life and soul of his team, we

seen his tackle numbers, when he sees one of these big Saints

forwards, he'll be off and trying to make metres. He has added a shorter

kicking game, you see him in and around the attacking line, he'll try

to drill a few balls through, very little between them. Why has James

Roby had the international honours but Danny Houghton hasn't had a look

in? It's down to that smartness. He's an unbelievable player,

delivers all the time. He's nine out of ten every week, he very rarely

dips below that, that's one of the reasons sometimes he doesn't get

picked up much, he's exceptional every week. We've talked about the

two missing forwards for Hull FC but they've still got a big forward

pack, how is it key to the way they play? Liam Watts, Scott Tyler,

Minichiello, Ellis, they love off-loading. Today in a very hot

game like this, couple of floats, changes of direction by Danny

Houghton, it'll be key for Hull FC's success today. Who are the key ones

for them? Gareth Ellis, he's one of those players whose inspirational,

in the form of his life at the back end of his career. He's

inspirational because blokes next to him will play 10% better because

he's stood next to him because he expects great standards. What about

Mark Minichiello? He's a beast on the edge, strong, real bottom heavy,

thick legs, keeps the legs pumping. He's got a great off-load, too. I

expect him to have a big match, especially with all the talk about

Prichard and Manu out today. How key is the forward back to bringing in

their halves? Massively important, they roll them forward, we've seen

Saints warming up trying to control ruck speed, they recognise it. When

you get Marc Sneyd and Leon Pryce on the front foot they are going to

kick the ball pretty well. What does he bring to Hull FC? Marc Sneyd? He

had the ability to breadline and bass, now it's about game management

and smarts, he understands how the game needs to be played. What does

the style of the sets look like? He needs to do that today if Hull are

going to win. All of his experience against a young whippersnapper in

Theo Fages. How do they matter? The highlight will be an five. Don't

forget John Luke Walsh who has a lot of experience. He's come from

Salford and people weren't sure, there was?. Doing all the things

being asked of him now, he's smart, can make a break, got a kicking

game, can organise the way things want to play. He's deserved his

spot, in terrific form at the moment. Look at his assists,

attacking kicks, he's coming to the fore. St Helens want him to control,

attack, take the line on. He's got a few pork pies at the bottom. He's

got what? What buy, try. Correction at the porkpie, try.

They've taken time bringing him into the team, Theo Fages. What has he

brought? That young enthusiasm. Greenwood on the left edge there.

Theo Fages was sensational, got man of the match. He was great, good at

Salford last year and he's put it up a level again at Saints. He's got an

exceptional running game will stop having Greenwood outside him allows

him to exploit it. People are frightened about what Joe Greenwood

can do, forget about Theo Fages. He will score a try like we are about

to say here. People questioning why St Helens didn't bring him in

immediately, why do you think they did? I think the rest of the team

were playing well. They were experimenting with different things.

Into the new system, finding new players in and around him. He's a

young man very confident in his own ability. It took time. It takes time

to balance some things sometimes. How long does it take for a player

to get the different systems team plays? You have two member he has a

language barrier, English isn't his natural language. It's taken two or

three months to settle into the squad can understand the system.

It's taken him a little time to understand Keiron Cunningham. He's

been talking to Damian Johnson. St Helens have a great relationship

with this cup competition, so have you, do you get as excited when it

comes around again each season? Yeah, every year is a new challenge,

we did quite good last year and probably felt earlier than we felt

we should have. We have got a lot of history in the Challenge Cup as a

club and me personally myself. Every year is a new challenge and we're

playing against a really good side to in the competition. What Nick are

you in, your own team? 3-1 against Leeds and toughed it out against

Castleford last week. We're in good shape, good players back, they've

added to how we play. There's good spirit in the camp at the moment.

Couple of good performances together and it's a nice sunshiny day out

there, nice day of football. Jonny Lomax has had a horrific year with

that in the injury and has hit the ground running. We all know how good

he is, we've said it for a long time, Robert Piggott Saints fans,

everybody involved in the club, probably has never had a good look

at Johnny because he's been out for continuous seasons. The longer we

can keep Johnny fit, there's a lot of good stuff around journey when he

plays. What does he give you specifically? Great individual

player. He is, and such a good leader for us. He's one of our

seniors, been around a long time, people haven't seen a lot of Johnny,

they don't realise how old he is, how experienced he is. He does lead

the team really well and he's got hindsight at the back of the field.

Would luck. Thank you very much. You don't have to be a Saint Helen 's

fans to be happy to see Donnie Lomax back with the problems he's had.

It's the way he carries the ball back. -- Jonny Lomax. He's been in

the system for- five years, I think you'll break the game open today. He

knows when to join the line and find the past. He's so talented. He's

strong, looks healthy, massive on this Saints team. What lived was it

for the rest of the players? They seemed so thrilled when he scored

the first try. Tough injury, to one of your best players. His comeback

in and given the Saints a new dimension. Like Brian said, he can

hit that long ball. Then he can really take the line on. Do you

think he can be the real momentum kicker for St Helens, who started at

times? Where Saints have the extra is in the brains, six, seven, nine

and 13... I think that'll be the gamebreaker, how they manage the

game. It's an infectious thing when you get that kind of lift through a

team, how important is that emotion as a coach? It's great to get

players back who you think... Perceval is back. Looking healthy at

the moment. This is a very dangerous Hull team. We haven't spoken about

Jamie Shaul, he's been telling it, 10-15 metres carrying. If they find

any space or ruck speed they could be dangerous. What's the difference

between Lomax and Shaul? Lomax is a slightly better footballer. Shaul is

blisteringly quick. You talk about it, under the sticks. Jonny Lomax

can influence the game in many ways, a kick, shortcake, joining the line,

any of those things. -- short kick. Jhonattan Vegas and Dave Ward

commentate. COMMENTATOR: Steve Prescott, who we still miss

very much, who sadly passed where a couple of years ago, is two sums...

Is two sums very much involved today. 14-year-old Taylor leading

out Hull. And nine-year-old Cody leading out St Helens today. Proud

moments for them as well. 25 degrees here today. As we heard

from the fellas, conservation of energy is going to be so important

here. It's amazing how the weather has changed over these last couple

of weeks. Playing in freezing conditions. It seems only days ago.

And here we are at the height of summer. It looks resplendent,

Langtree Park, today. A ground is growing. Travelling numbers from

Hull, two and a half thousand have come across on the 62 from the east

of the country to the west. -- on the Dubai. Jonny Lomax recently

returned from a 15 month lay-off. -- on the M62.

Mark Minichiello back from injury and Leon Pryce five times Challenge

Cup winner. Three of those four Saint Helens. He could have a big

say. He was in our truck yesterday. Richard Silverwood. He's out in the

middle. There's a golden thread woven through the history of both of

these sites. Expectations really high when they start the season.

Which should ensure we have something to relish here today. Both

will feel they can pick a path to Wembley Stadium in August. But after

today only one will survive. What are we thinking ahead of this game,

Jonathan Davies and Ryan Noble? -- Brian. The kicking game is vitally

important. They've got talent to bless both teams. Saints already

going expansive, the kicking game will be the difference when the

weather is hot like this. Theo Fages with a kick in. 'S will be very

happy. That ball short of the 20. The result

it's very difficult to pick a winner. Maybe home advantage in the

cup. This is all about walking out in Wembley in August. It's a

massive, massive prize at the end of this. It's a trap door game, you are

gone, out of the hatch. Very interested in the kicking game,

whether they close Sneyd down. I like the look of Jamie Shaul, such a

broken field runner. He is fantastic. It'll be the platform the

forwards laid for the half-backs. Danny Houghton out of dummy half and

looking left to one of those who returns today, Mark Minichiello. In

the absence of the two missing, Prichard and Manu. Mark Minichiello,

he's had a calf injury keeping him out. He's back today. A little flick

to keep the ball alive. Hull looking to make progress

through Gareth Ellis. A quick play the ball. Horton knocks it. A little

too quick. Great, great post. A quick play the ball. He was on the

front foot. Gareth Ellis looked explosive there. He keeps cropping

up in the middle. Then we'll see Shaul come into the game. Jack

Butland is full-back and Lomax is defending in the line. -- Owens is

full-back. I think you'll move around through the day, Jonny Lomax,

that has been the pattern of his return in the last couple of games.

Part of that presumably to build his match fitness, keep him on the field

to build match fitness. Walsh at dummy half. Inside for Wilkin. Back

to Fages. In terrific form at the moment,

eight matches this season, he has scored nine. Fages goes left of

Perceval, he's gone under the head like a little because his return

from a brief injury absence has also been a big boost for St Helens. It's

back with Walsh. Testing kit here. Going to be dealt with but only in

terms of conceding the drop out by Talanoa. Clever play by Saint

Helens, they go wide, forcing the other wing up. Can't go back and

cover the kick. Good pressure by Saint Helens. First success in terms

of kicking game goes the way of St Helens.

Marc Sneyd with a drop-kick restart. Jonny Lomax dribbles... Walsh had to

get a speed on because it was coming his way. Walmsley threatens to make

the break. Roby at dummy half. Wilkin with a powerhouse effort down

the middle. Saint Helens raging close here. Couple of tackles gone.

Walsh. Lomax in the line. Perceval, who spins away. And reaches out to

score the game's opening try! In the early stages, its first blood St

Helens. They created the overlap to start

but Hull defended really well. They just fell of the tackles. They got

the system right, they had the hit on the ball carrier but

unfortunately, he spins out. Great start, St Helens. They looked to

have solved the problem. They had a three on two but they covered across

really well. Tries to come in from the wing, Curtis Naughton, and

didn't quite come up with the goods. I think Talanoa, Naughton had him,

but he spins in and out of the tackle and unfortunately, Fonua

couldn't help him either. They will be disappointed, because they have

it covered and it is a couple of missed tackles but it is a very good

finish. It all came from a knock-on from Houghton, they have kept

possession and kept the pressure on and come away with a try. Perceval

got an injury in the second round of the season, he ruptured a medial

ligament against Salford, which meant he missed, a long time, this

season. Only his fifth appearance of the 14 he could have played. But he

has a lot of class, people are looking at him to have a big, big

future in this game. He has just put Nabarro chocolate in his mouth, so

he may have to wait a little before he answers this -- a bar of

chocolate. I am pretty confident. Luke Walsh with the conversion

attempt. Nice easy kick to start. It is his

50th kick of the season. Very good kick from Luke Walsh. So St Helens

lead here 6-0. Here we see Walsh and Fages are the architect. Walsh hits

the line but Naughton has to come up with better on the day. They could

have drifted on, but unfortunately, he came in for the hit. There was

just a hint of chocolate in that last bit of analysis from Brian. Is

he a potential England centre this autumn, Mark Percival? I think they

will be looking for a centre. They have been trying to get Jack Reed in

the team from the Brisbane Broncos but he has always been injured. They

have tried Cudjoe, Huddersfield, different combinations so if you put

his hand up at the back end of the year, he will have a chance. It is

simple, play well for your club, you have a chance. Watkins is the

incumbent but they are not going well. We heard there were other

matches taking place today and the last time we saw, Halifax were

drawing against Widnes, but a couple of scores have given Widnes a bit of

a comfort zone, 26-18. That is the only potential upset so far. That

was a great kick by Fages. Cracking kick, they are keen to turn this

whole team around and get the big people... Do the figure of eights in

the middle of the field, use their energy that way, rather than try to

battle their way forward. Smart kick. Back down the middle by Watts.

Houghton again. Ellis shuffling forward. He has just celebrated his

34th birthday, Gareth Ellis, but he still has all the dynamics of a

player you would expect of his pedigree. -- you would expect of a

player of his pedigree. Not a testing kick for Dawson to return.

Just an example of the kicking game. Dawson is playing that that 35, the

last two kicks from Saints, albeit further down the field, where at

five and ten and it takes its toll. Makes it harder to defend because it

exposes the fall back on his own. There is a variety of kickers as

well for St Helens where is there is only one for Hull at the moment. It

makes a huge difference, you don't know how to -- who to chase down.

Luke Walsh stepping up this time I'm putting Hull on the back foot. We

can see the player management they are prepared to go through. Walsh

has kicked the ball really well, Fages twice, Sneyd's effort went

straight into Dawson's hands, so we promise you, for the viewers, it

will take its toll. 12 times Challenge Cup winners, St Helens,

but they have not won it since 2008, against Hull, of course. Hull have

won it three times in their history but famously never at Wembley

Stadium. Most recently, 2005, was in Cardiff. They had the replay win at

Elland Road when they drew with Widnes. Whenever they have played

out to an end result at Wembley, they have lost. They would love to

put that right this year. St Helens are caught offside. Clever dummy

half play. Very clever. Quick play the ball. I think there are a few

offside, you can take your pick. So Hull start from here. Looking for

an early response. What's the drives it in, Houghton picks a bad dummy

heartland comes right to Leon Pryce, who puts that step on, back inside

for the following Danny Houghton. They are celebrating the try but

they are going to have to put the celebration on hold for a moment

because we are going to have to look again. Try says Richard Silverwood,

check the grounding, though, please. Let's hear from Ben Thaler, the

video referee. We'll see the ball is grounded, it has been awarded as a

try. From that angle, can't see very much. The ball is down there. Let's

just make sure it is not lost before that. At that point, that is a try.

Just a job that back to make sure the ball is retained in Houghton's

hand. It is all one movement. There is no double movement there, so that

is fine. It doesn't seem to lose it. This is the angle I want to check,

whether the ball has come out. So whilst it is short there, Momentum

has taken him over the line, it is not a double movement and the other

angle showed the ball was on the ground, so therefore that is going

to be a try. See again on this one, keep it going over. Wright, the ball

is down there, that is a try. So here comes the result. Danny

Houghton gets his fifth try of the season. Hull straight back in the

game and wasn't that typical Leon Pryce? It is brilliant, I think Leon

Pryce sees it very early, the gap between the marker and the first

defender is too big. He has a great step on him, he knows the support is

there, so he just gives it. Leon Pryce, who played and won three

Challenge Cup finals with St Helens. Now against his old club, hoping to

direct Hull the way of Wembley. And if you have not seen this before,

Marc Sneyd's kicking style, there is every reason he should miss this,

given the angle he starts out. It is almost 180 degrees he turns. But he

doesn't miss often. He usually gets them and 86-6.

-- it a 6-6. Take a bow, Leon Pryce. We spoke about it pre-match, any

opportunity he gets. But he needs Danny Houghton on his inside. He has

done that where ever he played. Perhaps hasn't got the ability to go

40 or 50 yards like he used to but he can still exploit the gap. Still

needs to be scored. The thing about Leon Pryce, we might not see him for

big swathes of the game but he does things like that that will win

games. That is his job. That is all you need. Tell you what, that was on

then to go. A bit of vision there and that is given, because Percival

blew in, numbers outside. By the time the ball reached Minichiello, a

couple of St Helens defenders were already on the case. That was high

by Kyle Amor, so panel to going face macro's way. -- a penalty going

Hull's way. We are talking about the kicking game and the way it is

going, a penalty gave Hull field position and they scored from it. I

always have an element of sympathy with the blokes when the little

bloke is going down to ground. Where do you want them to tackle? Not much

a good job of making the yards. Goes left two LS. Ellis tries to take

the line. They they had him wrapped up but think again, Scott Taylor had

other ideas and very quickly, Hull have established a lead. I think Joe

Greenwood has let him go. He had him wrapped up and let him go and he has

fallen over the line. A little soft pass to Scott Taylor but like the St

Helens try, a couple of hits and he gets out of them. Another penalty,

giving them field position. And this is the finish.

It is Jon Wilkin underneath and Joe Greenwood above him. We saw the

example on the Hull line and that is the example on the St Helens line.

Too strong, pumps his leg and get sad. It is great, strong work but

you would expect the tackle. Speaking to Jamie Peacock on the

Super League show, he was saying there are some soft tries being

given in the competition, especially close around the try line and that

is an example of it. As the season progresses, competition for places

and the top four and top eight come into the recognition, you expect

those tackles to be made. So Sneyd again from more or less underneath

the sticks. Over it goes, right into the teeth of those Hull fans. 12-6

they now lead. Here is the try. That little pass he bumps off a couple of

defenders and scores. The Hull forwards are making great yardage

and they give such a good platform, especially for the hooker, Danny

Houghton, and Sneyd as well. Only last month, these two sides met

in the Super League. That was a humdinger, 17-16 Hull won that game

and Marc Sneyd drop goal was the difference. Plenty to go in this

game. Leon Pryce is in the mood. St Helens

fans will know his threat. What establishing position in the

centre of the field. Hull can work right or left from here. Houghton

goes left. Sneyd with a kick back down the middle trying to split the

full-back and the winger. Hitting the post was a bit of a bonus, adds

a second or two before Percival picks it up and the Hull Chase can

get into his face. And a knock-on by Percival. So a big result for Hull.

As Brian said earlier, the kick was taken on the fall, it is a brilliant

kick. The tackle was made on the ten metre line and the knock-on is a

huge bonus for Hull. It is a good hit as well.

Well, they need to conserve a little energy. Don't waste too much on the

celebration. But a big energy lived in respect that St Helens have got

more defending to do here. And Hull can ask some questions. The know. It

feels like a home tie at the moment because the Hull fans are making all

the noise -- Funoa. Ellis pushing forward again, making himself a

handful. Naughton can't keep hold. The referee says play on, does he?

No, he doesn't. St Helens get the lift. I am not sure, it might be a

St Helens knock-on. He has. Owen goes in, the pressure is on. Again,

they have shot it a couple of times. So had he got over there, it would

have been outright, because it was an advantage play. Nothing came of

it, so back they go to the scrum. Not a good pass by Sneyd. Dreadful

pass. Talanoa did very well to hold on. And he has knocked on and Saint

do now get their lift. I think 10,000 Saints fans saw that knock-on

and Mr Silverwood was quickly reminded by his touch judge.

Critical look from Lee Radford. He will be disappointed, because they

had... That was the first tackle and it is just poor execution.

Ad from dummy half and looking left again. Roby goes right and then

central. St Helens with quick hands here. They almost spill it. Wilkin

is back to save the day. Am a Tory. They are looking to go

wide, whereas Hull are looking to go wide -- Amor. Fages with a little

kick over the top, Naughton catches it safely but Hull will have to

start ten yards from their own line. St Helens have got to get a foothold

back in the game. They are allowing runs like this from Funoa and

Talanoa. When the collision is made, they are going the extra yard to

bounce, he would look for a few of them in the game because defences

brilliant kick. Deservedly get possession. They do a lot of reverse

plays around the ruck, Horton fades one way, the half comes around the

created this one-on-one to the right-sided. He's made a big impact

Saints have brought themselves back into the game.

Pryce eventually rounds him up and put him down. It finds one more pass

and they are in the clear, Saints. Well spotted, Leon Pryce. Wilkin

sees a gap and runs towards it but it closes. Last play again. Walsh

puts it high. Shaul saddles and self, leaps and captures safely. No

pressure whatsoever on the full-backs. They'll be disappointed

with that. Good field position, plenty of time... And you want to be

competing for that ball on the last tackle. On Jonny Lomax watch, he is

playing at left centre. He swaps around the field. I think he's

defending there, as an attacker he'll feature in the pivots. They

are keeping him out of the firing line of these big Hull/ variance

Shaul... On his backside when he catches it but he'll be happy the

ball is safely caught. Keeping hold of the ball now more, St Helens.

Does well to keep the ball alive. Hull looking to create a bit of

havoc year with Sneyd. Quick snap up from dummy half. That

is good from Naughton. Curtis Naughton... Nearly lost that. Get it

away to Danny Houghton. Houghton throws the dummy. Holding off Tasi

Jamie Shaul I think is confident he can get over there. -- Jamie Shaw.

The referee wants absolute confirmation. A gain, great play by

Hull. Minichiello gets out of that tackle. Here is the finish. Great

play from half-back and that is a try. So that is a try? One look

required by the video referee and the try is confirmed. And Hull, just

before the break, put themselves back in that comfort zone. Yes, they

look very impressive on the attack, Hull. Very organised. It is a good

run but again, Houghton was there at the start of it. The support play

was good and this guy finished it. This is the final act of the drive.

Quick play of the ball, defenders all over the place. That is a very

good finish. But again, the half from Danny Houghton. Was that St

Helens defends that switched off there? Well, it is difficult,

because they have come 50 metres, they have kept the ball alive, you

know, they were scrambling back, quick play on the ball. It is a guy

at half-backs, and easy finish for him. You can't really blame the

defenders. 10th try of the season for Jamie Shaw.

Marks the looking to add to his tally again. Not being rude as he

turns his back on the ball. They hit back straightaway, didn't

they?. Hooks it over, four out of four. The roar of "Need" again. And

24-12 daily. -- "Sneyd". One ad market, that is where he spotted.

Because of the pace of the play -- one at marker. Doubly hard for James

Roby's point of view because that is the sort of thing he does on a

regular basis to other teams. You can just to see how influential the

Hull pack is because Houghton has played a bigger part in this game so

far than a Roby. Jordan Thompson, taken high, was he?

Referee is happy it was a fair tackle from Roby and Hull continue

to roll forward. Minichiello throws it left and suddenly there is an

opportunity for Talanoa to hit a bit of space. Good tackle. Walmsley came

across and I think he has hit his own man. Hull continue moving

towards this St Helens line with a sense of inevitability at the

moment. Saints are hanging on. Drop goal. Marc Sneyd is going to put the

one pointer over. The drop goal king for this season, one of those was a

winner against St Helens in the Super League and in the Challenge

Cup, he has just given his side a three Shkolina on the cusp of

half-time. Decision-making has been spot on -- a three score lead.

Horton and Marc Sneyd controlling things -- Houghton. Deservedly in

front. The Saints will have a real tough ask in the second half, they

have really got to pick their game up at the moment, they are finding

it really difficult. You get the feeling that they won't want the

restart. There was they who turn. They didn't want to restart, they

just wanted to run the clock that -- there was the hooter. Let's go down

to Damien Johnson, who is with Leon Pryce.

Are you good value of the lead at half-time? I think so but it is

really tough out there in these conditions, so whoever controls the

ball has a good chance of winning. Should you be further ahead? It is

just about right, I would say but I would like to be ahead. Jon Wilkin

is with us, much done to the -- to be done in the second half. We would

like the ball. It feels like Hull have had 90% of possession and we

have got to get back onto it quick. Well, that pretty much summed it up

from Jon Wilkin, Jamie? He has got it dead right. In this weather,

cheap possession are given away, cheap errors and the Saints are on

the back foot. They have played exceptionally well, Hull, they have

played the conditions. When you look at the stats, what springs out,

Ashton? The fact that Hull have only made a two errors in the whole of

the first half. Talk about completion and the kicking game,

Marc Sneyd's kicking has been sensational. When you can play at

89%, you will always be there or thereabouts and Hull SER right up

there. Anything else from that lot? St Helens are completing 80%, they

had done OK but Hull have been sensational, played the conditions

fantastically. I think the stats are reflecting what we all seeing. I

think the viewers should understand that would then having so much ball

and so much energy, Hull, are winning the ground in the middle, we

have seen tries, we have seen Houghton run at them and marching

down the field, Talanoa and Funoa, Saints had to get a bit of a

position. Houghton is doing a bit of a Roby on Roby. It started so

differently, you saw the opening try and you thought it could be Saint'

day. Yes, this first try by Perceval was just I want to score a try more

than you want to tackle me, a simple missed tackle. A great kick by Walsh

to get a repeat set, repeat sets are gold, but as you alluded to Ashton,

I thought double pump from Lomax. Then you have to make the tackle. If

you want to win the Challenge Cup, you have to make these tackles.

Percival wants to score more than they want to tackle him. They will

be a bit embarrassed because they should make that stop in a game of

this multitude. When you saw that, did you think break academic Hull

are not on this? You would think so, but it has been a theme, it has been

too easy to score tries. I am worried that every time Hull get to

the St Helens area, they will score. The next two came from penalties and

early on, they were killing the penalty count. Yes, they were

deserved and I said, repeat sets of golf. It is not like when you have

to do -- repeat sets are gold. It is too wide here, four on four, but

Greenwood needs to be tighter. Leon Pryce has seen the gap and great

play. Great rugby instincts from Houghton, backing up through the

middle. We spoke about Leon Pryce and if he gets one-on-one, he is

going to go through the middle. Another place of field position for

Hull and this again, it is determination. If you want to get

through to the next round, make those tackles. When a coach looks of

those reviews, there will be some fingers pointed. They were pointing

fingers at each other, Saints, did you see their heads dropping a

little bit? It really is difficult in this kind of weather without the

ball, you need to play with the ball and Hull have been exceptional.

Especially at the try line, there were four Saints players around him

and Taylor wanted it more. Mach speed has been fantastic. His

kicking game has really come to the fore -- Marc Sneyd. We are going to

see the 40/20. Splits the winger and the full-back, managed to get his

winger is the best chasing possibility. I think he gets them

some more field position. And on the back of that vigorous verse in

attack... This is the 40/20, he has nailed it, it is a 3010, never mind

40/20. And that has given them all feel position -- more field

position. It looks like they are walking, two Saints defenders trying

to stop the play and just walking for Gareth Ellis. Beautiful outside

line by Ellis, sucked him in and beat him on the outside shoulder.

The fingers as well, when you don't have the ball, you get fatigued and

you make poor decisions under pressure. Saints have been guilty of

that when they are defending their own try line. They did finally get a

little bit of possession, St Helens. How do you think the introduction of

McCarthy-Scarsbrook has changed things? I think he has been good, he

has picked things up really hard. Get his due reward, outside

Minichiello Jon Wilkin and a beautiful tip on. Sneyd had to stop

a locomotive. It is a mismatch, he carry some impact

McCarthy-Scarsbrook and Jon Wilkin is a smart player. I think that

meant something, he was happy about that try. When you are a substitute,

you have to come on and make a difference and all of the subs, he

has made the biggest difference for either side. And then there was

speed, Hull seems to be playing the game a little quicker. Yes, the

weight of possession allows them to play the ball more quickly. It is a

great kick but it is a great take and he is up and running, he has

great speed, greater awareness and great agility. So what has been the

key, the difference, as they move the ball up the pitch? It is simple,

you have people injecting themselves into the line, backing each other up

and they create an opportunity out of nothing. Look at the Saints

defence, it is hard in this weather and it is another guy on the fly and

Minichiello comes like a steam train, he smacks for people. Look at

the speed of the play of the ball. I am confident Jamie sure won't score

an easier try. -- Jamie Shaw. Some of the Saints players are still

looking the other way when he scores. We talked about Mark -- Leon

Pryce but how much does it help Marc Sneyd concentrate on the kicking? He

has been the best player out there in the first car. Kicking, taking on

the line, everything he has done has been tremendous. And having Leon on

the right-hand side gives Saints something to think about. We spoke

before the game about whoever kicks best will win the game and he is

winning the competition without doubt. Are you surprised? We have so

many kickers on the St Helens team and we haven't really seen them

apart from the opening try. You have to step up in big games and if you

want to win the Challenge Cup, players have to play exceptional and

Mark speed has been exceptional. So will Lee Radford just be telling

them, keep on doing what you are doing? Why not? I mean people like

Taylor, hard to stop, scoring a try from a break-out one-on-one and

Houghton is so smart, they just go boom like a cannon and they are on

the charge. Saints' biggest challenges controlling the rock and

getting feel position. I am sure we will see a different feel to it, we

have seen ice packs, but the energy levels will be no after that half.

If they go out and compete set for said, they will not win, they have

to go out and chance their arm and make Hull make a few tackles in the

set of six, off-load the ball and get the quick meant on the ball.

That is what they did in the first two sets, Kyle Amor and Walmsley

were passing with each other and they did score the try. They could

do some more of that. Let's take a bit of a breath because it has been

fast and frenetic, wonderful opportunity for you to be part of

the Challenge Cup final because we paired up with songs of praise to

worn off. You walk out and it is almost like the Colosseum, it is

almost red-hot, like walking into an oven. I don't know if you are on the

pitch when Abide With Me is sung, but you can hear it. What impact

wonderful choir. Well, there have been three other games going on

today and we shall bring you up-to-date with who will be in the

quarterfinal draw later on, which will be after this game, as the

teams prepare to come out for the second half here. We have had three

other results and they have all gone the way of the Super League teams.

Wakefield beating Toulouse, young Tom Johnston getting another four

tries in that one. Wigan ran in ten tries, beating Dewsbury 54-4 and it

was 18-18 in the build-up to this game between Halifax and Widnes but

Widnes have won it. It is 12-25 here, six tries so far. What will

the second half bring for us? Brian Noble has hotfooted it back to the

commentary box. We are getting our money's word from him today,

alongside Jonathan Davies and Dave Woods.

Just as an aside on those results today, that is not a bad result for

Toulouse, 40-22 and if you don't know, Toulouse are actually in

league one, three divisions down, the third tier of rugby league. Just

coming into the competition this year, they have big aspirations.

They beat a championship team in the last round. So that is not a bad

effort for them but inevitably going down against a Super League team in

the end. One French team in the hat, or the big bowl, Catalan.

Warrington, Castleford, Widnes, and either St Helens or Hull. They have

not won here since 1926. But at the start of the second half, you would

make Hull favourites, would you? make Hull favourites?

They did everything well, looked comfortable, well organised, good

kicking game. If they can do the same in the second half I agree with

Jamie. It's up to Saint Helens to make the game and chase it. At the

moment Hull looking comfortable. They are playing the ball to quickly

and unless Saints come to terms with that, Hull are in the box seat. We

talked about hookers before the match, look at St Helens. Hull 17.

Isn't it a reflection of how one top Hull have been. It says it all.

They've made the yard so easy. Look where they are taking the ball back

from, a yard from their own try line. Percival looking to clear

their lines. The fellas have been making Danny dummy half runs. Roby

has only made three. That is as soft penalty, a coach

killer. Lee Radford will be blowing up because that is a soft penalty.

They've done the job. He doesn't need to do that. All the hard work

is done. And then your winger flops. Second effort has given Saint Helens

a knock-on. It was from Saints. Might have been a second not, as

well. That year from the video referee. I have a try. Saints have

knocked into the Hull man, his chest, going forwards. Make sure

FC. Without lost, that's a knock-on. Where does it hit? It looks like it

hits the hand of the Hull man. Then I have another look at but one? It

comes out of the St Helens man's hands, the first knock-on by Saint

Helens. Play this one on. Keep going, keep going. That is a

knock-on from Hull, no try, but a first offence by St Helens. Scrum

down. Hull head and ball on the 40. Good call, T M O. No try. You might

have seen in the background a rather serious looking Damian Johnson. Who

we were interrupting. Let's try again, the messages from the

coaches. That's right, there was a camera in the way of my view, didn't

know what was going on. Keiron Cunningham said massive improvement

needed at ruck. No rhythm, we need to improve our kicking game. The

message from Lee Radford for Hull, the accent will be on defence in the

second half, look to control the inside, keep up the momentum and

play quick from dummy half. A lucky break I think. If they scored

their... No arguments with the decision. No. Hull aren't too

concerned because they have possession again here. They retained

this grip on the game. Thompson, who is getting through some work.

Talanoa finished it. Going back to what Jamie said at half-time, the

enthusiasm to get back... Talanoa has another chance here. Across to

make a very good tackle. Hull fans think he's got there, but a long way

away. Minichiello... They were all cheering. Bowden is put down. Danny

Houghton. Thompson was there but it is passed to Sneyd. Pryce with a

loose ball. Collected safely. No touch for the St Helens players. So

this will be the last play in this set. Sneyd sends it steeping. Lomax

underneath it. He's in the in-goal area when he catches that, so it's

back on the 20 metre mark where the attack will take place. They've

looked very comfortable in attack, they'll be disappointed the ball has

gone to ground there, missed opportunity. Credit to Saints,

they've scrambled really hard for the defensive set, it should give

them the lift they need. And carries like that. A great tackle, Jonny

Lomax. An Talanoa, lined him up, showed him the touchline, not going

to cut inside him. Click away. Luke Walsh with the runaway. Support on

score. Unpicking the seam of the Hull defence, finding a way to put

St Helens back in the contest. Brilliant, brilliant strike, you

need someone to come up and then make an impact on the game. Good

defence, good communication by Hull. It had to be a finish and that's the

brilliant try. Here's the tackle on Lomax. Great scramble defence.

They've got this try of the back of defending that set of six, getting

the 20 metre reach. Just had his feet planted. 20 metre restart, the

carry from Vea gets them an off-load. Walsh into the backfield,

free on two. Push hard on Dawson. -- three on two. A good off-load. He

had it all to do. Looks around, ball in two Handsworth rose the dummy.

Very good try. Saints needed that. That's on the back of their hard

efforts defensively. They were scrambling. They might have gone

four scores down, now they are back in the game with two. Could so

easily have been almost out of the competition in the last five minutes

with the defending, the moment they had in defence. Right back in the

contest thanks to this fella. Luke Walsh's try, if he can add the kick

here, he sweeps it well enough. Super strike from the touchline from

Luke Walsh. 18-25. Suddenly, the gap doesn't seem quite as daunting for

those St Helens fans. No, as Brian said, you are under the cosh and the

off-load is crucial. Creates the opportunity. Get away from Sneyd.

Unfortunately, doesn't get the yardage back. Brilliant finish. So,

six minutes of the second half played. Suddenly Saints back within

a couple of scores of taking the lead back from themselves. Hull

realising it isn't job done yet. He's made an impact, hasn't he? Big

impact. He was once upon a time a Hull player, McCarthy-Scarsbrook, he

was in the Hull Academy ten years ago, didn't cut the mustard, so went

back to London and came through the ranks before moving to and a micro

in 2011. -- before moving to St Helens in 2011. Walsh puts it high.

Shaul with the sun in his eyes and the hooves pounding towards him.

Takes a very safe catch. Little bit of role reversal from the first

half, Saints starting to get into the game and have an opportunity.

Looking really hungry to knock the Hull players around a little bit.

They've just got momentum on their side. Penalty. Good call. Didn't let

go quick enough. They've scored from two penalties in the first half,

Hull, gives them field position. I'll explain that, Brian Noble, in a

tackle like that if the referee decided the defensive when, they

have the rights to hang on longer. He says it was the attacker's win,

so the defender had to get off quicker. You were supposed to

explain it. I did it. I do apologise.

I think their line speed is a lot better in the second of, they

realise they can't give the space to the Hull players to carry. Now they

that? Whereas old faithful was the abdomen the first half, when the

Saints, itching in is the strain at the moment. Warrington Castleford,

Huddersfield, Catalan, Widnes, Huddersfield, Wakefield, in the hat

for the quarterfinal draw. Saint Helens and Hull battling to take the

That is Jordan Thompson. He lets some of the bigger guys come

in and help him out to make sure the run is stopped completely.

Washbrook's pass a way. Talanoa here's Ellis. Pushing. Urging his

side closer. Two tackles to go. They've got them one-on-one. Curtis

Naughton will score! He's making a habit of that against St Helens. Try

scoring debut against Saints in April last year. He's scored against

them again in April this year. And now he's done the same trick in the

Challenge Cup today. Good play. They know what they are doing. On the

short side. Comes around the back, lovely cut out pass. This is a

penalty. Fages doesn't roll away. Trips over, very clumsy. This is the

finish. Again, it's like the isolation of the winger. You attack

a beaten defender. He scored in two mind again, Fages. Do I go in, stay

out? All you have to do is ask the question. The only trickery in it,

Sneyd comes one to from one side of the ruck, creating the extra number,

bamboozling Saints. They should readjust better than they are doing.

They should. 29-18. Look at McCarthy-Scarsbrook. A bit of

passion there, isn't there? Look to the heavens as he turns away with

some passionate anger from his team-mates. This is his toughest

kicks so far. It's a big kick. My maths tells me it's a two score lead

at the moment but if he kicks this it becomes a three score lead.

Thumbs up from headmaster Mr Noble. You had trouble with your maths

yesterday, didn't you? You have to work on your geography, don't you?

We've both got challengers. Having turned up at the wrong ground on

Friday night. He's put it wide. He's put it wide. It remains a two score

lead at 29-18. It's a great game, fair play, I have to say.

It ain't over yet. There is a long way to go. Kieron Cunningham, with

Sean Long at his side. They were pretty decent as players, weren't

they. And Lee Radford as coach of Hull. If you were picking the team

from the Super League over the last 21 years, those three would be

there, they would be pretty close to making that line-up.

There is Lee Radford. 12 finals were Bradford, lost one as well. He was

involved in a final as a Hull player as well -- won two finals with

Bradford. Sneyd with the kick and chase and

off they go. Roby picks up, trying to take

advantage of the quick play of the ball.

The last tackle is the next. Micro:bit up goes the kick of Walsh.

Never let it bounce. McCarthy-Scarsbrook's off-load,

though, was a gamble that hasn't played off. -- paid off. Just get

under it, just catch it. I think fitness will be a telling factor in

this game. Forwards starting to walk, the backs have to help them

out and there is a long way to go. Grade carried by Ellis, carrying

three Saints players. Minichiello trying to spin away,

caught high. Penalty right in front of the sticks. They have to go the

goal here, don't they? Yes. It was high from Wilkin. Minichiello

not happy. Chance for everybody to get a bit of

fluids on board, it is one of those humid days. You can see the sunshine

but you can't feel the humidity if you are sat watching at home.

Quite a day so far, 11th kicks, four tackles. Not a top tackler for any

stretch of the imaginations. Points scored. Kerb -- nine points scored.

The noises coming from those Hull fans at the far end as they watch

Marc Sneyd add another two, that takes it now to a three score game.

They are enjoying their afternoon in the sunshine as they take another

step towards a quarterfinal place. Having said that, there are still 20

minutes left of play. Yes, that is what I was saying. St Helens have

worked their way back into this game at times before. They have to go

back to the well now and find some way of finding some inspiration.

They are winning the collision again, Hull. Once they collide, the

next yard again, they make that extra couple of yards, get on the

front foot. Two guys on the ground again. Tackle four finds them on the

halfway line. Sneyd going high and short this

time. And again, it is allowed to bounce, so anything could happen. I

don't think he wanted it to go high and short, I think he was trying to

spiral one up and give a challenge to Owens.

Second-half possession again, that for me is going to be a factor in

the closing minutes. Percival has got a touch of class

about him. Can't quite get his legs free Vea. A

bulldozing effort from the Interchange player. But they haven't

made a lot of yardage. That is spiralling one, a good kick from

Wilkin. But the bounce is kind to Hull and they are happy, in the

shape of Naughton, to have the ball again.

He is a handful, Talanoa. He is off again. A couple of lazy defenders

there. Too easy, that. To be generous, tiring defenders. There

are 20 minutes left! It is a hot day, though, as we keep saying and

they have had a lot of work to do. Should be an easy one and is, but

look at where the kick came down, beautifully judged. Saints have to

start right on their own line. Look at the difference in the speed

of the play of the ball. Slowing everything down, three in the

tackle, peel off, really slow, really controlling the tackle area.

They all thought it had been given to McCarthy-Scarsbrook, it hadn't,

so it is a knock-on. They need a couple of players to

really lift the tempo, the St Helens side. At the moment, they look flat,

they look tired, they looked lethargic and they look unbeaten

side. You know, you never write off... Now there is a bit of

backchat, that is not what you want. Percival has said something out of

turn. That is not great from Saints, at times like this, you want

somebody to metaphorically roll their sleeves up and give you a

lift, smash to the line, find a great carry, but they look a bit

short of ideas at the moment. This isn't going to help their cause,

another set defending, training your energy levels.

The ball away to how to gain. That is how close he is, you can see the

line. Another try here would surely win the game. Put down, but close.

Sneyd is a marked man. Walsh came out so he lets it go. Off-loads to

Leon Pryce. Dances away from Walsh, runs a full circle, where his ego?

Doing the hokey Cokie. Left leg in, right leg in. -- where is he going.

They need someone to snap in two Sneyd's place for the kick. It comes

back off our St Helens player. Sneyd gets a kick away under duress. Our

plan taken by Talanoa and off to Yeaman, and Hull have a try that

might just win then the game. It is a long way back the St Helens. They

have come a long way today and they are delighted. It was a great

manufactured kick from Sneyd. Gave his outside run absolutely every

chance. Talanoa leapt into the air, Yeaman, all he had to do was wait

for the trimmings, whatever is left over. Talanoa wasn't going to be

beaten. To onto, out jumped the Saints defender, got the ball away

and paid the price for the penalty from Mark Percival. Couldn't keep

his mouth shut there so the referee pings him, which he has every right

to do. They seemed to have closed it down, Saints. Sneyd just clicks the

ball up to the corner. Talanoa, great catch and a great off-load.

They are just making things happen. A bit of luck there, the ball comes

back but then he is upon his and realises, right. He could have taken

a tackle and gone down, but no, bang it in the air. He has been doing

this all season, lovely off-load, and it deserved it. The song is Old

Faithful, Yeaman is very much an old faithful in that Hull side, he has

helped to make that Challenge Cup run today, and major step towards

Wembley. They love him and he loves them.

And do they feel the game has gone here or can St Helens summon up the

energy, stiffen the sinews? It is a great word, energy, they just don't

seem to have any, they looked lethargic and that is on the back of

what Hull have done to them. They have been off the ground quickly and

when they haven't handled it, they have given away a penalty after

their own responses. That is why it has been a tough day. Inside the

posts, so 37-18, Hull have the lead. Well, 37 points, at home, it is not

very often it happens at St Helens. Short kick off, St Helens try to get

it back and it has gone too short, within the ten, penalty for Hull.

Shocking, there are 14 minutes to go, they are panicking. I understand

the short kick, but understand the rules. Let it bounce, it might still

go the other side of the line. The third time they have conceded more

than 37 points. The way this is going, it could be more, because

there is only one side in this at the moment.

A reminder that the draw is coming up, as soon as we finish here. The

Widnes, Castleford and it looks like Hull. Sand halos don't need to

concede any more. He is held up a yard away. Houghton into the in-goal

from? How well has Minichiello done, a lot of the talk being where is

He has had a very good game. A lot of players have been very impressive

today for Hull and he is one of them. But again, you have to

question Saints vote defence. They have enough numbers there, look.

Clean as a whistle, he puts it down. He has trebled his season's tally of

try scoring. He had only scored one before today, he now has three to

his name. Fund in the sun, isn't it? If your team is winning. -- fun.

"He's one of our own," is the chant. Taylor, Hull born and bred. He was a

Hull Kingston Rovers player for a while, but switched back to Hull.

Marc Sneyd looking to put another nail in here. Over it goes. 18

Fulston talent, 43 for Hull. When we sat down and contemplated what might

happen this afternoon, I don't think any of us had an idea that one side

would rattle up 43 points to the other's 18. Very, very impressive,

Hull. Still ten minutes left to play. Its

damage limitation now for St Helens, isn't it? A touch, the touch judge

says. It is Hull's ball. They will feel confident in the result now

Leon Pryce has been substituted, he has earned his corner and got a rest

with ten minutes to go. Back at his former club, Leon Pryce, had happy

days at Saint Helens, he is shared in so much of their glory. -- he has

shared. Minichiello pushing forward again.

Hull haven't finished yet. Another three Saints defenders in

the ruck, on the floor. It enables you to get your speedsters into the

game, it has been the key to their success. The wavy big blokes have

carried the ball in the middle. Ellis trying to skittle them out of

the way. It's going to be an attacking kick if it comes. If they

get that far they might fancy scoring a try never mind getting an

attacking kick. The touch judge on the far side has confirmed that. The

That is the end, if it wasn't earlier, for St Helens,

comprehensively batted today. A very good finish. Just watch. Peels off,

Cunningham will be disappointed with the defensive effort today. That's

an understatement. I don't think Lee Radford ever had that athleticism as

a player. The athleticism of these wing goes these days, we'll most

take it for granted, we see tries like that every week. -- of the

wingers these days. You didn't used to be able to do it. Now it's

brilliant to see those wingers flying through the air. Party time

for the black and whites. They've enjoyed their day out. It's a big

statement is, everybody watching, thinking, I don't fancy them for the

next round. It sets them up for the Super League, it's all very close,

in a good position in the league table. Sneyd from the touchline

start it left, hasn't got enough curl. 47-18! As I say, it's a

battering. Just watch. Just too easy.

It's now their biggest defeat of the season. The biggest number of points

they've conceded in a match this season, Saint Helens.

their way downfield again, Hull. Saint Helens will hate to see that

scoreline trickle past 50 points. It would be ignominious, wouldn't it?

Again, making good metres, Gareth Ellis, even in this late stage of

the game. Up and plays it. Halton. "We Want 50!" Is the chant from the

home fans. Great kick, brilliant chase. In danger of being caught in

goal. His speed took him away, distant return here. -- decent

return. Well, Jonathan, you have the duty of

picking the Ladbrokes man of the match, who have you gone for? I

think Scott Taylor has played well, Minichiello, Gareth Ellis. Danny

Houghton. But the standout player for me has been marks

Marc Sneyd. He has just guided this side around the field, his kicking

has been great, creativity, brilliant. St Helens looking for a

late bunch. Dominique Peyroux's off-load... Ushered towards the

touchline. Off-load picked up by Dawson. Peyroux. Last play of the

another angle on that? From behind or something? This will probably be

a good one. On this one, where is the front foot? There, touch. No

try, scrum down. On a difficult day, not even consolation for St Helens

right at the end. Instead it will be Hull who get the ball back, if

anybody has the appetite to start the game again. We're into the final

30 seconds. Both packs will be happy to stand around in the sunshine as

the clock counts down. The referee isn't going to stop the clock. He's

trying to urge them to get down. 15 seconds to go. He can't be in the

lives both of them, they've both given up! Eventually we get the ball

fed, little chip over the top, trying to finish with a flourish.

McCarthy-Scarsbrook is the man who gets the ball, but it is Hull beyond

any doubt who get the spoils. That has been a very, very big statement

by Lee Radford's Hull FC. Completes to

complete performance of an severe and defensively. This guy hiding

them around the field magnificently. -- on and off the field. It is a

very big statement by Hull. They are into the hat, the draw coming up

sure he'll be absolutely delighted with the way the game has gone. I'm

Unbelievable, I thought, massive effort from our forwards. In this

heat as well, they defended outstanding, everyone did. 1-17. I

think we deserved it and deserved it well. Not many teams come to

Langtree Park and put 47 points on Saint Helens. They think they were
